STURGEON SOLTIMES PLANS ANOTHER REFERENDUM

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says she plans to trigger another independence referendum. The First Minister said Scottish people must be given a choice between independence and ‘hard’ Brexit – and that the new referendum should be held between autumn 2018 and spring

2019. That could see a second independence vote take place as early as autumn 2018 – just four years on from when Scots voted by 55% to 45% to stay part of the United Kingdom. Speaking at her official residence, Bute House in Edinburgh, she said: “In my view it is important that Scotland is able to exercise

the right to choose our own future at a time when the options are clearer than they are now, but before it is too late to decide our own path.” A UK Government spokesman responded to the announcement, saying that a second Scottish independence referendum would be “divisive” and “cause huge economic uncertainty at the worst possible time”. “The evidence clearly shows that a majority of people in Scotland do not want a second independence referendum. “The Scottish Government should focus on delivering good government and public services for the people in Scotland.” She added: “The Scottish government’s mandate for offering this choice is beyond doubt.” Ms Sturgeon said she would go to Holyrood next week and “seek the authority of the Scottish Parliament to agree with the UK Government the details of a section 30 order.”

Spanish government fails to remove single Franco-era symbol in five years The removal of these vestiges of Franco’s deeply divisive rule is mandated by Spain’s Historical Memory Law. Passed by the former Socialist Party (PSOE) government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in 2007, the law made provision for the removal of statues and the changing of place names connected to Franco’s regime – legislation that was aimed at providing moral redress for the victims of Spain’s bitter Civil War and the long dictatorship that followed. The Spanish government says red tape and costs are to blame for delays Under the Socialists, 570 of a total of 705 symbols catalogued by a commission charged with the job were removed but the process ground to a halt in April 2011 and there has been no movement since the conservative PP won general elections in November 2011. Recently a senator with the Basque nationalist party EH Bildu, Jon Iñarritu, called on the government to explain this five-year halt and the PP responded by citing red tape and high costs. “Which Francoist vestiges have been taken down from ministries and public institutions since 2012?” asked Iñarritu in a written question to the Spanish government, in which the senator also

asked about the planned timetable for the removal of the remaining 135 symbols of the dictatorship. The PP responded on February 27 saying that the “remainder of the [symbols] are currently being processed, either because they are the subject of an administrative process or because of the cost involved.” The question from Iñarritu comes a month after Spain’s main opposition party, the PSOE, called for Franco’s remains to be removed from the controversial Valley of the Fallen site outside Madrid. That demand – part of a push by the PSOE to stop perceived foot dragging on the part of the PP on implantation of the Historical Memory Law – was made in the wake of a government statement that the site is not a monument to Franco. But the site contains just two marked graves: those of Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera, the founder of the Falange, Spain’s fascist-inspired political party. At the same time, thousands of prisoners of war who fought against Franco in the civil conflict were among the workforce used in its construction.

Local Charity Support A few days ago Ruth from the Sleepcentre in Albox made contact with me and we discussed the issue of recycling beds. Ruth informed me that many times they take what are very good condition beds to the tip when she felt there must be some way to donate to those in need of a bed. She did ensure that all beds donated were agreed to with the customer. A quick conversation between myself and social services soon made us realise that there is a need from many families for beds. Today we made the first delivery of a double bed and mattress and a single bed and mattress to a family who were absolutely delighted to receive them. It strikes me that the British community in Zurgena and the wider valley are playing a great role in supporting local Teatro Saavedra Cantoria Fri 24th Sat 25th March 7.30pm Doors open 7.00pm Teatro Municipal Zurgena Sat 1st April 7.30pm Sun 2nd April 3.00pm

(I am bound to have missed someone off). It is really heart-warming to see how by such actions we improve our integration into the society we have adopted. These acts are very much appreciated I can assure you. It is often I who get the thanks, which is very unfair, as I am only acting as the contact point for all your generous acts. So may I take this opportunity to thank all of you who contribute to all the above charitable acts on behalf of the people who receive or benefit from them. Jim Simpson

remember, the European promise supplanted the decline and fall of the British Empire. Britain was to be a towering, proselytising giant at the heart of Europe, but it never came to be. Instead, the question of what Britain’s role in the world is, 50 years after we lost an empire, has never been wrestled with. For many British expats, the shadow of the original is not far away. The ability for millions to not only travel but to set up lives in other countries is a remarkable fact, particularly since most people in the world speak smatterings or fluent English. And that’s the point. Empires are seldom militarily-based. Power is no guarantee of prestige and global

European Union. Culturally, Britain sits at on apex of pre-eminence. As any expat English teacher will attest to, the cultural, or soft power tenants of Britain are the most ubiquitous of any country in the world. The English language and the osmosis of British music, film and fashion around the globe create the usurpable fact that Britain’s reputation and influence are already second to none. If Brexit is not about economics or military dominance or cultural hegemony then what precisely are the imperial designs ministers have? What could be more imperial than what we already have? Alastair Stewart Freelance Writer editor@darrow.org.uk Call

“Empire 2.0” is the Brexit plan now being touted by the UK Government. The term was coined by sceptical officials, worried about the importance given by ministers to creating an African free trade area ahead of Brexit negotiations with Europe. Some are holding the comment up as everything right about the promise of Brexit. Yet this remark was meant as a detraction, not as a bolstering affirmation of a post-Brexit Britain. It’s a laughable prospect, not least because it exposes the dark underbelly of ignorance about atrocities done in the imperial name. Nevertheless, there was always a natural inevitability to the idea. For Brexit supporters old enough to

hegemony, although it does help, but there is much more to it than ‘might is right’. Economically, as well, Britain is already the sixth largest economy in the world (it actually slipped behind France after the EU referendum). Brexit has, with some irony, threatened that robust position with the financial uncertainty it’s brought to global companies based in Britain. It begs the question then what a new British Empire would look like. Is it a Union Flag fluttering over colonies and imposing our will in foreign lands? The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have already demonstrated what we can do militarily and Britain already operates its own nuclear deterrent, none of which has anything to do with the

SPANISH POLICE INVESTIGATE SUSPECTED HUMAN TRAFFICKING ROUTE

Police in eastern Spain opened an investigation into a suspected human trafficking route after discovering two trucks carrying Iraqi refugees in less than a month. A civil guard spokesperson told The Associated Press Sunday that an anonymous tip led officers to find eight Iraqis of Kurdish ethnicity, including four children, in the back of a refrigerated truck on a highway near the town of Teruel on Friday. Two parents with their three children between the ages of five to 10, a mother with her twoyear-old son, and a man traveling alone were crammed in the truck’s refrigerated trailer. The spokesperson, speaking anonymously in line with police policy, said that all eight were in good health despite having been inside the truck’s cooling chamber while it was on. Police placed them in the temporary care of a NGO in Teruel dedicated to helping migrants. The Iraqis could ask Spain for political asylum, the spokesperson said. The truck was located a few kilometres (miles) from where police had discovered another truck illegally transporting a

Kurdish family of two adults and four children last month. Police say both trucks were heading toward Britain after departing from the southern Spanish region of Murcia. The police investigation will include how the Iraqis made it to Spain. The driver of Friday’s truck is a 37-year-old Romanian man. The other truck stopped last month was driven by a Bulgarian man. Both were arrested on charges of human trafficking. In August 2015, 71 migrants were found dead in the back of refrigerated truck in Austria. Thousands also have perished at sea or on foot while fleeing the war in Syria and other violent conflicts in an attempt to reach Europe.

MOJÁCAR BOWLS CLUB CELEBRATES THE 3RD ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR NEW GREEN

Mojácar Bowls Club has celebrated the third anniversary of their new bowling green, located at the town’s Hotel Servigroup Marina Playa. To mark the occasion, the club invited members of other clubs in the area to take part in a friendly competition. Also present were Ana García and Emmanuel Agüero, Mojácar Councillors for Sport and Tourism respectively, as well as the Director of the Servigroup Hotel Marina Playa, Ricardo Escudero. On March 7, 2014, the Bowling Green was inaugurated by Rosmari Cano, the Mayor of Mojácar and other dignitaries of the province of Almeria. The green is located 100 meters from the hotel and has an open air, 25 metre x 25 metre artificial turf surface. It has everything for a sporting day including 6 rinks for up to 48 players, a club house with a bar and a terrace and changing rooms. The Mojácar Club was founded in 1994 with around 25 members and

was originally located in the “La Mata” area. When this establishment closed, the current facilities were built with the collaboration of Mojácar Town Council and the company Servigroup. Since the relocation, the club has grown and, currently has 65 members. Club President, Alan Bramble, is very pleased with the new setup which he says, has not lost the “spirit and the essence” of the founders. Ana García expressed her pleasure at the wide range of sports on offer in Mojácar, an area which they are working to consolidate and expand even further with new activities in the future.

MOVING “BURIAL OF THE SARDINE” IN MOJÁCAR Mojácar re-enacted the Burial of the Sardine, carrying on the tradition that marks the end of the Carnival and the beginning of Lent. For the first time, Mojácar reenacted the battle between Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma, a wellknown allegory in the Libro del Buen Amor (Book of Good Love), written in 1330 by the Archpriest Hita. Members of the carnival group, “Los Implicados”, represented the challenge and the subsequent defeat of Don Carnal in the face of such an austere rival, in the town’s Centro de Usos Múltiples. The solemn burial of the sardine pageant was carried out after the battle at 8.00 pm, with several attendants who escorted the fish to its final destination. The crowd of locals and visitors who accompanied the funeral procession emphasized the greater

participation, every year, of the town’s non Spanish residents who enjoy getting involved with the local traditions. Numerous ‘mourners’ accompanied the beloved sardine along its candlelit final farewell with litanies, pronounced by the burial “priest” and responded to with passionate sorrow by those present. Each and every Saint’s requests are relevant and to the point. The Mojácar Municipal Band played all along the route, putting a final musical touch to the Carnival.

This year, the Carnival has had an even bigger program of activities, with more people joining in than ever. Finally, after the burning of the sardine, good heart-warming hot chocolate and churros were served to comfort the “mourners”, courtesy of the Town Council.

REVIEWS FILM OF THE WEEK The Shack PG-13 2h 12min Drama, Fantasy 9 June 2017 (UK) After the abduction and assumed death of Mackenzie Allen Phillip’s youngest daughter, Missy, Mack receives a letter and has the suspicion it’s from God asking him to return to The Shack where Missy may have been murdered. After contemplating it, he leaves his home to go to The Shack for the first time since Missy’s abduction and encounters what will change his life forever. When things go bad we all blame God or the universe for what happens and The Shack doesn’t provide easy answers. The standout scene is when Mack is taken for judgment by “Wisdom” (Alice Braga) and asked if he would condemn his late, abusive father to Hell even after he is shown what his father’s upbringing was like. The Shack is a little heavy handed and the story is pretty straightforward but, liked the uplifting message.

he Cheltenham Gold Cup is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race run on the New Course at Cheltenham Racecourse in England, over a distance of 3 miles 2½ furlongs (5,331 m), and during its running there are 22 fences to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year during the Cheltenham Festival in March. The steeplechase, which is open to horses aged five years and over, is the most prestigious of all National Hunt events and it is sometimes referred to as the Blue Riband of jump-racing. Its roll

of honour features the names of such chasers as Arkle, Best Mate, Golden Miller, Kauto Star and Mill House. The Gold Cup is the most valuable nonhandicap chase in Britain, and in 2014 it offered a total prize fund of £550,000. Since 2014 it has been sponsored by Betfred, after the betting company bought the gove r n m e nt - ow n e d Tote in June 2011, but in late 2015 they lost their sponsorship following Jockey Club’s and Arena Racing new initiative to not allow bookmaker sponsorships on their tracks that do not offer any contribution to

horse racing from their offshore business. Only two weeks later a new sponsorship deal was announced with Timico, an independent internet service provider who’s CEO Tim Radford is a horse owner having top chasers like Somersby and Racing Demon associated with his name. Timico also

offered an increase of £25,000 to reach a total of £575,000 prize money for the 2016 Gold Cup renewal. The 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup was won for the first time in over 40 years by a novice, Coneygree who only had 3 previous starts over fences.

The town’s religious architecture is very impressive and visitors should take some time to visit the church of Nuestra Seňora de la Asunción. Founded in 1505, the church is situated in the “Old Town” of Huercal Overa. Here you will find

the traditional Spanish plaza which is surrounded by bars, restaurants and local shops. Another great monument to visit is La Torre Vigía (The Watch Tower), that stands guard over the town. The tower, that was recently reformed, can be accessed by foot and for a small charge of one euro, visitors are able to explore inside the tower and take in the breathtaking views of the Huercal Overa.

Is it possible to be healthy and obese?

Does stress make you fat, even if you don’t overeat? That is the question researchers from UCL have been trying to answer by giving volunteers of different shapes and sizes a haircut and measuring levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their hair. Long-term stress raises cortisol levels, and the researchers found that the larger volunteers had higher levels in their hair. So does this mean we can attribute obesity to stress and, if so,

what can we do about it? The idea itself isn’t new. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys. It plays a vital role in keeping glucose levels in the bloodstream in a steady state. When we are stressed or threatened, cortisol levels rise to release more glucose from stores in the liver, so we have more fuel to fight or run for our lives. Too much cortisol means too much glucose floating around and if it doesn’t get

used, the excess is stored as fat. But it has been hard to measure long-term cortisol levels reliably because they fluctuate over time. Traditionally, they have been measured in blood, urine or saliva but this new study used hair cut as close to the scalp as possible to measure accumulated levels over a two-month period. Researchers found that obese individuals with a BMI in excess of 30, or waist circumference above

Find the right shampoo for your hair

Shampoo and conditioner are the unsung heroes of the haircare industry. But unless you’ve found ones that have truly changed your hair, it’s likely that you pick up whatever is on offer at the supermarket and don’t give it a second thought. Yet the right shampoo makes your hair infinitely easier to style and maintain. A good formula will cleanse your scalp and remove leftover styling products, dirt and excess oil without stripping it dry and leaving it flaky or itchy. Unfortunately, there is no precise method to finding your perfect shampoo, but there are a few things that can really help. If you want to boost the shine or reduce frizz, then up the ante with your conditioner and invest in a good mask, such as Josh

Wood’s Glossing Mask, and Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment. While those with thicker hair might benefit from smoothing formulas, if you have finer locks, any ingredients designed to do anything except cleanse will only weigh your hair down. On the same note, unless you have afro or naturally coarse hair, two-in-ones or cleansing conditioners should be avoided. Instead, fine-hair types should look to Kérastase’s Cristalliste shampoo, which leaves locks feeling lighter at the roots without drying out your mid-lengths and ends. Also, invest in Color Wow Color Security Conditioner Fine to Normal Hair, from £9.

Dr Sarah Jackson, of UCL’s Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, explained: “People who had higher hair cortisol levels also tended to have larger waist measurements, which is important because carrying excess fat around the abdomen is a risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, and premature death.”

Sales@soltimes.com 950 121 936 Apple Tree Yard TV Drama 2017

“Dear X whatever it was between us it was never meant to bear much reality. That was the point, wasn’t it? No real life. No feelings, no mess.” I had read Louise Doughty’s book and wasn’t disappointed with this tv drama which is available to buy on dvd produced by Doughty, Lucy Richer, Manda Lewin and Amanda Coe. It was Doughty’s seventh novel. “Crazy Paving” was her debut novel back in 1995. Her sixth novel took the media by storm:”Whatever You Love” pulling her sharply in focus as one to watch and this has proved the case with Apple Tree Yard. It stars Emily Watson as Dr Yvonne Carmichael, an eminent scientist who lives a conventional suburban life in a comfortable and stable marriage but sexless and at 50+ it seems that Yvonne would like some excitement and danger to spice up her life. She addresses a Select Committee on a subject she is knowledgeable aboutDNA gene therapy. One of the security men chatted to her after the meeting, congratulating her and then offers to show her the chapel in the crypt, in particular a plaque from Emily Wilding Davison in 1911 using the House of Commons as her home address. She died when she threw herself in front of a horse. There is an instant attraction between Yvonne and Mark Costley, nameless at this stage. Passionate kissing in the broom cupboard soon leads to a quick sexual encounter. Slap, bang, wallop and it’s over in minutes leaving Yvonne stunned. It seems totally out of character for her to do this. She is middle-aged and relatively happy with husband Gary played by Mark Bonner who has been on our screens a lot recently, a bit self-conscious of the ageing process in feeling less sexy and no longer a beauty. “I look like a bloody jelly baby” she tells him. I disagree. She still looks beautiful. At home she starts typing a series of letters to X when she can’t sleep at night, restless. He will never read them but that doesn’t matter. She has committed what she sees as being a “most reckless act”

Special Offers Visit:

describing her lover as a wolf devouring her. Her friend Suze (Susan Lynch) has nicknamed her Captain Sensible and refers to Yvonne’s marriage as being “rock solid.” If only she knew the truth. Yvonne does try to break off the relationship in case their spouses or families get hurt. She does discover that her husband has an admirer who is obsessed with him, Rosa and he has a fling with her. Perhaps it’s this or their lack of physical contact that pushes Yvonne over the edge but she is soon enticed back to her lover’s arms, finding him irresistible. It is Ben Chaplin after all. The camera shows us a close up of their fore-play followed by sex in a toilet cubicle. He seems to enjoy sex in sordid, public places. Yvonne revels in her secretive and exciting life with her mysterious lover. We are then introduced to one of her colleagues, George Selway who she has known for two years. He seems harmless enough. But wait. “Fear makes animals of us all. But, really, we’re all just animals. Fear. Fear for your life. Civilisation is a dream.” When Yvonne goes to Jonathan’s leaving do, the confident sexy lady gets herself dolled up, with high heels and a tight dress to show off her curves. We see her looking coquettish with her lover in Apple Tree Yard before going on to the do. She is convinced he is a spook which amuses her. Feeling smug she allows herself to get plastered. George takes advantage of her in his own office towards the end of the party; he thumps her then brutally rapes her telling her in so many words that she’s no better than a whore. Interestingly, we come to realise that Yvonne has fallen foul of the law because we then see her sitting in a courtroom. What happened is for you discover for yourself. Compelling viewing. Horrifying and shocking at times to witness. It shows avarice, ambition mixed with naivety and self-deception. For anyone who loves thrillers this is certainly for you.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@ hotmail.co.uk. Hi everyone! You will see, very soon, these articles are going to become a little shorter and will probably have to be spread over several weeks. You will see them ‘coming alive’ with pictures and useful links that will be bright and bold. This will make the articles, hopefully, clearer and easier to understand. So that is something to look forward too. Today you can look forward to finding out how to get ‘Google’ to stop firing so many adverts at you. As you may have noticed, Google is no longer a provider information through their search engines, but an advertising agency! Ads are an unfortunate necessity on the internet, but this is how sites can afford to be ‘free’! If you find personalized adverts a little too

creepy, you can tell Google to stop showing you personalized adverts. This will mean, however, that you will get random adverts instead! There are a number of ways to do this: Android and ‘iDevices’ have setting that can limit the adverts but ‘real’ computers don’t, so today I will show you how to limit the advertising, at source, on a ‘real’ computer. As many of you will have some kind of android device (phone, tablet, Internet TV …) then you will have a Google Email address. So.. Step 1. Turn on your computer and go to <https:// myaccount.google. com/> and type in your email address and password. Step 2. Under <Personal Info and Privacy> • <Ad Settings> • <Manage Ad Settings>. Here you will see a familiar ‘on/ off’ button which you set for ‘Off’. This will bring up one more ‘pop-up’ (another really annoying trend that will be covered another time) to let you know exactly what’s going to happen, and if you’re okay with that go ahead and tap “Turn off.” Step 3. Go to <https://adblockplus. org/>, download and install this free program that does what it says on the tin!

Intel buys driverless car company Mobileye for $15bn. Intel is acquiring self-driving technology company Mobileye as it gears up plans to put a fleet of autonomous vehicles on the road this year. The American chipmaker announced it will purchase the company for $15.3bn (£12.5bn) in a record breaking deal that marks the highest price paid for an autonomous driving specialist and for an Israeli tech company. Both Intel and Mobileye have been working with BMW on a fleet of self-driving vehicles due to start testing on the roads in the second half of this year.

SOLO . .

Mobileye, founded in 1999, specialises in systems that prevent collisions and help autonomous cars navigate, accounting for 70pc of the global market. Intel, meanwhile, has been developing a new chip that is designed to power autonomous vehicles. Having missed out on the smartphone market to rival chipmaker ARM, Intel is determined to be a major player in autonomous vehicles. The company said only at the end of last year that it planned to spend $250m on self-driving tech in the next two years. “The acquisition of Mobileye essentially merges the intelligent

The deal, which is valued at $63.54 per share, is expected to close by the end of 2017. In the wake of initial reports about the acquisition, Mobileye’s share price bounced 30pc. The company had a market value of $10.6bn before talks were disclosed and had an adjusted net income of $173.3m in 2016. “In the years to come this deal may be read as the point when autonomous technology came of age,” said Paul Cuatrecasas, chief executive of Aquaa Partners.

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com Not getting married can lead to a very large inheritance tax bill. Question: My partner of 7 years (not married) has recently deceased and he had left me his house in his will. The house he has left me is the house where we lived and it has a value of 240,000 euro. I am being told that I will have to pay over 80,000 euro in inheritance tax. Surely this cannot be correct. Answer: This is unfortunately true. In Spain the inheritance tax is paid by the beneficiaries (not by the estate) and how much you pay depends on your relationship with the deceased. Descendants and spouse in Andalucía are each entitled to receive up to 250,000 euro tax free (since 1st of January of 2017). (Residents of Andalucia or of an estate in Andalucia being received by a resident in another country of the European Union.) On the other hand if you are not married and are not family there are no exemptions whatsoever and to make things worse, after applying the sliding scale of inheritance tax rates, the final amount needs to be multiplied by two. In your case estate planning was as simple as getting married and you would have paid no inheritance tax whatsoever. As things are, I am afraid there is no way of avoiding the payment for over 80,000 euro that you mention. Michael Davies. Abogado. Asda offers staff a pay rise for ‘flexible’ contract

Asda is offering staff a higher wage in exchange for a new contract which will introduce unpaid breaks and a requirement to work over Bank Holidays. The supermarket group will pay its workers £8.50 an hour, above the £7.50 National Living Wage rate due to come into force in April. The "flexible" deal means Asda's 135,000 staff can work around the store, on different days and hours. Asda says signing is voluntary and it is not a zero hours contract. However, it means that employees must work on bank holidays if the store needs them to, or, if they want to take the time off, it must come out of their 28 days of annual leave. Additionally, all breaks will be unpaid and Asda will alter its night shift window. Currently, workers are paid an extra £2.04 for unsociable hours that run between 10.00pm and 6.00am. Under the new agreement, unsociable hours will be cut to between midnight and 5.00am but the premium rate will rise to £2.54 an hour. Asda, which is owned by US retail giant Walmart, claims that 95% of its staff will be better off under the new deal, which will be introduced in October. It said it was "maintaining it commitment not to use zero hours

contracts and colleagues will be guaranteed minimum hours". Asda added: "Whilst the new contract will require colleagues to be flexible, fair and reasonable notice will be given for any changes to rotas, and consideration will be given to those with care requirements outside of work." The UK's third-biggest supermarket chain, after Tesco and Sainsbury's, has been struggling with declining sales. In the most recent quarter, over the Christmas period, it reported a 2.9% fall in like-for-like sales. However, the rate of decline in sales has slowed as it reported steeper drops in previous quarters. The new contracts have been given the seal of approval by the GMB union. Its general secretary, Tim Roache, said: "These new flexible contracts will help to ensure job security, ensure those accepting them are on the same terms and - best of all ensure that people will earn more money as a result. "The new contract offer involves quite a few changes, but as it's voluntary, this allows colleagues to choose whatever suits their circumstances best."

Day of El Raro’s Awakening

Andalucía has over three hundred fiestas a year which is mere child’s play compared to Alqueria which has six hundred and fifty three or seven hundred and forty two on a leap year. Now those readers with a grasp of higher mathematics will realise that this equates to more than one a day as most years only have three hundred and sixty five days. The inference is that there must be more than one fiesta on some days. This is obviously so, in fact on the ‘Day of El Raro’s Awakening’ there are fifteen fiestas, seven of which have parades, all of which include the consumption of alarming quantities of Remitroot liquor in all its forms. Of the seven parades two are magnificent affairs full of pomp and ceremony. The other five are little more than belligerent bands of petty criminals roaming the streets bent on mischievous, rather like any Saturday night in Alqueria. The two main parades start in opposing barrios. Leaving from the Hill People’s barrio and led by Manuela we have a procession celebrating the day freedom was granted for Alquerian women to consume Remitroot wine, swear and belch ‘Whistling Rufus’ in public. From the other end of the Village the Newcomer’s procession commemorates the day when Pepe Pervertio, a citizen of that barrio achieved international fame by being

arrested by the Vice Squad for using a Remitroot dibber for immoral purposes. Rodriquez, who leads the Newcomer’s parade is Manuela’s sworn enemy, in fact the hate for each other is almost tangible. Antonio Poyato managed to harness the waves of hate thus illuminating a sixty watt light bulb, unfortunately the glow had a strange black tinge and seemed to herald a sense of foreboding. Poyato had planned to aggravate their hostility and so power the whole Village by hate but the Madrid Government got wind of the scheme and promptly taxed it. The parades start simultaneously from their respective barrios and meet head on in the Calle Horno. Manuela and Rodriquez would glare at each other, neither giving way. The glaring has become part of the festivities with partisan cardboard ‘glaring’ masks worn by the procession’s participants. Manuela always has the advantage

however. Her feminine wiles of curly hair tossing and the fire her almond eyes produce always wear Rodriquez down. As he starts to drool and shake Manuela leads her procession forward sweeping the humiliated Newcomers aside. These events are usually followed by the traditional riot and a good time is had by all. Just what the ‘Day of El Raro’s Awakening’ signifies or what he was awaking from is unknown. Perhaps he was surfacing from an overindulgence of Remitroot liquor.

Coincidence?

I was at the Creative Writing Circle in Arboleas when for no particular reason I looked down at my hand – and there it wasn’t! Not my hand, but my wedding ring! I re-wound my mind as best I could to try and remember when I had last been aware of it on my finger. Butas it is a permanent part of me and is there all the time I was more aware of its absence than its presence. I began the usual: Pockets, handbag, floor - all to no avail. I continued: Street, pavement, car – no, nothing! I drove home with my mental rotavator churning through my memory logs for the past day or so, but all in vain – I could have lost it anywhere! I turned the car inside out, swept the garden with the eye of a hawk, but no ring was forthcoming. In the bathroom I shook out the towels, checked behind the washbasin, even turned out the basket containing clothes waiting for the washing machine. I searched on the bed, in the bed, under the bed. I took every single item off the dressing and bedside tables, systematically searched all the drawers, all the pockets in all of the jackets and coats in the wardrobe, hefted out every handbag and delved into its interior, but no ring did I find. ‘I’ll buy you another one.’ Pete nobly volunteered – he could see that I was upset. But it was gone and that was it. I resigned myself to its loss. I stopped searching and the Biggs state of

Hard Brexit could cost Spain €1bn

A hard Brexit could cost the Spanish economy €1bn (£870m) in lost exports and have “innumerable repercussions” for the 800,000 Britons who live in Spain and the 300,000 Spaniards in the UK, according to a leaked Madrid report. Written for the Spanish government’s Brexit commission the report says the UK’s departure from the EU will leave Spain hugely exposed economically and will affect everything from fishing rights to the careers of Spanish footballers playing for British clubs.

It says Brexit will see Spain’s GDP fall by between €2bn and €4bn, force the country to increase its EU budget contributions by €888m, and could result in some regions losing their European funding. Tourism and the food, pharmaceutical and automotive industries will be hit the hardest, with exports forecast to drop by between €500m and €1bn. The report says that wellknown Spanish companies with significant UK operations, such as Banco Santander, Telefónica and the energy giant Iberdrola, would suffer if the pound

weakened and the UK’s rating were lowered after Brexit. The paper goes on to suggest Brexit will have an impact on Gibraltar, migration policy, agriculture, universities “and could affect Spanish footballers in the UK”. Britons constitute the third largest national foreign group living in Spain after Romanians and Moroccans. The report argues that Brussels needs to consider Spanish interests – such as social security, free movement and tourism – when negotiating with the UK.

calm returned. Yesterday I called on Pauline, whose Diamond Anniversary is imminent. Naturally the conversation drifted on to wedding rings. ‘I lost mine once,’ Pauline reminisced. ‘We looked everywhere – car, garden, house, everywhere. We even went out into the garden with torches at night, in case we could see it glinting.’ ‘Did you ever find it?’ I enquired hopefully. ‘My daughter found it. She was staying with us and asked if she might use the washing machine. And there it was – in the folds of the rubber door liner!’ I didn’t think too much about Pauline’s story until the next morning. I unloaded the washing machine and wiped around the rubber door liner to remove excess water and there it was –a golden ring within the grey folds of the door liner! Was this pure coincidence? Or was some unknown cosmic force at work? Whichever, I have my ring back!

Great Food & Drink

O

n a spring night nothing warms you up like blisteringly hot Chinese-style chicken, served with a cooling side of herby salad. Check the chicken regularly, covering it with foil if it is browning too much. Serves 3 chicken thighs 6 For the marinade: garlic 3 large cloves onion 1, medium sized oyster sauce 100ml light soy sauce 4 tbsp honey 3 tbsp chilli sauce 3 tbsp For the salad: fish sauce 2 tsp caster sugar 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp mint leaves 10 coriander leaves a large handful chilli 1, medium-sized pink grapefruit 1 cashews 2 handfuls, roasted and salted To make the marinade peel the garlic then crush the cloves to a paste using a pestle and mortar and a pinch of salt. Put the paste into a large mixing bowl. Peel the onion, cut it in half

and chop it very finely. Combine with the garlic. Put the oyster and soy sauces, the honey and the chilli sauce into the mixing bowl and stir thoroughly. Push the chicken pieces into the marinade, turn them over and leave in a cool place for an hour or two. Set the oven at 180C/ gas mark 4. Place the chicken pieces into a nonstick roasting tin, spoon over half the marinade and place in the preheated oven. Roast for 45 minutes, basting once or twice with the remaining marinade, and regularly checking their progress. Cover the roasting tin with foil if necessary. To make the salad, combine the fish sauce,

caster sugar and lime juice in a small bowl. Roughly chop or tear the mint leaves and add to the bowl, together with the coriander leaves. Finely chop the chilli and add to the dressing.

We have been regulars at the BISTRO for many years and now we have Jayne its even better, many Theme nights and great value for money meals. Now the Vista Lounge is in full flow we love it even more. Charlie & Linda. We have been coming here for over 11 years and have seen the restaurant grow and grow. Still the best Sunday Lunch around. John and Margaret Withey. There is always a warm welcome, home from home and the food is always superb. Di & Bri. We have been enjoying visits to Bistro Bonita for 2 years and can honestly say the food is superb! And all the staff make it a real home from home experience, especially on Sundays for the roast which is always perfection. To discover one of the best eateries in Andalucia, up in the mountains was amazing to find, a British Oasis in the desert. Well worth a visit, we love it!! Jeff and Val. Catalan ex-leader Artur Mas banned from office over illegal referendum

Former Catalan leader Artur Mas has been banned from holding office for two years after organising an illegal independence referendum in 2014. The 61-year-old was convicted in Catalonia’s Superior Court of Justice of civil disobedience for organising the symbolic, non-binding poll. Spain’s Constitutional Court had banned the vote at the time. Catalonia, a region in the country’s north-east, has long campaigned for greater autonomy. The pro-independence Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) party called the verdict “disgraceful” and “undemocratic”. Mr Mas said: “We will appeal in Spain and then take the case to European courts, if we need to.” The Catalonia court also fined Mr Mas, who was president of Catalonia from 2010 until last year, €36,500 (£32,000; $39,000). Two former members of his government - his deputy Joana Ortega and education minister Irene Riga - were also found guilty and banned from public office for 21 and 18 months

Monks at a Franciscan monastery in Bolivia recently took in a new member, a formerly stray dog who now goes by the name Friar Bigotón — or Friar Moustache, in English. Britain´s place in the sun Gibraltar is an amazing co-mingling of past, present and future, and the list of things that a visit to Gibraltar should take in is as long as your arm in reality, but there are some things that you just can’t miss. Those things that literally speak to you, or beckon you in to view their stories are things that every visitor to Gibraltar wants to be certain to take a peek at. What do you want to do first? Well of course that depends on what you like most. If nature is your thing, the whales or dolphins, or the rare plants, or the monkeys are going to appeal to you. Gibraltar isn’t just history or shopping or outdoor sports, or even beaches. In reality, it’s all of the above and the best of nearly every world If you’re into shopping, well Gibraltar has some of the best goods and some amazing prices. What’s your pleasure? Hiking, boating or just wandering around the town in search of something interesting? The tax status of Gibraltar makes it a place that is well worth shopping with the smaller stores and local shops as interesting and intriguing as the larger ones. Experience a unique drive across the airport’s runway, where both pedestrians and vehicles cross, this is controlled by traffic lights and barriers. Both RAF and civilians use the airport with daily flights from UK. See the land frontier with Spain.

Go Scuba Diving!!!

300 meters above sea level, a 20 minute visit in this natural grotto to admire its beauty with stalactites and lighting display. Inhabited by the Neanderthals and visited since the time of the Romans, prepared as an emergency hospital during WWII. Today a main tourist attraction and used for concerts and social events. Barbary Apes, Introduced in 1750, at present there’s approximately 200 apes roaming free on the upper rock.” No touching or feeding allowed” as they can bite.

Gibraltar diving schools are among the best in the world today, and feature dives for the beginner, the advanced and the very experienced open water diver, as well as wreck divers. There are various diving schools that will permit you to try out your new sport, give you on site lessons, and see to it that you have all the equipment you may need to safely dive the wrecks of Gibraltar. They offer equipment rental so complete that all you need to bring with you when you arrive is a towel. If you are, however an experienced diver and you would prefer to bring your own equipment with you, there is absolutely no restriction what so ever in bringing your own diving equipment to Gibraltar with you. Gibraltar features one of the most spectacular underwater scenery in the world today, and for the diver, it features a vast array of things to see and explore. Cradle of History – A welcome monument that is shaped like the rock, showing the first skull of Neanderthal man from Gibraltar as well as other photos that show you the civilisations throughout the history of Gibraltar The Changing of the Guard – Several times daily on Gibraltar, undertaken by Gibraltar’s own Guard Company. Whale Watching in the Strait – If you’re interested in nature, then Gibraltar is one of those places that has some diverse nature to show you. Whales in the area include Humpbacks, Killer Whales, False Killer Whales and several others. Dolphin Watching – Dolphins seem to love the Gibraltar and use the area waterways as a nursery. It’s not at all uncommon to see them playing with their mothers in the waters around Gibraltar. Barbary Macaques – The Gibraltar Monkeys in other words, the last free ranging primate in Europe.

Travel INSIDERS LETS Travel

Oman has a reliably warm climate and, as long as you avoid the scorching summer months between June and August, can be visited any time. The weather is at its most pleasant from October through to April, when temperatures are warm but cooler than the sweltering summer months and turtles can be seen at Ras al Jinz. Rain is only fleeting and tends only to come in January and February as short, sharp showers. On the south coast, Salalah has a very different climate in that it has a monsoon season, called the khareef. From June to September the khareef ’s wet winds create a thick and humid fog which coats the mountains in moisture, creating luxuriant green hills. This provides ideal conditions for Salalah’s abundance of tropical fruit, which is in season throughout the year.

Motoring Roundup

The most fun you can have on two wheels 2017 Victory Octane, Victory motorcycles don’t come cheap, and practically never go south of $10,000. But that changes this year with the new Octane. Although not an all-new motorcycle—it shares quite a bit of its mechanical makeup with the Indian Scout 60. But that’s certainly not a bad thing because the Scout made our list of best buys last year. The 1200 liquid-cooled V-Twin is a modified version of what powers the Scout.

It’s also where it delivers 104 hp and 76 lb-ft of torque. The suspension has been calibrated for a sportier feel, too. Because it weighs more than 100 pounds less than Victory’s own Vegas, this lower-priced machine is also one of the quickest and most rewarding to ride in the company’s lineup. Compared to the classicallystyled Indian, the Octane looks more like a muscledup street fighter—and we certainly liking that aesthetic.

Ford Fiesta New Ford Fiesta ST hot hatch stars at Geneva with new 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo engine. Watch the video. Ford has revealed a new Fiesta ST hot hatch, based on the upcoming seventh generation version of the supermini. The biggest news is the move to an-all new engine configuration. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo used in the current car is out, replaced by a lightweight, aluminium 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo. The new motor produces 197bhp. That’s 17bhp up on the standard output of the current Fiesta ST, but equal to its ‘overboost’ figure. Torque swells from

ST - 197bhp 240Nm to 290Nm, and Ford claims that the new Fiesta ST can crack 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds – two tenths quicker than the current generation model and on par with the ST200. A top speed just above 140mph seems likely. Naturally, the downsized motor will be cleaner and more efficient than the outgoing four-cylinder. Ford reckons CO2 emissions for the new model will tumble from 138g/km to 114g/km, and with cylinder de-activation technology on-board, fuel-economy should improve too. Ford knows it’s got one of the most popular superminis and wants to build on the nameplate’s popularity, so it’s “going in hard with the new Fiesta.

Froome backs Sir Dave Brailsford

Sir Dave Brailsford has been defended by Chris Froome after the Team Sky boss admitted mistakes over anti-doping and testing practices. of records. They are investigating allegations that a package sent to the team, and used to treat Sir Bradley Wiggins, contained the banned substance triamcinolone. Brailsford said “policies and procedures” had not been complied with by some of his staff, but refuted “untrue” assumptions and assertions about

the way Team Sky operates. Froome, three-time Tour de France champion, released a statement on Monday saying: “Brailsford has created one of the best sports teams in the world. “Without Dave B, there is no Team Sky. He has supported me throughout the last seven years of my career and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities.”

BOXING STAR OF THE FUTURE by Tony Matthews

CRISTIAN HOSKINGOMEZ is an up and coming 21 year-old British middleweight boxer. Born in Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain on 24 May 1995, he is managed by Errol Johnson (Black Country Boxing), trains at Carl’s Boxing Stable in Plymouth, where he resides today, and has already had almost 30 professional fights in four years – with more planned. He has registered five wins (including one knockout), boxed out three draws while suffering 20 defeats, which sounds a lot but half were pretty close decisions which could have gone either way! As an amateur Cristian claimed eight knockouts in his ten fights before

moving up into the professional category, having his first fight in March 2014 against Swindon-born Tariq Quaddos in Wiltshire which unfortunately he lost on points. He had to wait nine months before recording his first ‘pro’ win – defeating Lancastrian Saqib Qureshi via a technical knockout in Bolton. Strong with an orthodox right-lead stance is the holder of one British Challenge Middleweight title belt which he won in October 2016 at Plymouth’s Guild Hall when he gained a 7876 points win over Guernsey’s Tom Duff. Cristian was chivalrous enough afterwards, admitting “I was lucky

to get the decision over Duff, who boxed with precision and dominated the early rounds.” Now ranked 647 (out of 1,561) in the middleweight class worldwide and 78 out of 112 in the UK, a couple of more wins can change all that for Cristian. And he knows it – so too do all his colleagues, trainers and coaches at his training camp. Christian may not make it in the end… but some of the world’s greatestever fighters didn’t reach their peak until well into their twenties. Time will tell. *Christian’s father, Nick, runs Bar Dolar at Pueblo Luguna, Vera Playa, near Mojacar in Almeria Province in Andalusia, Spain.

For some time now he has missed his beloved 24 pristine white corgis. In fact it was partly through seeing photos of them gambolling around that forced him to make this important decision. No longer will we hear his smooth and dulcet tones echoing across the field as he issued his decisions. We will miss him enormously. I can just picture him striding across the landscape in his golden loincloth and cloak of reverence practising the Welsh martial art of

On to brighter happenings. Some time ago the team changed its name from the Coffin Dodgers to Miraflores Los G. Now they are about to undergo another transformation more in keeping with their new image. A brand new name has been chosen and they are in the process of setting up a web-site which will make it much easier for potential new players to contact us. Obviously I can´t reveal those details until everything is set and ready to go but it´s really exciting so watch this space! What I can reveal is that they now train and play on Monday and Thursday from about 10.00AM on the splendid pitch outside the new

sports stadium in Los Gallardos. So if you want to start playing and meet a great bunch of likeminded people feel free to come along. You will be more than welcome. Regards to all, Bill white

England can get better

Dylan Hartley has called on England to finish the Six Nations job against Ireland and then take aim at rugby’s No 1 ranking. Eddie

Jones’ side beat Scotland 61-21 on Saturday to secure

the title and equal New Zealand’s record of 18 consecutive Test wins. Victory in Dublin on Saturday would mean the outright record and a second straight Grand Slam, but captain Hartley says England’s ambitions extend way beyond next weekend. “We have two options,” he said. “There’s failure on one side or you can kick on and get better.” “The performance against Scotland was pretty ruthless so it was a good progression for the team, but we’ve only equalled New Zealand’s record. We’d like to go one further. “Until we finish next weekend it won’t feel like we’ve won the tournament.

Wenger admits fans could force him OUT! Arsene Wenger has revealed protesting Arsenal fans could force him out of the club this summer. A section of Gunners supporters held a protest against the Frenchman before Tuesday’s Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich. The manner of the 10-2 a g g r e g a t e drubbing has only enraged the Emirates crowd further as Arsenal were embarrassed by the Germans. Wenger is thought

to have a two-year contract offer on the table and has suggested he will make a decision by no later than next month. But for the first time he has now admitted that supporter unrest will play a part in whether remains as manager in north London next season. “It will influence,” Wenger answered when asked if the disenchantment of the Arsenal faithful will come into his thinking. “It won’t be the most important factor. “I work hard for 20 years to make fans happy. When you lose, I understand they are not.”

Hart admits he may stay abroad

Joe Hart has revealed he may stay abroad, rather than return to the Premier League, after declaring his Manchester City career is already over because Pep Guardiola does not rate him as a goalkeeper. Hart was the first major casualty of Guardiola’s reign at the Etihad Stadium, forced to join Torino on a season’s loan at the end of the summer window, after he was told he would be

third choice behind new signing Claudio Bravo and Willy Caballero if he stayed in Manchester. It was a bruising experience for the England international, but he denied Guardiola had been spiteful towards him and claimed a difficult move has turned into a hugely rewarding one for him in Serie A. Torino have already made it clear they would like to sign him permanently at the end of his loan

move and, although the 29-year-old has been widely linked with a return to England and a move to Liverpool, Hart is keeping his options open. Torino want to keep hold of the 29-year-old but Sportsmail understands Hart will not rush a decision on his new employers. Hart has made 26 appearances for the Serie A outfit this term after being told by Pep Guardiola he was not in City’s plans.

Sergio Henao wins Paris-Nice

Team Sky’s Sergio Henao held on to claim a thrilling overall victory in Paris-Nice by just two seconds from Alberto Contador. Spain’s Contador attacked to drop Colombian Henao with 52km of Sunday’s eighth and final stage remaining. But he was beaten to the stage win by Quick-Step Floors’ David de la Cruz and took eight instead of 10 bonus seconds. Henao, 29, trailed by a minute at one point but chased to finish 21 seconds down and secure the yellow jersey.

HONDA´S ENGINE PROBLEMS

Late Ramos Strike

Unexpected vibrations from the Honda engine are causing McLaren’s power unit to effectively shake itself into breaking down, reports suggest. The McLarenHonda MCL32 car crawled to a halt on four different occasions over the final two days of pre-season testing at Barcelona with Honda seemingly no closer to fixing an engine which Fernando Alonso described as offering “no power and no reliability” in a withering rebuke of McLaren’s power suppliers.

Sergio Ramos’ late winner sent Real Madrid back to the top of La Liga following a 2-1 win against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night. Madrid had found themselves behind after 25 minutes following an own goal from goalkeeper Keylor Navas, the first shotstopper to put through his own net in the league this season. However, Cristiano Ronaldo equalised for Real with his first-ever goal against Betis four minutes before half-time and after right-back Cristiano Piccini had been shown a 78thminute red card, Ramos headed the home side’s winner nine minutes from time. The Madrid’s captain made no mistake with a thumping effort from close range for his 10th goal of the season. As a result, Madrid move two points ahead of Barcelona, and having played a game less than the champions. Madrid began on the front foot as they went in search of the three points that would see them return to the top of the table after Barcelona´s shock 2-1 defeat at Deportivo La Coruna earlier in the day.

Derby sack McClaren

ADAM´S RELIEF

Adam Hadwin breathed “a huge sigh of relief” after coming out on top of a tense battle with Patrick Cantlay to clinch a one-shot victory at the Valspar Championship. Hadwin had begun the final round four shots clear of the young American, but Cantlay’s superb run of five birdies in six holes from the ninth heaped huge pressure on the Canadian. Hadwin faced a tricky lie in the rear fringe, but he stroked a classy “belly wedge” to virtual tap-in range, and his cast-iron par secured his maiden PGA Tour title.

Steve McClaren has been sacked as Derby County manager for a second time, five months after he was reappointed. Derby, 10th in the Championship, said they acted following a “significant, unexpected and persistent decline in results, team unity and morale”. Rams chairman Mel Morris said: “We need a manager who shares our values and who is prepared to develop the team.” The club said they expect to make an announcement in relation to McClaren’s successor “in the next few days”.
