HOLIDAY BRITS RISKING THEIR LIVES ON BALCONIES Foreign Office urges British nationals to take care on balconies in popular holiday hotspots in Spain Two young Britons have already been seriously injured this summer after falling from balconies while on holiday in Spain, the Foreign Office has warned - on top of four fatalities and a total of 18 falls across the country last year. The alarming figures have prompted the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and ABTA – The Travel Association to warn young Brits heading off on holiday this summer of the dangers of misbehaving on balconies. Many falls involve alcohol, and the latest incidents highlight the need for particular care in popular destinations such as and Magaluf in Mallorca and San Antonio in Ibiza, where recent incidents have taken place. Andrew Gwatkin, British Consul General who oversees the Balearic Islands said: “I urge young people to take care on holiday and avoid jumping from balcony to balcony or climbing back into their room after a night out. Most falls are accidents that often follow the consumption of alcohol, and which can and do cause serious injury or even death. Drinking may well also invalidate your travel insurance, potentially costing you thousands of pounds if you need medical repatriation. “Some falls are the result of “balconying” - deliberately jumping from a balcony into a swimming pool or from one
balcony to another. Such pranks can end in the grief of a bereaving family when their loved one dies. “Our staff see the devastating effects of a momentary lapse of judgement and the impact on the victim and their family. The message is: holidays are a time to relax and have fun but please don’t leave your common sense at home, think of the potential consequences of your actions.” Jake Evans and his family provide a harsh reminder of just how wrong things can go when he fell seven floors after slipping over the edge of his balcony. A short video of his story can be found here on You Tube http://youtu.be/ hhxqyPUyiTs. For more information, visit https://www.gov.uk/ knowbeforeyougo. Petrol and diesel show slight price increase after a month of constant reductions
Petrol prices have gone up for the first time in over four weeks – just in time for the start of the summer. Although the increase is only 0.07 per cent in the case of petrol and 0.05 per cent for diesel – less than a tenth of a cent per litre – they remain 5.7 per cent higher than a year ago for petrol and 3.7 per cent for diesel. Diesel has in fact been coming down in price all year, with a continued slide seen since January, due to more competitive production thanks to the expansion of the oil refineries in Bilbao, in the Basque Country, and Cartagena (Murcia). But it has just increased to an average of 1.333 euros per litre. Petrol now costs an average of 1.425 euros per litre, following the same pattern as in 2012 – continued reductions in prices until the end of June before hitting historic highs at the end of August, at an average of 1.518 euros per litre and with diesel at 1.522 euros per litre. On this occasion, the price increase is not related to the cost of crude oil per barrel rising, since these have come down to 102 dollars for Brent oil, although Texas Sweet has gone up by a dollar to 96. Spain continues to have some of the lowest prices in the EU and the Eurozone for petrol and diesel. The average cost of diesel in the European Union is 1.419 euros per litre and for petrol, 1.564 euros across the 27 member States, whilst among the reduced number of countries that form part of the Eurozone the average price per litre of diesel is 1.407 euros and petrol, 1.602 euros.

Start of summer Cigarette and alcohol tax goes up holidays sees gridlocks across Spain
Sport
Traffic jams across the country last weekend were reported as travellers from big cities and inland locations flock to the coast for the start of their summer holidays. The worst of the rush was likely to be over by Monday night, by which time at least 5.2 million cars would have been out on the road. Over the next two months, 80 million journeys – nearly two for every inhabitant – will have been made across Spain. Police have stepped up vigilance and are reporting round the clock on gridlocks on major trunk roads. In Madrid, the A-6, A-5, A-1 and A-4 have been rammed solid since Friday night and slow-moving traffic was reported on the AP-7 and A-2 near Barcelona, as well as on the minor roads B-10, B-20 and B-30. Sevilla is experiencing frequent gridlocks on the N-6, whilst on the east coast, the V-31 at the entrance to the city of Valencia, and the N-340 on the way into Alicante city have seen long tailbacks. Roadworks on the A-3 at the Valencia end may also cause long delays, and drivers are encouraged to find alternative routes where possible. So far this weekend, one death on the roads has been reported – a 56-year-old man in Almassora (Castellón province) involved in a three-car pile-up.
Taxes went up on cigarettes and alcohol from Friday as part of the government’s ongoing fiscal reform which will be completed by March next year. Minister for Finance Cristóbal Montoro says these tax rises were already anticipated at the end of April and that there would be ‘no surprises’. He added that the tax increases would be on consumer goods which had an ‘outward negative effect on society’ and, although he did not specifically mention drink and tobacco products, when questioned pointedly on these, admitted that the rises would be ‘in that area’. They are said to be in region of 10 per cent. Montoro stressed that he would not touch taxes on any type of fuel ‘because their prices are already too high’,
Baby found in drain ‘out of danger’ and discharged from intensive care
A baby rescued from the drains in an Alicante apartment block in the early hours of Sunday morning has come out of intensive care and moved onto a neonatal ward. According to press reports, staff at Alicante General Hospital say the infant, who was only around 40 hours old when he was found, is still in a serious condition but is out of danger. He was discovered inside a manhole after a lady living in the block called the fire brigade, thinking she could hear a kitten trapped in the pipes. The ‘kitten’ turned out to be a

She claims she does not remember anything about the birth or what she did with the baby afterwards, having initially stated that she threw him in the drain because she had not wanted to be a mother and could not afford an abortion. Social services have denied her custody of the child, who will be taken into care once he is out of hospital.

nor anything that could affect the hotel and catering sector, given that this is important to tourism, one of Spain’s largest sources of tax income and jobs. Annual company tax will also be affected, with deductions for large companies removed. Those with an annual turnover of 20 million euros or more will not be able to benefit from a capped percentage rate on their tax, in keeping with most of the rest of the EU. Montoro announced on April 26 that he would be ‘reviewing’ certain ‘special’ taxes, without stating which, but stipulating that these would not include petrol, diesel or anything related to restaurants, bars, cafés or hotels.

Suicide note found in Costa del Sol villa of expat family found shot dead
A triple shooting of a British and Irish family at their home in Mijas, Málaga may have been a suicide pact as a result of the care burden the couple suffered. According to a report by ThinkSpain, Philip Wood, 56, who was born in Kenya but has a British passport, was found dead with gunshot wounds in the lounge and his wife Sheila, 54 and daughter Sophie, 28 were lying on a bed covered in blanket. Toxicology testing on the women’s organs is attempting to ascertain whether they were sedated before being shot in the head. A note found in the villa on the Torrenueva urbanisation, which the family had been renting, which read: “We have had a life of suffering and cannot take any more, and I am sorry for what I am about to do.” It is thought this was related to the family’s struggle to cope with their care duties and Mrs Wood is said to have been interviewed on a local radio station describing the ‘isolation’ and problems associated with caring for a disabled child in Spain, and their fears for their daughter’s future when they became elderly or died. Sheila Wood suffered a terminal illness causing kidney failure which meant she was disabled. Although initially it was thought Sophie had Down’s Syndrome, this has been refuted, but she is believed to have been suffering from cerebral palsy and severe learning difficulties, unable to perform many basic daily living activities without assistance, and with a mental age of 10. Debt problems seemed to beset the family, say fellow expatriates. Mr Wood worked in the banking and estate agency sector and used to drive a BMW, say neighbours, and his wife had a brand-new Mini Cooper, but recently have only been driving a ‘hired Opel’ and in the last few weeks not been seen with a vehicle at all. They have lived in the Mijas area for around five years but on the Costa del Sol for at least 15 years, and it is not
known whether they owned a house before renting the luxury villa. Other residents say for many years the family led ‘the high life’, going to the most élite restaurants in Marbella and were heavily involved in the expatriate social scene until around 18 months ago. Since then, they are said to have lived an isolated lifestyle with the blinds always down on their windows and did not mix with anyone, rarely seen out. Sheila was never seen out – only Philip and Sophie – and neighbours and friends say the father and daughter ‘absolutely adored each other’. According to sources close to the case, they were two months behind on their rent and had been forced to sell their cars to survive after Mr Wood was made redundant. They were in fact found when their British landlord went to their house to demand the unpaid rent from them. Debt collectors had been to the villa in the weeks before the family’s death, and a friend said a desperate-sounding Mr Woods had asked him to cash a cheque for 26 euros for him. But the contents of the suicide note, written in Philip Wood’s hand, suggest the issue was more related to the women’s disabilities than to money trouble. Neighbours questioned by various media said they last saw Mr Wood ‘walking up a hill carrying heavy shopping bags’ and that he frequently asked for help in stopping another resident’s dog from barking, saying this was ‘upsetting his wife’, who had ‘become ill in recent months’. Witnesses said they heard three shots earlier this week, but assumed it was local hunters killing wild boar. The Guardia Civil is not going to carry out any further investigations into the cause and motives, although further forensic examinations of the bodies are due to take place. Authorities in the UK are attempting to contact relatives of the deceased couple and their daughter.

Zapatero wins ‘equality award’ connexions for legalising same-sex marriage New wireless BROADBAND internet 950 479 502
Former president of Spain José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has won an award for his work in ensuring equal rights for homosexual people by pushing through the law that has allowed same-sex couples to marry since 2005. The ex-socialist leader (pictured), who retired from politics after losing the last elections, picked up the Carmen Cerdeira Award and gave a speech in which he called for equality for everyone and added, “Nothing is more important than freedom; nothing is more hurtful than discrimination and there is no labour more important than the fight against domination.” Zapatero recalled that Spain’s having become ‘a primary example of tolerance, respect and equality’, which ‘does not gain in value on the stockmarket but certainly does in society’, meant
it paved the way for other countries in the West to do likewise and allow marriages between same-sex couples to be recognised at law on an identical footing with those of mixed-sex couples, without any ‘special titles’ such as ‘civil union’ or ‘legal partnership’.
France now allows fullyfledged weddings between two men and two women, whereas before, although they could form a socalled pacs, or legal union – as could heterosexual couples – these were not recognised at law in the same way as a marriage. The UK is now in the final throes of legalising these unions, having had, for the last few years, a similar system to the French pacs, known as a ‘civil partnership’ – but this was only available to gay couples rather than malefemale relationships. Zapatero has called for
the socialists to ‘support and listen to’ the efforts being made by their secretary-general, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, Rajoy’s rival in the last elections, since these are ‘good for everything and everyone’.
Rubalcaba was present at the prizegiving and took the opportunity to condemn the PP’s decision, as soon as they got into power, to appeal against the same-sex marriage decree through the Constitutional Court. Although this appeal – which was not unanimously supported by PP members and had many dissenters among the party – eventually failed, the many months it took to do so ‘created serious worry and stress’ for existing married couples of the same gender and those who would have liked to wed in the future. These are people, Rubalcaba said, who suffered ‘indignity’ and
‘concern’ when they ‘merely wanted to live a quiet life with their partners’. “The equal marriage law was upheld by the Constitutional Court, and Spanish society has not imploded as a result, nor is it any different. Well, it is in fact different insofar as more people have been able to find happiness,” Rubalcaba concluded.

As British expatriates in Spain prepare for their annual influx of summer visitors, the British Embassy is urging people who are expecting friends and family to remind them to bring an often-forgotten essential – a European Health Insurance Card.

“If you’re having family or friends to stay this summer, they’ll be asking you what they need to bring. Item number one on their checklist should be the European Health Insurance Card - also known as an EHIC” says a British Embassy spokesman.

“This simple piece of plastic entitles the holder to all medically-necessary treatment during a temporary stay in Spain. It’s easy to get – check out www. ehic.org.uk - and it costs nothing. “Although most people’s trips are trouble-free, things can go wrong. An EHIC will provide peace of mind in case someone needs to see the doctor. It’ll help to ensure they don’t take home a big hospital bill should they need medical care.” Comprehensive travel insurance is the second vital item on a visitor’s packing list. It covers all the extras that an EHIC doesn’t provide, such as repatriation in the case of medical emergency. If a visiting friend or family member is taken into hospital, an EHIC is enough to cover someone until they are well enough to travel home. If someone who is taking out travel insurance has a pre-existing medical condition, then do remind them to declare it. If they don’t, the insurer may well invalidate their policy. “You won’t fool them but they may make a fool of you”, says an Embassy spokesman.

Every year consular staff in Spain are asked to assist hundreds of Britons who have failed to take out travel insurance or who have invalidated their policies, and who have ended up facing huge bills when attending a private clinic or hospital.

However, visitors to Spain should be aware that they do not have to provide travel insurance as payment for medically necessary treatment in a public or state healthcare facility. They should insist that their EHIC is accepted. Anyone asked to sign a form or disclaimer in a state hospital should check that they are not forfeiting the right to be treated under an EHIC. If someone’s EHIC is refused or for other concerns about using an EHIC whilst in Spain, call the Department of Health team at the British Consulate on 902 109 356. A visitor who needs to see a doctor and doesn’t have an EHIC with them can also get a Provisional Replacement Certificate from the Overseas Healthcare Team in Newcastle, on +44 191 218 1999. Friday Golf Society 28 june:
After a week off due to the Top Banana competition at La Envía regular Friday golf returned to Almerimar this week. On a windy and sunny day there were some good scores and some not so good ones. 30 players including one guest took part in a Best 2 stableford competition with 2 hidden holes. The winners with a whopping 96 points were Jürgen Neuhäuser, Uschi Neuhäuser, Nina Taylor and Mimmo Pettinicchio. Last place and chocolates went to Sylvia Green, Heinz Hajek (winner of the last Friday competition at Almerimar and also the last summer Tuesday competition), Kevin Wood and Peter Davies. Nearest the pin on hole 17 was won by Isabel Fielding with a distance of 7.22m. Apparently she almost sank the putt as well. If she had done she would have had 3 birdies on par threes as she had birdies on the two water holes (8 and 12). We had 4 players who beat their handicap this week. Well done to Alan Sharpe (40 points) Jürgen Neuhäuser (39), Jacqui mays (38) and John Fielding (37). Thanks to John Fielding for sorting out the cards and Herbert Piest for giving out the prizes this week. You can see the full results at:

Ferrer and Verdasco into Wimbledon quarter-finals
Allen is still looking for a home
Do you remember ALLEN, the Corgi mix, we wrote about a few weeks ago? He is a friendly, sociable little dog and we find it quite inexplicable that Allen has not yet found a forever home. Due to his endearing nature, ALLEN has now become the most loving, substitute foster-grandpa that you can imagine, to a group of abandoned puppies. Allen shares their kennel and frolics with them. At the same time he provides them with the sense of parental protection that puppies require. Since puppies grow very fast, Allen is going to find himself alone again in the not too distant future. He so much deserves to have a home and someone who will care for him. Last week we spoke briefly about the Spanish Greyhounds, the persecuted Galgos, who are used to hunt hares in the Spanish countryside. They spend their lives in damp, tiny and dirty holes or windowless shacks, deprived of daylight, exercise and affection. Their typical meal is just water and stale bread. When the hunting season ends, countless numbers of Galgos are abandoned or even worse. In their own native land, Galgos are still viewed as second class animals. Few Spaniards will own them as pets. They are bred carelessly and when the hunting season ends, they are destroyed in a variety of inhumane ways. Their fate is to be hanged, dumped into abandoned wells, shot or even burned to death. The lucky ones are rescued by a handful of shelters in Spain, operated by dedicated individuals. Almost all of the resources come from outside Spain. The Countries that help the plight of these poor dogs are the UK, USA, Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland and Germany. Some of the Galgueros (Galgo handlers) are willing to give their unwanted dogs to shelters but the abuse and torture of Galgos continues. There is a campaign to get a European law passed that will prevent and punish mistreatment of the Galgos. Action is so badly needed to help these animals. The following link takes you to the information about this campaign. http://sosgalgos.com/?p=16024 The SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR will always be happy to see you so you can meet the animals and hopefully adopt one. Ask for details from Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com
Spain’s David Ferrer and Fernando Verdasco are both through to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, but Carla Suárez Navarro was beaten in straight sets by Petra Kvitova. No.4 seed David Ferrer beat Croatia’s Ivan Dodig 6-7, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1 to book his place in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row. Javea-born Ferrer squandered eight break points in the first set, but gained in confidence after winning the second set and raced through the third and fourth sets. An ankle injury sustained in the first round is causing Spain’s top-ranked player some discomfort, but he has insisted in playing through the pain. Next up is the No. 8 seed Juan Martín del Potro, against whom Ferrer has a good record. “With Del Potro, he’s a very great player. It’s going to be difficult, sure. I need to play my best tennis for to win Del Potro. And in a grass court I think is more difficult”. No. 54 seed Fernando Verdasco made light work of the 6’8” Kenny De Schepper, winning 6-4, 64, 6-4 to make the quarterfinals for the first time in 11 attempts. After a lengthy barren match in the top-flight tournaments, Verdasco
has rather surprisingly found his form on grass. He reached the quarterfinals in Eastbourne two
weeks ago and has now won 12 sets in a row since losing the first set to Xavier Malisse in the first round at
Wimbledon.
Verdasco’s next opponent will be the No. 2 seed, Britain’s Andy Murray.

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREAT
Women eating two helpings a week of oily fish such as salmon may gain protection against breast cancer, claim researchers. A major review of studies found adding this amount of fish to the diet cuts the breast cancer risk by up to 14 per cent. Fish supplies omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for brain development and also thought to reduce inflammation of the brain, cardiovascular system and other cells. But surveys suggest nine out of 10 children and two-thirds of adults in Britain never bother to eat it. The best dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids is oily fish because the human body cannot produce them. Almost 50,000 women in the UK develop breast cancer each year, and the rate is rising. Previous research has suggested that omega-3 is the most promising type of fat to cut cancer risk, but results have been inconsistent. A team of researchers based in China set out to investigate the link between fish and omega-3 intake and the risk of breast cancer. They measured intake from both dietary sources and blood tests, according to a report in the British Medical Journal. They reviewed and analysed the results of 26 studies from the United States, Europe and Asia involving over 800,000 participants and over 20,000 cases of breast cancer. The latest study found an extra 0.1 g or 0.1 per cent of energy per day derived from omega3 fatty acids in fish was linked with a five per cent reduction in risk. Overall, omega-3 fatty acids from fish sources was linked with a 14 per cent cut in breast cancer between the highest and lowest levels of intake. The risk was lowest in Asian populations, probably because fish intake is much higher in Asia than in western countries, say the authors. Further analysis suggested that more protection came from eating more oily fish - an extra
oily fish could protect women against breast cancer
0.1 g or 0.1 per cent of energy per day derived from omega3 fatty acids in fish was linked with a five per cent reduction in risk. To achieve this level of risk reduction, women should eat one to two portions a week of oily fish such as salmon, tuna or sardines. The authors say their analysis, together with previous publications, supports a ‘protective role’ of omega-3 fatty acids from fish on the incidence of breast cancer. They say the study provides ‘solid and robust evidence’ which could be enhanced by additional research comparing women’s omega-3 dietary intake and breast cancer incidence, it says. Britons are currently advised to eat fish at least twice a week, including one portion of oily fish. A portion is 140g or six ounces. The human body cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids and the best dietary source is oily fish. Types of fish that contain high levels include tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, and anchovies. White fish is also a healthy food including cod, haddock and plaice although it contains lower levels of essential fatty acids. Katherine Woods, Research Information Manager at Breast Cancer Campaign said the research may have failed to
account for women with healthier diets being leaner. She said ‘While this research reported a reduction in breast cancer risk of 14 per cent for women consuming the highest levels of a particular type of fatty acid, it is important to note that body mass index (BMI) was not factored into the findings which could go some way to explaining this link. ‘Further research is needed in order to understand any links between BMI, fatty acids found in fish and breast cancer risk. ‘Maintaining a healthy weight, exercise and reducing alcohol intake can help reduce the risk of breast cancer and other diseases.’ Sally Greenbrook,
Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s Senior Policy Officer said ‘It’s difficult to say with any certainty which foods or dietary factors have an impact on breast cancer risk, since we all eat a variety of different foods, and our diet changes over our lifetime. ‘The study found that fatty acids found in fish could be associated with a lower risk of breast cancer, but there’s not enough evidence yet to suggest eating fish will reduce a person’s individual risk. However, we do recommend that all people eat a healthy balanced diet for their general health and wellbeing, of which fish can certainly form a part.’ ARTICLE: DAILYMAIL.CO.UK

CAMBRDGE 800 CONVENTION Football club offers AND AWARDS CEREMONY 2013 place in team for £20,000
Wow! This sums up in one word the opinion of the assembled audience at last Friday’s Cambridge 800 Convention held at the prestigious Don Carlos Hotel near Marbella. And what a gathering it was! With top executives from the UK Parent Company, Cambridge Nutritional Foods Ltd, Directors and staff of the Spanish arm Cambridge 800, together with Cambridge 800 Consultants in Spain and their clients - all awaiting with bated breath for the results of the awards … so well deserved after months of successfully succeeding to lose weight! The first half of the conference included the story so far for Cambridge 800 since its launch, introduced by Sarah Hawes, Directora in Spain and Clive Norton, Commercial and Board Director. This was followed by the more serious side of weight loss, delivered by Professor Anthony Leeds, Cambridge Medical Director who addressed global health issues and the worldwide on-going independent medical research conducted by Cambridge, in countries as diverse as Vietnam, Malaysia and Denmark amongst others. The brand, Cambridge 800 was launched in Spain in January 2012 so this convention was the first time the Company could award such accolades to those who had chosen to lose weight the Cambridge way! There were 6 finalists for the coveted title of ‘Cambridge 800 Slimmer of the Year 2013’, all proudly attending to show off their new figures. Then came the award for the ‘Consultant of the Year 2013’, the strength behind the slimmers, who provide one to one support and advice throughout the weight loss programme and the weight loss journey of their customer. Additionally there was a special award for ‘Sponsor of the Year 2013’ given to Joint Consultants who had gone the extra mile to support and sponsor many active Consultants with several more in the wings. The awards were presented by Sarah and Clive as well as the charming Mike Swinburne, UK finance and board director. After a short break at the end of the day, delegates relaxed under the stars whilst dining in the beautiful Hotel Don Carlos gardens, listening to excellent operatic and modern renditions by the very talented Arran Harding and were enthralled by the fabulous display of outstanding Flamenco dancing accompanied by Spanish brothers Los Guillen on guitars! Even the eventual winner of ‘Slimmer of the Year 2013’ Mr Robert Blyde {stage name Rob Stevens} gave a truly wonderful performance - he surely is a potential contender for the X-Factor!! Cambridge 800 is the proven and nutritional way to lose weight and more importantly to keep it off long term. No dieting programme is easy, you still need willpower but with the help of such professional products manufactured in the UK by Cambridge, and supplied to Cambridge 800 in Spain, teamed with the enormous inspirational help and support provided by the Consultants, losing weight and keeping it off has never been quite so easy.

A cash-strapped football club is offering one fan the chance to play for the first team - if they’re willing to pay £20,000. Conference Premier side Macclesfield Town says the successful applicant will play 10 minutes of a league or cup game. The club says that only fit males between the ages of 18 and 35 will be considered. “It’s common knowledge that the club is in a precarious position and the club are looking at all avenues to keep the club running,” said associate director Andy Scott. “As far as we know this has never been done before so it is a unique moment in English football. If we are 3-0 up with 10 minutes to go that would be a good opportunity for (manager John Askey) to utilise the situation. There’s absolutely no way we would do it unless it was the right moment in the right game.” The club, known as the Silkmen, ended last season
£500,000 in debt. It needs to raise £100,000 by the end of August to stay afloat. It is unclear how a winner will be selected if more than one person offers the cash. Askey said: “What we don’t want is for it to become farcical, but I don’t think it will hinder or restrict the team, far from it. We wouldn’t be doing it if there was any danger of that.” Jon Smart, chairman of the Silkmen’s Supporters Trust, said: “Personally I can’t see anything wrong with it. If someone is prepared to pay that, good luck to them.” The team was relegated from the Football League in 2012 after 15 years. Their league is one below League Two. Last season the club reached the fourth round of the FA Cup, but lost 1-0 to Premier League side Wigan Athletic. The Football Conference has not yet commented on the plan.

both to the best of our knowledge tax residents. We have a house in joint names valued at approximately 180000 euro and savings of aprox. 40000. We would like to know how much inheritance tax my wife would have to pay if I deceased, and how much capital gains tax would we pay if we decided to sell?
A . You are going to like the answers. Inheritance tax: If you deceased, your wife would pay NO INHERITANCE TAX, as she would be entitled as resident of Andalucía to 175000 euro tax free, which is more than the value of the estate she would receive. Please note that the 175000 euro exemption in Andalucía, is an all or nothing exemption. If you are one cent over, you pay on all but the first 16000 euro. Each autonomous region of Spain has it´s own exemption rates, and the legislation applicable (and therefore the levels of exemption) will be the one of the autonomous region of Spain where the heir has been a resident for the larger part of the five years previous to the death. Believe it or not very often tax planning involves moving from one area of Spain to another. Incredible but true...A wife resident in Almería inheriting a net estate of 813000 euro from her husband would pay just under 200000 euro in Andalucia while if the same wife had been living in Madrid she would have paid 0 inheritance tax). Could the lady have avoided the tax. Yes, but the tax planning would have required the family moved to Madrid. Capital gains tax: you will pay NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX because if you are over 65 years of age and are selling your main home (you can not claim this if you are a non resident), the sale is exempt of capital gains tax.

ANTAS(Jauro de Antas)
After the sad death of 56 year-old Boxers GS Vice Captain Steve Gilmore at Desert Springs, his friends decided to arrange a golf competition in his memory. A small fund was started and, thanks to his popularity, this quickly grew. Approaches to local golf courses for some support in the way of prizes were warmly received and, as the generosity of Almeria’s golfers became evident, the idea grew into a tournament to celebrate and promote golf in Almeria Province. Steve’s home course of Alboran, built for the Mediterranean Games of 2005, set the ball rolling by offering the venue at a very special price of €35 to include golf and a buffet as well as a chance to compete for trophies and prizes, Despite this worthy sounding theme, it has never departed from being a competition to bring together golfers of all standards from many different groups and societies to enjoy a day’s sport. Many local businesses are contributing to the sponsorship, and every golf course in Almeria, along with 2 from Murcia and one from Granada has offered fantastic prizes. Local societies will be represented by members of all ability, allowing players who might normally be nervous of such an event to take advantage of the rare opportunity to play in a grand tournament with a friendly face, and to play with Spanish golfers, many of whom knew Steve. A magnificent trophy for the overall winner is backed up with 1st,2nd &3rd silverware for all divisions; but the organisers have been keen to spread the prize-winning opportunities across the field, restricting the Nearest The Pin prizes to one per person from each division across the day. Steve’s death has brought to the fore the problem of emergency medical problems on the golf course and many societies are now ensuring that they have some first aid skills available. As a mark of respect to Steve’s family there will be a collection for the British Heart Foundation which hopefully will produce a substantial donation.

Macular Degeneration or Cataracts? Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a painless eye condition that leads to the gradual loss of central vision. Central vision is used to see what is directly in front of you, during activities such as reading or watching television for example. The central vision becomes increasingly blurred leading to symptoms including: difficulty reading printed or written text (because it appears blurry); colours appear less vibrant; difficulty recognising people’s faces AMD usually affects both eyes, but the speed at which it progresses can vary from eye to eye. Macular degeneration does not affect the peripheral vision (outer vision), which means it will not cause complete blindness. Treatment: There is currently no cure for AMD so treatment is mostly based on helping a person make the most of their remaining vision, such as using magnifying lenses to help make reading easier. There is also limited evidence that eating a diet high in leafy green vegetables and fresh fruit can slow the progression of AMD. Some medications are available but treatment for AMD does not always lead to improved vision, but can prevent vision from worsening. The sooner treatment is started the greater the chance of success. Cataracts: Cataracts are cloudy (opaque) areas that develop in the lens of an eye. The lens should normally be clear. But, with cataracts, the affected lens becomes like frosted glass. Cataracts most commonly occur in older people and develop gradually. Cataracts can usually be treated with a routine day case operation where the cloudy lens is removed and is replaced with an artificial plastic lens. Some people have the wrong idea about cataracts. For example, some people wrongly think that a cataract is like a skin that forms over the eye or lens. This is not true. A cataract is a gradual change in the structure of the lens in an eye, which makes it gradually more and more cloudy. Symptoms: At first you may notice your vision becoming a bit blurred. With time, you may notice some of the following: having spots in your vision, seeing halos around bright lights - for example, street lights, not being able to see as well in brightly lit rooms or in sunshine, bcoming easily dazzled by bright lights such as the headlights of an oncoming car, your colour vision may become washed out or faded, over the years your vision may gradually become worse and is unable to be corrected by glasses. Depending on the severity of the cataract, the effect on your sight can range from vision being slightly blurred to complete blindness in the affected eye. Diagnosis: A cataract or Macular Dengeneration can usually be seen easily by a doctor or optometrist (optician) when they examine your eyes. ARTICLE BY NICKI WAKEMAN, ALMERIA ANGELS

Iberia to offer in-flight Wi-Fi
IBERIA long-haul flights will soon have WiFi access on board – albeit at a cost. The airline confirms that 25 Airbus A330 and A340 will include internet access at five euros for 5MB. Although this is one of the more expensive in-flight Wi-Fi services – Gogo costs 14 USD for 24 hours with no download limit – the facility is still very hard to find among airlines in general and shows a massive step forward in passenger convenience in the 21st-century, as well as a pioneering move in Europe. Other highly-modern services to be offered by Iberia in the near future include a new social network site, a personalised ‘app’ for Smartphones, a brand-new userfriendly website with a much ‘cleaner’ layout and easy connections to Facebook and LinkedIn. This system even allows travellers to
choose passengers to sit next to using their Facebook or LinkedIn profiles, following in the footsteps of Dutch airline KLM, and which has been baptised by Iberia as ‘social seating’. A further feature of the website is an ‘inspirational search engine’, which allows users to describe their interests when travelling – such as relaxation, shopping, beach holidays, culture and history, countryside, adventure or sports – and be given suggestions as to possible destinations, which can be filtered by price and include a downloadable travel guide. The Wi-Fi service will be gradually rolled out between now and 2015, although the first aircraft to include the facility will be taking off in the next few weeks.
Telefónica now selling Firefox OS Smartphone
Telefónica has put the first-ever Smartphone with Firefox OS on sale as from Monday. The handset, which costs 69 euros including IVA, has been designed to compete with Android and iOS phones, and the Spanish telecommunications giant is in talks with Sony, Alcatel, LG and Huawei with a view to incorporating the system. The ZTE Open is aimed at buyers who have not yet entered the world of Smartphone technology, since it uses some of the older
Android systems and offers access to basic application. It has a 3.5” screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a 1Ghz processor and a MicroSD card. When bought as a pay-asyou-go model, it comes with 30 euros of credit already on. Telefónica says the mobile telephone is fully integrated with social networks such as Tuenti and Facebook, and they are hoping to make it compatible with the practically-free messaging application, WhatsApp.

Housing Construction Could Rise by 5% in 2014 Housing construction in Spain will rebound by 5% next year and by 15% in 2015, according to forecasts presented last week by the Building Technology Institute of Catalonia (ITeC), member of Euroconstruct (an analysis group consisting of 19 European institutes). Although these percentages translate into “insignificant” increases in activity in absolute terms, El Mundo reported that it is virtually the only positive data for the whole of the construction sector, which will continue in free fall this year. According to ITeC, which prepares the report on Spain for Euroconstruct, the construction sector (comprising residential building, non-residential, rehabilitation and civil engineering) will yield by 23.8% in 2013, 7.7% in 2014 and 1.5% in 2015. At a press conference, the head of the IteC forecast analysis service, Josep Ramon Fontana, explained that, although 2013 will close with 40,000 new home constructions started in Spain, which is 20% less than in the previous year, in 2014 the number of new home constructions will rise to 45,000, and in 2015 up to 60,000. Fontana stressed that although these figures are “absurdly low” compared, for example, with the average 250,000 units started during the crisis of 1991-1993, they are “sufficient” to register increases in activity in 2014 and 2015, though with scarcely any “intensity”. The Mojacar Branch of the RBL Celebrate Armed Forces Day
On Saturday 29th June members and friends of the Mojacar branch of TRBL were wined and dined in style in the lovely setting that is on offer at the Hostal Rural. We were treated to a full BBQ sit down meal by the chiringuito with music by Kay Frances. There were games, tombola, raffle and a guess the name of a teddy bear which was won by Lesley Langdon and a hamper was won by Tom Robinson. This is the last event now until the Mojacar branch meet on 5th September in the Artisan centre at 11.00 am . Further information is available on http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/ branches/mojacar Or phone 634368349. You do not need to have been in the armed forces to become a member.

Could YOU be a Volunteer?
Dames in Turre rounded off a very successful season with an excellent lunch at the Hostal Rural in Turre and a party at the Maui Beach bar. This year , we sadly said goodbye to our Chairman Jean Barker who is returning to the UK to begin a new phase in her life. Our new Chairman is Brenda Appleby, a founder member of the Dames in Turre and vice Chairman Sue Wallace and we wish them well in their new posts. Fundraising this year has been a great success and around 7000€ has been distributed to various local charities. Donations of 2000€ to Macs and 2000€ to the Red Cross and 1000€ to AECC . Paws, Asprodalba and Asadis received 500€ each with 200€ to the Animo group and 100€ to the Children´s Home in Vera. A monthly food shop of 100€ was taken along to the Church is Turre for their food bank and Members brought along food items to the meetings which also have been given to the Church . The new season for Dames starts at 11.00am on the 30th September at the multiple use centre in Turre.

simple summer meals These suggestions are not formal recipes; rather, they provide a general outline so that with a few simple ingredients you can turn any idea on this list into a meal for two.
Eggs with asparagus: Simmer eggs gently for six minutes, run under cold water until cool, then peel. Serve over steamed asparagus... Herby pasta: Toss a couple of handfuls of fresh chopped herbs with a few tbs of olive oil in a hot pan. Serve over angel-hair pasta (capellini, a very fine spaghetti), diluting the sauce if necessary with pasta cooking water... Scallop ceviche with lime: Cut eight raw scallops into four horizontal slices each. Sprinkle with lime juice, salt and crushed chillies; serve after five minutes... Prawns with white beans: Open a tin of white beans and combine with olive oil, salt, prawns, minced garlic and thyme leaves in a pan. Cook, stirring, until the prawns are done; garnish with
more olive oil... Mussels with basil and tomato: Put 1.4 kilos of washed mussels in a deep pan with 250ml white wine, garlic cloves, basil leaves and chopped tomatoes. Steam until mussels open - just a few minutes... Sole on bread: Heat 1 cm of olive oil in a pan. Dip sole fillets in flour and fry until crisp, about 2 minutes a side. Serve on bread with tartare sauce... Clams with garlic: Put a few dozen washed clams in a large, hot frying pan with olive oil. When the clams begin to open, add a tbs or 2 of chopped garlic. When most or all are opened, add some chopped parsley. Serve alone, with bread or over angel-hair pasta...

Violeta the Galgo....................... cruelly abandoned
Terrible cruelty is inflicted on Galgos, Spanish Greyhounds. They are used for racing and for hunting, but if they get injured they are callously disposed of without a thought for their welfare. If they are not abandoned they can be hanged and left to die. Violeta is a case in point of abandonment. She is a young female Galgo, born in June 2010. She is a very gentle, intelligent and curious dog. She is also very affectionate. She was found abandoned close to the shelter with a broken hind leg and unable to move. She had to have two operations and was subsequently immobilised for months in a cage until the bones had healed. This ordeal she had to endure has now paid off and she has completely recovered. She will suffer no consequences and in fact she sprints about at an amazing speed. Throughout the long recovery period she was cared for at a foster home where she still lives at present. She gets along quite well with the other dogs who taught her to bark and she has been converted into something of a guardian dog. Violeta appreciates comfort and always surrounds herself with cushions and is a real family dog. There is a campaign to get a European law passed that will prevent and punish mistreatment of the Galgos , Spanish greyhounds. Action is so badly needed to help these animals. The following link takes you to the information about this campaign: http://sosgalgos.com/?p=16024 There is also good news from the shelter. Otto the Dalmatian has been adopted by a Spanish family as is Rocky the German Shepherd mix with an amputated front leg. He had previously been adopted by a couple in Cadiz late last summer. He was returned to the shelter when the couple split up. Fortunately he was adopted again after just a couple of days back in the dog shelter. He is going to live in a cortijo very shortly. Moby is already in Germany and Fernando is leaving this week for his new home in Germany. Kinara and one of the Tomato puppies are booked to travel there in mid July and Kinara is going to be scanned and will receive adequate treatment in Germany. Berry is booked for his trip to his forever home there in September.
The SOCIEDAD PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR will always be happy to see you so you can meet these lovely animals and hopefully adopt one. Ask for details from Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com

viewpoint
If I wanted fruit it had to be peaches or peaches. I gazed glumly at the choice of peaches or nothing and passed on, hoping that maybe another type of fruit was hidden somewhere in the mysterious and randomly stacked back shelves of the little supermarket on the front in Arboleas. Remembering that we were down to our last 2 slices of bread I picked up some rolls and continued to the till. The amply built young lady in charge broke off her conversation with the village elder to attend to my meagre purchase. To fill the gap thus caused in the conversation I mentioned that I had come in for fruit for my husband, but that he didn’t like peaches. Then I saw them - a huge bag of potato crisps; great big irregular shaped slices of golden scrumptiousness, hand carved from real potatoes, nestling seductively adjacent to the till. I will climb mountains, ford raging torrents, fight angry dragons and even pass chocolate for potato crisps, and I expressed this predilection to the young lady. Her face took on a pleasing pink tinge as she explained that these crisps were cut by hand and fried in best olive oil. She didn’t say so, but I have a feeling that the hand that cut the crisps was hers. I picked up the bag and said that I must have them, adding that these looked the best crisps that I had ever seen. She visibly swelled with pride at my words, adding that in her opinion these crisps were the best in the world. By this point we were bosom friends, united by an appreciation of crisps in general and the excellence of these crisps in particular. Suddenly she ducked beneath the counter and came back up with a sliced white loaf. ‘Does your husband like bread? This is very good bread.’ I looked at the proffered loaf. It was built like a German sausage dog - not very big about, but exceedingly long. She saw me hesitate. With my purchase of rolls I already had all the bread I needed. ‘Take it’ she urged. ‘It’s a present.’ How could I refuse a gift from a fellow connoisseur of crisps? I took it. I went in to the shop to buy fruit. I came out with a bag of bread rolls, a bag of crisps as big as Santa’s sack, a sliced loaf as long as a wet Monday, and a new best friend, all for under 4 Euros. For the record, the crisps were well beyond delicious josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk – that young lady makes exceedingly good crisps!

Banking on the Last Bus Home
When I was a young man I seemed to be a magnet for all those people I would rather not be seen with or the ones who seemed to have some sort of screw loose. In short it was always me who attracted the head cases. One night, while travelling home by public transport from my girl friend’s house situated on the other side of town, I experienced a prime example of this phenomenon. I had climbed to the top deck, which was my customary practice because I knew from regular use that it was always near empty at that time of the evening. And sure enough, apart from a young couple canoodling in the very front seat, neither of whom it seemed had eaten all day; the bus was unoccupied. I sat down in a window seat near the rear of the vehicle and settled down for the uneventful thirty minute journey home - or so I thought. It remained uneventful for only two minutes, because at the next stop we were joined
by the nutter . . . who of course, favoured riding on the upper deck. I instantly recognised our new travelling companion as a whacko and it wasn’t so much his dad’s 1940’s shirt, half in-half out of his baggy trousers, or the wellington boots. It wasn’t even the noticeable dribble at the corner of his mouth that did it. It was the eyes: those staring, unblinking saucer eyes and that fixed look of glee on the baby face. Standing at the top of the stairs, he slowly surveyed the rows of seats. He immediately dismissed the loving twosome at the front, and they, completely oblivious to his presence, simply carried on with their evening meal, i.e. each other. His gaze then fell upon me. Oh No! I knew what was coming. Then the gleeful expression changed to one of unconcealed ecstasy as he sprinted up the aisle and leapt into the seat next to me. OH NO!! He looked at me for a full half minute and I swear his eyes never blinked once, before he broke into laughter – at least I took it to be laughter, because what came out was a Gurr-her-herrr sound. How should I respond? I mean what do you say to a fruitcake who clearly has only one oar in the water? So I just said, ‘Hello’. It was another agonising wait By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com
before he came out with his next line; a classic and real conversation stopper. ‘I’m’s a piggy bank’ he said. Stunned, I could only come back with a classic of my own, although I admit it lacked a certain originality and je ne sais quoi, and I answered: ‘That’s nice’. ‘No I am, look’ he said, and then stuck out his tongue. Now I have to say, I had never seen a tongue as mighty as that one and if it’s true that the colour and condition of the tongue can determine your state of health, then this kid had bubonic plague and haemorrhoids the size of melons. ‘I’m sorry, but I don’t . . .’ I began to say. ‘usum oney o my yungy’ he spattered. ‘What?’ I queried, wiping the spittle from my face. The tongue shot back in like a roller blind late for work. ‘Put . . . some . . . money . . . on . . . my . . . tonguey’, he slowly chanted and enunciating as if talking to a toddler, ‘and I’ll save it for you. Gurr-her-herrr!’ ‘Oh I bet you will’, I said sarcastically, at last finding a bit of backbone. ‘DO IT’ he bawled, taking me completely unawares and knocking me sideways with this sudden change of mood. My backbone crumbled. ‘Aw go’s on’, he pleaded, resorting back to his childlike persona and out shot the fabulous tongue. Trying not to show my nervousness, I fumbled around for some change and practicing extraordinary care not to touch the said organ, I deposited a sixpenny piece, for these were the days immediately prior to decimalisation.

alqueria - Don Miguel El Sabio and the Particle Accelerator John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu
HAND CUT
SOLTIMES JULY 2013
At seventy-nine percent the Alquerian unemployment figure was the highest in the western world. Manuela made passionate pleas for a state sponsored project to get the people back to work. Everyone in the Alquerian establishment took it upon themselves to apply to various international bodies for funding. Purely from a sense of community spirit. None thought of personal gain, at least that’s what they said publicly. The replies soon came in, all starting with the line ‘In the present economic climate …..’ One however, from the United Nations Scientific Development Council guaranteed funding for a project put forward by Don Miguel El Sabio. Alqueria’s only intellectual, well he had mastered joined-up writing. The Don’s proposal? Alqueria’s very own particle accelerator. While Sabio had confidence in his abilities, no-one else did. Most thought it was just an elaborate ploy to defraud the UN of vast quantities of cash. A true Alquerian project. The Government applauded in admiration. As the Alquerian Treasury Minister counted the cash from the UN, the Don marshalled the unemployed of the village. He took over the old television studio off the Calle Generalissimo and closed the steel doors behind. What he was doing was of no interest to the rest of the village. They viewed him with suspicion at the best of times and as he was keeping the rebellious youth of Alqueria occupied they thought it best to leave him alone. He did however seem to be using a great deal of double sided sticky tape and the inners from paper towel rolls which raised a few eyebrows. However in the eyes of the simple villagers intelligence went hand in hand with eccentricity. Then the fateful day. Representatives from the UN appeared at the border demanding to see the results of their investment. Rodriquez went into hiding and Manuela put on a false moustache and pretended to be a member of the Women’s Institute on holiday from Britain. Don Miguel El Sabio stood alone to face his inquisitors. The Don didn’t seem perturbed in the slightest and joyfully led the team to the old studio where he triumphantly swung open the doors. Lurking in the shadows was a contraption consisting of an old Remitroot barrel connected via verdigris encrusted copper pipes to an old washing machine. The silence was tangible. To cover their embarrassment the UN team submitted an interim report which simply stated, ‘Valuable and ongoing work.’ Don Miguel El Sabio was elated and moved to the next stage. The acceleration of a particle, but he needed a particle to accelerate. To the Don’s befuddled mind a particle is a particle and so is a Remitroot seed. How would the particle accelerator effect the Remitroot seed? What mutations will occur within its kernel? We await the result of the first experiment.
The tongue retreated into its lair; there was a look of rapt concentration on my new bankers face, then with a grimace and his Adams apple performing an Argentinean tango in his throat – he swallowed it loudly. ‘Gurr-her-herrr!’ That obviously pleased him. Then mercifully, stretching across me to
look out of the window, he informed the bus in a loud voice that he had to get off and sped off towards the stairs, but not before instructing me to meet him on this same bus the following week when he would return my investment and ‘some more moneys’. Needless to say I avoided the bus for quite some time. The thought of what form the ‘interest’ would take, boggled my mind.

SOLTIMES JULY 2013
...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES
braben’s blog... ‘Black is Beautiful’ Someone once said that a holiday is something you take when you can’t take what you’ve been taking any longer! Well, maybe there is some truth in that, but whatever the reason, I love going on holiday. It’s great isn’t it, a few weeks, or even longer if you’re lucky, of doing nothing and enjoying every minute of it. Well that’s what most people see as the perfect holiday, but there are some who take what you may call, slightly odd, holidays. I don’t just mean willingly going camping in the middle of a wet and windy summer-well, in the UK are there any other sorts of summers? Nor do I mean those holidays that people go on that involve doing back breaking work like chopping down acres of trees for a fortnight, after which they have another three weeks off work with bad backs! No, I’ve found some holidays that are downright weird. For example, for only 3 Euros you will get to have a tour of, wait for it-the sewers of Paris. Yes, you will be led through some of the tunnels that contain the sort of stuff that you would expect to see in a sewer, but in Paris it is, allegedly, classier. I don’t think we’ll go any further with this one, except to say that it seems that there are always places available on the tour. Surprising really! Then there’s the holiday in Mexico which simulates an illegal border crossing. For very little money you can spend a day, wading up to waist deep in streams full of the sort of stuff you would have paid to see in the Paris sewer trip. You will also be shot at-but with blanks they say- and shouted at mercilessly by people pretending to be border police. I can’t really fathom why this is so popular, unless there are some who see it as useful preparation for the real thing! All we can do is thank goodness for that Graham is married well known Magic Kingdom which will to Helen and has never let us down-will it? Unfortunately not; a daughter, Alice. according to some eye witness accounts He lives part of the at one such magical location, Winnie the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, Pooh had taken on board a little too much teaching. If you wish of the wrong kind of liquid before his shift to contact Graham and ended up rolling around, destroying regarding this food stalls, visitors and children’s dreams article email: helenandg@yahoo. . It could have been worse-imagine the damage if it had been Dumbo! co.uk
Two years before the National Party gained power in 1948 and started the policy of apartheid in South Africa, Steven Bantu Biko was born. His progressive thinking father encouraged Steve to study to achieve social independence. Steve’s schooling coincided with the 1953 Bantu Education Act which enforced separate schooling for non-white Africans. It legalised the idea that black Africans were subservient to whites, only training them for manual labour. The acts author Verwoerd said at the time ‘There is no place for them (the Bantu) in the European community above the level of certain forms of labour. What is the use of teaching the Bantu child mathematics when it cannot use it in practice?” Steve Biko attended Lovedale an exclusive boarding school where Kahya his brother was also studying before Kahya was arrested and jailed for 9 months for belonging to the Pan Africanist Congress, a banned political association. Steve was questioned and although they found no wrong doing he was expelled. This started his fervour against the authorities. Biko attended the University of Natal to study as a doctor. Initially he was involved with the National Union of African Students; although supposedly multi-racial the Union was centred around the largest, white only universities so other ethnic groups were mostly ignored. In response Biko helped set up the South African Students Organisation (SASO) in 1968 and was elected President. He ignored his studies due his increased political activities so eventually he was thrown out of University. SASO’s doctrine was of Black Consciousness, aiming for political and social improvements for the oppressed black people of South Africa. The SASO became the Black Consciousness Movement. Then to include adults Biko set up the Black Peoples Convention, by 1972 both had become formidable political forces. Biko was increasingly more dangerous to the authorities and in February 1983 he was ‘banned.’ Being banned meant he couldn’t talk to more than one person at a time, nor speak to the public or media. It was now an offence to quote anything Biko said or wrote. He was restricted to the Eastern Cape his
place of birth having to report to the police weekly. The next few years saw increased protests culminating in the events of June 16th 1976, known now as the Soweto Uprising. It was initially a peaceful demonstration by students from schools and colleges protesting at a new law forcing black Africans to be taught in the Afrikaans language. Afrikaans in the words of Desmond Tutu was the ‘language of the oppressor.’ So instead the black majority spoke English. Police set attack dogs loose against the kids who stoned the dogs to death in defence. The police started shooting back leaving 23 dead on the first day. Over the next few days at least 150 more protestors were killed. The next six months saw strikes and violent protests across South Africa leaving hundreds dead. The rand devalued, the economy wobbled, Government was worried! Although not at Soweto, Steve Biko was arrested in August 1977 under the Terrorism act. Peter Gabriel’s song ‘Biko’ recounts how five officers brutally interrogated Biko for 22 hours in police room 619, Port Elizabeth putting him in a coma. Then they left him chained to a window grille for days. On September 11th 1977 he was bundled naked into a car, dying the next day in a prison hospital. The police officers who beat him were never convicted as there were apparently ‘no witnesses’ though in 1985 the hospital doctors were ruled to have behaved disgracefully. In a previous episode of the “Endless Soap” I mentioned, in passing, about attachments, what they were and whether you could upload them without “Big Brother” interference. I completely forgot to mention how to attach an attachment to your email. So here it is! I’ve been focussing on Microsoft’s Hotmail/Outlook.com email account systems because it is the one I’m most familiar with. Today, we will discover the “How To” of attachments and I will cover both Hotmail/Outlook.com and Gmail. The “How To” of Email Attachments First: Hotmail! When you enter the Hotmail/Outlook (HO from now on) site you will see, before you, the button marked “New”, from here you know how to create your email (see previous article). Next task is to attach something to this newly created email. On the ‘menu bar’ (the blue band on the top of the screen) are 5 options - ‘Send, insert, save draft, options and cancel’. When you left click on ‘Insert’ a ‘Sub-Menu’ slides down to provide you with further options. These are: ‘Files As Attachments, Pictures Inline and Share from SkyDrive’. For now click on ‘Files As Attachments’. Now before you is a standard windows search box. Use it to find the file you want to attach and send. An example: I would Double Click on ‘My Documents’, then on ‘Graphics’, Then ‘Photo’s’ and finally ‘RnR Dancing’. I am now in a directory (for those old enough to remember these!) or Folder (for everyone else) in which my favourite pictures of La Jefa (the boss) and me demo-dancing Proper Rock and Roll Jive. I pick one, or by holding down the <Ctrl> key and then clicking on many pictures, and this is then added to the list to be uploaded to the hotmail website by clicking on the OK button. Done! This will take as long as it takes depending on your upload speed which is always about 10% of your download speed. If you want to use the ‘Picture Inline’ option then before you go to the menus, put the ‘I’ bar in the position within the text exactly where you want the picture to go. Then use the menu ‘Insert’ and then ‘Picture Inline’. You will now get the same standard windows box. Following the same route through it as before and this time pick just one photo. You will see that the selected picture is inline with the text of your email. Now: Gmail! When you enter your Gmail account webpage you will see a button marked ‘Compose’. Click on this and a box opens up to allow you to create your email. After the usual ‘To:’, ‘Subject:’ and ‘message’ boxes that have to be filled, you should notice, at the bottom of the screen, what appears to be a paperclip (novel idea – paper clip to attach things with). Hover the mouse pointer over the paperclip and a number of other icon magically appear. For today just select the little “Camera”, which when you hover over it will say ‘Insert Photos’. Immediately you do another box appears and asks whether you want an image from the web or from a file on your computer. For now select the button marked “browse”. From here, everything is the same as with the Hotmail site. There you have it. When you have had a few successful attempts you will also think ‘Simplicity itself’. Next time, continuing on the theme of emails, I would like to show you a free (I love that word) program called “Thunderbird” that make the job of dealing with one or more email account really easy. Please keep those topics for article coming in. I will get to them all just as soon as possible. So until next time... INDALO BOWLING CLUB
2013 CALB Hong Kong Pairs Semi-Finals and Final Report... The Semi-final and Finals of the above competition took place at Indalo Bowling Club on Sunday the 30th June on a glorious sunny day. The finalists who had completed seven games in three groups to reach this position were from Indalo and Almeria Bowling Clubs. Group A, was won by Austin Chilly and Keith Turner, Group B, by Doreen Hall and Jamey Leggate, both from Indalo. Group C, by John Fitzgerald and Chris Ewer from Almeria. The best runner ups between all groups made up the final position to take part were husband and wife team, Allan and Mo DeBoer from Group C. The first semi-final was between Doreen Hall & Janey Leggate against Allan and Mo DeBoer. Unfortunately for Doreen and Janey, the DeBoer’s were on fire and played their way to a very comfortable win. The second Semi featured last year’s losing, finalists, Austin Crilly and Keith Turner, against the Almeria pair John Fitzgerald and Chris Ewer. This was an exciting game, nip and tuck for sixteen ends. On the seventeenth end John and Chris were holding five shots. Then Keith with his last wood fired and ended up with shot wood, resulting in them going two shots ahead. The Almeria pair was unable to score on the last end, putting Austin and Keith in the final. The Final was eagerly awaited by the spectators and they weren’t disappointed. Both teams were giving no quarter and were level on the thirteenth end. Austin and Keith were just ahead on the fifteenth, when on the next end Mo and Allan scored four shots going ahead by three shots. On the 18th Austin was holding the 2 needed to draw for an extra end, but on her last bowl Mo killed the jack which was reset on the T where their shot wood was waiting, giving Mo and Allan a well-deserved Championship win. After the final, Barry Woods standing in for Dave Jenkins, Chairman of the CALB committee, congratulated the winners and finalists for taking part in this year’s competition. He also thanked all players, John Dando for umpiring and for the administration staff for making this competition a success. A special thank you to Sue Mannall for her work ensuring the finals day went well and the spectators for giving their support. Barry then presented the winner’s trophy and prizes. Following on from last month’s article on putting, I thought I would continue on the short game theme for this month and look at chipping. This is another area of the game that can save you lots of shots on the golf course. Set Up: The set up is pretty much the same as for a full swing, except your feet can go a little closer together and have your bodyweight split in a 55:45 ratio in favour of your left foot. The ball should be positioned opposite the centre of your feet (pic 1) Swing: The length of the swing should determine the length of the shot and the through swing should be slightly longer than the backswing and should have you finishing with your chest facing the target. The length of the swing should determine the length of the shot and the through swing should be slightly longer than the backswing and should have you finishing with your chest facing the target. One of the problems golfers have with this shot is that they try to hit different distances using the same length swing but try to hit the ball harder of softer depending on the distance required. At all times there needs to be a ‘smooth acceleration’ of the club through the ball so make your swing shorter for short shots and longer for longer distances, but try to keep the pace of your through swing the same. Another issue that I see very frequently when golfers try to hit pitch shots is they try to hit the ball into the air using the dreaded ‘scoop’ action! This often leads to the ‘thin’ shots that disappear across the green. To help eradicate this try to create 2 ‘L’s’ When your left arm is parallel to the ground on the way back it should form an L shape with the shaft of the club and when you right arm is parallel to the ground on the through swing this should also form an L shape with the shaft of the club... Happy golfing....

Boat Fishing: Before the big winds and waves started ‘Orca Steve’ managed to get out on a couple of trips. The sea settled nicely for perfect conditions. The wind was very light until mid-afternoon most days giving him the opportunity to drift as well as anchor covering a lot of ground in a bid to find the fish. It seemed most of the activity on the fish finder sonar was in the vicinity of the Rio Aguas near the big 4**** hotels in shallow water from 50ft to 130ft. Once Steve found the fish the anchor was dropped and a bag of chum sent down the anchor rope to keep the fish interested. The ‘Fortuna lads’ had a great day accompanied by Shane from the UK and caught some nice red snappers, decent pandoras, Spanish mackerel, pickerels, bogues, combers and the odd weaver. Lou, Steve and Harry had a fish well full to finish the day and along with Shane had a nice photo taken of them with red snappers back in the Garrucha dock. (See photo) There were large predator fish jumping all week with some very close to the boat but Steve wasn’t tackled up for them. The sun fish are around at the moment and Steve saw some large ones lazily breaking the surface from time to time. Steve also
had two small whales pass by the boat which were more interested in travelling than stopping to feed but it was a great sight for the lads to see and made the trip even more interesting. Shore Fishing: I know of nobody who managed a bait or lure in the water from the shore this week. Coarse Fishing: Keith of the Los Gallardos ‘Grumps’ fished Lake Argos and told me he had two large carp in his swim, he hooked and lost the first but bagged the second weighing 9.3/4lbs, a good fish for Argos for sure. A message to ‘Grumps’ ‘Silverback’, the lads say stick to fishing and forget any more thoughts of a new off road hobby. ‘Puentes Ray’ made his weekly visit to Puentes on Friday, a beautiful morning and just breaking light when he arrived (6am) with no wind he set up his usual waggler and single corn hook bait and started to hit fish straight away, mostly around 1lb. After about three he hours decided to move and give a feeder a try using a new corn flavoured carp pellet from our favourite Repsol garage as hook bait. Definitely a good move as he was into first carp within seconds just under 5lb followed by a 4lber and 2

threes. For about an hour it went crazy with all good fish then they moved off and Ray started getting the smaller ones again. ‘Bryan V’ fished a trout match on a river which joins Negratin to Bolera, I think it’s called Guadalentin and run by “socio club deportivo de pesca” (Google it) He got there early and walked the bank (as you do) with trout topping everywhere and looking good for the fly. After twenty minutes into the match the guy to his left had four trout on this stupid (Ray said lol) florescent paste and they didn’t want to know the fly. So, ‘if you can’t beat em’ etc., Bryan got his spinner out and joined the fray and over the next ninety minutes he had seven trout. For the second half of the match it was too hot and too many bodies plonking around on the bank. Bryan had his biggest fish in the last five minutes and came twelfth out of more than fifty anglers. His weight of 3300g was 100g short of being in the prizes and his was the biggest fish until a guy beat him by 50g, so near yet so far? Bryan said “Not in the least, it was a great day and exceeded my expectations tenfold” The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. For up to date information on any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. th 19 Hole Golf Society Thursday 27th June in beautiful weather conditions and the
Aguilon Course in as good a condition as ever, it was time for our Monthly Medal Round. With an exceptional turnout of 28 players the competition, potentially, would be a hard fought affair, and it was. With 12 players Nett scores in the 70s it was probably the closest fought medal round to date. Dividing the players into 2 groups allowed for a very competitive Ladies division and equally so the Men’s division. In the Ladies division Ellen Lea produced a great performance to win comfortably with a Nett 71 from an ever improving Nekana on Nett 78. The Men’s division produced 4 scores of Nett 75 but Nick Pogson with a really cool 74 took first place followed by Dave Denyer on count back from Geoff Smith. Unusually we had no Two’s, which might have reflected the hardness of the Greens. Terry Caddick was quickly facing a dilemma; dressed in a very fetching pink outfit he was offered the option to play in the Ladies division but declined gracefully (I think that’s what all those expletives meant). Another success for the Ladies was Nearest the Pin on the tricky 10th hole by Christine Dow, well done Christine. Arboleas Club de Bowling The 3rd round of the Club Championship was bowled yesterday,
Sunday 30th June at the Amigos Bowling Centre at Arboleas which is sponsored by Ibex Insurance. The results proved that all the participants have an even chance in this handicap tournament and it was Alex Bain who seized this opportunity and won with a total handicap score of 637 for the 3 game series. A late charge from Mike Brosnan was not quite enough to overhaul Alex and he was defeated by a single pin in securing 2nd place with an excellent series of 636. 3rd place went to John Cannon with a creditable series of 615, himself having had a winning chance entering the final frame of the match. Congratulations to all the bowlers who turned out for the latest tournament and on seeing this result will be eager themselves to take their chance in the next round of the Championship that is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 1st September.
Marina Phoenix Golf Society Monday 24th June was an individual stableford with winners in both the ladies and mens divisions showing improved form. There were 2’s prizes for Maxine Mayhew and Brian Couper on the 5th and Ann Kavanagh and Frank Varey on the 17th. Thursdays team competition was better ball pairs, combined, in fourball teams. The results for Wednesday were no full competition but a roll up won by Mike Picken. Boxers GS at Mar Menor True to their tradition of visiting courses a little further afield
than most, on 27th June Boxers made a return visit to Mar Menor in Murcia. The coach driver was obviously unhappy with his load as he insisted on setting his satnav for San Javier airport, however he got to the course in time for tee off. There were rumours that he was getting his own back on grumbling passengers as a faulty aircon unit on the way home had everyone cooking. Speaking of cooking, Hilton Smith was the red hot overall winner, taking the tricky course apart with a fine 39 points to take division 3 from Pam Partridge’s 37. Order of Merit leader Tony Harwin took division 1 with 37, avoiding the bunkers he might not have been able to see out from, leaving Martin Fisk to trail with 33. Peter Tapsell 36 and Roy Lewis 33 were the division 2 filling in the sandwich. NTP’s were won by Paul Holley, Tony Harwin and Mark Newall. July kicks off with two meetings in a week – the regular Stableford at Aguilon on the 11th and a new Past v Present Captain’s team event at Alboran on the 16th. The second stableford will be at Altoreal on the 24th. The other main event for Boxers members will be the tournament in memory of our Vice Captain Steve Gilmore to be held at Alboran on July 6th. This is an open competition with many great prizes and is attracting golfers of all standards from English and Spanish societies to pay their respects by having a great day out. Boxers would like to offer their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Forum member Harry Thornton who, like Steve, succumbed to a heart attack on the golf course at Aguilon last week - another tragedy. Guests and new members are always welcome to join Boxers exciting and varied calendar of sport and social events. before half time. The vociferously partisan crowd booed Spain’s every pass, revelling in their every error and baying for blood at every foul committed. They were booed again as they reemerged onto the pitch for the second half, and two minutes later found themselves not two, but three goals down. To compound Spain’s misery, Sergio Ramos missed a penalty just after the break and the noise inside the Maracaná stadium built to an unprecendented crescendo. The final nail in the coffin on this miserable
night for Spain was the sending off of Gerard Piqué in the 68th minute for bringing Neymar down as last man, but irreversible damage was already done and there was no way back for the reigning World and European Champions. Brazil have not lost a competitive match on home soil since 1975 and Spain hasn’t beaten them either home or away, other than in friendlies, since 1934. Sunday’s result will only serve to further stoke the fire of those who believe this Brazil team is ready to take Spain’s crown at next year’s World Cup.

Brazil brought Spain’s 29-game unbeaten record in competititve matches to an abrupt end last night, stunning the World Champions with a breathtaking performance to win 3-0 in the final of the Confederations Cup. The host nation put on an impressive display of attacking football, coming out of the blocks fast and furious and scoring after just two minutes. Far from being a freak moment of domination, Fred’s early goal set the scene for the rest of the match, with Neymar doubling Brazil’s advantage in characteristic charismatic style just
