STARS STUN AT SPAIN’S OSCARS for Best New Director. The film faced tough competition from A Monster Calls, which scooped no less than nine awards including best director gong for Juan Antonio Bayona. The fantasy drama tells the story of young boy whose nightmares become very real as he faces the impending death of his single mother. The film explores the broken relationship between a mother and daughter and their efforts to repair it after years of separation.

British expat gets UN to help fight farming scandal
A BRITISH expat has successfully enlisted the help of the UN to probe a farming scandal that is ‘killing the last desert’ in Europe. Thanks to green campaigner David Dene, the UN Office of Human Rights is investigating the alleged destruction of the ‘El Rio de Aguas’ area of Almeria due to intensive
olive tree production. Environmentalists claim the trees are rapidly depleting a precious underground aquifer, which is rapidly running dry. They insist the lack of water is already wreaking havoc on the environment and forcing whole communities to move. “Already a few
communities have been forced to move and we now have to drive 15km to the nearest spring to get our water.” Dene continued: “At the current rate, unless something is done, the aquifer will run dry in just a few years”, he said. “It’s killing the last desert in Europe.”

NEWS Spain backs early Brexit deal Spain does want to strike an early Brexit deal on expats despite Germany’s refusal to resolve the issue first, Theresa May was told by her counterpart today. In talks on the sidelines of the EU summit in Malta, Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy told Mrs May he was in favour of an quick deal on ‘reciprocal rights’. Around 300,000 Britons live full time in Spain, the largest group among one million UK nationals living on the continent. Some 2.8million EU citizens live in Britain and establishing the post-Brexit status of the expats has caused tensions.
It’s all child’s play The youngest of Zurgena will soon have a new recreation area where they can play and have fun with their friends and family with total security. Zurgena town hall has begun the construction of the new Ginés Parra Park within the recreational area that receives the same name of the Zurgenero artist. Zurgena council has exclusively faced this project with funds that will increase the areas of the municipality dedicated to recreation and greener. The execution of the works is at an advanced stage and different games have already been installed for the future enjoyment
of the children, besides the secure fencing and the installation of the pavement. The Department of Works and Services has installed rubber flooring for the safety of children, as well as small areas of artificial grass next to the trees to replace the traditional gravel that could represent risk for little ones. Among the works being carried out, there has been a levelling of the ground and last week saw the installation benches and litter bins that will accompany the slide, swings and traditional games such as hopscotch. The councillor of Works has celebrated
“the good pace of work” and that “will allow the inauguration of these facilities so that they can be enjoyed by all Zurgena neighbours who wish to visit at the beginning of February,” according to Noelia García. The mayor, Luis Diaz, understands that this project “is one more sample of the road undertaken by this local government team with the maintenance, improvement and creation of new parks, gardens and green areas, not only looking to win in services and infrastructures for our municipality, but to improve the quality of life of our neighbours in their day to day life.”

Food Rationing In UK
Supermarkets are rationing vegetables after bad weather hit crops across Europe. Lettuce, broccoli, butternut squash, aubergines and courgettes have been particularly affected by the shortage. F r u s t r a t e d c u s t o m e r s have shared photographs of empty supermarket shelves on Twitter. Meanwhile, some online shoppers have been told iceberg, romaine and sweet gem varieties of lettuce are completely out of stock. Some Tesco and Morrisons branches are limiting sales of iceberg lettuces to three per customer because of “continued weather problems in Spain”.
The vast majority of the UK’s vegetables come from the city of Murcia in south eastern Spain during the winter months. But severe flooding and freezing conditions have damaged farms across the region - causing millions of euros worth of damage and leaving the ground too soaked to grow new crops. Price rises are possible if the weather does not improve soon, and some healthy eaters have already complained that the cost of an iceberg lettuce has nearly tripled in recent weeks. Some supermarket chains have begun to buy in lettuces from US farms more than 5,300 miles away to address the shortage.

Big loss
Banco Popular has posted a larger-thanexpected 3.5 billion euros loss due to extraordinary provisions and oneoff charges to clean its balance sheet of toxic real estate assets. The country’s sixth biggest lender, regarded as the weak link of Spain’s banking sector due to its high exposure to troubled property assets, is in process of replacing Chairman Angel Ron
with Emilio Saracho. Shareholders rebelled last November as a result of his failure to clean the bank’s books. Popular had said in May its cleanup exercise could lead to losses of around 2 billion euros in 2016 and analysts had expected a loss of 2.4 billion euros due to additional charges of 229 million euros related to mis-sold mortgages and 375 million euros in restructuring costs.
Art Arrests
Spanish police arrested three people on Tuesday in connection with the theft of five paintings by the Irish-born artist Francis Bacon that were worth 25 million euros ($26.88 million), the Interior Ministry said. Police raided six homes in the Madrid region and seized a gun, ammunition, manuals to cracking safes, laser devices and oxy-fuel cylinders used to cut metal, the ministry said in a
statement. The three people were “directly connected” to the robbery and were part of a group that burgled homes across Spain, the statement said. Five other members of the gang were also arrested for a further 15 robberies. The art works, which police have not identified, have not been found since they were stolen from a home back in 2015, a ministry spokesman said.

Socialist PSOE controlled towns in the north-east have said they will leave the regional rubbish collection service after elections to the governing assembly last week saw the Partido Popular party retain control by only one vote. The move threatens the already bankrupt rubbish collection agency and could mean regular collections become less frequent and more expensive in popular expat areas.

Alcampo Is Spain’s Least Expensive Online Supermarket
Alcampo had the least expensive online prices over the last six months, according to a Spanish consumer interest association. Spain’s Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) reviewed the basket price of the country’s largest online supermarkets, and found that an Alcampo basket was 15% cheaper than those of Caprabo.com or El Corte Inglés. Prices for the selected objects, including fresh produce, packaged goods, and pharmacy, stayed stable, with a variation of 0.1%. Lentils shot up 34% in price, and the price of lettuce increased by 7%. But
citrus fruits, like limes and oranges, fell by 32% and 23%, respectively, evening out any price irregularities. Alcampo and Eroski were the two retailers who cut their costs most online in recent months, (-6% and -7%) while Mercadona (+4%) and Caprabo (+5%) raised their prices by the largest margin. Owned by France’s Groupe Auchan, Alcampo is Spain’s second largest supermarket chain. The OCU also named the chain as Spain’s least expensive brick-and-mortar food retailer for the eighth consecutive year, in November of last year.

Brexit Bad for Business
More than half of British business leaders believe the vote to leave the European Union has had a negative impact on their companies but most firms are confident they can survive the change, according to a survey on Monday. Britain's economy has performed more strongly than expected since the Brexit vote last June, but an Ipsos Mori survey of more than 100 of the country's top 500 firms found that 58 percent felt the vote to leave had taken a toll. According to the survey, more than two thirds of those questioned said they had already taken action to respond to the vote, including putting contingency plans in place and analysing the impact the different relationships Britain could have with the EU following its renegotiation. Of those taking action, 10 percent said they were moving business outside of Britain. "Our annual survey of FTSE 500 business leaders provides a unique insight into what the business world is thinking ahead of Brexit," Ipsos Mori Chief Executive Ben Page said. "Unfortunately, it looks like business in this country is already feeling the pain of the economic upheaval of leaving the EU." Britain's business leaders were some of the most vocal supporters of EU membership in the run up to the vote, arguing that access to a single market of 500 million people would enable them to grow their companies, and the economy, in the future. However the survey found a more positive response when asking about the longer term impact on business, with nearly all confident they could adapt to Brexit.

free oysters for valentine's day
They are seen as a delicacy eaten in the best restaurants by foodies - as well as would-be romantics looking for a kick-start to their love lives. But now oysters are being flogged for 25p each by a supermarket which has bought up two thirds of the UK’s stock of the seafood in anticipation of high demand ahead of Valentine’s Day. Morrisons has snapped up 200,000 oysters, all of them from Scottish farms, in advance of 14 February, when it hopes the 42 per cent of Scots who have never tried an oyster will taste the mollusc for the first time. The 25p price is more than six times cheaper than the usual
market value of £1.59 an oyster But the seafood industry warned that the move could see the image of oysters devalued. David Leiper, chairman of the Scottish Seafood Association, said: “For me oysters are a treat and a luxury. I worry that selling them like this will force them down in price long term, which is not a good thing for Scottish oyster farmers. “However, the British public do deserve a chance to taste them and there is usually very little demand in the UK.” More than half of Scottish oysters are usually sold overseas, with high demand for the product in nations including China and France. Research carried
out by Morrisons found that 58 per cent of Scots have never tasted nature’s famous aphrodisiac with 29 per cent saying they have never had the opportunity to sample the Scottish shellfish. Andrew Speight, seafood specialist at Morrisons, which is holding tastings and oyster preparation classes in store, said: “Morrisons is making this exclusive shellfish affordable, offering customers a taste of luxury for the average price of a pack of crisps. “Half of our British oysters end up being shipped abroad and we thought our customers might like more for themselves.”
Spanish mobile bank imaginBank rolls out Facebook Messenger chatbot
ImaginBank, the CaixaBank mobile-only bank, has launched the Spanish banking industry’s first ever chatbot, offering special promotions to users on Facebook Messenger.
The bot offers users an extensive discounts programme on shopping and culture across Spain, including exclusive offers for restaurants, leisure activities, travel, hotels, cultural events, training, fashion, beauty, cinema, music and shows. There are currently more than
100 offers available. Customers can directly ask the chatbot what offers are available in a given category or near a specific location, via written messages or by voice. The chatbot can also be customised to send daily or weekly notifications to the customer’s mobile device, with new offers sorted into categories. Launched in January 2016, imaginBank currently serves 90,000 customers. The bank pioneered the use of bots in the financial sector, employing these tools via Twitter to field
simple questions from users, although it says the technological limitations of the platform prevent full conversations being held. At present the Twitter bot helps clients to locate CaixaBank branches near specific places and offer upto-date information on the bank’s stock price. There is also a bot to help imaginBank clients locate their nearest ATM. CaixaBank has also developed a consultancy service in foreign trade, using
IBM Watson cognitive technology. The system has been trained to hold conversations with the bank’s specialist managers, and to help them resolve any technical questions that clients might have regarding the enormous body of trade legislature, regulations specific to certain countries, internal rules, and so on.

They confirmed the five deaths, and sent the three injured to the Santa Lucia Hospital in Cartagena. In January, Spain's Direction General of Traffic confirmed that 2016 had seen 1,160 deaths in road accidents, an increase of 29 from 2015's figures, putting an end to 13 years of declining mortality on the country's roads.

Scentyment is the result of a hobby that became a passion. After finding out how bad paraffin candles are for us and the environment, I did my research and switched to soy! Having worked for a British-based company I have now brought the product to Spain! All wax melts and candles are made from pure soy wax. The colours are natural, the scents are phthalate free (a chemical banned in children’s products!). Even the wicks I use are all natural!

New cleansers that are big trouble for makeup It should fairly be said that Hirons’ balm is remarkably similar to Clinique’s excellent Take The Day Off (£22), and the cream is a version of Clarins’ great and now bafflingly discontinued Extra-Comfort Cleansing Cream. Double Cleanse is as good as each, perhaps even better. While many balms remain thick and immobile, step one liquefies instantly, and dissolves effortlessly every scrap of heavy makeup, leaving skin clean but mercifully squeaky free. Step two – velvety and elegant – is a pleasure. Neither stings nor tingles, even when
smeared carelessly over eyes. My only gripe is the 50/50 partitioned packaging, separating equal doses of cleanser. An appealing gimmick, certainly, but inherently flawed. I’d have preferred one-third balm and two-thirds cream, so the latter could be used again in the morning on bare skin. Even if used only at night, the cream’s more fluid formula will always empty first (50ml of cream cleanser doesn’t go far) and one is left with an oversized container of balm. As someone who hates the inevitability of running down conditioner before its matching shampoo, I predict frustration.

I broadly agree, at least when wearing foundation and heavy eye makeup (I practically never use eye makeup remover: there’s no need if your cleanser’s up to the job). Hirons, a fellow cleansing zealot, has been smart to tap into this one sound idea rather than to launch a comprehensive range,
and has piggybacked on a popular existing (if sometimes inconsistent) brand, Pixi, instead of starting from scratch.

Few products have been so keenly anticipated as influential blogger Caroline Hirons’ new Double Cleanse (£24), a duo comprising a solid oil cleanser for makeup removal and a cream to cleanse the naked skin beneath. The ritual of double cleansing has become standard for many beauty enthusiasts, who take the view that a single cleanse is akin to bathing fully clothed.

Song For Marion
“I’m not the life and soul of the party and full of joy and guts. I’m miserable old Arthur. I’ve ruined everything I had and it’s too late.” Arthur Harris played by British veteran actor Terence Stamp more akin to playing the arch villain is struggling to deal with his wife, Marion’s cancer. Undoubtedly he loves her, this is never in question being her main carer but to a point of over -protectiveness stifling her natural energy. His relationship with his son James is frosty. It seems as if James has proved a disappointment and Marion’s illness has caused a huge rift between them. Arthur is bad-tempered, the antithesis of his wife, Marion played by the renowned actress Vanessa Redgrave, held in such high-esteem by the American playwright Tennessee Williams as the greatest actress of our time. Within the partnership, she is the life force whereas Arthur represses his emotions, coming across as a misery dampening his wife’s enthusiasm for wanting to compete in a musical competition. “Maybe I’m crazy” and “Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world” or “Let’s talk about sex, baby” form part of the repertoire of the OAPz-an unconventional type of choir chirpy and eccentric encouraged by a charismatic Elizabeth played by Gemma Arterton. The OAPz are precisely that-seniors wanting to sing and have fun. They rise to Elizabeth’s challenge and don the necessary attire to create a rock and roll image more ageing Mick Jagger, clad in leathers with long hairpieces, strumming invisible guitars and kicking ass. What an endearing sight. Explicit lyrics extolling the excitement of sex and game for a laugh Timothy who overdoes the jive and has to be taken in an ambulance to hospital to recover! And what about wheelchair bound Marion?
Special Offers Visit:
She is in the thick of it agreeing to sing a solo version of “True Colours” dedicated to her grumpy misunderstood husband. After her performance everyone present congratulates her on her wonderful rendition apart from the most important person in her life. Arthur slinks off for a smoke wanting to avoid the limelight, feeling dejected. It is Elizabeth who chastises him. Rightly so. “You have this wonderful woman who adores you and she just sang in front of everyone for you. She put everything she had into singing that song.” “Marion” is a change of direction from the earlier brutally realistic crime movies from writer and director Paul Andrew Williams (The Cottage, London to Brighton and Cherry Tree Lane). It is more of a tear-jerker like Brassed Off or Calendar Girls or even The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, films of that ilk. When the film was released in the US it was the “Unfinished Song” with closing lyrics provided by Celine Dion from her 2013 album “Loved Me Back to Life.” “Life is a story that’s all twists and turns/ All that matters is the lessons we learn.” Arthur has to build some very solid bridges with his son. He has to travel on a journey of self-discovery revealing his true colours and acting on Elizabeth’s advice: “Let everyone see you” instead of hiding away like a recluse locked inside his own grief. Marion gave them all the strength to carry on which culminated in Arthur’s song dedicated to her: “Goodnight my angel.” As Duke Orsino bemoaned: “If music be the food of love, play on.” Sing your heart out Arthur Harris!
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail. co.uk. I don’t know about you but there does seem to be a number of needless folders and shortcut to folders in a Windows file system. For example, “Documents and Settings” is a pointer to “Users” (both in the SAME directory, “All Users” simply point to “\Programdata” and the list goes on. My question is ‘Why have useless folders and pointers to useless folders’? What Is the “System Volume Information” Folder, and Can I Delete It? On drive’s formatted with the NTFS file system, this folder’s permissions are set to prevent everyone from accessing the folder, even users with Administrator permissions. Double-click the folder and you’ll see an error message saying the “location is not available” and “access is denied.” This is normal. That’s because Windows uses this folder for certain system-level features. The permissions are set to prevent users—and programs without the appropriate permissions— from tampering with the files inside and interfering with important system functions. So, What is if for? Among other things, Windows stores System Restore points in the System Volume Information folder. In the, very likely, event that Windows messes up and you have to return to a previous time and date,
February 2017
the information that you need has to be stored somewhere and it is stored here. You can, or course, reduce the amount of information being stored on the folder and therefore save a little bit of disk space, but with Hard Drives being a Terabyte (1000-ish Gigabytes = over 222,222 DVD disks worth of information) and larger, there doesn’t seem to be a good reason to do so! So, Can I Delete the Folder? I don’t like Microsoft anything BUT I strongly suggest that you DON’T delete the System Volume Information folder. On NTFS-formatted drives, Windows won’t normally let you access this folder, much less delete it. On exFAT or FAT32formatted drives, you can choose to delete the folder—but Windows will just recreate it in the future, since it needs it. Windows stores important system data here, and you should leave the folder alone. Don’t attempt to change the permissions on the folder to delete it. If the System Volume Information folder is using a lot of space, reduce the space allocated to System Restore in Windows. If seeing the folder bothers you, just set Windows to hide hidden files and folders. Be warned, on the occasions that I have done this, Windows has had a minor seizure trying to put ‘Right’ what I have done – You have been warned! Everything that goes in my articles is my personal opinion. How good an opinion? Read the open part of the article for my experience and qualifications and ask “How many others are there like Trev?” Hope you have a trouble free week.

Fans hit back at Super Bowl body shamers
Cruel: Most of America was watching in awe as Lady Gaga brought down the house during her epic 12-minute halftime show during the Super Bowl on Sunday - but some trolls were quick to criticise the star’s body as she took to the stage But, Gaga’s fans - branded her Little Monsters - were quick to jump to her defence, taking to Twitter to praise the singer for promoting a natural look and embracing her beauty. The support started with: ‘Gaga got that meat on da bones I love.’
Chloe Goodman shows off her physique Chloe pause for thought Looks Great!!!
I’m sure we all, at times anyway, find ourselves being concerned about the comparatively modern threat from jihadists or other extremists, who seem determined to destroy our fairly comfortable way of life, based as it is on Christian principles. But how many of us, I wonder, realise that this is in fact no new phenomenon, but one that has repeatedly manifested itself through various phases of religious intolerance over hundreds, if not thousands of years. So, at the recent tenth anniversary Service at Aljambra, which coincided with the commemoration of the conversion of St Paul, we remembered that even the worst of terrorists is not without hope. So Saul, we’re told, had set off from Jerusalem on his 150 mile trip to Damascus ‘breathing out threatenings and slaughter’ against this faith, determined to exterminate any Christians he encountered, yet arrived a few days later a completely changed man, ready to share his new-found faith with any who’d listen. What a test of Christian love and faith for a man called Ananias, who from being one of Saul’s primary targets, was now required to welcome and baptise his former enemy. Small wonder the Bible tells of his questioning if God really appreciated the danger Saul posed. Yet reassured,
Ananias obeyed, and through his incredible bravery in meeting and welcoming him, Saul became St Paul, the greatest of all Christian missionaries.
Quite a challenge, I think for all of us these days. For whilst we’re understandably concerned at the evil being perpetrated by so many modern-day terrorists and the horrors they constantly enact, yet we must never entirely write any one of them off, but pray for them as misguided instead. For none are actually worse than Saul of Tarsus. None that are beyond the love of Christ. So the question for me is whether I could be as forgiving and as ready to trust God as Ananias was. For he, utterly unknown apart from this one incident, must be one of the greatest exponents ever of Christian love. Kim’s Rage Angry: Phillip Schofield and Kim Woodburn came to blows as he quizzed her on her behaviour in the CBB house and she accused the ‘biased’ presenter of ‘having no idea what he was talking about’ When Coleen was asked if there was anything she’d like to say to Kim, Coleen smiled and said, ‘No…’ Kim
replied, ‘I feel the same way dear’... And viewers could hear Linda Robson say, ‘No one likes a sore loser love!’ When Phillip asked what she thinks when she looks back at some of the footage, Kim said, ‘I look back with sadness that it came to that and I said those things, but I’m not sorry I said them.
Wowzers! Chloe Goodman was illustrating just how she made her name as she strutted her stuff on a Tenerife holiday on Sunday, looking incredible as she went Chloe has long-tried to forge a career in TV, after a stint on EOTB’s inaugural series in 2014, before returning in last year’s fifth season, while also appearing in Celebrity Big Brother in 2015. While the brunette beauty has taken a break from TV screens, she is enjoying a bevy of holidays in her career interim - with her Tenerife break just one of many.
Sir Bradley launches acting career Sir Bradley Wiggins shunned the controversy surrounding his stint on the Channel 4 show, as he revealed his hope to launch an acting career after he was approached for a role in EastEnders. The 36-year-old Olympian cyclist spoke to Daily Star about his next career move, as he divulged that his future could lie in television. Bradley bravely decided to compete on The Jump on Sunday, despite suffering a leg injury just one day before. Bradley explained: ‘I’d like an acting role. I got asked to be in EastEnders. A lot of things like that in the past I’ve turned down because I just didn’t have time. But now I’ve got time on my hands I can do all those sorts of things.’ Channel 4 viewers instantly took to Twitter, with some expressing their disapproval, while others branded Bradley a ‘legend’ after his cheeky comment.

SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT Spain’s buoyant economy braces for bumpier 2017
Spain's factories have had a buoyant start to the year suggesting economic recovery still has some momentum, but a spike in consumer prices, a slowdown in job creation and international uncertainties paint a less rosy picture ahead. Activity in Spain's manufacturing sector grew at the fastest pace in over 18 months in January, with firms in the sector creating jobs at a rate not seen in nearly 20 years, Markit's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) survey showed on Wednesday. The spurt followed data showing Spain trouncing most of its euro zone rivals with 2016 growth: national output expanded by 3.2 percent for the second year running, cementing a threeyear turnaround from a devastating recession. The government,
O
www.soltimes.com
however, expects growth to slow to 2.5 percent this year, though that will still outperform its euro zone peers France and Germany as easy borrowing terms and continued hiring sustain household spending. Headwinds are multiplying at a time when some of the underlying imbalances including a dysfunctional labour market that relies excessively on temporary, low-skilled jobs - have yet to be fixed. Spain, the euro zone's fourth largest economy, imports most of its energy and is especially reliant on oil. With these prices on the rise and domestic electricity costs also soaring, family purse strings are likely to tighten. Inflation hit a four-year high in four years in January. Inflationary pressures within the factory sector
were also a concern within Markit's survey after input costs grew at their fastest pace in almost six years. "Spain's economy is facing a day of reckoning," Angel Talavera, senior euro zone economist at Oxford Economics, said in a note on Wednesday. "A large part of Spain's cyclical recovery is explained by the decline in oil prices." An unexpected surge in these costs would hit Spain harder than its neighbours, Talavera estimated, with growth slowing from an average 2.2 percent between 2017 and 2018 to 1.7 percent if oil prices averaged 75 euros a barrel over the period. Under that scenario euro zone growth would only fall from 1.5 percent to 1.3 percent.

A draft law currently going through the Balearic regional legislative process aims to force “large holders of property” to make them available for rent. One of the more contentious aspects of the bill is that it intends to force landlords who own ten or more empty properties to offer them for long-term rental, to help ease the housing shortage on the islands. The Insular Council of Ibiza is demanding it be reduced to five. This draft law has run into a lot of opposition from different quarters, and I’ve been asked if it might affect secondhome owners with holiday-homes in
Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. If they don’t use their properties, or do so only occasionally, might they be forced to offer them for long-term rent? The answer is no. This is what Will Besga, head of legal firm Mallorca Law, has to say about the bill: It is not yet in force, we don’t know the final text, and there will be appeals in courts. The aim of the bill is to go against banks, who have large numbers of repossessed properties Most expat or local holders are not large holders of property, and if there are any, in all likelihood they will have them as an investment and hence rented out
In two years we will have elections, and in all probability the opposition will win them, who will then proceed to repeal this, and many other laws. This draft law, called the Llei d’Habitatge (del Govern Balear) in Catalan, is not to be confused with the Balearic draft Tourism law (Llei del Turisme), which is also going through the legislative process at the moment. The Tourism bill does have implications for foreign owners of property in the Balearics, but just like the Housing bill, the final text is not yet known, and if and when it does become law, it could be repealed in a few years time.

FIVE COMMON SITUATIONS IN SPAIN THAT CAN ONLY BE RESOLVED RETROSPECTIVELY
Spanish building licences are notoriously difficult; painstakingly slow to obtain and you can never be sure if they might be rejected. Here are 5 common situations that can only be resolved using a simple Certificate of Antiquity or Retrospective Licence. ONE: Planning Laws for detached properties make garages, permanent carports, or any kind of roofed buildings that are violating the minimum required distance to the plot´s boundaries a reason to decline a license. National planning laws for detached properties require a minimum distance between a window and a neighbour’s boundary of 2 metres. Regional and local laws may allow between 3 to even 5 metres or more, there are many variables depending on different factors. A Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can previous works unobjectionable for the planning department at the Town Hall. TWO: Most glass or bricked enclosed terraces and porches are built without a proper licence. Spanish properties traditionally tend to have patios and courtyards, along with semi-opened spaces like porches and partially covered terraces to provide shelter from the sun and maximise on the outdoor lifestyle. These semi-opened spaces are physically easily closed-in, but the bureaucracy is not as easy. These works, however small you might consider them, are adding to the registered square meters of the property and often permissions are declined. A Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can make these works unobjectionable for the planning department at the Town Hall and can also be used for updating the Title Deeds. THREE: Rarely do we find a swimming pool that has been correctly declared in the property’s Title Deeds or have the correct type of license. Of the small percentage of pools that do have a license, most often than not, they’re missing the Certificate by the Architect to sign off on the completion. Nowadays a Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can be used in order to add a pool into the property’s “Escritura” Title Deeds. Those with a building licence alone is not sufficient. FOUR: Any shed, exterior built cupboard, semi-opened kitchen and other covered buildings or works such as a carport, must have a proper Major Licence “Licencia Mayor” when the interior height measures over 1.5 metres. This means the paperwork and legal fees for obtaining a licence can well exceed the cost of actually doing the building works itself. Only one Certificate of Antiquity or Retrospective Licence is enough to cover all the extensions done, on any scale. FIVE: Underbuilds with living accommodations are rarely done with the correct licences and again, these can only be added to the Title Deeds using a Retrospective Licence. A Certificate of Antiquity/Retrospective Licence is the only document that can prevent prosecution for any interior alterations done at the property or alterations that don’t meet the planning standards. In all those scenarios the document needed is a Certificate of Antiquity also known as a Retrospective Licence. Once issued, this document acts as licence, protecting the owner against possible sanctions from the Town Hall or can be highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers due to the existence of illegal extensions in the property. It will also be needed on completion of the sale in order to update the property’s description in Title Deeds & Land Registry. •In Murcia area, the condition in order to obtain a Retrospective Licence is that the building work already done is a minimum of 4 years old. •In Almeria area, the building work needs to be over 6 years old •In Alicante area, the building work needs to be over 4 years old, before the 20th August of 2014 Only building work that hasn’t been fined or objected or can use a certificate of antiquity to protect against any future fines. Only properly qualified and registered Spanish Architects are permitted to issue Retrospective Licences, so if your solicitors are studying your case, ask them to contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to provide the Antiquity Certificate and we will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper with our fixed published prices and guaranteed deadlines. The cost of an Antiquity Certificate / Retrospective Licence for pools is 190 € +IVA and extensions or complete properties only 270 € +IVA. The purpose of this article is to give you some advantages to living and working in Spain as well as the disadvantages – so you can pursue your quest to find a job in Spain with a healthy dose of reality and not with your head in the clouds. The weather and climate is much kinder than

other Northern European countries. It should be pointed out that in the winter it certainly does get cold and many regions of Spain experience snow, ice and plenty of rain. Having said that, Spain has a mild climate and the ability to often wake up to clear blue skies and warm sunshine is a blessing. Beaches. Most jobs in Spain will be located in the many popular tourist resorts up and down the coast. Typically these resorts will have wonderful sandy beaches and many bars and restaurants with great possibilities for nightlife. It does make for a very good way of life because everybody is much more relaxed and friendly. Health. The ability to be outdoors much more and perform many different sports activities is very much a massive advantage towards your health and longevity. As well as the many opportunities for exercise, the diet is also recognised as being extremely healthy and liable to add years to your life.

Cancelation of a mortgage. Question: I paid off my mortgage in Spain over 10 years ago and to my horror, when I visited the notary to sign the sale of the property, the buyer’s solicitor told me that I still have a mortgage and that we could not sign . What is going on? Answer: A mortgage is essentially two transactions wrapped up into one. It is a loan plus a charge on a property to secure it. In Spain when you finish paying off a loan you have to instruct the bank to sign the cancellation of the charge that secured it at the notary. They will do this immediately on you requesting it but it is up to you to ask for this to happen. It is also up to you or your solicitor to organise
for the deed of cancellation to be registered in the property register. Only when the deed of cancellation has been presented at the property register will the charge not appear in the property register. The registration of a cancellation deed takes approximately one month. If you do not wish to wait, talk to the buyer’s solicitor. He will normally accept to sign the cancellation deed and purchase deed the same day. He will simply ask to retain sufficient funds to pay the notary and registrar´s fee in relation to the cancellation deed (and normally a small fee to process this document) and deal with it to together with his purchase deed.

Disadvantages to Living in Spain Cost of Living in Spain 2017. Wages and salaries are much lower in Spain than in other more developed countries such
as the United Kingdom, Germany and the USA. Although your immediate reaction is probably to think that the cost of living in Spain is much lower, that is something of a myth these days.
Not only are wages low, hours are also very long because of the traditional siesta in the middle of the day. Yes that was the case in years gone by, but with the introduction of the
Euro the cost of living in Spain has increased dramatically. In fact it may not even be any cheaper whatsoever to live in Spain as compared to the United Kingdom!

Maria of Alqueria
Manuela looked Antonio Poyato straight in the eyes, jutted out her chin and let forth a heartfelt stream of abuse. Antonio staggered backwards under the force of her words, he was sure he didn’t deserve such an outburst but replied with the same venom as he received. Manuela changed tactics and instead of hurling verbal abuse hurled something more tangible in the form of a ornamental paperweight containing a not very convincing model of the Eiffel Tower. It was however sufficient to floor Poyato and render him unconscious. The rest of Alqueria were equally at each other’s throats but this was not the usual barrio rivalry, a bad moon had risen and chaos reigned. Those who were once close friends were no longer on speaking terms and hostilities between the two barrios escalated to a state of overt warfare. The situation was such that a barrier had to be built separating the two factions. Even this was fraught with disagreement and violence, so much so that neither side would cooperate in the building of the ‘wall’. The only solution was to build two walls some hundred millimetres apart but following exactly the same course. Construction was slow as flak jackets and hard hats made mobility difficult. As the stone and fist throwing was at their peak an apparition appeared in the midst of the turmoil. It was in

the form of a woman, Maria, no overly tall but very, very pretty and appealing, Antonio Poyato fell immediately in love her. Her presence seemed to reassure the wayward people of Alqueria. She assembled the entire village and spoke of compassion and fraternity, she spoke with reason and understanding and she touched the very souls of every Alquerian. Friends became friends once more and the bar La Casa Devante started admitting those from the Newcomers’ Barrio. Manuela apologised to Poyato and Loco Paco allowed little boys to take Bengy, his pet dung beetle for walks. The walls were de-assembled and a pretty pink picket fence with plenty of flowers was erected with gates ever fifty metres. A miracle had happened with peace and harmony the order of the day. People smiled and slapped one another on the back, even the evil Rodriquez gave sweets to little children and stopped trying to murder Manuela. The Village slept soundly under the new regime. Morning dawned with stones breaking the freshly repaired windows, Manuela once more stalked Poyato with sharpened machete and the picket fence was trampled underfoot by energetic rioters. Maria had to return to Madrid on domestic business. She never returned to Alqueria nor did peace and harmony which was never mentioned again.

Power
The sun was just beginning to yawn and look at its watch ready for leaving the sky and going to bed for the night when we returned home to a powerless house. Acting on previous experience I beat a path immediately to the fuse box, but all the little handles were in the correct positions – So now what? Again acting on previous experience I rang Tall Andy the Electrician. He had barely answered when the signal disappeared - The geography of Limaria disapproves of mobile phones, and will only provide a signal when all the stars are in alignment, which they weren’t! I moved a few yards and tried again. ‘You’ve got no credit’, gloated the phone. ‘Can’t help’. It added with indifference before turning black. I tried on Pete’s little old stupid phone, which is much less temperamental. ‘You’ve got no credit.’ It stated flatly, and went black. I could try the satellite phone– if only we had electricity! Then Barbara appeared in our garden. ‘We’ve got no power, may I borrow your phone?’ I queried anxiously. Barbara’s phone was a bit more specific. ‘You’ve got enough credit for one minute.’ It warned. A minute was enough. Tall Andy issued instructions. ‘Look in the box outside, push the button, and call me back if it still doesn’t come on.’ ‘I can’t. We’ve got no credit.’ With that Barbara’s phone gasped its last. We surveyed the impenetrable box – we had no key. Enter Stephen

clutching some long nosed pliers. With a combination of tact and digital strength he mastered the door, and we pushed the button. Nothing! As eventide advanced I set out to find candles and the Camping Gaz – we would survive; we had candles, the fire was laid, and we could cook a supper, as long as we were not expecting a full roast or guests. Malcolm then joined the party, bearing a thermos of hot water. ‘Have you pushed the button?’ He enquired. He departed down the drive to push the button again. At the same moment Pete discovered another button as yet un-pushed in the fuse box. He pushed the button at the same moment as Malcolm pushed the other button – and there was light! Tall Andy, despite our telephonic silence, used his initiative and appeared on the scene. Collectively none of us have any idea why the power went, but now that we have it back we have put it down to ‘Just One of Those Things!’

28Great Food & Drink
In Hanoi the best coffee comes with egg yolk
How do you take your coffee? With a little egg, butter and cheese? In the Vietnamese capital, that’s how it’s served at the famous Giang Cafe. On one of the endlessly busy streets in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, tourists and locals alike can be seen searching for the almost-hidden cafe down a narrow alley where the original cà phê trúng (egg coffee) can be found. On the menu is an array of drinks but all anyone is ordering is this beverage, in hot or cold versions. The hot one, served with the cup sitting in a small dish of hot water to maintain its temperature, is almost too thick to drink, so I use a small spoon. It doesn’t taste of egg – more like vanilla – and while I can taste the coffee at the bottom of the cup, the egg part is surprisingly light-tasting and not at all sickly, though certainly sweet. The cold option, laden with ice, is more of a dessert and tastes like coffee ice-cream. At the counter, collecting payment, sits Nguyen Van Dao, whose father invented the drink in 1946 while working as a bartender at the city’s Sofitel Legend Metropole hotel. At the time, milk was scarce in Vietnam so whisked egg yolk was used as a replacement. Other Hanoi cafes have attempted to imitate the drink.

www.soltimes.com Sliders, mini-burgers, mini-sandwiches: what’s the beef (even if there is no beef)? I know, I know: I’m calling something a slider when it’s not, officially, a slider. To be honest, I hadn’t heard of the term until very recently, when I started thinking about what to call today’s little rolls, so I’m claiming no authority on the matter. “Mini-burgers”, however, was never an option, because the word burger will, to me, always mean meat. “Mini-sandwiches” also didn’t work, being too dainty-sounding for what I was trying to name. The term slider has, in fact, been around for a fair old while, and was coined in 1920s Wichita, Kansas, when a restaurant chain called White Castle opened its first shop selling five cent mini-burgers. At the time, public trust in ground beef was very low, following the publication of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, which exposed the poor sanitation standards of the meatpacking industry, and White Castle’s idea of selling one- or twobite mini-burgers for a few cents was a clever way of luring customers
back. The gamble paid off, and how: public faith in ground beef was soon restored. The humble slider has been credited with kick-starting the US’s obsession with burgers ever since. Fish Slider 600g white fish fillets (halibut or pollock, for instance), skinned and cut into 8 equal 75g pieces 1½ tsp ground cumin 2 tsp coriander seeds, lightly crushed 1 tsp sweet paprika 3 tbsp olive oil 40g mayonnaise 1 tsp tarragon leaves, finely chopped 1 tsp chives, finely chopped Salt and pepper 8 sweet potato rolls (see first recipe), or another similarly light bun 2 beef tomatoes, cut into 8 even 1cm-thick discs 80g iceberg lettuce, torn into big pieces 80g good-quality tomato ketchup Put the fish, cumin, coriander, paprika and a tablespoon of olive oil in a bowl and mix to combine. Cover with cling-film and refrigerate for at least an hour. Before cooking the fish, get all the other ingredients ready.
Taste of Catalan countryside day trip
Treat Yourself
One of the new culinary experiences for 2017 from Devour Barcelona is a day trip out of the city for seasonal food festivities in the village of Alella. After visiting a Catalan bodega to sample local wines, guests indulge in the key event: an
alfresco feast consisting of calçotada – that’s fire-grilled spring onions dipped in romesco sauce – followed by a main course of grilled meat. Calçotadas are a regional winter food tradition “rooted in friendships and families”.
Mix together the mayonnaise, tarragon and chives, and set aside. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan on a high flame. Once hot, lay in half the fish fillets, sprinkle over an eighth of a teaspoon of salt, and sear for a minute or two on each side, until cooked. Remove and set aside, heat the last tablespoon of oil in the pan and cook the remaining four fish fillets. (You could, of course, cook all the fish at the same time in two pans.) Cut each sweet potato roll in half horizontally, and spread the base of each with a little mayonnaise. Lay a slice of tomato on top and season with a pinch each of salt and pepper. Put some lettuce on top and then a piece of fish. Finish with a good squirt of ketchup, pop on the lid, and serve. A true slider, made the White Castle way, is not just a small hamburger: it’s a very thin slip of beef, 5cm square, steam-grilled on a bed of onions with a pickle, which is then all piled on top of a patty. As for why it’s called a slider, it’s because of the way it slides across the griddle when steamed.

Gun salute marks Queen’s 65 years on British throne
Queen Elizabeth, the world’s longest-reigning living monarch, celebrated her Sapphire Jubilee on Monday as Britain commemorated 65 years since she ascended the British throne.
marking becoming the first monarch to reign for 65 years with any special celebration, but instead getting on with the job to which she has dedicated her life.”
Elizabeth became queen aged 25 on Feb. 6, 1952, following the death of her father George VI, the 40th monarch in a royal line that traces its origin back to Norman King William the Conqueror who claimed the throne in 1066.
The 90-year-old monarch, who became Britain’s longest-reigning sovereign in 2015, did not publicly mark the occasion herself, but a 41-gun royal salute was fired in a central London park to honour the landmark. “Today’s Sapphire Jubilee marks yet another remarkable milestone for our remarkable queen,” Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement.
When she overtook her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria’s record 63 years on the throne, she remarked it was not something to which she had ever aspired, and Buckingham Palace said she would spend
“It is a testament to her selfless devotion to the nation that she is not

Monday at her residence in Sandringham, eastern England, as was usual.
However, the queen’s office released a 2014 portrait showing her wearing a suite of sapphire jewellery she received from her father as a wedding gift in 1947. Elizabeth has cut back on international tours but still regularly performs official duties around Britain and remains hugely popular with Britons with an approval rating of about 80 percent. In December she said she would reduce the number of her patronages, passing on her role at dozens of charities, academic institutions and sporting groups to other members of the royal family.

Shadi is still home alone at the Dog House and, it is with regret, we have to finally close the gate there at the end of January. This means we desperately need to find a home for Shadi, even a foster home; He needs a home where, perhaps he is the only dog and can have lots of love and attention.

Time to visit New Zealand The north of New Zealand is subtropical whilst the south is temperate. The warmest months are December, January and February, and the coldest June, July and August. The weather in New Zealand can change unexpectedly as cold fronts or tropical cyclones quickly blow in. Because of this, you should be prepared for sudden changes in weather and temperature, particularly if doing outdoor activities. New Zealand North Island Highlights Visit a geothermal wonderland with bubbling sulphur pools and erupting geysers at Wai-O-Tapu in the Rotorua, Taupo & Central Region. Search for dolphins and whales cruising the beautiful Bay of Islands & Coromandel. Witness incredible views on the Tongariro Crossing, repeatedly voted one of the world’s Top 10 one-day treks. Take a campervan trip from Auckland to Wellington, stopping wherever and whenever the mood takes you. Treat yourself to a escorted coach tour, small group tour, with independent itineraries and day trips. Get the most out of this beautiful destination, whether you’re taking your time to fully explore a specific region or discovering New Zealand’s iconic sights around the country.

Guide
Discover an unspoilt fantasy land
Hit the open road
Good to know
Discover spectacular scenery and charming towns as you drive along New Zealand’s open roads, traversing beautiful coastline, lush forest and majestic mountains. Motorhome holidays are ideal for families wishing to explore the country independently, at their own pace and with the flexibility to travel where and when the mood takes them. A self-drive tour is the ideal way to discover the unique wonders of this awe-inspiring country.
There is perhaps nowhere in the world more enchanting, nor more naturally beautiful, than New Zealand. From the dramatic mountains and forested valleys to the majestic ice floes and glacial lakes and from dormant volcanoes to rolling vineyards, your camera has never been so busy. You may even recognise some of it from the Chronicles of Narnia as well as doubling as Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings. On first acquaintance, Athens is not a beautiful place – the scramble for growth in the decades after World War II, when the population grew from around 700,000 to close to its present level, was an architectural disaster. While its economic reputation has taken a battering, Greece remains a premier-league travel destination. Its incredible historic sites span four millennia, encompassing both the legendary and the obscure. Discover enchanting landscapes and unspoilt natural beauty with our family holidays to New Zealand From the secluded sandy bays, sub-tropical forest and geothermal wonders of the north to the spectacular sounds, magnificent glaciers and snow-capped mountains of the south, New Zealand boasts an abundance of mesmerising and diverse landscapes. Children will delight in discovering the magical backdrops for the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and the Chronicles of Narnia films whilst the whole family will be spellbound by this enchanting country’s astounding natural beauty, incredible wildlife and exhilarating adventure activities. New Zealand’s sweeping landscapes provide a stunning setting for a plethora of fun activities and adrenalin-pumping adventure sports. Whether you are happiest horse-trekking through the forest, hiking up a mountain and exploring fairy-tale caves or you prefer the thrill of white-water rafting, bungee-jumping and sky-diving, New Zealand will inspire you. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy together from skiing and kayaking to luging and zorbing.

The Algarve
LETS Travel
Florence’s museums, palaces, and churches house some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. The most popular and important sites in Florence include the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Uffizi, the Bargello, and the Accademia. The churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce are veritable art galleries, and the library of San Lorenzo is a magnificent exhibition of Michelangelo’s architectural genius. Wander some of the oldest streets in the city until you reach the Arno River, cross the Ponte Vecchio, and experience the “newest” area of Florence, the Oltrarno. Florence and its magnificent treasures await your visit!
The Algarve is a famous holiday destination popular with those seeking bucket loads of sunshine and award winning beaches, families, sports enthusiasts, nature lovers, even celebrities! If you have already been to the Algarve, then you know how much our small south coast region of Portugal has to offer. So what makes the Algarve such a great place? For the hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers from around the world that fly into Faro Airport or drive or sail from other parts of Europe each year, it’s the promise of sundrenched days at the beach, sharing in a lovely relaxed and welcoming family-orientated culture and endless options for dining out and things to do, for all ages. Algarve Holidays have long been thought of as great family holidays and beach holidays and the region has deservedly earned a reputation for golf holidays too.

professional football. The 38-year-old, who left New York City at
the end of last year, has decided to “begin the next chapter” after a 21-year career despite offers of a contract from Premier League clubs. Real Madrid are lining up an €80million summer swoop for Sergio Aguero. The Manchester City striker’s future is in doubt after he said he’ll wait and see what the club wants to do with him when the season is up. Chelsea are still interested in Alvaro Morata and could make a move for the Spaniard if Real Madrid buy a striker in the summer. Meanwhile, Karim Benzema has decided he wants to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season.
Barcelona 3 Athletic Bilbao 0
Gap Closed
Neymar & Messi Celebrate Barcelona closed the gap on La Liga leaders Real Madrid to just one point thanks to a 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at the Camp Nou. Paco Alcacer, Lionel Messi and Aleix Vidal were all on target as Luis Enrique’s side sealed what was eventually a comfortable win, but they had to survive a few early scares along the way. Barcelona now sit second in the table trailing Madrid by a solitary point, although their rivals have two games in hand.
