The Policía Local de Níjar PORTUGAL STEALS celebrates the Day of its Patron SPAIN’S THUNDER The Policía Local de Níjar celebrated the Day of its Patron, Los Santos Ángeles Custodios, (The Guardian Angels) in an official ceremony at the Iglesia de Santa María de la Anunciación de la Villa de Níjar The ceremony, which culminated with the laying of a wreath in memory of deceased officers, was attended by the Alcalde de Níjar, Antonio Jesús Rodríguez, Municipal Authorities, the Jefe de la Policía Local, José Gázquez César and members of the Policía Local. After laying the wreath the ceremony moved to the Glorieta where the officers formed ranks to honour the singing of the Himno de Andalucía (Anthem to Andalucia). The Alcalde gave an address thanking them for their daily work to maintain order and ensure the safety of nijareños, the demonstrations shown of their courage and their good work. The Jefe de la Policía Local, José Gázquez César said that this was a celebration of their work, highlighting the vocation of each of the officers, and their commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens. During this event very special recognition was given to the police who managed to thwart a robbery at a hotel in the area. The offenders tried to stage a robbery at the hotel without realising that local police officers were having coffee at a nearby location. The officers, realising what was occurring, immediately intervened, arrested the robbers, and prevented the attack in a heroic manner.

The Portuguese housing market has experienced an 80 per cent year on surge in sales since the right to residency scheme was endorsed by parliament. Described as the Golden Visa scheme it is attracting non European Union buyers and investors. Residency in Portugal is available to buyers who invest a minimum of €500,000 in property. It is thought that this will further support the country’s recovery. Chinese and Russian buyers are fuelling the recovery. Fine and Country, a real estate agency placed at the high end of the market reveals property valued at €40 million has changed hands during the first six months of 2013. Chinese buyers are fuelling the recovery. The lower end of the market is inactive as banks have no lending liquidity. The long term

view is that those with more than half a million Euros in their wallets will have the means to add to their Portuguese investments. The Golden Visa scheme is further supported by a flat rate of 23 percent tax against all income earned in Portugal and zero tax on earnings accumulated abroad. Those with pensions are exempt. Nigel Salmon, director of Girasol Homes , a real estate market leader that operates in both Portugal and Spain says, “Our Portugal office has seen a 30% increase in enquiries over the past 4 months. However, Spain is still the dominant market for us, especially in Modern Design in the Alicante Region of Spain where sales have doubled.” Spain is still playing catch-up. A real estate pundit says, “providing that other countries do not produce more attractive schemes, we look forward to the future with confidence.

citrus sales boom Between January and July Almerían companies have sold more than 30 million kilos of citrus to the foreign market, 2.7% more than the same period last year. It is estimated that these sales have earned Almería 20.4 million euros, 10 % more than last year, which means that these products have obtained a better price than in 2012. Italy is the largest foreign buyer of oranges from Almeria (38%), followed by Germany (22.3%) and France (17.3%). Almería Oranges are also exported to Algeria, Holland, Poland and Russia. Between January and July, the export value of lemons exceeded 4.7 million, representing an increase of 2.8% over the same months of 2012. Germany is the main destination for these citrus fruits (38.8%), followed by Italy (19%).

Address: 28 de Febrero, s/n, 04800, Albox, Almeria

The export value has reached 3.7 million, nearly 3.4% more than the previous year. Again it is Germany who is buying the greatest amount, with a gain of 21.6%, followed by Italy (20%), Poland (18.6%), and the Ukraine, Russia and Romania with more modest gains. In short, the statistics are: Germany buys more than 30 % of Almerían oranges. Between January and February, 12 million kilos of citrus, 26.5% more than in 2012 was exported. Last January Almería exported 6.4 million kilos of citrus. Over the whole year Almería exported 53% more citrus than last year.

landslip of las lomas The new equipo de Gobierno de Zurgena is already working with Protección Civil to clarify the origin of landslip on the hill of Las Lomas. This has been one of the issues focused on in the recent meeting between the Alcalde, the Concejales of the Ayuntamiento and the Subdelegado del Gobierno in Almería, Andrés García Lorca. Although the landslip did not occur until November, the underlying cause was the torrential downpours which occurred between September 27, 2012 and the first days of October. The Ayuntamiento de Zurgena has invested over 350,000 euros in the repair of Las Lomas, which qualifies it for the payment plan of the Gobierno to pay the local entrepreneurs who participated in the repairs.

A CHIMNEY OR FLUE NEEDS CLEANING ONCE A YEAR! WHY? • T O REDUCE THE RISK OF A CHIMNEY FIRE BY • • REMOVING SOOT AND TAR TO REMOVE A BLOCKAGE SUCH AS A BIRD NEST! TO INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF YOUR APPLIANCE (ESPECIALLY WOODBURNERS)

The Consistorio has not received any help so far except for 18,000 euros for the Protección Civil, despite the Diputación Provincial as well as the Junta de Andalucía showing their intention to collaborate economically. The Alcalde and the Concejales announced their ‘satisfaction’ with the promises given by the Subdelegado del Gobierno, who understood ‘perfectly the gravity of the situation’ and who, through the meeting expressed his intention to collaborate with the financing to diminish the expenses of the Ayuntamiento. ‘He is a very human person, who appreciates Zurgena and the unity of its neighbouring families.’ Said the Alcalde, Luis Díaz, at the end of the meeting.

CUSTOMER SERVICE OFFICE NOW OPEN IN ROQUESTAS DEL MAR www.asssa.es – info@asssa.es Currently, many European citizens are experiencing changes which are bringing the effects of the crisis in Spain much closer to home. Some of you may be losing your entitlement to a SIP card while others, who already have private insurance, are finding out that their insurance company has been bought out by another insurance group. This has imposed limitations on their level of service or even on their quality of cover. Many have since discovered that they will no longer be able to visit the private doctor of their choice because the new company does not have a contract with them any more. Are you in either situation? Would you consider a reasonably priced private health insurance with ASSSA so that you can visit local, English speaking doctors in Spain? Are you privately insured, but dissatisfied: premium increases; no customer service in your language; your insurance company has radically reduced and changed their services? ASSSA offers you impartial advice and tailor-made solutions with special offers available and special conditions for those transferring in from another private insurer. Personal advice and support even after signing your contract? With our insurance company, this comes as a matter of course. ASSSA has, for over 75 years, offered its customers in Spain excellent private health insurance at an affordable price. For the last 20 Years we have specialized in meeting the private health insurance demands of our European fellow citizens along the Costa. In order to achieve this superior customer service and customer proximity, we have set up a chain of customer service offices along the coast. ASSSA - Experience, Expertise & Customer Service Our personal service is unique. Our friendly, multilingual employees are pleased to inform you of both our achievements and policies without any obligation to purchase. Our philosophy is to answer all client queries fully and with complete honesty. Many of our clients join us on recommendation from existing ones, which is a clear indication of our unique service. After joining ASSSA you are allocated a personal contact that speaks your language and assists with any questions that you may have. Your personal contact will deal directly with you for medical assistance, offering her

personal empathy, help and support. Doctors and Hospitals. We offer our customers an extensive directory of private clinics, GP´s and Specialists working from some of the best private healthcare hospitals. In order to comply with the wishes of our clients, we make contracts with facilities most of whom speak your language or offer a free translation service. For this reason, we have many English speaking medical professionals under contract with ASSSA. Quality insurance We provide flexible levels of health insurance depending on the cover level and premium best suited to the client’s requirements - from a supplementary insurance (from 44 € a month) to a more fully comprehensive insurance cover (from 84 € a month). During the current economic crisis we are pleased to be able to offer discounts until the 10.12.2013, of up to 30% for the entire contract lifetime and also 50% discount for children under 16 insured with parents, plus comfortable monthly payment without surcharge. In addition, we offer dental insurance reduced by up to 20% (from only 68 € per annum). Insure your health! The benefits of ASSSA insurance: ASSSA offers a variety of unique, written, contractual guarantees. The age at which you sign your contract is always used as the basis on which to calculate your premiums, i.e. the premium does not increase due to increased age. In addition, ASSSA provides protection against policy cancellation from the first day of insurance. Contracts with ASSSA are of course, in your native language as transparency is important to us. Roquetas de Mar office is offering all our unique benefits as mentioned above with a special introductory offer when you contract a policy with ASSSA between 01/10/2013 – 12/12/2013 and RECEIVE YOUR FIRST MONTH FREE. Most people find that there are small things that they didn’t think about until after the builders had finished construction. Here are some, in no particular order, that they wish they would have added into their build: Charging plugs in the kitchen for items that may end up living there. Full size broom cupboard to hide all the cleaning items away from sight. Prewired security system Run wire and prepare roof for future solar panels. Run conduit under your driveway just in case you need to run wiring or plumbing in the future. Run a 2” pvc pipe from ground floor up to second floor, for any future wiring. Put charging plugs in closets for charging a cordless vacuum. Plan a specific place for your dog and/or cat food, treats, and bowls. Make sure you have enough space to hang long clothes. Enough plugs in the bathroom/bedroom. You need more than you ever imagined! Inside switch for your outside lights. An inside light for your bathroom/medical cabinet. Recess your fridge. If you have 2 doors into the same room, make sure you have a light switch for that room at each door. Storage for Christmas tree decorations! Heated towel racks. Pre wire a motion sensor for selected exterior lights. Adjustable shelves in cupboards. Multiple taps for outside. Master switch in the master bedroom that controls all exterior lights (in case you hear something in the night) A light switch at the head of your bed so you can turn out the light once you are in bed.

Power outage flashlights that plug into an outlet to keep charged. Place them in strategic places for use in power cuts. Make copies of all product manuals prior to installation of equipment, finishes and fixtures. Add a mosquito system. It’s a system of tubes and pipes installed in your walls that automatically mists mosquito spray along the outside perimeter of your house and wherever else you choose to put a spray pump. Apparently the spray can help combat other flying insects such as wasps and flies. Here are a couple of links about the system: http://www.mistaway. com/watch-the-mistaway-video.html and http://www.mosquitonix.com/mosquitonix. A master switch at each exit (Front, back or garage), that turns off all of the power to the switches/lights in the house, so that you can turn off all lights without going to each room. Photos of electrical, plumbing, and windows before drywall goes up for future reference. Record the locations of wires and pipes in the walls, try to measure the location of anything under a slab, and various utilities outside. Make choices that are handicapped accessible. You never know when life will change for a family member for a recovery or a lifetime. Having an entry, bedroom/ bathroom accessible or easily converted may make your home more suitable for you and also open a market to you in case of resale. Closet lights on the hinges. Goes on when the door opens and off when it shuts. Kitchen features such as: Drawer microwave Knife drawer Pull-out bin for rubbish/recycling/laundry (for dirty dish towels/napkins/bibs!) Paper towel/film/foil holder in drawer slot Drawers for all lower cabinets (more efficient use of space) Place to store fresh fruit Easy-access place to store frequently used appliances Place to hang aprons Place to hang hand towels Place to store broom/mop, etc. Dimmer switches in the bathrooms for middle-of-the-night trips. A built in ironing board, recessed into the wall, with space to keep the iron and supplies.

What a wonderful time of year this is! the broiling heat of summer, that sapped the strength out of us has gone; the days are still long and sunny, in fact it is the ideal time of year for those ‘in-between’ jobs that need doing, but that get left ‘for another time.’ Routine maintenance around the house is always best done before things get out of hand and actually go wrong, and almost always saves big headaches later on. But who has the time? The busier we are, the more we let things slip, especially those things that work all right without any attention. Door locks are a good example. Even an average-quality lockset will deliver years of troublefree service. When it begins to fail, it’s easy to think the mechanism is just a little sluggish. But don’t let the lock go unattended until it simply stops working, or worse, until you break off a key in the lock. At the first sign of rough operation, simply squirt a few drops of light household oil on the key and work it back and forth and side to side in the lock slot. This will clean and lubricate the moving parts, and extend the life of the lock for many years. When you’ve finished, be sure to wipe the oil off the key and lock!

28 golfers including 3 guests took part in a Reverse Waltz competition with two hidden holes at a much later start time than recently of 13:22 for the first tee time. The weather was kind to us with sunshine and not much wind even though we finished quite late. The winners with a score of 85 points were Jacqui, Anita G, Jim Sh and Peter Wa. They beat the 2nd place team by scoring 2 points on the hidden holes compared to the second teams one point. However they would have won anyway on lower handicap. Last place and chocolates went to Nina, David C, John N

and his guest Ian A with a score of 58 points. Nearest the pin was won by Mel with a distance of 2.90m. Thanks to Lennart for announcing the scores and giving out the prizes this week. It is a shame that no matter which way he tried to do the scoring Jacqui’s team beat his for first place. Two golfers played better than their handicap this week. Well done to Peter Wa and Ivan who both scored 37 points. The Friday golf next week starts at the earlier time of 11:54.

Look Good Feel Great October is here, and so is the flu jab season! Temperatures are beginning to fall, especially at night, and when temperatures go down, fevers go up. To avoid the aches, pains and generally feeling terrible, follow these Cold and Flu Safety Tips: Wash your hands. You’ve heard it many times before, but washing your hands is the single most important way to stop the spread of flu. It is estimated that about 80% of infectious diseases are spread by touch. Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough. Don’t use your hands, unstead, use the crook of your elbow or a tissue. That way, the germs won’t get on your hands and get spread around. Disinfect tabletops, doorknobs, remote controls, and toys. Flu germs can live on surfaces for hours. Go disposable. If someone in the house is sick, consider switching to paper products, such as towels and cups, for a week. Take care of yourself. Can eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress help prevent flu? There is no proven answer, but doing so may help keep your immune system strong and more capable of fighting off a flu virus. Fast Flu Facts: Flu is contagious a day before symptoms appear, and for up to 5 or 7 days after. Flu viruses spread mainly through droplets made when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks. Why Do I Need to Get Vaccinated Every Year? ‘The virus is sort of tricky in the way it reproduces from year to year, in that it shifts its chemical coating from season to season,’ explains Geoffrey A. Weinberg, MD, a pediatric infectious disease specialist and professor of pediatrics at the University of Rochester. “Even if you’ve been getting flu shots for several years you need to keep it up, because next year’s flu could be very different.” For instance measles and chickenpox only take a couple of childhood immunisations to provide full protection, but those diseases are caused by only one strain of virus, and they don’t change.’ Says Weinberg. How Well Will the Flu Vaccine Protect Me Against the Flu? Each spring, public health experts around the world predict which three flu strains are most likely to circulate and cause illness in the coming flu season. Based on their predictions, the flu vaccine is formulated to protect against those three or four strains. When the experts have made a good match, the vaccine is up to 90% effective in healthy adults. Even if the vaccine isn’t a perfect match it’s still worth getting, experts say. Each vaccine protects against three different flu strains, so chances are at least one of them is circulating in any given season. Plus, when you get vaccinated against one strain of flu virus, your body makes antibodies that protect you against related strains, even if they’re not exactly the same. When Do I Need to Get the Vaccine? Get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine is available at your doctor’s surgery. Do not wait until cases of influenza are already in the community - Influenza is very contagious and travels very quickly. The vaccine takes about two weeks to take full effect, so if your neighbour comes over coughing and sneezing and you haven’t had your flu jab, watch out!

Because experts are never sure exactly when in the flu season the first viruses will hit, earlier is better. Get the vaccine as soon as it is available and it should protect you through the whole flu season, even until March. I’ve had the flu and it’s no big deal. Then either you are a super-person, or you had a cold or respiratory infection. Flu is a big deal, it knocks you for six, and confines you to bed for maybe up to a week. It is not a virus that you can ‘tough out.’ And even if you are a super-person, the rest of us aren’t, so we will thank you very much to get the vaccine, and not infect the rest of us normal humans! The vaccine gave me the flu. You probably know at least one person who claims he or she came down with the flu days after getting a flu vaccine. However, the vaccine wasn’t to blame for the ailment. “It’s a very commonly held myth, but it’s just that,” Weinberg says. “It’s absolutely impossible scientifically and medically to get the flu from the inactivated vaccine shot. You can’t catch the flu from the vaccine, because the version of the virus used in flu shots is dead. In the nasal spray vaccine the virus is severely weakened, so it’s not likely to cause more than a few sniffles or sneezes. Chances are, your friend either had a bad cold or another respiratory infection, not the flu.’ Most side effects from the influenza vaccination are mild, like soreness at the site of the shot, a low-grade fever, or a little achiness. You’re actually far safer getting the vaccine then skipping it. “There’s a much higher rate of getting complications if you take your chances with the real disease than if you get immunised,” Weinberg says. There are toxic levels of mercury in the vaccine. There is a product called thimerosal, a mercurycontaining preservative used in certain vaccines. All vaccines that are marketed for use in young children no longer contain thimerosal, but it is still found in some vaccines used in adults, including certain flu vaccines. Researchers have studied thimerosal extensively, and they haven’t found any connection between the preservative and autism or any other serious health risks. But, if you’re worried, you can ask your doctor to use a thimerosal-free vaccine.

Look Good Feel Great Taking a cold bath after exercise can soothe sore muscles but it is unclear whether this is safe, say experts. Plunging into chilly water can provide a shock to the system and may even be harmful, researchers at the UK Cochrane Centre warn. After looking at available trial evidence - 17 small studies involving 366 people - they say there is not enough evidence to back the technique. There may well be other better ways to ease muscular aches, they suggest. This might include a spot of light jogging or a dip in a warm bath, they say. The idea behind submerging the muscles in icy water, sometimes referred to as cryotherapy, is to reduce swelling and the associated stiffness and soreness that comes with working the muscles hard. The trend started in elite level sport, but it is becoming increasingly popular amongst amateur athletes too. In the studies that the Cochrane team looked at, participants were asked to get into a bath or container of cold water after running, cycling or resistance training. In most trials, participants spent between five and 24 minutes in water that was 10-15C, although in some cases much lower temperatures were used or participants were asked to get in and out of the water a number of times. Lead researcher Dr Chris Bleakley, of the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, said: “We found some evidence that immersing yourself in cold water after exercise can reduce muscle soreness, but only compared to resting or doing nothing.” But there were too few studies that compared cold baths with other interventions to say that it is the best strategy for sore limbs. And safety concerns remain unanswered. Dr Bleakley said: “It is important to consider that cold water immersion induces a degree of shock on the body. “We need to be sure that people aren’t doing anything harmful, especially if they are exposing themselves to very cold water for long periods.” Leonie Dawson, professional adviser to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said: “This isn’t advisable for everyone. If someone had an underlying heart condition then the shock could be damaging.

Cold baths ‘ease aching muscles, but may be risky’

“And for anybody with Raynaud’s - a problem of the circulation - it would have a devastating effect on them.” She said it would also be important to ensure that the water was clean for hygiene reasons: “Some rugby clubs have a wheelie bin filled with cold water that the players will use one after the other, even if they have open cuts and injuries from the playing field.” She said, generally, applying something cool on the skin to reduce pain and swelling was safe. “It makes up part of the PRICE guidelines - Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation - for managing soft tissue injury. “But it is worth remembering that some of those gel ice packs you can get go down to temperatures of minus 20 and if you go to sleep with them on you can get a rather nasty ice burn.”

THE HILTONS CATTERY

...take care of your pets October is “Adopt a Shelter Dog Month” The need for good homes for dogs is higher than ever. At Fetch! Pet Care, shelter dogs hold a very special place in our hearts, as many of our Fetch! owners volunteer for shelters and have adopted shelter pets themselves. The owner of Fetch! Pet Care, in the Hollywood Hills in California, Peggy Kennedy, took the time out of her busy day to speak about her two shelter dogs, Duval and Roo, who are an irreplaceable part of her family. Peggy first meet Duval, a Pit Bull, when he was a Fetch! client. Peggy and Duval became instant friends on their walks together, and when Duval’s owner could no longer take care of him, Peggy took him in. Peg’s husband initially needed some convincing, but after a few cuddle sessions with Duval he was sold! During the day, Duval stays busy visiting elementary schools where he is a certified therapy dog. He ‘sits in’ on reading classes with children once a week. He also enjoys tagging along with Peggy to pet and adoption events. His favourite foods are muffins and pastries— but these are not a part of his regular diet! Peggy also has Roo. Roo i a Pit Bull mix, who Peggy met when she came to the shelter ‘red listed.’ recommended to be euthanised. She was suffering from mange; a skin disorder caused by parasites, and she didn’t get along well with others. Because of the skin sores caused by the mange and her social problems, Roo didn’t have much chance of being adopted. Peggy took her home temporarily, so Roo could avoid being euthanised. Over the next three months Pegfy spent endless hours with Roo helping her to overcome her behavioural problems and, when Roo still couldn’t find a home, Peggy decided she was there to stay! Unlike Duval, Roo is full of energy and spends her days at agility classes, running and hiking. Roo’s favourite food is popcorn! Many people say that shelter dogs seem more grateful to their owners, but Peggy says she’s the one who feels differently towards her dogs because she knows what would have happened to them had she not adopted them. By adopting them, she opened the door for these two great dogs to have a good life, while making room at the shelter for another dog to get the same opportunity. You can give a shelter dog the opportunity for a better life by adopting or fostering; contact your local shelter to learn how you can make a difference.

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Q. My father has deceased in Aguamarga,Almería , Spain .He had a house in Spain worth approx. 200,000 euro and a bank account in Jersey worth £70,000.He was a Spanish resident and had made a will leaving his house and account to his three children in equal shares. (all three of us are resident in Sevilla ) A. You need to declare to the Spanish tax authorities both the house plus the funds (in any case the Spanish tax authorities in Spain know of its existence as I presume your father will have declared the existence of the funds in Jersey on his 720 form. The good news is that no tax will be due because each of the three children is entitled, as resident in Andalucia to an exemption of 175,000 euro on an inheritance received from his/her father. The law in Spain is simple: If the heir is a Spanish resident he/she pays inheritance tax on anything he/she receives anywhere in the world, (unless bilateral agreements with the country where the assets are situated say otherwise which is not the case with the UK) If the heir is non-resident of Spain he/she only pays inheritance tax in Spain on the assets he receives that are situated in Spain at the time of death.

10 ways to stop leaks

so avoid it wherever you can. When you do need to lift something, such as when picking up children or shopping bags, tighten your pelvic floor muscles before and during the lift.

5. Fight incontinence by losing weight Being overweight can weaken your pelvic floor muscles and can cause incontinence because of the pressure of fatty tissue on the bladder. Your symptoms may improve, and could clear up completely, if you lose the excess weight. 6. Treat promptly constipation

The Izquierda Unida of Roquetas de Mar has publicly denounced the Equipo de Gobierno, who they claim are responsible for the dumping of rubbish and waste on a private plot of land in the Barrio de Buenavista. They claim that Ayuntamiento lorries have been dumping rubbish on this plot for several weeks, and the IU is demanding immediate cessation of these discharges, urgent removal of rubbish and cleaning of

Equipo de Gobierno denounced

the plot. ‘During a visit we have seen the stink that follows this accumulation and the abundance of flies and insects.’ Says Juan Pablo Yakubiuk, concejal de IU. He added that the neighbours have complained about this situation because the plot used as landfill is surrounded by houses and residential complexes. teleprensa.es

For many people with incontinence, the following self-help tips and lifestyle changes are enough to relieve symptoms. 1. Do daily pelvic floor exercises Pelvic floor exercises can be really effective at reducing leakage, but it’s important to do them properly. You may have to do pelvic floor exercises for three months before you see any benefits. 2. Quit smoking If you smoke, you put yourself at risk of incontinence because coughing puts strain on your pelvic floor muscles. 3. Do the right exercises High-impact exercise puts pressure on your pelvic floor muscles and can increase leakage. Sit-ups can also make you leak by straining your pelvic floor muscles. If you want to strengthen your pelvic floor to relieve symptoms, replace jogging and aerobics classes with Pilates. This gentle method of stretching and strengthening core muscles is becoming more popular as a treatment for stress incontinence. 4. Avoid lifting if you have incontinence Lifting puts strain on your pelvic floor muscles

Straining to empty your bowels weakens your pelvic floor muscles and makes leakage worse. Never delay the urge to empty your bowels. If you have constipation, it may help to change your diet and lifestyle. Eating more fibre and taking more exercise can help. It may also help if you change the way you sit and use your muscles to empty your bowels. 7. Cut down on caffeine Caffeine irritates the bladder and can make incontinence worse. Coffee has the biggest effect, so stop drinking it or switch to decaffeinated. Fizzy drinks, tea and cocoa also contain caffeine, so cut down on these too and replace them with water and herbal or fruit teas. 8. Cut down on alcohol to improve incontinence Alcohol is a diuretic, a substance that makes you urinate more often. Cutting down may help your incontinence symptoms. 9. Drink plenty of water Drink six to eight glasses of water a day unless your doctor advises you otherwise. Many people with urinary incontinence avoid drinking fluids as they feel it causes more problems. However, limiting your fluid intake makes incontinence worse because it reduces your bladder’s capacity. 10. Eat the right foods Avoid spicy and acidic foods, such as curries and citrus fruits, as they can irritate the bladder and make leaks and other incontinence symptoms worse.

As a result of operation “Kawayasu” initiated last July, officers of the Guardia Civil del Puesto Principal de Roquetas de Mar, have arrested N.D. 29 years old , and M.B., 40, both of Roquetas, for 10 crimes of motor vehicle theft, a crime of criminal organisation and criminal damage. The Guardia Civil began investigations after the theft of 8 motorcycles and two scooters in Roquetas de Mar and Vicar from communal garages. After comparing all the information obtained about the thefts the officers discovered that the modus operandi in each case was to disable the various video surveillance systems and override the existing infrared sensors of the entrance gates to the garages, then access with a van into which the stolen vehicles were loaded. As a result of the various investigations, the officers focussed their enquiries on a resident of Roquetas de Mar. They established a discreet surveillance on his home, where up until the end of September, he was loading objects into a van. The officials responsible for the investigation, identified N.D., who with M.B., had loaded into the cargo area of the van the fuel tank of a motorcycle wrapped between clothes. When questioned the two could not prove legal provenance, and showed obvious signs of nervousness, which makes the agents suspect that the part had its origin

2 arrested under operation Kawayasu in one of the stolen motorcycles.

The officers requested that the vehicle should be followed by other agents of the Guardia Civil. These officers, who were driving behind the van, saw the passenger throw an object out of the window. They retrieved the object, which turned out to be a license plate. The officers stopped the van, and conducted a search, during which they found various motorcycle parts; brake systems, batteries, shock absorbers , fairings , tyres, exhausts, three chassis, two motors used for irrigation, one electric and one diesel, and various documents. In the course of the investigation, the Guardia Civil carried out a search of the house of N.D., and found various chassis, engines, motorcycle fairings, parts and mechanics, and hidden under mattresses and in the vicinity of the house was me, a motorcycle packed in pieces. After verifying all the information the Guardia Civil arrested N.D. and M.B. for 10 crimes of motor vehicle theft, a crime of criminal organisation and criminal damage. The officers managed to recover a total of 8 motorcycles, 1 dissembled moped and the license plate of a second moped. The Guardia Civil are still investigating the whereabouts of the last moped, and the owner or owners of the irrigation engines. Further arrests related to this case have not been ruled out.

Saturday, October 5th, in the Colegio Altaduna de Roquetas de Mar, the VI Torneo de Ajedrez Altaduna-Saladares was held. It was organised by the Colegio Saladares, in collaboration with the Colegio Altaduna and the Club de Ajedrez Vícar. Enrollment in this tournament cost a nominal one euro per player, as the aim of the tournament was to promote chess among children, especially among young children from 5 years of

VI Torneo de Ajedrez Altaduna-Saladares age. There was a free breakfast provided for all children, and on this occasion, elders and parents could participate as well, allowing families to enjoy a day of chess with their children. Players of all ages were registered, and there were promotional tables for children under 6, who could play a few games and were given medals as a reward for their efforts . The Colegios Altaduna and Saladares consider chess to be a training exercise, developing personal learning strategies and logical reasoning, and fostered attitudes such as perseverance, order, discipline and sportsmanship through play. The Torneo de Altaduna-Saladares is the third test in the I Circuito de Ajedrez Nacex (www.circuitoajedrez. com) that has been organised by the Chess Clubs of El Ejido, Indalo, Vicar and Roquetas de Mar to encourage chess in the province of Almería with a

total of four rapid games tournaments. The last of the four tournaments will be held on 26 October in Roquetas de Mar, with a Grand Final. In addition each tournament trophies, scores were awarded for the top 10 players in each category: Petates, Prebenjamines, Benjamines, Alevines, Infantiles, Absoluta y Padres. The Grand Final Trophy, which will be awarded at the end of the Roquetas tournament, is sponsored by Mensajería Nacex.

s ie p p u p r e h d n a Fany

Last Saturday a well meaning volunteer brought a little dog to the shelter. She had begged for food and then followed her to her car. The volunteer’s natural instinct was to rescue the dog and take her to the shelter. That is when the drama started, because it was discovered that the dog had recently had puppies. She was obviously still nurturing them. That is when the drama started because as the hours passed, FANY started whining because her breasts were filled with milk and they hurt her. Erika, the shelter manager decided that the only way out of this desperate situation was to go on a search for her puppies. She drove to the place where FANY had been found and started looking around. After a while, she found three little puppies and took them back to the shelter to their mother. Sunday morning came and Erika became more and more concerned that there were more puppies to be found. This time she set off with FANY because she believed if it was possible to find the remaining puppies FANY would be of invaluable help. Erika’s intuition paid off and FANY was able to lead her to two more of her little ones. Thus, the story has a happy ending and all five puppies, four girls and one boy, were reunited with their mother. Now, of course, the fight is on to save the lives of all of them. They will receive a couple of weeks of intensive care. Then their vaccinations can be started so that eventually the puppies will be ready for homes of their own. A lot of these dramas could of course be averted if only owners of dogs could understand that neutering is vital. If this were done, then the shelter would not have this continuing problem of having to save the lives of countless puppies. Hopefully one day people will realise that not having their dogs neutered and then allowing them to wander the streets is causing a tremendous problem. Dumping them out of cars, putting them in sacks or boxes is not the answer. If it was not for the devoted volunteers at the shelter things would revert to the days when packs of wild dogs roamed the streets of Roquetas in search for food. They would jump on tables and snatch food, desperate to survive. This puts everyone at risk, including children of

course. The only way to stop this happening is to support the shelter and help it survive. They are doing a vital Job. Dogs are domesticated animals and should be living with families and not have to roam the streets. The dogs cannot be blamed for the situation getting out of control. Do not allow this to happen. If you want to help, please contact Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com as usual. If you have anything in your house that you don’t want, don’t throw it away. It could be sold at one of the markets to help fund the shelter. Volunteers of course are always wanted to help walk the dogs on Saturday mornings. As always there is always good news. Last Saturday, fifteen very lucky dogs started their journey to forever home is Germany. On Sunday evening, news started coming in that all the dogs had arrived safe and well. Their new owners were all delighted.

Festivals in Spain – October Andalucia is filled with fascinating cultural events throughout the year. Whilst many of these festivals take place on the date indicated each year, others move slightly in relation to the day of the week or the religious calendar or occasionally the weather. If you want to be certain of the date of a particular Festival, check on the Ayuntamiento website of the town in question. 4th October: Cádiar, Alpujarras, at the Plaza del Pueblo, Traditional Feria in honour of Santo Cristo de la Salud. Notable for the installation specially for the Feria of two taps, one of which dispenses wine during every day of the Feria, while on the other flows water to wash the glasses. 5TH October: Moclin, Granada. Romeria del Cristo del Paño. Instead of the usual statue, this festival features a painting left in the town by the Reyes Catolicos. The name comes from a miracle a century later involving a sacristan who nearly went blind from cataracts, which were known as “enfermedad del paño”. As he was cleaning the painting, he regained his sight. 6 - 7 October: Montoro. Feria and Fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Rosario Attractions of this Fiesta are:Flamenco dancing, bullfights, a special lunch in honour of the senior citizens of the town, concerts and a livestock fair. 6 - 9 October: Salobreña, Granada. Romeria del Sur de Granada and Fiestas de la Virgen del Rosario. A Pilgrimage takes place on either the first or second Sunday of October, and fiestas in first week of the month. The Romeria’s arrival point is the Playa del Peñon in Salobreña, with a mass on the Paseo Maritimo, while the Fiestas feature flamenco, food tastings, horse demonstrations, a float competition, and a night-time procession on the final day. 7 - 10 October: Torredonjimeno, Jaen. Mercado and Fiesta Medieval Visigoda “Villa Torre de Don Ximeno”. The townsfolk dress up and medieval food is served. there is storytelling, street theatre and many children’s activities. 12TH October: Santa Fe, Granada. Anniversary of the discovery of America, also celebrated on 12 October throughout Spain as Dia de España. 15 – 19 October Seville Guitar Festival. Competitors play Eliminatory round, to qualify for Semi-final round, with 4 players going forward to the final round, where they will play a work by Manuel de Falla. Open to all guitar players of any nationality who were born after 12 October 1977. The final will be held in the CICUS Auditorium, C/ Madre de Dios 1, Seville. Nerja Feria - Feria de la Virgen de las Angustias y San Miguel Arcángel (2nd week in October) 5 or 6 days of firework displays, processions, concerts and varied activities, many of which are free, though most of the concerts levy a small charge, around 10 €. There is a fairground, with trade marquees. A Feria Queen is elected, there is traditional flamenco dancing, and many locals go wearing flamenco costume. 15 – 20 October: San Pedro de Alcántara, Marbella. Displays, stands. street entertainment and outside bars and restaurants. 16 October: Dos Hermanas, Seville. Romeria de la Virgen de Valme The Virgin is taken from the Parish church in Dos Hermanas, Santa Maria Magdalena, to her ermita in the Cortijo del Cuarto, in Bellavista, a barrio in the south of Sevilla city. One of Andalucia’s most popular Romerias. 21-25 October: Bonares, Huelva. Fiestas de Santa Maria Salome The patron saint of Bonares is taken through the streets, with music, dancing and children’s activities. There are october food festivals throughout andalucia - The autumn harvest is a time of great celebration with a wide variety of festivals to celebrate food and drink. Also in October: Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos. This festival is very popular in the East of Spain, in Andalucia in the provinces of Granada and Almeria, and takes place on different days throughout the year depending on the locality. Dia de España marks the anniversary of the date that Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas, and is a public holiday in Spain on October 12. On this day the King of Spain, Juan Carlos 1st supervises the raising of the Spanish national flag in the centre of Madrid, after which He and the Prime Minister, currently Mariano Rajoy lead a military parade. The parade includes representatives from most of Spain’s military units and various military vehicles. Armed forces’ planes perform aerobatics above the parade route and display yellow and red smoke to represent the Spanish flag. Dia de España is a Red Day, so equivalent to a Bank Holiday. Businesses which ignore the regulations and compel their workers to attend can be subject to swingeing fines. Thus most stores are closed, although some bakers and food stores may be open to fulfil public need. Public transport services generally run to a reduced schedule, although there may be no services at all in rural areas. People in the Aragon region in the northeast of Spain also commemorate Nuestra Señora del Pilar, who is their patron saint, and whose Festival falls on the same day. According to the Julian calendar, Christopher Columbus set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera in South-West Spain on August 3, 1492. He landed on an island that is now part of the Bahamas in the Caribbean on October 12, 1492. The anniversary of this date is what is now known as Dia de España. Similar events marking the anniversary of the date Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas are also held in other countries: October 12 is known as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, Day of the Cultures in Costa Rica, Day of the Race in Argentina, Chile and Mexico and the Day of Indigenous Resistance in Venezuela. However, the second Monday of October is Columbus Day in the United States.

CLASSIC LEMON CHEESECAKE

email your favourite recipes to editor@soltimes.com Method: Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Have ready a loose-bottomed cake tin about 20cm across x 9cm deep (8in x 3½in). Whiz the biscuits to crumbs in a food processor. Gently melt the butter in a saucepan over a low heat. Tip in the biscuit crumbs and stir until coated. Press the mixture evenly into the base of the cake tin, using your fingers or the base of a tumbler. Place all the ingredients for the filling, except the sour cream, in the bowl of a food processor and whiz until smooth. Carefully pour the mixture on top of the biscuit base (you can use the back of a spoon as a chute to avoid disturbing the crumbs). Bake the cheesecake for 30 minutes until just set and slightly risen – it may also be just starting to colour. Remove and leave for 5-10 minutes for the surface to level, then smooth the sour cream over the surface and return to the oven for 10 minutes. It may still appear slightly shiny and liquid but it should firm up on cooling and chilling. Remove and leave the cheesecake to cool, then cover with clingfilm and chill overnight. Serve the cheesecake chilled. for

Pete and I were feeling the lack of lunch as we left Torrecárdenas Hospital, so to combat this hollowness we pulled off the motorway and headed into a Bar which bears the name of the age at which one is traditionally supposed to receive the key of the door. I ordered a Coke, a shandy and a plate of chips for 2. The barman fetched out a small bottle of Coke and a glass for Pete, then poured half of a small Fanta Limón into a wine glass for me, which he then topped up with beer. I wondered at the choice of a wine glass, concluding that he thought I was too ladylike to drink out of a tubo. However, I took our tiny drinks back to our table, and awaited the arrival of the chips. I very much like the Spanish patatas fritas, irregular slices of real potato, usually with the skin still on, cooked in olive oil, and served dangerously hot. As the waiter placed the plate of chips between us I was a tad unnerved by their uniform appearance - the Army would have been proud to produce such regimentally regular chips, but I had been hoping for something a bit more freestyle. However, I was hungry, so I josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

Wined Me Up and Let’s Dance Every year I promise myself that I will not write about the new series of Strictly Come Dancing, and every year I do the exact opposite and cannot resist penning a few lines about Brucie and Co. It’s always the same story, with some of the new crop of celebrity masochists wowing us with their grasp of tripping the light fantastic, but more often than not, it’s the shenanigans of the others doing the complete opposite that grabs our attention. These are the ones that are as adept at the Foxtrot, as Sumo wrestlers are to the long jump. But of course, this is what the programme is all about. I am not a great fan of the show, but with the threat of castration hanging over me if I so much as look at the TV remote, I have either the choice of slinking away to my computer or sloping off to the pub. In the first instance I am told that I already spend far too much time at my desk, and in the latter that we have enough booze in the house to float the Queen Elizabeth so why put money over the bar. I am therefore obliged to put slipping and sloping to one side and sit watching with a beer in my hand, while the dancers Tango, Jive, Waltz and Charleston their way across the dance floor and Sir Bruce struggles with the words on the autocue. But I have to say that the appearance of Dave Myers on the programme – he of the Hairy Bikers fame – had me thoroughly glued to the TV throughout his brilliantly bonkers Cha Cha; which hitherto I had thought was the name of a Giant Panda at the London Zoo and not a dance. Dave came out of the blocks like a whippet connected to the mains and it was obvious by the huge grin on his face, that he was going to throw himself into the thing and enjoy the experience come what may. This was true entertainment and had me laughing out loud and holding my stomach . . . much like the time I prepared Dave’s recipe for lamb tagine with eggs, although that was probably the cook not the recipe. Show number two will have been screened by the time this goes to press, but I sincerely hope that Mr Myers will have survived the viewers vote and be with us for many more weeks to come. He was a welcome breath of fresh air and will have me actually looking forward to Strictly from now on, which is totally new territory for me. And talking about dancing; we recently had one of the best evening’s entertainment for some time when our favourite entertainer Woody, played the New Tavern in San Miguel. The sort of music he plays has that ‘must get up and boogie’ quality that is so appealing to people of my vintage. No not jitterbugging thank you very much, but classic 50’s and 60’s rock’n roll with a heavy emphasis on Woody’s speciality . . . the music of Buddy Holly. It takes a lot to get me up to dance - usually two bottles of house white - but typically, once I am up and running it’s difficult to get me to sit down again. Not that I am a great dancer and certainly no Fred Astaire - more of a Fred Flintstone if I’m honest. And have you noticed that when there is live entertainment, everyone who gets up to go to the bar or visit the khazi, does so in rhythm, popping their fingers and swaying, they glide across the room in time to the music. These are usually the ones who shy away from the actual dance floor though. But Woody’s music is from my era and takes me back to those Mecca and Top Rank days when I would schmooze and gyrate with the best of them in my three piece made to measure Jack Album suit and floral kipper tie. Yeeeah baby. I remember one occasion when two of us approached a

The story of El Raro the hero of Alqueria has been passed down through generations of Villagers. Both the Newcomers and the Hill People have claimed him as their own. It is one of the many reasons why barrio rivalry is so intense. Rogelio Jiminez or El Raro made his name during the Spanish War of Independence where he led a guerrilla band fighting the occupying French. Whether El Raro did much fighting is a point which historians have long puzzled over. Reports of his presence at various battles have put him safely on the sidelines offering advice but very little else. He came to prominence at La Batalla de la Cabra Sonriente. Again evidence of Los Raros as his band were known, having fought hand to hand with the French or even been within a thousand metres of them is very sketchy to say the least. They did however loot part of the French baggage train rejected by others as having no military interest. The cases, trucks, and sacks abandoned by the French contained the clothes of the officers wives including those of Fifi, Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte’s favourite mistress. Raro and his men spent many hours giggling around their camp fire as they paraded in the captured clothes. Fifi’s corset was taken back to Alqueria as a trophy where it resides in the Pueblo’s museum to this day. It is a fine silk whalebone garment inscribed in golden thread, ‘For my big French

hoisted the first chip mouthwards, all my chip tastebuds ready and waiting. Unfortunately, my tastebuds were under the impression that they were going to get real chips cut from genuine grown-in-the-ground potatoes, and fried in oil squeezed diligently from the fruit of the olive tree. What they got was baked cotton wool, otherwise known as oven chips! To say they were disappointed was an understatement, but hunger can overcome all manner of culinary shortfalls, so together we stoically demolished the chips, leaving a clean plate – clean because oven chips have no lubricating oil content to help them slide down the throat. Meal over, I went to pay. ‘9.50 €’ the waiter requested, shoving the till receipt towards me. ‘What!?’ I queried in Spanish. He fixed me with a steady brown eyed stare. ‘9.50€ for half a Fanta Limón, a teaspoon of beer, a teeny weeny Coke and a stingey portion of cotton wool chips? - 9.50 €! I reiterated, in a voice full of exclamation marks. He shrugged, and re-emphasised the stare. ‘Si.’ I stared back with the steadiness of the righteous, and the frigidity of an Ice Queen. It was an empasse. He won. I paid, but I exited with dignity. I come from a nation whose Admiral well and truly whupped the Spanish and their over-hyped Armada – so there!

Boney’. We have some idea as to the calibre of El Raro from military documents. When the Guerrillas were integrated into the Spanish Army his proficiency report simply read. “Can ride a horse, not well but adequately.” As to his bloodline one clue exists. Estefanía La Promiscua, a contemporary of El Raro claimed in her memoirs that he had a birthmark in the shape of a crescent moon on the inside of his left thigh. How the lady had such detailed knowledge of El Raro’s thigh is perhaps something we should draw a veil over. Birthmarks can be the result of minor genetic disorders. Someone with a similar mark may well share El Raro’s lineage. For a definitive answer to El Raro’s barrio allegiance Dr. Enzo Matanzamas undertook the search for the crescent shaped birthmark. Many came forward. Some birthmarks were crudely faked on with lipstick while other industrious individuals had them tattooed on. Only one was genuine and shaped correctly. It was Izar, Manuela’s daughter and of the Hill People’s barrio. Whether Izar will turn out to be the hero of Alqueria like her esteemed ancestor only time will tell.

couple of mini skirted beauties on the dance floor at Tiffany’s in Southampton only to be greeted with the word NO! Well, they obviously didn’t know who they were dealing with and we made it clear we would not leave them alone until they agreed to one dance. They became so exasperated with us that eventually, after a combination

of barracking and sweet talking they agreed, and before the dance was over – a smoochie as it happened – we had won them over. Did we want another dance they enquired as the band struck up the intro to Paperback Writer? NO! we told them, and strode off to the bar. Happy days.

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

braben’s blog...

Do you still have the magic? Not the magic that saws someone in half or turns a silk scarf into a dove. I could never see the point in that one anyway, how would you feel if you said the wrong thing and that expensive new scarf suddenly flew off, never to be seen again. Quite inconvenient really. No not that sort at all; Roald Dahl once said that we should watch everything with our eyes wide open to the magic that’s around us, otherwise we would never find it because magical things are hidden in strange places. I like that sort of magic, you know, the sort that makes things a wonderful mystery and gives us things to consider when we have lots of time on our hands, like on long dark evenings, or while we are waiting for the Town Hall to send someone to sort out the problem with your water connection! The problem of course now is that the magic is too easily explained away when that famous phrase, “Lets Google it!” is uttered. I’m all for the internet and technology, but what happened to the mystery? Bigfoot. It’s supposedly a large hairy creature which is a cross between a human and, well, something else. I suppose if you picture Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid in Harry Potter, then you get the idea. But now, the Google has reports that Bigfoot exists and that the mystery is no more. Listen, I don’t want to know, in the same way I don’t want to know about the Bermuda Triangle-or indeed any other Barry Manilow songs. I like to wonder where the magic is rather than have it thrust under my nose. No, the imagination is fantastic and needs to be helped along, rather than it being replaced by fact. Look at the search for alien life: imagine if we found it and those aliens that were supposed to be interesting, multiple limbed blobs turned out to be a race of Tax Accountants! Firstly, what a disappointment after all those years of Star Trek and secondly, what on earth would Dr. Who do then? But my point is, maybe sometimes it’s better to spend our time looking for the magic rather than finding it because, once we know how they saw the person in half, the trick will never again make us go “Wow!”. Imagine a world without wow!

An early history of the World Cup

Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo. co.uk

The 2010 World Cup Final between Spain and Holland in South Africa was watched by a worldwide television audience of 900 million people; amazingly this figure doesn’t include anyone that watched in pubs, clubs and outdoor events so the true figure was significantly higher as watching football is a social experience. I remember watching the match at a bar in Bedar with scores of others. Over 2 years, a record number of 204 countries attempted to qualify for the 31 spots available in 2010 (the 32nd was given to the hosts). It was all so different in 1930 at the first tournament held in Uruguay; this was an invitation event that attracted just 13 countries. Only 4 European teams took part as the 3 week sailing time across the Atlantic was deemed too long by most of Europe. Uruguay was invited to host the inaugural finals as they had won the last two competitions in 1924 and 1928 at the Olympics. Uruguay did it again and beat Argentina 4-2 to become the first ever World Cup Champions. Football started as a very British affair, the first ever international match was played between Scotland and England in 1872 and ended as a 0-0 bore draw. Then in 1883/84 the British Home Championships started; played between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It was the first ever international competition with Scotland beating Ireland 5-0 in the final. Sadly this competition was stopped 100 years later after the

1983/84 series. The annual England V’s Scotland fixture was also stopped in 1989 though this year the fixture was played again at Wembley and England won 3-2. Over the years England has won 46 times, Scotland 41 with 24 draws. In 1900 and 1904 football was played as a demonstration sport at the Olympics. FIFA was formed in 1904 but struggled to create an international competition outside of the Olympics. At the 1908 London Olympics football became an official sport and Great Britain won with the team made up of amateurs. Great Britain won again in 1912. Sir Thomas Lipton, founder of the famous tea brand set up an international competition in 1909 with each country sending their best club side to represent them. The English FA snootily declined so alongside the likes of Juventus and Zurich, Sir Thomas invited a team from Durham made up of coal miners called West Auckland to represent Britain. In true fairy tale fashion the Brits won 2-0 in the final. Two years later in 1911 they were back and in what would now be a front page upset; beat Juventus 6-1 in the final to retain the trophy. Sadly the trophy was stolen in 1994 from the West Auckland Working Mens Club where it had been displayed since 1911. FIFA then decided the Olympics would be the stage for footballs world championships and Belgium won in 1920. 1934 was the second ever World cup and was held in Italy, this time teams had to qualify and 32 teams were whittled down to 16 for the finals. Uruguay have the sad distinction of being the only team ever not to have tried to defend their 1930 title as they refused to travel in retaliation for most Europeans boycotting 4 years earlier. Italy became champions after an extra time goal beat Czechoslovakia 2-1. Also absent were the 4 British teams as then as now the FA thought they knew better. Charles Sutcliffe of the FA stated that the Home Championships were ‘a far better world championship than the one to be staged in Rome!’

Today (Thursday) I was reading about what is news in the computer world simply because I felt a bit like a blind dart’s player. The darts being pieces of information that are relevant and the board being yourselves. So as I read, I noticed an article on botnets. Never coming across that term before it caught my interest so I read up on it and now pass a ‘decoded’ version on to you. The term BotNet is a contraction from the words Robot and Network (also read Internet). Robby the robot, from the Space Family Robinson series, isn’t anywhere to be seen, which from a sci-fi enthusiast’s perspective is a bit of a downer! These robots are malicious programs thaat have been designed as a type of malware that allows an attacker to take control over an affected computer and use it, without your knowledge, to do any number of illegal activities. These bots are designed by clever people (Bot Masters, as they have been named) to provide, to potential paying clients, any of a number of services some of which include denial-of-service attacks, creation or misuse of SMTP mail relays for spam (see Spambot), click fraud, mining bitcoins, spamdexing, and the theft of application serial numbers, login IDs, and financial information such as credit card numbers (all of which will be covered in the next article). Bots sneak onto a person’s computer in many ways and are often spread across the Internet by searching for vulnerable, unprotected computers to infect. When they find an exposed computer, they quickly infect the machine and then report back to their master. Their goal is then to stay hidden until they are instructed to carry out a task. After a computer is taken over by a bot, it can be used to carry out a variety of automated tasks, including the following: 1) Sending spam, viruses and spyware; 2) Stealing personal and private information such as credit card numbers, bank credentials and other sensitive personal information, and send it back to

the malicious user; 3) Denial of Service by attacks against a specified target. Cyber-criminals can then extort money from Web site owners, in exchange for regaining control of the compromised sites. A similar type of attack was the threat of fines from the FBI or GUARDIA not long back! More commonly, however, the systems of everyday users are the targets of these attacks – for the simple thrill of the bored. 4) Clickfraud which is where fraudsters use bots to boost Web advertising billings by automatically clicking on Internet ads and you get the ‘credit’ for increased interest, which may mean get unsolicited junk mail in your Inbox (thank goodness for “Thunderbird” and Filters)! It is estimated that over one million (1,000,000) computers on the USA are compromised and if you go to www.canducomputing.comoj.com you will find a link to a 4 minute podcast about a woman who’s life was devastated by criminals who accessed her machine. Before we go any future down the path of doom and gloom, you should know that bot’s and botnet’s were originally designed for, and still used today, to ensure the security of major organisation’s networks, and in a very familiar format are used voluntarily and happily by a great many of us. I’m referring to P2P “peer to peer” networks. If you have ever used “iMule”, “Bit/uTorrent” or any of these other P2P programs, you are using a Bot on a BotNet. These programs and the use that they were designed for, despite what anti-piracy organisations claim, are NOT illegal! It is the illegally (without your knowledge or consent) installed programs that are a threat. Time and space are limited in any article so, with your understanding, we will continue with this next week and offer a number of solutions to prevent you being the next victim. See you all in the usual places and the usual times :-)

The Roger and Sylvia Kaye Trophy from Roger Kaye The Roger and Sylvia Kaye Challenge Trophy. Thursday 3rd October, a sad day for the 19th Hole Golf Society. Two of our most popular members Roger and Sylvia Kaye played their final game with us before heading back to the UK to start a new life. To mark the occasion Roger and Sylvia, who have ran the R&S golf business in Los Llanos market Arboleas for the past couple of years, sponsored this Individual Stableford completion at Aguilon. 21 players competed in the Challenge with prizes and refreshment supplied by the sponsors. Brian(Dee) Lowden was the 1st player to show his mettle, Brian managed to throw a 7 iron with such speed and accuracy that the club was lost in the thick rough adjacent to the 11th fairway. But our bright eyed crooners luck was well in, the club was found by another player not involved in the societies game and kindly handed said missile back to him for further punishment. As a matter of interest Brian is having a bit of help with his swing from Neal Evans at Desert Springs. Disappointedly when Neal saw Brian’s swing he suggested singing lessons might be an easier option!!. Lee Coxon was the winner on the day, playing good steady golf, Lee scored 34 points to take the

Boat Fishing. Me, ‘Moody Git Kevin’, ‘Karen’s Pete!’, ‘Our mate Richard’ and newbie ‘Sparkie Mike’ had a day out fishing with ‘Orca Steve’ on his Garrucha moored boat. It was a calm start and as we knew the wind was going to get up later from the south west causing big waves we decided to have a couple of hours trolling the flat

sea. Three species of tuna were caught, bonito/melva and one I haven’t seen in the flesh before, a striped tuna. I trolled a dead bogue that came back in with no teeth marks. Before the wind got too strong we put down the anchor and fished in 90 feet where we saw fish on the sounder. Fish caught were weavers, red snappers,
