XIII International Classical Guitar Competition Julián Arcas The XIII Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Clásica Julián Arcas, (XIII International Classical Guitar Competition Julián Arcas) organised by Cajamar Caja Rural, will take place this year between the 17 and the 26 October. It will commence with an act by ‘Los Divinos’. The Director del Certamen, Juan Francisco Padilla, described the act as ‘a work that combines music, theatre and humour, and it definitely is therapeutic.’ This year’s competition has many innovations. Among them, a concert tribute to Maty Rodríguez, one of the driving forces behind the development of guitar music in Almería, and Founder of the Conservatorio de Música de Almería, where he was also a Professor. This tribute concert will be provided by David Russell, classical guitarist known worldwide for his superb musicianship and who also has a Grammy for best instrumental soloist in classical music. The cultural program also includes other prominent events such as a concert by Rubén Bettencourt, winner of the Premio Ciutat d’Elx 2012 on the 20th October, and Fabio Zanon, which will take place on the following day, the 21 October. Also Carles Trepat will play an original guitar from Antonio de

Torres, which is more than 220 years old.

Manolo Franco, great forerunner of the fusion of classical music and flamenco, will play on October 23rd, and Ivan Rijos, famous for his great ability to improvise, will play three different concerts in the Círculo Mercantil e Industrial on Thursday 24th October. The concert will end with the Dúo Tamayo-Montesinos on the 25th October, who will play in a new venue for the Certamen - the Auditorio de El Ejido. The Director Artístico del Festival, Juan Cruz Guevara, announced that places are still available. 33 entrants have already enrolled in the ‘Antonio de Torres’ division, for youngsters of 13 years of age; 35 in ‘José Tomás’ (up to 18 years) and 25 in the senior category ‘Julián Arcas’. The limit per category in 50 entrants. Alongside this competition a painting competition for children, entitled ‘I Concurso de Dibujo Infantil’. It is open to children aged 5 to 12 years who attend primary schools Almería. Entries close on October 11th, and prizes will be, of course, guitars. teleprensa.es

III Edición del Almería Western Film Festival

The Ayuntamiento de Tabernas, the Almería Western Film Festival, the Parque Temático Oasys Mini Hollywood and the film studios of Fort Bravo are the promotors and organisors of the AWFF 2013, while the Junta de Andalucía, Turismo de Andalucía and the Diputación de Almería, are sponsoring the III Edición del Almería Western Film Festival.

They are aware of the importance of the Festival for the generation of employment at all levels in Tabernas, Almería and Andalucía, where the film industry has a history stretching back more than 40 years.

The AWFF has a present and future commitment to promote the area as a venue for commercials, music videos, feature and short films, as well as an alternative and unique spot in Europe for leisure and entertainment. During

the

official

presentation of AWFF , María de las Nieves Jaén, Alcaldesa del Ayuntamiento de Tabernas, has stated that Tabernas must try to lure back the film industry. It is the driving force of the economy along with tourism.’ The Delegada Territorial de la Consejería de Fomento, Vivienda, Turismo y Comercio de la Junta de Andalucía en Almería, Dª Encarnación Caparrós Plaza, said that ‘for our province the development of tourism film and the film shoots are strategic in defining Almería as a tourist destination, and for the generation of employment.’ She added that the support of the Consejería de Turismo y Comercio de la Junta de Andalucía at the Festival has resulted in several initiatives to promote the area. According to Rafael Molina, Gerente de Fort Bravo, ‘the AWFF means that the whole area benefits, not only Tabernas. The Festival is relevant to Tabernas, Almería, Andalucia, and Spain. Our deserts are the heritage of the area and part of our identity. Everything stays the same, everything is in perfect condition and the conditions are the same as 30 or 40 years ago. To shoot a Western movie here just need a script and actors because everything else is already assembled and organised.’ José María Rodríguez, Director of Oasys - Mini Hollywood, explained that ‘our studios are still attractive and interesting to the Western genre productions. We strive to make Mini Hollywood real and accessible to young producers and directors so they can carry out their projects with low budgets.’ The organisation of the Almeria Western Film Festival, as represented by César Méndez and Danny García, has a mission to promote the Western genre to professionals and the public. The objective is to achieve the same volume of movies as in the 60s in which several shoots took place simultaneously. At a press conference a new Spanish project was announced; a comedy Western, directed by Rafael Romero Marchent with Mario Casas as one of the cast.

Alpujarra gets information points to coincide with world tourism day

This initiative has been timed to coincide with World Tourism Day.

In MARTINEZ DE LA CASA Architects we are specialists in Energy Performance Certificate since 2008.

The Information points are in the Municipalities of: Abla, Alcolea, Almócita, Alsodux, Beires, Bentarique, Berja, Canjáyar (2 have been installed here), Instinción, Ohanes, Padules, Rágol, Santa Cruz de Marchena, Terque, Laujar de Andarax, Bayárcal, Alboloduy, Huécija and Alicún. This

new

infrastructure,

which cost around €400,000, guides the tourists who come to the town from the car parks to the information point, from which they can begin their chosen route. The Presidente del ADR Alpujarra Almeriense y del Plan Turístico, Antonio Manuel Ortiz Oliva, praised the installations, adding that ‘the most interesting and important part of this infrastructure is that it will allow tourists to have clear information.’ The Gerente en Funciones

del Plan Turístico, Agustín Cabrera, commented on the provision of the new wireless device at the data points that allows tourists access from their mobile devices to all urban route information. Furthermore these places have audio guides offering a geographical and historical description, highlighting the most important heritage facts and those elements of environmental and ecotourism relevant to the area.

S PA IN ’S health service is seeing the biggest cuts ever in next year’s budget with a reduction of 35.6 per cent. Although the State budget for 2014 shows increases in most areas, once Social S e c u r i t y contributions, taxes and other dues paid by the workforce in the public and private sector, and taxes paid by the electricity sector, the actual spending by the State next year has fallen by 4.7 per cent. The health service reduction of 35.6 per cent is the highest cut of all, whilst the ministry of industry has seen the highest increase in funding, at 31.6 per cent. It will get just 1.9 billion euros, of which once taxpayers’ contributions are deducted, reduces to just under 378 million. Last year’s budget included an additional billion euros

The United Nations has urged Spain to scrap an amnesty law that pardons crimes committed during the dictatorship of Gen Francisco Franco, who died in 1975. Hundreds of thousands of

people disappeared during the Spanish civil war and the 36 years of nationalist rule that followed. A team of UN experts has urged the Spanish government to help the many relatives of missing Franco-

era victims, who want justice and information about the victims’ fate. Dozens of those relatives demonstrated in Madrid on 25 September 2013 to draw attention to the issue.

POSSIBLE hunger strike FOR ALCALDE OF FINES Alcalde of Fines, Rodrigo Sánchez will shut himself into the premises of the Escuela del Mármol de Andalucía, and will go on a hunger strike if there is no formal commitment of payment by the Junta de Andalucía to the Consorcio Escuela del Mármol de Andalucía by 18th October. He made this bold promise at a plenary session. He said ‘I will do this to support its workers (of the Consorcio Escuela del Mármol) and require the Junta to pay the debt owed to these 22 people and the Centre.’ The pleno approved a motion urging ‘the Consejo de Gobierno de la Junta de Andalucía to urgently and immediately pay the Consorcio workers, the suppliers, and the finance and social security debts to ensure the functioning of the school and the job security of its workers.’ The Consorcio Escuela del Mármol de Andalucía, a dependent of the Consejería

de Educación de la Junta de Andalucía, has accumulated debts dating back to 2011, and probably on total has outstanding commitment to pay one and a half million in outstanding debt.

The Alcalde said ‘So far I have wanted to stay in the background so as not to harm the school. There are families with children who have worked for 10 months without pay, and this situation is unsustainable. As Vice President of the School and as Mayor of Fines is my responsibility is to be at their side and this is the only alternative; this is the last resort left to me.’

One of the boats, with 30 Maghrebi (North African) immigrants, all older men, was seen 18 miles east of the Isla de Alborán. The Salvamento Marítimo took the occupants to the fishing port of Almería.

The Cruz Roja has taken charge of one hundred of immigrants who have arrived in less than twelve hours on the coast of Almería. They have provided food, drink, blankets and health care to the immigrants, all of whom have been handed over to the Cuerpo Nacional de Policía for repatriation.

Last week 53 immigrants were taken to the capital’s port.

Whether you are thinking of adding a room divider, switching out dining room furniture sets that still bring the 1970s back to mind or you just want to shake things up a little, there are five easy ways to update your dining room without breaking the bank. Before Decorating Dining Room Walls and Furniture, Lose the Clutter Do papers, magazines and toys seem to congregate in your dining area? Is the dining room an extension storage area for your home office? Update your dining room by getting rid of all the clutter first. You may be surprised to find that the dining room is actually in better shape than you thought possible. Let the Dining Room Make a Statement Do you remember the red wall craze, when everyone seemed to paint one wall in their homes red? The dining room can make a similar statement but without the in-yourface colour. Look around and get a feel for your preferred colours that seem to make the dining room work; pick a complementary shade and paint one wall in a solid dark. You might opt for a grey or brown. Paint the other walls in a neutral colour that sets the stage for the statement wall.

Do you feel like your home could do with some modernisation? then call into

update your dining room

Homes & Beyond

in Garrucha

Modern designs for your kitchen, lounge, bedroom & terrace.

Update Window Treatments Decorating dining room windows is easy: find a fabric that coordinates with another fabric already in the room. This is not to say that your window treatments need to be identical to your chair coverings; however, if the dominant colour of your chairs is burgundy, you should find window treatments that incorporate the same shade of burgundy somewhere in the pattern. Stay away from blinds; they give the window an institutional feel rather than a homey atmosphere. Use Lights as a Room Divider or Unifier Do you have high ceilings? Add a chandelier, and it will serve instantly as a room unifier and draw attention to the dining room table that sits underneath. Avoid a bulky light fixture if you have average height ceilings or a small room. Instead, use wall mounted scones that may be controlled by two or more dimmers. These lights may become a room divider; turn on those on one side of the room but turn down those on the other side.

HAPPY TAPAS AT LA BODIGUINA Friday 27th September saw a large group from the Roquetas De Mar ‘Friday Tapas Group’ (TFG) turn up at La Bodeguina in the Urbanisation, where they were served with some delicious tapas, fine ales and wines. The party included a

Friday Golf Society

It was a hot sticky day this week. Hotter than normal for the end of September. We had 37 players including two guests taking part in a Best 2 stableford competition with two hidden holes. With Terry’s new rules the two hidden holes only count in the event of a tie. They came into play on this occasion but both teams had the same score on the hidden holes. So the tie was decided on lower handicap. The winners were Brian D, Rudolph, Cynthia and Doris (our imaginary player) with a score of 91 points. It is not surprising that they won as two of the three players played better than their handicap. Last place and chocolates went to Alan Sh, Elaine, John N and Doris’s twin sister Doris with a score of 71 points. It

is not surprising that they came last as their best player was Doris scoring 30 points. Nearest the pin was won by Hans O with a distance of 2.39m. Mr President was back in town after the long weekend in La Manga last week so he took charge of the prize giving ceremony. We had 5 players who beat their handicap. Hans O and Cynthia scored 38 points each. Rudolph, Dan G (a new member) and John Wo all scored 37 points. Dan and Hans O lost a shot on the slope of the Master Course. Cynthia lost 2 shots on the slope.

Standing up straight could help improve your job prospects. ‘People who slump look like they’re ashamed to take up space,’ says presentation and posture coach Michele Paradise, who works with professional models to help improve their posture. ‘However, if you stand tall and straight and look confident, people will respond positively, making you feel better about yourself and in turn increase the likelihood that you will get a positive response.’ Her advice is backed up by research: a US study found that powerful posture makes people think and act more powerfully. So even if you’re not the boss, stand like you are and you’ll command respect.

Your concentration

If you’re finding it difficult to focus, your posture could be to blame. That’s because although it only accounts for two per cent of your bodyweight, your brain uses 20 per cent of your oxygen to do its job properly. Since poor posture can make it difficult to breathe deeply, it restricts your oxygen intake and interferes with your ability to think. So make sure your brain gets what it needs by keeping your back straight, which lifts your heart, lungs and diaphragm, improving your breathing and

boosting your oxygen levels. Your happiness Research has found that maintaining an unnatural position (ie, slumping) actually uses 60 to 70 per cent more energy than keeping your body in proper alignment. ‘All this extra effort makes you tired and increases the likelihood of depression and illness,’ explains Ian Horseman, a chiropractor and postural specialist. This may be due to the link between the body’s position and what consultant psychologist Ingrid Collins terms our ‘psychological posture’. She says: ‘If we

arrange ourselves in a positive manner, with our shoulders back, chest open and spine straight, our brains send out endorphins that circulate in the blood, triggering happy feelings.’ And standing tall won’t just put a smile on your face. Researchers have found that adopting a ‘power posture’ – body and limbs stretched out – decreases the stress hormone cortisol, helping you feel calmer.

Your health

Poor posture is an obvious cause of lower back problems and shoulder and neck pain but it might also be at the root of sluggish digestion and severe headaches. According to a study published in the journal Headache, people whose posture made their heads jut forward had more frequent, longer and severe headaches than people with a correct posture. This finding doesn’t surprise Charles Hunt of the British School of Osteopathy, who says that, ‘because your body’s usually fighting on lots of different fronts, work, stress, environment, if it’s working harder to maintain a poor posture, you could start to feel symptoms.’

Your looks

‘The most ageing thing in a person is bad posture,’ says Michele Paradise. ‘It projects a wordless message about a person’s age and health.’ There’s proof, too. When researchers at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, US, asked people to rate the appearance of two women in a series of pictures, in the pictures of them standing up straight, they were consistently judged to be younger and more attractive than in those of them slumping. Turn back the clock by following our guide to better posture.

confident. By lengthening your back and neck, you automatically draw your stomach muscles in, creating a longer, leaner body line. The result? You can look 5lb thinner, according to Deborah Mullen, a strength and conditioning specialist. In the same Louisville study, when subjects looked only at the women’s bodies, researchers found that the woman who weighed 20lb more than the others was perceived as thinner and more attractive simply because she was standing up straighter than the lighter woman.

How to… improve

13

vivadent centro dental

your posture

Now you know why you should, here’s how to do it...

Sit well ‘Be mindful about how you sit when you eat, drive and work at a computer,’ says Alexander Technique teacher Angela East (www.stat.org.uk). ‘If you’re guilty of contorting your body to get nearer your plate, sit up straight and hinge from the hips instead of curving your spine and use your fork to bring food to your mouth.’ In the car, try not to grip the steering wheel; instead, Angela recommends holding it lightly with your elbows by your side and remembering to rest your arms in your lap when you stop at traffic lights to help your muscles relax. ‘In the office, seats should be parallel to the ground at knee height, your feet flat on the floor and your arms dropping downwards,’ she says. ‘Whatever you’re doing, you need to be sat directly on your sitting bones, which are the knobbly bits you feel if you sit on the palms of your hands.’

Roll your shoulders ‘Stand with your feet slightly apart and rotate your shoulders backwards three to four times by bringing them up to your ears then back and down and finally around to the front while bending your elbows to relax your muscles and release any tension,’ says Michele. On the final rotation, take a broom handle or stick and slide it through your elbows behind your back, letting it sit in the crook of your elbows for a few minutes. ‘This will instantly correct your posture, engage your core muscles and take pressure off your lower back’, she explains. Practise this daily for 15 to 30 minutes, after checking with your GP, to create a new muscle memory and a better default posture.

Look forward ‘Most of us spend too much time looking down and, if your eyes are focused on the ground, your head tends to tilt forward, your chest collapses and your spine will begin bending,’ warns Lyn Breakwell, Bodywork therapist, (www.osteopathicpractice.com). She suggests keeping your gaze level and straight in front of you, lifting your chest from your breastbone and checking that your head is balanced on the top of your neck to lengthen your body and boost your energy.’

Pretend you’re a puppet Instead of trying to stand bolt upright like a grenadier guard, Charles recommends thinking of yourself as a Thunderbirds puppet. ‘Lift up through your head and allow everything else to hang off it.’ But aim for smooth rather than stiff, jerky movements. ‘Good posture is about making your body work as well as it can while using the least amount of energy,’ he explains.

DENTAL IMPLANTS by Dr. Juan Cremades Directing Surgeon at Centro Dental Vivadent in VERA 1) What are implants? Artificial biocompatible “roots” which are introduced into the jawbone to replace lost teeth. Many dental professionals refer to them as the “third set”, following milk teeth and adult teeth. 2) When are implants considered? The technique can apply to all patients who’ve lost one or more teeth and are looking for a permanently fitted solution. Implants can be used in both the upper and lower jaw, and even for people who’ve lost all their teeth. 3) Is it the only way to have permanently fitted teeth? In many cases, yes. There are other situations where the specialist must evaluate the condition of the remaining original teeth, their distribution, their periodontal status, the patient’s bite and parafunctional status, as well as the patient’s eating habits and the intermaxial spaces. 4) Who can advise me? In theory, any dental professional is prepared to give different alternatives to the patient’s problems, but the best advice is from a specialist. The specialist works as part of a team to rehabilitate mouths. It’s not just a question of implant surgery. There’s also the decision as to what kind of prosthetics is most apt for the patient, the status of one’s dental hygiene, the provisional prosthetics to be used between visits

(fixed versus removable), the esthetics dilemma during the process, how one’s speech is affected, the possible need for preliminary periodontal work (no mouth should undergo surgery without a preliminary periodontal evaluation), and the functional and esthetic expectations of the patient. 5) What does the treatment entail? FIRST and foremost, we must listen to the patient and assess whether their idea is technically plausible. The diagnosis assessment involves little material and offers initial solutions inexpensively. After the first diagnosis, if the patient is considering implants as a viable option, the next step for the specialist is a planned, individualised study and estimate. Upon presentation of the study and approval of the patient, there may be a series of additional procedures required (blood tests, specific x-rays, etc) in order to consolidate the initial proposed treatment and reduce risks. 6) Is the treatment painful? Is it expensive? In 90% of the cases, although tiring, there is no pain involved. The implant patients require many visits to the professional and the time span can be anywhere from 4 to 12 months, depending on the difficulty. For the 10% of the patients who have pain, there are easy remedies if the professional is notified in time. It is very important to follow ALL of the professional’s recommendations; the patient will hence avoid complications.

Up to 18 per cent of owners never take their pets to the vet – even for inoculation jabs beyond the reach of impoverished pet-owners.

to infections and illness, and that they tended to become fat and lifeless afterwards.

Overall, vets in Spain charge much lower fees for treating animals than in the UK – where a consultation alone can cost 60 pounds (about 72 euros) and booster jabs as much as 150 pounds (around 180 euros).

This is not the case, since non-neutered cats are more likely to get into fights with other animals in the street, thus being at greater risk of infection, as well as causing a proliferation of litters of street cats condemned to a life of hunting for food in bins and an early death through lack of injections and veterinary care.

Spanish vets also recommend booster injections are given every two to three years, and say that the most crucial jabs are the initial ones when the animal is still a baby. Often, they do not charge for a mere consultation if no medication is given, or for routine matters such as ear-mites, worming or antibiotics, only charge for the drugs. A RECENT survey has revealed that nearly one in five petowners never takes their animal to the vet – not even for initial injections and regular boosters. According to the veterinary pharmaceutical company CEVA, a total of 18 per cent do not take their cats, dogs or other animals to the vet when they are ill nor have them injected against fatal feline and canine diseases – partly due to the economic crisis which means owners can no longer afford vet bills. And with higher-rate IVA applied to veterinary medication, many vets have been forced to increase their prices, often

Discounts are frequently given where someone brings a feral cat from the street in for treatment, spaying or neutering. Animals not vaccinated from a few months old are at serious risk of contracting fatal diseases which can spread to other animals – feline leukaemia and feline AIDS are incurable and can be transmitted whilst fighting with other cats. CEVA found there were also urban myths about sterilising animals. Many cat-owners believed that having a tom cat neutered meant he was susceptible

Spaying and neutering cats and dogs does not affect their character or their body weight, and is a routine operation which is relatively cheap – around 40 or 50 euros for tom cats or 80 to 90 euros for queen cats, or a little more for dogs – which could prevent health problems in later life and stop habits such as spraying in the house, which cannot be cured once started. Vets also advise against manicuring cats’ claws, and strongly recommend that the common practice in Spain of de-clawing cats be abolished – a cat’s claws are his or her defence, necessary for scratching itches, and also for climbing – a cat can misjudge its aim when attempting to climb and suffer a fall, causing itself an injury. image:blog.ottawahumane.ca

pause for thought

Q. My cousin has deceased in Spain and has left me as his only beneficiary of his worldwide estate by a will which he signed in Spain. He had a house in Spain worth approx 200000 euro and a bank account in Jersey worth 60000 pounds sterling (approx. 70000 euro). He was a Spanish resident. I am domiciled in the UK. My solicitor in Spain says that I have to pay inheritance tax in Spain on the house in Spain and on the bank account in Jersey, while my accountant in the UK is telling me that he thinks this is incorrect and I should consult another solicitor in Spain. A You need to pay inheritance tax in Spain on the inheritance of the house, but not on the account you have inherited in Jersey. You will need to consult your accountant regarding possible inheritance tax obligations in the UK but in Spain, it is clear that you do not pay inheritance tax on the account in Jersey. The law in Spain is simple: If the heir is a Spanish resident he/she pays inheritance tax on anything he/she receives anywhere in the world, (unless bilateral agreements with the country where the assets are situated say otherwise which is not the case with the UK.). If the heir is non-resident of Spain he/she only pays inheritance tax in Spain on the assets he receives that are situated in Spain at the time of death.

We all like to feel appreciated, don’t we? Whether it be just the simple wave from a fellow motorist when we allow them to come in front of us, or the letter of thanks from a returned visitor after enjoying our hospitality, a “thank you” can really make a difference to the way we feel and our perception of others. I know we once had guests, who just treated us like a hotel, continually requesting service, never offering help and always ready to complain, who left without any word of thanks, and who, we presume, will fortunately never want to come again. It’s a simple courtesy, we hope we’ve taught our children, to show real appreciation and gratitude whenever someone does us a kindness, and never to take others for granted. But just how much we take God for granted and how rarely do we take time to acknowledge His goodness. How quick we are to protest when storms and floods destroy our crops and infrastructure as happened last year. How quickly we complain when sickness or tragedy strikes us or those we love. And how often do we pause in our busy lives to “count our blessings”; thanking God for the health and happiness that over the years we have come to presume is our right. How often, as we prepare to enjoy a good meal with friends, do we thank, not just the cook, but God for His provision of food, health and friendship, using the words along the lines of: “For food to eat and those who prepare it; for health to enjoy it and friends to share it, we give you thanks O Lord.” So now, at this time of year, as many of us join together to celebrate harvest, let’s take time for true gratitude for all we have; and remembering those who can’t afford such celebrations, make some effort to share our abundance with them, either through giving to a Church Harvest-Thanksgiving or by donating to one of the official foodbanks in this area. THE SPAINIAC

sa Dragonera Candice Parsons

There were high spirits along the Costas as worldwide enthusiasm for German atmosphere and Bavarian beer gripped the imagination. De Bassus Restaurant at La Zenia on the Costa Blanca was the scene of much oompah. Restaurant’s staff and partygoers celebrated the 200 year old Oktober Bier Fest, the world’s largest fair staged in Munich. Oktoberfest lasts 17 days and an estimated 6 million enjoy the occasion. The beer is stronger than the average tipple. Those who can’t ‘take their beer’ are known as beir leichen or beer corpses. The Costa communities have shown more restraint whilst celebrating this now worldwide event.

Sa Dragonera, or ‘Dragon Island’, is an uninhabited island located just off the south west coast of Mallorca. Gaining the name from its unique shape, said to resemble a slumbering dragon, the island stretches out around 3, 200 metres long and 500 metres wide. Sa Dragonera was bought by the Consell of Mallorca in 1987, and eight years later the Balearic government declared the island a natural park, along with the islands of Pantaleu and Sa Mitjana. Sa Dragonera is part of the muncipality of Andratx, and can be accessed by ferry from either Port d’Andratx or Sant Elm. From these departure points, visitors will cross a water channel of around 800 meters wide to reach the island. Ferries depart several times a day and generally cost around ten euros for the journey. The island is crawling with all kinds of species - or smaller dragons - including several kinds of wall lizards. These are a infact a protected species only found within Sa Dragonera, and visitors are requested not to feed them. A number of sea birds can also be found on the island, together with a rich variety of flora and fauna that spreads across its rocky slopes. Sa Dragonera was said to have once been the base for Mallorca’s most favourite pirate ‘Red Beard’, and various legends of pirates and smugglers link back to the island. Three automatic lighthouses stand on the island as historical evidence of previous settlements - Far Vell at the highest peak; Far de Tramuntana at the north end; and Far de Llebeig at the south end. These lighthouses are the navigation points that guide all four of the walking excusions available for visitors that come to the island. Sa Dragonera continues to be a favourite destination of conserved natural beauty for hikers, walkers, photographers, and nature lovers. Jersey To End Banking Secrecy For EU Residents

By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks Jersey is to drop the withholding tax option under the EU Savings Tax Directive. It will be mandatory for financial institutions to automatically exchange information on their clients’ bank accounts, effectively bringing the era of banking secrecy to an end in the offshore centre. This will bring Jersey in line with Guernsey and the Isle of Man, who have already abolished the withholding tax (or “retention tax”) option. It is proposed that the official start date will be 1st January 2015, though financial institutions will be allowed to start earlier

if they wish to harmonise operations with those in Guernsey and Isle of Man. If you live in Spain and have a savings account in Jersey, your bank will pass details about your bank account to the Spanish tax authorities. This will be done automatically each year, regardless of whether the Spanish authorities have requested information. The information exchanged under the Savings Tax Directive is: • Your name, address and residency details • Details of the source of the funds • The amount of savings held • The period to which it relates. Currently, this applies to savings income.

Over the coming years the Directive will be extended to include life insurance products, pensions, employment income, directors’ fees, immoveable property, dividends, capital gains and royalties.

new overseas asset reporting obligation.

This will be another tool for the Spanish tax authorities to use in their fight against offshore tax evasion. It will help them collect unpaid taxes and ensure that foreign bank accounts are fully taxed in future. They will most likely compare the information received with that provided by you on your tax return, and also on Form 720.

tourist figures up for 2013

Eloísa Cabrera, Teniente Alcalde of Roquetas de Mar, and Ángel Mollinedo, Concejal de Turismo, have presented a report on the tourist figures for 2013. During the month of July the occupancy rate hovered around 94%, while in the month of August, occupation was 100%. Due to the maintenance of contacts established by the Concejalía de Turismo with the empresarios of this sector the Concejal de Turismo, Ángel Mollinedo said that this season has yielded similar figures to those of before the crisis, in 2005-

2006. He stressed that for Roquetas these figures are essential, as, along with agriculture, these are the two main sources of income and local employment. Between June 15 and September 15 The Oficinas Municipales de Turismo received more than 30,000 visits, double last year’s figures. These numbers are for the three most important visitor attractions: The towns of Roquetas and Aguadulce, and a new and most important site, the Castillo de Santa Ana. On the beaches, the peak of the summer season was in August when up to 70,000 people a day visited the litoral roquetero (Roquetas coast). Overall, the beaches were host to 200,000 visitors in August. He emphasized that collaboration with travel agents, tour operators and airlines has led to a significant increase in international tourism, with between 20 and 22 tourist flights per week, and more British visitors than for several years as well as greater numbers from Nordic countries and Eastern Europe. Domestic tourism has hovered around 70 percent, while tourists from abroad make up 30 percent, which is a rise of 40

percent over last year. These impressive figures have been reached despite a difference between the Junta and the Diputación Provincial. This hinged around the giving of grants of between 300,000 to 500,000 euros, 7 of which are awarded every January, and up until 2010 one of which have always been awarded to Roquetas. However, in the last three years , the Junta de Andalucía has removed all subsidies and the Ayuntamiento of Roquetas de Mar has had to bear an annual investment overall of more than one million euros. The Teniente Alcalde has pledged that ‘we will not tire of claiming at every opportunity we have for the two essential infrastructure and for the town in general, and the tourism sector in particular; the Variante and the Hospital, as the Municipality depends directly on the performance of these two works that have been paralysed by a lack of support from the Junta.’ Eloísa Cabrera announced the collaboration between administrations, the ‘IMSERSO’, under the Gobierno Central, has put its date forward to October 14, and despite any realignment of targets and participants, a commitment to Roquetas will be maintained.

INGREDIENTS

#

500ml olive oil, not extra virgin 1 small onion, finely chopped 1kg lean lamb, minced 150ml water 1.2ltr lamb stock 2 large carrots, peeled, finely diced 1/2 bunch thyme, leaves only and finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper 500g mashed potatoes, enough to cover six pies

Irene

Carrillo Bar

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4. Heat the olive oil in a large roasting tray on top of the cooker, add the finely chopped onion and sweat until tender. Add the minced lamb and fry for a few minutes to break up any big lumps. Add the water and transfer the tray to the preheated oven. Every 10 minutes, break up the mince with a whisk - all of the natural fat from the lamb will render out of the meat; this is correct. Carry on cooking until the lamb is golden brown in colour. Put the cooked lamb into a colander to drain off excess fat and grease, then return it to the original tray. Place the tray on the hob, add just enough lamb stock to cover, and bring the whole thing to the boil over a medium-low heat. Meanwhile, blanch the diced carrot in rapidly boiling salted water until soft, but not mushy, then refresh in cold water and keep to one side.

Gently simmer the lamb mince until it becomes quite binding in consistency. Add the chopped thyme and the blanched carrot. Adjust the salt and black pepper, according to taste. Transfer the mince into earthenware or china pie dishes, approximately 15 to 20cm in diameter. Press the mince down to give a smooth surface onto which the potato can be piped. Using a piping bag with a large nozzle, carefully pipe an even layer of potato over the surface of the pie. Cook the pies in an oven at 180C/gas 4 for 10 to 15 minutes, until the potato begins to turn golden brown and the pie is piping hot in the centre.

Makes 6-8 individual pies

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

Benjamin Franklin wrote in a letter to his friend JeanBaptiste Leroy that ‘In this life nothing is certain except death and taxes.’ However, Jean-Baptiste was French, and as Benjamin was good at French, what he really wrote was probably along the lines of ‘Dans cette vie, rien n’est certain, sauf la mort et les impôts.’ I have no knowledge whatsoever of French, far less 18th century French, so I have had to trust to Google for this translation! I understand what he meant, but there is more to it than that; There are no end of things which have a certainty factor - I call it the Butter Side Down Phenomenon. Here are a few of my most commonly encountered ones: A watched saucepan comes to the boil with all the speed of a sloth on holiday, but will overboil at the precise moment when I am the maximum distance away from it, and doing something else. Likewise the phone only rings when I’m nowhere near it, and am doing something else, like dealing with an overboiled saucepan. However, as soon as I have got to it, it stops. Items which I

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

had to hand only a minute ago can dematerialise, only to rematerialise somewhere else as soon as I have given up looking for them. One item in a matched set of anything fragile, such as teacups, will break, whereas any unmatched items will endure to eternity. A glass, dropped and broken in the kitchen, can send shards throughout the entire house, and under every single piece of furniture. And how is it that I can always find tinsel somewhere in the house, even in July? Anything that can break down will only do so on a Saturday afternoon, and after the guarantee has run out. The water only goes off when I have a load halfway done in the washing machine, and if there is one garment which I really want to wear, it will be in that load. My gardening clothes can remain spotless under virtually all circumstances, yet should I don a white blouse or trousers, I can guarantee something will have got spilt on them before I reach the front door. Weeds can see me coming, trowel in hand, and retract into the ground only to pop up behind me as soon as I have passed. But the most infallible Fact of Life is this: As soon as Pete has shut his eyes for an afternoon siesta, the dog will bark! What are your Facts of Life?

Spit It Out and Mind Your Language There is no individuality these days. I was watching Match of the Day on telly last Saturday night and after each goal scored in the eight matches screened, the players concerned all seemed to be working from the same script. They either slid on their backsides across the pitch with arms raised; went down on their knees skidding across the turf, or they trotted round the pitch holding their forefinger to their lips at the spectators, as if to indicate that they should be quiet. What’s that all about? In the first two scenarios, I would be bloody annoyed if I was the groundsman who had taken countless hours to bring the pitch up to match readiness and mowed it to within an inch of its life, and provided a pristine playing surface. And I wouldn’t want to have to launder their kit after ploughing up the grass with their backsides either. Goal scorers used to do a thing where they pulled the front of their shirts over their heads and dashed round the pitch with arms akimbo after each goal. But you don’t see so much of that

now, mostly I suspect since a certain player ran into a goal post, rendering himself unconscious and leaving him concussed - which earned him a suspension from his manager for being a pillock. That probably never happened, but it’s a nice thought and conjures up some gratifying images. Why can’t some player come up with another form of celebration instead of copying everyone else week on week? Something to do with having all their talent in their feet and very little between their ears in most cases I suspect. If a player decided to do something really different and – heaven forbid – congratulate team mates with a traditional hand shake after each goal; how refreshing that would be. As for kissing . . . if I was a player and somebody tried to plant one on me, I would deliver a Glasgow kiss right back a bit sharpish. And don’t get me started about the players hawking out great gobs of spit every five minutes. There are just clearing their throats of mucous someone once told me . . . a necessity when you are playing a high powered sport. Oh really. So why did the likes of Matthews, Moore, Charlton and Pelé not feel the need to indulge in the habit. Get some throat pastels or expectorant if you have a problem lads.

By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com

But once again, some goon started this nauseating practice a few years ago and now they all follow suit. Mister Rooney must end each game seriously dehydrated if the amount of slobber he expels is anything to go by. But worst of all, is that kids playing footy in the park are doing it and mirroring the actions of their overpaid heroes – because that’s what kids do. There were even some members of the English ladies team decorating the pitch with their spittle during the recent World Cup qualifier against Belarus, I noticed. Charming, and what a great example. We seem to have gone into reverse since those days when NO SPITTING signs were displayed on buses and trains and offenders fined for doing it in public. And another thing . . . what is this nonsense where it seems fashionable with many youngsters to abandon the Queens English in favour of some strange quasi Jamaican dialect? It’s great if you come from that exotic region, but other than that, a bit ridiculous if you are of Caucasian origin with red hair and born in Banbury. Dey has got dis weird way of walkin’ too, sort a like a swagga dat da Noo Yawk pimps do, know wha ah meen. An dey wave dhere hans abaht like dey is all rappers or sumfin, innit. It’s not only the youth either.

Many people from all walks of life seem to be losing the ability to communicate in a clear and interesting way. And every time I hear somebody on television about to address gatherings or being interviewed, and start each sentence with the word Ummm, I want to jump through the screen and give them a serious shaking. Even that nice young man Prince William is an offender, bless his cotton socks. So yeah, I mean, it’s about time someone like, in Government or something, started like, you know, some scheme to improve public speaking and that. It would be well good and so cool, you know what I’m saying? I mean, like really awesome. And guess what . . . Doesn’t it all make you want to . . . well no, perhaps not. If this sounds dangerously like the rantings of a grumpy old man – good. Because Ohhhh Miiiiy Gooood! - I quite like that title.

alqueria - EL MONO COLGANTE

B l y t h e Gruntmore, Alqueria’s very own Englishman resident and Geordie made one of those decisions that arrive with a flash of inspirational brilliance. The flash however wasn’t inspiration but the effect of downing a large glass of Remitroot Liquor. The idea, simply induced se nt ime nt alit y born from melancholy brought about by the after effects of downing a large glass of Remitroot liqueur. Blythe’s grand plan, to build an English pub in Alqueria. It was to be built on waste ground to the east of the Río Verde. It was to be called El Mono Colgante, The Hanging Monkey. This was in honour of a brave and gallant act performed by his forebears in the north-east of England during the Napoleonic Wars. Every detail was to be faithfully followed, even the depressing red brick was imported. One very important aspect of an English pub is the beer. Blythe, however failed to grasp the fact that beer at room temperature in England is quite different from beer at room temperature in southern Spain. Most who drank the tepid liquid thought it was a treatment for Pharyngitis. The subtleties of another British tradition were also overlooked by Gruntmore. Puddles of beer on the bar. In the cool climate of Britain people wear long sleeves, when one leans on the bar these sleeves soak up beer. Wet elbows are an integral part of the ‘Pub’ experience. In southern Spain people mostly wear short sleeves, bare elbows are not absorbent and therefore do not diminish the amount of beer on the bar counter. At the end of the first evening there was so much liquid on the bar it had developed its own tidal system. People were being treated for alcohol poisoning of the elbow, it was costing the Alquerian Heath Service thousands. Food consisted of pickled eggs, pickled onions and what Gruntmore described as ‘Mushy peas and a grunter’. This delicacy consists of Marrowfat Peas, presumably with indigestion as they are treated with bicarbonate of soda, then generally mistreated until they become a green amorphous mass. The ‘peas’ are then served with a barely warm pork pie. The sight of a Spaniard trying to decide what to do with this dish is an interesting one. Some simply opted for bouncing it off the ceiling. British pubs do not offer a table service and Gruntmore followed this tradition. Poor old Alfonso Delgado sat expectantly for four hours before being rushed off to Alqueria General Hospital by paramedics suffering from severe dehydration. Once the unpleasantness of an English pub outweighed its novelty value Gruntmore’s clientele diminished to a critical level. El Mono Colgante soon became another statistic in the list of pubs closed and up for sale. And there’s no sadder sight than a closed and bolted pub.

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

Cyber-Bullying What is it and How do we deal with it? What is Cyber-bullying? Simply put, it is a form of coercion enforced with threats and menaces. You could also call it Cyber-Terrorism. We have all heard of children who’s lives have been made unbearable due to the vicious undermining of their confidence, with the intention to control and manipulate them to the attackers own ends. Some have even taken their own lives as a result of this harassment because they couldn’t see a way out of it. This is using extreme fear (terror) to control and manipulate (terrorism)! There has always been a debate as to the best way to deal with bullies. From the bleeding hearts who would send them to Barbados to show them what a “correct attitude” can give, through the normal penal (borstal – isolationist techniques) currently favoured, to mine which involves a packing crate, a label address “Middle of the Sahara” and constantly repeating message “There will always be someone bigger and nastier than you”. Let’s make one thing absolutely and abundantly clear. Bullying is bullying whether face to face, or in the form of a beautifully hand-crafted note on the finest velum or on a screen 18 inches from your nose! And it should be dealt with promptly, and with a finality that leaves the attacker shellshocked and ready to consider their actions as wrong (standard behavioural theory states that no change can occur until the individual is motivated enough to WANT TO CHANGE)! What might surprise you is that it isn’t only children who suffer from this type of terrorism. When I first came to Spain I saw that many properties were being left by their owners and as a result being looted and vandalised. I had the simple and obvious idea to allow people of good character to look after your property, ensure that maintenance was regularly done and all bills would be paid! I put this notion on the “Arboleas Forum” and in return got a vicious and vindictive response far beyond the threat of my simple suggestion. I can only assume that most of these responses came from irate property owners who would rather risk damage to their property than lose a single cent! My response to this was surprisingly adult, (I know – Trev and Adult in the same sentence is an Oxymoron), and involved a disassembly of their arguments. I had the advantage of being a man and not a child, with a University Education and Martial combat skills that an introverted teenage “target” wouldn’t have! WE, every last one of us, MUST be aware of this problem. Why? Next time you get a warning that the FBI or GUARDIA are watching you and you must pay 200€ fine to get your computer fixed, remember YOU ARE THE VICTIM OF A BULLY! But be assured that there are people out there, like me, who can remove this problem and that greater powers are hunting down these gangs and shutting them down by locking them up! See you Friday afternoon 12-4 at Jacks Bar in Albox. The fixing costs but the learning experience is free. REVIEW it...

Shorts for Autumn by Various Writers Deception Unlimited by Betty Woodcock. With his bloated belly, matchstick legs and tangled punkrocker style fur, he looked like a child’s drawing come to life and he also looked pregnant. Woodcock overemphasises the message through the plot which has so many twists and turns that you wonder if you are on a rollercoaster which is about to crash: don’t be deceived by first impressions. True nature will out. Things aren’t always what they seem. Fortunately the bad guys are caught and everything turns out satisfactory after chaos and mayhem dominate the lives of the Bennetts. And this is NOT Pride and Prejudice or the Waltons. As one might say: never a dull moment in the Bennett household. The Bennetts have more than the average number of skeletons in the closet even for a dysfunctional family at constant war with each other and the world at large, with the occasional truce. The story cleverly satirises a working class family at its worst being battered from pillar to post with drug scams, surrogacy, infidelities and pregnancy scams. It’s all there in abundance to entertain and amuse you. Perhaps even confuse you. Crystal Bennett is a battleaxe of a woman, seething that she has been displaced by a Scrubber and you will lose count of the number of times she attacks her estranged husband, Robert trying to kill him with the bread knife. It turns out that he is an innocent party with a squeaky clean image after all (apart from the spell in jail) but worryingly, crazy enough to move back in with his loony wife and unpredictable, unstable children: Bryony with the pink hair, Tommy and “ it rocks man,” Malcolm. Crystal despises poor Robert when she has hidden secrets that would detonate a bomb and cause destruction on a large scale. The truth will out woman as they say. And what an idiot she seems to be. Robert is a saint in comparison. These people are sad little people trying to make their lives that bit more interesting so what do they do? Yes you’ve guessed it! They invent stories and they pursue lives full of deception and once their lies are discovered they become neurotically emotional, turning on crocodile tears for show of illusionary remorse. Bryony is a pro at this. Our heroine, Tommy Bennett, takes us on this frenetic journey returning from a holiday in the States to the realisation that her holdall has been swapped and a disturbing noise from her car boot confirms that something is seriously amiss. My holdall convulsed and heaved as if about to vomit. Startled I stumbled back… What is inside? Nothing other than a frightened dog, its mouth taped and its feet bound smuggled into the UK for a

pretty obvious purpose. A brief mention of gleaming drug-filled condoms and you’ve cracked it. Was it anything to do with the man on the plane emitting sinister vibes with a saturnine face more akin to the underworld of L.A. or who would do such a thing to a harmless beast of a dog? That’s one of the storylines waiting to be unfolded. Tommy’s boss has transformed his garage where Tommy worked as a mechanic into a Speed-Dating Agency because of his car business which had gone belly up with crooks and some dodgy deals and this garage is the main setting for the action with many unwholesome characters coming and going with police activity on overdrive. Gordon is a decent guy just wanting to make a living. He is low in confidence after the scams and his wife’s affair. He sees himself more as Ozzy Ostrich ( not Ozzy Osbourne although I see a resemblance) with his head in the sand than George Clooney or for you young ladies, Justin Bieber. Tommy was engaged to Mitch until he shot her but he still gives her goosepimples when he smiles at her. No comment. As a policeman he breezes in and out of the action like the bad penny that won’t go away. Tommy also has this thing with one of the bad boys, Hopshead who has a reputation for getting involved with drugs and irritatingly has a limited vocabulary of “hello gorgeous.” He must be okay because he has an Elvis smile. But perhaps he’s not one of the baddies after all? Perhaps Tommy is just a poor judge of character. She is after all one of the Bennetts. Say no more. Just when we think we’re on top of it all, we have a Tommylook-a-like, attacked just outside the garage, followed by a big police investigation to find out who this identical twin is and why she was attacked. What has this got to do with feisty Tommy who spends more time looking pale and droopy like a Victorian heroine being attacked and beaten up? Was she the intended target? More skeletons in the closet and a Charmaine takes centre stage with a phoney French accent and an interesting story of make-believe. Not another Bennett? Is it harmless make-believe or just a bit O.T.T? Tommy sees through it but what should one expect in the house of secrets or the lives of the Bennett family? Appearances can be deceptive…..it’s all a question of psychology or unlimited deception perhaps as you will discover when you read the book!? Available on ekindle/ereader or Createspace.

The brilliant Nikola Tesla

Tesla was born in 1856 in what is now Croatia; academically gifted at 14 his teachers suspected him of cheating as he’d work out complex sums in his head. He went on to finish the 4 year course in just 3. He was then bedridden for 9 months with cholera and then ran away to avoid the draft. At Polytechnic in Vienna his claim that he studied from 3am to 11pm is probably true as he admitted in later years to never having more than 2 hours sleep a night. He excelled in his first year though his family were warned he would die from overwork. Then he argued with his tutors and got addicted to gambling, losing then winning back his allowance and tuition fees. By exam time he hadn’t studied, was refused an extension and left without graduating. In 1882 Tesla worked for the Edison Company in France, then when relocating to New York a couple of years later his money was stolen and arrived penniless. He started work for Thomas Edison who allegedly offered him $50,000 if he could fix all the problems with his DC motor system. Of course Tesla did exactly that yet when he asked for the reward he was told it was just ‘American humour’, he resigned and set up his own company in 1886. Tesla favoured AC motors yet his investors disagreed and sacked him, again he was penniless and worked as a labourer before setting up the Tesla Electric Company. Within a year he had perfected his own AC motor, selling the system in 1888 to Westinghouse for $60,000, a $2000 a month (nowadays equal to $60K) consultancy position and future royalties on the electricity his motors produced. This was the time of the ‘War of Currents’ which pitted Edison against Westinghouse to decide whether AC or DC would be the future power supply for America and the world.

As the stakes were so high Tesla was able to negotiate this almost extortionate price as his was the first commercially available AC motor. Within a few years Edison was broke; by 1897 Westinghouse had paid out over $200,000 in royalties and was close to bankruptcy, so a negotiated final payment to Tesla of $216,000 (about $6m nowadays) bought out the royalty clause on Tesla’s patents they were using. In 1899 Tesla moved to Colorado Springs and set up a laboratory for his high voltage experiments. He created artificial lightning which was so powerful that its thunder was heard 15 miles away, light bulbs glowed even when turned off and sparks flew between the earth and peoples feet as they walked. The generator six miles away burnt out. Tesla was way ahead of his time; he experimented with radio, radar, wireless power a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, even a Death Ray. One year before the X-Ray was officially discovered Tesler took the first ever X-Ray picture when trying to photograph the hand of his friend Mark Twain. Tesla even built a radio controlled boat which the audience were convinced had a trained monkey inside steering it. Like the Death Ray before, he tried to sell the design for use in torpedoes to the American military without success. Tesla chose to live in hotels, dining alone at precise hours, he had friends amongst his contempories yet seemingly never had relationships with women. Tesla was a brilliant man and was awarded about 300 patents in his lifetime yet he died alone and penniless in 1943. The American Government seized his possessions in case they could help the enemy!

angling news with Beachcomber john

Me, Julie, hubby Keith and ‘Medway Chris’ had a morning out with ‘Orca Steve’ we trolled and caught a few tuna before settling for some bottom fishing between the river Abajo and the Repsol Garage. We caught mackerel, weavers, combers, pandoras and white bream, bogues and pickerels. Also a lizard fish and a sardine for me, two rather unusual fish to catch. ‘Computer Mark’ and ‘One at a time Richard’ joined me for another trip out with Steve and again we trolled but this time without any takes. Bottom fishing the usual marks boated, weavers, bogues, pickerels, red snappers, single banded, striped, pandora and couch bream. My long time mates ‘Moody Git’ (Kev) and Richard plus Mike who is on holiday from the UK and staying in Arboleas went out with Steve (Again). We trolled for the first couple of hours and the last half hour and caught plenty of melva and bonito tuna and possible some baby yellow fins.

As juveniles many tuna s p e c i e s are almost impossible to tell apart without close inspection. B o t t o m f i s h i n g various marks we caught, striped bream well over 1lb, weavers, a black bream (We haven’t seen many of those since the new marina was built and the area of sea in front of the harbour wall was decimated. Pandoras, bogues, weavers, red snappers and couch bream made up the rest of the catch. I nearly had a big one when I hooked a 35 to 40lb sunfish on the surface but when he dived the hook pulled out even though my clutch was very light. Shore Fishing ‘London Bill’ caught small tuna and mackerel from Macenas Rocks, method was spinning small Mepps. The Albox fishing club fished from the Indalo Hotel rocks one day from 11am until 4pm. A reasonable day was had, except for ‘Dennis the Menace’ who blanked. ‘Jaguar Jack’ caught 8 fish = 6 palometes, 2 weavers, receiving a sting from one. ‘Tony always Laughing’ had the best day with 10 fish = 4 good size palometes, 1 saddled bream, 1 weaver, 2 bogues and 2 small palometes. ‘Rock steady Eddie’ caught 8

fish? = all small. ‘Flash Gordon’ = 6 fish? = all small. ‘Squiddly Sid’ - 6 fish all palometes, three were a good size and big enough to take home. Coarse Fishing ‘Puentes Ray’ made a visit to Lake Puentes, it was a beautiful warm day with no wind. Puentes water levels are still rising and Ray was fishing about 3 feet further back than normal. As water levels were high he decided to try a new spot but not far from where he usually fishes. He started on feeder with banoffee! flavoured fake maize and was into fish almost immediately and a better stamp than usual. The carp in Puentes are definitely putting on weight now. He fished steadily until lunch time and then changed over to a stick float in about 10 feet of water using halibut pellets on a hair rigged bait band. It went absolutely crazy, screaming reels one after another. Ray took eight barbel in about 30 minutes, the biggest being just under 4lb before it dropped off a bit and he went back to catching carp all around 2-3lb Ray left at 5pm having had a really enjoyable day; he will definitely persevere with the pellets in future. See photo of ray with a Puentes barbel. Matches in Murcia were won with weights of 30lbs and 41lbs. For up to date information on fishing licenses or any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. 19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador Thursday 27th September, back we went to Aguilon for our Monthly Medal round. A depleted number of players, due to illness and holidays, enjoyed very good weather conditions and, in spite of the hollow tinning, a course that is a pleasure to play. Mark Danson proved to be untouchable scoring a net 70 (par) playing off a handicap of two and scoring an Eagle at the par five 6th hole, a great performance from a very unassuming excellent golfer. Peter Easthope playing his last game with the 19th Hole Golf Society prior to returning home also had a good day, Peter, playing off a handicap of 5 finished with a net score of 72 closely followed by Nick Pogson on 75 including a Two at the par three 4th hole, Nick is really enjoying his golf now that he is no longer the Catering Manager for the absent Ron Curtis! John Ball and Tony Slinn both had a really poor day, both missing short putts with equal precision, Tony suggested a visit to Specsavers might benefit them both but John said he wouldn’t be able to find them!! not surprising that they won as two of the three players played better than their handicap.

We had 37 players including two guests taking part in a Best 2 stableford competition with two hidden holes. With Terry Green’s new rules the two hidden holes only count in the event of a tie. They came into play on this occasion but both teams had the same score on the hidden holes. So the tie was decided on lower handicap.

Last place and chocolates went to Alan Sharpe, Elaine MacMillan, John Nolan and Doris’s twin sister Doris with a score of 71 points. It is not surprising that they came last as their best player was Doris scoring 30 points.

The winners were Brian Downey, Rudolph Galiart, Cynthia Witham and Doris (our imaginary player) with a score of 91 points. It is
