friday golf society 28 golfers including 3 guests took part in a Reverse Waltz competition with two hidden holes at a much later start time than recently of 13:22 for the first tee time. The weather was kind to us with sunshine and not much wind even though we finished quite late. The winners with a score of 85 points were Jacqui, Anita G, Jim Sh and Peter Wa. They beat the 2nd place team by scoring 2 points on the hidden holes compared to the second teams one point. However they would have won anyway on lower handicap. Last place and chocolates went to

Nina, David C, John N and his guest Ian A with a score of 58 points. Nearest the pin was won by Mel with a distance of 2.90m. Thanks to Lennart for announcing the scores and giving out the prizes this week. It is a shame that no matter which way he tried to do the scoring Jacqui’s team beat his for first place. Two golfers played better than their handicap this week. Well done to Peter Wa and Ivan who both scored 37 points. The Friday golf next week starts at the earlier time of 11:54.

Super Soccer Stars at the Shelter? If you are a soccer fan you will recognise the names of NEYMAR, PEP GUARDIOLA and JOSE MOURINHO. Well, they are all at the Roquetas dog shelter! Not unfortunately the soccer stars themselves, but their namesakes, three dogs that have been named by the male volunteers. NEYMAR, a male terrier, standing about 50 cm high, was born in July 2011. He was left at the shelter with a wound on his paw, but this has healed quite well now. He is a nice, easy-going dog that gets along with everyone. He is very attentive and learns quickly. Now NEYMAR is looking for a forever home where he can play soccer with his family. Maybe you like the look of the handsome PODENCO ANDALUZ brothers. PEP was named after PEP GUARDIOLA and has a black nose and brown eyes. MOU, who was named after JOSE MOURINHO, has a brown nose and green eyes. These two male PODENCOS were born in December 2011, and left at the shelter when they were six months old. Now they are ready to conquer their place in the world. They are both typical PODENCOS. They are very friendly and playful and would bring much joy and amusement to their family. However, they also need exercise and challenges. They are perfect for people who are looking for one or two playmates and at the same time aware that they need some gentle coaching. PODENCOS as a breed are marvellous, spectacular beings. They are active, full of unsurpassed energy and at the same time docile, amusing and always good buddies. They are loving, sporty, friendly with cats and respectful to people. Last Monday was a day like many at the shelter, except MARINA, the President of the shelter was taking a well earned short break and MARGARET, who was deputising for MARINA was left quite out of breath. A Belgian couple, who had taken PEANUT on trial, decided that they wanted to adopt her. Ana, the vet provided her with a chip, a passport and papers. She set off happily with her new family. A young Spanish couple adopted CUCA on Saturday and collected her on Monday morning. This was followed shortly by a Spanish family arriving to look for a small puppy to help their daughter

get over the loss of a much beloved pet. They chose one of FANY’S puppies who were only found last week by ERIKA. The puppy still needs to stay another week with her mother before it can leave the shelter with her new family. This was followed very shortly after, by a young couple looking for a puppy for their 10 year old son. They fall in love with PACO and carry him off to their son. A lot of good news so far! Then two Spaniards come back with INES, adopted a few months ago as a guard dog for their large property. Unfortunately, INES is just so good natured that she greets everybody with a friendly wag of the tail. So, INES’S good fortune turns to failure and she is back looking for a suitable family again. PRAGA will probably take her place if she passes the test as a guard dog. Things then calmed down a little but at 13:00 the SOCIAL POLICE arrived, and that is never good news. They had brought with them two miserable looking dogs, one adult and the other a puppy. Both dogs are now in quarantine and are being taken care of. Four dogs leave, plus a possible departure, and three dogs arrive. This was just another day at the shelter. There are both small and large dogs at the shelter, maybe there is one for you! If you need information on any aspect of the shelter please ask Geoff at

Jersey To End Banking Secrecy For EU Residents

By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks Jersey is to drop the withholding tax option under the EU Savings Tax Directive. It will be mandatory for financial institutions to automatically exchange information on their clients’ bank accounts, effectively bringing the era of banking secrecy to an end in the offshore centre. This will bring Jersey in line with Guernsey and the Isle of Man, who have already abolished the withholding tax (or “retention tax”) option. It is proposed that the official start date will be 1st January 2015, though financial institutions will be allowed to start earlier

if they wish to harmonise operations with those in Guernsey and Isle of Man. If you live in Spain and have a savings account in Jersey, your bank will pass details about your bank account to the Spanish tax authorities. This will be done automatically each year, regardless of whether the Spanish authorities have requested information. The information exchanged under the Savings Tax Directive is: • Your name, address and residency details • Details of the source of the funds • The amount of savings held • The period to which it relates. Currently, this applies to savings income.

Over the coming years the Directive will be extended to include life insurance products, pensions, employment income, directors’ fees, immoveable property, dividends, capital gains and royalties.

new overseas asset reporting obligation.

This will be another tool for the Spanish tax authorities to use in their fight against offshore tax evasion. It will help them collect unpaid taxes and ensure that foreign bank accounts are fully taxed in future. They will most likely compare the information received with that provided by you on your tax return, and also on Form 720.

In restaurants that exist near the fishing port that focus on Avenida Antonio Machado can quietly enjoy the traditional dishes of seafood. These establishments exhibit the freshness of its fish in windows. Enter one of these restaurants is another added advantage, eating alongside the ships in the harbor. After seeing the wide variety of fish to look at the counter we sat at a table with an excellent view. In addition to the traditional cuisine of the fish fry, we can choose between rice or gurullos with lobster, seafood paella, wheat noodle casserole with monkfish, Fidégua ... After much thought we decided on a gurullos with lobster and an operetta.

Gurullos with lobster

The gurullos are a wheat flour dough shaped like grains of rice that used to be made by hand and left to rest. On the other hand it makes a paste of garlic, dried pepper and tomato and a sauce with squid, onion and pepper. When you add the fried fish, water and crushed mussels. When it has boiled put gurullos, lobster, peeled shrimp and mussels. The chilli and roasted red pepper are the finishing touch.

40 SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

Tuesday 25th of September at half past five in the morning, Marbella para-athlete Javier Mérida completed a 15-hour swim across the English channel, becoming the first disabled swimmer from Spain to accomplish the feat. Mérida, whose leg was amputated six years ago, is now the fourteenth Spaniard to make the journey that normally covers the 32 kilometres from Dover, on England’s southern coast, to Calais in France. He hit difficulties however and sea currents took him off course, adding an extra 15 kilometres onto the already difficult route.

His attempt began at 2pm on Monday with the water’s temperature at 16 degrees centigrade. In compliance with the rules laid down by the Channel Swimming Association Mérida swam without a wet suit and was accompanied by a navigation boat that would only provide basic or vital assistance. Despite his disability, from the start the official observer was strict with the Marbella-born athlete, who lost his right leg from the knee downwards in 2007 from an accident. He had to start from dry land and drag himself into the water until he could swim. Mérida had completed 35 kilometres when the wind changed. “I swam for four hours but made no progress,” the swimmer confessed. After another three kilometres the boat’s crew decided to divert further down the coast to Wissant after realising that it would be impossible for Mérida to reach Calais battling against the strong currents. The Marbella swimmer eventually completed the journey, again having to drag himself onto dry land. There he was congratulated by the observer, who confirmed his feat and said his official Channel Swimming certificate would be arriving soon. Mérida says his next challenge will be swimming Loch Ness in Scotland.
