Spain cocaine seizure: Drug disguised as wooden pallets Spanish police said on Friday they have seized 40 pallet s m a d e out of 1.4 tonnes of compressed cocaine that was made to look like wood that arrived on a shipping container from Colombia. The authorities arrested 12 people in Spain, Dubai and Britain as part of the operation, including two Colombian experts in using chemicals to process cocaine into different formats, police said in a statement. The shipping container laden with what appeared to be sacks of charcoal on wooden pallets arrived in the Mediterranean port of Valencia, Spain's second-busiest port, on November 30. But a forensic examination found that the pallets were made of compressed cocaine powder made to look like wood, and some of the sacks contained cocaine disguised as charcoal. The authorities suspect the group used a charcoal company in Spain as a front to import the cocaine and hide a lab where the drug was extracted

663 302 740

from pallets and charcoal, processed and repackaged for distribution across Europe. Police in October seized 300 kilos of cocaine from a container loaded with pureed bananas that arrived from Costa Rica at the port of Valencia. Spain's close ties with its former colonies in Latin America have made it the main entry point used by drug smugglers to bring cocaine into Europe. Smugglers have used increasingly ingenious methods to get the drug past Spanish customs. In recent years police have found cocaine inside breast implants, a wig, a plaster cast encasing a man's broken leg as well as inside a 42-piece crockery set and hidden inside a banana shipment. thelocal.es

The UK maker of the Nurofen “specific pain” range of products has defended their packaging, after an Australian court ordered the products off shelves. The court said the UK-based Reckitt Benckiser had misled consumers. It said products marketed to treat specific pains, such as migraine, were identical to one another. Nurofen said the products had been “designed to help the consumer easily navigate our range”, particularly in groceries where there was no pharmacy. “Consumer research indicates that 9 in 10 people (88%) look for pain relief for a specific type of pain (eg headache, migraine, back pain) and 7 in 10 (71%) say pain-specific packs help them decide which product is best for their needs,” said Dr Aomesh Bhatt, regulatory and medical affairs director for Nurofen. “How to pick the best painkiller” Active ingredient The products affected by the Australian court order include Nurofen Back Pain, Nurofen Period Pain, Nurofen Migraine Pain and Nurofen Tension Headache. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) watchdog had brought the matter to court earlier this year. The ACCC said the court had found that the firm had “engaged in misleading conduct in contravention of the Australian consumer law by

representing that its Nurofen Specific Pain products were each formulated to treat a specific type of pain, when the products are identical”. Each product contained the same active ingredient, ibuprofen lysine 342mg. And the ACCC said the products were found to be “no more effective at treating the type of pain described on its packaging than any of the other Nurofen specific pain products”. ACCC research also found that in Australia the products were sold for almost double the price of Nurofen’s standard product. No UK changes Manufacturer Reckitt Benckiser said the case related only to Australia, and that it was continuing to work with regulators there “to ensure Nurofen packaging continues to be fully aligned with all guidelines and requirements”. It said the ruling would not be applicable in other countries, including the UK, where it sells Nurofen Migraine Pain and Nurofen Tension Headache in caplets, as well as Nurofen Express Period Pain in soft capsules. The ACCC said the cost of Iboprofen pain specific products was more than comparable products “As such all Nurofen products remain available and there will be no changes to packaging,” the company added. Two Spanish policeman killed in Taliban attack near Kabul embassy

Updated: A second Spanish policeman has died following a Taliban attack near Spain’s embassy in Kabul that also killed at least four Afghan policemen, Spain’s interior ministry said on Saturday. Bomb explodes outside Spain’s embassy in Libya (21 Apr 15) Officer Jorge Garcia Tudela died at dawn from wounds sustained during the siege in the Afghan capital’s diplomatic quarter late on Friday, the ministry said in a statement. News of the Tudela’s death comes after Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy confirmed late on Friday that a first policeman had been killed in the attack. He was named as Isidro Gabino Sanmartín Hernández by Spanish media. The officers were killed during an an hours-long Taliban siege near the Spanish embassy in Kabul’s diplomatic quarter, the latest high-profile insurgent attack that ended early on Saturday. During the siege, security men near the embassy ducked from gunshots as they

hauled away a limp body and two wounded men -- one bleeding from the head, the other a policeman with a gunshot wound to his leg -- through the dark to a waiting ambulance, a photographer with the AFP news agency saw. The embassy had been earlier reported to be the target of the attack, but Rajoy clarified that the assault was nearby and not on the compound. “It was an attack against some guesthouses very near the embassy,” the Spanish prime minister said, confirming all embassy staff had been evacuated. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the target was a foreign guest house. Afghan special forces had cordoned off the area in Sherpur district in central Kabul, where a huge car bomb struck during rush hour on Friday evening, followed by bursts of gunfire. Ambulances and fire brigades with wailing sirens were seen rushing to the area. Sherpur is home to several foreign NGOs and the residences of senior government officials, including former warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum, Afghanistan’s first vicepresident. thelocal.es

CHRISTMAS TV

Strictly Come Dancing

6:35pm, Saturday, 19 December 2015, BBC1 Who’ll claim this year’s trophy? It’s going to be a closer call than ever… What a series! We’ve been introduced to Gleb (swoon), seen a new side to Jeremy Vine and enjoyed one of the closest competitions in Strictly history. Now, one dazzling couple is about to be crowned champions – and it’s still anyone’s guess who’ll be taking home that glitterball trophy. In the first of tonight’s nail-biting episodes, our fab four will each perform an old routine chosen by the judges and a rip-roaring showdance. Then, in our second instalment, one couple will be eliminated, leaving the remaining three to battle it out with their favourite dances of the series. The winner will be chosen by viewer votes alone, with no input from the judges. But who will it be?

From the Downton Abbey finale to a brand new episode of Sherlock and Harrison Ford back in the new Star Wars to the legend Sir David Attenborough… it's that time of year once again Are you ready to start squabbling over who watches what and when in your house this year? 5:15pm, Friday, 25 December 2015, BBC1 There are gags galore as the Doctor runs into River Song, who seems to have taken a couple more husbands – including a murderous robot with the face of funnyman Greg Davies. The running joke that River fails to recognise her Time Lord life partner’s new(ish) face is perfectly played by Alex Kingston and Peter Capaldi as they land on a space cruise packed with the galaxy’s wealthiest and worst people. A fun-filled festive treat!

Christmas Day

8:45pm, Friday, 25 December 2015 ITV What do we want for Christmas? A happy ending for Lady Edith… ‘I hate goodbyes’, ‘Good things come to an end’ and ‘We’ve been together a long time’ are some of the poignant lines from this final, feature-length, episode of TV’s most famous period drama. They couldn’t be more appropriate – it’s all about bidding a heartfelt farewell to the characters we’ve known and loved (and sometimes loved to hate). Set in the summer of 1925 and then a magical New Year’s Eve, this swansong has lovely nods to characters and plots from the past and a great guest role for Patricia Hodge as Bertie’s mum. But can Edith find happiness and will Baby Bates ever arrive? Guaranteed to leave you with a smile, and a few tears.

a better way of life. This is the biggest draw of the year and tends to mark the beginning of the festive period in Spain, El Gordo, with the draw made each year on December 22. The winning numbers are drawn by pupils of the San Ildefonso primary school in Madrid, which was once an orphanage and has always been home to the children who make the draw. More recently a summer draw has been introduced. The tickets to enter the draw (décimos and participaciones) can be bought from authorised traders. The draw is part of the traditional Christmas build up and is well-covered by Spanish TV and radio. The draw is held the morning of the December 22 and lasts for about three hours. Simple up ‘do

Christmas is such a frantic time that it can be difficult to find the energy to fuss over hair styles. Yet if you want to look fantastic then one of the best beauty tips you can master is the art of simple hairdos. If you want to put your hair up, try twisting one section from the front of your hair; once twisted pin into place at the back of your head. Repeat with the other side. Then take the remainder of your hair and tie a messy bun. This look is elegant, simple and more importantly quick.

Glittery lips

Nothing says Christmas like glitter, and slathering some sparkly goodness on your pout will definitely bring you some Christmas cheer this year. To master the look, line your lips with a light coloured lip pencil and add foundation to the corners of your mouth. Then apply a creamy lipstick using a lip brush before using a flat brush to add on your glitter. You can finish with a gloss. To glam up your lips even more add some clear lip gloss. The one thing to bear in mind if you’re considering having glittery lips for a Christmas do is that drinking, eating and kissing may be off limits; so weigh

up your priorities before donning a glitter your blusher as applying it too high can pout. make you look tired.

Combat alcohol

Although you may like sipping a tasty mojito or cosmopolitan, your skin doesn’t. Alcohol dehydrates you and can leave your skin dry, grey and dull. To make sure your skin glows despite the endless flow of alcohol over the festive period your moisturiser won’t be enough. Instead invest in some cleansing milks that contain hylauronic acid. You could also apply a brightening face mask; look for ones that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, as this natural acid helps to destroy dead skin skills, firm up skin and moisturize.

Tired eyes

All those nights partying to Mariah Carey and Wham! is bound to leave even young eyes looking tired. To make sure you stay looking bright and alert over Christmas give yourself a little eye massage to get rid of puffy eyes. Begin at the corner of one of your eyes and work your way up, between your brow bone and your eye, rubbing as you go until you reach the outer edge of your eye. Repeat along your lower lash line. Also, be careful about where you apply

Flat stomach

For most of us, a flat, washboard stomach is like the elixir of life – a distant, priceless dream that will never become a reality. Yet we have a few tricks that might make that flat tummy achievable. Firstly, try taking peppermint capsules or aloe vera juice. Each do a fantastic job in supporting the digestive system and both can help you achieve a flat stomach by preventing bloating. So that you can look amazing in your Christmas outfit, you can also cut out certain foods that

Christmas Trees

Christmas has been around for a good few years now; with plenty of myths and fun facts doing the rounds at the same time. In 1840; Victoria’s Prince Albert supposedly first brought a Christmas tree into the house or rather palace. In fact it was 40 years earlier that Queen Charlotte the German wife of King George III potted up a yew tree and displayed it in the largest room at Queens Lodge Windsor. She was carrying on a tradition brought over from Germany of hanging and decorating evergreen boughs around the house and decided for Christmas 1840 to ‘Go Large!’ The tree was decorated, hung with goodies and gifts then lit with wax candles. At the childrens’ party she held; all the little guests were given beautiful and tasty treats off the tree. After that it became quite the thing in high society to bring a tree into the house at Christmas. Lord Kenyon in 1802 wrote in his diary that he was off to buy candles for his tree. In 1804 another diary entry by the Fifth Earl of Bristol mentioned setting a tree up for his children in Suffolk. Then in 1807 the

Prime Minister of Britain; the Duke of Portland mentioned bringing a tree in for a ‘juvenile’ party. In 1829 Charles Greville spent Christmas at the home of the Fifth Earl of Cowper and his wife Lady Emily. Greville wrote that on a long table covered with pink satin; Lady Emily had placed three trees in large pots one for each of their children. Presents were laid underneath suitable for each child; toys, books, gloves, handkerchiefs with not an Xbox in sight. It was all very pretty he noted. Then after Prince Albert first imported his Christmas trees to Windsor Palace in 1840; the periodicals of the time such as The Illustrated London News would studiously report and picture the trees and decorations in the Royal Palaces of England. After that the practice quickly spread across Britain. In 1848 the London News picture of the tree was reprinted in a magazine in republican America, they removed Queen Victoria’s crown and cut off Albert’s moustache to make it more American and less royal. The first tree inside a house was reputedly done in northern

A US town has rejected plans for solar panels amid fears they would ‘suck up all the energy from the sun’

A US town has rejected a proposal for a solar farm following public concerns. Members of the public in Woodland, North Carolina, expressed their fear and mistrust at the proposal to allow Strata Solar Company to build a solar farm off Highway 258. During the Woodland Town Council meeting, one local man, Bobby Mann, said solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not go to Woodland, the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald reported. Jane Mann, a retired science teacher, said she was concerned the panels would prevent plants in the area from photosynthesizing, stopping them from growing. Ms Mann said she had seen areas near solar panels where plants are brown and dead because they did not get enough sunlight.

She also questioned the high number of cancer deaths in the area, saying no one could tell her solar panels didn't cause cancer. The area around Woodland is a popular choice because it has an electrical substation allowing the panels to be hooked up to the national grid. A spokesperson for Strata told the meeting: "There are no negative impacts. A solar farm is a wonderful use for a property like this." They added: "The panels don't draw additional sunlight." The council voted three to one against rezoning the land and later voted for a moratorium on future solar farms. Speaking after the COP-21 summit on climate change in Paris pledged to limit global warming below the threshold of 2°c, Pope Francis said the plan will require "a concerted and generous commitment" from everyone. Experts said a move towards renewable power, with investment in wind and solar energy, will be required to cut down on emissions. http://uk.businessinsider.com/

Germany by Martin Luther the religious reformer way back in 1536. Walking at night through the forest he saw hundred of stars glinting between the boughs of a fir tree which somehow reminded him of Jesus descending from heaven. He was so moved that he killed the tree and placed it decorated in his house for his children to enjoy. In 1584, it’s recorded that across the German border in Riga, Latvia; a decorated tree was placed in the Square where young men and fair maidens danced around it before setting it alight. In 1570 in the Guild House of Bremen a tree was decorated with paper flowers, apples, nuts and of course pretzels. Germany really was the start of all things Christmas tree and by 1605 decorated trees for found across Germany. German glass makers’ made beautiful baubles for trees and tinsel was invented by beating strips of silver wafer thin. In northern Europe candles are often still used for decorating trees. There were

some horrific fires caused by candles in trees including in 1885; an entire Chicago hospital burnt to the ground. In 1895 a telephonist called Ralph Morris invented the first electric Christmas lights and things got a whole lot safer. There’s even a Guinness World record for the largest amount of lights placed on a single tree; in 2010 194,672 lights were put on a tree in Malmedy, Belgium. That record was mega busted a year later in Canberra Australia when the record rose to 331,038. Shijiao in China is the favoured destination for recycling Christmas lights with about 10,000 tonnes going there every year. Happy Christmas to all Sol Times readers!

New Year's Eve Facts And Trivia: Fun Things To Know About The Holiday

New Year’s Eve is one of the favorite celebration days for many people. Parties aside, the impending New Year typically brings hope for a more prosperous and happy 365 days. There are also some fun facts and trivia associated with the celebration. Check them out below, courtesy of the Examiner and Patch. The first New Year was celebrated 4,000 years by the ancient Babylonians. It’s tradition to ring in New Year’s with family and friends because the first people you see will either give

you good luck or bad luck. So make sure to keep friends close and foes very far away More vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday, statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed. The top three places to celebrate New Year’s Eve are Las Vegas, Disney World and of course, New York City. Internationally, one of the biggest celebrations is in Sydney, Australia. More than 80,000 fireworks are set off from Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Time Square New Year's Eve Ball was first dropped in 1907 after there was a fireworks ban. Back then, a 700-pound ball embellished with 25-watt bulbs made of iron and wood was dropped. Now, however, it weighs 11,875 pounds, is 12 feet in diameter and is adorned with 2,668 Waterford crystals. The tradition has continued in Times Square, except for in 1942 and 1943. The ball was not lowered because of wartime restrictions. In Italy, people wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. In Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico, some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories.

Strictly semi final

This was, I have to say, very much a show of two halves. The first dances of all except Jay left much to be desired whereas the second half was a totally different ballgame with 3 performers certain for the final in my opinion. Opening the show this week were Katie Derham and Anton with a Charleston. With so many superb charleston routines having been danced this year, this was an ‘oh dear!’ moment. I didn’t like the choreography which I found boring, and with non existent foot swivels, a full section out of time with her partner this left much to be desired. I gave her 5 and the judges bottom place with 25. Next were Jay McGuinness and Aliona with a Viennese Waltz. Another beautiful performance from Jay where he created the atmosphere immediately from the onset. I would just love to see him breathe more life into his upper body otherwise a faultless performance. I awarded him 9 and the judges undermarked on 34. Georgia May Foote and Giovanni then danced a Cha Cha Cha. Unfortunately Georgia was sick for 3 days this week and unfortunately this dance suffered as a consequence. Her weight was too far back and her Cha Cha action as a result was very plonky. However for the amount of training not a bad try. I gave her 7 and the judges 33. Anita Rani and Gleb then danced a Foxtrot. With nice smooth characterisation this ended up being more an American Smooth than Foxtrot with too much out of hold. Her feet really are awful and unfortunately the choreography once again highlighted her weakness. I gave her 7 and the judges 32. Closing the first dance was Kellie Bright and Kevin with a Rumba. The piece of music was extremely slow and is difficult enough for a professional dancer to control, unfortunately Kellie didn’t manage it and overbalanced several times within the choreography. Her Rumba leg action was very good and I think given a proper piece of Rumba music would have scored much

higher. I awarded her 8 and the judge 34. Katie and Anton returned for their second dance which was a Waltz. Much better than her Charleston as she is certainly in safe hands with Anton in the Ballroom genre. I found this dance very patchy, some parts like the pivot turns were excellent and then other parts she was so off balance Anton was holding her up. I awarded her 8 and the judges 31. A Charleston treat was next with Jay and Aliona. Flashback to the 1920s, Jay was so laid back and relaxed in this number it was a dream to watch. A well deserved 10 and the judges undermarking again on 37. Georgia and Giovanni then danced a Viennese Waltz. This was beautifully accented full of Viennese content with pivots, natural and reverse turns and fleckerls. Superb performance and deserved another 10 and judges 38. Following were Anita and Gleb an a Salsa. What a piece of awful music! yet again a danced ruined by inappropriate music. There were some very clever lifts and tricks here but it wasn’t Salsa and the bit evident was not very well danced. A disappointing 7 and judges 32. Closing the show were Kellie and Kevin with their American Smooth. A superb characterisation that was so lyrical soft and light. Another great performance move over Fred and Ginger! Another 10 with 39 from the judges. So from the second dances I think you can see

It’s good luck to eat foods like black eyed peas, ham and cabbage because it is thought they bring prosperity. But if you want to have a happy new year, don’t eat lobster or chicken. Lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune. Chinese New Year is celebrated the second full moon after the winter solstice. Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashanah. Apples and honey are traditionally eaten. In ancient Rome the new year began on March 1. The traditional New Year’s song, “Auld Lang Syne,” means, “times gone by.” The top 10 resolutions are usually to lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, get more organized, be more patient, find a better job and to just be a better person over all. Using a baby to signify the New Year began in ancient Greece around 600 B.C. http://www.ibtimes.com/

my top 3 dancers with Anita taking the fourth place although she is not in the same class as the others. This is going to be a humdinger of a final! It will be extremely close that is unless the public eject yet another finalist beforehand! I have to say though that I have found the judges scoring rather odd this year. Some of the celebrities getting consistently higher scores than they deserved and others consistently low. I believe the only true scoring this year has come from Craig. I’m normally the same score or one either way from him. Favouritism this year has been with Katie and underscoring Jay consistently. There is no comparison between these two dancers. In the bottom two were Anita and Katie with Anita being ejected after a 3 to 1 verdict from the dance off (I would have had Anita into the final). For me it is still between Jay and Georgia. THE BEST PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!! Ski Season Kicks Off With Increases in Holiday Rental Prices As the ski season in Spain begins, rental prices for holiday accommodations located closest to the country’s most popular ski stations have risen substantially, according to a recent study carried out by holiday home rental website, Rentalia. Data from the portal’s study revealed that renting an apartment for five people less than half an hour’s drive from the most popular ski areas costs an average of 1,015 euros per week, which represents an increase of 12.5% over the prices of last year. A spokesman for the rental portal said that there are great expectations for the rental occupancy rates during the ski season in both Spain and other nearby ski resorts, and that this has provoked the increase in prices for this season. According to the study, rental prices vary greatly depending on the location of the resort. Holiday homes situated near the Sierra Nevada (Granada), for example, are priced at an average of 1,407 euros per week, and top the ranking, after prices there increased by almost 15% year-on-year. In second place on the ranking

“Our Experience is your Guarantee”

stands the independent principality of Andorra, situated between France and Spain in the Pyrenees mountains, where rental prices are around 1,155 euros per week, followed by: Baqueira Beret (located in the Aran Valley, Lleida), at a weekly cost of 1,032 euros (+8.4% y-o-y); Formigal (Huesca), at 994 euros (+18%), and Cerler (Huesca), with an average price of 934 euros per week (+6.7% y-o-y). In contrast, the most affordable ski resort on the ranking is Candanchú (Huesca), where holiday home rentals cost nearly half the price of those in the Sierra Nevada, at an average of 710 euros per week (+16% over last year), which is also similar to the cost of rental accommodations close to the ski resort of Astún (Jaca, Huesca). Idealista.com reported that, according to Rentalia, 76.5% of the rental accommodations close to the main ski resorts are apartments and studios, while 23.5% of them are houses and chalets. Some 58% of these rentals offer parking, 43% have a fireplace, and almost 25% of them allow the traveller to bring their pet. kyero.com

LEGAL CORNER

Merry Christmas

December 2015

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com My parents are 80, not getting any younger and considering going back to the UK. There are7 points to consider before they leave Spain. Question: My mother and father need to move back to the UK due to very bad health, with my mother moving into a home immediately on her return. They still own a house and a bank account in Mojacar. Have you got any recommendations of things I should be thinking about from a legal point of while I am in Spain to help them organise their return? Answer: I would at least address the following matters: 1. Make sure their Spanish wills are in good order (there have been some legal changes lately that has made a visit to a solicitor in relation to the will necessary and if they have been ill and thinking of other things this will not have been a priority and may not have been done). Ask a solicitor if it complies with Directive 650/2012 that came into force on the 17th of August of 2015 and ask your solicitor if you can make better use of the new situation in relation to exemption rates for non residents created after the sense of E.C.J. of 3/9/2014. (European court of Justice of 3/9/2014.) Even if the will does comply, it may be time to reconsider

the clauses. If for example one of your parents is very ill it may not be convenient for the other partner to name him /her beneficiary etc. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers and make copies. 3. Make sure internet banking is set up on their Spanish bank account. 4. Your parents may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with their Spanish assets. 5. If they are resident and over 65 they are entitled to sell the property free of capital gains tax if they sell before they lose their resident status. Talk to your solicitor about capital gains tax. If they are going to sell the property try to do it without them losing their resident status before they sell for total exemption of CGT. 6. When you get back to England start working on an enduring power of attorney to be used in the UK. 7. Meet their solicitor in Spain before you leave, to make sure he is someone you will feel comfortable working with. These seven points are essential things that come to mind and that we always address in these situations but there could be more depending on their specific circumstances. A chat with your solicitors with all documentation available is recommendable. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Almería since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid and has offices in Mojacar and Almeria High Street.

MUNDI

Imagine you are planning to move from your current house to a new one, and want to donate your current home to your children. You may be better off selling the house and giving your children the money. Fiscal costs Under this scenario you have the following fiscal costs: • Your child must pay donation tax (Impuesto sobre donaciones, ISD). Depending on the circumstances and the region of Spain the house is in, you may benefit for a reduction. In Andalusia, the first 120.000 euros cash given to your children for them to buy their first home will have a 99% tax reduction if they are under 35 years of age. If your child is disabled, the amount eligible for the deduction increases up to 180.000 euros with no age limit. • You will have to pay IRPF (income tax) as if you had sold the house. The difference between the purchase price and the sale value of your home will be subjected to capital gains, even though you have given the house away. You are exempt from this if you are over 65. Best case scenario You won't be liable for IRPF capital gains in this scenario if you are over 65 years old and this is your primary residence, as the sale of your primary residence is exempt from capital gains, even if you aren't planning to buy a new home. The alternative : selling and donating the cash If you are moving to a new home worth the same or more than your current home, you may be better off selling the old one and donating the money to your children. In this scenario: • IRPF capital gains obtained in the selling of your primary residence may be exempt

from taxation when the total amount obtain from the sale is reinvested into the purchase of a new primary residence (or the repairs of one that will now be your primary home). If there is an outstanding mortgage on the house then capital gains is payable on the amount left once the capital of the mortgage has been paid off. • You can then donate the money from the sale to your children and let them purchase a house. The cost of donating the money will be similar to the cost of donating the asset (your old home). • ITP or IVA costs. The trouble is that your children will have to pay either ITP or IVA on the purchase of their new home. In summary If you donate your old home to your children and buy a new one, you will have to pay capital gains and donation tax on the value of the home. But under certain circumstances, if you sell your home and give them the cash, you can be exempt from capital gains. Your children then use part or all of the money to buy a new home, although they must then pay ITP / IVA on the house purchase. Therefore, this scenario is only worthwhile if the cost of ITP/IVA is less than the tax savings on the IRPF. Information given is for guidance purposes only. Your actual circumstances may vary. It may be remembered from last week that Antonio Poyato was doing the rounds of Almerían freak shows wearing false testicles. Manuela was searching for him, muttering, and promising to administer a minor but rather painful and unauthorised medical procedure. Loco Paco was barricaded in the basement of the town-hall with his pet Saharan Dung Beetle Benjy, and his five foot imaginary rodent friend called Bert. Rodriquez swiftly took control of the Remitroot plant and its stock of Whisky which he then supplied free of charge to the population of Alqueria. The result was a forgone conclusion. Every adult in the Pueblo was in a state of constant and deep intoxication. Rodriquez seized the moment and declared himself dictator. The constitution was torn up, which didn’t take a great deal of time as it was written on the back of a ‘fag’ packet. Rodriguez replaced it with a decree which simply consisted of two rule rules. Number one stated that Rodriquez was always right. Number two said that if Rodriquez was ever proved to be wrong then rule one should be implemented. When the evil Rodriquez was happy with his arrangements and the Alquerian Defence Force deployed on the streets the Remitroot Whisky supply was cut off. The population began to sober up. Now Alquerians can be charming people. Well, perhaps not actually charming. They can be

tolerably pleasant if the wind is in the right direction but when some eight hundred of them are recovering from a hangover s imult ane o u s ly then that is a place no one wants to be. The Alquerian Defence Force was charged with blocking all of the entry points into Alqueria, controlling the population and intelligence gathering. This proved a difficult as the force consisted of one person, Daft Pedro armed with a Zulu assegai which had no point as it had been used to open tins of sardines in Remitroot sauce, Pedro’s favourite food. Daft Pedro had joined the Defence Force by accident, he thought he was filling in a ‘spot the ball’ competition form. As the population emerged from their alcohol induced stupor they reacted in true Alquerian style by demanding more free Remitroot Whisky which Rodriquez withheld. The population was now totally under his control and the extent of his evil plan became evident. What will become of the people of Alqueria? Will our three itinerant heroes return to save the Village? We will have to wait until next year. Have a good Christmas and a happy New Year from all in Alqueria.

A Plethora of Parcels

Amazon’s claim to deliver to your door is a blatant untruth. What they should say is ‘We’ll deliver it sometime to somewhere nearish. The delivery man will call you when he gets there, but you must drop everything and rush to the appointed spot immediately, or he’ll go away again, and you will not get your parcel until Hell freezes over.’ Pete ordered 4 separate small items on the same day from Amazon, and in reply received 4 separate emails with 4 separate delivery dates. Fine, don’t question it; the fact that they all came from the same department clearly did not register with the electronic brain which oversees the Amazon delivery depot. Could a human brain have worked out that the same name, address and card number might signify the same person? Maybe, maybe not! We received Parcel 1 without a hitch and at a reasonably convenient hour. However, the courier of Parcel 2 wanted us to go to some distance away to claim our parcel. I dug my toes in, and after a bit of prevarication he agreed to our usual trysting place. Parcel 2 was signed for and we returned home. Some few minutes later the phone rang; ‘Hola, Meester Bighs. Paqueta from Amazon.’ I know that voice, I said to myself. The conversation resumed in Spanish; ‘We’ve just picked up a parcel from you. Are you sure it’s not the same parcel?’ ‘I’ll look.’ Much muttering and parcel-moving noises followed. ‘Yes, maybe it is.’ The phone clicked, and

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk he was gone. A few minutes later our neighbours arrived at our gate. ‘We’ve got a parcel for you from Amazon. We went to get a parcel for ourselves, and he asked us if we knew Meester Bighs, who lives in Limaria. When we said yes, he gave us this parcel.’ I took the proffered parcel with many thanks, but between all of us we weren’t quite sure – was this the same delivery man who had just got in a terrible muddle among the multitude of parcels in the back of his van, or was this a completely separate delivery man who simply hadn’t bothered to ring us and make us aware of the arrival of parcel 3? Whichever, the result was that we were in possession of 3 correct parcels, no matter how we had come by them. Of parcel 4 there is as yet no sign or sound. However, I expect it will turn up – somewhere, someday!

Roquetas de Mar has been Neolithic settlement, Almeria and artélica cultures. Its coast was visited by Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, although it was not until the eighteenth century when speaking of permanent settlements. When he began his career as a historical entity, it was incorporated as most Muslim places, by a defensive castle to the sea and a few cottages clustered around it. The town cited in existing documentation with the name "The Roquetas" then belonged to the municipality of Enix. Its economy is based on subsistence agriculture and fishing in a catch without much volume. The Parish Church was

built in 1757. The old Roquetas was a fishing village. The field was largely dependent on rainfall, rare in the area. Between Roquetas and Aguadulce grape cultivation in the area known as Los Parrales it is then given. Historic vestiges of its past, that are worth visiting, like the Tower of Roquetas, remember fortification that rose all along the maritime border in the fourteenth century are preserved. In this tower Castle or The Roquetas de Santa Ana, now restored as a cultural center arose. The transformation of the village occurs, as has happened throughout the Campo de Dalias or Poniente, throughout the twentieth century, first by exploiting both Salinas and later with the advent of intensive agriculture. The great economic deployment of Roquetas is due to the National Institute of Colonization, which led to the transformation of this area of dry land, going to have irrigated farms. This organization promoted the arrival of the first colonized by mid-century, coming mostly from the inside and the Granada coast. It was the first municipality in

Agriculture has been since then, the main source of wealth of the town, with a very varied production. Also of note, finally, the development of tourism, a sector that has become one of the fundamental pillars on which the economy of Roquetas de Mar. Its development started in 1964 sits in Aguadulce, when this population center is Center declared National Tourist Interest. Subsequently Roquetas and Playa Serena are built, and now is developing the Las Salinas, between Aguadulce and Roquetas, and the urbanization of Playa Serena Sur. Today, this town is the second largest in the province of Almeria and has a very important growth expectations, especially as it relates to tourism. www.aytoroquetas.org translate

A Cinderella Christmas by Holly Kingston

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

When I imagine living the social life of someone like Charmaine, it ’s all Champagne parties, Michelin restaurants and five-star hotels. The realit y is somewhat more pedestrian. Superficial. Talentless. These are the super egos who can manipulate the individual. Like Charmaine they are territorial and highly competitive. They may have an enviable lifestyle but behind all the glitz and glamour we have superficial characters, without real friends or genuine happiness. They trade off their good looks and media image, over-hyped, of course, pandering to the whims of their management teams and their bank balances and floating on the cloud of ambition at any price. Then there’s Ryan, every girls’ dream of male perfection and desire. He might be play-acting as Prince Charming, physically toned to make every girl squirm and squeal with delight and lust but is he true to his name? Of course not. He uses Lucy, who swoons whenever she sees him as a way to make Cinderella jealous. Lucy’s naivety and innocence is responsible for being star-struck by Charmaine Lewis, star of the pantomime with two singles in the top twenty, a cameo part in Doctor Who and engaged to premiership footballer Liam Phillips. And if that doesn’t impress you she also brags about having 700,000 followers on her Twitter account! She treats Lucy as her skivvy and Lucy seems to be perfectly happy being used as a doormat and a dog-walker because she is intoxicated with the feeling of stardom and fame. Lucy is completely bowled over by the most glamorous celebrity that she had ever met. She was infatuated by her swishy magnificence and grateful for Charmaine’s help in being given a comedy part in Cinderella as the back end of Daisy the Cow! Lucy Tilley’s claim to fame, after six years in the theatre was to have her name printed in the programme. She wears a hideous costume, air tight and claustrophobic. The exact opposite of glamour you might say. Her fame is like a lovely, shiny, contagious bug. Ryan had had seven top five UK singles, with a cameo appearance in Emmerdale as the hunky farmer boy. He was the man that Lucy admitted to being truly, madly, deeply infatuated with. After all, he was the most eligible bachelor in the UK. But what a jerk and eventually, after a bout of humiliation, Lucy’s bubble bursts and she sees through this thin coating of stardom and fame. Her disillusionment awakens her true understanding of celebrities and she becomes wiser and more

confident. Ben is Lucy’s bovine partner, the front bit. He gloats that Lucy gets to look at his ass! She sees plenty of that during performances. He has talent and has been working on writing a play which he also directs. His ambition takes him along a completely different route from Charmaine and Ryan. He is true to himself and modest even though he is very talented. I consider the reality of living Charmaine’s life. With her fake boyfriend, fake tan, fake hair, fake boobs and a noticeable lack of sincere friends. Living in the real world must be hard for these glamorous celebrities. Lucy has always felt that this celebrity bubble floats permanently on cloud 9 being pandered to and pampered. Botox, liposuction, silicone boobs are an integral part of being seductively desirable. It sums up Charmaine. She is fifty per cent silicone and one spritz of hairspray from being a serious fire risk. So, there you have it! Celebrity status. And what’s in it for Lucy? It’s a bit like being friends with a Jackie Collins novel. She makes my life feel more glamorous. Before you cringe, remember what I said about her naivety? She eventually sees through this act of pretence. I’m starting to get the feeling that Charmaine is full of crap as well as silicone and filler. Well done Lucy. Finally. Disillusionment kills her infatuation and brush with the world of glamour. Back to reality. A showdown with Charmaine, accused of playing the pathetic card to manipulate men becomes a moment of self-realization for Lucy. Charmaine has been jealous of Lucy’s natural beauty and goodness and wanted to eliminate any opposition. Her awe turns to feeling that she is a bit sad and lonely, her life as hollow as it could be. She musters up the courage to take central stage and to make something of her acting instead of hiding behind a costume or her tapdancing shoes. Perhaps there is a real Prince Charming waiting for her in the wings? Not a Ryan or Liam but a sensitive and kind man? That would make a perfect ending wouldn’t it? 2015 Tesla Model S 70D

The Tesla Model S keeps getting better. This 70D gets four-wheel drive and a slightly bigger battery pack, along with the 7.0 software updates What is it?: Is the Tesla Model S the most Darwinian car ever? It certainly seems to be evolving at a heck of a rate, because every time we jump into a Model S, even after the shortest of interludes, something always seems to have changed. This is because Tesla is consistently sending out software updates which rectify bugs and add features. It happens while owners are safely tucked up in bed and the car’s hooked up to wi-fi, with no need to give up your vehicle to a dealer and enter the scrum for a loan car. The latest update is version 7.0, which includes the much talkedabout optional Autopilot feature. This means the Model S will steer, accelerate, brake and park itself, feeding off a mix of radar, cameras and GPS data to ‘see’ where it’s going. The update also includes a new, cleaner-looking instrument display. However, it’s not just software updates; there have been hardware changes, too. Earlier this year Tesla introduced dualmotor four-wheel drive on the insanely quick – literally so with its ‘Insane’ mode that sets it to maximum attack – P85D. However, you can also have four-wheel drive on the entry-level model, which has a larger 70kWh battery than before for added range, and hence the new 70D designation. You can still buy a two-wheel-drive version, but instead of the single 377hp motor driving the rear wheels in the 70, the 70D has two 255bhp motors, with one mounted on each axle. When you include the limitations of the battery this equates to a total power figure of 324bhp, with 387lb ft available from the moment the motors begin to rotate. The range is actually boosted over that of the two-wheel-drive

37

Happy New Year

model thanks to the better combined efficiency of two motors, meaning the 70D will theoretically travel 275 miles between charges. Realistically that’s more like 150-200 miles, depending on ambient temperature, equipment usage, the type of driving you’re doing and your driving style. What's it like?: The 70D doesn’t feel insane like the P85D, nor will it send your vision as blurry, but it's still mildly unhinged. It’s a car that’ll hit 62mph from rest in 5.2sec, so it’s always going to feel quick, but as with anything that swaps a tank of fossil fuel for darting lithium ions in rows of battery cells, it’s the instant torque surge that makes it feel half as fast again. And with four-wheel drive it can get its power down with stunning efficiency, even on wet roads. Stamp hard on the accelerator and the tyres just dig in as the 70D swooshes you down the road with nothing more than a muted whine to indicate any effort on its part. We’ve already written extensively about the Autopilot’s features, but suffice to say it works well if you accept the slightly misleading name. The Model S isn’t suddenly transformed into a completely autonomous

car with the £2100 option (£2500 if you have the update retrofitted to your current car), and it’s really for use on motorways or dual carriageways, where the car can follow clear white lines demarcating the extremities of the lane. To get it working you simply set the adaptive cruise control to the desired speed, give the activation lever behind the steering wheel a double tap and boom, you're in tomorrow's world, today. It is a bizarre feeling watching the wheel twirling itself as you barrel along the motorway at 70mph, made even stranger by the confidence the system inspires that, rather oxymoronically, makes you relax and feel like this is quite the norm. The Tesla sticks rigidly to the centre of its lane – more so than the meandering systems we’ve experienced from Mercedes and BMW – and locks onto the car in front like a Tomahawk, tenaciously maintaining the desired distance whether that car picks up speed or stabs on its brakes. Unlike those other systems it doesn’t need you to keep your hands on the wheel, and if you indicate it will happily change lanes for you, too. The system may be good, but like any piece of tech in the early stages of development, it has issues. If it decides to jink left like an erratic puppy that’s seen a tabby cat, telling an officer of the law in the aftermath of any incident that you don’t know what happened because the car was driving itself won’t aid your defence - and quite rightly so. So what about the rest of the car? Well, it just gets better and better. The ride is much improved over the early cars we tried. It’s firm in a sporty way, but feels beautifully engineered to keep a decent level of compliance with no crashy moments to ruffle your feathers. For a big saloon that’s capable of transporting five people in comfort – or seven if you get a third row of seats fitted – it handles and steers beautifully. Yes, you can feel there’s considerable mass around you as you carve between apexes, but the body stays superbly controlled with next to no roll. The steering is quick and accurate with lovely weighting, even if it doesn’t exude oodles of feel. The airy cabin is also a great place in which to spend some time, and not just because of the endless fun you can have playing with that big iPad-style screen. The current generation car’s front seats fit like a tailored glove and mark a huge improvement over the narrow and unsupportive perches fitted to the early cars. And you can’t argue with the space on offer either, whether in the front, back, or in either the two generously proportioned boots. http://www.autocar.co.uk/

Too many cooks spoil Real Madrid broth It had to be seen to be believed. Not even in the early years of football, when teams played with five forwards, would you have found a similar tactical arrangement. If you had to describe how Real Madrid ended the match

against Villarreal, it would be as a 1-1-3-5. It was during stoppage time when Marcelo went off injured and Jesé came on. Benítez decided to move Gareth Bale into a theoretical left-back position, which was, in reality, to act as a second winger alongside Jesé, and that Sergio Ramos should muscle in between Karim Benzema and Cristiano, on the enemy

penalty spot, to see if he could land himself a goal.Complete chaos ensued, the late rejig as desperate as it was unsuccessful. The ‘Los Blancos’ coach held off on making any changes longer than he normally would, not sending Isco and Mateo Kovacic in until the 78th minute and, from then on, his team played with five forwards staggered down the centre of the pitch: Bale, James Rodríguez, Benzema, Isco and Cristiano and two attacking full-backs: Danilo and Marcelo. And even then, the equaliser still evaded them.In addition to recognising Villarreal’s merits, it is impossible to ignore a repeated tendency which is becoming endemic at Real Madrid. The BBC fail to make proper use of space and there is no clear zone of influence for each, although they continuously swap and change amongst themselves. They almost always play with their back to the opposing goal. They fall into the trap of any defence that push forward and anticipate well, just as happened yesterday. Offensively, ‘Los Blancos’ hardly ran in behind and were guilty of overusing static passing, which, together with their slow movement of the ball and lack of sharpness allowed Villarreal to gain ground and win every 50/50 going. Champions League draw: Arsenal face Barcelona

Arsenal will face holders Barcelona in the Champions League last 16. Chelsea have been drawn against Paris St-Germain for the third consecutive season, while Manchester City face Dynamo Kiev. Roma versus Real Madrid and Juventus, last year’s beaten finalists, against Bayern Munich are two of the standout matches in the draw. First legs are scheduled to take place on 16-17 and 23-24 February. Return legs are on 8-9 and 15-16 March. The winners of each group, including Chelsea and Manchester City, are at home in the second legs, while Arsenal will host their first leg. Barcelona v Arsenal is a repeat of the 2006 final, which the Spanish champions won 2-1 thanks to two late goals in Paris. PSG, who are 17 points clear at the top of the French league, knocked Chelsea out on away goals at this stage last season, while the Blues beat them on the same rule in the quarter-finals the previous year. Dynamo Kiev beat Manchester

City in the 2010-11 Europa League last 16, with striker Mario Balotelli sent off for the English side. The first leg in Kiev will be played in a stadium without any supporters present, as Dynamo Kiev were punished following racist attacks on fans during a group game against Chelsea. Punishment is ‘farcical’ - Man City fanzine editor The draw for the quarter-finals will be held on 18 March with the semi-final line-up drawn on 15 April. Anthony Joshua wins British title after knocking out Dillian Whyte • Joshua is the new British heavyweight champion • Olympic champion wins title vacated by Tyson Fury Anthony Joshua survived a brave, doomed challenge from Dillian Whyte – as well as an equally ill-considered ring invasion by a posse of the Brixton fighter’s fans at the end of the first round – to place himself firmly at the heart of the heavyweight division on Saturday night by winning the British title vacated by Tyson Fury. They will meet eventually, the Olympic champion and the world title-holder, and what a prospect that is. If Fury is still champion after his rematch with Wladimir Klitschko, he will do well to survive the power of a fighter who has reached superstardom while just coming off the nursery slopes of his sport. He could not have won more impressively. At one minutes 27 seconds of the seventh round, Joshua landed the sort of uppercut that would have decapitated a bull and which left Whyte in a motionless heap along the ropes near a neutral corner. As hard as Whyte tried – and he did have one-off successes here and there – his fate was sealed a lot earlier. “Well, well, well,” Joshua said in the ring as he clutched the Lonsdale Belt, still one

gossip Paris St-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti, 23, could move in the opposite direction to enable the French champions to sign Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, 22. (Mundo Deportivo - in Spanish) Swansea are monitoring Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli's dispute with the country's football federation, but former Brighton and Sunderland manager Gus Poyet remains the frontrunner for the Swans' vacant managerial post. (WalesOnline) Bayer Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling, 31, has suggested he may have played his last game for the club, increasing speculation that he

could be on his way to Liverpool in January. (Sky Sport Deutschland via Metro) Crystal Palace are leading the way in the chase for 24-year-old Juventus striker Simone Zaza, who is also wanted by Watford and Norwich. (Sun) Leicester are considering a £2m bid for AC Milan's Dutch anchorman Nigel de Jong, 31. (Sunday People) Ex-Manchester United defender Jaap Stam - currently an assistant coach at Dutch side Ajax- is keen to take his first step into management with Fulham. (Daily Mirror) Former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes says he has had several job offers since being sacked by Real Sociedad in November. (Sky Sports via FourFourTwo) BBC.com

of the most treasured prizes in boxing. “So this is the British heavyweight title. I had the strength to knock him out and I found a way. I broke him down.” While the overwhelming majority of the 17,500 paying customers were with Joshua, these guys, yelling throughout in this reporter’s right ear, were solidly with their man. Chris Eubank Jr should lose the appellation now. He looks like he could be every bit as good as his father – perhaps better – and earned a shot at Daniel Jacobs’ WBA middleweight belt with by far the most impressive performance of his 21-fight career to stop the stubborn Irish puncher Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan after seven one-sided rounds. O’Sullivan showed no respect for Eubank’s power in the first round, clowning with his hands behind his back, grinning and showboating, but what

happened thereafter was an education for all of us. The Irish smile evaporated in the second round on the end of a crunching uppercut, followed by an attack that went pretty much all the way to the bell. From there to the end – apart from brief parity in the third – O’Sullivan stayed on his feet but absorbed a quite brutal beating until his co-trainer Steve Collins pulled him out. “That was most satisfying,” Junior said. Unlike his father, he does rock-solid understatement. http://www.theguardian.com/
