BREXIT RIGHTS WORRIES

FOUR out of five expats are afraid of losing their right to reside after Brexit. Some 83% of expats living in the EU are ‘very concerned’ about the impact Brexit could have on their rights and benefits as an EU citizen, a new survey has revealed. Of the 5000 expats that

responded to the survey, almost a quarter live in Spain. Conducted by the Brussels and Europe Liberal Democrats, the survey found that the right to reside, automatic pension increases and S1 healthcare worries were the top concerns for expats living in Spain.

SPAIN has been ranked the second-best country in the world for first-time buyers. A report by UK relocation service MoveHub analysed 33 countries by comparing property prices for 2016 with average salaries to determine the best countries for firsttime buyers. The United Arab Emirates topped the list thanks to an almost 8% drop in property prices last year.

Spain saw a 2.2% increase in salaries against a 5.75% drop in property prices, putting in second place, followed by Greece, Singapore and Switzerland. “Countries with the highest salary growth enjoyed more affordable property prices or even prices in decline, making them the best places for first-time buyers,” said MoveHub in a statement this week.

Zinedine Zidane hailed Gareth Bale as a ‘special player’ after the Wales forward marked his return from a three-month injury lay-off with a well-taken finish to seal Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Espanyol at the Bernabeu. Bale had been sidelined since the Champions’ League group match at Sporting Lisbon on November 22 after needing surgery on tendon damage in his ankle.

NEWS Spain Terror Raid

A woman was detained after a raid at her house in Alicante. Police say that Dolores Hidalgo, a 36 year old Spaniard, was arrested because of her links to the terrorist organisation DAESH as she attempted to move to Syria or Iraq where she was to join the organisation with her four children. The woman, who was thought to be from Murcia, tried to travel with her 4 children in 2014 to the Syrian-Iraqi zone, where her husband is said to have died in the conflict.

Parliament must be empowered to block an ‘unpatriotic Brexit’, Remain critics have demanded as the historic Article 50 Bill arrives in the Lords. Dozens of senior figures including a major Tory donor, business leaders, academics and lawyers have urged peers to write a meaningful vote on the final Brexit deal into laws on triggering the start of official talks. The plea comes as the legislation finally arrives in the Lords today for its first debate. A record breaking 190 peers have entered the marathon two-day debate. Brexit supporters have dismissed the amendment as unnecessarily tying the Government’s hands as it prepares for the tense two year negotiation.

Twins at 64!!!

A 64-year-old woman has successfully given birth to healthy twins – a boy and a girl – in Burgos, northern Spain. The Recoletas Hospital delivered the twins by Caesarean section, the usual method in such rare cases. The unnamed woman had undergone fertility treatment in the US, Spanish media report. The hospital has posted a video clip of the Caesarean delivery, according to the BBC. In 2012 the woman gave birth to a girl, who was later taken into care by social services,

amid welfare concerns, the BBC explained. Social workers said the girl was being brought up isolated, poorly clothed and with bad personal hygiene, the Spanish daily El Pais reported. No decision has been taken yet about the mother’s twins. They and the mother are reported to be in good health in hospital. The boy weighs 2.4kg (5.3 pounds) and the girl 2.2kg (4.8 pounds). The delivery went without complications.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) grew in January by 3% in yearon-year terms, 1.4 points higher than in December 2016, according to figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE). This coincides with the advance figure announced by the INE at the end of last month. This acceleration is mainly due to the evolution of energy product prices and, in particular, motor and heating fuel prices. In month-on-month terms, the general CPI fell by 0.5% in January, compared with a 1.9%

fall in the same month of 2016. Energy product prices increased in January by 17.5% year-on-year, following a 5.3% rise posted in December. This is mainly due to the increase in electricity prices, which rose from 3.7% year-on-year in December to 26.2% in January, as well as the performance of motor and heating fuels, where prices grew from 6% to 13.9%, mainly due to the base effect derived from the sharp fall back in January 2016. Food price inflation

in January stood at 1.1%, which was three tenths higher than in December, which was due to an acceleration of unprocessed food prices. As well as a slight increase in processed food prices, drinks and tobacco, by one tenth to 0.3% year-on-year. A element of the rise in nonprocessed food prices is the increase of more than 10 points in the rate of growth of pulses and fresh vegetable prices to 17.9%.

The Alquerian Table

As the people of Alqueria are unique so is its cuisine. The climatic conditions, singular soil type and strange consistency of the water in the Río Verde combine to produce the most unusual foodstuffs in all Spain. Alquerian cuisine is based around Remitroot, local truffles and the freshwater fish from the Río Verde. The term freshwater is used advisedly.

Fermented Remitroot berries and Río Verde water provide the basis for the local wine. Antonio Poyato, who brews the wine applied for Denominación de Origen certification, however the regulatory body returned his sample with a note simply saying ‘Not bloody likely’. Distilled Remitroot has recently attracted the attention of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission. Alqueria Pudding is a traditional meal enjoyed on festive occasions particularly weddings. The basis is again Remitroot, but pulped into a dough. Not unlike suet, the puddings can contain a variety of fillings. Because the dough is an aggressive aphrodisiac, very few are completely consumed. It is advisable to check with one’s doctor before eating one. It might also be polite to check with one’s partner. Alquerian Truffles may not be as sought after as the Motovun Forest variety but they are distinctive. Black with variable blue markings they have a pungent aroma slightly reminiscent of the drainage problems associated with Egyptian port

towns. A top French chef described them as having the consistency of Balsa Wood and the taste of hydrocortisone skin cream. Highly trained Mongolian Gerbils locate the delicacy on the southern slopes of the Sierra Alhamilla beneath fallen and rotting foliage.

The Río Verde begins life as a sparkling stream high in the Sierra. By the time it flows past Alqueria it is a slow moving malodorous green watery stew containing only the most resilient of life. Strange catfish and freshwater Lampreys lurk in its murky depths the only edible fish is the Alquerian Trout. Considered a separate species owing to its survival in the River, a task few other Salmoninae varieties have managed. Distinguished from other trout by large dilated eyes and a confused expression they need careful preparation. Nestor Clacketo ate one only partially cooked and it had the most terrible side-effects. He was in such a state of mental disorientation he entered and was welcomed into politics. A Sturgeon reputedly caught in the Río Verde is on display over the bar of La Casa Devante. It is in fact a rather badly preserved pike. The cardboard spines stapled to its back and markings fashioned with a black felttip pen fool few. Alqueria’s food and drink are perhaps only for the educated palate, acquired tastes, not for the faint hearted. If one is tempted to enjoy a repast of local delicacies, an open mind and good medical insurance are recommended.

Tch!

Greater fleas have lesser fleas Upon their backs to bite ’em Lesser fleas have little fleas And so ad infinitum! Or, to put it another way; there’s always a niggle somewhere! Even if you were to find yourself in a perfect hedonistic paradise, reclining on the most comfortable lounger in the world, not too hot, not too cold, a minion at the ready to replenish your glass and peel you another grape, you know it won’t last – sooner or later you are going to have to get up to pee! On the whole I think I am a fairly placid person, but there are a few things that I would class as ‘niggles.’ Our house is small and tiled, and is as easy to care for as can be desired - which is just as well, as I’m not an ardent fan of extreme housework. It has to be done, but it is a chore, not a pleasure. In particular, I resent cleaning the bath. We virtually never use the bath - the shower is so much easier and quicker – so why does it need dusting on an almost daily basis? And why is there always a dead fly in it? Whilst still on the cleaning theme I consider it unreasonable that it takes longer to move the furniture than to actually sweep or vacuum the floor. Why can’t detritus stay where it falls, instead to hiding under the chairs, table, or whatever object is near to hand? By the time I’ve moved all the chairs, etc, and then replaced them I could have

swept the whole of the Alhambra Palace! Then there’s Dirty Rain! Rain is supposed to wash things clean, not cover every surface in a red mud. Our rain seems to be at least 10% red earth, and has an extra clogging factor. It clings resolutely to everything, and refuses be shifted – It takes 2 goes with a cloth to get rid of the orangey hue – wiping down is a job that should be achievable in one pass; I object to having to do the whole lot twice! However, what I mainly object to is having to wash the clothes line – having to wash something that is designed to hold washing seems perverse to me! Then there is the Mystery of the Washing Up Cloth – If the washing up is clean, and is wiped dry with a cloth, how can that cloth ever get dirty? It only comes into contact with clean things!

Viva España!

www.soltimes.com

These were the dramatic scenes as hundreds of bloodied and emotional African immigrants exploded with joy after storming a border fence to reach Spain. The men shouted: ‘Viva España’, ‘We Love You España’ and ‘Boza, boza’ - ‘Victory, victory’ as they beat their chests in a show of joy at making it to Europe. Many were bare chested and barefoot - and others were bleeding from deep cuts they had suffered after managing to reach Spain’s north African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. Local authorities said they believed around 900 immigrants had attempted to storm the fence - and more than 400 had managed to cross it. It was not clear today how the centre - known as a CETI where the immigrants are given three meals a day, Spanish lessons and psychological support and stay for months at a time before being transferred

to the mainland to relieve the pressure on living conditions - would cope. In December, local governors ended up having to house the immigrants in army tents they mounted in a municipal equestrian centre car park after more than 400 undocumented Africans stormed the

border fence. The tents were taken down just before the New Year after 74 men and five women were transferred to different parts of the Spanish mainland. At the time Ceuta’s CETI was said to be housing 948 people, nearly double the 512 it was built to accommodate.

Albox was a prosperous place until in the 15th century it was conquered by the Christians, disappearing into oblivion until in the year 1500 it suffered a great earthquake that destroyed most of the village, so they dismantled the existing castle to repair the damaged houses. After the conquest by the catholic kings many moors that wanted to stay were forced to convert to Christianity, although they were always treated as second-class citizens all around Andalusia, reason for which they revolted against the established power and ended up being expelled from Albox and other provinces. Albox was repopulated with Christians brought down from Valencia and La Mancha, it’s interior location away from the coast, helped to avoid the constant pirate attacks which was why its growth wasn’t influenced by external factors. The beginnings of the 19th century were especially important for Albox, who achieved economically thanks to its weaving looms and to the craftsmanship’s industry. Albox’s population has maintained stable since the year 1900, between 10.000 and 11.000 inhabitants.

If you are serious about buying a property in Spain, and need or want to take advantage of financing, you should start arranging your Spanish mortgage almost before you do anything else. Leaving the financial side of your Spanish property purchase until the end does you no favours at all. If you leave it too late, and have to arrange your Spanish mortgage in a rush and under pressure, it is likely that you will end up with

an expensive and inflexible loan. And never forget that mortgage terms often run for many years, so you may have to live with the consequences of you decision for years to come. Having trouble sleeping? Go camping!!!

As an antidote to one of the ills of modern life, it may leave some quite cold. When the lure of the TV or fiddling on the phone keeps you up late at night, it is time to grab the tent and go camping.

The advice from scientists in the US follows a field study that found people fell asleep about two hours earlier than usual when they were denied access to their gadgets and electrical lighting and packed

into the night. A spell outdoors, the researchers conclude, could be just the thing for victims of social jetlag who find themselves yawning all day long. “Our modern environment has

off to the mountains with a tent. A weekend in the wilds of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado helped reset people’s internal clocks and reversed the tendency of artificial light to push bedtime late

really changed the timing of our internal clocks, but also the timing of when we sleep relative to our clock,” said Kenneth Wright, director of the sleep and chronobiology lab at the University of

13

Colorado in Boulder. “A weekend camping trip can reset the body clock really really rapidly.” “This should inspire people to look at all of the environmental factors that affect sleep “.

The Witness For The Prosecution by Agatha Christie

“I’m like a man caught in a net-the meshes of it all round me, entangling me whichever way I turn.” The story was first published in the USA as “Traitor Hands” in 1925 and contains the original ending which was subsequently rewritten by the author herself for the play version and much more dramatic. Billy Wilder’s 1957 film version starred Laughton, Power and Dietrich which was a huge success followed by the more recent Sarah Phelps’ t.v. drama (December 2016) following on from her success the previous year of “And Then There Were None.” Sexed-up and given a modern outlook which didn’t go down well with some Christie die-hards because of a number of liberties taken with the original and which contains a very different and unsatisfactory ending to Christie’s. Mayherne was a small man, neatly dressed, shrewd with a reputation which stood very high as a solicitor. His client, Leonard Vole had been arrested for the wilful murder of a rich spinster, Miss Emily French. Mayherne knew his client was in great danger of being found guilty and hung. Initially, the solicitor thought his client guilty but over time and numerous interviews, Vole’s naivety seems to emerge and Mayherne’s opinion wavers. Vole met French quite by accident when she was crossing Oxford Street and struggling with a number of parcels. He offered assistance, simply just a common act of courtesy. He met up with her later that evening at a friend’s party and it was French that initiated a friendship of a sort considering the age difference, inviting him to her home in Cricklewood. He thought it churlish to refuse, certainly when he realised she was a lady of means and that she took “sudden violent fancies to people.” Subsequent meetings were significant and coincided with a run in of infernal bad luck

Special Offers Visit:

for Vole. He did admit that he enjoyed being mothered and pampered. He described himself as a drifter: I’m one of those people who can’t say no.” Before long Vole was asked to look into her business affairs which had flattered his ego. The difficulty for Mayherne was how to prove that his client didn’t have a motive for the killing. “He saw Miss French, infatuated with the good-looking young man, hunting about for pretexts that should bring him to her house.” Incidentally, Janet Mackenzie, her maid declared that her mistress was a good woman of business, transacting her own affairs without needing any assistance. Her bankers gave a similar testimony. The bombshell hits with the revelation that Miss French had left a will in which Vole was the principal beneficiary. Further complications. Vole had been with her the night she was murdered and needs an alibi which is where Romaine Vole/Heilger comes in. Would the testimony of a devoted wife gain credence? If she is going to be a witness for the defence she needed to confirm Vole’s story of being at home when the murder was supposed to have been committed. Mayherne describes her as a strange woman who made him feel uneasy. She was too calm and composed when she should perhaps have been agitated and anxious. Her vehemence is shown when she tells the solicitor how much she hates Vole. “I hate him. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him. I would like to see him hanged by the neck till he is dead.” Everything hangs by a thread. How can Mayherne convince the court and jury that his client is innocent if his wife wants him dead? A difficult one. It’s worth reading it first before looking at the t.v. version available from the BBC and Amazon or the earlier film version. Publisher: Harper Collins …ISBN: 978-0008201-258 there is a paperback TV tie-in edition available.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 39 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail. co.uk. Having re-read a number of article it occurred to me that I seem to offer advice on PC’s and Windows environments. So today I am talking about hunting down hardware issues on the Mac family of computers using programs that come with, but not part of, your operating system. Most problems that you get are software related (a file might be corrupted and not doing what is was originally designed to do). In which case your best bet might be to just reinstall your macOS. If that fails, though, the problem could be hardware-related. Happily, Apple offers tools outside the operating system that can scan your computer and diagnose hardware problems. If your Mac is acting up, and you can’t find a software solution, these tools make troubleshooting a lot easier. Intel Macs built before June 2013 offer a program called the Apple Hardware Test; Macs built since then offer Apple Diagnostics. The two tools serve basically the same function, testing hardware and reporting back any problems. They’re also triggered by the same keyboard shortcut, so you don’t need to look up when your Mac was made to use one tool or the other. To get started, shut your Mac down. Ideally you should unplug any external hardware, like USB hard drives or

Ethernet connections. Next, turn your Mac on, holding down the “D” key. Depending on when your Mac was made, one of two things will happen. 1. You will see a logo as the test program starts. From hear you will click on the tab marked ‘Hardware Testing’ and then there is a button marked ‘Test’. Nothing of any great challenge there then! At the end you hill have a list of error codes that you will have to look up (via ‘Google’ or similar search engine) before knowing what to do next. If your Mac was made after December 2013, your Mac will load Apple Diagnostics. This tool is functionally similar to Apple Hardware Test, but instead of the retro macOS look, it feels like you never quite left the boot screen. You might be asked to pick a language, or the test might start immediately. The test might take a while, especially if you’ve got a lot of memory installed. When it’s done, you’ll get a list of potential hardware problems. Unlike the Apple Hardware Test, Apple Diagnostics gives you a plain language explanation of your problems and from the test results I’ve seen these explanations are pretty clear! As said earlier, this tool will let you know about any hardware problems your Mac has, but won’t actually fix them. Exact repair tips are way outside the scope of this article, because there are thousands of things that might be broken, but if your Mac is still under warranty or AppleCare, you can write the codes down and share them with a technician at the Apple Store. If your Mac is out of warranty, however, you need to look into repair options on your own.

And never forget that mortgage terms often run for many years,

so you may have to live with the consequences of you decision for years to come. The advantages of arranging your Spanish mortgage at the start of your property search are as follows: It costs you nothing to start early Forward planning helps you clarify the advantages and disadvantages of taking out a mortgage in Spain and make the best decision as to how much, if at all, to borrow Arranging your Spanish mortgage in good time allows you to find the mortgage in Spain that best suits your

A modern multifunctional gallery building with 44 apartments, comfortable and protected private community areas and various Club services for the 50+ generation at Costa de Levante, Almeria, in Turre near Mojacar, just 8 - 10 min from coastal villages with charming beaches. The NEW 50+ Generation Club Lifestyle model is being carried out for the first time in an Apartment Gallery building at the Costa de Almeria in the South of Spain, providing a modern community lifestyle. This complex is designed for people who like to live independently in their private homes, but at the same time close together in harmonic neighbourhood-friendship, sharing group facilities like safety, comfort and lifestyle services and occasionally exchanging mutual help when needed. The ESPADEVIDA gallery home includes co-housing elements, but now for the first time in Spain - as part of the new ESPADEVIDA concept - it includes a special establishment meeting place, the “Club Forum, to involve people from the region and from all over Europe. This new type of Real Estate opens a door to a healthy future lifestyle and involves people right from the beginning in the community-Club and Club service establishment process via a specially prepared Club Forum where they can meet their future neighbours along the way. It can provide a home for people who are several years before retirement age, around 50 or upwards who are coming into early retirement or who are already enjoying retirement. Due to the involvement of local retirement and health care specialists, the ESPADEVIDA concept includes lifestyle comfort services in earlier years, and when required later on, long term care for a resident.

Banco Popular offering zero deposit mortgages In a bid to shift repossessed new build apartments, Spanish lender Banco Popular is offering a zero-deposit mortgage that also gives “cashback” to buyers up to 13pc of the property’s value. In other words, a mortgage of up to 113pc of the property price. Properties are available across the country. An apartment complex in Costa del Sol, for example, is being sold off piecemeal, including a £68,000 two-bedroom flat and £172,000 four‑bedroom penthouse. The 113pc loanto-value mortgage therefore reportedly lends an extra £22,360 on the four-bedroom penthouse without asking for a penny in equity. The mortgage tracks European

interbank rate “Euribor” plus 0.9pc for the first year, rising to 2.39pc plus Euribor afterwards. By comparison, most Spanish mortgages tend to require a minimum 30pc deposit and interest rates start from 2pc above Euribor. Unlike mainstream mortgages, these loans only apply to particular homes. Buyers can choose from a handful of Spanish apartments – all of which have been repossessed from bankrupt property developers and are now owned by the bank. “People view it as free money,” says Tim French of Iberian Properties, an estate agent and mortgage broker based in Spain. “I try not to market too many of these properties, as there are risks involved.

“Over the last five years there have been a lot more British buyers interested in these types of deals, I think mainly because sterling was weaker, and interest rates are also low.” “The bank wants to get rid of these properties. It lent aggressively to developers before 2007, but when the credit crunch hit, their developments didn’t sell. When their valuations dropped, these properties ended up having mortgages higher than their value.” Banco Popular, the fifthlargest Spanish bank by deposits, has set up an online property portal, Aliseda, to market the homes. The properties are also being snapped up by investment firms to market to British people interested in buy‑to‑let.

Well my last item certainly opened potential for debate, with several folk taking opportunity to tell me I’d merely confirmed their view that religion is the primary cause of all wars, terrorism and unrest in the World. And they all seemed amazed when I pretty much agreed with them. Of course, religion isn’t the only cause for wars and terrorism, but it certainly is one of the main causes. Religion, as well as politics was a primary cause of the violence of Northern Ireland. Religious extremists certainly loom large in the recent bout of terrorism around the World. The Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition and the Holocaust all had their roots in religious extremism, as in fact did the Crucifixion of Jesus. For religion has little to do with faith, and despite much evil having been undertaken over the centuries in the name of Christianity, the teachings of Christ allow no room for the violence that has so often been perpetrated in his name. For Jesus taught “love your enemy”, “turn the other cheek” and “do good to those who hurt you.” He taught that we shouldn’t judge others, that God alone could take action against our persecutors or enemies. Not much room for religious violence in any of that! And yet sadly human beings, usually in search of power, have an

25

awful tendency to invoke religious ideals, usually completely out of context, in order to justify their own evil thoughts and deeds. And so it was that the religious leaders of his day had to destroy Jesus because his gentle, peaceful and forgiving words completely undermined their authority. So, for any who really believe that the Christian faith, rather than human misrepresentation of that faith, is the root cause of wars, then here’s a challenge: Search the New Testament of the Bible (the basis of the Christian faith) and show me anything that you see as promoting war or violence. Religion, without Christ’s teaching may well engender violence, but a true Christian faith will always prefer peace. Grow homegrown veg

Rationing of any kind is always likely to make people sit up straight – the idea that we can’t buy as much of whatever we’d like causes instant consternation, even if it is iceberg lettuce. It causes some understandable confusion, too, in this case, as being only allowed three heads of the stuff prompts the question why you would ever want that many – of all the veg to pick from, iceberg has got to be up there with the least flavoursome items nature has ever come up with. And therein lies the solution to the current supermarket vegetable shortage: the best approach to filling your fridge – and eating your fill – is to be guided by flavour. This means scouring the veg aisles for what l o o k s most vibrant. Flavour stems from vibrancy, and locally grown, seasonal produce is always going to be where it’s at. As Jane Scotter of biodynamic

farm Fern Verrow puts it: “Things only taste good when grown in the right conditions and climate. I never buy lettuce or tomatoes out of season because they just don’t taste that good.” And what is good in Blighty right now are brassicas, leeks and root veg – swede, potatoes, celeriac, beets … Spring greens are coming into their own and purple sprouting broccoli – infinitely superior in flavour, according to organic farm Riverford’s Guy Watson, to the

calabrese variety that the Spanish frosts have depleted – is mere weeks away from hitting our shelves. So it’s all about making do and

being creative. And we’ve got the goods for you right here. Serves 4: 1 large savoy cabbage, 20ml olive oil. A small knob of butter, plus extra for greasing and dotting, ½ tsp fennel seeds (optional), 500g lean, well-seasoned sausage meat. Salt and black pepper. 1 Choose 7 of the largest, nicest outer cabbage leaves and wash them. Bring a large pan of well-salted water to the boil then blanch the leaves for 2 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to lift the leaves out, keeping the water. Rinse the leaves briefly with cold water and blot on a clean tea towel. 2 Cut the rest of the cabbage into quarters and bring the water back to the boil. Cook the cabbage until the leaves are tender, but the stem still firm – about 5 minutes. Drain the cabbage and, once cool enough, squeeze out any excess water. Cut away the stem, chop the

leaves roughly, put in a bowl and dress with the olive oil, a knob of butter, salt and pepper and some fennel seeds, if you like. Squeeze the sausage meat from the casing. 3 Butter a 20cm round ovenproof dish. Choose the nicest leaf from the 7 you saved and put it at the bottom of the dish. Now arrange the other 6 so they cover the sides of the dish, overlapping a lot and hanging over the edges. 4 Now, for the layers. Press a third of the dressed cabbage mixture into the bottom of the leaf-lined dish. Then make a layer with half the sausage meat, pressing it down firmly. Repeat the process, ending with a third layer of cabbage. Fold over the overhanging leaves and cover to make a neat parcel. 5 Dot with a little butter and bake at 180C/350F/ gas mark 4 for 1 hour. When ready, let it sit for 5 minutes before inverting on to a plate carefully, as there will be hot juices. Serve with rich tomato sauce, buttery mash, or both.

The Great British Bake Off to return to TV screens in 2017 The Great British Bake Off will return to television screens this year, it has been confirmed, after the BBC agreed to waive its right to force Channel 4 to hold off until 2018 at the earliest. The BBC, which lost the rights to the programme last September after its rival broadcaster bid a reported £25m per year, said it wished the show well. The source said: “In this instance, we believe it would be undignified to have one public service broadcaster in a potential dispute with another and the associated costs for each party would ultimately come out of programming budgets. We don’t believe in driving up costs in the public sector.” A BBC spokesperson said the broadcaster would not “use its hold back clause against C4 and Love Productions in relation to Bake Off and its associated shows”. She added: “We wish the programme well for the future and look forward to seeing who is cast on the show. The BBC is proud of the part it has played in growing and nurturing the programme – doing that is at the core of what the BBC does. We have many exciting projects for the future. Watch this space.”

Quick beany enchiladas Ingredients Cooking time 1 hour 1 tbsp sunflower oil, plus extra for greasing 100g/3½oz frozen chopped onion (or 1 medium onion, peeled and roughly chopped) 100g/3½oz mixed frozen peppers (or 1 yellow pepper, de-seeded and sliced) 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 x 400g tin red kidney beans in chilli sauce 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice 3 heaped tbsp chopped fresh coriander, plus extra to garnish 4 x 40g/1½oz ready-

made flour tortillas 75g/2½oz mature cheddar, coarsely grated salt and freshly ground black pepper. Method Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and peppers and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until softened and beginning to turn golden-brown. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and kidney beans. Bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce the heat until the mixture is simmering. Simmer gently for 12-15 minutes, or until the sauce is thick and glossy. Remove the pan from

the heat, then stir in the lime juice (or lemon juice) and coriander. Season, to taste, with salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Brush the insides of a shallow ovenproof dish all over with a little oil. Place one of the flour tortillas in the dish and spoon one-quarter of the bean mixture into the centre. Roll up the tortilla and push it to one side of the dish. Repeat the process with the remaining flour tortillas and bean mixture, lining the rolled tortillas up against each other. Sprinkle the enchiladas with the grated cheese and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and turned golden-brown. Just before serving, garnish the enchiladas with fresh coriander. To serve, divide the enchiladas equally among the serving plates. Serve with a mixed green salad. Serves 2.

Foolproof Traditional English Pancake Recipe

What You’ll Need 225g (8 oz) plain or all-purpose flour Pinch salt 2 large, fresh eggs 600ml (2½) cups milk 2 tsp melted butter plus extra melted butter for cooking. How to Make It Makes 12 pancakes Sieve the flour into a large baking bowl, add the salt. Make a well in the centre of the flour and add the eggs. Beat well until smooth and

lump free. Add half the milk and the 2 tsp of butter, beat well. Add the remaining milk and stir. Leave the batter to rest for 15 minutes. Lightly grease a pancake pan or frying pan with a little melted butter. Heat until very hot and add a ladleful of batter so it evenly and thinly coats the base of the pan. Cook until set and lightly golden. Using a spatula or if you are really brave try tossing the pancake in the

air, and cook on the other side for approx 30 seconds. Slip the pancake from the pan onto a warm plate. Cover the plate with a tea cloth and keep warm.. Continue as above until all the batter is used up. To Serve On Pancake Day, pancakes are traditionally eaten sprinkled with sugar and a squeeze of lemon. However, serve as you like with jam, Golden Syrup, honey, chocolate spread; whatever takes your fancy.

Food Information

Pancake Power

Pancake Day aka Shrove Tuesday in the UK and Ireland, is the day for eating traditional pancakes which are thin and crepelike; the true pancake of this day. English-style pancakes are not unlike the thin French crepe and in no way resemble the American-style breakfast pancake. As Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent,

pancakes traditionally were a way to use up any stocks of milk, butter and eggs which were forbidden during the abstinence of Lent. The custom continues today even though such abstinence is rare nowadays. Making pancakes is so quick, easy and cheap, but make sure you prepare plenty, they are always very popular. Even if you have some left over, do

not worry, they freeze very well. Simply layer them between greaseproof paper one, by one. Pop them into a large freezer bag, seal and freeze, To defrost, place the bag into the refrigerator and let them slowly thaw. They can be reheated very quickly by heating a frying pan and popping the defrosted pancakes in for about 30 seconds each side. Serve immediately.

Six months later, case of missing Spanish teen is going nowhere

There are no more search parties looking for Diana Quer. It has been six months since the 18-year-old from Madrid went missing in the Galician coastal village of A Pobra do Caramiñal, where she used to spend all her summers. But in the early hours of August 22, 2016 she disappeared somewhere along the road leading from the local fiestas, which she had just attended, to her family home in the outskirts of town. Although the last time anyone saw her alive was 2.40am, her white iPhone 6 continued to send out signals until approximately 5am, indicating a fast eastward journey toward an area known as Taragoña, in the nearby municipality of Rianxo, on the Arousa estuary. That is where the phone was eventually found, lying in the mud, by a local shellfish harvester. Following the young woman’s disappearance, a massive search operation was deployed. Scores of volunteers combed the nearby countryside for days on end. Some of the world’s best scent dogs were brought in from Madrid to sniff out any possible traces of blood or bodily fluids. Human and animal trackers ventured into old sawmills and abandoned factories in search of clues. Ships scoured the coastline, and helicopters scrutinized the woods from above. Meanwhile, in a major technological effort, Civil Guard officers examined millions of telephone signals and finally honed in on 80 phone users whose own signals followed the same pattern as Diana Quer’s phone between 3am and 5am that night. They also reviewed footage from around 40 surveillance cameras and checked thousands of license plates. They interviewed friends, relatives and anyone else with the slightest connection to Diana, both in Galicia and in her permanent residence of Pozuelo, an upscale

suburb of Madrid. Witnesses stepped up for the first two months to report Diana sightings, to testify to the family fights they had seen and heard, and to explain what the victim had been wearing on the night of her disappearance – her clothes were alternately described as pink shorts or long dark pants, depending on the witness. Some individuals describing themselves as fishermen asserted that Diana showed up at the solitary dock of Taragoña inside a car with several men, then got into a second vehicle after having an argument with the first driver. This seemed like a solid clue until the sources were later described by the Civil Guard as unreliable. Now, investigators are once again poring over the 200 or so testimonies sitting on their desks. At this point, they think it is unlikely that Diana reached Rianxo alive, and they suspect that her attacker may have dropped the phone there on purpose as a distraction. The inquiry remains open under a new investigating judge who is keeping the proceedings under seal. And authorities continue to hold that “all hypotheses remain open.” In fact, the kidnapping option is under consideration again, even though it was initially discarded by the Civil Guard, who favoured the idea that Diana left of her own free will after a fight with her mother and sister. The Civil Guard believes that all the media attention may have worked against the search for Diana Diana’s complicated family life continued to make headlines weeks after her disappearance, with both her parents, who are separated, sending out conflicting versions about life at home. The Civil Guard believes that

all the media attention may have worked against the search for Diana. Television coverage of the case achieved high ratings, especially after her parents had a live confrontation on set. In an added twist to the tale of woe within a well-off suburban family, the mother lost custody of the younger daughter, Valeria. In December, a support group for families of missing persons called SOS Desaparecidos received an email purporting to come from Diana Quer. Investigators quickly concluded that somebody was attempting to pass themselves off as the young woman, and noted that great care had been taken to avoid being traced – a fact that suggested it was more than just a joke in bad taste. The email linked to a tweet by the real Diana Quer, who wrote over a year ago “how good it would feel to disappear for a little while.” The association filed a complaint in court, asking for an investigation, but it has yet to receive a reply. Sources at the Civil Guard admit that the investigation is stuck. Officers are now waiting to see if some new clue turns up, or if one of the suspects on their shortlist – some of whom have ties to the drug world in the Arousa estuary – makes a mistake. In the meantime, Diana’s family has hired a team of private investigators. But six months later, the case seems nowhere closer to being solved.

NEW YORK CITY

LETS Travel

It is easy to understand why Malaga City is capital of the Costa del Sol. Once considered the poor cousin of Andalusia’s capital city, Seville, it now competes successfully for attention, thanks to its profusion of quirky museums, delightful pedestrianised centre, innovative restaurants and stylish hotels, many featuring trendy rooftop terraces with bar, pool and stunning views. Muelle Uno is a contemporary leisure complex in the port - while a new arty district called SOHO is bringing a bohemian edge to the city. Whether you are visiting from a cruise, or a weekend break, you will be pleasantly surprised by this intriguing city.

Welcome to New York City! The city where dreams are made, that never sleeps. The New York CityPASS and the New York Pass Top Attractions in New York There are two discount passes that you can purchase before you go to New York. The New York CityPASS and the New York Pass. They are very easy to use and can save a lot of time and money. The Manhattan Sky Helicopter Tour If you want to have a once in a lifetime experience and see Manhattan from above then you should take a helicopter tour of Manhattan! For around £ 163 you’ll be flying above the Big Apple for 12-15 minutes. Empire State Building Observatory Deck Of course, a top attraction wouldn’t be complete without an observation deck! On the 86th floor you have a wonderful view of Manhattan. I recommend going on a clear day, that way you can see most of the city.

Tesla Model 3 will launch on schedule in 2017 Tesla will reportedly start to build pre-production versions of the its $35,000 mass-market Model 3 sedan in a few weeks. The automaker plans to launch the Model 3 in late 2017 and begin fulfilling 373,000 preorders for the vehicle through 2018; customers put down $1,000 each after the Model unveiling in March 2016 for the privilege of waiting two years or more to take delivery of their car. Because Tesla was three years late launching its last vehicle, the Model X SUV, speculation has been rampant that the Model 3 will suffer similar delays. Everyone also

now knows that the Model X’s complicated design and troubled initial production created a hellish situation for Tesla CEO Elon Musk and his team. Memories of that struggle have fueled views that Tesla will make Model 3 customers wait and wait and wait some more to get their cars. But those fears are misplaced. In fact, Tesla is on now on track to potentially launch the Model 3 ahead of schedule. Initial production is slated for July, assuming that Tesla can organize its main supply chain and not have to be waiting on parts.

Model 3 test-builds will commence on February 20, as widely reported. Initial production is slated for July, assuming that Tesla can organize its supply chain and not have to wait on parts. Test building will help the carmaker refine the Model 3 design and isolate any quality control issues. It will also demonstrate whether a simpler design for the Model 3 will enable production at the scale Musk needs to meet pre-orders and push toward a 500,000-peryear run rate by 2018 (not all those vehicles would be Model 3s, of course, but the 3 is expected to consume the bulk of Tesla’s future manufacturing capacity).

There will be obvious signs of whether Tesla is on track. In March and April, we should start to spot prototype Model 3s in the wild, undergoing real-world road trials. Tesla will also have to give the government several Model 3s for crash testing. And production versions of the vehicle will appear at Tesla’s stores, to stoke interest and reassure Model 3 pre-order customers that their cars are on the way. The Model 3 in terms of features and performance may not be unveiled until the car’s launch. But that launch could happen in short order, in production fires up in July.

Johnson is world Number 1

American Dustin Johnson became world number one for the first time with victory at the Genesis Open. Johnson, 32, carded a par 71 on the final day to finish on 17 under with compatriot Scott Brown and Belgium’s Thomas Pieters tied second on 12 under. The US Open champion had to play both his third and fourth rounds on Sunday after storms disrupted the tournament. England’s Justin Rose finished in a five-way tie for third as he shot a fourth-round 68 to finish on 11 under.

Late Messi Strike

Lewis Hamilton has moved to clarify his comments on team data sharing in Formula 1, insisting he has ‘zero problems’ with Mercedes or new team-mate Valtteri Bottas. The threetime world champion had suggested that his braking points and driving lines were shared within his team, claiming it was unfair for a driver to gain an advantage by studying someone else’s “homework”. “I go out, do my laps, do all my homework and the other guy can see everything,” Hamilton said.

Real Madrid extended their lead at the summit of La Liga and continued their undefeated home record this season with a dominant victory 2-0 over mid-table Espanyol. Meanwhile Lionel Messi’s 90th-minute penalty saw off the challenge of gutsy Leganes and spared Barcelona from a second successive embarrassing result. The champions underwhelmed again after Tuesday’s 4-0 Champions League defeat at Paris St-Germain and had keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to thank for a string of great saves. Messi gave Barca an early lead, before Unai Lopez fired in the equaliser. The Barcelona forward then slammed in the late winner from the spot. Victory sees the Catalan giants move two points above Sevilla into second place in La Liga. They have 51 points, one fewer than leaders Real Madrid who have two games in hand.

VUNIPOLA RULES HIMSELF OUT

Billy Vunipola has admitted he is unlikely to play any part in England’s Six Nations campaign as he continues his recovery from a knee injury. He underwent surgery in December to repair ligament damage sustained during the autumn. Head coach Eddie Jones had expressed hope that Vunipola could get back in time for England’s final Six Nations match against Ireland in Dublin on March 18 but that now appears unlikely.

Ben Stokes became the most expensive foreign player in Indian Premier League history after being signed for more than $2m (£1.6m) by the Rising Pune Supergiants at auction on Monday. The recently named England Test vice-captain fetched seven times the amount of England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan, who was sold to the Kings XI Punjab for $300,000 (£240,000) in the opening stages of the IPL cricket auction being held in Bangalore. Stokes attracted multiple bids from the rival franchises competing in the eightteam Twenty20 competition before the gavel came down in the final round after Pune put in a bid of 145 million rupees (£1.74m).
