Mojácar bans 'unseemly' stag and hen party behaviour
will be subject to fines, too, although the stag and hen party behaviour is what has most upset the council.“We don't want that kind of obscene conduct in Mojácar,” PP mayoress Rosa María Cano says.
A POPULAR tourism hotspot in the province of Almería has banned 'vulgar' stag and hen parties, saying it is 'fed up' with seeing revellers lowering the tone – especially in the daytime when children may be around. Mojácar town council plans to fine anyone seen wearing 'phallic tiaras' or indulging in 'unseemly behaviour with blow-up dolls', or anything similar to these actions which are frequently witnessed by local residents and other, more peaceful holidaymakers. Whilst the local government does not want to ban hen and stag parties altogether, realising it would be financial suicide as Mojácar relies so heavily on tourism, it wants to clamp down on those visitors who do not know how to behave in a civil fashion in public. Walking around in swimming trunks or bikinis – except on the beach or the immediate seafront – or men going topless other than on the beach
Such revelry often starts as early as midday and goes on until the early hours, meaning the likelihood of families seeing groups with plastic penis accessories is high. In general and even at night, fines for offenders will range from €100 to €300, but if partygoers are seen acting in this manner in the daytime, near large crowds or where children are around, or near listed buildings and tourist attractions, they could be hit in their pockets by as much as €1,000 each. Opposition members slammed the new rules, saying they were guaranteed to 'destroy tourism'.

A visitor fined for walking the streets in swimming trunks or a bikini would 'find it so absurd' that he or she would tell everyone about it.

“The story would get around quickly, and tourists planning a visit to Mojácar would choose another destination,” complains socialist (PSOE) leader Manuel Zamora.

Her body was found by a security guard, who was alerted by her partner and his dad. Paramedics could do nothing to save her when they arrived. The arrest took place after the three British adults were interviewed and Guardia Civil
investigators looked through CCTV footage. Sources close to the case say they believe the possibility that the woman took her own life is “minimal”. The dead woman, who has not been named, is believed to have jetted to the island last month with her partner and child. A spokesman for an emergency response centre said: “We were called around 2.20am on Friday to reports a woman had plunged from the 12th floor of an apartment block. “A 25-year-old British lady was confirmed dead at the scene.” www.dailyrecord.co.uk
Rare orangutan birth celebrated at Madrid Zoo
Zoo keeps are visitors are celebrating after a new baby orangutan was born in Madrid's zoo. The cute baby orangutan was born on May 29th in Madrid’s Zoo-Aquarium, much to the delight of zoo keepers, visitors and animal lovers around the world, who watched the birth live on video app, Periscope. "The baby was born to orangutans Surya and Dahi after an eight and a half month pregnancy in a natural birth that surprised vets with its speed," Madrid Zoo said in a statement. The baby weighed 1.5kg and mother and baby are both doing well the zoo confirmed. The new baby joins the zoo’s group of Bornean orangutans, which includes its mother and father, Surya and Dahi, as well as the group’s other female orangutan, Kedua, the new arrival’s big
brother, Sungay and his playmate, Boo. The new arrival and its mother are currently living apart from the other orangutans while they bond, as is normal with the species. The zoo will soon open polls on its Facebook page for the public to vote to name the new arrival. The only stipulation is that its name should begin with a letter ‘s’ like that of its mother, Surya. thelocal

Spain’s Supreme Court backs renewable energy cuts
Decision finds that €1.7 billion drop in subsidies was legal, but government still faces dozens of claims in arbitration agencies The Spanish Supreme Court has dealt a new blow to renewable energy producers. In a ruling, the court backed the 2014 government decree that resulted in cuts of nearly €1.7 billion in subsidies for the sector. The decision is a setback for the three producers who fought the legal battle against the Spanish government The court finds that the decree, passed by Mariano Rajoy of the
Popular Party (PP), does not violate the Spanish Constitution or EU legislation, as the plaintiffs claimed. The decision, which confirms an earlier ruling by the Constitutional Court, is a setback for the three producers who fought the legal battle against the Spanish government: Ingeniería Civil, Alternativa y Medioambiental (Incam), Renovables Samca and Llerena Solar, Temcli y Powersol 2007. But hundreds more similar appeals have reached the Supreme
Necessary cuts?
E.P. The legislative changes to conditions for investment in renewable energies were rushed through parliament by royal decree, as Spain sought to contain its ballooning deficit in the middle of the economic crisis. Calculations indicate that Spain was paying excessive premiums and subsidies to thermosolar and photovoltaic producers, and that such premiums, in excess of market rates, were one of the causes of the unrelenting rise in the tariff deficit – the difference between the cost of producing electricity and what Spanish consumers are actually charged for it. Spain has the fourth-highest electricity costs in Europe – around €80 per person a month.

Court, which is expected to rule along the same lines in the coming months. The one piece of good news for producers is that the new premiums are not retroactive, so that past subsidies do not have to be returned. Waiting for ICSID Despite the favourable rulings for the Spanish government, the legal battle over the cuts to renewable subsidies is not over. Dozens of companies and
investment funds have turned to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), a World Bank-sponsored arbitration agency, with claims against Spain. Those decisions are still pending. But in January, another claim at the Arbitration Court of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ended in Spain’s favour. elpais

There is no doubt that this is Mojácar´s biggest fiesta, anticipated keenly all year long. the Christian King at the end of the 15th century. There were no winners or losers, and the essence of this peaceful co-existence and mutual respect between cultures and religions, between Moor, Catholic and Jew, still remains alive today in the hearts of the people of Mojácar. For this reason, they enthusiastically prepare all year long for their chance to join in the one long proccession, combining the public with actors, musicians, horsemen, dancers, captains and retinues, and many more ingredients besides, to offer a beguiling spectacle of light, colour, noise and merriment for the crowds-like a story from the Thousand and One Nights.

As reported by the Commandery of Almería in a note, the incident occurred on January 15, when two people circulating in your car through the streets of Las Norias de Daza, at which time a second vehicle was filed against him and prevented them from continuing the March. The victims were forced to stop and the second car came up four people, one of whom was carrying a handgun in his hands. After physically assaulting the two occupants of the first passenger car, est 1984 the assailants seized of the automobile as well www.cms-properties.com as mobile phones of the victims, tools and cash. The agents focused their research on a habitual offender in the area in late February locating the stolen vehicle, which was hidden in greenhouses in the neighborhood of Santa María del Águila in El Ejido. Subsequently, the Civil Guard established a device to give to J.B.M., whose members carried out a search of the home of this in late April, which was seized the weapon allegedly used during the heist. The gun had scraped serial number and modified for real fire cannon. Finally, the officers arrested J.B.M. She suspected of a crime of robbery with violence and intimidation as well as for the crime of illegal possession of arms, but not before he tried unsuccessfully to flee without success. http://almeria360.com translated by google

founded in 1505, La Asunción de la Virgen built in 1748 and the Chapel of Jesús Nazareno founded in 1749 which houses a beautiful statue of Jesús of Nazareno.
Hueval Overa is a market town that sits along the side of the Almanzora River in the province of Almeria, in Andalusia. The town is a merge of two medieval settlements – Huercal and Overa. The town and surrounding area has a thriving agriculture industry, mainly for the lead mining in the region. The town has a population of just under 14,000 inhabitants.
Natural area Much of the surrounding countryside is desert-like; many visitors remark that the area is more like Arizona or Australia, than the Mediterranean coast. However, a few years ago a pine plantation was planted close to Huercal Overa - the first in the area for some 500 years. The forest is part of a long-term project to transform much of the area into lush greenery. The trees include almonds, oak and eucalyptus, as

During Easter Week a procession heads through the town of Huercal Overa, which celebrates the Passion of Christ. Statues are carried on floats by figures in white, brown or black robes; a religious spectacle which has been designated a National Tourist Attraction.
Market day is Monday and much of the town is taken over by the market on Monday morning. Huercal Overa benefits from good facilities with hotels, restaurants, hospital and municipal swimming pool and leisure centre.

Do you get confused when people offer you a plan or a policy? A plan is a fixed amount and 1 payment or staged payments covering the FUNERAL ONLY, if the plan isn’t paid in full at the time of death then the balance needs to be paid in full. A Policy is an Insurance where you pay a monthly amount calculated on your age until the time when you need to put it into effect, there is no end payment and no shortfall, you are covered from day 1. A policy also has additional bonuses, e.g. travel insurance, dental check and more. Give me a call and I’ll explain the differences and what options you have, not everyone needs a prepaid plan. It costs nothing for a quotation and all I need is your date of birth, take the worry away from your relatives, call now!!

There is no Channel 5 SD on the Freesat system anymore. If you use a Sky it will not effect, and a Free-To-Air receiver will have to be manually retuned. The Freesat default transponder

The other day I came across the following passage in the Bible: “Gossip is spread by wicked people who stir up trouble and break up friendships” and couldn’t but reflect on how true that is even today, 3000 years or more since it was first written. How often our children have been hurt by stories spread by jealous ‘friends’, and how many friendships have been destroyed as a result. But we adults aren’t immune to the hurt gossip can cause. We have, I’m sure, all of us come across folk who delight in gossip, and witnessed the immense damage they wreak on others. It’s so easy to spread a rumour which may contain little, if any truth, and so hard to ignore the mischievous report, allegedly passed on in friendship, of another’s negative comments or actions. How quickly even the best relationships can be undermined or destroyed as a result of listening to and believing such stories. For gossip is, as the Bible asserts, only and always spread by wicked people, whose intent is to cause trouble. So how can we counteract this scourge in our society? Well again I’d suggest the Bible has the answer, as St Paul, in his letter to Christians living in Philippi wrote: “In conclusion then,
(11,425 H 27500) has been moved to the UK beam of Astra 2 E and has a much weaker signal meaning some people have struggled to tune in there new Freesat boxes again this is only a problem in this area at this time of year A number of set-top boxes and smart TVs will not be able to use iPlayer from September this year, as the BBC has decided to end support for an early (MHEG) version of its player. V2 has low bit rates compared to newer iPlayer versions, resulting in blocky picture quality in scenes with rapid movement. Affected will be Freesat devices without the Freetime label,
fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honourable.” ‘If only’, St Paul suggests, ‘we were to concentrate on these positive ideals, then gossip and its consequent hurt would be a thing of the past’. We’d see the child (or adult) reporting that “so-and-so hates you” as, perhaps through jealousy, the trouble-maker they are, and try to help them attain a more positive outlook rather than allow ourselves to be infected by their attitude. So let’s beat the gossips of this World and, discounting all unsubstantiated rumour, concentrate our minds on things that are good, true, noble, right, pure, lovely, honourable and praiseworthy and I’m sure we’ll all, as a result, feel a lot better. Sony 2010 (KDL-EX range) TVs and some older Freeview devices. If the iPlayer home screen on your device looks like the image above, your device will stop working. Unfortunately for UK expats, the very popular Foxsat Humax HD and HDR (right) are included. These Freesat devices were sold extensively in mainland Europe owing to their highly sensitive tuners. A few people have managed to get them working out of the UK with the aid of a VPN router, which prevents geo-blocking. The Foxsat will continue to work as a satellite receiver, but as far as iPlayer is concerned, it will be bricked.

Brexit campaign resonates with Catalan separatists While regional president Carles Puigdemont is pro-European, he knows that the
turmoil caused by Brexit would boost his independence campaign. There is something familiar about Britain’s Brexit campaign, to Catalan separatists such as new regional president, Carles Puigdemont. At play are many of the sentiments that drive this wealthy Spanish region’s independence movement: sovereignty, identity, a sense that scroungers elsewhere are spending your money and dislike of a far-off, unfamiliar metropolis. Replace the word “Brussels” with “Madrid” and some of the literature could be recycled. Puigdemont, like the vast majority of Spaniards, is a fervent pro-European. But he sympathises with those who seek to bolster their sovereignty by demanding a referendum. And he knows that the turmoil caused by Brexit would also boost his independence campaign by obliging the EU to accept a major reconfiguration of member states. That explains why, uniquely among Spanish politicians, he is critical of the remain campaign. “We have also suffered campaigns of fear,” says Puigdemont, a 53-year-old former mayor of Girona who was catapulted into the Catalan presidency five months ago. “I remember when the banks started issuing their opinions. They treated us as if we were not grown-ups and said a whole lot of lies.” Those who predict that Brexit will destroy the European Union are wrong, he insists. “The EU will make an extraordinary display of political realism, and an admirable, Darwinian ability to adapt,” he says, implying that it would also adapt to Catalan independence. “It will be very interesting.” Catalan independence is as unpopular among European Union leaders as Brexit. Yet at the last regional elections in September, a majority of the deputies sent to the Catalan parliament were separatists. Puigdemont now leads a government which he
Basque Country Moves Closer to Independence Referendum
Spain’s autonomous Basque Country made a step closer to an independence referendum on Sunday after tens of thousands backed secession in a regional poll, organizers said. The vote was initiated by Gure Esku Dago (It’s in our hands) group, the organizers told RIA Novosti. Around 37,000 voted in the poll that was conducted in 34 municipalities. The region’s total population is over 2 million. The group’s leaders, Angel Oiarbide and Zelai Nikolás, praised the vote as “historic,” saying it was “the first step to a referendum.” “We are on the way toward a referendum. And we will continue working in this direction. Today is a historic day,” the organization said in a statement. The Basque Country has followed in the footsteps of Catalonia, a well-off Spanish region which has held dozens of local votes on whether it should leave Spain in the past years. Madrid has called all of them unconstitutional. http://sputniknews.com/

claims is already 70% of the way along the path to independence. That may be wishful thinking. Just as Europe considers Brexit a nightmare, so Spain sees Catalan independence as a calamity. Acting prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, of the conservative People’s party, is determined to stop that happening and has blocked a referendum. This means, for the moment, that Puigdemont is driving Catalonia towards a nasty showdown with Madrid. Puigdemont believes that the rising tide of separatism will win the day. “In 2012 there were just 14 deputies elected on a separatist ticket in the Catalan parliament,” he pointed out in an interview during a break between debating and voting at the 135-seat parliament in Barcelona. “Now we are a majority.” Puigdemont’s government has embarked on a plan that aims to break with Spain – but, somehow, remain in the European Union – within just a few years. He does not believe warnings that Catalonia would be instantly expelled from the EU and refused to say whether he would choose independence over Europe. Like most Catalans, he finds that an impossible choice. His task is to guide the regional parliament, governed by an unstable coalition that includes his own Convergence party and a small group of radical anti-capitalists, for an 18-month “pre-independence” period while it passes so-called “disconnection” laws to prepare for life outside Spain. Fresh regional elections would then be called next year to choose a government charged with drawing up a constitution for an independent Catalonia. If that was approved at a local referendum, then Catalonia would deem itself independent – regardless of what the rest of Spain has to say. And Puigdemont might end up in jail. Spain’s constitution gives Catalonia no right to self-proclaimed independence. The constitutional court’s powers were recently beefed up so that it could act against separatists. Friends and colleagues insist that Puigdemont – who still lives in Girona with his two daughters and Romanian wife – would go to jail if necessary. He refused to confirm that to the Guardian, saying only that he had pledged – using a Catalan and Spanish expression for working hard or doing whatever it takes – to “give up his skin” for the cause. “This is a deeply serious business, and profoundly democratic,” he says. “I could not disobey the will of the Catalan parliament.” Puigdemont’s absolute belief in independence makes him one of the more hardcore members of a mostly conservative Convergence party which only embraced the separatist cause four years ago. Unlike former president Artur Mas, he has always been a separatist. That helps explain why, when the anti- capitalists vetoed Mas, Puigdemont was suddenly elevated from mayor to president in January. He claims that independence can happen without breaking the law, though this is largely because he has already decided that Spain’s constitutional court must be ignored. The combined will of Catalan voters and the parliament weighs more heavily on him, he claims, than the “whims of a disacredited court”. “What is more important?,” he asks. “What the members of a politicised tribunal say, or what the citizens vote for? For me it is clear.” There are timid signs that, after half a dozen years of effervescence and with the anti-austerity Podemos party offering Catalan voters a different kind of hope, the separatist balloon may start to deflate. The one thing certain to change that would be for Puigdemont to be sent to jail. Indignant Catalans would never forget. theguardian.com
EU referendum: Brexit campaign accused of ‘fanning flames of division’ with controversial map
'Coded nudges and winks like this are utterly horrific and they should stop fanning the flames of division. Vote Leave is just playing the politics of division. It has no place in British society' The official Brexit campaign group has been accused of “fanning the flames of division” after publishing a map highlighting how the EU will a share a border with Syria if Turkey gains membership. In their referendum campaign material, set to be sent to millions of people across the UK , Vote Leave claim that five countries – Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey – are "set to join the EU”. Only three territories are actually named on the map: the UK, Syria and Iraq. David Cameron has previously criticised the Vote Leave campaign for claiming that Turkey is set to join the 28 member-state bloc. Speaking in May the Prime Minister said the country would not be ready to join the bloc “until the year 3000” on its current rate of progress. “This is just the visual interpretation of a dog whistle,” Tim Farron, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, told The Independent. He added: “Coded nudges and winks like this are utterly horrific and they should stop fanning the flames of division. Vote Leave is just playing the politics of division. It has no place in British society.” The leaflet, first published by the Spectator, highlights “the facts” of the EU, adding: “The EU is expanding to include: Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey. When we joined, there were just nine member states. Now there are 28, the most recent being
Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia. Five more countries are in the queue to join, including Turkey, totalling 89 million people. When they join, they will have the same rights as other member states”. It also carries the widely disputed claim that the EU “costs us £350 million a week”, which is “enough to build a new NHS hospital every week.” Despite warnings from the UK Statistics Authority, who criticised the figure as inaccurate, both Michael Gove and Boris Johnson have continued to publicise the figure relentlessly. “We get less than half of this back, and have no say over its spent,” the leaflet adds. It comes as the pound fell sharply against the dollar on Monday as financial markets reacted badly to new polls suggesting momentum is moving towards Britain’s exit from the European Union. On Sunday Nigel Farage was criticised by a fellow Brexit campaigner of “outrageous blatant
scaremongering” after suggesting women could be at risk of sex attacks from migrants if Britons vote to stay in the EU. Referring to reports from the New Years Eve attacks in Cologne in Germany that hundreds of women were sexually assaulted, the Ukip leader said the possibility of such attacks in the UK will be "the nuclear bomb" of the referendum campaign. independent.co.uk

Building Licences for New Homes Climbed by 57% in Q1 In the first three months of this year the number of licences authorised for the construction of new homes in Spain reached a total of 16,782, which represents an increase of 57.1% compared to the same period of 2015, when only 10,682 permits were granted. According to data from the Ministry of Public Works, this is the best figure recorded since the first quarter of 2011, when the number of building permits reached a total of 21,953. Of the total number of building permits requested between January and March, some 74% related to the construction of new apartments in blocks, with a total of 12,425 units and an increase of 64.7% over the same period of last year, while there were 4,356 permit applications for single family homes, which is 39.2% more than the previous year. Thus, the latest data shows that the first quarter of the year confirms the path of recovery in housing construction, following the 42.5% increase in building permits in 2015, which came after 2014 broke a run of seven consecutive years of negative results by registering growth of 1.7%, to reach a total of 34,873 permits issued. This real estate market indicator recorded an all time low in 2013 for the total number of building licences authorised (34,288 units in the year), and since the peak level reached in 2006, when a total of 865,561 permits were issued (126,753 in the month of September alone), this represents a
calida homes
decline of 96%. El País reported that the areas where there are a growing number of building licence applications are the regions which have lower stocks of unsold housing. In Madrid, developers applied for 4,962 licences, which is 56% more than in the first quarter of 2015, while in Catalonia, there were 2,192 licences issued (+49.4%), in Andalucía there were 2,198 (+35.4%), and in Valencia the number of building permits increased by 21%, to a total of 1,590 authorisations. The data also shows that the size of these new homes has grown, with the average size of a family home standing at around 203.6 square metres, while the average apartment size stood at 118 square metres (114 metres in the same quarter of 2015). The Ministry pointed out that licences for the reform and restoration of homes in Spain, which up until 2015 had accumulated four consecutive years of declines, registered a total of 5,976 licence authorisations up until March, representing an increase of 0.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, when 5,943 permits were issued. However, the number of licences for home extensions declined by 2.7% yearon-year, to just 348 permits issued. kyero.com

The US Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from Google over a class action lawsuit from advertisers who accused the internet company of displaying their adverts on “low quality” web sites. The judges decided that the lawsuit, which represents hundreds of thousands of advertisers using Google’s Adwords program, could continue. Google had tried to argue that a federal appeals court in San Francisco should not have approved the class action because damages should be calculated individually for each advertiser. The appeals court responded that Google should use a formula to calculate damages based on the average advertiser’s experience. The court’s decision leaves in place a September ruling which allowed Californian advertisers, who used the Adwords program between 2004 and 2008, to press ahead with the lawsuit. Google is part of Alphabet Inc and generated $67 billion in revenue last year, according to
the Associated Press. Google has been battling multiple lawsuits across the US recently. Last month the tech giant was cleared in court and escaped $9 billion worth of damages over claims from Oracle that it violated copywright laws by using a section of its Java code. In a separate case, a federal judge in Florida ruled that a SEO-marketing company which accused Google of improperly censoring its search results for “economic reasons” has been allowed to go forward with its lawsuit. It was a rare instance in which Google’s “First Amendment” argument - protecting the company’s opinions as to what should be included in search results - was dismissed. Associated Press

viewpoint
Residencia who attended an emergency within seven
Alqueria has decided to open its doors to immigration. The rationale behind this brainwave is as follows. The Alquerian people are dysfunctional with the result that the two barrios which make up the Pueblo are in a constant state of open warfare. Each blames the other for any misfortune, an unexpected rainfall can bring on the energetic oiling of rifles. If foreign blood is brought into Alqueria it would dilute the original population with a proportional dilution of hostility. What could go wrong? Of course the right sort of people would be needed, so some sort of vetting procedure would be required. The immigration requirements of various countries were studied but as Alqueria is a singular country to say the least none of the procedures examined fitted the singular bill. It was therefore decided to put prospective candidates through a series of tests to establish their suitability for ‘residencia’. One would think that the ability to walk and talk simultaneously would be qualification enough for residence in Alqueria. If one could also adequately ride a bike it would suggest an intellect of gigantic proportion when compared to the mental capability of the present incumbent Alquerian population. The Alquerian Government however wanted the ‘creme de la creme’ of immigrants and ‘set the bar high’. Test number one: The prospective candidate had to demonstrate that they called a local plumber
hours. Some candidates naively simply phoned, another offered wine and tapas and one enterprising individual offered his wife. None were unsuccessful. One plumber, the one offered wine and tapas did turn up but after consuming the repast suddenly remembered he had left his tool bag at home and was never seen again. Test number two: To order a meal at the Restaurante Grasiento Gabino. It isn’t the restaurant that is the problem but the waiter Roberto. He talks and talks describing the menu in minute detail, it’s what he was born to do. A family of three tried, Mother went into a coma through hunger, husband went into a catatonic trance through boredom and the child missed his fifth birthday. Roberto spends so long in his descriptive oratory that no food has been served for three years, the kitchen is closed and deserted. Test number three: To successfully notify the British Pension Office of a change of address. No one even attempted this task. The bar was indeed too high and no candidates emerged successful. It was then decided to issue residence to those who managed to spell their name correctly on the application form. Two were accepted, two rather strange individuals, more of them later.
Enchanting Spain - out now
From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. Stolen Goods
When I returned home from Urgencias with my newly mended arm in its pristine plaster cast of blinding white I knew that sooner or later I would suffer Plaster Itch. The universally accepted alleviative for this irritating condition is a knitting needle, so in order to be prepared when the inevitable manifested itself I searched the house in vain for such, or for anything that might pass as such. The nearest I could find was a barbecue skewer. However, this is such a long, sharp and generally lethal weapon to use on one delicate arm encased in one small plaster that it was like going sparrow shooting with a Kalashnikov. But I could find nothing better – our house is a knitting needle-free zone. Shortly afterwards we were again patronising the services of the Hospital Inmaculada, but for another reason entirely. Business completed, we headed for the Restaurante for a strengthening bite of something, which in my case was a Pincho. I chose a Pincho because it is possible to eat it one-handed without too much loss of dignity – you don’t have to get someone to cut it up for you, neither do you have to chase it around the plate before finally capturing it and transferring it to mouth in a sort of gulp that would offend any well-bred pig. As I delicately picked the meat from the skewer I couldn’t help but notice that the skewer was the exact length

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk and thickness of a knitting needle – it would be perfect for Plaster Itch. Picked clean it lay on my plate, smooth and gleaming, nicely rounded at one end and stabproof blunted at the other. Fate, I reasoned, had put it in my path – Fate had seen my need, and was coming to my rescue; it would be ungrateful of me to ignore her intervention. Silently I thanked her, picked it up, wiped it clean and stuffed it in my handbag - I stole the Hospital’s skewer! Today I was back in the Restaurante after the removal of my plaster. I wondered briefly if I should return my contraband – was The Case of the Stolen Skewer was still open? Or would the re-appearance of the skewer simply draw attention to me as a suspect? Would I be able to escape prosecution on the grounds of Diminished Responsibility? No, I think I’ll keep quiet – I think I may have got away with it!

roquetas de mar community news IU encourages Roqueteros For all your local advertising needs to bring claims against the rising water and sewer bill
ROQUETAS DE Mar IU de Roquetas de Mar informs the neighbors that today, June 1, 2016, the Official Gazette of the Province of Almeria published the modification of the tax regulation on the rate of water supply drinking and sanitation Roquetas de Mar, approved in the last full city Council on 13 May. This change approved only with the votes of PP and Citizens, representing an increase of value of receipt by more than 53% from the end of this year and an automatic rise, if finally approved, more than 30%: "Something totally unaffordable right now for most homes Roquetas severely punished by unemployment and falling wage income," complains Juan Pablo Yakubiuk, councilman IU Roquetas. Also from IU Roquetas it is noted that allegation also be grounds for the processing of this rise since receipt amount has not followed the provisions of Decree 365/2009, of 3 November, by which regulates administrative procedures in matters authorized local level in Andalusia prices. This decree stipulates that "in terms of water supply, the Directorate General shall instruct the authorization procedures
of tariffs approved by local authorities that supply, as a whole, to a population of over 100,000 inhabitants or have more than 25,000 subscribers," something which it has not previously requested by the PP government team in the case of this Roquetas approval to exceed that number of subscribers. For this, the formation of the left is set as an objective that all citizens of Roquetas, groups, families, parties and other organizations make use of the right of allegations during the public information period ending on June 30 and is achieved knock down this rise on the water bill. "To do this from IU Roquetas we facilitate open models allegations and training on how to do both in the campaign that will take place with tables in different neighborhoods as in the web section w w w.i u r o q u e t a s .o r g / alegaciones" Yakubiuk explains. "The allegations are legal and technical, but nothing prevents the same, in addition, each neighbor, association or group express their discomfort and inability to cope with these new water service prices. Should achieve majority in the plenary to estimate the allegations may curb this rising water bill and thus

Book Review
The Wrong Girl by Laura Wilson
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“Everything was in a mess. She’s been left in this horrible room because she was the wrong girl. She wasn’t good enough to be Phoebe or have a mum like Melissa. Of course she wasn’t. How could she ever have thought she was?” We can all sympathise with being in the wrong place at the wrong time can’t we? But imagine having the wrong life and being the wrong person? Does that make any sense? Once you’ve worked through the complexities of this plot with these dysfunctional characters that all seem to have fragile egos appearing to be very unstable and grossly unhappy it should make sense. This is typical of Guardian crime reviewer, Laura Wilson and this one is certainly worthy of your time. Wilson reminds us throughout that whatever actions we have taken in the past, they will always come back to haunt us. Guilt unfortunately, may define us, so how do we choose the guilt we can live with and repress it as long as we struggle through day to day living? Can we ever escape the burdens and actions of the past? Probably not. The Prologue intrigues us with a Mr Fix-it, alias mystery man, sounding dejected and suicidal. “Everything had gone wrong too many times.” Our mystery man was a roadie in the past, forty years back. He refers to a missing child and inevitably, his inability to be able to bring back the child. Sounds ominous, doesn’t it? We are also told that there is a mystery surrounding his parentage and of course, his identity. It’s what he refers to as knowing and not knowing like honesty or lying, something that alcoholics do and he should know. Mystery man was on a mission to retrace the past, to visit a man from the 60s and find out answers but he was running out of time. He also wanted to protect Molly. Molly Armitage is Suzie’s daughter. Mother, daughter and Tom had been staying at the Old Rectory in Repshall with Dan Carthy Todd. Dan was 66 when he dies suddenly. Ten year old Molly discovered his waxwork like form and this gave her nightmares that he would come back to haunt her. Suzie phones Janice, Dan’s sister who also happens to be her birth mother that she has not had contact with in over 44 years. Janice was pregnant at 19 and was persuaded by her parents to have the child adopted. Two marriages, short-lived, ending in divorce, left her financially comfortable with properties in Notting Hill Gate and Suffolk which allowed her to travel extensively and enjoy an affluent lifestyle. Janice had grown apart from Dan. He had moved back to his parents’ home in Norfolk to look after them whilst the sister enjoyed a carefree, more hedonistic type of existence and after their deaths, he remained in modest surroundings as an odd-job man, helping where help was needed. The last time Janice had seen Dan was in 2008, for Ma’s funeral. Receiving the phone call from her one and only daughter proved too much. Throughout the novel Janice constantly reflects on abandoning her child and tries to explain to a fragile, unstable Suzie how she has always been haunted by this action. The wrong action. We are told that Janice always seems to be selfcentred and controlled. Through life’s tribulations she hasn’t shed a tear and as readers, we don’t feel sympathetic towards her. and two grand-children overwhelms her, especially when Dan has just died and she has to arrange a funeral. Suzie carries feelings of anger and hatred towards her: “If you’d really loved me, you wouldn’t have let me go. Then how could you do it?” A difficult one to answer. Understandably, having to confront her demons turns her into a blubbering wreck. We are taken back to the swinging 60s, with rock stars and gigs and days of tripping. For Janice it was meant to be a time of sexual liberation and freedom. “Everyone got stoned.” She had a fling with Jeff and then a more serious one with Joe: “Joe was a rock star, and they were expected to take drugs and be crazy.” She called herself his ex-girlfriend or groupie believing the relationship was real: it was “something real, something that formed part of who she was.” His sister Marie had been killed at a young age and this has had a profound effect on him. “Ribbons in the Wind” was probably dedicated to his sister. Drugs ruined his career and he was kicked out from the Weather Ship where he became a recluse, suffering a breakdown and having to seek psychiatric help. His existence was Spartan compared to his glamorous days as a rock and roll star, no heroism and nothing spectacular. Tributes were still being left outside his home, close to Dan’s. Always remembered. Molly bears a striking resemblance to a projected image of Phoebe Piper, a girl who has been missing for seven years. She discovers a letter left by Dan to Joe with two photos, in his garden shed and is convinced that she is Phoebe and not Molly. She keeps a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings relating to Phoebe’s disappearance and becomes mortified when she reads that the Pipers are divorcing. “Not being able to catch up with the life you were supposed to have was a lot worse than coming last in the sack race, because if you couldn’t do that, then you’d never be able to belong anywhere.” A reference to Joe and a ribbon seemed crucial for Molly’s adopting her new life as the right girl otherwise “she’d be the wrong girl for the rest of her life and she’d never ever be happy.” She was suspicious when Janice arrived in Norfolk and would not accept her as a grandmother. Within a short space of time, Molly goes missing, leaving Suzie bereft and Janice feeling useless, at odds with the daughter she needs forgiveness from. What are they going to do? We are told about the Sneaky Man also known as the Catweazle, obsessed with Joe who lives in the woods. Mark, Suzie’s boyfriend discovers a corpse which he assumes belongs to this man. We soon discover the darker side of the swinging 60s, Magic Malc, Malcolm Devlin, who used to supply magical substances to the 60s rock scene, completely mad and dangerous. In time, Janice learns to connect the 1967 picnic scene when she was tripping with the rock band with a disappearance of another girl, Lisa Wynn. Some grisly discoveries shake Janice’s awareness of those carefree days: “freedom was an illusion, and all of it meaningless.” The story contains so many twists and turns to engage your interest throughout. Enjoy. Publisher: Quercus Publishing Ltd. ISBN: 978-1-78206-312-4.

Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza beat World No. 1 Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 to win her first Grand Slam title at the French Open on Saturday. The 22-year-old Muguruza is the first Spanish woman to win Roland Garros since Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario in 1998. Fourth seed Muguruza's straight sets win made amends for her loss against Williams in last year's Wimbledon final. Although it was Muguruza who got the first break of serve, it was Williams who looked to have gained the upper hand with three games in a row giving her a 5-4 lead.

López and López become the first allS p a n i s h pairing to win the men’s doubles trophy at RolandGarros since Serge Casals and Emilio Sanchez in 1990. The Spaniards did not drop serve until the seventh game of the decider - the second of three breaks in a row which set Feliciano López up to serve for the title. He duly capped the stunning day for Spain with an ace. Both players fell to the ground when they realised their feat. Tears streamed down the cheeks of Marc Lopez, who had twice suffered the disappointment of being runner-up in Grand Slam finals in 2014, with Marcel Granollers here and at the US Open. thinkspain
This week’s team game at Marina Phoenix was a fourball team playing two better ball pairs with the scores combined. The result was a tie on 88 points, with the winners, on countback, being Liam MacNamee, José Urroz, Jim Budd and Nadie Wass. Second were Les Armfield, Phil Tottie, Tony King and Margaret Budd; followed, in third, by John Lally, Don Atkins, Miriam Staunton and Ann Kavanagh (84). There were nearest the pin prizes for Ken Dore (5th) and Jim Laird (17th). The individual competition this week was an away day to Lorca Golf Resort (due to hollow tining at Marina). The highlight of the day was at the par 3 fourth hole where there was no putter required for John Kavanagh as he slotted a hole in one and gladly picked up the resultant hefty bar bill. The winners, on the day, was Jim Budd, on countback, from José Urroz in second. Both had 35 points ahead of Les Armfield (34) in third. Marina Phoenix play Mondays (individual) and Thursdays (team game). To join us for a €25 greenfee. Ring Jim on 950 162 727 / 600 353 670 or Rosalie 950 397 117/ 697 512 882.

Last Friday (3 June), world superstar Muhammad Ali passed away, aged 74, in Phoenix, Arizona. He had been suffering with Parkinson’s for over 30 years. Born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville, Kentucky in January 1942, he won six USA ‘Golden Glove’ titles and an Olympic gold medal in Rome in 1960 before turning professional. He then went on to have 61 heavyweight fights, winning 56 of them, 37 by a knock-out. Nicknamed by himself as the ‘Greatest’, he was world champion three times in 1964, 1974 and 1978, and was involved in two of the most-talked about contests ever – against George Foreman (The Rumble in the Jungle) in 1974 and against Joe Frazier (The Thriller in Manilla) a year later. And, of course, he was also knocked down by Henry Cooper in London, but still got up and won! He refused to do his National Service and was sentenced to four years in prison but he appealed, won his case and never went behind bars. A black civil rights activist, he changed his name from Clay to Ali in 1964 (after beating Sonny Liston to become world champion for the first time) and thereafter became a sporting hero. Whether you like boxing or not, everyone seemed to know Muhammad Ali - or the ‘Louisville Lip’, another nickname his was given. In fact, someone said, if he parachuted down from the sky and landed anywhere in the world, people would know who he was! I had the pleasure of being in his company in August 1983 when he opened a youth community centre in Hockley,
Birmingham… and even then 4,000 people turned up just to get a glimpse of their hero! All too frequently, the word legend is used when talking about a star performer (in all walks of life)… but on this occasion, Muhammad Ali was certainly a true legend. Married twice, he leaves a wife, seven daughters and two sons. This is what he always told people of the world and wanted each and everyone to know.... "I would like to be remembered as a man who won the world heavyweight title three times, who was humorous and who treated everyone right… As a man who never looked down on those who looked up to him and who helped as many people as he could… As a man who stood up for his beliefs no matter what… As a man who tried to unite all humankind through faith and love… And if that's too much, then I guess I'd settle for being remembered only as a great boxer who became a leader and a champion of his people. And I wouldn't even mind if folk forgot how pretty I was! L i k e M a r t i n Luther King, his spirit will live on… and on… and on. R.I.P.

Smith won the WBO title against John Thompson in October Liam Smith set his sights on Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez after defending his WBO light-middleweight title with a second-round knockout of Predrag Radosevic in Liverpool. The Liverpool fighter felled Radosevic with a left hook to the body and the Montenegrin failed to beat the count. It was the 13th knockout victory of his career and extends his unbeaten record to 23 wins and one draw. “I’d be a liar if I said Canelo doesn’t get my stomach going,” Smith, 27, said. Smith is a possible opponent for Alvarez’s next fight, expected to be in Las Vegas in September. “Every time anyone mentions Canelo and Vegas to me, it gives me
goose bumps,” Smith added.
WBC middleweight champion Alvarez is regarded as one of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters, and defended his title against Britain’s Amir Khan last month.
