Frankie’s Raise the Roof for MACS
On Comic relief night, Friday 13th March, Alan and Shelly the owners of Frankie’s Bar, Vera Playa, held another fun night in aid of MACS. DJ Steve King, dressed as a pink fairy, kept the evening going with extraordinary flair making it a night to remember. Guests were dancing on the tables, Alan was dancing on his bar and The Bell Enders performed another hilarious routine with many a clanger dropped. The Tena Ladies performed one of their outrageous dance routines and there was a triumphant reading of a tongue twisting poem full of risqué spoonerisms. The evening was sponsored by three local companies, Ibex who supplied the auction hampers, Totus Financial who supplied 100 Euros in cash for the top raffle prize and Luxury Almeria who donated an Elvis gold disc limited edition for auction. Frankie’s Bar gave the second prize of a drink per day for 90 days. Richard Shanley from Spectrum won the 100 Euros in the raffle but had left instructions that if his ticket won it was to be re drawn. The re drawn ticket was owned by DJ Steve King who then donated the 100 Euros to MACS. All the guests gave generously and had a good time. Several very

generous donations were made quietly without fuss and with sincere gratitude for the work MACS does. The Amount raised by the event was an astounding 1500 Euros. MACS now has four shops, Albox, Mojacar, Turre and the new Huercal Overa shop which opened in November 2014. Supporting people with cancer and their relatives or carers MACS offers both practical and emotional support. It is a registered charity and as such is totally dependent upon the commitment of our unpaid volunteers and donations from the public to provide assistance when it is needed. Valley of Almanzora). Even though we all congratulate or what it has been achieved, we also should agree that “ the owners do not want compensation, homeowners want their houses “, and to reach so, the final solution is inexorably a new LOUA. The Andalusian PP asks the Andalusian PSOE to show the same willingness to negotiate and seek agreements for the benefit of those affected, and to support the proposal of the PP as soon as the new Andalusian Parliament is constituted to halt the demolitions, to do the repeal of the law on Urban Planning of Andalucía ( LOUA ) and to promote the development of a new fairer planning law in order to fix the problem and especially to avoid producing this kind of circumstances. I hope this will help to clarify the actual situation, also, I would like to remind all members of AUAN that it takes more than two or three years to build 250.000 “illegal” houses, and that the party that has been running Andalucía and has had the capacity to change the law for the last 32 years is the Andalusian Socialist party. Dear Editor, In regard to the press release published by AUAN last 15th March 2015 on the amendment approved by the Senate last 11th of March to halt the demolition of the “ illegal” housing until buyers are compensated, as a member of the PP party, I would like to state the following: Last 11th of March the PP ( who has the majority of the Senate) brought forth an amendment previously negotiated between PP and PSOE during the reform process of the Penal Code, which allows judges to halt the demolition of the “ illegal” housing until the necessary guarantees for the compensation payment are given. This amendment will help to mitigate the consequences of the application of socialist Urban Planning of Andalusia. Although the demolition of “illegal “ homes ( 250.000 ) will be paralyzed until buyers are compensated; there is still a problem for households out of Andalucía’s Urban Planning, which will not have a solution until the Andalusian PSOE agrees to modify the law that gives rise to the problem, the LOUA ( in Almería 17.000 houses, especially in the

Holy Week...
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is elaborately celebrated each year in Spain. This is the week preceding Easter Sunday or Pascua. Despite the serious symbolism of the week, the city is extremely vibrant and busy throughout. Regular department stores and little shops are often closed for the week's events, but the restaurants and bars of Sevilla remain full of people. Everyone comes out for the festivities of Semana Santa. Each afternoon during the week, 17th century
floats bearing imagenes of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, emerge from the old Sevillan churches and process through the streets for hours and hours until finally snaking their way back to the church from which they came. Costaleros bear the weight of these enormous floats, while penitentes, both large and small, lead and follow the float bearing traditional capirotes and candles. The eerie and sorrowful flamenco hymns, written in minor keys, are played by the Semana Santa bands to set the desparing tone of the processions. The hymns of the band, the wailing saeta singers, and the cries of the pregoneros who bring the story of Jesus's crucifixion, can be heard from miles away. Sharing in the deeply rooted Christian traditions on this very special week is definitely worth your while.
Los Procesiones During the processions, a man or woman will often burst out in a saeta, and the entire procession comes to a halt until the song is finished. The singers are sometimes part of the procession but other times they stand on the balcony of a second story and sing over the massive crowd below. The Cofradias must plan the procession so that the timing of the saeta and the stopping of the floats are perfectly coordinated. The music of Semana Santa is usually in minor keys and is obviously extremely sorrowful. The brassy instruments like trumpets and saxophones help most in creating this sound.
Cofradías-The Organizers Cofrades or Cofradías, "brotherhoods" in English, are religious associations that care for the images of Jesus Christ and Mary throughout the year while planning the next Semana Santa events and celebrations for their city. These associations meet both
Why the Scary Outfits...?
Preparation
The preparation for Semana Santa is much more in-depth than meets the eye. Thousands of visitors come from all over the world to see the Holy Week processions of Spain, and especially in places like Sevilla and surrounding areas of Andalucía. There are official mapped out routes for each procession of the week, and someone is in charge of organizing police and other security to work throughout this holiday to maintain the peace. Also important, are the cleaning crews each night that come through after each procession and clear litter from the streets. Seating is another aspect. Some municipal authorities provide special theatre type seating for certain processions whose routes follow main streets. This seating must be booked well in advance and can be quite costly. Members of the Cofradias also coordinate groups of men to carry the crosses and lanterns of the procession and most importantly, to carry the huge floats upon their backs. Weeks and even months before Easter, it is not uncommon to run into a group of 30 men walking closely together in sync, bearing heavy replica floats upon their backs, practicing intently for the real week to arrive.
individually and separately throughout the year. They can be considered the heart of Holy Week. The cofrades were formed in the 16th century to plan Holy Week. They abide by strict regulations that ensure they are true Catholics and do not include pagan traditions in their Holy Week events. Each of these groups takes their
task extremely seriously, as they organize themselves into groups with hierarchy and committees. They guard the elaborate figures of Jesus and the Virgin Mary and other saints. Each year, tedious care is used to prepare the best new custom clothing for the figures.
The “Nazarenos” or “Penitentes” may initially catch Americans off gaurd, as their costumes resemble those worn by the Ku Klux Klan. These costumes actually have no sinister meaning. The Spanish reasoning for wearing these costumes is completely different than that of the KKK. The coneshaped “capirote” symbolizes a rising toward the heavens. The Penitentes are seeking forgiveness for their sins, and the shape of the capirotes signify their penance and yearning to be closer to the heavens. They hide their identities as they mourn the pain and suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross. On Easter Sunday, each person removes his capirote in jubilation of Jesus's resurrection from the dead. Nazarenos are traditionally all male, but in recent years, many young girls and women have begun to wear the costumes. No one can decipher between males and females behind the disguise.

process will continue whatever happens with climate change. Even if the Arctic continues to be one of the fastestwarming regions of the world, it will always be plunged into bitterly cold polar dark every winter. And year-by-year, for all kinds of natural reasons, there’s huge variety of the state of the ice. So what does this new record for the lowest level of winter ice actually mean? For a start, it does not automatically follow that a record amount of ice will melt this summer. More important for determining the size of the annual thaw is the state of the weather as the midnight sun approaches and temperatures rise. But over the more than 30 years of satellite records, scientists have observed a clear pattern of decline, decade-by-decade. So at some point this century the summers are on course to be clear of ice, opening up new shipping lanes, making it easier to access the region’s oil and gas and possibly also altering the path of the jet stream that drives our weather. So the matter of when all this might happen is the subject of intense research. Meanwhile, at the other end of the world, researchers are puzzling over the growth of sea-ice around parts of Antarctica. Overall, there is a fall in the global total of sea-ice but with lots of questions about its pace.Commenting on the data, Alexander Shestakov, director of the WWF Global Arctic Programme, said: “This is not a record to be proud of. “Low sea ice can create a series of reactions that further threaten the Arctic and the rest of the globe.” bbc.co.uk

Sea ice in the Arctic Ocean has fallen to the lowest recorded level for the winter season, according to US scientists. The maximum this year was 14.5 million sq km, said the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado in Boulder. This is the lowest since 1979, when satellite records began. A recent study found that Arctic sea ice had thinned by 65% between 1975 and 2012. Bob Ward of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics said: “The gradual disappearance of ice at the poles is having profound consequences for people, animals and plants in the polar regions, as well as around the world, through sea level rise.” The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said the maximum level of sea ice for winter was reached this year on 25 February and the ice was now beginning to melt as the Arctic moved into spring. The amount measured at the end of February is 130,000 sq km below the previous record winter low, measured in 2011. An unusually warm February in parts of Alaska and Russia may have contributed to the dwindling sea ice, scientists believe. Researchers will provide the monthly average data for March in early April, which is viewed as a better indicator of climate effects. NSIDC scientist Walt Meier said: “The amount of ice at the maximum is a function of not only the state of the climate but also ephemeral and often local weather conditions. “The monthly value smoothes out these weather effects and so is a better reflection of climate effects.” The Arctic Ocean freezes every winter and much of the seaice then thaws every summer, and that

Both individuals and businesses can support local businesses, all you have to do is: ...whenever you can, buy from a local business as opposed to buying outside of your region. These days, when most people do the majority of their shopping in giant supermarkets, out of town shopping complexes or city centre malls, it can be difficult to draw attention to a small business trading locally. But with concerns being raised over community cohesion, social inclusion and the environment, the local business has never been more important. It’s down to enterprising business owners like you to promote the importance of supporting local businesses so that the public understand why it matters and how it can benefit whole communities. In order to tackle the trend toward supermarket shopping, it’s important to understand why people choose it. Research indicates that the reasons they most frequently cite are the variety of products available and the convenience of having them all in one place.

Do you support local businesses? Challenge this directly through poster campaigns and advertisements which emphasise the variety offered by small independent businesses, contrasted with the way that monopolies tend toward homogenisation. Remind people how convenient it is to have a lot of small shops offering different products and services located in the area, and how convenient it is to be able to shop close to home. It’s okay to admit that big business has the edge in some areas if you stress that there’s a cost to this. For instance, you could have a poster featuring a pint of milk which acknowledges that it’s cheaper in the supermarket but points out how much less time is spent if it can be picked up nearby, so that it still pays to shop locally. If your business purchases its products locally, it’s worth emphasising this - shopping with you means supporting local producers and cutting down on the environmental costs of long distance transport. If you sell food, it also means getting fresher produce. You can also point out that local businesses mean local jobs and increased opportunities for local people, encouraging the young to stay in the area and become positively involved with the community. It cuts out the daily commute for many people and makes their working lives more pleasant

in Roquetas, thePuntas Entinas-Sabinar Natural Park to the west of the town and the Parque Las Salinas. In particular the Puerta Verde de Roquetas de Mar is a recently opened short route in the Las Salinas area that enables beach users, walkers and cyclists to enjoy use of the Cañada Real de la Costa without encountering motorized traffic. It is part of a 15 kilometre pedestrian route between Aguadulce and the eastern end of the Puntas Entinas-Sabinar Natural Park. Include this natural park in the expedition and the more intrepid walker can make a near 30 kilometre trek along the coastal strip, which is part of the unspoilt coastline of the Costa Almería. Roquetas is also suitable for the less able because, despite the close proximity of some of the highest mountains in Spain, the town itself is flat. During the summer months, Roquetas Town Council puts on numerous open-air concerts. These performances cater for all tastes including as they do flamenco, pop, jazz and classical music as well as shows for children. Entrance is free. There are occasional free concerts at the theatre that opened around five years ago. However, we do have to pay to see artists like Montserrat Caballe and Jose Carreras who have appeared there. With all it has to offer, Roquetas de Mar has become one of the major tourist attractions on the Mediterranean coast. http://www.unique-almeria.com

Fatigue 8 energy stealers!!
Not sure what’s causing your fatigue? Here are some common energy zappers that may be to blame – and tips on how to overcome them.
Being a couch potato Sitting in one position for long periods of time can sap your energy, even if you’re watching the TV or using the computer. Your body equates the stillness with going to sleep. Solution: stretch often, get up and walk around, away from your desk or sofa. Frequent breaks will keep your body alert!
Poor posture wastes energy A lot of your energy goes on keeping you upright. Bad posture – such as hunching forwards and slumping in your seat – puts your spine out of alignment. The more out of balance your spine is, the more your muscles have to work to compensate.
Crash dieting makes you tired While it will boost your energy to lose excess weight, going on Solution: whether you're moving, sitting or standing still, a crash diet isn’t helpful. Very low-calorie diets, especially try to make sure that your head is lined up over your body ones that give you less than 850 calories a day, will make – not sticking out in front of it. you have a young child, you work from home or you’ve been driven indoors by the cold days and long, dark nights of winter. However, lack of light and fresh air is a key cause of tiredness. Solution: get out for a 10-minute walk at least once during the day, or when you're most tired. Even if it’s cloudy, you’ll be exposed to more natural light than inside and you’ll feel more alert. If you simply can't get out the door, a few minutes in a room filled with natural light may also help.

Sugary breakfasts, such as processed cereals, pastries, muffins and toast with sugary spreads, will give you a It’s all too easy to become quick surge of energy as your blood sugar peaks. www.soltimes.com Solution: to get a steady release of energy all morning long, eat a breakfast that’s based on unrefined starch. For example, home-made porridge with semi-skimmed milk and a little honey, wholemeal cereal with fruit sliced over it, or an egg with wholemeal or granary toast. Try to choose breakfast cereals that are wholegrain and low in salt and sugar.
Constant worrying drains energy If you’re fretting about something all day long, your heart rate and blood pressure rise, and your muscles tighten, leading to fatigue and aches. Solution: set some time aside to concentrate on your worries. Try to think of positive solutions, then put the worries out of your mind. Schedule that dental appointment for first thing in the morning, so you don't spend all day fretting about it.
Exercising too much Regular exercise is good for you, but working out intensively every day may not be good for your energy levels, especially if you’re a beginner or trying to get back in shape. Solution: take a day off between strenuous bouts of exercise. Beware of leaving more than two or three days between sessions, or you might fall out of the habit.

HOW TO OVERCOME THE TIRED EYES Not only body that can feel tired, but all members can feel tired body, including the eyes. Eyes may also experience fatigue. There are so many causes of the eyes become tired as too often remained watching the screen, too long to read, and live a less healthy lifestyle, including staying up. Eyes are experiencing fatigue can usually be seen from both eyelids that look swollen and not just the head also will feel heavier and decreased stamina always wanted to sleep or drowsiness. Tired eyes can be said for other disorders such as eye minus or cylinder. If you experience these symptoms, you are required to use auxiliaries such as glasses to help all your activities. If you are experiencing eyestrain, you’ll want to listen to the advice I give below. 1. Compress Eyes I recommend it to you if you have tired eyes quickly was to compress your eyes, so keep your eyes in a fresh condition. With that, hopefully fatigue on your eyes will be lost. What did Materials need For Compressing Eyes? Thick cloth soft textured, Cold water to taste, How do I compress the eye? How to compress the eye is very easy and not too complicated, you take a thick fabric that has a soft texture, or you can use a thick towel. After that, the fabric is dipped into cold water then squeeze. However, I would advise not to squeeze too dry. Then close your eyes and compress cloth to your eyes a few times until your eyes do not feel tired anymore. 2. Wash Eye Often we wash the face, but rarely to wash the eyes. The same feeling right eyewash Myspace contact with eyes too! To wash the eyes of a different way to wash your face. To wash the eyes, please open your eyes wide, and then dropped into cold water on your eyes, and then please blink-blink your eyes. While doing this way the eyes will feel a little sore or hot, but it can reduce the effects of tired eyes. 3. Using Cold Spoon To reduce the effects of tired eyes you can use a spoon to eat as an alternative tool. Hehe is a bit strange, the spoon should be made to eat but this time the spoon is useful to restore the performance of your eyes. How do I? It’s easy really. You can simply insert the spoon into the fridge and wait for 2-3 minutes. After that please stick to the concave part of the spoon to your eyes, wait until the spoon does not feel cold anymore. Repeat this several times. This method is proven to reduce fatigue on the eyes. 4. Using Sliced Fruit You can use slices of fruit to refresh your eyes. However, not all fruit slices can be used only a few pieces that can be used, among others, cucumber, strawberries, and potatoes. How do I? The trick, you can simply slice the cucumber, strawberry, or potatoes and then input into the fridge waiting to cool so that more fresh fruit. After that put the fruit slices to your eyes, wait until 15-20 minutes.

The shorter days of winter disrupt your sleep/waking cycle, leading to fatigue. Less sunlight in winter also means your brain produces more of a hormone called melatonin, which makes you sleepy.
Hypnotherapy can help with many long standing issues; bereavement, anger, low self esteem, confidence, loss of sleep, relaxation, pain relief, smoking, eating habits and many more.
Solution: Get outdoors into natural daylight as much as possible, do some exercise every day and eat the right foods for energy, such as fruit and veg.

5. Flashing Flashing is a simple and easy thing to do. However, by way of flashing will reduce eye fatigue effects. With flashing eyes will smeared by natural fluid that makes the eyes refreshed. 6. Using Tea Pouch Teabag can be used as an alternative to refresh the eye. The way how? It is very easy, all it takes is a tea bag that has been used to brew tea, but in pristine condition are not mixed sugar and cold conditions. Close your eyes and paste the tea bag to the eye, wait for 5-10 minutes until your eyes feel more refreshed. 7. Set Visibility Maybe this is often experienced by everyone. Not too much attention to the benchmark visibility. Because the visibility is too close, it will make our eyes tired. So I encourage you to adjust the viewing angle of the eye. Well, that’s all the tips for caring for eyes to be more healthy and fresh from the symptoms of tired eyes. The American War
As a very late 40 something westerner; over the years American news stories and Hollywood films have drip fed me the story of the 'American' War (we call it the Vietnam War) from USA’s own (losing) point of view. In Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon as it’s also known, stands the War Remnants Museum which paints a different picture from my earlier diet of Platoon, Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket etc. The museum is set over 3 floors and to do it justice at least 4 hours are needed. The stories and facts are so harrowing that time needs to be taken to take it all in. It’s refreshing and tearfully poignant to hear the 'home' sides account. America was involved financially from the 1950’s supporting the French as they struggled to keep hold of Vietnam or Indochina as they called it. Vast mineral wealth was at stake and American leaders are on record saying they were happy to pay millions of dollars to France to keep their supply routes open. Successive American governments were also terrified that ‘commies’ would slowly

NON-RESIDENT INCOME TAX We are still receiving many enquiries about non - resident income tax. (What is it? / Do we really have to pay it if we do not rent out our property? / What do you recommend we do if we have never paid it?) To avoid any doubts: If you are non resident of Spain and own a property you must file a non resident income tax return every year even if you have never rented out the property. Please note that the tax office has no obligation of informing you of
this. Do not confuse this tax with rates (IBI), which is a local tax and nothing to do with non-resident tax. If you have never paid it I recommend you approach a solicitor like ourselves to take care of putting things back into good order, before they claim it with surcharges or worse still consider that if you are not filing it you must be a tax resident and come after you for your worldwide income and fining you for not filing a 720 declaration of worldwide assets obligatory for residents.

take over that part of the world. By the time France was defeated; America was paying 80% of their military budget. Then in 1965 CIA it’s now acknowledged; faked an attack in the Gulf of Tonkin on an American Warship by the North Vietnamese navy which led to America initially sending 20,000 ground troops to Vietnam. By 1969 at the height of US involvement; 540,000 US Troops were in Vietnam. All in all over 8 million US troops served in the war. The devastation the US led coalition had and still has on Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia by way of deaths, injuries, environmental damage and side effects caused by the bombing and use of chemical weapons was and is awful. About 3 million Vietnamese were killed during the war; most of them civilians. Agent Orange we have heard of but maybe not its deadlier cousins Agents’ Blue and White. Over 9 years America sprayed 75 million litres of defoliant. In the process they destroyed 5 million acres of mangrove forest and millions of acres of farmland. Soldiers were told that
by spraying they were stopping the enemy from eating when in fact all it did was starve civilians. Figures by the Red Cross show that a million people in the country still have health problems due the terrible health effects these herbicides cause. The then leader of Vietnam Ho Chi Minh told America that they were not afraid to die fighting to free their country war and for every American death they would suffer ten deaths but America would tire first of the losses. In all over 58,000 Americans died with another 300,000 injured. The Viet Cong were not Commies that was a rude nickname thought up to paint them in a bad light across the world. In fact they were a collection of all sorts of social and intellectual groups including socialist and yes communists; fighting basically to reclaim their homeland from first the French (1945-1954) then again from France/America until 1973. In fact the Viet Cong had less part in the conflict as time went on as the conventional
N o r t h Vietnamese Army took over military actions. Of course the museum’s story is weighted against America and France – that’s how all victors write history but in this case there is something more. A sense of just how wrong the deeds of the colonial powers were. There’s a lot of space given over to thanking the vast support network worldwide that campaigned for the war to stop. On the top floor is a huge photographic exhibition honouring the lives of all the photo journalists that documented the war in its various stages. Robert Capa (co - founder of Magnum) is immortalised here as in 1954 he died from a landmine, as did many others. In the corner of the gardens is a mock up of Coconut Tree Prison on Phu Quoc Island. But that is a story for another time.

Beware underlying fees on offshore bonds
Many investors are unaware of high charges that can eat into their wealth, according to finance experts Expat investors using offshore bonds as a way to boost their wealth could be paying nearly £89,000 in fees on a £100,000 investment over 20 years, it has been claimed. This would leave them with an annual investment return equivalent to less than 0.1 of a percentage point. Analysis by financial services firm AES International has found that many offshore bonds being sold to expats are potentially inappropriate, and “will struggle to make money for clients because they are weighed down by heavy and undisclosed underlying fees paid to advisers, product providers and investment managers”, according to chief executive Sam Instone. He added: “Unfortunately there is a lack of transparency within the offshore investment bond market, and many clients are therefore unaware that these plans can be opaquely loaded with high charges. This makes it very unlikely they will see any real returns.” The figures calculated by AES International sugggest that on an offshore bond, an investor can expect to pay between 0.5pc and 1.5pc of the investment value annually to the bond provider, a fixed £400 annual charge and a 0.5pc to 1.5pc "establishment charge" for the first five to 10 years, paid to the adviser. In addition, they may also pay an initial commission to the fund manager of 4-8pc and an annual management charge ranging from 1-3pc. Mr Instone said: “To illustrate the point: a portfolio of £100,000 growing at a rate of 5pc per year for 20 years would only actually achieve a return of 0.08pc per year, due to the typical underlying charges. This would leave the portfolio at a value of £107,768 after the 20-year term and mean charges of £88,698 were paid. The lack of regulation in the offshore market place can make it extremely difficult for expats to

identify exactly how much they are paying in fees for their investments, according to Anna Sofat, founder of Addidi Wealth. She recommended that expat investors ask their adviser to explain all of the charges applicable to any investment product in full so that they are clear at the outset. While many offshore advisers are unregulated, the UK adviser market is heavily regulated, and it is possible to find a UK-based adviser that specialises in offshore advice, said Ms Sofat, so you can effectively have the best of both worlds. Rose Pruning
Winter time is the correct time to prune those roses in your garden. While there is a great deal of disagreement among rose experts regarding how and when to prune roses, it is generally agreed that most mistakes will grow out very quickly and it is better to make a good effort at pruning roses than to let them grow rampant.

The Plot Thickens
Rodriquez, after his defeat at the polls and subsequent loss of control over the affairs of Alqueria tried to break the coalition party of Manuela and Loco Paco. After attempting to ingratiate himself with Paco, which led to failure and the annihilation of a regiment of Saharan Dung Beetles, Rodriquez decided to start a sleaze campaign against the Prime Minister Manuela. Rodriquez’s politics are ultra right-wing as is his outlook on life, although he only applies his standards to others and never himself. He therefore thought that starting rumours about Manuela’s private life and in particular her prowess with the opposite sex would force her to resign. Unfortunately for Rodriquez he couldn’t even begin to imagine the antics Manuela got up to with her retinue of men friends. His rumours fell far short of the actual truth. Manuela, feeling that his accusations lessened her kudos with the opposite sex took him to one side to ‘mark his card’. After a torrid and worryingly detailed account of her latest sexual liaison Rodriquez decided that her truth was certainly stranger than his fiction. These two failures to break the new Alquerian leadership convinced Rodriquez that he should remove the ‘velvet gloves’ and take more direct action. He mooted the problem with his evil associates in the back room of the La Golondrina Verde. The taberna is exclusively used by the Hillpeople and therefore ‘friendly territory’. The ‘Achilles Heel’ of Alqueria was sought. The one thing that the entire population relied on and would therefore be dissatisfied if deprived of it. A dissatisfied population would ultimately blame the
spring forward
government. Rodriquez would then restore whatever it was and be the saviour of the Village Republic. After several nights without sleep Rodriquez found his answer. Remitroot, he would somehow stop the supply of Remitroot. The fact that this solution was so obvious gives some clue as to the man’s intellect. Without Remitroot and the range of products derived from it Alqueria could not function. Remitroot Whisky and wine kept half the population in a state of permanent intoxication. Loco Paco relies on ‘Remitroot a la Plancha’ to feed himself and his pet Saharan Dung Beetle Benjy. In this form Remitroot is an hallucinogenic, this of course explains a great deal. Antonio Poyato not only drinks, eats and wears Remitroot products he lags his water pipes with it as well. Manuela relies on Remitroot’s properties as an aphrodisiac to keep her men friends in tiptop condition, while an occasional libation of the liqueur loosens her up ready for a night of concerted action. Will Rodriquez succeed in his dastardly plan? How will the not so gentle folk of Alqueria survive without Remitroot? We shall see?
Each year, in the wee hours of a Sunday morning in March, 60 minutes vanish from the clock and the time reappears each year in November! No, it’s not a magic trick — it’s Daylight Saving Time! Daylight Saving Time (or “Summer Time,” as it’s known in many parts of the world) was created to make better use of the long sunlight hours of the summer. By “springing” clocks forward an hour in March, we move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. On the first Sunday in November, we “fall back” and rewind our clocks to return to Standard Time. But where did Daylight Saving Time come from? And how is it useful? The idea was first suggested in an essay by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, and later proposed to British Parliament by Englishman William Willett 1907. However, it did not become a standard practice in the United States until 1966. Daylight Saving Time was originally instituted in the United States during World War I and World War II in order to take advantage of longer daylight hours and save energy for the war production. In the years after World War II, individual states and communities decided whether they wanted to continue observing Daylight Saving Time and when to do so. This meant some cities were an hour behind others even though they were only separated by a few miles on a map. In order to minimize the confusion, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966, which standardized the length of Daylight Saving Time for the country. Daylight Saving Time is most helpful to those who live farther from the equator, where daylight hours are much longer in the summer than in the winter. In locations closer to the equator, daylight hours
Prima Donnas The laptop started it. It decided, for no apparent reason, that it would censure my sent emails. It was quite happy to allow me to receive emails from the entire world and his cousin, and to reply to the entire world and his cousin as well as his aunts and uncles. But it refused to countenance communication to 2 perfectly blameless friends. 4 Times I sent emails to these honest and upright citizens, only for them to come back as ‘undeliverable’. Eventually, however, I wore down its resistance, and it suddenly decided that it could, after all, allow me to make contact. But did it explain itself, or apologise? No. Then the printer had an attack of the vapours. It willingly printed out something for Pete, yet minutes later, when I wanted it to do the same for me, it announced that it couldn’t possibly! Why not? I asked. Because my magenta’s empty, it replied pictorially. I only want black, and you’ve got an almost full black. I pointed out. It pursed its lips and tossed it’s hair, or would have, if it had had lips and hair. I’ve got to have pink. It insisted. How can you expect me to print black if I haven’t got pink? So unreasonable! I stared at it, lost to it’s logic. It went Tch, and sighed heavily. All right, I’ll get you pink! I got pink. It printed, though I still fail to see why pink is essential to black. Now it was the laptop’s turn again. I turned on the power on the plug, pushed its own integral power button, and waited
and nighttime hours are nearly the same in length throughout the year. That’s why many equatorial cities and countries do not participate in Daylight Saving Time. In the United States, there are only a few places that do not observe Daylight Saving Time, including parts of Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa. There are currently about 70 countries that participate in Daylight Saving Time, though not necessarily on the same schedule as the United States. Determining who recognizes Daylight Saving Time and when can sound like a very complicated math word problem. In Europe, Daylight Saving Time runs from the last Sunday in March through the first Sunday in October. In the southern hemisphere, where the summer season begins in December, Daylight Saving Time is recognized from December through March. Kyrgyzstan and Iceland observe Daylight Saving Time year-round; equatorial countries do not observe Daylight Saving Time at all. Advocates in support of Daylight Saving Time suggest that in addition to reducing crime and automobile accidents, extended daylight hours also improve energy conservation by allowing people to use less energy to light their businesses and homes. Opposing studies argue the energy saved during Daylight Saving Time is offset by greater energy use during the darker autumn and winter months. - See more at: http:// wonderopolis.org

The signal that it is dressed and ready is picture of a cute kitten, under which I have to type in my password. I checked the mouse was on, pulled out the keyboard and typed in my password. It ignored me completely – the kitten remained cute, and the password box remained blank. Maybe it hadn’t heard me, I thought. So I typed my password again. Actually I typed it in half a dozen times, but each result met with the same blank silence. Now what was the matter with it? ‘Pete’ I called. ‘The laptop is ignoring me. Have you done something to it?’ ‘Have you remembered to plug in the keyboard?’ Oh. No, I hadn’t. Well, it could have told me, couldn’t it? Blooming Prima Donna machines!

Instead of pushing them to the side of the plate, try incorporating greens into your favorite drinks and dishes.
Bring Them to Breakfast
Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and arugula are bursting with nutrients. Eating more of them has been shown to help detoxify your body, reduce inflammation, and fight disease—but we’re not always eager to make them the star of our plate. Here, we’ve gathered up our favorite healthy recipes that make greens shine in tasty new ways. Starting your day with a serving of greens ensures you’re fueling your body with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Eggs are a great blank slate for greens—they pair well with just about any variety.

Pack Into Pesto
Use tender, silky greens in soups and stews, especially during the winter when comfort foods are a dinnertime staple. Kale works well in Italian soups, while chard gives bean-based broths a boost.
Toss Into Pasta
Kale, spinach, and arugula all taste great stirred into pasta dishes. Even if the recipe doesn’t call for it, greens can be easily tossed in at the end of the cooking time for added nutrients, color, and flavor.
Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cups sliced leek (about 2 large) 12 ounces fingerling potatoes, cut in half lengthwise (about 4 cups) 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 1/4 teaspoons Spanish smoked paprika, divided 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper, divided 4 cups thinly sliced trimmed Swiss chard (about 1 bunch) 4 large eggs 1/4 cup (1 ounce) shredded Gruyère cheese method Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add oil to pan. Add leek; cook 8 minutes, stirring frequently. Add potatoes and garlic; cook 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in 1 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add chard; cook 4 minutes, stirring constantly. Using a spoon, push potato mixture aside to make 4 egg-size spaces. Crack 1 egg into each space; sprinkle remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, remaining 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon paprika over eggs. Cover and cook 3 minutes; sprinkle cheese over potato mixture. Cover and cook 2 minutes or until egg yolks are lightly set.

January’s end of month winds caused havoc
roquetas - COMMUNITY NEWS
At the end of January, hurricane winds swept over much of the Andalusian region causing much damage. The shelter suffered from these ferocious attacks and when calm finally returned, it was time to take stock of the damages.
Fortunately no helpers or dogs were injured and that was the most important thing! However there was quite a bit of material damage done to structures and dog huts. An old and much cherished pepper tree, the shade of which was appreciated by the dogs during the sizzling heat of the summer months, was torn apart. One of the tin roofs was torn off one of the huts and swept some 30 metres through the air until it was dropped off in front of a kennel. The only kennels that stood up to the storm undamaged were the ones that had been rebuilt during autumn with sturdy materials.

The biggest surprise for the astonished shelter people came when they suddenly became aware that a lovely female Galgo born in 2010, that they have named BRANDY, had been dropped over the fence into a kennel. ‘BRANDY is a very gentle Galgo and at this time she is the only Galgo left at the shelter as DORIAN and PILUCA found forever homes during January. It is sincerely hoped that the stay of this pretty Galgo will be very brief and she will

The Casual Vacancy by J.K.Rowling
Film Review “We are the guardians of something unique. We are the custodians and the stewards of a shining principle. We do not turn our backs and look away from people in need.” The tv drama was written by Sarah Phelps and produced by Ruth KenleyLetts. Rowling herself was one of four executive producers. Set in what seems an idyllic setting, fictional Pagford turns out to be a village divided between the privileged do-gooders, the hypocrites in society with the trappings of middle-class affluence compared to the working class and their dodgy deals and drug abuse living in the Fields, a council estate on the doorstep of middle England. It might be said that Phelps and Rowling share a passion for social justice which is a myth in “The Casual Vacancy.” Don’t expect any. The story is heart-breaking. Phelps rewrote the ending which was bleak and too devastating for words. She went in search of a redemptive moment after the tragedy. Just compare the film with the novel and you will realise what I mean by bleak and grim. “We have but a short time to live. Like a flower we blossom and then wither. Like a shadow we flee and never stay. In the midst of life, we are in death.” The only honourable man, Barry Fairbrother, a solicitor who believes in the vision of Sweetlove House which was bequeathed by Sir Phineus Sweetlove 150 years ago to the people of the Fields. More recently the Fields has become synonymous with drug abuse and petty crime. Howard and Shirley Mollison, pretentious snobs but extremely influential through their bullying tactics represent the Parish
35
Council and want the house to be turned into a hotel and spa. It is virtually dismissed as AOB on the agenda and Barry goes ballistic and is supported by two other council members, Tess Wall and Dr Jawanda. They want a proper discussion on the use of the house. He accuses the Mollisons of “herding people into ghettoes because they don’t fit the aesthetic” and even compares it to fighting fascism. This is nakedly political and dirty. We see evidence of Barr y’s humanity (played by Rory Kinnear) and social conscience when he collects Terri Weedon from the police cell and drives her home. He cares for Krystal, her vulnerable and damaged daughter who is the chief carer for her heroin addicted mother and her young brother Robbie, a seemingly tough and precocious 16 year old, encouraging her to go to school for maths and counselling then offering her an apprenticeship working for him where she’ll have her own desk. When Terri breaks down the bedroom door, stealing house-keeping money, some of Krystal’s clothes and her little telly, to refuel her addiction, Barry repairs the door and gives Krystal money to get something to eat. When Krystal feels she cannot go on any longer it is Barry who pulls her through. He also forks out £600 for a new door. On the evening to celebrate his wedding anniversary he collapses after suffering an aneurysm and dies.
There were warnings at the start when he crashed to the floor after cleaning his teeth, unconscious. He thought it was the beer that was making him feel ill. An election is then held to fill this casual vacancy and initially there are 3 candidates, Barry’s step-brother Simon, an obnoxious man who bullies his children and who is involved in petty crime. He withdraws as soon as word gets round about his criminal activities. Colin Wall, the deputy head is a serious contender up against Miles Mollison, referred to as a “ventriloquist’s dummy sitting on Howard’s lap.” Sadly he is manipulated by his parents and made to be a laughing stock. His wife Samantha has been branded a failure by Shirley, her in law, as a wife as well as a mother. She enjoys telling her that her two daughters haven’t bonded with her and they have never loved her: “You couldn’t even sell whore’s knickers in that ridiculous shop.” There’s nothing nice about Shirley played by Julie McKenzie and even when she turns into a dithering wreck at the end she is still pathetic. Michael Gambon plays Howard, a meanspirited, uncharitable hypocrite who owns the local delicatessen and despises the plebs as he calls the working class: “They choose to stick needles in and rob decent folk.” He objects strongly to these junkies streaming through his
village suggesting: “We must raise the drawbridge and lower the portcullis.” He has a weight problem with overindulgence as well as a heart problem. A premonition of death on a number of occasions start to shake his confidence. He sees the ghost of Barry with his wingman, the Grim Reaper asking what his legacy will be. Howard’s answer is cheese and we are left with images of maggots crawling through the cheese in the shop. One gruesome image of Barry is with worms crawling through his eye holes. It reinforces death as being the greatest mystery which “yawns open briefly and then it is filled by us. Dead meat. It’s dark and it’s lonely. So lonely.” The ghost of Barry dominates the run up to the election with unflattering remarks on the council website, unearthing the skeletons rattling in people’s cupboards. Robbie Weedon is the biggest victim. His mother is a heroin addict and he is neglected. He has to rely on Krystal for his own survival. Treats are chips from the chippie and a slice of bread. He is surrounded by syringes and has to be locked in his room at night for his own safety. What kind of a life is that for a little boy? None. Yes, the dark undercurrents in this drama are worryingly frightening and show alarming shortcomings in social justice. Is this really a microcosm for English societies? The tv drama is available from Amazon. Publisher: Sphere. ISBN: 978-0-7515-5286-7. Novel.

Chinese state-owned China National Chemical (ChemChina) is to buy Italian tyre maker Pirelli in a deal which values the firm at €7.1bn (£5.1bn). The move is the latest in a string of takeovers in Italy by cash-rich Chinese buyers. The takeover gives ChemChina access to technology to make premium tyres and gives Pirelli greater access to the Chinese market. Pirelli shares were 2.56% higher at €15.62 on Monday on the news. ChemChina’s tyre making unit, China National Tire & Rubber, is to buy the 26.2% stake in Pirelli owned by Italian investment firm Camfin. It will then launch an offer for the remaining shares. The Bob Wright Cup
Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Bob Wright Cup which was played over several weeks culminating in the final being played on Friday 13th March between Janet and Ian Jackson. Janet took an early lead and was ahead 7 - 1 after 4 ends. Ian then got into his stride and after 11 ends the score was level at 9 - 9. The score changed on nearly every end after that and on the 20th end Ian was leading 16 - 15. Sadly for Janet she did not win another end after that and Ian went onto win the match 21 - 15. Congratulations to Ian and commiserations to Janet. As the final was between husband and wife thankfully there were no domestics and the final was played in a lovely spirit.

This weekend, Spain’s Marc Marquez begins the defence of his World MotoGP title in Losail, Qatar. • Lewis Hamilton will be aiming to make it two F1 wins in a row in the Malaysia Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur. • England play Lithuania in a 2016 European Championship qualifier. • New Zealand or South Africa will meet either Australia or India in cricket’s World Cup final. ----------------------------------------• Barcelona are four points clear of Real Madrid in La Liga after winning last Sunday’s El Clasico 2-1. • In the Premiership, Manchester City beat 10-man WBA 3-0; the second goal was the Blues’ 1,000th in the PL; Baggies’ defender Gareth McAuley was wrongly sentoff after 89 seconds. • Chelsea now lead the table by six points after winning 3-2 at Hull. • Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield after substitute Steven Gerrard was red-carded 38 seconds after half-time. This was NOT the fastest in the PL. • Arsenal with a brace by Olivier Giroud, won 2-1 at Newcastle. • At the bottom, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR and Leicester all lost, the latter 4-3 at Tottenham for whom Harry Kane hit a hat-trick. • Bournemouth beat Middlesbrough to return to the top of the Championship. • Bristol City lead PNE by ten points (83-73) at the top of League 1 and Burton Albion are five clear of Shrewsbury (76-71) in League 2. • A crowd of 72,315 saw Bristol City
between Brian Firth and Brendan Cullen on Saturday 14th March. The aim of the competition is to get the bowl within a yard of the jack to score a point. Needless to say on some ends there could be no points scored at all so the matches can be quite long as the winner has to score 21 points. The final was pretty evenly matched and after 22 ends the score was 9 - 8 to Brian. Brian however was playing the more consistently and maintained his lead throughout the match finally getting to the magical 21 points after 34 ends winning 21- 11. Congratulations to Brian and commiserations to Brendan. A wonderful final played between two very popular and respected members of the club.

ATHLETIC BILBAO 2 ALMERIA 1 Goals from Etxeita and Mikel Rico gave the hosts all three points despite Almería reducing the deficit through Balenziaga’s own goal. Athletic Club beat UD Almería 2-1 on matchday 28 in the Liga BBVA, giving Ernesto Valverde’s side their fifth consecutive victory which leaves them five points from the European spots. The Andalusians meanwhile, with 25 points, are looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone. The Bilbao side gave their opponents few chances in the game and came out with a lot of intensity and took the lead in the opening 10 minutes thanks to Xabi Etxeita’s header from Beñat Etxebarria’s corner. Ibai Gómez tried to add a second shortly afterwards but his venomous shot smashed against the crossbar. Athletic did not cease in their search for a second goal and found it through Mikel Rico, who spotted Julián Cuesta off his line and crafted a clever chip over the goalkeeper’s head to make it 2-0.

Almería could have reduced the deficit through Tomer Hemed but Gorka Iraizoz was equal to the effort. From then on the Basques kept on pelting Julián’s goal and the goalkeeper did well to keep the score at 2-0 going into the break. No sooner had the second half started when a shot from Welington Silva deflected off Mikel Balenziaga and beyond Iraizoz and into the net to put Juan Ignacio Martínez’s side back in the game. But Valverde’s side did not let their guard drop and Iñaki Williams, one of the best performers on the night, continued to create danger down the right hand side. The hosts took their foot off the gas towards the end of the game but they pick up another victory which takes them closer to qualifying for Europe again. lfp.es

Barcelona 2 Real Madrid 1
Luis Suarez scored a brilliant secondhalf winner as Barcelona maintained control of the Spanish title race by beating Real Madrid in a pulsating Clasico. Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out an early header from Jeremy Mathieu before Suarez struck to leave the hosts four points clear at the top of La Liga. Although Barca made the brighter start, Real soon got into the game and had the first big chance when Karim Benzema’s cross found Ronaldo unmarked at the far post, but he did not have much angle to work with and could only send his cushioned volley against the crossbar. Barca then went ahead after Suarez won a free-kick, Lionel Messi swung it into the middle and French centreback Mathieu arrived unmarked to send a perfectly placed header past the dive of Iker Casillas. But Real battled quickly back and a dramatic minute saw Suarez’s cross-shot present Neymar with a golden chance which he put straight at Casillas, before Real immediately broke and Benzema’s brilliant backheel found Ronaldo for a low stabbed finish. Real finished the opening period in the ascendancy as Gareth Bale had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside and Ronaldo forced a good save from Claudio Bravo with a thunderous longrange drive. The visiting team made a similarly strong start to the second half with an early chance for Benzema saved. But Barca then re-established the advantage with a decidedly route one goal as Brazil right-back Dani Alves delivered a long ball over the top, Suarez produced brilliant control and then steered a perfectly placed low

finish into the bottom left corner. The home team were dominant after that, squandering several chances to double their lead as Neymar ended a brilliant run by shooting over and then thrashed a shot wide after a pass from Messi, while Casillas did well to save from both Messi and Jordi Alba. Real had little answer and, aside from a deflected strike from Benzema which Bravo did well to save low to his left, they never seriously threatened an answer as a jubilant Nou Camp celebrated a well deserved win. Messi v Ronaldo - who won their personal duel? When the two players almost unanimously regarded as the best in the world go head to head, direct comparisons are inevitable and the verdict on this occasion is that although Messi didn’t score, he exerted a greater all-round impact than Ronaldo. The Argentine delivered a perfect free-kick into the penalty box for Mathieu’s headed opener and was the chief string-puller as his team ran riot in the second period, producing an especially delightful pass to create a late chance for Jordi Alba. Despite hitting the bar, scoring and bursting into life for the final stages of the first half, Ronaldo endured a largely frustrating night and did nowhere near enough to assist his team’s attempts to find a second-half leveller. Stats show Messi had 77 touches of the ball compared to Ronaldo’s 52, and that accurately reflects their overall influence on the game. bbc.com Milenaria AtLa Zubia 3 – 2 Celtic Pulianas C.F. C.D. Fernando Alonso reportedly cleared to travel to Malaysia McLaren’s Fernando Alonso has been cleared to travel to Malaysia for the second race of the Formula One season after passing medical tests in England, Spanish media reported on Sunday. The driver, who suffered concussion after crashing in testing in Barcelona last month, missed the season-opener in Australia on 15 March and has since had short and long-term memory tests and reflex checks in Cambridge to establish the extend of his recovery. However, his adviser, Luis Garcia Abad, refused to confirm the reports by Spanish newspapers Marca and AS that Alonso had got the all-clear after the tests. “It is private so I cannot confirm or deny it, but I have

no doubts he will go to Malaysia as planned,” he said. If he is to travel to Asia, the double world champion must also still pass FIA tests at the Sepang circuit on Thursday before being able to race. His manager has said those tests, which should gauge his cognitive and reaction skills, should be a formality, although Alonso will also need the green light from the Malaysian circuit doctor. McLaren, who have not won a race since 2012, were woefully off the pace in Australia with Jenson Button finishing last in 11th place after he and Danish team-mate Kevin Magnussen qualified on the back row. Alonso is returning to McLaren, the team he drove for in 2007, after five years at Ferrari and at the start of a new Honda-powered era for the former champions. The 33-year-old suffered temporary memory loss in his crash, with some reports suggesting he had forgotten in the immediate aftermath that he was a F1 driver and could not initially remember anything after 1995. However McLaren racing director Éric Boullier played that down at the time, saying the Spaniard – who spent three nights in hospital – had suffered “a normal concussion”. theguardian.com
