Kent earthquake ‘causes homes to shake’

The British Geological survey’s monitoring stations showed seismic activity on Friday morning. A 4.2 magnitude earthquake has been recorded in Kent, the British Geological Survey (BGS) has said. The tremor originated near Sandwich at a depth of 15km (9.5 miles) underground at 02:52 BST, it reported. Residents in areas including Margate, Canterbury and Southend-on-Sea in Essex felt the tremor, with some saying they thought it was a plane crash or a bomb. Kent Police said a number of calls had been received but no injuries or structural damage had been reported. But Herbert Smith tweeted that he and his wife Doreen were taking refuge in their caravan after being evacuated from their damaged home in Flete. The EuropeanMediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which monitors seismic activity across the continent, also recorded the earthquake. Theresa Foord, from Eastry near Sandwich, said: “I heard this massive crash and then the whole house started to shake. “Plates came off the wall, doors came open - it was all very frightening. “It seemed to go on for ages but it was about three to five seconds.” About 200 earthquakes take place in the UK every year but not all are as large as this tremor, according to BGS seismologist David Galloway. “We probably get one of this size once every three or four years so it is quite significant for people if their houses are shaking or they are woken from sleep,” he said. “But in world terms, it was about 260,000 times smaller than the earthquake in Nepal. “In the UK the biggest earthquake happened in 1931 off East Anglia at Dogger

Bank. That had the magnitude 6.1.” BBC South East reporter Simon Jones, who lives in Canterbury, said he was woken up when his house started shaking. Reporter Simon Jones says he woke up and the “whole house was shaking” “The initial thought was perhaps something had gone into the house, like a lorry but then I turned to social media and people right across east Kent were reporting an earthquake,” he said. Vikki Petts tweeted: “So we just had a 4.3 magnitude earthquake in Kent and my housemates slept through the entire thing. certainly woke me up!” Caroline Knott from Ramsgate: “I had never felt an earthquake before” Caroline Knott, from Ramsgate, said the earthquake woke her up, adding “I thought maybe a bomb’s gone off”. Jonathan Tapp said: “Earthquake in East Kent and now can’t get back to sleep. Despite months spent in [New Zealand] this is my first one that I’ve felt.” Iain Buchanan, from Ramsgate, said: “So I’m not going mental, my house shook due to an earthquake in Kent of all places.” Police said they began receiving reports of the tremor in east Kent at about 02:57 BST. Neither the force nor Kent Fire and Rescue Services had received any reports of structural damage or injuries, they said. Hundreds of homes were damaged when a 4.3 magnitude tremor hit Folkestone in 2007 Hundreds of homes in Folkestone were damaged by a 4.3 magnitude tremor which struck parts of Kent in 2007. More than 70 buildings were so dangerous residents could not return to them because of loose chimney stacks, tiles and masonry. Source: BBC

Ada Colau, Barcelona’s ‘Indignada’ protest homes mayor a day in 2014 from inhabitants who A career spent pounding the streets in anti-

austerity campaigns has brought Ada Colau close to leading one of Spain’s most powerful and most visited cities, Barcelona. The 41-year-old activist made her name campaigning on poor families’ doorsteps to protect them from eviction during Spain’s recent economic crisis. On Sunday she won the most votes in a municipal election, but faces a tricky job over coming days forging a coalition among a mixture of small rival parties who could unite to block her. If she pulls it off, she could become the first of the new generation of “Indignado” (“Outraged”) protesters elected to a major public office - and the first woman mayor of the city. Such a victory would take Colau inside the corridors of power that have so often been the target of her campaigns. She ran for mayor at the head of Barcelona En Comu (Barcelona In Common), an alliance of grassroots groups including members of the left-wing party Podemos. Opponents have branded her a mere populist or a dangerous radical and slammed her lack of experience. But on Sunday more than 176,000 people voted for her. “It is good for new people to get in, but they are very inexperienced and idealistic,” one voter in Barcelona on Sunday, Juli Montero, 54, said of Colau’s party. Another voter, Jordi Martinez, 36, said however that Colau’s “lack of experience could be a good thing, a breath of fresh air in politics”. Colau told AFP ahead of the elections that she wanted to make Barcelona “the spearhead of democratic change in Spain and southern Europe”. Having risen to prominence as leader of the Platform for Mortgage Victims, Colau vowed her first measures if elected would be to defend poor families. Authorities seized 95

defaulted on their mortgage payments, according to official data. On top of that were countless other families evicted for defaulting on rent or for occupying vacant properties. Colau proposes to turn empty homes into social housing, set a minimum monthly wage of €600 ($670) and make utility companies lower the price of gas, water and electricity. . Colau makes a point of travelling by public transport and has promised to reduce the use of official cars as mayor. She has vowed to limit mayors to two terms in office. Colau studied philosophy but dropped out of university to work so she could help her family. She worked in a series of low-paid jobs before joining a social research institute in 2007. She says she has never earned more than €1,500 a month. The fourth daughter of a graphic designer father and a sales representative mother, she was born on March 3rd, 1974 on the same day that the last prisoner of the Franco dictatorship, a Catalan activist, was executed. “My mother reminds me of that every birthday,” she said. “That marked me in my commitment to fighting for social change.” Her mother took Colau to her first protest demonstration at the age of five - the start of a lifelong habit. She was active in student unions, anti-globalisation protests, demonstrations against the Iraq war and especially the campaign for housing rights Her anti-eviction group claims to have prevented more than 1,000 evictions. It made Colau enemies in the governing Popular Party, one of whose members branded her a terrorist. But it also earned her and the platform the European Parliament’s European Citizens’ Prize in 2013.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO PAY INHERITANCE TAX AND HOW CAN I PAY IT IF OUR ACCOUNTS ARE FROZEN? In Spain you have six months from the date of death to pay the inheritance tax or present the forms claiming tax exemption. You can request an extension for a further six months, but you need to request it within the first five months since the date of death, with an indication of certain details in relation to the estate, like approx. value etc. You have to present the request of the extension at the Agencia Tributaria (national tax office) if the beneficiary is a non- resident and at the Tax office corresponding to the regional government when the beneficiary is a resident. (If Mojacar or Marbella to the Junta de Andalucia who have local offices.) If some beneficiaries are resident and others non resident

you need to present the request to both. Normally the tax office does not respond to the petition which means it has been granted. We always recommend copying the petition with the tax office stamp into the deed of acceptance. In any case regarding the freezing of the account it is fair to say that most Spanish banks will accept to allow direct debits to continue to be paid. We have never come across a local bank in Mojacar which has not accepted to do this. Also please take into account that the general rule of freezing the account has exceptions: 1. You can always use the frozen account to make payment of inheritance tax. 2. You can always use the frozen account to make payment of the funeral expenses.

PP losses at municipal, regional polls mark a swing to the left in Spain

The party will be forced to pact with Ciudadanos if it is to hold onto power in the regions. Emerging parties likely to secure historic victories in Barcelona and Madrid mayoral races The huge amount of local power that the conservative Popular Party (PP) won at the previous elections was seriously eroded at Sunday’s regional and municipal elections, in which 13 regions, the exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla and a total of 8,119 local councils were up for grabs. The PP, which has been in central government since 2011, lost its regional majorities thanks to Sunday’s vote (four full majorities, and a further three were it governed in a minority), but the party is keen to point out that it is still the mostvoted force in Spain, garnering 27% of the polls.

Podemos has managed to take away the PSOE’s ability to take advantage of the PP’s decline. The PP’s ability to govern in three regions will now depend on reaching pacts with emerging center-right group Ciudadanos. What’s more, Ahora Madrid candidate Manuela Carmena – who ran in the Madrid mayoral race with the backing of anti-austerity group Podemos – and Ada Colau – a former anti-eviction activist-turned politician – are likely to be confirmed as mayors of the Spanish and Catalan capital cities, respectively. Pacts between left-wing parties such as Podemos and the Socialist Party (PSOE) will hold the key to future governments, which will likely see the PP kept out of power. The PP is well aware that it will no longer be able to hold on to the power it achieved in the 2011 elections, which saw it win 11 regions and 3,771 municipal councils from a

total of 8,119 (47%). That result was mostly thanks to the electorate’s anger at the PSOE for its tardy reaction to the economic crisis. This time around, however, the political map has changed completely, with emerging groups such as Podemos and Ciudadanos offering what voters have seen as a genuine alternative to the PP-PSOE two-party system, in place since the 1980s when Spain returned to democracy. Four years ago the PP was 10 points ahead of the PSOE in terms of total votes, but Sunday saw that advantage down to just two points. That takes the country back to the previous decade, when there was barely any difference between the major parties. The difference in 2015, of course, is that the share of votes for both has also been reduced. In the 2011 elections the PP and the PSOE accounted for 65% of the vote. That figure has now fallen to 52%. The PP has lost 2.5 million votes, while the PSOE’s support has fallen by 700,000. Each of the main parties is seen as the alternative to the other – the emerging parties, meanwhile, called on voters to throw both out of power. Podemos and Ciudadanos have managed to upset the two-party system, even though they still lag way behind in terms of the percentage of the vote. Podemos did not present candidates using the party name so it is hard to pin down a figure, but Ciudadanos managed to establish itself as the third party, with 7% of the votes. Podemos has managed to take away the PSOE’s ability to take advantage of the decline of the PP and has left the Socialists in a position where they depend on other groups to govern – only in the Asturias region did they emerge victorious. In Madrid, meanwhile, Manuela Carmena,

the candidate for Ahora Madrid (the local party presented by Podemos, among other leftist groups), secured 20 seats compared to 21 for Esperanza Aguirre (PP), who fell short of a majority. An Ahora Madrid pact with the PSOE will see Carmena sworn in as mayor. The PP has admitted that it will be “incredibly difficult” to govern in Madrid and has also applied this interpretation to other regional capitals and large cities. When Carmena made a victorious speech in Madrid late Sunday night she promised to deliver “change” in the capital. The PP, then, is preparing to lose its majorities in Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia and Madrid, as well as three other regional governments, where it rules in minority, in Aragón, Extremadura and the Balearics. In Castilla y León, La Rioja and Murcia it will have to negotiate with Ciudadanos to stay in power. Podemos and Ciudadanos have managed to upset the two-party system, even though they still lag way behind in terms of the percentage of the vote In the Canaries and Navarre, the PP has been relegated to irrelevancy, thanks to pacts between a number of parties, while in Asturias the PSOE’s Javier Fernández will stay in power. The problem that now faces the PP when it comes to reaching pacts with Ciudadanos is the fact that candidates from the former freely attacked those from the latter during the campaign, criticizing their “ambiguous ideology” and calling them a “second-rate PSOE.”Ciudadanos, for its part, has said it will not negotiate deals with the PP unless it agrees to introduce party primaries, which the latter so far refuses to do. Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD) and United Left (IU), meanwhile, were relegated to complete irrelevance in last night’s polls, having lost out entirely to the emerging political players.

May 2015

Unnamed art world sources have told the New York Post that the mystery buyer of Pablo Picasso’s Les Femme d’Algers (Version “O”) is the former Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. Al Thani bought the piece for $179.4 million on May 11 in a record setting purchase of the most expensive work ever sold at an auction Pablo Picasso, Les Femme d’Algers (Version “O”), 1955. The concepts aren’t exactly universal, but they encapsulate a broad range of methods for approaching a design problem, Lupton said. One example she points to are diagonals. Victorian-era posters largely used centered type, which dragged down the overall layout. Then modern designers made a simple, but surprisingly effective change, using diagonal lines and compositions to create depth, motion, and direct the viewer’s eyes. A Spanish Civil War poster, for example, designed by José Bardasano Baos features a giant glass of water canted at a diagonal. (The poster promotes the democratically When most museums put on poster exhibits, they elected government's success tend to walk viewers through the histories of different in improving public hygiene in artistic styles, ranging from Art Nouveau to Bauhaus. The museum’s veteran senior curator of contemporary design, Ellen Lupton, aimed to host a non-traditional but accessible exhibition explaining the principles of visual communications that designers use to create posters in the first place. How Posters Work is gem of a show that gives visitors an opportunity to learn the logic behind the format. The designer created dynamism in the poster but ignored the laws of gravity!” Digging through the Cooper Hewitt’s collection, Lupton discovered lost treasures, like a pair of World War II posters published by the U.S. Office of War Information. Both posters sought to discourage soldiers and civilians from idle talk about troop movements, because such chatter could fall into enemy hands and cause Allied ships to sink. One poster offers a more detailed narrative of a sinking ship, while the other uses a single, striking image of a sailor about to drown, with just the headline “Someone talked!” It’s works like these that prove the value of posters in a design context—but that also crystallize the format’s place in the history of commercial, political, and public life. http://www.theatlantic.com

A short drive inland through the mountain ranges of the Cierra de las Estancias and the Sierra de los Filabres brings you to numerous charming villages and towns, enveloped in stunning countryside of olive groves, citrus orchards and dramatic hills and valleys. One such town is Albox, situated in the heart of the Almanzora Valley, situated 420m above sea level and approximately 130km from the provincial capital of Almeria. History: The name derives from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish term for forest ‘el bosque’. The origens of Albox date back to Medieval times when the ancient fort town was located on a hill nearby to its current location. In 1503 it was completely destroyed by an earthquake and most of its historical buildings were lost. The town was reconstructed from scratch in its current location. Facilities: Albox is a traditional white-washed Spanish market town with a population of around 11,000 inhabitants, of which a small percentage are foreign ex-pat residents. The town has all the facilities and service one would expect from a modern small town: shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, approximately 21km away. The name derives from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish term for forest ‘el bosque’. Market Town: A large market is held every Tuesday morning and a smaller market on Saturday mornings. On market days the neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic and stalls open up selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. Jamons (cured ham on the bone) can be found hanging from stalls and shop windows; dozens of varieties of queso (cheese), chorizo (cured sausage) and many more delicacies are on show. The market is extensive, with street upon street, a myriad of noise, colour and smells. In fact you can find just about anything in the Albox market.

area (above a hall console or table in a corner). Be sure your mirror reflects something interesting.

Mirror, mirror on the wall . . . Reflective glass can be decorating magic for one and all! Wall mirrors serve as looking glasses, double the view they reflect, and add sparkle. Perhaps best of all, mirrors make spaces seem larger, a real bonus for a too-small room.

Framed wall mirrors for home decorating

Selecting framed mirrors that echo the shape of other furniture is always a safe bet. In a dining room with round- or shield-back chairs, for example, a round mirror above the mantel is a subtle unifying element. Mirror frames come in every conceivable furniture style and period, including such favorites as Chippendale, Federal, the Louises, and Contemporary, so matching mirror and furniture style is easy. But using a large Contemporary mirror to add an eclectic note to a Place a mirror Traditional scheme, for example, is perfectly acceptable. where you want to see your own For the non-traditionalist, you can find many fabulous reflection (an ethnic, whimsical, and purely creative styles — or entry hall), reflect whip up your own. For example, take two white-birch an interesting branches, cross them at the bottom (attaching them view (opposite a with glue and tiny nails), round them gently around a window), create a round mirror glued onto a plywood circle, then cross strong focal point them at the top (with some leaves attached) and (above a mantel), secured them. The branches would make a delightful or light up a dark frame for a mirror in a summer cottage's entry hall.

painted and decorated finishes. Match the frame's finish to the level of formality or informality of your furniture. Choose one that contrasts with the wall it's hung against: a dark frame to hang against a light wall or vice versa. Traditionally, you want the mirror frame to relate to the furniture below it in value (one shouldn't be too much lighter or darker than the other), if not in color. In Contemporary interiors, contrast is key, and eclecticism is perfectly okay. Wall mirror frame materials include finished wood, metal, bamboo, and stained glass. Newer, more eccentric designs may

natural-looking leaves and flowers as well as jewel the wall, the more elaborate the frame may be. In an artsy room, the busier both are, the better. Frame size is also important. Like a work of art, a mirror shouldn't be wider than the furniture below it nor less than two-thirds the width. If a mirror is too narrow to adequately fill the wall space, add paintings or sconces on either side. For more drama, hang a mirror vertically above a chest or console. Excursions from Roquetas

There are some delightful natural areas just a short drive from Roquetas. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park is less than one hour's drive from Roquetas. The cape itself is visible across the bay and beyond that there are the unspoilt beaches and unique wildlife of the protected coastal reserve. It is also only an hour's drive to the Alpujarras - that delightful area of picturesque white villages that cling to the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. It is but half an hour's journey if one accepts that the mountain village of Enix is, in fact, part of that delightful region made famous by writers Gerald

Brenan and Chris Stewart. Certainly, on arriving at the village in the Sierra de Gádor there is a sign welcoming visitors to the Alpujarra Almeriense. As far as I am concerned it is just one of the delightful mountain villages to visit whenever I wish to go for a short drive from the coastal resort of Roquetas de Mar which, incidentally has over 300 sunny days per year. No wonder the welcoming signs in Roquetas say "Roquetas de Mar también en invierno" - also in winter! Inequality between rich and poor has hit record highs, OECD warns

In Spain, 18% of the population lives below poverty line, twice as many as before the crisis Inequality between the rich and the poor has reached its highest level in certain countries since the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) began keeping records 30 years ago. The crisis has widened this gap in economies such as Spain’s, due to, among other factors, higher taxation and social spending cuts. A new report entitled In It Together: Why Less Inequality Benefits All shows that “wealth is even more concentrated at the top than income, exacerbating the overall disadvantage of low-income households.” The study is based on data from the 34 countries that make up the OECD, which is an international economic organization aimed at stimulating economic progress and world trade. Among the 34 members are 21 of the 28 European Union states, as well as the US, Mexico, Japan, Australia and South Korea. In Spain, household income dropped an average annual 3.5% between 2007 and 2011, similar to Ireland and Iceland “In 2012, the bottom 40% owned only 3% of total household wealth in the 18 OECD countries with comparable data. By contrast, the top 10% controlled half of all

IMF calls on Spain to raise VAT and lower corporate taxes Over 27% of Spanish population at risk of poverty or social exclusion Three million in extreme poverty Meanwhile, the bottom 10% of poor Spanish homes lost average annual income of 13% over the same period, while the 10% wealthiest only lost 1.5%. Pre-tax inequality levels had been stable before the crisis, but soared with the economic downturn and continue to grow despite a slight recovery, says the OECD. This is because of high jobless rates and tax adjustments that have affected unemployment benefits, education and investment. This trend is visible in Spain, Greece and Ireland. In Spain, there have been additional measures adding to this growing inequality. Fiscal consolidation raised taxes on income and spending (in 2011 and 2013), while social cuts in 2013 affected the lower earners. Fiscal consolidation raised taxes on income and spending in Spain, while social cuts have affected the lower earners A rise in temporary jobs and wage differences between men and women also played a role. In this case, the worst performers are Germany, Mexico and Spain.

total household wealth and the wealthiest 1% owned 18%,” says the report. In Spain, household income dropped an average annual 3.5% between 2007 and 2011, similar to the figures for Ireland and Iceland.

As a result, poverty has increased between 2007 and 2011. Across all OECD countries, the population below the poverty line grew from 1% to 9.4%. In Spain, that figure is an alarming 18%, nearly twice as much as before the crisis. And it is often youngsters, not the elderly, who are more likely to fall into poverty.

Ho Chi Minh Trail III

By 1970 America was bombing the trail with 200 aircraft a day. The NVA responded by adding more anti aircraft guns until 1500 were stationed along the route. The American C-130 Spectre gunship was used on night time raids and accounted for over half of the 4000 lorries destroyed that year. It wasn’t until 1972 when Russian made Sam-7 missiles protected the convoys that things got tougher for the Americans. In neighbouring Cambodia there was a military coup with alleged CIA involvement; there was a strong anti communist fervour in Cambodia and suddenly the NVA lost the use of the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville which was close to the Vietnamese border. In response the NVA took over a large part of Laos called the Bolaven Plateau bordering Vietnam. They built new roads including one 1000km long to the south of Laos. The NVA now were fighting to keep parts of Cambodia for its supply routes. By increasing the amount of Laos they operated in; the 50km wide network of trails suddenly was 150 km wide. Abandoned American bases were taken over. After the propaganda success in 1968 of the Tet offensive, America had been steadily withdrawing its forces; instead training and supplying the South Vietnamese military (ARVN). A process they called Vietnamization. In 1971 an invasion force 20,000 strong of ARVN soldiers crossed into Laos to attack the trail and its main supply hub at Tchepone. With

American air support all went well at first until the NVA government in Hanoi made the decision to defend their territory; within days they had 60,000 troops on the counter attack. Instead of their usual guerrilla tactics they used conventional techniques with heavy artillery and large infantry attacks. Anti aircraft guns damaged and destroyed over 700 American/South Vietnamese helicopters so they started to run out of supplies. In the end the Americans launched a huge air attack so that the ARVN could escape back to Vietnam but 10,000 of them were dead or wounded. In 1972 the NVA attacked the northernmost province held by the ARVN using 300 tanks and further attacks gained them more territory but they lost 100’s of thousands of soldiers. By 1973 the Americans had left Vietnam and the two sides were supposed to be negotiating the peace via the Paris Peace Accords. Both sides violated the agreements and the Americans also secretly resupplied the ARVN in the south. The trail was now extended from Laos into

Vietnam itself – firstly a 2 lane road and by 1974 It was a paved dual carriageway along with a 4 line fuel pipeline that ended just north of Saigon (modern day Ho Chi Minh City.) The North Vietnamese finally put an end to the war by invading Saigon in April 29th 1975. The Americans launched the largest ever air evacuation; their military personnel, civilians and any South Vietnamese that were lucky enough to get the correct paperwork. It started as an aircraft evacuation until a South Vietnamese pilot defected and bombed the last intact runway. (His plane is in the Ho Chi Minh museum.) The evacuation was instead done by helicopter and ended up a rout. From the American Embassy alone, over 2000 were flown out. The North Vietnamese didn’t fire on any evacuating aircraft. On April 30th Saigon fell and the Ho Chi Minh Trail had served its purpose!

more to children between the ages of 10 and 14. "That's the age when I started tuning in more to issues I cared about and trying to make a difference," she explained to People. "I loved the book 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth and remember wishing there were books like that on other issues I cared about. This book is my attempt to do that for kids today." She continued, "I want my daughter to grow up in a

world where kids are informed about what's happening, feel empowered to make a difference and ultimately take action on issues they care about." Chelsea added that since becoming a mother to Charlotte Mezvinsky, she wants her "daughter to grow up in a world where kids are informed about what's happening, feel empowered to make a difference and ultimately take action on issues they care about." http://uk.eonline.com

The broadcaster was speaking to BBC Radio 2's Chris Evans in his first interview since losing his job over a "fracas" with a producer. Clarkson admitted he had taken phone calls from broadcasters who wanted to poach the Top Gear team but said: "I'd be a fool to jump into something." "I have been at the BBC for 27 years. SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT

THE ONLY PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!! LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM HOME INSIDE! Notary stats for March

Spanish residential property sales figures improve but prices keep sliding The latest statistical bulletin issued by the body representing Spain’s notaries reports that during the month of March a total of 34,736 residential properties were sold, making it one of the most active months in recent [Image: Notary stats for March: Spanish property market provides contrasting statistics] years. This figure is 12.3% higher than in the same month last year, despite the national statistics unit having reported only 2.1% more sales in the month of March. This is because the two sets of figures are out of synch with each other: the notaries report sales signed during the month, whereas the central statistics unit bases its figures on the sales and purchases registered: this often happens a couple of months after the sale is actually made and signed before a notary. In other words, it is likely that the central statistics unit’s figures will show a significant year-on-year improvement during April and May, if the notaries’ data are reflected over this period. At the same time the importance of the new-build market continues to decrease: the figures show a 32.6% contraction of this sector over the last year, while there were 19.8% more transactions completed in the second hand market than in March 2014. The number of mortgage loans signed is also reported to be on the way up, with a total of 14,755 representing an increase of 27.6% compared to March last year. The average loan capital rose by just 0.5% to 118,587€ The good news for the market is tempered, though, by the notaries also reporting that the average price of the properties changing hands in March was 7.5% lower than in the same month last year. Most of this was due to a 14.6% decrease in the average price per square metre of new-build apartments, while a fall of only 3.7% was noted in the second hand market. Detached house prices are reported to have dropped by 10.2% over the last twelve months. This is the most significant decrease they have reported for some time, and average prices are now reported to have fallen by 36.3% since July 2007. REF: SOL 055 Price: 199.000€

Real estate agents report an increased confidence in Spanish property market

There is a renewed confidence in the Spanish property market with both Spanish and English speaking agents recording an increase in overseas buyers. The latest Spanish property market confidence index from Kyero covering the first quarter of 2015 says that overall 71% of real estate agents feel more confident than they did a year ago and just 4% less confident. The survey also reveals that 30% of English speaking agents see stronger Sterling as being responsible for the most significant shift in the Spanish property market while Spanish agents believe that increased marketing is boosting sales. Some 56% of Spanish speaking agents and 57% of English speaking agents said that sales have increased, 34% and 31% said sales were static and 10% and 12% said sales had fallen. But there was a considerable difference of opinion regarding property prices. Some 49% of English speaking agents said prices have increased, but just 18% of Spanish speaking agents agreed. Indeed, 57% of Spanish agents said prices had remained the same compared to 34% of English speaking agents. A quarter, 25% of Spanish speaking agents said prices had fallen, and 17% of English speaking agents. Both Spanish speaking and English speaking agents reported a rise in buyers from overseas, at 59% and 64% respectively. Some 38% of Spanish speaking agents and 28% of English speaking agents said there was no change while 4% and 8% said there were fewer international buyers. Almeria, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Murcia are highlighted as inspiring the most confidence, according to the index which surveyed 160 English speaking and 216 Spanish speaking estate agents

across Spain. Martin Dell, director of Kyero, said that while the strength of Sterling has played a key role for English speaking agents who have used it to boost interest, Spanish speaking agents have taken a different approach. ‘While English speaking agents in Spain have been able to enjoy more confidence in the market thanks to the pound’s movements, their Spanish peers have been working flat out on their marketing activity in order to achieve the same goal,’ he explained. However, both sets of respondents reported similar figures when it came to buyer confidence, with 20% of English speaking agents feeling that improved buyer confidence had been the most significant change over the past 12 months, compared with 21% of Spanish speaking agents. VISIT ALMERIA CITY

In the centre of the city is La Rambla, Avenide de Frederico Garcia Lorca, a long tree lined avenue that leads down to the port and beaches, it has a vibrant and modern feel with bustling street cafes, tempting shops, feature water fountains, and play areas for children. With easy access from the motorway there is plenty of underground parking. Close by is Paseo de Almeria, the main road for serious shoppers, with its neighbouring streets packed with appealing little boutiques. Avenida del Mediterraneo, runs right through the city centre and is home to the Mediterraneo shopping complex. Hotels are readily signposted, as are the convenient train and bus stations. Not without its traditional bullring, the Plaza de Toros de Almeria dates back to 1888 and has a capacity for over 9,000 spectators. A huge iron railway bridge, Cables Ingles, constructed by a British mining company in the early 20th century, dominates the landscape at one end of the port, part of the industrial heritage of the city, from the mining era of Almeria, it is now being restored to be promoted as a tourist

attraction. The ferry terminal by the port offers trips across the Mediterranean sea to North Africa, and the Parque de Nicolas Salmeron, a narrow strip of approximately one kilometre in length, situated between the port and the city streets, provides green areas and shaded seating. The Barrio de la Chanca, the cave quarter, is part of the old town, and has been depicted in many artistic impressions. There are still some families living in the colourful cave like dwellings which are part built into the rocks of the hillside on which the Alcazaba stands. The tourist train, which runs at the weekend, takes a route through the old quarter and port area, offering a relaxing way to see the city sights. The starting point for the train is at Plaza de Emilio Perez and the timetable is available from the Almeria Turismo website. Located in the heart of the Old Quarter, on the site of a former Arabic souk, the Aire de Almeria has recovered an ancient Arabic baths and restored an ancient tradition. A testimony to the Muslim presence that enriched the cultural

May 2015

and social heritage of Almeria city, here, in luxurious surroundings it is possible to indulge ones self in the custom of Arabic bathing, incorporating the ritual of moderate, warm and cold immersions to cleanse the mind and body. A trip to the city would not be complete without experiencing its nightlife and local cuisine. The restaurants and bars in the centre of town are located between Paseo de Almeria and La Rambla and the area is noted for it excellent seafood and tapas. Almeria City commemorates many fiestas, having religious or historical connotations they are celebrated round the clock with passion and enthusiasm, such momentous local occasions where everyone is made welcome. The Almeria Turismo website provides details and dates of the Almeria city fiestas. The beaches of Almeria city, located east of the port area, are deserving of and detailed in a separate page. While the fabulous city beaches are obviously the most convenient there are some lovely rural beaches away from the city bustle that are within easy reach.

Urban land prices have dropped by more than 45% since their maximum values, but in 2014 registered an increase of 5.2% at a national level, which reinforces the theory of stabilisation in the market. This improvement, observed mainly in the areas of increased activity such as Andalucía, Madrid, Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country, has also resulted in an increase in transactions. Thus, during the 2014 fiscal year, the number of sales transactions amounted to a total of 15,900 (9.2% more than in 2013), according to data provided by the Ministry of Public

Results of a study prepared by BBVA Research show that the rest of the market indicators are also being affected positively by the rhythm that marks the fundamentals of demand, with renewed access to credit on attractive terms after years of restrictions driving activity in the mortgage market, encouraged by the fixed interest rates and the forecast that the Euribor will continue to fall. Thus, according to El Mundo, the granting of mortgages for the purchase of a home increased by 19% in February compared with the previous year.

Good prospects also surround the construction sector, with the statistics once again showing an increase in cement consumption – volume increased in March by 8.2% year-on-year – as well as in the number of licences issued for the construction of new homes, which broke a negative seven year streak at the end of 2014 Source: keyero

Recent real estate statistics show that the market recovery in Spain is on track. The incipient recovery, already acknowledged by some experts in the sector, is now beginning to leave its mark on the employment data (construction is one of the sectors where unemployment has fallen most), the consumption of construction materials, the granting of mortgages and, above all, the urban land market.

Looking after your barbecue Keep your barbecue in tiptop condition with these handy tips. With a little bit of love, and a few minutes, you too can have a perfect barbecue that will last through plenty of parties, and for many years to come.

Step 1 – Remove excess food One of your barbecue's biggest enemies is food that gets stuck to the surface and forgotten about. To combat this, when you've finished cooking, brush the large pieces of food off the surface, then turn the burners to high with the hood open for five minutes. Step 2 – Clear out the gas Clear any excess gas out of your barbeque hose, to protect the barbecue and avoid any unexpected flare ups, by turning the gas cylinder off before you switch off the burners. Step 3 – Wash it down If you don't expect to use your barbecue for a little while, give it a good wash down once the gas is safely off. Using warm water and a barbeque brush, scrub the cooking surface, grill and hotplates thoroughly. Use a cloth to wipe down the knobs and any surface that has been

splattered with grease. Step 4 – Oil it up If you have a cast iron hotplate or grill, try spraying a light coating of vegetable or canola oil spray on the still warm surface to protect it from rust and to prevent food from sticking the next time you use it. Step 5 – Cover it up It's important to protect the barbecue's surface from the elements, so once it has completely cooled down, make sure you close the hood or replace the lid. Cover the barbecue with a specialty cover and store it in a dry area to preserve its finish and protect it from the elements.

The Sculpture Competition

Chairman Mao Tse-tung produced perhaps the most famous ‘Little Red Book’ and its subsequent effects were profound, for good or bad, on the people of the newly formed People’s Republic of China. Loco Paco’s ‘Pequeño Libro Rojo’ may have slightly different effects. It wasn’t Paco’s idea. He didn’t have ideas just a collection of random inconsequential and ridiculous notions which have nothing to do with the real world or any accepted reality. This of course made Paco, if he wanted to pursue such a career of course, the archetypical politician. One wonders at the sanity of anyone even wanting to ask Paco about his thoughts, then to have the courage to sit and listen to them and then to publish the gibberish. It could perhaps be the greatest literary feat of all time or it could send an entire generation running to the psychiatrist’s door. The consequences of allowing the thoughts of someone who is clinically insane, addled and completely barmy such as Paco free reign within a susceptible society are to say the least indeterminate. The book’s production was fraught with problems from day one. A dozen proof readers sought professional help while others regarded Paco as a cult figure and initiated the ‘Church of the Divine Paco’. They worshipped him, ‘Benjy’, his Saharan Dung Beetle and even his imaginary five-foot tall rodent called ‘Bert’. Those associated with the project arrived ashen faced and shaken for their morning’s work. They left dazed, confused and suicidal at

the end of the day.

Work however progressed and ‘El Pequeño Libro Rojo de Loco Paco’ was eventually ready for its launch. Loco Paco, resplendent in Alqueria Unido football shorts, sequined halter necked top and DMS army boots duly arrived for the book signing. Whether Paco was conscious of the occasion is debatable as he scrawled all sorts of inane messages across the fly sheets of his work. He signed whatever name came into his head including Adolf Hitler, Marilyn Monroe and the Dalai Lama. Gems of wisdom for all occasions sprung forth from the publication. Of sport and in particular football came. ‘It is better to equalise before the other side score’. Of holy-wedlock he said. ‘Marriage is like a glorious landscape: a vast empty expanse with little humanity’. Of artificial stimulants he was quoted as saying. ‘The effects of alcohol to sustain, lift the spirits and inspire wisdom are only temporary if one stupidly ceases to drink. So did Paco’s book inspire a generation? You try buying a copy from Amazon.

Black Holes and Holidays

We’ve just come back from an excellent holiday in Portugal. We were away for 8 days, which stretched the Biggs organisational ability to its fullest extent. I have a theory that there is some imbalance in the Universe, some twitch in the fabric of Time, some Cosmic ripple, which manifest itself randomly throughout our lives, but is noticeable specifically around holidays. For instance, normally I can sail through 24 hours with reasonable tranquillity. I get up, sort out the menagerie and get my housework done as well as any other mundane delights, such a shopping, cleaning the pool, or cleaning the car (though that doesn’t happen often) get lunch, tie up all the loose end jobs that didn’t get done in the morning, have a cup of tea, feed the animals again, get supper going, sit down with a glass of wine, eat supper and flop in front of the television to enjoy something that requires no mental or physical exertion on my part. There are days where the job list is exactly the same, yet even though I run round like a ferret on speed only half the jobs get done, and so have to be added to tomorrow’s itinerary. Why? Everything is the same, yet the size of the day seems to have shrunk, and doesn’t fit into its allocated time, much like jeans that have been in the wardrobe for a time, and come out smaller than they were when they were last worn. Holidays, however, have an even greater disruptive influence on the Time continuum. I can creep up on them surreptitiously, packing a few items at a time over a period of days,

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk so that they don’t see me coming, but of course, returning from holiday is a different matter – that can not be disguised, it happens all at once! How is it that although my house has been empty, it is dusty, and the floor needs sweeping? Who made the dust? Where did the fluff come from? And why has everything in the garden grown to Triffid proportions? I’ve only been gone for a week, yet everything seems to have put on more growth than it normally would in a month. But more than all that, I took one suitcase; so how come there is so much washing? The machine hasn’t stopped for days! I think the washing conundrum is something to do with Black Holes. If things disappear down them then they must come out somewhere – I think that they come out in my washing machine!

May- 2015

Spicy chickpea burgers with mango salsa A simple veggie burger with a nice kick of spice. Serve with a zesty mango salsa for a snack that's full of flavour.

Ingredients: 1 cucumber 75g/2½oz feta cheese, drained 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 3 tbsp pomegranate seeds

Ingredients: 400g tin chickpeas in water 2 free-range eggs 2 tsp curry powder 100g/3½oz breadcrumbs 2 tbsp vegetable oil salt and pepper For the mango salsa

Method:

Top, tail and then peel the cucumbe r. Cut into 1.5-2cm/¾in thick slices to give about 16-18 in total. Using a melon baller, small teaspoon or a ¼ teaspoon measuring spoon, scoop out enough of the seeds from the middle to give a cup that has a border about 5mm thick, making sure you don’t go right dow n to the bottom. Arrange them on a large platter and set aside. Break the feta cheese into a small bowl and mash it with a fork until as smooth as possible. Add the dill and season with the pepper (but no salt as feta is already salty), stirring everything together well. Divide the feta cheese mixture between the cucu mber cups. Arrange a little pile of pomegranate seeds on top of each one and serve.

Method:

Drain the chickpeas and tip them into a bowl. Crack in the eggs. Add the curry powder and breadcrumbs, season with salt and pepper, then mash together using a potato masher or fork until you have a rough paste. Using your hands, shape the mixture into 8 small patties. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan and drain on a plate lined with kitchen paper. In the meantime, stone, peel and dice the mango and put it into a small mixing bowl. Thinly slice the spring onion and add it to the bowl. Add the dried mint and chilli flakes and season with salt and pepper. Preheat the grill to high. Slice the pittas in half and lightly toast them. Serve the burgers with the pittas and salsa.

Method:

This simple, hearty salad is a vegan feast packed with chilli, herbs and spices. It’s also gluten-free and dairy-free.

Black bean and avocado salad Ingredients:

For the dressing 4 tbsp lime juice 7 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3-4 jalapeño peppers (or 1 red chilli), finely chopped, to taste 1 garlic clove, minced pinch ground cumin salt and freshly ground black pepper For the salad 3 x 400g tins cooked black beans, drained large handful chopped fresh

coriander 4 medium tomatoes, chopped into wedges, seeds removed (or 16cherry tomatoes, halved) 1 large red pepper, stalk and seeds removed, sliced into thin strips 1 red onion, thinly sliced 5 spring onions, trimmed and thinly sliced (or 1 small red onion, thinly sliced) 200g/7oz fresh watercress, tough stems snipped into half 2 large ripe avocados, skin and seeds removed, cut into cubes

1 mango 1 spring onion half a lime, juice only ½ tsp dried mint pinch chilli flakes To serve 4 wholemeal pittas

Put all of the dressing ingredients in a jam jar, replace the lid and shake until well combined. Season with salt and pepper. Add more chilli if desired. For the salad, rinse the black beans under cold running water and drain. Put in a large mixing bowl and pour over half of the dressing. Add the remaining salad ingredients, apart from the watercress and avocado and stir well to combine. To serve, divide the watercress among 4 serving plates. Spoon the salad on top, then cover with the avocado cubes. Drizzle a little more dressing over each portion.

What is a vegetarian?

Broadly defined, a vegetarian is a person who does not eat meat, poultry, and fish. Vegetarians eat mainly fruit, vegetables, legumes, grains, seeds, and nuts. Many vegetarians eat eggs and/or dairy products but avoid hidden animal products such as beef and chicken stocks, lard, and gelatin. Why are people vegetarians? People are vegetarians for many reasons, including concern for personal health and the environment, economic and world hunger concerns, compassion for animals, belief in nonviolence, food preferences, or spiritual reasons. People may become vegetarians for one reason, and then later on adopt some of the other reasons as well. Vegetarian diets are somewhat more common among adolescents with eating disorders than in the general population. According to the ADA position paper on vegetarian diets, however, “recent data suggest that adopting a vegetarian diet does not lead to eating disorders, rather that vegetarian diets may be selected to camouflage an existing eating disorder.” Be sure you fully understand your own reasons for choosing vegetarianism. What are the health benefits of a vegetarian diet? According to the ADA, vegetarians are at lower risk for developing: • Heart disease • Colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers • Diabetes • Obesity • Hypertension (high blood pressure) This is because a healthy vegetarian diet is typically low in fat and high in fiber. However, even a vegetarian diet can be high in fat if it includes excessive amounts of fatty snack foods, fried foods, whole milk dairy products, and eggs. Therefore, a vegetarian diet, like any healthy diet, must be well planned in order to help prevent and treat certain diseases.

Method:

Are there any health risks in becoming a vegetarian? Some vegans may have intakes for vitamin B-12, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, and occasionally riboflavin that are lower than recommended. Do vegetarians get proper nutrition? The key to any healthy diet is to choose a wide variety of foods, and to consume enough calories to meet your energy needs. It is important for vegetarians to pay attention to these five categories in particular. Protein, Calcium, Vitamin D, Iron, Vitamin B-12 What about athletes? Being both an athlete and a vegetarian can be challenging, especially for vegans. It can be difficult to eat a volume of food high enough to meet an athlete’s high caloric needs.

pause for thought

In my schooldays the Summer Term was always known as ‘Trinity’, which seemed pretty meaningless to me, so full marks to anyone who realises that this title resulted from the fact that the Sunday 8 weeks after Easter, 31st May this year, is known as Trinity Sunday. Great, but what’s it all about? And what difference should this make for ordinary folk? Well, Trinity is the last major festival in the Church year, which starts with Advent; a time when we prepare for the coming of the Messiah, not just in his birth but also for a promised future return. This is followed by celebration of his birth at Christmas and his relevance to, and worship by gentiles (non Jews) at Epiphany. Next, we’ve had Lent where we recall Christ’s temptations as for 40 days he prepared for his brief ministry in Palestine, then Easter, when we remember his suffering, his death and his resurrection, after which he continued to teach and inspire a considerable number of his associates until, at Ascension, just 40 days after Easter, the Bible asserts that he visibly rose to be engulfed by clouds. Then 10 days later, at Pentecost, whilst these same followers were waiting, perhaps in some trepidation, for direction, then suddenly, what could only be described as the

Spirit of God himself came to them, changing them out of all recognition from timid folk, scared of their own shadows to being outspoken, bold and quite literally, inspired. It was as a conclusion to the amazing climax of following the Christian experience from the depths of Christ’s death through Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost that the festival of Trinity, just a week after Pentecost, was introduced, proclaiming the amazing understanding that God the Father, Jesus, the Son and the Holy Spirit of Pentecost were all in fact representations of the same God. Not three separate Gods, as some might have you believe, but just one, revealed to humanity in all his threedimensional magnificence. No wonder the disciples were ‘blown away’ by this discovery! Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch. org .Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@ avired.com

EU agrees 1.8bn-euro loan to cash-strapped Ukraine

The EU has agreed a €1.8bn (£1.3bn; $2bn) loan to Ukraine - the largest financial deal with a non-EU member. The agreement was signed at an EU summit in Riga, Latvia, which brings together the leaders of the 28-member bloc and six post-Soviet nations. The loan aims to help revive the cash-strapped economy of Ukraine, which has also been badly affected by fighting with pro-Russian rebels in the east. It requires Ukraine to adopt reforms, including anti-corruption measures. In

Huercal-Overa Draw Play Off First Leg

Last Saturday saw Huercal-Overa CF welcome CD Palencia in the first leg play off for promotion to the Segunda B division. There was a full house at “El Hornillo” to cheer on Los Rojos, the club had arranged for extra seating to be placed on the standing side of the stadium to increase capacity to 1000 seats then another 600 standing made up the 1600 attendance which is the highest this season. The game started of tentatively with both sides feeling out the opposition, the deadlock was broken in the 24th minute when Tomas Campanas fired home and gave the home side the lead to the joy of the local fans. The lead was short lived, as in the 34th minute Xavi More saw the ball past a helpless Paco in the Huercal-Overa net. The visiting side then took the lead in the second half on 73 minutes through Diego Torres (the visitors top scorer with 25 in the regular season), the striker should have been sent off from numerous dreadful challenges, he also looked to strike Mansour in the face but this was missed by the officials.

The party mood that had started an hour before kick off dropped as the visitors were playing out to a 2-1 victory until Los Huercalenses turned the screw, Carmona slugging away down the left and Chinchilla giving a little more strength and precision on the ball. The equaliser came with only 3 minutes to go, Tomas Campanas on the score sheet again to the joy of the home fans, the party had begun again! The game finished at 2-2 with the second leg to be played in Palencia on Sunday the 31st May, everyone at the Sol Times wished the team the best of luck in the fight for promotion to the Segunda B! Mercedes apologise after Monaco GP error Mercedes apologised to Lewis Hamilton for what they admitted was the strategic error that cost him victory in the Monaco Grand Prix. Hamilton was leading when he was called in for fresh tyres during a late safety car period, dropping him to third. Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said: “The answer is we got the maths wrong. “That one goes on the team and I apologise. He’s a great leader and a great driver. I am sure he will understand sometimes we make errors.” The mistake handed victory to Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg and also cost Hamilton a position to Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. It cut the world champion’s advantage in the championship over Rosberg to 10 points. Hamilton was visibly distraught afterwards, but refused to blame the team for the error. After crossing the finish line, Hamilton slowed to a stop at the Portier corner - which faces out to the Mediterranean Sea - seemingly to gather his thoughts.
