The past 12 months have seen the highest ever number of incursions by Spanish ships into Gibraltar’s waters, with the almost double the incidents from 2012. Spain has made a record number of illegal incursions into Gibraltar’s waters in the past year, new figures show – capping a 12 month period in which relations between The Rock and Madrid reached their lowest ebb since the rule of General Francisco Franco.

Britain was again battered by strong winds and 50ft waves today, as more than 100 residents were trapped in their village for a fourth consecutive day.

Vessels flying the Spanish flag intruded into Gibraltar’s sea limits 446 times last year, figures obtained by The Sunday Telegraph reveal – almost double the tally for 2012, and the worst year on record. General Franco blockaded Gibraltar, but he never presided over as many incursions into its waters. The repeated incidents have aggravated an already-fraught relationship, and the maritime game of cat-and-mouse heightened fears of a serious accident. Some in Gibraltar have called for the Navy to increase its armed patrols; others described the Spaniards as “trigger happy.” “Such incursions are a misguided attempt to maintain and assert Spanish claims that the waters are Spanish,” said a FCO spokesman. “However, we have always been confident of UK sovereignty over British Gibraltarian Territorial Waters. Although unlawful Spanish incursions are a violation of sovereignty, they are not an armed attack and are not a threat to UK sovereignty. They do not weaken or undermine the legal basis for British sovereignty. Nor do they change the fact of UK and Gibraltar jurisdiction.” In November – one of the worst months for incursions, with 54 incidents – the Spanish Ambassador to London, Federico Trillo, was summoned to the Foreign Office and “told in no uncertain terms” that the British government would not stand for such “unlawful incursions”. It was the third time since Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took power in December 2011 that the ambassador had been summoned. Under the previous administration of Socialist prime minister Jose Luis Zapatero – who was markedly more conciliatory towards The Rock – there were 23 incursions in 2011 and a total of 67 in 2010. “These actions and threats are wholly unacceptable,” said William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, earlier in the year. He said that the incursions were stepped up in response to Gibraltar’s creation of an artificial reef, which they maintain is necessary to encourage fish stocks. Spain says it impinges on their fishing rights. “These measures are disproportionate and obviously politically motivated, having been introduced immediately after the lawful creation by the government of Gibraltar of an artificial reef in Gibraltar’s waters,” he said. “They are also unlawful under EU law.” José Manuel García-Margallo, Spain’s foreign minister, said he was “surprised” at the summoning of the ambassador – adding that Spain “scrupulously complies with EU law.” But Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s chief minister, accused Spain at the time of “needling away at the UK and Gibraltar” by “taking such action.”

David Lidington, minister for Europe, has told MPs that the UK has made repeated diplomatic protests over incursions in recent months. Mr Lidington said Spain had increased unlawful incursions by its state vessels into UK territorial waters from about five per month to about 40 per month. “We stand ready to do whatever is required to protect Gibraltar’s sovereignty, economy and security,” Mr Lidington said. “We believe that it is in the interests of Spain, Gibraltar and Britain to avoid incidents such as this that damage the prospects for establishing dialogue and cooperation.” The worst month for incursions was August, when Spanish ships illegally entered Gibraltar’s waters 68 times. four year old boy falls

A four year old boy who fell from a bouncy castle is on a very serious condition. The accident occurred in a house in Carril Torre de los Martínez de Guadalupe. The child was admitted with a head injury to La Arrixaca, and remains hospitalised in the pediatric ICU. Another child under 6 years of age also fell from the castle, and suffered multiple injuries. This accident is one of the many caused by the storm that swept the region and gave rise to 139 emergency calls due to falling trees, debris and road obstructions. Strong gusts of wind, which in the Altiplano and Northwest reached 100 km per hour caused many mishaps. A couple watching television in their house in Purias, on the old road between Lorca andÁguilas, were uninjured when the wind brought down a eucalyptus tree, which fell against a power line, which brought down the supporting turret on to the roof of the house. For the last 5 years, a small group of Campoverde residents have made up the Cofradia de la Convocatoria (The Brotherhood of the Announcement), and each year, have had the honour of leading the Easter Processions on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, in Pilar De La Horadada, one of only 3 expat Confradias in Spain, to have the privilege of carrying such a Paso.

After some painstaking detection work, by the Guardia Civil, two Romanians have had their respective collars felt, by the men in green. Washing machines, televisions, audio systems, clothes, food, drinks, fold up cycles, a telescope, and Christmas presents, wrapped in greeting paper, were recovered from homes, occupied by these low life individuals. The M.O. used by these people, was to drive around urbanisations in a white van, plastered with utility company logos, so as to give some form of creditability for their reason to be cruising / parked, in local streets. As soon as home owners were seen to leave a house, the two would break in by any means, remove all they could into the back of the van, and away. This success by the Guardia, was reported, quite rightly, in the Christmas press, but “Barnes Bulletin / Sol Times” can exclusively reveal, that the bank card used by these Romanians, and subsequently recovered, was stolen from a neighbour of the Chair of Neighbourhood Watch in Campoverde, and bang opposite the home of a high ranking member of The Guardia Civil ! A lengthy term in a penitentiary awaits. Should any reader believe that any items recently stolen from you, might be among the recovered items, drop into the Guardia Station in Torre de la Horadada (see photograph) taking with you your official Denuncia, and proof of identity. Mind how you go.

PROBLEMS AT CORVERA INTENSIFY One would have thought that before the first bucketful of soil had been lifted from the ground to start construction for Corvera’s grandeur airport, that somebody might have looked skyward, on hearing the scream of trainer jets overhead, and ask if this was perhaps, not the best place to site a commercial airfield? Apparently, no! Now why am I not surprised? Pedro Blayro, an engineer employed by AENA, the state company that manage all airports in Spain, has stated that the sky’s above the new Corvera complex, are used by the Spanish air force to train pilots and students, with lots of free airspace being required throughout the day. San Javier airfield works hand in hand with the military, in the main, because commercial flights arrive and depart across the Mar Menor, so avoiding the restricted area. During 2013, San Javier handled more passengers than Valencia and Bilbao. With the majority of San Javier’s customers, having homes along the Orihuela Costa, it would be Elche - Alicante Airport that would see an increase in passengers, should San Javier be closed to commercial passenger traffic. A recent e-mail from Antonio, airfield supervisor at Catral International Airport, tells me that they are getting geared up for an increase in flights, with his wife, Maria, knitting a new high visibility wind sock. Good man! Interesting aeronautical times ahead in 2014.

CATALINA WHEEL THEFT Wandering over the Sierra Minera in 2010, a so far, unnamed hiker, stumbled across two felons, who, having removed the top pulley from the head frame above a mine shaft, in the process of cutting the nineteenth century wheel into three pieces. Managing to make contact with the local constabulary, the two men, one from La Union, the other from Torre Pacheco, were caught “Red-handed”, and taken to the Guardia Civil barracks, where they remained for 3 days, while preliminary identifications were undertaken. Quite why it has taken 4 years to come to court, is anyone’s guess, but on December 13th., it reached Assizes No.1 in Cartagena. The council for the prosecution, has asked for two years in prison for the accused, along with a fine of some 3.780 euro each. The defence counsel, Ce’sar Delicate, told the court that his clients were unemployed, and looking to provide funds for their families. They were under the impression that because the mines were abandoned, there would be no harm in cutting down the cast iron wheel, and selling it to the local scrap dealer. Senor Ce’sar stated that a term of imprisonment is disproportionate to the crime, with a fine to the value that the scrap dealer might have given in exchange for the iron, more appropriate. The court will announce it’s verdict before the end of 2013. It will be interesting to see what value “The courts” put on our local industrial heritage.

Granada in the New Year

The city of Granada was the last stronghold in Spain of the Muslim Moorish race who had controlled the Iberian Peninsula for all of 8oo years. During their time in Spain they made the city of Cordoba, the largest and, with a population one million people, the most populated city in the known world. They were an educated people who built some of the worlds earliest universities. Under them medical research in particular blossomed. Then disaster. The city of Cordoba fell to the reconquering Christians. This event forced the Moors to move their seat of power to Granada. Determined to maintain the high standards by which they lived, they chose a site on a red coloured hillside to build what was to become one of the most famous Muslim built collection of Palaces in the western world. This was to become known as “The Alhambra Palaces”. The word Alhambra meaning “the red hill”. More Beautiful and ornate palaces are hard to imagine. The palaces were surrounded by beautiful gardens and many fountains. The Nasrid dynasty were the masters of all that they surveyed during the time that they lived here in Granada. Even today the city enjoys the feel of it’s powerful Moorish Past. The market area in the centre of the city has the Moorish horse shoe shaped doors. The narrow cobbled streets that you would associate with the Kasbah lead into bright leafy squares with tinkling fountains. The people here are olive skinned with big soft brown eyes. They sing throaty melancholy songs which tell the story of their exotic past. In the caves fiery dancers in flamenco dresses stomp arrogantly, throwing their hands in the air, pained looks on their faces as they stamp, pout

Spain’s economy minister sees ‘significant’ job creation in 2014 Spain’s Economy Minister Luis de Guindos arrives at the Parliament to attend the weekly government control session in Madrid Spain’s Economy Minister said on Wednesday that job creation in 2014 would be “significant” as a tentative economic recovery kicks in, but a poll showed most Spaniards do not expect any clear improvement until 2015. “2014 will see the net creation of jobs, higher even than we predicted in September in the budget, and the jobless rate will fall,” Luis de Guindos told Cadena Ser national radio, declining to put a number on expected jobs created. Spain exited a recession in the third quarter of last year but the economy is still sickly and with unemployment officially predicted at 25.9 percent in 2014, roughly where it is now, there is little perception of a real recovery on the streets. Separately on Wednesday, a poll of 1,000 people published in newspaper El Mundo showed that 71 percent of Spaniards believe the recovery and the end of the crisis will start in 2015 at the earliest. The country is still reeling from a decade-long housing bubble which burst more than five years ago, forcing a 41-billion euro ($56 billion) bailout of the country’s banks, which were glutted with property debt. King Juan Carlos should abdicate King Juan Carlos should abdicate, say two thirds of Spaniards The popularity of Spain’s King Juan Carlos has slumped to a record low, with almost two thirds of Spaniards thinking he should abdicate King Juan Carlos of Spain has for the past 38 years been one of the world’s most popular monarchs. But Spaniards have overwhelmingly lost confidence in him over the past 12 months, with 62 per cent now saying that he should step down. By contrast, two years ago, in the first three months of 2012, almost 80 per cent of Spaniards had a positive opinion of the King. In the same survey this time last year, he remained popular, with under half thinking that the 76-year-old King should abdicate. But Spanish newspaper El Mundo, which commissioned the survey, described 2013 as “the third consecutive annus horribilis” of the King, “in which the gap between Spaniards and the monarchy has widened.” Spanish citizens have become increasingly frustrated by a long-running corruption investigation into the King’s daughter, Princess Cristina, and her husband Inaki Urdangarin – particularly at a time of economic crisis and widespread unemployment The corruption case of 2013 further damaged the King’s standing – which had already taken a battering the previous year when he was discovered to have embarked on a lavish hunting trip to Botswana at a time of grim austerity in Spain. He fell and broke his hip during the elephant-hunting safari, which caused the expense to come to light. The King has appeared in public on crutches in recent months and in November surgeons replaced his left hip – his ninth operation since May 2010. Ahead of his last operation, the palace firmly denied the King was considering abdicating. Younger Spaniards, who were not alive during the Franco years, were overwhelmingly in favour of abdication, the poll showed. King Juan Carlos was widely respected for helping guide Spain to democracy in the 1970s after the death of Franco. However King Juan Carlos’s son, Prince Felipe, 45, held on to a positive rating of 66 per cent – and most of those polled said the monarchy could recover its prestige if he took the throne.

You need to dress in layers with clothes designed specifically for winter sports - these will keep you dry and warm at the same time as transporting moisture (i.e. sweat) away from your body. You’ll also need good gloves or mitts, a warm hat and scarf, and maybe a helmet. Sunglasses and/or goggles are vital to prevent snow blindness on sunny days and to let you see where you’re skiing on snowy days - and they assist greatly with looking cool as well as ensuring ski safety. Don’t forget to smear on plenty of high factor sunblock and lip balm throughout the day - the sun is more powerful at high altitudes, and also reflects back off the snow, whilst the wind exacerbates this effect. Another effect of altitude is that you dehydrate rapidly, so keep drinking throughout the day (not alcohol though - this dehydrates you more). And keep yourself well fed, as you’ll be burning up lots of calories. If you get ski fit before you go you’ll have a much better and far less achy holiday, so do ski-specific exercises for up to six weeks before leaving, and consider visiting an artificial slope for lessons or practice. Ski insurance might sound boring but it’s vital - make sure your ski insurance also covers you for stuff such as theft/loss/damage of ski equipment, ski lift closure and lack of skiing due to poor snow cover, and the cost of being evacuated and repatriated in the event of an injury. It’s always worth considering ski lessons - everyone has room for improvement. When booking lessons try to get an English-speaking instructor. Your first day on the slopes will be hard work physically, so break yourself in slowly, spend time getting to know the resort’s runs and stop skiing when you feel tired.

Safety Tips

The Sierra Nevada, just above Granada, has the best snow and the longest season in the country, usually five months of snow, though this year it opened a week early. Technology guarantees that there will be snow all season. There are 16 artificial snow machines, and the resort has the best groomed snow in Europe. With 61km of ski slopes - 45 piste and 6 off-piste routes - there are also 2 cable cars, 12 chair lifts and 5 ski lifts. The ski resort is open from 9am to 5pm although you can ski at night at weekends and Bank Holidays - night skiing was introduced in 1994 with the installation of lighting along the 3 kilometre El Rio slope. Not having the right gear is not a valid excuse - everything you need can be hired on a daily basis. Also, not being able to ski is also no excuse as there is no shortage of schools for

everyone from beginners to experts. If you’re a bit embarrassed, because the area has such an active nightlife, the slopes tend to be less crowded between 9am and 11am and between 1pm and 3pm (no prizes for guessing why!) so head out then when’s there’s less of an audience! Snowboarders as also wellcatered for with specialised snowboarding shops and schools within the resort. An on-slope half pipe is being built and will be available depending on snow conditions. In addition to alpine skiing and snowboarding, Sierra Nevada offers cross-country skiing, artistic skiing (ballet, jumps, moguls), telemark skiing, trekking and adventure skiing. It’s also the place to be seen, even if you don’t ski. The resort has a reputation – it’s a cool place to be seen, but you have to have the most

trendy gear! Pradollano is Sierra Nevada’s village area. It has attractive alpinestyle buildings, and most importantly a four-storey underground parking complex with a capacity of 2,880 vehicles. The village offers a variety of services including quality hotels, the best of which boast jacuzzis, squash courts, workout areas, saunas and indoor swimming pools. There is ample opportunity for you to spend your money too with shops, night clubs, pubs, bars and discotheques, supermarkets, sports and fashion boutiques, gift shops, magazine and newspaper kiosks, ski rental, photo-developing services, hairdressers, car rental, taxi service and a pharmacy!! Oh and don’t worry there is a new medical centre, child day-care centre, and banks with ATMs. Most facilities are

located around the main Plaza, and there is a small tourist train that takes you round the resort. Take the lift from the main square and, at various stages before the peak, you will find bars and restaurants offering panoramic views and blazing sunshine reflecting off the slopes. The road to the resort is narrow and winding and as you get within a mile of the resort, the air gets rapidly colder. Take extreme care, especially when it is icy, though even the coaches get to the top without problems. Be prepared for traffic jams at the top, especially at peak times, and allow plenty of time to arrive - during

the season the road can have queues for several hours. Remember to prepare your own car for the journey and invest in some de-icer! The best place to park is the main underground park, which has easy access to the facilities, though it is expensive for the long-term. If you are early enough you can get free parking on the roadside before the main resort - but pull in your wing mirrors! Queues for the lifts can be very long at peak times, and the bars often get packed to capacity. During the winter season the whole place pulsates with life and

energy, but it is also a beautiful place to visit out of season, when there is no snow. You will find it a peaceful place with plenty of hill walking routes; the air is clean and fresh and there are a few cafes and bars open for refreshments. And as a plus you will find ample free parking! IMPORTANT Sunscreen! The strong sunshine reflects off the snow so put sunscreen on as normal, but also put it on the under surfaces of your forearms, and under your chin and ears. You will burn from the sun above, and also from the reflected sun from the snow!

Q. So how do you answer the criticism that this week you have done exactly the same as Bob Houliston by jumping into the arms of the PP? A. Bob was part of the CLR-Claro political group and he betrayed the coalition and acted separately from it, not honouring the agreement and not accepting the internal democracy to make joint decisions in the interest of all, so then he defected over to another political group to bring our group down, he was expelled. That’s law. Let us be clear Bob is a defector or turncoat if you prefer, he acted for selfish personal reasons, and he betrayed the group to achieve his own personal ambition. This week CLR as a political group has democratically reached an agreement to change the existing government due to the continuous neglect of Orihuela and the Coast by the bipartite of greens and socialists. They have failed to achieve and maintain a steady government and there are many cases of irregular practices with regard to public contracts awarded. There are also many wrong and politically orientated disbursement of public money, there have been many illegal decisions taken. The old government seem to be unable to carry out any projects and developments of interest for the residents. CLR party unanimously decided to enter a coalition with the PP after conversations with the PP representatives in Valencia which ensured that all conditions and requests made by CLR in relation to investments and cooperation were accepted and granted, so the agreement was signed and sealed by the Secretary General of the PP in Valencia, Serafin Castellano, ensuring that this will mean real improvements for our residents in Orihuela and Orihuela Costa. After that, the decision

was then executed by CLR-Claro political group as a whole in the Town Hall. This is the vital difference, on one side is Bob, an individual selfishly defecting from his group and concluding a deal which betrayed his own group to form a new government for private interests, on the other side, the whole CLR group democratically deciding to enter a pact with another party and reaching an agreement to ensure and grant the general interest with a compromised government. Q. Will Orihuela and Orihuela Costa be any better off in this new team of CLR and PP? A. We believe so. After 2½ years in the opposition the PP are now listening, they admit their mistakes and have lived with the consequences. We believe that now the PP are serious in supporting our joint projects and the promises we have made especially the people of Orihuela Costa. A very important role in this pact has been carried out by the Secretary General of the PP in Valencia, who was vital to the conclusion of this agreement with CLR. He personally signed and sealed the agreement with the highest representatives of the PP in Alicante. They have already agreed to release the funds necessary to finish the construction on the secondary school and to build a new and long awaited primary school in Orihuela Costa. Schools are important, the greens and socialist never cared about certain issues because they were not important to them so they never worked to get them. We care about people and we do not mind negotiating with other parties like the PP for as long as necessary until we obtain what we consider fair for Orihuela Costa and the future of our residents. The PP has also agreed that we hold all the key positions in government to achieve as much as possible in the next 18 months in regards to projects and improvements for the Coast and Orihuela. In the last 11 months out of government, CLR have not been able to accomplish our promises even though we supported the minority government, they neglected Orihuela and the Coast. This can all change now. Q. After their deal with the Lorente and the local PP how can you explain the challenge that Bob Houliston and Asun Mayoral have launched to twart your recent agreement with the top representatives of the PP? A. I will be completely honest. It cannot be politically or logically explained, their attitude may only be explained by a psychiatrist. They have stubbornly insisted that the green and socialist government should be removed from power with no other reasons to justify this change than the fact that they were in minority, but they had no agreement whatsoever from the PP to invest in improvements for Orihuela Costa. Instead we have now obtained the compromise from the Regional Valencian Government (PP) that with our pact there will be investments in Orihuela and Orihuela Costa. So I cannot understand now that they do not support this Motion of Censure when this is basically what both of them have been demanding for nearly 2 years. Maybe it’s only because they will not have any powers in the new government. The question is, are they genuinely looking after the general interest of the citizens or are they just looking after their own private interests and personal ambitions?

Flu is a highly infectious illness that spreads rapidly through the coughs and sneezes of people who are carrying the virus. The property landscape in 2014 From the effects of the potential mansion tax in London to the various incentives for investors overseas

Villa Lola, Sa Caleta six bedroom villa, £5.6m Aylesford Thoughts of the coming year in the central London property market inspire a curious cocktail of optimism and fear for agents. The market is “on fire”, as Howard Elston, director of Aylesford International, puts it. Foreign buyers will continue to dominate the picture and new areas are becoming magnets for international wealth – Battersea’s vast Nine Elms regeneration area, for example, Marylebone, whose new boutique developments are breaking previous price ceilings and Mayfair, no longer Belgravia’s poor cousin. But prime London’s market sizzles beneath an ominous shadow: the threatened Mansion Tax. Until the May 2015 election, no one can know exactly what the tax – Labour’s proposed one per cent annual levy on homes worth £2m or more – will mean for property values. But Trevor Abrahmsohn, director of Glentree Estates, who sells some of London’s most expensive mansions in Hampstead’s The Bishop’s Avenue, sees it in dramatic by terms. “It will Zoe Dare drive a coach and horses

through the finely balanced dynamics of the residential property market, the like of which has not been seen since the Second World War.” “Many owners of high value homes aren’t prepared to wait and take the risk, so they’re downsizing in anticipation. That’s a trend that’s likely to continue next year, with more renters likely to target the top end of the London property market as a result, says Camilla Dell, partner at Black Brick buying agency. “But non-doms will continue to flood in, despite a new capital gains tax on profits from April 2015,” she adds of the new announcement that overseas investors in UK property will have to pay tax on any profits. Among those non-doms, Chinese buyers will come to the fore in London next year, says Rachel Thompson, a partner in The Buying Solution, branching out from the

Mansion on Hampstead’s Bishop’s Avenue new-build riverfront developments that have typically attracted them to more traditional period properties, while Middle Eastern buyers will increasingly diversify to the commercial sector.

For those with aspirations of digging deep in Kensington & Chelsea or Westminster, 2014 will be the year to do it before their local councils – who are already clamping down on megabasement conversions – put a stop to the practice entirely. As for areas on the up, the South Bank is “the most exciting contemporary urban quarter” and firmly on the prime central London map now, according to Savills, who predict 25 per cent growth over the next five years. New projects include South Bank Tower, an overhaul of the 1970s King’s Reach Tower, where 173 flats will launch in Spring from £650,000 through Savills and CBRE. The South Bank’s competition will come from The Strand, soon to be rebranded “North Bank” and to become a “world class destination”, according to Ben Babington from Jackson-Stops & Staff, who are marketing the new 353 The Strand development, with apartments costing from £2.35m. Neighbouring Covent Garden and the “city fringe” are also part of the WC2 overhaul and will see buyers migrate from the likes of Mayfair. Overseas, residency will be the buzzword in 2014. Following in Portugal’s footsteps, Spain recently launched its “golden visa” scheme, offering residency to non-EU nationals in return for at least €500,000 in Spanish property. Malta has introduced a new Global Residence Programme for non-EU nationals and similar incentives are taking off in the Caribbean, where

the success of St Kitts’ citizenship programme has driven Antigua and Grenada to launch similar schemes. Barbados is also making it easier for buyers to invest by relaxing the amount of time they can stay without needing to renew their visas. Spain will be hoping for some light at the end of the tunnel, now that it’s officially out of recession. Bill Gates has shown a vote of confidence by investing in the Spanish construction industry FCC and Ibiza’s property market is set to continue to fly next year, with British buyers back in force. “But don’t expect any bargains,” says Alex Vaughan from Lucas Fox. “For that, head to Barcelona, the Costa Brava or Marbella, whose markets have seen big price drops but are now recovering.” Italy – whose luxury property market saw prices fall by up to 20 per cent this year, according to Linda Travella from Casa Travella estate agency – is hoping to tempt investors by reducing buying costs from January (you’ll save around €12,000 on a €1m home) and Tuscany will be the place for Italian bargains, says Paul Belcher from Ultissimo. “The large supply of luxury properties, some at distressed prices, will put the brakes on price rises for at least another year,” he says. So, mixed fortunes await in London and incentives galore are on offer in weaker markets abroad. I am resident in the U.K. In Spain I own a villa in San Juan de los Terreros (Andalucía) worth aprox. 250,000 euro and a small bank account. In the u.k. I have assets worth aprox. 700,000 (seven hundred thousand) euro. I have two daughters. One lives in Mojacar (Andalucia ) with her daughter and the other lives in London and has no children. When I purchased the property in Spain I made a simple Spanish will leaving my Spanish estate to my two daughters in equal shares. What inheritance tax will my daughters have to pay in Spain? A. Residents in Andalucia who are in Group I (spouse and direct descendents) do not pay inheritance tax as longs as they receive less than 175000 (one hundred and seventy five thousand) euro each. Non-residents in group I pay on everything but the first 16,000 (sixteen thousand) euro received. If you leave things as they are, your daughter that lives in London will have to pay considerable inheritance tax in Spain and this is unnecessary. With this in mind, I recommend you change your will and leave the Spanish assets to your daughter and granddaughter that are resident in Spain and compensate your other daughter with extra assets in the u.k. As they will each be inheriting less than 175000 (one hundred and seventy five thousand) euro no inheritance tax will be due. I also recommend that If your granddaughter in Spain is a minor, you name your daughter in Spain executor with faculty to sell in case she needs to dispose of the inherited property before her daughter (your granddaughter) becomes of age. The content of a will can make a very big difference to the expenses and complexity of probate for your heirs. After looking into the options you may find that a simple mirrored will is the best thing for you, but this is not always the case. WE have a lot of experience in dealing with complex and/or expensive inheritance situations due to the non-existence of a Spanish will or wrongly written ones. Good advice when making a will is inexpensive and can save a lot of expenses and hassle.

APSA, the animal charity in Albox is delighted to announce it´s new plans for 2014 - an exciting year for the charity as we will be moving home! The charity is unable to meet the rising costs at the kennels so have negotiated a piece of land - more convenient too as it is closer to Albox. Once we have built there, the running costs will be far less and we hope to home more dogs as the new kennels will be more easily accessible to potential owners. The new kennels will be better for dog walkers, open days.........the future looks promising! At first, of course, we have to build! PALS Annual Sponsored swim

The year started with a splash for 20 intrepid swimmers, cheered on by over 400 supporters at The Bahia Beach in Puerto de Mazarron so with hangovers and bleary eyes the participants chased into the sea i=under blue skys and included a chicken, a belly dancer, and some cheeky 20s bathers. This annual event is always well attended but this year even more so and as usual the words ‘I will do it next year’ seemed to echo around the beach. The pledges seem to indicate that over 2600 Euros will be added to PALS fund. PALS (Protection and Life Saving) have over their 14 years now donated over 250,000 Euros worth of life saving equipment to local lifesaving organisations and remain in contact with those who need support beyond their normal budgetary limits.

“Saturday 7th December saw over 90 members and friends of D Sector Community Group attend their Christmas Dance. The venue was again the Amapola Restaurant in Bolnuevo where the management and staff put on a wonderful 4 course meal with wine and coffee. Suzy G provided the entertainment with her singing and energetic dance routines and she soon got the party atmosphere going with the dance floor crowed with revelers. A big thank you goes to Suzy for stepping in at very short notice when our original entertainer had to cancel for health reasons. The Amapola staff were very attentive throughout the evening and everyone had a great time. The event was an excellent start to the Festive Season.

The swimmers included a lady in her 85th year whose presence each year spurs on the faint hearted and Team Decklid have already indicated that their contribution is in excess of 1200 Euros. PALS would like to thank everybody for their support and hope to see you on the beach next New Years Day.

Salt-crusted Mini Baked Potatoes with Cold Chive Hollandaise

Starter

INGREDIENTS - Serves 5 10 small red potatoes olive oil ½ tbsp salt flakes 3 egg yolks 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoons white wine vinegar 6oz butter seasoning (1oz) chives, snipped You will need a large solid baking sheet.

METHOD

First of all, make the hollandaise by placing the egg yolks in a small bowl and season them. Then place them in a food processor or blender and blend them thoroughly for about 1 minute. After that, heat the lemon juice and vinegar in a small saucepan until the mixture starts to bubble and simmer. Switch the processor or blender on again and pour the hot liquid on to the egg yolks in a slow, steady stream. After that, switch the processor or blender off Now, using the same saucepan, melt the butter over a gentle heat, being very careful not to let it brown. When the butter is foaming, switch the processor or blender on once more and pour in the butter in a thin, slow, steady trickle; the slower you add it the better. (If it helps you to use a jug rather than pouring it from the saucepan, warm a jug with boiling water, discard the boiling water and pour the butter mixture into that first.) When all the butter has been incorporated, wipe around the

sides of the processor bowl or blender with a spatula to incorporate all the sauce, then give the sauce one more quick burst and you should end up with a lovely smooth, thick, buttery sauce. Then pour it into a bowl and stir in two-thirds of the snipped chives. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and leave in the fridge until the sauce is cold and set. Next, scrub the potatoes thoroughly and dry them with a tea towel, then leave them aside for the skins to dry completely (if you get ready-scrubbed potatoes, just wipe them with damp kitchen paper). Preheat the oven to 190°C/gas mark 5. When the skins are nice and dry, prick them with a fork, then moisten your hands with oil and rub the potatoes to oil them all over. Put the tablespoon of salt flakes in a bowl and swirl each potato in the salt to coat it lightly. Place the potatoes on a baking sheet and bake for 1 hour, or until crisp and tender. Then when you’re ready to serve, cut a cross in the top of each potato and gently squeeze up from the base to open out the cut slightly (use a towel to protect your hands). Quickly top each one with a spoonful of the chive hollandaise, then sprinkle with the reserved chives.

Monday 7th July It is said that Christmas is one of the most stressful times of the year, and I understand why that is so – but I enjoy Christmas. In a perverse sort of a way I enjoy all the rushing around buying cards and presents, not to mention the hours spent poring over the Christmas card list – is that their most recent address, or have they moved? What are the names of their children/ grandchildren/ pets? Is Dillon their grandchild or their dog? It is the only time in the year when the many strings of our lives get drawn together on the same day, and that is my favourite aspect of Christmas – we are all celebrating simultaneously. No matter what the primary accent of our Christmas may be, whether it be religious or purely Disney, we are all part of an international event, with feel-good and be-nice spread as thick as clotted cream on a Devonshire scone. For some reason Easter is unable to generate the universal bonhomie that marks Christmas. I feel that has a lot to do with it being a movable date – if it were,

for instance, always on 15th April, then we would know where we were, instead of having to consult the calendar only to discover that Easter, like an inconsiderate dinner guest, is ‘early’ or ‘late’ this year. The New Year has the advantage of being always on 1st January, yet still somehow fails to achieve the stature of Christmas – probably because it lacks an endearing central figure – there is no Santa New Year, nor a holy message of hope embodied in human form. Not even the blesséd Bank Holiday is observed simultaneously throughout the entire British Isles; England and Wales have 8, Scotland has 9, but Northern Ireland has the right idea with 10, according to my pocket diary. I was pondering on the problem, thinking how our celebratory talents and marketing opportunities were being squandered when the solution came to me – Birthdays! We all have birthdays, so why not celebrate them all on the same day? Why don’t we have an international Birth Day? It fills all the requirements – one date with an endearing central character – ourselves! How simple that would make things! Just one date to remember, one party to plan; what a boon for those with large families! I’m suggesting a date in early July; Nice weather, and far enough from Christmas. What about 7th July? The Man with the Silly Hat had the Last Laugh what’s a chap to do when confronted with gorgeous young things wanting to dab you with samples of patchouli and musk. In fact the whole store is manned by young attractive persons apparently recruited from a modelling agency. So now they have got me inside and I discover that the restaurant is situated on the top floor. This is not bad planning but is in fact a very cunning ploy indeed, because in order to get your lunch you now have to pass through the many delights on floors one to four all patrolled by the members of Girls Aloud and the Stepford wives. Floor one. My wife and I separate and arrange to meet in the restaurant 45 minutes later. I am surrounded by the finest designer clothes that money can buy and so to avoid temptation I rush to the escalator, carefully averting my eyes and humming loudly as I ascend to floor two, only to find more men’s clothing. This time the gear is more realistically priced with a plethora of special offers. I am so relieved to have escaped the designer floor unscathed, that I immediately buy five shirts and two winter sweaters because at these prices you simply cannot go wrong. A last gasp effort to reverse my decision before parting with my cash is that I really don’t want to have to lug heavy bags around with me. But they have that covered too, because the ravishing assistant assures me that everything will be sent down to the service desk for collection when I leave. some food inside me. Upwards then to floor three. No problem here, because it’s kids clothing and toys and those days are long gone thank God, so on to floor four where I am immediately surrounded by a breathtaking collection of kitchenware gadgets. I can ignore this I tell myself, just so long as I avoid eye contact with the coffee machines and those really useful . . . but no, I steel myself and focus on the escalator. To get to it however I have to pass through the electronics section and be fair, what bloke can walk past 3D televisions with screens the size of Norfolk and home cinema systems? Well not me that’s for sure. And look, there’s that super duper iPod with docking system that I have been promising myself. I swallow hard because it’s four hundred euros and hey, I only came in for a chicken carbonara but ding, I suddenly remember there is a way out. I have nowhere near enough cash left, and the only credit card that I have in my wallet is American Express - the one bearing the picture of a chap wearing a silly hat. Now let me tell you about the Platinum American Express card. It has been my companion for the last nine years, sulking and thoroughly brassed off. Why? Well it’s great to be able to flash this card and ask shopkeepers in a faintly American accented voice, “Do you take Amex?”, but the fact is nobody does. According to Alquerian legend, 2014 is the tenth year of the eighth cycle of the ancient calendar of Mustapher-Fag. To be precise it is the year of the Horned Saliva Beetle. This has come to symbolise the stupidity of all those who believe such puerile superstitious claptrap. Even Loco Paco isn’t fully convinced. But the New Year did bring the possibility of the dawn of a new age. An age of understanding, tolerance and peace in the Republic of Alqueria. Of course this is only a possibility. With the New Year’s Bacchanalian delights over, the people of Alqueria turn a collective and bleary eye towards the future. How the dysfunctional village survived long enough to welcome in 2014 is not only remarkable but an aberration on the normal course of human experience. While most people wish for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead the people of Alqueria have different priorities. Getting to the big pointy rocks first during the many inter-barrio riots is high on their list as is the hope of procuring Manuela’s favours. The Hill People who reside in the western barrio rely on their Remitroot crop for income. This wonderful plant has a multitude of uses, not least are the potent wines and spirits which are produced from it. The Hill People are the original inhabitants of Alqueria who occupied the Village before its relocation in AD932. The eastern barrio is populated by the affluent Newcomers who arrived after this time. The only other industry in the Pueblo is the olive mill of the

Newcomers, dilapidated and rundown it is owned and mismanaged by the obnoxious Rodriquez. What occurred during the fateful year of AD932 is not on record. Compelling archaeological evidence suggests that the village underwent a complete but precise dissection and a later reconstruction in the valley below the Sierra Alhamilla. Local legend suggests that the Caliph Abd-ar-Rahman III ordered the village moved after one of the inhabitants upset the venerable gentleman. A sheep’s bladder, an amphora of olive oil and one of the Caliph’s wives formed the basis of the tale. Barrio rivalry and undeclared war have raged ever since as both factions try to gain the upper hand. Every available weapon is used from sarcasm to explosive devices. Rioting has long been known as the ‘Alquerian Pastime’. The cobblestones in the streets have two numbers carved on them. One is for its position in the road and the other for its position in the barricade. With the coming of a new year a real hope for peace does exist. The chance to forgive and forget only has to be grasped by willing hands. A strange tide of optimism runs through Alqueria, it is the sea of hope and it is on the flood. That night the Bar La Golondrina Verde was fire-bombed.

I am pleasantly surprised at the very reasonable bill, and feeling suitably refreshed we wander out of the restaurant and into the final trap. “Oh look”, says my wife as she sees a beautiful piece of lead crystal. “That’s just what we need.” I groan and there is the sound of muffled cheering from the man with the silly hat in my wallet.

Doesn’t the mind work in strange ways? When we get to a particular stage of our lives we’re delighted just to have a mind that works every so often, but it’s a source of wonder at times what it can do under its own steam. I was looking though some photo albums from when Helen and I went to California in 2000 BC-Before Child- and they reminded me that I used to believe chewing gum was made from spiders. I couldn’t work out why I was in chewing gum mode, but I went with it anyway. Then another long forgotten fact popped into my memory; chewing gum was first used over 5000 years ago in the Neolithic Era. That’s even before The Archers were heard of! As if by magic, almost immediately I came across a report that said someone had found a piece of gum which scientists’ tests had proved was from that same Neolithic Era. It must be yucky to be a scientist sometimes, the idea of spending my day poking about in a piece of gum that had been heartily chewed by someone you didn’t know, getting all manner of stuff on your skin isn’t my idea of fun. But then scientists are an odd lot-remember Uncle Quentin in Enid Blyton’s Famous Five books? He’s been my model for all scientists since-intelligent but away with the fairies. Since then I’ve always kept them at arm’s length, you never know what they may want to prod or probe. I’ve got nothing against scientists, but they do strange things; some of them have been doing that probing and prodding thing on Red Squirrels for the last four years. Why? They’re investigating whether they-squirrels not scientists-could carry the pox virus. My immediate thought wasn’t, wow, that’s fantastic news for us, or at least for squirrels, no, the first thing that popped into my head was, after all that intimate squirrel contact out in squirrel land, how do they wash their hands for lunch? I received an interesting email from a gentleman who, for a living, sells IPTV (Internet Protocol TeleVision) android based boxes. He wanted to ‘update me’ on several facts. In the introduction to the article on 23rd October I did say that this article was ‘fraught with controversy’ for the very reason that everyone has a different perspective. The article was supposed to be a fair appraisal of the devices out there, with a few warnings! This gentleman’s email seemed centred around the fact that in England everyone pays for everything! TV licences, Sky subscription and the list goes on.... We don’t live in England and don’t have to have that archaic attitude pushed on us. We are allowed to watch what we like without additional costs as these costs are picked up by the advertising that is on every 10-15 minutes. He further highlights the additional costs of EPG (Electronic Program Guides – can also be got free over the internet); Catchup TV (invest in a video recording device); the costs of setting up Server (just a computer with many huge hard drive storage devices) and the fact that the BBC (Bribes, Buyoff’s and Corruption) don’t want anything being ‘allowed’ out of England! In previous articles, I have highlighted the different required speeds for standard TV and HDTV but as a reminder, you need about 2Mb download speed of ‘Standard’ TV and double that for HD and as most of us have 2 or more Mb’s download there shouldn’t be a problem with it. The final part of the email was a justification as to the prices that are charged for these devices. I think it only fair to cut and paste this

It’s that time again

Christmas is upon us; that time when most people in the western world celebrate the birth of the saviour Jesus Christ 2013 years ago by not going anywhere near a church and instead go and worship the shopping centre and other deities like Amazon and pay tribute with their flexible friends. Britain’s church attendance numbers have been in dramatic decline until recently when numbers have bottomed out and even risen in some places. Statistics are up there with lies of course. Since 1980 the number of church goers in the UK has almost halved and the average age of attendees gone from under 40 to well over 50. Mens attendance has dropped further. With Sunday opening for shops and Super Sunday on Sky TV for football worshippers, God has dropped further down the list of priorities. In the 2001 UK Census 60% of Britons stated they were Christian, other religions made up 7.5% and the rest either said they were not religious or didn’t state a preference. In Britain about 10% of Christians attend church regularly, equating to over a million people a week in Anglican churches. At Christmas attendances swell and in 2011 over two and half million people attended a service which was almost 15% more than

the year before. Norwich apparently is the least Godly place in Britain having the lowest amount of church goers though recently numbers rose there by 10%. There are 44 Church of England Dioceses in the UK and 20 of these have seen improved numbers. In 2011 Anglican churches saw 1000 weddings, 2600 baptisms and 3000 funerals held every week across the country. The Catholic Church in Britain has seen a marked decline in its fortunes since its heyday in the late 1960s. There were nearly 50,000 church marriages in1968 but nowadays less than 10,000 couples a year marry this way. The Swinging Sixties brought us the pill and Free Love; homosexuality was also decriminalised. Attendances have fallen as the Vatican has stood fast against contraception, divorce, abortion and homosexuality and said they are not compatible with the teachings of the church. Scandals too involving church orders can’t have helped. Still, out of a population of about 4 million Catholics in Britain; 900,000 visit church regularly 233 new Catholic priests were ordained in 1965 compared to just 16 in 2011; with 30 men deciding instead to join a monastery, now there is a looming

crisis of a shortage of future Catholic priests. Oddly a new priest has to take a vow of chastity yet should an Anglican married Priest convert to Catholicism that’s okay and it’s been that way since the 1950s. In fact in 2008 when 500 Anglican Priests and Bishops jumped ship in protest of the Church of England allowing women priests many were married. Just four years ago Pope Benedict announced that a married man who converts to the Catholic Church can apply to train as a priest. Malta and Poland have the highest church attendance rates in Europe with almost 3/4s of the population going regularly. In Ireland almost half the population go yet in Italy which is sort of where the Pope lives only 3 out of 10 people regularly go to church. Here in Spain with its many religious festivals it’s only 1 in 5. A study showed that church going reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s, another that people with a right wing view of politics are more likely to visit church as are people with university degrees. Yueltide Trophy – Villamartin - 10th December “It´s never taken you six hours to play a round of golf ?” my wife used to say to me back in West Yorkshire, and she was right, although the distinctive aroma of Tetleys bitter on my breath was probably a bit of a give away. But here in Spain, six hours around Villamartin, no problem. We all have our own opinions as to what causes this tortoise mentality but in the interest of avoiding non p.c. chauvinistic comment and maintaining good Anglo Scandinavian relationships I´ll close this sentence now. Were we dispondent? Certainly not. Playing golf in Spain, in December, in the sun with pre event mince

pies and drinks served by our own Bobby G. what more could this band of golfing warriors want? (probably quite a lot but that´s all they´re getting) The podium places were ocupied by a trio of Tykes, all with scores far too low for publication but namely Brian Layden; Bryan Hirst and Geoff Hollingworth. Best guest was Dave Wright who intends to keep his prize bottle corked until Wolves are promoted! Ship Hispaniola Golf Society Ship Hispaniola Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Lo Romero on 9th December 2013. For this month’s meeting a group of 19 players visited the established course at Lo Romero on the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. This event was our Turkey Trot and the course was excellent with some good golf played on the day. Allan Demery won the days competition with 36 points (all Christmas food prizes), beating Karen Matthews into second place on 34 points. Nearest the pins were won by Tony Robson, Nigel Arnold and Karen Matthews. The hidden pairs competition was won by Allan Demery and Darren Holden on 63 points from Joe Goble and Mikey Kjellman with 62 points. On the day everyone won a prize, here are some of the selected highlights (in no particular order!!!) The most improved member was Grant Goble with a 4.6 shot reduction to his

Today 12 December, 64 players took part in our December Monthly Stableford at our home course of La Marquesa Golf Course. The weather conditions for December were very favourable, although somewhat chilly to start. Everyone had great expectations for Phyllis today, following her successes of last week, and in the prizes yesterday with another society. However, unfortunately the wheels fell off today with a mediocre score achieved (numbers cannot be divulged due to a confidentiality clause). It was also a day for electrical problems, Jim Weston’s buggy broke down on the 2nd hole (turned out it was only a lose connection). Harry’s buggy would not start and he ended up walking. He owes his playing partners a

double G and T as it took him 3 shots to reach the ladies tee on the 6th. Apart from that I believe a good day was had by all especially our winner of December’s Stableford , Paul Manning who returned a very good 39 points. . La Finca 11th December 2013. 28 members and guests arrived at La Finca with one eye on the weather and it did look as if the wet stuff was going to fall down but, in the end, it was pleasing that the rain stayed away but also did the sunshine. The course itself, is in splendid condition for this time of the year and the greens were on the slow side but, once again, in general good nick. Only 3 of the 4 NTP’s available with a sleeve of balls going to Steve Higgins, Pearl Sabine and Hermes

Woerdermann. Pearl took another sleeve for her “two” on the 13th. Once again, the Silver crew found points a little difficult to come by and it only needed 29 points for Alex Goslan to take 4th spot, with Robbie Rea and Pearl Sabine’s 31 points good enough for 3rd and 2nd. The winner of the Silver Division was new member Jack Daroszeski with 32 points.The Gold Division fared a little better and there were three very good scores. Steve Higgins’s 33 points was only good enough for the 4th spot well behind Steve McGuinness on 37 for 3rd, Norbert Spaniol

Bull Flanagan Golf Society December Report

For their December meeting on the 20th Bull Flanagan visited the popular local course at Vistabella. Unsure if the event dubbed ‘Santa’s Special’ would go ahead due to the heavy rain the previous day, members were re-assured by Pablo Riestra that the course was playable due to excellent drainage facilities at the course. Considering all the rain and true to the promise from Pablo the course was in good condition but buggy use was restricted to the buggy paths, which is the norm for most courses when heavy rain occurs, however the wet conditions did mean players had to work much harder as little or no run was available. Good support from members meant that 23 player*s led by ‘Santa Fantom’ headed to the day’s destination, even though there was a serious threat of more rain, however the members hopes for a good day’s golf was rewarded as the rain kept away and was replaced by quite strong wind. There was a change to the normal stableford format and for this event a pairs better

ball format was adopted with a draw being made previously by Mick McGrath and Dave Smith comprising one low handicap plus one high handicap. Despite a bit of confusion prior to starting the event it was pleasing to see returning scores were very good with most of the teams exceeding scores of thirty but only one team managed to beat the course par and another team managed to match the par. Winners of the event with a great score of 44 points were Preston Ives and Keith Smith and another highlight of this pairing was Keith Smith getting a birdie on the 18th hole for 5 points helped with the extra shots applied to his handicap. In second place with a level par round of 37 points was the pairing of Steve Edwards and Bill Fantom and they were followed onto the podium by the Captain/Vice Captain pairing of Colin Edwards and Ton Gijzen with a score of 33 points . Nearest the pin winner on the par three hole 8 was Preston Ives and the other two par threes at the course managed to beat all players and the prizes were transferred back to stock. A draw for the 28ers

group saw the name of Mick McGrath taking this special prize. Again Alan Gifford won the football card with the team of Wimbledon.

The group returned to the Bull Flanagan where Chris Stott and his staff provided a tasty mixed choice of sandwiches and mince pies along with a warming bowl of chicken and vegetable soup. Through the Captain members thanked Chris and the staff in the normal manner and presented the prize for best Santa outfit to Bill Fantom. It was a little disappointing that more members did not make the effort to take part in the Santa fancy dress challenge. Many thanks to Pablo for the voucher which will be auctioned at the Society dinner on 21st December in aid of the Charity group ‘Charity for Charities’. Next meeting is at Font de Llop on 17th January and members should check the web site for further details. Also members are notified of the ‘Golf Challenge’ competition on the 8th of January at Altorreal against local neighbours Shenanigans when the Bull intend retaining the trophy.

A reduced field of only 37 players took part in the first Monthly Medal of 2014 on Thursday 2 January 2014 at our home course of La Marquesa. It was also an important date in the Stanley household as Chris had a major birthday today. So if you saw 3 ladies with Champagne bottles at the ready it was Chris and her friends celebrating the event. I wonder why there scores were not in the winners? The weather started off a bit unsettled but although it was not sunny we managed to finish the round without getting wet. Scores today were not very good with nobody breaking par. Golf is a strange old game. The Committee would like to thank all those members who

Bull Flanagan Golf Society 20 members turned out today for our first game of the new year, and it seems like everyone had golf lessons for Christmas judging by the scores put in today. I was reasonably happy with my own score then saw that I was about half way down the pack. The last meeting of the year for San Miguel Golf Society saw about 20 brave souls do Stableford battle on a bright, warm December day where the wind whipped up a bit, just managing to keep the conditions a little shy of perfect. Quite a number of the gents’ tee boxes were being worked on and the yellow blocks had been moved, thankfully, to the forward tee. There was the odd murmur of dissent from the few ladies but the guys were not to have their concentration broken and defended the situation with such comments as, “You’ve still got a yard or two’s advantage, what do you want?” I think some of the better players had probably slightly

overdone the “Christmas spirit” in every sense of the phrase, as no-one, despite the day’s advantages, managed to beat par. It was good to see Kevin Port strutting the fairways on a Yuletide visit before returning to the UK…..he hinted we may see a bit more of him in 2014/5, I do hope so, he’s been a SMGS member and supporter for many a year. Sleeves of Srixon balls went to the NTP winners who were Richard Wale (Hole 3), Capt. Steve Davis (Hole 6), Marg Birtwistle (Hole 13)…..that’s cos the ladies had about a 5 yard advantage there!.......and Joost Boelhouwer (Hole 16). Prizes went to the top 2 in each of the 3 divisions – Bronze category saw Steve Davis

take 2nd spot with 34 points, just beaten by in-form Chris Hamblett with 35 points. Silver category’s top 2 were Ken Potts with 32 and young Joost Boelhouwer with a very commendable 35. Gold saw its top 2 both shoot 34 and the count-back determined the ol’ guy, Theo Boelhouwer, to be in 2nd spot beaten on the back nine by Ken Flaherty….well done to all the prize-winners. Thursday the 2nd of January is our next game which will be at Villamartin. The first day was a bit rough . The guys were clearly alittle bit nervous with all the at tention they got and that w a s obvious in the first game . T h i s was not a very good game and

Sporting Campsol playing a tournament in Holland Sporting Camposol was invited to participate in one of the biggist indoor tournaments in the north part of Holland . On December 27, the first round took place . Sporting had to end up with the first two then it was automatically qualified for the final round the next day .

How did this adventure all achieved : I asked the coach of Sporting :

The results of the day were: Gold Division: 1st Brian Coultate 34pts, 2nd Mike Johnson 33 pts and 3rd Brian Leys 31pts Silver Division: 1st Paul Flanaghan 34pts, 2nd George Stuart 32pts c/b and 3rd Gordon Cobb 32pts Bronze Division: 1st Margaret O’Brien 32pts, 2nd Dave Keating 29pts and 3rd Danny MacErlean 28pts. LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Here we are December 11th and our penultimate game before Christmas and the New Year and Villamartin proved a great venue. Forty of our members and guests travelled the short distance to the course looking forward to our last stableford of the year. After this game all scores for the year are looked at and calculated to find out who the Player of the Year will be and also which pair would win the Chosen Pairs. Everyone was interested in each other scores trying to guess the out come of these majors. The course looked a bit worn with the trampling of many feet over the past months but all in all the day went well. The weather was fair to cool just perfect for good scoring, but one of our members who was having a particularly trying day was further exacerbated by seeing his ball ball end up in a bunker after it was hit by another ball. He philosophically said that

Murcia Match play league On another great day for Golf our fourth match was held at Las Ramblas .As always a difficult time to play with a lot of the players off back to the UK. However with that said the results confirm that this is going to be a very tight fought league. Our first game brought together the two top teams leaders Roco-Juna against second placed Club 25 the ever improving Club25 were on this occasion to strong for boys from Roco Juna running out winners by 7pts to 1 & holes 28 to 18. Second off were neighbours La-Manga v/s Hacienda.I,m sorry to say Ian your team rotation method does not seem to be working another 7pts to 1 & 26 to 17 holes won for La-Manga pushing them up the table. Next into the fray SanJavier v/s Marinasol and San-Javier ran out winners by 5pts to 3pts & 24holes each won. San-Javier

remain the only unbeaten team in the league.Last years champions were next to test the Las-Ramblas ravines only to run up a drawn game with the ever improving Costa-Blanca 4pts each with 25 to 24 holes won. In the last game Sierra Golf claimed the game when The Sprightly Crew could not raise a team the rule being that 8pts & 24 holes won are awarded to the team who turn-up & play. Now the boys were loose . The third game was won in gallery style with a sore 6-1 . The crowd stood on the banks of enthusiasm . Everytime Sporting had to play the people come out and watch. The 4th match was won 51 and the 6th match 6-2. So the first job was done. Now everyone had seen Sporting Camposol and everybody said it..... one of the favorites . After the first day Sporting had two topscorers Pirri & Moha 10x . So the final day is an easy job: I asked Jelco Oosterhof : ¨hahaha no way, I don´t think so. But the boys thouhgt now we can beat everybody. But I know from experience that the second day is even more difficult .
