Almeria are up by 93 per cent when compared with Q3 2015, according to the registrars’ figures. With the rest of Spain growing modestly, Almeria stands out as enjoying a significant boom. Almeria is
in Andalusia, on Spain’s southern, Mediterranean coastline. While other Costas were busy erecting high rise developments in the late 1960s, to cram in as many tourists as possible, Costa Almeria remained largely untouched. Today, the coastal towns of Almeria effuse a sun-kissed charm that their more developed neighbours have lost for good. Costa Almeria offers exceptional value for money. Property here costs a fraction of what it does in the neighbouring Costas. Indeed, in Almeria, the average property costs €129,000,

compared to Alicante (€210,000) and Malaga (€295,000). Almeria was the 16th most soughtafter destination in the world in TheMoveChannel. com’s Q4 2016 hotspots index , which marked the region’s first time in the top 50 and shows it is an emerging destination. Indeed, enquiries for Spanish property overall on TheMoveChannel. com doubled month-on-month in December 2016. Spain dominated the Hotspots Index, accounting for 18
out of the Top 50 hotspots up from 10 in Q3 and higher than any other country. The number of transactions registered in November 2016 climbed by 17 per cent year-on-year. On average, Spanish property is now 41.3 per cent below the market’s 2007 peak – according to Tinsa index. With both value in Almeria and the Costa’s growth in recent months and beyond, makes it a worthy prospect for investors still looking for Spanish property.

NEWS La Vuelta returns ONE of the world’s toughest cycling races is coming back Andalucia this year. Almost one quarter of the brutal 3297.7km long La Vuelta will take place between August 30 and September 3 in the region, which was entirely missed off the contest’s route last year. Coin and Motril are among the starting locations for the five gruelling Andaluz stages, which will also pass through the cities of Malaga, Sevilla and Granada and the mountains The thrilling 21 stage race will this year start in Nimes in south France on August 19 before making its way down the eastern coast of Spain. It will hit Andalucia on August 30, when over 200 cyclists will ride from Lorca in Murcia to Almeria’s Calar Alto Observatorio in the 11th stage.
The Spanish government said it has approved a royal decree that will give banks three months to reach settlements with customers who were sold mortgages with interest rate floors that were not clearly explained. The royal decree - a law fast-tracked through Parliament - aims to allow customers that were sold these mortgages to agree some form of compensation with their banks free of charge. It also aims to prevent a wave of lawsuits against the banks. These home loans were sold with an interest rate that could not fall below a certain level, which meant customers missed out when rates dropped below that minimum. In December, the European Court of Justice said Spanish banks must

compensate customers who took out these mortgages, overturning a Spanish court ruling that had put a cap on what banks should pay. The Bank of Spain has estimated the cost to the banks at 4 billion euros. The banks must now contact customers to offer them a settlement and have one month to set the process in motion. If they come up with a compensation offer, customers have 15 days to accept. About 1.5 million customers who were sold those mortgages will still have the right to seek to get their money back in the courts, potentially creating a new legal headache for Spanish banks and hitting their bottom line. BBVA, Spain’s second largest bank, said in December the ECJ ruling
would knock its full-year earnings for 2016 by 404 million euros. BBVA executive chairman Francisco Gonzalez said in Davos on Thursday that the bank would proceed according to the new law but also said: “It is important to look at the big picture and preserve legal security.” A spokesman for BBVA said the bank would wait for the Spain’s Supreme Court interpretation of the ECJ ruling, expected in the following weeks or months, before deciding how to proceed. Banco Sabadell has said its mortgages were still valid as they had been presented clearly. Deutsche Bank analysts have estimated the bank could be liable for charges worth as much as 490 million euros.

Spain wants quick deal
Spain’s foreign minister has rejected the prospect of a “punitive” Brexit agreement that would hurt London, as the country pushes for UKEU talks to begin as soon as possible. Alfonso Dastis presented his country as sympathetic to many of Britain’s key demands, with reports saying that he agrees with London that trade deal negotiations should take place at the same time as exit talks. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy declared Brexit to be a “serious threat”. “Without wanting to go into other considerations, I will only tell you that one in five tourists who come to Spain are
British, and close to 17 million Britons visited Spain last year... “I will also tell you that the United Kingdom is the first destination for Spanish companies’ investment and our third commercial partner.” More than 300,000 Britons officially reside in Spain, but estimates suggest the actual figure may be between 800,000 to a million. Rajoy also warned that the forthcoming elections in France and Germany, where Eurospectic parties will be looking to make a big splash, would be “decisive” in terms of how the bloc would proceed. “Spain... hopes that its two biggest partners will maintain their proEU vocation”.

Government loses Supreme Court case
Theresa May needs the approval of Parliament to trigger the Brexit process, Britain’s most senior judges have ruled. The Supreme Court has decided that MPs must be given a vote on triggering Article 50, the formal mechanism for leaving
the European Union. The Prime Minister has said she intends to do this by the end of March. Although it is thought to be unlikely that the Government will lose a vote in Parliament, the Supreme Court’s decision, by an 8-3 majority,

44 immigrants rescued from boat
Maritime Rescue has rescued 44 immigrants who were traveling in a boat intercepted 27 nautical miles (about 50 kilometres) south of Almeria. All the occupants of the boat are men and are in apparent good health.
A spokesman for Salvamento Marítimo has reported that a co-operant warned on Sunday of the departure of this boat, in the early morning, from the coast of Bouyafar in Morocco. This rescue came after 19 other sub-Saharan

Extensions Alert
After 19 years experience in the UK we are now Official distributors of K-life & Kleeneze Products in Spain MOJACAR is one of 12 places in Almeria where property owners who built sneaky pools or extensions could face hefty bills and fines this year. The Ministry of the Treasury, aka the taxman, and the property registry have announced that the town, along with Albanchez, Enix, Feliz, Gador, Huercal de Almeria, Lucainena de las Torres, Lucar, Pulpi, Somontin, Vicar and Zurgena, will be examined this year. Images taken from
satellites, helicopters and even drones are compared with property registers to see whether owners have failed to declare any swimming pools, garages, extensions or other additions to avoid paying higher taxes. If this is found to be the case, the local town hall is informed and will notify property owners. A one-off fee of €60 per property is charged to update the register and owners are required to pay the difference in property taxes for up to
four years, plus interest. The inspection scheme has been running since 2013 and will this year examine 1,272 municipalities across Spain. Many have criticised the scheme, including socialist party PSOE’s Economy spokesman Pedro Saura, who complained that the €60 fee to regularise extensions is the same for a Marbella mansion as for a tiny farm in the sticks.

Trump Bows to Judges’ Orders
President Donald Trump‘s Department of Homeland Security announced it would comply with a bevy of federal judges’ injunctions against portions of his executive order barring entry to people from seven Muslim-majority nations—but declared it would continue to press ahead with the rest of the White House fiats. The agency’s announcement came this afternoon after Brooklyn Judge Ann Donnelly issued a restraining order forbidding DHS’s Border and Customs Enforcement arm from deporting any of the people held at John F. Kennedy Airport and at hubs nationwide approved to enter the country under President Barack Obama. Two federal jurists in Massachusetts enjoined the administration from detaining or expelling
any arrival from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen, Iran or Iraq who was either a legal permanent resident of the U.S. or possessed a proper visa—while a federal judge in Virginia granted those detained access to legal counsel. DHS’s promise of compliance was buried at the bottom of an otherwise petulant public statement.
“The Department of Homeland Security will comply with judicial orders; faithfully enforce our immigration laws, and implement President Trump’s executive orders to ensure that those entering the United States do not pose a threat to our country or the American people,” the statement reads.

WILL SPAIN'S COAL BELT SURVIVE THROUGH ONLINE BARTER?
The sons and daughters of miners in the deserted coalfields of northern Spain face two choices: leave to find work, or innovate to be able to stay. Now, they have developed an online barter economy, which they say is helping them return to their rural roots. But can it really work? Javi Fernandez's small house is surrounded by edible plants. Among traditional winter crops grown in this area, like verza, a kind of cabbage, there's also mustard, Jerusalem artichokes, and shiitake mushrooms. It's a small patch of bounty amid miles of empty, rolling hills. Rather than study engineering to work in the coal mines like both his father and grandfather, Mr Fernandez studied agriculture in Cuba. "I couldn't afford to go to a paying university so I studied for free at the ISCA University, in San Jose de las Lajas," he beams, digging through the 400 sq m (4,300 sq ft) of artichokes he has planted. Asturias became a centre for coal production in Spain in the late 19th Century, but waves of closures have left whole towns deserted and hundreds of thousands of
miners unemployed. And the EU is ending all subsidies for the coalfields by 2018, sounding the death knell for the industry in the region. Cultivating mushrooms enables Javi Fernandez to get things he needs through barter Javi brings a range of produce to market, thanks to skills he learnt in Cuba Javi Fernandez uses a traditional Asturian technique to grow his mushrooms: harvesting branches from the forest, drilling small holes and impregnating them with spores, before covering the holes in beeswax and leaving them in the dark for a year. Then he makes shiitake pate, dries and cures the mushrooms, and powders them so they can be taken in pill form. For all his work, he earned no money at all until recently. Instead, he put his produce into an online barter economy, trading it for other things he needs. "Up in the mountains there's a serious liquidity problem," he says. "People find it easier to barter because money simply isn't available." Twice a month, he takes his produce to a local village market, with a sale already agreed online. mountains, come with a wide range of offers, from building, teaching and manual labour to giving legal advice and translation. Spain is far from the only country where barter is gaining traction at the margins of the economy. Barter is probably the oldest form of commerce, involving trade of goods or services with no money involved. And in this area of northern Spain, networks such as Rastru have developed that allow users to go online to match offers and needs, in a digital twist on an ancient tradition. The system adopted by Rastru - which stands for Asturian network of barter communities equates one trade-point known as a "copin" to one euro. It enables users to barter directly, or rack up the digital currency to get goods and services from others in the community. To attract business, users can also deal in a mix of euros and points. Asturias miners saw the pits close, leaving a tough legacy for their children "Barter means you can leave the bureaucracy alone, and that people who wouldn't otherwise have access to money have a way of surviving in the countryside," says Sergio Palacio Martin, who helped found the
initiative and is also the son of a miner. "The first stories that appeared about what's happening said we were all hippies. Now they're calling us entrepreneurs." Across Asturias there are 78 municipalities, divided into nodes, he explains. Each one works autonomously. Since it started four years ago, nearly 1,500 users have shifted €350,000 (£300,000; $375,000) of produce between them. Until the mid-19th Century, most people from Asturias lived in smallholdings similar to that of Javi Fernandez. As coal and steel mining took hold, rural areas were abandoned and the central cities and industrial centres became overpopulated. But Mr Fernandez says that has all changed and speaks of a big movement. "People from Asturias are returning to the mountains. They are having to learn about their rural environment, because there's nothing else for them, there's no work." Violeta is happy that local people are returning to their rural roots Further up the mountain,
Violeta cuts pumpkins and turnips for a stew she's making for her kids. "It's not really new, this movement to the countryside," she says. "People were already rural, but then they moved to the city. Now a generation's moving back. It's just another episode; a return to their roots." And there are opportunities here too. Asturias boasts 200,000 hectares of virgin, chestnut forest - Europe's biggest, says Javi. For now, the chestnuts drop to the ground and are eaten by wild boars. The mild climate and rich soil are good for farming. "We have all we need here," says Violeta. "We came to make a future for ourselves, because in the city the future's dark and there are no possibilities. Here the possibilities are endless. There's forest, there's water, there's sun. We have what we want. " The bartering activity is modest, and will not provide a lasting solution to these young people's problems. But it is a start and offers a chance to navigate a period of uncertainty and industrial decline.

Officers managed to locate and pull out the younger daughter, but were unable to revive her. Firefighters were later called in for help to extract the parents from under the mountain of clothes, the daily said, adding it was unclear why the stack of boxes collapsed. Nokia’s vision for the future of healthcare Some technology companies are destined to be forever associated with one moment, be it a spectacular flop, like the Sinclair C5, or an innovation that changed the world, like Sony’s Walkman. For Nokia, associations with the first flowering of the mass market in mobile phones are proving hard to shake.
Since the humbled Finnish giant sold its mobile phone division to Microsoft in 2013 for £4.6bn it has been focused on behindthe-scenes technology, including broadband, network infrastructure and maps. Now, however, it is attempting a comeback as a consumer brand. Last year it paid €170m

THE ISLAND BY VICTORIA HISLOP
“A single shot ricocheted across the water, the noise amplified by the echo from the mountains behind, and a crimson blanket spread itself slowly across the still sea.” Spinalonga was a former leper colony where people were exiled from 1903-1957 in northern Crete. During the second world war the Germans occupied the island as well as allied forces. Hislop has combined history with fiction, presenting the reader with a moving portrayal of four generations of one family blighted by leprosy, war and its legacy. Alexis Fielding is 25, working in a museum and likely to follow in her father’s footsteps in archaeology. Ed was her boyfriend of 3 years and what was once a promising affair has now turned sour “like a sickly cutting that had failed to survive being transplanted from greenhouse to border.” They were meant to be on holiday but conflict, arguments and lots of self-reflection amounted to doubts over suitability and compatibility. Curiosity about her mother, Sofia who was born on the island of Crete resulted in Alexis trekking to Plaka to find a family friend called Fortini who hopefully would unravel the family history which inevitably meant unearthing the skeletons in the closet, a disclosure that knocked Alexis for six! From 2001 the story reverts to 1939 with Alexis’s great grandparents and the tragic revelation that her great grandmother Eleni had developed the virulent strain of leprosy and was condemned to the place of the living dead, Spinalonga to end her days in suffering and torment before being laid to rest in a communal and unmarked grave. Ironically, fate dealt another severe blow when one of Eleni’s daughter, Maria was diagnosed with the same disease as her mother and followed a similar fate almost in 1953. Timing was cruel-she was about to celebrate her marriage to a local
Special Offers Visit:
Romeo whe she was exiled to the rock as it was called. Fortunately there were doctors researching the disease and a cure was eventually found, although it was too late for those who had succumbed to the disease. When the Germans arrived during the 40s they committed murder and mutilation destroying villages and its inhabitants fearing the Allied forces and the Resistance which proved a threat to their occupation of Crete. They threatened to exterminate all male inhabitants of the villages aiding the Allies. A young male leper from the island was brutally murdered trying to swim to Plaka to celebrate his son’s 3rd birthday in the late summer of 1943. Obviously, they were nervous of leprosy spreading and wanted it contained on Spinalonga. Fortini is thorough and yet sensitive as she retells stories about the lives of those affected by jealousy and betrayal in hard times when the war added an extra strain of misery. “Our so called fate is largely ordained by our ancestors, not by the stars.” Three generations of lives were so intertwined. Eleni and Maria’s sad fate was the tip of the iceberg. Pandora regretted opening her box. Would it be the same for Alexis when she discovered what happened to her grandmother Anna and her husband? Alexis is certainly shocked by what she hears but matures and consequently grows closer to her mother and these revelations have the added bonus of helping her to decide on her future with Ed. It’s a wonderful story, deep and fulfilling. It deserves a read. Carol Naylor. REVIEW it.
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail. co.uk. Today I would like to talk about that perennial nutmeg ‘Robocalls and Telemarketers’. To be a little more precise, how to stop them! First a simple question for those of us who haven’t heard the term ‘RoboCalls’, what are they? A robocall is a phone call that uses a computerized auto-dialer to deliver a pre-recorded message, as if from a robot. Modern robocalls aren’t just telemarketers trying to sell you something. They’re often scammers trying to trick you into parting with your money or identity information. So how do you stop them from coming in? I started my search by type ‘“do not call” registry Spain’ into google and immediately found a link to something called ‘Listas Robinson’ or ‘The Robinson List’. (Do Not Call Registers are sometimes known as Robinson Lists – a reference to the privacy and isolation of the Swiss Family Robinson.) The easiest and most efficient way to get the person to stop calling you requires you to say one sentence: “Please put me on your do not call list.” You must say only this! As any other phrasing might be ambiguous enough for them to ignore your request! If they choose to ignore your correctly phrased
February 2017
request, they can face a fine of $40,000! The next step is to install a program on your phone that keeps and up-todate list numbers that people reported as unwanted. The first ‘App’ that recommended is called ‘Mr Number’ and is available on both the Android and Apple iPhone. They have a website which asks you to include your number which is added to the list that legitimate companies ‘lock-out’ of their ‘Autodialer’ software. Now there will be people (Scammers, thieves and general bad people) who aren’t interested in letting your money go that easily. So how do you stop them? On Android 6 (Marshmallow) and later the easiest way to do this is to long-press the number in your call log, then select “Block number.” This is something that people have been calling for, for several years! For the older versions then you have to add the number to your phone book (I use the name ‘Blocked’) and once in you simply select the blocked number from the address book, press the menu button (off screen, bottom left usually) and you will get the option to block this number – done. On iPhone you simply ignore the call, then subsequently open your call history so you can block them. If you’re in the Phone app under ‘Recents’, tap the (i) symbol next to the phone number or contact that you want to block. Scroll to the bottom of your screen, then tap Block this Caller. For now, though, these solutions should help diminish the problem, if not eliminate it entirely.

WHERE TO BUY IN SPAIN The lure of sun, sea and sand is very strong, but properties near the sea are generally more expensive than those inland, and perhaps just 20 minutes’ drive away from the coast you will find houses or apartments which are much better value and have more outside space. These could be in a small village or town, or on an urbanisation, built to cater for locals and foreigners alike. Seaside complexes or urbanisations carry community charges, as do apartment blocks, so you should look into the terms and costs of these charges carefully before you commit to buying a property. All along the coast, you will find villas of different styles and sizes. In North East Spain, properties with a sea view are still expensive, despite the fall in property prices. Properties here tend to be second homes, and are used largely during the summer months when people from the big cities such as Barcelona, London, Paris, and so on, escape to their idyll be the sea. Apartments, which are closed for up to 5 months of the year are aired and thrown open to the wind and the sun most weekends around Easter time, and are fully occupied as summer approaches. These properties are often let out to tourists to help pay the maintenance costs or mortgage. You should also be aware that owners are now required to apply
17
950 121 936 - sales@soltimes.com
for a licence to let their property and these are not always approved. Get your lawyer to check with the local town hall about any policies on letting to tourists. If you are retired and moving to Spain, you should think about what facilities you need close to your property - it’s all very well to buy a villa on a cliff with a wonderful view, but it is likely that such a property will have numerous steps and will be some distance from the nearest shop - so you will have to go out by car every time you need something. The larger coastal resorts stay open 12 months of the year. Many are attracted to the pretty inland towns and villages, surrounded by vineyards and steeped in history. Again, there are urbanisations in the country areas, but also typical village houses, either of natural stone, or as in Andalucia, painted white. Village properties are cheaper than in the big towns (unless it is a village which particularly attracts tourists such as Mijas (Andalucia) or Pals (Catalunya)), but they are more likely to need some (if not total) renovation, these properties are nevertheless popular, especially when everything is within walking distance.

Family crushed to death by their clothes
A family in Spain were crushed to death by hundreds of kilos of clothes that fell on them after breaking through the first floor of their flat. The bodies of the married couple and their 12-year-old daughter were found by their other child, an 18-year-old girl, at their home in Alicante on the Costa Blanca. It is believed the man, 49, his wife, 50, and their child were either crushed or suffocated by the huge pile of clothes that they had accumulated over the

years. Part of the floor on the upstairs of the apartment had caved in under the weight and all three victims were found buried under the clothes mountain. Investigators say the teenage daughter did not find her family until several hours after the freak accident occurred as she had been asleep at the time. Firefighters were called in to help police remove the clothes so they could pull the bodies out.
The married couple, who were of Moroccan origin, suffered “a kind of Diogenes Syndrome, which led them to compulsively accumulate all kinds of clothing,” according to sources. One local resident said: “From the back of the house, you can see the balcony and there were stacks and stacks of boxes right up to the top.” An autopsy is now being carried out on the victims to determine if they died from asphyxiation.

Starbucks CEO pledges to hire 10,000 refugees globally
Starbucks has pledged to hire 10,000 refugees globally over the next five years, in response to US President Donald Trump’s recent immigration ban. In an open letter to staff, chief executive Howard Schultz said the president’s order had caused “confusion, surprise and opposition”. Recruitment will begin in the US and focus on people who had served or supported the military. Mr Schultz is the latest US corporate chief to criticise the ban. Silicon Valley heavyweights including Facebook, Google and Tesla have made public statements, while Airbnb is offering free accommodation to people affected by the travel restrictions and unable to get into the

QUESTION: I am trying to help my mother who has very bad health and wishes to move back to the UK but has not managed to sell her Spanish property yet. From a legal point are there any matters to take care of before she comes back? ANSWER 1. Make sure her Spanish will is in good order. There have been some changes to the laws recently which make it convenient to have a solicitor take a look at it. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers. 3. Make sure internet banking is set up on her Spanish bank account. 4. Your mother may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with her Spanish assets (in case a buyer is found and
she does not wish or is not able to visit Spain). 5. Look in to the advantages/disadvantages of selling quickly now versus holding on and waiting for a better price. From a tax point of view, if she is a resident and over 65, there is a certain advantage to selling before she loses her resident status in Spain, as she is entitled to a 100% exemption from capital gains tax. 6. Meet her solicitor before you leave in case you later need to deal with things remotely. Depending on your circumstances there could be other things to do, but I would at least cover these items.

US. On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order barring immigrants from seven majorityMuslim countries for a minimum of 90 days, and suspending the US refugee program for 120 days. Mr Schultz said he wrote to employees with “deep concern, a heavy heart and a resolute promise” - adding he wanted them to know that the firm would

EUROPEAN SHARES FALL AS WEAKER COMMODITY, BANK STOCKS OFFSET MERGER TALK
Tel: 950 121 936 sales@soltimes.com
European shares fell on Monday, weighed down by losses among commodities-related stocks and banks, though speculation about merger and acquisition activity offered some support with Vodafone (VOD.L) among the leading gainers. Vodafone rose 3 percent after the British phone group said it was in talks to merge its Indian unit with Idea (IDEA.NS) in an all-share deal that could help counter fierce competition. “Something had to be done and this merger might be the way to strengthen Vodafone’s

hand in the Indian price war,” said ETX Capital analyst Neil Wilson in a note. Gains in Vodafone made Europe’s telecoms index .SX7P the only one to trade in positive territory. The STOXX 600 fell 0.9 percent, with the mood among investors dampened after U.S President Donald Trump introduced a travel ban, increasing concerns about the impact of his policies on global trade and the economy. But despite those losses the pan-European index is still up 0.4 percent so far in January and set for its third straight month
of gains.
The surge seen in recent weeks has reflected optimism over Trump’s plans to boost the economy with tax cuts and deregulation, as well as a good start to the earnings season and growing merger speculation. On Monday M&A talk lifted shares in British engineering firm Atkins WS (ATKW.L), which jumped 4.8 percent on a report of a $4 billion merger approach from U.S. company CH2M.

THE GREAT SNOWSTORM OF 17
It snowed in Alqueria for the first time in living memory. If anyone wishes to check the metrological records of our Village Republic they will see that this is so. Normally a cynical temperature inversion keeps Alqueria warm and balmy but covered in a worryingly sticky, green and foul smelling mist while the rest of the Iberian Peninsular freezes. This system however has failed for whatever reason and Alqueria is up to its nether regions in the freezing result of sublimation. Loco Paco put it down to divine intervention aimed at punishing the people of Alqueria for not recognising his imaginary five foot rodent friend ‘Bert’ as a living entity and worthy of housing benefit and a Winter fuel allowance. Whatever the reason Alqueria was isolated by a wall of snow making a change from it being isolated by apathy and high powered inertia.
Rodriquez who had never stepped foot outside Alqueria, mainly because when he did gentlemen in green uniforms and blue lights on their cars escorted him back again tried to bottle it and sell it. He was very disappointed when he discovered it had no street value and went back to manufacturing counterfeit Remitroot codpieces which sold well among certain members of the British House of Lords. Manuela knew all about snow and the
frost bite it can cause to exposed regions of the body. Suffice it to say Manuela has suffered greatly from this particular malady and has ceased all alfresco pursuits until the milder weather arrives. Antonio Poyato’s first though was to test the snow for alcohol content in case it was a competitor for his Remitroot Wine, Whisky and Beer. It was of great relief that the analysis only showed heavy metals, hydrocarbons and a strange strain of bacteria that is usually only present between the toes of Afghan camels drivers over the age of fifty-five.
Communications between Alqueria and the outside world ceased to function and no vehicles could enter of leave the Pueblo. On this news stock markets reached record highs and foreign currencies surged. The Spanish parliament mooted the idea of keeping Alqueria permanently filled with artificial snow diverted from the Sierra Nevada but a corrupt politician had already sold it to The House of Lords to pack codpieces. The snow didn’t linger long however, by next morning it was gone. The general feeling is that it became depressed by the ambiance of Alqueria and by same strange mechanism elevated its own temperature and melted. Loco Paco spent the rest of the day looking for it, he felt sure it was a case of theft and notified the authorities.
STRANGE DAY
We had a piece of paper for our appointment at the Bola Azul Hospital in Almería. I like having a piece of paper; it gives me something tangible to wave in front of Nursie as she exits the consulting rooms to brave the melee of waiting patients. It justifies my appearance in her hallowed presence - A phone appointment has no physical proof of its existence, and this makes me insecure and anxious. Bola Azul heaves from wall to wall with those in need; Quiet is impossible, and seats are at a premium. Yet as we exited the lift we were aware of a resounding silence. We entered the waiting room, which would have made the Marie Celeste seem overcrowded. We stood alone in this echoing, empty chamber – we must have got the appointment wrong. I fished out the magic paper, and there it was – black on grey. We were in the right place, on the right day and at the right time – where was the usual tumultuous multitude? I heard laughter, homed in on it and found a *comfort of nurses enjoying a rare sit-down. I waved my document of authority before them, and before our backsides could contact any of the many available free seats we were whisked straight in to see the Consulta. We were out before we should have been in – but where was everybody else? We were pondering this on the way back along the motorway when our thoughts were distracted by an oncoming *camel. We watched in amazement as a truck passed by on the other side of the central barrier with a chesnut camel, complete with golden saddle,

seated on its roof. Barely had we recovered from the chesnut camel when along came a white camel, also seated, but with a bright blue saddle. Then the penny dropped – Melchior and Balthazar had decided to return to their homeland by a quicker and more comfortable means of transport! Casper, presumably, is still trotting back to Arabia on his horse – no horse came by on a truck roof! As we left the motorway and slowed for the roundabout we felt a gentle but perceptible thump! Henry got his backside bumped - by an Alfa Romeo! I got out to view the damage, my sword of righteousness ready in my hand. ‘I am sorry, it is my fault.’ Insisted the very penitent young Spanish Alfa Romeo driver. ‘No damage, no problem.’ I answered, sheathing my sword. The soft answer does indeed turn away wrath! All in all, a very Strange Day! *Comfort is possibly the collective name for a gathering of nurses – or if not, then it should be! *Not a real one!
‘Airbnb for refugees’ group overwhelmed by offers of help
A German group which matchmakes citizens willing to share their homes with refugees said it had been overwhelmed by offers of support, with plans in the works for similar schemes in other European countries. The Berlin-based Refugees Welcome, which has been described as an “Airbnb for refugees”, has helped people fleeing from Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia and
Syria. More than 780 Germans have signed up to the Refugees Welcome website and 26 people have been placed in private homes so far. Two of the site’s founders, Jonas Kakoschke, 31, and Mareike Geiling, 28, live with 39-year-old Bakari, a refugee from Mali, whom they are helping with German classes while he waits for a work permit. A spokesman said the project’s growing success has now led to
offers of help to set up similar schemes in other EU countries, including Greece, Portugal and the UK, with a comparable project in Austria already up and running since January. Over the weekend, thousands of Icelanders offered to accommodate Syrian refugees in their own homes in an open letter to the government about the migration crisis. Among those who have responded to
the German site have been PR consultants, carpenters and many students, spanning a large age range from 21 to 65. Most are people living in flatshares, the group said, but offers have also come from married couples and single mothers. Teacher Johann Schmidt shares his apartment in Konstanz with an Iraqi refugee, with whom he was matched after registering with the
site in November 2014. “Azad tells me about his home country time and again, and can explain the overall context of the current situation to me in simple terms,” Schmidt said. “I’ve learned quite a bit from him already and very much enjoy listening to his stories.” Accommodating a refugee does not have to mean losing out on the rent of a room, Refugees Welcome said. In a third of the cases, costs are covered either by the job centre or social welfare payments, and a quarter of the rents are paid for via microdonations to the site. “We are overwhelmed by people’s readiness to help,” the group said on Tuesday. “We are now receiving inquiries from different countries within Europe such as Greece, Portugal and Scotland, but also from Australia and the US. “Everywhere, people are keen to realise this idea in their countries
to be able to offer refugees a home.” Others have been taking refugees into their homes on their own initiative, even politicians. Martin Patzelt, an MP from chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party, temporarily housed two Eritrean refugees in his home in Brandenburg. Patzelt said he been contacted by many other Germans offering their homes too, but had also received death threats. “I didn’t want any refugees in my life, but they came. And I took the challenge,” he said. Offers of help have sometimes been too numerous for authorities to handle. On Tuesday, Munich police appealed to the public to stop bringing gifts for refugees, announcing in a tweet that they had been overwhelmed by the amount of provisions people had left, including foodstuffs and nappies.

The perfect Lemon Curd
Makes 400ml) 5 unwaxed lemons 225g white sugar 6 eggs (3 whole eggs and 3 yolks) Pinch of salt 100g butter, cubed Zest three of the lemons into a bowl with the sugar and rub together with your fingertips to release the oils, then squeeze enough of them to give 225ml juice. Whisk the eggs into the sugar followed by the lemon juice, a little at a time, until fully incorporated. Put in a heavy-based pan over a low heat and stir continuously with a rubber whisk or wooden spoon until as thick as Bird’s custard which should take about 7-8 minutes. Whisk in the salt and pour into a food processor or blender if you have one. Cool for five minutes. Start the motor and blend on a low speed for 30 seconds (alternatively, beat with a wooden spoon), then start dropping in the butter, a little at a time, still with the motor on, until smooth. Transfer to sterilised jars.

Winter walks in Greece
Some routes are made for winter walking when bitter weather sets in! This charming season lends nature unique colours. History-laden walkways next to rivers and lakes will offer you magnificent tranquil moments in the city. If crispy cold weather frightens you, put on your coat, hat and gloves and go along with us on a walk to different cities in Greece. Thessaloniki - In winter there’s is nothing better than to pay a visit to the lady of the North, Thessaloniki. It is a modern, elegant and refined city, bursting with life, and loved by the young and old. Either it is day or night a walk down Thessaloniki’s seafront promenade, called nea paralia in Greek, will definitely be compensating. Your stroll begins from the town’s renowned White Tower and ends at the Concert Hall. Walk next to the waterfront facing Thermaikos Gulf and drink in the view of Mt. Olympus, the mountain of ancient Greek myth. By the waterfront and come across the statue of Alexander the Great but don’t forget to make a stop and take a picture of the city’s landmark, the renowned art work Umbrellas by Zongolopoulos! The city’s lights by the seafront makes pedaling in the evening even more magical.

Greece all time classic
Monastiráki and Psyrrí
Athens and around
Monastiráki, to the north of Pláka, is substantially less touristy than its neighbour, though there are still plenty of sights and extensive opportunities for eating, drinking and shopping. The area gets its name from the little monastery church (monastiráki) on central Platía Monastirakíou. The square, with its handy metro station, marks a return to the traffic and bustle of commercial Athens, full of fruit stalls, street performers, lottery vendors and kiosks.
For all too many people, ATHENS is a city that happened two-and-a-half thousand years ago. It’s true that even now the past looms large – literally, in the shape of the mighty Acropolis that dominates almost every view, as well as on every visitor’s itinerary. Yet the modern city is home to over four million people – more than a third of the Greek nation’s population – and has undergone a transformation in the twenty-first century. On first acquaintance, Athens is not a beautiful place – the scramble for growth in the decades after World War II, when the population grew from around 700,000 to close to its present level, was an architectural disaster. While its economic reputation has taken a battering, Greece remains a premier-league travel destination. Its incredible historic sites span four millennia, encompassing both the legendary and the obscure. Its convoluted coastline is punctuated by superb beaches, while its mountainous interior urges you to dust off your hiking boots and explore. Yet perhaps its greatest riches are the islands, ranging from backwaters where the boat calls twice a week to resorts as cosmopolitan as any in the Mediterranean. For anyone with a cultural bone in their body Greece cannot fail to inspire. Minoans, Romans, Arabs, Latin Crusaders, Venetians, Slavs, Albanians and Turks have all left their mark, and almost every town or village has a link to the past, whether it’s a delicately crumbling temple to Aphrodite, a forbidding Venetian fort or a dusty Byzantine monastery decorated with exquisite frescoes. And let’s not forget the museums stuffed to bursting with Classical sculpture and archaeological treasures. But the call to cultural duty will never be too overwhelming on a Greek holiday. The hedonistic pleasures of languor and warmth – swimming in balmy seas at dusk, talking and drinking under the stars. – are just as appealing. Bar a few upmarket and “boutique” exceptions you may struggle to find five-star comfort – orthopaedic mattresses, faultless plumbing and cordon bleu cuisine are not the country’s strongpoint – but this isn’t really what the Greek experience is about.

Abarth 500X Price: £25,000 (Guide) On sale: Mid 2017. Fiat the Italian company looks to expand its lineup with the Fiat Arbarth 500x. It looks as though 2017 will be the year of the hot crossover, and Fiat will be one of the first makers to join the party with an Abarth version of its 500X. The styling of the test mule snapped on test in our spy shot has been
from the 1.4-litre fourcylinder turbocharged engine used in Fiat’s 124 Spider. However, power is expected to be increased to around 200bhp to help compensate for the extra weight of the larger 500X. The Abarth’s chief rival will be the Nissan Juke Nismo RS. The model is expected to be sold worldwide, but with a particular focus on the US, where one in five Fiat 500s are currently sold as Abarths.
somewhat toned down to throw people off its scent, but the beefier brakes are a giveaway that this is no ordinary Fiat 500X. The new flagship model will get the same kind of stand-out look as the Abarth 500 hot hatch, so it will be fitted with big wheels, lowered suspension and deep spoilers. There will also be a sports exhaust and plenty of scorpion badges and graphics. Power is expected to come

Fiat 500X success story It’s easy to see why a performance 500X is on the way. Nearly 10,400 examples of the standard model found homes in Europe in the first part of 2015, and with sales in the small SUV crossover sector set to grow to 1.3 million a year in Europe by 2020, performance versions will have lots of potential customers to
The 500X is available with the same 1.4 Multiair II petrol engine that’s offered in the 124 Spider, in both cases producing 138bhp. The Multiair II motor is known to be highly adaptable, and Abarth engineers have hinted that up to 170bhp will be extracted for their version of the 124 Spider. A similar amount is expected for the Abarth 500X, with drive sent to all four wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. By comparison, both the Mini
Countryman JCW and the Nissan Juke Nismo RS produce 215bhp from their respective turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engines. As with other Abarth models, the 500X is likely to receive significant interior and exterior styling upgrades, new badging and graphics and distinctive wheel designs.
aim at. That’s why Nissan is reportedly readying a Nismo version of its bestselling Qashqai crossover, powered by a tuned 1.6-litre DIG-T engine producing significantly more than the 215bhp Juke Nismo RS. Its sister car, the Renault Kadjar, is also preparing for a Renaultsport makeover.

Real Madrid Cup Shock
Tiger Woods sets his sights on Masters return in April
Celta Vigo stunned La Liga leaders Real Madrid to reach the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 2-2 draw, 4-3 on aggregate. The hosts went ahead on the stroke of half-time when away defender Danilo turned the ball into his own net. Cristiano Ronaldo got the visitors back into the tie with a brilliant freekick, before Daniel Wass drilled in a low finish for
Celta. Lucas Vazquez headed in Real’s second but it was not enough. Zinedine Zidane’s side saw their 40-match unbeaten run brought to an end by Sevilla earlier in January. They have now won just once in their past five games in all competitions.
SWIMMING POOLS POOL SURESTE SL MADE WITH “GUNITE” Tiger Woods is confident he will be in the lineup for the Masters in April as he continues his measured comeback from injury. The 14-time major winner, who returned to golf in December at the Hero World Challenge following a 15-month injury lay-off. All being well, he hopes to tee it up at Augusta

everything right, so yes, I’m looking forward to it.” After the Farmers at Torrey Pines, Woods will fly off to United Arab Emirates for the Dubai Desert
