HAVE PETS NEUTERED

PAWS-Patas, the Mojácar-based animal charity, has launched a campaign to promote the neutering of all pets, unless owners specifically want to breed from them. Neutering by a qualified vet is safe, and the animals remain healthy and happy afterwards. But PAWS has had 125 unwanted puppies dumped outside

the dog shelter this year up to midAugust. That number is sure to rise considerably by the end of the year. The much smaller cattery has had an equally difficult time, taking in 30 kittens and numerous adult cats. Over the summer they have been able to ease some of the pressure by having many of them fostered, but in September those animals will have to come back and numbers will rise again to considerably more than the cattery was designed to house. For the dogs the situation remain acute. “PAWS was founded as a society to protect maltreated and genuine stray animals” said PAWS spokesperson Mike Dornan. “Our aim to find them proper, loving and permanent homes. But we can’t concentrate on that work if we are

overwhelmed by having to deal with so many puppies simply dumped by existing dog owners. Having animals neutered would avoid this whole problem.” PAWS volunteer Anneli Löftstrom began an educational programme in the spring, visiting local schools to explain the work PAWS does and talk about animal welfare issues in general. “We are hoping by targeting the next generation of Spanish adults we can help to change some of the attitudes which have traditionally been held in this part of Spain, said Anneli.” All PAWS animals homed through its shelter are neutered automatically. The Cat Section has been running an independent neutering programme for feral cats for nearly 20 years, neutering 120-150 cats each year. This has made a major contribution to reducing the colonies of feral cats living wild on the streets of Mojacar and neighbouring towns. “PAWS has had discussions with local ayuntamientos and the Mancomunidad, agreeing on the benefit, need, and commitment to neutering” said PAWS President Karen Polansky. “Now we just need to get the public to join us as well. An animal protection society, run by volunteers and funded almost entirely by public donations, should be more than just a dumping ground!”

Staff at Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez Barajas airport have called a strike for the last weekend of August to protest the privatization of Spain’s stateowned airport operator. AENA staff called off their initial strike for August 15th and 17th but have now decided to hold it from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st. CGT-Aena, the trade union representing the disgruntled airport workers, has sent out out a press release arguing that their call for negotiations with Spain’s Ministry of Public Works and Barajas authorities had fallen on deaf ears. Last June, Spain’s government announced it had agreed to sell a 49-percent stake in the state-owned

airport operator, a move CGT argues will put the country’s tourism industry “at great risk” and have a “negative impact” on flight security. The group claims they fear jobs, especially temporary ones, may be lost under private management and demand that Spain’s airports remain “financially, and socially sustainable”. According to Spanish news agency Europa Press, Barajas airport staff have announced they will strike from 3pm to 8pm on the 29th and from 7am to 10am and then 8pm to 12pm on Sunday 31st. Saturday’s strike hours have not yet been officially confirmed. Source: The Local

Robin Williams and Ebola

The day the headlines appeared in all the papers about Robin Williams sad death, I overheard a couple say something along the lines it was disgusting that one man’s death should take precedence over the death of over 1000 people from the Ebola outbreak. My gut instinct was to agree with them, but then I thought a little more deeply about the issue. The death of 1000 plus Ebola victims of is dreadful, as are the deaths of thousands of people in conflicts all round the world which seem so much a part of our daily lives at the moment. However, as individuals, we are totally incapable of changing or affecting any of this regardless of our humanity and feelings. The headlines, at best, make us feel hopeless and useless as individuals, and at worst angry and frustrated, neither feeling changing anything on the ground. However, we are in a position to make powerful and positive changes from Robin Williams’s sad death. Despite being a comic genius and gifted actor, a man who in films like “Good morning Vietnam” could make us laugh and cry almost at the same moment, he still felt lonely and depressed. What about all the people around you right now, not famous or rich, just normal? For example, what about that little old lady two doors down you haven’t seen for several days; a classmate or colleague who seems to be behaving differently; the old man sitting on a bench looking out to sea for hours; the lady sitting drinking endless cups of coffee in the cafe; or the young lad who gets falling down drunk every night, or just drinking alone? If you are worried about anyone, a friend, colleague or family member they may really appreciate you asking how they are. Talking about a problem is never easy. If it’s really bad, what can you say? You don’t have to be able to solve their problem, or even to completely understand it, but listening to what they have to say will at least let them know you care. Sometimes people often want to talk, but we just don’t realise. Fortunately,

people do put out signals. Sometimes they are very tentative signals, but the signs are often there if we know what to look for. Here are some ways that people signal that they may need help: * Being irritable or nervous. * A change in routine, such as sleeping or eating less than normal. * Drinking, smoking or using drugs more than usual. * Being untypically clumsy or accident-prone. * Becoming withdrawn or losing touch with friends and family. * Losing interest in their appearance. For example dressing badly, no longer wearing make-up or not washing regularly. * Making leading statements, such as ‘You wouldn’t believe what I’ve been through’ or ‘It’s like the whole world is against me’. People sometimes say these things in the hope you will ask them what they mean, so that they can talk about it. * Putting themselves down in a serious or jokey way, for example ‘Oh, no one loves me’, or ‘I’m a waste of space’ You probably don’t know how to help, but often just listening is all that is needed. Beyond that you could guide them towards more professional help, such as a priest, doctor, nurse, counsellor, therapist, mentor, confidant, close friends, and so many other ways. Less intrusively, there are services such as Samaritans in Spain who offer a free totally confidential listening service by phone on 902 88 35 35, by email on pat@samaritansinspain. com or at their shop and drop-in centre at Punta Marina Centre. Their motto is “You talk, we listen” so your friend would just need to do that, just talk. Nothing can change the horror of so many horrendous deaths around the world, and nothing can change the sad loss of such a gifted actor. But perhaps the most fitting monument to him would be to celebrate his life, his comic genius and be thankful for the joy he has given us in the past, and to allow his sad death to look more deeply around us and to help others.

For just a few hundred euros you can pick up a plot of land in Spain’s beautiful Cuenca province. Is there a catch, you ask? You’ll probably have to put up with being the youngest person in the village. With an average age of 75, Olmeda de la Cuesta’s 35 residents have officially made their village the place with the oldest population in Spain. Only 15 of them live there throughout the year, the local school closed down 40 years ago and even their mayor doesn’t live there. So why would anyone even contemplate living in this desolate hamlet in Spain’s arid Castilla and La Mancha region? A fresh start, and a cheap one at that. Olmeda de la Cuesta’s mayor José Luis Regacho announced recently he will be offering up large plots of land in the

village for as little as €600 ($800), or around the price of an Apple iPhone 5c. The only requirement he expects buyers to fulfill is either that they build a house or set up a business within the next two years and a half. “The current global economy can allow anyone to manufacture products here and sell them in Madrid, it’s just 160 kilometres (100 miles) away,” Regacho, who was born in the village, told Spanish TV channel La Sexta. Potential buyers won’t have to register at the local town hall and only have to pay a €150 deposit. Olmeda de la Cuesta has been fighting off extinction for several years now, dropping their initial €2,000 minimum investment to the current €600 due to the campaign’s limited success. Robots could take half of jobs in Spain More than half of the jobs currently being done in Spain could be taken over by robots in the next 20 years, according to a think-tank. The study from Brussels think-tank Bruegel found 55.3 percent of jobs in Spain at the moment could be computerized and left to robots in the next two decades. European countries most at risk from this computerization were Romania (62 percent) and Portugal (59 percent). The exact effect this could have on unemployment rates is unclear because as technology takes over, new jobs are created, meaning those who lose their work to robots will not necessarily become unemployed. “Technology is likely to dramatically

reshape labour markets in the long run and to cause reallocations in the types of skills that the workers of tomorrow will need,” Jeremy Bowles of Bruegel wrote about his study last week. “To mitigate the risks of this reallocation it is important for our educational system to adapt.” A study published in September last year caused a stir when it listed the jobs in the USA most at risk to robots. The study calculated how at risk jobs were of computerization by identifying three things which hinder robots potentially taking over the job – creative intelligence, social intelligence and perception and manipulation tasks. Telemarketers (at a 99 percent risk), clerks, referees and credit analysts

were among the jobs most likely to be taken over by robots, while those least at risk included recreational therapists, social workers and doctors. “I find it hard to believe robots can do telemarketing jobs,” Konstantin Appelt, CEO of Call Centre Barcelona, told The Local. “It’s been tried before already and

it failed. People don’t want to talk to machines, they just hang up straight away.” The Bruegel think-tank took this data from the 2013 study which was based on USA employment figures and applied it to Europe to find out how at risk European countries were. Why do I need my chimney swept? .

There are 3 basic reasons why you should get your chimney swept 1 To protect your health, Breathing in the fumes from gas or solid fuel fires can cause serious damage to your health and in the worse cases prove fatal. Having your chimney swept will help make sure that the flue is sufficiently clear to allow the dangerous fumes to escape safely out of the chimney. 2 To avoid chimney fires, Having your chimney swept regularly will drastically reduce the chances of having a chimney fire. Chimney fires can cause p r o p e r t y damage the least usually being a cracked chimney pot. Which will need to be replaced and the worst being you could lose your home! Fortunately, the more extreme outcome does not happen very often, but it does happen. 3 To avoid smoke damage,

Each time the fire is used, soot will accumulate up the chimney. Gradually, this will decrease the size of the flue which in turn, will lower the draw of the smoke upwards. If the chimney does not have enough pull, the smoke will enter into the room, not only causing irritation to you, but can also blacken your fireplace or the decoration above Read more on: www. stroudchimneysweeps. co.uk

demand for therapy dogs has been growing. In recent years and have also been enlisted to help children overcome speech and emotional disorders. LASSIE, now called COOKIE will be the first candidate when she is two years old. She was originally adopted in Germany last year when she was a puppy. Her mistress soon noticed her calm, self-assured and affectionate nature combined with her ability to assimilate commands with great ease. COOKIE has passed preliminary tests and is already working with handicapped people. Another candidate to become a therapy dog is NAPOLEON, a seven month old PODENCO puppy. He has been in Germany just six weeks and has learned basic commands amazingly quickly. He has all the qualities needed to become a therapy dog. Meanwhile he is learning every day and at the same time is also enjoying life with his mistress who takes him for walks in the woods. He also accompanies her when she takes her horse out for a ride. These are two examples of the marvellous dogs at the shelter that need a forever home to develop their full potential and become great companions to their new owners. There are dogs of all shapes and sizes at the shelter, all eagerly waiting to show you just how loving and attentive they can be. Contact the shelter via Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail. com

Sustainable Mobility Plan Three dead in police Ready By December rescue helicopter crash By Martin Shortland

Long in the planning, longer in the preparation, the visionary plan to implement a transport system for the future, could be ready by the end of the year. The Plan is a wide reaching document, including proposals for the ‘recovery of public space for the citizens of the municipality.’ The mayor, Gabriel Amat has put his personal support behind the scheme from its inception almost two years ago. Also of some significance are the plans for the control and management of traffic movement and parking, especially around the town centre. The document states it is the intention of the planners to radically change the interaction between pedestrians and motorised traffic in large areas of the community, to make for ‘a more peaceful and tranquil environment’ for people to move around in. Bicycle riders will be very encouraged with the section devoted to their cause. Readers may remember my report in June, covering a large demonstration by over 200 people, wanting better facilities for bicycle parking and bike riding in general. The event was also covered by the local TV channel Canalsur and received a lot of reaction across the region. The wording is very strong, saying for too long the needs for the ever growing population of bike riders have been ignored. Although the council is rightly proud of the network of bicycle paths, especially along the promenade, they now intend to increase all of those facilities. The network of bike routes is to be expanded to reach from the urbanisation as far as Aguadulce, incorporating many of the urban areas of the town and port. Bicycle parking was one of the main complaints voiced at the demonstration in June. The fact that the council had recently introduced a new by-law prohibiting cyclists from taking their bikes onto the beach was felt by many to be adding insult to injury. People only take their machines onto the beach because there is no provision made by the council for parking them. The numbers of bicycle thefts reported from beach side locations is very high. This will all change with the installation of a ‘substantial amount’ of customised parking bays throughout the network, where ‘bicycle owners can safely and securely’ leave their machines, ‘without fear of theft.’ Making public transport more accessible by improving passenger stops and frequency of departures is also a priority taken up in the plan. Working closely with the bus service

providers ALDA, the council hope to make ‘significant improvements to an already impressive’ public transport service. By improving the public transport system, they hope to persuade car owners not to be so dependent on their vehicles. Accessibility for disabled passenger is also seen as a high priority in making the public transport system, ‘more usable for all.’ Environmental quality is given a lot of coverage in the report, with ever increasing concerns over vehicle emissions and so called ‘urban pollution.’ Greater emphasis will be placed on penalising vehicle with high emission levels – this will include, private vehicles, public transport vehicles and most importantly, according to the report, delivery vehicles. It says, ‘the movement and distribution of goods is vital to our economy, but we must address the problems of urban pollution by many of the vehicles involved.’ Spot checks will be increased to catch vehicles with high emission levels and fines for breaking the law will be made substantially higher. It says, ‘we must make it clear to frequent road users that their vehicles must sit within the legal requirements of the laws of the land.’ This falls within a wider category of road safety, but is considered by the report to be one and the same. The safety of all road users must become an even higher priority and consideration will be given to implementing some far reaching changes to the road network. The study says the municipality has a good road safety record, but is aware of the fact that road use is increasing dramatically every year. It says, ‘with increased road use, comes the increased threat of danger to road users.’ The document states clearly how it intends to lay out the road safety plans for the next 25 years. The overall plan will be broken down into a two, four and eight year period when various elements will be carried out. The next – and possibly most important – part of the plan will be ‘How Much?’ No mention has been made of the cost; we’ll await that announcement with baited breath.

A Spanish police helicopter flying to rescue a mountain climber with a broken ankle crashed on Sunday, killing all three crew members on board, emergency services said. The helicopter’s blades struck the side of a mountain close to the Picos de Europa range in the northwestern province of Leon. The aircraft then slid down the rock face, regional emergency services said in a statement. Two Guardia Civil pilots and a member of a mountain rescue team died in the accident, it said. A fourth member of the rescue team who had already exited the helicopter to search for the injured climber sounded the alarm, a spokesman said. Emergency services, including three helicopters and an ambulance, were

dispatched to the scene and found the bodies of all three men, aged 48, 50 and 56. The cause of the accident is under investigation but Spanish media reported that the area was engulfed in fog at the time. The injured climber was transported to hospital by another police helicopter. Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz has gone to the scene of the accident, the ministry said. The Picos de Europa range, although not the highest in Spain, is a favourite among walkers, trekkers and climbers. It is considered to be one of Europe’s most challenging mountain ranges, with changable weather and treacherous terrain full of chasms and gorges. Source: The Local

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. Shingles usually affects a specific area on one side of the body and does not cross over the midline of the body (an imaginary line running from between your eyes down past the belly button). The main symptom is a

painful rash that develops into itchy blisters that contain particles of the virus. An episode of shingles typically lasts around two to four weeks, although around one in five people go on to develop nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia in the affected area of skin. When to seek medical advice Shingles is not usually serious, but you should see your Doctor as soon as possible if you recognise the symptoms. Early treatment may help reduce the severity of your symptoms and the risk of developing complications. You should also see your Doctor if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system (the body’s natural defence system) and you think you have been exposed to someone with chickenpox or shingles and haven’t had chickenpox before. Your Doctor will usually be able to diagnose shingles based on your symptoms and the appearance of the rash.. What causes shingles? Most people have chickenpox in childhood, but after the illness has gone, the virus remains dormant (inactive) in the nervous system. The immune system keeps the virus in check, but later in life it can be reactivated and cause shingles. It is not known exactly why the shingles virus is reactivated at a later stage in life, but most cases are thought to be caused by having lowered immunity (protection against infections and diseases). This may be the result of: • being older • being stressed •t aking medication that weakens your immune system • a condition that affects your immune system, such as HIV or AIDS It is not possible to catch shingles from someone with the condition or from someone with chickenpox, but you can catch chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had it before. It is possible to have shingles more than once, but it’s very rare to get it more than twice. Who is affected? Shingles can occur at any age, but is most common in people who are over the age of 70. It is much less common in children. It’s estimated that around one in every four people will have at least one episode of shingles during their life. How shingles is treated There is no cure for shingles, but treatment is available to relieve the symptoms until the condition resolves. Most cases of shingles last around two to four weeks. Treatment for shingles can include: • covering the rash with clothing or a non-adherent (non-stick) dressing to reduce the risk of other people becoming infected with chickenpox, as it is very difficult to pass the virus on to someone else if the rash is covered • painkilling medication, such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or codeine • antiviral medication to stop the virus multiplying, although not everyone will need this Almeria Angels

SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014

braben’s blog...

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today we are going to take a walk through the process of removing those nasty little browser hijackers. Firstly. What is a browser hijacker? Secondly. How did they get there? Lastly. How do we remove them? The first 2 are reasonably simple and shouldn’t take long but the 3rd is a “how to” and will take a little longer. First – What is a browser hijacker? This is where your web browser’s settings are modified. The term “hijacking” is used as the changes are performed without your permission. A browser hijacker may replace the existing home page, error page, or search page with its own. Generally these changes are used to force hits to a particular website, increasing its advertising revenue. Second – How did they get there? This is usually done by a program that you are ‘encouraged’ to download along side something that you actually want! The homepages that are set by hijackers are often search pages, and many of these programs are ‘Spyware’ programs that track personal data. Most installers will give users the opportunity to accept or decline an offer to install a hijacker; however, the request to decline the offer is often ignored or presented in a very confusing manner. This is done for the sole reason of tricking you into installing excessive ‘Bloatware’ and ‘Malware’. Lastly – How to get rid of them! Some browser hijacking can be easily reversed, while other instances may be difficult to reverse. The simple ones (and I hope that this is the kind you get IF you have to get any!) simply alters the browser’s setting in the ‘Home Page’ and ‘Search Page’ Settings and maybe the properties section of the ‘Shortcut Link’. These are so easy to resolve that the process is this: Open your browser (Firefox, IE, Chrome, etc.); Go to the settings (options) in the menu and find the ‘Home Page’ section, simply change it back to your usual ‘Home Page’. Repeat this process with your ‘search page’ as well. Finally left click over the browser icon

on your desktop and select ‘Properties’ from the ‘drop-down’ menu. Look at the name and if you see any of the unwanted web sites in the name – just highlight them and hit the ‘Delete’ key. This will remove the simple type of hijacker from your computer. The next type are much more insidious as the changes are placed by a program, that you have been socially engineered to download, and is still active on your machine. You will know if this is the case because when you have done the simple ‘clean up’ and restarted your computer, the corrections will have been ‘over written’ back to the hijackers preferences as that is exactly what they are there for to prevent such modification. So let’s start the process: First get ‘MalwareBytes’; install it and run it and wait; and wait; and did I mention, wait? “All good things come to those that wait”, well in this case it is true! This program will remove nearly, if not all, those pesky little programs. A word of warning! When you have finished your first run at removing you will be advised to ‘Restart the computer’. Follow this advise and run it again and repeat until you get a result of ‘0 found’, because some of these little buggers take several attempts! You might find that there are those that will not be removed! The next level of attack ir to restart your computer in ‘Safe Mode’ and re-run the MalwareBytes program – your 98% hit rate will become 99.6% - 100%. If you don’t get 100% then some of these files use techniques that prevent them from being removed. At this point you might want to consider the help of someone that know (nearly) all the tricks :-) This week I spent 6 hours hunting down a particularly nasty little hijacking program before beating it! The computer was in Dutch which made it somewhat more difficult as I don’t, as yet, know any Dutch. So to my lovely Dutch and Belgique – I promise to try and learn a little of your language :-) I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! Maybe make a suggestion using the email address under this article for further article that will be useful to you.

Summer 1981, I was 14 going on 15 and just met my first ‘proper’ girlfriend Chloe. We lived 30 Kms apart which was nothing to my raging hormones so one extremely hot Sunday lunchtime I decided to cycle to her house. Water was for sissies in those days and I arrived some hours later verging on sunstroke. Hot, sweaty and partly delirious wasn’t the best way to be introduced to her mum and grandmother but I think my determination won them over. Chloe’s mum Jo was a classic hippie; a school teacher with flowing hair, flowing skirts and very tall. She simultaneously terrified and impressed me. At the end of the afternoon my bike was put in the back of her car and I was kindly dropped at Witley Station to catch the train back to Guildford. Thereafter Chloe and I would spend alternate weekends at each other’s houses. Whenever in Chiddingfold, a bucolic scene greeted me as the village is deep in the Surrey countryside. Their house was right on the cricket green and the thwack of willow on ball was heard on summer afternoons.

Technofuture - no thanks!

“What do you think you’re doing Dave?” Do you remember that, from 2001 A Space Odyssey when the computer wouldn’t let Dave back on the spaceship because he was trying to disconnect it? Scary and even more so now because it could soon be coming true. I’m already convinced that my computer has a mind of its own. Maybe you’ve experienced this too. No matter how many times I set the language to English UK, it decides to go back to English USA. I’ve changed it so many times that I’m almost at the point of either welding it into place or moving to New York, just so it stops with the red lines for spelling mistakes. Well, spelling is one thing, but actually taking over is another. There is speculation that, by 2050, the World Cup will be refereed by robots, either on the pitch or watching from the sidelines. Imagine, when the players surround the ref to complain, jolly nicely of course, about a decision that they feel a little irked at, instead of a red card, the ref could produce a vaporiser. In an instant it gets rid of a multitude of very rich chaps who, most of the time, are a downright embarrassment. Actually, this shift towards advanced technology taking over from humans has already happened. In Japan they have had an android reading the news. This thing looks almost real, but a bit plasticy, just like some of the celebrities do after they’ve had those plastic surgery abominations on their various bits and bobs. Do you think though, that there may be some advantages to having androids instead of people. After all, don’t we mess up big time occasionally? For example, in Los Angeles just last week a new parking sign informed motorists that they could only park for a limited time. Actually it was a very limited time because, instead of the sign saying 1 hour, it said 1 minute! Just enough time to get out of the car, put the money in the meter, then drive away! Yes, there are definitely so many ways that an android could improve things. But, then we wouldn’t have celebrities saying things like...”where’s the Cannes Film Festival being held this year?” Answers please on a postcard to Ms. Christina Aguilera! On reflection, maybe we’ll campaign to keep people, otherwise, what would there be to talk about ? Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

Evenings often meant a pub meal down at the Swan Inn with the locals taking the mickey of the two teenage lovebirds. In my formative years, I already had a love for music with Genesis, Police and Pink Floyd topping my list. Sunday at 5pm meant the Top 40 on Radio One. Each week like other teenagers across Britain, I carefully placed my trusty tape recorder next to the radio to record the most up to date tunes to replay them during the week. Chloe had a Dansette record player, it was like having a juke box as 45 rpm singles could be stacked on the spindle to drop down and play one by one. A whole 15 minutes could pass without having to get up and load it up again but the records got scratched to buggery. Jo being a hippy had great music taste and said that she’d recently been to a JJ Cale concert. The blank look on my face had her delving into her record collection and she played me his newly released album, the 1981 ‘Shades’. With the album cover beautifully reminiscent of a packet of Gauloises cigarettes this guy was cool. Then she played his 1976

album ‘Troubadour.’ JJ Cale had me hooked, languorous, laid back and yet so happy and alive. Soon I was adding JJ Cale to my own record collection. JJ Cale was born in Oklahoma in 1938 and grew up in Tulsa. In 1960 he moved to Los Angeles with some musician friends, all hoping to break into the music business. He worked as a sound engineer and by 1966 he’d funded the recording of six singles performing as Johnny Cale but none were initially successful. At the time there was another John Cale on the scene from Velvet Underground so he changed his name to JJ. Success eluded him at first and he returned to Tulsa. Then in 1970 he heard a cover of his 1966 single After Midnight being performed on the radio by Eric Clapton. Clapton had been recording his first solo album in the States with co-writers and producers Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. They’d played JJ Cales single to him and Clapton recorded it. At the time JJ Cale was in his early 30s and skint. The royalties transformed his life and meant

he could carry on recording music and keep out of the limelight. Clapton and JJ Cale became friends and in1980 Clapton recorded the track ‘Cocaine’ which is another JJ Cale composition. JJ Cale sadly died a year ago; Clapton has just released a wonderful tribute album featuring Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty and Willie Nelson amongst others – The Breeze!

I understand that they could sign an authorization to me for me to deal with the sale of their property when a purchaser has been found. If this is the case what do we need to do? Answer: Yes, it is perfectly possible for your parents to issue you with a power of attorney to deal with the sale of the property. To achieve this you would normally go to a solicitor, who will organize the signing at the notary of the necessary document. Your parents would need to assist at the notary with their passports and a translator (which would normally be organized by the solicitor). The solicitor will send the instructions (minuta) to the notary with the faculties that need to be included. Please note that the power of attorney cannot be used after the person that granted it has deceased. If your parents had already moved back to the u.k. then the solution would be a dual column , dual language power of attorney prepared by a Spanish solicitor in Spain that your parents could sign in front of a notary in the u.k. Before the document is valid in Spain it would need to have the Hague´s Apostille attached to it. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Spanish public debt tops €1 trillion-mark

Spain’s public debt has topped €1 trillion ($1.3 trillion) for the first time, the central bank announced, despite years of government-imposed austerity. The nation’s accumulated public debt mushroomed to €1.007 trillion at the end of June from €996 billion a month earlier, the Bank of Spain said in a report.

angry street protests. Though the annual deficits are on the decline, they continue to push up the sovereign debt of the eurozone’s fourth-largest economy. The public debt figure includes the cost of a €41 billion banking rescue in 2012 financed by Spain’s eurozone partners. The trillion-euro public debt figure is equal to 98.5 percent of Spain’s 2013 gross domestic product, a calculation by the news agency AFP showed. The Bank of Spain has yet to release final GDP figures for the second quarter of 2014. Spain enjoyed a relatively low debt ratio, equal to 36.3 per cent of GDP, in 2007. But the public debt soared after the implosion of a decade-long property bubble, which tipped the economy into a double-dip recession. Spain’s economy emerged from the latest two-year downturn in mid-2013 and grew in the second quarter of 2014 at a faster-than-expected quarterly rate of 0.6 per cent. The unemployment rate dipped below 25.0 per cent in the April-June period but still remains painfully high at 24.47 per cent. Spain’s public debt is expected to top 100 per cent of GDP next year – far above the 60 percent ceiling agreed among European Union members. Source: The Local

“The mind can play tricks on you. Sometimes people see things just because they want to see them.” Trailers have always been popular in promoting new films about to be released. The new trend in novels is to release a prequel or a parallel story to lead into the main novel. Writers seem to favour the ebook to promote their latest novel. Theo is a prequel to Light Shining in the Forest, a macabre tale of murder, child abduction and the supernatural. John Elliott is the main character, a disillusioned priest, questioning his beliefs and deciding that he was a failure. He is the vicar of St. Joseph’s church although he could quite so easily have been an accountant or a solicitor. His world was turned upside down when his father, a Minister of the Church of Scotland died suddenly at the age of 50. John was devastated and believed that by studying theology at Durham University would be the best path to follow. Initially, he was full of optimism hoping to encourage his parish to attend the church instead of filling just the first three rows of the church with its ageing members and the rest of the church empty. breakdown and was being treated at St. Mark’s. He asked to see John twice and questioned John’s beliefs in God and the church. “Do you believe in the resurrection? Do you believe Jesus really died?” John was shocked by these questions, more so when he was asked if he had experienced any strange dreams. He is told that when he next visits Alfred he will learn about an incident that happened a few years ago at St Joseph’s. A disturbing incident. George is disfigured with a snout-like face and he likes to remain in the shadows watching the children playing. He admits to not having had a proper childhood. He attends the church for one year then mysteriously leaves. John finds him odd and an enigma. I’m sure it came as a huge shock to many of us who live in the Almanzora Valley when we heard of the sudden death of Belén, the English speaking Spanish dentist with practices in Cantoria and Arboleas. By far the best dentist I’ve ever known, Belén always had a smile and clearly cared deeply for both her patients and her profession and will be very greatly missed by all who knew her. But what a tragedy that so young a woman who contributed so much to society, with so much potential, should so suddenly and inexplicably be taken. How much we feel for her family and close friends. But for most of us, I’d guess, this news also came as a salutary reminder of our own mortality, for many of us tend to live our lives in self-denial; pretending that death doesn’t happen. We forget that this is one thing that happens to us all. And as a result we make little or no preparation. Many of us planned our careers, investing time in education. We spent much time in planning our retirement, ensuring we invested wisely. The wise amongst us planned our move to Spain, making numerous enquiries and reading all information available about our new home. Many take out plans for their own funeral and/or investigate ways to minimise liability for inheritance tax. But how much time do we ever invest into preparing ourselves for the next World? OK I know it’s said that nobody’s ever come back! But what about Jesus? Didn’t he? And there’s a wealth of information about life after death in the Bible; so how much time have we ever given to reading that? It is going to happen to us one day – nothing’s surer. And it’s no good presuming we’ve plenty of time –we none of us know how long we have; so just how well are we prepared? And what do we plan to do about it? For eternity’s a long while, and must surely therefore be worth some serious preparation. Once you have peeled, chopped, prepared and assembled everything, heat the oil in the pan over a fairly high heat. Now season the chicken joints, adding 4 of them to the hot oil to sauté on all sides until golden brown, then remove them to a plate and do the same with the other 4 joints. Next add the onion, pepper and chorizo and fry these over a medium heat for 6-8 minutes, or until they’re nicely tinged brown at the edges. Now add the garlic, paprika, cayenne and saffron and cook for another minute, then return the chicken to the pan, followed by the tomatoes, plenty of seasoning and 2 pints (1.2 litres) boiling water. simmer, turn the heat down and cook, uncovered, for 10 minutes. After that, remove the chicken pieces and set them aside, then pour the rice into the centre of the pan. Bring everything back up to the boil, give a final stir and simmer, still uncovered, for about 10 minutes. During that time, shake the pan occasionally and move it around on the hob a little if the hob plate is not as big as the base of the pan. Next, return the chicken, along with the prawns and peas, to the pan and continue to simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked, adding a little more hot liquid if you think it’s necessary. Now shake the pan again, making sure the rice is completely immersed. Turn the prawns over halfway through the cooking time – they will turn pink when cooked. The rice at the edges of the pan will take longest to cook, so to test that the paella is ready, take a little of the rice from the edges and check it’s cooked through, then remove the pan from the heat and cover with a clean tea cloth for 5 minutes to absorb some of the steam. The paella is now ready – just garnish with the lemon wedges and don’t forget to have hot plates ready to serve it on. Source:www.deliaonline.com

2 cloves of garlic 1 onion 1 carrot 15 g fresh flat-leaf parsley 70 g chorizo 2 skinless, boneless higher-welfare chicken thighs olive oil 1 teaspoon sweet smoked paprika 1 red pepper 1 tablespoon tomato pure ́e 1 cube chicken stock 300 g paella rice 100 g frozen peas 200 g frozen peeled cooked prawns 1 lemon

Method

Peel and finely slice the garlic, peel and roughly chop the onion and carrot. Finely chop the parsley stalks, then roughly chop the chorizo and chicken thighs. Put a lug of oil into a

large lidded shallow casserole or paella pan on a medium heat, add the garlic, onion, carrot, parsley stalks, chorizo, chicken and paprika, and fry for around 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Deseed and chop the pepper, then add to the pan for a further 5 minutes. Stir through the tomato pure ́e and crumble in the stock cube, then add the rice and stir for a couple of minutes so it starts to suck up all that lovely flavour. Pour in 750ml of boiling water and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Pop the lid on and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes, stirring regularly from the outside in and from the inside out, and adding a splash of water if needed. Stir in the peas and prawns, replace the lid, and cook for a further 5 minutes, or until hot through. Season to perfection, then chop the parsley leaves, scatter them over the paella, and serve with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over. Source: www.jamieoliver.com

Controversy surrounds a Playa Serena hotel after guests held a demonstration when their complaints were not answered by the management. The action by a large group of customers took place last Monday, at the four star Bellavista hotel in the Urbanisation. The guests had filed complaints with the hotel over a number of issues, namely poor maintenance, low levels of cleaning and hygiene and poor quality food and service. Customers made their stand in the hotel reception area on Monday morning after repeated complaints over a number of days were ignored. They claimed that air conditioning was not working correctly and that rooms were not being cleaned properly, as well as insufficient provision of towels and linen. Other complaints included what guests considered to be a lack of sufficient staff to cope with guest numbers during the peak holiday season. One of the guests, Jose Palacio from Elche, explained why they had taken the action, saying, “The hotel is badly maintained, badly cleaned and badly staffed. We had repeatedly asked for changes to be made, but the hotel management have ignored our requests.” Other guests complained the food was inadequate and repetitive, one said, ”We seem to get the same selection of food every day, there’s no variety, it’s very boring and often not enough.” She added that items such as milk, yoghurt and ice cream always ran out quickly and were not replaced. Police returned to the hotel on Tuesday in case there was a repetition of the protest, a police spokesman said, “We felt it necessary to attend the hotel again on Tuesday, but no further action was taken by the guests.” He said that it had all been good natured and both guests and hotel managers seemed to have sorted out some of the problems. But it appears it’s not only customers who have been complaining about

conditions at the hotel. Members of staff have allegedly complained about non payment of wages and lack of basic equipment to enable them to carry out their duties. Jordi Sole, chief executive officer of the Vista hotel chain, said, ”As far as the staff are concerned, in some cases, things have been magnified and misrepresented.” He conceded that complaints about the quality and variety of food were valid and that staff were addressing the issue. He said because of the high occupancy at this time of year – 98% last week – it was difficult for kitchen and waiting staff to keep up with the demand for food at peak times of the service. Queues formed very quickly when certain items of food ran out and this often led to unrest amongst the guests. It was two weeks ago that I reported the possible sale of the Bellavista hotel by the council of Roquetas, to cover outstanding debts, including non payment of taxes. The auction of property has been ordered by The Fund Raising Office and will take place on 15th October. Prices given by the council range from 25,000 euros for a small shop, up to 14 million for an hotel – the Bellavista: the sum total amounts to almost 33 million euros. Other assets include 27 houses, three of them still under construction, 4 apartments and 5 plots of land. Mr. Sole would not comment on the possibly forced sale of the hotel by the council, only to say the running of the hotel would not be affected by any speculation as to its future ownership. He said the council’s action was against the owners of the hotel, not the management company who currently run operations independently there.

A stranded cow rescued

Motorists driving on the road were warned by signs that cattle might be crossing but didn’t expect to see one caught halfway over.Jason Weigner nearly drove past the stricken cow near Chochis in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, but became its saviour as he and his wife Jenna pulled over to help rescue the calf. Mr Weigner, 31, said: “It seemed pretty resigned to the fact it was stuck and it probably was on for at least 10 to 15 minutes. “It did not seem scared until I went over to help it as up to that point, it was pretty calm. “When I went over to help it, it suddenly acted scared and tried to get off. “It flailed around a bit before realising forward was not its only option and tried backing off the rail.

ground in a soggy heap of bent aluminium, towels and twine. This was not the first time it had fallen in combat, but this time it was the last – it was beyond repair. Nothing daunted we betook ourselves to the huge Chinese shop, where we reasoned there would be a plethora of whirligig washing lines for sale. There were three – but the whirligig top was echoed by whirligig feet, and the whole lot was packaged in plastic with an illustration of a manically smiling young lady holding up a very small teatowel. I looked at them glumly. There is no way that these elegant art forms in aluminium would stand up in Limaria, the birthplace of Spanish hurricanes! Free-standing whirlygigs would be less use than the standard chocolate fireguard - I needed something that could be anchored to the bedrock as securely as a lighthouse. We then tried the large

Chinese shop, which had no whirligig washing lines at all, so we paraphrased ‘should have gone to Specsavers’ into ‘should have gone to Lepanto’, a Ferreteria small enough to fit several times over in either of the Chinese shops. And hey presto! There was the whirligig washing line of desire propped against the doorframe! As I picked it up I thought I heard an evil Imp-like chuckle, so I checked it over – it was missing the crucial piece - the bit that gets hammered into the ground! I relayed this information to the girl at the till, who hollered for José in tones that would have secured her employment anywhere as Town Crier, and which caused temporary deafness in those queueing nearby. José returned with the vital piece. We paid, returned home, and lost no time erecting Whirlygig #2 –That persistently pesky Imp will find it has met its match – it will not defeat us!

Rapier-like Wit

Have you ever wanted to respond to a remark that someone has made, but just cannot think of anything witty or meaningful to say? Then a little later when it is far too late, some snappy line comes into your head that you wish you had thought of earlier. Those that can come back immediately with these gems have my admiration, as do comedians who have the ability to reel off original one-liners. All this came to mind last week when Tim Vine won the award for the funniest joke for the second year running at the Edinburgh Fringe with: “I decided to sell my Hoover . . . well it was just collecting dust.” Brilliant. There are so many masterpieces like this out there; many of them from people no longer with us, but their genius lives on in the wonderful humour. Groucho Marks has a large number attributed to him, some famous and some not so well known. Things like: “I intend living forever or die trying.” And: “If you’ve heard this story before, don’t stop me because I’d like to hear it again.” Bob Monkhouse was without doubt one of the wittiest comedians I have ever seen live and I was in stitches when he told the audience: “I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my father. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers.” He was terminally ill with prostate cancer at the time. And he

gave us pause for thought when he pondered: “What do gardeners do when they retire?” The delivery of course is all important and the dead pan trade mark of Steven Wright is inseparable from his eccentric brand of humour. “I’ve named my dog ‘Stay’ . . . he went insane . . . Come here, stay.” And “If the pen is mightier than the sword – in a duel I’ll let you have the pen”, are just two that always appeal to my own sense of fun. Others are designed to make us think as well as chuckle. “If all the nations in the world are in debt, where did all the money go?” Steve Connelly is another comedian in the same mould with things like: “Trees that grow in smoggy cities are needed to make carbon paper” and “Which of the Himalayas is the shortest?” Also Woody Allen . . . “I believe there is something out there watching us. Unfortunately it’s the government.” And George Carlin when he philosophised: “There’s no present. There’s only the immediate future and the recent past.” Mother’s-in-law have always been prime targets for comedians with Les Dawson being perhaps the best known exponent – at least if you are British. Spouses also receive their fair share of ridicule from the funny men and some of my favourites come from Rodney Dangerfield. “My wife and I were happy for twenty years – then we met.” And: “My wife met me at the door the other night wearing a sexy negligee. Unfortunately she was just coming home”, are just two examples. Victor Borge – my Dad’s favourite – was not only a very funny man, but also a

brilliant concert pianist and conductor. The accent as well as the straight face made him that much funnier and I can hear my Dad’s infectious laugh now as Victor, seated at the piano announced to the audience: “I only know two pieces – 0ne is ‘Clair de Lune’ . . . and the other one isn’t.” My personal favourite was the late Spike Milligan – one of those hilarious but tragic figures who seem to make up much of the star filled firmament of great comics. He was never predictable – you always knew something was coming but never quite sure what. “I have the body of an eighteen year old” he once said. . . . “I keep it in the fridge.” And as a reminder of his humour, there for all to see on his head stone the words: “I told you I was ill.” Not all humourists are stand up comedians. Noel Coward at the height of his fame was besieged by reporters at the airport wanting to know why he had been visiting Switzerland. Without hesitation and in his inimitable cut glass voice, he informed them: “I simply adore chocolate.” On one occasion at a party, a group of his friends were discussing the differences between men and women. “What do you think Noel?” one asked him, to which he replied, “I simply can’t conceive.” Wonderful stuff, as was his testament to living: “I’ll go through life either first class or third, but never in second.” And from perhaps the greatest man of the 20th century, Winston Spencer Churchill – that rare combination of politician, humourist and war leader: “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.”

Persistent Peskiness

The day so far had been less than tranquil. I had fallen over for no reason, the component parts of the pool cleaning apparatus had wilfully disengaged themselves mid-clean, and the instruction manual for Pete’s camera had disappeared into the ether and not left a forwarding address. To the annoyance of the Mischief Imp that caused them, we had surmounted all these irritations. However, any Mischief Imp worth its salt is not to be beaten quite so easily, so it turned its attentions to the washing line. The washing line was a battered old campaigner, bearing the scars of years of conflict with the elements, and the Imp had no difficulty bringing it to the

alqueria

35

viewpoint Los Terribles

Alqueria was fast becoming known as a bikers’ paradise. The lack of laws and only José Cabrasilbido, the local policeman to maintain peace meant freedom for these leather jacketed latter day rebels. Alqueria even boasted its very own motorcycle gang, ‘Los Terribles’. Among its members were ‘Petrol-Vapour Pedro’ high on gasoline fumes even before he leaves the house. ‘Long-Stroke Jake’ so named because, well perhaps it´s better not knowing. Even Loco Paco joined but was drummed out for fitting stabilisers to his 50cc Derbi moped. Motoring events are rare in Alqueria, although the ‘Google Street View’ camera car did come into the pueblo. It arrived one Sunday morning and was never seen again. Coincidently the Village now has a security camera installed in the Plaza and Arián Pérez has a new car with a strange hole in the roof. Los Terribles raced back and forth on their machines scattering the old and infirm. They made the Bar La Casa Devante their headquarters turning the quaint Spanish taberna into an oily, greasy dive. When Manuela heard there was a huge Yamaha outside the Bar she hurried to the hostelry. She was however under the illusion that a Yamaha was an organ. Rival gangs thundered into the Pueblo and fought pitched battles with Los Terribles, other gangs and even themselves. Civil strife was being hijacked by outsiders. The Alquerian pastime was being usurped by foreigners and that would never do. The people of the Village were forced to live in peace while they witnessed imported anarchy. Something had to be done. Loco Paco was still smarting from his blackballing by

Los Terribles and vowed revenge. Manuela was disappointed to discover that a huge Yamaha was in fact only a motorcycle and Poyato was losing money as the bikers drank bourbon and not Remitroot based booze. The now defunct Alquerian Space Program had left as its legacy several hundred litres of Remitroot rocket fuel. In the dead of night the disgruntled Alquerians drained the tanks on the motorbikes and refilled them with the potent liquid. The massed ranks of bikers turned their ignition switches as one. It was an awe inspiring sight. Some bikes disintegrated immediately. One Electra Glide spanned the Río Verde before breaking up. The rider left clutching the machine’s handlebars now detached from the smouldering wreck which was once his pride and joy. Petrol-Vapour Pedro, as was his custom partook of the fuel orally. He still wanders the Village, a glazed look, permanent grin and speaking a rare Mandarin dialect only spoken by a handful of survivors from the Great Wampee Disaster of 89. Poyato made a mental note to exploit the linguistic capability of Remitroot overindulgence. Alqueria was now free to engage in much loved domestic civil unrest, restoring the status quo and bringing stability back to the Pueblo.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

1. Rearrange The Furniture - Pull your furniture away from the walls. Try positioning it at intriguing angles. For example, a sofa arranged diagonally across a narrow living room will make the room look wider. 2. P aint A Wall - Paint one wall your favourite colour and make it the focal point. Hang interesting art on that wall and move a nice piece of furniture there. The trick is to make sure that the colour is one that is shared with several other objects and fabrics in the room. 3. Bring In Plants - Greenery always adds a breath of fresh air to a room. If you don’t have a green thumb, try silk plants and trees; the quality is now so good that its hard to distinguish them from the real thing! 4. L ay An Area Rug - An area rug is a wonderful way of defining a conversation area. Try one that complements the room; lay it at an angle

beneath your coffee table. 5. Hang Pictures or A Mirror - Hang pictures that reflect your personality. Try frames that are more ornate. When hanging a mirror, try and position it so that it reflects and nice view or an interesting architectural element of your home or garden. 6. Group Collectibles - Pull out your favourite collectibles - show off your personality! Find a display area and group related objects together, in sets of three or five. Try and vary the shapes for maximum impact. 7. Add Decorative Pillows - The good news about decorative pillows is that they are an easy way to add textures and patterns to a room. Still better, they can be changed to jazz up a sofa or chair before your room is ready for a major makeover. 8. R eplace Lamps - Lamps are probably the one thing in your home that will give others a clue that your room is outdated. Seek out new and fresh lamps that make a statement. 9. Add A Throw - Similar to decorative pillows, throws add texture to your furniture. They come in all kinds of natural and man made fabrics so it’s just a matter of finding a pattern and style that you like. 10. Eliminate Clutter - Clutter has a way of eliminating the desired mood and effect of any room. Find storage spaces for papers, toys, and other items that take from the personality of a room.

19th Hole Golf Society

Thursday 21st of August, twenty intrepid members of the 19th Hole Golf Society made the long trip down to La Envia Golf Complex near Vicar. A trip well worth the effort, the course can only be described as beautiful, with tree lined fairways, Tee Boxes almost manicured, and the Greens perfect, the whole course is more than amply watered lending itself to a really good round of golf. Unfortunately, golf doesn’t work like that, whilst some teams, in this 4 ball best of Two Stableford competition scored well, others fared less well. The day almost started with a major disaster on the first hole when Ian Postles and Jose Manuel Parren did a brilliant imitation of Dick Dastardly and Mutly from the Whacky Racers when they drove from the Buggy path onto the wet grass at speed. The Buggy immediately took control and pirouetted down the fairway almost tipping them onto the fairway. Someone said the heard Ian shout “do something Mutly” The winning fourball, by a very small margin, was in fact the team of Ian, Jose, Nekana and Paco scoring 80 points. Followed by Zeta and Dave Denyer, Mike Palmer and Gary Grey with 78 points. Possibly, that result

sport could have been reversed if Gary had not insisted in doing trick shots like hitting a wall rebounding back past him, hitting a tree and landing some 5 metres from whence he started, this he did on at least four holes.A really great days golf in superb surroundings followed by excellent hospitality back at La Vida Result. Four ball, two best scores to count. 1st Nekana Galindez, Paco Ocaña Grayal, Ian Postles and Jose Manuel Parran. 80 points 2nd Zeta Denyer, Dave Denyer, Mike Palmet and Gary Grey. 78 points

The A7 motorway suffered two serious delays within the space of twenty four hours last week. On Wednesday, two cars were in collision on the north bound carriageway, resulting in a long delay to traffic, as emergency services attended the scene. A woman driver from one vehicle and a passenger in the second vehicle, were both taken to the hospital in Almeria, where there conditions were said to be stable. The road was closed for an hour to allow the vehicles to be removed. A more serious incident occurred on Thursday morning at about 9.30, when a lorry overturned, again on the north bound carriageway. The accident happened at the entrance to the Aguadulce tunnel and no other vehicles were involved. But the subsequent hold to traffic was extreme, with queues stretching back for 6 kilometres. Vehicles at the back of the jam were routed onto the old road which winds along the coast towards Almeria. The driver of the lorry was trapped in the cab of the vehicle and firemen had to use cutting equipment to free him. He was not seriously

injured, receiving only bruising to his head and shoulders. A number of tourists caught in the traffic jam were on their way to the airport to catch flights back to the UK and phoned ahead to report the accident. Both the Ryanair flight to Stanstead and the Easyjet departure to Gatwick were delayed in order to allow passengers to reach the airport. A spokesman said that both airlines were made aware of the circumstances involving up to twenty passengers booked onto their flights and took the decision to delay the aircraft in order to allow them to board. July and August are the busiest months of the year and traffic is notoriously heavy along the stretch of motorway between Murcia, Almeria and Malaga, 90% of which is due to holiday makers. A police source said, “So far this year, there have only been a small number of accidents causing delays on this part of the motorway network and fortunately, no lives have been lost so far.”

Spain has experienced a boom in the number of tourists from Russia in recent years, but fears are growing that the crisis in the Ukraine and a weak rouble could spell the end of the bonanza. Russian tourism to Spain shot up 40 percent in 2012 and 32 percent in 2013 to climb over the 1.5-million mark last year. But numbers were down 14 percent in June, and 18 percent in July, with Spain’s tourism sector now believing the drop could be even higher in August — up to 20 percent. “The main problem is that we weren’t expecting this fall and there are no other groups that take the spots we haven’t sold to the Russians,” the president of Spain’s hotels association Juan Molas told Catalan daily La Vanguardia. Operators say the crisis in Ukraine has shattered consumer confidence among the country’s middle classes. “On the one hand the conflict has strained relations between the European Union and (Russia). On the other hand a trip to a European destination is 17 percent more expensive for a Russian than a year ago,” Delfi Torms of Barcelona-based travel firm Serhs Tourism told La Vanguardia. Fellow tourism operator Jordi Matas

with NT Incoming also highlighted the fact that Russian authorities were telling people to take their holidays at home or in countries within the Russian sphere of influence.

Russians shun Spain as Ukraine crisis bites

The fall in the number of Russian tourists to Spain is a rare piece of bad news for the country’s tourism sector which has gone from strength to strength in recent times. Spain received around 1.3 million more foreign visitors from January to April 2014 than in the same period last year, recent figures from Spanish government agency Frontur show. The number of tourists from Germany was up 11 percent to 2.51 million, while 3.1 million Brits arrived (up 6.5 percent). In addition, 13 percent more Italians flocked to Spanish shores (0.87 million). In 2013, Spain overtook China to become the world’s third most popular destination for international tourists, by luring 60.6 million visitors. Those visitors splashed out a new record sum of €59.08 billion ($80.82 billion) as political unrest in Turkey and northern Africa saw tourists turn their attention towards Spain. Source: The Local
