Spain marks 30 years of European Union membership SPAIN'S and Portugal's 30th anniversary said Spain has shown that 'Europe means

of joining the European Union saw a flood of congratulations from MEPs and heads of State yesterday – although as yet it appears UK prime minister David Cameron was not among them. Whilst the 'talk of the town' for British expats in Spain centres on a referendum for or against a possible 'Brexit', Spain basked in praise from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, France's president François Hollande and foreign affairs minister for Italy, Sandro Gozi. Spain and Portugal signed the treaty that would make them part of the burgeoning common market, the EEC – a precursor to today's EU – on June 12, 1985, and the two countries' connections with the rest of the continent and its vast cultural, financial and ideological differences have shaped societies in both, turning them into modern, hi-tech nations overflowing with highly-qualified and cosmopolitan residents, of whom between 10% and 13% are foreign, including other Europeans. “Congratulations to Spain and all other Europeans,” said Germany's foreign ministry message. “Spain has a reliable partner in Germany – we will work together for growth, employment and innovation in Europe.” France described Spain as 'an essential partner', as it showed during the recent visit to the country by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia where they were given the full stately treatment hitherto only accorded to Queen Elizabeth II of the UK. “Spain has contributed greatly to building Europe via an unbreakable European commitment – today, we work together in all areas, whether it is the fight against terrorism, foreign security policies or common defence, including in Africa, but also in favour of a stronger Europe and greater solidarity in serving growth and employment,” France concluded. Italy's European affairs minister Sandro Gozi

democracy', since its own democratic 'career' – which started with the death of Franco and the swearing-in of the late president Adolfo Suárez a decade earlier – has been 'accompanied at every step' by Europe. “Thirty years of evolution for Spain through 30 years of belonging to Europe,” Gozi's message read, before concluding that Europe 'must be profoundly reformed' so that it can 'continue offering opportunities' to the rest of the continent 'as Spain has done'. Irish PM Enda Kenny drew sharp cultural and political comparisons between the Emerald Isle and Spain, recalling that both countries had 'brought a great deal' to the EU, but at the same time had 'benefited enormously from the advantages of being a member'. “Spain's signing happened during a very fertile period in the country's history, which confirmed its strong commitment to democratic values and integration with the rest of the Continent,” Kelly commented. “Belonging to the EU has caused profound and significant changes in both Ireland and Spain. It has helped us out of poverty and to improve our quality of life, reducing our feelings of isolation for being on the outer edges of Europe and, unquestionably, has positively transformed the lives of our people. “Spain and Ireland are coming out of a financial and economic crisis of many years, with great strength. Our membership of the EU has played a key role in this recovery.” European Commission president JeanClaude Juncker said Spain was 'reunited with its natural and political destiny' 30 years ago yesterday, pulling the country out of its 'international isolation' and bringing it closer to its European partners in terms of stability. European Parliamentary president Martin Schulz commented on the 'great steps forward' Spain had achieved in its three decades in the EU, in terms of 'stability and reinforcement of democracy'.

Outraged’ opposition mayors take control of Madrid & Barcelona

Left wing party coalition leaders have been sworn in as mayors of Madrid and Barcelona, assuming control of the Spain’s two largest cities. This is yet another case of parts of Spain showing their opposition to the country’s conservative rule. In the Spanish capital, a 71-year-old former judge, Manuela Carmena has put an end to the 24 years of conservative mayorship. She defeated her rival, 63-year-old Esperanza Aguirre from the People's Party, in what proved to be a very close race. The new mayor managed to claim 20 seats in the city chamber during the May 24 vote against Aguirre’s 21. However, Carmena managed to forge an alliance with the main opposition Socialist Party to secure victory. She was officially elected mayor by 29 of the 57 council representatives on Saturday morning. Carmena, a former communist and rights activist, promised to improve the living conditions for the poor, who have been struggling since the 208 financial crisis. She also echoed the calls of the massive Indignados (Outraged) protest movement that was formed in 2011 to fight corruption, government spending cuts and evictions. “We are at the service of the citizens of Madrid. We want to govern by listening. We want them to call us by our first names,” Carmena said after being voted in. Among her chief promises to the electorate are the development of public transport and increased support for poor families. She has promised to slash her salary by more than half to €45,000 ($51,000). In Barcelona, 41-year old Ada Colau, an active protest leader, has become the city’s first female mayor. She rose to publicity after helping to organize the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) movement, in

news

Barcelona in 2009, to defend citizens against evictions caused by the collapse of the Spanish property market. “Thank you for making possible something that had seemed impossible,” said Colau, representing the Barcelona en Comu party, after being elected mayor. Her administration will now draft a list of 30 measures aimed at creating jobs and fighting corruption. Along with her colleague in Madrid, Colau announced that she will slash her salary from €140,000, down to €35,000. Both Carmena and Colau secured victory during the May 24 local elections with the support of Pomedos, a new pro-worker and anti-establishment party that emerged last year. Parties born out of the Indignado protest movement now rule five major Spanish cities: Madrid, Valencia, Zaragoza, Cadiz, and Barcelona. The latest success of anti-establishment candidates in the two largest Spanish cities shows a major shift in the country’s politics, and erosion of the bipartisan system. The Popular Party and the main opposition Socialist Party together won just over half of the vote on May 24. The rest of the seats at the local elections went to candidates representing smaller populist parties who are demanding change. http://rt.com/

Rafael Nadal beats Viktor Troicki in Mercedes Cup, Stuttgart

Stuttgart (Germany) (AFP) - Rafael Nadal earned his second title of the season and his fourth on grass as he defeated Serb Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 on Sunday to become the first man to triumph on both clay and turf at the Stuttgart Open. The Spanish top seed set another minor record, as he won the inaugural grass edition after taking clay trophies here in 2005 and 2007. Stuttgart made the switch to grass starting with this edition as part of the new Wimbledon pre-season. Nadal’s 66th career title marked his second in 2015 after claiming a trophy on South American clay last February. The Spaniard now owns two grass titles at Wimbledon plus 2008 Queen’s Club, London and now Stuttgart. The 14-time grand slam champion who is ranked 10th, polished his record against eighth seed Troicki to 5-0, last facing the Serb in a Tokyo semi-final nearly five years ago. Nadal took victory as he played his his 95th career final, now standing 66-29 in finals. His last grass final came at Wimbledon in 2011 when he lost to Novak Djokovic. Troicki was playing his seventh career final - and first on grass - and now stands 2-5 in title matches. Nadal’s victory boosted him to 33-10 this season as he prepares for what he hopes is a better second half of 2015. He is now 17-2 in Stuttgart, where he last competed eight years ago. “I’m not bothered by the expectations of others,” said the 29-yearold. “I’m only motivated by my own goals, There is no pressure on me “It’s fantastic to win here on grass after winning on clay.

Victor is a tough opponent. “But I’ve been gaining confidence over the past month and a half after a very poor first three and a half months of this season. “I’ve been feeling my game better since after my first match in Monte Carlo (midApril). It was mentally tiring for me to play tennis in the first part of the year. I was not feeling comfortable on court. “I was not able to play the way that I wanted. I didn’t feel confidence. But that has been changing and my focus now if to prepare as best as I can for Wimbledon.” Nadal added: “My level has always been there, I’ve not forgotten how to play tennis. But now things are coming together for me.” Nadal spent 48 minutes in winning the opening set, which he took into a tiebreaker with a love game. The top seed grabbed the early 4-2 lead in the decider and fired a ninth ace to wrap up the opener. In the second, the Spaniard broke for 3-1 and took victory on his third match point, ending with 11 aces in the 88-minute contest. http://sports.yahoo.com/

Economic crisis denting Spaniards’ confidence in Europe, poll finds

5

Three decades after joining, Spanish support for the EU has slipped but

Thirty years have passed since Spain joined what was then the European Community and is now the European Union, and Spaniards are not sorry that they did. The country signed its adhesion treaty on June 12, 1985, integration took place on January 1, 1986, and it has consistently been one of the most enthusiastic members of the union ever since. But a new poll shows that Spaniards’ enthusiasm for all things European has declined somewhat in recent years, and that the crisis is to blame. Back in the 1980s, television was the most advanced technology most people had in their homes A survey conducted this week by pollster Metroscopia shows that 70 percent of Spaniards feel European integration was good for Spain. Yet in May 2009, that figure was 80 percent. But a majority of those surveyed valued Europe highly as a safe place that defends human rights, and expressed a desire for greater unity. Over 70 percent said the EU had managed to make armed conflict among its members “unthinkable.” On the economic front, however, 37 percent of respondents said joining the EU was bad for the Spanish economy, compared with 54 percent who saw it as beneficial. But the relative recovery seen in recent months could push that figure upward in future polls. The degree of skepticism varies according to respondents’ political

beliefs. Supporters of emerging antiausterity party Podemos expressed the most pessimistic views about the EU’s ability to pull Spain out of the crisis, while Popular Party voters were the most optimistic (77 percent), followed by supporters of Ciudadanos (67 percent) and the Socialist Party (57 percent). Immigrants stand in line to get residency papers in 1985. / RICARDO GUTIÉRREZ Metroscopia president José Juan Toharia noted that around 74 percent of respondents, regardless of age or ideology, feel proud that Spain is a member of the EU. “The emotional identification with the European project appears to successfully overcome the impact of seven years of social and economic hardship,” he said. What’s more, 80 percent of those surveyed said they felt both Spanish and European. In 2011, that figure was no higher than 54 percent. Much has changed since 1985, when then-prime minister Felipe González said Spain had the sentiment “of an old nation” and “the enthusiasm” of a new country. Source: elpais

Oliver! actor Ron Moody dies aged 91

Sir Christopher Lee dies at 93

Screen legend famous for roles in Hammer Horror films, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars dies in hospital after suffering heart and respiratory problems. The veteran actor, best known for a variety of films from Dracula to The Wicker Man through to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, passed away on Sunday morning at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, according to sources. The decision to release the news days after was based on his wife’s desire to inform family members first. The couple had been married for over 50 years. As well as his career in film, Lee also released a series of heavy metal albums, including Charlemagne: The Omens of Death. He was knighted in 2009 for services to drama and charity and was awarded the Bafta fellowship in 2011. His film career started in 1947 with a role in gothic romance Corridor of Mirrors but it wasn’t until the late 50s, when Lee worked with Hammer, that he started gaining fame. His first role with the studio was The Curse of Frankenstein and it was the first of 20 films that he made with Peter Cushing, who also became a close friend. “Hammer was an important part of my life, and generally speaking, we all had a lot of fun,” he said in a 2001 interview.

Grey: New Fifty Shades book 'stolen' Grey retells Fifty Shades of Grey through the eyes of protagonist Christian Grey A copy of EL James's latest Fifty Shades novel has been stolen ahead of its publication. Kent Police has launched an investigation after Random House discovered a copy of Grey had gone missing on Monday. It is feared thieves may leak the novel, or sell extracts to the media. The book, which re-tells the first instalment of the hit trilogy from billionaire Christian Grey's point of view, is due to be released next week. Random House and solicitors for the publisher would not give any other information about the missing book. "We have no comment to make due to an ongoing police investigation," a spokesman said. A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Officers are making inquiries after receiving a report that a book had been stolen on 8 June."

June 2015 May 2015

The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has sold more than 125 million copies worldwide since the first book's release in 2011. When announcing the release of Grey last week, James said she wrote the new book after "thousands of readers" had written to her requesting to hear Christian's point of view. "Christian is a complex character and readers have always been fascinated by his desires and motivations, and his troubled past," she said. "Also, as anyone who has ever been in a relationship knows, there are two sides to every story." Grey will be published on 18 June Christian Grey's birthday. http://www.bbc.com/

The actor first played the part in the stage production of Lionel Bart’s musical in both the West End and on Broadway, before making the movie. Speaking about the making of the film to The Guardian in 2012, Moody said he never expected to reprise his role because there had been “backstage hostilities” on the stage production. But he said, “that summer of 1967 was one of the happiest times of my life”. “My proudest moment was the number Reviewing the Situation. I suspect that, because I gave my all to the role, and because I was working with such a fine team of people, it inhibited my future career,” he added. “I turned down quite a few offers

afterwards because I thought the people didn’t come close to those I’d worked with on Oliver! - which in retrospect was a mistake.” The actor said his biggest regret was turning down an opportunity to become one of the incarnations of The Doctor in Doctor Who. But his lengthy career saw him play Captain Hook five times, Uriah Heep in David Copperfield, and the title role in Sherlock Holmes - the musical. His other films included Murder Most Foul, Legend of the Werewolf and The Spaceman. He is survived by his widow and six children. http://www.bbc.com/

Disney set to lose up to $140m on Tomorrowland

Loss would be biggest since studio’s $150m financial misfire The Lone Ranger in 2013 and John Carter’s $200m loss in 2012 There may be trouble ahead ... George Clooney in Tomorrowland. Disney is expected to lose up to $140m (£90m) on the George Clooney futuristic fantasy Tomorrowland, its biggest loss in two years, accordin g to the Hollywood Reporter. Brad Bird’s film, about an inventor (Clooney) who travels with a teenage girl to a strange utopia, cost $180m to produce but also featured a staggeri ng $150m marketing budget. So far it has made back just $170m in three weeks at the global box office, with future returns unlikely to radically change the financial picture. The film opened to just $40m at the US box office on 26 May, and failed to find its feet in China, the world’s second-largest film market, where it just $13.8m on debut earlier this month, to open behind the Japanes scored e anime Stand By Me Doraemon. The predicted loss of between $120m and $140m, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s sources, would be Disney’s biggest since Johnny Depp vehicle The Lone Ranger faltered in 2013, leading to a $150m writedown. Prior to that, the studio reportedly lost $200m on space fantasy John Carter followin g a misfiring marketing campaign for Andrew Stanton’s riff on Edgar Rice Burroug hs’ pulpy Martian adventures. However, Disney is having an excellent year at the box office, with superhero epic The Avengers: Age of Ultron having scored $1.3bn worldwide and fairytale fantasy Cinderella rifling past $500m in April. The studio also has Star Wars adventure The Force Awakens, the bookies’ runaway favourite to be 2015’s highest-grossing film, set to debut in December. Moreover, Inside Out and AntMan will both be expected to perform well when they arrive in cinemas in June and July respectively.

Party for Ashya King and other child cancer survivors in Marbella

A BRITISH boy whose parents became the focus of an international manhunt when they took him out of the country for pioneering treatment for a brain tumour was at a party yesterday (Saturday) in Marbella for children who have beaten cancer. Ashya King, now six and fully recovered despite all predictions, joined 24 other children at a fun event with clowns, balloons, sweets and lots of laughter and happiness at the Costa del Sol hospital which has been overseeing his treatment. The party was organised by the charity Asociación Por Una Sonrisa (‘Association For A Smile’), which helps families through the emotional upheaval involved when they have a child with cancer. Leader Eva Ledesma (pictured left) says the psychological strain is ‘a very important issue’ but one which is ‘frequently neglected’, since the focus is nearly always exclusively on treating and curing the young patient. All 25 children at the party have suffered some type of cancer and have now recovered – in fact, latest figures show that over 80% of kids with cancer are successfully cured and survive, a higher percentage than in adults even though children and teenagers usually suffer more traumatic and prolonged forms of the disease, such as leukaemia and brain tumours. Ashya King’s father Brett (pictured right) and his mother, Naghemeh, who is of Iranian origin, and their

children now live full-time in Marbella so that their youngest can continue his post-recovery treatment and check-ups under the auspices of Dr Hernán Cortés and his team. The little boy was previously being treated at Southampton General Hospital and was unable to move unaided, talk or feed himself, surviving by being fed from a tube in a machine and living his life in a bed or a wheelchair. His brain tumour was inoperable and the paediatric oncology department was only prepared to ‘try a bit of chemotherapy and see if it worked’, or give him whole-brain radiotherapy which would ‘leave him like a vegetable’, said Brett and Naghemeh at the time. They say they were told by the hospital that if they ‘continued to question’ the doctors, it would make Ashya a ward of court and prevent his parents from seeing him. The Kings made the difficult decision to take their son from the hospital and leave the country. Extensive research and planning meant they were able to operate his feeding machine from hotels, and they kept it charged up during the journey via the cigarette lighter socket in their car. Their intention was to take him to Prague, where they knew he could undergo proton beam treatment, a type of laser which targets only the tumour and leaves healthy cells tissue intact, and which is currently the most sophisticated paediatric

oncology medicine technology in existence, although it is not available on the NHS in Britain. But to do this, the Kings needed to sell their holiday villa in Marbella to pay for it. UK prime minister David Cameron and his deputy, Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg, stepped in when Interpol traced the family and arrested Ashya’s parents, keeping them in prison in Madrid whilst their son was alone in the High Care International Hospital in Marbella, 700 kilometres away. Children’s cancer charities helped fund Ashya’s treatment in Prague, meaning the family did not have to sell their villa. The parents said they hoped to prolong their son’s life a little more and give him quality of life and comfort for however long he had left. Less than a year on, Ashya’s ongoing tests have shown no sign of cancer and he is officially in remission – perhaps even completely cured. As well as being cancer-free, Ashya now talks, eats without help, and can walk normally, but will need ongoing rehabilitation treatment until he is as fully fit as any other healthy six-yearold. Brett and Naghemeh say his progress has been ‘slow’ but ‘very rewarding’, and that his overall recovery is beyond their wildest dreams of a year previously Source: thinkspain.com

Floods close major roads in TarragonaFLASH floods

affecting the north of Spain have caused chaos in the province of Tarragona, in southern Catalunya this time with over 270 calls to emergency services made in the early hours of the morning. Nearly two inches of rain, or 43.4 litres per square metre – enough to cause damage to a properly built and maintained home in the eyes of household insurance claims departments – caused roadblocks on main highways throughout the province. The T-721 was closed between La Pobla de Mafumet and Constantí, and the N-340a in Canona and Campclar were shut to traffic. Tarragona city's C/ Pere Martell was flooded in the Serrallo bridge area, rendering it impassible, as was the tunnel leading to a shopping centre between the A-7 motorway and the T-11 in the north-west of the metropolitan area. Lightning caused a fire in an area of bamboo canes next to the Constantí natural gas pump station, leading to a huge conflagration. Luckily, the blaze was some distance from the nearest homes and the only damage was to scrubland and the pump station itself. Emergency services have contacted the gas company and other firms in the same chemical factory industrial estate to ask them to check their installations for possible explosion risk. Until now, Madrid was the worst-hit area with floods leading to motorways being cut off and metro lines grounded, and a 28-yearold home help losing her life when she was dragged into a partition wall by the current after the garage she was working in filled with water, and the panel fell on top of her. But Catalunya has been on flood alert since late last night, although the rain is now beginning to subside. Even further down the east coast, in the Comunidad Valenciana – an area stricken with drought for the last 18 months – thunder and lightning with torrential rain was reported yesterday (Saturday) for several hours. thinkspain.com

5 Reasons Houseplants Are Good for You A potted plant is more than part of the decor. Scientific studies have proven that growing some live-in greenery will ease your stress, improve your state of mind, and purify the air in your home, among other health benefits. By Alexandra Churchill of Martha Stewart Living THEY CAN IMPROVE HEALTH Plants have long been heralded throughout history for their medicinal properties, from ancient apothecaries to European medieval monks who experimented with leafy herbs in the treatment of diseases. But we didn't know until recently that their mere presence can have a healing effect, as was discovered by a team of researchers from Kansas State University. They studied the recovery rates of surgical patients who roomed with indoor plants. These patients registered lower heart rates and blood pressure, requested less pain medication, and were even released from the hospital sooner.

June 2015

Home & Garden

THEY CAN HELP NIP SICKNESS IN THE BUD And growing a plant in your cubicle could mean less sick days. In a workplace study commissioned by the Agricultural University of Norway, researchers investigated the effect of indoor plants on office employees. Among these employees, complaints of coughing, fatigue, hoarse throat, and dry, itchy skin dropped by a third. This can be accredite to an increased humidity in the air, due to transpiration -- a process by which the plant transmits moisture from its roots to the small pores on the underside of its leaves, and releases this vapor into the atmosphere. THEY PURIFY THE AIR Houseplants offer a much-needed breath of fresh air. In the late 1980s, NASA conducted a study to find a way to purify the air in space stations. According to its published report, common household plants proved themselves to

be surprisingly efficient natural filters. Popular species like the peace lily, Chinese evergreen, and red-edged dracaena improved the indoor air quality by removing pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde, and ammonia -- all of which often lurk in the form of plastics, furniture, and carpet fibers. Several studies in the following years have proven this theory. Researchers from the Pennsylvania State University found that the chosen plants for their experiment -- snake plant, spider plant, and golden pothos -- effectively reduced indoor concentrations of ozone produced by ordinary copy machines, laser printers, and ultraviolet lights.

THEY CAN HELP YOU BE MORE PRODUCTIVE If you find your mind wandering when you should be working, a wellplaced plant could help. The calming influence of nature is well documented, and studies have further investigated the mental effects of immersing yourself in some (indoor) nature -and found improvements in concentration, memory, and productivity. In a specific case, Washington State University discovered that people who work within view of houseplants tend to complete tasks 12 percent faster than those without them. THEY CAN MAKE YOU HAPPIER A touch of green can cure a case of the blues. And despite what you may think about having a green thumb, caring for a houseplant engenders positivity. In one study, elderly residents in an assisted-living facility were introduced to indoor gardening. They reported having a much happier mood and better perceived quality of life.

Love Your Outdoor Living Room

Pull up a chair -- or a sofa or bench. Comfortable furniture invites lounging and lingering. This cushion-covered banquette is actually made of plastered concrete, and it helps define the corner of Tim and Susan Anderson's backyard in Los Angeles. (Concrete a little too permanent or imposing? Try low sofas.) Lightweight butterfly chairs are easy to move around as more people join the conversation, and lanterns and throw pillows add punches of color. Tall, sculptural plants such as giant birds-of-paradise and spiky brown cordylines create a wall of sorts, giving the corner an intimate feel. Make It Lush Create a green welcome with simple plant solutions like ficus. Fast-growing vines such as these will quickly cloak walls and soften a rustic wooden gate, which is the entrance to the Andersons’ small front garden. Create a Conversation Pit Don’t scrimp on dimensions in the great outdoors. The extra-wide seat cushions on this banquette allow plenty of room for casual groups, as well as a serving surface for a tray of appetizers. (Since it’s outdoor fabric, spills wipe off easily with water.) Embrace the Bench Declutter a small patio by switching out a cluster of chairs for two modern, comfortable benches upholstered in outdoor fabric. Instead of bringing in bouquets for dinner parties, try a potted plant as a permanent centerpiece Find a Hideaway A shady green part of the garden seems a world away even though it’s really just a few steps from the kitchen and all the hubbub of the backyard play area. Use a colorful low coffee table and sculptural hoop chairs instead of a traditional cafe table and folding chairs to reinforce the feeling of a mod secluded den.

Define Your Palette Develop a distinctive mix of colors and patterns that marries outdoor upholstery, throw pillows, and ceramic tiles to play off what’s happening in the flower beds. Here, pink, orange, and yellow tones really pop, but they’re also grounded by the earthy neutrals of stone tiles and brown-leaved succulents and grasses.

9

Create a Dream Spot Place a comfortable daybed on the patio instead of an ordinary and expected chaise longue. (Here, it's right off the master bedroom, so the toughest weekend decision is whether to nap inside or out.) Striped pillows echo the striated leaves of the potted cordyline flanking the door. An outdoor rug helps define the parameters of the "room" and softens the stone and concrete underfoot. A ceramic stool serves as a handy side table and does double duty as an extra seat when you're entertaining.

R O O D T U O LI V ING

Turn Up the Heat A fire pit is a focal point for a seating area; plus, it extends the outdoor entertaining season beyond the warmth of summer. This model has a gas hookup that can be easily switched on with a key (hidden from the kids), but a wood fire in a concrete vessel also works. Focus on the Foliage Emphasize rich brown, gray, and silver leaves rather than flowers, which can come and go quickly in the garden. Informal flower beds can be anchored with a larger sculptural plant such as this blue agave, and a grouping of other colorful drought-tolerant succulents. Source: http://www. marthastewart.com/

PM rules out early elections

Despite rumors to the contrary, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will not be bringing forward this year’s general election, which is expected to be held in November. Instead, the Popular Party (PP) leader said on Wednesday that he wanted to make the most of what is left of this political term. “There is still time to do things,” he said at a Brussels summit bringing together European Union, Latin American and Caribbean countries. “The measures we adopted are starting to yield fruit; we are at a recovery point that we need to take advantage of.” I am the first one to be aware of it: there are things we need to do better” But Rajoy also unveiled plans for

upcoming changes in his government team and within the conservative party itself. “Before this month is out, I will have to make some decisions,” he said, without providing any specifics. The goal of the government reshuffle will be to “make the most of the possibilities of economic recovery and job creation.” As for the party changes, Rajoy openly admitted that “there are things we need to rectify, and I am the first one to be aware of it: there are things we need to do better.” His statement comes shortly after municipal and regional elections in which the PP lost most of its absolute majorities and is set to yield even more power in places where it managed very narrow victories. In Madrid, for instance, the PP is expected to FORTHCOMING SOCIAL EVENTS IN 2015 ROQUETAS DE MAR SUB-BRANCH 3569 be kept out of City Hall Tuesday 7th July – RBL SUMMER POPPY BBQ at Angela’s. The Ultimate Guide to Essential Oils Essential oils can be used in so many ways—from adding a drop to your favorite fragrance-free lotion or dabbing a little on your pulse points instead perfume. The best part? Choose your scent (or blend a few!) based on your mood to customize your fragrance every time. Here’s how. DivineCaroline.com

Odds are you’ve experienced essential oils, when you’ve walked into a spa and breathed in the lavender or orange blossom that greets you at the front door or when you cracked open that reed diffuser your mom gave you for your birthday. But there’s also a good chance that you haven’t experimented with essential oils on your own. After all, there are seemingly endless options—and no guidance on the best way to incorporate them into your beauty routine. Nick James, a botanist and the co-founder of Body Bliss—a company that sources high-quality essential oils—says it doesn’t have to be complicated. “You can achieve amazing results with essential oils and aromatherapy, whether it’s an outlook on life that needs to be adjusted or a pain that needs to be relieved,” James says. “The catch is knowing the right oil for the job and choosing a good quality oil.”

bergamot, lemon, chamomile, rose, tangerine, or ylang-ylang. When you’re tired, reach for cardamom, cinnamon, clove basil, eucalyptus, fennel, lemon, peppermint, or sage. When you’re feeling stressed, reach for lavender, bergamot, cedarwood, frankincense, myrrh, orange, peach, neroli, or rose geranium. When you’re needing a shot of confidence, reach for jasmine, patchouli, sandalwood, or frankincense. When you want to get in the mood, reach for jasmine, vanilla, ylang-ylang, or sandalwood.

30 Daily Lenses FOR ONLY

To help you master the essential oils aisle, we asked James for his ultimate tips on choosing and using oils. Follow his advice and get ready for some pretty powerful results.

18.90€

1. Add them to a bath. For a therapeutic effect, James recommends adding the oil into a bath. However, you can’t just drop the oil into the water; you’ll need a carrier that will spread it throughout the water. James’ simple trick: Mix a few drops of your essential oils into a tablespoon of heavy whipping cream and add that to the bath water. It’ll help distribute the oils evenly in the water. 2. No time for a bath? Add them to an unscented oil or lotion. Unscented body oil is actually the best vehicle for carrying the benefits of the essential oils into your skin, but an unscented body lotion will also work.

5. Know which scents help which ailments. While a number of different options can help with a wide variety of issues, there are certain scents that help with specific issues. Here are some of the common times when an aromatherapeutic pick-me-up can help, and what to reach for: When you’re feeling down or angry, reach for jasmine,

4. Trust your nose. James says you can tell after just a few sniffs what’s good and what’s not. “True essential oils are full of aromatic essences,” James says. “Take lavender as an example. You’ll want to look for one that has a soft and sweet smell—not something that smells synthetic.”

3. Find a company you trust. The essential oils James sources and sells at Body Bliss are high-grade, therapeutic oils. After all, James is a botanist; he studies plants for a living and knows which plants—grown in which climates, countries, and altitudes—will work best. A handful of other companies also stocks this level of products. So, do your homework before you buy. ROYAL SCANDAL

A new royal controversy has erupted over Cristina de Borbón, King Felipe VI’s younger sister, who will soon stand trial for tax fraud in connection with the so-called Nóos case. Spain’s Official Gazette, published in the early hours of Friday morning, states that the monarch has stripped his sister of the title of Duchess of Palma, which she held since 1997 when she married the former Olympic handball player Iñaki Urdangarin. But the princess’s lawyer, Miquel Roca I Junyent, claimed just a few hours later that it was Cristina de Borbón who had renounced the nobility title in a letter written in June. Her husband, once an admired figure within the royal family, has since become a major suspect in an embezzlement case involving no-bid contracts Sources at the Royal Palace cast doubt on this version of events. “The renunciation letter arrived by fax yesterday, after the king informed Cristina of his decision to take away her title,” said a source. Urdangarin, once an admired figure within the royal family, has since become a major suspect in an embezzlement case involving no-bid contracts

A VERY EXPENSIVE everything goes to the two of MISTAKE: you with the right to accrue

Question. My brother and myself recently inherited a villa in Fuengirola worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keep the property and I would compensate him. With this as the background agreement we assisted the notary and we both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the housem half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The solicitor is now saying that the tax office is claiming that in respect to my half two taxable transactions have taken place: they tax the inheritance of half by me and then tax a donation to my brother. Is this correct? A. You have made a very expensive mistake. What the tax office is claiming is correct, as in Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed then the tax office taxes the transaction twice (inheritance+donation). The best solution depending on the way the will was worded would have been: A. If the will states that

the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional ) in which case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him, which would have made it a donation) who would have inherited the complete property directly from your father. B. If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work , but in this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership which is much cheaper than a donation. The only angle to your situation now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary claiming that you made a mistake. (It will be difficult but as there is a lot of money involved worth a try).

awarded to his Nóos Institute by the regional governments of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. His wife Cristina – known as the ‘infanta’ – found herself embroiled in the case through her joint ownership of a company that allegedly served to receive the ill-gotten funds. She also allegedly used company credit cards to make personal purchases, then claimed tax deductions. For the more than three years since she became a target of the court investigation, Cristina has refused to give up her succession rights to the throne For more than three years, since before she became a formal target of the court investigation, Cristina has refused to give up her succession rights to the throne, even if these are more theoretical than real. Her father Juan Carlos, then her brother Felipe – who accessed the throne a year ago – have been asking her to take this symbolic step as a way to improve the royal family’s image. Juan Carlos himself stepped down at a time of unprecedented low popularity for the institution marked by street protests by supporters of turning Spain into a republic. Sources from the royal household claim “the decision to renounce the rights of dynastic succession continue to be in the hands” of the

infanta. King Felipe reportedly telephoned Cristina to inform her of his royal decree stripping her of her noble title, ahead of its publication in the Official Gazette. The case has been surrounded by controversy, and led to a public falling out between Judge Castro and his anti-corruption attorney On February 8, 2014, Cristina de Borbón became the first member of Spain’s royal family to testify in court as a target of a criminal investigation. Palma de Mallorca Judge José Castro asked the princess around 400 questions during her more than sixhour appearance in his courtroom, to which she answered “I don’t know” 182 times. The case against the Spanish Infanta has itself been surrounded by controversy, and led to a public falling out between Judge Castro and his anticorruption attorney Pedro Horrach. The latter has held that there is no hard evidence to put Cristina de Borbón on trial, and suggested that she is being persecuted for who she is, rather than for what she has done. The judge, on the other hand, claims that putting the princess on the stand proves that everybody is equal before the law, regardless of their royal background. elpais.com

PROTECTING YOUR FURNITURE ETC IN TH E HOT MONTHS. The hot summer months are well on the way now and the Spanish Sun is unrelenting from dawn to dusk. Some people escape it by popping off to good old Blighty for a few months and the ones left behind entertain family and friends or just enjoy the summer. Why don’t we do as the Spanish do in the summer, after all they have the handle on the summer here as they were born and bred in Spain and have the experience of the hot months. The one thing I do myself is keep my shutters shut during the morning at the back of my house as the sun rises there. Helps keep my casa cooler for the day and do not open again until after 2.00 p.m. Then I will close the shutters on the front of my casa as the sun is pouring in there after 2.00 p.m. Then when the evening breeze gets up in the evening I open up the shutters to air the casa. Not only does this help keep my casa cooler for sleeping in the night it also protects my furniture from the strong rays of sunshine. Using your shutters in this way saves your wooden furniture drying out and fading, including any of your upholstery and other fabrics such as curtains etc. I am not saying live like a pit pony in the dark, just leave a little gap to allow light in to see where you are going and leave internal doors open for light as well. Another tip if you are out for part

of the day or the whole day close all your shutters and for those with Air Conditioning you will see a difference in your electric bills. The hardest part of this is training your family and friends to follow your lead in keeping your home cool and furniture protected. Good luck with that one – some battles I have won and others I just threw in the towel, it was easier. The Spanish also like their trees near their properties as this gives shade to their homes and something to sit under in their rocking chairs so they can watch the world go by or have a good gossip. Keep your mattresses well aired and wash your mattress and pillow protectors often during the hot months. This helps keep everything smelling a lot sweeter and fresher and good for mattress condition. If you have rooms you rarely use do keep them well aired too, this does help with the humidity problem here in a lot of homes. Also, it is good if you can to pull furniture away a bit from the walls in these rooms and get a bit of an air flow going. It has been known to help with damp patches. Holiday Home Market Picking Up in Coastal Areas

Spain, HousingThe holiday housing market continues to be affected by the adjustment of prices and the absence of new developer activity in the greater part of the Spanish coastal areas. However, according to a report prepared by the real estate appraisal company, Tinsa, entitled “Vivienda en Costa 2015”, in many of these coastal areas the price adjustment is moderating gradually, and there are even a few areas where there are real signs of recovery with regard to prices and the return of construction activity. The report reveals that the areas where signs of recovery are more evident are Malaga (Marbella and Benahavís) and the Balearic Islands (Palma de Mallorca, Andratx, Calvià and Ibiza). Moreover, there are many more areas that seem to have reached a point of inflexion with respect to the period of adjustment. Among them are Torrevieja, Orihuela and Pilar de Horadada, in Alicante; Sotogrande, Conil, Chiclana and Puerto de Santa Maria, in Cadiz; Nerja, Estepona, Casares and Manilva, in Malaga, and the town of San Juan de los Terreros in Almería. The Canary Islands have also shown signs of recovery, as well as south of Maresme (Barcelona) and the south of Tarragona. Among the towns analysed, the report lists Sitges (Barcelona) as the destination with the highest price, at 2,694 €/m2, followed by Calvià, Andratx and Alcudia, all three in the Balearic Islands. In contrast, the most economical location is

the Castellón town of Almazora (804 €/ m2), which has ousted Puerto Lumbreras (823 €/m2) as the cheapest of the coastal municipalities analysed in the report.

Inmobiliaria Estate Agent

Since the onset of the crisis eight years ago, some of the most significant price declines have been recorded in Casares (Málaga), where the average price has dropped by 61.5% since the maximum values of 2007, and Ayamonte (Huelva), Mataró (Barcelona) and Canet d’En Berenguer (Valencia), with declines ranging between 60% and 61%.

GIPE nr. 3510

According to data from the Ministry of Public Works, the five coastal towns (excluding capitals) which registered the greatest number of housing transactions in 2014 were Torrevieja, with 4,136 purchases (3.8% year-on-year), Marbella (3,997, 28.7%), Orihuela (3,527, 20.2%), Mijas (2,384, 14.7%) and Estepona (2,113, 26.6%). The towns with more than 200 transactions annually which increased their number of sales most, percentagewise, in 2014 were Mojácar (Almería), Arucas (Gran Canaria), Torremolinos (Málaga) and Almazora (Castellón), with increases of 105%, 83%, 71% and 70%, respectively. The Ministry’s data also reveals that the greatest increases in transactions on new dwellings, excluding the coastal capitals, were registered in Manilva (193%), Marbella (101%), Orihuela (93%) and Calafell (66%). source: keyero

El Economista reported that, in 2014, the total amount that drivers had to pay to the DGT in penalties reached 129,604,621.70 euros, which represented an increase of 4.31% over 2013 when the amount totalled 124,244,714.40 euros, and 7.27% more than the 120,817,424.31 paid in fines in 2012.

Spanish government expands “golden visas” for property purchasers scheme

Non-EU nationals investing 500,000 euros in Spanish property can bring their families to live in Spain In a continuation of their efforts to attract foreign buyers to the property market, the Spanish government has announced that it intends to widen the residency-for-purchases scheme which it set up in late 2013, allowing [Image: Spanish government expands “golden visas” for property purchasers scheme] all those investing over 500,000 euros in Spanish property to qualify automatically for residency permits in this country.

but also to work here. The issuing of these permits was designed to attract Russian and Chinese investors to Spain – those within the EU already have relatively easy access to residence permits – and it is likely that the widening of the terms will attract more of these potential property purchasers.

This scheme is also available for those investing two million euros in public debt or one million in Spanish businesses. It was slow to take off, with only 72 non-EU nationals taking advantage in the first six months, but over the next six months a further 248 received residence permits in this way. In the light of the increased interest, the terms are now to be widened to include not only investors but also the children and parents of those who wish to move to Spain: this courtesy has hitherto been extended only to spouses and children aged under 18. Non-married partners and adult children are now to be included on certain conditions. In addition, the intention now is for an investment of a million euros or a property purchase of half a million euros in Spain to entitle the person concerned not only to live in this country

Another aim of the 30-odd modifications to the existing law concerning the issue of residency permits to non-EU nationals is to bring Spain into line with the EU Directive regarding conditions of entry for those who are transferred to this country by their employers. spanishpropertyneews

This is an update on the progress of Immo-Carlos since the opening of our new office on 2nd February 2015 (La Plaza Nueva, numero 10, Albox). We have seen an increase in both leads and new properties. I (Carlos) have been focusing on the Belgium market for some time now and this has been a good steady flow, allowing me to ride through the crisis. However, now that we have grown (with our new office and English salesman, Gavin) we are finding ourselves just as busy with the British market. This is partly due to the pound bouncing back, but also it is down to our combined experience of 16 years here in Spain, our attention to detail and professional attitude. My new salesman, Gavin and Myself have known each other since I arrived here in Spain some 8 years ago and we are in fact best friends. We have planned and chatted about this for a long time and it is wonderful when things come together as you visualize them. This gives a fantastic atmosphere in the office, which comes across to both buyers and sellers alike. We are very pleased with the results from our new office so far and would like to invite you all to pop in and meet us!! So if you are looking to purchase a property in Spain or to sell here? Pop in and find out what we can do for you… If you want to get the right price for you home or you are still trying to find your dream home? Just look us up and you won’t be disappointed!!

Spanish property market still on a roller coaster

The roller coaster nature of the Spanish property market recovery is laid bare with the latest data on prices showing that the slowdown has not yet gone, nor has the difference between official figures and those from real estate firms. The latest figures from valuations company Tinsa show that at a national level property prices are still falling although there are regions where they are rising while the latest data from the Housing Department show prices falling slightly. The Tinsa data for May, based on the company’s own valuations, shows that average national house prices were down 3.6% year on year but this global figure hides considerable regional variations. For example the biggest price falls are in provincial capitals and large cities with a decline of 4.9%, while house prices on the Mediterranean coast were down 2.3% and in the Balearics and Canaries there was a fall of 2.1%. However, year on year house prices on the coast are up 1.4% compared to May 2014 but are still down 48.8% compared to the peak of the market and according to Tinsa the national average peak to present fall is 42.1%. According to the government figures the average price for Spanish property fell a 0.11% in the first three months of this year, the smallest quarterly decline since the economic crisis began and down from a fall of 0.36%

O

22

in the last quarter of 2014. This takes the average property price to €1,458 per square meter and this is down 36.3%, adjusting for inflation, since the peak of the market in 2008 when it was €2,100 per square metre. A regional breakdown of the figures shows that seven autonomous regions registered year on year price growth led by the Canaries up by 3.56%, Aragon up 1.9%, Madrid up 1.67%, the Valencian Community up 0.69%, Extremadura up 0.57%, the Balearics up 0.1% and Andalusia up 0.05%. The rest of Spain is still seeing annual price decreases. In Asturias prices have fallen by 6.53 year on year, by 3.72% in Castilla-León, by 3.15% in Navarra, by 2.29% in Galicia, and by 1.47% in the Basque Country. According to the Housing Price Index (HPI) published by the National Statistics Institute, the price of homes rose by 1.5% in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period of 2014, which is below the 1.8% price increase recorded at the end of 2014. But the index has recorded four consecutive quarters of year on year increases following six years of declines. The index also shows that prices for new homes are rising faster than others. Second hand homes say a rise of 1.1% in the first quarter of the year while new home prices rose by 4%. Source: http://www.propertywire. com/

Granada

Granada is music and poetry, monuments which are pure art, and ancient culture. This province reaches towards the skies from the craggy summits of the Sierra Nevada mountains; cities with breathtaking architecture which reside serenely in the Altiplano region; white villages scattered across hills and valleys which slope down to the cliffs and beaches of the Costa Tropical. The province of Granada, tourist destination par excellence, offers travellers the chance to ski in the Sierra Nevada mountains, discover hidden villages in the Alpujarra region, explore the last frontier of the AlAndalus empire in eastern Granada or stay in caves and experience a troglodyte’s lifestyle. A land of mild warm summers and winters

which are ideal for snow sports. Location On the banks of the Mediterranean Sea and in the heart of the Penibética mountain range. The capital is the city of Granada. It borders the provinces of Málaga and Cordoba in the west, Jaén in the north, Almería in the east and it is open to the Mediterranean in the south. History The whole province is full of incentives for those who love architecture and culture. The district of Santa Fe was where the discovery of America was planned by Christopher Columbus, and Fuente Vaqueros is the birthplace of Federico García Lorca, one of the most important poets and playwrights to grace Spanish literature. The remains of a hominid dating between one and two million years old were discovered in the Altiplano region of Granada. The Bastetani, an Iberian people, bequeathed to posterity a relic of great historic and cultural value: the Lady of Baza. Some coins struck by the Turduli people towards the 5th century bear witness to the origin of the capital of this lovely province. In the 8th century, the Berbers conquered these lands which reached their apogee with the Nasrids, who brought an economic, social, artistic and cultural development whose influence can still be seen today. Landscape The province of Granada is characterised by a descending series of raised plains which

start at the high summits and go right down to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. These plains and the height of the terrain mean that the climate in winter is extremely cold. This greatly affects the vegetation, agriculture, cattle farming and game animals. Three clearly distinct zones can be seen in Granada: the coast, the river plain in Granada, and the mountain area. Each one has its own climate, geography, history and location which set it apart from the others.

bread from Alfacar. In Riofrío, they make the only quality Beluga caviar in Spain, and on the Costa Tropical you are guaranteed good fish and shellfish.

Gastronomy This has a marked Arab influence and is based on excellent ingredients. It features traditional dishes such as tender broad beans with ham, cardoons, the typical remojón (salad with cod and orange) and gazpacho. All accompanied by the delicious

Oh to be a cat in Alqueria!

Animals in Alqueria are well fed, well cared for and contented. They don’t get involved in the civil unrest caused by barrio rivalry, they have no enemies, there is no food chain. This applies to the four legged varieties and those with the power of flight. The power of flight is a commodity much sought after by the human population of Alqueria. This is due to the regular arrival of men in cars with blue lights from across the border. But it is the animals we are interested in. Tiberia is the Village cat. Not just an ordinary cat but a very intelligent and motivated cat. She doesn’t belong to anyone, people belong to her. She lives where she wants and owing to her ability to unlock doors, can leave just when she wants. Other cats pay her homage and respect whatever territory she chooses to claim. Her ‘sidekick’ is a part Siamese, part European cat and if she were human would be the archetype blonde bimbo. Unlike the astute Tiberia she is rather slow and timid. Roaming the village is a fat cheeked Iberian Pig which hungrily eats the windfalls from the Holm Oak and gets visibly fatter by the hour. His only concern is his greed. The Villagers intend to name him after a suitable Tory politician, unfortunately they are spoilt for choice. Pound for pound this acorn fed porker is the most valuable asset in Alqueria after the Remitroot crop of course. The Alquerian Hunting Dog is the only true canine aborigine in the Village. Bred

to hunt t h e Alquerian B a c k Fanged N e w t w h i c h is now extinct, not because of over hunting but because the Newts seemed to prefer it that way. The Hunting Dogs now roam the village, unemployed due to the lack of newts. They have placards around their necks. ‘Five children to support. Destitute. Hungry. Please give generously’. The people of Alqueria sympathise with destitute, they themselves are only a Remitroot crop away for the same condition and give generously. These dogs now live in considerable comfort and wonder why they ever hunted newts in the first place. Perhaps the happiest and most contented animal in the Village is Lorenzo, Manuela’s beaver. Fed Remitroot leaves twice daily, which although none addictive are strangely hallucinogenic, the animal thrives. Manuela, while petting this creature will often squeeze it to her ample breast, cradling it in her considerable cleavage. Lorenzo has made it into the ‘Guinness Book of Records’ for being the only beaver ever recorded to grin from ear to ear. If Sartre was right and ‘hell is other people’ then the animals of Alqueria are in heaven.

The Cat That Used To Be Somebody Else’s, Sayyida Al Hurra, likes to perch her Imperial Posterior on the windowsill outside our bedroom, so that she knows the exact second that I wake, and can shimmy round to the kitchen for her breakfast. But now the summer has arrived the bedroom window stays open overnight, covered by the mozzi net. As far as Sayyida was concerned, this was not a problem – she simply jumped up on the windowsill, delicately and with refinement picked the net out of the way with her claws, and came inside. Our bedroom is out of bounds for all animals, especially pre-dawn cats, so I implemented Plan A: Attach strong netting to the rejas on the outside, so that the windowsill was covered, thus she would not be able to jump onto it. I rooted out some netting, measured the rejas, got a long-handled brush, a felt-tip pen and some scissors, and drew a line on the netting where I would have to cut it. (I needed the long-handled brush as a ruler to ensure that I drew a reasonably straight line) Then Pete chipped in with ‘Why don’t you get some plastic saucers, like the ones that go under planters, put some water in them and put them on the windowsill. She’ll soon stop jumping up if she finds she gets wet feet.’ I stared at him, open-mouthed with admiration. What genius! Why hadn’t I thought of that? I tidied away the netting, the long-handled brush, the felt-tip pen and the scissors, fetched the tape measure, got into Henry the

FIRST NATIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE CONFERENCE IN MURCIA

The PAES National Animal Welfare Conference is being held at the Costa Narejos Hotel, Los Alcázares, Murcia 16-18 October 2015 and is believed to be the first of its kind in Spain. Three animal welfare organisations from Murcia and Almeria: ACTIN, San Animal and Cruz Azul, are collaborating on the PAES (Protección Animales España) Project which is creating great initiatives and programmes, including the National Animal Welfare Conference. The conference is aimed at those who would like to learn more about running their own Trap, Neuter and Return campaigns; volunteers involved in shelters, sanctuaries, rescue groups and foster pet parents, as well as anyone who loves animals and wants to get involved. Delegates will be able to learn about the lifesaving changes taking place across the country and the organisers are confident that they will take those ideas back to pets in shelters, and with rescue groups, in their home towns. “Our mission is to bring together as many people as we can who are involved in animal welfare in Spain, to encourage co-operation and exchange of ideas” said Lyn Baines, Conference Manager. “We will be launching the PAES Project at the conference and we have some exceptional speakers on various topics.” The best-of-the-best experts converge at the PAES National Animal Welfare Conference to share their ideas and expertise: leaders of the no-kill movement, experts in animal care and behaviour, marketing and fundraising experts, professionals from private and public animal

welfare organisations, and more. Topics will include: Animal Welfare Law European Microchip Database Compassion Fatigue & Compassion for Rescuers Knowing Your Boundaries & Keeping Safe Education in Schools and/or Canine Assisted Therapy Animal Behaviour Galgos & Podencos in Spain Animal Fellows & Zooplus World Veterinary Service & Trap, Neuter, Return TNR of Cats – The Spanish Experience Creating & Managing Cat Colonies Communicating Your Cause/Marketing & PR Tips “We have speakers from all over Europe who will share their expertise and experiences with our delegates” commented Lyn. “We know how hard it is running an animal welfare charity, so we have kept the registration donations as low as possible, so that we can engage as many people as possible.” You can find out more about the conference itinerary and how to register by visiting their website: www.proteccionanimales.es or by emailing conf@proteccionanimales.es PAES (Protección Animales España) is a project that has been developed by the ACTIN Association (Charity Number G30866925) with the aim of bringing together associations, protectoras, animalistas, government, authorities and professionals or companies interested in animal welfare so that, by working together, we

The cheap plastic saucers were too wide, so after careful measuring I had to settle for pricier ceramic planters. Nevertheless, it was still better than my own less-than-certain solution, I thought. ‘Will they fit?’ queried Pete. ‘Yes, I measured them.’ I answered smugly, and just to prove it I slid them onto the windowsill, were they sat, a perfect fit. ‘Are they planters or saucers?’ He asked. ‘Planters. Why?’ ‘Because planters have a hole in the bottom to let the water drain out. Saucers don’t.’ Ah! I had noticed that they had holes in the bottom, but never for one instant did it occur to me that this meant that the water would run straight through them! Next week I’ll tell you about Plan C.

can make a real difference in improving the welfare and treatment of animals in

Spain. Our aim is to provide a Legal Group, Veterinarian Group and, eventually, our own Rescue Centre, to co-ordinate fostering with the various local rescue charities. This will enable us to monitor dogs and pass them as fit, before they are released to foster homes and, eventually, their forever homes.

Apricot Basics

Full of fragrance and sweet, golden-orange apricots are another summer season delicacies of Asian origin. These much-prized fruits were first brought to the Europe by Greeks, who named them as “golden eggs of the sun.” Botanically, the fruit is closely related to peaches and nectarine; sharing with them in the broader Rosaceae family of fruit-trees in the genus; Prunus. Scientific name: Prunus armenia. Today, some of the chief producing regions of this fruit are Turkey, Iran, Italy,

June- 2015

France, Spain, Syria, Greece, and China. Apricot is a medium sized deciduous tree that grows best in well-drained mountainous slope soils. During the spring, it bears plenty of beautiful pinkish-white flowers that attract bees. The fruits have almost uniform size, 4-5 cm in diameter, and weigh about 35 g. In structure; the fruit is a drupe, consisting of a centrally located single pit surrounded by crunchy, aromatic edible flesh. The seed is enclosed in a hard stony shell, often called as “stone.” Fresh, ripe apricots have a sweet flavor similar to plums. Sun dried organic apricots fruits are nutritiously denser than fresh ones, although they have less in vitamin-C content. Its seed-kernel is also edible and taste like that

of almonds. Oil extracted from these kernels has been used in cooking. Health benefits of apricots Fresh fruits are low in calories, composing just 50 calories per 100 g weight. Nonetheless, they are rich source of dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The fruits are enriched with numerous health promoting phyto-chemicals; that helps prevent heart disease, reduce LDL, (“bad cholesterol”) levels and offer protection against cancers. Apricots are excellent sources of vitamin-A, and carotenes. 100 g fresh fruits carry 1926 IU or 64% of daily-required levels of vitamin A. Both of these compounds are known to have antioxidant properties and are essential for vision. Vitamin-A is also required for maintaining healthy mucusa and skin. Consumption of natural fruits rich in carotenes helps protect the body from lung and oral cavity cancers. Fresh fruits contain vitamin-C, another natural antioxidant. Vitamin-C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful oxygen-free radicals. They are an also good source of minerals such as potassium, iron, zinc, calcium and manganese. Potassium is a heart-healthy mineral; an important component of cell and body fluids that help regulate heart rate and blood pressure. The total anti-oxidant or ORAC value of raw apricots is 1115 umol TE/100 g. Much of this in these fruits comes from some important health promoting flavonoid poly phenolic anti-oxidants such as lutein, zea xanthin and beta cryptoxanthin. Altogether, these compounds act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging, cancers and various disease process. Further, zea-xanthin, a carotenoid selectively absorbed into the retinal “macula lutea” in the eyes where it is thought to provide anti-oxidant and protective lightfiltering functions. Thus, consumption of fruits like apricots rich in zea-xanthin helps eyes protect from age-related macular disease (AMRD), especially in the elderly people.

roquetas de mar community news Excursions from Roquetas

There are some delightful natural areas just a short drive from Roquetas. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park is less than one hour's drive from Roquetas. The cape itself is visible across the bay and beyond that there are the unspoilt beaches and unique wildlife of the protected coastal reserve. It is also only an hour's drive to the Alpujarras that delightful area of picturesque white villages that cling to the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. It is but half an hour's journey if one accepts that the mountain village of Enix is, in fact, part of that delightful region made famous by writers Gerald Brenan and Chris Stewart. Certainly, on arriving at the village in the Sierra de Gádor there is a sign welcoming visitors to the Alpujarra Almeriense. As far as I am concerned it is just one of the delightful mountain villages to visit whenever I wish to go for a short drive from the coastal resort of Roquetas de Mar which, incidentally has over 300 sunny days per year. No wonder the welcoming signs in Roquetas say "Roquetas de Mar también en invierno" also in winter! Record Turnout for the FTG

Friday 15th May 2015 saw a record turnout for the Friday Tapas Group in Roquetas De Mar. A total of 24 turned up for the weekly gathering, which included a few holidaymakers, who joined the regulars at Chaplin’s International Sports Bar in the Urb. Many past residents, family of residents and holidaymakers often drop-in and join the regulars, when they visit the area. This coming August, the group will celebrate their 500th meeting since the FTG started all those years ago. It is hoped to do something special to mark the occasion, so watch this space!

COMPANIONSHIP You already know how good a friend your dog can be. What you might not have noticed is how much more you talk to other people when you’re out with your dog. You’re simply more likely to interact with other humans when your dog is with you than when you are out for a walk by yourself. EXERCISE Having a dog also increases the chances you’ll go for walks and play in the park. It’s harder to skip your morning run when your exercise partner is bouncing excitedly at the door with his leash in his mouth. How can you tell him you want to skip walkies today? Evidence is starting to show that children with dogs have a

isn’t so surprising after all. NURTURING You might have noticed that families are smaller these days. Most people feel a need to nurture that used to be fulfilled by raising a baby or helping to take care of smaller siblings. For people without children and children in small families dogs are increasingly fulfilling the role of substitute child or sibling. The dog gives them someone to care for and nurture with all the positive physical and mental benefits that come with doing so. EMPATHY Perhaps the practice in nurturing is the reason behind the observation that kids with dogs tend to be more empathetic than other kids, all else being equal. They also tend to be more popular with their schoolmates and have healthy selfesteem. These are all good things for a child’s emotional and social development, whatever the connection with their canine friend might be. SOCIAL CAPITAL Dog-owners tend to interact with other dog-owners in their neighbourhoods. This is true of most groups of people brought together by a common interest, but dog-owners might well meet up several times a day, by chance or design,

during walks and playtime at the park. This frequent interaction strengthens the entire community. READING Some children read to their dogs. These kids often have higher reading levels than those children who don’t. It’s great for the child and the dog: the dog gets attention and the child gets reading practice. Playing “teacher” with a canine pupil is fun, anyway. MEDICAL BENEFITS Some researchers have noticed that pet-owners tend to have shorter stays in the hospital, fewer visits to the doctor’s office, and lower levels of stress overall. Having a pet might also lower your risk of heart disease, by possibly as much as 4%. If this turns out to be true over the long term, that would be a benefit similar to going on a low-salt diet. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Many of the studies looking into the benefits of pet ownership took into account differences of wealth and social standing. As a result, the benefits of dog ownership are believed to be connected to the pet directly, and not just linked to having the money and leisure to be able to afford a dog. It’s good to know that having a dog is good for you. However, it is not a wise plan to purchase a pet with only these benefits in mind. Remember that the pooch is a living creature with its own physical and emotional needs. https://www.lovethatpet.com

Book Review

The Assassin’s Mark David Ebsworth (pen name)

“The dead are sacred. Impartial. Unbiased. So Franco runs his tours on the strength of them. And just being able to run them shows that the Nationalists are legitimate. Winning.” It’s hard to imagine going on a tour of northern Spain during the Spanish civil war in 1938 and being guaranteed a safe passage? Was that possible when the war was still raging? On the one hand there was plenty of evidence of the abject poverty and devastation although the tourists generally had lavish accommodation, experiencing the wonderful Spanish cuisine whilst others starved. Living in this luxury inoculates us from the horrors of it all. The tours had been organised by Franco and boasted of witnessing atrocities in defeating and annihilating the Reds. A one-sided lesson. It’s even harder to imagine being taken hostage and used as a pawn in a deadly political game. Seeing history in the making or being a part of that history where your life is endangered. This is what makes this book riveting from beginning to end. It is deemed a crazy assignment for Jack Telford, a socialist reporter, 30 years of age, working for Reynold’s News, down to earth, sensitive and determined to discover the real truth not Franco’s propaganda. He is an interesting character, extremely credible but haunted by his father’s suicide. His father’s ghostly presence and his taunting of Jack’s pacifistic views eventually drive him over the edge. It’s unusual for battlefield tours to be organised while the war’s still being fought.” But it did happen. Jack’s companions, on first sight appear to be fascists with affiliations towards Franco and Hitler but all is not what it seems. This is what I liked about the story. The reader discovers the truth at the same time as Jack and usually it is too late to do anything about it. Trust no-one. Betrayal is the key word: Not everybody on this little adventure is exactly what they seem. An enigma but who is able to unravel it? His editor Sydney Elliott wants the real story not propaganda and Jack decides to write about the

common man-the people’s revolution not about Franco. You never saw such a gap between rich and poor. Ordinary people fighting a feudal aristocracy and a feudal church. The itinerary covered towns such as San Sebastian, Durango, Bilbao, Santander, Gijon, Ovieda and Guernica. At the start of the tour Jack is disturbed by the inexplicable and gruesome death of one of the tourists which has a profound effect on him and he imagines a hooded figure holding out the poisoned apple towards him. Suspense builds up with the revelation that a man half hidden in the shadows appears to be watching the group closely and following their every move. The suspense is chilling and the first major climax happens at the Cueva de la Santina in Covadonga, a religious shrine where the dwindling group are held hostage by the Machados and treated like bargaining chips or hostages of war by the Vice Consul in San Sebastian, Fielding. Tourists under threat. The panic and fear feels real beyond words. Ironically, Jack’s article emerges from this terrifying experience as he surprisingly gains the trust and friendship of the Machados with his Esperanto, learning the full extent of their hardships and brutal losses, their persecutions. It’s a painful story but a necessary one to tell. There are hints of assassinations shrouded in mystery until the end. The guide, Murphy was tied to the rails, arms spread-eagled, crucified in a sitting position against the railings with his fascist uniform removed by the Machados. He was a sitting target, a sacrificial lamb. A human barricade. What a startlingly shocking and pessimistic outlook for Jack and companions. The brutal conclusion was that in war there was simply one truth: You identified your mortal enemies, those who would

KILL you without hesitation, and you killed them first? Simple survival ethics-KILL OR BE KILLED. With this realisation Jack’s world became an empty void. Terror, bedlam and hysteria dominate this climax which is frighteningly credible.

More martyrs dying for a cause, a touch of romance and rivalry between a Reuters journalist, Carter-Holt based on Kim Philby’s early espionage career that Jack is paradoxically attracted to and repelled by. The final climax culminates in a visit to Santiago to meet Franco in person and a mad cap plan involving an Agfa camera that is foiled. Is this the attempted assassination? The Assassin’s Mark? At the end, Jack’s life becomes meaningless and his soul becomes shattered and destroyed. He is driven on by his demons to fight instead of remaining the pacifist coward sitting on the fence. He had been gullible and drawn into a web so he put into practice his maxim of: kill or be killed. His article was published and he successfully managed to expose the lies being perpetrated by Franco’s propaganda team in relation to the legitimate Republic Government. We live like animals. We have lived like this for five hundred years. The story is moving, realistic and frighteningly accurate. This was the ultimate sacrifice and you’ll have to read it to understand what I mean! Road test: Renault Kadjar 4x4 diesel Does the Renault Kadjar crossover make more or less sense with 4x4 underpinnings and a modicum of off-road ability? The Renault Kadjar is a great family
car for those who are looking for something a little more interesting than a normal hatchback. We think
that it could well be the best crossover available right now, and although the 1.6-litre diesel all-wheel-drive model won’t be the biggest seller, it does provide added depth to the range with specific appeal to those who plan to tow
or even venture off-road. The Renault Kadjar is the company’s answer to the Nissan Qashqai, with which it shares many of its parts. And just like its sister car, the Kadjar is available with allwheel drive for those after a cool-looking motor with decent towing capability and a modicum of off-road ability. We’ve already tested the 1.2-litre petrol Kadjar in Issue 1,374, and were mightily impressed. On the whole the crossover is comfortable, very practical, drives well and looks stylish. It’s relaxing to travel in, too, bar a bit of wind whistle from the A-pillars, slight engine noise under acceleration and a little tyre roar on rough surfaces – which is less noticeable on the smaller 17-inch alloys of the lower-spec Dynamic Nav tested here. This all-wheel-drive model also features the range-topping 128bhp 1.6-litre diesel. It provides substantially more pulling power than the petrol, making it a better choice for high-mileage drivers, with 320Nm of torque available from only 1,750rpm. It provides good in-gear punch, taking the strain out of overtaking at motorway speeds, and the extra grunt means it can tow a trailer of up to 1,800kg – that’s 300kg more than the petrol. When worked hard the engine does emit that tell-tale

diesel rattle, but it quietens down when cruising. Our test car’s all-wheel-drive system – which is available only with the 1.6-litre dCi – can send up to 50 per cent of the power to the rear wheels when the fronts start to slip, or you can lock it in 4x4 mode at lower speeds. We tried the car on a very mild off-road route and only ever saw a maximum of 10 per cent of the power transferred to the rear wheels on the on-board computer. And this highlights a key point: few people will ever need the extra grip over the front-wheel-drive car. For starters, the 4WD costs £1,500 more and economy drops from 62.8mpg to 57.6mpg. Also, it’s one second slower from 0-62mph at 11 seconds, due to the extra weight. Really, though, sprint times are less relevant for this type of car. Engine flexibility is key and, although we’ve yet to test it, we expect the 74.3mpg 1.5-litre diesel will be punchy enough for most people – and it offers a further £1,200 saving.

BADGERS REMEMBER MARGARET WESTON

On Wednesday, 10th June Badgers Golf Society, Mojacar, held a tournament at Marina Golf in commemoration of Margaret Weston, a long-standing member who sadly passed away one year ago. The event was sponsored by Margaret’s husband Mick, and son Mick Jnr – both Badgers members. The day was a great success with 36 players competing for a wide array of awards. Prizes were provided by donations from Badgers’ members which meant the normal prize pot fee from each player was donated to MACS cancer support charity. Marina Golf’s commercial management also kindly contributed prizes from the golf shop and offered special shop discounts with every green fee. Their support for the entire day was invaluable. After the game all the players and many non-playing friends gathered on the terrace overlooking the course for the prize presentation and a delicious buffet, compliments of the Weston family. Winning the individual Stableford competition with an impressive 41 points (and an equally impressive handicap cut) was Tony Rowbottom. Second place went to a resurgent Andy Mucha on 38 points, with Ken Dawkins third on 36. Prize for Leading Lady

player was won by Jackie Dale. There were many other winners with special mention of Jan Page who sponsored the Nearest The Pin on hole 5, then won it herself and converted for a birdie 2 for another prize! Eight other players won NTP’s including Neil Bown, who also won the Straightest Drive competition. The contribution of the players’ prize pot, plus a raffle, enables the Badgers and the Weston family to donate 300 euros to MACS. Badgers Golf Society, Mojacar play every Wednesday and Saturday. Members and visitors are always welcome. Oh dear, for the first time in a long time the 19th Hole got severely rained on, that, together with a fierce wind and enough lightning to power the Spanish National Grid for years to come certainly made this visit to the Lorca Golf resort on Thursday 11th June, memorable. Women's World Cup 2015 wide open for England

Women's World Cup: England v Colombia, Group F Date: 17 June. Kick-off: 21:00 BST. Venue: Olympic Stadium, Montreal. Coverage: Watch live on BBC Three and online, plus commentary on BBC Radio 5 live and text coverage on the BBC Sport website England can win the Women's World Cup and Colombia's victory over France proved the tournament is wide open, says forward Toni Duggan. The Lionesses face Colombia - the group's lowest-ranked side - in their final group game on Wednesday. "The Colombia win didn't change our goal. We still want to win this World Cup and we still can," said Duggan. "Colombia are tough but that's the beauty of the World Cup - everyone can beat everyone." England began their campaign with a 1-0 loss to France, who are third in the world, but then recovered with a 2-1 win over 25th-ranked Mexico on Saturday

in Moncton. They now face a Colombia side who, despite being 28th in the world, sit top of Group F after drawing 1-1 with Mexico in their opening match and then producing the shock of the tournament with a 2-0 victory over France. With three teams progressing to the second round from four of the six groups in the World Cup, the battle to qualify remains wide open with one match to play. Sixth-ranked England will probably need at least a point against Colombia to be sure of their qualification. They will draw confidence from their performance in the win over Mexico, where forward Fran Kirby scored the opener in her first World Cup start. The Reading striker, 21, is the only player in England's squad from the second tier of the Women's Super League. Kirby quit football four years ago after suffering from depression following the death of her mother. But she said she wants to create "more memories" in her first major tournament. "Colombia is an even bigger game for us now with their result against France," Kirby said. "We are buzzing and the mood is going to be great but we need to make sure we keep focus and get the job done in Montreal." BBC

Keith Thurman confirms he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather

WBA world welterweight champion Keith Thurman is confident of securing a big-money fight with Floyd Mayweather. Thurman defends his title against Luis Collazo on July 11 in Tampa and believes another eye-catching performance can help him earn a bout with WBA (super), WBO and WBC champion Mayweather. Mayweather is now 38 but with the likes of Thurman and Amir Khan making public their desire to face him in one last ‘super-fight’, ‘Money’ may try to finish his career by reaching 49 fights unbeaten. Thurman - unbeaten in his 25 bouts as a professional - told On the Ropes Boxing Radio: “We’re definitely in line for the Mayweather shot. We’ve been in line for the Mayweather shot for a minute but it doesn’t matter who I fight in the welterweight division.

“I would love Floyd Mayweather - he’s the man. Until the man retires, he’s the man. “I want to be a legend and the best way to become a legend is by taking out a legend, and that would be Floyd Mayweather.” Thurman, 26, secured the WBA crown when he outclassed Robert Guerrero over 12 rounds in Las Vegas back in March and will be making his first defence against Collazo.
