Uber to start from scratch in Spain in bid to overturn car-sharing ban
The car-sharing app was banned in December 2014 but is hoping to make a comeback in Spain. The US based car-sharing service was banned in Spain in December 2014, but has not given up on the country, instead planning to change its business model in order to compete with other apps, which have cornered the market in its absence. Uber will now only work with drivers who carry a valid professional VTC license, as required by all professional drivers, according to Spanish daily El Mundo. The changes bring Uber in line with rival Spanish startup Cabify, which has always used fully licensed drivers.
"We made mistakes. We still believe in our business model but maybe Spain is not mature enough to accept private individuals carrying out these services," Carles Lloret, head of Uber in Spain, told El Mundo. Uber was suspended in Spain in December 2014 after taxi drivers brought a lawsuit against the company. It hit back by filing a complaint against its Spanish ban with the European Commission in April 2015. Uber has faced mounting opposition throughout Europe. It has been banned in Germany - twice - and in France. thelocal.com

Quijote shares €30 coin with King Felipe and Queen Letizia
WE A FormaRE NOW O lly Ga stronoPEN mia
Come and see us this week and try our freshly prepared home-made pies, pasties, cakes, large selection of cheeses, cold meats and ALL THINGS DELI-LICIOUS!
A COMMEMORATIVE coin to mark the 400th anniversary of Don Quijote Part IV has been launched with the heads of King Felipe and Queen Letizia. A limited-edition €30 coin in solid sterling silver, the front face features the legendary fictitious 'knight' – in fact, an ordinary peasant addicted to chivalric novels who starts to believe he really lives in one – on his plain but trusty mare Rocinante and with his long-suffering, loyal and somewhat chubby sidekick Sancho Pancha kneeling beside him. A windmill stamped in an inset – the traditional landscape feature of the central region of Castilla-La Mancha and almost a character in its own right in Don Quijote – and the inscription 'El Quijote II, 1615-2015' feature on the same face. Queen Letizia and her husband, King Felipe VI – crowned last July after his father, Juan Carlos I abdicated – are on the reverse with their names. Although the coin has a face value of €30 and is legal tender, it will typically cost more than this as it is a one-off piece made of silver rather than the usual nickel.

spanish gardens in winter
Just because it is going to turn cold in a few months, does not mean your garden has to look dull or lifeless. Believe it or not, there are many plant options that you can use to make your yard and garden look great year round. So instead of thinking about plants going dormant, it is time to start planning and planting a few things that will stay colourful and look good through the winter when many other plants turn brown and leafless. Actually, anything that remains evergreen throughout the winter months may be considered a candidate for winter interest, but I have chosen some plants that flower, have great structure, or produce berries. Many more perennials could have been listed here, but hopefully you will get some inspiration from some of these: 1. Viola tricolor - Pansy Produces neat flowers with faces in shades of yellow, blue, violet, and white. Flowers in fall and often in winter. Self-seeds readily. 2. Rosa rugosa - Rugosa Rose This is a large shrub that grows to 8 feet (2.4m) and has good autumn colour. What makes this plant appealing for winter are the large tomato-like hips that are produced after it flowers. The hips are quite a feature and last all winter long. 3. Sedum ' H er b st f reu d e ' ('Autumn Joy') Landscaping - Irrigation - Garden Maintenance This plant has fleshy leaves and grows to 24 in Lawn work - Tree Trimming (60 cm). It has large heads Call: 666 847 583 or 950 132 518 of pink flowers that appear in the fall and eventually gardenworks.bates@gmail.com fade to copper colour and then turn red. So do not cut them back until the spring to get getthe themost most interest interest

Rohdea japonica
from this plant. 4. Arum italicum - Italian Arum Grows to 12 inches (30 cm). This is a tuberous perennial with broad arrowshaped leaves that appear in the autumn. The foliage dies back in the summer just as the decorative red berries appear. After the berries die, the foliage reappears, remains until the next summer, and is lush and green all winter. 5. Acorus gramineus - Sweet Flag Native to Japan, it has soft, curved leaves under 12 inches (30 cm) long and about ¼ inch (6 mm) wide. This plant is grown mainly for its foliage, which is sweet smelling. In the winter, it has beautiful texture and pleasing green, white and chartreuse colors. 6. Rohdea japonica - Lily of China During the winter months it forms clumps of deep green long leaves that are 8 -18 inches (20-45 cm) long. This plant has bright red berries during winter that contrast the dark green leaves very well. This is an excellent choice for a limited spread groundcover, a small specimen clump or even in a container.

Roquetas de Mar: Background Roquetas de Mar is a town which has grown into a city with a population of over 85,000. The town, name meaning ‘small rocks in the sea’, has a history dating back to pre-roman occupation times and also has a strong connection to the Moorish rulers of the area from 710 A.D. – early 1600s. The Castillo de Santa Ana dates from 1510. The old town has an economy based on fishing and agriculture; the large areas of plastic greenhouses to the west of the town are part of one of Europe’s most productive crop growing areas. The narrow streets of the old town are of a typical Spanish seaside town. In the late 1960s and early 1970s a new part of Roquetas began construction, referred to as the ‘playa Serena urbanization’. This development was to promote the area to the growing tourist industry in Spain. Roquetas de Mar is rapidly developing into one of the most attractive seaside resorts in southern Spain. It is popular with Spanish holidaymakers but increasing numbers of Northern Europeans are choosing to visit. Roquetas benefits from the micro climate of the Costa Almeria, due to shelter from the high mountain ranges of the Sierra Nevada’s behind it and being in a large bay. The area has the record for the highest sunshine hours and least rainfall for the entire Mediterranean coast of Europe, whilst still having large water supplies from the mountain area. This provides winter sunshine to rival the Canary Islands, and is a better overall climate that other Spanish Costas, but very hot in July & August often over 40c. At the end of August there is a chance of levante winds from North Africa. A broad spotless blue flag beach with toilet facilities, lifeguards, children’s play areas, disabled access and a palm tree lined seaside promenade ‘The Paseo maritimo’, that stretches for 10kms all the way to the town of Aguadulce, is the towns pride and joy. Las Salinas beach, to the east of the ‘old town’, is windy and used by wind surfers, kite surfers and for boating. The other beaches of the urbanization are more sheltered. The beaches are of fine coarse shingle and sandy in places but all good for sand castles.

Little-Known Facts
About Being Left-Handed
With just 10% of the population being left-handed, it can be easy for everyone else to forget we’re living in a right-handed world. But aside from making it tough to cut a straight line with a pair of scissors designed for righties, being a southpaw can also have some subtle effects on our physical and mental health. The brains and bodies of lefties may operate differently than those of right-handed people (and in mixed-handed people, who may have different dominant hands for different tasks). “Handedness seems to be determined very early on in fetal development, when a lot of other things about your future are being determined as well,” says Ronald Yeo, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of TexasAustin. Here’s a look at some of the most common facts about being left-handed, and what it might really mean for your health. It’s not just genetics Scientists aren’t exactly sure why some people are left-handed, but they know that genes are responsible about 25% of the time, says Yeo. Left-

handedness does tend to run in families, he says, “but noticeably less than other inherited traits, like height or intelligence.” In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes h a v e d i f ferent dominant ha nds. There are plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random, says Yeo. It’s linked to stress in pregnancy In one British study, the fetuses of super-stressed pregnant women were more likely to touch their faces more with their left hands than their right. This could be the first signs of a left-handed child, say the researchers. Other evidence supports that theory. In one 2008 Swedish study of moms and their 5-year-old children, women who were depressed or stressed during their pregnancies were more likely to have mixed- or left-handed kids. In
ot her studies, babies with low birth weight, or born to older mothers, were more likely to be lefties as well. It’s more common in twins Identical twins are sometimes mirror images of each other—one twin has a mole on her right cheek and the other has a mole in the same spot on her left cheek, for instance. It was once believed that twins’ genetic makeup should be “mirrored” as well—therefore, one

twin should be left-handed and the other should be right. (It was also once thought that all left-handed people started out as twins, and that their rightie siblings died in the womb.) Neither of these is true, but left-handedness is about twice as common in twins than in the general population. A 1996 Belgian study found that about 21% of twins, both fraternal and identical, are left-handed. It doesn’t make you “right-brained” Most right-handed people use the left hemisphere of their brains to process language, but that doesn’t mean most lefties are “right-brained”—that’s just a common myth, says Gina Grimshaw, PhD, director of the Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Wellington in New Zealand. About 98% of right-handers are left-brained, she says, but so are about 70% of left-handers. Only about 30% are right-brained or bilateral-brained (in which both halves are equally capable). “Most left-handers seem to have similar language processing to right-handers,” Grimshaw says. For other one-sided brain functions, such as attention, emotion, music, and face perception, she says, there are less data. “But for the most part, left-handers do not differ obviously from right-handers. They certainly don’t have reversed brains.” It may cause you to think differently Society tends to associate the left side of something with the bad (“two left feet”), and the right side with the good (“my right-hand man”). But if you’re left-handed, you might not think the same way as righties, according to a 2009 Stanford University study. Participants were shown two columns of abstract illustrations and asked which seemed more intelligent, happy, honest, and attractive. Righties were more likely to choose the illustrations in the right colu m n , while lefties were more likely to choose the drawings in the left column. “For left-handed people, implicitly, they think good stuff is on the left and bad stuff is on the right, even though consciously, explicitly, everything in language and culture is telling them the exact opposite,” the study’s lead author said in a press release. He believes this may even influence the way we vote on ballots, or which candidates we prefer when watching presidential debates. It can affect school performance In a 2009 study of children 11 and younger, Australian researchers found that left-handed kids performed worse than right-handers several measures, including vocabulary, reading, writing, social development, and gross and fine motor skills. Mixed-handed kids performed even worse than lefties. Mixed-handed and left-handed children are more likely to use the two halves of their brains in unusual ways, which may put them at risk for mild learning disabilities, says Yeo. At the same time, however, some mixed-handed kids have an unrelated learning disability that’s making them struggle

Time and Motion
So I am the only person standing at the bar waiting to be served a pint; the barmaid asks me to wait; disappears off for a while and comes back with some ice. Then she pours me a pint leaving me wondering why not serve the beer first, then go and get the ice that nobody is waiting for. Same bar – later I ask for another drink and as the barman is busy he offers to bring it over to my table, so I try and pay first, meaning he can then deliver my pint and leave. Instead his preferred way is to serve my drink at the table and ask for the money then, I hand him a note, he returns to the bar, rings it into the till and returns with my change. Other customers are standing, waiting to be served. Two trips when one would do, he does this all night as he is on his own and it takes ages to get served. The good old Time and Motion people would have a field day. Years ago when training in wine retail management I was seconded to an off licence in Cambridge which had the highest footfall in East Anglia. It was close to Kings College, a tiny shop the size of a bedroom with storage down a rickety staircase to the cellar. It was the shop of choice for every city centre smoker as it was the only fag shop around. I can’t remember
Researchers have unveiled a radical new 'ultrapower' laser that can heat materials to temperatures hotter than the centre of the Sun in only 20 quadrillionths of a second. The technique, developed by theoretical physicists from Imperial College London, could heat certain materials to ten million degrees in much less than a million millionth of a second. They say it could lead to a breakthrough in thermonuclear fusion energy, where scientists seek to replicate the Sun's ability to produce clean energy. The heating would be about 100 times faster than rates currently seen in fusion experiments using the world's most energetic laser system at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. 'It's a completely unexpected result,' said the paper's lead author, Dr Arthur Turrell. 'This method puts energy straight into the ions.' When lasers are used to heat most materials, the energy from the laser first heats up the electrons in the target. These in turn heat up the ions, making the process slower than targeting the ions directly. The Imperial team discovered that when a high-intensity laser is fired at a certain type of material, it will create an electrostatic shockwave that can heat ions directly. Normally, laser-induced electrostatic shockwaves push ions ahead of them, causing them to accelerate away from the shockwave but not heat up. However, using sophisticated supercomputer modelling, the team discovered that if a material contains special combinations of ions, they will be accelerated by the shockwave at different
speeds. This causes friction, which in turn causes them to rapidly heat. They found that the effect would be strongest in solids with two ion types, such as plastics. 'The two types of ions act like matches and a box; you need both,' explained study coauthor Dr Mark Sherlock from the Department of Physics at Imperial. 'A bunch of matches will never light on their own - you need the friction caused by striking them against the box.' 'That the actual material used as a target mattered so much was a surprise in itself,' added study co-author Professor Steven Rose. 'In materials with only one ion type, the effect completely disappears.' The heating is so fast in part because the material targeted is so dense. The ions are squeezed together to almost ten times the usual density of a solid material as the electrostatic shockwave passes, causing the frictional effect to be much stronger than it would be in a less-dense material, such as a gas. The technique, if proven experimentally, could be the fastest heating rate ever demonstrated in a lab for a significant number of particles. 'Faster temperature changes happen when atoms smash together in accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider, but these collisions are between single pairs of particles,' said Dr Turrell. 'In contrast the proposed technique could be explored at many laser facilities around the world, and would heat material at solid density.' Their discovery is published today in the journal Nature Communications Dailymail.co.uk

the managers’ name but he planted two pearls of wisdom in my little brain which I share now. One – the Mars Bar Theory! The impulse purchase. Right next to the till would be a display of Mars Bars or something similar. Customers couldn’t resist and would pick one up and give us 50p for it, Ka–ching! Hundreds of extra 50ps went in the till each week, meaning wider waists in Cambridge and fatter profits for the shop. Two – Don’t Come Up Empty Handed! As staff were often moving deliveries down the rickety stairs the manager had a sign at the bottom of the stairs saying ‘don’t come up empty handed!’ In other words make each journey count! The shop was so tiny it constantly needed replenishing. Cartons of cigarettes (and Mars Bars) were brought up on the return trip. We were also the shop of choice for all the city centre winos and so carrying up twin 2L packs of White Diamond industrial strength so called Cider gave us all arms like Popeye. Security on the cigs was high as the profit margins are so small even losing one packet of cigarettes will wipe out the profit made on the next 20 packs sold. Now in the UK a packet
of Lambert & Butlers retails at £7.19 and HM Customs and Excise pocket £5.77 leaving just £1.42 for the growers, manufacturers, warehousing, logistics and marketing; the shopkeeper makes just 37p of this. Smokers get a bad press I know and I am no exception! I welcomed the indoors smoking ban not only for my asthma but I just can’t abide the smell of smoke. A typical ex-smoker. May 18th 1994 I gave up – not that I am counting. It’s an easy date to remember as I was the stressed out Deputy Catering Manager at West Ham United F C and it was the final day of the Premier League football season. My smoking habit was getting out of hand as I would smoke not one but 2 cigs in quick succession when a break could be nabbed behind the newly opened Bobby Moore Stand. Nearly 20 years ago I vowed to give up after the last match and did!

Auto Trader’s half year profits hit £83m The group, which boasts roughly 43 million visits to its websites a month, said its underlying operating profit jumped 17% to £83m in the six months to 27 September compared to the same period last year. Auto Trader added the number of online advert views per month rose 9% to 240 million, while the average revenue it received from car forecourt retailers also rose 9% to £1,347 per month. Shares lifted 3%. The company, founded in 1977 as a classified ad magazine, floated on the London Stock Exchange in March at 235p a share, valuing the business at £2.35bn. UK car sales in October fell 1.1%, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) earlier this month. However, this was the first fall since early 2012. SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: ‘’The UK car market has gone through a period of unprecedented growth and, so far, 2015 has been a bumper year with the strongest performance since
the recession. ‘’As expected, demand has now begun to level off but the sector is in a strong position, as low interest rates, consumer confidence and exciting new products combine to attract new car buyers. The current full-year growth forecast remains on track.’’ Auto Trader was known for its magazine full of used-car adverts but it began to go online from 1996 and the final publication of the print magazine came in June 2013. In the mid-90s the group diversified into a number of foreign markets including Holland, South Africa and Italy. But in 2013 the business sold off most of its overseas operations and now focuses on the UK and Ireland. Auto Trader chief executive Trevor Mather said: “We believe there is substantial opportunity to grow the business based on the increasing importance of the internet for automotive advertising, and the growing use of data to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the industry.” bqlive.co.uk

ENGLISH DIVORCE PAPERS: PROBLEMS WITH CHANGING THE SPANISH PROPERTY INTO MY NAME Question: I have a property in Almerimar in joint names with my ex-husband. The English divorce papers state that the property (identified with its address) is to be signed over to me. Finally yesterday at the notary I realised that the address in my deed has a different street name from what appears on the divorce papers (the correct one is the one on the divorce papers that I provided to the court). Therefore the notary did not allow us to sign. I am getting to the end of what I can actually cope with as we previously were not allowed to sign because we were lacking the Hague´s Apostille and official translation stamp on the documents and a second time because we were told we needed power of attorney from my ex-husband if he was not going to be present. And now, instead of third time lucky - another problem. Answer: The problem has arisen because on the English divorce papers they have used a postal address (which in Spain can change ) instead of property register details, which is what we always use to identify real estate on public documents
that require access to a property register. Obviously the town hall at some point has changed the name of the street (this happens every now and again when for example they wish to name a street after somebody famous or considered to be worthy of such distinction by the local council). In any case there is no need to have the English documents changed now. All you need to do is satisfy the notary and registrar that the address stated on the deeds and the divorce papers actually correspond to the same property. This is easy to do. Visit the town hall and ask them to certify that the street now known as the name on your divorce papers used to be called the name on your deeds. The same would work if it is the numbering of the street that has changed. If this is not accepted, before trying to change the paperwork in the u.k. and starting over again, I would suggest trying a different notary. I have used this system on various occasions without any trouble. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Conflict
The battle lines are drawn, the barricades built. Alqueria holds its breath as the belligerents from each barrio plot and scheme. The rivalry between the two sections of Alquerian society has climbed that extra rung on the ladder of escalation from undeclared warfare to ‘de facto’ hostilities. The makeshift barricades of cobblestones and broken furniture, freshly broken for the purpose, kept the two factions apart as plans were laid by the belligerents to gain the upper hand. Nocturnal sorties became the operational choice with ‘commando’ groups from each barrio raiding the opposition by moonlight. Groups of black clad individuals faces obscured with burntcork could be seen creeping around the Pueblo after dark. Loco Paco took them to be friends of his imaginary five foot rodent friend ‘Bert’ and tried to lure them into his front room with large pieces of Manchego. The clandestine antagonists declined the invitation but were grateful for the cheese. The Hill People, led by Manuela always came out on top during these altercations. Both sides employed sneaky and underhand methods during hostilities but the Hill People’s sneakiness was always that bit more sneaky, better thought out and implemented with military precision worthy of Montgomery himself. To try and redress the balance the incursions by the Newcomers became increasingly desperate. The daubing of slogans on the walls of the Bar La Casa Devante, an old favourite of the Newcomers soon ended with the breaking of the bar’s windows. One
enterprising individual who had served in the Spanish forces powered CS gas tablets before putting them in the ash-trays. He reward came when the early evening drinkers evacuated the bar with eyes and noses streaming in an undignified but nevertheless p l e a s i n g spectacle.
Manuela was indignant and swore revenge. A council of war was summoned and plans duly laid for an audacious and hopefully ultimate raid on the enemy. The Alquerian drainage system suffers from the same problems as those associated with certain Egyptian port towns. A road tanker used to remove backed-up effluent is the busiest vehicle in the Village and always has a full cargo of the disgusting human residue. It was a simple matter to highjack the vehicle, after all who in their right mind would want to be within fifty metres of the thing. Reversing the pump’s action our group of giggling pseudo terrorists pumped the entire contents into the bar of La Golondrina Verde, the Newcomer’s watering hole. Manuela and her confederates were in high glee. A masterly stroke rendering the Bar uninhabitable and attracting a large flock of noisy seagulls. That night the Newcomer’s took speedy and terrible revenge. Manuela disappeared, kidnapped and spirited from Alqueria. Alqueria waits.
The back view of our house is graced by the presence of a pomegranate tree. When we arrived here in Spain and decided against perceived wisdom and common sense to create a garden in this rocky and wind-lashed area known as Limaria it was among the first batch of purchases we made. In a desperate bid to soften the gauntness of the grey shale area around our house, which would in time be optimistically called ‘The Garden’ we rushed in where angels would fear to tread. We betook ourselves to Organica with a reasonable knowledge of English gardening, only to discover that anything we might have learnt over the years tending the fertile and well-manured soil of Devon was of no use whatsoever in the dessicated desert in which we now lived. We traipsed the aisles of plants and surveyed the rows of pots, attended assiduously by Encarna, whose English was as minimal as our Spanish. It quickly became obvious that pointing at a plant and asking what it was was not going to add much to the total of our knowledge, and asking such details as the plant’s preferences or eventual size and shape was as mysterious as next week’s Lottery numbers. Much to our amazement, we ended up with all the plants that we had ordered. However, what they were, or what they would become, should they grow, was still a mystery. We busily planted all our little infants in the places where we hoped that they would be happy. The pomegranate tree courageously
Strictly 2015 Week 8
With a place for the Blackpool show up for grabs next week nobody was wanting to be eliminated. I have to say that this year is going to extremely tough to call. There could be up to 5 or 6 fighting for a place in the final with no front runner yet apparent despite what appeared to be early runners. Opening this weeks show were Anita Rani and Gleb and their Quickstep. She is still my dark horse and performed her quickstep with an excellent frame and great body contact throughout somewhat complex choreography. Occasionally Anita missed pointing her toes and her ankles were sickled (turned inwards) but apart from this very well danced. I awarded her a 9 and the judges 32. Next out were Jay McGuinness and Aliona and a Foxtrot. I loved Jay in the earlier rounds but I have to say I am left a little disappointed each week. Despite his excellent strong male lead and great story telling he is lacking once in ballroom hold and I can only put it down to the training from his partner. He could be absolutely fantastic but for some reason he just isn’t delivering. Let’s hope he can find it over the next few weeks or he could find himself in trouble when he should actually have an automatic place in the final. I gave him 9 and the judges a poor 30. Next to dance were Jamelia and Tristan with a Samba. Despite there being great Samba content here I don’t think I saw Jamelia close her feet once, and despite good rhythm she displayed awful twine toed feet and very poor arm movement. I gave her 5 and the judges 26. Helen George and Aljaz and their Tango
Skin-deep
were next to perform. Super staccatto action throughout the dance but for my liking there was just a bit too much of the dance out of hold and she was fighting staying down in her knees when in hold. That said a super performance with a 9 from myself and 34 from the judges. Katie Derham and Anton followed with a Rumba. Katie has beautiful feet and legs but didn’t use them correctly hence a lack of hip action. She was trying to be sexy but for me is just didn’t work and at times her timing was suspect. I gave her 7 and the judges a very generous 31 (better than Jay I don’t think so!) Next out were Kellie Bright and Kevin with a Samba and a hip hop vibe! I hated the music but I have to say the I did enjoy this performance. It shouldn’t have worked but for some reason it did. It was very slow so made the Samba choreography very easy to get right but Kellie did a great job and I gave her 9 with the judges 33. Peter Andre and Janette then danced a Viennese Waltz. Peter always portrays a great story and his frame is improving but he needs to keep his head left. This was very well danced and I gave him 8 and the judges 34. Georgia May Foot and Giovanni

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk laughed at adversity and thrived. It grew and filled out from a nondescript tangle of branches into a small but perfectly formed tree. With the arrival of Spring its winter bareness transformed into a profundity of small light green leaves, among which in due course an uncountable multitude of scarlet blossoms nestled. It is indeed a thing of beauty - were it a person it would be a lyric tenor, and sing with Il Divo. A considerable number of the flowers transformed into pomegranates, which filled and ripened to red russet globes of such magnificence that even José announced himself jealous of their beauty. But the majority of them are rotten inside. Why? I have raised them with tender affection, admired them and praised them on a daily basis, yet they have they repaid me so cruelly. Their beauty is indeed only skin deep, and I am devastated by their ingratitude!
were next with a Charleston. Danced to the music from Chicago finale - Wow! Wow! Wow! A traditional Charleston packed with high energy swivels kicks flicks and tricks absolutely superb and it got my 10 and the judges top slot with 39. Closing this weeks show was public favourite and the weakest link now by a long way Jeremy Vine and Karen with their Quickstep. Sorry Jeremy you are now so far behind in this competition that good dancers will have to leave to allow you to continue. As much as he enjoys his performance it is time to go. He gained 4 from me and bottom spot on 21 from the judges. The bottom 2 were Jeremy and Jamelia with Jeremy leaving the show after the dance off and judges unanimous vote. Next week we are at the home of Ballroom Dancing at the beautiful Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. Being a much bigger floor than the studio, it normally sorts the men out from the boys. I can’t wait to see who can step up to the mark. In the meantime come and join one of our classes and the ‘strictly’ gossip where singles are always made very welcome, until next week Keep Dancing! Book Review
A Matter of Honour by Jeffrey Archer
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“The simple beauty of the golds, reds and blues left them both speechless. Neither of them had expected the icon to be so breathtaking.” I loved this Archer classic and felt that I was following the trials and tribulations of 007 instead of Captain Adam Scott. The story begins interestingly with the discovery that the painting of St. George and the Dragon, displayed in the Winter Palace, Leningrad for more than 50 years under heavy guard, is a fake. The treasures inside the palace have been carbon-dated and it is now known that this painting in question was done 500 years after Rublev’s original. Nicholas IInd, The Tsar’s traditional silver crown was not attached to the back of the frame. It was believed that the Tsar had secreted something valuable inside the icon, something so valuable that it would have guaranteed security for himself and his family. But it was hidden away for decades, undiscovered until 1966. The protagonist, Adam Scott has resigned his army commission after an exemplary career in distinguishing himself. He was awarded the Sword of Honour and was hopeful to join the Foreign Office. Action begins in Appleshaw, U.K. with the reading of his father’s will. A small, insignificant legacy is bequeathed to his mother, sister and Adam himself, expected but the biggest and strangest surprise comes with an envelope stipulating that should he decide to open the envelope it must be on the condition that he will never divulge its contents to any living person. How mysterious. We discover that his father, Gerald had allegedly been a traitor. In his last posting he had responsibility for a number of senior ranking Nazis awaiting trial for war crimes: Hess, Doenitz, Speer and Goering. The night before Goering’s execution the Nazi officer had requested a private meeting with Gerald where he handed him an envelope hoping that this would compensate him for being held responsible for future events such as treachery. He was told it was a masterpiece and not to underestimate its value. Sadly, Gerald didn’t open or destroy the envelope so he didn’t benefit from Goering’s gift. The Nazi died from cyanide poisoning immediately after this private meeting and naturally, Gerald was held responsible for the suicide and dishonoured. Adam inherited the apparent sins of the father, hence his resignation from the army. Out of curiosity and with a sense of honour Adam opens the envelope

hoping that his mother can benefit from the windfall. He discovers that Goering left his father the Tsar’s icon of St. George and the Dragon which is now rightfully his and thus he begins a perilous journey to Geneva to claim what is rightfully his.
In true Archer style we meet the antagonist, a ruthless Russian KGB agent, capable of betraying his own father for his own advancement, lacking in moral scruples and extremely dangerous. He is given the commission of finding the original icon and returning it to its rightful owners-the Russians. It’s not long before he crosses swords with Adam Scott. Adam is soon on the run when the newspaper headlines read: Englishman sought after German girl and Swiss taxi driver murdered.” The Swiss police as well as English, Russian and American agents are on his tail, after his blood. Why is this icon so precious? All this espionage over a painting. Or is there more to it than meets the eye? Adam comes to realise that there is something much more valuable hidden inside the icon that justifies espionage and murder but what is it? Why do the Americans as well as the Russians and the British want to get their hands on it? Adam comes to realise that he can’t trust anyone and he has to face his adversary, Romanov, alone. Can he survive and more importantly, can he prove his father’s innocence in the death of Goering to restore his father’s honour posthumously? Prove the hero? Frank Marshall (Bourne and Indiana Jones fame) produced a movie based on Archer’s book which is worth watching. If you enjoyed this you might like to look at the sequel: Honour Among Thieves. Publisher: Pan.

Mileage Clocking Gang Arrested
review
Audi Q7 e-tron (2016) plug-in hybrid
The Q7 gets its own back when it comes to electric range and overall refinement. Audi claims up to 56km (34.8 miles) of electriconly running – and without putting in any particular effort we were able to travel very nearly that distance without troubling the internal combustion engine. It’ll happily stay an EV at motorway speeds, too. When it does kick in, the six-pot is not only smooth but surprisingly sonorous, helped by the world-first application of active engine mounts on a diesel. It’s a much more cultured experience than the gruff Mercedes, which also can’t match the Audi’s interior quality. Verdict The Q7 e-tron is a convincing application of current plug-in hybrid technology, very refined, sleek inside and tidy to drive. But at an expected price of £65,000 – some £12,000 more than the next most expensive Q7 – you’ve got to really want the tech and be in a position to make best use of the electric range in order to seriously consider one as a private buyer. You also have to understand that ‘current’ technology means even a rapid charger needs 2.5 hours to fully replenish the battery, while a domestic supply demands 8 hours, and the discipline to plug it in every night.

And then there were two. The Q7 e-tron is Audi’s second plugin hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) – and in terms of environmental impact it’s not difficult to imagine the Q7 needing more of this kind of assistance than the existing A3 e-tron. Audi’s premier SUV is not a small vehicle. In fact, it’s one of the UK market’s largest 4x4s. Which means adding an electric motor and a massive battery pack might make a bit of sense, even if it also cancels out the final row of seats. So why should I go for the Audi Q7 e-tron over the remaining three? Even with all the weight Audi’s managed to take out of the second-generation Q7 Price when new: £65,000 platform, the e-tron can’t On sale in the UK: match the nimble, fleet-footed spring 2016 feel of the BMW – nor the raw Engine: 2967cc V6 turbodiesel performance of the (noisy) with electric motor, combined twin-charged Volvo. At nearly 2.5-tonnes, including 202kg system output 368bhp and of electronics and batteries 516lb ft hanging out over the back Transmission: eight-speed axle, it’s impressive just how automatic, four-wheel drive safe and assured it actually is, thundering along a mountain Performance: 6.0sec road on 20-inch wheels and 0-62mph, 140mph, 166mpg, the optional air suspension. But 46g/km CO2 (tbc) Weight / not even 368bhp, 516lb ft and material: 2445kg / aluminium five-link aluminium suspension and steel Dimensions can really make the Audi (length/width/height in mm): exciting to drive. Quick enough, 5052/1968/1741 yes. Exciting, no.
Officers from the Guardia Civil in Guadalajara have dismantled a gang of criminals who would manipulate the recorded mileage of vehicles in order to increase their apparent value before selling them. The gang would obtain vehicles through leasing companies created for the sole purpose of the deception and after purchasing the vehicles they would then manipulate the mileage and documentation to increase the market value, then sell them through internet portals where the vehicle history was less likely to be checked. The final transaction was usually completed in car parks and shopping centres, and so the victims had no record of the real location or address of the sellers. The gang was based in the Guadalajara and Madrid areas, but sold the vehicles across the country, conning innocent buyers into buying overpriced and potentially dangerous vehicles. In total, the investigators have identified more than 200 victims of the scam, although they believe that more victims will be revealed as the complex investigation continues. So far, victims of these scams have been located in the provinces of Guadalajara, Toledo, Ávila, Madrid, Cáceres, Castellón, Tarragona, Tenerife, Palma de Mallorca, Bizkaia, Málaga, Jaén and Almería. In total, six people have been arrested so far, five men and a woman, all aged between 33 and 42, all suspected of the crimes of fraud, forgery and conspiracy. One arrestee has already entered prison having been wanted in connection with other offences. An additional eight people are also under investigation. During the raids, the officers recovered documentation, numerous car keys, mobile phones, cash, computer equipment and business stamps for six companies. If you are purchasing a second-hand car you can check the vehicle´s history yourself via the DGT´s website. There are a number of articles about buying and selling a used car in Spain on this website, just look at the driving in Spain FAQ list or search above, and you should always complete a sales record form and take copies of documents from the seller. It is also wise to use a reputable dealer, such as our supporters at Autos Direct, where the history of the transaction is recorded and maintained.

Tony Matthews Football Writer extraordinaire
Tony Matthews - Black Country born and bred – and believed to be the world’s most prolific author/writer/ co-compiler of football books, has just signed a contract to produce his 150th., entitled ‘Sir Bobby Robson: 50 Defining Fixtures’. This will be released by Amberley Publishing, Stroud, Gloucestershire next year. Right now he is busily working on a similar publication appertaining to the career of striker Cyrille Regis who, of course, played for West Bromwich Albion, Coventry City, Aston Villa and Wolves, winning the FA Cup with the Sky Blues in 1987. Tony said: “An awful lot of research goes into compiling a book of ’50 Defining Fixtures’. I enjoy every minute of it - really but it can also

prove to be a bit of a nightmare especially when you have to choose just fifty out of perhaps 500, 600 even more the player in question has appeared in. But with the help of several diehard and efficient and indeed, helpful supporters, footage via Youtube, a variety of matchday programmes and quite a few newspapers, I got there eventually.” The photograph here shows Tony – at home in sunny Spain - with a selection of the football books he has had published since 1975. Over 30 have featured his home town club, West Bromwich Albion in one form or another. Forty years on and still going strong, he is hoping soon to receive confirmation that he has been recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Nico Rosberg beats Lewis Hamilton in Brazilian Grand Prix
Nico Rosberg beat Lewis Hamilton for the second race in succession to win the Brazilian Grand Prix. The German converted pole position into a lead at the first corner and controlled the race from there, despite Hamilton pushing hard throughout. Hamilton looked faster but in the turbulent air behind Rosberg's car he was unable to get close enough to try to pass his team-mate. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was third ahead of team-mate Kimi Raikkonen. Mercedes dominated the race but there was plenty of tension as Hamilton sought a way to try to beat his teammate, his competitive desire undimmed by settling his third world title two races ago. Hamilton made slightly the better start but was forced to the outside at the first corner and had to settle into second place in the early laps. He stayed just over a second and a half behind until their first pit stops and then made a push to try to pass him in the first part of the second stint. For nearly 10 laps, Hamilton was within a second of his team-mate, before his tyres began to lose their edge and he had to back off. He pleaded with Mercedes to put him on a different strategy, but was told this was not a good idea because of the potential threat from Ferrari behind. As it turned out, Mercedes did have to change their strategy, converting from two pit stops to three when tyre degradation turned out to be more severe than expected. Hamilton came out from their final stop 1.5 seconds behind and with 20 laps to go. But again he was thwarted in his attempts to get close enough to pass as Rosberg drove a strong race in front of him, helped by what some might have considered coaching over the radio form his engineer, which is not allowed. "It was a great weekend for me. Of course everything is relative with what happened back in Paris, but it went perfectly. Lewis put on a great challenge but I was able to control it and I was really happy with that," he said. Hamilton said: "I had good pace but you just can't overtake here. I was behind Nico and in traffic for some time and I just killed my tyres. I don't know if there
w a s anyone else overtaking, unless you have a huge advantage you can't get close." Vettel ran the Mercedes a touch closer than might have been expected, helped by doing a short third stint on a set of the faster but less durable 'soft' tyres. But the German was still 11 seconds behind the Mercedes by the time the final pit stops were over, underlining how much work Ferrari have to do over the winter to try to catch Mercedes and mount a title challenge next season. Vettel was well ahead of Raikkonen, who had a similarly large gap over Williams driver Valtteri Bottas, while Force India's Nico Hulkenberg held off Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat for sixth. Williams' Felipe Massa had finished eighth at his home race but was excluded afterwards because his rightrear tyre temperature was 27C above the permitted maximum before the start of the race. Williams have appealed against the decision. Verstappen "as good as Senna and Schumacher" Max Verstappen again showed his potential as a future world champion on his way to 10th place, which became ninth after Massa's exclusion from the results. The Dutchman pulled a brilliant overtaking move on Force India's Sergio Perez, taking the outside line around Turn One and holding on for the inside on Turn Two to make it stick. He then repeated the move again on Sauber's Felipe Nasr later in the race to ensure he split the Lotus cars of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado. BBC F1 analyst said: "I have compared him to Schumacher and Senna. I feel at this stage of his career he is that good." http://www.bbc.com/
