Investors from abroad who offer jobs in Spain will get automatic residence rights Foreign investors who could potentially create jobs in Spain may be given automatic residence rights and visas in a new move by the central government to encourage multi-national firms to set up branches in the country. According to a report by ThinkSpain, companies or individuals who bring a ‘notable socio-economic impact’ or ‘important scientific or technological innovation’ into Spain will find the paper-trail required to obtain residence will be considerably simplified. Where these people, or the owners and existing key staff of the firms in question are self-employed and involved in more than one area of activity, they will be given a discount on their monthly social security contributions. They will need to provide evidence that they intend to make ‘significant financial investments’ in Spain and ‘create jobs’ in order to benefit from an easier residence process. The new law allowing for this is hoped to make Spain a more attractive place for highly-qualified professionals and scientific investigators by cutting down on the red tape required for settling in

the country. Employment minister Fátima Báñez says the legislation will benefit at least a million young people currently out of work, and companies which make a concerted effort to invest in Spain will be given incentives and official recognition. Iberdrola has been named as one of the companies which is already doing so. As well as trying to attract top-flight professionals and the best scientists to the country, Báñez says firms which give ‘training contracts’ – apprenticeships or positions with on-the-job training – will be given discounts on taxes and other duties as an incentive. But in the meantime, recent research has shown that only 20 per cent of young Spaniards who are currently working abroad in the field of science and investigation intend to return home one day – the remaining 80 per cent have already ruled this out. And the 20 per cent who wish to come back to Spain say they have no idea when they may be able to do so, given the lack of opportunities in their profession in the country.

Madrid Police Catch 59 People Siphoning Water Off The Mains Without Paying Guardia Civil officers in Madrid have detected 67 illegal connections to the mains water network allowing those who set them up to have on-tap water without paying. They have arrested 59 people who are said to have ‘stolen’ 286,000 cubic metres of drinking water – the average household consumes approximately 40 cubic metres a month, meaning the total amount siphoned illegally was enough to supply each of the accused parties for an average of 10 years. Many of those thought to have been ‘stealing’ water are owners of companies, which habitually consume more, so police do not believe the situation has been going on for more than a few months. Over a kilometre of unauthorised pipes tapping into the mains supply was found following extensive investigations that involved geo-radar robotic equipment. As well as being fraudulent, the illegal connections

could have caused serious structural damage to the mains, police say.

This may have led to a fall in water pressure for other

consumers, massive leaks, and water pockets forming underground and putting the foundations of buildings in jeopardy.

Confusing new Coastal Plan in Andalucía The plan bans around 90,000 properties, less than half of those scheduled for development

The new Costal Plan in Andalucía is set to ban 90,000 homes, less than half of the total projects which are planned to be built closer to the waterline than 500m. The current plans in coastal Town Halls are to construct 182,422 homes in an area 500 metres from the shore, but it seems that those properties that slip over the boundary are safe because they are on building land approved more than 10 years ago. Of the 859 kilometres of Andalucía Coastline, only 36 are protected. Of the 62 coastal Town Halls, only 9 have made the POTA plan, which came into effect with the LOUA, the Law of Urban Ordination, ten years ago. The plan now is to define what is and what is not buildable, and to build on empty buildable land. REPORT BY Howard Brereton, www.typicallyspanish.com

Madrid Was The World’s Coldest Capital City On Friday At 9.2ºc

Madrid was the coldest capital city in the world on Friday 17th May. With maximum daytime temperatures of 9.2ºC, it was chillier than every other capital city in the northern and southern hemisphere that day. And the humidity levels registered meant that it felt much colder than 9.2ºC, according to weather records. Even Moscow reached maximum temperatures of 25ºC, and the second-coldest capital in Europe – Brussels – had highs of 9.7ºC, or 0.5ºC warmer than Madrid. La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, was the third-chilliest capital in the world at 10ºC. Even in the southern hemisphere, where winter is fast approaching, temperatures were higher than in Madrid – Buenos Aires was

the coldest capital in South America (which officially starts at the México-Guatemala border) at 15.5ºC and Canberra (Australia) registered highs of 14.6ºC. The record for Madrid is not only that of the coldest capital city in the world on May 17, but also the lowest maximum temperatures on record for the month of May. Mountainous regions in Spain are still snow-covered and even some ski resorts remain open. And it is not expected to get much warmer for the rest of the month – the highest temperatures predicted in Madrid between now and the end of May will be around 20ºC, and more rain is on the cards.

Ex-Chief Executive Officer of the Caja Madrid bank, Miguel Blesa is behind bars due to alleged ‘illegalities’ in his purchase of City National Bank of Florida, in the USA. He was unable to find the 2.5-million-euro bailrelease required by judge Elpidio José Silva to keep him out of jail, so is being held in custody at Madrid’s Soto del Real prison. According to a report by ThinkSpain, Silva calls it ‘appalling’ to have bought the Florida-based bank ‘right in the middle of the economic tsunami’ Spain is currently suffering and considers that the decision to do so may have caused the collapse of the financial entity. A report dated April 2010 shows that the purchase price ‘exceeded’ those paid by Spanish firms Banco Popular and Banco Sabadell when they bought other banks based in Miami, and that the Office of the Controller of the Currency (OCC), which supervises the financial system in the USA, had warned of ‘extremely relevant deficits in the supervision of the board of directors’ of City National Bank of Florida when considering the general economic instability, and with no viable business strategy in place’. The OCC considered the City National Bank of Florida had a ‘high and growing strategic risk’ attaching to it.

In the meantime, the Bank of Spain claimed that the level of growth forecast by Caja Madrid for the period 2009 to 2014 inclusive had been inflated. The accusation against Blesa claims there was ‘an absence of even the least credible analysis of acceptable risk’; a ‘clearly insufficient study of the market cornered’, and the payment of ‘an inflated price’ with an ‘absence of any of the requisite administrative checks’. It refers to ‘deliberate ignorance’ on the part of people with ‘vast experience, at expert level, of banking operations’. Caja Madrid acquired 83 per cent of City National Bank of Florida, the sixth-largest private bank in the state of Florida, for 927 million dollars, and the remainder in 2010 for a further 190 million dollars. Anti-corruption campaign association Manos Limpias (‘Clean Hands’) says the judge’s decision to jail Blesa was ‘objective, independent, considered and exemplary’, and that he was in possession of ‘sufficient evidence’ to show that the purchase of the Florida bank was harmful to Caja Madrid. The group adds that the decision turned Caja Madrid into ‘a type of haven from which the CEO and his board of directors handed out credits amongst themselves freely and without any kind of guarantee’.

MEPs Question Spain’s Use of EU Grants for Bull-fighting

Four Spanish MEPs say they believe their country is using EU agriculture grants on promoting and televising bull-fighting, and have called for an investigation and possible sanctions. According to press reports, Alfred Bosch, Ana Miranda, Raúl Romeva and Ramón Tremosa say these grants are not even used on the actual breeding of bulls, but on filming, entry tickets, repairing and decorating bull-rings, advertising, TV rights, and benefits for promoters of and companies in the bull-fighting industry. Spain receives around 130 million in agricultural grants for bull-breeding, which would translate to 240 euros per hectare of land used for the purpose. The MEPs say the bull-fighting industry would be ‘on the edge of bankruptcy’ if it were not for this money. They have called for ‘greater transparency’ from EU member States as to what they spend their grants on. Additionally, they have called for the EU to stop giving grants to any bull-related activities and for member States to be fined for using agricultural funding for ‘inefficient’ economic sectors such as ‘breeding bulls for a questionable form of entertainment’.

New mortgage and repossession law approved

JUDGES can now prevent mortgage lenders from repossessing properties where ‘abusive’ clauses are included in the loan contract, and grant a two-year stay of grace on repossession for homeowners considered to be ‘especially vulnerable’. The new mortgage and repossession law – which came into force yesterday (Wednesday) after being approved in Parliament a week previously – limits interest rate hikes on repayments made as a penalty for defaulting on a monthly quota, and also forces banks to set a minimum reserve when auctioning off properties they have already taken back from their owners. Certain mortgage contracts include a minimum auction reserve, or subasta clause, which is fairly close to the amount of the loan, whereas others give a much lower reserve or none at all. The latter scenario has meant until now that a lender can auction a property for just one euro, meaning the defaulting owner remains liable for the full amount

of the debt, including administration and legal fees plus interest. But the more a repossessed property fetches when the bank auctions it, the less the debt the homeowner is left with. Those facing repossession who are considered ‘vulnerable’ and automatically permitted a two-year moratorium include single parents with two dependent children or with one child under three or one or more disabled children, large families with three or more children, parents with at least one disabled child who needs their constant care, victims of domestic violence,

or homeowners who are unemployed and whose dole money has run out. In these cases, the maximum family income cannot be more than 1,595.53 euros a month, which is three times the minimum wage. The mortgage law allows for reduction of the outstanding debt through waivers where the property has already been repossessed and sold to a third party, and allows for the creation of ‘council housing’ at a very low rent ranging between 150 and 400 euros a month but capped at 30 per cent of the tenant’s income. Eligible tenants must have been evicted from their

wiping out the debt in its entirety, despite clamouring from nationwide pressure groups, this has not been included as an automatic legal right on the part of the homeowner, but is ‘strongly recommended’ within the mortgage lenders’ Code of Good Practice. This Code has now been made law. In reality, as a result of the Code of Good Practice, a

total of 298 homeowners have been able to return their house keys to the bank in order to cancel the mortgage debt completely. The change in the law – which is still based upon the original text of February 1946 – was in response to widespread protests and to what has been described as ‘a need for emergency measures’ given Spain’s current economic climate.

Warm climate Most of us dream of retiring someplace warm. Snow and cold are things we gladly leave behind with our old 9-to-5 lives. And when the weather is warm and sunny, it’s easy to spend more

Agreement Reached In Refuse Council Comes Collectors Pay Dispute Under Fire Over Beach Rubbish Bins

With just over a week to go before the official start of the summer season on 1st June, the ruling council Popular Party has come under fire over rubbish bins. Never shy to stir things up at the most opportune moments, the main opposition PSOE party launched a scathing attack on the mayors newly introduced beach improvement plan.

Socialist councillor Ana Zapata, in an address to the council chamber on Wednesday, criticised the councils inaction on a number of issues. The lack of enough rubbish bins has been a major contention from her party for a number of years. She maintained the existing bins are old and not located in the right places, saying, “With the exception of a small stretch of beach near the Club Nautico, our beaches in Roquetas are very deep, so people have to walk a long way to find one. Too often, people cannot be bothered and just leave their rubbish on the sand.” She said the council still have time to address what she called ‘a disgraceful’ situation regarding the bins and new ones could be in place within a week. Next on her list of criticisms was, in the opinion of her party, the very poor access routes to the beaches. She acknowledged the council had improved access for disabled people, but considered much more should be done to make it easier for people to reach all parts of the coast. As I have reported in recent weeks, the council has made huge efforts this year to continue to improve all aspects of the beaches, which they describe as being, ‘Significantly the most important reason holiday makers choose to visit our town.’ They have invested in new machinery, extra staff and training and in conjunction with the tourist board, have introduced a number of promotions to attract more visitors to the town. With the first holiday makers soon to arrive, hotels, bars and restaurants will all be hoping this is a bumper season.

The principles of an agreement was reached at a meeting last week, thus averting the possibility of a strike by the refuse workers of Roquetas. Leaders of the contract collection company Urbaser, council representatives and union officials spent three hours drawing up the agreement, which has been welcomed by all parties. The threat of strike action has been hanging over the businesses and residents of the municipality for the best part of this year. The original plan was for the strike to take place during the Easter holiday; business and community leaders held emergency meetings with the council, urging them to arbitrate between the two sides. The employees finally agreed - in an eleventh hour decision - to postpone the strike; they didn’t want to be seen as the cause of what would have been a disaster for the town, during one of the busiest holiday periods of the year. The strike action had originally been called after the CSIF union and Urbaser failed to agree on changes to a new working practises and wage structure Urbaser had tried to introduce. In it, employees hours would be cut, bringing about an average loss of around 3,000 euros per person. Holiday and pension entitlements would also have been affected. The council subsequently held talks with both union and management representatives, the outcome of which was

last Thursdays announcement. Both sides have agreed to a wage freeze for the next three years and there will be no changes to holidays and pensions. Juan Fernandez, vicepresident of the CSIF union said after the meeting, “What we have now is a period of respite for the workers and management of the company. It’s also important for the residents of the town, as the shadow of the strike has now been removed.” He explained the agreement was virtually secure, saying, “All that remains is to tidy up a few points, it’s a case of merely crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s.” They plan to resume talks in two years time, to explore a wage increase and renegotiate the holiday and pension terms. A spokesman for Urbaser said they were pleased with the outcome and that they could now concentrate on getting back to the important task of ensuring the town receives the highest level of commitment from the company. A representative from the mayors office said how happy the council was at the way the talks had gone, saying, “This is the best possible outcome for all concerned – employees, management and residents - and we are delighted a strike has been avoided.” The final seal on the agreement will come this week, when employees are expected to unanimously vote in favour of the new proposal.

Costa Almeria Ambassadors On Promotion Visit To London

Members of the Almeria Tourist Board visited London last week to promote the regions tourist attractions, but in a slightly different way. As well as the usual round of meetings with tour operators, travel agents and city dignitaries, they called on the help of Spanish people living in the capitol to aid their promotional campaign. The idea came from Javier Garcia, the president of the Tourist Board in Almeria. The campaign was called ‘Almeria Ambassadors’ and former residents of the town were contacted through social media sights, asking them to assist in the campaign. Over 200 people – many from Almeria - turned up on the day at Potters Field, right next to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. As well as talks about the region, they were shown

promotional videos and received promotional packs including tee shirts, advertising leaflets and posters, which they will be distributing to outlets throughout the capitol over the coming weeks. Javier Garcia said, “This is a really good way of reaching more people with our promotion of the region of Almeria. If each one of these people here today gives out 20 – 30 copies of our publicity, then we will have reached more than 5,000 potential new visitors to our beautiful region of Spain.” The day was a great success, not only for the tourist board officials, receiving interest from UK television and radio stations, but also for the hundreds of Spanish residents who turned up to help. It was clear a lot of new friendships were made and at the end of the day, in typical Spanish style, the party continued late into the night.

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREAT

World War II FOOD ADVICE could be the key to improving diets today

It is 70 years since the Ministry of Food’s leaflets taught Britons to eat well on rations and stay ‘fit for the fight’ during the Second World War. But much of the long-forgotten dietary advice still stands and, says a leading nutritionist, could help improve our diet today. A new book, Eating For Victory, reproduces the leaflets distributed along with posters in the 1940s. Here is some of the advice as it was printed. It’s accompanied by wartime illustrations – with a modern interpretation of the old wisdom...

POTATOES There is no vegetable more useful than the homely potato. It is a valuable yet cheap source of energy, and one of the foods that help to protect us from ill-health. It contains Vitamin C and 1lb of potatoes daily will give half the amount of this vitamin needed to prevent against fatigue and fight infection. So don’t think of potatoes merely as something to serve with the meat. A stuffed baked potato can be a course in itself. Bridget Benelam, a scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, says: ‘A medium-sized baked potato, with skin, provides a third of the recommended daily amount (RDA) of Vitamin C – twice that of an apple. It will also provide half the RDA of potassium – important for blood pressure and water balance – iron, zinc and B vitamins.’

CHEESE Cheese is an A1 food because it is an excellent body-builder, better than meat for building firm muscles. It builds strong bones and teeth, too. Therefore, it is invaluable for growing children. Plenty of cheese in childhood means less dental trouble in later life. It is a concentrated energy-giving food, especially suitable for heavy workers as it gives a large amount of energy in small bulk. It contains a high proportion of fat and so gives a feeling of satisfaction after a meal. Bridget says: ‘A matchbox-sized serving, 30g, of cheese provides a quarter of our daily calcium needs – crucial for maintaining bone density – although milk or yogurt might be better choices as they are lower in fat. Cheese is as good a source of protein as meat but generally contains more fat, so should be eaten less.’

HERRINGS ‘Of all the fish that swim in the sea,’ runs the old saying, ‘the herring is the king.’ Consider the herring’s food value. It is a very cheap source of the best body-building protein. Herring oil not only supplies an extraordinarily high number of calories and energy-giving units, but it also contains two vitamins, A and D. Vitamin A strengthens resistance to disease and Vitamin D is essential for bones and teeth.

kim clark benefits consultancy Do you suffer from mobility problems, breathlessness/pain or falls/stumbles?

Bridget says: ‘This is still true – herrings are an excellent source of fish oil. Research since the 1940s has shown the omega 3 in oily fish is important for good heart and brain health. We should eat two portions of fish a week, one oily. Nowadays other types of fish are readily available, such as tuna.’

DRIED EGGS Dried egg is pure fresh egg with no additions, and nothing but the moisture taken away. It is pure egg, spray-dried. Eggs contain firstclass body-building material. They also help us to resist colds and other infection because of their high protective properties. They are easily digested, and for this reason are especially good for children and invalids. Bridget says: ‘Transporting food is easy now so we generally eat only fresh eggs. Two medium eggs provide your entire RDA of B12, important for blood and brain function, and 60 per cent of our Vitamin D requirement. They are also high in protein.’

GREEN VEGETABLES When fresh fruit is short, we need green vegetables more than ever because they all contain the important fresh-fruit vitamin, Vitamin C. Some have more than others. Brussels sprouts, parsley and watercress all contain more than oranges. For healthy eating, plan to have a green leafy vegetable at least once every day. Bridget says: ‘This all holds true – vegetables can have just as much Vitamin C as fruit. In fact, a pepper contains double the Vitamin C of an orange and will provide your entire daily requirement. Dark green leaves are an important source of antioxidants, which protect cells from a host of diseases from cancer to age-related sight loss.’ read the full article at www.dailymail.co.uk

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com

Q: Please explain the situations in which a resident qualifies for non-payment of capital gains tax.

A . The first thing is to be able to prove to the notary the day of the sale that you are in fact a Spanish tax resident. It is very important to realize that having what everyone calls the “residencia” issued by the police does not in fact prove you are a tax resident of Spain , and that if this is the only document you take to the notary to prove tax residency , the notary will consider you a non resident and you will be subject to a 3% retention. To prove you are a tax resident your solicitor needs to request a certificate from the tax authorities, which can then be taken to the notary. If you suffer the nasty surprise of them saying that in fact you are a non resident, you will need to get this amended by proving to them that you are in fact a resident before they will issue you with the correct certificate for the notary. The best way to secure tax residency status is making a resident income tax declaration in Spain in June of every year. If you are going to sell shortly, request this certificate in advance to avoid last minute surprises. 1. The possible total or partial exemption from capital gains tax due to reinvestment (roll-over ): If you are a resident and sell one property to purchase another of the same or higher price you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax. To benefit you have to have been a resident for at least 3 year before the sale takes place, and you must purchase the next property within 2 years of the sale. If you are moving to a smaller property, you can claim exemption of a percentage of the capital gains tax. 2. Claim of total exemption if you are over 65 years old: If you are over 65 and sell your main home (where you must have lived for at least 3 years as a resident), you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax even if you do not reinvest. If the property is owned by a couple and one member is over 65 and the other is not, you are allowed to claim the exemption in respect to half the price.

news update Reports & PHOTOS by Martin Shortland Six New Bikes For The Towns Cycle Cops

The local police took delivery of six new bicycles this week, to modernise its ageing existing ones and increase the number of bicycle patrols. The purchase comes after the decision was made to strengthen the patrols which have proved to be very effective in pedestrian areas, parks and promenades. The bicycle patrols were first introduced two years ago to monitor the beaches and promenades during the summer season, but due to the reorganisation of the police force, the service was abolished. Following a wave of thefts on the promenades this year, it was decided to re-introduce the patrols. They are able to get into areas which officers in cars can’t reach, reinforcing the police presence in these places. Six officers have been assigned to the service making up three patrols, working two shifts across the day. A police spokesman said the patrols were not only valuable in preventing crime, they were also useful in an informative role, helping the large number of tourists who visit the town every summer. He added that although bike patrols are common in large cities, Roquetas is a pioneer in the province of Almeria. As well as the new bicycles, the police will soon be replacing their entire fleet of cars, somewhat outdated now after ten years service. The cars are on order along with two motorcycles which will be used by the traffic unit.

New Bar Owners Shock Discovery

There’s A Ghost In The House!

When Rafael and Maria Lopez took over their new bar in the port of Roquetas back in March, they had a lot of work to do before they could open in May. It had been closed for almost two years and was in desperate need of a complete overhaul. It’s situated opposite the Club Nautico near the Romanilla beach and has been – under various owners – a bar/restaurant for more than thirty years. The whole family set to and worked long hours to paint, clean and fumigate the property in readiness for the grand opening. It’s a character bar and almost has the feel of an old sailing ship, with low wooden beams and wall panelling, along with shuttered windows and brass lanterns. They ran a beach bar near Aguadulce for many years, before taking up this new exciting venture in Roquetas. The newly named Meson Los Piratas offers a good selection of daily cooked food prepared by Rafa, while Maria and their daughter Vero serve in the bar and terrace. Rafa loves cooking food with strong flavours; slow cooked dishes such as oxtail, rabbit, chicken and tuna, all with bold seasoning and herbs. He recently prepared a suckling pig for a small party, which can be preordered for a special occasion. He buys his fish straight from the quay in the port and rather than having a huge list of mainly frozen produce, he prefers to buy small amounts on a daily basis, so his taps and menu selection changes from day to day and is always fresh. Needless to say, the ghost is nothing more than daughter Vero having a joke on a quiet night last week. But when the wind blows through the shutters and the lanterns swing from the beams, to the sound of the creaking old wooden floors, you might be forgiven for thinking perhaps there is something slightly spooky about this old bar in the port of Roquetas.

Melilla border fence stampede sees African migrants slip through the net

A human ‘avalanche’ of over 100 subSaharan Africans attempted to scale the border fence between Morocco and Spain at around 04.00hrs yesterday morning in order to enter Europe via the ‘back door’. Although several Guardia Civil officers were on duty and intervened, at least five of the would-be migrants managed to climb the six-metre-high double chain-link fencing and, braving the barbed wire at the top, got into Spanish territory. Officers say the Africans were all men, and that police on either side of the fence had to spring into action to stop them getting through. The border fence around the city-state of Melilla, a Spanish-owned enclave on the northern Moroccan coast, is a

frequent point of entry into Europe for illegal immigrants, who invariably attempt to storm the frontier in groups of 100 or so in order to overwhelm the police. Last time a flood of sub-Saharan Africans tried to climb the Melilla fence, just a week ago, around 70 of around 200 managed to get through. They tend to aim for the area known as the Nano River since, due to the gradient of the land, they can scale the fence with fewer problems. Helicopters and powerful lighting systems keep the border fence under vigilance night and day, particularly in the early hours of the morning when most of the African immigrants converge on the frontier.

Congress on Friday approved the reform of the controversial 1988 Ley de Costas, Coastal Law. Under the new law those who own property very close to the coastline can remain there for another 75 years. The coastal protection zone will reduce from 100 metres to 20 metres in some circumstances. 170 amendments were placed before this reform but it was passed with the votes of the Partido Popular and Catalan CiU. The PP has defended the text says it is ‘protection for the coastline’, and saying it will avoid cases such as the half-built hotel Agarrobico , part of which is built less than 25 metres from the beach However many non-governmental organisations have described the reform as an ‘amnesty’ and step more towards the privatisation of the Spanish coastline. In fact there are 12 areas of coastline where the law indeed gives amnesty from the regulations of the maritime public land close to the shore. Two of the areas were added by the Senate. They are Poblado Marítimo de Xilxes in Castellón, Moaña in Pontevedra, Serra Grossa in Alicante, Puerto de Santa Pola in Alicante, Empuriabrava in Girona, Playa de Aro in Gerona, Ría Punta Umbría in Huevla, Caños del Cepo and the urban centre of Isla Cristina in Huelva, and finally in Málaga the areas of Pedralego and El Palo, In Málaga the reform will save some 500 fisherman’s cottages along the old N340 road which were facing demolition. Across Andalucía as a whole 4,604 houses will be saved, with 863 chiringuitos and 109 hotels. The Government delegate for Andalucía said the new reform avoids the ‘barbarities’ of the previous law. Some expat property owners will benefit from the reform, which clears the confusion about possible demolition under the 1988 law. Article: TypicallySpanish.com

I was rummaging through the drawer the other day trying to find a battery for the remote control and two thoughts struck me. The first was how amazing it is that inanimate objects manage to burrow away in the most inaccessible corner of the deepest drawer you have and cunningly hide themselves from your search, not once, but every time you look for them. My second thought was, why on earth have we got a dog whistle? I’ve got nothing against dogs-or for that matter dog whistles-but the thing is, I’m allergic to them. I sneeze, snuffle and generally do allergy related things in their company. So, I couldn’t offer any explanation for being in possession of a dog whistle, except to say, it must have been a fantastic piece of advertising that persuaded either me or Helen to part with real money to buy a thing we could never use. Then that got me thinking about all those things we own that could never be satisfactorily explained away, even under fierce interrogation. I think everyone’s had those moments when we’ve been convinced that our lives would be so much better if we bought that amazing gadget that can both stone an olive and render your front wall! Why are we such easy prey? Why do we shuffle away from our television sets after the commercial break, muttering to ourselves like a demented Dalek, “I must buy it…I must buy it,” as we trundle towards the nearest shop with a determined expression in our eyes and a lust for… well for whatever we’ve just seen? Of course, if we knew the answer we’d all be high flying advertising executives, earning a fortune and laughing up our sleeves! Actually one of my most embarrassing shopping moments came after watching Top of the Pops and being persuaded that

I just had to buy that record. The next day after school I went to the record shop-small round things with a hole in the middle-and asked Graham is married to Helen and has the lady if she had “That Same Old a daughter, Alice. Feeling”, by Pickettywitch. “No love, He lives part of the year near Albox, “ she replied, “not for a long time!”. but works in Qatar, I bet that never happened to Tony teaching. If you wish Blackburn. to contact Graham regarding this Wait, I’ve had an idea. I’ve finally article email: found a use for it. I’m going home helenandg@yahoo. to do a Pickettywitch medley on my co.uk dog whistle. Now all I have to do is work out why I bought this Octopus food...

RACE NIGHT for MACS AT Beccy’s Bar La Union

Beccy’s Bar La Union run by Lesley and Graham held a Race Night on Saturday 18th May to raise funds for MACS (Mojacar Area Cancer Support Group). MACS is supporting people in the Albox area. The evening was organised by the Bar La Union Quiz Master, Chris Fogarty. 8 Races were held in all along with a raffle with prizes donated by La Bar Union, CAT Services, Sophia’s Arboleas and Studio 97 The most unusual way to raise money was by three ladies Gill, Sue and Joan, acting as a human fruit machine, a big thank you to those who took part. The volunteers, friends and partners from MACS shop Albox also supported the activities. The generosity of those present was outstanding in giving money to this very worthy cause. The owners of the Bar treated all who attended with sausage rolls and quiche at the end of the evening. Chris said he would be holding a similar event later in the year. Chris also runs a quiz at the venue every Thursday Night. The total raised for the evening was 386.50 euros. THANK YOUFOR A GREAT NIGHT OUT. MACS have two shops with more on the way, Albox and Turre and a 3rd shop which opens in Mojacar on June 1st. for further information about MACS and how it supports your community, please visit www.macscancersupport.com. A MACS fundraising team is being set up in your area. Have you just a few hours each month to help out with new ideas on how to fundraise for MACS in your area? If you have some spare time and wish to support MACS please email MACS Fundraiser on macs_fundraiser@ hotmail.co.uk or call Wayne Claridge on 672 640 905.

F.A.C.E. Ouiz Night Raises Over 600€!

F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) held it’s first ever Quiz Night at the Bar Kubatin, underneath the Hostel Meson in Arboleas. Thirty teams of up to four people entered the Quiz Night. The four rounds of the Quiz were sponsored by the Amigo’s Bowling Alley, Essentials of Arboleas, Sol Supermercado of Albox and The Sol Yoga Centre in La Cinta. The night was further enhanced by the fact that two of the F.A.C.E. Committee Members, Pauline Marshal & Vice President Carrie Green were celebrating their Birthdays as was Shelly Ellul, one of the team members. In addition to the quiz there was also a raffle held which was made up of 16 prizes that had been donated by either local businesses or by Members of the public. Throughout the evening over 40 questions were asked by quiz and quizziters Maureen and Gary Bolton. A total of over 638 € was raised by the event. A further 50 € was donated by the owners of the Bar Kubatin. The Winning Team was a group called Enigma and was made up of friends Ann, Mick, Ian and Mike who scored 54 points. The Team which won the wooden spoon was Eleanor and Gilly’s Monday Afternoon Line Dance Class made up of Eleanor Tolman, Pat & Terry Steele and Pat Perrin. They were presented with F.A.C.E. Sponsored Base Ball Caps. Money raised by F.A.C.E. Is used to support organisations such as MACS (Mojacar Area Cancer Support, Age Concern España, the AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cancer) and ALCER a Spanish association who give assistance to people suffering from renal illnesses. In addition to these, on a more local basis, F.A.C.E. Has also supported the schools in both El Prado and Arboleas and Grupo Scout 106 Del Saliente in Albox. The next event that F.A.C.E. Will be organising will be a Book Sale which will be held outside the F.A.C.E. Office in Arboleas on the 15th June.

Almanzora Charitable Theatre

Performances will take place on the 7th. 8th. and 9th. of June in Bar Parrilla, Albox and the programme is made up of 2 one-act plays which could perhaps be described as 2 utter debacles. The first, “Costa del Packet” centres around a group of 4 ladies who have booked a holiday at a four star luxury hotel in Mallorca. Unfortunately, their dream of a wonderfully relaxing time in the sun is punctured when they discover that the accommodation on offer is somewhat less salubrious than they had anticipated. The second play, “Strictly Sex Factor ( on Ice )” revolves around the ‘Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society” who are extremely grim to say the least. In their hey-day their audiences hardly ever reached double figures! However, their bombastic, pompous chairman has devised a plan to compete head-on with the TV reality shows that he believes have ravaged their Saturday night audiences. The evening’s entertainment includes a 3 course meal and the proceeds will be domated to MACS.

SOLTIMES MAY 2013

...FOOD NEWS...FOOD NEWS... Are cronuts the new cupcakes?

The cronut, which has already received interest from curious pastry chefs in Hong Kong, Melbourne, and Los Angeles, is made from thin layers of flaky croissant dough that are deep fried, rolled in rose sugar, and then filled with light Tahitian vanilla cream. Rose-flavored glaze thinly coats the top layer, which peels apart like those in a mille crepe cake; finally, crystallized rose petals add a garnish flourish. With a line 30-people deep before Dominique Ansel opened its doors this morning, it’s easy to see why the Manhattan bakery’s new invention, cronuts, are selling within an hour. The cronut half croissant, half donut - was quietly unveiled last Friday, with a small batch of 50. Three days later, when 200 had sold out by 9.30am, one angry and disappointed customer ‘flipped the finger’ at staff on his way out of the pâtisserie. ‘A lot of people ask me why we don’t just do more?’ the bakery’s owner and chef, Dominique Ansel, told reporters. ‘I’m a big fan of quality over quantity. . . It takes a lot to ensure all our other pastries are up to par with standards as well.’ The bakery, which opened in New York’s Soho in 2011, makes the cronut dough fresh daily in house, as well as the flavored sugars and vanilla ganache. ‘That’s why the batches are limited. Hopefully people will bear with us as we try to ramp up production,’ the chef explained. With such a swift reaction to the new pastry,

Mr Ansel has filed a trademark for the cronut, ‘just for our protection,’ he said. It took around ten recipes, and multiple time and temperature adjustments before Mr Ansel found ‘the trick’ to sheeting and frying the dough in grape-seed oil at one specific, and secret, temperature. For the month of May, Dominique Ansel bakery is selling a Rose Tahitian Vanilla cronut. In June, the store will launch a new flavor: Lemon Maple. And a new flavor every month after that. A quick quote from the Chef: ‘A few tips on how to eat the cronut. Please cut (if you must) with a serrated knife to avoid crushing the layers. Do not eat the next day, eat immediately (they have a six hour shelf life) and will get stale in the fridge. Finally, try peeling off the layers one by one like a mille crepe cake.’ WHAT DOES A CRONUT TASTE LIKE?

‘Flakey but chewy, a little heavier than a croissant but fluffier than a donut’ ‘The soft crunch was followed by an injection of cream and a whiff of a rose garden – thanks to the floral-infused icing. The perfect breakfast sandwich!’ ‘There’s an element of the éclair about it, with the vanilla cream inside, which isn’t too sweet, allowing the rose icing to provide the sugar hit alone. They are insanely addictive – mine disappeared in microseconds. I could have devoured the box.’ Let’s hope they arrive sometime soon in Spain...

The gentle puppy with the heartbreaking look

This is Kinara, a 5 month old mini Podenco mix. She has total paralysis in one hind leg and just a minimum of movement in the other. Kinara is a gentle puppy with a heartbreaking look combined with an incredible will to live. If you meet her you will find it impossible to remain unmoved. A young couple tried to bring Kinara to the dog shelter. She was already paralysed but had to be turned away because she was from the wrong area. This is contrary to the local Council’s agreement with the shelter. The couple then abandoned her, next to a garbage container close to the shelter. Voluntary workers have now made her a roller so that she has some freedom of movement, but the shelter is not the right place fore her. The shelter is making a desperate plea to you for funds so that she can be thoroughly examined with a scanner. After her scan she will need treatment to improve her condition. The scan is not available in Almeria, but indications from a clinic near Alicante are that the scan will cost approximately 600 Euros. After Kinara has had her scan there will of course be

further costs involved, for her treatment. The shelter hopes that with the help of generous contributions from the readers of The Sol Times, all of this can be achieved. When the treatment has been completed she will need a loving and caring new home where she can safely frolic, and receive personal attention. This sort of attention is not possible at the shelter where a small band of voluntary workers work tirelessly to support more than 400 dogs. Personal attention at the shelter is just not an option. Can YOU help with a small donation? Every little will help to save this lovely brave animal and give her a worthwhile life. If you want to help Kinara you can send a donation directly to the bank account of The SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR. If you want details of the Shelter’s Bank Account, please send an email to Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail. com and he will reply to you straight away. Alternatively you can visit the shelter yourself to meet Kinara. You can link to Kinara’s album in DROPBOX at https://www.dropbox. com/sh/gu6n9f2m08h3ywh/GWFNHLREDk

ROQUETAS DE MAR A GRAND DAY OUT!

Happy 60th Birthday

Colin

from all your friends in Roquetas

Rita and Ray from Santa Cruz recently invited the Friday Tapas Group up to their ‘Cortijo’ for a BBQ in the hills. Everyone joined in and prepared food for the event and a good time was had by all in the sunshine, as can be seen in the two photographs, one of the ladies and one of the men folk, including a couple of holidaymakers from Manchester! Monday 13th May was the day the group travelled to Santa Cruz, which is a lovely little village just inside the Sierra de Gador/ Sierra Nevada, and situated close to the Rio Nacimiento on a quiet country road leading towards the A92 Motorway. Well worth a drive in the country and only about fifty minutes from Roquetas De Mar! The group also called in at a Pottery in Alhabia, a village close to Santa Cruz, at Ceramica Artesana ‘Gonzalez Castellon’, who are open daily to the general public, so why not pop in and get a ganga (bargain)!

SOLTIMES MAY 2013

Question: How many people does it take to change a motorcar tyre? Answer: 8 – Jos, Pete, Greg, Chris, Lauren, Wayne, Gerald, and most of all, Andy! Here’s why: Pete’s niece, Chris, her husband Greg and their daughter Lauren were here for a flying visit. In the cold grey Limaria dusk, on the evening previous to their departure in the cold grey light of the next Limaria dawn, I noticed that their hire car had 3 round tyres and one which was round on top and flat at the bottom. Action had to be taken and the wheel had to be changed, and changed now –the situation was not going to magically right itself overnight. Greg, as Alpha Male, was called. He rose unsteadily from his sick bed, (he had the dreaded tummy virus) and promptly sank back again, going a greener shade of pale as he did so. I hold that Woman was not put on this earth to change tyres, but on this occasion Woman had no option, so between us Chris and I wrangled the spare tyre out of its cubbyhole, while Lauren, who has the most recent experience of theoretical car josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk motor

maintenance, held things and offered encouragement. While I swore at the wheelnut covers, Chris attacked them with a screwdriver. They quickly recognised the futility of resistance and popped off. Pete, hearing the commotion and bad language, limped out from within the house and assumed command of his ersatz harem from his chair on the porch. ‘Put the spanner on the wheelnuts, then jump on it.’ He commanded, seeing me vainly struggling to dislodge them. That worked rather more quickly than I had expected! ‘Now get Gerald’s kneeler-upon, and Wayne’s plank.’ Pete commanded. ‘Why?’ ‘To prevent your knees and the jack from sinking into the gravel.’ Why hadn’t that dawned on me? Blessing Gerald for the millionth time for the gift of the kneeler-upon, I knelt upon it and carefully positioned Wayne’s plank under the jacking point. At this point the Biggs personal one man emergency service, AKA Andy, arrived on the scene, turned the plank through 90%, so that it was the right way round to support the jack, and took over the remainder of the task. We women were then free to revert to our proper role, that of offering encouragement and forming an admiring audience. With the co-operation of 8 people, either directly or indirectly, it is really not that difficult to change a tyre!

The Fat Little Cherub with the Bow and Arrow

Over the winter months we thought it would be a good idea to dig out all of those albums and boxes of photographs from under the stairs, and start to download them on to the computer. It was a daunting task when we realised just how much we had accumulated in our two lifetimes, not to mention the inherited ones from our parents’ days. Of course it was never going to be a quick job, with every other pic bringing back a happy memory, but then that’s why we take photographs in the first place. There were the usual amateurish efforts - a dandelion; next doors cat; my Dad’s shed; two bits of plastic I had glued together and hung from the washing line with cotton, which I passed off as a photograph of a flying saucer. All laughably uninspiring...all precious. Then there were the old flames who fell into two distinct categories. The “Mmmm” stack, and the, “I didn’t did I?” collection. And it got me

thinking back to the first time the little fat cherub with wings, shot a dart at me. I was 13 and the star paperboy at our newsagents. Well only as far as the proprietor was concerned. You see, I took the evening round that nobody else wanted. It was that part of the estate where even the SAS would think twice about entering and which was full of dogs, many with only three legs – a mystery I often pondered, but not one I really wanted to know the answer to. Friday was collection night, and it was daunting. At number 113 (I hesitate to name the actual street, in case they still lurk) a creature twice as wide as it was tall, would throw open the door – all string vest and chin stubble - and ask me what the ‘ell I wanted. I knew that’s what it was saying because it was a grunt with a question mark attached. Then trying not to be intimidated, I would whisper, “One pound, two and sixpence for your papers Mrs Roper”. Then there was number 666 - but that is a whole new other story and one that is best left untold... It was on my morning round - a better part of the estate where the gates were still on

By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com

their hinges and the postman had kept the use of his legs that I first saw HER. SHE was everything a young boy could want in a girl...female and with a pulse..andd she rode a new Raleigh bicycle. Sigh.... She was a papergirl for a rival newsagent, and the happiest moment of my young life was when, after several weeks I summoned up the courage to talk to her and say hello, and oh joy, received a hello right back. Obviously she fancied me! After helloing for a month or two, I decided to take it to the next level and asked her name. Glenda she said, and to me there was never a more perfect name for an angel. I detected a bit of reticence on her part, but I put this down to shyness as I was now convinced she had the hots for me too - we had exchanged names. It was me who always had to seek her out for our morning exchange, but I figured this must be what was meant by playing hard to get and all part of the unfamiliar game of love. But that was cool, I knew deep down how she really felt. Then the morning arrived when my goddess did a swallow dive off the pedestal on which I had placed her and kicked me in the crotch – quite an acrobatic feat. It was a Saturday and known thereafter as Humiliation Day.

I found her at the door of 44 Landrake Crescent where she was collecting money. She saw me at the gate and there was a muttered exchange between her and the female customer. I couldn’t make out what was being said, but the lady glared and without taking the ciggie out of her mouth, said to Glenda in a loud voice, ‘Why don’t you just tell him to sling his bleedin’ hook love’. If the road had opened up in front of me to reveal a set of stairs, I would have taken them three at a time. In one telling sentence, it all became clear to me. My education had begun. Unable to speak; my face the colour of a whore’s hat and burning fit to ignite, I pedalled off as fast as my skinny legs could take me. Unrequited love - bitter sweet. But if by the slimmest of chances you ever get to read this Glenda . . . just look what you missed!

When Alqueria shook off the yoke of Spanish colonialism, actually they were asked to leave Spain’s sphere of influence then certain things were neglected. Civil laws which have proved impossible to reintroduce and all the pomp, ridiculous ceremony and meaningless protocol which certain countries seem to wallow in. In terms of things ridiculous Alqueria didn’t want to be outdone. With presidential elections looming it seemed the perfect time to set about these adornments of statehood. Several ideas were mooted, including inane over-medalled uniforms for the yet to be Alquerian Defence Force and incomprehensible etiquette to surround the Head of State. None however seemed to fit the collective anarchic soul of the Alquerian people. After much deliberation and countless ideas a public holiday was decided upon, The Día del Soplagaitas. Some of these ideas are worthy of note. Poyato wanted to award the Order of Remitroot to worthy citizens while Rodriquez wanted to award himself a knighthood, pension and certain rights regarding the young ladies of the Pueblo. Manuela’s idea in particular had merit but was unfortunately physically impossible to all but the most well built of men. The Día del Soplagaitas was to take place on the first day of Presidential campaigning and was designed to unite the inhabitants of the village. We are however talking about Alqueria. Foreign dignitaries were invited but none came. The international press were invited but only ‘Tiles and Tiling Monthly’ turned up. The very best of Alqueria would be on show and prospective candidates could give their policies an airing. However nothing in life is certain and in Alqueria this applies even more. The Day degenerated into a battle between the barrios. A serious and important debate concerning Alqueria’s antiquated drainage system was settled with an arm wrestling competition while a discussion embracing women’s rights led to the ladies’ sewing circle looting ‘La Lana Tienda de Betania’ The health service in the form of Dr. Enzo Matanzamas for the eastern barrio and Dr. Cortaduras the western had major differences. The question of private versus state healthcare led to a Remitroot drinking contest which left both medical men comatose in the gutter. The election was forgotten as the streets became battle grounds for the rebellious and idealistic. The village police officer, José Cabrasilbido hid in his wardrobe as anything portable was thrown and anything combustible ignited. These events didn’t bode well for the forthcoming elections no matter how predictable they were. The Día del Soplagaitas far from uniting Alqueria had driven the divide deeper. Who would have the courage to run for president will become apparent when the candidates’ deposits are lodged. Who will be the frontrunners? Who will hold the balance of power? We shall see...

Tata took over, a Jaguar’s head has been introduced, which finds itself on the bulky key fob. This looks out of place to me and the traditional leaping Jaguar, which is used liberally throughout should be the only emblem used. The original XJ was a tough act to follow in terms of style and quality and it was low to the ground but its replacement is far more reliable with superior build, if not so sporty. Overall, though this is without doubt a remarkably distinctive luxury vehicle and one that Great Britain should be proud. This statement of class represents huge value for money especially when the next best car is arguably the more expensive Rolls Royce, which shares many features.

TEST DRIVE: JAGUAR XJ

occupants back in their seats; useful if they become irritating… It’s hard to believe that under the bonnet resides a three-litre diesel engine, although there is an audible rattle on start-up, quickly forgotten when on the move. Engine stop/start, which cuts in and out with great reliability, is one of the smoothest and quickest on the market. This helps the largest Jaguar in the range to travel around 500 miles on its 82 litre tank. The sophisticated cruise control, ideal for motorway cruising, automatically keeps this short wheel base model a safe distance from the car in front, braking and accelerating when necessary. Ride is as you would expect, exceptionally comfortable. The trouble free all-aluminium body ensures good handling. For reversing there’s a helpful camera that appears in the centre console, which is just as well because you won’t see too much out of the rear window. The media centre in the middle of the dash is home to a sat nav, radio, controls for the heat and massage functions of the front seats. There’s a television, too. A massive glass roof stretches the length of the vehicle and its covers

retract electrically. These covers match the rest of the roof, which is lined in a dark cosy and welcoming suede, which compliments the black leather and dark wood interior. There’s a fair bit of chrome, too and even footrests for the rear passengers. It is however, disappointing that a rattle springs to attention from the driver’s door as I proceed down a country lane. Bearing in mind the length of the XJ it is perhaps a little disappointing that there is only a reasonably sized boot but its lid automatically rises and falls, ensuring there are no dirty fingers. “It’s a bit Marmite, too,” says a colleague. “You either love it or loath it.” Externally the Jaguar has a striking design but for me, it looks too similar to the smaller XF. Nevertheless it cuts an imposing and sophisticated presence. Since

There is justice in the world. This point is emphasised by the Jaguar XJ but not in the way that you might first imagine. Consider that drivers of this iconic luxury saloon are more often than not going to be underpaid chauffeurs and that passengers will typically be wealthy businessmen and politicians. The fact that the electrically adjustable and heated front seats are equipped with a 10minute massage function (as you can see from the video at testdrives. biz), which really does get to all the necessary areas, makes the driver and front passenger’s journey a thoroughly pleasurable experience. This luxury is reserved just for the front occupants and not the stressed PM in the back. What a dreadful pity when he has had such a tough day introducing policies such as allowing homeowners to add sizeable extensions without requiring planning permission - fuelling neighbour disputes. While he unwinds and no doubt curses journalists for missing the point about boosting work for builders, he considers his position in the shadow of the late Margaret Thatcher whose funeral was attended by representatives from 170 countries including the Queen. He becomes increasingly irate about a certain Mr Farage and his UK Independence Party. The chauffeur nods in sympathy, all the while enjoying the drive to Wales where the PM is set to tell the Welsh Assembly to modernise its public services… It’s not all bad in the rear though, because these seats are heated and electrically adjustable. It’s even possible for the rear occupants to move the front seats forward, if legroom is too tight. There are air conditioning controls, too. Television screens fitted in the back of the front headrests help passengers forget about their woes or indeed keep up to date with the latest news. This is reliant on there being reception and sadly in the depths of Hampshire and Dorset, where the bulk of the test takes place, there is none. Back in the front, by far the best part of the XJ, there are controls to satisfy every whim. Push a button and the steering wheel warms up. The dial for the automatic six speed box rises when the engine start button is pushed. If fast driving is necessary to get to the Commons or Chequers then using dynamic mode and sports control in conjunction will ensure swift progress, on occasions jolting

Boat Fishing. ‘Hissing Sid’ went out with Keith Darbyshire and Darryl Edwards, both over from Australia and their mates Alan Simpson and Arthur Doyle (Shall we nickname him ‘Conan’?) over from Liverpool. The sea from the land looked flat but there was a big swell that made for uncomfortable fishing. It was slow with the usual fish being caught, the weavers were extra big. ‘Orca Steve’ went out a couple of times, the first was a calm bright and windless morning with only a few ripples to

John lived up to his name WITH BEACHCOMBER JOHN (Tiddlerwinks) and caught well over a hundred fish himself with the overall boat total exceeding 200 fish. Only the bigger fish were kept with 70% being returned to the sea for the future. The wind picked up at 1pm as is often the case so they anchored for an hour to try and get a trigger fish but one wasn’t caught. There was an octopus which escaped back to the depths after letting go of the bait as it hit the surface. Steve could only think it to be a Marlin hunting the fish they had attracted around the boat. Shore Fishing. ‘Timothy WFS’ fished the rocks near Garrucha harbour and lure fished catching what sounded like a meagre and an Atlantic scad. ‘Stormin David’ fished the Garrucha shores in rough weather and didn’t see a fish. ‘London Bill’ caught dorada, white and banded bream from Garrucha’s rocks and beach. Coarse Fishing. ‘Puentes Ray’ made his weekly visit to Puentes, weather warm and sunny with a light breeze and water levels are still dropping. He was able to fish the first place he fished back in September as water levels are now ok. He decided to try a float rod and found a spot about 10 foot deep, so set up a waggler with 10lb main line and 6lb bottom and size 12 Kamasan Animal barbless hook with single grain sweetcorn. Before fishing he put in a good handful of boiled hemp and a new ground bait mix which he made up in the blender using

various bird seeds, pulses, bran, halibut pellets, tin of tuna and chicken feed. He was into his first carp within seconds and 11 more followed in the first 30 minutes, all around the 1-2lb mark. Ray fished until 6pm by which time he had had enough and doesn’t know the final count but is sure was close to 100lb, the biggest fish around 3lb, all in all a great day and he’s looking forward to many more. ‘Bryan V’ and mates have been up on the River Ebro and were unlucky to find the river in flood, not easy fishing as I know well. They did catch a few carp and some small cats. ‘Baza Barry’ fished Argos and had a good day catching around 80lbs of carp and the odd barbel in 10 hours. See photo of Bryan and an Ebro carp. Forum Golf Society

Forum Golf Society´s first visit in almost eight months to it´s former home course of Marina for an individual stableford competition on May 17th saw the golf course in a much improved condition, not yet back to former glories but certainly with greens looking and playing the best that they have in several years. The very strong winds that had been forecast duly appeared early afternoon, but the scoring was still more than respectable, most notably from our winner Tony Morgan with 38 points Clive Filkins (36 points) was second, Phil Elam third, Phil Harris fourth (both with 34 points), with Terry Moore back

39

to his normal steady self fifth with 33 points, the same as sixth placed Bob Cowan The five nearest the pin prizes went to Stan Whitty, Derek Manning, Tony Morgan, Byron Sherlock & Anne Holder, with Ian Robinson recovering sufficiently from “jet lag” by the sixteenth hole to claim the longest drive. Quite a number of the society´s regular players enjoyed a friendly Bowling evening at Los Amigos Bowling Centre the following night, with Brian Gyer recording the best score of the night, showing that brute force does have it´s rewards in some sports. It almost made up for

his “quiet” round the previous day, very probably caused by the pressure of seeing his lead at the top of the standings for the 2013 Golfer of the Year being whittled away by the closing pack, most notably Bob Cowan who is now getting very close indeed ! backhand down the line and approached the net with a sudden rush of determination. Federer’s fans gave him an enthusiastic ovation as he won his second game of the match, holding serve, and bringing the score up to 6-1 3-1 to Rafa, but was broken yet again with another backhand winner down the line by the Spaniard. A last-minute surge by the Swiss player reduced the deficit by two games, taking the match on past the 60-minute mark, but when Rafa gained another opportunity to serve it out to love, he clinched the second set eight minutes later. Next stop for the ‘king of clay’ is Roland Garros, in Paris, and given his current form he could break all records by scooping up the French Open title for the eighth time. He is expected to be fourth seed, meaning he will probably avoid having to face his old rival and current reigning world champion, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, until the semi-finals. Having won 11 of his 13 matches on clay this season, and 36 out of 38 overall, the ‘man from Manacor’ is proving unstoppable and has netted six titles out of eight tournaments since his comeback after a seven-month enforced break due to the knee injury that meant he had to scratch from the London Olympics.
