King attends to 16 ambassadors before heading for operating theatre today KING Juan Carlos is set to go under knife again today for surgery on his hip, and has joked about how his ‘mechanics’ should get themselves ready as he is going into the ‘garage’ for another ‘service and repairs’. But before heading for hospital today, the monarch had a meeting with 16 new ambassadors this morning and was heard saying in French to the Moroccan one, Ahed Ould Souilem, that he had received a call from his good friend King Mohammed VI asking after his health. “See you all tomorrow – you can come along and be mechanics if you want,” the King said to reporters at the Zarzuela Palace

before setting off. He will be operated on today for an infection in his left hip-replacement at the Quirón University Hospital in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid). Although this type of surgery has a typical convalescence period of between two and six months, the Royal household says the monarch will be attending to his official duties within no time at all. He has dismissed speculations that he may abdicate in favour of his son, Crown Prince Felipe, due to his ongoing aches and pains and operations, saying he has no intention of doing so. Petrol goes down in price

Petrol and diesel prices have fallen after three consecutive weeks of hikes. The average cost of petrol per litre throughout the country – having gone down by 1.6 per cent – currently sits at 1.453 euros, whilst diesel has gone down by 0.3 per cent to 1.397 euros. But diesel still costs an average of 2.5 per cent more than it did at the beginning of the year, and petrol is 3.7 per cent more expensive than in January 2013. At the moment, a car with a 55-litre capacity fuel tank will pay 79.90 euros to fill up with petrol – compared to 81.20 euros a week ago – or 76.80 euros for a full tank of diesel. The fall in prices is partly due to tensions in Libya and Syria, and Spain’s costs of fuel per litre bought at service stations continue to be lower than the EU average. Petrol per litre in the European Union typically costs 1.597 euros, or 1.624 euros in the Eurozone, whilst diesel costs 1.475 euros and 1.457 euros respectively. Spain’s lower petrol and diesel prices – despite hikes having been seen in the past year due to the IVA rise from 18 to 21 per cent, higher regional taxes and new levies on biodiesel – are mainly due to less fiscal pressure on the commodity than elsewhere in Europe.

Baby crushed to death on luggage belt at Alicante-Elche airport A family holiday ended in tragedy before it had begun last Thursday when a fivemonth-old baby lost his life in a luggage carousel accident at Alicante-Elche airport. He and his parents were due to spend their break in Dénia (Alicante province) on the northern Costa Blanca. His mother, who is originally from the USA, had flown in from London and is believed to have placed the child on a luggage belt which was not moving or in use to give her a free hand to collect her bags. But the baby’s weight is thought to have caused the conveyor to start moving automatically as it would if luggage were

to be placed on it. He lost his life after becoming wedged into the rollers in the part where the bags come through onto the belt. The child was carried behind the rubber flaps, after which he was sitting on a series of rollers, where he became entangled. His Canadian father, the mother’s husband, was in arrivals waiting for his wife and son when he was told about the tragedy. Police have been investigating the incident, but based upon CCTV recordings, they consider it was simply an unfortunate accident.

Judge refuses to reopen Valencia metro crash case

A call to reopen the trial over the devastating underground train crash in Valencia in 2006 has been thrown out by the city court. The prosecutor in charge of the case applied to the Court of Instruction number 21 for investigations into the metro accident, which made international breaking news after killing 43 people and leaving another 47 injured, to restart in response to popular demand. According to the judge, no new evidence or legal argument justifying the reopening of the case has come to light, although this verdict is open to appeal. Survivors, and relatives of those who died in the crash on the central Line 1, which leads from Valencia North Station and eventually to the airport – although the track extension to the airport was not open back then, on July 3, 2006 – have always claimed there had been a cover-up in the initial analysis.

The Valencian regional Parliament claimed, after a full investigation, that the driver, who also died in the accident, had been travelling too fast. But accident survivors and families of the deceased said a speed-hump on the track would have prevented this and made it impossible for the train to be breaking the speed limit. They also said the train had derailed at least once prior to crashing. However, the judge said these claims had not been backed up by an independent engineering consultant. The Association of Victims of the July 3 Metro Crash (AVM3J) are staging demonstrations on the third day of every month in the city-centre Plaza de la Virgen, where they have so far been joined by thousands of Valencia residents, calling for the case to be reopened.

Ella

I was born into a musical family so I suppose I was weaned on music from the beginning. My great Uncle owned a music shop. My Mum, who also played the piano, worked there as did my Grandfather. I had an Aunt who sang and an Uncle who was an Irish tenor so you may say yes, it was in my blood. During my childhood I did Irish dancing and sang in various children’s choirs and other musical events. I moved to England with my husband and we made our home in Northolt, Middlesex. The first thing I did was join an amateur operatic society and over the years (25 of them) I had various leads. We left London in 1997 to live in Southport and the first thing I did, yes, you guessed it, was to find a local society which I did… in fact, two. We came to Spain in 2004 but sadly I lost my darling husband Ken in 2006 which was very traumatic BUT my music, among other things like gardening, being with my two little dogs (Megan and Benji) and amazing cat Mr O’Malley, keeps me going and I now sing with The Voices of Almanzora. Will I ever retire, what

do you think?

Peter Hands

Of all the things I wanted to aspire to in my life, joining a choir at the age of 69 was never even on the horizon. The last time I did any singing in public was as a guitarist in a pop group in the early 60’s.I suppose I can boast that in 1964 I wrote and recorded a song with the group, and we won a competition to appear on a TV show called Ready Steady Winner. Needless to say that was our 15 minutes of fame and we went no further After a failed career as a pop star I spent nearly 28 years as a policeman, before joining what was the Home Office Forensic Science Service, as Head of Training,.I eventually retired for good in 2006 and I moved to Spain with my wife and our menagerie of animals to live in the campo between Cantoria and Fines Shortly after coming to Spain I became heavily involved in amateur dramatics, and have acted with several companies taking parts in farce, serious drama and pantomime. Joining the choir came about at my wife’s suggestion during an outdoor musical event when I must have got carried away during the “sing along” session. For me, the best thing about singing with The Voices of Almanzora is that I don’t find it either physically or mentally demanding, but the end results are incredibly satisfying.

Health ministry launches patient card recognised all over Spain to replace regional-only model

A healthcare card which will be recognised in all federal regions in Spain will be launched on Friday, says the PP government. According to a report by ThinkSpain, at present, all those entitled to State medical assistance hold a SIP card, but the individual format of each one is only valid in the patient’s autonomous region – such as Andalucía, Murcia, the Comunidad Valenciana, and so on. This can cause problems if a resident is on holiday or travelling on business to another part of Spain, since their medical data cannot be called up using their existing SIP card. And those who are ‘resident’ in two different regions, because of owning properties they share their time between equally in each one, or working away during the week and being registered on the census in their place of business and main home, hold two SIP cards, which can cause admin headaches. Health minister Ana Mato plans to create a different type of card which will be useable throughout the mainland and islands and in the two Spanish-owned enclaves on the northern Moroccan coast, Ceuta and Melilla. This means doctors will be able to access medical data for all patients they attend to, even if they are temporary visitors from another region. When announcing this in Parliament, although the opposition raised no objections, they heavily criticised Mato for her restrictions on access to free healthcare. The socialists accused her of ‘medical apartheid’, since non-registered immigrants from outside the EU are unable to be treated. In many cases, this is because their residence card has expired and they are in the process of renewing it, or cannot do so because they have been denied this due to not having work – even where they own property and have immediate family in Spain. And where immigrants enter Spain through the ‘back door’ from third-world countries and slip through the net, they have sometimes been found to be suffering from tropical diseases or highly-contagious conditions such as HIV or tuberculosis, which can be fatal to them and others if not treated. Also, self-employed workers who stop paying their ‘stamp’ due to lack of income are only entitled to free State healthcare for 90 days, after which they must either register on the dole – meaning they are not allowed to earn money from any type of work – or restart their stamp payments. This does not apply where the ex-worker lives with a partner or immediate family member who is still paying into the Social Security system by having a job or being

Animal-lovers Present 85,000 Signatures Against Bull-fighting To Madrid And Brussels

A petition with 85,000 signatures and an open letter addressed to the country’s leaders of the PP and PSOE has been handed in personally in Madrid calling for the abolition of one of the largest and most bloodthirsty bull-fighting exhibitions in Spain. The Toro de la Vega, which took place in the village of Tordesillas (Valladolid province) in central Spain on Tuesday despite over 15,000 people protesting against it in the streets of the capital at the weekend, has been a source of contention with animal-lovers for many years.

self-employed, or in a similarly-recognised situation, such as being on a State retirement or sick pension, maternity leave, or registered as unemployed, since in most cases the ex-worker can register on the Social Security as a dependant of their partner or relative. If a Social Security contributor has children living at home under the age of 26, these are automatically covered by their parents’ Social Security if they do not have a number in their own right. State pensioners from any country are automatically entitled to apply for free healthcare provided they are legally resident in Spain. For those who do not qualify for healthcare, emergencies – which the hospital or health centre may define if borderline – pregnancy, childbirth, or any conditions whatsoever affecting children aged under 18 are automatically covered. EU citizens with Spain as their main residence who have held a ‘green certificate’, or official residence document since April 2012 at the latest are normally entitled to healthcare automatically. Anyone who is not sure whether they qualify can carry out a simple, untraceable check on the Social Security website, or phone or visit their local Social Security office. Note: The information concerning healthcare entitlement has been supplied by the Social Security office in Gandia (Valencia) and is correct at the time of publication

Silvia Barceló, head of the independent Partido Animalista (PACMA), or Pro-Animal Party – which currently does not have any representation in Parliament – says members wished to express their ‘deep disappointment and discontent’ that both of Spain’s main political parties could ‘allow, in the 21st century’, for bulls to be ‘lynched and executed with spears for entertainment purposes’. She called for both the socialists – who are in power in Tordesillas itself – and the PP, in office both in the central government and the regional Parliament of Castilla y León, where Tordesillas is located – to ‘listen to the clamouring of the people’ and review legislation ‘which permits such barbaric actions’. Sra Barceló was accompanied by around 10 other members of PACMA and five dogs on leads between them. She said that although their party ran for elections every four years, they were not connected to any political outfit since ‘even IU [Izquierda Unida, or United Left] supports bulls being killed’. On Monday, two representatives of PACMA travelled to Brussels to hand in a copy of the petition to Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament. They asked Mr Schulz to ‘appeal to Spain’ for the Toro de la Vega and other bull-fighting to be abolished, since Article 13 of the European Union Treaty ‘recognises animals as sensitive beings and not as mere objects’. PACMA’s weekend protest in Madrid saw them snapping bull-fighting spears in front of the PP and PSOE headquarters.

Eurovegas project “at risk”

Madrid stands to lose out on Eurovegas if the central government doesn’t act quickly to change the anti-smoking laws, regional premier Ignacio González warned last Tuesday. “We run the risk that Eurovegas will be moved to another site,” González told esRadio in an interview. According to a report by El Pais, the Partido Popular premier revealed that PM Mariano Rajoy promised on 2 occasions to push for a relaxation of the smoking regulation after holding meetings with Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson. But so far Rajoy, also of the PP, has not kept to his commitment that the proposal would be ready by September, he said. The sprawling multi-million-euro casino, convention and hotel project, which is to be built in Alcorcón, had been received with much fanfare by the PP regional government when

Adelson awarded his latest Las Vegas-themed development to Madrid over Barcelona. Madrid officials believe the project will create some 250,000 jobs over the next decade. But the initial phase of the project has gotten off to a rocky start. The central government has not begun to expropriate the land where Eurovegas will be built and financing has been tight. Last week when asked about the changes to the law, Deputy PM Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said there “are certain procedures to modifying” legislation that “don’t necessarily have to come from the Cabinet.” “We all have to be aware that this is the most important investment that could be made in Europe in the coming years,” González said. “We have to do all that is possible to ensure that it is built.”

Spain Arrests Terrorist Recruiter

Spain arrested a man in its North African enclave of Ceuta on Monday accused of recruiting fighters for rebel groups in Syria’s civil war, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Spain arrested eight members of the group in June in Ceuta. Laarbi eluded capture at the time.

Spanish authorities said the man led a group that has sent dozens of people to Syria, including minors, from Ceuta and cities around Morocco.

Spanish officials accused the group of sending fighters to an arm of al Qaeda in Syria and said some of the recruits took part in suicide attacks and others had joined training camps. The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have died in the Syrian conflict since March 2011.

“His name is Yassin Ahmed Laarbi, who was a fugitive and wanted by the High Court for belonging to a terrorist organization,” the statement said.

Islamist fighters, including veterans of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya and Libya, have joined the rebels with the aim of toppling President Bashar al-Assad.

Spanish Banks Pressure Government to defer losses

Executives are reportedly lobbying parliament to change potentially worthless tax assets into governmentguaranteed tax credits that would bolster the banks’ capital positions. Such campaigns are the latest examples of banks seeking new ways to make their financial standing appear stronger, without relying entirely on costly initiatives such as issuing new shares or selling lucrative assets.

However, analysts have argued that such moves don’t actually improve the banks’ abilities to weather future difficulties, and that such measures could further sap public and investor confidence in the European banking industry. Whilst the Professor of Finance at Stanford University’s business school has described the proposal as “disturbing”, Bank

Executives consider it both logical and fair to change the current rules to their advantage. “I do not think this is a gimmick,” Bank of Spain Governor Luis Linde said in an interview. “This is to apply rules that are already applied in other countries.” As far as Spain is concerned, the issue revolves around so-called ‘deferred tax assets’ - which is permitted

by International accounting standards when financial institutions report financial losses. Once back in profit, these companies can then deduct these losses from the taxes shown on their financial statements. Analysts estimate that Spanish Banks have now accumulated €50 billion of deferred tax assets. The question is when (or if) they will ever be paid back ?

He added: “We believe the opportunity to grow in Spain is still huge as the branded budget hotel sector represents just 2% of total hotel stock. This is substantially lower than other European countries such as France which is 24% and the UK which currently stands at just under 20%.

Sagrada Familia to be completed by 2026

Orange Spain complains about Telefonica Orange Spain has lodged a complaint with the country’s competition regulator over a tie-up between rivals Telefonica and TeliaSonera’s Yoigo, the company said on Monday.

Jordi Fauli, the Architect currently in charge of Barcelona’s Sagrada Famila, has confirmed that the Basilica should be completed by the year 2026. Construction began in 1882 under the auspices of legendary Antoni Gaudi and was ambitious from the outset, with it’s 18 towering spires dedicated to the 12 disciples, the 4 Apostles, Jesus and Mary. Although there is around onethird of the project still to be completed, Fauli announced that, if the rate of funding continues in line with construction work, the building will be finalised in just 13 years. The ‘Minor Basilica’ - which differs from a Cathedral as it does not have it’s own Bishop - was officially inaugurated by Pope Benedict XVI on his visit to Spain in 2010. Despite being one of Spain’s most important places of worship for the Catholic faith, the Vatican is yet to put it’s hand in it’s cassock, as all construction work is funded by entry fees and donations from the public.

In a report by Reuters (courtesy of Tumbit.com) Spain’s biggest mobile operator Telefonica signed a deal with 4th-biggest provider Yoigo in August, allowing it to use its smaller rival’s superfast 4G mobile network in exchange for access to Telefonica’s fixed line broadband network. The move was a jolt to Spain’s highly competitive telecoms market where operators are racing to beat rivals with low prices, often by marketing bundled services offering mobile and fixed-line services. Around a quarter of Spain’s workforce is currently unemployed. Orange believes the tie-up hurts market competition by removing Yoigo as a contender and turning it into an offshoot of Telefonica, helping the former monopoly to gain more market share in fixed-line services, according to a company source. The agreement between the 2 rivals damages other players in the market and Orange wants it suspended, the source said. Yoigo was previously unable to offer broadband services but is now able to compete with companies like Orange and Vodafone offering bundled services. Telefonica at the time did not have 4G frequencies and was unable to compete on that front, though it now plans to launch its own 4G network in Spain. Orange and Vodafone teamed up earlier this year to build their own fibre optic network in Spain and signed a deal at the beginning of July to have access in the interim to Telefonica’s fibre optic network so they can offer their customers faster broadband services.

Rajoy: “Spain is out of recession, but not out of the crisis”

SPANISH president Mariano Rajoy has told The Wall Street Journal that the country is ‘out of recession’, but ‘not out of the financial crisis’. The PP leader says his current aim is a ‘rigorous recovery’ which allows Spain to ‘create employment’. He has also stated his intentions to stand for election again at the end of 2015. “I have no intention of retiring, but my party will decide,” he announced. Rajoy is said to have professed to be ‘reasonably satisfied’ with steps taken by the European Union to tackle the financial crisis,

and has congratulated German Chancellor, Angela Merkel on her re-election. “Things are going in the right direction,” Rajoy stated. The head of State says he believes the Spanish economy will grow by between 0.5 and one per cent next year, but this would not be a magical cure for the 26-percent jobless figures straight away. “Improvements will happen step by step,” the president concluded. When asked about the EU bank bail-out, the PP leader said the Spanish banking system is now ‘more transparent, more solvent and has better capital funding’ following the loan from the European Central Bank and, when questioned about the possibility of needing further funding, said: “If you’re asking me about the situation as at today, I would tell you that Spain will not need to increase the EU funding received in 2014.” As for the thorny issue of the Bárcenas slush-fund case, which Rajoy has always denied, he

Sugar is ‘the most dangerous drug of our time’

Sugary foods and drinks should come with a smoking-style health warning, according to a leading Dutch health expert. According to a report by Mail Online, Paul van der Velpen, head of Amsterdam’s health service, said that sugar is ‘the most dangerous drug of our time’. The health chief - from a city that has a famously liberal attitude to

cannabis - added that sugar is a drug like alcohol and tobacco and that its use should be discouraged. Writing on a public health website, he said that users should be made aware of the dangers. He wrote: ‘This may seem exaggerated and far-fetched, but sugar is the most dangerous drug of this time and is easy to obtain.’ He added: ‘Just as with smoking

labels, soft drinks and sweet products should come with the warning that sugar is addictive and bad for the health.’ Mr Van der Velpen wrote that more and more people are becoming overweight and that this is increasing healthcare costs at a time when many governments are trying to save money. He added that obesity could be tackled by encouraging people to take more exercise, but that changing people’s diets would be more effective. He cites research which suggests that when people are eating fats and proteins they stop when they are full, but that when they are eating sugars they will keep eating until their stomachs hurt. He believes this is because sugar is addictive and is ‘as hard to give up as smoking’. As a result, he says sugar should be taxed in the same way alcohol and cigarettes are. He also suggests that the amount of sugar that can be added to processed food should be regulated.

How a salt jab could be more effective for lower back pain than steroids A saline injection in the spine could be more effective than steroids for treating lower back pain, a new study has revealed. Spinal pain is a leading cause of disability in the industrialised world and epidural steroid injections - the most common nonsurgical treatment - have been the standard treatment for more than 50 years. Yet the alternative spinal injection in the space around the spinal cord may provide better relief than steroids which can have adverse side effects. Steroids raise blood sugar in diabetic back patients, slow the healing of wounds and accelerate bone disease in older women, the Johns Hopkins University study found.

Professor of Anaesthesiology Steven Cohen at the U.S. university said: ‘Just injecting liquid into the epidural space appears to work. ‘This shows us that most of the relief may not be from the steroid, which everyone worries about.’ The research was prompted when more than 740 people in 20 U.S. states became ill with fungal meningitis and 55 people died after getting epidural injections of contaminated steroids last year. Although better oversight might reduce that risk, patients can only get a limited number of steroid injections each year, even if their pain returns. Spinal pain is a leading cause of disability in the industrialised world and epidural steroid injections - the most common nonsurgical treatment - have been the standard treatment for more than 50 years Professor Cohen said it was too soon to recommend that patients stop receiving epidural steroids, but added that their analysis also suggests that smaller steroid doses can be just as beneficial. Fellow researcher Dr Mark

Bicket said larger scale studies were needed to determine whether steroid alternatives can be just as helpful for back pain patients. He said: ‘Our evidence does support the notion that, for now, reducing the amount of steroids for patients at risk may be advisable.’ The review covered medical records of 3,641 patients from 43 studies conducted in October 2012 and compared epidural steroid injections to other sorts of epidural and intramuscular injections. Professor Cohen said the new analysis suggested that decades of mixed results of research on epidural steroid injections may have been due to the use of saline or anaesthetic injections as the comparison ‘placebo’ treatment. He said: ‘It’s likely that those studies were actually comparing two treatments, rather than placebo versus treatment. Researchers may be wasting millions of dollars and precious time on such studies.’ The findings are published in the latest edition of the journal Anaesthesiology.

EU to investigate Gibraltar dispute next week A1 Sky Television Systems PM David Cameron condemned the threat and said Britain was not prepared to discuss Gibraltar’s sovereignty. Opposition parties in Spain and Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo have accused Spain’s ruling centre-right government of using the conflict to distract voters from the weak economy and a corruption scandal involving senior politicians.

The EU will send a team to investigate the border dispute between Spain and Gibraltar next week, Britain’s Foreign Office said on Tuesday. In a report by Reuters (courtesy of Tumbit.com) officials from the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, will visit the British overseas territory on September 25 to look into what caused a summer of tension at the frontier that has strained relations between Madrid and London. Spain lays claim to the

territory, which has a population of 30,000, which it ceded to Britain by treaty 300 years ago. The team will “assess the border controls, free movement of people and goods, including fraud and smuggling”, the Foreign Office said, citing an EU document given to its officials in Brussels. They will also check Spanish complaints that Gibraltar impeded its fishing boats by dropping concrete blocks into disputed waters off the territory. Gibraltar said it

had created an artificial reef in the Mediterranean to protect fish stocks. “We welcome this confirmation that a monitoring mission will be sent,” a Foreign Office spokesman said. “We stand ready to offer all necessary support to ensure that the mission can conduct its investigation successfully.” Spain tightened border controls over the summer in retaliation for the reef, causing long tailbacks, and threatened to take further action, including a €50 border levy.

You will need to consult your accountant regarding possible inheritance tax obligations in the UK but in Spain, it is clear that you do not pay inheritance tax on the account in Jersey. The law in Spain is simple: If the heir is a Spanish resident he/she pays inheritance tax on anything he/she receives anywhere in the world, (unless bilateral agreements with the country where the assets are situated say otherwise which is not the case with the UK.). If the heir is non-resident of Spain he/she only pays inheritance tax in Spain on the assets he receives that are situated in Spain at the time of death.

Fall in House Prices Moderates in Second Quarter

The National Statistics Institute reported on Friday that house prices fell by 0.8% in the second quarter of the year compared to the previous quarter, representing the most moderate decline since the fourth quarter of 2010. Thus, the fall in housing prices has moderated, after the pronounced decline of 6.6% registered between January and March, the biggest quarterly decline recorded since 2007, the year in which the National Statistics Institute began developing this index. Specifically, Europa Press reported that second-hand home prices decreased by 0.1% compared with the first quarter, while the price of new housing fell by 2.4%. Year-on-year (second quarter of

2013 over the same quarter of 2012), the price of housing also moderated its decline to 12%, compared with the 14.3% annual decline experienced in the first quarter. Housing prices have now accumulated 21 consecutive quarters in which they have registered negative annual rates. The prices began to fall in the second quarter of 2008 (-0.3%), and since then the trend has not been reversed. The House Price Index published by the National Statistics Institute complies with the requirements of Eurostat and complements the report published quarterly by the Ministry of Development. Among its objectives is to serve as a point of comparison between Member States in terms of housing prices. For the latest property news go to www.kyero.com

Brussels Seeks Compensation for those Affected by Old Coastal Law expropriation by application of the Coastal Act”. According to the report – which was approved with 16 votes in favour, three against, and six abstentions – such compensation “should reflect the value of the property.” They also recommended to the Spanish authorities that they improve co-operation with the various regions, in order to promote and regenerate the coastal environment, “which has frequently been severely degraded, on many occasions due to frequent and excessive construction works and real estate projects of proven illegality”. According to the demands called for in the report: “protected coastal zones should not be used any more to build new properties, buildings or houses”. Similarly, the MEPs called for the data in the land and property registers to be updated and that “all owners with interests in the areas of demarcation are properly informed about their rights and their possibilities of access to justice”. On the other hand, El Mundo reported that the Committee recognised in the text “the significant efforts undertaken by the Government to approve the new coastal law and resolve most of the current problems”, such as “the defenseless situation that many Europeans found themselves in when building in good faith on the coast” as well as “reconciling Spanish coastal protection with economic growth”. The European Parliament Petitions Committee has called for a fair compensation system for all owners whose houses were demolished or expropriated under the old Spanish Coastal Law. This is set out in a report, approved by the majority of the members of the Committee, who made a visit to Madrid a few months ago to discuss the reform of the Coastal Act with the various Spanish authorities and organisations, and consider whether it violates European

laws on environmental protection and private property. The Parliament has received numerous complaints in recent years from European citizens affected. The text of the report states that the MEPs “recommend that the Spanish authorities establish a system of full and fair financial compensation for all legal owners whose property has been the subject of demolition or

However, in another report, also approved by the Petitions Committee, the MEPs expressed their fear that “the new law does not solve the problems of the petitioners”. Parliamentary sources told Spanish international news agency, Efe, that the MEPs are confident future cases will be resolved with the new law, but not the complaints made prior to its approval. The flu jab

Flu vaccination by injection, commonly known as the ‘flu jab’ is available every year to protect adults (and some children) at risk of flu and its complications. Flu can be unpleasant, but if you are otherwise healthy it will usually clear up on its own within a week. However, flu can be more severe in certain people such as: • anyone over the age of 65 • pregnant women • children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease) • children and adults with weakened immune systems Anyone in these risk groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so it’s recommended that they have a flu vaccine every year to protect them. How the flu jab works Studies have shown that the flu jab definitely works and will help prevent you getting the flu. However, it won’t stop all flu virus’s and the level of protection may vary between people, so it’s not a 100% guarantee that you’ll be flu-free. Over time, protection from the injected flu vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains often change. So, new flu vaccines are produced each year which is why people advised to have the flu jab need it every year too. Flu jab side effects Serious side effects of the injected flu vaccine are very rare. You may have a slight temperature and aching muscles for a couple of days after having the jab, and your arm may be a bit sore where you were injected. When to have a flu jab? The best time to have a flu vaccine is in the autumn, from the beginning of October to early November. The flu jab for 2013/14 Each year, the viruses that are most likely to cause flu are identified in advance and vaccines are made to match them as closely as possible. The vaccines are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The 2013/14 vaccine protects against three types of flu virus. This year’s flu jab protects against: • H1N1 – the strain of flu that caused the swine flu pandemic in 2009 • H3N2 – a strain of flu that can infect birds and mammals and was active in 2011 • B/Massachusetts/2 – a strain of flu that was active in 2012 Is there anyone who shouldn’t have the flu jab? Most adults can have the injected flu vaccine, but you should avoid it if you have had a serious allergic reaction to a flu jab in the past. People who have egg allergy may be at increased risk of reaction to the injectable flu vaccine because some flu jabs are made using eggs.

mother. However, public awareness and sensitivity has changed for the better in Spain. It is extremely encouraging to see how many volunteers come to the shelter on Saturdays to help walk the dogs, bath them and groom them. It is also encouraging that more and more dogs are being adopted here in Spain. Great progress has been made at the shelter providing comfort and help to the dogs during the last year or so, thanks to the President, Marina, the Directors and all the volunteers. However, very little official aid is provided to the shelter. In fact with the crisis, the financial aid has been reduced by half, and the shelter suffers from a severe lack of funds. The worry of how to make ends meet is constant. There is always the need to provide food and veterinary assistance for the shelter’s 400 inhabitants. No explanation of the workings of the shelter can be complete without an enormous vote of thanks to Erika, whose tireless love for, and dedication to, these abandoned creatures has been no short of outstanding. Erika is the person in charge of the shelter and has been literally living for the dogs for the last 15 years. She gave up a good job in Germany to take charge of the shelter and all the thanks in the world would never be enough. Don’t take our word for it, however. Just take a look at the picture of Erika and her adoring friends. From a special human being to a special dog, Grandpa PEDRO, who is estimated to be 12 years old. PEDRO, a Belgian Shepherd mix, was rescued from a miserable life chained next to a hut. It was expected that PEDRO would pass his days placidly in the shelter. However due to a stroke of luck he has been provided with a ticket to Germany to a special care shelter for old and mistreated dogs where he will receive all the special care and attention that he so much deserves. He is being pepped up with vitamins so he will be able to enjoy his new life to the full. Feel like helping this marvellous work? Details as always from Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com

Eurozone Construction Sector Rose by 0.3% in July The European Commission statistics office, Eurostat, reported last week that, in July, production in the construction sector grew by 0.3% in the eurozone, and by 0.7% in the European Union (EU) compared with the preceding month. In June, this sector registered an increase in production of 0.9% in the countries of the eurozone and 0.6% among the countries of the EU. El Economista reported that, in annual terms, production fell by 1.2% in the eurozone, year-on-year, and by 1.1% in the EU. In Spain, however, construction activity increased again in July compared to the same period of 2012, by 2.9%, according to the data published by Eurostat. This positive percentage is exceeded only by the year-on-year increase registered for Romania (+14.2%). Also registering positive annual

The monthly improvement was driven by the increase in the construction of buildings, of 1.1% in the eurozone and by 1.3% in the EU countries, but this development was offset by the decline in civil engineering production, by 0.2% in the eurozone and 0.5% in the EU. The countries which registered the greatest increases in production in July compared to June were: Romania (8.6%); Portugal (5.1%); Poland (5%) and the Czech Republic (4.9%), while the sharpest declines were registered for Sweden (4.1%); Spain and Hungary (both 1.6%) and Slovenia (0.5%). ...FOOD NEWS...FOOD NEWS... Yogurt, and salad, and fruit juice, oh my!

Packaged vegetable juice, yogurt and Vitamin Water contain up to five times as much sugar as a Krispy Kreme doughnut, an eye-opening new study has revealed. Health conscious consumers are likely to shun the sweet treats but Credit Suisse discovered some seemingly healthier options are actually more sugar-laden than the deep fried rings. In a report by Mail Online, of a list of 15 foods—some healthier than others— the delicious doughnut, which contains 10 grams of sugar, is actually the least sweet. Above it are some surprising products with shocking amounts of sugar. Near the top is a salad from California Pizza Kitchen that contains a hard to swallow 45 grams—or four and a half doughnuts worth—

of sugar. Odwalla Superfood juice has even more—just 12 ounces of the fruit-based smoothie contains 50 grams of sugar. That is the equivalent of a shocking five Krispy Kremes. Even a bottle of Vitamin Water, despite its healthy-sounding name, contains 33 grams of sugar per 20 ounce bottle, or 3.3 Krispy Kremes. Other beverages on the list include 8oz of Tropicana orange juice, which clocks in at over twice the sugar of a Krispy Kreme with 22 grams. And a grande latte from Starbucks contains 17 grams of sugar, the same as 1.7 Krispy Kremes. Also seemingly healthy but still full of sugar are fruity yogurts like Yoplait Original, which contains 27 grams per 6 ounces. That equates to 2.7 of the popular doughnuts. The Credit Suisse study focused on sweeteners, which doctors recommend should always be used in moderation, and not at other nutritional benefits. A doughnut, of course, lacks some of the vitamins and minerals present in fruit juices. The study also notes: ‘While medical research is yet to prove conclusively that sugar is the leading cause of obesity, diabetes type II and metabolic syndrome, the balance of recent medical research studies are coalescing around this conclusion.’

Tomato & aubergine curry 2 aubergines, cut into chunks 3 tablespoons sunflower oil 1 medium onion, chopped ~ 2 tablespoons mild curry paste 500g ripe tomatoes, quartered ~ 160g red lentils 225ml hot vegetable stock ~ 125g baby spinach leaves Handful of fresh coriander, chopped Greek yogurt, to serve

method

Layer the aubergine in a colander, sprinkling with salt as you go. Put a plate on top and weigh down with tins. Leave for 30 minutes – doing this means the aubergine will absorb less oil during frying. Rinse the aubergine briefly and pat dry with kitchen towel. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large pan and fry the aubergine over a medium-low heat until golden. Set aside with a slotted spoon. Add the remaining oil and fry the onion for 10 minutes until softened and golden. Add the curry paste and fry for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, lentils, stock and aubergine, and bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, then remove the lid and continue cooking for 10-15 minutes until the lentils are tender. Stir in the spinach and chopped coriander to wilt, and serve the curry with cooling yogurt.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

3rd time lucky Having been given a date for Pete’s next appointment with Traumotología at Huercal-Overa Hospital, we had both been slightly mystified when another appointment came through the post for an appointment at the same place with the same consultant, but a week or so later. Hard on its heels came a third appointment, identical in every way except for the date, which was again a couple of weeks later. I baulked at the obvious course of action – ring up and ask. I am not happy speaking Spanish on the phone; I go all of a doo-dah, especially if the circumstances require me to appear relatively intelligent. So on the day of the first appointment we packed all three appointments letters into Pete’s folder and sallied confidently forth. Entering Consultas Externas we readied ourselves for the melee that is the waiting room, squared our shoulders and walked in – to an empty room. Pete sat down on one of the dozens of spare seats and surveyed the firmly closed Consulting Room doors. ‘It’s closed!’ He said, and I felt

he was probably right. ‘Knock on one of the doors, see if anyone is in.’ He encouraged. What?! Knock on a door that is clearly labelled in Spanish Don’t Knock On The Door – I’m as brave as the next person, but a suicidal idiot I am not! I’ve seen what happens to Spanish people who knock on doors which are not to be knocked on, and I tremble to think what fate would befall an English person committing the same transgression! ‘It’s closed!’ he reiterated. ‘Knock on a door!’ After he had admonished this reckless course of action four times I considered smacking him one, but you can’t hit a man with glasses, so instead I dithered indecisevely mid-room. My dilemma was solved by the appearance of a Nursie in a white coat. I surrounded her quickly and pressed that day’s appointment paper into her hand. ‘It’s closed,’ she explained, ‘Go to Cita Previa and make another appointment.’ Not wishing to appear a complete nincompoop, I presented the lady behind the Cita Previa desk with all three appointments and an expression that had Que? written all over it. Calmly she tore up the first two appointments and handed the third one back to me. ‘This one,’ she smiled. ‘Come back in October.’ If only they had put in an explanatory note with the appointment – on the other hand, if I hadn’t been too chicken to phone up….. Ah well! Third time lucky!

hasta l a vista, baby!

I have said it before and I will say it again: friendship is the most cherished and important possession we can have. Most of us have many acquaintances that we term as friends. People whose company we enjoy for an evening out; will invite round for a meal, and perhaps spend a weekend away with occasionally. And of course these are true friends by definition – what else would they be? But it seems to me that there is a word missing in the English language that describes those companions or associates that are much more than just acquaintances but fall short of being in the league of life-long bosom buddies. Come to think of it, it is not the terms ‘friend’ or ‘acquaintance’ that are wanting, but a suitable word to describe those treasured individuals who are always prepared to give help and support, and travel long distances to be with you in time of serious need - those persons

By Colin Bird :

badbirdnow@gmail.com

who are in the friendship super league, and are as precious as family. It is indeed a truism that: ‘Friends are the family you choose for yourself.’ Although I would say that perhaps the word ‘choose’ is a misnomer, because there is an element existent in such relationships that defies description. Perhaps the word ‘chemistry’ comes as close as anything to characterizing it. Because these bonds are special and rare, the majority of us can count the number of these 24 carat chums on the fingers of one hand . . . that’s disregarding spouses and partners who should in any case be our very best pals. One of the saddest days of my life was when I had to say goodbye to several of these special people all at one time. I was leaving my island home to explore another strange land and I realised how much my life had changed and been enriched by their presence over the previous two years. One of their number being my constant companion in crime throughout that time, and with whom I had shared more laughter than in the whole of the rest of my life prior to meeting him. He and the others were, and remain – some thirty eight years later – my dearest and closest friends. You see! I am using the word ‘friend’ to describe them, but in fact there is no single word in the English language that comes close to conveying this extra special bond and relationship. We merely make do with the two word description of ‘best friend’ on such occasions. We have all pledged to endeavour to

gather every two years which can be a logistical nightmare. Apart from the inconvenience of work for them – a word that I have been fortunate enough to have erased from my vocabulary – there is the problem of geography. They live on both sides of the United States and equally, both East and West coasts of Canada. Add Dubai into the mix and the difficulties of arranging reunions become apparent. But still, we have managed it on two occasions, and in 2014 it will be our turn to host the get-together here in Spain, and I know that once again, we will slip comfortably back into each other’s company effortlessly and smoothly as if the intervening years never happened. Something for us to look forward to and the neighbours to start thinking about putting as much distance as possible between them and Villamartin come June. But none of this denigrates or trivialises the affection for those other friends that we have day to day contact with and whose company we enjoy greatly on an on-going basis. In fact life would be unthinkable without their presence. Most are still part of our lives, but some have returned to the Mother country over the years and it is always a great sadness to know that perhaps we will not enjoy their company or even see them again. Others come and go – spending time in

alqueria Los Pasatiempos de Alqueria John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

viewpoint

Alquerian pastimes are deep-rooted in the traditions of the sierra. The most obvious is annoying those from the opposing barrio and the most popular is the one in which Manuela excels. Of those that can be discussed in polite company perhaps football naturally takes the lead. Football in Alqueria was given a boost in 2013 when Alqueria Unido attended the UEFA Cup. They didn’t last long. Just long enough for the spelling mistake to be spotted. They had to make their own way back from Amsterdam, hitchhiking and committing petty street crime to pay for food and shelter during their trek home. The gentry of Alqueria have long practiced the sport of shooting. Using a selection of firearms ranging from shotguns to shoulder launched antitank missiles they have systematically decimated the wild-life of the area. Not as popular as it once was due to the decline in the number of devotees. The shooting party usually met at the Bar La Casa Devante where alarming quantities of Remitroot Rum were consumed. They would then stumble and stagger into the campo and start blasting at anything that moved. This had an adverse effect on the population of Alqueria in general and shooting enthusiasts in particular. There was a bid to ban the sport but as it kept the numbers of chinless wonders down it was deemed good for the environment. Newt hunting is on the increase in the Village with the Alquerian Newt

Hound bred specifically for the purpose. The Alquerian Newt is a genetically modified subspecies of the Common European Newt. Being ten times larger and with fearsome teeth that can tear through corrugated iron the creature is a match for any hunter. The Alquerian Newt Hound was bred from the Andalucían Hound by Pedro El Estevado. When the dog finds a newt it stands on three legs with its near-side front paw pointed at the amphibian, tail erect while barking and howling. The Newt is then secured and sold in the backstreets of Cairo where its genitals fetch a high price as an effective cure for Camel Drivers Crutch. Imported pastimes have never done well in Alqueria, the attempted introduction of Morris Dancing is a prime example. When the Kessingland Morris Men and Haddock Gutters from Lowestoft arrived in Alqueria their tiny minds believed Morris Dancing would replace the passionate, exhausting flamenco. They gave one half of one display. Most Alquerians simply headed for the nearest bar, those that stayed soon lost the will to live. Only Loco Paco enjoyed the spectacle, he performs the same gyrations when the moon is full and bright. Traditional pastimes have always held sway in Alqueria. There is none more enjoyable and traditional than that favoured by Manuela.

Spain and the UK equally – but again, it is a wrench to watch them leave albeit for only a matter of months. And so it is hard to come to terms with the fact that I am about to lose another friend. Perhaps not lose in the strictest sense, but whose presence in my weekly life will soon be absent. It’s a somewhat unique friendship because

we have never actually met. This may sound bizarre, but we have had weekly electronic exchanges with much humour and a good deal of banter for the best part of five years now – something I have come to look forward to. So good luck and further success in your new life dear Claire, and above all, much happiness. You have been an inspirational editor and I will miss you greatly.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

braben’s blog...

I spent a lot of time as a child in theatres with my dad, who was a comedy writer. At that time he wrote for Ken Dodd and I would often be taken to the shows. My dad died recently and I got to thinking about all the weird and wonderful acts we saw; harmonica players who were also acrobats, a dancing duck, which was placed on a hot plate to make it “dance”-that’d be about as welcome today as repeats of Rising Damp! But one of the highlights was always the sword swallower. What I want to know is, how does anybody decide to become one? Is there a burning desire deep down, wherever desires burn, to stand in front of an audience and thrust incredibly sharp and not insignificantly lethal weapons down your throat, or is it just plain stupidity? No don’t send in the answer, I think we are in agreement there. But swallowing a sword isn’t something you do accidentally, like spilling scalding water down your leg or taking the wrong turning in your car, no, you can’t absent mindedly manoeuvre a sword down your throat then wonder how it got there-unless you had drunk substantial amounts of falling down water! Then, once you make the momentous decision to follow the path of shoving finely honed steel down your throat, where do you train? I looked at University courses and although there are all manner of things you can do there, sword swallowing isn’t one of them. Of course, even when-if-you have found an expert to train you, how do you go about finding work, I bet Job Centres aren’t overflowing with openings. But that shouldn’t put you off, because I think we need sword swallowers, fire eaters and the like. Look, be honest, what would you rather do, watch someone making a meal out of a burning stick, or the latest fiscal speech by some dodgy politician-is there any other kind? Exactly! Graham is married to Helen and has I think they deserve our admiration, you know a daughter, Alice. like explorers, octopus wrestlers and anyone who He lives part of the watches “The Bold and the Beautiful” voluntarily. year near Albox, Eccentric they may be, but everyone should, but works in Qatar, teaching. Those that love all things quiz know that quiz setters are given a book filled with fiendish and trick questions when they graduate from quiz setting school. Quiz setters guard these mythical tomes with their lives much like the Magic Circle does with their magic spells. One question that often stumps the unsuspecting is – what is the nearest star to Earth? Another more relevant question to this article which also comes from the secret book is - what is the largest volcano known to man? The answer may be more earthbound now as scientists mapping the ocean floor found the remains of a Super Volcano 1000 miles off the coast of Japan. It covers an area of 120,000 square miles which considering the British Isles covers 93,000 miles means it’s rather large. Luckily it’s been extinct for over a hundred and forty million years. Currently the world’s largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii, yet this whippersnapper covers a mere 2000 square miles. Olympus Mons on Mars spreads over 113,000 miles soaring nearly 14 miles high and reaches a height three times that of Everest. Even at that height Olympus Mons only makes it as the

second highest peak in the solar system as up in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter is Vesta which is what’s known as a Proto Planet. Vesta has a surface area the size of Pakistan with an impact crater called Rheasilvia on it. The peak in the middle of the crater rises up well over14 miles, so standing on tip toes it just pips Olympus Mons to the tallest student in class prize. Even with the highest mountain in the solar system sticking out like an angry spot on its bottom; Vesta is only the second largest lump of rock in the Asteroid Belt that’s not quite a planet, Ceres makes it as the largest. Ceres is about 500 miles across with a surface area the size of India, which sounds large until compared to our own Moon which is 25 times larger. Ceres was discovered in 1801with many thinking it was the missing link. For years astronomers thought there should be another planet in between Mars and Jupiter. Unfortunately Ceres does not fit the very strict criteria to be classed as a planet so it is just a plain old dwarf planet. This is the same class Pluto was demoted to in 2006 giving the solar system just 8 planets instead of the 9 we

were all taught at school. Poor Pluto was also upstaged a year earlier in 2005 when Eris was discovered and named as the largest of all dwarf planets. Eris was originally going to be called Xena after the warrior princess from telly as more female names are needed in space. It starts with X as in Planet-X the mythical planet that is supposed to exist. Mars does win a prize for the largest impact crater in the solar system called Utopia Planitia measuring 2100 miles across. Trekkies will recognise the craters name as in Star Trek lore this is the site of the Federation ship yards both on the planet Mars and wait for it - in aero synchronous orbit above it; the USS Enterprise-D was built there. Captain Jean Luc Picard as played by the ever young Patrick Stewart was the commanding officer for most of that starships life. I apologize in advance to any Trekkie reading if my Star Trek history is not quite exact on this but there’s no need to write in with any corrections.

British TV – Is all the hassle worth it? Over the week I’ve have a few grumblings that my article last week was a little technical for some of you good readers and for that I apologise! The aim is always to clarify some, usually, technical article in a way that allows most people can understand. We all know that, with the change of satellites, we are likely to lose British TV. While reading up on the subject of the imminent loss of coverage, I found a “footprint” map of the proposed reception area. Think of a real footprint in the sand, and the idea of any other “footprint” will be obvious. This footprint, which currently covers most of the south of Spain will, in future, barely touch the border with France! British Gibraltar will also lose there english TV. We have already considered the option of internet TV and the benefits and problems associated with it. So, today I want to look at some of the devices that you can buy (and ridiculous prices that some want to charge!). The list of devices that seem to be commonly available are Google Chromecast; Roku; Apple TV; the WII, X-Box and Playstation games consoles; Tivo (I can almost hear Dr Who!). It is all over the net (bloody good marketing) that Google, who are the paragon of virtue and discretion (fingers firmly crossed), have released a memory chip sized device called ‘Chromecast’ that will allow you to get you much needed TV. They are, unfortunately, making it difficult for programmers to

write additional programs to enhance the new chip. So much for their ‘Open Source’ (transparent and obvious) policies! At $35 it is really cheap and by first reports, even from jaded techno-jouralists, is that it is good! Roku, were the first to use internet streaming for TV and online multimedia, and are still the leaders. Although their prices start a little higher and can get very expensive, they still have all the advantages that google offer and a track record of success, stablility and reliability. Apple TV, although up to google, were the new boys, their product does seem a little limited and doesn’t allow for BBC etc. Games consoles are just that! TiVo is one of the most expensive of the devices out there but does boast some superb features such as, inbuilt recording, watch a channel and record another. This is a real toy, but do we need this much? There are others and I will look into them at another time. Finally a quick warning! There is malware that will get on your machine, tell you the FBI or Guardia are watching YOU and that a fine of 200€ is payable to unlock you machine. RUBBISH! No-one is watching you and the malware can be gotten rid of relatively easily! Just shut the machine off and ring a friend or better still, me! Till next time, Have an uneventful but enjoyable week. Time to start studying up on XBMC.

19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador. Desert Springs Shocker On Thursday the 19th September 32 members and guests played a three from four to count stable-ford competition at Desert Springs, beautiful weather conditions and a course in tip top condition welcomed the large group of players. The team that proved to be unbeatable on the day was that of Peter and Richard Easthope, Nick Bowden and Barry Harding, this team of free swinging hard hitting and deadly putting experts scored a Nett 100 points to easily win the day. Between them they also took the three Nearest the Pin competitions, Richard also converted his Nearest the Pin for a Two on the second hole. In second place was a team that, on paper, was favourite to win Mark Danson, Terry Caddick Alan Chippendale and John Haydon. Although playing good sound golf they just couldn’t match the winners on the day coming home with 94

points and a Two on the 17th as a bit of consolation for John. In third place, with 90 points, were Lee and Christopher Coxon, Harry Eels and The Ghost. Unfortunately the team of Roger Kaye, Dave and Zeta Denyer and The Ghost, were unable to complete the round due to a freak accident. Roger, who was completely unsighted from the following group, was hit on the forearm by a Tee Shot. He had to retire and was taken by ambulance to the Cuevas Medical Centre for xrays and soothing words from the Doctors and Nurses, luckily no breaks were found only severe bruising and a nasty looking cut which will keep him out of playing for a couple of weeks. The moral of this incident is that this funny old game of golf can be extreme if things go a bit wrong, all of us must exercise great care in ensuring the safety of other folk around the course.
