Comic Relief fundraising reaches £1 billion mark Stephen Hawking, Daniel Craig, Lenny Henry, Dermot O’Leary and more helped to raise over £78 million during last night’s live show. Comic Relief fundraising reached the £1 billion mark during last night’s Red Nose Day coverage on the BBC. The charity – which first began 30 years ago – raised over £78 million during Friday night’s live show which featured the likes of Stephen Hawking, Daniel Craig and co-founder Lenny Henry who joined Claudia Winkleman and Russell Brand on stage to announce the landmark total. “This is a very strange moment for me,” said Comic Relief co-founder and vice chair Richard Curtis of the landmark amount. “When a bunch of comedians got together all those years ago we dreamed of raising a million or two, and never imagined the generosity that would be shown by the British public for so many years.” “Figures tell us that the billion pounds have helped around 50 million people in the UK and overseas, 50 million people whose lives have been
changed or saved by the generosity of people they’ve never met.” The new total – £1,047,083,706 – comes 27 years after the first Red Nose Day was held in 1988 and includes over £640,000 raised by X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary’s 24hour dance marathon. Also on last night’s bill was a return for comedy favourites Mr Bean and The Vicar of Dibley, plus a 007 mockumentary featuring current Bond star Daniel Craig with Sir Roger Moore, Rory Kinnear, Ben Whishaw and director Sam Mendes. The winner of Comic Relief Bake Off was also unveiled, and the BBC screened special appeal films from the likes of Peter Capaldi, Olivia Colman and Idris Elba. Musical entertainment came in the form of John Legend and Sam Smith, along with a One Direction spoof comprised of Johnny Vegas, Vic Reeves, Patrick Kielty, Jack Dee and Mick Helm who took to the stage as No Direction. Clarkson hints at BBC exit
Last week, RadioTimes.com broke the news that Jeremy Clarkson was considering quitting the BBC altogether, even if he was cleared over his “fracas” with Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon. And now the presenter – who was suspended on Tuesday over his actions – has hinted he will indeed leave the Corporation following his latest run-in, reportedly over a lack of hot food after a long day of filming the BBC2 series. Appearing to compare himself to a prehistoric beast, Clarkson writes in his column for The Sun newspaper, “I think it’s fair to say that nature made a mistake when it invented the dinosaur. It was too big, too violent and with such small and puny arms it was never going to be able to operate heavy machinery or even enjoy a bit of special ‘me’ time. “So one day all the dinosaurs died – and now, many years later, no one mourns their passing.” He continues: “Let’s be honest. These big imposing creatures have no place in a world that has moved on.” Clarkson’s cryptic column also contains a thinly concealed dig at the Beeb, talking of, “the modern, risk-averse world of health and safety,” before concluding, “The fact is that you can start as many campaigns as you like and call on the support of politicians from all sides, but the day must come when you have to wave goodbye to the big monsters and move on.” A petition – set up by right wing blogger Guido Faulkes – calling for Clarkson to be reinstated has already gained over 870,000 signatures ahead of the BBC’s disciplinary
panel, led by Ken MacQuarrie, which is rumoured to begin on Monday. Clarkson’s suspension means the next two episodes of Top Gear – which he presents with Richard Hammond and James May – have been pulled from the schedules, with the series finale (set to air on 22nd March) hanging in the balance. In addition to to his veiled remarks, Clarkson also made a brief, direct reference to his suspension. “I don’t intend to dwell here on what happened then or what will happen in the future. I’m sure you’re as fed up with the story as I am. “One of the things that has cheered me is how many people have expressed support in the last few days. I’m touched and grateful.” Although, he did take time to address rumours he’d resorted to taking the bus, a report that first appeared in The Times newspaper. “I can assure you that things are bad. But they are not that bloody bad.” radiotimes.com

Co-driver dies in horror rally crash Witnesses could only watch in horror as a 31-year-old man was burned alive in a rally crash in Mallorca on Saturday. Onlookers were left horrified after a man was burned to death in a car accident during the Oris Rally Clasico in Spain on Saturday. A 31-year-old man, who has been

identified as Jose Lumbreras, died after his vehicle burst into flames following a crash at the course in Mallorca. Witnesses claimed that the flames spread through the vehicle so quickly that emergency services were powerless to prevent the death of the codriver. Mr Lumbreras’ driver Carlos Iscar survived and is said to be in a stable condition at a local hospital. It is reported that the vehicle hit a tree around the 5km mark of the track and immediately caught fire, and an investigation is now underway. The vehicle scraped a stone wall before hitting the tree, and while the driver was able to escape, the co-pilot was unable to, although it is not yet known if Mr Lumbreras was conscious after the impact. Mr Iscar was later taken to Palma Planas clinic and the rest of the day’s action was cancelled. A statement on the event’s official website read: “We all know, motor racing is one of the most dangerous in the world. Once again, the proof is there with the death of a co-pilot during the Oris Rally Clasico. “This historic Spanish rally was overshadowed by the death of co-driver Jose Lumbreras (31 years). Carlos Iscar is in a serious but stable condition. The Spaniards ran on a Renault Turbo 5. “Our thoughts are, of course, with the families and relatives of the co-driver Jose Lumbreras and those of the pilot.” mirror.co.uk

MOJÁCAR UNDERTAKES GEOLOCATION SURVEY TO SAFELY MARK DISUSED WELLS IN THE MUNICIPALITY
Mojácar is making good use of the “Youth Employment Plan” introduced by the Junta de Andalucía with funding from the European Union, by geolocating disused wells, either on private or public property in the municipality. The extensive survey consists of recording the exact coordinates of individual wells, mine shafts or sinkholes in order to assign each one a GPS location. Likewise, they are putting up warning notices in order to identify them more easily and to make people aware of the danger. Once the work is completed, the town will have a census of wells and other hazards which may prove very useful in case of accidents, as happened some years ago when a young man from the town fell into one very early one morning in the area of “La Alcantarilla”. It was seven days later when he was found and rescued by the emergency services. This geolocation survey will help to make the emergency services
more efficient and effective in any future cases.
So far about fifty-three wells have been found even though some places like “La Alcantarilla” for example, have not been surveyed yet due their inaccessibility. The places which have already been inspected and had warning signs erected are “Las Alparatas”, “Camino del Descargador”, El Cantal, El Río y La Mata. As well as the wells, the surveyors are also geolocating water deposits, subterranean waterways, mine shafts and waterwheels, whose existence were previously unknown. This has also updated the census of water sources held by the PLAN INFOCA (the Wildfire Fighting Plan), which is very useful to help the emergency services quickly locate water in case of fire.

People’s Strictly for Comic Relief
Wednesday 11 March saw the first ever screening of People’s Strictly for Comic Relief, something which I am sure will be repeated after the terrific success of this one. The 6 contestants were selected for the show by being nominated for their services to different causes throughout the UK by the public, and I have included a short background on them along with their dance. The judges for this were Len Goodman, Darcy Bussell, Bruno Tonioli and just for this show Anton Du Beke. Opening the show was Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Trishna Bharadia who partnered Aljaz to dance a Jive. After being diagnosed with MS, Trishna has tirelessly supported other sufferers as she carried on dealing with her own associated problems a major one for this dance - fatigue. Trishna’s Jive was super for a first attempt, her arms were finished and clean and she was getting her knees well lifted. She could have been a bit softer through the knee action but otherwise a great start to the show. I gave her 7 and the judges a total of 35. Next to perform was Michael Pattie with Aliona and their Tango. Michael lost his son Dave to meningitis, as a result of which he set up a fund to raise money for research into the disease. He showed a nice staccatto action and retained his strong frame throughout the performance, the only problem was that his bottom was stuck out a bit but again a great performance. The judges awarded 33 and I gave him 8. Ex Royal Marine Medic Cassidy Little along with Natalie were next out with their Paso Doble. Cassidy lost his leg below the knee in Afghanistan but despite his injuries went back to help his injured colleagues pulling them to safety. I found the intensity, drama and power of this performance incredible. The characterisation was fantastic and the strength of line, high hips and arms throughout superb. He could have gone a long way in one of the normal shows! I awarded him 10 and the judges a perfect score of 40. Heather Parsons and Ian followed with a Viennese Waltz. On a skiing holiday, Heather contracted Necrotising Fasciitis, the skin eating bug leaving her in intensive care, in a coma for 2 weeks after organ failure and a heart attack and with only a 30% survival rate and 15 operations later she had lived to tell her
...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES story. She set up a charity ‘Where There’s a Will’ and is regularly a volunteer in ICU at her local hospital. She was extremely conscious that she was no longer pretty and people didn’t want to look at her and I’m delighted to say that after this show she is feeling positive about herself - well done Ian! She gave a nice elegant Viennese Waltz performance and retained her frame throughout the rhythm and position changes of her choreography. Her Waltz was a bit ‘skippy’ but again with the time restraints an excellent performance. I awarded her 8 and the judges 36. Phil Barnett and Jeanette with their American Smooth were next. A keen amateur dramatics fanatic, Phil sold his hairdressing business to set up a children’s theatre group ‘Kidz R Us’ for disadvantaged children in St Ives, Cornwall. He has helped children through very tough times, giving them their confidence back and raising over 2 million through their shows. Phil thoroughly enjoyed his performance on the show really getting into the character of the dance and despite a knee injury requiring surgery and delaying his training on the show by 2 weeks he still put in an excellent performance. I gave him 9 and the judges 40. Closing the show was Anna Kennedy and Robin with their Charleston. Anna has 2 severely autistic children now 22 and 25. But when they needed help in their younger years, there was insufficient there. Along with her husband, they went into huge debt, remortgaging their house to buy a building and convert it at a cost of over £627,000. Hillingdon House School started with just 19 children but now has 150 pupils, which is the largest school in Europe for children with Autistic and other learning disabilities. Anna averages only 2-3 hours sleep a night because of the demands of her children, yet still manages to ooze fun and energy. Her Charleston performance was ‘absolutely fabulous’, so much fun, energy lifts and tricks all pulled off superbly. I gave her 10 and she got yet another full house of 40 from the judges. My favourite 2 performances were Anna and Cassidy and during Friday’s show the result, after the public vote made Cassidy the winner of the first ever ‘People’s Stricly’. They all performed a closing number which would have graced any stage. All in all one of the best ‘Strictly’ shows I’ve ever seen I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done BBC - keep up the good work! I’ll be back in the Autumn with more ‘Strictly’ reports but in the meantime, come and join one of our classes (details in the Community News) and remember ‘ - Keep Dancing! Election Bandwagon Comes To Town
This is an election year in Spain and the first round of voting takes place right across Andalucia this coming Sunday, 22nd March. Spain’s electoral system is different to the UK’s. Whereas council elections in the UK take place at different times and the general election stands alone and happens in a relatively short period of time, in Spain the best part of a year is taken up with elections. Their system is not dissimilar to that of the USA, albeit on a smaller scale. The seventeen autonomous communities will all hold their council elections over the next eight months, the first of which are here in Andalucia. These are to decide on all levels of regional government, from the mayors of the smallest towns, right up to the President of the Council of Andalucia. Once they have been completed, then the general election will take place towards the end of the year, although a date has yet to be set for that. In political terms, this is quite a year as there are also general elections being held in the UK and Portugal too. Political analysts have been having a field day making all sorts of predictions about major changes to the political landscape in all three countries. How true their predictions will be is anyone’s guess. The UK is currently experiencing a surge in the popularity of UKIP. The Portuguese Social Democrat/Peoples Party coalition, under prime minister Pablo Coelho, has suffered a number of corruption scandals similar to those which have severely affected the last two years of Spain’s government. The former leader of the Social Democrats was arrested last year and is awaiting trial on a number of corruption charges. In Spain, the prime minister, Mariano Rajoy has been fighting an almost nonstop battle with the press and opposition parties over some very damaging corruption scandals, which have virtually brought his Popular Party to its knees. Added to that has been the phenomenal rise in popularity of the left wing, anti austerity party Podemos. The party was only formed 18 months ago and in that time has gained a huge following in the country. So much so, wild predictions are being made about it possibly gaining enough seats to influence the format of the next coalition – whether that would be with the present PP (Popular Party) led government, or with PSOE (Socialist Party). But all of that is a little way off; the major talking point has been the opening round of the regional elections on Sunday. Andalucia is the largest of Spain’s autonomous communities and has the second largest population. Much interest will be focused on how Podemos fares in the regional elections: if by next Monday morning they’ve gained seats in Andalucia, then the political future of Spain could well be in for a change. The outcome of the election here could well determine how people vote in other regions: for instance, if the Podemos candidates do gain substantial numbers of votes, then people who have been unsure about supporting them, could well be persuaded to vote in their favour.
If the Podemos vote reaches the numbers being predicted, it will have a dramatic influence on the balance of power between the two major parties. It’s a big ‘If’ though. I spoke to political analyst Jorge Raphael, from the University of Almeria last week and his assessment was that it’s very difficult to predict how the Podemos party will actually do. The founder of the party, former political science university lecturer Pablo Iglesias – a member of the European Parliament - is a charismatic character. It’s worth noting that in the 2014 European Parliamentary Elections, Podemos received 8% of the national vote, even though it was merely four months old at the time. Jorge Raphael says that if the new party was able to command that amount of votes in such a short period of time as it did last year, then their impact on this election could be considerable. He added, ‘Podemos has the advantage over all the other parties in that they carry no baggage; being so new on the political scene gives them a big advantage and what they’re saying appeals to many Spaniards. At the moment with corruption, unemployment and inflation on everyone’s minds, people are suspicious about the major parties, they want a change and that could well work in Podemos’ favour.’ As far as the local elections are concerned, Roquetas has been the centre of some heavy duty canvassing for some weeks, but last week the leaders of both the major parties visited the town. Pedro Sanchez, leader of the socialist PSOE, addressed a rally in the sports centre on Saturday and on Sunday, prime minister Mariano Rajoy appeared at the Auditorio Theatre to endorse the campaign of town mayor, Gabriel Amat. They also visited Vicar and El Ejido. On Friday, Susanna Diaz, the Socialist President of the Council of Andalucia, arrived in true presidential style in the port of Roquetas, walking along the quayside before attending a rally at the Club Nautico. She was there not only to canvass for her own re-election, but also to support local resident Manolo Garcia, who is standing as the PSOE candidate for mayor. (See photo) The current mayor of Roquetas, Gabriel Amat, has been in power for almost twenty years and his PP led council has a large majority. He is a major figure in the national PP and is also President of the regional party. He has not been without his share of corruption allegations, but has always managed to steer clear of trouble. He’s a consummate politician and has overseen a huge transformation of Roquetas in his time as mayor. By this time next week, any upsets in the voting trends across Andalucia will be being scrutinised with a view to how they might affect the forthcoming elections in the 16 other communities in Spain. I will be trying to shed some light on what has happened locally in next week’s edition of Sol Times. – Martin Shortland

“Shirley Valentine” near The Coast – Los Gallardos
Now you can now find out how Shirley, came to the Almanzora Valley and Los Gallardos from Liverpool via Mykonos. The Independent Theatre Group is proud to present “Shirley Valentine”, written by Willy Russell, which features the acclaimed Marie O’Brien in the starring role of Shirley Valentine. It is directed by Ian Jones, and was the first production of their 2014/2015 season when it was performed in Arboleas in November of last year. Now by popular demand it is being performed again for 3 nights at Teatro Miraflores at Los Gallardos Camping This transformative comedy drama follows our heroine – Shirley Bradshaw nee Valentine – a rather ordinary middle-class English housewife – as she prepares her husbands tea and ruminates on her life, talking to the wall about such subjects as her husband, her children, her past and an attractive offer, which she has received from a girlfriend to go on holiday to Greece. Her husbands shunning of his meal is the straw that breaks the camel’s back and Shirley agrees to take up the offer of the holiday and adventure, facing romantic possibilities and sudden self-awareness, she begins to see the world, and herself, in a different light. The play is being performed at Teatro Miraflores in Los Gallardos Camping on Saturday, Sunday and Monday 28,29,&30 March 2015, at 7.30 p.m. Tickets, which cost € 8.50 are available from, Gill’s Linen, P..Playa (Next to PAWS) in Mojacar and from Total Entertainment in Turre and from Camping Los Gallardos. SOLTIMES MARCH 2015
www.soltimes.com Hueval Overa is a market town that sits along the side of the Almanzora River in the province of Almeria, in Andalusia. The town is a merge of two medieval settlements – Huercal and Overa. The town and surrounding area has a thriving agriculture industry, mainly for the lead mining in the region. The town has a population of just under 14,000 inhabitants. Natural area Much of the surrounding countryside is desert-like; many visitors remark that the area is more like Arizona or Australia, than the Mediterranean coast. However, a few years ago a pine plantation was planted close to Huercal Overa - the first in the area for some 500 years. The forest is part of a long-term project to transform much of the area into lush greenery. The trees include almonds, oak and eucalyptus, as well as the ubiquitous palm. Market Town Market day is Monday and much of the town is taken over by the market on Monday morning. Huercal Overa benefits from good facilities with hotels, restaurants, hospital and municipal swimming pool and leisure centre.

City in Andalucia. The salt lagoons which begin at Las Marinas which is 4 kms south of Roquetas de Mar is part of the Natural Park and its salt marshes attract many species of birds, including flamingos who come here to breed. Away from the coast Roquetas de Mar is well known for its intensive greenhouse farming although tourism is still the main income. Roquetas de Mar is also known for its golf courses and boasts of its own splendid 18 hole course but is also within 20kms of Almerimar and La Envia Golf. There are excellent facilities for all kinds of water sports including water-skiing, jet-skiing, swimming, fishing, diving, sailing etc. The historic centre contains several monuments such as the church or Nuestra Senora del Rosario from the 17th century, the castle of Roquetas and the Arab watchtower of Cerrillos. There is a small marina which is surrounded by typical Spanish tapas bars and restaurants many specialising in fish dishes which bought in fresh each day by the local fishermen. There is an abundance of bars, restaurants and hotels catering for all nationalities and souvenir shops which sell all kinds of local crafts. There is also a mini train which is available to explore the resort. unique-almeria.com

SOL FEATURE Facilities Albox is a traditional white-washed Spanish market town with a population of around 11,000 inhabitants, of which a small percentage are foreign ex-pat residents. The town has all the facilities and service one would expect from a modern small town: shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, approximately 21km away. Albox has a municipal swimming pool, very typical of inland Spanish towns that don’t have access to beaches. You will find most locals frequenting the pool during the weekends and summer holidays. It opens throughout July and August. There is also a sports centre and tennis club, which also has its own swimming pool. The name derives from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish term for forest ‘el bosque’. The origens of Albox date back to Medieval times when the ancient fort town was located on a hill nearby to its current location. In 1503 it was completely destroyed by an earthquake and most of its historical buildings were lost. The town was reconstructed from scratch in its current location. Market Town A large market is held every Tuesday morning and a smaller market on Saturday mornings. On market days the neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic and stalls open up selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. Jamons (cured ham on the bone) can be found hanging from stalls and shop windows; dozens of varieties of queso (cheese), chorizo (cured sausage) and many more delicacies are on show. The market is extensive, with street upon street, a myriad of noise, colour and smells. In fact you can find just about anything in the Albox market. Source www.spain-holiday.com

LEGAL CORNER Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today’s article is a bit of a copout! There I’ve said it so ‘Publish and be Damned’ say I. How is it a cop-out? Instead of talking about the latest 10 Terabyte (10 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 KB’s) Fixed Disk Drive (Hard Disk Drive – lots of names and all are right!) which holds not only a HUGE amount of information (data) but also, currently, holds the record for being the largest available Fixed Disk Drive, I am, quite simply, going to point out a few Windows tricks that will help make your computer life a little easier. 1. Have you ever found the web page that you are looking at just too big for the browser screen and that you’re constantly having to move the bottom ‘slider’ bar backwards and forwards to read it all? My first suggestion is one of absolute simplicity – Press and hold the ‘Ctrl’ key on your keyboard and then tap the ‘-’ (minus) key. This will reduce the size of the test and pictures to allow for more on the screen. If you find that you have taking it a little too far then you can always hold the ‘Ctrl’ key and tap the ‘+’ key to enlarge the contents of the screen. As a final ‘throwaway’ tip, when you have finished looking at the screen at the enlarged / reduced view you can again hold the ‘Ctrl’ key and tap the 0 (number zero) key to return it to ‘normal’ (whatever that might be :-) 2. Here’s one that most people wouldn’t have even thought about. Did you know that you can move that Taskbar around? The taskbar is the bar that holds the ‘Start’ button and where you find all the open ‘windows’. Most people choose to leave it where it is, at the bottom of the screen. I’m not most people! To me, ‘drop-down menu’s’ should drop down and the only way that is possible is to have the taskbar at the top. To change it’s location, if you feel inclined to, you just right click with the cursor over the ‘Start button’, select ‘properties’ and un-tick ‘lock the taskbar’.
Now you can drag it to whichever edge of the screen takes your fancy even if it on either side! 3. Windows 7 users will have found the button’s that are sat on the taskbar as a sort-cut to programs can make life so much easier. So there are two (2) ways to do this, there is the Microsoft authorised way of going to the ‘Start button’ and looking for the program that you want to pin to the taskbar, right clicking over the chosen program to get a ‘drop-down’ menu and left click on the ‘Pin to Taskbar’ option. This works faultlessly every time! Then there is the Trevor method. Find the program and left click and hold the program you want, then drag it to the taskbar and un-click. Also works flawlessly every time! Choice is now yours. 4. Use your File Manager as a viewer. When you open your file manager there is an option to view the contents of a file (picture formats) which can be found next to the ‘?’ on the top right of the screen. It will normally be turned ‘on’. Goto a picture folder and open it. When you choose a picture, a much larger version will be displayed in the ‘Preview’ pane. Left clicking on the divider to the left of the ‘Preview’ pane and resize it. 5. This is probably the most useful of all the suggestion made today in this article. It is to contact me for free advice concerning your computer or tablet at the address or phone number below. Hope you are all enjoying this glorious weather and may it last a little while longer :-)
For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

How to plant a tree civvy street version; in autumn dig a hole and put compost or mulch at the bottom. Carefully place the tree upright in the hole making sure the roots are untangled to enable them to spread. Then using a mix of soil and compost fill the hole in. Press down firmly yet gently to leave a shallow depression so water collects around the base of the tree. Water liberally and again every few days for a month. After that once weekly will do for the next year until the tree is established. Spanish council employee version; buy the tree from a relation/friend of the Mayor as they own a garden centre. Pay full price to ensure the tree is top quality. Take delivery of the tree in late spring making sure it’s thrown roughly from the truck, then leave to dry out in the sun for a few days. Q. My wife and myself (71 and 68 ) have lived in Spain since 2006. We are both to the best of our knowledge tax residents. We have a house in joint names valued at approximately 180,000€ and savings of approx. 40,000€. We would like to know how much inheritance tax my wife would have to pay if I deceased, and how much capital gains tax we would pay if we decided to sell. A. You are going to like the answers. Inheritance tax: If you deceased, your wife would pay NO INHERITANCE TAX, as she would be entitled to 175,000€ tax free, which is more than the value of the estate she would receive. Please note that the 175,000 exemption in Andalucía, is an all or nothing exemption. If you are one cent over, you pay on all but the first 16,000€. Each autonomous region of Spain has it´s own exemption rates, and the legislation applicable (and therefore the levels of exemption) will be the
one of the autonomous region of Spain where the heir has been a resident for the larger part of the five years prior to the death. Believe it or not, very often tax planning involves moving from one area of Spain to another. Incredible but true: a wife resident in Almería inheriting a net estate of 813,000€ from her husband would pay just under 200,000€ in Andalucia while if the same wife had been living in Madrid she would have paid 0 inheritance tax! Could the lady have avoided the tax? Yes, but the tax planning would have required the family moved to Madrid. Capital gains tax: you will pay NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX because if you are over 65 years of age and are selling your main home (you can not claim this if you are a non resident), the sale is exempt of capital gains tax.

Joy for Britons duped into buying illegally built Spanish homes
Joy for Britons duped into buying illegally-built Spanish homes as country brings in laws which prevent their properties being bulldozed without being compensated British couples duped into buying illegal Spanish homes finally have a reason to celebrate after a decade of campaigning led to a change in the law. During the property boom, Britons who dreamed of spending their retirement in sunny Spain forked out their life savings to buy new homes only to find they could be demolished and they were not guaranteed any compensation. But thanks to years of campaigning by heart-broken Spanish homeowners, the law now states homes will not be demolished until they receive a payout. At the beginning of the last decade, new homes were built in abundance in Spain and buyers from northern Europe were keen to snap them up. But thousands had been built without planning permission and property promoters were ordered by the court to demolish the homes at their own expense, despite having already sold them. Although the court would acknowledge the existence of a buyer, there was no guarantee they
would receive compensation. Among such buyers was Peter and Margaret Hegarty, whose villa near the pretty village of Cantoria, south east Spain, was razed to the ground in November last
year. They fought for almost a decade to save their home, which they had
spent 35 years saving for. The couple bought their threebedroom house in 2005 - believing it had been built legally - but were duped by the then-mayor Pedro Llamas and property developer Francisco Pedrosa. In 2012, a court found the former mayor guilty of falsifying documents and sentenced him to two years in jail, suspended because it was his first offence. He and the developer were ordered to pay compensation to the Hegartys but declared themselves bankrupt and have yet to pay a penny. At the same time, a villa belonging to neighbours Frank and Janet Doel,
also near Cantoria, was torn down. Sadly, this is not uncommon. The first British buyers to see their home demolished were Helen and Len Prior. Their villa in Vera, Almeria, was torn down in 2008. The Hegartys’ neighbours in Cantoria, John and Jan Brooks, from Taunton, Somerset, had their property flattened in 2013. Their neighbours Clive and Gillian Davies also suffered the same fate. Even those who can keep their homes may live without water and electricity because they don’t have the right documentation to connect supplies. On Tuesday, the Senate of Spain made an amendment to the law meaning those who bought their properties in good faith must be compensated before demolition. This is thanks to determined British expats who have campaigned for change for many years. AUAN is a group established by residents in Almanzora, where there are 12,697 illegal constructions alone. President Maura Hillen, originally from Weybridge, Surrey, bought a £200,000 property in Spain and retired to the country in 2007 with her husband John. They were one of the unlucky couples to be sold an illegal home, but have been able to keep their property because a prosecution in the courts failed. Speaking to MailOnline from her Albox, Andalucia, Mrs Hillen, 52, said:
‘It looks like a house, it is a house, but far as the authorities are concerned, it’s not a house. ‘We were left with paperless properties and we have been working to improve our circumstances over the years.’ ‘It’s been hugely stressful for some people - it’s broken up marriages, it hasn’t helped with people’s health,’ she added. ‘Everyone reacts differently to these circumstances, but it’s not what we came here for. ‘As a result of our campaigning we managed to get a proposal before the senate of Spain to amend the criminal code. The good thing for us is that the senate recognises the injustice.’ The amendment was passed, something Mrs Hillen describes as the ‘first positive legislation change’. However, she believes a lot more still needs to be achieved. According to AUAN, there are an estimated 300,000 illegally built homes in southern Spain. dailymail.co.uk

5 Homeowner Tips
1) Check the roof: One of the first places to see damage on a house is the roof. You need to check your roof regularly, as issues here can go unnoticed until they become a big problem (and you get leaks). Do a visual inspection for slipped, cracked or badly damaged tiles. Look at the pointing and get someone in if this is in a bad condition. You should remove moss from tiles if it’s starting to take over. And give gutters a good clear out regularly, removing all leaves and weeds before they can block anything up. 2) Check for damp: Regularly check your walls for damp. It’s a serious problem that you must deal with straight away if you find it. Dampness can get through defective mortar joints or hairline cracks in any rendering. 3) Check anywhere water goes: Ensure the cement mortar around waste pipes is in a good condition and check water down pipes for splits or leaky joints. If there is anything growing on your walls such as climbing roses or ivy, either remove it or keep a very close eye. These plants can damage brickwork and retain moisture in the wall. 4) Keep woodwork in top condition: All wooden window and door frames should be painted at least once every three years. This will stop dampness getting in. Renew any broken sash cords in windows, and fix broken or cracked glass immediately. 5) Stop leaks before they happen: Inside your home, check your plumbing pipe work and waste pipes for joint leaks. Now and again clean out bath and sink traps. And if the seals between baths and showers and the wall are starting to deteriorate, replace them immediately.

The approach to the UK bank comes less than a year after it rejoined the stock market after Lloyds Banking Group sold off 50% of the business. Shares in TSB - the UK’s seventh-biggest lender - soared by more than 25% after the announcement. Sabadell’s offer for TSB is 29% higher than its price at the close of business on Wednesday. The New Order
The Alquerian General Election had failed to return a candidate with an overall majority. Manuela, Alqueria’s very own anarchist and femme fatale formed a coalition government with Loco Paco, clinically insane and a dung beetle breeder. The control of the Village was now firmly in the hands of the Hill People leaving the Newcomers with only a sizeable minority in the elected chamber. Manuela became Prime Minister and Paco her deputy but with the added responsibility of cleaning Alqueria’s only public urinal. Manuela, being an anarchist resisted all authority but didn’t hold back when exerting her own. The cabinet, apart from Loco Paco consisted entirely of women, strangely all less attractive than Manuela herself. Her private secretary, Rodger Delado stood six feet three in his stockinged feet and rippled with muscles, she consulted with him long and often. Manuela is an anarchist in the true sense of the word, unfortunately the ordinary people of the Pueblo also possess anarchistic tendencies. Most previous governments only passed those laws which they knew would be obeyed. Consequently there were a mere three laws on the statute book and one of them dealt with a ban on the use of rocket propelled vehicles on every third Sunday of alternate months. Manuela was however determined to bring peace and harmony to the village or at least mould it into something that reflected her own needs and aspirations. The womenfolk of Alqueria looked forward to a new beginning and the male population started taking steroids. Rodriquez, now leading the opposition planned the
ove r t h r ow of this ‘Wanton Woman’ which is how he liked to refer to Manuela. The first and most obvious ploy would be to try an win over Loco Paco, break the coalition and force another election. But how does one win over a loony? Rodriquez decided he must share a mutual interest with Paco and to this end he ordered a gross of assorted Saharan Dung Beetles. He attempted to train them to beg, roll over and retrieve sticks but all to no avail. Training Saharan Dung Beetles requires the sort of skill and intelligence only Loco Paco and others of his ilk possess. Rodriquez erred on the side of simplicity and gave his mechanised pets the run of the house. Loco Paco would then be cordially invited to partake of a glass of wine, see the beetles and that would be the start of a beautiful friendship. What could go wrong? Paco duly arrived and announced his presence with a firm knock on the politician’s imposing front door. Rodriquez in his haste to cement the friendship rushed to the door quashing dung beetles underfoot. Paco was not impressed at the sight of the sticky yellow slime of the now defunct and pulverised scarabs. Rodriguez plotted anew?
one mans grief by Paul Martin
One to the left, two to the right, one to the left, two to the right . . . Tap – tap, tap, Tap – tap, tap . . . Need a clue? I’m talking about something which the Monty Python team would have referred to The Ministry of Silly Walks. This particular walking style may not have come under the jurisdiction of the bowler hated civil servant portrayed by John Cleese – it’s a little too conservative, I suspect – but it’s none the less of interest. Those of you who live in Spain will know all too well about the Beirut style bombardment of sky rockets which takes place at every Fiesta. It drives cats and dogs under beds, humans to distraction and it’s always a wonder to me that more people don’t get injured by the falling sticks: they’re three feet long and of robust construction. I’ve observed that the men of my town are stick carriers. This may purely be a local trait, an Andalucian one, or possibly even of national proportions. And it’s not just rocket sticks they carry. A small man regularly strides past my house with a long cane; the sort of cane my father used to hold up his French beans; it’s six feet long and at least a foot taller than him. If it were any thicker, it would be called a staff. Perhaps he see’s in the cane what he lacks in life – height. But I digress. Tap – tap, tap. Tap – tap, tap . . . A man, who’s as regular a clockwork, walks through the port every day, tapping his legs with a rocket stick as he goes. Now there are two points of interest here: firstly the metronomic tapping and secondly his walking style – one is very dependent upon the other. Imagine if you will, the pecking, short stepped, almost comic walk of Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot - a very fussy stride from a very fussy man, and I also imagine, quite
Royal Fall From Grace The state of the nation was stable. All the factions were at peace with each other. Pete gave the orders, and I largely ignored them. The Dog was in charge of security, and happily passed comment on anything in and around the national borders at the top of her voice. We were all content, and knew our places and our duties under the beneficent rule of Her Imperial Majesty, Sayyida al Hurra, Queen of Darkness, She Who Must Not Be Questioned, a.k.a. Sid, Somebody Else’s Cat. Her day revolved around her kitten, Mr Tommy Fluffypants. She loved her kitten; she kept him safe behind the toolshed when he was tiny, she educated him in the necessary survival skills needed for a life in a land of humans and dogs, but most of all she played with him. It was heart-warming to watch mother and son playing together so joyfully, then one day everything changed. It changed on the day that the pubescent Tommy went for his Attitude Adjustment at the vets. He returned with a strategically bald bum and slightly wobbly legs, and as he staggered up to his mother for comfort her first action was to cuff him. I was astonished, and so was he. He looked up at me with such a perplexed little face that my heart went out to him in his hour of need. I imagined that perhaps it was because he smelt of vet, so I stepped in with surrogate comfort, just until she could take up the maternal reins again. But she didn’t. Every time the
hard to sustain. Now, my sky rocket stick carrier has that walk off to a tee, but the leg tapping adds a whole new dimension to it. He holds the stick in his right hand and taps once on his left leg and twice on his right . . . one the left, two to the right. For as long as I’ve lived here – four years now – I’ve plotted his tapping walk with mounting interest, why does he do it? He often calls into Bar Rafa at six for a coffee, so a few weeks ago I finally approached him and asked the big question, would he mind telling me about the stick tapping. He’s actually from Bilbao, so with a strong accent and a name which I still can’t pronounce – lots of X’s and double I’s – but his explanation was moving and touching. He and his wife of fifty years moved here six years ago to be nearer their children. Shortly after their move, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and died within months. He took up walking as a means of getting out of the house. On the anniversary of her death and on a morning of Fiesta sky rockets, a stick fell at his feet and he picked it up, he said it was still hot. He took the stick home and subsequently on his walks and developed the tapping routine as a rhythmic way of reminding him of his dear wife. He was pleased I’d asked and we’ve since met up for a chat and a coffee. Every time I see him walk by one to the left, two to the right - I know what he’s thinking about and I know how he’s still grieving. We all have our own way and this is his.

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk poor little mite went anywhere near her she launched into him with language such as no lady, much less a royal lady, should use, and backed it up with left-rights, or right-lefts, of which any professional pugilist would have been proud. He has become nervous of her, he slinks about the house like a guilty conscience, he won’t go anywhere near her, and if she comes in, he goes out. Something has changed between them. I hoped it would resolve itself, but even a week later she still cuffs him on sight. Does she now consider him grown up and ready to leave the family home? Will the situation ever return to normal? Will their fractured relationship ever heal? I can’t stand all this strife, and advice would be welcome, please. If their relationship doesn’t improve, she will have to find herself a new kingdom somewhere else.

fresh for spring
SOL FOOD & DRINK FEATURE
From the markets and out of the gardens come the first sweet offerings of the season. Dig in with these delicious spring recipes.
Pea, Mint & Spring Onion Soup with Parmesan biscuits The Parmesan 'tuiles' make this soup stylish enough for entertaining - but they take just a few minutes to make Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil knob of butter ½ bunch spring onion, sliced, plus a few extra to serve 1 potato, cut into small dice 1l hot vegetable stock 900g frozen petits pois ½ small bunch mint, leaves picked, plus a few extra to serve 85g parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), very finely grated
Method Heat the olive oil and butter in a heavy based pan. When foaming, add the spring onions and potato. Gently fry without colouring for about 5 mins. Stir in the stock, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 mins or until the potato is tender. Stir in the peas, bring to the boil again, then cook for about 3 mins until they are just done. Remove the pan from the heat, add the mint leaves and whizz in a blender or food processor until smooth. To make the Parmesan biscuits, heat the grill to high. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment and divide the grated Parmesan into 6 long strips. Grill for 1 min or until the cheese has melted and is lightly golden. While still warm and a bit flexible, release the biscuits from the baking parchment with a palette or cutlery knife, then cool until firm. To serve, heat the soup and divide between 6 bowls. Scatter with mint and sliced spring onions, if you like, and serve with the Parmesan biscuits on the side.

Halve the green beans and cut the asparagus into 3 pieces on the diagonal. Cook the tagliatelle, adding the vegetables for the final 5 mins of the cooking time. Meanwhile, grate the zest from half the lemon and squeeze the juice from the whole lemon. Put juice in a small pan with the mustard, olive oil and a little black pepper. Warm through until smooth. Drain the pasta and veg, adding 4 tbsp of the water to the lemon sauce. Return the pasta to the pan, reheat the sauce, adding most of the chives, then add to the pasta, tossing everything together well. Divide between 4 shallow bowls and top each with black pepper, Parmesan and the remaining chives.

At The Luvvies monthly meeting at Maloans in Arboleas there was much talk about catering size kitchen utensils and torpedoes. Not so surprising as the group were discussing the set needs for their next production: Dinner Ladies, a sitcom set in a catering kitchen. So that all members could re-acquaint themselves with the characters there was a quick read-through of the script, and it was generally agreed that yes, it is as funny as it was when first seen on the telly in 1998, with the lead characters played by Victoria Wood (Bren) and Andrew Dunn (Tony). Auditions will be held at Maloans at 2 pm on Wednesday 18 March for all the parts. In case anyone is worried – the torpedoes are of the bread variety, not the military sort!To find out more about the Luvvies, go to info@theluvvies.com or call 634 346 309

Roquetas Bars Get Special License Extensions
The council announced a small change to the local licensing laws last week. It will affect bars, restaurants and hotels wishing to provide live music for their customers. The change will be most welcomed by the owners of premises along the beachfront promenade in the port of Roquetas. For some years now, they’ve fought a battle with the residents association over what constitutes a suitable level of noise. The council has ducked and dived over the matter, no doubt aware of the fact they are in a no win situation when it comes to slapping closure orders on premises which contravene the local by-laws: they are after all the authority who approve the license applications in the first place. Things came to a head last year when the residents threatened court action if something wasn’t done to control what they considered to be the unacceptable noise from televisions, recorded and occasionally live music. At one stage, the council tried to enforce a total ban on all outside use of TV’s and music. As one bar owner pointed out to me in July when I was reporting the story for Sol Times, the noise emanating from their TV situated on the terrace, was no louder than that coming from the property located above the bar. His customers came to watch the football in the same way his upstairs neighbours were and as far as he was concerned, no one was being overly disturbed. He, along with other bar owners along the strip took the matter up with the council, who were quite hasty in retracting the proposed ban. Since then, a stalemate has existed between residents and bars. When I interviewed a residents last week, she said there was no problem during the winter when all her windows were closed; the problem was during the heat of the summer when everything was open. She has been living in the property for ten years and when I asked her if she was aware of the businesses which operated below before she bought the flat, she admitted she did. Many of the bar owners I spoke to stressed that they have done everything possible to accommodate the wishes of their neighbours, but said ultimately they were catering for a younger clientele who liked music and televised sport. The small changes are not dissimilar to the existing amendments which were introduced some years ago; that is, they say pretty much the same thing but in a slightly more wordy form. Premises will now be allowed to stay open for an extra two hours on national, regional and local festival days and also on even more specific ‘neighbourhood and district’ festivals. The list then runs through a lot of Saints days, Easter, Christmas, New Year and so on. As I say, it’s not unlike the present by-laws, so much so, the opposition PSOE and United Left parties have accused Mayor Gabriel Amat of staging the release of this information to coincide with the local elections

which take place on Sunday. Julio Aranchez, spokesman for United Left said it was a clear case of the council doctoring the present licensing laws in order to appeal to the electorate, saying, ‘Amat is struggling in his campaign for re-election and will do anything to enhance his campaign.’ Be that as it may, I for one can’t see this problem going away; if anything it will only exacerbate the situation, certainly during the summer. Hidden towards the end of the statement – so much so, I almost missed it – is the get out clause, which states, ‘Premises will be obliged to take appropriate measures that guarantee the correct operation of activities in order that the extension of opening hours do not inconvenience the neighborhood, or contravene any matters regarding public order’. It goes on to say that any failure to comply with the above will result in, ‘The initiation of disciplinary action on the license holders of the offending establishments.’ So where exactly does this leave the licensees? According to Diego Giraldi, manager of Bar Manzana, he says nothing has changed and that they will continue to operate as they have in the past, adding, ‘The council are in such a tangle over this, they don’t know what to do – this is just a re-work of what we’ve always done, ultimately it’s a suck it and see situation.’ Many of the residents of three other apartment buildings in the port area will no doubt be smarting at the continued attention the residents association further along the promenade seems to be getting in their fight against noise pollution. The Club Nautico is a favourite venue for weddings and birthday celebrations, but according to people who live in the buildings opposite, the club seems to have a special treatment order in force regarding noise and public order. A number of owners told me of the disruption which occurs there, especially during the summer, when parties take place on most weekends, often outside and the loud music goes on until 5 or 6 in the morning. They added that complaints are made on a regular basis but nothing appears to be done; one irate person whose apartment faces the club accused the council of having one law for some and one for the others. Whenever you have residential properties in close proximity to commercial premises, there will always be disagreement over what should and shouldn’t happen and it’s my guess, this argument will continue to rumble on for some time yet. On the one hand, the traders are legally licensed to carry out their businesses and are supported by the council and on the other, the council is trying to support the demands of the local residents, to curtail the noise they (the residents) perceive is disturbing their peace. I don’t think there’s a viable solution. – Martin Shortland

This was my area of expertise when I was in educational management and conducting some post-grad research into reading so it is an area I am more than happy to promote. “Each story is written around a basis of positive family, personal and social values,” didactic in nature. Series 1 will consist of 20 books, 9 of which have already been published. Peter Hayward covers a wide range of themes: train journeys, rain molecules, road safety, acorns, seat belts and a plethora of other relevant subjects. All of them are wellillustrated with the added bonus of primary colours so the reds, blues and yellows are appealing for the young readers. “With the aid of significant people helping them on their life’s journey, Alex and Anna are duly taught educational subjects whilst learning important life skills in a fun and friendly way.” Alex the Superhero: Grandpa arrives just before the imminent birth of Anna to do some DIY dressed in his extra large shirt which he believes is the suitable attire for a superhero. A touch of make-believe, inventiveness which is needed in children’s stories can be seen when Grandpa and his little soldier go to school looking out for someone or something that might need rescuing! pause for thought
When I first became licensed as a Reader in the Diocese of Blackburn, a close friend, who knew me better than most, raised the proverbial eyebrow at the thought that someone who liked to enjoy life to the full, and was (expressing it fairly politely) not without some faults, should become involved with the Church. In response I tried to explain that Jesus came to earth for sinners, and that I therefore was fully qualified. That if God was prepared to forgive me, then no one else should feel excluded. But of course, although God does indeed call sinners, the Bible reminds us that He calls us to repentance; to try by His grace to overcome the many temptations we face. And it’s an unfortunate fact that it often seems that the closer we get to God, the worse the temptations seem to become. The Bible tells us that Jesus Himself was tempted in every way as we are, but remained without sin (Heb 5 v 15), which confirms that temptation of itself isn’t wrong, it’s the enjoying of that temptation, or the giving in to it that’s wrong. And so it is that now in the season known as Lent, many Christians remember
the Temptations of Jesus, recorded in the Gospels as he spent 40 days in the wilderness being tempted by the Devil; using this as a means to examine their own lives. For some, this takes the form of fasting, or giving up sweets, cigarettes or other things they enjoy. For others, this can involve giving up time for Bible Reading or Prayer; or even, dare I suggest it, for actually going to Church. But however we respond to the challenge of Lent, I would suggest we could all benefit from a little honest self-appraisal, responding to God’s call to repentance in the certain knowledge that He is able to forgive our past failures and give resolve for the future. Run plastic-coated galvanized wires through hoops on the posts and beams, then train the climbers onto them. Tying In Tie the stems onto the wires with soft twine; be careful not to damage them. Retie as they grow, if necessary. Climbers twined around posts will also provide maximum cover. Pruning Tips Check the plant label or a reference book to determine the exact pruning requirements of each climber. Take care that you prune at the right time of the year to encourage flowers. Getting it wrong may mean the loss of flowers for an entire season. Some climbers need light pruning after flowering, while others need hard pruning to encourage new growth. Prune vigorous climbers regularly to keep them in check; aim to maintain the structure’s shape and to allow easy access. Use pruners and long-handled pruners on new growth and a pruning saw on old, thick wood. Quick-growing annuals, such as morning glory (Ipomoea), will cover the bare stems of vigorous climbers. Be sure to keep vigorous fruit climbers, like grapes, under control.

The 10 most influential Englishmen in Spanish football By Tony Matthews
Last week, I listed the first five of the top ten Englishmen who, over the years, have had a huge influence on Spanish football. Today you can read about my my second five.... Michael Owen was a terrific marksman with Liverpool, Real Madrid (signed for £8m/€10.2m in 2004), Newcastle United, Manchester United, Stoke City and England (40 goals in 89 games). In his club career he made 482 appearances and scored 222 goals, netting 16 times in 45 outings for the Spanish club. He helped Liverpool win six trophies and Manchester United three. Now a racehorse owner, he also acts as a soccer analyst/summariser with Sky and BT Sport. Gary Lineker, OBE, played for Barcelona from 1986 to 1989, during which time he scored 52 goals in 138 games, helping the Camp Nou club win the Copa del Rey and the European Cup-winner’s Cup. He also played for Leicester City, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur (FA Cup winners in 1991) and Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan. Recruited to Barcelona for £2.2m/€ 2.8m by Terry Venables after the 1986 World Cup, he struck a memorable hat-trick against Real Madrid in 1987. In his career, he netted a total of 238 goals in 466 League games, as well as scoring 48 times in 80 appearances for England. Terry Venables managed Barcelona from 1984 to 1987, winning La Liga and the Copa de La Liga while finishing runner’s-up in the European Cup in 1986. A midfielder with Tottenham Hotspur (gaining an FA Cup winner’s medal in 1967), Chelsea, QPR, Crystal Palace and St Patrick’s in Ireland, he made 512 League appearances in total. He also managed Crystal Palace, QPR, Spurs, Middlesbrough, Leeds United and the England and in Australia national teams. Recommended to Barcą by Bobby Robson, El Tel rebuilt the team at the Camp Nou before he was surprisingly sacked in 1987. Vinny Samways was an industrious midfielder who played for Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Wolves, Birmingham City and Walsall and Las Palmas (19962002), Sevilla and Algeciras in Spain. He scored 11 goals in 188 games here in Spain where he played longer than any other Englishmen in the modern era (six seasons). He helped Las Palmas reach the top flight in 2000 and now lives in Puerto Banus, Marbella Jack Greenwell was a Barcelona player for five years, 1912-17, during which time he scored ten goals in 88 appearances, gaining two League winner’s medals. He was also manager at the Camp Nou (two spells: 1917-1924, 1931-1933), winning
the Championat de Catalunya five times and the Copa del Rey twice. He was also in charge of Espanyol and Valencia as well as bossing clubs in Turkey and Peru. Greenwell was also part of the West Auckland team that won the first ever ‘World Cup’ in 1911, beating Juventus in the final for the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. This story was immortalised in the Dennis Waterman film ‘A Captains Tale.’ Others worthy of a mention are: Fred Pentland - known as El Bombin (the Bowler Hat) - played for Birmingham and Stoke and managed Racing de Santander (1920), Athletic Bilbao (twice), Athletic Madrid (three spells in ten years: 1925-35) and Real Oviedo (1926-1927). He won La Liga (twice), the Copa del Rey (five times), the Biscay Championship (also five times) and the Campeonato del Centro (once). He also managed France’s Olympic soccer team (1920s). Arthur Johnson, a centre-forward with Real Madrid, was the first manager at The Bernabeu (1910-20) and guided Real to four Copa del Rey triumphs. The scorer Real’s first-ever senior goal, in a 3-1 El Clasico win over Barcelona in 1902, he was also in charge of Athletic Bilbao. Jonathan Woodgate was Real Madrid’s centre-half (2004-07: 14 appearances, one goal). He has also played for Leeds United, Middlesbrough (two spells), Stoke City and Tottenham and gained eight full caps for England. Jermain Pennant played for Real Zaragoza (2009-10: 25 appearances, one goal) as well as Arsenal, Watford, Liverpool, Stoke, Leeds United, Birmingham City, Portsmouth, Wolves, FC Pune and Wigan Athletic (his current club) He’s also won 24 U21 caps for England.. Stan Collymore scored 99 goals in 252 League games while playing for Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Fulham and Bradford City. He also gained three caps for England before having a spell with Real Oviedo here in Spain in 2001. Gifton Noel-Williams was a striker with both Real Murcia (2007) and Elche (2008), scoring ten goals in 40 games in Spain. He also played League football for Watford, Stoke City, Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion, Millwall and Yeovil Town, and has also served with DFW Tornadoes and Austin Aztex in the USA.

I am saddened to say that last week I inadvertently incurred the wrath of the Mighty Vicko. “William!” he said, “Follow me at a discreet distance to my secret chambers!” I did as I was bid and followed meekly in the footsteps of the great man. Leading me via a circuitous route so that I would be unable to remember their location, he led me to his chambers. Fixing me with an icy stare he lowered himself on the only available seat. I glanced around me and could not help but notice that his chambers were surprisingly small and decorated in a most Spartan fashion. You may have noticed a picture in the paper last week of a striking looking man wearing a High Visibility jacket standing close to the goalpost. The caption stated his name as Fred De Merc when in actual fact it was none other than the Mighty Vicko. It was because of this, albeit innocent mistake that I found myself being berated by my hero the Mighty Vicko. I managed to catch the odd word here and there but unfortunately I couldn`t hear everything he said because with one set of chambers out of action, the chamber next door was in almost continual use and we were subjected to the sound of incessant flushing and a particularly loud noise from the cistern as it refilled. Suitably chastised we returned to the pitch where the Mighty Vicko addressed the teams. “You all know that William made-eth a catastrophic mistake last week. So I, the Mighty Vicko decree that no-one shall speaketh unto him for the duration of the game or until he buys a round. Whichever occurs the soonest!” Even though I was the victim of the
harshness of the sentence I could not help but admire the imbued serenity of his Liverpool accent. With that he blew the whistle and the 13th game (DAN - DAN! D A N N N ) began. The bit in brackets indicates loud spooky chords played on an organ. The 13th proved unlucky for the Seizure Stoppers as it wasn`t long before Fiery Fred scored the first of four, yes four goals for the Coffin Dodgers. As usual during half time, a plate of orange segments was passed around by Hurricane Helen. Waiting until his attention was drawn elsewhere and taking an awful chance she threw me a couple of pieces while the Mighty Vicko was distracted. Bless you Helen. Amazingly and against all odds, Alan Mitderspecs scored the Seizure Stoppers one and only goal. Hurrah!” Unfortunately it was too little too late because adding insult to injury Tony Notear scored a 5th goal for the Coffin Dodgers. Hurrah! Man of the match? That has to be Fiery Fred for the four goals he scored. Probably because Peter Dem Bones Kelly was once again wearing his bright red “Wizard of Oz” bootees, Fiery Fred went into Toto mode and clung to Peter`s right leg in a most unseemly fashion. In the end a bucket of water did the trick.

The Brindle Hong Kong Pairs & The Cyril Heath Memorial Handicap
These two competitions were played
over several weeks culminating in the final of The Brindle Hong Kong Pairs being played on 2nd March between Rod and Lyn Band v Cicely Pickers and Maureen Stakes. The first 8 ends were fiercely contested with the score being 10 9 to Rod and Lyn. Then Rod and Lyn hit a rich vein of form and took the next 5 ends to lead 19 - 11. Cicely and Maureen never gave up and fought back gallantly to win the next 4 ends. Rod and Lyn, however, maintained their lead and after 18 ends won the final 20 -18.
All four bowlers were worthy finalists and the spectators were treated to some excellent bowling. Congratulations to Rod and Lyn and commiserations to Cicely and Maureen. The final of the Cyril Heath Memorial Handicap was played on 6th March between Doreen Sands and Jean Smallwood who both had fantastic semi finals and thoroughly deserved to be in the final. Jean had a nail biting semi final against Judy Abel and Doreen also had a tough semi final beating David Schofield. Doreen took an early lead and after 12 ends was leading 16 - 6. Jean hung in and won 3 out of the next 4 ends and was 2 down for Doreen to win the match when she saved one shot with her last bowl on the 19th end. Sadly for Jean it wasn’t enough and Doreen finally won the match 24 - 12. Congratulations to Doreen and once again commiserations to Jean. Well done ladies and many thanks to all markers and umpires in the two competitions.

URCAL GOLF SOCIETY
Urcal Golf Society took twenty members to Camposol on Saturday 7th March to contest the Urcal Challenge Cup. The conditions were good with only a little wind and bright sunshine, however the greens were hard and not very receptive which made it difficult to hold the greens with anything other than a wedge. The scores reflected the difficulty with only one player playing to his handicap. The winner, showing good form after a lean spell was Stan Whitty with a score of 36 Stableford points with Captain Steve Dodd taking second place with 33 points. Fourth placed Barry Kilby and Trevor Nicholson were the only other players to score over thirty with 33 & 31 respectively. Nearest the pin on hole number 5 was won by Garry Funnell but no-
one managed to hold the green on hole number 13 for the other nearest the pin prize. The remaining prize for nearest the pin in two shots on hole number 8 resulted in a very unusual situation with two players, Stan Witty and Steve Dodd with exactly the same distance. There was only one two on the day which went to Trevor Nicholson. Our next game will be at Alboran on the 21st March and anyone wishing to join the society or in the first instance play as a guest should contact our Captain Steve Dodd on 608 238 827 you will be made to feel most welcome.

Almería and Villarreal could not manage to break the deadlock, despite the fact that the Andalusian side made more of an effort to take the three points. UD Almería and Villarreal CF drew 0-0 on matchday 27 of the Liga BBVA. It was an important point for the visitors as they were trying to keep some energy in store for the return leg of the UEFA European League, while the draw means little for the home side who enjoyed the best chances of the game. The Andalusian side, aware of the need to get points, were well ordered from the start and faced up to a Villarreal side that was not playing at its strongest. Giovani dos Santos had the first chance of the game, but Almería reacted and

tried to attack however an attentive Sergio Asenjo saved his men from conceding. Once again, Thievy tried his luck but could not get the ball into the visitor’s net. When Juan Ignacio Martínez were looking good, Mauro dos Santos took down Giovani when he was left one-on-one against the goalkeeper, and was subsequently sent off just before the break. Despite being down to ten men in the second half, Almería upped their game and once more had the best chances although they were unable to make the most of them. Also, the Villarreal player Jaume Costa was sent off and once again things were even on the pitch at the Juegos Mediterráneos stadum. Tomer Hemed, for the home side and Denis Cheryshev, for Villarreal tired intensely in the final stages but could not find the reward. The score line did not change from 0-0 leaving the home fans with a bitter taste in their mouth after seeing how their side deserved to win the game. Source: http://www.lfp.es
