Spain celebrates carnival night
CARNIVAL night is now in full swing with parades in fancy-dress taking place across the country, to be followed by all-night street parties with open-air discos, live bands, and pop-up bars in town centres. The most famous carnivals in Spain are held in the Canary Islands, followed closely by Cádiz in the southwest of the mainland, but many of the other largest, most popular and most flamboyant carnivals in the country are in small, otherwise-unknown locations. On the east coast in the Comunidad Valenciana, the carnival or carnestoltes in Pego, Alicante province is among the top destinations for revellers on the night before the start of Lent. Previews
of costumes for this year – which are frequently donned by entire groups - have included, predictably, Harry Potter characters, Frozen characters, Minions, and characters from Game of Thrones. Others are more timeless – clowns, angels, devils, Disney characters, animals – or random, with masks, wigs, tinsel and any other colourful adornments partygoers can find in their local Chinese bazaar. Children's carnival parades took place earlier today – often followed by discos or puppet shows and craft workshops – but the adults are now enjoying the revelry thinkspain

First Spanish Zika virus case involving pregnant woman diagnosed
The infected patient, who lives in Catalonia, contracted disease on visit to Colombia The regional authorities in Catalonia on Thursday confirmed the first imported case of the Zika virus in a pregnant woman in Spain. Is this proof of a Spanish YETI?
Shaky camera footage and pictures appear to show an abominable snowman in the Pyrenees Photograph was posted online with the message: 'What the hell is this?' Footage shows the mysterious animal walking through snow covered hills Ski resort bosses searched the tourist spot after the picture was posted Mystery still remains unsolved but skiers were told not to be alarmed Shaky camera footage and pictures appear to show a mysterious Yeti-style creature. Spanish ski resort bosses have combed part of the tourist spot after a skier posted the image appearing to show an abominable
snowman in Formigal in Spain. The photograph, posted online with the message: 'Strange animal spotted in Formigal. What the hell is this?', has been shared thousands of times. The picture sparked a search by ski resort owners Aramon and a frenzied debate over whether a Spanish Yeti was on the loose or if it was a bear, Photoshop montage or even a soldier wearing mountain camouflage. The mystery remained unsolved last night, although skiers were being reassured there was no cause for alarm. A spokesman for the resort, which hosted the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in 2008, confirmed a search of the area had been conducted after an ‘alleged Yeti sighting.’ He said: ‘We have spoken to the witnesses of the sighting to identify the area in which it took place and after combing the area we have found nothing. h t t p://w w w. dailymail.co.uk/

Autumn and winter jobs for around the home and garden Winter is fast approaching and before the really cold and wet weather gets here now is the ideal time to do maintenance jobs around the home and garden in preparation for winter. So if you have a spare half day or a weekend and the weather is a lovely autumnal day why not get out in the winter sun and do those jobs ready for the winter months. Leaves Leaves look nice when they are golden brown and red whilst they are still on the trees but as they fall off they can be a real pain. They can make driveways and paths slippery under foot, block gutter and downpipes and generally make the garden look untidy. So a good sweep up can make the world of difference and as an added bonus you can bag them up and compost them ready to be spread of the vegetable patch the following year.
Draught excluder If you have draughts around doors and windows, or even letter boxes you can quickly and relatively cheaply reduce or completely iliminate them simply by buying and fitting draught excluders. Draught excluders and readily available from DIY merchants and stores and are easy to fit, many door and window draught excluders simply are self adhesive, some require fitting with screws, such as in the case of a letter box draught excluder. Painting Ok the winter isn’t the best time for painting outside but you could to a temporary job by making sure wood is protected with paint, a simple undercoat and topcoat on the bare areas could help protect the wood over the winter and you can go back and do a proper job in the spring of the following year. Boiler and heating We all rely on our heating this time of year, so it is worth checking everything is working OK before the really cold weather comes, if you have radiators that are colder at the top than the bottom you may need to bleed your radiators, if you are unsure of this ask a plumber. You should always call an registered gas fitter if you need work done on your boiler or gas fire. If you have an open fire, when was the last time you had the chimney swept, does it need doing before you have an open fire? www.improvingyourproperty.co.u

a-z business directory Both individuals and businesses can support local businesses, all you have to do is: ...whenever you can, buy from a local business as opposed to buying outside of your region. These days, when most people do the majority of their shopping in giant supermarkets, out of town shopping complexes or city centre malls, it can be difficult to draw attention to a small business trading locally. But with concerns being raised over community cohesion, social inclusion and the environment, the local business has never been more important. It’s down to enterprising business owners like you to promote the importance of supporting local businesses so that the public understand why it matters and how it can benefit whole communities. In order to tackle the trend toward supermarket shopping, it’s important to understand why people choose it. Research indicates that the reasons they most frequently cite are the variety of products available and the convenience of having them all in one place.

Do you support C is for... Cinema local businesses? Challenge this directly through poster campaigns and advertisements which emphasise the variety offered by small independent businesses, contrasted with the way that monopolies tend toward homogenisation. Remind people how convenient it is to have a lot of small shops offering different products and services located in the area, and how convenient it is to be able to shop close to home. It’s okay to admit that big business has the edge in some areas if you stress that there’s a cost to this. For instance, you could have a poster featuring a pint of milk which acknowledges that it’s cheaper in the supermarket but points out how much less time is spent if it can be picked up nearby, so that it still pays to shop locally. If your business purchases its products locally, it’s worth emphasising this - shopping with you means supporting local producers and cutting down on the environmental costs of long distance transport. If you sell food, it also means getting fresher produce. You can also point out that local businesses mean local jobs and increased opportunities for local people, encouraging the young to stay in the area and become positively involved with the community. It cuts out the daily commute for many people and makes their working lives more pleasant

over the past 25 years. We are before a work that awakens our attention from the first listen. Her undeniable beauty is also a rewarding surprise, a space where the average times soft spoken and quiet and relaxing atmospheres recreate mystical intermingle in a wise sequence with other more rhythmic court. Although the 11 songs chosen to be part of this "Dalma" are the work of artists as diverse as Conchita, Pablo Cebrián, Ivan Ferreiro or self Sergio Dalma, this work breathes a whole color and flavor itself where all compositions seem tailored. Sergio Dalma's voice remains the hallmark of the artist in this new job, but here new nuances are discovered at every turn, every feeling, new vocal sensations capable of transmitting a force and delicacy hitherto unpublished. "Dalma" is a subtle and full of life, brave and modern production and album together a collection of songs powerfully evocative, beautiful glittering mosaic compositions in the voice of Sergio Dalma take on new meaning, as if these songs they had been waiting a lifetime. Sergio sings with a purity renewing its trademark, it had never sounded so good. More eclectic than ever, this new album is notable for its instrumental quality where less is more. There are a lot of music in "Dalma", here everything is in place in a fascinating album with episodes of deep emotion, a record that Sergio Dalma wanted to go to places I had not been and try things I had never done before, namely if there were risks would have no choice but to make the best of himself. And he has succeeded. Saturday, February 13 At 21:30 h t t p : / / w w w . teatroauditorioroquetas. org/

US to extradite Salvadoran colonel over Jesuit murders Salvador.
A procession to commemorate the victims. Photo: Marvin Recinos / AFP A US judge on Friday approved the extradition to Spain of a Salvadoran former colonel linked to the 1989 murders of six Jesuit priests, in a decision lauded by rights groups. Inocente Montano Morales, 73, will remain in custody pending final approval for extradition by US Secretary of State John Kerry, which is likely to be a formality. Montano Morales, who previously served time in a US prison for immigration fraud and perjury, was El Salvador's deputy defense minister at the time the Jesuit priests – who were seeking an end to the nation's civil war – were slaughtered. Six priests, their housekeeper and the housekeeper's 16-year-old daughter were gunned down in their residence on the campus of the Universidad Centroamericana in the capital San
Five of the priests were Spanish nationals, including a university rector. Montano Morales has been indicted in Spain, along with 19 other former members of the Salvadoran military, of the murder of the
Spanish nationals. "The court finds sufficient evidence contained in Spain’s submissions to warrant a finding of probable cause to believe... he committed the charged offences," wrote Federal Court Judge Kimberly Swank, based in North Carolina. The Center for Justice and Accountability, a non-profit rights organisation, praised the move. “This finding is a vindication of the years of struggle of the Salvadoran people against a repressive military which tried to turn reality on its head by calling anyone who defied it – including the Jesuits priests – terrorists,” said senior legal advisor Carolyn Patty. El Salvador’s civil war raged from 1980 to 1991, claiming the life of some 75,000 people. thelocal
LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com MENTIONING A TRUST ON A SPANISH WILL IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE. SOMETIMES WHAT IS LEGALLY POSSIBLE AND WHAT IS PRACTICAL IS NOT THE SAME THING. THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE. Question: I had a Spanish will made out for myself and my wife some time ago. We have recently hired a solicitor to handle a conveyance and he has taken a look at the wills and told us they are not good and that we should make new ones. We are now uncertain of what to do. We have attached the wills for you to take a look at them. Our instruction to our original solicitor in Spain was for him to do exactly what we did in the UK on our English wills. He said that since the Directive 650/2012 this can be done. Answer. As my granny would always say: a little knowledge can cause a lot of damage. There is no doubt, the will is dreadful. You must change it. I doubt the person who prepared your will has ever dealt with probate in Spain and in fact I doubt the person is even a solicitor. ( I say this because any solicitor I know would tell you that your will is asking for trouble). The will essentially translates the English will you handed over and sets up a trust to protect your children versus your second wife. Even though Directive 650/2012 allows English law to be applied (by choice of the testator) to how an estate is distributed in Spain, using institutions like trusts will cause endless problems and expenses for your heirs because Trusts are not understood in Spain the same way as in UK. So Certifications of English law (which are very expensive) will be required to help wind up the estate (by explaining the content of English law). To this you
will have to add a lot of problems with Spanish Inheritance tax (remember Directive 650/2012 has no effect on the taxation of the estate). In Spain it is the beneficiary that pays inheritance tax and not the estate. Descendants and spouse in Andalucía are exempt if they each receive less than 175,000€. In this case the trustee is a non-family member and as he has faculty to dispose of assets, the Spanish tax office could interpret that he is in control of the estate and is the person who owes the tax. As non-family he would receive a large tax bill. (This could all be battled out but it would be a mess.) Conclusion: Keep things sensible and uncomplicated. In this case achieve what you want using methods that are common practice in Spain. (Even though with the Directive it is possible to have the will run under English law you must remember that probate will need to be obtained in Spain, so making a will that nobody understands in Spain is not a good idea It would be up to your heirs to prove what UK law says and I can tell you from plenty of experience that dealing with Trusts in Spain is nightmare scenario.) In this case leave the life possession of your property to you wife and the residual value to your children. With the values you have sent me the estate will be exempt, probate will be simple and both your children and your wife will be fully protected as you asked for. Michael Davies. Abogado.

to include a good eye cream to keep aging wrinkles at bay. Skin around the eyes is thinner than the skin on the rest of your face and shows age faster, says Dr. Stuart. Keeping the eye area moisturized can take years off your face. “Eye creams that are most effective contain Retin A, a form of vitamin A,” says Dr. Stuart. Other important factors include emollients and moisturizers that trap moisture, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C. “These promote formation of collagen and elastin to tighten the skin and reduce fine lines around the eyes,” Dr. Stuart says.

Are you aging faster than your years? If you don't like what you see in the mirror, it may be time to evaluate some of your daily routines. HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in

pause for thought
Lent already! A time for spring-cleaning both body and soul - to take time out to reflect on our Christian lives. I’m fully aware that we all face the challenge of prioritising our precious time, but as a Christian, Lent is an opportunity unlike any other to stop and listen to that “still small voice of calm”; to find that quiet place, away from the distractions of modern living, - switch off the mobile, turn off the tablet, computer, television, and spend some time reflecting, either in prayer or biblereading. Instead of giving something up, why not see Lent as a time to take something on, adjusting our regular routine and making time and space to be still? So often we protest that there simply isn’t enough time in the day to achieve so many things. Well here’s a great opportunity to withdraw as Jesus did and reflect in the peace and calm of our day, of where we are and where God wants us to be. There are many opportunities to be grasped during Lent, which will set us on a path to be ready to celebrate the great festival of Easter. So let’s make time to enjoy, rather than endure Lent; a positive time, for a faithful review, so we’re ready to rejoice in the strength and knowledge that in pausing to listen we’ve allowed ourselves to learn what
God wants for us. An old custom of the church was to say the Ash Wednesday prayer each day in Lent, which seems perhaps a useful place to start. Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ your son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. The main options to consider in a european move are how big your load is likely to be, and whether you require your belongings on a specific date, or just within a certain timescale. We offer two main services to cover these options: • Full Load - You pay for sole use of the vehicle. Gives you full control (as far as is possible) over the collection and delivery of your belongings, allowing you to work to a specific date. • Part Load - The cost effective option. You have part use of the vehicle along with other loads going via the same route to their desinations. Collection can still be when you require, but delivery is arranged on a full vehicle (cost efficient) basis. However, we will still do our best to work within your time frame. Both services can have storage incorporated into the move, and both offer the same experienced, dedicated customer care service from planning and preperation right through to delivery. PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT
THE BEST PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!!
How to Rent Your Spanish Property Many people considering buying a second home in Spain do so with an eye to renting it out when it’s not being used by the family. This can be a good way to make sure the property pays for itself but, before you leap onto the rental market, you should look at what the law says. In 2013, the law in Spain was amended to devolve regulation of holiday lets to the region in which the property is located. Simply, where your property is based affects what you are allowed to do. The law change was brought about at the behest of hoteliers throughout the country who felt that, while they had to adhere to strict rules and regulations relating to hygiene, fire and safety etc., those renting out private residences got away ‘scotfree’. This new law attempts to redress the balance, as well as to raise the standards of rental accommodation to match that of hotels and, some cynics might say, increase the tax revenue from those renting out. What Spanish Property Law Says
Essentially, the law varies for each of the 17 self-governing regions of Spain. For example, some inland areas with low tourist visibility such as CastillaLa Mancha (of Don Quixote fame) and Castilla y León have no regulations. While holiday hotspot areas such as the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands have extremely strict standards (yet vary between islands). Here’s a taste of the regulations applying to other areas: Valencia Holiday properties are subject to strict criteria in terms of the accommodation and furnishings provided. In addition a recent modification to the law on holiday rentals states that all holiday properties must be registered with the Register for Tourist Businesses, Establishments and Professionals. Once registered you will be provided with a registration number and this number must be included in all advertising and publicity materials for the property. Failure to include the registration number in your advertising could result in fines for both you and the advertising channel.
Asturias You cannot rent out a flat for fewer than 30 days and if you are renting out a holiday property you must offer the property for rent for at least July, August and September, the intention being to stop people from living in their beach homes during the summer months. Basque Country At present if you are renting out only one holiday property then there is no requirement for that property to be registered. However, if you are offering more than one holiday property for rent then you must register these properties. Please note that the law will change in 2015 or 2016 and that the new rules will state that all holiday properties must be registered. Andalucia The implementation of the law is still pending in this region, but that hasn’t stopped some localities issuing fines. It is generally understood that the local government is close to approving a new law and so it will be important to keep abreast of the latest developments if you intend to purchase a property to use as a holiday let. Catalonia Legislation came into force in this region in 2012, requiring that all holiday rentals in the area be licensed, but there are tens of thousands of properties still not licensed and property owners facing fines that are enforceable. To make it even more confusing the regulations throughout the regions are often subject to change so, if you are considering renting out your property, you should check carefully
17
what the requirements are in that area. The Risks of Non-Compliance Not adhering to these local regulations comes at a hefty price. Since the law came into force, fines amounting to €537,771 have been issued in penalties; there have been 284 cases brought with owners and agents receiving fines of anywhere between €3,000 and €24,000. But it hasn’t stopped at just agents and owners being penalised. The Catalan government recently issued a fine of €30,000 (approximately £24,000) to internet sensation Airbnb for ‘a serious breach of local laws’ publishing details of rental properties that have not been registered with the Tourism Registry of Catalonia and has threatened to block Airbnb from operating in the region. What are the Costs? The localisation of regulation means that the licence cost also varies depending on which region your property is in. Some areas operate on a set-fee basis, with fees known at the time of writing between €177 to €500, but other areas like the Balearic Islands work out the cost on a per guest basis. In all cases, though, the licence fee is a one-off cost, which should be factored in if you are planning to rent your property out. Take Out Insurance Don’t forget you will also need to ensure adequate insurance cover, including public liability and specific rental insurance, and you will also need to declare any earnings to the Spanish tax agency, as well as to HMRC if you are resident in the UK. https://www.aplaceinthesun.com

According to a study carried out by property portal, idealista.com, which analysed the 38,595 homes in Spain advertised for sale on their portal in January from the various financial institutions, the majority of these dwellings are located in small or medium size towns, with approximately 66% of the banks’ homes situated in towns of less than 50,000 inhabitants. The towns with between 5,000 and 20,000 inhabitants accounted for 29% of the total homes for sale in January, followed by those with between 20,000 and 50,000 inhabitants (22% of the total), while 12% of these dwellings are located in villages with between 1,000 and 5,000 inhabitants, and just 3% of the properties advertised are in villages with less than 1,000 people.
The analysis shows that only 8% of all the homes for sale by financial institutions are situated in the larger cities with populations of over 500,000 people, while 13% of the homes are for sale in both the cities with between 100,000 and 500,000 inhabitants, and those with between 50,000 and 100,000 inhabitants. Some 59% of the advertised dwellings are priced at lower than 100,000 euros, while 23% cost between 100,000 and 150,000 euros. The homes with prices between 150,000 and 200,000 euros account for 10% of those advertised, and those between 200,000 and 300,000 euros account for 6% of the total. Moreover, just 2% of these properties are priced at over 300,000 euros. kyero.com

BE AWARE OF SELF PROCLAIMED LEGAL ADVISORS THE LAW SOCIETIES OF ORIHUELA AND ALICANTE TAKE ACTION AGAINST NON QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS ACTING AS SOLICITORS In its edition of the 17th of November national newspaper “Expansion” informs of legal action by the Law Society of Orihuela against translators who use terms with “legal profession connotations” to describe themselves and their work (i.e. legal advisors, legal services, legal advice, etc) which lead clients to consider that they are dealing with solicitors when in fact they are dealing in many cases with people with no legal qualification whatsoever. The newspaper informs that the Law Society of Orihuela has presented various cases to the courts including criminal cases with prison sentence requests. The “Consejo General de la Abogacia Española” (the ruling body of all the Law Societies in Spain) have detected cases in Malaga, Marbella, Almeria, Murcia, Alicante and the Belearic Islands. Having something as important as a will or a conveyance performed by someone with no qualification could cause serious consequences to your wealth. We are detecting terrible mistakes and when this happens these people are just turning around and saying that they just translated. If you wish to find out if the person you have dealt with is a solicitor, please go to: http://www.abogacia.es/servicios-abogacia/censo-de-letrados/ If you have been misled by somebody who has given you the impression of being a solicitor without this being the case you can do two things: Denounce the case to the law Society of Almeria. They will take action again that person. If you contact us on abogadoscontraelintrusismo@gmail.com we will help you do this. Claim a full refund of any fees you have paid to that person. If they do not pay you back you may wish to denounce them for fraud. For you to denounce it is not necessary for them to have said that they are a solicitor. It is sufficient for them to have purposely misled you into believing that this is the case. To become a solicitor in Spain it requires 5 years at university followed by one or two years of training in a solicitor office or at the law society by taking a course before you can join the bar. After you have joined, training never ends and one is on a permanent learning curve until you retire. Solicitors also carry indemnity insurance. Going to a person with no qualification to provide you with legal advice regarding your wills or the conveyance of a property is no different than going to your local hairdresser to have a tooth out. With a you tube tutorial and the correct instruments she can give it a go but… If you have any doubts about your situation, please contact us: abogadoscontraelintrusismo@gmail.com The Dean of the Almería Law Society backs this initiative and intends to initiate with immediate effect the necessary actions against these cases of possible crime of professional intrusion to protect its members and to guarantee the rights of the expat community that is the main victim of this abuse. To this aim the Dean (the head of the Almería Law Society) facilitates his direct e-mail address in case you suspect you wish to denounce of one of these cases directly to him: decano@icaalmeria.com

Spain has to cut deficit in 2016, Moscovici says
Talks to break the political deadlock that followed a December election in which all four main political parties fell short of a majority are continuing, with the Socialists now leading efforts to form a coalition. Their chances of securing enough support are seen as slim, however, even with backing from anti-austerity party Podemos. Formerly the main opposition party, the Socialists said in campaigning that if elected they would ask Brussels to relax deficit targets. Asked about the Spanish budget in a news conference in Brussels, Moscovici said that in order to stay in line with the rules, the deadline had to be respected. Spain was required to bring its deficit below the EU’s ceiling of 3 percent of gross domestic product in 2016, but the Commission’s latest forecasts released on Thursday pointed to a deficit of 3.6 percent this year. The 2015 deficit was projected at 4.8 percent, well in excess of the 4.2 percent target set by the Commission.
Spain’s acting Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said it was too early to assess whether the 2015 goal would be missed, adding that the main uncertainty was the country’s autonomous regions, which have overspent in recent years. “The risk that the Spanish economy could pose for the euro zone at the moment does not come from whether or not the public deficit goal will be missed by a few percentage points,” De Guindos told journalists in Madrid. “The risk is that we should have a major slowdown (in the economy), which would cause problems for fiscal policy and for the euro zone as a whole.” De Guindos insisted there were no signs of any impact on the Spanish economy so far from the political impasse, adding that output was expanding steadily and could match the 0.8 percent quarterly growth rate reached in the last three months of 2015. “The preliminary data we have so far for 2016 does not in any way show a slowdown,” De Guindos said, adding that strong growth would help the country make any necessary deficit adjustments. The acting economy minister -- whose centre-right government slashed spending during a deep recession and brought in a labour reform contested by rival parties -- has long argued that reversing some of these policies would damage the economy. http://finance.yahoo.com/

MUNDI
The EU Court declares Spanish inheritance tax ilegal The Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) has determined in a judgement that inheritance tax in Spain is in violation of EU law by establishing a difference in treatment between residents and non-residents when implementing tax cuts. The ruling against Spain, which must also pay the costs of the case, responds to an action against Spain launched in March 2012 by the European Commission (EC) on the grounds that some aspects of state legislation governing gift and inheritance tax were incompatible with the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU concerning the free movement of persons and capital and the Agreement on the European Economic Area. The Court accepted the arguments of Spain with regard to the free movement of people, because the EC could not prove how the Spanish legislation might restrict such freedom, but confirmed that the inheritance law “constitutes a restriction on the free movement of capital”.

Poyato: Man and Boy
A great deal has been written about Antonio Poyato and his Remitroot crop, the mainstay of the Alquerian economy but what about the man himself, his boyhood and the pressures that moulded him into what he is today? Antonio was born in Alqueria some forty-five summers ago to Pepe and Carmen. They were poor workers of the land and rearers of a species of Alquerian goat which produces no milk and whose flesh has the texture of Balsa Wood and the taste of bronchial mixture. When asked why they kept them, they replied that they were badly advised but had now formed a strong emotional bond with the animals. The inquirer thought it prudent not to pursue the matter. Little is known about Poyato’s early years other than his attachment to the goats which he knew by name and who responded to his commands. Just what these commands were isn’t on record, perhaps rightly so. As a teenager Antonio was a quiet courteous young man who took his studies seriously. He was conscientious in all he did and was always willing to help out around his parents smallholding. All who came into contact with him thought him charming and helpful. He was generous to a fault. His generosity left him financially weak but the the joy of giving made his lack of cash more than worth while. He married a local girl who was quite pretty but unfortunately not from the front. Then Antonio Poyato turned to drink, it was the making of him. He stopped giving and so became financially secure. He stopped helping others and so had the time
viewpoint
and energy to pursue his own goals. His wife left him allowing him to start a series of meaningless but very satisfying liaisons with local beauties. His liking for the heady effects of alcohol prompted him to research and experiment with the root known to the Romans as Remitus Radix. This led to the rediscovery of the plant now called Remitroot and the rest is of course history. But I will reiterate the plants attributes for late comers to our story. Remitus Radix was much savoured by the Romans as the base for a potent wine and especially for its effect as an aphrodisiac. It is said that Caligula had some of his best nights on Remitus Radix. Now other uses for the plant have been discovered. It can be used to lag pipes, to prevent corrosion in the ballast tanks of oil tankers. It can also be woven into a soft, durable and wonderfully elegant cloth, which unfortunately explodes on contact with water. The drinking of Remitroot products is extremely addictive and has guaranteed the fortunes of Alqueria. We can only applaud the change in direction that Antonio Poyato took in his early manhood.

The Retrogression of Technology
New is not always better. Take for instance the recently deceased Land Rover Discovery, ditched because it ‘no longer fulfilled the requirements of the modern the motor industry.’ I remember the original Land Rover – It cocked a snook at the ‘requirements of the modern the motor industry.’ It was its own master and went its own way, through Hell and high water and everything in between. It understood its job, which was to get there. Everything was removable and replaceable, and if anything broke it could be mended right there on the spot, often using nothing more complicated than a pair of tights or a toothpick. The same with phones. I never had any trouble when I lifted the receiver (somebody please explain to the youngsters) and a polite voice speaking the Queen’s English would ask me for my ‘Number please.’ But now we have a Smartphone! I didn’t like the old Stupidphone, but the new phone has driven me to new heights of ire! I have changed my mind – Stupidphone wasn’t so bad after all! Smartphone is prettier, but that is about all. Smartphone is bigger, so doesn’t fit into a pocket as did Stupidphone. To make a call all it required with Stupidphone was to lift his lid, and there were the numbers, all ready and available. Smartphone needs to be turned on first, by pressing a tiny indent in his side, then waiting while he wakes up. Can I

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk then make a call? Oh, no, he has to be told that I want to make a call. Then he wants to know who it is that I want to call, offering me a list of almost the entire population of Andalucía – if he’s only pay attention, he’d find out when I press the numbers! Once I’ve managed to access the keypad and put in the number there is no simple OK to initiate dialling – Smartphone deems me too stupid to understand OK, and instead offers me a series of dumbed-down pictorials from which to make a choice. Now that is just perverse! Why does he think I keyed the number in the first place, if not to call it? In short, making a call is so long-winded and complicated that at times I feel it would be quicker to walk there with a written message. Come back Stupidphone; I’m sorry if I was a bit harsh on you!

Now the big question: Should you tip? Last but not least: tipping in Spain. This is a very controversial subject so I am just going to tell you what we normally do in Spain, not what you should do or what I normally do. It is very simple, Spanish people don’t usually tip. Without going into VAT and minimum wage details, in Spain it is not expected that you leave 10 or 20% tip. When you eat a Menu del Dia, as it is a quick daily

dining in Spain
If you are travelling and you cannot cook at home, I would recommend you don’t miss your Menu del Dia: this way you won’t be too hungry at dinner time and you could head to a bar for some local tapas, or for one simple main course at a local restaurant. It is very rare for restaurants to offer Menus in the evenings so expect to pay much higher prices than for lunchtime. If you want to eat out, make sure you

don’t arrive to the restaurant before 8pm or later than 10.30-11pm but if you go to a tapas bar, they will serve you food all-day long. However, weekends are another story and Spanish tend to dine out very often: in summer time Spanish can book a table as late as 11pm! But the norm is too book a table at a restaurant at around 9pm (On a Saturday it is also a custom to go for vino and tapas as an aperitivo before heading to the restaurant)

option, Spanish normally don’t leave any tip or if they do, they will only leave the change (1€, 20cts or 50cts), it is not an insult to leave little coins, trust me, in Spain any help is welcome. It is different when you go to a restaurant or to an elegant place where people then leave from 1 to 5€ in tips (not a percentage of the total amount). Also, Spanish people take the tipping act as a personal way of saying thank you. If the service or the food have exceeded their expectations then they would leave something, if not, they will pay the exact amount Menu del Dia 10€ and leave. Happy Animal Facts That Will Make You Smile It’s hard to say what it is about animals that we love the most – their cute or beautiful looks, their natural innocence or the emotional reactions that they elicit from us. But whatever the case may be, one of these 30 happy animal facts is bound to bring a smile to your face. A lot of these facts also underscore the similarities and emotional connections that people can share with animals, which raises a broader and more interesting questions – what is it about animals that we love so much? 1. Sea otters hold hands when they sleep to keep from drifting apart. 2. Squirrels plant thousands of new trees each year simply by forgetting where they put their acorns. 3. When playing with female puppies, male puppies will often let them win, even if they have a physical advantage. 4. Turtles can breathe through their butts. 5. Cows have best friends. 6. Gentoo penguins propose to their lifemates with a pebble. 7. A prison in Washington pairs up “death row” shelter
cats with select inmates as part of a rehabilitation program. It seems to be a pretty wonderful thing for both the inmates and the cats. 8. Macaques in Japan use coins to buy vending machine snacks. 9. Norway knighted a penguin. 10.In China, killing a Panda is punishable by death. 11. Rats laugh when tickled. 12. Spiders can’t fly. 13. Sweden has a rabbit show-jumping competition called Kaninhoppning. 19.Japanese Macaques make snowballs for fun. ht t p://w w w. boredpanda.com/

Film Review
Magic in the Moonlight
“The world may or may not be without purpose but it’s not totally without some kind of magic.”
Whether you’re interested in science or logic is there a place in your heart to believe that magic can and does exist? Sophie Baker (Emma Stone The Amazing Spider Man 2012) quotes Nietzsche as saying that we need our illusions to live. Stanley’s response is categorical: We can’t go round deluding ourselves.” More importantly, what about deluding others? “Magic” is regarded as being a lightweight American romantic comedy by Woody Allen. It is not considered one of his finer films although it has been described as being accomplished and worth watching for the two main characters when they are sparring. Imagine chalk and cheese. It’s just like that. Insults bounce off each other like a ball constantly hitting a brick wall. Meagre attempts at philosophising which just skirt around the meaning of life and the purpose of existence. Not altogether convincing but entertaining to watch. Stanley is so set in his ways, a stubborn man who always has to be right. The film attempts to explore illusions, trickery, deception however you want to describe it just like A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, The Railway Man) plays an obnoxious but worldfamous illusionist and the film opens with Wei Ling Soo performing to a Berlin audience in 1928, mesmerised when he makes an elephant vanish into thin air. This is Stanley Crawford, an arrogant, bitter, stuffy, egotistical and priggish man. He patronises the stage hands calling them Neanderthals and Assassins. The conductor is a blithering idiot and for the autograph hunters they are mental defectives. Watching the performance in awe is fellow illusionist and so-called friend, Harold Burkhan (Simon McBurney) who visits Stanley’s dressing room to congratulate him. His compliments are double-edged: “A genius with all the charm of a typhus epidemic.” Is this a friend speaking? Howard persuades Stanley to travel to the south of France with him, the Cote d’Azur, to abandon his fiancee Olivia and the promise of a holiday to observe a mystic who is preying on wealthy families like the Catledges. Stanley is notoriously regarded as the “greatest debunker of fake spiritualists” and he is delighted for this invitation to expose this sleezy fraudster. Visiting Provence also allows him the opportunity to visit Aunt Vanessa (Eileen Atkins), sharp-tongued and full of sarcasm for Stanley who welcomes him with the innuendo of being “boring to the point of perfection.” We do learn that Stanley had an unhappy childhood which he compares to a dark cloud that has followed him dogging his life. His

life is shallow and meaningless until his beliefs are challenged by Sophie, another lost soul subjected to a poor childhood who has found an opportunity to break free of this poverty trap with her mother to lead a life of luxury with one milksop of a man, Brice Catledge who sees her as the bees’ knees! “Sophie sees all, she can predict the future. She’s a visionary and a vision.” Is she really? Not according to Stanley! He is absolutely besotted with her and serenades her tempting her with a life of luxury: yachts, expensive designer clothes, travel around Europe. The sky’s the limit. Sophie is tempted. Allen’s views on atheism come through solidly with Stanley, a bit of a contradiction himself. Acting out of character, he attempts to pray to God for a full recovery for Aunt Vanessa who has had a serious car crash, left in a critical condition. On reflection he rejects God and admits the act of prayer is twaddle. So we are back to where we started with Stanley believing that if God doesn’t exist, Sophie must be a charlatan. Interestingly, both sell illusions but in different ways. And that’s probably where the similarity ends. They spend time together and Sophie starts to develop some romantic feelings for a man who is unable to feel emotions in a similar way. And yet, he is the one who experiences an epiphany although vulnerable and susceptible to trickery, something he should understand well. His lifelong rationalism and cynicism have been misguided. Is this what he decides? Yes his world is turned upside down but can he come out of the experience a better and wiser person? “I’m a rational man who believes in a rational world. Any other way lies madness.” Apply his logic. If you believe in magic, if you ever delude yourself you inflict insanity upon yourself? Hopefully not. Allen’s ideals are not water-tight so enjoy the contrived romantic comedy and solve the riddle. How can a match made in heaven ring true for an atheist like Stanley or Allen?

Ikea is offering refunds to customers who feel that they have been misled while purchasing sofas. Ikea in Australia received criticism over the layout of its website, which appeared to show faux leather furniture as genuine leather furniture. It later emerged that the same problem occurred on the UK website. Ikea says that it has taken steps to rectify the issues. However there still appears to be some room for confusion on the British website. The ‘Ekero’ armchair, designed by Eva Lilja Löwenhielm

Best cheap cars Looking for a cheap new car? There’s rarely been so much choice, with more than 25 different models falling under the magic £10,000 mark. Of course, due to a wide range of enticing finance deals, the actual number of bargain new cars, if you only consider monthly repayments, is even larger. But

if the price on the windscreen is all-important, you’ve never had it so good. Don’t think that a four-figure price tag will leave you with wind-down windows and no headrests, because those days are largely gone. Today, £10,000 can get you a practical, cheap-to-run car with all sorts of electronic and electric windows. But the i10 SE is the best model for under £10,000, thanks to its cruise control, front and rear electric windows and poweradjustable heated door mirrors. Whichever i10 model you choose, you’ll enjoy a reasonably large boot and low running costs – both 1.0-litre engines are capable of more higher than those of VW and SEAT.
Aside from that, the car is identical in all other respects, so you’ll enjoy fuel economy of around 60mpg, a 251-litre boot, cheap road Skoda Citigo hatchback tax and a good It’s mechanically identical to the safety rating. Leicester City: Can they handle Premier League title pressure?
Leicester City's win at Manchester City the most significant result so far in what is becoming a stunning story - means there is no hiding place for manager Claudio Ranieri's side. The Foxes' richly-deserved 3-1 victory in the battle of the top two at Etihad Stadium put them five points clear at the top of the Premier League and installed them as title favourites with every bookmaker. And it stripped away the last shield keeping Leicester under the radar, despite Ranieri's masterpiece of expectation management this season.
Can they handle the pressure?
The manner in which Leicester came to Manchester and won so convincingly on their biggest test of the season was designed to make even the doubters believe. It was an emphatic and mature performance that confirmed the tide of opinion is turning. Leicester are no longer
viewed as plucky underdogs but as a club in position to make history. Leicester can no longer portray themselves as being on a fantasy ride with nothing to lose at the end - there should now be disappointment if they do not win the title. So how will Leicester handle that potent mixture of pressure and expectation? Former Norwich City striker Chris Sutton outlined the dangers of underdogs being thrust to the front and feeling the weight of expectation. He recalled how Norwich City let an unlikely title chance slip in the 1992-93 season when they were a point clear with only six games left. Sutton told BBC Sport: “The longer you stay up there, and the closer you get to seeing it through, the harder it gets. We got through March and were back on the top of the table and it hit us. All of a sudden we started thinking about whether we could actually do it. “Everywhere we went in Norwich,

people would ask ‘can we win it?’ We were thinking ‘how are we still in the race?’ We started to wonder ‘what if we do win it?’ “It was a kind of pressure that was new to all of us - the manager Mike Walker and the players - and we faltered at the big moments,” he added. “We had two crunch games before Easter against the two other teams challenging and although we beat Aston Villa we lost at home to Manchester United, who had just gone four games without a win.” United went on to win the title and Norwich City finished third. Leicester forward Riyad Mahrez said: “We’re just going to keep dreaming, We’re going to fight for the title and see what we can do.” The pinch points may arrive - but there has not been a trace of evidence yet to suggest Leicester will crack.
Why can Leicester do it?
The first answer is simple. Leicester are the Premier League’s form team and have a healthy lead. While others such as
Tel 902 750 190 Manchester City and Arsenal falter, they are standing strong. Leicester, crucially, have no distractions. They can focus solely on the Premier League, while Arsenal and Manchester City have Champions League and domestic cup commitments. And what about their fixture list? Seven of their remaining games are at home and they will regard all as eminently winnable. After Arsenal away next weekend - and who is to say they cannot win there - they have the confidence to pick up points anywhere on their travels, although they face tough trips to Manchester United on Saturday 30 April and then to Chelsea on the final day of the season. There would be delicious irony in Ranieri standing in front of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, the man who sacked him in 2004, as a Premier League champion. Who will bet against it? Not, it seems, the bookies. http://www.bbc.com/
Super Bowl 50: Denver Broncos beat Carolina Panthers The Denver Broncos produced a defensive masterclass to upset the Carolina Panthers 24-10 and win Super Bowl 50. Carolina were heavy favourites, having lost only once all season and with the league’s Most Valuable Player of the season Cam Newton at quarterback. But Newton was smothered by the Broncos defence and gave up three turnovers, including one that led to a touchdown. That helped Denver, quarterbacked by veteran Peyton Manning, open a 10-0 lead early on and they never lost it. It had been rumoured the game would be 39-year-old Manning’s last, but he said afterwards he would “take time to reflect”. “It’s been an emotional week and it’s an emotional night,” he added. Newton did not have a good game, but he was not helped by an awful display by Carolina’s receivers, with Jerricho Cotchery guilty of two crucial drops. It’s a third Super Bowl title for the Broncos - after wins in 1997 and 1998 - while the Panthers are still waiting for their first. Broncos reaction “It’s very special,” said Manning. “This game was much like this season has been. It tested our toughness, resilience
our unselfishness.” Broncos linebacker DeMarcus Ware gave a lot of credit to Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. “He came in and figured out how to utilise the guys, utilise the talents,” he said. “He changed everything up to where we could be more aggressive and get to the passer, but also create a lot of havoc.” Panthers reaction “They just played better than us,” said Newton, a first round draft pick in 2011. “I don’t know what you want me to say. “They made more plays than us and that’s what it came down to. We turned the ball over, gave up sacks, threw errant passes. That’s it.” Defensive end Keony Ealy said the team would learn from the defeat. “It sucks, but I can’t dwell on it,” said Ealy, who tied the Super Bowl record with three sacks and became the first player to record multiple sacks and an interception in a Super Bowl. “The better team won. They showed up, they played. They didn’t make mistakes, we did make mistakes. We can’t do that.” Bbc.com
