Three-quarters of at-risk drinkers in Spain unaware of dangers of alcohol

February 2016

One in every six Spaniards over the age of 18 consumes worrying amounts of booze

Around one in six Spaniards over the age of 18, or 17.1% of the population, drinks too much. That’s according to a survey conducted by Danish pharmaceuticals company Lundbeck, and which was presented on Wednesday in Madrid by a panel of experts. “Spain is always among the countries with the highest alcohol consumption, along with France, Portugal, and Italy,” said Julio Bobes, president of Socidrogalcohol, a research organization into alcohol and drug dependence. “But just as important as the data, or more so, is the trend,” added Antoni Gual of Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic. Gual highlighted how when a comparison is made between respondents’ understanding of the risk they face (4,250 interviews throughout Spain with a 5% margin of error) there is a clear imbalance: compared to that 17.1%, who – according to what they say they consume – is at risk, only 1.3% say they drink too much. That’s to say, 76% of people who drink too much believe their intake levels are normal. Calculations about who is a risk drinker are measured in two ways, based on the type of drinker: daily consumers, as is typical in Mediterranean countries; or weekend boozers – characterized by the so-called binge drinking common in the United Kingdom. Each glass of beer, wine, or shot counts as a unit of alcohol (spirits with mixers equal two units). A man is considered at risk if his intake is four or more units of alcohol per day, or five or more during a binge. In the case of women, who generally weigh less than men, the limits fall to two and four, respectively. Gual highlighted that the survey also shows how one in five Spaniards are teetotal, contradicting the widely held belief that “everybody drinks: in fact only 23.5% of people in Spain drink more than twice a week.” Younger people drink more “Spain is The survey shows that in general, 18- to 25-yearalways among olds drink the most, and men more than women: the countries 19.6% and 14.5%, respectively, are considered at with the risk; conversely, 16.6% of men were teetotal, a figure highest alcohol that rose to 27% for women. Bobes highlighted the consumption, dangers of drinking at an early age, saying that the along with brain was still developing until our mid-twenties and France, that alcohol interferes with the process. Portugal and Italy” Also at the presentation was José Ángel Arbesú of the

S p ani s h

Association of Primary Care Medics (Semergen), who underscored the problem Spanish society has in recognizing that alcoholism is a danger to health, pointing out that 12.4% of respondents to the Lundbeck survey believed that alcoholism is a vice, while 33.7% described it as an illness that starts with a vice. This belief delays alcoholics from seeking help, when “the most important thing is to be aware that there is a health problem,” said Arbesú, noting that around 40,000 people die each year in Spain from alcohol-related illnesses: “There are up to 64 illnesses directly and indirectly related to alcohol, such as hepatitis, cancer, and mental illness” Javier Zarco of the Spanish Society for Family and Community Medicine (Semfyc) said that Spain’s general practitioners are trained to deal with people with alcohol problems, noting that the survey reflected the public’s confidence in their doctors, with most people saying this would be their first port of call when seeking help, followed by associations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and specialist treatment centers. Coming a distant fourth were psychologists, although younger respondents said they were more likely to seek help from this source. “This is an important point because there aren’t many psychologists working in local health centers,” he warned. The panel of experts at the Lundbeck presentation called for legislation to regulate alcohol consumption, with Bobes accusing politicians of failing to act. Gual called for laws not only to regulate price and access to alcohol, but for controls on advertising: “Each day, the industry spends a million euros promoting alcoholic drinks. This is not ethical.” elpais.com

Sir Terry Wogan: Condolence books open for broadcaster

Books of condolence have opened for Sir Terry Wogan, as his breakfast show successor Chris Evans paid tribute on air to “radio’s Eric Morecambe”. The veteran broadcaster died of cancer on Sunday at the age of 77. The books, in Sir Terry’s birthplace of Limerick, will allow people to mark the passing of “a true son of Limerick”, the city’s mayor Liam Galvin said. Evans told listeners of the BBC Radio 2 show that made Sir Terry’s name: “He was the absolute governor.” In a career spanning 50 years, Sir Terry hosted TV chat shows, fronted the Eurovision Song Contest and was the face of Children in Need, while his long-running Radio 2 breakfast show regularly drew millions of listeners. At the start of his breakfast show on Monday, Evans said: “He was radio’s Eric Morecambe, Ronnie Barker, he was our Captain Mainwaring, our Basil Fawlty but he made us laugh every day for two hours and for over 30 years. “All unscripted, all ad lib, always supremely assured, unwaveringly confident. “And do you know why? Because he never took any of this seriously, least of all himself. He was the butt of most of his jokes. “Laugh and the world laughs with you, sure, but Terry knew that if you go one better, and laugh at yourself then

you’re really onto something.” Evans described Sir Terry as his “radio dad” and said that Radio 2 was “in disbelief and shock”. “He taught me so much about being on the radio and not being on the radio,” added Evans. “He was the absolute governor, everybody knows that.” Sir Terry died surrounded by his family “after a short but brave battle with cancer”, a statement released by his family said. He leaves his wife, Helen, and their three children. The couple also had a daughter who died in infancy. An online book of condolences will be hosted on Limerick’s official website www.limerick.ie with separate books of condolence at council buildings in Dooradoyle and Merchants Quay opening on Monday morning. The city’s mayor said: “Despite his fame and the fact that he was based in the UK throughout much of his career, Sir Terry often returned home to Limerick and never missed an opportunity on radio or TV to speak about his Limerick roots. “The council honoured him with the title of Freeman of Limerick in 2007, which I know was a title that meant very much to him and his family.” President of the Irish Republic Michael D Higgins has said Sir Terry was “always proud of his origins in Limerick”, and returned frequently to his native country. Spain's Princess Cristina loses bid to avoid fraud trial

Spain's Princess Cristina has lost an appeal to have the two charges she faces of tax evasion dropped. A court in Palma ruled that the 50-year-old sister of King Felipe must stand trial in a case involving her husband's business dealings. If found guilty, she could face a maximum of eight years in jail. Princess Cristina has denied knowledge of the alleged embezzlement scam that also involves her husband and 16 other defendants. They all deny the charges. The case was launched in 2010 and has become highly symbolic of

perceived corruption among Spain's elites, including the royal family Last year, King Felipe stripped his sister and her husband Inaki Urdangarin of their titles, the Duke and Duchess of Palma de Mallorca. Princess Cristina now lives in Switzerland, but remains the sixth in line to the Spanish throne and is the first member of the royal family to go on trial. The princess’s lawyers argued that as public prosecutors had refused to press charges against her, the counts should be dismissed. But the three judges agreed to

continue with the prosecution using the evidence filed by the the anticorruption group, Manos Limpias, meaning “Clean Hands”. The charges relate to the real estate company Aizoon that she owned with her husband, a former Olympic handball medallist. She is accused of making personal use of Aizoon funds for paying for clothes and dance lessons for the couple’s children as well as work on the couple’s Barcelona mansion, which reduced the firm’s taxable profits. Her husband is alleged to have used the non-profit Noos Institute

sports foundation he ran as a vehicle to win falsely inflated contracts from regional government bodies, before channelling the money to personal accounts via tax havens. Noos is alleged to have received more than €6m (£4.4m; $6.5m) of public money, most of it from the Balearic Islands and Valencia regional governments. If found guilty, Mr Urdangarin could face 19 years and six months in jail. Hearings into the case will resume next month in Palma. BBC

Last year saw major improvements in labor market, although jobless rate still at 20.9% The number of jobless fell by a record 678,200 to 4,779,500 in 2015, the greatest annual drop in Spanish history. Such figures have not been seen since late 2010. Overall data show that 2015 was generally a good year for the job market, although the unemployment rate is still 20.9%, according to the workforce sample study Active Population Survey (EPA), released on Thursday. Employment figures for 2015 are also good, the survey shows. The year ended with an additional 525,100 people in work, for a total of just over 18 million individuals in employment, a 3% rise from late 2014. The last time employment

figures rose at a similar rate was in 2006, before the start of the economic crisis. Two days ago, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos advanced that the drop in unemployment would be “the most intense in our country’s history.” Broken down by sectors, the majority of hirings in the last quarter were in agriculture (70,200) and services (54,900), while jobs were lost in industry (55,500) and construction (24,100). Employment grew in all sectors in annual terms. In 2015, the number of households with all members out of a job fell 11.9% from 2014, to reach 1,556,600 homes. elpais.com

Rock star David Bowie leaves $100m in will

Rock star David Bowie left an estate valued at about $100m (£70m), according to his will which has been filed in New York. Half will go to his widow, Iman, along with the home they shared in New York. The rest is shared between his son and daughter. It was also revealed that Bowie had requested that his ashes be scattered in Bali in a Buddhist ritual. The singer died of cancer on 10 January, aged 69. The will was filed in a Manhattan court on Friday under Bowie’s legal name, David Robert Jones. The star’s personal assistant, Corinne Schwab, was left $2m and another $1m went to a former nanny, Marion Skene. Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, and daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones, both received 25% of the estate. Alexandria was also left a home in upstate New York. In the will, written in 2004, Bowie asked that he be cremated in Bali but if that was “not practical”, then his ashes be scattered there anyway “in accordance with the Buddhist rituals”. Bowie’s body was cremated on 12 January in New Jersey, according to a death certificate filed with the will. Buddhist rituals after cremation • Practices vary according to the

different Buddhism traditions, and the choice of rituals is regarded as a highly personal matter •A fter a cremation, relatives of the deceased often choose to enshrine the ashes in a columbarium or pagoda, bury them, or scatter them at sea

Lego reveals new disabled figures after an online campaign

Lego has revealed its first young disabled mini-figure, after a campaign was launched last year.

The #ToyLikeMe group had suggested the company was “pandering to disability stereotypes” because its only character to use a wheelchair was an elderly man. The new character is one of many being introduced. Other major toy manufacturers are now being urged to follow in the footsteps of the Danish firm. The #ToyLikeMe campaign was launched to create more toys to represent the 770,000 disabled children in the UK. The group’s petition received more than 20,000 signatures urging Lego to create toys that show disabilities amongst children. “We want disabilities taken out of the hospital and into a more fun setting,” says Rebecca Atkinson, who started the campaign. The mother of two is partially

deaf and has tunnel vision. Toys with disabilities The new character is a young beanie-hat wearing wheelchair user. He even has his own assistance dog. It was first spotted at the Nuremberg toy fair. The disabled character is part of the toy company’s City range, which will go on sale in June. “We are beyond happy right now,” says Rebecca. “Lego have just rocked our brick-built world and made 150 million disabled kids, their mums, dads, pet dogs and hamsters very very happy. “We’re all conga-ing up and down the street chucking coloured bricks like confetti. “But on a serious note, this move by Lego is massive in terms of ending cultural marginalisation, it will speak volumes to children, disabled or otherwise, the world over.” BBC

EasyJet launches Amsterdam-Tenerife flights as island seeks to capture more Dutch tourists

LOW-COST airline routes between Spain and northern Europe are on the increase as tourism figures pick up, and the latest new flight opened links Tenerife South with Amsterdam. A new EasyJet route due to launch in December will fly twice a week until May, but if it turns out to be a success, will continue through the summer and possibly beyond. President of the Canary Islands' regional government, or Cabildo, Carlos Alonso says Dutch holidaymakers have risen in number by 7% in the past year, largely due to promotional activities Tenerife in particular has been carrying out in The Netherlands. In fact, the Dutch have long been a huge market for Tenerife, with 110,000 of them visiting the island in the first nine months of 2015. At present, flights from Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Groningen are run by Ryanair, Thomas Cook, Corendon, Transavia, and Arke Fly, the latter a branch of TUI, meaning EasyJet will offer a further choice for those seeking to book trips at minimal cost. The Netherlands itself has also been investigating Tenerife in order to promote it to residents of the North Sea nation – De Telegraaf, which has over 1.5 million readers, and the lifestyle and fashion magazine

Nouveau both visited the Canaries and published special features on Tenerife. Travel and trends website YourLittleBlackBook.me, which has over 41,000 fans on Facebook, has taken a recent trip to the island. These media went to Tenerife as part of a programme run by the island's tourist board and the advertising agency O2, and included trips to La Laguna with a cycle tour of the old town, La Orotava, and Puerto de la Cruz, plus a wine-tasting session at La Casa del Vino, a star-gazing excursion and a whale-spotting outing. “Dutch tourists seek active holidays, where they can practice outdoor sports and enjoy excursions in a mild year-round climate,” says the island's tourism councillor Alberto Bernabé. “They like to get to know the local culture and cuisine and try out new things, so the media travel programme sought to showcase attractions that we knew readers of their publication – potential tourists – would enjoy the best.” Tenerife's next promotional drive will take its holiday industry figureheads to the Masters of Luxury high-endmarket trade fair held in Amsterdam between December 10 and 14. http://www.thinkspain.com/

Almond Trees

The almond tree is one of the first trees to flower at the close of winter and in February large parts of Spain are dressed with light and colour. The "Almendros" (almond trees) are in bloom, a fact that marks the beginning of spring. It lasts approximately 3 weeks, and is a spectacular sight. The almond tree (Prunus dulcis) is a small to medium sized deciduous fruit tree within the rose (Rosaceae) family, along with other tree fruits such as peaches, apples, pears, plums, cherries, and apricots. Within the genus, almonds are most closely related to the peach, and hybrids of the two are used as rootstocks. Almonds are native to the Mediterranean region of the Middle East, explaining their requirement of mild winters and long dry summers. Almonds were domesticated at least by 3000 BC, and perhaps much earlier since wild almonds have been unearthed in Greek archeological sites dating to 8000 BC. The almond was spread along the shores of the Mediterranean in northern Africa and southern Europe by Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. In Greek mythology the almond tree is represented by the beautiful princess Phyllis. Left at the altar on her wedding day, Phyllis waited for years before finally perishing of a broken heart. In sympathy, the gods transformed her into an almond tree, as a symbol of hope. When Phyllis' fiancee returned to find her as a leafless, flowerless tree, he embraced it and the tree burst into bloom.

Flowering & Fruiting

Almond flowers are nearly identical to peach and other Prunus flowers, but are more fragrant and tend to be either light pink or white. The almond tree is not selfpollinating and must be cross-pollinated. Because

of this, honeybees or other pollinators are essential to fruit production. However, there is a lot of work being done on developing a prolific nut producing, self-fertile almond. In the meantime, it is possible to buy grafted compatible varieties of almonds to reduce the need for two trees. The soft, fuzzy almond tree fruit is called a drupe. Prior to "ripening", the hull dries and splits, revealing the nut, within which lies the kernel that we love to eat. There are two types of almonds trees, thebitter, used for almond essence, and the sweet almond tree, grown in home gardens and perfectfor eating. The bitter almond is a cousin to the sweet almond, but contains traces of lethal prussic acid (Hydrogen cyanide) in its raw state. The toxicity is destroyed by heat, so it is safe to eat any dish prepared with bitter almonds, but unprocessed bitter almonds can be lethal mobile: 699 909 737 The white blossoms office: produce sweet almonds while the pink ones 950 398 146 produce the bitter E-mail: solosat@gmail.com variety. http://www.spain-info. co.uk/

How did Valentine's Day start?

Valentine's Day is a very old tradition, thought to have originated from a Roman festival. The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of Februar y, officially the start of their springtime. It's thought that as part of the celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They'd be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they'd get married.

Sit by a window

It might feel like the last thing you want to do, but going for a brisk walk outside in the sun will not only brighten your mood, it will invigorate you as well. “Studies have revealed that workers are less likely to suffer mid-day fatigue on days when they exercised during lunch, helping them sustain higher energy levels and concentration,” says Peterson. Keep in mind that a long workout isn’t crucial to get the full effect; a short walk or going up a few flights of stairs will help just as well.

“Studies have shown that those who experienced daylight were significantly more alert than subjects who were exposed to only artificial light,” explains Peterson. Try to sit next to a window for a few hours in the afternoon in order to combat exhaustion. uk.style.yahoo.com

Sniff citrus

Talk to coworkers

Scent is a powerful force when it comes to how we feel. Scents like lavender can help your drift off to sleep, while eucalyptus helps to calm nerves, for instance. But if you’re looking to rev up your day, sniff something citrus-y. Whether you add lemon to your water or rub on a citrus-scented perfume, either way you’ll immediately feel more mentally stimulated.

Put on upbeat music

You put on your best pump-up music when you need energy at the gym, so why not do the same in the office? Throw on your favorite tunes to help energize yourself for the rest of the afternoon.

Chew gum

Pop a strongly flavored stick of gum in your mouth to jump-start your afternoon. You may be surprised how effective a spicy stick of gum is when it comes to waking you up!

Spritz on a face mist

Sometimes nothing but a cold blast of water to the face will wake you. So, try an instant pick-me-up facial spray to not only hydrate and refresh skin, but also to pep you up as well.

It’s important to take occasional breaks in order to stay productive. Instead of just emailing a coworker about an upcoming project, walk over to his or her desk for a quick chat. Not only will stretching your legs help rev you up, engaging in conversation will as well.

Sip water

Staying hydrated has its obvious perks (hello, clear skin), but it’s important to keep in mind that there are equally as many negative effects if you don’t stay hydrated — one of them being fatigue. Be sure to sip water throughout the day to avoid feeling sleepy.

Eat a light lunch

Food comas are a real issue when it comes to a drop in energy levels postmeal. Avoid the fatigue by not eating a heavy lunch during the work week. Taz Bhatia MD, integrative health expert and author of What Doctors Eat, advises to stay away from lunches rich in carbs since they slow down

Gordon Goody passed away aged 86

Gordon Goody - the mastermind behind the notorious Great Train Robbery - has died aged 86. The former convict passed away at his home in Mojácar, southern Spain, where he had lived for more than 30 years following his early release from prison, according to local media. It is believed he died this morning, surrounded by his friends. Goody was one of the last surviving member of the 15-strong gang that stole a staggering £2.6million from a Royal Mail train travelling from Glasgow to London in August 1963. He was the suspected mastermind of the infamous heist and the deputy of gang leader Bruce Reynolds. The robber - who was arrested in a hotel with his girlfriend, a former Miss Great Britain, shortly after the crime - was released early from prison in 1975. He had served only 12 years of his 30-year sentence. During his time behind bars, Goody learned Spanish. He also suffered the loss of his beloved pet Alsatian ‘Sheena’, who reportedly could not bear to be without her master and eventually died. Once freed, Goody moved to Spain, and four years later, set up a beach bar called Kon Tiki. In recent years, he had been suffering from emphysema - a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs - and, at times, struggled to breathe. He relied on an oxygen mask, although reports a

‘World’s best chef’ Benoit Violier dies aged 44

Chef Benoit Violier, whose Swiss restaurant was named the best in the world in December, has been found dead at his home. Mr Violier, 44, ran the Restaurant de l'Hotel de Ville in Crissier, near the city of Lausanne. It earned three Michelin stars and came top in France's La Liste ranking of the world's 1,000 best eateries. Swiss police said Mr Violier, who was born in France, appeared to have shot himself. The Swiss news website 24 Heures said (in French) that Mr Violier had been due to attend the launch of the new Michelin guide in Paris on Monday. His death comes only months after that of Philippe Rochat, his mentor and predecessor at the Restaurant de l'Hotel de Ville, who fell ill while cycling. Having worked at the restaurant since 1996, Mr Violier took it over along with his wife Brigitte in 2012, later obtaining Swiss nationality. A keen hunter, he was known for signature dishes including game and produced a weighty book on game meat last year. The restaurant's menus ranged from a quick lunch menu at 195 Swiss francs ($191; £134) to a "discovery" set menu priced at 380 Swiss francs. French Swiss Chef Benoit Violier of the restaurant Hotel de Ville in Crissier, Switzerland, poses with his trophy for the best restaurant of the World during the award ceremony of Image copyrightAP Benoit Violier's work was recognised by the French government last year According to a biography on his website, Mr Violier grew up in a family of seven children in the town of Saintes, in western France. His passion for gastronomy was

heart attack was the cause of his death. Goody shared his home in the Spanish countryside with his long-term girlfriend, Maria, and their five rescue dogs. Mojacar town hall today described the former gangster as a ‘complete gentleman’, The Local reports. In a statement, it said: “All who knew him were struck by his friendliness, his love for his friends and family and the many pets he rescued from the street. “He was a complete gentleman far removed from the image that those who didn’t know him might have had from those difficult years that marked a large part of his life. “We will always remember his smile and his big heart that was always open to those around him.” A council official added that Goody ‘passed away at around six (am) surrounded by his friends’. Born Douglas Goody in 1930, the former criminal was a hairdresser who lived with his mother and girlfriend in a small house in Putney, the BBC reports. He apparently had two tattoos on his arms, reading ‘Hello Ireland’ and ‘Dear Mother’. It is widely believed that Goody was the mastermind behind the Great Train Robbery after meeting with the informant who gave the gang of criminals’ insider information. Fifty years after the heist, he revealed the identity of the inside man, dubbed the ‘Ulsterman’ in a TV documentary. He revealed that the informant was 43-year-old postal worker Patrick McKenna, from Belfast, whom

inspired by his mother from a young age, while he learned about wine, cognac and hunting from his father. He moved to Paris in 1991, training with top French chefs including Joel Robuchon and Benoit Guichard. He said his time there taught him "rigour, discipline and the art of the beautiful gesture". In an indication of the standards he held himself to, he said: "Nothing is ever definitive, everything must be repeated every day." Mr Violier trained with some of the top French chefs in Paris, before winning acclaim in Crissier Accepting the La Liste award, given by France's foreign ministry as an alternative to the World's 50 Best Restaurants prize, Mr Violier said it was an "exceptional" honour that would "only motivate our team more". Swiss chef Fredy Girardet, who also received three Michelin stars, told 24 Heures that he was "dumbfounded" by news of Mr Violier's death. "He was a brilliant man," he said. "Such talent, and an amazing capacity for work. He was so kind, with so many qualities. He gave the impression of being perfect." French chef Pierre Gagnaire tweeted: "My thoughts go out to Benoit Violier's family. Very sad news about an extremely talented chef." Paul Bocuse, another leading French chef, described Mr Violier as a "great man and a gigantic talent". The Michelin Guide said he had "immense talent" and its thoughts were with Mr Violier's family and colleagues. Bbc.com

he met via a third party. McKenna who told the gang to change the planned robbery date because the next day’s train would be carrying more cash, Goody claimed in the documentary, A Tale Of Two Thieves. “He was absolutely essential to the robbery,” he said. “It simply would not have happened without him. The information that he provided was spot-on.” McKenna, who was living in Islington, north London at the time, died with just £3,000 in his bank account The Great Train Robbery remains one of the most notorious crimes in British history, with the bulk of the money stolen never recovered by officials. During the crime, the gang of robbers tampered with line signals before raiding the train and escaping with the equivalent of more than £40million today, all in £5 and £1 notes. In 2013, Goody, who grew up in Putney, west London, spoke publicly for the first time about his role in the robbery in an exclusive interview with the Mirror. He told of how the gang pulled off the August 8, 1963, heist in Buckinghamshire, and claimed that the police had to fabricate evidence to get him sent to prison. The Great Train Robbery netted Goody and his gang the equivalent of more than £40million today. Mirror.co.uk

accomplishment a ‘game changer’ in November, which opens the door to lower costs in space travel and his vision of people living and working in space. ‘I’m a huge fan of rocket-powered vertical landing,’ he wrote on the Blue Origin website. ‘Why? Because to achieve our vision of millions of people living and working in space we will need to build very large rocket boosters. And the vertical landing architecture scales extraordinarily well. ‘When you do a vertical landing, you’re solving the classic inverted pendulum problem,

and the inverted pendulum problem gets a bit easier as the pendulum gets a bit bigger.’ Mr Bezos, who founded online giant Amazon and also owns The Washington Post newspaper, said on Saturday that Blue Origin has solved the problem of balancing to keep the rocket in an upright position as it lands. Elon Musk’s SpaceX in December managed a similar feat for the first time with its Falcon 9 rocket in Florida, after it blasted off on a satellitedelivery mission. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

We have lift-off... and landing! Jeff Bezos's reusable Blue Origin rocket successfully launches before coming back to land for a second time • Space firm Blue Origin successfully launched its rocket for the second time • It was created by internet entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, who founded Amazon • The rocket hit an altitude of 333,000 feet before 'gently' returning to Earth • Launch is a 'game changer' which opens the door to cheaper space travel Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ space firm has successfully tested a re-usable rocket for the second time, signalling a dramatic step forward in the development of cheaper space travel. Blue Origin, the company created by Mr Bezos, successfully launched the New Shepard rocket for the first time in November. And they have repeated the take-off successfully just two months later, with the rocket hitting an altitude of 333,582 feet (63 miles) before ‘gently’ returning to Earth in west Texas on Friday morning. A video released by Blue Origin showed the launch and landing from the Texas site on January 22, with the rocket slowed to three miles per hour (five kilometres per hour) on its descent with the assistance of parachutes. Could the MOON make this weekend’s storms more destructive? Full moon will cause tides to be higher

• Higher than normal tides from the full moon could cause serious flooding • Full moon tides will be worsened by hurricane-like wind speed from storm • This also happened in 2003 during PDII storm, bringing 8-9 feet of flooding

This weekend’s blizzard has already been dubbed a ‘life and death’ storm as it begins to slam the East Coast – now, a meteorologist is saying the approaching full moon could make matters worse. When a full moon comes around, the increased gravitational pull can cause tidal extremes, from very high to very low. The combination of hurricane-

Hotel For Gamers Opens In Amsterdam European gamers might be interested to know that a new hotel has opened in Amsterdam that has been specifically designed to accommodate the needs of gamers and is aptly named The Arcade Hotel. All the hotel rooms have been kitted out with retro consoles and games at no extra cost to residents and there is also a range of different handheld consoles available that can be used whilst in the lobby bar. Matt Martin from the 24/7Website has been able to stay in the Arcade Hotel during the launch weekend and explains more about what you can

expect from the gaming environment which has been created in the hotel by owner Daniel Salmanovich who explains : Remodelling this hotel into a special place for people who love gaming. I wanted to create a place where travellers and gamers feel like they are staying at a friends home. Matt Martin from 24/7 writes : The Arcade Hotel sits just far enough away from the cheap madness of Amsterdam’s obvious tourist spots in the up and coming De Pijp area, and it aims to become a welcome retreat for like-minded gamers looking for some familiar RnR after a day exploring the city. http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/

level wind speeds from winter storm Jonas and the full moon high tides could make for extreme coastal flooding. According to Gizmodo, this weekend’s ominous conditions aren’t just a case of ‘blame it on the moon,’ superstitions. Tides ebb and flow as a result of the gravitational pull between the Sun, Moon, and the Earth. When all three entities are aligned, with the Earth in the middle, a full moon occurs, creating an extra-strong gravitational pull, and thus, the

month’s extreme tides. Under normal conditions, Gizmodo writes, the full moon high tides are generally one to two feet higher than usual, and these tidal changes are of little consequence. But, with winter storm Jonas bringing high winds, which are expected to hit up to 40 to 50 miles per hour along the Delaware and Jersey shores, the effects of this full moon could be more serious. Spain Resale House Prices Register Smallest Decline Since 2007 As a result, we ended 2015 with The average price of second hand

homes in Spain fell by -0.8% in 2015, according to data from the “Housing in 2015” report prepared by property portal fotocasa, which placed its value at 1,619 euros/m2 compared with the figure of 1,632 euros/m2 recorded at the end of 2014. This year-on-year decline of -0.8% registered in 2015 is almost five points lower than the decline registered at the end of 2014 (-5.7%) and is the most minor decline recorded since 2007, when the variation was -1.1%. According to Beatriz Toribio, head of research for the portal, their data shows that the price of housing in Spain is stabilising. She said that in 2015 the double digit declines registered in recent years were left behind, and that prices have begun to climb continuously in certain areas “because after losing up to 45.2% of its value, the falling cost of housing has coincided with a re-opening of mortgage credit, which was essential in order for the sector to breathe again.

more optimistic forecasts for the sector”. The price of housing in Spain has accumulated a decline of -45.2%, on average, since it reached its historical peak in April 2007 with a value of 2,952 euros/m2. The regions which have registered even greater accumulated declines since their maximum levels are: La Rioja (-55.1%); Castilla-La Mancha (-52.6%); Navarra (-52,5%); Aragón (-52%); Murcia (-49.9%) and Valencia (-48.3%). In contrast, the regions which recorded the lowest accumulated declines in their housing prices are: Galicia (-31.5%); the Balearic Islands (-33.1%); Castilla y León (-36.3%) and the Basque Country (-37.3%). A total of 5 regions recorded price increases at the end of 2015, the greatest being the increase registered for the Balearic Islands (+3.3%), followed by La Rioja (+2.4%), Madrid (+1.4%), Andalucía and Galicia (both +0.7%). kyero.com

10 EASY TIPS ARCHITECTS USE TO DETECT UNDECLARED OR ILLEGAL EXTENSIONS

If you are purchasing a property in Spain it’s essential to; A - make sure the property doesn’t have an illegal extension or pool and B - is properly described in the Title Deeds with it’s complete build size registered in the Land Registry. Often a solicitor will base their conveyancing on the property’s dimensions via official bodies in charge of council tax/property taxes, but more often than not they are not actually up to date. Therefore it’s very important to follow these tips: 1- Ask the Vendors if (and when) they’ve had any extension or pool done. 2- Ask if they applied for licences and make sure these licences are correct.

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com

Question My brother and myself (residents in Málaga) have received inheritance payments from my father of 200,000€ and 150,000€ for my brother. Our solicitor says my brother has no tax to pay but that I have a bill of 28,000€. This does not seem fair .Surely this is not correct? Answer I am afraid it is. As you are both residents in Andalucia your solicitor is claiming for your brother an extra exemption (please note that each region of Spain has created extra exemptions above the general national ones) that says that if a group 1 or 2 heir (which is spouse and direct descendants) receives an estate of less than one hundred and seventy five thousand euro it is exempt. Unfortunately

as you have received more than this amount you are not entitled to the exemption and on the general system you are only allowed sixteen thousand euro allowance with the result above. Remember that in Spain the system is very different than in the UK. In Spain it is not the estate that pays the tax. It is each beneficiary that pays tax (depending on various factors like where in Spain he lives, relationship with the deceased etc. ), which makes distribution of the estate very important for the resulting total tax bill. This is why it is so important that your will is drawn up by someone that knows what he /she is doing, as these matters are very simple and can easily be foreseen when the will is drawn up. IF YOU HAVE WORKED ABROAD AND IN SPAIN YOU MAY HAVE RIGHT TO A STATE PENSION IN SPAIN FOR THE PERIOD WORKED IN THIS COUNTRY. If you've worked in several European countries, you may have accumulated pension rights in each of them. The requirements for the pension right depends upon the rules of the country. The most important requirements are the retirement age and the period of insurance although there may be others. You can only receive your pension from the country where you now live (or last worked) once you have reached the legal retirement age in that country. If you have accumulated pension rights in other countries, you will only receive those parts of your pension once you have reached the legal retirement age in those countries. If you have been covered for less than a year in one country, a special rule may apply, as some European countries do not provide a pension for short periods: your months of insurance or residence in the country where you worked for a short time will not be lost but taken into account in the calculation of your pension by the countries where you worked longer.

Italy has claimed €227 million in unpaid tax from Google from between 2009 and 2013. Google paid €2.2 million of tax in Italy in 2014 on revenues of €54.4 million generated in the country, Reuters reported. Google is paying back 3 per cent in tax, or £130 million, to the UK tax authority in a deal slammed by MEPs as "not fair competition". “It looks like Osborne’s ‘major success’ over Google has made the UK the laughing stock of Europe,” said Wes Streeting, Labour MP for Ilford North. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition, fired four questions about the Google deal at David Cameron during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, including one from a working man in his thirties called Geoff. “Geoff speaks for millions of people when he says to me, ‘Is there a scheme that I can join that has the same rate of tax as Google?’” Corbyn said. Cameron deflected the question, choosing to blame Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling for

Log-on-Tommy Cheapest Logs In Town

Google’s low rate of tax. Corbyn reminded Cameron that he is the Prime Minister currently responsible for addressing taxes. Eva Joly, vice chair of the Special European Parliamentary Committee on Tax Rulings, said that the deal looked like the UK wanted to become a tax haven. On Wednesday, Margrethe Vestager, the European Competition Commissioner, said she would investigate Google’s tax arrangements if someone complained about them. The SNP swiftly released a statement to say that a letter was on its way. The European Commission is due to publish plans last Wednesday that may force Google and other multi-national companies to pay more in tax. http://www.independent.co.uk/

A Novia for Paco

As may be recalled the illustrious Loco Paco had a ‘crush’ on the lovely Manuela, in fact our little deranged hero was in love, unrequited as it turned out. Paco wasn’t one to brood however, he soon moved on, whether this was a measure of strength of character or the fact that his attention span was akin to that of a not too bright goldfish is difficult to tell. Paco’s ‘moving on’ involved starting a collection of ear wax from Abyssinian Goat Shirling champions of the twentieth century. A hobby which set him apart from his peers and also anyone with an elementary knowledge of hygiene. Paco passed his days surrounded by photographs from the Goat Shirling hall of fame. He carefully catalogued rows of phials containing the disgusting lumps of ear discharge. Just where he sourced the raw material is a mystery and perhaps it is best kept that way. Paco started to worry people, his behaviour became increasingly odd which is saying something considering he was a loony long before he started his singular collection. But, as has happened countless times before fate interceded and pulled this particularly troubled individual from the brink. The redeeming angel in this instant was Loca Pepa. Pepa was demure and not unattractive, she had recently escaped from a mental institution to the south of Madrid. The authorities followed her until she crossed into Alqueria, here she left Spanish jurisdiction and with Alqueria being a de-facto institution without bars they

viewpoint

joyfully closed her case file. Paco and Pepa found each other. Whether telepathy or some other mysterious mechanism was at work is academic, they found each other and Paco’s life was complete. Pepa was fascinated by Paco’s hideous collection of ear wax and delighted in shaping the slimy substance into stylised heart shapes with a ‘P’ inscribed in the centre. Whether this was a display of egotism or a measure of affection for Paco is difficult to say. Life was idyllic or as idyllic as possible for a brace of loonies. Paco, as has been mentioned before had a pet Saharan Dung Beetle named Bengy and Pepa arrived fully equipped with a female Brazilian Treehopper called Benjamina. Benjy and Benjamina gambolled barefoot through the wheat fields of Alqueria in the fundamental ecstasy of true love. Paco and Pepa watched as their charges were swept away on a tidal wave of emotion and pure sexual attraction, an attraction that only exotic beetles can know. We know by now the mental state of our hero Loco Paco and one can make an accurate assumption as to the stability of the newcomer Pepa, after the above text however the sanity of the author must also be brought into question.

Don’t Try This at Home

Despite the doom-mongers of the Web, who suggested that driving after a mastectomy would be out of the question for at least 6 weeks, or possibly the rest of my life, whichever came sooner, I have had no trouble piloting Henry around the local highways and byways. I have not thrust him through the hurly-burly of Spanish city streets – there has been no need. Albox, which has all the requisites for daily life in one shop or another, has been as exciting as it gets. Henry has 5 gears and reverse on the extreme right underneath 5th. He also has a smart gizmo for reversing. This is a moving display of the world behind, complete with green, yellow and red lines, and a sequence of attentiondemanding beeps, the frequency of which increases as he regards the possibility of rear-end contact. This is most helpful – it allows me, should I wish it, to observe myself having a slow-motion collision with the world behind me. I reverse him out of the carport, bring the gearstick over to the extreme left and forward, and off we go. Straight back, 2nd. Up and over to the right, 3rd. Straight back 4th. Up and over to the right again, 5th. To come back down again, simply reverse the process, unless I want to go straight from 5th to reverse, which is not recommended. Then a little glitch appeared. I could go up the gate, no problem. I could go down the gate, no problem – until I had to go from 3rd to 2nd. That smarted a bit! However, I was not going to be defeated by such a minor issue! I

After all, I have been engaging 2nd with my left hand for years, what’s the problem? Pete was not happy. ‘I’m sure that’s not legal.’ He protested. I am sure he’s right, but it seems to work well enough. ‘Let me help.’ So we evolved a strategy. I say ‘Ready’ and disengage 3rd. Pete grabs the now neutralised gearstick, and while I keep my foot firmly on the clutch, he clicks it into 2nd. It is co-ordination of the highest degree,

Lunch: don’t miss the Menu del Dia

If you are visiting Spain for your holidays you might want to change your eating habits in order to enjoy the best of Spanish food at the best possible price. In Spain, almost every single restaurant and bar offer the Menu of the Day (Menu del Dia) which is a set menu at a fixed price. I would highly recommend to make sure you get hungry around 1pm to 3pm, that is when menus are served. Most people, especially on a working day, eat around 1.30pm. The Menu del Dia is a fabulous invention where you can sample local food at a great price along with a vibrant and loud atmosphere caused by happy eaters savoring their hard-earned meal!

Menu del Dia Spain

Tips for eating out in Spain or How do Spanish people eat? Breakfast: Desayuno

In Spain we love breakfast and we love having it everyday. It is very popular to have what we call desayuno at a local bar rather than at home, it is our way to socializing and commenting on the news and.. latest gossips! Spanish people take breakfast either very early before work, at around 7am to 8am, either at their work break at around 11am, so expect bars to get suddenly crowded at these particular times. Spanish people like to have a sweet or a sour snack in the morning, it really depends on

Time for dinner

the person and on the mood.

bocadillo

Most bars offer breakfast deals like: a latte + croissant + orange juice or a coffee + bocadillo (Spanish baguette). Deals are ridiculously cheap, last time I was in Valencia I had some bread with tomato, olive oil and serrano ham, with a cafe con leche and an orange juice for 2.5€ the sunshine on the terrace came for free! So embrace Spanish breakfast and start your day full of energy! One

For your information, most menus include a starter, a main course, a dessert, a drink, bread and VAT and range from 8 to 15€. So walk around (avoid the main touristy squares) and look for the boards outside the restaurants that feature their Menu del Dia’s specials. This is not only a great way to save money but it also allows you to taste traditional, home-made seasonal dishes and mix up with locals! Well, if you follow the Spanish rhythm, by now you would have had breakfast, a 3 course menu, probably a coffee and some cake at 5pm in a pasteleria.. now it’s time for dinner! On work days, Spanish tend to focus more on lunch rather than in diner and, unless it is a special occasion, people tend to eat dinner home. In Spain we eat healthy homemade dinners such salads, grilled meat, fish, fruit and bread. Spanish normally have diner at 8.30pm -9.30pm on weekdays and later on weekends. http://www.aspanishperspective.com/

Interesting Facts About Cats Tidbits of Trivia You Might Not Have Known

Ever y year, nearly four million cats are eaten in Asia. On average, cats spend 2/3 of every day sleeping. That means a nine-year-old cat has been awake for only three years of its life. Unlike dogs, cats do not have a sweet tooth. Scientists believe this is due to a mutation in a key taste receptor.

When a cat chases its prey, it keeps its head level. Dogs and humans bob their heads up and down. The technical term for a cat’s hairball is a “bezoar.” A group of cats is called a “clowder.” Female cats tend to be right pawed, while male cats are more often left pawed. Interestingly, while 90% of humans are right handed, the remaining 10% of lefties also tend to be male. A cat cannot climb head first down a tree because its claws are curved the wrong way A cat can’t climb head first down a tree because every claw on a cat’s paw points the same way. To get down from a tree, a cat must back down.

Cats make about 100 different sounds. Dogs make only about 10. A cat’s brain is biologically more similar to a human brain than it is to a dog’s. Both humans and cats have identical regions in their brains that are responsible for emotions. There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with approximately 40 recognized breeds. Approximately 24 cat skins can make a coat. While it is commonly thought that the ancient Egyptians were the first to domesticate cats, the oldest known pet cat was recently found in a 9,500-year-old grave on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. This grave predates early Egyptian art depicting cats by 4,000 years or more. http://facts.randomhistory.com/

Film Review

Still Alice

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

“The art of losing isn’t hard to master. So many things seem filled with the intent that their loss is no disaster.” If we are defined by our intelligence, our language and articulation, then just imagine what it would be like to lose them all. Julianne Moore, a versatile performer, dubbed the Queen of realism, won an Academy Award in 2015 for her portrayal of Alice Howland, the 50 year old linguistics’ Professor from Columbia University, diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, a rare familial type that meant her children stood a 50/50 chance of inheriting the gene. Recently we have seen a surge in films showing cancer victims as well as Alzheimer victims. Take for instance “The Fault in Our Stars” or “50/50” even “The Notebook” and “Away From Her.” Then, of course there’s John Bayley’s sad account of how Alzheimer’s claimed his wife, the famous writer Iris Murdoch in the film “Iris.” Bayley gave a brutally frank description of what it was like being married to someone with this disease. It is “like being chained to a corpse.” Superficially these films are seen as being similar. But “Still Alice” differs in that the main character is depicted as a fullyformed person right from the start and well-educated, before the disease brutally destroys her intellect, her memories and her ability to use language for communication. As the sufferer, it is Alice who is at the centre of it, helplessly watched by her family. The film begins deceptively with a 50th birthday celebration for Alice with everyone oblivious to the tragedy that will unfold before their eyes. It seems to be a happy occasion, a united family celebrating a birthday. Husband John, a physician (Alec Baldwin: Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, Blue Jasmine, Rock of Ages fame). Son Tom (Hunter Parrish), daughter Anna (Kate Bosworth) and husband, Charlie (Shane McRae). The only absence is Alice’s youngest daughter, Lydia (Kristen Stewart The Twilight Saga). The film is based on Lisa Genova’s debut novel. It was meant to be a small Indie film, a “little” independent project on a small budget of 4 million dollars and it took three and a half weeks to make. Alzheimer’s has become the most feared disease of the 21st century so it’s not surprising that this film took centre stage and attracted lots of interest. Its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival received critical acclaim, particularly from Moore’s performance, her “sheer precision and delicacy.” (Collin/The Telegraph.) Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia which causes memory loss, difficulty with thinking and language. It usually affects the over 65s, although people as young as 50 can develop the symptoms. For Alice, being diagnosed at 50 means it is seen as early onset Alzheimer’s. “We become ridiculous, incapable, comic, dependent, struggling to communicate or understand.” There is a sudden regression into helplessness. Behaviour turns strange, sentences become fumbled and people’s perceptions of sufferers will change. Memory lapses whilst giving a lecture make Alice anxious. She loses her grip temporarily, trying to search for the word “lexicon,” a word familiar to her. Following on, she goes out jogging around the campus and becomes lost and confused.

She stops and we see panic in her face. The camera rotates around her, encircling her. She is breathless, then loses focus and the image becomes blurred. She then stoops, takes a few deep breaths. We then see her at home, feeling despondent and exhausted. At Christmas she welcomes her son Tom’s girlfriend Christine twice. Nothing serious but these incidents do represent tell-tale signs that something isn’t quite right. She tells John: “It feels like my brain is f…ing dying. And everything in my life I have worked for is going.” Alice believes she has a brain tumour and visits a neurologist, Travis Benjamin who suggests doing an MRI followed by a PET scan. The scans show evidence of sporadic memory impairment caused by early onset Alzheimer’s. Alice is naturally devastated, wishing that she had cancer instead reminding us that people wear pink ribbons and raise money to show solidarity. What do they do for Alzheimer’s? “There’s a tremendous amount of shame around the disease and people feel like they’re not seen, they feel isolated.” (Julianne Moore.) To take some control over her mind whilst she can, she types a number of questions and answers into her phone such as her eldest daughter’s name and the month of her birthday. She consults this every day and keeps lists in her kitchen to memorize. Sadly, she records a message on her laptop, filed under Butterfly for when her condition becomes so severe and she instructs herself to take an overdose and end it. From time to time we see images of her late sister and mother who were killed in a car crash in 1972 when Alice was 18 years of age. They always seem happy, walking or playing on the beach. The film shows us Alice’s decline from forgetfulness to total destruction of her memory and intelligence. This absence and vacancy is what she referred to as hell and worse than that at the conference where she was invited to talk about her illness. The film successfully shows her pitiful decline without plunging us into flat despair. It is an emotional journey for us too but not as pitilessly harrowing as Michael Hanebe’s “Amour.” You’ll enjoy the intensity of this journey and hopefully learn to appreciate the simple things in life. “Because nothing is lost for ever. In this world there is a kind of painful progress. A longing for what we’ve left behind. And dreaming about.” Alice is still Alice in spite of this cruel illness. Her legacy lives on in her family. Believability.

Endless Possibilities

With just a few supplies -- paint, glue, and clay -- children can transform the stones they stumble across into animals, people, or toys. Both tempera and acrylic paints work well for rock craft projects; tempera looks chalkier but washes off easily, making it the best choice for kids. Acrylic paint has a glossy finish. Before painting, kids should sketch out their plan: It's easier to envision what the finished project will look like if they draw it first with pencil on paper. Family members can paint their initials on the rocks that suit them and turn them into refrigerator

magnets.

Rock Dominoes Smooth flat stones aren't just for skipping -- they're perfect for game pieces, too. For a set of dominoes, all you need is 28 stones and a white paint pen to draw lines and dots. Begin by drawing a line across the center of each. Then on either side of the line, mark with two sets of dots in every combination from zero to six.

Fish-in-a-Bag Soap

These adorable soaps make great gifts and are also a fun anytime craft. MATERIALS Clear plastic bag: 4 inches wide by 8 inches tall, and at least 1.5 millimeters thick Clear glycerin soap

Heat-resistant measuring cup Double-boiler or microwave Rubbing alcohol

Small spray bottle Plastic fish Clothespin Ribbon Gift tag

STEPS Open the plastic bag and cuff the top enough so that the bag will stand on its own.

Place 4 ounces of solid clear glycerin soap in a heatresistant measuring cup, and melt in a double-boiler or microwave. Pour half the melted soap into the bag. Spray with alcohol until bubbles disappear. Allow to cool and harden for about 1 hour. Re-melt remaining soap. Pour a small amount of melted soap on top of cooled soap in bag. Spray with alcohol. Position fish in melted soap, and let set 15 minutes to lock into place. Pour the remaining soap over fish. Spray with alcohol. Gather bag above soap and pinch with clothespin. Allow soap to cool for 15 minutes. Remove clothespin, and tie with a ribbon threaded with a gift tag.

Kids' Winter Crafts

Keep little hands busy both indoors and out with our favorite cold-weather projects for kids.

Painted Umbrella

Coaxed open by raindrops, umbrellas bloom like flowers in spring. Your child can turn his or hers into the prettiest of them all by painting it with a fanciful pattern.

MATERIALS N y l o n umbrella Paintbrushes P e r m a n e n t waterproof paint Newspaper Smock STEPS Follow the paint manufacturer's directions: Some fabric paints require the addition of fixative; others require ironing the umbrella after painting. Carefully cover the work surface with newspaper before you begin, and have your child wear a smock. Once finished, keep the umbrella open overnight; the paint must dry completely before you close it or use it.

The formula’s the same, with a folding fabric roof that slides backwards and bunches up above the boot. It takes only 12 seconds to retract, and can be operated at any speed. There’s also a heated glass rear screen as standard. The roof goes through four stages: closed, partially open like a sunroof, fully folded back, and fully open with two roof bars removed from above the windows. These can be stored in the boot for the full drop-top experience, but it’s a hassle and means you can’t put the roof back up on the move. That’s important in the UK, where it could rain at any time. You’re likely to keep the top either closed or fully folded back with the bars still in place. With only the roof section open, the Cabrio’s very noisy above 35mph. Folding it right down cuts buffeting, making it surprisingly quiet even on the motorway. Apart from the roof, little separates the Cabrio from its coupe brother. It’s the same size, has the same engines and keeps the impressive 6.95-metre turning circle. It’s still great to drive in town, and at only 2.69m long and 1.66m wide, fits just about anywhere.

engines: a 1.0-litre with 70bhp, or an 89bhp 900cc turbo. Both can be paired with a five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic box. We tried the latter with the more powerful engine, and it seemed right at home on the congested streets where Smart drivers spend most of their time. There’s not much power, but the low-down torque (135Nm at 2,500rpm) means the Smart feels nippy during quick overtakes at low speed. The auto is much smoother and smarter than the old, automated manual in the previous car, too. It makes sense to go for the self-shifter for city driving, but you’ll pay an extra £995 for the privilege. While dual-clutch set-ups are associated with fast shifts (they can pre-select a gear with the second clutch), the Smart’s feels like a standard torque converter. Changes aren’t jerky, but it takes longer

Guardia Civil Launches New Online Police Report System

Damage, loss, theft or recoveries are some of the issues that can be reported on this new service. Citizens will be able to make an online police report at the “eDenuncias Virtual Office”, which you can access at http://www.guardiacivil.es or https://e-denuncia. guardiacivil.es/eDenuncia/index.faces Those users who utilize this application will have priority when confirming the complaint at police stations. The Guardia Civil has launched this online police report system so that citizens can communicate certain crimes to the Spanish authorities. The citizen will be able to report document or personal items loss/ findings, vehicle theft, subtractions from the inside of vehicles, robbery (without any violence or intimidation) and damage from unknown authors. All this and more can be reported at the “e-Denuncias Virtual Office”, which can be accessed at http://www.guardiacivil.es or https://e-denuncia.guardiacivil.es/eDenuncia/index. faces. Certain crimes cannot be reported, as those in which there is physical violence or other events where the authors are clearly identified. Once the citizen has made the report at the “e-Denuncias Virtual Office”, within the next three days he/she will have to go to in person to the assigned Guardia Civil station to confirm the report. However, if the citizen wishes to confirm such report at a different police station other than the assigned one, it can be done by providing the reference given by the “e-Denuncias” system. Citizens who use this application will have priority once they have confirmed their reports, in comparison to other citizens who may come to report events of a similar nature. Therefore, unnecessary delays will be avoided for citizens. n332.es/

Almeria Bowling Club 2016 Joe McCraw Two Wood Singles (metre stick) Report

Once again it was nice to see the very good support for our Two Wood Singles (Metre Stick) knockout competition with 38 entries, which began on 21st and was completed Sunday 24th January. This is played as the title suggests with two woods and played to twentyone ends. The winner being, the first to twenty-one shots within the metre stick or with the most shots on completion of twenty-one ends. The winner for the third year running was John Fitzgerald who beat John Henworth in a game that had everything in bowling skill sets. John playing his normal steady way and did not disappoint us with some superb shots, which at times was equalled by John Henworth. However, although this was a low scoring game it was John Fitzgerald’s day, not letting John Henworth get in front throughout the

game and finished with the score at taking the championship 14-9 on the nineteenth end. John Fitzgerald played Reg Birmingham in the first semi-final and as expected Reg was his usual competitive self-leading the game 5-1 after five ends. However, John then started to pressurise Reg by steadily going ahead. Reg was determined and fought back fighting back and levelling the score at 9-9 after fourteen ends, but unable to keep this improvement when John won on the nineteenth end 16-9 as Reg couldn’t win. In the other semi-final, John Henworth opponent was our new bowler of just ten months’ experience, Tony Lear, who had done extremely well getting to this stage. Unfortunately for Tony, John was in a mean mood playing is normal high standard not allowing Tony to settle, winning this game comfortably. Once again the standard of bowling was excellent throughout the competition On completion our captain John Fitzgerald thanked yours truly for running the competition and thanked all players for taking part, markers, who without we couldn’t run the competition, Colin wright for umpiring, Jim Pike and Brian Hughes for the green preparation. I then echoed Johns thanks before presenting the winning Trophy to John Fitzgerald. This report can be read with photographs on our websites www. bowlingalmeria. com and the new competition website http://www. abcbowlingcomps. com Vic Parsons Deputy Chairman & Press Officer

Guardiola is a blue

Pep Guardiola has agreed a threeyear contract to become Manchester City manager in the summer. The 45-year-old, currently in charge at Bayern Munich, will replace Manuel Pellegrini, who will leave on 30 June. A statement from City said Chilean Pellegrini, 62, was “fully supportive” of the announcement being made. The club said negotiations with former Barcelona coach Guardiola had been “a recommencement of discussions that were curtailed in 2012”. Roberto Mancini was City boss at the time, and led them to the domestic title that year. Pellegrini succeeded the Italian in 2013 and took the club to a Premier League and League Cup double the following season. He has won 64 of his 99 Premier League games as a manager, a record only eclipsed by Jose Mourinho, who won 73 of his opening 99 league matches as Chelsea boss.

City could yet win four trophies under Pellegrini this season. They are already through to the final of the League Cup and are second in the league behind Leicester City. The Blues are also through to the knockout stages of the Champions League and will play Chelsea in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Why City went for Pep Barcelona’s most successful manager with 14 trophies in four years, including three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues. Took a year’s break before joining Bayern in 2013, following the club’s Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup treble under Jupp Heynckes. Won the league twice in his two full seasons with Bayern, who are eight points clear in his third campaign. He is yet to win the Champions League with the German club and has been knocked out at the semi-final stage twice. bbc.com

Premier League clubs' spending reaches £1bn this season

Newcastle have spent more than any other Premier League club in the January transfer window so far

February 4th & 5th is Footgolf at La Envia The game of Footgolf is becoming increasingly more popular throughout the UK and Europe and is played just like golf – except instead of a golf ball you use a football, and instead of a golf club you use your foot to drive the ball. La Envia Golf will have its front 9 holes specially adapted for Footgolf on Thursday 4th & Friday 5th February, providing the perfect opportunity for you to come and try the game.

Premier League clubs have spent more than £1bn on transfers in a season for the first time, new figures reveal. A record £965m was spent in 201415, but that figure has already been beaten, with clubs had until 23:00 GMT on Monday to sign players. The 20 clubs have already spent £130m in the January transfer window alone, with Newcastle spending £29m. They have signed Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend and Henri Saivet,

Play 9 holes of Footgolf for just 15€pp, with the option to play 9 holes of golf afterwards for 15€pp. If you don’t have a football it is possible to rent one from Caddiemaster for 2€

and bid £21m for West Brom striker Saido Berahino. Transfer deadline day latest Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "We've seen Premier League clubs again use the January window to invest significantly in playing talent. "With a day left, the total gross spending this season has already reached £1bn for the first time." http://www.bbc.com/
