Foreign Ministry working to locate 116 Spaniards in wake of Nepal quake Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo is in New Delhi organizing evacuation effort
A total of 342 people from Spain who were in the country have been located so far
The Foreign Ministry has located 342 Spaniards and is still looking for 116 others who were in Nepal at the time a powerful earthquake struck the small Asian nation on Saturday, killing at least 3,600 people according to the latest reports.
The Airbus 310 that recently took Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo to India on an official three-day visit is expected to make two trips to the Nepalese capital on Monday to fly Spaniards to New Delhi. The aircraft will carry around 70 passengers on each flight. There are officially 121 Spaniards living in the Nepalese capital, of whom 40 spent the night inside the offices of a Spanish construction company. Diplomatic sources said that Margallo will delay his return to Madrid, which was scheduled for Tuesday morning, in order to organize the evacuation from Kathmandu, located around 800 kilometers from New Delhi. The Spanish embassy in New Delhi (Spain has no diplomatic representation in Nepal) is regularly updating its list of citizens who have been found. Efforts are
being hindered by the fact that many tourists do not sign up to the embassy’s traveler registry. So far, no deaths or injuries among the Spanish colony in Nepal have been reported.
Foreign minister Jose Manuel GarciaMargallo will delay his return from India to help evacuate Spaniards from Nepal. A team made up of Spain’s consul general in New Delhi, Laura García Alfaya, the interior affairs attaché, Ramón Gómez Nieto, and a police officer specializing in rescue operations traveled to Kathmandu on Sunday to help find Spaniards in the area and organize the evacuation of those wishing to leave the country. There are officially 121 Spaniards living in the Nepalese capital, of whom 40 spent the night inside the offices of a Spanish construction company named San José, which is working on the airport’s new terminal. Meanwhile, the Spanish International Cooperation and Development Agency (AECID) has readied a Hercules transport aircraft with 30 tons of emergency material that will join the international relief effort as soon as all permits are secured. So far, only small lumps of fuel oil have The secretary of state for the Public Works Ministry, Julio Gómez Pomar, admitted on Sunday that fuel oil is still leaking from the fishing boat, adding that it is very hard to work out the amount that is already in the sea. Gómez explained that, since the beginning of the crisis, just 400 kilos of hydrocarbons have been recovered. The main job for the coastguard ships that are in the area so far is to disperse the slicks that are threatening to wash up on the coast of the islands.
The alarm was raised on Saturday, when the Canarian government announced that an oil slick was located just a few miles of the south of Tenerife, only to later rectify that news. Since then, the secretary of state has explained that, until now, no fuel oil has been spotted in that area. News of that “false alarm” was also confirmed by the Canarian economy, tax and security

Does Your Bank In Spain Have A Copy Of Your ID? from your bank.
Your account could be frozen if your bank in Spain doesn’t have a copy of your passport before the end of April. To comply with five-year old regulations on money-laundering Spanish banks are scrambling to get copies of ID documents for all their clients before the end of this month. As El Pais In English in explains: “April 30 marks the deadline for banks to collect and digitalize upto-date identification documents for all account holders, as per existing legislation. For Spaniards, this means the DNI national identity card; for foreign residents, their residency card or passport.” Banks are obliged to contact customers where ID documents are lacking, so you should be able to assume all is well if you haven’t heard
But what if your bank doesn’t have your correct contact details, as is known to happen? If your bank can’t reach you, and doesn’t have a copy of your ID on record, your account will be frozen on the 1st of May. That could be a pain for property owners relying on standing orders to make regular payments like community fees and mortgage repayments. Accounts will be reactivated once ID is provided, but if three months pass by without ID, accounts become known as cuentas de orden, which are harder to reactivate, and recover money from them. “Some sources talk about more than five million clients without an up-todate ID document, although banking associations refute this figure,” says El Pais. Banks like Santander allow clients to scan and email a copy of their ID document, so it is not necessary to visit Spain. If you have a bank account in Spain it might be a good idea to check your bank has a copy of your ID on record http://www.spanishpropertyinsight. com/.

Amy Winehouse family condemn documentary A m y Winehouse's family has criticised a documentary about the late singer's life saying it is "misleading and contains some basic untruths". Director A s i f Kapadia's film Amy is due to pre mie re at next month's Cannes Film Festival. Winehouse's family released a statement on Sunday saying that the film suggested family members did too little to help the singer, who died in July 2011 of accidental alcohol poisoning. She was 27. The soul diva, whose 2006 album Back to Black won five Grammy Awards, had battled drug and alcohol abuse for years. The family statement said the movie did not reflect the "huge effort from all concerned to help Amy at all stages". "Fundamentally, the Winehouse family believes that the film does a disservice to individuals and families suffering from the complicated affliction of addiction," it said. The filmmakers said in a statement that they began work with "total objectivity" and the support of the Winehouse family.

And you’ve got a nice bluesy voice. ‘I think we’ve found somebody really truly special.’ In fact, Cowell seemed SO impressed with the lad that we wouldn’t be surprised if he gets handed a recording contract before the series is over. Sawyer Sweeten, 'Everybody Loves Raymond' child actor, dies aged 19
Former "Everybody Loves Raymond" child actor Sawyer Sweeten died Thursday at the age of 19 at a family member's home in Texas. Sweeten's older sister Madilyn confirmed her brother's death in a statement released Thursday. "This morning a terrible family tragedy has occurred. We are devastated to report that our beloved brother, son, and friend, Sawyer Sweeten, took his own life," the statement said. "He was weeks away from his 20th birthday. At this sensitive time, our family requests privacy and we beg of you to reach out to the ones you love." "I'm shocked and terribly saddened by the news about Sawyer," Romano in a statement released to People magazine. "He was a wonderful and sweet kid to be around. Just a great energy whenever he was there. My heart breaks for him, his family and his friends during this very difficult time." Sweeten's other co-stars shared their own thoughts and condolences on social media. Doris Roberts, who played Sweeten's grandmother, posted on her Facebook page that Sweeten "was a very sweet young man who will be dearly missed." Patricia Heaton, Sweeten's onscreen mother, left her own message of condolence on Twitter. “Sawyer Sweeten was a funny and exceptionally bright young man. He is gone from us far too soon.” A native of Brownwood, Texas, Sweeten made his first appearance on "Everybody Loves Raymond before he turned two years old. According to the Internet Movie Database, he also made one appearance on the Disney Channel show "Even Stevens". Credit: Fox News

How to Replace Cracked Swimming Pool Tiles An in-ground swimming pool forms the center point of a backyard, and it’s a sound investment in your property. To keep your pool looking its best, you need to replace cracked pool tiles as soon as they appear. Because northern California is prone to minor earthquakes and tremors that may necessitate swimming pool repair, this may be an ongoing project. Fortunately, it’s a simple matter to replace pool tiles. The hard part may be finding colored tiles to match the originals. 1: Lower the water level of the pool below the damaged tiles. Allow the tiles to dry. 2: Remove the grout around cracked pool tiles, using a grout saw. This device looks like a screwdriver with a saw blade on the end. Set the saw tip into the joint and press down as you move the saw blade back and forth to cut away grout. 3: Insert the flat edge of a chisel in the joint of a cracked tile. Tap the chisel with a hammer to
break the tile’s bond with its mortar. Continue tapping with the hammer and chisel until you remove the entire damaged tile. Repeat this process for any remaining cracked pool tiles. 4: Mix swimming pool thinset repair mortar according to package directions. Some thinset has a bonding agent that helps the adhesive quality of the thinset. Mix equal parts dry thinset and bonding agent. Add enough water to make a mixture that looks like mashed potatoes. Stir the thinset well to remove any lumps. 5: Dampen the area where you are replacing broken tiles slightly with water. Apply a golf ball-size dab of thinset mortar to the back of a replacement tile. Press the tile into position. Wiggle it back and forth slightly to cause the mortar to spread across the back of the tile. Take care to install the replacement tile so it is even with adjacent tiles. Hold tiles in place with duct tape until they dry. Repeat this process

How to Decide Between Cutting Your Hair or Not
So, you've decided that you may want to get a haircut. But are you also worried about the outcome? Unsure if what you have in mind will actually suit you? Make sure before you take the step and cut your hair that you make an informed decision. Determine your face shape. Before you decide on a haircut, get to know your face shape. The shape of your face plays a big role in deciding whether or not you should cut your hair. Some hairstyles and hair lengths look better on certain face shapes. Choosing a haircut based on your face shape can help you avoid drawing attention to the wrong aspects of your face. A haircut that complements your face shape minimizes your negative attributes while emphasizing your beauty Choose just about any style with an oval shape. Oval faces are longer than they are wide, and the forehead and the jaw are the same width. Oval shaped faces can wear just about any hairstyle. If you have an oval face, try a collarbone length bob with side swept bangs. If you want to shorten your oval face, bangs help with that. Go with a sweeping side bang or a blunt bang if you decide to do this. Go for longer hair with beach waves and a center part. Go with a pixie or longer layers for a round face. A round face is circular with the widest point at the cheeks and ears, though the length and width are almost the same. Short hairstyles in a swept-back direction help achieve fullness and can lengthen your face. A pixie cut can downplay the roundness of a round face. For longer styles, try hair that hits your collarbone or shoulders. This helps slim the face. Or try longer hair below the shoulder with long layers. The long layers help keep volume away from your face and help weigh down curls so they’re not bunching at your face. Women with round faces should avoid chin-length hair as it only amplifies the roundness. If you have your heart set on a bob, try wearing the bob in a messy style or have the layers in the front longer and then let it get shorter as you go towards the nape. Round faces look best without bangs, but if you really want bangs, avoid blunt, straight cut ones. Go for side swept bangs instead Go with short or medium hair with a square face. Square faces have strong jawlines and equally strong hairlines. Short or medium-length hair go well with square faces, especially with waves or roundness around the face. Long straight tresses can also draw attention away from a square face. Wispy side-bangs will soften the shape. Shag styles and light feathery layers around the shoulders help soften the squareness. A center part helps open up a square face. You want to avoid heavy, straight bangs with a square face. Wear styles that add width to the jawline with a heart shaped face. A heart shaped face is wide at the temples and narrows to a very delicate chin. Chin-length or longer styles add width to the jaw-line. Uniform layers and curls below the ears help balance out the thin chin. Styles that emphasize the upper-face should be avoided. Sweeping or heavy bangs also look great with heart shaped faces. Try deep side parts to emphasize your eyes. If you want a pixie cut, go for choppy layers to balance the narrow chin while downplaying the wide forehead. Consider your body type. Your face shape isn’t the only factor that can influence your hair. Your body type also can determine how you cut your hair and what length looks good on you.

Tel: 950 121 936 sales@soltimes.com For slim, straight bodies, go for medium to long hair with bangs and layers. Avoid hair that’s too straight or pixie cuts. Volume helps downplay the slimness. For curvy, full figured bodies, avoid short hair as this can make you look heavier. Also avoid overly long hair since that also can make you look heavy. Go for medium hair with less volume. For petite bodies, go for proportions. Don’t wear your hair too short or too long. For tall, athletic bodies, anything works on your frame. Experiment with hairstyles to find the right one for you. Think about your hair type. Is your hair naturally curly or straight? Is it thick or thin? The texture of your hair influences the way you wear and style it. If you have curly hair, make sure you want a curly short style, otherwise you may end up spending too much time trying to straighten it. Curly hair also shrinks as it dries, so you may need to cut it longer for a short style. Some curly hair that curls at the root doesn’t hold short styles as well as straight hair. If you have thick hair, make sure your stylist thins

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer words in as clear a way Bytes. The statement “Microsoft loves as possible. To then Linux” is generally not something you find that I have failed might expects to hear, but that was one of was, to say the least, the messages from Microsoft CEO Satya upsetting! Nadella. That’s a heck of a long way from This got me thinking Steve Ballmer proclaiming back in 2001 about computer users that “Linux is a cancer.” In the years since after buying then, Microsoft certainly attacked Linux who, like it was a cancer with all the enthusiasm an new computer or that their legal department could muster tablet, feel that they have just caught a (and failing abysmally). Microsoft has monster by the tail and don’t know what never been able to buy, manipulate or to do with it! My memory isn’t perfect, but coerce the massive Linux community, and remembering back 36 or more years to my this over the years, has irked our beloved first days of having a P.C., and wondering Uncle Bill as a result. What it does actually what on earth I’d let myself in for, isn’t say is that Microsoft have finally accepted easy. I’m reliably informed that as I get that their dream of world domination (in older, the distant memories will become the computer Operating System market) is nothing more than that, a dream! more vibrant and easier to access and will What has caused Microsoft to make definitely be an advantage :-) I have had a suggestion, put to me, that such a change? Well let’s use that classic detective’s approach: “Follow the money”. may turn out to be very helpful to anyone Microsoft’s CEO said that he’s not having problems understanding their new interested in fighting old battles — ‘Toy’. I’ve been asked by the management especially when, like it or not, Linux has of Jacks Bar In Albox to run an “absolute become a vital part of today’s business beginners” course. The purpose of the technology. “If you don’t jump on the course will be to de-mystify the “magic new,” he said, “you don’t survive.”. There’s box” and return it to it’s rightful place as nothing new about Linux, which now over 21 years old, is old enough to drink and a tool, a ‘means to an end’, because after drive (not at the same time) and have a all, that is all it is! The topics will be as varied as your mortgage! Two things that are now new: First, Microsoft’s fortunes now lie not concerns, ranging from how to set up a with the desktop or desktop programs, brand new laptop or tablet, through all but with its “Azure cloud and cloud-based aspects of emails and emailing, to writing programs such as Office 365”. Second, a document or spreadsheet and anything Linux, even on the Azure cloud, is used by else that you are concerned about. Classes businesses large and small. So Microsoft will be limited in size and length (no more must now accept and work with it, or die than 4 people and no longer than an hour) an ignominious death! A Kodak Moment
Remember the good old days when out dining in a restaurant; someone would whip out their 35mm camera and photograph their dinner; then once the film was finished it would be sent off for processing. A few weeks later with the photos back they would then visit their friends’ houses to show them the photos of the dinner they had eaten a while back? I suspect nobody ever did the above, and other diners would have looked on agog if someone had. What we of a certain age do recall though is that sense of excitement and trepidation from using a film camera. Unless using a Kodak Polaroid camera there was no way of knowing how any picture would turn out. The finished roll was posted off in a special envelope or taken down to Boots the Chemists. Only when the fat envelope thudded onto the doormat or was picked up from the processing lab would the results be known. A commercial photographer could get a sneak preview at the lab but for us mere mortals we’d no idea what results would slide out of the envelope. Nowadays it’s all so different and the word ‘Selfie’ has made it

7 things to keep in mind about Spanish wills 1. Do not underestimate the importance of signing one. 2. If you already have one, make sure it complies with new European Directive 650/2012 which comes into force 17th of August. If you are no certain , speak to your solicitor. 3. Make sure it protects the people you care about correctly (second wife versus children from first marriage etc.). For example: if you leave everything to your new wife , she could leave your children out of your estate after you have deceased. It is possible to avoid this risk. 4. Makes sure the will makes maximum use of the exemptions available in each region of Spain. 5. Take into account
that since the sentence of the European court of justice of September of last year the same exemption rates can be claimed by non residents so your existing will may not have taken this into account. 6. Make sensible use of Life Possessions as an instrument to both mitigate inheritance tax and protect spouse versus children from other marriages, while awarding the security of not being left out of their inheritance after your death. 7. Be aware that in some regions of Spain exemption rates have been reduced or abolished during the credit crunch (for example in Murcia Group II heirs ), making it important to reassess your inheritance tax planning.

into the dictionary. Oh, and some people insist on photographing their dinner. Usually there were 24 or 36 frames on a roll of 35mm film; sometimes the number reel on the camera kept going and an extra shot or two could be taken before having to hand wind the film back into its cartridge. Simple pleasures eh! In the early 70s Kodak launched its Instamatic brand using a 120 cartridge which didn’t need rewinding. Coincidentally the 120 cameras were relatively slim line, not unlike the size and shape of many mobile phones today. 120 was a hugely successful format and Kodak only stopped making the cameras in the mid-80s; then the film cartridges a couple of years ago. Smaller niche manufactures have now taken over the reins for the many camera buffs out there. Until around 2000 film cameras were the norm rather than the exception. Then as technology leapt forward the digital era stormed the world of photography. In 2003 Kodak launched the EasyShare camera; it was the first camera to have an AMOLED
display screen, the forerunner to the screens used on many phones and tablets nowadays. Kodak had conducted extensive market research discovering that women especially didn’t like the inconvenience of getting photos printed. So the camera was designed to plug straight into a Kodak printer. But, year later they stopped producing film cameras and laid off 15,000 employees. A sad end as the World’s first commercial digital camera was made by Kodak and sold under the Apple label in 1994. Even earlier in1986, the Kodak boffins created the first megapixel sensor; it was capable of taking a 7x5inch photo with its 1.4 megapixels. Even though their R&D was excellent Kodak’s bosses didn’t believe that digital would ever replace film; though their competitors did. Minolta, Sony, Nikon and Fuji were so much better at exploiting the new technology and making more stylish and importantly cheaper products! Kodak went from being a major player in the digital camera market and having 27% of the market in
1999 to filing for bankruptcy in 2012. What also didn’t help Kodak was that as this century grew up, mobiles and then tablets started to get better cameras attached. People kept the devices that did the most. I wonder what would have happened if a Kodak boffin had added a phone attachment to a camera 25 years ago. Kodak also ceased production of their Kodachrome film in 2010 which was something Kodak execs never thought would happen. Kodachrome was introduced in 1935 and was the first commercially available colour film, responsible for many of the iconic images of the 20th Century. Steve McCurry took this shot in1985 for National Geographic using Kodachrome film, it’s known simply as ‘Afghan Girl!

ARTADIA NAMES 10 FINALISTS FOR INAUGURAL NEW YORK GRANTS
Artadia, a nonprofit that has provided unrestricted grants to artists working in cities across the United States for the past 15 years, today announced the 10 finalists that have been selected for its first-ever New York round. (It has previously presented awards in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and elsewhere.) Those artists are: Yevgeniya Baras Joe Fyfe Donna Huanca Bill Jenkins Jennie Lee
Eric Mack Sara Magenheimer Park McArthur Kameelah Rasheed Georgia Sagri
The 10 were selected from a little more than 1,000 applicants by a jury that consisted of Matthew Higgs, the director of New York’s White Columns alternative space, Amanda Hunt, a curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem, and Michele Abeles, the artist who currently has a very fetching large-scale photographic work on view in the Meatpacking District, right across from the Whitney Museum, as part of a project initiated by the museum, the High Line, and TF Cornerstone. The winner will be announced in late May, after a showing of work by the finalists at the NADA New York fair. Making the final decision will be Higgs, John Rasmussen, the director of Minneapolis alternative space Midway Contemporary, and Ingrid Schaffner, the senior curator of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, who was tapped last month to organize the next Carnegie International. http://www.artnews.com/
Betty Willis, designer of the fabulous Las Vegas sign, dies aged 91 The woman behind the iconic neon sign that has welcomed countless visitors to Las Vegas since 1959 has died
Betty Willis, the woman who designed Las Vegas's iconic neon sign, has died. Her daughter confirmed that Willis died at home in Nevada on Sunday, after a mortuary posted details on its website. Willis was 91 Willis designed the neon sign as part of a tourism boost on the part of Clark County, Nevada. The “fabulous” sign was erected in 1959, and became an instant hit with tourists and locals. “There was no other word to use,” she said in 2008. “Las Vegas was fabulous, and we wanted to advertise that.” • 60 inspiring photographs Willis took inspiration for the shape of her sign from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company logo, while the starburst at the top was inspired by Disney films, intending to promote happiness. The silver dollars spelling out “welcome” were designed to look lucky. The sign has since become one of the most recognisable
signs in the world, and has been reproduced freely on souvenir merchandise. However, Willis did not copyright the sign, or make any money out of it, saying it was her “gift” to Las Vegas. www. telegraph.co.uk
Francis Bacon self-portraits
rediscovered & expected to fetch £30m Two works bought by private collector soon after they were completed around 40 years ago set to under the hammer at Sotheby's after being rediscovered
Two Francis Bacon self-portraits are going on public display for the first time after they were rediscovered in a private collection. Experts knew of the existence of the works, but had no idea who had bought the paintings soon after they were completed around 40 years ago. Now descendants of the original collector have decided to sell the portraits, which are estimated to fetch £15 million each at auction. They will go on show at Sotheby's in London and New York before going under the hammer in July. Self-Portrait 1975 was painted at the height of Bacon's career, in the period which followed the suicide of his former lover George Dyer in 1971. The triptych Three Studies for Self-Portrait (1980) shows the artist, who was then in his 70s and becoming increasingly haunted by the inevitability of death, with his eyes downcast. Oliver Barker, Sotheby’s senior international specialist in contemporary art, described the find as “a pretty extraordinary collecting moment”. “(Art dealer) Marlborough Fine Art kept a photographic archive and so both of these paintings appeared in a book on Bacon’s selfportraits, but apart from being reproduced in books they’ve not been seen,” he said. “We knew of the existence of the
paintings but simply had no idea where they could be. “The first time I saw these paintings it was such a wonderful awakening. They’re both so luminous.” He said that the works contained a combination of “intoxicating ingredients”. • Melvyn Bragg: My friend Francis Bacon, possessed by devils • ‘Francis Bacon? He was a nice, gossipy sort of man’ • Who’d want to bring home a Francis Bacon? Bacon painted the 1975 selfportrait when he was in his 60s, but looked much younger in the work - obsessed with his physical appearance, he dyed his hair and wore make-up as he grew older. Mr Barker said that the artist deliberately gave “himself film star-style looks, appearing as photogenic as possible while still being highly self critical. “He paints himself with a much more youthful appearance,” he said. He said that the triptych had a “filmic quality”, with “the action unwinding in front of you across three different spaces”, and showed the artist’s “level of psychological angst and questioning”. “Bacon throughout his life was really questioning human existence. Never is that more pivotal in his work than in his selfportraits”, he said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

Spain House Prices Have Dropped 31.3% Since Start of Crisis
An article published in the latest issue of the British magazine, The Economist, has estimated that housing prices in Spain have fallen by 31.3% since the beginning of the crisis, in the first quarter of 2008, and warns that they are still falling. This decline is the third largest recorded worldwide, among the 26 countries analysed. The report states that although the Spanish economy is once again growing, house prices in Spain are still falling, similar to other European countries like France or Italy, and gives a decline in house prices of 0.2% in the last year. The report also indicates that homes in Spain are still overvalued by between 8% and 18%, and that the housing in Canada, Australia, Belgium and France are much more overvalued with regard to average earnings. According to The Economist´s analysis of the 26 countries around world, Spain is the nation to register the third most significant decline in housing prices since the start of the crisis, behind only Ireland (-37.2%) and Greece (-38.5%).
In addition, the magazine points out that the population of Spain has fallen by 200,000 people in the past year, since many unemployed persons have emigrated in search of work, while in the three years prior to the crisis the population was growing by up to 800,000 people per year. El Mundo reported that of all the countries analysed, those continuing to register decreases year-on-year in housing prices are Spain (-0.2%), France (-2.1%), Italy (-3.8%), Singapore (-3.9%), China (-5.6%) and Greece (-6.1%), while in contrast the countries registering the greatest increases in prices are Ireland (+16.2%), Turkey (+16%), Hong Kong (+11.9%) and Sweden (+8.6%). In terms of the declines registered since the first quarter of 2008, house prices have fallen by -37.2% in Ireland, Greece (-38.5%), Spain (-31.3%), Netherlands (-17.7%), Italy (-16.9%), France (-3.5%), United States (-1.6%) and Japan (-1%). http://news.kyero.com/

Spanish property hotspots
There are a number of property hotspots in Spain to consider right now - in fact, some of them never really cooled off, such as recessionproof Mallorca, still attracting the mega-rich and royalty, and ever fashionable Ibiza, drawing the children of the buyers who discovered it in the Sixties. You can get a two-bed apartment in Mallorca from around €150,000, although you’ll pay a bit more in the charming city of Palma, that is currently reinventing itself as a more user-friendly version of Barcelona. But the Balearics are a low-volume market compared with the mainland Costas, and the current favourites are the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. The southern Costa Blanca has so many advantages for property hunters, including a plethora of golf courses near popular towns like Villamartin and Playa Flamenca, and just about the healthiest climate in Europe. Prices vary between the desirable areas and the overbuilt areas but are generally low – two bedroom apartments near the sea from €50,000. In Cabo Roig, to take another popular resort, you might pay €85,000 for a spacious two-bed apartment with a sun terrace. Inland a little, in the village of Algorfa popular with expats, a comparable property will be nearer €70,000. The northern Costa Blanca, less affected by development and with more building restrictions in place, draws buyers to towns including Moraira, Javea, Denia, Calpe and Benissa Costa. In upmarket Moraira, expect to pay €400,000 for a quality three-bed villa with a pool in a
good location but in Benitachell you might get a four or five bedroom villa for €250,000. Inland of these resorts, the Orba and Jalon valleys are increasing in popularity for buyers seeking a more tranquil location than the coastal resorts; and also more bang for their buck. In the Orba Valley you can get a threebed villa with a pool for around €150,000-200,000, or a large restored finca for €450,000. Going south to the Costa del Sol, glitzy Marbella might said to be well and truly booming, with new developments back in vogue and great demand for holiday rentals. You can get an apartment on a complex for €100,000 but a spacious apartment in a good gated community in a sought-after location would be nearer €300,000. Popular areas include Estepona, San Pedro (where our own presenter Laura Hamilton bought in 2012), Nueva Andalusia, Mijas Costa and Benahavis. The Anglo-friendly resort of Benalmadena is popular with tourists and expats and you can get a two-bed apartment there for less than €100,000. The nearby Costa Almeria, a stretch of unspoilt coastline between Murcia and Granada, is not as developed as the Costa del Sol, perhaps not as well-known by the British, yet its fans like the fact its villages retain much of their Spanish identity – it’s the “real Spain” still. Mojacar remains a popular spot, less than one hour’s drive from the airport, and a central location for getting around Almeria as well as a traditional holiday destination - ideal for families and cou-
ples in its own right. You have plenty of choice of one or two-bed apartments with a budget of €100,000; villas range from €200k. A note of caution: there have been a few issues with illegally built homes in the Almanzora Valley (including Albox) – don’t forget your due diligence. In next-door Murcia, Albacete seems to offer a good choice for those seeking an inland base close to an historic city. Fans of Almeria rave about the warm climate there but of course the Canary Islands have the perennial advantage of being the closest winter warmth destination to the UK – and are great for winter sun rentals. British buyers tend to go for either Lanzarote or Tenerife. A threebed villa in Lanzarote will go from just under €200,000, but you can pick up a studio apartment on Tenerife’s Playa de las Americas from €60,000. Of less interest to the masses are the Costa de la Luz for its great Spanish flavour (its frontier towns must not be missed), or the wonderful windsurfing of Tarifa. Or the Costa Brava, a string of beautiful little coastal towns where prices remain comparatively high, with the vibrant city of Barcelona within easy reach. aplaceinthesun.com

AXA RE acquires 381 Santander banking assets in Spain
AXA Real Estate Investment Managers has completed, on behalf of a joint venture between two of its institutional clients, the acquisition of 381 banking assets across Spain for €308 million. The portfolio has been acquired from a third party investor, URO Property Holdings. The 381 assets located throughout Spain total 90,000 sqm and are fully let on 24-26 year leases to Santander, the largest banking company within the country. Predominantly situated in the five major cities of Andalucia, Cataluna, Castilla y Leon, Pais Vasco and Madrid, the remaining assets are in prime locations within the smaller municipal cities. Having been a first mover back into Spain in mid-2013 through the acquisition of a Barcelona office portfolio from Generalitat de Catalunya for €172 million, AXA Real Estate has continued to source and acquire within the Spanish real estate market, notably through the acquisition of the Gran Via retail asset in Madrid last year by a 50/50 joint venture between two clients. AXA Real Estate is also able to execute complex investment
opportunities on behalf of clients by leveraging its strong network of local teams. Hermann Montenegro, Head of Asset Management & Transactions, Spain, at AXA Real Estate, commented: “This latest acquisition underpins AXA Real Estate’s conviction in the Spanish real estate market, having purchased what we believe to be a portfolio offering significant value let on a long lease to Santander. As further testament to AXA Real Estate’s ability to utilise its local teams, the portfolio spans the entire country, providing our clients with exposure in both the major cities, as well as the regions. property-magazine.eu

Homeowners cut essential spending
Lower gas and electricity prices have helped homeowners lower essential spending, a report has found. Lloyds Bank looked at personal finances of people in the UK and said gas and electricity spending was down 7.2% and fuel spending had dropped 9.4%. This essential spending is predominately made up of rent or mortgage payments, plus other debt payments, utility bills, council tax, TV licences, food and fuel. In March, Brits said they felt personal finances were improving. On the bank’s index it said confidence had risen by 10 points to reach a score of 158. Household finances improved by five percentage points, although people felt they were able to spend less on food and other entertainment at Easter. Looking to the future, and with interest rates looking likely to remain flat in the short-term, the level of household debt is predicted to fall. The survey found 34% of people plan to pay off debt while 70% want to save more cash, perhaps to spend on home improvements or property costs. Patrick Foley, chief economist at Lloyds Bank, said people felt more confident about the wider economy, despite the upcoming election. “As a stronger economic backdrop continues to develop, consumers are becoming more confident in both their own financial situation, and the country’s,” he said. “And while political uncertainty looks likely to rise following the general election, household sentiment should be supported by the modest pickup in wage growth that seems to be unfolding. This suggests the UK’s economic prospects remain bright.” Claire Garrod, head of personal current accounts at Lloyds Bank, said: “Spending power is continuing to grow and is being driven by more confidence about people’s current individual and household financial situations.” yourmortgage.co.uk

Matas of the Sierra
We will leave the ‘tranquil’ whitewashed streets of Alqueria for a moment and venture into the Sierra Alhamilla. The dramatic landscape peculiar to this part of Spain offers a unique opportunity for those who seek solitude. Solitude to meditate, solitude to avoid detection or perhaps simply seeking solitude out of an acute sense of stupidity. For Galeno Matas solitude was a combination of all these things. He had time enough to dwell on the injustice of living rough in the hills while his political opponents lived off ‘the fat of the land’ in Alqueria. Matas, still believing the Civil War to be raging hid from his imaginary enemy. He saw Franco’s troops behind every rock. Matas spent his days dodging his insubstantial adversaries, foraging for food and maintaining his ageing arsenal of weapons. What he would do if he came face to face with these erstwhile belligerents he wasn’t quite sure, something heroic no doubt. Matas still does his bit for Spain’s defunct Second Republic. Every fourteenth of April, the day the Republic was proclaimed in 1931, Matas fires a shot at the gable-end of Alqueria’s church. The church because of all the evil it represented to Republicans, also because it was the only ruddy thing big enough for him to hit and still remain undercover. The ancient projectile would cause a little ‘pock’ mark to appear and a puff of whitewash to momentarily materialise as it harmlessly struck the wall. Womenfolk of the Village would gather on every fifteenth of April below the
viewpoint
gable-end and stare in wonder at the new pock mark. It was surely a divine sign and offerings in the form of bread, cheese, jamón and wine were duly prepared. Just why these worthy ladies thought that an absolute being would make his presence known in such a fashion is a mystery. They marched in a solemn line-ahead to the Village’s shrine north of Alqueria. With prayers and many gesticulations they placed their offerings at the foot of the rough stone cross. On every sixteenth of April Matas would scramble down from the cave he called home. Making his way from tree to tree, from rock to rock, carefully, head low he would sprint to the stone cross. There he would find the ‘banquet’ left by the villagers. Surely he thought this was a sign that the Village was still loyal to the Republic. Matas appreciated their supply of rations, especially the Remitroot Wine of which he was very fond. He only wished it would happen more than once a year.

By the Light of the Silvery Moon The full moon shone down serenely on the somnolent village. I was sleeping the sleep of a clear conscience and a blameless life, when in an instant I was awake – a fully functioning, all senses alert kind of awake. I can sleep through all kinds of cacophony; thunder, lightning, hellfire, brimstone, football, but a tiny noise that should not be happening will rouse me immediately from the very depth of slumber, and I was the kind of awake that signified that Something Was Not Right. I listened to the all-encompassing silence, and then I heard it – peenkpeenk, the sound of a mobile phone in need of feeding. I looked at the clock – 2.45. I can’t listen to that all night, I shall have to get up and do something about it, I thought with an added expletive. The moon was so bright that I entered the living room torchless. I located the phone, checked its pulse and rummaged round for its charger. Better check Pete’s phone, I thought, and lo and behold! That too was empty. Now I had 2 dead phones with 2 chargers, but only one socket in the living room. No problem, I plugged one in in the living room and took the other one into the kitchen to plug in. As I entered the kitchen I was besieged by an army of cats. Actually it was 2 cats, but the speed and persistence with which they entwined themselves around my legs in the half-dark, and their vociferous mewing gave a lie to their actual numbers. Good, they were saying, breakfast is really early

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk today! Somehow I made it without tripping or treading on a cat to the socket, plugged the phone in and endeavoured to leave the kitchen. By now the dog had decided that the cats were right, and breakfast was really early, and the best place for her to be was in the kitchen. She leapt and wriggled and squirmed around me with delight, while the cats darted sinuously around my legs. I stood in the gloaming, marooned in a broiling sea of animals, unable to safely proceed forward or backward. There was nothing for it, moonlight may be very romantic, but I needed electricity! I pushed the switch, and the menagerie was revealed. ‘Go back to bed, all of you!’ I commanded as I pushed through their seething masses. They returned quickly to their beds and their slumbers. But me, I was Awake, with a capital A!

Ingredients:
1/2 pound sea scallops 1/2 pound shrimp, peeled 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice 1 tablespoon grated orange zest 1/2 cup halved, thinly sliced red onion 1 finely chopped red bell pepper 1 finely chopped yellow bell pepper 1 cup diced seeded tomato 1 small serrano chile pepper, 1/2 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro kosher salt to taste 1/8 teaspoon ground cumin 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 avocado, diced 1 tablespoon olive oil
Method:
Remove the tough side muscles from scallops, if necessary; slice scallops in half horizontally. Fill a 1-quart saucepan 3/4 full with salted water and bring it to a boil. Add scallops and reduce heat to a bare simmer. Poach scallops until just cooked through, about 1 minute. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the scallops to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Return the water to a boil and poach shrimp in the same manner, transferring them to a bowl of ice water after they become opaque inside and turn pink, 2 to 3 minutes. Drain the scallops and shrimp well and pat dry; place them in a glass or ceramic bowl and pour in lime juice and orange juice. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Pour off most of the juice from the seafood (just leave it moist) and mix in orange zest, red onion, red and yellow bell peppers, tomato, chile pepper, cilantro, salt, cumin, and cayenne pepper. Refrigerate an additional 30 minutes. Just before serving, gently mix in avocado and drizzle the ceviche with olive oil. Serve in martini glasses or stemmed margarita glasses.

It's no yolk - a schoolgirl reckons her pet chicken has laid the world’s smallest egg. Shannon Hayes, 12, spotted the minuscule egg, smaller than a 5p coin, next to the ordinary sized-produce in her hen coop. And the shell-shocked
youngster did research online to reveal the 1.8cm high egg is the tiniest - ever. Shannon said: “I’m confident it’s the smallest. It is very tiny - and you wouldn’t want it for breakfast.” She keeps seven hens which lay eggs at the family home at Capel Iwan, Carmarthenshire - but she’s not sure which laid the thimble-sized egg. Her gran Pamela Hayes, 58, said: “When Shannon found the egg she was TRAVELLING IN AIR CONDITIONED VEHICLE scared of dropping it when she brought DELIVERED TO DOOR it to the house. ”We PETS STAY IN PET FRIENDLY HOTELS. couldn’t believe our eyes because it is just ACCOMPANIED TRAVEL AVAILABLE so small compared to all the other eggs. “As far as we can see there is no official world record, but the

But that was beaten in 2014 by an egg one millimetre smaller in size, laid in Somerset by a hen called Muffin. However, Shannon’s perfectlyformed egg is at least two millimetres smaller than that - just 1.8 centimetres in length. She has ruled out making a tiny omelette with the egg - and has put it in the fridge for safe keeping. Pamela said: “Everyone says it’s a cracker.”

What a difference in Church Worship! Here we are at the Anglican Cathedral in Arusha, Northern Tanzania, where the several hundred attending the English language Communion Service (there were even more at the preceding Service in Swahili) are so enthusiastic. They clearly enjoy going to Church, and their only complaint seems to be that the 2½ hours allocated was insufficient! And it’s not just the uneducated who are so passionate about their faith. For the congregation includes a high proportion of professionals:- Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, University Professors, Research Scientists, Engineers and many others, from both Private and Public Sectors, indigenous and ex patriots, all equally confident of the reality of God, whose love and power is so evident all around. For it is, I’m assured many times, nigh on impossible for any thinking person to be atheist in this environment. How different in our community, where we live in a cosseted, almost sterile and false environment. We experience so little of the raw power of nature, see so little of the abundant variety of wildlife, constantly threatened by human activity, that’s always visible in Africa. We live as though it’s humanity alone that
controls our destiny, so remain blind to the evidence of God at work, oblivious to the many tokens of His love that surround us. So our worship, where it exists at all, tends to be similarly restrained, with little spontaneity. Church, for so many, is there as an emergency service, to be used when all else fails; rather than as a commitment to regular worship. We perhaps check details of services on the web, but never find time or reason to make the effort to attend, as more pressing needs take priority. Yet this is the God who, to restore our relationship with Him, gave his all for us; suffering and dying in our place, promising that, in due time we, like Jesus before us, will be physically raised to spend eternity with Him. Now doesn’t that prospect warrant a little more worship in the here and now? Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org .Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@ avired.com

Juve lose first derby in 20 years
Torino came from behind to beat runaway leaders Juventus to secure their first Turin derby victory for 20 years. Juve would have wrapped up a fourth consecutive title with a win, coupled with a Lazio defeat, and led when Andrea Pirlo curled home a freekick. Matteo Darmian levelled in style as he chipped the ball into the box with his first touch from a cross and lashed home with his second. And Fabio Quagliarella tapped home against his old club for a famous win. At least 10 Torino fans were injured in the first half when a paper banger exploded, causing splinters from seats
to hit supporters.
Second-placed Lazio drew 1-1 with Chievo, meaning a Juventus win would not have secured the title anyway. But for Juve, the game was about more than the title as their 17-match unbeaten run and seven-game winning streak in the derby came to an end. And they almost rescued a point late on, just moments after Josef Martinez had a goal disallowed for Torino.

The push for the play offs is well underway and the Reds of HuercalOvera look to be finishing strongly after a 3-0 home victory against CD Minera. Alex grabbed the second when great work from Lee Spires and Juanma on the left wing find the veteran midfielder open at the front post to head home past a flailing keeper. Almería take another step towards safety The Andalusians beat Eibar 2-0 with goals from Thievy and Verze and stay out of the relegation zone. UD Almería got a valuable 2-0 win against SD Eibar in one of the Liga BBVA matchday 33 fixtures. Thanks to goals by Thievy Bifouma and Verza, the Andalusians were able to overcome their opponents and remain outside the drop zone with 31 points; the Basques have the same number of points but sit sixteenth in the division. Almería got off to a perfect start by breaking the deadlock with just eight minutes on the clock. Theivy picked up the ball on the right wing, cut in towards the edge of the box and, after getting past his marker, beat the keeper with a powerful left-footed strike. Eibar reacted quickly through a
Mikel Arruabarrena but Rubén Martínez denied the visitors an equaliser with a great save. Xabi Irureta prevented Thievy from getting a second right before the break, a chance born out of some individual play from Jonathan Zongo. The second half began in similar fashion, with Zongo rattling the Eibar defence and setting up Thievy, who smashed the ball off the woodwork. The Basques kept looking for a way back into the game. A Borja Fernández volley flew past the wrong side of the upright, but Almería wrapped things up shortly afterwards from the penalty spot. Verza, a spot kick specialist, dually put the chance away to secure a victory for Sergi Barjuan’s men. Lfp.es

The leaders of the Liga BBVA won 0-2 against Espanyol, with first-half goals from Neymar and Messi. FC Barcelona put on a fine show in the Catalan derby against RCD Espanyol. TheCamp Nou side achieved an important 0-2 away victory and performed at their top level. The goals came in the first half courtesy of Neymar and Leo Messi. During the opening minutes of the game, there were frequent attacks into Kiko Casilla’s area. Barcelona’s first chance came in the 3’ minute through Leo Messi and in the 6’ minute the Espanyol keeper kept out a close range shot from Luis Suárez. Luis Enrique’s squad opened the scoring in the 17’ minute with a goal from Neymar following great link-up play. Soon after, in the 25’ minute, Andrés Iniesta passed to Luis Suárez who then provided a first touch assist
to Messi who made it 0-2 with his 36th goal of the season. Espanyol had their best chances in the opponent’s area following the break but did not create too much danger. In the 54’ minute Barcelona went down to 10 men after Jordi Alba was a given a straight red card. The weakness in numbers did not affect how the visitors played, Leo Messi had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and could have scored the third but he hit the woodwork. The Argentinian had another chance to score following a great move from Neymar but he did not reach the Brazilian’s cross. Xavi Hernández added to his legendary status by making his 500th Liga BBVA appearance. Lfp.es
