Brit expats in Spain stunned and fearful after Brexit win

The UK voted to leave the EU in a referendum yesterday, immediately sending the value of sterling plummeting and leaving British expats in Spain stunned and concerned about their future. Britain has voted to leave the EU, by an expected margin of 52 percent to 48 percent, sending shockwaves around Europe. After it initially appeared that the “Remain” campaign was on course for victory, the results that drifted in throughout the early hours of Friday morning, proved that many opinion polls, the bookmakers and political experts had got it wrong. The result send the value of the pound crashing, recording it’s biggest drop in over 30 years. Financial forecasters believe

it will tumble even further throughout the day. While the result will have major bearing on the future of Europe and on the futures of Britain’s political parties, it will also have a major impact on the lives of many Brits living throughout the EU. The fall in the value of the pound will have severely hit the value of pensions - often the only form of income for British expats and may make it unaffordable for many to stay abroad. “I just can’t believe it, what will happen to the UK now and to our rights as Brits living and working abroad?” said Mary Reid, a primary school teacher from the Midlands living in Madrid. “One of the first things I am going to do is consult a lawyer and see where I stand on getting Spanish nationality,” said the mother-of-one. Carrie Frais, the Barcelonabased founder of MumAbroad Spain voiced the fears of many expat mothers who had chosen to bring up their children in Spain. “I am truly shocked by the outcome of the referendum. Speaking on behalf of many British mothers who have chosen Spain as their adoptive country we know how important the UK is to the livelihoods and jobs of those working in the tourism and property sector, not to mention all the other thousands of industries which have gained from British investment here,” she said. “The weakening of the pound is bound to have a significant and immediate effect and no-one can be sure of other restrictions imposed on UK investment in Spain in the future, not to mention the future of British people living and working here. It is indeed worrying times,” she said. “I am shocked at the result. Too many brexit voters are living in the past. They should be looking to the future, thinking about our children,” Lisa Sadleir who runs a relocation business in Malaga told The Local. “We won’t be directly affected here as we have been legal residents for many years. However I think many expats, who have been living here, without the correct paperwork will be very nervous, and rightly so. “Our decision now is whether to swap our non EU British Pool Safety Fencing passports for Spanish ones,”

June 2016 she added. “I’m a little concerned about my future as resident here but US citizens and people from many other countries seem to get by so it’s probably just a fear of change,” said Simon Harris, who has lived in Catalonia for 28 years. “We have two years of negotiations before the consequences of Brexit really kick in and I’m confident that the rights of longterm residents will be borne in mind, if only because any kind of mistreatment would provoke a tit-for-tat response against Spanish citizens in the UK. “If the worst comes to worst, I might have to make an honest woman out of my long-standing partner or apply for Spanish citizenship, both of which are appealing options,” he said. “I am in total shock at the result. It’s a sad, sad day for Britain and only time will tell what the consequences of this will be,” Jane Spivey, who runs language academy Two Bird Languages, “I’m devastated by the news that my home country has voted for racism, isolation and has thrown away years of stability and peace,” said Natasha Mason of Lets Education Training. Across the south of Spain, expats were waking up to an uncertain future, with many retirees who live off a British pension realizing their spending power was instantly affected. “Expats living in Spain are now facing an uncertain future for sure,” said Maura Hillen, who in May 2015 was elected as a councillor in Albox. “I don’t think that anyone can predict what will happen next at this early stage but the most immediate impact will be volatility in the markets which will affect exchange rates and therefore the value of our spending power in Spain. “We will need to wait a little longer to find out what happens in terms of access to health care, our tax status etc and I assume that UK citizens will lose the right to vote in municipal elections in Spain which means that any influence we held in our local town halls will come to an end.” One of the biggest fears was the effect the Brexit win would have on British investment in Spain “The British Chamber of Commerce in Spain is very disappointed with the outcome of the referendum, given that our members indicated an almost unanimous commitment to remaining within the EU,” Christopher Dottie, the president of the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain told The Local. “The decision to leave poses risks to the very strong British investment in Spain which has been responsible for the creation of 240.000 jobs in recent years. We hope that these risks can be minimized by the British government and European Union giving clarity as early as possible to business regarding the future trading conditions that they will face.” The effect of the Brexit vote would be immediate, he warned, and create an uncertain future. “The strongest short-term effect on business will be related to currency fluctuations and stock market valuations. Regarding the medium and long term much will depend on the results of the years of negotiations that the United Kingdom faces and we currently have no information or precedents to indicate how they will develop.” “An uncertain future is never positive but international trade will continue, relations between Spain and the UK will continue and the path to future collaboration and prosperity will become clearer during the coming weeks and months,” Dottie added. thelocal.

PP win most seats and PSOE cling on to second place Spain's ruling conservatives won a Spain back to growth and overseen a

repeat general election on Sunday with 32.7 percent of the vote, ahead of the Socialists which came in second, with 90 percent of ballots counted. Spain's incumbent conservatives finished stronger in Sunday's repeat election, winning more seats than in December polls though still without a majority, partial official results showed. Exit polls had initially suggested that the far-left Unidos Podemos coalition had come second -- which would have been an unprecedented shift in Spain - but official results showed it was actually in third place after the Socialists The election came just three days after Britain’s shock vote to leave the European Union, pitting those hungry for change in a country with high unemployment against those who fear it would torpedo Spain’s slow economic recovery. Incumbent prime minister Mariano Rajoy has argued that since the PP came to power in 2011, it has brought

drop in unemployment - though at 21 percent it is still the second highest rate in the European Union after Greece. But his rivals retort that inequalities have risen, the jobs created are mainly unstable, and they point to the repeated corruption scandals to have hit the PP. Despite this, though, voters still went for the PP led by Rajoy, who has portrayed himself as a safe pair of hands. Polls closed in Spain at 8pm and initial exit polls suggested that the PP had secured the largest vote winning an estimated 117 to 121 seats. The exit polls showed Unidos Podemos has surpassed the PSOE to become the second largest party with 91 to 95 seats, the PSOE have 81 to 85 and Ciudadanos have 26 - 30 seats, according to poll conducted by Sigma Dos. tthelocal

Around thirty participants from the North Almería Clinical Mental Health Management Unit, made this friendly visit. Accompanied by Carmen Garcia Campoy, manager of the Mojácar Tourism department, they made a tour of the highlights of the municipality, receiving interesting facts and details about each point of interest along the way. problems associated with mental illness, is proud to be one of the first towns in the region involved in the integration, normalisation of people who need extra help. The North Almería Clinical Mental Health Management Unit, in their fight against the stigma of mental illness, conducts various activities to integrate those affected into normal life and, to raise awareness about the problems of these types of disorders. Spanish stock market sustains historical loss on Brexit news

of its entire 24-year history on Friday, when news of a Brexit victory pushed Spain’s benchmark stock market index down 12.35% at closing time. The Friday tumble breaks the prior record for daily losses, which was set in October 2008 following news of the Lehman Brothers debacle. On that day, the Ibex retreated 9.14%. Gibraltar votes to remain The vast majority of Gibraltarians voted to remain in the European Union. Remain won with 95.91% of the vote, and turnout was 83.53% among the 24,117 residents with a right to vote. The result had been widely expected. The territory’s economy benefits from EU membership while allowing for fiscal benefits. Local politicians had campaigned aggressively against a Brexit. Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is facing a general election this Sunday, came out to issue “a message of calm to the markets” shortly after David Cameron announced his plan to step down over the referendum results. Rajoy said that the Spanish financial system “has solid conditions” to face the market turbulence spreading across the world. He added that Spain “makes a note with sadness” of the referendum results. Meanwhile, Spain’s risk premium – the gap between Spanish and German 10-year borrowing costs – grew over 50 basis points to reach 190 points, its

June 2016

highest level since February 2014. Bank losses Spain’s major banks suffered serious setbacks on Friday morning, with Santander shedding 25% of its value and Bankia losing 26% Santander has a major presence in Britain. On Friday, the Santander UK website issued a note to its clients to reassure them that “nothing has changed for Santander UK. There are no changes to the way we serve you and we won’t make any changes to our products and services as a result of the referendum without notifying you first.” Mid-term effects Experts said that in the short and mid-term, this market turbulence will hurt the pound, thus reducing British citizens’ purchasing power. This in turn could have an impact on Spanish tourism, since Britain is the first exporter of tourists to Spain. Spain’s housing market could also suffer, with fewer UK citizens investing in holiday homes on the coast. As for Spaniards living in the UK – a community of around 200,000 people – they will likely need to apply for work permits in order to legally remain on British territory. Corporate interests Spanish corporate investment in Britain (€62.1 billion in 2014) is practically twice that of British investment in Spain (€36.6 billion). The 340 Spanish companies with a British presence reported profits of €6.3 billion and provided 75,217 jobs, while the 437 British companies operating in Spain reported profits of €928 million and employed 98,019 people, according to the Secretary of State for Trade. Spanish firms in Britain include Santander, Sabadell, Ferrovial, Telefónica and Iberdrola; some of the leading British companies in Spain are Vodafone, IAG, Altadis, BP and GlaxoSmithKline. elpais

partaloa spanish classes

June 22nd marked the end of leaning for this academic year for a group of residents from Partaloa and surrounding villages. Three groups beginners, intermediates and advanced have been studying Spanish in Partaloa. The courses attended by several different nationalities were kindly provided courtesy of the Ayutamiento de Partaloa and organised by Alcalde Antonio Peñuela Gonzalez and his staff. We would all like to thank him and his staff and in particular the course tutor Louisa Sevilla López. The course has brought different sections of the diverse community together, not only to learn the language but to appreciate the Spanish culture

and share our cultures.

Louisa has tailored the lessons to provide a hugely successful year despite grappling with a wide range of abilities and of course accents. My particular Scouse accent proving somewhat of a test for Louisa. We all look forward to the new term in October.

Voting day incidents: Polling station worker goes into labour; another fails to turn up due to being arrested in Gaza

of Extremadura, in the town of Plasencia (Cáceres province), one man on polling duty was ordered to change his clothing as he was wearing a Spanish football shirt in the Republican flag colours – a protest against the monarchy. Another man attending a polling table in Valdefuentes, also in the province of Cáceres, forced the voting process to stop when he passed out cold and had to be attended to by first-aiders.

FEW election days pass by without a handful of anecdotes, and one of the first came from a voting station in the Nazaret district of Valencia city where a woman on polling booth duty suddenly went into labour just as she was opening up for the first ballots of the day. She had to be rushed to Valencia's Hospital Clínico to give birth – and a substitute would have had to have been found at the last minute. At another polling station, the head of a ballot box table did not turn up, but his children did – to tell the others that their father had been arrested in in the Gaza strip. Also in Valencia, the head of a polling booth died two days before the elections and his stand-in had to be called in – but she is a student working on civil service exams, which is practically a full-time job, and refused as she 'needed to revise'. In the land-locked western region

Also in Extremadura, this time in the city of Badajoz, a polling station opened with fewer than the requisite table monitors, because two of them have not turned up – something they could be fined for.

UK Window, Doors, Conservatories,

Voting day has not been without tragedy, either – a 92-year-old man suffered a fatal heart attack just seconds after depositing his ballot paper at the Ortega y Gasset polling station on Madrid's C/ Ourenses, and in Santa Coloma de Farners (Girona province), a man of 79, known to have pre-existing heart problems, collapsed and lost consciousness.

Happy in the knowledge that they didn’t buy a fly enclosure because they’re going to be nice ‘n’ warm this winter just as they were nice ‘n’ cool this summer!

He was just about to put his voting slip in the box when he passed out, and was found to have no pulse or breathing. Paramedics on duty gave him CPR, but were unable to revive him. thinkspain

draw would have escaped the attention of the two most prolif ic champions of recent years – drawn in the same half, No.1 seed Novak Djokovic could meet No.3 seed Roger Federer in the semi-f inals. First, three-time champion Djokovic will need to navigate James Ward, before a potential second-round match with another Brit, Kyle Edmund (who faces a qualif ier f irst). Seven-time titlist and three-time f inalist Federer meets Guido Pella of Argentina, before a possible meeting with Ricardas Berankis in the second round. Finalists for the past two years – Djokovic winning the 2014 title in a f ive-set thriller and pushed to four sets as he claimed his third Wimbledon in 2015 – the conclusion of the 2016 Championships, will thus deviate from a pattern of sorts. But that was far from the only intriguing fact that arose from the much-awaited draw. Serena Williams could face rematches against Heather Watson and Roberta Vinci in her quest for a seventh Ladies’ Singles title at Wimbledon.

Meanwhile Vinci, who famously ended Williams’ calendar Grand Slam hopes at the US Open last year, could meet the No.1 seed in the quarter-finals. 2012 finalist Agnieszka Radwanska is in line for a potential semi-final meeting with Williams, and could also face the British No.1 Johanna Konta in the last-16. If No.2 seed Garbine Muguruza is to go one better than her runner-up showing in 2015, she may have to go through both Williams sisters, with Venus drawn in the Spaniard’s quarter. Conquering the mountains of Austria is helping the talented Dominic Thiem scale new heights in tennis. Coach Gunter Bresnik, Boris Becker’s former coach, has made sure of that. “This is not done on a regular basis, but if it is possible I prefer to train outdoors,” Bresnik revealed. “He does a little bit of mountain biking but the main activity is always running. In Austria, to climb up the mountains, to go hiking, gives a mental boost to a player to get to the top. “Similar to a tournament, it can take six, seven, eight hours in all, you stand on top but then in a couple of minutes you start to walk back but it gives you great satisfaction.

Things You Need to Know About Your Thyroid Got weight gain or unexplained fatigue?

That butterfly-shaped gland in your neck may be to blame. Here's what it controls, how to tell if it's healthy and how to keep it that way.

Your thyroid

Located between your voice box and collarbones and no bigger than your thumb, your thyroid affects almost every process in your body. "It produces hormones that regulate your metabolism by controlling how many calories you burn, as well

kim clark benefits consultancy Do you suffer from mobility problems, breathlessness/pain or falls/stumbles?

as how fast or slow your brain, heart, liver, and other organs work," says endocrinologist Christian Nasr, MD, medical director of the Thyroid Center at the Cleveland Clinic. The takeaway: This little gland plays a role in everything from your mood to your periods to your bone health—even the regularity of your number twos. How your thyroid works Your thyroid pumps out the key hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), which are partially composed of iodine. Here’s how the gland affect your well-being, head to toe. Your heart: Thyroid hormones influence your heart rate and help control blood flow

Do you need help washing / dressing or supervision?

by relaxing the muscles in the walls of your blood vessels. Your fertility: Thyroid hormones influence your menstrual cycle. When they’re out of whack, you might have irregular ovulation and periods. Your bones: The rate at which old bone is broken down is driven by thyroid hormones; when that process speeds up, bone is destroyed faster than it can be replaced—which can lead to osteoporosis. Your weight: Because the thyroid regulates your metabolism (how quickly your body burns through fuel), an overactive thyroid—or hyperthyroidism—is linked to weight loss, while hypothyroidism is linked to weight gain. Your brain: Low thyroid levels can bring on forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, and depression. Luckily, these symptoms tend to reverse with synthetic hormone treatment. Your skin: When your thyroid is underactive, your body stops making and shedding skin cells at its normal pace. Cells build up, causing dry, dull-looking skin. (Hair and nail growth slow down as well.)

Thyroid issues are more common in women

We are five to eight times as likely to have thyroid problems as men. But why that’s the case remains a mystery. “The key suspect is estrogen,” says Dr. Nasr. Thyroid cells have a large concentration of estrogen receptors, he explains, which means they’re extra sensitive to the effects of the female sex hormone. Another possible reason: Many causes of hypo- and hyperthyroidism are related to autoimmune diseases, and women are generally

www.soltimes.com more prone to those disorders, explains M. Regina Castro, MD, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic. The most common cause of hypothyroidism, for example, is Hashimoto’s disease (which is about seven times as prevalent in women), and the most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease (which is up to 10 times as prevalent in women).

heightened sensitivity to cold. Hyperthyroidism: Irritability, increased perspiration, racing heartbeat, difficulty sleeping, frequent BMs, unexplained weight loss, less frequent and lighter periods, bulging eyes, shaky hands.

You can’t always blame your thyroid

“One of the most common questions I hear is ‘I’m gaining weight. Could it be my thyroid?’” says endocrinologist Dorothy Fink, MD, assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center. It’s true that if you’re hypothyroid, you may see a change on the scale. But the condition typically comes with other symptoms, too, such as fatigue, constipation, and irregular periods. And even if you are experiencing multiple signs, your doc will likely also consider a hormone dysfunction (such as polycystic ovary syndrome) or perimenopause, as well as unhealthy habits (such as skimping on exercise or sleep). Ideally, says Dr. Fink, your doc would analyze these factors in addition to ordering a blood test for thyroid disease.

Know your symptoms

Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can be challenging to detect because the symptoms tend to be vague and common to other ailments. But if you notice more than two of the signs below, talk to your doctor about having your thyroid tested. Hpothyroidism: Dry skin and hair, forgetfulness, constipation, a rundown feeling, muscle cramps, unexplained weight gain, heavier/irregular menstrual flow, swelling in the face,

A Kodak Moment

Remember the good old days when out dining in a restaurant; someone would whip out their 35mm camera and photograph their dinner; then once the film was finished it would be sent off for processing. A few weeks later with the photos back they would then visit their friends’ houses to show them the photos of the dinner they had eaten a while back? I suspect nobody ever did the above, and other diners would have looked on agog if someone had. What we of a certain age do recall though is that sense of excitement and trepidation from using a film camera. Unless using a Kodak Polaroid camera there was no way of knowing how any picture would turn out. The finished roll was posted off in a special envelope or taken down to Boots the Chemists. Only when the fat envelope thudded onto the doormat or was picked up from the processing lab would the results be known. A commercial photographer could get a sneak preview at the lab but for us mere mortals we’d no idea what results would slide out of the envelope. Nowadays it’s all so different and the word ‘Selfie’ has made it

June 2016

This week the news has been full of angry people on all sides, people complaining or resigning. So lets go completely off track and find some more light hearted news from around the world. The Lithuanian village of Ramygala held its annual beauty pageant on Sunday, the top prize going to a 16-month-old female goat called Demyte, or “Little Spot”. Around 500 people braved the summer heat to attend the parade in honour of the goat, a traditional symbol of the northern village. The pageant also included a marching band, dancers in fancy costumes and a “king” and “queen” presiding over ceremonies. It was the first time Demyte’s owner, 74-year-old retired veterinarian Ferdinandas Petkevicius, had won the competition after six years of trying. “The only thing we didn’t do to prepare the goat for the pageant is we didn’t polish its nails - because we thought of it too late,” said Petkevicius, holding the leash of the winning white goat with black spots, who was decorated with two roses on its head. Six goats decorated with flowers were paraded on a red carpet before a jury comprising the local Member of Parliament, the head of the local school and a cucumber farmer. Several contestants stubbornly refused to walk and were instead carried by their owners. Cakes, jars of honey, books and coupons for a haircut were awarded to winners’ owners, before they walked their goats away from a by-then generously stained red carpet. Met Police officer Proposes A London Metropolitan Police officer taking part in the city’s 43rd annual gay pride parade surprises his lover by getting out of the

police formation and proposing marriage to him as the crowd cheers. A 1992 Olympic gold medal stolen from champion canoeist Joe Jacobi’s car earlier this month in Atlanta was found by a 6-yearold girl and returned to him, he said on Monday. The girl spotted the medal in a wooded area while on a walk with her family on Saturday. The family contacted Jacobi through a website he established after the medal he won in the two-man canoe slalom event in Barcelona, Spain, was stolen from a nearby restaurant parking lot. The medal was missing its base when found, Jacobi said in a phone interview, but appeared mostly intact. Jacobi, 46, displays the medal in speaking events and had it with him for a television appearance in Atlanta the next day. He was inside a restaurant when three men in a Volkswagen Passat drove up and broke car windows in the parking lot, Atlanta police said. Jacobi, who lives in Tennessee, launched a social media campaign with his wife to recover the medal. Although the medal could possibly be restored to its original state, Jacobi said he may keep it the way it is as a reminder of the story behind its loss and recovery. “It’s pretty cool just as it is,” he said in a phone interview. “This is pretty awesome.” Florida man brags about burglary on Facebook, lands him in jail A Florida burglar who posted a Facebook video bragging about a $500,000 jewellery haul has landed himself and one of his accomplices in jail, police said on Thursday. into the dictionary. Oh, and some people insist on photographing their dinner. Usually there were 24 or 36 frames on a roll of 35mm film; sometimes the number reel on the camera kept going and an extra shot or two could be taken before having to hand wind the film back into its cartridge. Simple pleasures eh! In the early 70s Kodak launched its Instamatic brand using a 120 cartridge which didn’t need rewinding. Coincidentally the 120 cameras were relatively slim line, not unlike the size and shape of many mobile phones today. 120 was a hugely successful format and Kodak only stopped making the cameras in the mid-80s; then the film cartridges a couple of years ago. Smaller niche manufactures have now taken over the reins for the many camera buffs out there. Until around 2000 film cameras were the norm rather than the exception. Then as technology leapt forward the digital era stormed the world of photography. In 2003 Kodak launched the EasyShare camera; it was the first camera to have an AMOLED

display screen, the forerunner to the screens used on many phones and tablets nowadays. Kodak had conducted extensive market research discovering that women especially didn’t like the inconvenience of getting photos printed. So the camera was designed to plug straight into a Kodak printer. But, year later they stopped producing film cameras and laid off 15,000 employees. A sad end as the World’s first commercial digital camera was made by Kodak and sold under the Apple label in 1994. Even earlier in1986, the Kodak boffins created the first megapixel sensor; it was capable of taking a 7x5inch photo with its 1.4 megapixels. Even though their R&D was excellent Kodak’s bosses didn’t believe that digital would ever replace film; though their competitors did. Minolta, Sony, Nikon and Fuji were so much better at exploiting the new technology and making more stylish and importantly cheaper products! Kodak went from being a major player in the digital camera market and having 27% of the market in

1999 to filing for bankruptcy in 2012. What also didn’t help Kodak was that as this century grew up, mobiles and then tablets started to get better cameras attached. People kept the devices that did the most. I wonder what would have happened if a Kodak boffin had added a phone attachment to a camera 25 years ago. Kodak also ceased production of their Kodachrome film in 2010 which was something Kodak execs never thought would happen. Kodachrome was introduced in 1935 and was the first commercially available colour film, responsible for many of the iconic images of the 20th Century. Steve McCurry took this shot in1985 for National Geographic using Kodachrome film, it’s known simply as ‘Afghan Girl!

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com RENOUNCING AN INHERITANCE IN FAVOUR OF ANOTHER PERSON CAN BE A VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE QUESTION: My brother and I recently inherited a villa in Mojacar worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keeps the property and I would compensate him. We discussed this with our solicitor and with this as the background agreement, we assisted the notary and we both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the house, half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The solicitor is now saying that the tax office is claiming that, in respect of my half, two taxable transactions have taken place: 1. Inheritance tax on the half to me and 2. a taxable donation to my brother. Is this correct?

ANSWER: I am afraid you have made a very expensive mistake. What the tax office is claiming is correct. In Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed then the tax office taxes the transaction twice (inheritance+donation).

The best solution, depending on the way the will was worded, would have been:

Option 1. If the will states that everything goes to the two of you with the right to accrue the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional). In this case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him, which makes it a donation) who would inherit the complete property directly from your father. Option 2 . If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work. In this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership, which is much cheaper than a donation. The only angle to your situation now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary, claiming that you made a mistake.

Apple’s other holding in Spain, Apple Retail, runs its stores throughout the country and is invoiced by Apple in Ireland for the more expensive products sold, meaning that by settling these invoices, the cash made from sales in Spain goes directly to Ireland and tax is paid at Irish rates. Tax on profits in Spain is double that of the Republic of Ireland. viewpoint

The Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria (Part one) The decision had been taken to build effects, but the cost proved prohibitive.

the Holiday Village east of the Río Verde. The natural barrier afforded by the River would separate Alqueria from the holiday makers. Rodriguez sensing money to be made wanted the lion’s share of the new venture. He put his full weight behind the project and raised the necessary capital. The sale of eighty hectares of land to a Middle-Eastern gentleman financed the project. The land measured two hundred and seventy kilometres long and three metres wide. It was the disused Alqueria to Valencia railway line. The line became uneconomical ten years ago. This was chiefly due to the trains arriving at Alqueria always being empty and those leaving suffering considerable delay while they were thoroughly searched for illicit Remitroot liquor. The ownership of the land, already in dispute became further confused when Rodriquez sold it without the slightest claim to title.

The land to the east of the River was wet, swampy and unfit for human habitation. This was a worry but as they were to target British tourists it was thought they would feel at home there. The Río Verde itself is a stagnant green soup, with strange genetically altered fish and villainous looking amphibians blundering around in its murky depths. The risk of infection is always prevalent if one enters the water and clothing has been known to disintegrate on contact with the it. A plan had been hatched to introduce antibiotics into the food to counter the worst of the River’s

Rodriquez bought twenty prefabricated buildings from the now defunct Ispravitelnotrudovoi lager in Siberia, which he sold to the project at an exorbitant price. The Building Committee did question the suitability of ex-Siberian prison buildings, however the assembly instructions caused more of a concern. Written in Russian, the hieroglyphics meant nothing to the insular Alquerians . When completed instead of resembling the supplied illustrations they took the shape of fanciful Disneyland type structures with no two alike. They would not have disgraced Goudí himself. Staffing the resort was easy. Unemployed from Alqueria, of which there are many, would be trained and given a smattering of English. Unfortunately the only person in the village with grasp of English is Blythe Gruntmore and as a Geordie this grasp is somewhat tenuous, his Spanish is also abysmal. Many happy, hilarious and alcohol soaked nights passed as Blythe passed on his linguistic gems. The sound of an Alquerian Spaniard trying to say “ Welcome te wor village the booza is tha wa bonny lad“ is a wonder to behold. In these troubled times it is indeed a bold venture. Alquerians have always been given to bold gestures, stupid ones but bold none the less. We can only see how the first inmates, or rather guests react to the resort.

The Revenge of the Hosepipe

Hosepipes are a malicious breed; the aim of every hosepipe is to infuriate and thwart the human race at every opportunity. Here are a few of their better-known evasions: Firstly, it does not matter how assiduously I drain the water from it, or how carefully I roll it up, when I pick up the business end it will spit on me with the venom of an enraged llama, preferably on my feet. The trick here is to grasp it firmly by the neck and never, ever let go. I roll it up with all its coils tidily arranged, yet when I unroll it some of the coils will burrow under others, so that it creates a kind of cat’s cradle. This doesn’t pull free, it just knots, so to get it untangled I have to engage in a sort of horticultural Twister most inappropriate for a lady of my maturity and gravitas without letting go of the beast’s neck. Then it has to be stretched out straight. Here it will locate each and every unlevelness in the garden surface, and catch on it. I’ll be walking along with a vicelike grip on the hose’s throat, when it will bring me up short with ‘Can’t go any further, I’m stuck.’ I look round, and see a miniscule pebble sticking up half a millimetre proud of the ground, and over which the hosepipe cannot possible go! However, its chief delight is to kink. There is nothing a hosepipe enjoys more than a good kink! The

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk first I know about this is an abrupt cessation of the water supply at the business end, accompanied by an apoplectic hissing at the tap end. If it achieves a kink once, it will forever after spontaneously kink in the same place each and every time I use it! But the height of its insubordination is reached when I put my trust in it. I place it carefully at the base of a plant, so that I can walk away and do something else while leaving it to do its job unsupervised. It sits there, all sweet compliance and life-giving liquid; it waits until I walk away, then with the grace and innocence of the truly evil it will arch its neck around so that its spray is directed onto the gravel, leaving the poor starving plant desperately gasping at its side. And each and every time I return to redirect it, it will get me! Without fail!

DIRECTIONS

Place the potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and parsnips into a large saucepan and cover with cold water by 2 inches. Bring the water to a simmer, salt it generously and cook the vegetables until just tender, about 10 minutes. Drain well, shaking off as much moisture as possible, and then transfer to a large bowl with the butter. Season with salt and pepper and roughly mash, leaving lots of large, coarse chunks. Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat until brown and crisp, about 8 minutes. Transfer to the bowl with the vegetables using a slotted spoon, leaving as much bacon fat in the skillet as you can. Cook the Brussels sprouts in the same skillet over medium heat until wilted and tender, about 5 minutes, and then transfer to the bowl of vegetables. Mix well and divide the vegetables and bacon into 6 even patties. Refrigerate until ready to cook. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties in batches until the bottoms turn golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes, and then flip and cook until the second sides are crisp and golden brown, another 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a platter. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Crack 3 of the eggs into the pan, sprinkle with salt and pepper and cook until the whites are set. Place 1 egg on top of each bubble and squeak cake. Fry the remaining eggs and place on the remaining cakes, and then serve topped with the chives.

DIRECTIONS

Heat 3 inches of the oil in a deep fryer to 325oF. Peel the potatoes and cut them into chips (that is, fries) about the size of your index finger. Put the potatoes in a fryer basket and lower into the oil. Film Review

The Two Faces of January

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

“Truth is we’re joined at the hips. I get caught, I take you down. You get caught, you turn me in.” If you’re a fan of Hitchcock or Patricia Highsmith and love psychological thrillers, this film is for you. I’m sure you’re familiar with the Ripley books by Highsmith so you’ll find similar underlying themes with fraudsters, murders and of course, men on the run! For well-known screenwriter Hossein Amini, this was to prove a successful directorial debut joining the prolific ranks of Clement, Hitchcock and Minghella, reminding us of the thrill and tension, on the edge of your seat tension that is characteristic of this genre. Where Amini excels is in conveying subtle and unspoken tension particularly with the Alpha males sparring over Colette. The cold-hearted stares and the grimaces will give you the creeps followed by the profanities and the scuffles. The title of the film alludes to the two faces of Janus, the Roman God, one face looking to the future, the other to the past. We are told about the mythical tale of Theseus and the minotaur from the two main characters who seem to be on a sight-seeing tour of the Acropolis in Athens, laying early foundations of a tragedy in the making. The third character is a tourist guide and he relishes the opportunity to tell some besotted female tourists about this tragic story. Chester Macfarland is played by Viggo Mortensen of Lord of the Rings fame. Remember Aragorn with the long hair? Mortensen has been described by critic Odie Henderson as “dangerously sexy and morally dubious.” He is a 42 year old wealthy American financier who seems to have recently wedded wife number 2-another glamorous and beautiful blonde, 25 but relatively poor, played by Kirsten Dunst. (Interview with the Vampire, Spiderman 1 and 2.) Chester reads from a tourist guide, the mood seems happy and the couple are relaxed as they stroll around the Acropolis as if they didn’t have a care in the world. But looks can be deceptive, can’t they? Rydal Keener, a Greek speaking American, who majored in Economics from Yale played by hunky Oscar Isaac (

Guerilla, the t.v. series Law and Order and Body of Lies) is a tourist guide and a poet. He is interested in Chester because he reminds him of his late father although he is more interested in Colette as a sexual playmate. Rydal flirts with the young female tourists, in particular Lauren van Buren who is meant to be related to the 8th President and then takes advantage of them by scamming them, something that Chester seems aware of. Colette tells her husband that she likes Rydal and there are hints of her promiscuity further afield. Chester is insanely jealous and once he starts knocking back the whisky he becomes a dangerous man. Colette assures Chester that her interest in Rydal is non-sexual, however no-one believes her! Once you feel the chemistry between the two you’ll understand what I mean. Things come to a head when a private detective finally catches up with Chester. “I thought you said no-one would follow us?” asks Colette, alarmed when a strange man storms into their hotel room whilst indulging in some horse-play. We learn that Chester has been mixed up with Canadian oil shares. “He sold them shares in an oil field that didn’t exist. Them and hundreds of other people.” So, pay-back time it is! “You reimburse my clients, I’ll go back home to my family and leave your lovely wife and you alone.” Fair enough. This is when we start to realise the truth about Chester MacFarland and why he is on the run and unable to return to the States with his young wife. Chester wants to cut a deal before a scuffle breaks out-the first of many. Rydal makes an appearance at an inopportune moment and unwittingly become an accomplice to a crime, jeopardising what is left of his shaky integrity and compromising his position completely. In Chester’s own words he refers to him as a “right criminal.” From then onwards we know that things can only get worse. Avoiding arrest is the name of the game. The backdrop of Athens, Crete and Istanbul, Turkey add to the charm of this thriller, a good script and first-class acting. Does anyone survive or do they all go down? Find out.

AGUILON GOLF MEMBERS REPORT

A lovely time of year to be playing golf, with the golf course looking in prime condition and the heat still being bearable, our members are taking full advantage with the scoring being consistently better than we have seen for a long time. RESULTS Wednesday June 15 – Individual Stableford Another fine day with the greens getting back to their best following the “hollow tinning” and our members “taming” a normally dangerous course layout. 1st Bill Gibb 40pts 2nd Chris Baker 37pts on a card playoff 3rd Phil Miles 37pts Twos: Dave Sharp 12th, Chris Baker & David Gray 17th Friday June 17 – Top Banana Challenge – La Envia A team of eleven members made their way down to La Envia golf course to

compete for the first time in this team challenge with an overnight stay in the 5 star hotel, the course had a full capacity of players for the shotgun start, whilst some of our non-golfing ladies made full use of the shopping centre in Roquetas, the hotel spa and swimming pool. Our members were more than happy to come a creditable 2nd overall and a nearest the pin prize for Bill Gibb and were made happier still by the evening barb-e-que, drinks and entertainment, we are looking forward to more of the same next year. Guests and visitors are welcome to join us on a Mon and Friday with prior arrangement. For information contact Les on 634 641 199 or Norman on 609 435 328 or log on to our website at aguilonmembersclub.com

Well worth the wait for Dave White

Friday 24th June was a day that will be long remembered by all the forty plus Forum Golf Society members that contested an individual stableford competition at Aguilon. No, not because it was the day that saw the UK referendum result in an exit from the EU, but because it was the day that, after nearly nine years of trying Dave White finally won an individual competition, and judging by the applause that greeted his victory it was very well worth the wait. Dave’s score of 37 points was two better than Andy Birch (second), Kevin Bircher (third) and Adrienne Ruiz (fourth) who each scored 35 points, with Malcolm Sibbons (34 points) fifth & Pat Garrigan sixth, one of eight players on 33 points. Dave White completed an excellent day by claiming one of the nearest the pin prizes, with the others going to Richard Swaine, Adrienne Ruiz and Chris Mardon. Yvonne Mackay comfortably won the longest drive, and was one of nine Forum lady members to win a prize, a fact that did not go unnoticed by a certain number of the male members present Forum´s upcoming fixtures are 8th July Double Par Medal at Aguilon (Forum’s 250th fixture), 22nd July Stableford at Lorca, 29th July North v South match play day at Aguilon. Messi quits argentina

Messi, who made his debut for Argentina in 2005 and has played 113 times for his country. “It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn’t get it, so I think its over. “I think this is best for everyone. First of all for me, then for everyone. “I think there’s a lot of people who want this, who obviously are not satisfied, as we are not satisfied reaching a final and not winning it. “It’s very hard, but the decision is taken. Now I will not try more and there will be no going back.” Messi had scored five times at this year’s Copa America, including a superb free-kick in the semi-final win over hosts the USA. That goal made him his country’s record scorer with 55 goals, eclipsing the 54-goal mark of striker Gabriel Batistuta.

Lionel Messi has retired from international duty after missing in a penalty shootout as Argentina lost a fourth major final in nine years. “For me, the national team is over.” he said after defeat by Chile in the Copa America final. “I’ve done all I can. It hurts not to be a champion.” Messi, 29, has won eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with Spanish side Barcelona. But his only major international honour is Olympic gold at the 2008 Games. As well as losing two Copa America finals on penalties to Chile, Messi was in the Argentina side beaten 1-0 by Germany in the 2014 World Cup final. The forward, who was been awarded the Ballon d’Or five times, was also on the losing side against Brazil in the Marina Phoenix play Mondays 2007 Copa America final. The individual stableford competition at Marina Phoenix saw the Kings rule as Tony King scored 41 points to win the men’s division ahead of Phil Tottie (37). Third place went to Bob Craig (36). Linda King scored first place with 33 points in the ladies division, on countback, from Margaret Budd (33) in second and Rosalie Fardon (31) finishing third. blanc leave psg

Laurent Blanc has left his position as manager of Paris StGermain after three years at the French league champions.

Blanc, who signed a new twoyear deal in February, led PSG to the Ligue 1 title in each of his three seasons in charge, but lost in the Champions League quarter-finals each year. Sevilla boss Umai Emery has been linked with the vacant post. Emery, 44, won the Europa League with the La Liga side in each of his three full seasons in charge. Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said earlier this month “big changes will happen”, adding: “I’ve been here for five years and this is the first time we have had this sense of failure.” PSG, who have won consecutive domestic quadruples, lost to Manchester City in last season’s Champions League quarterfinals. bbc.com

rafa who? here comes Spain’s new superstar Muguruza

Wimbledon will naturally miss an old favourite with Rafael Nadal sidelined by injury yet Garbine Muguruza, armed with her sunny demeanour and blistering talent, seems perfectly happy and equipped to fill the void left by her great Spanish compatriot. Donning a replica Spanish football team shirt and beaming the big smile that lit up Wimbledon last year when she reached the final, Muguruza did her bit on Saturday to remind everyone that Spain has a new superstar with the charisma to emulate Nadal. Not that the new French Open champion could quite credit the fact that she was grabbing all the headlines back home rather than the man she idolised while growing up in Barcelona. After Nadal pulled out of the French Open with the wrist injury that has now prevented him shooting for a third Wimbledon title, Muguruza flew the flag with her stunning victory over Serena Williams in the Roland Garros final. So entering Wimbledon, the Spanish media spotlight, usually beamed at Nadal, is trained completely on their 22-year-old Venezuelan-born heroine. “I thought about that the other day when I saw Rafa was not playing (at Wimbledon),” Muguruza smiled at a news conference at Wimbledon on Saturday. “For sure, people are looking more at what I’m doing but I think that’s fine. It’s a good sign. I like it. “I was so happy finally this year. I’m like ‘I did better than Nadal in French Open! This is so weird!’” Muguruza is having to quickly get used to the fact that having a spectacular game to accompany a winning personality is a combination guaranteed to rocket her into the sporting elite - but she swears the Paris tour de force has not changed her. “Nothing really different. Maybe it’s weird, but no,” she shrugged. Yet, apart from her natural, cheery manner with the media, she is in many ways unrecognisable now from the kid who waltzed into Wimbledon last year as a promising talent and ended it as a finalist bold enough to give even Williams a fright. She now stands as the world’s number two player, so assured and accomplished

Tel 950 680 007

that she appears the one best equipped to halt Williams’ march to a recordequalling 22nd grand slam title. “I’m, like, (it’s) so quick and a lot of things have happened in between (the two Wimbledons). I mean, I can’t believe it,” said Muguruza. Something else she finds fairly incredible is the thought of playing alongside Nadal at the Rio Olympics, especially as neither of them normally play mixed doubles. When will they ever get chance to practice together? “I have no idea,” she laughed. “I think last minute. It’s going to be like ‘Well, Rafa, what do you do?’ ‘I don’t know. You?’ We’ll figure it out.” Before then, there’s the chance to make her mark on the grass again, a surface which, like many of her claycourt-loving compatriots, she once felt was only for cows. “A lot of people were saying ‘I think you will play good on grass’ and I’m like ‘there’s no way, I hate grass. I’m horrible’.” Yet now she thinks that maybe they were right after all. “My shots are pretty aggressive, strong and deep, and I go for the shots. On grass, maybe you kind of feel more that fast game. “I had a love and hate with Wimbledon because at the beginning it was hard for me. With time, I’ve got more used to grass and I think my style of game helps.” Muguruza was wearing the red shirt to show her love for Spain’s Euro 2016 team - “In Spain, if you don’t follow football, you’re dead!” she laughed - but a whole nation appears to be smitten with her too now.

To add insult to injury, Rossi took the lead after the race restarted following a red flag for worsening conditions, but he only lasted three laps before falling and being forced to retire. Rossi’s retirement at Assen paved the way for Honda’s Jack Miller to claim his first MotoGP victory, while Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez came in second, extending his lead over Rossi on the MotoGP standings to 42 points. “It is a great shame, because today we had a chance to claim a good result and take some important points for the championship,” he told reporters. “In the dry I had a good pace, and things weren’t so bad in the rain. “I think it was right to red flag the race because there was too much water and it began to get very dangerous. The bike started to aquaplane a lot and you couldn’t see anything behind another bike. “I made a mistake as I was going

too fast. I pushed too hard. It was too much. It was a stupid mistake unfortunately and I’m very sorry, especially for the team, because today we could have won.” Despite being disappointment with the way in which his Assen campaign concluded, Rossi lauded Miller for keeping his composure to become the first non-factory rider to win a MotoGP race in a decade. “Jack’s victory is the only good thing to come from today because we have a good relationship,” he said. “I like him a lot. I love it when he drinks from the boot [on podium]! “I’m very happy for him. He deserves it after the injury at the beginning of the year. He is a great guy and I think he has a lot of talent.” Foxsports.com
