Class members all dresssed up in their finery. Members of Eleanor and Gilly’s Monday Afternoon Line Dance Class celebrated their Fifth Birthday recently at Bar Jack’s in Albox. And the ladies of the class certainly put on a show as they dressed up in their best finery to celebrate. The theme of the party this year was “ladies” and to that end, most of the class dressed as if it was “Ladies” Day at Ascot. Throughout the afternoon, all the dances performed included the name of a lady within the title of the music used to dance to. For example “Second Hand Rose” and “Pretty Belinda”. There was also an afternoon buffet tea based on a high tea theme, which included smoked salmon, cucumber sandwiches, and buttered scones. The class members took part in a fashion parade and F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) President Adele Wrigglesworth and Vice Secretary Pauline Marshall were invited along to adjudicate as to whom they thought was the best dressed lady of the afternoon. It was a difficult decision to make! Finally three ladies were awarded prizes of wine and chocolates. They were Pat Perrin, Chris Parkinson and Nita Hooper. In return for the judges hard work, the Line Dance Class presented them with 180€. The Line Dancers have always been stalwart supporters of F.A.C.E. and over the last five years have presented them with nearly 1,500€ The group has been based at Bar Jack’s for nearly all of the five years of its existence, after originally setting up in the now defunct Bar Rojo. When Bar Rojo closed, the Line Dance Class had the distinction of becoming the first ever group to use what was then the brand new function room. The original idea was that Eleanor and Gilly would organise a weekly social afternoon, using Line Dancing as a base. The idea has been popular with people from the Albox and Arboleas area who find it difficult, or do not like to go out during the evening. It’s an afternoon of Line Dancing and other social events and is just the place to meet friends and make friends. If you would like further F.A.C.E. President Adele Wrigglesworth, Class information on Eleanor and Gilly’s Organiser Gilly Elliott-Binns, Fashion Parade Line Dance Class, please contact Winners Nita Hooper, Pat Perrin, and Chris 950 439 003. British anger as Spain searches UK diplomatic bag at Gibraltar border

Spain accused of ‘serious infringement’ after opening bag belonging to a British diplomat travelling across the border

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com INHERITANCE TAX IN ANDALUCIA: THE 175,000 EURO: EXEMPTION FOR SPOUSE AND DESCENDENTS: If you are resident in Andalucía and have inherited less than 175,000 euro, you will pay no inheritance tax as long as you are a GROUP I heir (this is spouse, civil partners and all direct descendants including adopted children). The exemption as you can see contains three conditions: 1. You must be resident in Andalucia: If you are non resident your exempt amount would only be 16,000 euro. (consult a professional regarding who is considered resident for the purpose of inheritance tax) 2. The heir must be in Group I. 3. The heir must not receive more than 175,000 euro. In Spain tax is applied to what each heir receives. As long as each heir in group I receives less than 175000 no tax will be due. This is an all or nothing exemption. If you inherit one euro more than 175000 euro then you do not qualify and pay on everything but the first 16,000 euro. (Which is the exempt amount for GROUP I heirs if you do not qualify for the above). (if you are close to the exemption rate consult a professional regarding exact valuation of the estate as he will be able to establish it using benchmarks and will need to fine tune the value adding 3% for chattels and deducting deductable expenses) Example: A married couple resident in Mojacar have a jointly owned property worth 700,000 euro and a joint bank account worth 50,000 euro. If the husband passes away the estate will be worth 375000 euro. (half of the value of the house and half of the money in the bank account) This is a simplified version of the reality, because this amount would in reality suffer certain adjustments before being used). If the deceased husband had left his complete estate to his wife, then: As she is receiving over 375000 euro she does not qualify for the exemption and will need to pay tax on all but the first 16,000 euro: result her tax would be over 70000 euro. If this couple had three children also resident in Mojacar and the husband had left his estate to his three children and wife in four equal shares, then no inheritance tax would have been paid al each heir would have been entitled to the exemption of 175000 euro. Please also note an error in last weeks print. The Article stated that the brother had to pay 170,000 euros inheritance tax but this should have read 17,000 euros.

Spain was accused of a “serious infringement” after Guardia Civil officers opened and searched a British government diplomatic bag being transported across the border from Gibraltar. The breach of protocol is the latest in a series of provocative actions from Spanish authorities at the border and led to yet another complaint by the UK foreign office to its Spanish counterparts. “This is a serious infringement of the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” a spokesman from the FCO said. “Protocol concerning official correspondence and the diplomatic bag is governed by the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. There are long-established and internationallyaccepted Articles concerning official correspondence and the diplomatic bag to which the FCO adheres. We expect other parties to the Convention, including EU and NATO allies, to do the same,” the FCO continued. “We take very seriously any reported abuse of the protocol surrounding official correspondence and the diplomatic bag. We have asked the Spanish authorities to investigate what occurred and

take action to ensure it does not happen again. “As far as we are concerned there is no justification for this infringement of the UK’s rights under the Vienna Convention. Official correspondence and diplomatic bags are inviolable.” Last week the Foreign Office summoned Spain’s Ambassador to London to make a formal complaint after a Spanish research vessel entered British Gibraltar Territorial waters and ignoring warnings from the Royal Navy, remained there for 20 hours. The “illegal incursion” prompted calls for the Royal Navy to boost its presence to protector from “constant harassment” from Spain. Fabian Picardo, the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, also complained that Spanish authorities were now targeting pedestrians at the frontier, causing long delays for people crossing on foot. “We are now seeing people, elderly people, young children, standing in the cold shivering whilst the Spanish authorities create unnecessary politically manufactured queues asking people to turn out the contents of their pockets.” The summer was marked by lengthy traffic queues at the border as Spanish imposed stringent checks ostensibly aimed at preventing tobacco smuggling but widely seen as retaliation for Gibraltar’s creation of an artificial reef in its waters that put an end to illegal Spanish fishing. By Fiona Govan, Madrid www.telegraph.co.uk

Gibraltar is the only place in Europe with monkeys. Nobody really knows how the Rock’s cheeky Barbary macaques made it there; some claim they were brought over by the Moors or the British, others that they somehow crossed over from the Atlas mountains in neighbouring Morocco. Legend has it that if the apes ever leave the mountain, Gibraltar will cease to be British.

Gibraltarians earn on average €30,000 more a year than their Andalusian neighbours. The figure is €17,000 for Andalusians and €47,000 for Gibraltarians. According to the CIA World Factbook, Gibraltar also has a minute three percent unemployment rate compared to Spain’s mammoth 26.9 percent rate (Eurostat).

Operación Cuenta Atrás successfully stops a vehicle scam in Almería.

The scam, in which mileage readings were falsified, was conducted by salesmen of used vehicles with over 300,000 kilometres on the clock, who acquired most of the vehicles at low prices at auctions. These vehicles were less than 3 years old, so an ITV certificate was not required. In all it is estimated that as many as 1,000 people could have been affected by this scam. 24 people have been arrested for fraud, 42 bank accounts have been frozen, 27 vehicle outlets have been searched and 252 vehicles have been seized. teleprensa.es

The Junta discusses the possibility of financial aid for farmers affected by hail in El Ejido.

Jerónimo Pérez Parra, Secretario General de Agricultura y Alimentación de la Junta de Andalucía, accompanied by the Delegado Territorial de Agricultura, Pesca y Medio Ambiente, José Manuel Ortiz, met with representatives from Unicaja and Cajamar to discuss the possibility of aid for those farmers whose greenhouses were destroyed or damaged by the recent hailstorm. Final assessments have not yet been made, but at present the figure quoted for damaged property and crops is 70 hectares. teleprensa.es

46 schools participate in the exhibition ‘Cuidemos la Costa’

The Junta de Andalucía attaches particular importance to the integration of environmental and educational issues in order to promote a commitment to a change in perspective, habits and behaviours aimed at finding a more just society which is concerned about the quality of their environment. To facilitate this environmental perspective in schools, the Consejerías de Educación y de Medio Ambiente de la Junta de Andalucía in 1990 launched the Programa de Educación Ambiental ALDEA (Environmental Education Program VILLAGE), encompassing various educational programs. The program as a whole is held in thousands of schools across the province.

The Federación de ServiciosPúblicos (FSP) (Federation of Public Services) of the UGTAlmería demanded that the Chairman of the UrbaserRoquetas Company ‘meets the functions that you were appointed to by the workers.’ It is claimed that ‘since last June, when the collective agreement was signed, the chairman of the Company has not established within the stipulated 30 days, the joint committee, as required in Article 5 of the Convention. It is a Complex Carbohydrate food. Not all carbohydrates are equal as far as nutrition goes. Simple carbohydrates contain refined sugars that have no nutritional value and, generally, a high calorie count, such as sweetened desserts. On the other hand, complex carbohydrates provide your diet with nutritional fibre, vitamins and minerals from whole grains and starchy vegetables. The recommended daily allowance of carbohydrates is 130 grams for both men and women. One cup of cubed butternut squash contains more than 16 grams of complex carbohydrates. It is Low-Fat and Cholesterol-Free One cup of butternut squash, cut into cubes, has less than 0.15 grams of total fat, making it a healthy choice for a low fat diet. The zero cholesterol in butternut squash can help lower your risk of stroke and heart attack. High cholesterol is a major factor in heart disease caused by diet. Not only is butternut squash heart-healthy, it is low in calories with 63calories in 1 cup.

It is high in Beta-carotene and Vitamin C. The beta-carotene in butternut squash converts the pigments in the squash into vitamin A. It provides almost 750 micrograms of vitamin A to your diet, which is more than the recommended daily intake of 700 micrograms. Vitamin A is essential for healthy vision, immune system and skeletal system and may lower the risk of lung cancer, according to Harvard Medical School. One cup of butternut squash provides 30 milligrams of the 75 milligrams recommended daily allowance of vitamin C to your meals. Vitamin C helps prevent cataracts, helps

wounds heal and strengthens blood vessels. Rich in Fibre. One cup of cubed butternut squash has almost 3 grams of fibre, which helps curb your appetite and regulates blood sugar levels. Men and women require different amounts of fibre in their diets – men need about 38 grams daily, while women require about 25 grams. Beneficial fibre can also help lower your blood pressure and decrease stroke risk, according to the American Heart Association. Choosing your Squash. Select one that has no soft spots or splits in the rind and still has the stem. It should feel heavy, which means it is meaty inside. If it still has a green tinge on the skin, it is not quite ripe and won’t be as flavourful. Cooking and Serving Ideas. You can fry, bake, boil, steam, saute, puree or microwave this versatile vegetable. Or make a soup, either on its own, or add a few herbs, some roughly chopped cooked bacon, some dried mushrooms, whatever you fancy! Add cubed butternut squash to vegetable stew, casseroles and slow-cooker recipes. You can also mash it with butter and brown sugar for a wholesome side to your main entree, or bake it with apples, cinnamon and pecans. Or make it into a butternut squash pie for a fibre-rich and nutritious dessert option. Whatever you decide to do with it, take your biggest and sharpest knife to cut it up – carefully!

Dogs are Boring, Cats are Common? If that is your attitude, then check out this list of Top 10 Peculiar Pets. Perhaps you fancy a pet skunk, or maybe a cockroach? Believe it or not, there are many people who do call these unconventional creatures their pets.

In descending list order, here goes: 10. Capybara. Related to the guinea pig, this native South American is the largest rodent in the world. Fully grown, the capybara is on average 4 feet (1.2 meters) long and usually weighs more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms). I think NO! 9. Stick Insect. Popular with children for years, because of its unique appearance and simple care needs. These intriguing insects abound in the Campo, and can live for several years in the right conditions. They need tall enclosures, at least double the height of the insect, because they like to hang. They are omnivores and thrive on a diet of anything green, even lettuce. They don’t like being alone and need other stick insects for companionship. Their enclosures should be kept at room temperature and cleaned out weekly. They moult many times before they reach maturity and need enough room to literally climb out of their skin. OK – you can have one, but you can’t take it for walks. 8. Miniature Donkey. Shrek and Fiona might have accepted a donkey into their family in the movie, “Shrek,” but wasn’t that just a fairy tale? Not necessarily. The American Pet Products Association reports that more than 3 million people in the United States own equine animals, including miniature donkeys. Don’t let the name fool you: Miniature donkeys aren’t that small. They are about 3 feet tall (1.5 metres) and weigh between 200 and 350 pounds (90 and 158 kilograms) at maturity. Only for you if your neighbour are stone deaf – a donkey’s bray carries for over 1 kilometre, and a miniature donkey does not have a miniature bray! Also, they love the sound of their own voice, and will bray constantly, just because they can! 7. Hedgehogs. Few and far between, these useful little garden helpers are best off in the garden. If you encounter one in your garden, unless it is injured, leave it alone. Put out some cat food and a very shallow saucer of milk, if you are lucky it might stay.

6. Pygmy Goat.

Fine, if you have a fenced garden, and don’t mind them eating absolutely everything that is growing in it! Though for entertainment value, they are top of the list! It’s up to you, but think carefully!

TRUE OR FALSE

12 hour battle to free toy Villagers spent 12 hours trying to free a missing pregnant cat from a recycling bin - only to find it was a squeaky toy. The cat had escaped as it was being taken to a new home in Moelfre, on Anglesey, by an animal charity worker. Three days later, miaowing was heard from the clothes bin but rescuers were thwarted as the lock was broken. After the fire brigade and RSPCA’s attempts also failed, the recycling bin was loaded on to a truck and driven to a specialist engineering firm 20 miles away. There, steel saws were used to gain access and the miaowing prisoner was finally revealed. Kelvin Owen, who owns the engineering firm, said: “Once we got into the bin we heard the miaowing - it sounded just like a cat and we all started to carefully search the bags. “Then I found a bag of toys and picked out a toy. I said: “It couldn’t be this, could it?” As I held it it went “miaow, miaow”. Mystery solved!” Jasmine Hazlehurst, from animal charity Anglesey Pets, said: “I did feel embarrassed when they pulled out the stuffed cat. “People were laughing, it was a priceless moment. I’m not that familiar with Disney toys but I’m told it is Marie from the Aristocats. “She makes a miaowing sound that is very realistic when you touch her paw. My five-year-old daughter Naomi has been playing with her ever since.”

5 Potbellied Pig.

Great for turning the garden over. They can be housetrained, and are very intelligent, some say more so than a dog. However, they don’t retrieve sticks! Are you sure? The cute tiny piglet is going to grow into a stonking great pig, and they are very heavy! If you are certain, well, maybe? 4. Sugar Gliders. These are part of the possum family, and are quickly becoming one of America’s favourite peculiar pet species. They are native to Australia and get their name because of a special membrane that extends from the front leg to the hind leg, allowing them to glide from tree to tree. The average full-grown glider will weigh only about 3 ounces (85 grams) and reach around 7 inches (17 centimeters) in length. I think NO 3 Wallaby. If you can find one. But not really.

2. Skunk. NO!

1. Madagascar Hissing Cockroach

Absolutely Not! I know it doesn’t bite or sting, but no! What about a nice Burmese water python instead? They are very pretty. If you are intent on having a peculiar pet, then go to Animal Planet for ideas, and care tips.

SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013

MIRACLES...

After a spell in hospital I decided to take a daily walk around the estate in order to speed up my recovery and return to a certain degree of fitness. On my return journey I would pause at the top of the hill and gaze over the valley a while – resting on the iron railings. I recalled all of my friends who used to stream down the road to work various shifts in the main aluminium factory. Because of the conditions and the smoking habits only a few managed to enjoy the promise of a few years retirement.

TheVisi tation

I would look at every house and recall the names of men I had enjoyed a drink with remembering the days out at the race meeting. Even those I failed to get along with, looking back the quarrels and the arguments seemed to be rather trivial – I would include them in my brief prayer. The average couple were content bringing up their children, caring for grandparents and attending to the needs of the home. The car played a dominant role and a good hose down and hand wash was given priority at the weekend. Only a small minority attended church at the weekend or had any interest in the spiritual side of life. In my idle moments I often wondered why do miracles occur usually in caves or grottos – and what would happen if one should, out of the blue – against all odds take place on a drab housing estate? Having met someone, a very down to earth person who was privileged to witness a miracle – an event which turned science on it’s head and defied reason, I got to thinking…What would the reaction be if an angel appeared to a working mother with a message… in the middle of doing the washing up? ...and so the poem ‘The Visitation’ came to be...

Halfway through the dishes, Anne glanced towards the door, The plates slipped between her fingers, And shattered on the floor. Gazing down with a gentle smile, The object of her fright, By the cooker a Angel stood, Bathed in radiant light. Fear not, peace be with you, Though the visitation strange, It’s usually a cave or grotto, But they opted for a change. We need to reach down to the lowly, And listen to their plight, What better then to build a shrine, And bring them to the light. So heaven chose a working venue, A bleak place in the map, A working mum in a simple home,

In a fourth-floor storey flat. “But no one will believe me! They will say that I am mad !” Anne gazed at the radiant light, The angel’s face was sad. Blessed are they who have not seen, Beneath this humble roof, You will see a wondrous sign, Behold I leave you proof. The tiny fragments on the floor, This miracle relate, This broken piece of porcelain, Is now a perfect plate. Go in faith and spread the word, Blessings in his name, The ghostly image turned into Tongues of golden flame. Anne awoke as from a dream,

Confused and at a loss, For etched perfectly into the plate, Was a simple little cross. The vicar said it was the season, There’s a lot about of late, But they don’t usually go for kitchens, Or a trade mark on a plate.

A warning letter from the council, Quoted rules and regulations, Regarding pets, drugs, excessive noise, And dubious visitations.

Perhaps announcing at bingo, “I’m the millennium Bernadette” But all she said was “One again!” How closer can you get.

The official line was very clear, Publicity involving the Pope, With pilgrims creating chaos, And car parks unable to cope.

Anne tried to tell the children, An angel came to town, Then gave a shush, said “Dads asleep, And turn the telly down”.

The experiment doomed to failure, Hardly the place or time, Four flights of stairs, a wonky lift, Not appropriate for a shrine.

Her husband blamed the change of life, And confided to his mate, She’s stuck two lighted candles, In the kitchen by the plate.

Now Nanny’s plate holds special place, So many years ago, And a tiny cross the vital proof, That an angel said “Hello“.

Innovative Technology If you don’t want to be cold this winter then why not consider investing in clever low energy heating by Oekoswiss Made in Switzerland, these infrared heated glass panels have many advantages over conventional heating systems – not least of which is the low operating costs of between 4 and 11 cents an hour, depending on the size of the panel. Perfect for every room in the house – the panels are unobtrusive and can be fixed on walls and on ceilings – high or low – because infrared heat does not heat the air, it heats inanimate objects and warms everything in the room – no hot air rising to the ceiling whilst feet are frozen.

Turn Up The Heat!

Wonderful Warming Ideas For Your Home This Winter

SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013

17

Add candlelight… Supplement overhead lighting and tabletop lamps wi t h soft, flickering candlelight to create a relaxed, soothing atmosphere. Group candles and hurricane lamps together on a mantelpiece or side table and choose richly coloured glass containers to add an even warmer glow

Use rich colour…

Deep aubergine on the walls turns a ‘cold’ bedroom into a warm and welcoming place. Good lighting i s essential wi t h a rich palette. Try a mixture of lamps and overhead lighting to alter the mood easily.

Release soothing scents…

Create a warm welcome wi t h orange and geranium scented candles. Burning the candle for just half an hour will fill your room wi t h a wonderful fragrance, while the flickering light makes a room feel snug. Try cinnamon and cedar too, for warming winter scents.

Lay feel-good flooring…

A quality carpet or rug can transform a living room from cold and drab to wonderfully light and also snug. Pale colours are great if you want to make a room feel bigger and will tone wi t h almost any colour scheme. Choose a design that i s Scotchgarded so i t stays looking good for longer.

Warm up your ki tchen…

Adding a bold splash of colour to a ki tchen i s the easiest way to make i t beautiful rather than just functional. A run of richly coloured handmade tiles behind the work surface creates a stunning and practical feature. Aubergine looks great wi t h a wood or cream Shaker style ki tchen, but if you have whi te uni ts you could try a rich red or orange for a more contemporary look.

Buy colourful upholstery…

Neutral schemes can feel cold in winter so add an injection of hot colour. A brightly coloured upholstered armchair makes a great focal point or simply add a few new cushions in fiery shades

Keep out the draughts…

Thermal lined or interlined curtains will keep out cold winter air as well as helping to retain heat inside. For addi t ional opulence choose sumptuous velvets and thick linens.

Add natural warmth…

Keep a basket of cosy wool throws close to hand to snuggle up under on chillier evenings. It’s much more economical than turning up the central heating.

Snuggle up in bed…

Transform your bedroom wi t h a luxurious buttoned headboard covered in a plush velvet; add new bedlinen in gorgeous colours and sumptuous fabrics and you’ll never want to get out of bed again!

The Church of Santa Maria

19

MOJACAR

The Church of Santa Maria is a fortified church that was constructed in 1560 at the Plaza de Parterre by the Maestro Sebastian Segura. It was fortified because it was meant to be a refuge of the townspeople from attacks of pirates and Turkish corsairs. The walls measure more than one meter thick and on the façade there are many potted plants. The ground plan is rectangular and there is a bell tower on one side of the church, and the tower has a clock on its façade. Above the door there is a glass window. The inside of the church is painted white and there is a baptismal font beside the altar. Behind the altar is a beautiful modern fresco of Christ Rises. The church was declared in 1985 as a Site of Cultural Interest by the government. There is a small plaza in front of the church and there is a white marble statue called La Mujer Mohaquera, and this portrays a woman with a veil covering part of her face, dressed in a typical costume, and carrying a large jug of water on her head. The statue was made on Aug. 26, 1989. The statue also is a symbol of the town.

o t t s h e e dog shelter m o c t t i P d a Br

Dogs are being hung, strangled, starved, flung down wells, abandoned and abused. Puppies are being thrown away with the rubbish. Not in a caring, civilised society you might think, but this is Spain today! Some of the dogs being brought to LA MOJONERA PROTECTORA DE ANIMALES DE ROQUETAS DE MAR by the social police have suffered abuses and mistreatment. Their trauma and experiences are still vivid in their minds. They react with fear when faced with certain situations, when they recall bad memories. BRAD PITT is a case in point. He is a very handsome Podenco mix and came to the shelter with the marks of a string round his neck. Probably somebody tried to strangle him or they may have merely tied him up with string and left him alone to try and free himself. We witnessed a dog tied up on waste ground behind our house with string round his neck the other day but he did have a bowl of water. He was a beautiful black and white bull terrier and must have belonged to somebody close by. We kept an eye on him and made sure he was taken care of; otherwise we would have attended to him. He was taken away and we can only imagine he must have been in the way in the house at the time! He should surely have been a part of the family at all times. The problem with taking every dog off the streets is that many of them are owned by Spanish families that have chucked them out in the morning for them to fend for themselves until they take them in again at nights. Very often also, they are not chipped, so to take them too soon may deprive them of their home, however unsavoury it may be.

lay down on the floor and would not move. Finally, a professional trainer took over and gently put his hands under BRAD’s body and carefully lifted him up to a standing position. Then, always with gentle movements, he got him to walk with the leash. BRAD is now at a foster home and has lost a great deal of his fear. The Saturday morning volunteers dedicate a lot of their time to socialising dogs like BRAD. This is very important, to give the dogs a real chance of getting adopted as it is difficult to get a home for a traumatised dog. We must tell you of an extraordinary case of dog-napping. Nina, a caring English lady in Roquetas recently picked up an elderly dog with a red collar and took it to ALGAIDA, a local vet. He confirmed that the dog had no microchip, so the dog was taken to the local police. He was taken next day to the local shelter where they thought he was around twelve years old. A few days later the good news was that the owners of the dog who lived in Almerimar had claimed the dog and were overwhelmed to get him back. They said he was actually fourteen years old. It transpired that the dog was seen being abandoned by a young woman, who let him off his lead, and then ran off. As the dog had been in an enclosed garden in Almerimar it can only be assumed that he had been stolen from the garden and dumped in Roquetas. How incredibly cruel!

If you would like to help the shelter in any small way, Geoff at geoffalmeria@hotmail.com would be delighted to hear from you.

The horrible practice of hanging and strangling Galgos and Podencos in particular, is quite common among hunters who dispose of the dogs that are no longer any use to them at the end of the hunting season. Throwing these dogs down wells is not uncommon either. It took months for the volunteers at the shelter to get a leash round BRAD PITT’s neck, but then he

Wealth Management In The 21st Century The tax planning, investment and general wealth management landscape has changed considerably since the start of the 21st century. Savings interest rates are at historic lows. Inflation constantly erodes the value of capital and income. We have had the economic crisis and banking crisis. There is a loss of trust in banks. Higher taxes are being imposed. All this has brought renewed emphasis on wealth preservation, and an increasing understanding of the need for diversification within your portfolio and tax efficient investment structures. Many today are concerned with maintaining the value of their money over the long term. As governments in Europe struggle to reduce their debt, they are desperately seeking every opportunity to increase tax revenues. Their main target has been private capital, on which

they are imposing higher taxes on income and gains. Spain is no exception. Wealthy families are subject to inheritance/ succession taxes and wealth tax. What matters are after-tax returns, so your wealth management strategies require both investment expertise and tax expertise. At the same time, tax authorities are closing many exemptions and tax planning arrangements, attacking offshore tax havens and demanding higher levels of disclosure. Banking secrecy is fast being consigned to history. Today there is unprecedented political support for automatic exchange of information. Governments will receive much more information on income and assets held overseas. This will significantly help them trace tax evasion and recoup unpaid tax and

penalties. Wealth management advice is more important than ever before. A wealth manager will review your current financial planning and advise you on how to protect and grow your wealth; to legitimately mitigate the amount of tax that you pay and control when and where you pay it; to protect your investments from institutional failure and to ensure your wealth will be distributed on your death according to your wishes and with as little inheritance tax as possible. Your aim should be to have the peace of mind that comes from the certain knowledge that your financial affairs are in order, so you can enjoy your chosen lifestyle here in the Spain. Jamie’s mulled wine

This is dead simple to make and tastes like Christmas in a glass. It’s a lovely celebration of those traditional festive spices like cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. If you’ve got your own favourite spices, then feel free to add those to the pot too. Let everything cook away and warm up gently so the flavours have time to mingle with the wine. I like to leave my mulled wine ticking over on a really low heat and just ladle some into glasses as and when guests pop in.

Ingredients:

Serves 10 • 2 clementines • 1 lemon 20mins • 1 lime • 200 g caster sugar Super easy • 6 whole cloves • 1 stick cinnamon • 3 fresh bay leaves • 1 whole nutmeg, for grating • 1 vanilla pod, halved lengthways • 2 star anise • 2 bottles Chianti or other Italian red wine

Nutritional Information Amount per serving:

Christmas in a glass

25

“ Come the festive season, there’s nothing better than a spiced, warming glass of this mulled wine”

• Calories 186 9% • Carbs 20.6g 9% • Sugar 20.2g 22% • Fat 0.2g 0% • Saturates 0.0g 0% • Protein 0.5g 1%

Method Peel large sections of peel from your clementines, lemon and lime using a speed peeler. Put the sugar in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the pieces of peel and squeeze in the clementine juice. Add the cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaves and about 10 to 12 gratings of nutmeg. Throw in your halved vanilla pod and stir in just enough red wine to cover the sugar. Let this simmer until the sugar has completely dissolved into the red wine and then bring to the boil. Keep on a rolling boil for about 4 to 5 minutes, or until you’ve got a beautiful thick syrup. The reason I’m doing this first is to create a wonderful flavour base by really getting the sugar and spices to infuse and blend well with the wine. It’s important to do make a syrup base first because it needs to be quite hot, and if you do this with both bottles of wine in there you’ll burn off the alcohol. When your syrup is ready, turn the heat down to low and add your star anise and the rest of the wine. Gently heat the wine and after around 5 minutes, when it’s warm and delicious, ladle it into glasses and serve.

SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013

Technology is a merciless adversary – one tiny flicker of weakness, one miniscule chink in my armour of invincibility, and Technology, armed with the sword of uncertainty, springs to the offensive with a deadly attaque. My latest thrust and parry with Technology came about when I needed to buy tickets on-line. All was going fine and smooth until it came to paying for them. Barclaycard in hand, I typed in the required numbers exactly as they appeared on the card, and clicked Continue. Incorrect number the screen said, in red. Knowing that I’m not good with numbers, and might have mis-typed, I did it again - Incorrect number the screen repeated with a smirk. I fetched Pete, who declared the numbers to be exactly as they appeared on the card. We scratched our heads, and I began to lose my temper. With undisguised petulance I typed the numbers a third time, without the spaces, and jabbed Continue unnecessarily hard. Accepted, it said – Ha! A successful parry! That’ll teach it! I was wrong. With a sardonic sigh it announced that the ‘site has expired’, so I had to start all over again, right

viewpoint

from the beginning. I gritted my teeth, and with rising blood pressure punched in all the required information, including the un-spaced card numbers, and dared it to Continue. I was so concentrated on direct opposition that I was completely blindsided by its next move. It wanted the 4th, 5th and 6th letters of my secret password, the only thing standing between me and faceless cyber-villains. Having been told by the computer that this password was so important and so secret that I must hide it in a place so safe that even the combined efforts of the CIA, MI6 and Sherlock Holmes would be unable to locate it, it is not surprising that I couldn’t find it either! So I guessed. Incorrect Password it chuckled. I guessed again. It could scarcely contain its delight as it displayed Incorrect Password a second time. My third go was no more lucky; then the site made a tactical error – It asked sarcastically whether I had forgotten my password, and asked me condescendingly if I wanted to change my password. If I don’t know it, how can I change it? I put in a completely new one, and within seconds my order, my money and my new Oh So Secret password had been accepted. I can’t help wondering – if I can simply change my password, why bother to remember it? If I were a faceless cyber-villain, intent on raiding my details, couldn’t I pretend to have forgotten it, and invent a new one?

This’n That and Nothing in Particular I am constantly being asked how the heck I find things to write about each week, and where do the ideas come from. Well, actually I have only been asked once or twice, but it’s a fair question and I always answer in the same way: that the subject matter is all around us and it’s just a question of observing and remembering – or in my case writing things down on bits of paper that are strewn around my desk. Any subject is fair game; it could be a chance remark by someone within my hearing, a humorous event or an item in the news - everything is collected, collated and treated as a potential newspaper piece. Of course when it comes to reminiscing about past events, there is a seemingly endless supply of good stuff from which to choose. And look, I have got myself two paragraphs already. I have just been reading an interesting but scary article on why we should not microwave food. It seems that we have been nuking our innards for years now, because microwaving changes the molecular

structure of things which can then produce cancer inducing and other icky substances. Not that it will affect us too much personally because making our breakfast porridge was pretty much the full extent of our dealings with this recently unmasked dealer in death. Speaking of which, what is it in porridge that makes it set like concrete and have all the adhesive qualities of super glue? Even non-stick pans wave the white flag of surrender after boiling up a slew of morning oats, and if milk is used instead of water, then the result is a new and impossible to shift false bottom, which if prised off will take the Teflon coating with it. Need to re-render the walls of your house? Forget the ferreteria, just nip along to Kwik Save! Actually there have been other occasions when it has been convenient to use the microwave; for heating up the odd pie for instance and once when I forgot to prick a potato, the resulting explosion was heard in Morocco. Anyway, we are taking this warning seriously and like a Rastafarian diner in a Bermudian greasy spoon pointed out to the equally greasy proprietor many years ago, “Me dun eat no radio food man”. Even after all these years, weekends still seem somehow incomplete without those legendary BBC radio programmes

that many of us remember, particularly on rainy days and when there is nothing of much cop on the box. Such regulars as: Round the Horn; Life with the Lions; A Life of Bliss (featuring a young George Cole) and The Navy Lark to name but a few. And Sundays would never have been complete without Two Way Family Favourites and The Billy Cotton Band Show. There’s just so much Lady Gaga and Dizzee Rascal that an old timer can take, and wouldn’t it be nice if we could have the occasional radio drama or live entertainment show – something too that stimulates the imagination like Journey into Space. Who remembers that? I reckon every schoolboy and his dad in the country tuned in regularly on Monday nights to Operation Lunar or The Red Planet, and did you know that it was the last UK radio programme to attract a bigger audience than television. I bought the BBC tapes some years ago and in spite of my initial fears that it would now be terribly dated, I soon found that I was being drawn into the drama of it again. And hearing those familiar voices from the past, such as Andrew Faulds, Alfie Bass and David Jacobs - I was a science fiction mad schoolboy once again. We thought we would give a new Chinese restaurant a bash the other night and whilst many of them are much of a muchness, the

food was excellent. But what made it particularly interesting was the reaction of one of the waitresses to my shirt. See, I have this shirt that has a bamboo pattern and some Chinese characters on it; alright it may not be to everyone’s taste but I like it. Anyway, she kept staring at this shirt, and I wondered not for the first time, just what the Chinese writing said. She blushed up when I asked her, and declined to translate it for me. I couldn’t help but notice as we left that the staff were watching us with strange expressions and through the open kitchen door eyeing us threateningly, was Odd Job the chef toting an evil looking meat cleaver. I still like the shirt, but I shall remember not to wear it on any more Asian meal excursions or trips to the Grand Bazaar Chino if we run short of plastic clothes pegs.

Spreadsheet Sam had been burning the midnight oil. Not midnight oil from Rodriquez’s Mill, that is such bad quality it doesn’t burn, it just emits a foul smelling dense black smoke. Sam had completed the massaging of the Olive Mill’s books better than the nimble fingers of the most adroit Thai masseuse. On the strength of these accounts the Olivarera de Alqueria has a turnover equal to that of eBay and a profitability greater than the JPMorgan Chase Banking Group. Rodriquez felt rather proud as he viewed the Company’s accounts. He knew his business acumen would save the day. He knew he was shrewd despite being called a total idiot by anyone who has spent more than two minutes in his company. Spreadsheet Sam had to point out that the figures were in fact fictitious. To Rodriquez however they were in black and white and therefore must be true. Rodriquez’s part in this subterfuge involved making the Mill look less like a public convenience on the outskirts of Port Said and more like a modern efficient, processing facility. A tall order. He opted for camouflage and only painted those parts of the Mill that could be seen from the road. From a distance the buildings looked well maintained and inviting, the closer one gets however the more depressing and dilapidated they appeared. The investors would be steered to Rodriquez’s office, the only part of the plant that had money spent on it. The investors were from Nigeria. Rodriquez had answered one of those emails promising millions for investment. Liberal quantities of Remitroot Wine and Rum softened up the Nigerians prior to the tasting of the all important olive oil. Venta del Baron Extra Virgin Olive Oil had been decanted into Rodriquez’s own bottles. The investors were suitably impressed with the quality and the contracts duly signed. Rodriquez sold the mill for the equivalent of fifty million Alquerian Raros to be paid in Nigerian Nairas. Rodriquez forgot about Alqueria’s hyper-inflation. As the ink was drying on the contracts Rodriquez’s phone rang. The USA had lifted the ban on Remitroot and its associated products. The Alquerian Raro shot up in value especially against the Nigerian Naira. Rodriquez hurried to the bank as the Raro rose in value breaking all records for any currency. Spreadsheet Sam made himself scarce, stealing a bicycle he reached Murcia Airport before he realised the chain had fallen off. When the conversion from the Nigerian currency to the Raro was completed the horrible truth became apparent. Rodriquez had sold the Olive Mill, his birthright and the biggest employer in Alqueria for the equivalent of two Euros and fifty-three cents.

A Clanger

I didn’t realise, until a recently overheard conversation on a bus, how much a Formula 1 Grand Prix reminds me of The Clangers. Do you remember The Clangers? Strange little crocheted puppets that communicated through unintelligible whistles and seemed to be endlessly getting soup from a Soup Dragon. Viewers were generally completely baffled by the programme. Apparently, so were BBC executives .When they first saw it, those in the corridors of power at the BBC immediately insisted that all the swear words were removed from the programme. Swear words? They were whistling! You could be forgiven for not believing this but it’s true and it says an awful lot about what was going through the minds of those executives don’t you think? Next they’ll be telling us that Captain Pugwash wasn’t innocent fun. Back to the conversation; it was between, what appeared to be, a Formula 1 driver and another passenger. By now you’re probably way ahead of me and asking the question I should have asked myself-a multi millionaire racing driver...on a bus? Is that really likely? Embarrassingly enough, I didn’t even consider that possibility I listened as they drooled over things like, the deafening roar of the engines as cars flashed by like bullets, the screeching of the tyres, the air full of the smell of petrol, oil and burning rubber and I couldn’t help thinking, what’s the attraction? Then my thoughts began to take on a life of their own and wander off into their own little patch of nothingness, you know the way they sometimes do, and it happened. I realised that The Clangers and a passion for Formula 1 racing have something very important in common-they’re both a total mystery to me. Nevertheless, I couldn’t ignore the overheard conversation and slowly I too began to wonder just why Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button or, maybe even, Graham is married Jeremy Clarkson, was travelling on a bus. I didn’t have to wait long for my to Helen and has a answer. It was none of those people. The speaker was indeed a competitor daughter, Alice. He in the World Championships, but it was the Scalextric World Championships, lives part of the year which people seem to take very seriously-they have leader boards and battle near Albox, but works it out for the best times, using Lamborghini, Ferrari and various other Italian in Qatar, teaching. 790,000 years ago what is now magnetic north was the magnetic south. Convection from the huge molten ball of iron which sits in the centre of the earth helps determines magnetic north/south. This change or ‘flip’ happens every half million years or so, it’s called a Geomagnetic Reversal and one is overdue. When the magnetic poles flip; the strength of the earth’s magnetic field drops for years whilst everything rebalances. The magnetic field normally prevents dangerous space radiation reaching the planet so there’s a chance life on earth would be affected. The field has weakened15% since the 1800’s; at the poles in the last 15 years it’s dropped a further 10%. Animal migration patterns would be disrupted when the next flip occurs as they would move in the opposite direction. GPS satellites would fail and power grids may collapse, the ozone layer would thin. Scientists believe the flip is about to happen again. About 40,000 years ago during the last Ice age, the magnetic poles flipped in what is known as the Laschamp Event taking about 200 years to do so, in that time the magnetic field was just 10% the strength it is now which meant the earth’s atmosphere was largely unprotected and large amounts of radiation reached the earth. 200 years later it flipped back again. Australians were warned 30 years ago to wear extra sun factor and to avoid the sun’s rays when CFCs in the atmosphere had created a hole above them in the ozone layer. This could happen on a much larger scale with some areas less affected than others. Planet Mars is barren with its atmosphere boiled away into space. Theory has it that as Mars lost its magnetic field the increased solar radiation heated the planet up. Scientists here on earth are worried and last weekend

three satellites were launched to measure the gravitational field to try and assess what’s happening. Nicknamed Swarm the satellites look like giant rats as the sensitive detectors are located on a long thin tail so they’re not affected by the magnetism off the main body of the satellite. The magnetism in rocks and tidal movements also affect the north/south polarity and it’s hoped all factors can be mapped and a theory worked out. The position of the North Pole (and so by definition the South Pole) is also changing, for 20 years it was moving about 6 centimetres south east a year. Then in 2005 it changed course and it’s now heading towards Greenland at 20 cms a year. The North Pole’s moved by up to 55 degrees in our planets lifetime, once it sat between Iceland and Norway and another time in Hudson Bay Canada. This is called Pole Shift and when these changes happen slowly the change is unnoticeable. In the case of a Sudden Pole Shift, the Poles locations change quickly with earthquakes, volcanic events and tidal waves. Pole Shift describes the earth’s outer crust moving not the whole planet tilting differently on its axis. Rather like rubbing the tissue wrapped around a Christmas Satsuma. Albert Einstein supported the theory of Sudden Pole Shift; there are ancient writings that support this thinking. Mammoths in Siberia have been discovered frozen solid with clover still in their mouths. Sudden Pole Shift would have meant that these Mammoths were happily eating their meadow grasses when the earth’s crust suddenly slipped and they and the land they were on were transported hundreds or thousands of miles north where they froze to death. The film 2012 is based on a Sudden Pole Shift Event!

Backup and Synchronisation

Last time we discussed the virtues of data backup and synchronisation. Today, we will provide an example of how to run the program discussed last time and how to set up the synchronisation of the program that we discussed last week. Before you can consider synchronising 2 folders with the sister program “RealTimeSync”, you have to start the program “FreeFileSync”. Start the program called “FreeFileSync” and you will see a 2 pane (To and From) display. At the top is the name of the program, under that is a large button marked “Compare” and under that is the left-hand drop-down box. Use the left-hand drop-down box to select where you want to synchronise from and use the righthand dropdown box (which is to the right of it and looks identical) to select where the backup device is. When these 2 boxes have the locations of TO and FROM click on the large “Compare” button and just watch. The left hand window pane should have filled and the right hand window pane should be blank (first time only). Next click on the large “Synchronize” button. You now see everything from the FROM being copied to the TO. Here’s an example that might help. On my drive ‘C’ I have video clips extracted from a movie that I want a copy of, on drive ‘D’. So, using the left-hand dropdown box under where it says ‘Drag and Drop’ I click on the ‘Browse’ button. I see a normal box showing me where everything is, so I choose ‘C’ drive and press ‘OK’. Now for where it is to go. Do the same things – BUT with the right-hand box! Click on the Compare button. When the comparison is complete, click on the Synchronise button. In moments, it’s done! Now you are happy that you can now synchronise these 2 folders whenever you want the should now save this configuration. Go to the menu bar at the top of the window and click on Programs then click on SaveAs. Give it an easy to remember name! When you have done that go back to Programs then click on Save as batch job. Use the same memorable name as before. This file that has the extension ffs_batch is what you will use now. The program “RealTimeSync” is a small window that needs which folders to watch and a command line. I this example the I put “C:\” (no quote marks) next to the green cross. I then click on the green cross to get another empty box in which I type “D:\”. Now the program knows where to look to make the comparison. It now needs a list of tasks to perform. This information goes in the text box at the bottom of the window and, for this example, will read “C:\Program Files\FreeFileSync\FreeFileSync.exe” “C:\Program Files\FreeFileSync\Memorable Name.ffs_batch” Click on the “Start” Button and know that it will monitor any changes to the folders you have asked to be monitored and backup the changes quickly, accurately and safely. There will always be ‘Paid’ versions of all the programs that are free. These will invariably have more functions, bell and whistles. It is up to you choose whether you pay or not BUT always consider making a donation to the programs author just to let them know that their work has been appreciated. I look forward to seeing you at “Jacks Bar” on Friday’s between 12 and 4. Where problem diagnosis is free, 35 years experience is free, and the bill will be less! Send me an email or ring me – the number is at the bottom. See you soon. For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

JAGUARS - You Can’t Win Them All !

CALL 950 430 820 TO ARRANGE YOUR PRIZE Written by Eric Arnold

The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain got together again on Sunday 24th November, perfect weather for taking the Big Cat out on the road. Back to restaurant Los Almendros in Torrellano this time, the huge car park makes it easy to organise the Big Cats into an fabulous display. An impressive turnout this time with 23 Cars and 57 people for lunch. May I take this opportunity to thank all those that attended especially the new members and a special mention to Mark Davy who travelled all the way from Almeria, a round trip of 440 Km. While I am on the subject of “thanks”, a big thank you to Ian McMenemy for all his hard work in organising the event. And thank you to John Parkin for a fabulous job on the creation and management of our new dedicated web site - see www.jec-spain.es And I must not forget David Shea who looks after our “presence” on Facebook. As I said “You can’t win them all”, on this occasion Restaurant Los Almendros let us down badly. I am not going in to details but needless to say JEC Spain will not be returning to this establishment in the future. Hence we are looking for a new home, if any restaurant owner out there wants to get in touch and offer their facilities we would be delighted to hear from them. The main criteria to qualify for consideration is adequate parking for up to 40 cars, being optimistic for the future. Or if any reader can suggest a restaurant that they know that they think may be suitable, please get in touch. In order to be as fair as possible to members, we would prefer the location to be around the Alicante area but we will consider anything. The superb selection of Jaguars at this meeting, a collection that would make the pulse of any “petrol head” race. The line up also attracted a lot of admiration from other people visiting the restaurant. 3 fabulous E types, whereas at the other end of the scale we had a superb example of the new XK’R’ drop head and a new XKF. Completing the line up were XK8’s, XJ’s, XJS’s and a number of S Type’s. After the not so satisfactory meal, we moved most of the cars down to the back car park to show them off to their true potential. Our next meeting is will be at the end of January, exact date to be confirmed, something special this time “ A Country Cruise”. We will be visiting Restaurant La Torretta near the town of Elda. This is a return visit for the club as many members expressed a wish to return to this fabulous little eating establishment. After that, who knows. For next year we are planning a Magical Mystery Tour and a weekend away in Almeria to visit the “Hollywood” sets. When we find a new base we can sort out our future plans in more detail. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club is the largest of the worlds Jaguar Clubs, apart from joining in the fun at the meetings, full members also benefit from a glossy 132 page A4 monthly magazine, Jaguar spares department and a technical advice service second to none. If you live in Spain and own a Jaguar you should be a member of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. The JEC in Spain is organised by Eric Arnold, Chairman and Ian McMenemy, Events Manager. Eric can be contacted by email at jaguarspain@outlook.com or by phone on 609931647 or alternatively check out the JEC spain web site www.jec-spain.es Our Events Manager, Ian McMenemy can be contacted at McMenemy@JEC-events.com

You don’t appreciate this until you become a parent. Thankfully, Skoda realises this and its Roomster, which reminds me of a Pope mobile thanks to the styling at the rear, has bags of space (up to a cavernous 1,780 litres – quite something for a small MPV). Its seats have 20 configurations so that no matter what you’re transporting the optimum amount of room can be utilised. For instance, if bicycles are being carried then perhaps one of the rear seats might be removed but if rubbish is being taken to the tip then the whole lot can be taken out. Usually I have to make an exploratory trip to every vehicle I test before daring to show it our enormous tandem pushchair but I don’t bother with the Skoda. On lifting the large hatch it fits perfectly with room to spare. In fact there is almost enough room for the some shopping. But more about that later. Its also higher off the ground compared to a standard Roomster making it capable of tackling off-roading if required. What I love about Skodas is that they always feel well built and robust. The Roomster Scout is no different. Once behind the wheel you quickly forget its shape. “There’s so much light inside due to the particularly large rear windows,” my wife Caroline

Room is a necessity for families notes. They are larger than the square edged front ones, which remind me of those on an old Saab 900 as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. There’s a five speed manual gearbox but no engine stop/start and yet the 1.6litre diesel engine will return a very respectable 60mpg. Just as well because it has a demanding weekend ahead. On the Saturday we take it to the north of Hampshire to visit some art exhibitions and as ever time is imperative. Quickly I get used to the driving position, which is slightly higher than in a standard car making it good for overtaking and providing an added sense of security. I forget to put the child locks on the rear doors and as we are making good progress down the outside lane of the accident blighted M3 a red sign depicting the vehicle suddenly appears on the dashboard – Harriett has tried opening her door. Fortunately I’m able to travel from the outside to the inside lane fairly swiftly to park on the hard shoulder and rectify my mistake. Hot and flustered I am grateful for the air conditioning, which is certainly effective. The driver’s seat seems comfortable enough but extra padding in the lower lumbar region would be beneficial. I like the layout of the dash in this Scout version which is fairly simple and easy to navigate. The leather steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake give a welcome feeling of luxury. Generally it’s got enough oomph to hold its own but strong winds and hills can slow progress a little. In a part of Hampshire with which we are unfamiliar we spend some considerable time trying to find a supermarket but before long stumble across one and despite the pushchair in the boot, there is enough room to accommodate all our purchases, even if some have to go on the floor. way once again down the dreaded M3, reaching the capital by 1pm. During our trip I notice that there’s a bit of wind noise through the driver’s door but this is the only complaint. It’s fast and efficient and transports all my family in comfort. Parking is easy enough and the fact that we can travel with the tandem pushchair does make walking around London with our two girls much easier. After enjoying our day we return late at night and find the map reading lights to be particularly useful. Advanced motorist We always get confused when trying to head out Tim Saunders is the former Business of the capital but thankfully successfully retrace our and Motoring Editor of the Bournemouth steps from Southwark. We decide to head home Daily Echo. His regular test reports appear in numerous newspapers, along the A3. Now, this is a very poorly lit main road indeed and the Roomster’s headlights could magazines and websites throughout the UK, Ireland & Gibraltar - and now here certainly be stronger although full beam is effective in Spain! For more information contact but not appreciated by oncoming motorists. Tim on: timasaunders@tiscali.co.uk We return home for midnight with our two girls flat out in the rear. The Roomster scores 950 479 502 highly for its versatility and ruggedness and certainly makes a very wise buy. After over seven years of sterling service, Mike and Jenny Hickman stood down from their positions as Chairman and Treasurer of the Roquetas De Mar branch of The Royal British Legion, at its annual general meeting held at The Lodge last Tuesday. In recognition of their tireless efforts and dedication, the acting Vice-Chairman of the branch, Mike Ellis, presented them both with a poppy themed card featuring photographs of some of the numerous social events and outings they had organised during their time in office. And, following a collection amongst members and friends of the branch, they were also presented with a voucher for a local gift emporium, as a gesture of thanks. This was confirmed with a rousing round of applause. The AGM was the last official function of the Roquetas branch. It is proposed that in future, the members in Roquetas will be operate as a sub-branch of the Royal British Legion Branch, Mojacar. This decision is expected to be ratified shortly by head office of the RBL, and confirmed by a vote at the AGM of the adoptive branch. Subject to this, the members of the new sub-branch will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month for a social event at The Lodge. Anyone interested in the work of the Royal British Legion is welcome to come along. In addition, the Poppy Appeal in the Roquetas area will continue to be organised by Barry Thomas.
