British Embassy appoints new Consul for Canary Islands & Andalucia
The British Embassy today (24 June) announced that Charmaine Arbouin has been appointed as British Consul for the Consulates covering the Canary Islands and Andalucia. Charmaine has more than 20 years’ experience of managing people and resources in the public and notfor-profit sectors. She was previously a consultant to local and central government organisations in the UK, specialising in public sector performance improvement. She has also developed and managed customer contact services in Nottinghamshire. She has a degree in Hispanic Studies from the University of Hull. Charmaine said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to work with the British and Spanish communities and authorities in both Andalucia and the Canaries. I am very much looking forward to building on the existing great work undertaken by the Consulates to ensure that Britons living or visiting Andalucia and the Canaries continue to receive excellent support when they most need it.” Charmaine has lived with her family in Andalucia for the last eight years, first in Alpandeire and now in Ronda. Her engagement with the Spanish public health, administrative and education systems – as an expatriate resident - has given her an insight into many of the challenges and benefits experienced by those visiting or living in Spain. Dave Thomas, Consular Regional Director for southern Europe, said: “I’m very pleased that we have managed to recruit such a high calibre new Consul. Charmaine has an impressive background in senior management and will play a strategic role in the further development
of our consular services in Spain.” The Consulates that cover southern Spain are among the busiest in the world. The new Consul will oversee the work of teams in Las Palmas, Malaga and Tenerife, who provide on-the-ground assistance to British nationals. The region covered by the Malaga office sees some five million British visitors every year, and is home to around 350,000 British residents. The Consulates in Tenerife and Las Palmas, together with the Honorary Consul in Lanazarote, serve 3.5 million British visitors and some 85,000 residents. Charmaine Arbouin replaces Steve Jones, who is now managing the Foreign Office’s global Contact Centre programme.

Most popular baby names in 2012
Lucía and Daniel were the most popular names for babies born in 2012, followed by Hugo and, of course, María, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Less-frequent names chosen for newborns last year were 479 called Guillém, and 401 each named Judith and Luna. Since last year, there are now 6,234 more Daniels in Spain and 6,363 more Lucías, and the name already found to be the most prolific among females in the country – María – was chosen by parents of 5,823 girls. Hugo was the name given to 5,984 baby boys, Alejandro to another 5,744 and Pablo to 5,658, whilst 5,375 baby girls were named Paula and 4,748 called Daniela. Other names seen in high numbers of newborn boys were Álvaro, Ádrian, David, Diego, Mario, Javier and Marcos, followed by between 2,000 and 3,000 named Sergio, Nicolás, Iker, Lucas, Iván, Carlos, Miguel, Jorge, Martín, Marc, Álex, Mateo, Gonzalo, and Izan. Thousands of little girls born last year were named Sara, Carla, Martina, Sofía, Julia, Alba, Valeria, Claudia, Irene, Marta, Laura, Noa, Carmen, Adriana, Ainhoa, Elena, Ana, Aitana, Emma and Alejandra. The least-common names for baby boys born in 2012 were Mikel, Jon, Gael, Yeray, Omar, Adriá, César, Yago and Francisco Javier. And the most infrequently-seen girls’ names given to babies born last year were Irati, Ona, Arlet, Chloe, Lidia, Ane, Jana, Iris, Nadia, Diana, Malak, Salma and Nahia. Last year, a total of 453,637 babies were born in Spain, a fall of 3.9 per cent on 2011 and the fourth year running in which the birth-rate has dropped. The INE believes this is related to the recession, with unemployment or lack of job security meaning women do not want to risk becoming mothers, as well as fewer women in Spain of childbearing age, and lower fertility levels of those who are. As in previous years, the reason the birth-rate has not fallen even more is because of foreign mothers having children, particularly those from Arab countries and from Latin America although also, in smaller numbers, European women.

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
Longest Summer So Far Of The 21st Century Started Friday At 07.04hrs
Last Friday saw the start of the longest summer in Spain in many years, having officially began at 07.04hrs Spanish time and continuing until September 22. This means summer 2013 will last for a full 93 days and 15 hours, giving an excellent boost to tourism as sunseekers have longer than ever to enjoy their holidays in Spain. The so-called longest day of the year – with 15 hours and three minutes of daylight in Madrid, compared to the shortest day which has just nine hours and 17 minutes, and is normally on December 21 – is never on the same date ever year, says the National Geographic Institute (IGN). Over the course of the 21st century, the latest start to the summer will be – and was – in 2003, compared to the earliest, which will be in 2096. The start of the astrological summer falls between June
20 and 22 in the northern hemisphere and is when the sun is at its most northern point, although in practice the ‘official’ start to the summer varies considerably from country to country and, by the same token, the ‘official’ start to the winter in the southern hemisphere does not necessarily occur on the ‘shortest’ day in June. In south-eastern Australia, the summer starts officially on December 1 and winter on July 1, whilst in Perú the summer is considered to start just before Christmas. And in practice, given that the earth orbits the sun at an angle, during the summer and winter solstices, the longest and shortest days are not necessarily on the day of the astrological start to either season. At both these points in the year, the time shown on the clock is out of synch with the ‘actual’ time as shown by the sun’s position – in 2013, the sun came up the earliest on June 14, and will set the latest on June 27. Between the tropics and particularly on the equator, there is no difference year-round between sun-up and sundown time, and little change in temperature, with no official summer or winter – merely a dry season and a rainy season, lasting typically six months at a time. And the extremes of longest and shortest days happen in the Arctic and Antarctic circles – today will see 24 hours of daylight in the North Pole and 24 hours of darkness in the South Pole.

Spain’s national anthem acquired lyrics for the first time during the Confederations Cup match against Uruguay, thanks to the BBC. La Marcha Real, or ‘Royal March’, is instrumental, but when the British Broadcasting Corporation televised the opening ceremony of Spain’s first Cup match they gave it lyrics with subtitles in English. The words were those written by Paulino Cubero, who was chosen by the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) in 2007 so that sportsmen and women from the country could sing their own national anthem rather than just humming it. But the idea never took off and the lyrics never aired in public. They included lines such as “love your land because it knows how to embrace, beneath blue skies, people at liberty,” which were shown in English subtitles – and Spanish subtitles for
Europe Sends Written Warning To Spain Over Sevilla-Almería High-speed Train
European Commissioners have sent Spain written notice over its alleged breach of EU law concerning the Sevilla-Almería high-speed rail-link. The Commission says the Spanish government has approved the plans for the AVE train across the south of the country without having firstly carried out an ‘environmental impact study’, which is compulsory under European Union law. According to the CE, the AVE will cut through an area of countryside home to endangered species of birds, and would destroy their habitat completely. They have given Spain two months to carry out the study or shelve the plans.
‘Catastrophic’ & ‘Out Of Control’: Floods In Huesca & Lleida Force Hundreds Of Evacuations
Hundreds of residents in the northern regions of Aragón and Catalunya have been evacuated from their homes as torrential rain causes flash flooding and rivers to burst their banks. The worst of the damage is near the Pyrénées and 400 people have been forced to flee their homes in the Aran Valley and in Pallars Sòbira, both in the province of Lleida, Catalunya. Roads have been blocked off, bridges brought down and homes awash, although luckily as yet nobody has been injured. Several hundred more have been evacuated in the province of Huesca, Aragón, after the river Ésera burst its banks due to a combination of the snow and ice melting and torrential rain, leading to floods in the towns of Castejón de Sos and Benasque. Authorities in the Aran Valley say the situation is ‘absolutely out of control’ and the damage has reached catastrophic proportions. They say they are ‘doing all they can’, but that the district is now ‘divided’ into three areas by the floods with each one being totally inaccessible.
Although no fatalities have been reported, mobile phone users have no signal, homes on either side of the river Garona have been evacuated and the main national trunk road is ‘an extension of the river itself’. Over 4,000 homes have no electricity and numerous villages are completely isolated, with one of them having lost three bridges which were swept away by the river Noguera Pallaressa. A camp site has also been emptied of tourists, the industrial estate in Vielha closed and schools in the town forced to shut. School buses are not running and authorities urge residents not to leave their homes or use their cars. Water is even expected to come down from above as well as rising up – dams high up on mountains are threatening to overflow. A building has collapsed in Benasque (Huesca) and the council fears a block of flats may be next. They say the bridge over the Benasque-Anciles road is likely to come down at any minute.
those picking up the BBC in Spain and Latin America – across the faces of the 11 members of Vicente del Bosque’s team, ‘The Reds’. This unusual twist to the Marcha Real immediately went viral on Twitter. One user stated that the Spanish national anthem
was ‘brief, profound and full of strength’ and that it did not have lyrics because it did ‘not come from the mouth, but from the heart’. Another user tweeted: “I though the lyrics for our national anthem were ‘loo loo lo lo lolololo’?”

Spain takes action against Google on privacy
Spain led a Europe-wide push yesterday to get Google to change its policies on collecting user data.
According to Tumbit. com, Reuters reported that the U.S. National Security Agency under the Prism surveillance program secretly gathered user data from 9 U.S. companies, including Google, to track people’s movements and contacts makes the timing especially sensitive for Google. France’s data protection watchdog (CNIL) said Google had broken French law and gave it 3 months to change its privacy policies or risk a fine of up to €150,000. Spain’s Data Protection Agency (AEPD) told Google it would be fined between €40,000 and €300,000 for each of the 5 violations of the law, that it had failed to be clear about what it did with data, may be processing a “disproportionate” amount and holding onto it for an “undetermined or unjustified” period of time. The CNIL, which has been leading Europe’s inquiry since Google launched
its consolidated privacy policy in March 2012, said Britain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands would be taking similar action against the world’s No. 1 search engine.
Google could face fines totaling several million euros. “By the end of July, all the authorities within the (EU data protection) task force will have taken coercive action against Google,” said CNIL President Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin. Last year, Google consolidated its 60 privacy policies into one and started combining data collected on individual users across its services, including YouTube, Gmail and social network Google+. It gave users no means to opt out. National data protection regulators in Europe began a joint inquiry as a result. They gave Google until February to propose changes but it did not make any. Google had several meetings with the watchdogs and argued that combining its policies made it easier for users to
understand.
The CNIL’s move is seen by legal experts and policymakers as a test of Europe’s ability to influence the behavior of international Internet companies. The UK is still considering whether its law has been broken and will write to Google soon with its findings, the CNIL said. And Google is due to answer allegations on the issue in a German court hearing late next week, a spokesman for the country’s data protection regulator said. Google said it would continue to work with the authorities in France and elsewhere. “Our privacy policy respects European law and allows us to create simpler, more effective services. We have engaged fully with the authorities involved throughout this process, and we’ll continue to do so going forward,” a spokesman said by email.

12 Months today since “Corvera open by October” Promise
12 months ago, the ‘Tumbit’ website reported the comments of the Regional Minister for Toursism for Murcia, when he made yet another guarantee concerning the date of operation for Corvera International Airport. On the 16th 2012 Antonio Sevilla reiterated the comments made by President Valcarcel earlier in the week, when he announced that Corvera Airport would be operational by October 2012. The Minister refuse to name a specific date due
to the complexity of a number of issues - such as reclassifying the airspace around the airport. Since then an number of futher revise deadlines have been quoted, however conflict between the private owners of the Airport (Aeromur), the Regional Government, the Spanish Airport authority (AENA), and the Ministries of Defence and Development, has resulted in little progress being made to open the facility.
Following on from the previous news story concerning the passing of 12 Months since the announcement that ‘Corvera Airport will be operational by October 2012’, it can only be described as a sad irony and bitter coincidence that the (almost) exact set of circumstances exists up the road at Castellon Airport. Perhaps nothing more than an arrogant display of competitiveness and regional pride, but on the 13th of June 2012 the (then) President of Aerocas - the concession holder of Castellon Airport - announced that the facility would be operational before the end of the year. Fabra also offered further details, noting how he was in negotiations with a company who would bring “1’000 Aircraft per year” to the
Airport. A notable quote from the press conference given by Fabra at the time noted that “only the useless and incompetent are the ones who are against an infrastructure that is absolutely crucial to the development of the province”. In the 12 Months since the statement Fabra has resigned and been replaced in his role by the Deputy President for the Generalitat Valenciana, Jose Ciscar, and the Director of the Airport, Juan Garcia Salas, has been relieved of his position. Again, with striking parallels with Corvera, Castellon Airport remains unopened and with no date in sight when operations might commence. (tumbit.com)

forwarded to the Arbitration Committee, and 73 verdicts in favour of the customers have been passed, meaning they can ask for their money back with immediate effect and their request for it cannot be refused. Thousands of savers signed contracts for preferential and ordinary share purchases in the banks which now fall under the umbrella of the newlynationalised entity without realising – many thought they were putting their names on the dotted line to open deposit accounts or even just to withdraw funds already held. In numerous cases, the customers had no knowledge of financial matters and frequently had limited education, and many were elderly. Whilst some claim they were
blatantly lied to, others say they were simply not given the full facts or that they trusted their regular bank managers to look after them. It is thought there may have been a few who knew exactly what they were doing by dabbling in the stock market and are claiming they were mis-sold now that their investment plans did not go as they had hoped, but most appear to have been either completely unaware of what was happening or else did not have the risks involved explained to them. When the banks in question were on the verge of collapse and subsequently bailed out by the State using EU funds, the shares were zeroed and became completely worthless, meaning their holders lost every cent.

The Friday Tapas Group enjoyed a lovely afternoon by the Oasis on Friday 12st June! It was the very first time that the group had visited Chiringito ‘Bar Oasis’ on one of their regular Friday meetings and sixteen members enjoyed some excellent tapas served up by Andres and Diana, and the Chef! The group also welcomed Jenny and Royce from Australia, during their World tour! Royce is the cousin of Barry (El Baz) one of the group members and they are only in Roquetas De Mar for a few days. Jenny stated that she was very much looking forward to sampling some of the delightful tapas that Roquetas had to offer and, was probably one of the highlights of the trip. They move on to Vancouver, Canada next week, where they will meet up with their daughter, Caitlin. Good luck and Bon Voyage from the FTG!

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
PHOTOS by Martin Shortland news update ReportsA&Dolphin Losses Its Life
11
Despite Rescue Bid
It was almost a year ago when I reported the dramatic events which unfolded near the harbour entrance of Roquetas. A baby dolphin – later named Marcos – was struggling for life near the beach and after hours of gentle coaxing, a team of marine experts from the wildlife organisation Promar, managed to rescue the young animal. That was just the beginning of a story which would last for six months and involve a round the clock operation requiring all the attention of a dedicated team of dozens of volunteers. The emotional day to day events surrounding ‘Marcos the Dolphin’ swept around the world on social media sites and he became a media star. He spent the first three weeks being treated in a large sea water pen near the harbour wall – he was undernourished, dehydrated, infested with parasites and close to death. He was so weak, he couldn’t swim and had to be supported by two people,
day and night. He received a cocktail of drugs to fight a kidney infection as well as his other ailments and was hand fed fish from the local quay. After moving to a quieter location in Almerimar, his health slowly improved – he gained weight, he swam and dived and when the mood took him, would even feed himself! But an underlying worry remained; whenever the vets tried to lower the dosage of drugs, his health deteriorated. Plans to release Marcos could never be contemplated unless he became 100% fit. Sadly, the story didn’t have a happy ending, because in February this year, Marcos died. And almost a year on, another dolphin turned up one morning last week close to the spot where Marcos had first been sighted; the circumstances were very different though. This was a large mature animal and it was clearly in distress and hardly able to swim. Members of the local inshore rescue service attended the animal from

a boat and three vets from Promar got into the water with it. Their plan was to bring it into calm waters near the harbour, as they had with Marcos, in order to carry out an examination. The dolphin became weaker and after an hour it died in the water. A harness was put around it and the team managed to lift it out onto the beach where they carried out a preliminary examination. It was a 10 - 15 year old female bottle nose dolphin, over four metres in length and weighing over 800 kilos. She had severe parasitic infestation and a lot of scaring to the body as well as a nasty mouth wound, either caused by a boats propeller or an attack by a shark. The police cordoned off the area while the examination was carried out and then waited for a council bulldozer to come and transport the animal to a lorry. It was taken to the Promar veterinary laboratory in Almeria where a full post mortem examination will be carried out.

boost your Vitamin D levels WITH PROBIOTICS for nine weeks. They tested levels of Vitamin D by monitoring levels of 25hydroxyvitamin D in the blood. Vitamin D levels are of increasing concern as the numbers of children developing rickets, and the number of adults developing osteoporosis, increases. Insufficient Vitamin D contributes to these conditions by reducing calcium absorption, and by in turn weakening the bones. Researchers are also beginning to discover links between Vitamin D levels and protection against heart disease, autoimmune diseases and diabetes. A variety of factors may reduce Vitamin D absorption, including limited exposure to sunlight, dark skin, obesity, and problems with absorption

Probiotic supplements help to boost Vitamin D levels, according to new research. According to a study by Mail Online, a study found that a taking a probiotic supplement boosted levels of the vitamin by more than 25 per cent. It is the first evidence that probiotics play a role in maintaining levels of the bone-strengthening nutrient. Previous studies have shown the effect of the particular strain of a probiotic, called Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242, on cholesterol reduction, but its effect on the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin D was unknown. Researchers investigated the effects of the probiotics after a supplement had been taken by a group of adults

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
noche de san juan SO WHAT WAS IT ALL ABOUT??? The traditional midsummer party in Spain is the celebration in honour of San Juan (St. John the Baptist). It celebrates the arrival of the summer solstice and is celebrated on the shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere and signals the triumph of light over dark. It is a celebration that is usually held on the beach with roaring bonfires, drink, food and friends. The basic characteristics of the ritual are fire, water and the sun. According to tradition, if people jump over a bonfire three times on San Juan’s night, they will be cleansed and purified, and their problems burned away. Jumping in the sea at midnight is supposed to be a way to wash away evil spirits. After midnight people wash their faces and feet three times in order to be granted three wishes and a happy year ahead. Bathing at this time is also said to be beneficial for skin complaints. Another tradition, especially for women, requires the women of the house to prepare perfumed water combining the scents of seven plants - among them rosemary, roses and laurel - and to bathe or wash their faces in the water, again to purify themselves for the new season. As well as the bonfires that burn continuously, there are also muñecos or dolls that are burnt. This is usually done around midnight. Originally, the effigies were supposed to represent Judas Iscariot but now, the religious relevance seems to have become secondary to the enjoyment factor!

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com
Q: I have a mortgage variable mortgage with BBVA with a minimum interest clause in my mortgage of 3.5% What do I have to do to have the minimum interest clause removed so that I can take advantage of the all time low interest rates?
A . Nothing. The BBVA bank in result of the sentence by our supreme court dated 09/05/2013 has decided to remove all clauses of minimum interest and apply the differential above the euribor with no consideration to the minimum clause. In practice this will mean that if you have have a variable mortgage of for example euribor + 1%, which is average, you will now pay aprox. 1.5% interest instead of 3.5%, which is the minimum interest clause that they introduced into your mortage document. They will remove all minimum interest clauses with effect from the 9th of May. Position of other banks since the sentence: Cajamar: The same position as BBVA. NCG Banco: The same as BBVA. Banco Popular(Banco de Andalucia):In principle they say that they will not be removing the clause. Banc Sabadell: The same as Banco Popular. Kutxabank: The same as Banco Popular. Bankinter : They are not affected as they claim they have never introduced this clause in their mortgages. Santander: The same as Bankinter. I recommend taking a look at your mortgage. If the clause is included and the bank does not remove it automatically, speak to your bank manager about it being removed.

Navy to use sea-lions for water rescue operations
21st June to 12th July
Granada International Festival of Music & Dance ...head to this years International Festival of Music and Dance in Granada!
The Festival plunges the city, and the visitor, into an atmosphere of celebration! Held in the exquisite setting of Granada’s Alhambra, the Generalife Gardens, monasteries and the cathedral, around the Alhambra and all over the city the streets are filled with the sound of Spanish guitars, the click of castanets, the whirl of flamenco dancing and much, much more.
History The ‘Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada’ dates back to the symphonic concerts performed at the Palace of Charles V during the Corpus Christi holidays since 1883 and the “Cante Jondo” (flamenco singing) Contest convened at the Alhambra in 1922 by García Lorca, Falla and other intellectuals and artists. Since 1952, it has become known not only for the talent on display, but also for the extraordinary settings where concerts and performances are held. The history of the Festival is linked to the landscape and to the main monuments of Granada. Its stages are to be found all over the city: to the traditional settings in the Alhambra - Patio de los Arrayanes, Palace of Charles V, Gardens of Generalife, the Cathedral
or the Monastery of San Jerónimo, other, not less singular, settings have been added, like the Corral del Carbón, the Hospital Real, the Palace of Daralhorra, the Manuel de Falla Auditorium, the Albaicín and Sacromonte districts and, most recently, the Planetarium in the Science Centre and even some nearby villages.
The Performances The programme of the Festival is traditionally based on classical music, ballet and Spanish dancing, but together with this classical repertoire it also attracts more contemporary music and exhibitions. The more than 60 performances are offered – the invitation to enjoy music and dance at very diverse hours of the day & night and in a variety of manners, ranging from conventional concerts for very large audiences to recitals almost in intimacy, and from polyphony matinees during weekends to very late flamenco shows finishing in the small hours – is what makes this festival unique. Enjoyed by thousands of visitors and locals and, through RNE - the Spanish National Radio - and other Euroradio broadcasting stations, by numerous music lovers all over Europe.

The Spanish Navy is planning to use sea-lions for rescue missions. They have chosen sea-lions over dolphins, since they say the ‘logistics’ of the former are simpler, and they can be used in both salt water and fresh water. Also, as they are amphibians, they can be used on dry land. Searching for submerged objects and people, the recovery of lost property, ships, other devices and humans, and also saving humans in trouble in water are among the new tasks sea-lions will perform. They will be able to tow people and items to the surface, assist divers, help inspect boats, ports, oil and gas pipes.

Only female sea-lions will be used, since they weigh less than their male counterparts and are easier to lift onto and off boats. They will form part of various ‘Quick Find’ teams, involving two to three Naval officers and one sea-lion. The animals will be supplied by Valencia’s Oceanogràfic, an aquarium among the largest in Spain and a popular tourist attraction based in the stateof-the-art City of Arts and Sciences. Overseen by vets experts in sealions, the operation will have an initial cost of 50,000 euros and annual running costs of 180,000 euros in staff, food for the animals, investigation and veterinary care, among other elements.

Report & PHOTOS by Martin Shortland
Hotel Chain Announces Branding Change
The largest hotel chain in the municipality and one of the most powerful in Andalucia has introduced sweeping new changes to its image. The Playa Senator Group owns a number of hotels throughout the region and is launching the new business model to bring its operation into line with current trends in customer care. The ‘all inclusive’ hotel deal is used by many groups and this is one of the changes the chain will be making. The first hotel in the area to receive the new treatment is the Playa Azul in the Urbanisation, now renamed as the Diverhotel Roquetas. The changes have been prompted by the groups success in its Caribbean network, where ‘all inclusive’ holidays have become very popular. According to Commercial Director of the company Daniel Rossel,
the key is in the self service element, “which allows us to offer extremely good value at reasonable prices.” He stressed they were not moving into the low cost market, but responding to the demands of more affluent customers who liked this style of holiday. Many
other hotel chains operating in the region are moving towards this style of business, which effectively means the guest never has to leave the premises as everything is included in the price of their accommodation. Many local bar restaurant owners
and have
suffered as a consequence and there would seem to be no way of combating this new and aggressive trend in holiday marketing. Most of the large hotels in the area are reporting lower occupancy figures this year compared to last year, although numbers of foreign visitors are slightly higher. Hotels are also reporting an increase in the amount of last minute bookings, perhaps reflecting the fact customers are now shopping around a lot more to find the best deals. These numbers (of foreign tourists) are expected to increase even more next month, following the introduction this year of eight new tour operators using Almeria airport. The new routes are from Serbia, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, The Czech Republic, Norway, Bulgaria and Russia. Because of this, The Almeria Tourist Authority is hoping as many as 50,000 extra tourists could visit the region during the summer.
UK Inheritance Ta x News If you are a British domicile, and many British expatriates are, UK inheritance tax is charged on your worldwide estate. Non-domiciles are liable on assets situated in the UK. The current tax free “nil rate band” is £325,000 per individual. Nil r ate band frozen for longer As announced in the Budget, the threshold will be frozen until at least 2018. It has already been frozen since 2010. It would normally increase each year in line with inflation, so this is effectively a tax rise; tax bills will be higher and more families drawn into the tax net. Spouses of different domiciles Transfers from a UK domiciled spouse to one who is a non-domicile do not benefit from the spousal exemption. Spouses only received an extra £55,000 tax free amount.
With effect from 6th April 2013 this increased to match the nil rate band. The total that can be transferred tax free is therefore now £650,000. Non-UK domiciled individuals married to/in a civil partnership with UK domiciles can now elect to be treated as a UK domicile. Deductibility of loans Loans are generally deducible from an estate for inheritance tax purposes, but there are changes on the way. Any outstanding debts at death will be scrutinised by HM Revenue & Customs. If heirs cannot demonstrate that there is a commercial reason to retaining that debt, it will not create a reduction in the value of the estate. Loans taken out to purchase assets not subject to inheritance tax will not be deductible. Where a loan was incurred to
2013 ‘A Pie De Calle’ Schedule Bigger Than Ever
The town mayor, Gabriel Amat was present at the Santa Ana castle last week, when details of this years ‘A Pie De Calle’, or ‘Street View’ were unveiled. Now in its thirteenth year, the organisers promise over 120 acts performing in seven venues during July and August. The councillor for culture, Maria Dolores Ortega stressed that this years programme was based on quality, diversity and variety, and as always entertainment for children came high on their list of priorities. The list of events is certainly wide ranging, from childrens magic shows, to theatre, comedy, film screenings, traditional music, rock and pop. She said, “We include all branches of the arts and bring them to the seven stages across the municipality.” As in the past, the two traditional markets will take place in the romantic setting of the castle; the Sailors market in July and the Medieval market in August. Four of Spains most well known pop groups are also booked to appear – Auryn 5th July, Apache 2nd August, Nacha Pop 9th August and Melocos 16th August. A particular favourite of mine is the Almeriblues night, this year being held on 19th July at the Lighthouse, with four bands booked to appear. A number of classical music evenings will take place in the Santa Ana castle as well as a full list of events in the adjacent amphitheatre. A full programme of all the events taking place this year can be obtained from the information centre at the Santa Ana castle, or by going to apiedecalle.org

San Juan Solstice Celebrations In Roquetas
The Romanilla beach was packed with thousands of people on Sunday night, celebrating the Summer Solstice. Many people started preparing for the celebrations in the early afternoon, transporting loads of wood, tables, chairs, BBQ’s, food and drink. It’s estimated over 25,000 people filled the beach between Roquetas and Aguadulce to share in this quite amazing night. Live bands performed on a stage in the park close to the beach and many of the local bars had DJ’s on the terraces. Once darkness fell, the fires were lit and roared well into the night with revellers cooking, drinking, singing and dancing. The ritual of celebrating the shortest night goes back to pagan times, when the power of the sea was harnessed by the power of fire. The local police, fire brigade, Red Cross and civil protection organisation were all out in force to ensure the night passed safely. When the last people finally moved off the beach in the early hours, the council moved in with a well organised cleanup operation. 150 men, 16 trucks, 12 shovel loaders and 7 tractors ensured that by the time the first sun seekers arrived with their towels on Monday, all signs of the previous nights party had gone.

kilometre out. El Torcal Nature Reserve attracts many visitors with the large variety of exquisite natural sights it has to offer. Andalusian mountain goats; ladder and Montpellier snakes; spine-foot lizards; Griffin vultures and other birdlife; a wealth of different flora and fauna – all only briefly sum up some of the inhabitants that are here. Three set hiking trails and a range of rock climbing routes are also another activity
enjoyed by visitors, who are motivated by the spectacular views found over Málaga valley, and even views to Morocco on clear days. A good pair of walking shoes or trainers should be worn in the reserve, and due to the extreme temperatures, El Torcal is recommended as best visited during the spring or autumn. If visiting during the summer months, bringing plenty of water and sunscreen is highly advisable.
Man tackles escaped pause for thought bull to the ground A bull on the loose was wrestled to the ground by a man after the animal charged at him in a Spanish street. The dramatic video shows the young bull ramming into a car before turning its attention to the man, who happened to be wearing red. Luckily, he avoided being gored by the bull, which had escaped from a livestock pen in Malaga, and tackled it to the ground before being helped by witnesses. Nobody was injured and the bull is believed to have been unharmed, reports The Telegraph.
Sat nav leads OAPs onto wrong ferry
Two West Yorkshire pensioners nearly missed their oceangoing ferry to Spain - when their sat nav led them onto a tiny river crossing instead. Bob and Pat Banks, both in their 70s, hoped to join 2,415 fellow passengers for a 20-hour sea trip from Plymouth to Santander. But instead of boarding the plush, ten-deck, 41,000-ton ship, they ended up on the Torpoint Ferry for a six-minute, 650-metre hop across the Tamar from Devon to Cornwall. By the time they twigged, their car was jammed in by others on the £1.50 open-deck service, reports The Sun. Mr Banks, from Leeds, said: “We were held up and got to Plymouth only 40 minutes before departure, so were relieved when our sat nav announced we’d reached our destination. “When the truth dawned we had to accept the worst. I felt very embarrassed.” Staff put them on the first trip back and a mystery driver on the service kindly guided Bob and Pat to their Brittany Ferries ship which they caught with seconds to spare. Torpoint Ferry boss Rod Sugden said: “This has happened before. Sat navs tend to lead you to us rather than the Channel ferry port.”
Last September, two friends holidaying with us got engaged at Aljambra in Granada, so we weren’t too surprised to receive an invite to their wedding, held in Lancashire on 15th June. Flights were booked early to avoid problems and we duly set off. Alicante, when checked in, however, seemed even more chaotic than usual, with destination boards glowing red with a mix of delays and cancellations, giving strength to the rumour that the French Air Traffic Controllers had decided to strike from Tuesday until Thursday; causing almost total closure of French airspace, affecting all aircraft flying over France. We, in fact were lucky, and managed to leave a mere 6 hours late, but friends heading for the same wedding, booked on a later flight, had to wait several days and only just got there in time. But in many ways we were the fortunate ones. We had homes in Spain and would merely miss a wedding if no flights were to become available. But it was heartbreaking to see young families on holiday struggling to find alternative flights home and having to pay for accommodation they really couldn’t afford, whilst airlines, understandably in many respects, explained they were not obliged to offer aid as the disruption was not of their making. How cruel that, however reasonable or otherwise their complaint may be, so small a group of people in France should be able to hold so many to ransom, and cause so much unnecessary suffering, merely to reinforce their argument! There certainly seemed little evidence that they loved their neighbours as themselves. And as they apparently so despised this second command, one can only wonder if they had any more regard for the first – to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength. But before be criticise them too much, perhaps we should challenge ourselves as to whether our love is, in all reality, any more evident than theirs, whilst thanking God that He never goes on strike. Can you imagine the chaos that would cause? Further information about the Anglican Church and details of forthcoming events may be seen on the web site www. mojacarchurch.org . Said to have been formed some 150 million years ago back in the Jurassic period, El Torcal Nature Reserve lies around 30 kilometres from the city of Málaga, just outside Antequera. The limestone mountain ranges cover an area of about 17 square kilometres, made up of columns, stone slabs, and also a number of caves, including the ‘Cueva del Toro’ (Cave of the Bull), which contains a unique discovery of Neolithic artefacts. The reserve, unusually beautiful in its own right, was entirely under sea those 150 million years ago. Following vigorous movements of the earth’s crust, it created a huge crevice in the landscape along with horizontal layers, hills and mountains, reaching up to 1300 metres high. Over time, these mountainous rocks have formed artistically abstract

Harvest Your Herbs
Your herb garden is looking fabulous, so how can you preserve them for use in the kitchen all year round? Air drying herbs is not only the easiest and least expensive way to dry fresh herbs, but this slow drying process also doesn’t deplete the herbs of their oils. This process works best with herbs that don’t have high moisture content, like Bay, Dill, Marjoram, Oregano, Rosemary and Thyme. Moisture dense herbs, like Basil, Chives, Mint, Tarragon preserve better in a dehydrator, or try freezing them. Only use a microwave or oven to dry herbs as a last resort as these actually cook the herbs to a degree, diminishing the oil content and flavour.
When To Harvest... Harvest before flowering
If you’ve been harvesting all season, your plants probably haven’t had a chance to flower. But non-hardy herbs will start to decline as the weather cools, so late summer is a good time to begin drying your herbs. Cut in mid-morning
Pick before the plants are wilting in the afternoon sun.
How To Dry Herbs... Cut healthy branches from your herb plants. Remove any dry or diseased leaves Shake gently to remove and insects. If necessary, rinse with cool water and pat well dry with paper towels. Wet herbs will mould and rot.
band. The bundles will shrink as they dry and the rubber band will loosen, so check periodically they the bundle is not slipping. Make small bundles if you are trying to dry herbs with high water content. Punch or cut several holes in a paper bag. Label the bag with the name of the herb you are drying. Place the herb bundle upside down into the bag. Gather the ends of the bag around the bundle and tie closed. Make sure the herbs are not crowded inside the bag.

Your herbs will retain more flavour is you store the leaves hole and crush them when you are ready to use them. Discard any dried herbs that show the slightest sign of mould. Place containers in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
Remove the lower leaves along the bottom inch or so of the branch.
Dried herbs are best used within a year. As your herbs loose their colour, they are also loosing their flavour.
Bundle 4 - 6 branches together and tie as a bunch. You can use string or a rubber
Use about 1 teaspoon crumbled dried leaves in place of a tablespoon of fresh.

Charity Day 19th June at Y Da Wakes, Roquetas De Mar, in aid of Help For Heroes Wednesday 6th June saw a full day of activities at Y Da Wakes in Roquetas De Mar in aid of Help for Heroes. The day started off with a table top sale of teddies, books, cakes (the total proceeds of which were donated to Help for Heroes) and other items which was well attended. There was also a grand raffle, a “guess the number of golf balls in the box”, “play your cards right” and the sale of Help for Heroes wristbands. The grand raffle star prize of an Amazon Kindle was won by holiday maker Pippa Crew. At lunchtime everyone enjoyed a BBQ followed by “Roquetas’ Got Talent” competition. The winner was Alan Kenny (pictured here) whose prize was a leading spot at Manhattans the following Sunday. The judges were “Simon Cowell”, “Scary Spice” and “Hulk Hogan” but the decision on the winner was made by the public. The compere for the day was Brian, joined later by Paco, who entertained with his music and encouraged everyone to take part in the activities. A total of 625 Euros was raised for Help For Heroes on the day and Yvonne and Dave, Y Da Wakes, would like to thank everyone who participated in making the day both enjoyable and extremely successful. Violeta the Galgo....................... cruelly abandoned
Terrible cruelty is inflicted on Galgos, Spanish Greyhounds. They are used for racing and for hunting, but if they get injured they are callously disposed of without a thought for their welfare. If they are not abandoned they can be hanged and left to die. Violeta is a case in point of abandonment. She is a young female Galgo, born in June 2010. She is a very gentle, intelligent and curious dog. She is also very affectionate. She was found abandoned close to the shelter with a broken hind leg and unable to move. She had to have two operations and was subsequently immobilised for months in a cage until the bones had healed. This ordeal she had to endure has now paid off and she has completely recovered. She will suffer no consequences and in fact she sprints about at an amazing speed. Throughout the long recovery period she was cared for at a foster home where she still lives at present. She gets along quite well with the other dogs who taught her to bark and she has been converted into something of a guardian dog. Violeta appreciates comfort and always surrounds herself with cushions and is a real family dog. There is a campaign to get a European law passed that will prevent and punish mistreatment of the Galgos , Spanish greyhounds. Action is so badly needed to help these animals. The following link takes you to the information about this campaign: http://sosgalgos.com/?p=16024 There is also good news from the shelter. Otto the Dalmatian has been adopted by a Spanish family as is Rocky the German Shepherd mix with an amputated front leg. He had previously been adopted by a couple in Cadiz late last summer. He was returned to the shelter when the couple split up. Fortunately he was adopted again after just a couple of days back in the dog shelter. He is going to live in a cortijo very shortly. Moby is already in Germany and Fernando is leaving this week for his new home in Germany. Kinara and one of the Tomato puppies are booked to travel there in mid July and Kinara is going to be scanned and will receive adequate treatment in Germany. Berry is booked for his trip to his forever home there in September. The SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR will always be happy to see you so you can meet these lovely animals and hopefully adopt one. more thorough going over when necessary is more my way. Such simplicity should mean that As our house rose gradually from the virgin bedrock we were able to say it is hard to lose things. However, I pretty much how we wanted it to be. have lost a sparkly necklace. This is a With the memory of years of Saturdays small object, and easy to mislay, but spent pushing a vacuum cleaner how can I now have lost my entire into obscure corners in odd shaped wardrobe of swimsuits – all 3 of rooms and up stairs we specified that them? I discovered my loss when the we wanted it to have the minimum number of rooms with the minimum sudden arrival of summer tempted me number of corners and definitely no to dip a toe carefully into the pool. My toe announced that it was safe stairs! Thus our house is small and simple –it for the rest of the body to follow it is an easy house, both in concept and without danger of hypothermia, so care; even though retirement means I went in search of a swimsuit – I felt that I could, if I wanted, spend all day that I had reached both the age and and every day cleaning, that is never the dimensions that make a swimsuit going to happen! a more appropriate choice than a A perfunctory bikini. I went straight to the swimsuit drawer, whipround with the duster, and a but it was as bare as Old Mother Hubbard’s cupboard. not only not there, but not anywhere else either. Since that day I have searched diligently in all the places both likely and unlikely, but I remain swimsuitless – I am having to swim in a bikini, and anyone who comes to call unexpectedly will be pardoned for thinking that we have invited a Beluga whale to holiday with us! However, I think I know what has happened - we have been selectively burgled! There is a legend told by the old folk of a ghost, a White Lady, who roams Limaria in an eternal but fruitless search for her lover. It is said that he was lured away into the mountains and killed by brigands on the eve of their wedding, but that his heartbroken bride seeks him still at the full moon. I reckon that she has stepped up her search, and is now doing her roaming wearing a sparkly necklace and dressed in a swimsuit!
A Good Breakfast is Half the Battle
English history fascinates me and although I could never go head to head with Tarquin EllisonChitty on University Challenge (Scargill College Barnsley, reading: Historical Novels and Lady Jane Grey’s tea leaves), I was nevertheless aware that earlier in June; we saw the 368th anniversary of the Battle of Naseby. Now I know to some this will elicit a reaction that closely resembles the sound of duhhhhwosdat? But for others who have an interest in these things or who were lucky enough to have real history lessons at school, they will know that Naseby was a battle fought between the Royalist and Parliamentarian forces on the 14th June 1645; during the first of the series of armed conflicts collectively known as the English civil war, In fact Naseby was pivotal in the outcome of the war, with the battle marking an overwhelming victory for Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army and leading indirectly to the final demise of King CharlesI four years later The process that led to Naseby started in May, when Charles and his army prepared to attack the
Parliamentarians who were laying siege to Chester. Unfortunately for Charlie, the Roundheads were having none of it and took off before the opposing force could engage, blowing raspberries and shouting rude words at their adversaries as they went. Thoroughly miffed, Charles now turned his attention to Leicester where there was stationed only a miserable two thousand Parliamentarian soldiers. Miserable because, if anything, Leicester was even more depressing than Chester and so predictably, the city easily fell to the colourfully dressed and sweet smelling Cavaliers. Leicester 0 : Royalists 1. This was worrying for Cromwell’s lot and so, after leaving Oxford, which they had laid siege to, the Parliamentarians under General Fairfax advanced north to meet the Royalists and camped close to the Northamptonshire village of Naseby. Under normal circumstances the battle would have started at dawn, but it was a foggy morning with zero visibility. There had already been a bloody encounter with a flock of sheep and a scarecrow before both sides realized that trying to locate the enemy was pointless. Fairfax insisted therefore that his men had a full English breakfast inside them before hostilities commenced, which turned out to be an inspired move because it meant that the King’s army was forced to sit around and wait,

having had only cold tea from the previous night. They were left to drool over the smell of fried bacon wafting across the fields from the opposing army, forcing them into a sulk, before finally being called upon by their irate commander, Prince Rupert, to advance on the enemy who were now clearly visible just half a mile away. This impatience and the grumpiness within the Royalist ranks did not help their fighting prowess or morale and some feel that the beans served up at breakfast to the Roundheads was also a major influence in the Royalist retreat. History records that Charles’ army was routed and Fairfax went on to recover Leicester on the 18th of June and immediately after, marched to Somerset where he relieved Taunton and re-captured the West Country for the Parliamentarian side. Another of the many engagements fought during the conflict, was the Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold in 1646. This resulted in yet another heavy defeat for the Royalists, with 1000 killed and another 1000 taken prisoner against light casualties on the Parliamentarian side. There were so many wounded and dying soldiers laid out in Digbeth Street, it was described as flowing with blood. Stow is a hauntingly pretty little market town and I use that word advisedly, because of a very strange experience I had during a visit to the town with our
friends from California. Not the one when friend Dougie actually bought a round, but an even stranger occurrence than that. We were looking around St Edwards Church and I had wandered off to look at the tomb stones set in the floor of the main aisle, leaving the others to study the visitor’s book near the entrance. I looked up to see a tall man seemingly dressed in a black period costume looking over their shoulders at the same register. Apart from us, the church appeared to be deserted, so on hearing voices behind me; I swiveled round to see two tourists emerging from the choir area. When I looked back seconds later, the tall man had disappeared and my party was still discussing the entries in the book. I asked them if they had seen the strange man or if anyone had entered or left the church while they were there – both questions eliciting a negative response. I have never mentioned the episode again until now, but I still wonder who the strange bloke who looked suspiciously like Blackadder could have been...

A dishevelled José Cabrasilbido peered from under his bed rather like a mountain-goat squinting from the depths of some dark cave. As the village policeman it was his duty to keep the peace. However, seeing the recent riot in full swing he muttered something which sounded like “Not bloody likely” and dived for sanctuary ‘neath his bed. With the streets now quiet, José’s courage returned and he ventured out into the sunlight once more. The unrest had brought the old barrio rivalry to the fore with a vengeance. The Olive Mill had gone into administration and the staff numbers reduced by some seventy-five percent. Rodriquez, the mill owner and leader of the Newcomer’s Barrio had in a cynical sectarian act dismissed only workers from the Hill People’s Barrio. The riot and siege of the mill followed. Rodriquez had been running the Mill into the ground ever since he inherited it from his Father. His management style had two simple rules. Rule one. He is always right and rule two. If he is ever found to be wrong then refer to rule one. As a fool who thinks he is clever, he made one disastrous decision after another and blamed the resultant chaos on the innocent. Recently a replacement snudgegrundling machine arrived and provision was being made for its installation. Rodriquez, complaining about the delay simply paced out the space required. When the machinery was in place the reciprocating arm which operated the skitterywangle sprocket had no room to operate. The solution was to knock a hole in the wall of the men’s convenience. This allowed the arm to pass through. Anyone making use of the ‘loo’, in the standing position had to duck every six and a half seconds which was the operating cycle of the machinery. Normally the procedure was to ignore Rodriquez and do the opposite. When the scheme turned out to be a success, Rodriquez’s selective memory would kick in and he would claim the glory. This is perhaps the only reason the mill has lasted as long as it has. With the opposition laid off, the Olive Mill was exclusively populated with sycophants and yes men. A situation which potential buyers were well aware of. Rodriquez had already opened the taps on the olive oil storage tanks and was preparing to torch the Mill when news of a saviour arrived. The Consorcio de Causas Perdidas of Guadix had come in with an offer of finance. They were however under the impression that the Mill was a working museum. The aged machinery certainly reinforced this view. Rodriquez was ecstatic and promptly ordered a complete set of the latest Abyssinian Goat Shirling equipment out of the new funding. One wonders how long the new influx of cash will last.

“Some Things Should Still Be Personal” Or How the Major Internet Organisations have capitulated to P.R.I.S.M. What an opening statement! Blasphemous, libellous and downright suable. Only if it is untrue! What on earth could have provoked such an outburst! Have you seen the advert on T.V. That states Microsoft is only interested in your privacy and states that “some things should still be personal”. Let’s start with a recap of some of the subjects that have been discussed within the leaves of your favourite free newspaper. We have talked about personal security within your own systems, we have discussed how data is stored, deleted, recovered and completely wiped! What if this isn’t enough? For generations we have accepted that there are agencies that monitor (for our safety????) all our telephone conversation, emails, and just about every conceivable form of electronic information transfer. But where do we, the private citizen, draw the line and shout “Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law!”. Would it surprise you that there is an agreement that goes back to 2007 being run by the NSA (National Security Agency) in America, whereby any agency can get information about anyone, on any subject. This is what is going on behind the innocent acronym PRISM. PRISM is a “Special Source Operation” in the tradition of NSA’s intelligence alliances with as many as 100 trusted U.S. companies since the 1970s. Some of these names will be familiar: FaceBook; Microsoft(Hotmail, etc); Google (well known for collecting information!); YouTube and Skype (also Microsoft). Under US law there can be “specifically authorizes intelligence agencies to monitor the phone, email, and other communications of U.S. citizens for up to a week without obtaining a warrant” when one of the parties is outside the U.S. As most of the information flows through servers (Bloody Big Computers) and these are all based in the US, where are we when it come to personal freedom? Now that you know that the NSA has access to all the major players in the america it will be dawning on you that every photo pasted onto Facebook can be accessed by these ‘Agencies’, every comment in every email, every single word spoken to a loved one, half way around the world could be monitored and used against you. So the question that must be asked is “Do we actually what someone watching over our every move?” or are we “Grown-up enough to be able to make our own decisions as to what is right and what is wrong.”. I was wrong! Like everyone, I do make mistakes, and try to learn from them! I believed that whatever I said to my friends in England, Australia and the rest of Europe was covered by the privacy that 2 friends hold. I believed that pictures put on the internet to let friends know that I was well and enjoying life, were safe. I believed that anything placed on “YouTube” had been monitored which allowed me to watch only what I wanted to. So, now I am currently looking for an email provider that offers encryption, a VoIP system that allows encrypted conversations (if it is good enough for the leaders of every country – it’s good enough for me) and anything that will allow me to continue to send lawful messages with the certain knowledge that it will be between myself and whoever I want to talk to. I have absolutely no desire to cause anyone any concern. It is my earnest hope that we will be more careful about what we put in these ‘Very Public Forums’ in the light of this new knowledge. Remember, with knowledge you have choices! Stay smart and choose carefully. Enjoy the coming weeks because the days are starting to get shorter and the fiesta’s are springing up everywhere, just like summer flowers. Until next time when the subject will be less inflammatory have a lovely time For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk
I have lived in Spain for almost seven years and in that time I’ve kept abreast of news from back home. Partly as I’m interested in current affairs and have this column to write, but also as wise words shared with me when I first arrived still ring true. Better to be working hard in the sun than to be working hard under the all too often grey skies back in Blighty. A recent meteorologist’s conference was hastily convened to discuss Britain’s recent topsy turvy weather. It was announced that Britain may be due a dry sunny summer sometime around 2017! 2012’s summer was the second wettest ever recorded, caused by a warmer than usual Atlantic. The Gulf Stream in turn now passes south of the UK bringing wetter weather. Spain and the rest of
REVIEW it...
No Turning Back by Susan Lewis
“So many secrets, lies and burdens of shame. The truth was like the tide: no matter how far it might ebb, it would always make a return.” One of those easy reads but infuriatingly incredible to believe. Lies, deception and hypocrisy emerge to shatter the cosy existence of Eva, a famous ex-model living in the lap of luxury having shunned the limelight. The reason? The book begins by disclosing details about a vicious knife attack by a psychopathic maniac who had been stalking the beautiful Eva during the height of her fame. The attack was barbaric and life-threatening more so because Eva was pregnant at the time. She was fighting for her life but miraculously survived to give birth to a son. She was left badly disfigured. “There were so many of them, cruel jagged gashes torn into the flawless fabric of her skin, grinning, like silent, gruesome mouths.” Eva’s cold-hearted and selfish rejection of her son, unable and unwilling to love and cherish him resulted in his immediate adoption and once Eva recovered it was something she lived to regret. Nick, the father of the child rejected Eva immediately after the attack and Eva’s vengeance in punishing such a callous act was in turn to abandon his son-her own flesh and blood. This chick-flick romance begins in an interestingly dramatic way then plunges into mediocrity and ends on a cringingly predictable happy-everafter note. As a beach-read it is more than adequate but too contrived and spoiled by this predictability. To an outsider, Eva’s world seems perfect then crash, bang, wallop reality sinks in to a topsy-turvy hell before divine intervention falls on them like manna from heaven. Forgiveness, cloaked as a religious almost divine analogy absolves the betrayal of trust and loyalty. Just like that. It ends on a hopeful note typifying Susan Lewis’ craft as a writer of romance. Forgiveness transcends sin. “Where are They Now?” Who would have thought that an article written 16 years later would have reminded Eva of a painful time in the past that she had hoped had been buried, that sometimes the past invades the present and can impinge on the future? The story moves on 16 years where life is looking good for Eva although she is secretly pining for the son she gave away. She married
her “rock” who turns out to be the biggest hypocrite in the story alongside sister Patty. Eva has been naïve, what an understatement! When she has a pitiful showdown with Don she cannot accept his infidelities: “Don would never cheat on her, or lie, or do anything to hurt her, he wouldn’t lie, he never lied!” Even Jasmine, Don’s daughter had warned Eva: “You know what they say about men who dump their wives, if they’ve done it once they’ll do it again.” Her own mother had been dumped by Don so she knew what she was talking about! The truth can sometimes hurt and in Eva’s case it almost destroys her. She had been betrayed by her husband and Patty, her sister. Shocked. Incensed. Foolish. Torn apart and filled with vengeance. A myriad of powerful emotions to contend with. Her life seemed to be inexorably falling apart. The fashion industry and the world of glamour and its expensive trimmings seem superficial. The adult world is characterised by insecurity, confusion and paranoia. Patty is downright irritating, wearing her heart on her sleeve, carrying the guilt of the world on her shoulders in a saintly fashion when she is relishing the love and physical contact of her sister’s husband. Don just seems to enjoy changing partners, like a ping-pong ball that bounces from one court to another. He deserves to be rejected. Two wives down. Next? Not to be trusted anywhere near a pretty female. The worst type of male surely? So, whilst the major part of the novel focuses on Eva’s betrayal and deception, the other development concerns her search for her long lost son with the possibility of a reconciliation from the love-rat, Nick. I suppose anything is possible. But there is a happy-ever-after if you believe in those sorts of things…Enough said. Publisher: Random House. ISBN: 978-0-099-55072-3

continental Europe are apparently due their coldest summer since 1816. I will however take my chances and hang around. Incidentally September and October may be hotter than usual so a fair trade off. Still in Britain Chancellor Osborne threatened ministers with detention if they couldn’t slash £11.5bn of their budgets for the year after next. Don’t worry if hospital waiting lists grow and schools decay as a new railway line called HS2 will be built instead. Incidentally nobody wants this south of Watford except the construction companies as it will destroy swathes of beautiful countryside simply to reduce the travelling time to that Enjoy Stephens musings? Pop over to http://findmeahomeinspain.wordpress.com as the articles early morning meeting in are posted on there too...and they’re a bit longer too! Findmeahome are always looking for quality homes for their sales and rental portfolios, please contact Stephen for a valuation: stephen@ Birmingham. This apparently findmeahome.es Telephone: 636 266 641 will boost British productivity,
as instead of grabbing 20 minutes extra in bed; people will do 20 mins extra work. Foreign railway operators are rubbing their hands with glee in anticipation of further expansion as Britain, wrongly decided long ago to privatise its railways. 2/3s are now owned by State owned companies; from France, Germany and Belgium amongst others. British rail travellers pay the highest fairs in Europe with most of the profit going abroad rather than being reinvested in Britain’s railways. Remember McLibel? In the 1980s a tiny environmental group called London Greenpeace produced and distributed 500 copies of a pamphlet criticising that bastion of healthy eating McDonalds. Instead of ignoring the leaflet the corporation threw the full weight of Britain’s libel laws at two of its authors. Now there’s an explosive revelation that there was another co-author; an undercover policeman going by the name of ‘Bob’ Robinson. McDonalds may want to ask him or the Metropolitan Police to return the £10 million they spent in legal fees. The undercover cop was aiming to infiltrate the Animal Liberation Front or ALF. To help his cover or libido, ‘Bob’ had relationships with unsuspecting women. One of whom bore a child with this lowlife whilst his real wife and children, whom he returned to at weekends, remained blissfully unaware. There are 12 women now suing the police after similar allegations have come to light. There is also an investigation into the allegation that ‘Bob’ planted a fire bomb in Debenhams whilst on a mission with the ALF in which £340,000 of damage was caused. If true, surely this is incitement, as three other men were convicted of the crime. All actions by a shadowy police unit called Special Demonstration Squad. Officers stole the identities of dead children to use as their aliases. Damningly whilst the Met Police were outwardly helping the Lawrence family after their son Stephen was murdered 1993 they were also trying to smear them. Organisations investigating police corruption and deaths of black youths whilst in police custody were also infiltrated. Never trust a policeman!

ANGLING NEWS...WITH BEACHCOMBER JOHN Boat Fishing: ‘Hissing Sid’ went out with fellow skipper ‘Pugwash Pete’ 3 on their two boats. Sid had ‘Coach Driver Paul’ and ‘Cookie the Cabbie’. The weather was perfect, no wind and a flat sea and very hot. They started fishing on the Repsol garage mark in about 70 ft. With only weavers being caught Sid left Pete there and went to the La Mata river bed mark. They fished about a mile offshore in 180/200ft with hardly any drift. They had loads of pandoras, pickerels. combers and Cookie got a cracking red snapper that was too lively for him to hold for Sid to get a photo of. Alas the weather was that hot and Cookie got cooked and asked to go back so at 12.30pm they headed back in. The breeze over the boat on the way back in was refreshing
but Cookie still looked like a beetroot when they got back to port, all in all a good trip though. Shore Fishing: ‘London Bill’ did good on Macenas Beach catching a 2lb sea bass, three 2lb Atlantic Scad and two 3lb palometes, all caught on small spinners. Five members of the ‘Albox Fishing Club’ fished off the Indalo Hotel rocks; a good day was had by everyone, ‘Squiddly Sid’, ‘Dennis the Menace’, ‘Jaguar Jack’, Graham and Tony. Species caught = 5 x tub gurnards, 3 x wide eyed flounders, 3 x horse mackerel, 6 x palometes and 15 x dreaded weavers. Course Fishing: After ‘Puentes Ray’s Sunday disaster last week he set off Monday early @ 5.15am and arrived

just as dawn was breaking . A beautiful morning with no wind and more importantly NO People! He fished the waggler again in his usual spot and was into fish within minutes. Water levels are still dropping but not as much as before. He continued to catch right through the day changing baits on a regular basis to see which was popular. He had 10 x barbel with the biggest weighing 3.3/4lbs and all caught on mini hot dog sausages. Ray finished the day with probably his biggest bag though didn’t bother to count but he was sure it was well into the 100lb a really great day and not another human in sight....Bliss he said. See photo of Ray and a Puentes mirror carp. ‘Baza Barry’ fished Lake Negratin and had about 50lb
of carp and a couple of barbel in a four hour session. He used a small silver spinner for an hour and had two black bass and lost a good trout weighing about 4lbs when it threw the treble hook. Top weights at two matches in Murcia were 59lbs at lake Argos and 54lbs on the River Segura in Murcia town centre. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. For up to date information on any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
19th Hole Golf Society - Cucador On Thursday the 20th June 19 of our intrepid members took on the mighty Desert Springs course, and yet again, most found the course extremely difficult to conquer or even challenge. Weather conditions were perfect as was the condition of the course, so neither of these factors could be blamed for the poor scoring in this individual stableford competition and Team Waltz. Yet again scoring was difficult on a course that almost begs for players to play well. Alongside the individual stableford we had a team Waltz (1st hole best individual score, 2nd hole two best scores and 3rd hole 3 best scores to make the team score). Hence 1, 2,3The Waltz. This confused Ralph Hunter, he thought you had to dance around on the Tee after each bad drive, to the tune of Gercha Cow Son by Chas and Dave. Best reported shot of the day was Syd Walkers brilliant recovery shot on the 4th, Syds Ball, from the Tee, had come
to rest nearly 2 meters from the ground in a bush. Using his trusty three wood (now known as his tree wood) he made good contact with the ball and made the green to make a bogie. The fact is the ball was lodged in a bush but only about half a meter off the ground, he did take his tree wood but only managed to propel it to the ladies Tee from where he completed the hole in one over. And you thought it was only Fishermen who exaggerated!! Our winner of the individual Stableford was Mark Danson with 31 points playing off a handicap of 1, Mark spent many years in South Africa from the age of 10 and learnt his golf there. His most notable achievement was beating Ernie Ells in a junior competition 3 & 2. Mark is a really interesting unassuming man who lets his golf speak for his very natural and special ability. In 2nd place was another “special person”, Nigel Greenwood on his 44th Birthday finished with 30

• YES... The British Grand Prix at Silverstone definitely takes place this weekend. My apologies for the wrong information last week (misread my events calendar). • Also this weekend the final of the Confederations Cup takes place in Rio de Janiero (hopefully featuring the host county against Spain). • The British & Irish Lions (who narrowly won the first Test by 23-21) play Australia in the second encounter in Melbourne on Saturday. • Round six of the 2013 MotorGP season takes place in Holland. • The 100th Tour de France starts in Porto Vecchio on Saturday with Team Sky represented by Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard and Peter Kennaugh. Mark Cavendish is also in the race which ends on 21 July. There are 21 stages and cyclists cover 3,404 km. • Wimbledon fortnight is underway with Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Rory McIlroy’s girlfriend Caroline Wozniaki all seeking glory! • Elsewhere, it’s Wigan (31 pts), Huddersfield (28), Warrington (25) and Leeds (23) at the top of the Super League while Sheffield lead the Championship from Halifax. • For the first time ever, the winner of last week’s Ascot Gold Cup - first run in 1807 - was owned by a reigning Monarch. The horse was Queen’s fouryear filly Estimate, the 7-2 favourite, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore. • Group B winners Spain set a new Confederations Cup record by battering hapless Tahiti 10-0 with Fernando Torres scoring four times and missing a penalty. The first semi-final takes place tonight (Brazil v Uruguay), the second (Brazil-Italy) is tomorrow. • By the way Tahiti will stage the next beach foot-
points, but that is not the reason our Nigel is special, no, it’s not just his ability to play every hole at Desert Springs moaning about the course, the cactus and all the gravelly sandy bits around the fairway edges but he also sponsored the 18th hole with a prize for the nearest the pin with the 2nd shot. Nigel the clue is in the name DESERT SPRINGS!!(I’m in trouble now). Nick Pogson collected 3rd place with 28 points maintaining his consistent results over the past few months. The team Waltz was won by the team of Pat McArdle, Tony and Ellen Lea and Tony Slinn. This was Pats first outing with us since joining the 19th Hole, well done Pat and the team who scored 77 points to beat the team of Dave and Zeta Denyer, Roger Kaye and Billy the Ghost who thought their score of 72 would have won it GRR!! Results: Stableford: 1st Mark Danson 31 points (01); 2nd Nigel Greenwood 30 points (19); 3rd Nick Pogson 28
