Four young people injured in a collision between two cars in Aguadulce

Four young people, two men and two women between 20 and 27 years old, were injured when two cars collided on the Aguadulce road, towards the Barrio de San Francisco. The four were taken to the Centro de Salud, but were not seriously injured. teleprensa.es

The ‘Noche del Terror’ in Almería lived up to expectations Organised by the Empresa Municipal ‘Almería Urban’ and the Concejalías de Turismo, Cultura y Desarrollo Económico, as well as the Asociaciones de Comerciantes “Alcentro”, of Hosteleros (ASHAL) and the Asociación de Cocineros (ACRIA), more than thirty activities filled the streets of this historic town. The main events started at 20.00 at the Puerta Purchena, although celebrations were already in full swing at the Plaza Vieja, and in Los Refugios. Children took centre stage in the Plaza San Pedro, which was filled from 7 pm with storytelling, dance, games, music and children in every sort of costume. The main centres of activity were the Puerta de Purchena, Plaza Vieja, Paseo de Almería, Plaza del Educador and Plaza Granero. Puerta Purchena was the venue for an aerial dance display, and the ‘Enamorados de Almería’ staged an Amy Winehouse show. The Plaza Vieja featured the Pasaje del Terror, which was open to those who dared, with full spooky lighting and holographic effects. Also on show was an an exhibition of torture equipment, and in the Casco Histórico a werewolf meeting was held. The Área de Turismo organised four free tours to co-incide with Halloween: ‘Discover the Night of Terror’, ‘Haunted Almería’, ‘Dark History’ and ‘Witches of the Night.’ teleprensa.es

The Ayuntamiento de Garrucha has organised various events to celebrate Halloween Apart from a funfair, there was a children’s fancy dress party, an interactive theatre performance by the Asociación NEWCCCP de Garrucha. The same day the Centro Cultural offered the Casa del Terror, featuring the ‘girl excorcist’ and Dracula himself. The night wound up with the DJ Dani Campos and Trave. teleprensa.es

Pensioners protest The Unión de Pensionistas, Jubilados y Prejubilados de UGT Almería and the Sindicato General de Pensionistas de CCOO Almería, met in front of the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social, to protest against the pension reform undertaken by the Government, and to read a joint manifesto. The leaders of the UGT and the CCOO in Almería, Félix López and Juan Pallarés, have rejected the pension reform proposed by the executive, claiming that it will be ‘a great

SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013 loss of purchasing power for this group, between 14 and 28 %.’ The Secretario General del Sindicato de Pensionistas de CCOO, Antonio Rodríguez García, said that ‘the welfare of the elderly in Spain is being degraded, it is against the interests of pensioners and of society in general and endangers life expectancy by cutting health benefits.’ The average pension in Almería is the penultimate in Spain, behind Lugo and Orense. In Almeria 95,973 pensioners are on an average pension of 697.35 euros. The Colectivo de Mayores de UGT y CCOO demand that the Government: Respect the revaluation of pension commitment. Repeal reforms and curb cuts on health issues. Correct reforms and cuts and implement measures to ensure a level of social services sufficient and adequate for the needs of the population. Ensure that older persons have access to proper health care of all administrations. Help those most in need and meet their basic needs. Increase social services to provide more and better care for older people. Reduce waiting times for hospital and medical tests. teleprensa.es

Connect with your Inner Plant

for waiting? It takes a little time for the water to seep evenly through the soil, so when it arrives at the bottom, you know that the soil is evenly watered all the way through. If you keep on pouring water in at the top, it will saturate the top, then arrive at the bottom in a flood! Never put plants in pots that don’t have at least one hole in the bottom! And always have a saucer underneath – even if the pot never overflows, and you are megahouseproud, you will end up with a ring on the windowsill, or wherever the plant is standing. Larger plants in large pots need watering less often than plants in very small pots, which will dry out very quickly. Cacti and succulents need less watering than thinleaved or flowering plants (although when cacti produce flowers they need a bit more water than otherwise). Plan first, buy second. Decide, (with knowledgeable help) what you want from the plant in terms of effect; what kind of light, space temperature and care you can give it, the go to a good garden centre and buy a healthy thriving specimen. Watch out for plant pests. Some plants are less susceptible to pests than others. Learn how to identify these pests and how to treat them (usually a soil-drenching systemic insecticide will do the job, but not always, so it’s important to learn about these things.) Mould and viruses can also affect plants, but they are less common. Let the plant do its job, but give it a helping hand. A beautiful and expensive plant in an ugly mismatched pot is neither use nor ornament! A beautiful plant in a decorative pot or planter that coordinates with the furnishings can enhance the whole room. It helps the plant a lot if the pot or planter is on a tray with about an inch of aquarium gravel in it. When you water the plant, the water goes into the saucer and evaporates around the plant, making the surrounding

HOME & GARDEN

A plant is not just for outside – a plant can be for everywhere! If you only think of houseplants as Mother-in-law’s tongue, then it is time you broadened your horizons; houseplants come in all the sizes, colours and types imaginable. They beautify your environment, purify the indoor air, bring a naturalistic element to stark walls, brighten dingy corners, emphasise or disguise features within a room, and because they are constantly growing and changing, they bring a lived-in, homely feel to a house. They can be very easy to care for, and here are a few tips to keep them healthy: Get the light right. All plants need light, but not all plants need the same amount or type of light! Identify how much natural light is needed for your chosen plants, and place them accordingly. Water as needed. All plants need water, even cacti, so find out how much or little water they will need when you buy them. A rough rule of thumb is to water sparingly, wait a few minutes, and when you can see water appearing at the bottom of the pot, that’s enough. The reason

air a bit more humid. Make sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the pot, because if the pot ends up sitting in water, the plant’s roots will rot and the plant can die. Place a trivet underneath the tray so that the tray doesn’t sit directly on a wooden or painted surface. The moisture in the tray will cause condensation underneath it, and that can damage wood or painted surfaces. When you water, wipe up any spills quickly.

Some good houseplants:

Floor plants: Dracaena marginata (dragon trees), Ficus (both the large and small-leaved varieties) Sanseveria (mother-in-law tongue) Spathiphyllum (peace lily) Umbrella plants. Avoid bird of paradise, bamboo, palm trees and ferns unless you can provide very good light and high additional humidity year-round. Window and table plants: Kalanchoes, cane-stem begonias African violets, orchids (moth orchids are fairly easy but only bloom once or twice a year; compliment them by surrounding them by attractive foliage plants) Philodendron (pothos or sweetheart plant) Maranta (prayer plants) Syngonium podophyllum (arrowhead plant) Crassula (jade plant) Zamioculcas and Beaucarnea recurvata (ponytail palm) And, of course, the ubiquitous Spider Plant!

PSOE warns Vícar pensioners

The Senador Socialista for Almería, Juan Carlos Pérez Navas, has told Vicár pensioners that the policies of the PP ‘go directly against them and impoverish them every day’ and that ‘in two years they will each lose 1,500 euros.’ Faced with this charge, the secretary of the PSOE of Almeria replied ‘that the PSOE will stand and fight with them against those representatives and senators of the PP in Almería who in many cases do not vote for certain measures, which amounts to an attack on retirees.’ According to estimates made by the PSOE, each of about 96,000 pensioners in the province lost 1,500 euros as a result of not revaluing pensions, pharmaceutical copayment that the PP has imposed, and the increase in VAT for basic supplies such as light, water or gas. teleprensa.es

The 24 will benefit from the Ayudas a la Contratación de la Junta de Andalucía. In October 12 unemployed people worked for a month in two teams of 6 people. In November another group of 12 unemployed people were added to this program.

84 unemployed offered work

The Alcalde de Adra, Enrique Hernando, accompanied by the Concejala de Empleo of the Ayuntamiento de Adra, Carmen Belén López Zapata, the Concejal de Cultura, Moisés Linares, the Concejal de Agricultura, Francisco López and the Concejal de Obras Públicas, Ignacio Ginés, welcomed the 35 unemployed people who are to benefit from the Decreto de Exclusión de la Junta de Andalucía, and who will be employed by the Ayuntamiento of Adra for a period of three months. Of the 35 people, 33 will work at urban maintenance, landscaping and street cleaning, one will be employed in the Oficina Municipal de Información Turística and another in the Área de Deportes. The Alcalde assured them that all equipment necessary for their work would be provided, as would training. He stressed the benefits not only of obtaining employment for 3 months, but also at the opportunity it offered for gaining experience.

‘We will wait until all legal disputes are underway and when legal certainty is guaranteed.’

The scheme is open to those who are in a difficult situation: many consecutive months without employment; who have dependents; an income level below 1.5 times the minimum wage, or the entire family unit is unemployed. teleprensa.es

Look Good Feel Great SKIN CARE

It has been a long and glorious summer, but winter, (or as much of a winter as we get here) is on the way. It will get cold and the wind will blow, though not as much or as often as we might have had to put up with in the UK, and our skin will tend to dry out and need a bit of extra pampering.

Know When to Apply Moisturiser Long, hot showers strip skin of its moisture and wash away its protective oils. Limiting your showers to no more than ten minutes and keeping the water as cool as you can stand can help limit the loss. Lock in moisture by applying a cream or lotion within three minutes of exiting the bathtub or shower. Pick a Moisturiser with Skin-Repairing Ingredients Moisturisers can stop dryness and even tearing if your skin is thin and sensitive. Check the pot for these active ingredients: Humectants: These include glycerin, sorbitol, urea, or proylene glycol. They attract water by pulling it up from deeper skin layers, and are good choices for people with oily skin. Occlusives: Petroleum jelly, lanolin, and beeswax are good examples. They prevent water from evaporating. Barrier-repair compounds: These include ceramide, monolaurin, and linoleic acid. These ingredients, often used in combination with others like cholesterol, help repair the skin’s barrier to prevent moisture loss and damage. Don’t Equate Price with Quality When one large consumer organisation tested moisturisers, it found that both the expensive and cheaper products were equally effective.

Valle del Almanzora: Olula Del Rio

The skin is the body’s largest organ. The skin is both the largest and heaviest organ. The liver is the second largest organ. People with fair skin have fewer melanocytes (the pigment that gives skin its colour) than people with dark-coloured skin. Everyone has the same number of melanocytes, regardless of colour. Your skin type can change during the course of your lifetime. As we get older our skin changes. It may become more dry, less acne-prone, develop more discolouration, and show other signs of sagging. Ultraviolet B rays are the only UV rays that are harmful to the skin. Recent studies show that ultraviolet A rays can also contribute to skin cancer. So, it is important to use a sunscreen that protects against both types of UV rays. If you have cellulite you must be overweight. Genetic factors, skin thickness and age all play a role in the development of cellulite. People who are slim can develop cellulite just as overweight people.

Hair can safely be tweezered, waxed, or shaved from moles without increasing the risk of it becoming cancerous. The severity and duration of acne are the same for both men and women. In fact, young teenage men tend to have worse acne than young teenage women. However, acne is more likely to persist into the thirties and even the forties for women. There are some dermal fillers (like collagen) that, once injected, last indefinitely? No filler will last forever. Each one will fade over time. Only fair-skinned people develop melanoma. People of any ethnic background, or any skin tone can develop melanoma.

Yes, much easier. In some cases they are impossible to remove without leaving a permanent scar.

SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013 them — if you hear them clicking on a hard surface, it’s time for a trim. If you really don’t want to take the easy option, and ask a groomer to do the job, then you will have to do it yourself. But before attempting a trim the nails yourself,

The Well Manicured Dog Your dog’s toenails, just like yours, grow, and unless your dog runs around on hard surfaces that help keep toenails short, you have to clip

ask your vet or a groomer to show you how to trim them to the right length. A dog’s toenail is made up of the nail itself and the quick the pink (when it’s visible) part of your dog’s toenails that provides the blood supply to the nail. Avoid cutting into the quick because it bleeds quite a bit and it’s quite sensitive. If you decide to go for it, here are some tips: Hold the foot steady, but hold it gently. Snip off a small bit of the end of each toenail. Using either the guillotine or scissors-type clippers, place a tiny bit of the nail in the nail clipper and snip.If the nail feels spongy while you’re trying to cut it, stop immediately — you’re cutting the quick! Stop any bleeding immediately. If you cut the quick (often called quicking), you’ll have an unhappy dog and a bloody mess. The quick bleeds a great deal, so if you cut it, you need either a nail cauterizer — a tool that stops the bleeding by applying heat — or styptic powder, which you can apply with a cotton swab. Have a damp washcloth at hand ready to clean up styptic powder and blood as necessary. Quicking hurts a lot, and most dogs remember the experience long afterward. Don’t forget the dewclaws if your dog has them. They tend to grow long because they don’t normally touch the ground and if you fail to cut them, they will eventually grow back into your dog’s foot, which is quite painful. If you use a nail grinder rather than clippers, use the same method — hold your dog’s foot, turn on the grinder, and grind a little off each nail. As many dogs detest having their feet handled, so clipping may never be your favourite shared activity, but getting your dog used to this ritual at an early stage helps you both weather the process. Give your dog a yummy treat after the trimming session, along with a big hug, a boisterous “Good dog!” and a healthy scratch behind the ears, to build up the idea that toenail trimming is not so bad, after all! If you can’t do all your dog’s nails at once, never fear — you can clip them one paw at a time, with other activities or a resting period in between. Last, very important, tip: It’s better to take two teeny cuts than one big one! From How to Trim Your Dog’s Toenails By Margaret H. Bonham from Dog Grooming For Dummies

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com BEING A RESIDENT OF SPAIN OR NOT CAN MAKE A CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCE TO CAPITAL GAINS TAX. NASTY SURPRISE: HAVING WHAT EVERYONE CALLS THE RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE IS NOT PROOF OF TAX RESIDENCY AND IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WILL BE TREATED AS A NON RESIDENT AND 3% OF THE SALES PRICE WILL BE HELD BACK. Q. I have sold my house. I was under the impression that I was a resident and that the 3% retention for non residents would not be applicable, but the notary said that my residence certificate was not proof of residency and that he had to treat me as a non resident which means that 3% of the sales price was retained and paid into the tax office. How can the resident certificate not be proof of residency? A. What the notary is saying is correct. It is a common nasty surprise at the notary lately suffered by sellers that are not getting the correct advice prior to selling. The new resident certificates without photograph issued by the police do not state you are a tax resident of Spain. What it says is that you are a resident of Europe. To be able to be treated as a tax resident of Spain at the moment of sale, you need to provide the notary with a certificate issued by the tax office in Spain stating that they consider you a tax resident of Spain. This needs to be requested in advance of going to the notary by your solicitor or yourself to avoid the 3% retention. Some notaries will also accept as proof of residency your Spanish tax returns. If you are thinking of selling, it is important to find out from the tax office well in advance if your status is that of a resident or non resident, and the certificate issued by them needs to be taken to the notary the day of signature.

“Ladies do lunch”

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION 2013 POPPY APPEAL Thursday 31st October saw a large gathering members and friends at Club de Golf Serena in Roquetas De Mar, where they extended a warm welcome to a large party legion members from the Mojacar Branch.

of Playa of

Over 80 attended the luncheon, which was the second in a series of POPPY events organised for this year’s POPPY appeal.

“As you can see by the photo ‘Ladies Do Lunch’ Halloween special was a great success. Thanks to all that made an effort to dress up and also to those who didn’t, all 22 ladies had a great time. It never ceases to amaze me what a lovely bunch of women we have here. The next ‘Ladies Do Lunch’ will be the Christmas on and will be held on the 29th November. We are holding it early so our regular ladies who will be going back to UK for Christmas won’t miss it. Limited spaces so book early. Julie, Bar Southern”

The diners were regally entertained by Paul and Caroline Johnson and their dance class members prior to the meal, when they gave a number of exhibition dances. The demonstration was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience and was confirmed by their loud applause. Following the meal, the guests were entertained by singers Peter and Helen again to loud applause. Everyone seemed to enjoy the afternoon before the Roquetas Branch bade farewell to the Mojacar members, who returned home by coach. Chairman, Mike Hickman, gave a number of thanks to all those who organised the afternoon which raised 408 Euros for the 2013 POPPY APPEAL! Many thanks to all those members and guests who attended. The photo shows both Committees from Roquetas and Mojacar taken is the splendid surroundings of the Golf Club.

Roquetas de Mar is a town which has grown into a city with a population of over 85,000. The town, name meaning ‘small rocks in the sea’, has a history dating back to preroman occupation times and also has a strong connection to the Moorish rulers of the area from 710 A.D. – early 1600s. The Castillo de Santa Ana dates from 1510. The old town has an economy based on fishing and agriculture; the large areas of plastic greenhouses to the west of the town are part of one of Europe’s most productive crop growing areas. The narrow streets of the old town are of a typical Spanish seaside town. In the late 1960s and early 1970s a new part of Roquetas began construction, referred to as the ‘playa Serena urbanization’. This development was to promote the area to the growing tourist industry in Spain.

and is a better overall climate that other Spanish Costas, but very hot in July & August often over 40c. At the end of August there is a chance of levante winds from North Africa.

Roquetas de Mar is rapidly developing into one of the most attractive seaside resorts in southern Spain. It is popular with Spanish holidaymakers but increasing numbers of Northern Europeans are choosing to visit.

Roquetas does not have the brash, mass tourism of other Spanish resorts. Life here moves at a much gentler pace but is far from boring because it provides the visitor with both the facilities of a city and the relaxation of beach life.

Roquetas benefits from the micro climate of the Costa Almeria, due to shelter from the high mountain ranges of the Sierra Nevada’s behind it and being in a large bay. The area has the record for the highest sunshine hours and least rainfall for the entire Mediterranean coast of Europe, whilst still having large water supplies from the mountain area. This provides winter sunshine to rival the Canary Islands,

Roquetas has a number of attractions that include the Aquarium, the Mario Water Park, the bullring, the Theatre Auditorium, cinemas, museum, and boat trips.

image:www.unique-almeria.com

A broad spotless blue flag beach with toilet facilities, lifeguards, children’s play areas, disabled access and a palm tree lined seaside promenade ‘The Paseo maritimo’, that stretches for 10kms all the way to the town of Aguadulce, is the towns pride and joy. Las Salinas beach, to the east of the ‘old town’, is windy and used by wind surfers, kite surfers and for boating. The other beaches of the urbanization are more sheltered. The beaches are of fine coarse shingle and sandy in places but all good for sand castles.

For those interested in activity holidays there are golf courses, ten-pin bowling, sport centres and numerous cycle paths.

RASPA is improving at her foster home In previous accounts of the life at the LA MOJONERA PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR, we introduced two dogs that were abandoned at the shelter in a very poor condition. We feared that one of them, RASPA would not survive. She was looked after at the clinic, the most urgent priority being for her to gain weight. Fortunately, although being in an advanced state of starvation, she never had any other serious health problems like Leishmaniosis or other diseases transmitted by ticks. We made an appeal on Facebook for a foster home, and shortly afterwards a young couple visited the shelter to take her to their home. RASPA is progressing nicely now and is being closely monitored by the shelter’s vet. The best news so far is that once RASPA is strong enough to travel, she will have a forever home in Germany. The young couple who are fostering RASPA have now become volunteers after meeting BLONDIE at the veterinary clinic where difficult cases are taken for treatment. They were so impressed by BLONDIE that they decided to help the dogs of the shelter.

BEFORE

after

RASPA is pictured when she arrived at the shelter and again, after just a few days with her foster family. TIGRI is a different case but she is also in need of a lot of care and attention. She is an extremely shy mongrel who would not look at anyone when she was abandoned at the shelter. She either stood in a corner, looking fixedly at the wall, as you see her in the picture, or lay down on a cushion with the same evasive attitude. Her message to the world seemed to be ‘Please ignore me, I don’t exist for you’. The therapy for her was to bring her to the clinic, where she was left alone but where she could see people and other dogs. Carefully the volunteers would approach her and stroke her briefly. Eventually, after a couple of days, they would take her in their arms. She has also been given the job of foster mum to the CARTONCITOS PUPPIES who cuddle close to her. It is hoped she will eventually learn to trust people again. Unfortunately we don’t have a picture of the puppies at the moment. Do you fancy dog walking? The volunteers gather on Saturday morning for an outing for some of the dogs. Any information about the shelter can be obtained from Geoff at geoffalmeria@ hotmail.com

SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013

The Story of the Christmas Cake In the GREAT HOUSES, into the cake was baked a dried Bean and a Pea. one in one half and the other in the other half. The cake was decorated with sugar, like our icing, but not so dense, and ornamentation. As the visitors arrived, they were given a piece of the cake, ladies from the left, gentlemen from the right side. Whoever got the bean became King of the Revels for the night, and eveyone had to do as he said. The lady was his Queen for the evening. In smaller homes, the cake was a simple fruitcake, with a bean in it, which was given to guests during the twelve days of Christmas. Whoever got the bean was supposed to be a kind of guardian angel for that family for the year, so it was an important task, and usually, it was arranged that a senior member of the family would get the bean! This was observed until recently in Poland in fact. In Britain the cake was baked as part of the refreshments

offered to the priest and his entpourage who would visit on the feast of the Epiphany, January 6th, to bless each house in the parish. this custom died out after the Reformation in the late 16th century.. In Mallorca, the main island of the Spanish Balearics Islands, they have a similar custom which takes place at Easter. The festive cake in Britain was revived at the end of the 17th century, and became very much part of the Twelfth night partying again. It is recorded In royal households, that the cakes became extravagantly large, and the guests divided into two side could have a battle with models on the cake! One battle was a sea battle, and there were minature water canon on the cake which really worked!

TWELFTH NIGHT This is the Church festival of Ephiphany. The traditional day when Christians celebrate the arrival of the Magi or Three Kings at Bethlehem. It used to be the time when people exchanged their Christmas gifts. The feast was marked, as were all the old feasts, by some kind of religious observance. A visit to the church, a service or some kind, and then a folk observance which was tightly wrapped up as part of the Church activities. As we have seen, Twelve Day (the day following Twelfth Night) entailed the blessing of the home, and in some countries is still observed. But after the Reformation, these customs of the Church were banned by the Puritans, and fell into disuse. Without its religious overtones, Twelfth Night became

Preparation: Heat the oven to 300°F/150°C/ Gas 2 The temperature is low as the cake needs a long slow bake. It is packed with sugars, fruits and brandy and if the temperature is any higher the outside of the cake will burn and the inside be undercooked. Line a 9 inch cake tin with 2 thicknesses of parchment or greaseproof paper. Tie a double band of brown or newspaper paper around the outside. This acts as an insulator and to prevent the cake from burning on the outside read more about why here. In a large roomy baking bowl mix the currants, sultanas, raisins, peel and cherries with the flour, salt and

spices. In another large bowl cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the lemon zest. Add the beaten egg to the butter mixture a little bit at a time, beating well after each addition - do not try to rush this process as the mixture could curdle. If it does curdle simply add a tbsp of flour and mix again, this should bring the mixture back together. If it doesn’t come back together, don’t fret, the cake will still be delicious. Carefully fold in half the flour and fruit into the egg and butter mixture, once incorporated repeat with the remaining flour and fruit. Finally add the brandy. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared cake tin making sure there are no air pockets. Once filled

a time of mischief and over indulgence. By 1870, Britains Queen Victoria announced that she felt it was inappropriate to hold such an unchristian festival, and Twelfth Night was banned as a feastday.

THE ARRIVAL OF THE CHRISTMAS CAKE The confectioners who made the cakes were left with boxes full of figurines and models for Twelfth Cakes, and also had lost revenue by the banning of the feast. So they began to bake a fruitcake and decorate it with snowy scenes, or even flower gardens and Italian romantic ruins. These they sold not for the 5th January, but for December Christmas parties. And it was thus that we developed the Christmas cake.

BOILED PLUM CAKE FOR THE COLONIES People in Britain began to make the boiled fruitcake to send to their families who had gone to the new world colonies - in Australia, Canada, etc. and to send to those who worked on the missions. The boiled cakes lasted bestter than the baked ones, and in those days of the 19th century, they could take many weeks or months even to cross the world by ship. These cakes were usually sent as part of a Christmas Hamper of food and presents, and this way the tradition of Christmas cake, often eaten with a piece of cheese or apple pie, became known all over the world.

smooth the surface with the back of s spoon and make a slight dip in the center (this will rise back up again during cooking and create a smooth surface for icing the cake). Finally, using a piece of paper towel clean up any smears of cake batter on the greaseproof wrapping, if left on they will burn, and though it won’t affect the cake, it doesn’t smell too good. Stand the tin on a double layer of newspaper in the lower part of the oven, if you have a gas oven ensure the paper is well away from the any flame, and bake for 4½ hours. If the cake is browning too rapidly, cover the tin with a double layer of greaseproof or parchment paper after 2½ hours. During the cooking time avoid opening the oven door too often as this may cause the

cake to collapse. After 4½ hours check the cake is cooked. The cake should be nicely risen and a deep brown all over. Insert a skewer or fine knife into the centre of the cake. If there is sticky dough on the skewer when you pull it out it needs cooking longer, if it is clean, the cake’s done and remove from the oven. Leave the cake to cool in the tin on a wire rack for an hour, then remove from the tin and leave to cool completely. Once cooled prick the surface of the cake with a fine metal skewer and slowly pour over 2 - 3 tbsp brandy. This feeding should be repeated every two weeks up until Christmas. The cake should be stored wrapped in greaseproof or parchment paper in an airtight tin.

viewpoint

For some time now I have been treading the streets with a haughty demeanour. I pace with studied carefulness, my head high, eyes front, and look down my nose at the huddled masses. This is not because of any delusions of grandeur on my part; it is because I’ve got a stiff neck and an iffy back. The combination of both conditions at once means that I have to move with a deportment that makes me look as if I thought I were the better bred younger sister of the Duquesa de Alba. The incomparable Praxedes mended me once, and for a brief spell I skipped like an extremely mature lamb in the Springtime, but in short order the pain returned; my purse does not allow for multiple mendings, so I settled for Being Careful. I needed to find what was causing of all my anguish, and the culprit seemed likely to be the laptop. It sits on its specially purchased, specifically designed desk, a glory of sweeping curves in tasteful MDF Mountain Ash and Crimson. However, due to the sweepiness of the curves, the laptop has to sit well back on the desk. This means that due to the ‘natural ageing of my near vision’ I have to crane forward in my chair to

read anything smaller than headline sized print, resulting in a crick in my neck and a pain in my back. So the distance between laptop and eyes needed to be reduced. I thought long and hard, and the only sensible option seemed to be: Get a different desk. However, I wasn’t anxious to scour the country, possibly as far as Murcia, for another desk and chair, so Pete and I held a top-level conference with a tape measure, during which it was decided that the printer – sitting high and proud on the sweeping curve - was in the way. But the tape measure proved the printer innocent; the root of all evil was in fact the curve. If the curve were not there, the printer could shove along a bit, and the laptop could come forward sufficiently for me to be able to see what I was looking at. I went out, leaving Pete looking thoughtful. I returned to find Andy’s jigsaw on the kitchen table, Pete reading a book, the printer nestling happily on the end of a truncated curve, and the laptop in pride of place, within easy range of my ‘naturally aging near vision’. During my absence he had performed curve reduction surgery on the desk. Ah bliss! I am now sitting comfortably; and I can also see!

Count Your Blessings and Drink the Rum

The thing about bemoaning missed opportunities is that had we taken them at the time, the good things that we have experienced in life since - the places we have travelled to and the people we have befriended - might also have disappeared. Following on from the same theme that I explored some weeks ago, I had reason to reflect on this again recently, when my wife reminded me that back in the 90’s, when buy-to-rent was all the thing and mortgages were easy to acquire, we made the decision not to dip our toes in the waters of multiple property ownership. It has always given us cause for regret in view of subsequent events and I have to hold up my hands here and admit that it was me - not wanting to spoil our mortgage free status - who had harboured misgivings. And not for the first time, we wondered just what our situation would be now had we become professional landlords. They say that one small alteration in the evolution of

species, should we have the means to travel back in time, or the minutest adjustment of a particular historical event, could have a devastating effect on the present day. Our Royal Family could now be of the House of Jagger, or man may not have become the dominant species, with humans being ruled by the dinosaurs.

Come to think of it . . .

Anyway with that in mind, I don’t doubt that our circumstances would be greatly transformed had we taken a different decision back then. Whether for the better or worse though, is anybody’s guess. Sometimes, with the power of hindsight, we can see just what would have occurred with a fair degree of accuracy. For instance, we were desperate to sell our Suffolk cottage back in 2003, in order to enjoy the tapas lifestyle earlier rather than later. I had been offered an interview with probably the foremost property agency in Spain, so all we had to do was find a buyer. But after three rock solid certainties from interested parties had fallen through, we took the house off the market and decided to wait for things to improve. Had we sold, our plan would have been to follow all of the good advice and invest in rental property in Spain to boost our pensions. Well, we all know now just how good that ‘good advice’ was, and I thank the Lord every day that we were unable to sell the Suffolk property until much later. Moreover, the property company that was my potential employer – like many others – no longer operates in Spain. On the other side of the coin; way back in the mists of time, when I was a young Jack-the-lad in Bermuda, the opportunity arose to purchase a parcel of land in the relatively

unknown Caribbean Islands of the Turks and Caicos. Ten acres in all - it was poor scrub land, but with ocean frontage and on the market for twelve thousand dollars. The ‘good advice’ then, was to invest in the islands in anticipation of a property boom in the near future, and Bermudians, having had an association with the Turks and Caicos for many years, supposedly had insider knowledge. It was however, purely speculative and involved a good degree of risk. The cash was no problem, with the banks falling over themselves to lend money, and my Bermudian friend and I thought long and hard about taking the plunge. But being worldly ignorant and concerned only with which party to attend on Saturday night, coupled with the reasoning that: if it’s such a good investment, then why is the land so cheap – we decided against it and ordered another round of Cockspur and ginger.

Huge mistake.

I mean, hyper massive. Not the rum – our judgement! Several years later, the generous British government decided to pay for the Islands own international airport with a runway long enough to take jet liners. Result: mass tourism and an open door for all sorts of property and business opportunities. I calculated at one point – based on what I had read about the acquisition of a parcel of land in the islands by a hotel chain - that our ten acres would probably have fetched

alqueria

Rodriquez considered his grooming of Pedro el Estevado complete with Pedro’s terrible body odour central to the plot. After convincing Pedro of his powers of persuasion, it was in fact Pedro’s B.O. that made people agree and hurry away, Rodriquez sent him among the good folk of the Pueblo, petition in hand. The petition had six paragraphs. The first five putting forward the argument for the repair of the church clock. The sixth simply stated that the Alquerian Constitution should be torn up and Rodriquez made perpetual dictator of the village republic. The mechanism for this ploy was simplicity itself. The worthy people of Alqueria would only be able to stand at most four paragraphs of Pedro’s body odour and would sign simply to avoid the onset of nausea. The fifth paragraph was a buffer for the more resilient but the sixth would be a paragraph too far and never be read. The signatures were however valid for the whole petition. It worked like an evil smelling charm and all signed, Loco Paco scrawled the name Gary Cooper, having recently watched ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ and was away with the fairies again. It isn’t that Rodriquez wanted strong action to revive Alqueria’s fortunes after the débâcle of the Remitbrick and Remitbright projects. He wanted total control of the Republic of Alqueria. He wanted to line his own pockets, to be totally corrupt he needed total power. He believes himself to be clever, astute and very very wise, he is in fact a total idiot. This is also a common failing

among politicians as well as small town plutocrats. Pedro, full of self importance presented the petition to a jubilant Rodriquez. Every adult in the Village signed. All, according to the petition wanted Rodriquez as supremo and coincidentally the church clock to work. All that was needed now was present the document to the Alquerian Government. The Establishment must yield to the apparent suffrage of the people. Those present in the Town Hall when Rodriquez presented his petition reacted by hurling anything handy at the would-be dictator. Manuela, the champion of democracy and local femme fatale pointed out that crucial to Rodriquez’s demand was the tearing up of the Constitution. This document was written on the back of a cigarette packet during the celebrations following the Declaration of Independence. During the Remitroot fuelled binge that followed Loco Paco had used the precious document as a taper to light the Paschal Candle, his befuddled mind believing the celebrations were for the Semana Santa. Rodriquez foiled again, this time by Loco Paco stormed out of the Hall muttering dark threats and promising vengeance.

upwards of eight million dollars. In fact there was a major spread in one of the English national dailies at the time, about some of the T&C islanders who hitherto had scratched a living from the land or sea, being catapulted into millionaire status overnight. Yes, what if? But really, what does it matter. We wake up every day to the sun streaming through the windows. The sparkling Mediterranean is close by; we live comfortably and have our health.

And I still have my rum.

tRAVEL pLANS

Don’t you love going on holiday? I do, I think it’s great, apart from two things; packing and travelling. The sooner they invent self-packing cases the better! As for travelling, well I’m very much in favour of the Star Trek approach to travel-just step into a booth and get yourself beamed to your destination, piece by piece, arriving almost instantly-unless of course they’d run out of dilithium crystals again. Okay, yes I know that there are some drawbacks to the whole beaming up thing-some spoilsports will say it’s dangerous and that after your bits reassemble themselves you could end up with a fragment of another person. Well I’d take a chance; you never know, if I’m lucky, I could get David Beckham’s bank account! One of the Graham is married fascinating things to Helen and has a about travel is daughter, Alice. He coming across other lives part of the year cultures and trying near Albox, but works to fathom out what in Qatar, teaching. If on earth is going on. you wish to contact Fortunately we’ve got Graham regarding books like the Rough this article email: Guides or the Lonely helenandg@yahoo. co.uk Planet series, as well

as the Travel Channel to help us. Some countries don’t seem to have them though. China for instance seems to rely on advice from their Government to help them with their trips overseas, and this is another one of those cases where reality really is stranger than anything you could write. The National Tourist Administration-great name-has published a 64 page guide to help Chinese nationals when they are travelling. Yes, 64 pages! Most people would be home before they finish it. I won’t go through the whole guide, but there were one or two eyebrow raisers in there. Amongst the things that Chinese tourists are advised not do is that they shouldn’t, no matter how tempting it may be, take their life jacket from the plane away with them, as someone else may need it. Yes, you read that properly. There’s a money maker there; can’t you just see a chain of fashionable lifejacket shops for the discerning buyer? Me neither, but Ryanair might. The other somewhat surprising piece of advice was that when using public toilets in a foreign country, Chinese men and women shouldn’t leave footprints on the toilet seat! Let’s just hit pause there. Footprints! I know we’re all different but the mind boggles-what are people doing that leaves footprints on the toilet seat? On reflection, I don’t think I’ll delve too deeply into that mystery; some things are better left unknown, don’t you think?

Out and About

As newlyweds last autumn we tried to explore Jerez de la Frontera; non-stop rain however meant that we only managed the Tio Pepe Bodega and a couple of tapas bars before soggily driving away. So a return visit was on the cards and a couple of weekends ago we drove back under a glorious blue sky. Jerez de la Frontera is known to us Brits for three things; Sherry, its Grand Prix circuit and ‘spit’ Ryanair flights into the airport. I originally worked in the hospitality industry so for purely professional interest it was the alcohol side of things that interested me. We visited the oldest bodega in Jerez, Pedro Domecq founded in the 1700s. It’s a much more laid back and personal tour than Tio Pepe with no sense of urgency, wonderful aromas from evaporating spirits in the huge wine cellars bring a heady delight to the senses. 70,000 American oak barrels

are stored 3 high in the solera system throughout the beautiful sprawling property and there are artefacts everywhere giving visitors an insight into how the various type of sherries and brandies have been produced over the centuries. At one point our guide told us how a special type of black paint is used on the barrels to ensure the humidity inside is kept constant. Then turning a corner, we spied Mr Barrel Painting man knelt on the floor in the gloom with a torch strapped to his head doing his job. Rather like the painting of the Forth Road Bridge I thought as it’s a never ending job. For strictly educational purposes we had tickets for the ‘deluxe’ tasting tour and we sat at a table tasting brandies and 30 year old Sherries only just as the yard arm came round. A clever marketing ploy meant that shop visits are done afterwards and again there was no rush or hard sell. Now for my Christmas tipple I have a 30 year old Pedro Ximenez sherry to look forward to. Mrs Amore was content with her drinks mats, branded glasses, souvenir posters, mouse mat and even a cuddly toy. As in The Generation Game - didn’t we (or they) do well! Afterwards as we sat at a nearby hostelry, nursing cool glasses of

fino our erstwhile tour buddies walked past giving us a funny look. Jerez has a wonderful old quarter which is easy to navigate, its mostly pedestrianised and fairly level too. Having previously visited The Alhambra in Granada, and other Alcaza’s (palaces) in Almeria, Malaga and Seville I have to admit Jerez takes my biscuit castle wise. Simple gardens surround a beautiful mix of twelfth Century Moorish and later Christian architecture including the only surviving Mosque in Jerez, steam baths, and the olive mill with its huge workings. I’ve loved the 1946 film A Matter of Life and Death since childhood; seeing it dozens of times. In it Doctor Reeves has a Camera Obscura in his attic; now one is installed in a tower at the Alcaza. For a couple of Euros it can be seen in action, though it’s a small room with places limited to 8 at a time. A rotating mirror on the roof projects what it sees down onto a concave screen some 2 metres across. The detail is astounding and with blue skies on the day we visited, it was a fabulous and beautiful 360 degree tour of the city. Fittingly it was a Moslem scholar called Alhazen who first put theory into practice building the first one a thousand years ago in Cairo. Viva Jerez!

I seem to getting into the habit of selecting a subject that has an argumentative aspect to it. Today, I might actually have a reason for it! Let’s take a step back. This week, I’ve have several people come to me with a problem that initially looked like another malware attack. Here’s the surprise! The frightening message that was being flashed onto their screen was simply a note that the computer wanted cleaning up (what it actually said was “You have xxxx’s of errors, viruses or malware!” There was a tiny “fixit” button to the side.) We all, by now, have a routine of System Clean; Virus and Malware Scan; De-fragmentation and Data backup once a month (at least those who read, understand and follow the advice in these articles). This is the number one choice to prevent you from needing to come to me to correct the problems arising from neglect. We have, over a lot of articles, discussed which is the best Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, System Cleaner and De-Fragmentation program for you, trying, at the same time, to offer an unbiased opinion as to the merits of each. So you have the, usually free, tools to work with. This incident started a seed question which was “Why would anyone want to pay good money for software that can be found for free or at a vastly reduced cost AFTER they have tried it and found it to be what they actually want / need?”. The first realisation relates to what can be called “Hype over Substance”. A simple example of this is when a politician uses clever

wording to make his affair with the secretary seem like a benefit to national security – WHAT TOSH! The “Rule of Thumb” (read up on the Roman empire) that I use is “How slick is the advertising without actually telling you anything useful”. I have seen TV ads and websites that do everything except make you coffee but don’t tell what you are getting for your money. Polished, shiny advertising that triggers the greed mechanism in your brain, “I gotta have that”, without giving the skinny on what it actually is useful for. The second realisation was actually simple and we see it every day. It is the “keeping up with the Jones’s” mentality. They have the latest version of a program on the newest computer, so why shouldn’t we have the same. Because, we don’t need it! If what you have works, and works well, why in the name of the four winds, change? My laptop (that runs Linux, Windows XP and XBMC) is 10 years old and won’t give in. So why change it?

There you go! Nothing really controversial there. Remember! Date for your diary - 14Th November and 5th December – La Vida (Cucador) – Fayre (Great gifts, Psychic Advice, Buns and Cakes and ME) You’re on a loser if you aren’t there. See you at Jack’s (Friday afternoon’s or at La Vida above.

Timeless for Alzheimer’s

37

On Friday 25th October in lovely autumn sunshine, the ladies boutique ‘Timeless Fashions’ put on their very popular fashion show, this time for the benefit of Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association (AFA). Simon Morton from Sunshine FM was the Dj for the afternoon with Nick Gold making the entertainment complete by singing his, and the audiences’ favourite songs. Unfortunately, Nickie G was unable to come, but her spot was ably taken by Dan Davy All of whom gave of their time and not inconsiderable talent entirely free for the afternoon in support of the Alzheimer’s Ass. and ‘Timeless Fashions’. Some wonderful models showed us the new fashions for the autumn and coming winter ( yes it will arrive sometime !), including Jennie Mutter the Fund Raising Executive from AFA. Not only did we enjoy more than 40 different outfits but the models then gave us some ideas for the festive season with some sparkly and glamorous trousers, tops and jackets. Members of the Alzheimer’s Ass. fund raising team ( Ros. Rosemary, Christine and Judy ) went among the audience with tickets for their raffle, which included vouchers from many of the businesses and restaurants in C.Centre Punta Marina, Punta Prima, the venue for the show.

With the help of the members of The Rascals, who are always around with help for different charities, and particularly when AFA needs help, a magnificent sum of €432 was raised from the raffle, with five collecting boxes they worked tirelessly to fill, • Deliveries to / from UK €250 thus the total for the afternoon was €682~ wonderful! • Monthly runs spain-uk-spain

pause for thought

How rapidly time passes as we grow older! Why Easter seems like only yesterday, and yet October is now passing and Poppy Day already upon us! I often wonder what our Spanish Hosts make of our apparent infatuation with this small red flower, and from such conversations as I’ve had, many seem to be of the mistaken opinion that we’re merely revelling in the past; celebrating the achievements of a once powerful British Empire. But this of course is far from the truth. For whilst there may indeed be an element of celebration that we have been spared to live our lives in freedom, the primary consideration of Remembrance-tide is that of gratitude to the many thousands who over the years have given themselves to ensure we have that freedom. The efforts, the pain, the suffering and sacrifice of so many, not just in two World Wars, but even now as they seek to protect us from much of the potential horror of modern terrorism, surely deserves our gratitude, our donations and a little at least, of our time as we remember them on Remembrance Sunday and at the Armistice Services held on November 11th. And as on Armistice Day we listen again to that reading from the 15th chapter of John’s Gospel: “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends”, I’m sure that many will rightly reflect, not just on those of the armed forces who gave their lives on our behalf, but also of all those we love who are no longer with us, remembering their lives too with gratitude. And for those of us who are Christians, we will necessarily be reminded of the love of Jesus himself, the original author of these words, spoken as he prepared to give his life to win our eternal freedom from the consequences of all the wrong things we so often do. So let’s now wear our poppies with pride and gratefully remember all to whom we owe so much. 2014 Audi Quattro Concept The 30th anniversary of Audi’s Quattro technology spawned this lovely homage. The car we’ll likely get in the showroom, however, will be the product of a Porsche-engineered platform for the VW Bluesport Coupe and Convertible, the Porsche 550 and the Audi R5 (think of it as a not-so-poor-man’s R8). The chassis goal for all three is exceptionally low weight, far lighter than anything presently in this class. Though all three will be sports cars, they’ll achieve im-

pressive fuel economy. Some speculate that the Audi motor will be the 340 hp five-cylinder from the forthcoming TTRS, along with Quattro AWD and DSG transmission, and that the yetmore-serious R5 will be priced above the extremely capable TTRS, and perhaps won’t even be much cheaper than an R8. That gets interesting, because then you’re talking about an Audi competing with the Porsche 911.

2014 VW Bulli Volkswagen’s attempt to disguise a Chrysler minivan as a Wolfsburg-bred flower-power-mobile hasn’t gone over very well, but the brand needs to sell in every segment in this country if it’s going to grow. The Bulli would integrate well with VW’s strategy of multiple models on a single platform. The fivepassenger van would use the next-gen Golf as its underpinnings, and possibly would come as either a hybrid diesel or even an electric-only vehicle, like

the concept shown in Geneva this past spring. And unlike the present Transporter, which has really ballooned from the compactness of the original Microbus of the 1950s and ‘60s, the Bulli is small and squat. Still, modernday adventurers and those with a hint of nostalgia will hope VW saves the show-Bulli’s rear seat that folds totally flat for in-car camping. Source: Popularmechanics.com

‘Pugwash Pete’ took his dad John and his mate Chris out on his Garrucha moored boat. The conditions were perfect; they went straight to a 250 foot hole where they sat most of the day. Pete put down loads of bait and had plenty of pandoras, combers and small snappers. They also caught some nice European eels and the fish just kept on coming. They were snapped up three times with large fish and one felt like a big snapper (Appropriate name eh?). It went on five or six runs then finally bit through the nylon trace. See photo of Pete’s dad John with two eels. Myself and ‘Blisters Steve’ were joined by ‘Titanic Trish’ and ‘Costa Almeria Tours Jackie’ on a trip out with ‘Orca Steve’. We began by trolling for two hours without a take and so presume we have seen the last of the tuna? We also didn’t manage to hook any dorados (mahi mahi) that are being caught in numbers in the Villaricos area. I even tried depths as deep as 40 foot (ish) which is apparently the ideal depth for a hook up. We were however treated to sightings of dolphins and they played under our bow for a while. They were either babies or a small species, being only about three to four feet long. The girls were very excited about seeing them and it was a lucky encounter because they’ve not been seen so much since last year’s storms. We anchored over a few marks near the Repsol garage and caught a variety of the usual suspects including white bream, weavers, pandoras, bogues, pickerels and combers. The girls took a few of the bigger fish home for lunch whilst most (As usual) were returned to the sea.

football facts

Pele says Brazilians shouldn’t turn against Diego Costa for choosing to play for Spain instead of Brazil.

Juventus have scored first in 65% of their last 20 home games.

In their last 20 home games, 77% of the 30 goals scored by Juventus have come from forwards, 17% from midfielders and 7% from defenders. In their last 20 home games, 53% of the 15 goals conceded by Juventus have come from forwards, 33% from midfielders and 7% from defenders. Real Madrid have scored first in 70% of their last 20 away games.

Pele’s comments contrast those of Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who said the player “was turning his back to the dream of millions” of Brazilians.

The Atletico Madrid striker was born in Brazil but holds a Spanish passport. He had to choose between the two nations after Scolari picked him for upcoming friendlies www.mysanantonio.com

The Brazilian federation even threatened to ask authorities to strip Diego Costa of his Brazilian citizenship.

In their last 20 away games, 76% of the 38 goals scored by Real Madrid have come from forwards, 18% from midfielders and 5% from defenders.

Lady Lay

In their last 20 away games, 62% of the 21 goals conceded by Real Madrid have come from forwards, 19% from midfielders and 14% from defenders.

The football great on Monday said Brazilians “must respect his decision.” He added that Diego Costa “made the right choice” if indeed he thought he was not valued by Brazil in the past. Pele defended the player for sticking “to his point of view.”
