An action group of concerned residents is demanding the FCC Services plant at Las Canyades be closed down. They claim that there are toxic gasses escaping from the plant, and have commissioned a scientific report, which seems to back their opinions. The report noted that there were ‘potentially dangerous gases being released from the plant, with an unacceptable odour, and posing a significant risk to health’. When approached by the residents the Mayor Juan Jose Berenguer insisted that he is striving to find a solution to the problem. The matter has been raised in the European Parliament, however, the Mayor seems reluctant to believe that it is anything more than a bad smell. The plant was opened in 2008 with an investment of 47.6 million euros. It processes the waste from 52 Alicante municipalities, and has a scheduled 20 year period of use.
Santiago de la Ribera
After being closed and effectively abandoned for 2 years the Pescadería de Miguel, located on the beach of Playa Barnuevo in Santiago de la Ribera, has been demolished. However, the building was not without its supporters, who claim that the Junta has acted without discretion or regard to local history and has been too hasty ordering the bulldozers in before a final solution has been reached. While some regarded the Pescadería as a historical building, to others it was an eyesore and a health hazard, attracting graffiti artists of the wrong sort. Nobody denies that the Pescaderia de Miguel is part of the original Mar Menor, as it developed during the 1960s. As the resort began to develop into its present day form the Pescaderia was built in 1965. Initially it functioned as a fish wholesaler, selling locally caught fresh fish. Over time in response to demand it evolved into a popular local fish restaurant. Its problems began in 1988 with the passing of the Ley de Costas; a law designed to prevent the urbanisation of virgin coasts. Despite it originally being given a 99 year lease when it was built in 1965, a stay of execution until 2010, and a vigorous campaign for supporters for its exemption on the grounds of historical interest, the owners were evicted, and the building has now been completely demolished, in what many see as a short-sighted exercise in political correctness.

The action by pharmacists, now in its fourth week, is causing chaos to customers. The closing of pharmacias, which effectively amounts to a strike, is over the Government’s non-payment of subsidies for prescription drugs. A meeting held at the HQ of the Alicante College of Pharmacists heard that the Government remains months in arrears in its payments to pharmacies. A vote of 4-1 in favour of continued action was taken. Effectively this action means that over-the-counter medicines can be bought, but prescription medicines are ‘not available.’ However, in many cases it is possible to buy prescribed medication over the counter, an anomaly that the pharmacists explain by saying that without the Government paying them, they can not afford to order the drugs, as they can not pay the suppliers for goods ordered. However, if they already have the drug in store, and the customer is willing to meet the true cost of it, then it will be dispensed to them. Advice to those who have had difficulty in obtaining necessary medication is to shop around – or pay!

Family saved from repossession by anonymous benefactor A family has been saved from being thrown out on the street by an anonymous donor who saw on TV that their house was about to be repossessed. The 8,500-euro payment from a kind benefactor means they will be able to hand over the keys to their property in Vigo (Galicia) in exchange for wiping out the mortgage debt entirely, and will be allowed to carry on living in their house for a very low rent. The owners took out a mortgage in 2004, but by around April 2010 they found it impossible to pay the mortgage, and put their home up for sale. But the house did not sell, leaving them in arrears. As well as facing repossession, they also had to pay off their outstanding IBI property tax and expenses for the community of owners, which they had not been able to find the money for. All this led to amounts exceeding 8,000 euros, which they said they simply could not pay – and they were terrified about where they would end up living if they could not. Additionally, the couple’s daughter – one of their three children - is very ill and would not have survived on the street. When they heard that an unnamed donor had given them 8,500 euros, they said they felt as though they had won the lottery, and went straight to Novagalicia Bank to sign the papers. They will also now be able to seek funding for their daughter to be treated by a specialist neurologist in Navarra.
Cáritas: ‘Around three million people in Spain are homeless’
Nearly three million people in Spain sleep on the streets every night because they have no home of their own, or live in homeless shelters, according to research by the charity Cáritas.
In Madrid alone, 600 people live on the pavement, and when combined with those who live in shelters, youth hostels or flitting between cheap guest houses, the total comes to over 3,000. About another 4,000 people in the north-western region of Galicia are homeless, and a further 500 in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Cáritas has been unable to find details of the number of children who are living on the streets, but they say they are hearing of more and more cases of entire families with no home. The number of women who have nowhere to live
is also rising, with 15 per cent of those attending ‘emergency’ homeless shelters – where people are offered a free bed for the night for six or seven days – being women in 2011, increasing to 22 per cent this year. Cáritas says a person without a home ‘has no access to their basic rights’ and ‘no dignity’, meaning they and their lives are ‘totally destroyed and at stalemate’. A homeless charity, Xarxa d’Atenció a Persones Sense Llar, or XAPSLL (‘attention network for people without homes’) says: “Something is not working in society and in the economy if there are people out there with nowhere to live.” Recent evictions have also raised the plight of the homeless in the public eye.

Jews expelled from Spain get Spanish European Commission citizenship - 520 years later! Calls For Justification From Spain For Airport Tax Hike
All descendants of the Jews who were thrown out of Spain during the inquisition in the year 1492 are now entitled to Spanish nationality – wherever they live in the world. The Civil Code entry relating to this issue, which dates back to 1982, states that the Sephardic people of Israel and Turkey have to be living in Spain for a minimum of two years before they can apply for citizenship, but this has been amended to let them do so immediately and even if they have never been to or lived in the country.
Spouses of the Sephardim and their children aged under 18 are also covered by all rights to protection and assistance
offered by the Spanish Consulate.
They will have to accredit the fact they are direct descendants of the Jews expelled from Spain at the end of the 15th century by their surnames, native language, connection to Spanish culture and customs, or by legitimately tracing and proving their origins via their family tree. Spain’s ministries of justice and foreign affairs – led by Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón and José Manuel García-Margalló respectively – say that 520 years on from the Inquisition, there are possibly as many as a quarter of a million native speakers of the minority Judaic-Spanish dialect found in certain parts of Israel and Turkey.
Domestic violence victims stay silent through fear of financial hardship Nearly two-thirds of victims of domestic violence do not report their attackers because they are afraid of being left homeless and impoverished, research has shown. The survey, carried out by the Adecco Foundation, reveals that 76 per cent of abuse victims would have felt ‘stronger’ and more able to leave their violent partners – or at least report them – if they had a job. With the lack of available employment, many are forced to stay living with their abusers as they have no income and no way of living independently. A total of 64 per cent of victims said they could not risk reporting their assailants to the police, in case they ended up
with no way of supporting themselves financially.
And 73 per cent of those interviewed said they had not been able to find work, so they were stuck living with their abusers. The survey found that the typical domestic violence victim is female, aged between 36 and 45, with at least one child, and with only basic education. However, although these represented the majority, only around a half of all victims fitted this profile, with the rest being all ages and levels of education, and some being men.
European Commissioners have demanded an explanation from Spain over airport tax increases which have particularly risen in Barajas and El Prat. Following complaints from various airlines as to the extra costs they are facing, the Commission has written to Mariano Rajoy’s cabinet to ask them to justify how their own expenses of running Spain’s airports make the tax hikes necessary. The government has two months to reply before further action is taken. Airlines and travel agencies say the tax rises flout EU rules.
If this is found to be the case and the increases are not justified, the Commission may take the case to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg, or force the country to recalculate duties it charges to flight operators. Carrier firms say they have not been properly consulted before the rises were applied. The EC says airlines are being put off using Spanish airports because of the cost, especially those of Madrid (Barajas) and Barcelona (El Prat) where taxes have doubled in the past year with no apparent explanation. Minimum requisites for calculating taxes are required according to a European Directive issued on the matter in 2009, and consultation with affected airlines is required before these are put in place. All airport users should be given sufficient information about taxes in advance, the Directive requires.

Automatic residence rights for foreign homebuyers in Spain
Foreigners who buy properties in Spain valued at 160,000 euros or more may automatically get residence cards in a new government initiative to encourage homebuyers from overseas. They say the move is mainly aimed at Chinese and Russian nationals, but does not believe it will lead to a sudden rush for residence certificates to be approved. And as yet, the threshold of 160,000 euros is merely a guideline which may change in the future with fluctuations in the market. They say it is mainly so that when holiday home owners from outside the
EU wish to travel to Spain to spend time in their properties, they will not have to apply for a visa every time they want to get into the country. With well over a quarter of a million homes in Spain sitting empty and most Spanish people being unable to afford to buy them because of job loss or, where they are working, banks’ new restrictions on offering mortgage finance, the only way to revive the housing market in the country is by attracting foreign buyers – of which there are plenty interested, the government says. And now that the market has suffered such a dramatic
fall with prices at a fraction of what they were five years ago, more and more buyers from abroad are seeing property in Spain as an investment. Giving people residence rights automatically when they buy a home has already been introduced in Portugal and the Republic of Ireland. At present, buying a property is no guarantee that the purchaser will be given residence in Spain. They are obliged to have a NIE number, but are frequently only given a temporary residence card that does not allow them to work
A Ferrari totalled by Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo is now up for sale on eBay. The Portuguese footballer smashed the sports car into a wall in the UK in January 2009, during his time with Manchester United. It has been posted on the internet auction site with a starting bid of 50,000 euros. A car of the same make and model – Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano F1 – normally retails at 250,000 euros new. Ronaldo’s smashed-up version has just 3,099 kilometres on the clock. Its seller is a specialist in top-of-the-range car parts based in Duppigheim, eastern France, and says it is completely repairable and would be roadworthy again once the necessary work was carried out. The car was damaged while Ronaldo was on his way to the Carrington football ground for a training session, during which he veered off the motorway. Although the front part is severely dented, the player escaped unharmed. Photos on eBay show the car from several angles and also the vehicle registration document bearing the name of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Radio Controlled Model group Well summer as gone and you may just be looking for a new hobby to fill in all that time you have on your hands over this winter. Then why not try sailing, Radio Controlled sailing. I am talking about a great pastime whether you are a beginner or a seasoned sailor it is worth giving it a try.
The new Radio Control model group based in Los Alcázares is now one year old, and runs under the name of R.C Mar Menor Sailing Group. The group has progressed well over its first 12 months. The R.C. group is one of a number of S.A.M.M. (Sailing Association Mar Menor) groups and members can enjoy the full range of benefits that S.A.M.M. has to offer including an active social scene and the opportunity to join in and sail a number of different full size boats if that takes your fancy. We are based at the sports college of Infanta Cristina on the shores of the Mar Menor and enjoy the use of the college’s excellent sailing facilities. Our racing series has now started and our members are getting use to tuning their boats to get the best out of them, with some just learning to sail for the
very first time.
We have started with some friendly Handicap racing to define the different capabilities of each boat and judge the popularity of the different classes of boats, so we can progress running class racing alongside handicap racing. With all new clubs it is a matter of wait and see what boats people want to buy and I believe that variety is the spice of life. In the short term it looks like the International One Metre will form the first boat class for racing with 4 already on the water and more being built. The I.O.M. has it is known as world wide support and has been in production for more than 30 years with national competitions in Europe, USA, New Zealand, and Australia, and world championships run every year. Three years ago the Spanish National Championships where held at the college over a 3 day period with some 14 boats taking part. We have already attracted a wide range of boat types and owners with an equally wide range of diverse skills. Their skills are always available to members and they are willing to assist if need be. The group caters for all tastes whether you are a seasoned model boat builder or you prefer your boat straight

The range of boats we have attracted so far to our Friday morning get together is very varied from the compact Victoria at 750mm long, up to the mighty 5 foot long American East Coast 12 metre, also including a Thunder Tiger, four International One Metres, and a Austrian Smaragd. Last year we acquired one of the new American Vela one metre boats, this was shipped in from the states for valuation and trials and looking very good it comes fully built and includes a 2.4 digital R.C. control system, and we now have two. We have also have two Laser which is are copies of the world famous Laser single handed 2.7 class dinghy. In the U.K. sailors of the full size Laser regularly race the R.C. version in winter to sharpen their skills that is if they can break the ice on the local pond, sorry I could not resist that one. The Oxford English Dictionary defines Music as Vocal or instrumental sounds or both combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony and expression of emotion. This to me is the definitive answer. Music has the power to stir the emotions and evoke memories and aspects of our lives. Good times, Bad times everybody has a particular song or piece of music that equates with a certain event or period of their lives. Music has the ability to change your moods to possibly changing your lifestyle. I was a normal teenager until I saw David Bowie singing Starman on Top of the Pops a week later I was a red headed make up wearing Ziggy Stardust clone my dad nearly threw me out of the house! I work on Costa Calida International Radio and my show covers music of different
decades and different genres so hopefully there is something there for everyone. One persons rubbish is another’s all time classic and I often get calls and correspondence asking for more information on a particular track. Talking to people I meet I get asked about particular artists, etc and I thought it would be a good idea to convey information through the most popular magazine in the area. If there is a particular artist, group or album that you wish to know more about you can email me or alternatively contact the magazine and I will put in a forthcoming article. I hope the column will be entertaining, informative and interesting and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do writing it. Sell-out Success for ADHOC’S ‘ALLO‘ALLO
The ADHOC Theatre Group enjoyed their most successful production yet, with full houses on most nights of their ‘Allo ‘Allo production. This success enabled charity donations totalling 2,500€ to Debra Spain (The Butterfly Children) & the Orchestra de Infante at the Escuela de Musica in Los Montesinos.
Audiences were overwhelmed by the authenticity of the original ‘Allo ‘Allo costumes, hired from the UK, and the ingenious set construction, designed by award-winning Richard Winter. There was also great enthusiasm for all of the characters who were immediately recognised from the original TV Series.
All of the hard work and frustration of previous months culminated in proof positive of successful, high energy team work. Not a group to ‘rest on their laurels’ ADHOC have already started preparatory work on their next production - the ghostly comedy ‘Bedwitchery’. The Department of Youth of Rojales Town Hall sets in motion a language exchange programme for foreign residents and Spaniards. Would you like to practice a foreign language with a native speaker for free? The Department of Youth is promoting a language exchange between Spanish people who are learning a foreign language and foreign residents who are learning the Spanish language and culture. Registration is already open in the Rojales Town Hall, Municipal Centre and Culture Centre in Ciudad Quesada and in the Heredades Culture Centre. The language exchange will start in the beginning of 2013, being held at the
Ciudad Quesada Cultural Centre and in the Social Centre in Rojales town. There will be two kinds of language exchange: duo and group, talking half of the time in Spanish and the other half in the chosen foreign language. This programme wants also to promote and help integration between foreign residents and Spanish locals. A further step for social integration. Jaguar - Convoys in Spain New Law - Please read
There is a new law in Spain concerning motor clubs which comes into force in January 2013 regarding Convoys: Any convoy of more than 6 cars will need to inform all of the towns/cities through which they pass and get their acknowledgement/permission. In addition the convoy must have, front and rear, responsible persons in charge and in communication with each other. Breach of the law would see the club and its members fined. Although the JEC Spain is not registered as an official car club in Spain but affiliated with JEC UK, I think it is better not to tempt fate or test the law. If it was decided to organise an event involving a convoy, this new law would increase my workload dramatically and if we get it wrong, we could put the club and it’s participating members at risk of a fine. Hence as from January, JEC Spain will not be organising events with a convoy element. However that does not stop us visiting different venues as a group of friends and making our own way there at our own time, just make sure that if you see any other members on route to the same location make sure not to allow more than 6 cars to travel in a “convoy” like format. Travelling to a meeting, like our normal meetings at Los Almendros is not an issue.

Our bodies really are amazing machines!! Did you know that every hurt, abuse, trauma, loss, betrayal, sensation of fear or being scared and the relevant feelings that are attached to all of these are recorded at an energetic and a cellular level by our bodies? Even when we have been verbally abused and or threatened our body keeps records of these incidents. It all gets encoded into our physiology…………… our physical being. How? By leaving ‘electrical imprints’ These electrical imprints go beyond the normal processing of the mind. Image if we had it within us to repair ourselves? To ‘rewire our brain,’ as it were, to obtain relief from emotional conflicts and trauma. To by-pass these ingrained electrical imprints. Well we can! EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) enables us to do just that. EFT operates on the following ‘discovery statement’: “The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” For the body to be free from any of these negative disruptions we need to ‘rewire our brains’. That is to say, we need to make new connections, perceptions and understandings or interpretations. EFT allows us to free these disruptions enabling us to participate in the profound healing that is available to us. To do this we need to listen to our body. Our body is frequently emitting messages and thereby communicating with us. As we would be patient, caring and loving to a friend in need or distress, so too we need to be with ourselves. We need to listen to what our body is telling us. For example, pain of any kind is a very loud signal and is more often than not an unconscious process. Conflicts are manifested throughout the body from emotional tension within the mind. To explain, illnesses or headaches are real: the origin is not however via germs, viruses or bacterial causes but as a result of psychological conflict. Our body is far more intelligent than we give it credit for, as such it can often send us signals in a symbolic way. For example, any pain

Similarly, most shoulder problems are rooted in the feeling of ‘having the world on one’s shoulders,’ of being ‘weighed down’. These causes can more often than not, be treated with EFT. Essential Eye Make-Up Smoky eyes have become a classic party eye makeup look. The secret of this trend’s popularity is that smoky eyes can change your face dramatically, transforming the girl-next-door into a stylish diva.
Once you learn and master these application and blending techniques, the transition will take you only a few minutes and you can then have irresistible-looking eyes at a moments notice.
Colour is key…
You will need one black eye pencil, at least two colours of powder eyeshadow, and dark mascara to produce a fantastic smoky eyes effect. The base colour should be a rich shimmery (not metallic) powder texture. Choose a shade slightly darker than your skin tone. You may choose neutral beige or grey colours for a soft and sophisticated look; or use a bright base for a dramatic look. The contour colour must be a dark, matte, or slightly shimmery colour. Choose between dark brown, blue, green, or purple, depending on the colour of your attire; use black with any outfit for a stunning effect. You may add a third shade to your smoky eyes: a slightly shimmery highlight colour applied just under the eyebrows. This will enlarge the eye area and also soften any demarcation lines that remain after blending. Your normal facial powder can produce the same result if you are aiming for a more sophisticated look. Choose soft black eye pencil or kohl for an enhancing all-around contour. Never use liquid eyeliner; it is for crisp lines, not the soft and sultry look we are aiming for here. Black thickening mascara and stronger-than-usual eyebrows are in tune with smoky eyes makeup.
Application: What to do… Outline your eye contour with a black eye pencil, all the way around. Make the line thicker along the upper lashes. With a brush or a sponge applicator, apply your base colour eyeshadow on the mobile eyelid and above the crease, about halfway to the eyebrows, blending slightly. With a pointy sponge applicator, apply contour colour eyeshadow all the way around your eyes, blending it well with the pencil line. Half-close your eyes and apply contour colour in the crease.

You will now need to define the outside corners of your eyes using a horizontal “V” shape; the position of the pointy end of the “V” will control the apparent shape of your eyes. With a medium-sized soft round brush (you can also use a flat one, holding it sideways), blend the eyeshadows on the upper eyelid. With a flat brush, blend the eyeshadows on the lower eyelid. Repeat your contour colour application with a sponge, as many times as needed to achieve a deep shade. Blend again with brushes after every application. Apply highlight colour eyeshadow or facial powder under your eyebrows to ease the blending of the dark contour and add some volume to your eye makeup. For an irresistible deep regard, outline the inside contour of your eyes with eye pencil. Use darker-than-usual eyebrows and lots of mascara to finish the look. Your eyes should now be smokier then ever before! To keep your bright eye makeup in balance, try a stronger blush but keep your lips pale with a light gloss application in a peachy colour.

Can you Catch A Scratch?
Scratching can be catching, new research has shown. Just like yawns, scratching an itch is contagious, say scientists. The sight of someone trying to get rid of an itch can lead us to scratch ourselves - without even knowing it. Researchers tested 30 volunteers to see if visual cues could trigger itching and compel them to scratch. Participants were shown “itch-related” images such as ants, fleas, or skin rashes, or neutral photos including butterflies and healthy skin. Some pictures only showed a possible cause of itching, such as ants crawling on the skin, while others depicted itchy people scratching or washing their hands. As volunteers looked at each image, they were asked how itchy they felt. The scientists also recorded the number of times participants scratched themselves. The results, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, showed that visual images alone can trigger itch sensations. But it was watching another person scratching, rather than just seeing the cause of the itch, that led the volunteers to scratch themselves. Lead scientist Professor Francis McGlone,

In previous articles, we’ve discussed the benefits of replacing lost teeth with titanium implants. PUBLIC LIGHTING OF MENORAH
This year there is to be a public lighting of a Menorah at Playa Flamenca. Chanukah is a Jewish festival that dates back to the year 165 BCE. At that time Jerusalem was ruled by a Syrian king called Antiochus. He looted and damaged the Temple in Jerusalem and stopped the Jews from practicing their laws and religion. This upset the Jews so much that they rebelled. The rebellion was successful and the Temple was restored to its former state. A new altar was consecrated but there was only enough oil for the altar lamp to burn for one day. However the lamp burnt for eight days and a miracle was declared by the Jewish leaders. To celebrate this miracle an eight-day observance is created ever year by lighting one candle each day in a Menorah (a special candelabra) until all eight candles are burning. The Menorah is placed in public places to remind people of the miracle. This year the Southern Costa Blanca Jewish Community will again be lighting the Menorah on the steps of the amphitheatre opposite the Lobster Restaurant at Playa Flamenca Beach at 7.30pm on Saturday 15th December. The nearest road is Calle Orchideas. Following the lighting ceremony we shall be serving wine and do-nuts. APAH Animal Rescue Charity is facing one of the worst possible decisions an Animal Charity ever has to face. For the first time in it’s 12 year history, it is possible that APAH may have to close it’s Cattery. The Cattery, located just outside Campoverde, is home to around 60 cats and kittens, and there is nothing worse for a charity than facing the prospect of losing the animals it has committed into it’s care. Ironically in the middle of this economic recession, the reason for this situation is not financial, but due to a serious lack of volunteers to help care for the cats and kittens. A charity responsible for looking after animals, has to staff it’s facilities 7 days per week, 365 days a year. Cats must be fed, cleaned out and provided with clean drinking water every day. Cats on medication must be cared for
every day. It is not possible to leave them for one or two days a week, because there is no-one to look after them. The current lack of helpers, means that the volunteers APAH has are seriously stretched to the limit, and close to being unable to provide the level of care that has always been a priority of the Charity. Unless APAH is able to attract some more volunteers to work a few hours a week, it will have no other choice but to close the Cattery down. All that is needed to secure the future of APAH’s cats and kittens is a few more people to contact them, offering their help for just 3 hours a day. The total collected from Iceland was 2,566.65 euro, and 550 euro from Poppy Merchandise. Next year could bring a new twist in the evolution of the smartphone. Samsung are gearing up to produce flexible, unbreakable mobile phone screens that can be bent, twisted and even folded up and put in your wallet. The South Korean tech giant reportedly has the flexible screens in the final stage of development and will be ready to ship them next year. The breakthrough has been made by through the use of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), which are thin and can be put on flexible material such as plastic or metal foil. Samsung is not the only company to have invested heavily in research into flexible screens using OLEDs. Companies including Japan’s Sony and LG Display, also of South Korea have launched prototypes. However Samsung is the first to promise a launch date for the technology, with an unnamed source ‘familiar with the situation’ telling the Wall Street Journal they will ship in the first half of 2013. Looking at the release dates of the company’s flagship smartphones, the S series, that suggests that the first device to feature the flexible screen technology could be the yet to be announced S4. The company’s move to produce the flexible displays comes as smartphone and tablet makers search for ways to differentiate their products in a market where customers face a glut of almost identical products. Vinita Jakhanwal, director of mobile and emerging displays and technology at IHS Electronics and Media, told Tech News World: ‘Flexible AMOLEDs can help Samsung differentiate its products in a smartphone market where most products offer similar
products and functionality.’ Even if Samsung were not able to able able to commercialise flexible screens straight away, making their screens out of plastic rather than glass would make their devices lighter, more durable and cheaper than rivals’. A common bugbear with the kinds of touchscreen displays often used on mobile devices is that they are brittle and prone to cracking. Replacing the glass now used with plastic would solve that problem. Samsung had previously promised to bring flexible displays to market this year, but that deadline came and went without any announcement from the company. However, the company’s push for innovation has become more urgent as other display makers are also introducing different technologies for mobile phone and tablet screens. Sony has been researching the same flexible screen technology since 2002, and showcased a 4.1in flexible OLED two years ago, the same time as Samsung showed off their version of the technology. However, a spokesman for Sony told the Wall Street Journal he couldn’t comment on when the company would begin mass producing the displays. And earlier this year, Apple filed a patent for ‘electronic devices with flexible displays’ that included features like on-screen keyboards that can be modified to handle concave or convex curves. Lee Chang-hoon, vice president of Samsung’s display division, told the Journal his company has sent out samples of the new displays to a few select customers, but added that the release dates of any new products using the technology has not yet been confirmed.

Sales of garlic are booming in western Serbia after the local council issued a public health warning that a vampire was on the loose. The warning came after an old ruined mill, said to once have been the home of notorious vampire Sava Savanovic, collapsed. Savanovic was said to have lived in the old watermill on the Rogacica river, at Zarozje village in the municipality of Bajina Basta where he drank the blood of anybody that came to mill their grain. The watermill was bought by the local Jagodic family, and they were too scared to use it as a mill - but discovered it was a goldmine when they started advertising it to tourists. But the family were worried about carrying out building work on the mill because they were scared they might disturb the vampire or unleash his wrath if his home was messed around with - and now the property has
collapsed through lack of repair. But for locals it has sparked rumours that the vampire is now free once again. Local mayor Miodrag Vujetic admitted: “People are worried, everybody knows the legend of this vampire and the thought that he is now homeless and looking for somewhere else and possibly other victims is terrifying people. We are all frightened.” He added that it was all very well for people who didn’t live in the area to laugh at their fears but he said nobody in the region was in any doubt that vampires do exist. He confirmed that the local council had advised all villagers to put garlic on their doors and windows to protect them from the vampire as it was well known they can’t stand the smell. He added: “We have also reminded them to put a Holy cross in every room in the house.”
Toy boat to set off on Atlantic crossing
A retired Nato scientist will this week launch his toy boat on what he hopes will be the first unmanned trip across the Atlantic. Robin Lovelock has spent four years developing a craft which he believes can survive the 6,000 mile journey. The Snoopy Sloop is only 4ft long, weighs just 30lbs and is held together in parts by bathroom light cord, reports the Daily Telegraph. But it has already demonstrated its endurance, having completed more than 5,000 miles of almost continuous sailing, on Bray Lake, near Windsor, over seven months. Now it faces a more testing voyage, battling the seas, and possibly storms, of the North Atlantic, despite being a fraction of the size of shipping which normally
makes the winter crossing. Mr Lovelock, 65, built the boat in the games room of his house in Sunninghill, Berkshire, from off-theshelf parts scoured from the internet at a cost of less than £450. The boat will be powered by the wind, but navigated by a solar-powered computer and GPS system. These will steer the boat on a route along the Channel, then south towards the Azores to catch the trade winds to the Bahamas and onwards to land near where the Pilgrim Fathers came ashore at Plymouth, Massachusetts. Mr Lovelock has been assisted by a group of friends, he has described as his “Last of the Summer Wine” team, including a former veteran of the Robot Wars BBC television show. “I got hooked about four years ago,” he said. “I didn’t even play with model boats when I was a boy. I sometimes tinker on the boat in the lounge, but am usually banished to the games room by my wife.” The attempt is being made as part of an international contest, the Microtransat Challenge, to become the first to send an unmanned boat from south of Ireland to the Bahamas.

Q: I understand that the government has created incentives to try and get people to purchase properties. Can you explain them?
A. This is correct. The government in it’s desperation to get the property market moving and to try and help the builders and banks sell their properties has legislated fantastic incentives, but up to now only professional real estate investors seem to be taking advantage. There are two particular incentives out there at this moment that are fantastic is combined with well-priced property. 1. New properties, which up to now where subject to V.A.T at 8% will only, pay 4% up to the end of this year. After that V.A.T. on new properties will be 10%. This does not affect second hand property, which is still subject to transfer tax of 8%. 2. Any urban property (villas, houses, flats, garages) purchased from now until the end of this year will have a special treatment when eventually sold. Whatever capital gains tax rate is applicable when it’s sold will be halved. You are entitled to use both these incentives combined: The conclusion: Buy a new build property before the end of this year and you will save 4% on your purchase (6% if you compare to the rate that will be applicable from the 1st of January of 2013), and half of your capital gains tax when you sell. BE CAREFULL: The first exemption is only on new properties, subject to V.A.T (not on second hand ones subject to transfer tax), and the second exemption does not apply to rustic properties (farmhouses etc). UK economic growth confirmed at 1%
The UK economy grew by 1% between July and September, official figures have confirmed. Last month, the Office for National Statistics’ first estimate showed the surprisingly strong growth, bringing to an end a nine-month long recession. The Olympic Games helped to boost growth over the summer. Many analysts had expected the growth figure to be revised down. But earlier figures were slightly weaker than previously thought. Compared with a year earlier, as opposed to the previous quarter, the economy contracted by 0.1%, whereas the previous estimate had shown flat growth. Strong consumer spending, which grew by 0.6%, was an important factor behind the strong quarterly growth. The services sector grew by 1.3%, unchanged from the ONS’ previous estimate, but growth in industrial production was revised down to 0.9% from 1.1%. The contraction in the construction sector was also revised to show a slightly steeper drop.
The third quarter growth figure was enhanced by comparison with the previous three months, when an extra public holiday as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations hit growth. The ONS will revise its growth figures for the third quarter again next month, when it will have a more comprehensive set of data for the UK’s economic performance. Despite the confirmation of strong growth, analysts warned that it may be short lived. “If anything, the details in the new data further highlight the temporary nature of the upturn,” said Chris Williamson at research group Markit. “Payback is likely in the fourth quarter.” David Owen at investment banking group Jefferies said: “People are generally expecting GDP to have slowed sharply into the fourth quarter on the published figure, or indeed to have actually contracted slightly compared to the third quarter.” Report courtesy of bbc.co.uk

Mark Carney named new Bank of England governor
Mark Carney has been named as the new governor of the Bank of England by Chancellor George Osborne. Mr Carney, the governor of the Canadian central bank, will serve for five years and will hold new regulatory powers over banks. He was a surprise choice for the head of the UK’s central bank and had previously ruled himself out. The post is seen as one of the most important positions in the stewardship of the UK economy. Current governor Sir Mervyn King steps down from the post next June. Sir Mervyn said Mr Carney represented “a new generation of leadership for the Bank of England, and is an outstanding choice to succeed me”. Mr Osborne told Parliament that Mr Carney, 47, would bring the “strong leadership and external experience the Bank needs” and added that the Canadian would apply for British citizenship. He said Mr Carney was acknowledged as “the outstanding central banker of his generation”. During Mr Carney’s five years as governor in Canada, Mr Osborne said he was “acknowledged to have weathered the economic storm better than any other major Western

economy”. Mr Carney said he was “honoured to accept this important and demanding role” at a “critical time for the British, European and global economies”. He will serve in his current post until May next year. Mr Carney said he was “not without ties” to the UK - his wife is a dual national of the UK and Canada. Shadow chancellor Ed Balls welcomed the incoming governor as a “good choice, good judgement”. Andrew Tyrie, chairman of the Treasury Select Committee, told the BBC that Mr Carney “ticks all the boxes” but added that his committee would question him on matters such as how he will approach macro-prudential stability and what his views on quantitative easing are. The British Chambers of Commerce said it hoped that the new governor would “focus relentlessly on supporting business growth across the UK - not just in the Square Mile”. The CBI said Mr Carney’s “strong track record as the Canadian central bank governor and extensive experience in international financial regulation mean that he is well positioned to guide Britain through challenging economic times”.

By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ What a week this proved to be with some of the top contenders underperforming and the bottom contenders raising their game. I was disappointed with some and amazed with the improvement in others. Opening the show were team Smurf Dani & Vincent and their Samba. I have to say that this was definitely the best samba in any show of any series. The Samba is notoriously the most difficult dance to perform because of the rhythm and style changes involved but Dani continues to come up on the rails with excellent control, a great use of Samba steps, she oozed rhythm and had great hips. She just missed out on a 10 because she didn’t quite finish off her arms but I awarded her a 9 and she gained 36 and second place from the judges. Next to dance were Kimberley & Pasha with their Tango. Again a brilliant improvement on last week, this dance was extremely slick with all the characteristic staccatto head movements. Just marring her performance was the fact that she consistently keeps her chin tucked down and her shoulders are still rounded. Correct this and she could also be a contender for one of the latter places. I awarded her a 9 and the judges a total of 34.
Following were Victoria & Brendan and a Salsa. This contained great ‘armography’ the use of spaghetti arms within the dance!. She seems to have cured her fear of turns and showed some good lifts but unfortunately it was lacking punch and hips essential for this dance. I gave her a 6 and one of my bottom 2 and the judges bottom placed with 21. Lewis & Flavia then performed Paso Doble. The music was awful - a Michael Jackson number - and unfortunately the character of the dance suffered as a result. I was again disappointed in Lewis’ performance and somehow he needs to find his acting skills to get back to the top of the leader board. I gave him an 8 and the judges 27. Next to perform were Lisa & Robin and a Rumba. Unfortunately Lisa didn’t look comfortable with this dance and made it look like hard work. Again I didn’t particularly like the music used as again it detracted from the Rumba characteristics. Lisa didn’t have sufficient floor pressure to power through to her hips and as a result no Rumba strength was visible. I awarded her a 7 and the judges 27. Following were Michael & Natalie with and Argentine Tango. Sorry Michael but you just

don’t do it for me, I found this ungainly, bent over, plonky, and lacking the leg flicks and characteristic Argentine moves. I gave him a 5 and the judges a 26 and in next to bottom spot. Next out were one of the most improved dancers this week Nicky & Karen. I had almost written him off from the competition but the choreography used for this Charleston was excellent and he showcased all the cheek needed. I loved it and gave him an 8 and the judges 36 and in joint 2nd place. Closing the show were Denise & James with an American Smooth based on Foxtrot. As expected from Denise she pulled it out of the bag yet again with seamless transitions between the open moves and ballroom hold. Great solo turns and lifts and an effortless gliding and smooth Foxtrot with elegance all the way. Well done Denise I gave her a 9 and the judges just had her in
top place with 37. In the bottom 2 were Michael and Natalie and Victoria & Brendan. Michael had a unanimous vote to survive but I would have had Natalie through for the following week. Now we are really getting down to the latter very difficult stages and even more hours will be needed to retain their top spots or to try to knock the top dancers from their positions. For me Dani & Vincent could still come through as dark horses although Denise is consistent. Lewis has disappointed me somewhat the last 2 weeks and must address the acting side to have any chance of challenging. Who do you have to win? Let’s see what happens next week, or if you can’t wait come and join in our gossip at one of our classes or Saturday social. Til next week Keep Dancing!
SPANISH AND ENGLISH WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE CHILDREN IN ELCHE
Jose Antonio Gonzalez, better known as Pepe Barcelo, Managing Director of Grupo Barceló building company and Real Estate Agency in Ciudad Quesada will be the main sponsor for The Cinderella Bling Ball at Quesada Country Club on Friday November 30th. The Cinderella Bling Ball was to help raise enough money to buy a Christmas present for each of the 28 children in the Children’s Home in Elche, this event was not advertised as it was SOLD OUT as soon as the tickets were released! Organised by Anne Day and supported by Lorraine Johnson we think this was due to several things, the popularity of the band PDQ Pete Izzy and Lee, the additional act and support of The Variety Show Group and not least the Venue itself - Quesada Country Club where Anita and Dave and their staff could not be more helpful. It is a very popluar venue and we did in fact “catch” two of the staff dancing to some very catchy music one lunchtime!!! Pepe Barcelo will organise balloons for the tables in the Spanish Colours of Red and Yellow and provide other decorations in red and yellow. Pepe will also provide the First Prize for the raffle of a Traditional Turkey Dinner for Two that can be collected from
the lovely Fernando at the wonderful Spanish Supermarket Canales also in Quesada. Pepe has known one of the guests Susan Reader for many years, his building company put the second floor on her home in Quesada and then went on to do work on recommendation for some of her friends also living in Ciudad Quesada. Susan said: “I am delighted Pepe has sponsored this event and I hope to talk with him about bringing a spade or two along when we start “The Garden Project” in February, but that’s another story!!”
The ladies involved in this fundraising said: “You may have seen that we have already reached our target to buy the Christmas presents so the money raised at this event will either pay for Christmas food for the children or it will go towards The Garden Project.” The next event for The Children is again at Quesada Country Club on Friday 8th February and once again with PDQ, tickets will be €13.50 and this is for three courses and a bottle of wine between two, this time it is a Black and White Sixties Night!! SUPER STAR, SUPER SCORER by Tony Matthews
The Barcelona and Argentinian footballersupreme, Lionel Messi, is now in striking distance of breaking Gerd Muller’s record for most goals scored in a calendar year at competitive level – a record that until recently looked as if it would not be challenged. The ‘little man’ needs to find the back of the net just four times in six games to beat the German striker’s world record haul of 85 goals which was set 40 years ago in 1972. Muller, who won the European Cup, four Bundesliga titles and the World Cup during his career with Bayern Munich and West Germany, played in just 60 games for club and country to achieve his record. If Messi scores his 86th goal of 2012 in Barcelona’s final La Liga game of the year versus Real Valladolid at the Nou Camp on 22 December, his appearance tally will be 70. But as the 25 year-old Messi closes in on Muller’s record, it is fair to ask whose achievement is greater? I feel that the number of appearances alone fail to prove that Muller’s achievement was the more impressive, particularly because 12 of his goals came in an obscure and shortlived competition, the DFB-Ligapokal, the now defunct German League Cup. With Munich staging the summer Olympics that year, the start of the 1972-73 Bundesliga season was delayed until mid-September, so a League Cup competition was created to bridge the gap and ensure that all teams played matches to help generate income. At first, Bayern Munich did not take the competition seriously, sending out an understrength team in its opening away tie, Muller being an absentee. This enraged the home supporters, who had paid good money to watch Bayern’s celebrated first-team players. A photographer even filed a fraud lawsuit against the Munich club. Thereafter, Bayern fielded their first team and Muller went on to bag 12 goals in five games, including a four-timer against a struggling Second Division Regional League team, FC Hof. Strength of schedule is one factor in the difference between the respective appearance and scoring totals of Messi and Muller. But there is also the issue of the globalization of the top European Leagues. While Muller netted 13 goals at international level and 11 in various European club matches, 42 of his 85 strikes in 1972 came in 34 Bundesliga matches at a time when the top soccer talent was spread a lot more thinly across Europe and indeed, the world. So far this year, Messi has scored 52 goals in 34 La Liga games and while being assisted by two brilliant midfielders in Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez, he regularly faces the game’s best defenders. This was not so when Muller was around!
Of Messi’s other 28 goals so far this year, 12 have come with Argentina, including a hattrick in a friendly against Brazil in New Jersey; 11 in the Champions League; three in the Copa del Rey and two in the Spanish Super Cup. However, I feel – and having been involved in football for many years - that drawing comparisons between eras is never an exact science. Suffice to say, Messrs Messi and Muller have a great deal in common - their ability to score goals and do so often. Both have been the leading scorer in the European Cup/Champions League on four occasions and earlier this year (in March) Messi joined Muller as the 11th player to have netted five times in a single European Cup/ Champions League match. That five-goal haul, which Messi claimed in a 7-1 drubbing of Bayer Leverkusen, came in the middle of an 18-goal scoring run, spread over eight games, during which time he also netted four against Valencia and a hat-trick versus Granada. Despite his lack of bulk (he’s only 5ft 7in tall and weights barely 11st) Messi riles defenders with his grace, darting pace and unrivaled close control of the ball, which at times seems to be glued to his feet. He’s won over 30 penalties during his Barcelona days and has picked himself up scored 28 of them! In contrast, Muller was a squat and powerful five-foot-nine poacher who simply hung around the penalty-area waiting to pick up the pieces, which he did to perfection. The cleverness of Messi’s play is matched by a lethal accuracy in front of the goal. And surprisingly he netted only once in his first 14 outings for Barcelona, but now he’s shattering all sorts of scoring records. In addition to his five Spanish championships, three Champions Leagues titles and numerous individual awards, Messi smashed Muller’s record of 67 goals in a single European season by scoring 73 times in 2011-12. He’s now by far Barcelona’s champion marksman of all-time with 279 goals to his credit in 349 senior appearances, plus another 31 in 76 games for Argentina, and last month his coach at the Nou Camp, Tito Vilanova, said “His goal-tally is spectacular. There’s no doubt about that. It takes other great players seven or eight seasons to score the amount of goals he nets in one season.” But for all the records in football, there’s more to be broken – and the next big one is up for grabs. So, with eight more games remaining in 2012, ‘King Leo’ (as he fans call him) needs just eight goals to become the world’s master marksman in a single calendar year. * Barcelona’s last six games are against Alaves (this week), then Athletic Bilbao, Benfica (CL), Real Betis, Atletico Madrid & Real Valladolid on 1st, 5th, 9th, 16th & 22nd December.

Crafts of all types were demonstrated at a recent craft fayre at Café Golf in San Javier. The star of the show was definitely a beautifully hand-made dolly called ‘Jenny Penny’. She was the creation of Lyn Homer, who donated her to be raffled for MABS Cancer Support Group in Murcia. Jenny Penny can be seen at the MABS Cancer Centre in San Javier, where tickets are still being sold. If you’re not lucky enough to win this version, Lyn is happy to take commissions to make a dolly to order, so please enquire at the MABS Cancer Centre. Other crafts being demonstrated were scrapbooking, where beautiful albums can be made for special occasions, mosaic plaques and patch working. Shirley donated her hand-craft cards to be sold for MABS and there was a water colour painting demonstration. Hand-made jewellery was also on sale. The fayre raised 112€, with the proceeds of the raffle to follow. MABS fundraiser, Janet Bell, who helped organise the event, thanked Nike and Neil of Café Golf for hosting the fayre for MABS Murcia. Will also be starting Operational Kilo at Consum supermarket at Camposol B where you can give an item of nonperishable food to us . All the food donated will be passed on Cruz Roja en Mazarron to help in their support of the families of the Mazarron area. Ingredients: Serves 4 - 6 25g/1oz butter 1 tsp chopped onion 400g (14 oz) canned sweet corn, drained 1 bay leaf 2 peppercorns 1 pint (600 ml) stock 1 tablespoon corn flour ½ pint/300 ml milk salt & pepper

1. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the onion, sweetcorn, bay leaf and peppercorns. 2. C ook gently for 5 minutes, then stir in the stock. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 25 minutes. 3. R emove the bay leaf and peppercorns and sieve the soup. 4. Return it to the saucepan. 5. Dissolve the cornflour in the milk and add to the pan with salt and pepper. 6. B ring to the boil, stirring, and simmer for 8 to 12 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a flameproof casserole large enough to hold all the mussels, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat. Add the remaining onion and bell pepper. Cook, stirring often, for 3 minutes or until softened. Add the remaining 1/2 cup wine, saffron, salt, and black pepper. My name is Raya, when the good people at MARA found me I was very sick, I had Leishmania and my liver was poorly. The only time this show has been seen outside of Benidorm was last March when they came down for Welcome. Due to the high demand for tickets there was a lot of people disappointed so they agreed to come back and put non another show which again was a full house. The three performers put on a fantastic show with so many costume changes. A lot of the ladies present wanted to know where they got their dresses from and were very jealous of the performers legs.

had much idea what the other was talking about, but Amalia was big on hand signals! The hospital food offered made my memories of school dinners seem like banquets fit for nobility, so I fetched my purse and mentioned to her that I was going down to the shop to buy Pete something to eat. As I crossed the lobby I saw Amalia, nervously hopping from foot to tiny foot, scanning the crowd and obviously waiting for someone. In her hand she had a small scrap of paper. She saw me and homed in gratefully. ‘Can you read Spanish?’ she asked, holding out the paper. Strange, I thought, perhaps she can’t read – yet I’m sure I had seen her reading Pronto and 10 Minutos, maybe she was only looking at the pictures? She looked so anxious and the paper seemed so important to her that I took it and read it out loud, hoping that I could help. In Spanish it read: ‘I’m sorry I’ve not been nicer to you, but circumstances have overcome me. You are very kind people, I hope everything goes well for you.’ ‘I couldn’t say the words.’ She said, tears in her eyes. It’s hard hugging someone half your height, but if anyone ever deserved a hug, it was dear little Amalia, right there in the hospital lobby. I hope her neighbours are as good to her as ours are to us.

The X-asperation Factor
Every year around this time, I rattle on about one or other of those two Saturday night stalwarts – The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing. And although I had pretty much made up my mind that I would avoid those subjects this time around, I am drawn to the events of Saturday the 17th November on The X factor. Because shock horror, the two acts that the panel of judges in their infinite wisdom have deemed to be the best two vocalists in the competition, were in the bottom two sing-off with the result that the brilliant 16 year old Ella Henderson – the only female remaining in the competition – was given her marching orders. The arrogance of the judges knows no bounds, with Tulisa Contostavlos up in arms because “The public voted for the wrong people” and not for the first time banging on about it being a singing contest with the vocals the most important aspect - a
sentiment that had the other judges nodding in agreement. Tulisa, like her fellow judge and colleague Nicole Scherzinger is a stunner, but unfortunately unlike Nicole, she spoils it by speaking. But hang on, if it’s all about the vocals Tulisa, how come you used your vote to keep the multicoloured Rylan Clark in three weeks ago in the sing off between him and the vocally superior Kye Sones? This sent the vote to deadlock and it was bye bye Kye. Crucially in casting your vote, you said, “It’s not just a singing competition”. Make up your mind girl! There seems to be an organised campaign from the judges to get shot of Christopher Maloney, and even his mentor, Gary Barlow, stated on air that he hopes another one of the contestants will win. What sort of mentor is that? Louis Walsh has called Maloney a diva and says he finds him “bland and boring”, and to some he probably is. After all he is 34 years old (gasp), wears clothes that have been designed for humans and doesn’t wear a baseball cap the wrong way round. He probably will not win – sorry Chris, but you do look like a sales assistant from PC World - it’s hard to see

him on the international stage wowing the sort of audiences that whoop and holler at the likes of JLS and One Direction. But he has a great voice and there is a definite niche for him with the more mature ballad brigade. By the way Louis, when it comes to bland and boring, you could take charisma lessons from Ed Miliband. But there’s the rub, because Maloney will not bring in the millions in revenue through music sales and live performances that will most certainly come from younger, hipper and more visually appealing performers. The voice is important, but not nearly as important as the marketability of the act and that’s what The X Factor - aka Simon Cowell’s music empire – is all about. Money. Let’s face it; Christopher Maloney winning this year’s final would be a financial disaster for Cowell So let’s get it straight and see The X Factor for what it really is. On the one hand it is the promotion of Simon Cowell’s vested interests as the show’s executive producer and from ITV’s viewpoint; it is an entertainment show that is designed to pull in the viewers. And make no mistake, they will do whatever is necessary to achieve that.
Witness the spats and the seemingly bad tempered squabbles between the judges and the leaked stories of bad blood back stage – all designed to titillate the viewing audience and to provide an incentive to tune in for more of the same. Then there are the hard luck stories of the contestants themselves. How they were maltreated as kids; had lost a hamster or had been living rough on the streets. These things might be true, but they are personal and private matters and certainly have nothing whatever to do with talent. And I hate to think about the staging and production costs, all designed to hit you in the face and if anything, detract from the supposed focus of all this attention – the performers themselves. Unless the X Factor gets back on track and is genuinely there to promote the best talent, which means having judges who are unbiased and sincere and not under orders from their bosses, then it will die a death. Already viewing figures are down a massive 5 million on 2010. This may mean a different system whereby the acts are mentored by individuals who have nothing to do with the judging panel – two separate entities perhaps? The one good thing to come out of this is that Tulisa has nobody left to mentor. The bad thing is, she will still get to speak.

The use of their Remitroot Liquor to back the Raro, Alqueria’s currency had spiralled them into prominence. Rodriquez attempted to make an olive oil wine to rival the Remitroot variant. Olives however contain very little sugar. His poor quality olives had to be infused with a glucose solution. An industrial chemist from Murcia agreed to help in exchange for some compromising photographs of himself and an itinerant masseuse from Oslo. The olives were soaked in the glucose solution. Chemicals were added making the whole soluble in olive oil. The result sweet olives. These were then put into nets to give the illusion that they had just been harvested. However with such a new process there were unforeseen side-effects. The side-effects were not only unforeseen but also unpredictable. The treated olives spontaneously exploded at random intervals. Arián Pérez actually ate several of the olives mistaking them for the conventional variety. Mixed with his stomach acids they exploded simultaneously, cauterising a troublesome peptic ulcer, curing an irritable bowel and causing his hair to stand on end in the latest style. With this failure Rodriquez became a broken man. He took to eating comfort foods and soon became even more obese than usual. The only garment that fitted him was a home-made kaftan. Unfortunately when he attended village functions people thought he was the refreshment tent. He became a recluse, not washing or shaving, his hair grew long and tangled. He peered at the world as if he were a he-goat gazing up from the bottom of a cave. The discomfort of this existence soon animated him and he decided on direct action. If he couldn’t beat the Hill People and he certainly wasn’t joining them, he would usurp the legitimate government of Alqueria. A coup d’état. He enlisted the help of two sinister characters from the Canary Islands, Señores Forcan and Olam. Two of the foulest and morally vacuous individuals in the western world. Rodriquez had a lot in common with them and felt at home in their company. Rodriquez’s second in command at his olive mill, Roberto Robles made up the fourth conspirator. Whether Roberto joined this dark collaboration out of a natural sense of loyalty, plain stupidity or in the hope of financial reward is academic. The die was cast and events in Alqueria were about to take a disturbing turn for the worst. Lights burned late as the Alquerian Four plotted their dark deeds.

Amalia
We all have our own individual paths in life, some upsy-downsy, some smooth, most a mixture of both, but at one time or another we have all said, ‘I could do with a bit of excitement in my life, I’m in a rut.’ Lately there has been no chance whatsoever of us getting into a rut – in fact I have been hankering longingly for a bit of rut! However, there are upsides to every adversity if you can but find it. Help and support has been forthcoming from all sides, and I have discovered exactly how good neighbours can be, even on the 60 zillionth request for help, or at that time of night when the shoes can be heard gently snoring, and the slippers have taken up foot duties. It was during our sojourn in Torrecárdenas Hospital that I met Amalia, 80 kilos, 5 foot on tiptoes, and as sweet, kind and considerate a person as you could wish to meet. As well as ministering assiduously to her very sick husband, she took it on herself to make sure that we understood the ins and outs of 24 hour hospital survival. Well here we are at the start of another year! All right, I know it’s not January yet, but it is Advent, which is generally recognised as the start of the Church Year. For Advent means “coming” and is the time when we Christians traditionally prepare ourselves to celebrate Christmas, as we remember Jesus coming to Earth to be born in the manger in Bethlehem. But far more importantly, Advent is also the time when we remember that as a part of his teaching, Jesus often spoke of his eventual return, promising that at some future date he would come again to set up his Kingdom; so during Advent we are called upon to prepare ourselves for this event, ensuring that we are ready. And yes, I know that over the years many cranks have discredited this aspect of Christian teaching by making all manner of extravagant claims, with forecasts of doom and ‘end of the World’ scenarios. But such irrational behaviour on behalf of the few, shouldn’t prevent the rest of us from serious consideration of the very real teaching of Jesus, echoed in these words from the Creed, acknowledged, accepted and regularly recited by Christians from all branches of the Christian Church: “He ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.” So yes, in this Advent season I believe we should all take time to challenge our faith, to ensure that however little we may understand, yet we accept Jesus at his word and prepare ourselves for his unending kingdom. It’s pretty exciting stuff really, and if only we can get to grips with it, this promise makes an incredible difference to our understanding of death and the loss of those we love. And being really prepared for his kingdom can, I suggest, give a whole new meaning to the expression “Happy Christmas”.

What they think they drive!
Moving to Spain almost seven years ago I was warned that many drivers think they are Fernando Alonso; hence swerving in the opposite direction just before they turn, not overtaking until mere inches behind and then sharply pulling in front meaning the overtaken car is now breaking the good old three second rule. Then the option is either to slow down or overtake them again. Overtaking is normally fine as normally they veer off at the next junction anyway. I have been doing a lot of motorway driving recently and the other day passed the scene of a high speed accident and then minutes later another car hurtled past at 180kmh in the dark when foggy. The dangerous habit of tail-gating normally results in pile ups and when anyone sensibly leaves a good gap (hence my 3 seconds comment earlier) inevitably a couple of cars nip into the space. The peculiar British habit of being polite and letting cars out at junctions completely baffles most drivers despite flashing headlight, smiling and polite arm waving. It’s good fun to watch the incomprehension though. Now instead of changing a gas bottle on the cooker every couple of months, the gas fire is also on in the lounge and anyone with central heating will be watching the gas or heating oil levels. It makes us all much more aware of our energy usage especially having to lug gas bottles around and shelling out each time for them rather than it silently coming into the house by mains pipe and just as quietly dribbling out the bank account by direct debit. A dog is for life not just for Christmas! Words we hear every year as animal charities try and reduce the senseless trade in pets when so many lovely cats and dogs are in shelters. Small toy dogs and specialist breeds are snapped up by people often following a fashion trend. People often don’t then spend the few Euros to spay their new pets and any resulting puppies and kittens can be left for someone to find in a bin or rambla. In a hamlet where I lived the normally lovely couple that were my neighbours asked me countless times how much it was to spay their bitch and then every 7-8 months without fail the poor thing had another litter that would be there for a few days and then disappear in the night. To compound things they had given previous offspring to other neighbours who also did not spay them and so the male offspring mated with its own mother causing horrid birth defects. Is it coincidence at Christmas that prices go up in supermarkets? With so many small traders around we can all help them survive the economic downturn by popping in to see what they offer. For presents too check out the smaller shops and why not also check out charity shops and the various markets around rather than getting on the computer and ordering something from Amazon. Green Fee Services) at Bonalba Championships de San Fulgencio The opening goal arrived soon on 22nd November 2012. Two second half goals were enough to earn Monforte a well deserved win over San Fulgencio on a chilly Valencian evening. The first quarter of the match flew by with little happening, but the visitors shaded the opening exchanges without troubling the solid home backline. Monforte had the first effort at goal with a well-struck volley, but the shot was wide of the target. Marco Aurelio then forced the goalkeeper to make a smart save down to his right with the first attempt on target. The man between the sticks foiled Marco again minutes later when the Brazilian nicked the ball from the unsuspecting centreback. As the game went on the midtablers began to take control of the contest and should have opened the scoring just before the break, but when on his own the striker fluffed his lines from a few yards out and his shot trickled past the post. After a few ineffective San Fulgencio corners, the teams went to the changing rooms level. Hector Silva came close to scoring for the Saints just after the restart, but the keeper did well to tip the midfielder’s header past the post. It was end to end stuff for the first few minutes as Manuel Llopis pulled off a great save from a deflected strike,
after due to some poor marking and a mistake by Manuel Llopis. Monforte’s number 7 nodded in a well delivered corner after Manuel missed his punch. The hosts almost had another from a similar situation, but luckily for the joint leaders the header was too high to trouble the defence. With ten minutes remaining Monforte finished the game off thanks to some questionable defending from San Fulgencio. Their striker had been a menace for Claudio’s men’s defence and he got his goal ten minutes from time. A lack of communication seemed to be the problem in this case as Aaron Lopez and Joaquin Rodriguez let their man run between them before clipping the ball over Llopis to consolidate their victory. A fixture to forget for the Saints, but hopefully the loss motivates the players to get a result against C.D Dolres next Sunday! For this month’s meeting a group of 32 players visited the established course at Bonalba taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Despite a poor weather forecast the weather stayed fair and the course was in a much improved condition following their problems a few months ago. Brother and sister Adam and Lucy Stewart have returned from Loano in Italy after competing in the Down Syndrome World Swimming Championships. Adam won 3 medals, silver in the 400 meters freestyle plus a Personal Best time, silver in the 4x50 meters team relay and bronze in the 1500 meters freestyle plus a Personal Best Time. Lucy better known for her flamenco dancing with Raquel Peñas Flamenco Para Todas qualified earlier this year to swim breaststroke. This was her first major competition, and she also won silver in the 25 meter breaststroke with a Personal Best time knocking 5 seconds off her previous time,
so look out Adam. There were approx 150 athletes from 21 countries taking part from as far apart as Japan and Brazil. With the introduction of new rules and time banding there was some confusing but this will no doubt be sorted out by the next World Championships in 2 years time in Mexico. Alicante Golf Club - 221.11.12 What a change a week makes, warm sunshine, no rain, back to normal and so says everyone. After the rains of the last two weeks and the disappointment of cancelled games it was with happy hearts that the Society set out to play a Stableford at Alicante. Thanks to the kind hospitality of Alicante golf, we enjoyed coffee and toast on arrival and eagerly queued up next to the first tee to watch the tee off. The course looked good with only one or two patches of mud around and the greens freshly cut, were a joy. No stories at all to report this
week, everyone seemed happy with not a grumble in sight and as usual there are always players around to take advantage of these conditions, mainly Harry (Hi lad) Wilcock, John B (Mr Consistent) Henderson and Scot (Mr Happy) Blair. DAYA NUEVA 2 INFANTILS G10s It was a scrappy start from both sides, then on 4 minutes Danni in the Daya goal almost presented Cox with the opening goal, only last ditch defending on the goal line saved the day for the visitors. This near miss woke up Daya and they pressed forward and one attack produced a good save from the home side’s keeper. Cox were restricted to occasional breakaways one of which on 20 minutes saw Danni having to beat away a fierce shot. Soon after Daya’s Jota was called into action having to make a crucial interception. The home side were beginning to put pressure on Daya now but Jota and Francisco were rock solid at the back for the visitors. On the stroke of half time a great save from the home side’s keeper kept out a goal bound header from Manuel. So 0 - 0 at the interval with Daya having just shaded the half. The start of the second period saw Daya pile on the pressure but a quick breakaway by Cox almost caught the visitors out but somehow Daya scrambled the ball away for a corner. On 42 minutes Daya won a penalty, up stepped Manuel but his shot was brilliantly saved by the Keeper who was having an

Daya came under intense pressure themselves and the home side looked the more likely to score. From a corner Danni punched clear, the ball found its way out to Francisco, he took the ball forward beating a number of Cox defenders to put in a cross that eventually fell to Carlos who lashed it home from close range to give Daya a 1 - 0 lead on 58 minutes. Just two minutes later it was all square when Daya were caught out in defence. Back came the visitors and their lead was restored on 64 minutes when Manuel scored a good goal. So 2 - 1 Daya but it wasn’t over yet! Cox won a free kick, Danni called for the ball but never got to it, so a simple tap in gave the home side their second goal on 68 minutes to level the match. Final score 2 - 2 which was probably a fair result. If only Daya could put away their chances they would be way out in front of all their rivals. CF LORCA DEPORTIVA 0 MAZARRON FC 2 Mazarron’s march up the league table continued with a well earned 2-0 away victory at Lorca Deportiva. Despite being in command for most of the game, Mazarron had to endure a spell of intense pressure for a 15 minute spell in the second half during which goalkeeper, Jose Iker, made a number of outstanding saves to keep Mazarron in the game. Mazarron started brightly with Cecilio and Jose Ruben linking up intelligently on a number of occasions and Santi producing some defence splitting passes from midfield. One of these found Miguelon on the right but his cross was punched clear by the Lorca goalkeeper. After 17 minutes a superb chip from Jose Ruben out on the right deceived everyone but the ball rebounded to safety from the cross bar. Santi then put Ruben clear but his run was blocked by two Lorca defenders. After 30 minutes more excellent play by Cecilio saw Ruben break clear again only to see his shot blocked by the keeper. Lorca had been restricted to sporadic breakaways but could have scored two minutes before half time with a header that went just over the bar. Mazarron replied immediately with a fiercely struck shot by Cecilio which was well saved by the Lorca keeper. Alfonso and Edu replaced
Miguelon and Diego (2) at half time but it was Lorca who took the game to Mazarron in the early stages of the second half. Jose Iker made four superb saves in the space of 15 minutes before Mazarron began to take control again. Jose Ruben went close on a number of occasions and Cecilio headed wide from a Santi free kick. Poyato replaced the tiring Santi in midfield after 62 minutes and opened the scoring just ten minutes later. Ruben’s left wing run ended with an excellent ball to the far post which deceived the keeper and fell to Cecilio whose cross was headed back into the far corner of the net by Poyato to give Mazarron the lead. After 85 minutes a free kick on the right was dummied by Cecilio and Diego raced in at the far post to turn the ball home for Mazarron’s second goal and make it three wins and a draw from the last four games. This excellent result moves Mazarron up to 10th position in the league. SMGS at VISTABELLA Some of this week’s happy winners.
Around thirty members and guests from San Miguel Golf Society descended on the lovely surroundings of Vistabella for our midweek meeting. The vast majority of us had not played the course before and after completing only one or two of the interesting holes, we very soon regretted not visiting before. Only consisting of 11 holes takes little away from the experience as the first 7 holes are played twice, but from different tee-boxes each time. Being just short of 6,000 metres for the full round, the par 73 course is both picturesque and in first class condition with manicured fairways, greens and bunkers. Subtle positioning of the water hazards calls for some clever course management and the undulating, but very true, greens add a certain degree of skill requirement to the proceedings. All in all the course was certainly no push-over and the range of scores recorded by our mixed bag of golfers with varying skill levels showed that nobody burnt it up on the day! The small but friendly clubhouse was the perfect 19th hole! It was quite an unusual experience to witness such sensible prices helping to make the après-golf session a very pleasurable one. One of our better putters summed up the tricky greens when he
remarked, “The easiest shot on that course was the 4th putt!” Roger Pearson’s 20 points surprisingly won him the visitor’s prize and Ken Flaherty was the only member to win one of the three nearest the pins. The silver category’s 1, 2 & 3 were Ray Ewins (33), Tommy Boyle (25) and Norman McBride (22). The gold category’s top 3 were Ken Flaherty (33), John Drakesmith (32) and Ben Price got into 3rd spot on count-back with his 30 points. The other end of the scale was poor Jackie Marshall who didn’t have one of her best days, but at least she can drown her sorrows in this week’s bottle of fine wine as winner of the “Abacus” award. I couldn’t possibly finish one of our society reports without mentioning Barry Roehrig but this week it’s unusually not as one of the winners, it’s with good wishes from all the members for a speedy recovery from rather a painful trapped nerve…..at least it gives some others a shot at the prizes!! FC TORREVIEJA - TORRY HIT CATARROJA FOR SIX................................ Last Sunday, Torry entertained bottom of the table Catarroja, who had only 4 points to their credit this season and had lost their last 6 games. A dramatic change in fortunes from last season when they were crowned league champions at the end of the season. The match was switched from the Vicente Garcia stadium, which has been re-seeded and needs time to recover, to the Nelson Mandela stadium which has an artificial playing surface and on which the Torry squad train. Torry were looking to get back to winning ways and hopefully boost their goal tally for the season in a tightly contested league where goal difference may come into play at the end of the season. Torry were again without Rafa, who is still regaining fitness, and also Pedro Lopez who must have received an injury last week against Eldense. Burguillos replaced Pedro Lopez in central defence. Koeman was on the bench. Torrys starting lineup: Manolo, Vicente Boix, Burguillos, Jorge, Javi Rosa, Abel, Dani (Cuco Ros, 45’), Luis Carlos, Inarejos (Manu Amores, 62’), Ernesto (Koeman, 46’) and Gasch. The game started a bit scrappily but came alive on 13 minutes after a long raking pass from Abel released Luis Carlos wide on the right and he drove forward going through a
couple of tackles and cut the ball back to Ernesto who made no mistake with a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net for a GOALLLLL to Torry 1-0. Ernesto then played Inarejos in and he struck a good curling shot which was heading for the far corner until their keeper acrobatically turned it round the post for a corner. The resultant corner was not cleared decisively by the Catarroja defence and it was seized upon by Gasch, just inside the area, and he rifled the ball into the back of the net for a GOALLLLL to Torry 2-0. A few minutes later Torry won another corner and Burguillos met it with a firm header into the back of the net for another GOALLLLL to Torry 3-0 with only 23 minutes played. Luis Carlos was having an outstanding game down Torrys right turning the Catarroja fullback inside out. Inarejos had an opportunity in the 27th minute when put it the clear but was caught in two minds and instead of shooting he tried to deliver a ball across goal which went harmlessly wide of the far post. 5 minutes later a fine run from Luis Carlos and pass played Inarejos in again but he lifted his shot over the bar from an excellent position. A minute later Luis Carlos dribbled in from the right and hit a hard low shot on the turn which hit the outside of the
post with their keeper beaten. On 42 minutes after new interplay between Vicente and Gasch, Vicente cut the ball back to the edge of the box to Luis Carlos who took a touch and struck the ball fiercely into the roof of the net for a GOALLLL to Torry 4-0. The half time whistle blew and Torry were clapped off the field by their happy and appreciative supporters. With the game effectively won, Torry made a double substitution taking off Ernesto and Dani and bringing on Koeman and Cuco Ros. Torry again started on the front foot and a corner in the 49th minute was headed into the back of the net by fullback Javi Rosa for a GOALLLL to Torry 5-0. Torry then came close to a sixth goal when a good delivery into the box by Javi Rosa was met with a bullet header from Koeman which shaved the outside of the post. On 54 minutes Torry were out of sight when Luis Carlos cut the ball back for the incoming Cuco Ros to lash the ball into the back of the net for a GOALLLL to Torry 6-0 with over 30 minutes still remaining on the clock. Torry went into cruise control. Vicente had a powerful long range effort well saved by their keeper and towards the end Manolo had to make his first really serious save of the game with a splendid tip over the bar from a header from close range. The full time
whistle blew and the Torry players acknowledged their supporters and the supporters in turn acknowledged the Torry players for their performance against a youthful but poor Catarroja team. You still have to take your chances though and on this occasion Torry took most of theirs to record an emphatic win which could have been greater but who is complaining. Torry move up 6 places to 6th in the table only 2 points off 4th position with a game in hand. On Sunday they are away to La Nucia who are second in the table behind Novelda to whom they surrendered top spot and lost their unbeaten record with a 1-0 loss to a 90th minute goal last Sunday. They will be a tough nut to crack. The Torry Army have organised a coach to the game and are making a day of it with leisure time and Sunday lunch in Benidorm before going to the game. RODS AND REELS This week,s competition was the halfway point of the Winter Championship. The competition, being 11 matches with the best 8 results to count. The venue was the Embalse de Ojos or Blanca as it is better known. 16 brave anglers turned out knowing but hoping that although it was late in the year the fish would still feed. Alas, that was not the case there were still 7 blanks. The only bonus on the day was it did not rain and the next match is June 2013!!!!!. One notable angler said afterwards that this was the 3rd time of fishing there without a bite some 19.5 hours of frustration, as is this place?. CHALLENGE AWAY TO ALBACETE After two excellent games by the players and have showed a lot of improvement with the results from last season, this weekend they are away to Albacete and looking to continue the great work been done in the last two matches. Also with a little bit of good fortune, and get something out of the match. In recent weeks with quite a few new additions to the team and players who have not played before have got together a very good young squad, well at my age everyone is young. This coming weekend we will be televising all of the autumn international live rugby matches at the rugby bar in Rojales, The Steakhouse, used to be Tylers Bar, on Friday, Ospreys v Blues at 20.00, followed on Saturday with England v All Blacks at 14.30 or Wales v Australia at 15.00 and the women England v All Blacks at 16.30and finally Sunday Sarries v Gloucester at 15.30 so come along to the only designated rugby bar in the area and join the Costa Blanca Rugby Supporters Club as well. CAPTAIN’S CHARITY TROPHY Wednesday 21st November 2012 San Javier Golf Society maintained their tradition of nominating one of their regular meetings to raise funds for a local charity with a competition for the Captain’s Charity Trophy. Captain for 2012/13, Barry Beale had chosen MABS as this year’s recipient and on Wednesday 21st November 28 players met at Peraleja Golf for the event. The competition was played as a Mystery Pairs Stableford but players were left in no doubt that the main ‘winners’ on the day were going to be MABS. Janet Bell, Fund Raising Co-ordinator for MABS was on hand to see players off and there again in the afternoon to welcome them back and present the Trophy. Juan-Fran and the team at Peraleja had been most generous in their help with the event and a number of other members and guests had most graciously donated prizes for the raffle and skill events during the day. The weather was kind with warm sunshine and little wind and the course has benefitted from the recent rain which had turned everything a pleasant green. The course has suffered with some of its fairways but there are real signs that things are improving and the tees and greens cannot be faulted. However that did not seem to inspire the players with nobody breaking net par and
the overall scoring mostly leaving something to be desired – perhaps the occasion was greater than the play. The cards were paired up randomly at the end and congratulations went to Joe Flanagan & Ann Geary who lifted the trophy by 3 points from Bob Blair & Mark McGregor with John Collins & Roger McGeagh a point further back in third. Skills prizes were won by John Collins, Ann Geary, Neil Robinson and Ian Wade. In his speech Captain Barry Beale thanked all at Paraleja, the members of the Commitee who had put so much effort in to make the day a success, sponsors of prizes for their generosity and most importantly the members who had been so generous in their contributions to the pot. Janet Bell graciously accepted a cheque for €550 from the Captain and expressed her gratitude on behalf of the Charity.
BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE FOR MONTE ................................................ CD Montesinos 0 – 2 CD Murada CDM Team; Lopez, Sergio, Becker, Fernando, Geremias, Rubio, Edu, Andres, M & A, Iker and Chulo. CDM Subs: Javi on for Geremias and Omar on for Rubio We should have known it was not going to be our day after just one minute of this game. That is all it took for the Monte keeper, Lopez, to come running out of his area and clatter into his own centre half, Geremias. That left the Murada forward to simply tap into an empty net and give the visitors a first minute lead. Geremias ended up being taken to hospital in an ambulance and a lengthy stoppage occurred. From that moment onwards it was all Monte. On no less than six occasions, the home supporters thought their side had scored, but either by good goal keeping, the woodwork, poor finishing or simply bad luck, the ball simply would not go into the net. It was all one way traffic which surely would bring a goal for the home side. But alas, despite all their chances, Montesinos went in
0-1 down at the break to a very resolute and no nonsense CD Murada side. The second half was much the same as the first. Montesinos pushing forward at every opportunity, and the visitors doing a good job of keeping them at bay. With the minutes slipping away and Montesinos pushing more and more people forward in a desperate attempt at snatching something from this game, Murada broke away and scored their second goal (with their first real shot on target in the whole game). It was a well taken goal and to be honest, with 10 minutes still to play you really could see no way back for Monte, which is exactly what happened. A bad day all round for the home side who now have to travel to Benejuzar this coming weekend.
