Selling: Plusvalía tax - the old tax that we can no longer ignore. QUESTION: I understand that if I sell my property I need to think about the following expenses: solicitors fee, capital gains tax and plusvalía tax. What is plusvalía tax and how is it calculated? Answer. Up to recently this was a small tax when you sold or inherited, but now it can be a high amount and needs to be considered before the transaction. It is charged on the transfer of ownership of a property by sale, inheritance etc. . This tax is a local tax charged by your town hall on the increase in value of Urban land and should not be confused with capital gains tax. It is important to realise that the tax is charged on land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land. The rates of tax are set by each municipality and can vary widely between neighbouring municipalities. The tax is based on the increase in the official, that is to say the “Catastral”, value of the land which a property occupies. This is the same value that is used to set your local property tax or “IBI” and can be found on the bill for your “IBI” issued by your local ayuntamiento each year and is shown as the “valor del suelo”. The actual price at which a property changes hands, or the value attributed to it if is the subject of a gift or inheritance is irrelevant. Calculation:
The Plusvalia is calculated as a function of the catastral value of the land and the number of years of ownership (up to a maximum of 20 years). The higher the catastral value and the number of years of ownership, the higher the tax. On sale of a property it is the responsibility of the seller to pay the tax, but if the seller fails to pay this, responsibility may be passed to the buyer, who would then have to recuperate the money from the seller. If the property is being inherited or is the subject of some other type of gift it is the beneficiary or recipient of the property who is liable to pay the tax. Certain transactions are exempt from the Plusvalia Tax. The main ones which are likely to affect the general public are the transfer of property between spouses who are divorcing, or to children to comply with Court judgments, and “aportaciones” or transfers to companies in which spouses are the only shareholders which may be used for tax planning. Your town hall can advise you of the amount of Plusvalia that may be payable on a transaction involving your property, or in many cases it is possible to obtain the calculation “on line”. However, as I always write in concluding these articles, if in doubt take professional advice.

Students launch campaign against unpaid work experience
STUDENTS at a Madrid university have started a nationwide campaign against the practice of being forced to undertake work experience as part of their training – completely unpaid. “It’s shameful how, in Spain, numerous companies resort to taking on students who want to start out in the world of work and gradually learn about their chosen profession on the job, to gain experience, in order to get free labour,” says the petition on Change. org started by two undergraduates at the Complutense University. “It means we have to take on jobs without receiving any financial compensation whatsoever.” Graduate or undergraduate work experience ‘employees’ are euphemistically known as becarios, or ‘scholarship students’ – but the term is misleading because they do not receive a grant, or even their travel costs covered. Although not always a condition of passing a degree course, it is generally expected and accepted that during or just after college, students will join firms for a few months or a year or so as becarios to learn the trade. This encourages companies not to take on employees, since they know they can get a work experience
student instead and avoid having to pay anything, the campaigners say. Both are studying media and say they are speaking as ‘journalists, future journalists and communications media professionals in general’ but that they are ‘conscious that many other professions also suffer from these abusive practices’. The petition has been addressed to the Complutense itself, calling for it to stop ‘offering unpaid work’, and are urging as many public organisms as possible to sign it. They have set up the hashtag #GratisNoTrabajo (‘I’m not working for free’) and, at the time of publication, had already netted 77,750 signatures. “In these tough times, a culture of exploitation in the workplace has become rife in Spain, and serves as an excuse for firms to t a k e on students eager to work, for little or no pay,” the petition concludes. thinkspain

Exploring the wonders of the Cabo de Gato with the “Dames in Spain”On Monday 16th May. The Dames in Spain enjoyed a wonderful day trip to this beautiful area of Almeria, the Cabo de Gato. A place to see wildlife, beautiful beaches and coves. The weather was perfect and the day out was enjoyed by everyone, a mixed group of Dames & guests. Stopping at Las Salinas, the coastal part are the salt mines of the Cabo de Gata where in the nearby natural lakes we could see many nesting birds including the pink flamingo, The Old Fortress of the Guardia Civil, the Church and the Lighthouse which is the most south western point of the Iberian Peninsula, having a
magnificent panoramic view over the cliffs. Finally ending at La Isleta for a splendid lunch. After resting and enjoying the scenery there, we had a leisurely drive back along the coast road, back to Mojacar. This is such a beautiful area to visit and we all had a happy full day out. 20th June is the next event, our Summer Lunch at Sottocasa Mojacar Playa 18 euros. This is open to members and guests. An 18-year-old girl is in a serious condition after falling off a fifth floor balcony while taking a selfie. The girl fell off the balcony in Girona, northwestern Spain, on Thursday while attempting to take a photo of herself on her mobile phone. She was rushed to Josep Trueta hospital, where she remains in a “serious condition” police sources told Europa Press. She was on the top floor of the building when she stepped on a false ceiling and plummeted towards the ground. Her fall was broken by a pile of rubbish. The girl is badly bruised and has sustained injuries to her lower back but is reported to be in stable condition. It is not the first serious

accident that has been caused by people taking selfies. Italy has seen a spate of selfie-related deaths, including a German tourist who fell to his death while attempting to take a photo of himself in the mountains and an Italian teenager who slipped while taking a selfie on a cliff and plummeted to the rocks 20 metres below. Another Italian teen ended up in a coma after falling from a fence outside Rome’s Colosseum while attempting a selfie, and a priceless statue was left literally legless after a foreign student attempted to take a selfie with the artwork, but ended up damaging it. thelocal

Security fears hit Thomas Cook as tourists choose Spain over Turkey
Security fears hit Thomas Cook as tourists choose Spain over Turkey Thomas Cook said its summer bookings fell as security concerns meant more holidaymakers opted for breaks in Spain over Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt, outstripping its efforts to adjust flights. Despite shifting 1.2 million airline seats from the eastern to the western Mediterranean, the British travel operator said bookings were down by 5% and full-year profit would now be at the bottom end of market forecasts. Thomas Cook shares dropped 19% to a three-year low of 72 pence after its first-half results, on a day travel stocks fell after the disappearance of an EgyptAir flight. Chief Executive Peter Fankhauser said Turkey, its second most popular destination last year, had not recovered as he had hoped after an attack on tourists in Istanbul in January. "This has had a particular impact on our German airlines business, which is the market leader into Turkey." The last update from Thomas Cook in March, which sent its shares to a previous 3-year low, came on the same day as explosions in Brussels. Fankhauser said holiday bookings in Belgium had come "to a standstill" as a result. Thomas Cook shifted
airline seats from Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt to the Canaries, Balearics and mainland Spain where it had found extra hotel rooms, but it was not enough to compensate. Holidaymakers could turn to Turkey at the last minute, Fankhauser said. "There is no late market in Spain, because Spain is filling up extremely fast, and then there may be a shift back into Turkey," he said. Thomas Cook's rival TUI said earlier this month its bookings were up 1%, with demand strong. "We are suffering a bit more (than rivals) because we are much bigger (in Turkey) than other competitors," Fankhauser said. "We are happy with the demand outside Turkey, we are up 6% if you take Turkey out." Thomas Cook said operating profit for its year to end-March 2017 would be between 310 million and 335 million pounds. Analysts have forecast a range of 310 million to 359 million. First half revenue grew slightly to 2.67 billion pounds, it said, and an underlying operating loss narrowed by 5% to 163 million pounds thanks to an improvement in margins. It said it continued to expect to pay a dividend this year. tumbit.com

MOJÁCAR NURSERY SCHOOL PUPILS FIRST VISIT TO PRIMARY SCHOOL
The final year children of the “Garabatos” municipal nursery made their first visit to see the facilities of the town’s Bartolome Flores School where they will begin their first preschool year next September. 25 children, aged between two and three years, made their first contact with what will be their future school, accompanied by their tutors and Raquel Belmonte, Mojácar Councillor for infants and youth. LUA MOJACAR BEACH CLUB IS THE IDEAL PLACE FOR BOTH LOVERS OF THE SUN AND COOL BREEZEY NIGHTS. Our restaurant has magnificent views of the beach, it serve’s wonderful Traditional Cuisine, Seafood, Mediterranean and International. We also have a full menu served during the day, afternoon and evening. You can also enjoy an extensive range of cocktails prepared by our attentive staff and accompanied by the best music. INFO & RESERVATIONS 950 47 26 43 LUA Mediterranean Avenue, MOJACAR PLAYA NUMBER 6B
The children were welcomed by the director, Francis Baraza, who showed them the classrooms, playground, sports facilities and music class, where they had fun singing and playing different instruments. They were also introduced to new teachers, and shown the classrooms told a little bit about the teaching methods that will make up this new phase of their studies. This gradual introduction is very important for infants who, at an early age, have to leave their childlike routine and adapt to life in the bigger school. Raquel Belmonte feels that if the children are already familiar with their new surroundings and teachers at the beginning of the school
year, it greatly reduces any feeling of insecurity or anxiety that they may have. She said, “Mojácar Town Council gives great importance to the little ones and their education. We try to do everything in our power to ensure a successful start to what for them, is a new challenge.” In the municipal nursery “Garabatos”, the sixty children that attend the facility are being integrated according to their age to develop their social skills, knowledge of the environment and other mental and psychical activities which form the framework for their future development.

Spain’s foreign minister says Colombian authorities are trying to confirm whether a journalist who went missing over the weekend in a lawless region of Colombia was kidnapped. Jose Manuel GarciaMargallo told reporters in Brussels Monday that Spanish officials are in contact with Colombian authorities trying to find Salud HernandezMora. She is a longtime correspondent for Spain’s El Mundo newspaper and a columnist for the Bogota daily El Tiempo Colombia’s military is searching for HernandezMora, who was on assignment in El Tarra in the volatile Catatumbo region of northern Colombia. Witnesses told the newspaper that she was last seen Saturday arguing with an unidentified man before taking a motorcycle to an unknown destination. The town’s mayor said it is possible she was taken hostage. Garcia-Margallo says Hernandez-Mora also holds Colombian citizenship.

Buenos días!
We are Jan and Tineke. Originally from the Netherlands, Tineke worked as a nurse before starting her own beauty salon. Jan had an interesting job as ‘flying doctor’ at a renowned car manufacturer. When he lost his job due to reorganisation within the company, we jumped at the opportunity to do what we had always dreamt of doing: Starting a Casa Rural in Spain! At Más Solana we aim to create the ultimate holiday vibes. We offer four separate apartments, accommodating from two to eight guests. Breakfast, lunch and supper are served upon request and an occasional drink can be taken from our honesty bar. We also offer wonderful massages, facial treatments and pedicures. Other great ways to relax are a few hours in the sauna or hot tub or both! You can also book these wellness treatments without staying overnight – anything is possible! Surrounding the Casa, we have created various cosy spots to sit and enjoy the sun. We have beautiful panoramic views, whether you’re in the garden or at the poolside. Please do check out our website or pay us a visit, we hope to see you soon at Más Solana! Gladrags 10th Year Trading Party
Tuesday May 10th 2016 marked the 10th year of trading for Gladrags Boutique in Calle Malaga in Albox. A remarkable success for any business, and an occasion that couldn´t go without a celebration. Although the day started with the threat of rain, it didn´t dampen any spirits and Gladrags was soon heaving with Ladies wanting to help Jenni celebrate with Bubbly and individual Birthday cakes. The ladies were also eager to be the first to view the New High Summer Collections. These included the very Popular French designs of Lara Ethnics, a label that is exclusive to Gladrags in Albox and offers lightweight clothes all made from breathable material and an amazing selection of bright Summer colours and funky patterns, ideal for the coming Hot Summer months. From what I saw on the day it was all very well received as items were flying off the shelves, with many lines selling out, but Jenni was quick to reassure her loyal customers that she would endeavour to get more of this Fabulous Collection in the boutique within a week - now how´s that for service? Jenni was also happy and pleased to share the day with Gladrags previous owner Margaret Norman of which much of the 10 year success of the business is attributed to. I saw lots of new faces throughout the day so I think it goes without saying that word is definitely spreading about what a fantastic, one stop shop Gladrags Boutique is. A local shop that offers everything you need to have you looking amazing from head to toe. It also helps that Jenni is more than happy to share her time and expertise with anyone visiting to ensure they are happy with any purchases made. So Cheers Gladrags and Congratulations.....Here is to the next 10 years!

This Is What Happens When You Don't Drink Enough Water
Besides the fact that you'd literally die without it, there are many, MANY imperative reasons to drink water frequently, every single day. It starts out pretty mild - you might feel thirsty and have a dry mouth. But the longterm effects of not drinking enough water not only have an effect on your weight (in a bad way), but they're also extremely dangerous and life-threatening. Here's what happens to your body. Milder Symptoms Even mild dehydration has strong effects. Here's how you'll feel with a lack of H2O (hint: it's really not fun). Fatigue, tiredness, sleepiness Headache Constipation Dizziness Mood change, irritability, increased anxiety Sunken eyes Shriveled skin Muscle cramps Joint aches Severe Symptoms If things get worse, so do your symptoms. These are the "go to the hospital" signs. Low blood pressure, with a rapid heartbeat Fever Delirium, unconsciousness Severe diarrhea and/or vomiting Inability to keep fluids down Latent Effects Consistently not drinking enough water for an extended period of time has its effect as well. Although you may brush off the milder side effects, your body is still suffering - and several of these have a significant bearing on weight gain. Low water, slow metabolism. Your body's ability to remove waste and detoxify is inhibited. In addition, your metabolism is slower without water. One study found

that drinking 16 ounces of water daily increases your metabolic rate by 30 percent. Guys. That's literally ONE standard-size water bottle. JUST DRINK IT. Increased hunger. When you're somewhat dehydrated, your body confuses it for hunger, causing you to eat when you don't need to. Read: weight gain. Slowed circulation, irregular temperature. Your CV system suffers, and your equilibrium is totally out of whack. Digestion problems. That constipation we talked about becomes a regular thing. Not fun. Also not great for weight loss. General fatigue. Same goes for your energy levels. You'll constantly feel tired, unable (or unwilling) to exercise, and unable to concentrate. Increased blood sugar. Your body needs water to break down sugar. If you're diabetic, this is especially dangerous. Severe Long-Term Effects Now for the worst of it. Yes, it's terrible that dehydration can make you gain weight (or keep you from losing it), but there are some bigger issues at hand. If you're truly neglecting your water intake, this should likely help you get on track. Here's what happens to your body when you don't get enough water. Heat injury Brain swelling Seizures Hypovolemic shock Kidney failure Coma and death Now go get yourself a water bottle and FILL. IT. UP. http://www.msn.com

A history of Moorish Spain (VI) 891AD; although Abdullah ibn Mohammad al – Umawi Emir of Cordoba had almost defeated his nemesis Umar ibn Hafsun by slaying his Christian army; Ibn Hafsun slowly recovered all lost territory; eventually stretching from Seville to Malaga and almost to Valencia. To strengthen his hand; Ibn Hafsun pledged loyalty to the Fatimid’s who ruled over a huge swathe of North Africa from modern day Morocco as far as Egypt. Abdullah’s’ kingdom by contrast had shrunk to just around Cordoba so he agreed a peace treaty with Ibn Hafsun in 911 only for war to break out again the next year when Abdullah died. Years before; Emir Abdullah had designated the eldest of his four sons’ as successor. Another son promptly murdered him, so in turn Abdullah executed him. The son of the murdered son became a favourite of Abdullah where he grew up in one of the towers of Abdullah’s castle; a luxury denied to Abdullah’s squabbling children. Sometimes Abdullah allowed his grandson to sit on the throne and importantly passed the royal ring to the now twenty year old on his deathbed in 912. The day after his death, his grandson was proclaimed as Emir and Caliph of Cordoba; Abdar ar Rahman III ruled for the next 50 years until 961. Rahman III lost no time in meticulously planning the recapture of the vast swathes of land his grandfather

Mount Everest: Thirty climbers sick on Everest after three deaths
About 30 climbers have suffered frostbite or become ill on Mount Everest after three others died, apparently from altitude sickness. Two Indian climbers have also been reported missing in the mountain's so-called "death zone" near the summit. However the mountain's most successful female climber reached the summit for the seventh time on Friday. Experts say it is not unusual for altitude sickness to claim some lives on Everest. But this is the first climbing season for two years, after an earthquake in Nepal killed at least 18 people on the mountain last year and 16 guides were killed in an avalanche in 2014, leading to protests that prematurely ended that season. With the mountain open again, climbers have been taking advantage of good conditions in large numbers, with nearly 400 reaching the summit from the Nepalese side since 11 May. There have been successful ascents from the Chinese side too, including Lhakpa Sherpa, a Nepalese woman now living permanently in the US and working in a convenience store in Connecticut, who reached the peak from Tibet on Friday - breaking her own record for the most Everest climbs by a woman. But the weekend's dead and missing have highlighted the dangers of the world's highest mountain. Indian Subhash Paul, who died on Monday, has become the latest casualty of the season. He died overnight as Sherpa guides were helping
him down the mountain. Dutch climber Eric Ary Arnold died on Friday, after reaching the summit, while on Saturday, 34-year-old Australian woman Maria Strydom, who was born in South Africa, also died while descending from the peak. "There was never a close call before this time," said Aletta Newman, Maria Strydom's sister. "They were always extremely well-prepared, they trained really, really hard before each event that they did. There was never any incident before this one." Indian climbers Paresh Nath and Goutam Ghosh went missing on Saturday, Wangchu Sherpa from the Trekking Camp Nepal agency in Kathmandu told the Associated Press. Speaking to the BBC, Gyanendra Shrestha, a Nepalese official at Everest Base Camp, said snow blindness, altitude sickness and fatigue are very common health issues at high altitudes, although most people recover once they descend the mountain. Most climbers are now beginning their climb down from the higher camps as spring climbing season slowly comes to an end, according to an official at the Department of Tourism. Bbc.com

had lost to Ibn Hafsun. In January 913; Badr his eunuch army commander launched a successful attack on Ecija castle; midway between Cordoba and Seville. The defensive walls were destroyed leaving enough buildings intact to house a garrison there ready for further sorties. The following spring after much preparation; Emir Rahman III personally led an attack on Jaen and Elvira. Concurrently another army marched south from Cordoba to retake Malaga, this action split Ibn Hafsun’s territory in two. Rahman III then moved his forces south into Almeria, taking Finana then Juviles in the Alpujarras, Granada. Near to the modern day town of Trevelez now famed for its ham; in those days Juviles was the centre of the silk industry. Rahman III destroyed all the crops, cut off the water supply and built a huge platform to mount his siege engines on to bombard the castle perched 1200m up. Ibn Hafsuns’s soldiers who surrendered were spared and enlisted into Rahman III’s army. The fifty-five that didn’t were beheaded. For another three months Rahman III’s forces continued retaking land and hostages; forcing the defeated to send tribute back to Cordoba to prove their submission and new allegiance to the
Emir. After Rahman III’s first victory in 913 at Ecija; the new garrison it accommodated marched west to Seville and Carmona to sue for their submission. Incidentally, Ecija once had one of the largest and intact Roman city ruins; until 1998 anyway when - remember the name of Mayor Julian Alvarez Pernia; he bulldozed the lot to create a car park. Moving again back 1000 years; Seville refused to surrender but the Lord of Carmona took advantage of the two cities rivalry throwing his lot in with the attackers. Seville was then put under siege and appealed to Ibn Hafsun for reinforcements. Again Rahman III’s strategic planning paid off as Ibn Hafsun and his forces were ambushed and the survivors fled to Bobastro his de facto capital. Seville finally fell in December 913 and the treacherous Lord of Carmona took his place as Vizier of Seville; for one day only as it happened because Rahman III discovered that he’d secretly continued to help Seville and so was imprisoned where he died two years later.

Treasury: Brexit could cause 18% house price crash
A Brexit vote would cause house prices to crash by between 10 and 18% in two years, the Treasury has warned. In an analysis paper the Treasury said the shock of leaving the EU would put the UK in recession and in the worst-case scenario lead to 820,000 jobs being lost and GDP being 6% lower in two years. With a joint article in The Telegraph, Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne said: “This would be, for the first time in our history, a recession brought on ourselves: a DIY recession. “As the Bank of England has said, as the IMF has underlined, and now as the Treasury has confirmed: the shock of walking out of Europe would tip the economy into reverse.” The Treasury split its analysis into a ‘shock scenario’ and a worst-case ‘severe shock scenario’. With the former ‘cautious’ prediction, which assumes that the UK will establish a bilateral trade agreement with the EU, the Treasury predicted house prices to fall by 10%, 520,000 jobs being lost and GDP being 3.6% lower. The “severe shock” scenario, which included the 18% house price fall prediction, was based on what would happen if the UK left the EU’s single market and defaulted to World Trade Organization membership. In response Vote Leave’s Iain Duncan Smith accused the Treasury of having a “deeply biased view of the future”. And Patrick Minford of the Economists for Brexit group told the BBC: “At the heart of the Treasury calculations lies a serious attempt to deceive the British people. “The key to any calculation lies in the assumptions made: garbage in, garbage out. “The Treasury has put garbage in for the long-term effects of Brexit. These in turn underpin its forecasts of short term recession.” mortgageintroducer.com

Latest index figures show Spanish property prices are stable, but rents down
Average residential property prices in Spain have remained stable, rising 0.1% in April compared to a year ago, according to the latest index data to be published. But the April increase is more moderate than the year on year growth recorded in March and February at 0.8% and 2.1% respectively, the data from real estate appraisal firm Tinsa shows. However the figures also show that between January and April, house prices have accumulated an average increase of 1.9% and compared to the peak of the market in 2007 they are down 41.1%, a level similar to the summer of 2003. A breakdown of the figures show that the biggest year on year price increase was on the Mediterranean Coast with growth of 4.4%. Prices in metropolitan regions were unchanged year on year and in large cities they were down 0.2%. The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, where prices have been rising, saw a fall of 0.4% and the other municipalities group recorded a fall of 0.9% but this group had the biggest increase in prices between January and April at 3.8%. Another set of figures show that compared with the end of 2015 prices are up more substantially, with growth of 3.8% in other municipalities in the first quarter of 2016, up 2.9% in the Balearic and Canary Islands, up 2.7%
on the Mediterranean coast, up 1.1% in metropolitan areas and up 0.7% in large cities. While prices are down overall by 41.1% compared to the peak of the market, this decline varies according to location. It is down 30.6% in the Balearic and Canary Islands, down 35.8% in other municipalities, down 46.7% on the Mediterranean coast, down 45% in large cities and down 44.4% in metropolitan areas. Separate figures from the National Statistics Institute show that average rents in Spain were down 0.1% in April year on year. It means that rents have now fallen for 37 months in a row. But the latest decline is more moderate than the 0.2% recorded in March while for the first four months of the year rents are up 0.1% and there is regional variations. Rents in Galicia increased by 0.4%, were up 0.3% in the Balearic Islands, up 0.2% in Navarre, Murcia, Andalucia, Catalonia and Melilla, but were unchanged in Cantabria. But a number of regions saw declines, including a fall of 1.9% in La Rioja, down 0.6% in Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura and the Basque Country. Madrid record rental fall of 0.5%, while rents were down 0.3% in Asturias, by 0.2% in Aragón and Ceuta and by 0.1% in Valencia and the Canary Islands. http://www.propertywire.com

El Día de lameaning. Constitución
Defining the fundamental rights of the Alquerian people became the next challenge for the fledgling Republic. After their expulsion from Spain the people of Alqueria began setting up business for themselves. With the two barrios of the village constantly engaged in a state of undeclared warfare the task looked formidable. The Constitution of the Republic of Alqueria was however drafted with little or no dissent. It is a two page document. One page compiled by the Hill People and the other by the Newcomers. The clauses on page one contradicted those on page two but that didn’t seem to matter in fact it was the strength of the document. If something was deemed as unconstitutional on one page, simply referring to the relevant clause on the other made it permissible. Nothing was unconstitutional, it meant all things to all villagers, everything and anything was legal and therefore possible. A new impetus was given to the Government. Manuela, the Minister of Culture began taking her duties seriously. To assess the cultural needs of her people she personally interviewed a section of the population. This section however turned out to be the younger and fitter men of the village. The consultations took place on her settee, giving the phrase ‘reproduction furniture’ a whole new
The people of Alqueria were so pleased with their handiwork they declared a public holiday, ‘El Día de la Constitución’. At least one half of the village did. The other half were to have their Día de la Constitución six months hence. They still celebrated the day though, calling it ‘No El Día de la Constitución’. A fiesta was organised with tables laden with food and drink erected in the village plaza. El Enveneno, the town’s gourmet chef prepared a pig roast. He could do some surprising things with a pig, at least they surprised the pig. The fiesta soon degenerated into the usual sectarian brawl. The Hill People, defending the Bar La Casa Devante launched fusillades of bread rolls, olives and rocks at the Newcomers who lay siege to the Plaza. The overturned tables acted as barricades as the alcohol soaked belligerents exchanged volleys. José Cabrasilbido, who was both the local and national policeman was powerless to act. According to the constitution the fracas was both legal and illegal, depending on which page one referred to. The state of constitutional anarchy offered a degree of freedom unknown in the more traditional democracies. Is this level of emancipation envied by more conservative peoples? Would they follow the Alquerian example? Are they even remotely interested?
The Portacabin
With a quizzical look I walked into Oncology and held up my recently plastered arm. ‘Ah! said Nursie #1. ‘Oh! said Nursie #2. ‘You’ll have to see the Oncologist.’ I had a feeling my arm was going to cause trouble. However, as if by teleportation Victoria Eugenia, she of the studious spectacles and the degree in Oncology arrived. ‘You will have to have a port-a-cath fitted. I will make you an appointment with General Surgery.’ She uttered without hesitation. ‘A what?’ queried Pete. ‘A portacabin?’ So a portacabin it became! I attended General Surgery and proffered my magic piece of paper bearing the words port-a-cath. ‘Ah!’ said Diego, for whom port-a-caths hold no mystery. ‘Go to Demanda Cirugia, tell them to put you on the Priority list. It must be done within a week ’ I went. ‘No, we don’t do that operation at this Hospital. You have to go to General Surgery for them to make an appointment.’ ‘I’ve just come from General Surgery. You do do the operation here.’ For some minutes we argued the toss. I stood as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar outside, while inside the office an ever-increasing number of Receptionists assured me that the operation was not done here, and I’d have to go to General Surgery for them to make the appointment. I made it obvious that they were not going to get their window back anytime soon, and as a last-ditch attempt to get rid of me one resorted to the Folder of Available Services. ‘Yes, port-a-cath. We’ll ring you.’ She said in a no-fault-admitted kind of
By Jos Biggs
josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk voice. We’ll ring you is hospital-speak for Go away and stop cluttering up our window. I didn’t believe her. I wished to remove any possibility of doubt surrounding this appointment. ‘General Surgery wants me on the Priority List.’ ‘Your name?’ I felt like asking how I could be on a priority list waiting for a phone call if they didn’t know my name, but instead I sweetly indicated my name, health card number, hospital case number, mobile number and address all printed on the magic piece of paper given to me by General Surgery. ‘You are on the Priority List. We’ll ring you.’ I felt like asking whether that would be before or after Hell froze over, but thought better of it. Instead I opted for an unctuous but insincere Gracia, and the certain knowledge that it was going to be a long week!
‘HARMONY OF THE SEAS’ THE WORLD’S BIGGEST CRUISE SHIP – A FLOATING CITY!
Here are some fascination and certainly interesting facts and figures appertaining to the world’s biggest and most costly cruise liner… SPECIFIC FACTS • Length: 1,188 feet (almost five large aircraft set in a line) • Width: 215 feet (the average length of a full-size football pitch) • Weight: 227,000 tons • Height: 20 feet (as high as seven London buses stacked on top of one another, or three times as high as Buckingham Palace) • Normal cruising speed: 22 knots (approx.. 40.7kph or 25.3mph) • Number of decks: 18 (sixteen for passengers and guests) • Number of restaurants: 16 • People capacity: 8,880 (6,780 passengers and 2,100 crew members) • Cost to build/construct/equip: £800 million FOOD & DRINK FACTS Not all the food on a cruise ship will be consumed during the voyage. The Harmony of the Seas, at full capacity, is scheduled to feed three meals a day to almost 6,800 passengers and over 2,000 officers and crew, comparable to the provisions that any reasonable sized town might consume in one week. The Mojito History
Havana, Cuba, is the birthplace of the Mojito, although the exact origin of this classic cocktail is the subject of debate. One story traces the Mojito to a similar 16th century drink known as “El Drake”, after Francis Drake. In 1586, after his successful raid at Cartagena de Indias Drake’s ships sailed towards Havana but there was an epidemic of dysentery and scurvy on board. It was known that the local South American Indians had remedies for various tropical illnesses; so a small boarding party went ashore on Cuba and came back with ingredients for a medicine which was effective. The ingredients were aguardiente de caña (translates as fire water, a crude form of rum from sugar cane) added with local tropical ingredients; lime, sugarcane juice and mint. Drinking lime juice in itself would have been a great help in staving off scurvy and dysentery. Tafia/Rum was used as soon as it became widely available to the British (ca. 1650). Mint, lime and sugar were also helpful in hiding the harsh taste of this spirit. While this drink was not called a Mojito at this time, it was still the original combination of these ingredients. Some historians contend that African slaves who worked in the Cuban sugar cane fields during the 19th century were instrumental in the cocktail’s origin. Guarapo, the sugar cane juice often used in Mojitos, was a popular drink amongst the slaves who helped coin the name of the sweet nectar. It never originally contained lime juice. There are several theories behind the origin of the name Mojito; one such theory holds that name relates to mojo, a Cuban seasoning made from lime and used to flavour dishes. Another theory is that the name Mojito is simply a derivative of mojadito (Spanish for “a little wet”) or simply the diminutive of mojado (“wet”). Due to the vast influence of immigration from the Canary Islands, the term probably came from the mojo creole marinades adapted in Cuba using citrus vs traditional Isleno types. The Mojito has routinely been presented as a favorite drink of author Ernest Hemingway. It has also often been said that Ernest Hemingway made the bar called La Bodeguita del Medio famous as he became one of its regulars and wrote “My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita.” This expression in English can be read on the wall of the bar today, handwritten and signed in his name, although Hemingway biographers have expressed doubts about such patronage and about the author’s taste for mojitos. La Bodeguita del Medio is more known for their food rather than drink. A report created in 2014 states that the Mojito is now the most popular cocktail in Britain.

Ryanair is cutting fares to counter terrorism fears
Top European airline Ryanair will slash fares in the coming months to keep people flying after a recent spate of terror attacks. Ryanair (RYAAY) CEO Michael O’Leary told CNNMoney that attacks in Brussels and Paris, combined with worries that terrorists brought down EgyptAir flight 804 over the Mediterranean last week, could lead some people to stay at home. But low fares would persuade them to get back out again. “[When] people become a little bit more reluctant, we roll out lower prices and more stimulatory airfares, and people respond by snapping up those cheap prices,” he told CNNMoney’s Nina dos Santos. “We are lowering fares. We’ll continue to lower airfares and keep people flying, not just this summer but for the remainder of the year as well.” The company expects average airfares in the year to March 2017 to decline by 7%, with particularly hefty discounts in the autumn and winter periods. Ryanair is not alone in experiencing disruption to its business. EasyJet (ESYJY), Lufthansa (DLAKF) and International Airlines Group, which owns British Airways and Iberia, have all suffered a hit to sales as passengers reconsidered travel plans because of security concerns. Analysts say cutting prices will stoke demand, but not everyone is convinced that customers who are truly concerned about terrorism will be persuaded to fly again. The low fares may simply stimulate demand among people who weren’t too worried in the first place. “I think Ryanair’s strategy of lowering fares works

twofold by both spurring demand from travelers and also by widening the gap between Ryanair fares and its competitors,” said David Holohan, chief investment officer at Merrion Capital Group. Ryanair has become the biggest airline in Europe by offering cutthroat prices. More than 106 million people flew with the company in the year to March. That was up 18% on the previous year. The average Ryanair flight cost €46.67 ($52.33) in 2015-16. Ryanair was forced to cancel 500 flights, affecting up to 95,000 people, in the first few months of 2016 due to the Brussels terrorist attacks and strikes by air traffic control workers in Europe. However, that represents a tiny dent in the business. “It’s a rounding error,” said Mark Simpson, an airline analyst at Goodbody Stockbrokers. http://money.cnn.com
National Police Dismantle Marijuana Plantation
Officers of the National Police in El Ejido have dismantled a plantation of marijuana and arrested two people, a married couple, who managed the indoor plantation in the town of Roquetas de Mar. The police were able to seize 500 dried plants, eleven and a half grams of cocaine, seven and a half grams of heroin, 39 halogen lamps, air filters, turbines , fertilizers and other related cultivation and trafficking of narcotics instruments. The operation began when officers at a routine police checkpoint intercepted a vehicle and identified the driver as male. Inside the car they found numerous bottles of special fertilizer for growing marijuana. Given these facts, the police officers proceeded to track the vehicle to a house in the neighborhood of Marin Cortijo in the town of Roquetas de Mar. The police set up surveillance near to where the driver of the detained car lived and found that he and his wife were tending to a marijuana plantation installed in the annex of their house. The husband

and wife were then arrested. The detainees, who were charged with an alleged crime of drug trafficking and theft of electric power were brought before the magistrate in Roquetas de Mar. They were later released but are awaiting trial. teleprensa.com

Ready for a summertime game of catch with your favorite four-legged friend? Not so fast. If you're feeling the heat, you can bet your dog is, too. And for him, overheating can be dangerous. "Heatstroke is by far the greatest concern," A University study found that 50% of canines with heatstroke won't survive. Also known as hyperthermia, heatstroke happens when a dog's body temperature rises above 106 F. Normal ways your pal's body cools off, like panting, can’t control it when it’s that high. Warning signs include fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, and, at the worst, confusion and seizures. Here's how to keep your dog cool and healthy all summer long, and get in a few games of outdoor catch with him while you're at it. The No. 1 sign that a dog's core temperature is getting too high is fatigue, if you're out for a hike with your dog on a hot day and he's searching for every shady spot to lie down in, turn around and carry him home. If you’re worried that he’s overheated, you can use a rectal thermometer to check his temperature when you get home. Don't let the temperature fool you. Canines can get too hot in weather as low as 80 degrees. Add in humidity and exercise, and it could be a recipe for disaster. If you can't comfortably sit outside for an extended period of time, then don't let your dog do it, either. Change your walking time. Your buddy still needs activity in the summer, but it's best to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Try going early in the morning or late at night after the sun has set. Don't give your dog a haircut. You may be tempted to shave your pup's thick hair in an effort to cool him off for the summer, it could do more harm than good. A dog's coat provides a buffer to help him regulate his body temperature. A trim won’t help him handle the heat. It could make him more likely to get a sunburn, too. Don't use ice. If your dog shows symptoms of heatstroke, wet him down with room-temperature water and put him in front of a fan. Your first instinct might be to pack ice packs around him or cool him off as quickly as possible, but the cold causes his blood vessels to constrict, and when they constrict they can't [get rid of] heat. Call your vet and take your dog in right away for treatment.

Book Review
Night Music by Jojo Moyes
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“There was nothing gentle about grief. It launched itself at you like a rogue wave on the seafront, flooding you, threatening to pull you under.” This is Moyes’ sixth book. She has an unusual Christian name doesn’t she? Her parents were artists and named her after a famous Beatles’ song. But I’m sure you probably knew that! The two main female characters are strong and tough although we see their vulnerabilities and plenty of tears. They are meant to be very different, one more Mother Earth, typically a home-maker, the other a professional musician who has chosen a career before her husband and family. Do they have anything in common? The Spanish house and betrayal by the men they loved. After a lot of soul-searching and intensity they both have second chances. Isabel moves on at an alarming rate unlike Laura who relished the opportunity to be loved by a faithful and honest man only to be drawn back to her pathetic, unfaithful wreck of a husband. Laura McCarthy is a wonderful woman, late thirties, handsome, lean and agile. She had been married to Matt for 18 years. Her mother had disapproved of the marriage. She had warned Laura that he was unsuitable and Laura had invested a lot of money into the marriage to enable them to buy property and land. She loved Matt in spite of his flings. They had a level-headed and decent boy called Anthony who disliked his father’s lies and philandering. Laura had been looking after Samuel Frederick Pottisworth for 9 years, running after him and cooking for him. He was a despicable man who leered and made suggestive comments about her clothes and figure. He had promised the McCarthys his Spanish house when he died to show his gratitude and this kept Laura and Matt going. Matt had already had plans drawn up concerning renovation and extensions. As for Laura she had mentally dressed the windows and recovered every inch of the floor. She knew exactly how the house would look when it was hers. Being able to move into this grand house would be enough to show her parents that she had made the right decision in marrying Matt. Everything would be okay. An unexpected stroke of luck meant that Pottisworth died sooner than later. At his funeral, just as the McCarthys were celebrating their good fortune, the solicitor, Derek Wendell drops the bombshell-the old man had not made a will and there was one remaining relative who would inherit the house. Laura’s world seem to fall away “ like the segment of an orange.” Isabel Delancey was a professional violinist, in fact she had worked her way up to become lead violinist in the City Symphonia. Music had been her obsession and had taken priority to boys, marriage and families. Whilst trying to establish her career at the age of 20 she had unexpectedly fallen in love with a French man

12 years her senior, recently divorced. Like Laura, her parents disapproved. Even the vicar made remarks about the number of mistresses she would have to tolerate. You’ll understand the irony of this remark once you read the book. Impulsively she married and became pregnant after her honeymoon. Kitty was born then later, Thierry. She wasn’t cut out to be a mother and persuaded Laurent to employ Mary as a nanny, cook and general housewife. This released her from the guilt and pressures of domesticity so that she could travel to Europe and play. Laurent had died suddenly in a car crash more than 9 months ago and Mr Cartwright, her solicitor informed her that her late husband had had debts and that downsizing might be the only option. Or perhaps she would sell her precious violin? Isabel’s choice? Sell the house and break her children’s heart or sell her violin and break her own? Not easy. Kitty was now 15 and Thierry 8. They had had a privileged lifestyle, having had every affordable luxury possible. That was going to change. Isabel felt a sense of amputation as she tried to blot out the encroaching grief. Mountains of bills, unopened letters gathered dust. Her grief was so consuming she couldn’t deal with practical matters. Kitty opened one of the letters and thought someone was playing a joke on them. She told her mother that someone had left Isabel a house! Would this solve Isabel’s financial difficulty or would it create more heartache? The house was in Norfolk. Isabel had fond memories of visiting this glorious place when she attended a garden party as a child. She did not know the history behind that house particularly McCarthy’s obsession to own the house to get revenge for the way the Pottisworths had destroyed his father. Isabel Delancey proves to be an easy target for a determined Matt. But there are surprises in store and some happy endings. I call it pure unadulterated delight. Publisher: Hodder and Stoughton. ISBN: 978-0340-895962. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor.

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy will miss England’s friendly against Australia on Friday - because he is getting married just two days before. The 29-year-old postponed his wedding last year and then moved it from June so he could play at Euro 2016. England manager Roy Hodgson said Vardy “deserves” time off to get married. Vardy, who scored the winner as England beat Turkey 2-1 on Sunday, said: “The boss has given me Wednesday off but I’ll be back training after that.” Hodgson added: “I don’t think his place in the team or the squad at the moment is under enormous threat and we do have other players that we need to look at.” Vardy, who scored 24 Premier League goals to help Leicester win the title, started the victory over Turkey at Etihad Stadium on the left of a front three. He later moved into the centre and scored the winner after Tottenham striker Harry Kane had given England an early lead. England face Australia at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light in the second of two
warm-up games for the European Championships in France. England also face Portugal at Wembley on 2 June but Hodgson must cut his preliminary squad of 26 by three before the 31 May deadline. Players from Manchester United and Liverpool will join the squad on Monday. United were in FA Cup final action on Saturday, while Liverpool had played and lost in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Marcus Rashford, United’s 18-year-old striker, impressed in the FA Cup win against Crystal Palace but suffered a knee problem. “We believe it is not a serious injury but he obviously took a nasty knock and we’ll have to wait and see how he turns up,” said Hodgson. Barca complete League and Cup Double
Lorenzo pips Marc Marquez in Italian classic Defending champion Jorge Lorenzo extended his lead in the MotoGP standings to 10 points after a dramatic victory at the Italian Grand Prix. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who leaves Yamaha at the end of the season to join Ducati, held off compatriot Marc Marquez by 0.019 seconds in Mugello. Local hero Valentino Rossi, who was on pole, encountered a mechanical problem on lap eight and soon retired. The Italian, 37, is now 37 points behind Lorenzo with 12 races remaining. Lorenzo took the lead from Rossi at the first corner, and to the despair of the home crowd the nine-time world champion bowed out midway through the 23-lap race with smoke billowing from his bike. Marquez, the 2013 and 2014 champion who remains second in this year’s standings, took the lead on the final lap, before Lorenzo seized the victory metres from the chequered flag in the closest finish of the season to date. The Spaniard admitted his third victory of the season was a surprise and added: “I used up a lot of energy to stay in the lead during the race and I thought that Marquez had more energy when he passed me, so I just wanted to stay in second place and take the points. “I tried a crazy move, and my bike was quite fast, so I could take the win off Marquez and I won this unexpected victory.” Andrea Iannone of Italy finished a distant third but set a new MotoGP top speed record of 354.9kmh (220.5mph). In Moto2 Britain’s Sam Lowes leads by two points after finishing third behind Johann Zarco of France and Italian Lorenzo Baldassarri. South African Brad Binder consolidated his Moto3 lead by recording a third successive win. Bbc.com

Ten-man Barcelona completed the Spanish league and cup double as two goals in extra time clinched the Copa del Rey. Luis Enrique’s side claimed the trophy for the 28th time despite having Javier Mascherano sent off in the first half. Jordi Alba and Neymar scored for Barcelona, who can boast back-to-back doubles after winning La Liga. Sevilla had Ever Banega dismissed in stoppage time at the end of 90 minutes and Daniel Carrico at the end of extra time as they finished with nine men. Mascherano was given a straight red card in the 36th minute for dragging down Kevin Gameiro by his shirt as the Frenchman raced towards goal. Five minutes into the second half, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique produced a vital deflection to divert a long-range effort from Banega onto the post and, after an end-to-end second half, Banega was sent off in stoppage time for chopping down Neymar on the edge of the area. Barcelona broke the deadlock seven minutes into extra time when Alba sprinted to meet Lionel Messi’s fine crossfield pass and finished first time across goalkeeper Sergio Rico and into the bottom corner. Carrico was dismissed in stoppage time at the end of extra time when he received a yellow card for a foul on Messi and another for his angry protest. Messi then fed Neymar for the Brazilian to add a second with a confident finish. No backward step for Barcelona Barcelona refused to take a negative approach and, even when Mascherano was dismissed, coach Luis Enrique kept his side on the front foot by resisting the temptation to replace one of his forwards with a natural centre-back. Instead, he deployed Sergio Busquets as a makeshift centre-back until half-time, then sacrificed midfielder Ivan Rakitic to allow defender Jeremy Mathieu to partner Pique at centre-back, allowing the attacking trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar to stay on the field. That was until 12 minutes into the second half, when Suarez pulled a hamstring and was forced off, but Barcelona still held their own despite Sevilla taking the initiative with their extra man. Despite his reputation for being combative and short-tempered, it is the first time in his career Mascherano has been sent off twice in a single season. It was also Barcelona’s first sending off since October, when Mascherano was dismissed against Eibar, since when 13 opposition players have received red cards against Enrique’s side. Barcelona’s triumph ended a remarkable run in cup finals for their opponents. Sevilla have earned a reputation as Spain’s cup final experts, having not lost a final since 1962 apart from in one-off games in the Uefa Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup. Since losing to Real Madrid 54 years ago in the Copa del Rey final, Sevilla have won on their only other two appearances in the final, beating Getafe in 2007 and Atletico Madrid in 2010. And in Europe they have triumphed in all five finals they have contested in the Uefa Cup and Europa League. They have won the Europa League for the last three seasons - including last week’s victory over Liverpool in Basel - to establish coach Unai Emery as one of the most successful in Europe on big occasions. That success has brought him to the attention of other clubs, with Everton the latest to be linked with the 44-year-old after sacking his fellow Spaniard Roberto Martinez. Bbc.com
