Over a hundred Harley Davidson lovers attended the ‘Almería HOG Rally’ image www.wallgood.com
The sixth edition of the ‘Almería HOG Rally’ brought together more than 100 Harley Davidson lovers from all over Spain. The event was organised by the Club AlmeríaChapter and the Concesionario Oficial Harley-Davidson de Almería. The organisers chose as their base the Hotel Portomagno in Aguadulce. From there the attendees rode a variety of routes with the aim of really getting to know the Poniente region and the lower Alpujarra Almeriense. As usual, the organisers enjoyed the cooperation of the Authorities of the Municipalities visited and the Guardia Civil de Tráfico, who accompanied the riders on the Saturday stage. Throughout the weekend a number of activities took place. Among which the visit to the premises of the agricultural company of ClisolAgro, where they explored the gems of the Mediterranean garden planted with sustainable and healthy methods. The Propia Gerente, Lola Gómez Ferrón, directed the tour, which proved an eyeopener for the bikers. The same afternoon the riders attended the traditional flag parade through the main streets of Aguadulce and the Puerto Deportivo.
Manuel Rodríguez, explained that ‘the purpose of the HOG Rally is that enthusiasts of this legendary brand enjoy a few days together, at the same time being made aware of the attractions offered by the province of Almería.’ This meeting is not the only one of its kind organised by the AlmeríaChapter. Throughout the year they organise routes in and out of the Province, solidarity campaigns, participation in celebrations such as the Noche en Blanco and the Desfile at the Feria del Mediodía which is organised by the Ayuntamiento de Almería and the Asociación Provincial de Empresarios de Hostelería, Ashal.
The Director of the AlmeríaChapter, José

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013
The Independent Theatre Group Out in Front Once Again “It Runs in the Family” By Master of Farce – Ray Cooney
After the long summer break, The Independent Theatre Group is returning with a fast flowing farce direct from it’s smash hit run in London’s West End, - “It Runs in the Family” by the master of farce – Ray Cooney. Once again we have the pleasure of introducing some new members to the Almanzora Valley stages as well our loyal and well loved members who many have seen before in our previous productions. The Group, started in existence with a Ray Cooney Farce – “Run for Your Wife” and since our formation we have regularly returned to this genre over the years. This story has all the usual attributes of farce, for which we are well known. - Six doors, double windows, double meanings, innuendoes, confusion and chaos, the list goes on. The story of this play centres round Dr. David Mortimore, a married neurologist with racked nerves, who is warming up for a career-making lecture. In bursts Jane Tate (once Nurse Tate) with the reasons for her hasty departure, 18 years and 9 months ago. Dr. Mortimore, you see, is the father of her 18-year-old daughter, Lesley, who has been picked up for drunken driving among other things and is now crying for her “long-lost daddy.” Needless to say, one character after another is bounding through doors that swing or slam in the doctors’ lounge at St. Andrew’s Hospital in London, and count among them other doctors, His wife, a police sergeant, an elderly patient who is forever in and out of a wheelchair, and a matron, addressed as Matron, a matriarch in her own rights and on occassions somewhat sever, as well as others adding to the mahem. The theatre we use in Cantoria – Teatro Saavedra – is still undergoing renovations, due to finish after Christmas, so we are presenting the play at Teatro Pedro Gilabert in Arboleas, commencing this week on Friday 25th October, Saturday 26th October and on Sunday 27th October. Friday and Saturday performances commence at 7.30 p.m. and Sunday is a matinee at 3.30p.m. and tickets are available on the door, from Total Entertainment, Girasol and 1Stop Pools in Albox and from Essentials and Sophia’s in Arboleas

They are always very good and very We are always on the look out for people who would like to join us and enjoy the fun and good natured banter of Amateur Dramatics. Please don’t think you have to go on stage – there are always as many, if not more involved back stage and front of house as actually “treading the boards”. At the beginning of 2014 we shall be undertaking “Curtain Call”. This will be an Anthology of musical theatre from the “Great War” to the present day all wrapped up in a play about a closing theatre, and the theatre cast and crew saving it from closure – as the catch phrase from “ Miranda “ says – “Great Fun”

Double win for the Ford-Dunn brothers at Alicante’s Spanish Supermoto round
Both the Ford-Dunn brothers were in dominant form at last weekends 4th round of the Spanish Supermoto championship held at Villena, Alicante. The British brothers who live in Murcia had been training hard over the summer to make sure they were in top form for the final rounds of the season, and it showed with both brothers qualifying in 2nd
position in their respective classes giving them a front row starting position for their races. Anthony was the first to race in the prestigious SM Open class and secured the overall win for the day by taking a win and two second positions from his three races, beating the reigning Spanish
champion Francesca Cucharera and former Spanish champion Israel Escalera. Anthony’s last race was gripping as he fought through to 2nd position after a bad start that gave him enough points to take the overall victory. Next out was older brother Mat who was racing in the SM Master 35 class. Mat finished a close 2nd in his first race and knew that to take the overall win and maintain his championship lead then a win in the 2nd race was the only option. Before Mat had even lined up on the grid for the second race he was in trouble as the toll of racing in 30 degrees of heat on a rough track had given him chronic cramps in his arms and legs that made racing impossible. The start of the race was delayed slightly whilst mat was fed salt on the grid until the cramps subsided and racing could start. Once the race started Mat found himself in third position with some work to do to get to the front, but he did just that with an
outstanding effort that saw him dive down the inside of the leader to take the lead and the win on the last corner of the last lap. The 2-1 result gave him the overall win and both brothers stood on the top step of the podium at the end of the days racing. Team Sponsor Shane Stratton from Stratton Motorsports had flown in to watch the days racing and was delighted with the double victory and the possibility of clinching the SM Master championship at the forth coming Albaida race. With Mat now holding a 20 point lead in the SM Master 35 Spanish
championship, he now has it all to play for in the final round of the Spanish championship to be held at Albaida, Alicante on the 2nd and 3rd November. The Supermotoland Team and their sponsors, Advance Moves International Removals and Stratton Motorsports, will welcome anyone attending the event to support the brothers in their final race of the season to take championship honors. Further details can be found on the teams website at

Glasses that can translate a menu have been demonstrated by a major Japanese mobile operator. NTT Docomo’s wearable Intelligent Glasses can project an image of translated text over unfamiliar characters, the company said. The spectacles also allow the wearer to view and manipulate virtual images. The wearable technology was demonstrated at Ceatec 2013, a consumer electronics show in Japan. NTT Docomo said that Intelligent Glasses could be a boon to tourists. “Character recognition technology enables instant language translation for users travelling abroad and reading restaurant menus and other documents,” NTT Docomo said. Translated text The glasses, which are still at a research stage, can show translated text in a user’s first language, according to the company. The head-mounted display can translate Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean languages. Translation takes over five seconds for the prototype. The technology can also turn flat surfaces into pseudo-touchscreens, NTT Docomo said. A person can manipulate a virtual image in their field of vision using a ring that relays hand movements on the blank surface back to the glasses. The spectacles also use facial recognition software to display personal details of a person who is in view, the company added. The data is called up from remote servers using smartphones. Wearable tech Wearable technologies have “tremendous potential, but face a lot of hurdles”, IDC consumer technology consultant Jonathan Gaw told the BBC. “Small-bore applications like on-the-fly menu translation won’t sell a pair of smart glasses on their own, but a large eco system of applications might,” he said. Smart glasses face immediate issues of size, weight and battery life, Mr Gaw said. In the consumer world, fashion and social acceptability concerns also come into play, he added. Some of the major technology companies are in the process of developing wearable technology. For example, Google is developing head-mounted spectacles as part of the Google Glass project.
Developers are in the process of putting together applications for Google Glass.

Expatriates in receipt of UK pensions and benefits may soon be contacted by the Department of Work & Pensions to confirm their international bank details. From 31st January 2014, the Department for Work and Pensions will need an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and Bank Identification Code (BIC) in order to make payments to expatriates’ accounts in Spain and other Eurozone countries. This change is due to new European Union regulations which aim to make payments between EU countries faster and more secure. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) already holds IBAN and BIC details for most of its customers. But expatriates whose details are not yet held by the DWP will soon receive a letter asking for them. Bank customers will not be asked to provide any further details of their accounts, such as passwords. It is only the IBAN and BIC details that are needed If you receive a letter, you should complete the attached form and return it to the DWP as soon as possible, says the British Embassy in Madrid. Failure to do so may mean your payments will be stopped because after 31st January 2014, banks in Eurozone countries will not accept any DWP direct payments without these details. You can get the IBAN and BIC details from your bank account statement or directly from your bank. Expatriates only need to provide additional bank details if they receive payments into a Eurozone account outside the United Kingdom and have received a letter from the DWP. Those whose pension or benefit is paid into a UK account are unaffected by this change in EU regulations. Officials from the Department for Work and Pensions are also reminding customers who have changed address, and who have yet to inform the DWP, to contact the International Pension Centre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 0044 191 218 7777 in order to make sure their details are up to date. For more information about the change to European bank account numbers, visit the European Commission website at http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/ payments/sepa/index_en.htm . For media enquiries only, contact the Embassy press office on 917 146 364 / 363

However, this was not an ordinary meeting because after the conclusion of the normal agenda the real reason for the meeting became apparent. Firstly the Branch Chairman, Terry Joy, called forward Graham Knight and announced to him that the Branch wished to offer him the status of ‘Honorary’ membership of the RAFA Branch in recognition of all he had done to help the branch since it’s inauguration in 2004. Graham responded that he shocked but honoured to accept this kind thought. If this was not enough the Chairman then introduced Bob Hunt who after a few words about RAFA in general announced the real reason for his visit. This was to present the prestigious award of the European Area President’s Certificate to three of the membership. Colin Broad and Pat and Graham Distin, awarded in recognition of their unstinting hard work and dedication to the the Branch, and RAFA in general, over many years. divers will monitor Posidoniaoceanica in the waters of Roquetas de Mar The Consejería de MedioAmbiente y OrdenacióndelTerritorio has finalised the campaign for a volunteer network organised by the Junta de Andalucía to improve knowledge and the conservation status of Posidoniaoceanica in the Andalucian Mediterranean. The event took place in the LICArrecifes de Roquetas de Mar, on the Barrera de Los Bajos. The distribution of materials and a training chat took place in Aguadulce marina starting at 8.00 in the Centro de BuceoAquatours. Dives took place from 10:30 to 12:30, after which the data gathered was recorded. Volunteers, accompanied by members of the Life program, gathered data on the density and length of leaves, area of cover, associated fauna and other information on the state of conservation of the sea grass. The methodology used by these volunteers is standardised and coordinated with technicians using Programa de GestiónSostenibledelMedio Marino de la Junta. This initiative, developed through thePrograma de VoluntariadoAmbiental,is part of the LIFE + Posidonia Andalucía for the conservation of this endangered marine plant, a project financed by the FondoEuropeoLife+Naturaleza. These latest activities have taken place on theLitoraldelLevanteAlmerienseand in the Cabo de Gata. The detailed mapping of sea grass prairiesalong the Almería coastline undertaken by the Life + Project has identified the existence of 981 hectares of this habitat. The EU offers priority protection (1120 Habitat of Posidoniaoceanica) in the PonienteAlmeriense, where there is estimated to be more than 3,100 acres. The province of Almeria has more than 16,000 hectares of Posidonia, representing 92% of the grassland areas throughout the Andalucian coast. These 16,000 acres are a major sink for capturing greenhouse gases in the province, and are the best defence against beach erosion. Almería has 13 of the 16 monitoring stations in Andalucia, as the Almeríacoastline is where the prairies develop more extensively and are the best preserved of the Andalucian Mediterranean. The Red de VoluntariosPosimed Andalucía was created in 2009 by the Consejería de MedioAmbiente de la Junta de Andalucía, and is integrated into the national Posimed network and aims to determine the health status of Posidonia. teleprensa.es

friday golf society 28 golfers including 3 guests took part in a Reverse Waltz competition with two hidden holes at a much later start time than recently of 13:22 for the first tee time. The weather was kind to us with sunshine and not much wind even though we finished quite late. The winners with a score of 85 points were Jacqui, Anita G, Jim Sh and Peter Wa. They beat the 2nd place team by scoring 2 points on the hidden holes compared to the second teams one point. However they would have won anyway on lower handicap. Last place and chocolates went to
Nina, David C, John N and his guest Ian A with a score of 58 points. Nearest the pin was won by Mel with a distance of 2.90m. Thanks to Lennart for announcing the scores and giving out the prizes this week. It is a shame that no matter which way he tried to do the scoring Jacqui’s team beat his for first place. Two golfers played better than their handicap this week. Well done to Peter Wa and Ivan who both scored 37 points. The Friday golf next week starts at the earlier time of 11:54.

Is exercise as effective as drugs for heart disease and diabetes? A new study, published in the British Medical Journal, suggests that exercise and drugs often have similar results when used to treat heart disease, prevent diabetes and for stroke rehabilitation. The researchers even found that in some cases, exercise was more effective. “No statistically detectable differences were evident between exercise and drug interventions in the secondary prevention of coronary heart disease and prediabetes,” the study’s authors wrote. “Physical activity interventions were more effective than drug treatment among patients with stroke.” While this study isn’t a license to forgo pills that have been prescribed to you, it’s definitely worth adding more exercise to your daily routine - and even talking to your doctor about whether you could replace your pills with a structured fitness program. After all, the benefits of exercise are plentiful, and well documented. Just going for a long walk every day lowers your blood pressure, can help you lose weight, and could reduce your risk for breast cancer.
Enjoy!
Walking can help you lose weight, but it can turn into a boring drudge. Challenge your workout with some new ideas to walk off the weight: We are creatures of habit. If you have a regular route then break your habit by occasionally walking your normal route in the other direction. It not only beats
boredom, but it’ll wake you up to the world around you by helping you see things from fresh angles. Go left instead of right when you take your first step. Make a point to notice three things you never observed from the opposite direction. If something is making you angry, or simply won’t go right, go for a walk! You’ll not only get a great physical workout because the adrenaline will make you walk faster, but you’ll also burn off some of the stress hormones coursing through your body. Go for a walk with someone. You’ll be less likely to duck out than if you are going on your own, plus a good natter will make the distance seem all too short! Sometimes less is more. Rather than a 45minute walk, take three separate 15-minute walks. You’ll derive just as much health benefit, plus you’ll keep your metabolism running throughout the whole day so you’ll burn more calories. Got a problem? Go for a walk. Walking relaxes your mind and body, and many times the solution will just come to you as you walk. Go for a walk between 4 and 7 p.m. Your body temperature is highest then, your muscles are warmest, and you’ll have plenty to mull over from the day. The resulting calm will help you drift off at bedtime for a good night’s sleep. Lastly - Be glad. The mere fact that you can go for a walk is something to be glad about. Count up how many other things there are to be glad about.

9 Health Benefits of Almonds:
Serums are thick liquid-like products with active ingredients like vitamins and anti-oxidants that are formulated with smaller molecules so they can penetrate deep into the skin. Serums are designed to penetrate and treat various skin conditions, such as redness, dehydration or lack of firmness, wrinkles, dark spots or to brighten the skin. A facial serum or a facial moisturizer? Are you finding it hard to decide what’s better for your skin: a facial serum or a facial moisturizer? Here’s what you need to know.
How to choose the right serum? Choosing a facial serum for a particular skin type or concern can be difficult; read labels to figure out which ones are best for your complexion. When choosing a facial serum, keep in mind your skin type, whether it is oily, dry, combination or sensitive. Then,
How to properly apply a serum? Things get a little more complicated when you are also using facial serum facial serum – when should you apply your serum and when should you apply your moisturizer, and what about the toner? Well, first start with your toner. If you have dry skin, apply the serum serum right away, when skin is still damp to seal in as much moisture as possible. Wait a few minutes until the serum is fully absorbed, and then apply your moisturizer. That will allow you to lock and increase the benefits of the serum. In other words, you apply the serum after your toner and before your moisturizer!
image:nabillanarasita.wordpress.com
People are often confused about the differences between a moisturizer and a facial serum, and may be unsure if they should use one or both products. While facial serums can give you added moisture, the main reason you’d want to use a facial serum is to get added nutrients into deeper layers of your skin that a regular moisturizer is not able to reach. Due to their large molecules, moisturizers can only penetrate the first layer of the skin, allowing them to to hydrate and seal in moisture. A facial serum is able to penetrate into all three layers of the skin because it is made of smaller molecules. The serums ability to go deeper into the skin is what allows it to help combat many common beauty complaints.
determine what issues you are trying to prevent or correct, and find products that contain ingredients to combat these issues, such as antioxidants to prevent aging, retinol (commonly referred to as vitamin A) to reverse aging, or hyaluronic acid to keep your skin nourished. Some skin serum ingredients are useful in fading dark spots on the face, while others give a healthy glow to dull, grayish complexions.Using a serum that’s just right for you will go a long way toward improving the appearance of your skin.

1. They reduce heart attack risk. Those who consume nuts five times a week have about a 50 percent reduction in risk of heart attack according to the Loma Linda School of Public Health. 2. They lower ‘bad’ cholesterol. Almonds added to the diet have a favorable effect on blood cholesterol levels, according to a clinical study by Dr. Gene Spiller, Director of the Health Research and Studies Center, Inc. 3. They protects artery walls from damage. It was found that the flavonoids in almond skins work in synergy with the vitamin E, thus reducing the risk of heart disease (Research at Tufts University). 4. Almonds help build strong bones and teeth. The phosphorus in almonds helps make this possible. 5. They provide healthy fats and aid in weight loss: Although nuts are high in fat, frequent nut eaters are thinner on average than those who almost never consume nuts. (Data from the Nurses’ Health Study) Those who ate nuts at least two times per week were 31 percent less likely to gain weight than were those who never or seldom ate them in a study involving 8865 adults. (WHFood’s article on almonds) 6. Almonds lower the rise in blood sugar and insulin after meals 7. They help provide good brain function. Almonds contain riboflavin and L-carnitine, nutrients that boost brain activity and may also reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. 8. They nourish the nervous system. According to Ayurveda, almonds help increase high intellectual level and longevity. 9. They alkalize the body. Almonds are the only nut and one of the few proteins that are alkaline forming. When your body is not alkaline enough, you risk osteoporosis, poor immune function, low energy and weight gain. Did you know? Almonds are actually stone fruits related to cherries, plums and peaches. United States is the largest producer of almonds. From ancient Egypt to modern times, almonds have always been a popular ingredient in lotions and potions

The story of Toof
I was born in the streets of Mobile, Alabama. When I was a still a baby, I was dumped at the county shelter. I was only about eight weeks old and still living at the county shelter when some large dog viciously attacked and maimed me. I nearly died. Nearly ... The people at the county shelter deemed my injuries too severe and costly and thought it best to put me to sleep. However, the angels from the Mobile SPCA swooped down and whisked me back to their shelter because they weren’t about to let my life end before I ever had a chance to live it. The SPCA angels saved my life that day, but I was still badly injured. The attack left me deaf in my left ear, missing half my left ear, and my left rear leg had to be amputated at the hip. I had a rough puppyhood, to say the least. After I healed, I was put up for adoption by the SPCA, so they posted my story and picture on Petfinder. Days went by, yet no one showed up to meet me.
Weeks passed and not a single person called to ask about me. I went to the monthly Petsmart adoptions, but still no one wanted me. What was I doing wrong? I was as sweet and friendly as any dog out there and, not to sound conceited, but I’m pretty darn cute! After four months of rejection and disinterest, I was starting to give up hope. Just about then, a man and woman named Gary and Kathy came to meet me. They read my story, fell in love with me, and immediately adopted me. Gary and Kathy were thrilled to have me, but something bothered them. They were confused as to why no one else called in those four months. Gary and Kathy asked one of the SPCA angels if she knew the reason, and she replied, “When people read that Too Fab lost his leg, half his ear, and half his hearing, they moved on to the next dog because they don’t want a ‘damaged’ one or the extra work caring for a

special needs animal. “ This really upset my new humans. They didn’t care that I was missing a leg, half an ear, or that I can’t hear so well. After so many of our service personnel have lost life and limb fighting for our freedom, after thousands of innocent Americans were maimed on 9/11, and many more in the bombing of innocents in Boston, you would hope human attitudes would have changed. That is my mission. I am currently making the rounds visiting residents at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. When I’m old enough, I would like to get my therapy dog certification so I can visit children’s wards in hospitals and work with our returning amputee veterans to help them cope with their new reality. I want people to understand that I and others like me are not “damaged” or “defective”. Hardly ...we are survivors. So, although I have some damaged and/or missing parts, my capacity for love remains without limits and there isn’t a single thing I cannot accomplish. As a matter of fact, I am MORE of a dog since I lost some parts because I’m doing it with less and without any assistance whatsoever. I have to figure everything out myself and make it work ... and I never fail! You see, I am not a disabled dog, just a dog with a disability ... and there’s a world of difference between the two. Love, Toof!

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Q. My father has deceased in Aguamarga,Almería , Spain .He had a house in Spain worth approx. 200,000 euro and a bank account in Jersey worth £70,000.He was a Spanish resident and had made a will leaving his house and account to his three children in equal shares. (all three of us are resident in Sevilla ) A. You need to declare to the Spanish tax authorities both the house plus the funds (in any case the Spanish tax authorities in Spain know of its existence as I presume your father will have declared the existence of the funds in Jersey on his 720 form. The good news is that no tax will be due because each of the three children is entitled, as resident in Andalucia to an exemption of 175,000 euro on an inheritance received from his/her father. The law in Spain is simple: If the heir is a Spanish resident he/she pays inheritance tax on anything he/she receives anywhere in the world, (unless bilateral agreements with the country where the assets are situated say otherwise which is not the case with the UK) If the heir is non-resident of Spain he/she only pays inheritance tax in Spain on the assets he receives that are situated in Spain at the time of death.

House sales in Spain from kyero.com
According to the General Council of Notaries’ statistics on housing transactions, the number of purchases made by foreign buyers increased by 22.6% during the second quarter of 2013. Specifically, these buyers purchased 14,593 homes in Spain in that period, which the notaries said represents a “significant increase over previous quarters”. In the distribution of these operations, those made by non-resident foreigners accounted for 54.9% of the total. The Council said that “the behaviour between the segment of resident and non-resident foreigners has been inconsistent”, and that the most likely trigger of this recent surge would be the authorisation to grant residency permits to purchasers of real estate with a value of 500,000 euros or more. The first quarter experienced a moderate increase of 4.4%, following a “strong” increase in transactions in the last quarter of 2012 due to the elimination of the tax deductions for house purchases, which came into force on 1st January, while nonresident foreigners were seen as the “engine” of all foreign transactions, increasing by 43% year-on-year. The British community has donated a collection of 350 euros for schools in the Municipality. The British community of Zurgena, in collaboration with parents of students as well as shops and local businesses, has donated 350 euros to the Ayuntamiento for improvements and maintenance of schools in the Municipality. The money has been raised by organising a charity event. It was attended by about 220 people and was enlivened by musical groups playing popular songs from the 60s, to the delight of the audience. The Estación de Renfe was the setting for a Gala starring typical English dishes prepared by residents of the community for the appreciation of the Zurgeneros. Peter Dell and Gary Bowen, residents of Zurgena of British origin, explained the aim of these solidarity actions at the donation ceremony at the Ayuntamiento. ‘This was the seventh year in a row that we have organized charity events. Although previously we designated the collection for the orphanage at Vera, this time we thought about helping our local community and its facilities.’ The Alcalde, Luis Díaz, thanked the organisers for what he saw as ‘an important symbolic gesture, full of good intentions.’ Accompanied by other councillors he praised ‘the tremendous effort,’ and promised that the English community ‘will be treated as it deserves, working with them in any way that you request.’ His words were backed by support from the Concejal de Tercera Edad y Comunidad Británica, Jim Simpson and the leader of the Comercio y Turismo, Sampo Penttila.

The Annual Poppy Appeal Kicks Off This Week
...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES
84 Unemployed get help from the Town Hall The Ayuntamiento of Roquetas has signed employment contracts to 84 unemployed people. With the signing of the relevant employment contracts 84 workers will be employed for three months to the selected applicants in different professional areas. They are all working in response to the demographic and professional experience of each of them, and highlights the interest and willingness that workers have shown to achieve the objectives of the program, Programa de Ayuda a la Contratación. Alcalde Gabriel Amat, accompanied by the Concejala de Recursos Humanos, Francisca Toresano, and the Concejal de Servicios Sociales, José Galdeano, spoke on the current economic situation of the country and especially in Roquetas , and efforts being made by the Ayuntamiento to help the unemployed as much as possible. teleprensa.es
The musical tribute to Queen ‘ God Save the Queen ‘ has arrived at the Teatro Auditorio de El Ejido The musical ‘God Save the Queen’, a tribute to Queen, has arrived at the Teatro Auditorio as part of a tour of Spanish cities. The Concejal de Cultura, José Andrés Cano, said that ‘this is a show that has generated great excitemen, and is already sold out. One thousand spectators will see the band led by the Italian Piero Venery, undoubtedly the best Freddie Mercury.’
The Mojacar branch of The Royal British Legion in Spain are now out and about distributing poppy boxes to many restaurants, bars, markets and selected businesses. Last year we collected €14,859 and would of course like to beat that figure this year, with members undertaking many sponsored activities this year. An example would be Maureen Catling and Valerie Quinnell who both jumped out of an aircraft at 15,000 ft above the skies of Seville on 5th June. These two brave souls have collected almost €2000 so far towards our Poppy Appeal! Another couple, Beppie and Peter Grange have done a 20 mile a day sponsored walk in Holland this summer and are giving a talk to our group this Thursday. Please show your support so we can make this year a record year and thanks to all our members and businesses that make this possible!
Primark, the Irish clothing retailer, have delayed the opening of the Roquetas de Mar store. They are now set to open on the 28 November 2013 this has been delayed from October. The store will be more than 4,000 square metres and will be in the Gran Plaza shopping centre. Primark will be providing jobs for 100 people the selection process is still in being carried out. The Roquetas del Mar will be the 40th store to open in Spain, continuing its growth and is going form strength to strength. Primark specialise in high fashion, low cost budget clothing, shoes and accessories for all the family. They also do a range of soft home furnishings. The first stor Primark opened was in June 1969 in Mary Street (Dublin).
The two hour show is almost word for word what was a Queen concert; musically and aesthetically, with fifteen costume changes that match Freddie’s own original designs. It has the look and feel of Queen. The show has toured Spain since 2006 under this name than 150 thousand people have seen it. (A bit on Queen, to go with it, or not, as you think)
and during this time more
The beginnings of Queen can be traced to 1968, to Imperial College, London, when Brian May and Roger Taylor formed the trio Smile with Tom Staffel as the group ‘s bassist and lead singer. After Tim Staffell departed in the spring of 1970, May and Taylor took on vocalist Freddie Mercury in April 1970 to form Queen. In 1971 John Deacon completed the lineup as bass guitarist Though Freddie Mercury’s personality always dominated in the press, all four members of the group actually wrote huge hits: Freddie Mercury, vocals (Bohemian Rhapsody) Brian May, guitars (We Will Rock You) Roger Taylor, drums & percussion (Radio Ga Ga) John Deacon, bass guitar (Another One Bites the Dust)Most of the group ‘s albums contained at least one song written by each member, and though Mercury penned a lot of Queen’s hits, he was by no means the dominant songwriter; indeed, the group considered themselves creative equals, and quiet bassist John Deacon wrote one of their biggest hits; Another One Bites the Dust. In their later years, two or three or even all four band members commonly contributed to single songs.

News from the Roquetas Dog Shelter Another consignment has arrived this week at the Roquetas
dog shelter, situated at La Mojonera. Five small puppies were abandoned and packed in one cardboard box, tightly huddled together. Two adult dogs also arrived, RELAJAO and RASPA. They are all now being cared for at the shelter. It is not known yet whether RASPA, who was in a terrible state, close to starvation, and the puppies will survive, but at least RELAJO seems to be enjoying a little bit of comfort at the shelter.

The little terrace at the shelter with its Andalusian patio is complete with flower pots on the wall and a bougainvillea plant, providing colour and shade. The terrace was built for Erika, the Manager at the shelter. It was meant to be her refuge from all the stress and hard work that comes with managing the shelter. However, the smallest inhabitants of the shelter wanted to live close to her and feel her reassuring presence at night. They can hear her fussing around inside the apartment and smell something delicious being cooked on the stove. They know they will soon be sharing small bits of her supper. This is just a little bit of a normal home for them. The little dogs have taken over the terrace and Erika has willingly accepted their presence. However, as more and more dogs are being abandoned at the shelter, the terrace is becoming more and more crowded. It is bursting at the seams with all its inhabitants.
quiet, cute little fellow who gets along with everyone, including cats. His favourite spot is a little chair from which he can quietly observe his mates from a comfortable position. A number of trees have now been ‘adopted’ and are being watered every week by the adopters. The trees were donated by the local Council and have literally been a drain on the shelter’s finances ever since. There are still a few more trees that need ‘adopting’ and regular weekly water, so that they can grow large and bushy to give vital shade from the fierce sun for the dogs. You can also help by donating unwanted blankets and sheets. Any unwanted
On Saturday, Erika asked the volunteers to take the little ones for a walk. It was a day of joy for the dogs and also the dog walkers. The dogs were eager to take in all the new sights and smells on their little journey. They were grateful for any sign of affection and are so much in need of forever homes. MAIK is one of the many dogs deserving attention. He was born in June 2009 and has been at the shelter since December 2010. MAIK is a
Jersey To End Banking Secrecy For EU Residents
By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks Jersey is to drop the withholding tax option under the EU Savings Tax Directive. It will be mandatory for financial institutions to automatically exchange information on their clients’ bank accounts, effectively bringing the era of banking secrecy to an end in the offshore centre. This will bring Jersey in line with Guernsey and the Isle of Man, who have already abolished the withholding tax (or “retention tax”) option. It is proposed that the official start date will be 1st January 2015, though financial institutions will be allowed to start earlier
if they wish to harmonise operations with those in Guernsey and Isle of Man. If you live in Spain and have a savings account in Jersey, your bank will pass details about your bank account to the Spanish tax authorities. This will be done automatically each year, regardless of whether the Spanish authorities have requested information. The information exchanged under the Savings Tax Directive is: • Your name, address and residency details • Details of the source of the funds • The amount of savings held • The period to which it relates. Currently, this applies to savings income.
Over the coming years the Directive will be extended to include life insurance products, pensions, employment income, directors’ fees, immoveable property, dividends, capital gains and royalties.
new overseas asset reporting obligation.
This will be another tool for the Spanish tax authorities to use in their fight against offshore tax evasion. It will help them collect unpaid taxes and ensure that foreign bank accounts are fully taxed in future. They will most likely compare the information received with that provided by you on your tax return, and also on Form 720.

WEEKEND TV TO WATCH Will Gary bow out with a win this year?
27
Ashley Taylor Dawson is the one to watch
Strictly Come Dancing BBC1 Saturday 26th October 7.30
Hollyoaks’ hunk Ashley Taylor Dawson is the one to watch – and not just because he was the first celeb this year to bare his torso. Factor in handsome pros such as Aljaz and Artem, and Darcey can’t be the only one who’s finding it difficult to concentrate on the dancing! Under the guidance of teacher Ola Jordan, Ashley’s footwork can only go from strength to strength. IMAGE:WWW.WHATSONTV.CO.UK
Could he help Ola fight off stiff competition from other past winners Artem and Brendan Cole to become the first pro to lift the glitterball trophy twice? WHATSONTV.CO.UK
X-Factor 9pm Saturday 26th October ITV1 IMAGE: www.dailymail.co.uk
Is it just us or are the judges being overly nice this year? Gary started out trying to fill Simon Cowell’s bad-guy boots, but it looks like Auntie Sharon’s warm and fuzzy vibes are rubbing off on the once-grumpy judge. It is his final series after all, so why not leave on a good note? But could Gary also bag a win with The Groups? Kingsland Road are a readymade pop act (they’ve got the hair to prove it), while Rough Copy were second favourites following the first live show. If both are still in the running, there could be a battle of the boy bands on the cards. Even if the lads don’t survive the viewers’ vote, we doubt it’ll be the end of the Road… Look out, One Direction! WHATSONTV.CO.UK

Preparation method: Base:
• 55g butter •200g digestive biscuits, crushed •55g white sugar
Filling:
• 16oz Philadelphia cream cheese •1/3RD cup Baileys •225g sugar • 8oz double cream, whipped •grated chocolate • quarter cup of water, cold •1 pack gelatine You will need an 8inch loose bottom cake tin
1. Mix the 55g sugar, crushed biscuits and melted butter together in a pan. 2. Firmly press the mixture into the bottom of the cake tin using your hand 3. Place the water in a pan, sprinkle the gelatine over the top and leave to stand for 1 minute. Cook on a low heat for 3 minutes stirring continuously. Once all the granules have dissolved set aside 4. Mix the cream cheese and sugar and Baileys in small amounts, alternatively until its all mixed into the cream cheese. Beat well with a blender between each addition.(Tip: Do not mix the gelatine and baileys together to add to the cream cheese, it will curdle and form lumps in the finished cheesecake, add them separately) 5. Refrigerate the mixture until slightly thickened about 2030 mins 6. Meanwhile whip the double cream 7. Add the cream to mixture and stir in gently 8. Once mixed together pour over the crust and refrigerate 9. If desired grate chocolate on top for decoration

Blind entrepreneur launches app
A blind entrepreneur has launched a new app to revolutionise the way Britain’s 1.5 million visually impaired people eat out in the country’s restaurants. Matthew Wadsworth created the Good Food Talks app after discovering many blind and visually impaired people share his frustration at having menus read out loud to them.
Braille and large-print menus are also difficult to keep up to date. The businessman and musician, 38, was convinced there was a better way and the solution came to hand – his smartphone.
“The idea is that whether you are totally blind and use the textto-speech software or simply need to invert colours or zoom to make things clearer, the app makes ordering in a restaurant a less stressful experience,” said Mr Wadsworth.
Good Food Talks uses GPS tracking to display the nearest dining outlets signed up to the scheme. It uses a database of menus and the accessibility functions of your smartphone to take the stress out of ordering. While some restaurants offer Braille menus, this is not a complete solution since only 1 per cent of people in this category in the UK can read Braille.
In a survey run in conjunction with the Macular Society, the entrepreneur found that 87 per cent of visually impaired diners rely on their companions to read the menu aloud. Mr Wadsworth added: “The hope is that, with the app, everyone at the table is more equal, making dining out more dignified for everyone.”

Mr Wadsworth isn’t your everyday businessman. Born blind, he was the first blind student to attend the Royal Academy of Music and is a lute virtuoso. Last year, he played at the Paralympics closing ceremony. The principle behind Good Food Talks is that “visually impaired people shouldn’t have to pay to read a restaurant menu”. Instead, restaurants pay to upload menus and the scheme has been welcomed by the Sustainable Restaurant Association. A spokesman for the organisation said, “It should be a no-brainer for any restaurant to have better access to blind and visually impaired customers.” In addition to 77 branches of
Simon Kossoff, chief executive officer of Carluccio’s, said: “This is such an obvious idea and the technology is so simple that it amazes me nobody has done it before.” About 360,000 people are registered blind in the UK but as many as 1.5 million people are visually impaired to some extent, according to the Royal National Institute of Blind People and the Macular Society. Adrian Lee, 55, a blind musician from London, is one of app’s early adopters. He said: “I’m restricted to a few places that I know if I don’t want somebody else to read the menu out to me. This app has the potential not only to give me more independence, but also far more choice.”

Carluccio’s, the app has already been adopted by half a dozen independent restaurants in London. Mr Wadsworth has his sights set on signing up other major chains, including Giraffe and Nandos.

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013
viewpoint
I like pomegranates, though I’ve always regarded them as a bit of a challenge to eat – you can’t bite them like apples, or peel them like oranges, so I have developed my own method, which is effective, but not possible in polite society. First, I take my pomegranate outside, to the stone garden furniture, which doesn’t stain. I get the kitchen hand towel, wrap it around my neck and tie it at the back as though I were a giant baby. Using a very sharp knife, and squinting my eyes against the high-power juice jets, I cut it in half and then quarters. That was the easy, and comparatively clean part of the operation. I grab a quarter in my sticky wet fingers and turn it inside out. At this point some of the seeds will pop out and career away across the table, so I pursue them and scoop them up into the palm of my hand – it’s not possible to neatly pick them up, they either skitter away or burst. Having eaten the escapees, I turn my attention to the inverted quarter of fruit, sitting seed-side out on the table like a mutant alien sea slug. I have a quick look around, to make sure

nobody is looking, pick the section up and simply gronff the seeds off it with my teeth in a display of animal gluttony that would cause a well brought up gorilla to wince. However, I am aware of this fatal flaw in my sophisticated upbringing, so I set about to discover the ‘proper’ way to eat a pomegranate. According to Jamie Oliver you simply cut it in half and whack the back of each half with a wooden spoon, upon which the seeds give up and fall neatly into the handily placed bowl. All I can say is that my pomegranates are made of sterner stuff than Jamie’s! I whacked and whacked and ended up with the sort of mess that even hardened Scenes of Crime Investigators would have found disturbing! So I tried Method 2: I got a big bowl, half filled it with water, immersed the pomegranate, cut it in quarters, turned it inside out, and lightly brushed the exposed seeds off, the whole operation taking place completely under water (for the pomegranate). Once drained I had a neat bowl of seeds, and the immediate environment did not resemble a cheap remake of the Limaria Chain Saw Massacre. I can now eat pomegranates in Polite Society.
Wined Me Up and Let’s Dance
My friend Paul phoned me the other day and asked if I fancied a day out on his bike. No great distance, just a ride down to Los Alcázares for a spot of lunch and a couple of beers for me and soft drinks for him; the thrill of the open road and the exhilarating feel of the wind in our faces. By the way, what is a ‘spot’ of lunch? We all use the term but it’s ridiculous. I mean, it sort of indicates a smidgen of food; a micro portion of beef with two chips and a pea perhaps. Same as ‘square meal’, where did that come from? With Paul and me, a pile of lunch would be more accurate.
“But I digress”
The girls thought they might as well get together while we were out on the razzle, so I took the light of my life to Pauls house and while the girls chatted about girlie things and decided who they were going to character assassinate that day, Paul and I began to tog-up for
By Colin Bird :
badbirdnow@gmail.com
our bikers day out. When I say togup; Paul had dismissed the idea of leathers or even long pants. Shorts and tee shirt are fine he assured me, far too hot to bother with any of that stuff and besides, if we are involved in a pile up, we wouldn’t have a chance anyway.
“Triffic”
So it was just a question of putting on the helmets. Not so easy for me though, with my sticky out ears and a mop of hair to cope with. It didn’t help that the helmet was made for a Hobbit and once I had maneuvered it into place I felt giddy with claustrophobia. It was hot too and with the eye shield down, like being inside a polythene bag – a feeling I had experienced before when I awoke with a start one night to find my wife standing there holding a Tesco bag over my head. I never did quite buy her story that she had been having a nightmare about horse burgers. Now Paul is a typical motor cycle man. He is a sort of scaled down version of Grizzly Adams; a lifelong Harley Davidson fan and in his younger day would have been a ringer for Dennis Hopper in that iconic bikers movie – Easy Rider. I on the other hand have nothing remotely Rocker or Peter Fonda about me and I find it hard to stay upright in a moderate breeze. I had not ridden pillion on a powerful motor cycle with multiple cc’s between my legs for many years, when one of my pals owned a relatively tame 250cc Matchless. He liked to show off by opening the
thing up to the max past the main gate of HMS Dauntless - a WRENS training camp in Burghfield near Reading. Eighty odd miles per hour and helmetless, it still gives me the heebies just thinking about it. And all my fears came to the fore, when Paul wheeled his bike into the street and proceeded to struggle to prevent it tipping over. Mmm? But I need not have worried. My friend has been riding these machines most of his life and it was just another one of his passing spells when he briefly forgets who he is and where he is at. Nothing to be concerned about he promised. Riding pillion is like riding a push bike, it’s something you never forget. Just so long as you go with the turns and the banking, and never panic by trying to stay upright when rider and bike are leaning over at a scary angle, everything will be fine. That’s all very well when you are in complete control, but as a passenger on one of those things, there is a definite tendency to lean the other way. Paul told me later that I was the perfect pillion passenger and he never even knew that I was there. To be honest there were a couple of occasions when I very nearly wasn’t, but I didn’t tell him that and just rose to the compliment. We had a pleasant lunch in a beachside restaurant, but conversation was
alqueria Remitbrick. The fallout John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu
In Polite Society
35
Of the countries vying to pour money into the Alquerian Remitbrick and Remitbright project the bulging pockets of the United States won the day. Russia couldn’t justify the same sustained level of investment. Britain supplied the pencil sharpeners which became scarce, a situation which was promptly exploited by unscrupulous stationary traders. ‘A good deal for Britain’ the Prime Minister said as he sharpened his pencil with a ‘Swiss Army Knife’. Remitbrick and Remitbright were manufactured under license in the United States and a showcase village built. Remitbrick with its integral climate control, heating in cool conditions and cooling in the warm weather alleviated the necessity for air-conditioning. Remitbright with the capacity to emit photons during the hours of darkness kept a permanent glow in the house’s reception rooms. Trouble was however brewing. The greed of Poyato and others in Alqueria led to a falsifying of test results from the trials of Remitbrick and Remitbright. Underdevelopment was inevitable as the Alquerian Government eagerly anticipated the arrival of 10,000,000 U.S. Dollars for the production rights. Connedborough County in the deep west of the United States was the chosen site for the showcase village, Remitville. Completed and occupied during the Autumn, several months before the cold winter weather took hold. It was the cold weather that produced the first unfortunate sideeffect of the new building material. Remitbright the photon emitting
ceiling covering was never tested below 0C. At -1C it emitted fumes which when inhaled caused the unlucky tenants to forget their names and have unscheduled bowel movements. The village was evacuated. It was still empty as the summer sun caressed Remitville, which was fortunate for at a temperature of 31C Remitbrick, the thermal wonder spontaneously explodes. If one was ready for the sight of an entire village exploding it would be awe inspiring. If one was not ready it would cause even more bowels to move. The United States asked for their money back. Unable to justify a 10,000,000 Dollar hole in the ground they sought recompense. The good folk of Alqueria briefly refused. Only briefly as a U.S. Warship was deployed within missile range. To the casual observer it may seem that a cruise missile strike on Alqueria would cause much needed improvements. The Alquerian people however are not noted for their valour, the threat did the trick. They reluctantly handed over the cash. Rodriquez the olive mill owner was particularly upset owing to him having to cancel the purchase of a solid gold combined back scratcher and garlic press. With Alqueria off the United State’s Christmas card list and the import of Remitroot products banned, events had taken a distinctly unpleasant turn.
difficult - yelling at each other like two market traders above the noise of the other diners. No prizes for guessing what nationality most of them were. Then after a brief ride further up the beach, we stopped off at a surfer’s bar that Paul knew about. I ordered coffee and brandy and Paul – observing his strict rule when out on the bike – just coffee. I was so lost in admiration for a man with such will power, that I ordered another large brandy and hoped I wouldn’t embarrass him by falling off on the way home.

Trolley Day
Nearly 600 million Euros a year! Can you believe it? That’s how much the theft of shopping trolleys around the world costs the retail industry each year. Quite why anyone in their right mind would want to steal a shopping trolley is something beyond my comprehension; most of them have only three wheels that work properly so they go in a permanent zigzag direction, even before you get to the section selling the wine! Apart from the why question, how anyone steals one is a real mystery, surely you’d be more than a little conspicuous pushing a trolley, miles from your local supermarket? Hardly done undercover is it? If it’s true that so many are stolen we may well ask, what happens to them after that? Well you use them for Shopping Trolley Day of course! In New Orleans they have Shopping Trolley Day-though they call it Shopping Cart Day. On the designated day people push their trolleys, which are generally full of going to your head juice, down a predetermined route Graham is married to the finish. Hmm, not to Helen and has a very interesting day, a daughter, Alice. but as some people He lives part of the apparently don’t make year near Albox, but works in Qatar, it to the end, as a result teaching. If you wish of taking on board to contact Graham too many varieties regarding this of grown up cordial, article email: perhaps doesn’t helenandg@yahoo. it matter too much for co.uk
the participants! I’m not sure that when the owner of the Piggly Wiggly store in Oklahoma introduced the first shopping trolley in 1937 he imagined that there would be such a celebration of his work in the 21st Century. But then, if we can have a world that brings us celebrations like The Nutters Dance-yes it really does happen, in Bacup Lancashire- or the Shin Kicking Contest, then why not celebrate the trolley? I’d be first to the pub to watch highlights of that Shin Kicking Competition . Maybe they should introduce it to parliaments around the world as a way of resolving disagreements! So, let’s celebrate everyday things that we take for granted. How about having Bus Stop Day, well why not? We’ve all used them at one time or another and let’s face it, the poor things are very much forgotten. Well, at least since The Hollies had a hit about one in 1966. I think we should campaign for Bus Stops to be brought into the 21st Century, with all modern technology and even-now here’s an interesting thought-a bus or two now and again!
El refugio - Almeria City
Many foreign inhabitants and visitors know Almeria City just for its airport. Whether on the red eye from Gatwick or via another UK route, many arrive only to scuttle off to their homes or holiday destinations without wondering about what else is on offer. The City has a beautiful old quarter with excellent restaurants, tapas bars, art galleries and museums. Stunning architecture abounds, topped by the Moorish Alcazaba towering above. The Paseo de Almeria is a broad tree lined boulevard; running from the port to Plaza Purchena it’s filled with chain stores and boutiques. It’s the commercial hub of the city with some curious black news stand kiosks dotted along the way. Another world however lies hidden the surface and the kiosks have trap doors leading 3metres and deeper below ground. At Plaza Purchena for the grand sum of 2€ the intrepid will learn more. The entrance to El Refugio is a modern glass building with a suspended
there were also entrances in private homes and churches. A black flag was put outside for easy recognition. The designer of the tunnels; architect William Rubio had one such entrance at his home for the public plus he built an extra gallery so his family had some private space. Other wealthy families also did this. When Malaga fell to the fascists in 1937, 50,000 refugees fled on foot towards Almeria. The German Luftwaffe or Condor Legion practiced their strafing techniques shooting at the unarmed civilians killing and injuring hundreds of them. In response Almeria then built another section containing an operating theatre which can still be seen today. After the Civil War ended in 1939, the tunnels remained open in case Spain was drawn into WWII. Then in 1945 the entrances were sealed with some entrances covered by the aforementioned kiosks. In 2001they were rediscovered by accident during the construction of an underground car park. The city started renovations aiming to open in time for the Mediterranean games in 2005. Instead they opened the next year in 2006, being now the City’s third most popular tourist attraction. Booking is advisable as due to space constraints only a maximum of 25 people are allowed on each of the 4 daily tours. Or try your luck, as we did and got lucky!

glass floor so the foundations of ancient Moorish walls can be seen. Here the story unfolds firstly via a short film, interviews with now elderly locals tell the story of how when the Civil War erupted in 1936, the city council along with help from the Republican Government set about designing and constructing an air raid shelter large enough to hold 40,000 people. During the war German, Italian and Nationalists conducted 52 bombing raids, the most devastating of which killed 40, injured 150 and destroyed 200 buildings. An original staircase leads down beneath the glass building to a passageway some 1.3 metres wide with a bench running along one side. Supposedly there were 101 of these exits but only 67 have been discovered. The passageway is one of many feeder passages into the main tunnel that extends the whole length of the Paseo de Almeria; the main tunnel is 2m wide with benches each side and extends about a kilometre towards the port. Originally they were dirt floors with smoking prohibited. A generator provided light and there was a system for pumping clean air in. Directly beneath the city market is a much deeper section that served as food store, so in case of a prolonged bombardment supplies could easily be moved below. Along with street entrances
TV
Is it actually worth it?
This type of question is always fraught with controversy, if for no other reason than it, by definition, has to be a personal choice. It doesn’t matter what my opinion is regarding this subject, the fact remains that we all have personal preferences. So, not being one to shy away from controversy, loud mouthed bullies and the intellectually challenged, Here goes nothing! This line of thought started a couple of months ago when I was asked to deliver a talk, to the Albox Computer Club regarding the imminent loss of English TV as a results of the changing satellite situation, and what alternatives are currently available. This was followed up by a discussion on the possible down sides of Internet based TV and why, in reality, we, the paying public, should not be too worried. Recently, I was invited to a friend’s home to watch a demonstration by one of an ever increasing number of internet TV sales-persons. Two points to make absolutely clear: 1) I will not advertise anyone’s business apart from my own and 2) I will not tell you “Joe Bloggs Internet Service” or any other individual’s product or service is crap! You will have to find that out for yourselves – Sorry! Having set out the rules let’s get on with the observations. The people who kindly offered the demonstration on the Tuesday morning were surprisingly honest and didn’t “Hard Sell” the product – a very good start! The device was about the size of a cigarette packet but contained a fully working Android (an Operating System similar to Linux – another topic for another day) computer! These devices start at 35 – 40€. Research indicates that these boxes are in the region of 60€ each. The people selling them, were doing so at 160€. Before you get up in arms about the 100€ mark-up bear in mind that hundreds of hours have gone into finding EXACTLY was was
required to bring the box, software and internet tv addresses together in a single usable bundle. These people were lovely and if I were ready to buy one of these devices as a result of the sales people, I would have one right now! As part of studying the device in preparing to give the next talk I have come across the same problems, and solutions, as everyone else who is in the process of setting up internet TV. The technical understanding required to bring these varied components together, is not too difficult to acquire, but do we want to do it? This brings me back, quite nicely, to personal choices. Today’s advice to anyone interested in internet TV, the technologies and therefore the costs involved is simply this: 1) The most expensive will be, at best, a status symbol and might not be the best product for your needs! 2) The cheapest will invariable be exactly that, but if it fulfils your needs, then go for it. 3) Learn by other peoples mistakes and don’t repeat them. 4) There is always more than one way to skin a cat! I truly hope that this may be some use to anyone looking for a satellite alternative and that you find exactly what you need, at the price that’s right and you have many happy years of sticking 2 fingers up at the BBC licensing department. One final thought, and this is the MOST IMPORTANT one – Internet TV is Free! No Monthly Bills, No Connection Fees and NO BRIT’S RIPPING OFF BRIT’S! Can someone help me off this soapbox please? See you on Friday 1200 til 1600 at Jacks Bar. I’ll be in the dining room wearing a pink carnation.

MOTORING
“Now, this is a snazzy little car,” says my wife Caroline as we sit in the Citroen C1 Connexion.
(it uses the same floorpan and bodyshell) has a five speed manual gearbox and a 998cc petrol engine. You would be forgiven for thinking that this makes for a pretty dull car but because it is so light, just 805kg, it is possible to reach 60mph from standstill in a shade over 12 seconds and onto a top speed of 98mph. Very reasonable figures. Obviously when there are four adults inside, these results are hampered somewhat as they are when strong winds pick up, as they do in the test. Then there is the 65mpg (combined) figure, which is better than some diesels. At tick over the engine is audible from inside and there is a slight judder but my wife quickly reminds me that this is a massive improvement on her cherished Hyundai Pony; sadly deceased. It is possible to squeeze a pushchair into the tiny boot or a week’s worth of shopping but not both at the same time. The only criticism I have, which I admit is partly my fault, is that if your hands slip from the ten-to-two position on the steering wheel it is all too easy to sound the horn, which has occurred on a number of occasions, frightening the motorist in front and embarrassing me. While this five-door hatchback is finished to a good standard there is no denying that this is a bit of a tin can. I shut the rear door a little too enthusiastically and I fear that if I do it any harder it might change shape. The seats are comfy although the driver’s seat could do with a little more padding in the lumbar region. Parking is a cinch due to its size. The rear windows are fitted with rear privacy glass and rather than winding up or down the rear passenger windows pop out for opening.
I can see why she instantly warms to it because it is a very girlie car with its lipstick red wing mirrors and door handles and its striking black finish. No sooner have I started driving it and another model exactly the same passes me with a young lady driving it. Unashamed I carry on regardless of the lipstick red edged rev counter, speedometer and door trim… It is a very compact city car and surprisingly there is a good amount of legroom in the front and back, which puts competitors like the Fiat 500 to shame. Despite its blatantly female characteristics (as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz) if the hard-nosed male motorist sticks with it, it provides a good driving experience. Yes, you’ll have to ignore the sympathetic stares from macho motorists in their Range Advanced motorist Rovers and Mercedes Tim Saunders is the former and the ‘sweetie’ from Business and Motoring Editor of the the effeminate assistant Bournemouth Daily Echo. His regular test reports appear in numerous at the garage forecourt. newspapers, magazines and websites “It’s my wife’s car,” I throughout the UK, Ireland & Gibraltar mumble. Get over that - and now here in Spain! For more and this Peugeot 107 information contact Tim on: timasaunders@tiscali.co.uk by any other name
But there’s more to this dashboard than at first meets the eye because there are four simple buttons arranged in the shape of a coin on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. These are actually part of what the industry calls black box technology. One button will call a call centre and you can tell them where you want to go and then spoken directions will be provided throughout the course of your journey. Another switch patches you through to Citroen Assist breakdown service. It’s also possible to make a 999 call through this system as well as connecting you directly to your Citroen insurance. But this black box will also record erratic driving behaviour and feed it back to the insurance company as a way of keeping insurance premiums lower for well behaved young drivers. This technology isn’t infallible because sharp braking for instance could be the result of reacting to others’ bad driving. During our drive my wife and I recall the time we hired a Peugeot 107 and drove it from Romania to Bulgaria and back. We had fun in that car and if my memory serves me right we were able to drive from one country to the next on just one tank of fuel. That’s how efficient the 1-litre unit is. Caroline says that this is the car she would buy if ever she chose to replace her P-registered Fiat Punto. Praise indeed.

Boxers 2013 2014 may not be looming over the hill just yet (despite Xmas advertisements starting to appear) but Boxers golfing year, under the captaincy of Derek Leonard, has run its course. The final salute was played out at Hacienda del Alamo on the 7th Oct with a presentation dinner at the Hostal Rural in Turre on the 12th. An eventful year saw us lose our Captain Elect, Steve Gilmore, to a heart attack and our Founding President to Blighty – both are missed. But the upside has been another year of lively competition played at courses all over Almeria and Murcia, plus a fantastic range of social events, from Treasure hunts to night time golf to bowling to meals out, well supported and enjoyed by the members both on and off the course. Cash prizes are awarded to divisional winners, NTP’s, etc at the regular meetings and, with a range of talent across the society, it’s pleasing to note that this year’s ‘Pot Hunters’ for the major competitions come from all three divisions. The Alan Hay Trophy – Gordon Batchelor (Div 3) Doubles Competition - Paul Holley & Steeve
Peete (Div 1) Captain’s Eclectic and also the Autumn Trophy Adrian Ball (Div 2) Matchplay singles – Paul Holley Spring Trophy – Martin Fisk (Div 1) Les Ashton Shield – Tony Redston (Div 1) 2013 Order of Merit – Tony Harwin (Div 1) The new season starts under the captaincy of Adrian Ball, whose declared intention is to introduce some new courses, including a trip to Santa Clara in Granada´into an exciting calendar of golf and social events. All of the longer distance trips come with the luxury option of travelling by coach at a subsidised €10 per head.

• It’s all about European football this week with Champions League matches played yesterday and again tonight, and Europa League encounters tomorrow. • Top soccer games this coming weekend are: Villa-Everton, Chelsea-Manchester City, Crystal Palace-Arsenal, Liverpool-WBA, Manchester United-Stoke and Sunderland-Newcastle (the TyneWear derby); Blackpool-Blackburn and Burnley-QPR (Championship) and unbeaten Leyton OrientRotherham (FL1). • Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel should win the F1 World title for the fourth successive year in India on Sunday. • Also on Sunday, either Marc Marquez (298 pts) or Jorge Lorenzo (280) can clinch the MotorGP championship in Japan. Marquez is still favourite despite Lorenzo winning a most confusing Australian Grand Prix last Sunday, when Marquez was disqualified for failing to make a pit stop! Dani Pedrosa was second with Valentino Rossi third. • The opening ceremony of the Rugby League World Cup takes place in Cardiff on Saturday. • Despite winning their qualifying group, England will NOT be seeded when the draw is made for the 2014 World Cup on 6 December. Therefore they could well meet Argentina, Brazil, even Spain early in the competition. • England manager Roy Hodgson has arranged several friendlies before Rio, starting with back-toback Wembley games next month against Chile and Germany. • Last weekend, PL leaders Arsenal beat Norwich; Liverpool, with Steven Gerrard’s 100th top-flight goal) drew at Newcastle; Chelsea defeated Cardiff; Everton pipped Hull; Southampton drew at Manchester United; Manchester City won at West Ham; Spurs beat Aston Villa (where an assistant referee/linesman was struck by a flare thrown by a Spurs supporter) and Swansea belted Sunderland, while Stoke and WBA drew and Crystal Palace played Fulham on Monday. • The derbies between Millwall-QPR (Championship) and Wolves-Coventry (FL1) both ended in draws. • Plymouth, making football’s longest return journey, a 754 mile round trip to Hartlepool, lost, while Celtic and Rangers are running away with the SPL and SL1 respectively. • Last Friday, 61,418 rugby union fans at Wembley (a Heineken Cup pool game record) saw Toulouse beat Saracens. • For all cricket enthusiasts, here are the dates of England’s five Tests against the Aussies are: 1st - 2125 November (Brisbane); 2nd - 5-9 December (Adelaide); 3rd - 13-17 December (Perth); 4th - 26-30 December (Melbourne); 5th - 3-7 January (Sydney). • The funeral of Spain’s F1 reserve driver Maria Del Villota, found dead in a hotel room in Seville earlier this month, took place last week. Maria (33) lost her right eye after crashing in July 2012 while testing a car for Team Marussia. Subsequent neurological damage led to her death. R.I.P. • In the European indoor track cycling championships in Holland, GB riders Jason Kenny, Jess Varnish, Laura Trott (two gold) and Jo Rownsell have all won medals, with to come! • Football fact: Only four midfielders have scored 100 goals in the Premiership: Frank Lampard (166), Ryan Giggs (109), Paul Scholes (107), Steven Gerrard (100).

By end twelve Trevor and Paul had caught up to within two shots. Then on the thirteenth end Pat and Brian scored a five , this seemed to seal
the result and the game finished with Trevor and Paul having 8 shots to Brian and Pat’s 20. Well played to both teams for giving the spectators an extremely good final. Congratulations to Pat and Brian really well played. Photo l.to r. Brian Marsh and Pat Marsh. Winners of the Hong Kong Pairs 2013.

‘Pugwash Pete’ went out with mates Phil and John and the sea conditions were perfect with a slight swell. They started jigging outside the harbour wall in about 100 feet of water and caught straight away with weavers and small mackerel. Phil also had a nice little striped tuna.
Good to see ‘Cuba Brian’ back in Spain and his boat back in the water and working. Shore Fishing ‘London Bill’ caught only mackerel this week spinning marks around Garrucha, Mojacar and Macenas. Six members of the Albox Fishing Club fished off the Repsol garage rocks in Garrucha from 11am to 4 pm. The sea was very calm with a southerly breeze. Fish caught : Jaguar Jack - 10 Bogues, 4 palometes, 2 wide eyed flounders, 2 striped bream and a weaver. He had a good fish on but lost it in the rocks. Tony Always Laughing - 8 Bogues 4 palometes, 2 wide eyed flounder, 1 wrasse and 1 weaver. Dizzy John - 8 Bogues, 2 palometes and 2 wide eyed flounders. Flash Gordon - 6 Bogues, 1 palometes, 1 wide eyed flounder and 1 weaver.
Coarse Fishing. ‘Baza Barry’ continued his efforts on a river north of Negratin and caught small trout and barbel. He also caught a black bass while spinning, an unusual catch as far as I know in a river here (stream). Saying that they are in the lakes so it’s not surprising a few find their way into the rivers. Two matches in Murcia were won with top weights of 33lbs and 21lbs. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. Latest license information: There is a problem at the moment with foreigners getting Andalucian beach and boat licenses. A new program has been introduced and NIE numbers are not being recognised, only NIF numbers. Although I have only heard this from one source and one licensing office I suspect it will be countrywide, I’ll let you know when things change.
