Coachtrips support Alzheimer’s When all the monies collected by the wonderful team of Coachtrips Couriers and the fund raising team of AFA (Alzheimer’s Association)from the Benidorm Christmas Holiday draw, (won by Rita Monaghan), David and Shauna were able to give Executive Fund Raiser Jennie Mutter and Judy Ferris from Torrevieja’s Alzheimer’s Association the magnificent sum of €2475. This money is particularly welcome this year as many of the previous grants and NGO support has either been dramatically reduced or ceased altogether. This, at a time when the need for the help and care for patients suffering from dementia and their families is becoming at crisis level. The Torrevieja two clinics cover the Puma 22 health area and also are often asked to help with English speaking families living in Spanish areas where there is no such help. We have been so very lucky this year with the terrific support from clubs. bars, drama groups and individual donations we want to thank you all so very sincerely as without this

ongoing help we could not do what we do for those who need our care so very much. As an organisation we are not able to operate with just volunteers as many charities do, due to the condition and situation of our patients ( albeit we are very grateful for the help given to us by the volunteers we do have, both in the shop and at our Centres). We employ fifteen fully qualified staff who provide the therapies and care for our patients, which does cost a lot of money, but our patients not only need this professional help, but they deserve it! How can you help? Any show or event that you come across or see advertised, then that is the one to choose to support. Thank you again Coachtrips, especially for your next offer ~ a 10 day all inclusive cruise next October,~ again tickets available for just 1€, from AFA Shop, any Coachtrips excursions or from Jennie Mutter on 626891912 See Coachtrips web site and/or their regular entry in the local papers for more information on this cruise.

Tlf: +34 958 003 391 Mob: +34 606 281 865
Family run estate agency dedicated to finding your dream home in the sun! Established since 2003 SH788 - Nr Arboleas - 155,000€
On Saturday 7th December MACS held their annual Christmas party at Mirafores Camping in Los Gallardos. Organised by Maggie Lake and the fundraising team. It was a resounding success. Congratulations to the staff of Mirafiores who served up a lovely three course meal with great efficiency. Following the food service, Elaine Kay Brown founder and president of Macs started the evening with a short but uplifting speech thanking everybody for their support. Elaine announced that on the 13th December 2013 she will undertake her stem cell transplant and by March of next year will be ready to go forward in the hope of opening more shops in the near future. Elaine also thanked all the volunteers from administration, telephone holders for the helpline, shop volunteers, to all who volunteer to deliver equipment to patients and the fundraising teams. Elaine said it was not so much about the money but helping as
many patients as possible. It is impossible not to be motivated by her enthusiasm and courage, she is an inspiration to everybody around her. ‘ROUGH JUSTICE’, Tony Justice on vocals and Dennis Danzelman on guitar, entertained the crowd with their first set, a mixture of blues and soft rock, whilst some of the volunteers offered raffle tickets for the wonderful donated prizes. The raffle raised a very healthy €374.10 for the charity. A short but entertaining auction was instigated by Peter Marriot For a Christmas hamper and raised a further €60.00. Total funds raised €965.60 So a big thank you for the generous donations are in order. The ever professional resident DJ and presenter at Miraflores, John Lodge, got the crowd dancing before introducing ‘Rough Justice’ back on stage, who upped the tempo and kept the crowd on their feet. All in all a great night that will be remembered

DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY by Mike Walsh
La Zenia’s Orihuela Costa Resort recently hosted one of the season’s most looked forward social events. Flamenco artiste, Raquel Peña’s Sevillana dancers and guests were in full flowing dress at their November 30 Sevillana Gala. Entertained by local flamenco stars Daniel Isis and Elvira Samper, notable guests included Hans Jurgen-Jung, the wellknown piano-entertainer. The popular musician, with his wife Maribelle, was also celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary. A real posh-frock social occasion, Raquel Peña’s said the event underscored the social side of the Flamenco for All Association. Contact Raquel at 630 689 431 or email raquelpenya@hotmail.com
General China bans banks from handling Bitcoin trade The Bitcoin is a virtual currency. The ban came in a notice issued by the People’s Bank of China, financial watchdogs and the nation’s IT ministry. Bitcoins were a “virtual good”, had no legal status and should not be used as a currency, it said. The decision comes after bitcoins’ rapid rise in value was called a “bubble” by Alan Greenspan, former US Federal Reserve chairman. The ban was imposed because bitcoins were not backed by any nation or central authority, said the notice. It added that it was planning to step up its efforts to curb the use of bitcoins to launder cash. Individuals were still free to trade in bitcoins but should be aware of the risks involved, said the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), adding that it planned to formalise the regulation of exchanges that dealt in the digital cash. Experts told Reuters the PBOC was moved to make its decision because Chinese nationals were heavily involved in trading the virtual currency. Many believe this is because it helps them avoid controls on trade in the yuan. The value of bitcoins traded on Chinese exchanges fell after the announcement was made. Interest in the virtual currency has seen its value soar in recent weeks; on 28 November, the value of one bitcoin surpassed $1,000 for the first time. The swift rise in value led Mr Greenspan to say the exchange rate for the virtual currency was “unsustainably high” in an interview with Bloomberg. “It’s a bubble”, he said, going on to question the financial value people had pinned on bitcoins. “You have to really stretch your imagination to infer what the intrinsic value of Bitcoin is,” he said. “I haven’t
been able to do it. Maybe somebody else can.”
How Bitcoin works
Bitcoin is often referred to as a new kind of currency, but it may be best to think of its units being virtual tokens rather than physical coins or notes. However, like all currencies its value is determined by how much people are willing to exchange it for. To process Bitcoin transactions, a procedure called “mining” must take place, which involves a computer solving a difficult mathematical problem with a 64-digit solution. For each problem solved, one block of bitcoins is processed. In addition the miner is rewarded with new bitcoins. This provides an incentive for people to provide computer processing power to solve the problems. To compensate for the growing power of computer chips, the difficulty of the puzzles is adjusted to ensure a steady stream of about 3,600 new bitcoins a day. There are currently about 11 million bitcoins in existence. To receive a bitcoin a user must have a Bitcoin address - a string of 27-34 letters and numbers - which acts as a kind of virtual postbox to and from which the bitcoins are sent. Since there is no registry of these addresses, people can use them to protect their anonymity when making a transaction. These addresses are in turn stored in Bitcoin wallets which are used to manage savings. They operate like privately run bank accounts - with the proviso that if the data is lost, so are the bitcoins owned. bbc news
Edjucation, Edukashin, Educayshn The “world league tables” of maths, science and reading show the UK lagging behind Asian countries, and many in Europe. The success of the Asian countries is put down by many media sources as being achieved through ‘pushy parents and even pushier teachers.’ Sweden’s Friskola, the model upon which England’s free schools are based, did not come out well, in contrast to the Asian systems, which push every child to do well. However, it is pointed out in the Independent that ‘from better teachertraining to a tougher curriculum, Michael Gove’s shake-up of Britain’s schools has much to recommend it, but it has not yet had much time to take effect.’ Education adviser Sir Michael Barber
writing in the Daily Telegraph warns that the best school systems are in Pacific Asia and that Britain must match their performance - and those of Germany and Poland - in offering both vocational and academic courses. Or else, he says “our young people will find it ever harder to succeed in an increasingly global jobs market”. On the other hand China analyst Ben Chu warns against assuming the Chinese system is best, saying that the results cover only Shanghai, where education spending is higher than most areas, and results do not cover the children of migrant workers who attend substandard schools. bbc news
Wife unknowingly ‘live-tweets’ husband’s fatal crash A Washington state woman took to Twitter to confirm her husband’s death in a car accident An American woman live-tweeted reports of a fatal car crash, only to find out her husband had been killed in the accident, according to US media. Caran Johnson, of Washington State, was reportedly listening to a police scanner when she learned of the accident. Her tweets became frantic as she realised her husband took that route home, according to the Seattle Times. “It’s him. He died,” she later reportedly tweeted. Washington state authorities confirmed to US media that 47-year-old Craig Johnson had died in Wednesday’s
accident. His Hyundai Elantra crossed into the other lane on the I-205 highway and struck a Toyota pickup truck. A female driver of the Toyota reportedly suffered serious injuries. According to reports of Ms Johnson’s Twitter feed, @ScanCouver, her husband suffered from epilepsy and had been feeling faint when he left work early on Wednesday afternoon. “I’m trying not to panic, but my husband left work early and he drives [I-205] to get home. He’s not answering his phone,” she wrote in tweets captured by Portland-based KGW News. bbc news

The Magic of Father Christmas
Who will ever forget the feeling of anticipation and apprehension when the bell announced the visit of Father Christmas from the other side of the closed door?
In its unique Isabelline Gothic architectural composition, the ‘House of Shells‘ gains its name from the distinct pattern of around 400 ornamental stone scallop shells that cover its facade. Now home to the city of Salamanca’s public library on Calle Compañía, this predominantly Gothic art style, also exuding Renaissance and Moorish elements, was built during the 15th century. The civil building was originally the palace of Rodrigo Maldonado, who was a knight of the Santiago Order. The signifiying shells of the building are the emblem of this Order. The building has undergone a number of alterations after cracks began to appear on it during the 18th century, and its restored courtyard can still be accessed and enjoyed by walking through the library. Containing six levels, all centered around the original cloister, the building adorns a double gallery of arcades, embellished with lions, pillars, Italian sculpted columns and a coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs, and also one of the Maldonado family at its entrance. Casa de las Conchas Parsons is a writer and continues to capture the avidCandice Spain and Spanish culture lover attention of traveller’s, from Melbourne, Australia. ‘Like’ my and stands out to anyone Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ who passes through pandemicrhapsody and follow me on the historical quarter of Twitter @MiLlamoCandi Salamanca.
He just stood there, smiling at everyone and waving his arm. There were no ho, ho, ho’s or cries of ‘Merry Christmas’ and the bolder children ran towards him and the others followed suit. That entrance made a great impression on me and years later when I donned the famous beard and red garments I adopted the same approach. Once when seated on a throne in a supermarket a handicapped boy spotted me, ran in front of the queue, clutched me around the waist and said “Father Christmas” Ignoring the smear on the precious smock from his runny nose I made a fuss of him. Another time a harassed mother tried to lure her bunch of children away because there happened to be a photographer on hand. I called out to them and gave the little one a free present, much to the annoyance of the manager. Also an old lady with a child whispered “Be careful what you say, her mother died a few weeks ago.” Yes there have been the occasional incidents of pulled beard, the cynical child, even the odd kick, but the experience of playing the famous role has
been very rewarding. Sadly we seem to be moving away from the feast of Christmas especially amongst the modern teenagers who look forward to a binge and it is ironic that only a vast army of young children year after year capture and retain the real image. Their anticipation and enthusiasm seeps down or up as the case may be, to the parents and they in turn get caught up in the real celebration. Sadly there is already an explosion in the supermarkets and the shops and in the adverts in the news sheets and on the television. Except for the churches the crib has been made redundant simply in case of giving offence and ‘feast’ has been changed to ‘festival’ but once again the real meaning, thanks to the children, is ‘Seeping, creeping and never sleeping,’ as the great day draws near. The key to enter into the magical kingdom will be found when you hold the hand of a little child on the ‘Eve of Christmas Day.’ May I wish you all a Happy Christmas. By Jack Brennan RIP

The PP claims that the Albox Mayor has imposed unreasonable working conditions on his staff.
Juan Pedro Pérez Quiles is of the opinion that the ERE was no more than a ‘ruse’ by Rogelio Mena for ‘breaking the law and imposing a change in working conditions on the workforce, with the sole purpose of pretending to do something while doing nothing.’ The ERE has finally has resulted in the dismissal of six workers who did not yield to the threats of the Mayor.’ he concluded.
The Ayuntamiento de Pechina has been awarded a special mention for its collaboration with the social work done by the Asociación de Personas con Discapacidad “El Saliente”, whose objectives are to achieve full social and labour integration. An organisation that used explosives to steal from ATMs in Almería has been dismantled The Guardia Civil, under operation ‘Orbit’ has arrested 6 Romanian people (5 in Murcia and 1 in Zaragoza) suspected of at least 18 thefts from ATMs in Valladolid, Zaragoza, Murcia and Almería. They are charged with membership of a criminal organisation, aggravated theft and damage with explosives. Working by night they would introduced an explosive gas mixture through the slots of ATMs, causing them to explode so that they could appropriate the money contained within. Working as a group of 3 or 4 people in coordination - counter-surveillance to detect possible police presence, support vehicle etc. - they selected banks in small towns which had multiple escape routes. The group is known to have committed at least 18 such crimes, the last one being in Torre Pacheco. It was here that the police set up surveillance, and managed to apprehend the gang. The gang have also committed similar robberies, using the same methods, in Central European countries. teleprensa.es

The Ultimate Guide to Winter Hair Care Ah, the ravages of winter and the toll it takes on our hair! LongLocks’ Ultimate Guide to
Winter Hair Care provides easy, common sense techniques to ensure your hair stays happy and healthy throughout the cold weather months. Follow the tips below to ensure your hair stays beautiful and healthy despite the cold, dry air and other problems winter can bring!
1. Condition, condition, condition! Dry
heat and cold weather sap hair of moisture. Because dry hair breaks easily, the most important thing you can do during the cold months is to deep condition regularly and use a more intensive daily conditioner.
2.
Avoid using heated appliances as much as possible. Using a blow dryer, curling iron or flat iron dries hair out even more in winter.
5. Cover up! If you are going to be 3. Avoid chemicals. Don’t perm or use outside, especially in extreme temperatures
peroxide-laden color in winter. Try having lowlights or highlights added to just a few strands of hair to give you that extra glow, or try using a no peroxide hair color or a low-peroxide color. Check out the LongLocks Hair Care Cookbook for free natural hair color recipes you can make yourself!
4.
Don’t clarify too often. At this time of year it’s best to avoid products that build up in your hair rather than have to remove them. If your hair is sensitive to the effects of silicone build-up, now is the time to avoid products with silicone derivatives (look for ingredients with the suffix “cone”). While the initial effect of silicone is one of smoothing

As wonderful as using a clarifying shampoo or rinse is at removing hair product buildup, most tend to remove the protective oils from the hair shaft... oils that are very much needed to protect hair during the harsh, cold months. It’s important that when you do clarify in winter to be sure to use a gentle clarifying shampoo.

Remember that your hair can be more dry and brittle in winter, and thus be much more delicate. Try to avoid over-brushing your hair, Grandma wasn’t right about everything. Comb hair gently with a widetooth comb (my personal fav is the Mebco Shower Detangler, which I use all the time, whether my hair is wet or dry... I’d be lost without it) a least a couple times a day to prevent tangles and be sure to follow the Ultimate Guide to Removing Knots to learn how to safely remove any hair tangles that

Keeping hair conditioned will help to prevent static electricity. If you find your hair is flyaway in winter despite conditioning, an anti-static spray specially formulated to control static in your hair. In a pinch, you can even use a dryer sheet on your hair, or give your hairbrush a light spray of an anti-static product like Static Guard. It’s important to keep all your fuzzy sweaters and other winter clothes “conditioned” too. Using fabric softener on your clothes, especially garments you put on over your head, will help to reduce static electricity in your hair.
9. Avoid excessively hot water when you wash your hair.
Hot water is drying to hair. Rinse in tepid or even cold water for smooth, shiny hair all year ‘round!

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Q. I am resident in the U.K. In Spain I own a villa in San Juan de los Terreros (Andalucía) worth aprox. 250,000 euro and a small bank account. In the u.k. I have assets worth aprox. 700,000 (seven hundred thousand) euro. I have two daughters. One lives in Mojacar (Andalucia ) with her daughter and the other lives in London and has no children. When I purchased the property in Spain I made a simple Spanish will leaving my Spanish estate to my two daughters in equal shares. What inheritance tax will my daughters have to pay in Spain?
A. Residents in Andalucia who are in Group I (spouse and direct descendents) do not pay inheritance tax as longs as they receive less than 175000 (one hundred and seventy five thousand) euro each. Non-residents in group I pay on everything but the first 16,000 (sixteen thousand) euro received. If you leave things as they are, your daughter that lives in London will have to pay considerable inheritance tax in Spain and this is unnecessary. With this in mind, I recommend you change your will and leave the Spanish assets to your daughter and granddaughter that are resident in Spain and compensate your other daughter with extra assets in the u.k. As they will each be inheriting less than 175000 (one hundred and seventy five thousand) euro no inheritance tax will be due. I also recommend that If your granddaughter in Spain is a minor, you name your daughter in Spain executor with faculty to sell in case she needs to dispose of the inherited property before her daughter (your granddaughter) becomes of age. The content of a will can make a very big difference to the expenses and complexity of probate for your heirs. After looking into the options you may find that a simple mirrored will is the best thing for you, but this is not always the case. WE have a lot of experience in dealing with complex and/or expensive inheritance situations due to the non-existence of a Spanish will or wrongly written ones. Good advice when making a will is inexpensive and can save a lot of expenses and hassle.

SOLTIMES DECEMBER 2013
Decorating the tree You’ve chosen your perfect Christmas tree, but now what? Here are some ideas for setting up your tree, lighting it, keeping it fresh, and decorating it.
Keep Your Tree Fresh and Green Cut the stump of the tree with a fresh cut and set it in water immediately. A fresh-cut tree will absorb several quarts of water right from the start. So it’s important to check and refill the water level several times a day for the first week. You can cut down on frequency later. Be sure to place you Christmas tree in a stand that has a large water reservoir and keep it filled.
Putting Lights and Decorations on the Tree When decorating your Christmas tree, put lights on first, then garlands, then the ornaments.
Work From the Inside Out Start arranging Christmas tree lights on the branches near the base of the tree. Weave strings of lights along the branches “inside,” then move to the outer edges of the branches.
Placement of Ornaments Don’t hang all your ornament on the tips of the branches. Place ornaments and other decorations ‘inside’ your tree to add depth and interest.
Basic Ornaments for Fill Start by arranging the “filler ornaments” evenly spaced around the tree. This would include basic solid colour balls, available in a wide range of colours to easily coordinate and enhance your decorating scheme. You’ll need about 20 “filler ornaments” for every 2 feet of Christmas tree.
Special Ornaments Mix one-of-a-kind special ornaments between the basic ornaments. Plan to use at least 10 special themed ornaments for every 2 feet of tree. As your collection grows, put the special ornaments closer together.
Add A Personal Touch Even ordinary glass balls can be dressed up with ribbons, bows, or glitter to make them one-of-a-kind.
Ribbons and Bows A simple coloured Christmas tree ornament will look dressed up with a pretty bow of satin, velvet, grosgrain or sheer ribbon. Or tie a bow of raffia on the top of decorations. Use a touch of glue to secure the bow to the ornament.
More puppies at the Dog Shelter
Use What You Already Have You don’t have to use traditional ornaments on the tree. Look around the house for doll house furniture, tiny teddy bears, clothes for dolls, seed pods with ribbon loops. Using wire, cord or ribbon, attach the items to the branches of your Christmas tree. Tie everything together with a garland that unifies your theme.
Encrusted With Jewels Collect beads or crystals from vintage jewellery or craft stores and decorate a plain tree ornament.
Get the Children Involved Plan a project day for your children. Purchase wooden cutouts, ribbon, glue, glitter, cording, coloured paper and rubber stamps. Let your children create their own decorations and hang the pieces with other ornaments… …or decorate a whole small tree and place it in the child’s room. Be sure to put the date on the ornaments you’ll want to keep from year to year.
Make Your Own Garland Use floral vines, satin or velvet ribbon, popcorn and cranberries, or decorative cording to create an effective but simple garland. Collect small pine cones or seed pods and string them together!
sol times would like to wish all of our readers and local businesses a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New year

ASSSA - your private health insurer in Spain CUSTOMER SERVICE OFFICE NOW OPEN IN ROQUESTAS DEL MAR
Currently, many European citizens are experiencing changes which are bringing the effects of the crisis in Spain much closer to home. Some of you may be losing your entitlement to a SIP card while others, who already have private insurance, are finding out that their insurance company has been bought out by another insurance group. This has imposed limitations on their level of service or even on their quality of cover. Many have since discovered that they will no longer be able to visit the private doctor of their choice because the new company does not have a contract with them any more. Are you in either situation? Would you consider a reasonably priced private health insurance with ASSSA so that you can visit local, English speaking doctors in Spain? Are you privately insured, but dissatisfied: premium increases; no customer service in your language; your insurance company has radically reduced and changed their services? ASSSA offers you impartial advice and tailor-made solutions with special offers available and special conditions for those transferring in from another private insurer. Personal advice and support even after signing your contract? With our insurance company, this comes as a matter of course. ASSSA has, for over 75 years, offered its customers in Spain excellent private health insurance at an affordable price. For the last 20 Years we have specialized in meeting the private health insurance demands of our European fellow citizens along the Costa. After joining ASSSA you are allocated a personal contact that speaks your language and assists with any questions that you may have. Your personal contact will deal directly with you for medical assistance, offering her personal empathy, help and support. Doctors and Hospitals. We offer our customers an extensive directory of private clinics, GP´s and Specialists working from some of the best private healthcare hospitals. UK Taxman Targets Rental Income As tax authorities everywhere look to increase tax revenue, rental income is coming under closer scrutiny. If you own and rent out property you need to be sure that you are paying tax correctly. In the UK, HM Revenue & Customs launched a “Let Property Campaign” to encourage landlords to regularise their position. It is open to UK residents and covers holiday lettings, including properties owned abroad. A press release from HMRC warned: “For those that fail to come forward, higher penalties - or even criminal prosecution could follow.”With increasing exchange of information between countries, you can expect the UK authorities to find out about Spain property and vice versa. The UK and Spanish authorities can help each other collect
tax. What are your tax obligations if you are a UK resident owning property in Spain? As a UK taxpayer, you need to declare the rent on your annual UK tax return. Any gains on sale need to be declared and taxed there. Overseas property must be declared as part of your estate for UK inheritance tax purposes. In Spain, rental income from the property owned by nonresidents is taxed at 24.75%. If the property is unlet, a notional income is deemed to arise and tax due. When you sell the property you will pay tax on the capital gain at rates of between 21% and 27%. The net equity value of the property is currently liable to wealth tax if valued over the individual allowance. It is subject to succession tax, which can be expensive for non-

The age at which you sign your contract is always used as the basis on which to calculate your premiums, i.e. the premium does not increase due to increased age. In addition, ASSSA provides protection against policy cancellation from the first day of insurance. Contracts with ASSSA are of course, in your native language as transparency is important to us. By Chris McCann, Partner, Blevins Franks residents. Spain and the UK apply their own tax rules so the taxable amount is different in each country. You can offset the Spanish tax paid against the UK liability to avoid double taxation. If the UK tax is higher, further tax is due in the UK. You will have similar tax considerations if you are resident in Spain and own UK property. Tax planning involving two countries is complicated. Seek professional advice from an adviser who specialises in both Spanish and UK taxation and how the two interact. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. DRIVING OVER LEMONS
BY CHRIS STEWART
www.soltimes.com
SOLTIMES DECEMBER 2013
Driving Over Lemons by Chris Stewart. Dark shadows clouded my dreams of the sunny farm bright with geraniums and orange blossom. A valley teeming with murderous snakes guarding the entrance to a place of stones and scorpions. Most of us can empathise with Chris and Ana for deciding to move to an idyllic but challenging life in the mountains in Andalucia. Isn’t it everyone’s dream perhaps? Or perhaps that should read nightmare. Chris found his paradise early on in his house-hunting days. La Herradura would have been his first choice but he was discouraged from purchasing it because of complications in multiple owners not wishing to sell. His second choice was El Valero set amongst orange and lemon trees, olives and blossoming almonds. What could be more Spanish or delightful to the eye? A mountain farm, just what he desired. My head was whirling with excitement; wild ideas and dreams pouring in. Once the excitement levelled, he then realised why Pedro Romero was so keen to sell- a dam was going to be built across the gorge and flood the valley. In simple terms it meant that paradise would be flooded. Paradise submerged is what he calls it. The nightmare begins right here. Ana came to inspect the property and wasn’t particularly impressed and handed Chris a list of all the repairs needed before the house could become their home. Romero and his wife were still living at the farm and there was tension in the air: A thick silence ensued. I felt like a dead
t p e sia a e C h lmer in A
pig in a tea-room. The Stewarts returned to the UK and the intention was to move within 9 months but like an overexcited child, Chris decided after 6 months to return, wanting to learn as much as he could about running the farm before Pedro finally moved out for good. He forges a long-lasting friendship with one of his neighbours, Domingo and his parents. Domingo was an exceptional character showing an endless knowledge of the land and farming. He was wise as well as practically minded. When he was around, things that appeared impossible got done as if by magic. The move to Spain seemed an anti climax as they stared morosely through the pathetic little wedges of window resembling refugees forced to leave a beloved homeland. He soon becomes disillusioned when he discovers rumours that Pedro Romero has taken advantage of his innocence and good nature by stealing from the farm. The Matanzas or pig-killing is a winter tradition with everyone getting involved in one way or another. The men had to fortify themselves with anis or brandy, as much alcohol coursing around the system as was possible. A horrible business with the same mix of repulsion and excitement as bullfighting. Graphic details convey the horror of the occasion. Chris Stewart introduced the modern art of sheep-shearing to farmers who still sheared by hand. He told one of the shepherds that he had shorn 150,000 sheep without having to tie one up! The local farmers were sceptical but Chris was an attraction and a good crowd had gathered to watch this event. Buying sheep was important to Chris but Ana had a few reservations. No groom preparing a nuptial chamber for the arrival of his bride could have taken more care than I did in fixing the temporary stable. His small moment of triumph came with
the first lambs born on the farm. From then onwards the farm thrived on regular sales of lamb. An abundance of olives weighing 500k brought in extra income. As the future was becoming brighter, Ana announced her pregnancy out of the blue to a shocked husband. Were we really the sort of people to take in this awesome responsibility? Was the eccentric lifestyle we had chosen the right thing for a creature as delicate as a baby? The answer had to be yes. During the labour, Chris kept fainting and had to be removed from the theatre. When a blue rubbery thing was plonked on a towel on the sideboard Chris was paranoid in case the baby was abnormal. Once this blue rubbery thing became recognisable as his daughter he felt very sentimental, transfixed and enslaved. They called her Chloe. She was 3 when they christened her. They celebrated with paella and covered the tables with snowy cloths and wild flowers. Chloe had to be bribed with a bar of chocolate to allow Richard, the retired vicar, to anoint her with holy water and oil but the ceremony went without any hiccups. The informal congregation sang All Things Bright and Beautiful which soared across the valley gathering in strength. We hear about the drought and the heavy rains, the flooding of the river, the awesome erosion when the mountains were almost being swept down to the sea, the sense of isolation, feeling disheartened and threatened. But they survived and became stronger as a family. Chloe thrived and the farm flourished. The Stewarts felt that buying El Valero had been the right decision and they were able to weather the storms. Once you have finished reading Driving Over Lemons you have the sequel to look forward to: A Parrot in the Pepper Tree. Publisher: Sort of Books. ISBN: 0-95352270-9 also available on ekindle.
Book Review by Carol Naylor
As this is to be the last SolTimes published this year, it’s necessarily my last opportunity to wish all my readers every joy and happiness at Christmas and throughout the coming year. This year we’re staying here in Spain, but many friends are returning to Britain to be with families over the Christmas period – a drive of nearly 1500 miles up to Calais. And as we wish them Godspeed, we necessarily reflect on the similarly long journey of Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem in preparation for that first Christmas, some 2000 years ago. Of course, at just 70 miles, their journey was a little shorter, though no less arduous, and probably considerably more dangerous. Tradition may suggest that Mary rode a donkey, but there is no biblical or historical evidence to support this. And where we, with modern communications, can pre-arrange accommodation for each night we’re away, they had no such luxury, but had to make the most of whatever facilities they could find en route. And arriving tired and hungry at their destination, they found no warmth, no comfort and no welcome at the Inn, which had no room, but had to fend for themselves in a pretty unsavoury environment, far from the romantic portrayal of most Christmas Cards. And in that amazing act of loving humility, God Himself reached out to humanity, through His life, His death and His resurrection, to offer reconciliation; completely forgiving the wrong and evil in the lives of all who accept Him, to restore the close relationship we so desperately need, both now in this life and for eternity. How important therefore that this Christmas, we make room for Jesus in our lives, taking time out from the eating, drinking and partying, to worship and praise Him as the Shepherds did at His birth, remembering that this is what the celebrations are actually all about. So join us if you can for a service of 9 lessons and carols, either in Mojacar Pueblo at 8.00pm on the 16th, or at Albox Aljambra at 6.00pm on the 22nd. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

SOLTIMES DECEMBER 2013
Christmas Turkey with clementine & bay butter Method:
Ingredients:
5-5½ kg/11-12lb oven-ready turkey, neck and giblets removed and saved 1 onion, halved For the salt mix 5 bay leaves, crumbled if dry, torn if fresh 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaf, plus extra for scattering 1 tsp black peppercorn 85g/ 3oz coarse sea salt zest 1 orange, plus extra for scattering For the clementine & bay butter 100g/ 4oz butter, softened zest and juice 1 clementine splash of sherry large thyme sprig, leaves picked 2 bay leaves On-the-day gravy 4 tbsp flour 250ml/ 9fl oz dry sherry
Up to two days before, salt the turkey. If you have a spice grinder or minichopper, tip in all the ingredients for the salt mix and grind to make a wet salt. If you are using a pestle and mortar, grind the herbs and pepper together, then add the salt and orange zest, and grind well again. Set aside. Carefully rinse the turkey and pat dry with kitchen paper. Sit the turkey in its roasting tin and use the salt mix to season the turkey generously all over. Put the turkey breast-side up in the tin, cover with cling film and leave in the fridge for up to 2 days. (This can be done a day ahead but the longer you leave it, the more the flavour of the salt rub will permeate the bird.) To make the clementine & bay butter, mash all the ingredients together in a bowl with some seasoning and set aside. Can be made 2 days ahead or frozen for up to a month. Remove the turkey from the fridge 1 hr before you want to cook it and rinse off all the salt really well. Pat it dry, rinse out the roasting tin, then sit the turkey back in the tin and leave at room temperature for about 1 hr, uncovered. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Calculate a cooking time of 40 mins per kg for the first 4kg of the turkey, then 45 mins for every kg after that. Rub the turkey all over with most of the butter – no need to season. If you haven’t used the neck for the Make-ahead gravy (see ‘goes well with’), then add the neck to the tin with the onion. Cover the tin loosely with foil and roast for the calculated cooking time. For the final 30 mins, remove the foil, baste the turkey, scatter with the reserved thyme and orange zest, and increase the oven temp to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. (Now is the time to pop in the stuffings and roast potatoes, if you are doing them.) When the turkey is beautifully brown and cooked through, remove from the oven and leave to rest on a warm platter covered loosely with foil and a tea towel. If you’ve made our Make-ahead gravy (see ‘goes well with’), you can add the roasting juices to that. To make your gravy fresh, pour off most of the fat but leave the juices in the tin and put it on a low heat. Stir in the flour to a paste. Pour in the sherry and sizzle for 1 min, then gradually add 850ml water and simmer until you have a thick gravy – make sure to scrape up the sides of the tin to release any bits. Sieve the gravy into a saucepan and reheat to serve – the gravy probably won’t need extra seasoning as the turkey juices will be salty enough. Recipe from Good Food magazine, December 2012

SOLTIMES DECEMBER 2013
‘Twas the hour of the Great Chase, a trial for the bold, the fit and the fleet. The night, it was doom-dark, the air, it was cold, the wind full of sleet; Well, no, not quite, but it was dark, the air was cold, and the wind was what Granpa Sansom used to call ‘a Master’s wind’ meaning that you had to work hard and fast to keep warm! I was detailed with the job of transporting the Interval refreshments to the dressing room for the cast of the Luvvies production of Calendar Girls at Teatro Gilabert in Arboleas. Believe me they had earned it, so it was up to me not to mess up. The robe of responsibility hanging heavily around my shoulders I picked up the tray of drinks, which included 3 cups of tea, and set off around the outside of the building into the squally blackness of Arboleas. Aware that my load was not only liquid but also extremely unstable, I clutched the tray to my bosom and arched my arms around it, to afford it maximum protection from the rude advances of the wind. comparative shelter of the building, passed without incident but as I rounded corner 3 the capricious current saw its chance, whirlwinded in on my sheltered little harbour of a tray, snatched the three teabags from their moorings and sent them on an aerial tour of Arboleas. If the cast were to get tea and not hot water I had to act fast. But how? If I put the tray down to catch the teabags the cups would blow over and spill – the cast would have tea, but no water. So I did the only thing I could – I teetered towards the town in my high heels, keeping one eye on the tray and the other on the ever receding teabags! Two gave up quite quickly, and I managed to squat down, keep the tray level and protected from the wind, reach out and retrieve them in a sort of advanced Yoga-like move, but the third was on its edge, and cartwheeling quickly down into the town. I broke into a staccato trot, and managed to catch up with it. However, it showed no signs of stopping –if I wanted it, I would have to capture it on the move. There was nothing for it; I took a giant step, and nailed the errant teabag under my foot! I presume the resulting tea was OK – I have heard no reports of actors dying of tea poisoning!
Crispy Duck v TV Soaps . . . No Contest One of the greatest joys for us living in Spain is being able to eat out pretty much when we feel like it. Because of the great value for money that a huge number of restaurants offer, prompted by stiff competition exacerbated by the financial crisis, it has meant that most of us - particularly those on fixed incomes - can still enjoy this luxury. We particularly like a good Chinese when the mood takes us, and again, there is a large number from which to choose. If Wok buffets are your thing where you select what you want from a massive selection on offer, and eat until you explode for a fixed price – then this area is Wok heaven. These eateries are pretty much of a muchness as far as we are concerned, and we will only drop in if one is to hand when hunger strikes. Because being the cultured people that we are with finely honed palates, we prefer to eat in the more select establishments. These are the ones where you are greeted with a warm smile and personal greeting, rather than the familiar “Wah you whan?” And where the friendly serving staff are able to
discourse on an assortment of subjects. Mind you, once when I was asked whether I was going to be voting in the UK “erection”, I almost choked on my prawns gong bao. But how things have changed since my younger days. Then the highlight of the week was to put on the Burtons three piece, slap on a bit of Brut after shave - not forgetting that extra squirt into the grape smugglers - and get ourselves into town for a slap up meal. The last part of this operation needing delicate handling in order to avoid a nasty burning sensation that often required a hurried application of cold water. Then we would finish the evening performing something laughingly referred to as dancing, at the hottest club in town – the Thungumajig. I remember when the first Chinese restaurant opened in what was then, the backwoods town of Reading. It was called the Hong Kong and suddenly we were confronted with grub the like of which we had never seen or tasted before. After our first tentative steps into this strange world, it wasn’t long before we developed a taste for this wonderfully new exotic fare and began exploring the delights of chicken with ginger; egg fried rice and the contradictory sweet and sour pork. Our eyes were opened to the fact that there were actually more sauces

than HP, as we sampled Black Bean, Hoisin and Oyster. The only experience we had with noodles up to that point, were the dried ones found in a packet of powdered soup. In spite of the unsubstantiated whispers in dark corners that cats were mysteriously disappearing off the streets and that the Oriental version of ratatouille was exactly what it said on the tin, the new cuisine took off with a vengeance. Before long Chinese and Indian restaurants were rolling into town like tumbleweeds into Dodge City. They had well and truly arrived and nearly fifty years on they are regarded as an institution almost as British as fish and chips. Mind you back then, as much as we loved the occasional Chinese, our traditional palates still held sway and we often turned our attentions back to the tried and tested Saturday night blow out. A couple of pints of Courage best bitter, then a starter of prawn cocktail, followed by T-bone steak and chips finished off with black forest gâteau – all washed down with a bottle or two of Liebfraumilch. We even treated ourselves to Castella cigars and snifters of Courvoisier afterwards. We thought we were the bee’s knees. Menu’s in those days were pretty much standard wherever you went. Apart from the T-bones and sirloins, the limited selection included
the obligatory gammon steak with pineapple or egg slapped on top, half a roast chicken and naturally the good old fashioned apple pie and cream for pud. Now we are spoiled for choice with more restaurants than you can shake a debit card at and specialising in just about every nationality’s cuisine you can think of, up to and including Uzbekistani and Falklands. Chinese food too has come a long way from the days of chewy batter coated sweet and sour chicken balls and prawn curries, to restaurants that now specialise in such things as Szechuan, Cantonese and Hunan cuisine. And it’s not restricted to Chinese food, with the ever increasing number of Asian restaurants now offering Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and even Mongolian dishes alongside their regular menus. And all power to them; I didn’t retire just so that I could eat Iceland TV dinners, watching Emmerdale on the box every night.

The new owners of the Olive Mill promptly made everyone redundant. Employment law embodying the rights of workers was something overlooked by the Alquerian government when the Village became a republic. The fact that Loco Paco accidentally burnt the ‘fag’ packet on which the constitution was written didn’t help matters either. No one received compensation, the gates were simply chained shut and a curt notice posted on the crumbling factory wall. But there was another twist in the tail of Alqueria’s olive mill. The investors wanted to asset strip the plant, this was their sole intention from the outset of negotiations. Rodriquez, in his attempt to make the Mill look like a streamlined modern facility had made certain ‘arrangements’. Only painting the parts of the building which were visible from the car-park, only filling cracked brickwork that could be seen from the road. Then taking the investors on a tour of the much veneered plant after plying them with liberal quantities of Remitroot Whisky. The pieces of equipment seen by the investors were in fact carefully positioned cardboard cut-outs. The actual plant was dilapidated and ancient. If it had been in slightly better condition it may have qualified as scrap, a commodity not exactly scarce in Alqueria. The investors soon realised that the combined effects of Remitroot Whisky, cardboard and double back sticky tape had been their undoing. At Rodriquez’s insistence the phrase ‘as seen’ appeared frequently in the contract of sale. Rodriquez offered them one Euro to buy the mill back. He pointed out that under his careful management the place was now a worthless shadow of its former self. With one Euro for the Mill Rodriquez had made a net profit of one Euro fifty on the overall deal. Rodriquez was ecstatic. It was the first time he had turned a profit on any deal engineered by himself. He promptly set about getting the Mill working again. Making his inferior olive oil in the most inefficient method possible. It was the only way he knew, but he must be clever after all he had made a profit on his last business transaction. So Alqueria and its dysfunctional population had safely survived the manoeuvrings of the capitalist asset strippers. More by luck than anything else perhaps but once more Alqueria was in equilibrium. The Village slept soundly that night sure in the knowledge that normality had been restored. Once more their entire energy and imagination could be directed at the undeclared war of the barrios, which is after all the norm for the Pueblo.

It’s Christmaaas!! I know it’s Christmas because I’ve just heard Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody” for the 87th time! Poor Noddy Holder’s tonsils must be mangled by Boxing Day. But I do enjoy Christmas and right now I’m listening to some singer or other roasting his chestnuts over an open fire. Goodness me, the things people do for their art. When I say I enjoy Christmas, that’s not completely without reservations. There are two things that put a dampener on it for me; wrapping presents and Christmas tree lights. Actually you can make that three if we include Boney M singing “Mary’s Boy Child”. The problem-or problems-I have with the Christmas tree lights begin with finding the things. Often Helen will suggest storing them in a better place, which is fine, but eleven months later, can we find them? Then there’s getting them out of the box. It is an annual source of amazement to me how on earth those packers get so many lights into such a small box. Every time I pack them, they come out the next year like entwined strings of maniacal spaghetti! But perhaps I shouldn’t complain too much about that. A family in Australia have just put the finishing touches to their Christmas lights, all half a million of them. Get them back in the box if you can. Not surprisingly, they’ll be in the Guinness Book of Records next year-probably under the section for “The Record For The Most Arguments Caused By Small Electrical Items”! Anyway, after the lights, wrapping the presents looms large. I’m hopeless at it. I’ve tried but it’s a skill that’s beyond me and I’m not without skills-I play a mean game of Subbuteo, but unfortunately that’s of absolutely no use here. Forbidden delights When I was nine; my parents announced that an uncle was getting married. This news instilled such fear into me and I spent ages worrying about how the whole process worked. Not the wedding day but the whole boy meets girl, boy marries girl scenario. At such a tender age I feared I would never get married when I got older. Being one of three brothers my knowledge of girls at this stage was limited. Watching Pans People on Top of the Pops, scaring the girls at school with daddy long legs and playing kiss chase was about it. Armed with this vague knowledge I had no idea how ladies were met and enticed to walk down the aisle. I remember asking my parents if one had to go to that mythical place ‘the pub’ to meet a lady to get married. Without them realising the horrific yet irrational fears their son was having they informed me that yes indeed my uncle had meet his bride to me at ‘the pub.’ My fears were allayed! From the age of three my grandpa would take me to Sunday Mass at the pretty church at Harrow on the Hill. Afterwards we would walk to the Kings Head pub and he would drink a beer whist I threw pebbles down the well in the pub garden. Then it was home to my nans for Sunday lunch which always involved Yorkshire puddings and tinned peaches with ice-cream for afters. Being the first grandson I was lucky, we lived close to my grandparents and I often stayed with them at weekends. What I thought at the time was a carefully planned blissful holiday for me was actually also a break for my parents. I remember adventures such as riding the Metropolitan line into London to watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and walking along the embankment.
My grandmother took me to places like the National Gallery and from these outings I started to appreciate the arts. Then when I was five we moved out of London so my Gran would take the train and come and stay with us. I remember the two of us one winter’s afternoon walking the couple of miles to the cinema for the afternoon matinee showing of Disney’s Snow White, then walking home in the dark afterwards. Weekends meant us three boys had to be entertained and long walks in the country came cheap. As a treat sometimes we would stop at ‘the pub’ with our parents going inside ‘the pub;’ we were left outside each supplied with a bottle of coke with straw – had to have a straw, and crisps. ‘The pub’ was certainly a good thing even from a young age even if we never saw the inside of one. My dad was and is a keen sportsman; in his younger days he played hockey for Guildford. He started in the second team yet as the years passed and his legs slowed he slipped down the ranks to the fifth team, then into teams with strange names like the Gondoliers and Weysiders. We boys would travel with him visiting exotic faraway places like Maidenhead, Slough even Basingstoke. Clubhouses were heavenly as children were allowed inside. After each game tea was served and children inhaled the usually forbidden and heady aromas of sweat, spilt beer and pipe smoke whilst snaffling sandwiches from the buffer table! I remember having a sip of beer and saying ‘yuck’ and thinking how sad it was adults had to drink such foul drinks. No such problems for me now!

Browser Hijacking
I know that is nearly Christmas and last year a tradition was started where I take a Christmas story and adapt it to a technological theme. This year won’t be any different but that is something for next week! For this week the discussion is, as the banner headline suggests, about browser hijacking, what to look for, how to avoid it and my contact details to remove them as they can be troublesome little beggers! To start with what is browser hijacking, what are the symptoms, how did it get onto my computer, what can I do to prevent it from happening again and how do I get rid of it? These question form the outline of this article. So let’s get started. What is browser hijacking? Put simply, it is the action of redirecting, without your knowledge or consent, your start page to another site. What for? The reasons are many and varied, for example, the more people that go to a website, the more popular it is deemed to be and therefore the nearer the top of search engines (Yahoo, Google, Bing etc) first page they will be. This is important because how many of us go beyond page 2 for any given search? What are the symptoms? These usually follow a standard pattern of: constantly redirecting your browser away from your chosen start page; those annoying pop-up windows; You have a toolbar that you didn’t want or ask for; new icons on your desktop and start menu; the list goes on (and on) but the worst symptom is the way the computer slows down to a snail’s pace! The next bit is really the most important part of this article – How did it get onto my computer in the first place? The short answer is that you asked for it! Before you get uppity with me, let me explain. As part of many legitimate and legal programs, there is, sometimes, included the option to install ‘This Toolbar’ or ‘That Program’. I learned, many years ago, to choose the ‘Advanced’ option (which, in truth, is nothing of the sort!) which allows me to filter out these unwanted and unwelcome additions. Having said that, once you have ‘This Toolbar’ or ‘That Program” it can open the floodgates to hundreds of other ‘Potentially Unwanted Programs’!
Rule #1 IF YOU DIDN’T ASK FOR IT, DON’T INSTALL IT! This is even more true if the legitimate program demands that you have it! We have all used the option of ‘Full Install’ and away it goes adding everything! But for your continued happiness you should make use the ‘Advanced’ option and see just how ‘Un-Advanced’ it really is. Rule #2 Additional TOOLBARS are absolutely NOT NEEDED! Your browser comes with an adequate toolbar that, when organised, will help you to keep control of all your favourite websites. Rule #3 I have witnessed this problem time and time again over my 35 years in computers and have developed a number of techniques to get around the most sophisticated of counter-measures created by the idiots that write these programs! The best technique is education! Today has been part of that education.

The Scout was introduced in October 1919 as a 1920 model, with a 606 cc (37 cu in) engine. The engine size was increased to 745 cc (45 cu in) in 1927 in response to the popularity of the Excelsior Super X
In 1967 Herbert “Burt” Munro rides his self-modified 1920 Scout® to an under-1000cc land-speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Forty years later, Munro and his Indian’s record still stands. This was dramatised in the 2005 film The World’s Fastest Indian.

19th Hole Golf Society Cucador
Thursday 5th December with beautiful sunshine and temperatures steadily climbing the 19th Hole Golf Society danced its way round the Valle del Este course in this Waltz competition. With new temporary rules in place aimed at making the course a bit more manageable for the older high handicappers, off they set. The course really is a beautiful setting for a country walk, but few found the tough conditions around the course easy to cope with, except the team of Nick Pogson, Ron Curtis, Syd Walker and Ray Wicking. With Ray and Ron playing off the blues ( which had been placed halfway up each fairway to accommodate some of our Scandinavian tourists by the ground staff, instead of just in front of the yellow tees) easily beat the rest of us who played off the yellow or red Tees. Communication is a wonderful thing providing everyone understands the same interpretation of the communication. Ray Wicking rounded his day off nicely by taking Nearest the Pin on the 6th hole (yes he did play off the yellow on the par threes). Mark Danson had the only Two of the day on the 6th Hole. Really good fun day with some good golf in parts and lot of good humour all the way round, rounded off with great sandwiches back at La Vida in the evening.
Results Team Waltz 1st Nick Pogson, Ron Curtis, Syd Walker and Ray Wicking 81 points 2nd Mark Danson,Nigel Greenwood, Geoff Smith and Gary Grey 71 points 3rd Brian Lowden, Ian Postles, Don Harbron and Fred The Ghost 69 points Nearest the Pin. 6th Hole Ray Wicking 12th Hole Pete Hodges 17th Hole Dave Denyer Twos. Mark Danson Hole No 6
The 19th hole G/S is now arranging weekly games at various courses in the area, our home course, which we play fortnightly, is Aguilon. If you are interested in joining the 19th hole give the secretary a ring on 610340653. Or email gs19thhole@ hotmail.co.uk

new Lexus F unveiled
Lexus has released a single “teaser” image that shows a small section of the car’s front wing, wheel, bumper and headlight, and from this it appears that the car is almost certainly the RC-F - a high-performance version of the RC coupé that was unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo motor show last month.
The RC is a two-door coupé version of the IS saloon and a production version - which will be a rival for cars such as the new BMW 4-series coupé - is expected to go on sale in 2014. Lexus is yet to reveal any technical details of the new F model. Its predecessor - the IS-F - was sold in the UK between 2008 and 2012. It had a 417bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine. More details of the new F model are expected to be revealed closer to its unveiling at the Detroit show.

England have been drawn with Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D of the 2014 World Cup. Spain have been grouped with Australia, Chile and Holland. See full details of the draw on page. Last night final Bayern Munich played Manchester City, FC Copenhagen faced Real Madrid and Manchester United met Shakhtar Donetsk in their final Champions League group games while tonight it’s Barcelona v Celtic, Chelsea (needing a point to progress) v Steau Bucharest and Napoli v Arsenal. Tomorrow, in the Europa League, Wigan take on Maribor, FC Gallen play Swansea who need a point to make the last 32, and Tottenham meet Anzhi. Manchester United have suffered successive home defeats for the first time in over a decade, losing 1-0 to Everton and 1-0 to Newcastle whose victory at Old Trafford was their first in 41 years. Stoke beat Chelsea (3rd) for the first time since 1975, Oussama Assaidi’s superb last minute goal giving the Potters a 3-2 victory. And having won 4-3 at bottom club Sunderland a few days earlier, this was the first time Jose Mourinho’s side had conceded three goals in successive PL games since 1999. Leaders Arsenal, after beating Hull 2-0 and drawing 1-1 with Everton, are now five points clear of Liverpool who walloped Norwich 5-1 and West Ham 4-1. Luis Suarez hit a four-timer against the Canaries, making it 11 goals in four PL games against the Carrow Road club. Manchester City (4th) won 3-2 win at WBA and drew 1-1 at Southampton. Three London clubs - Fulham, Crystal Palace (winners of their last two matches) and West Ham - are 17th, 18th and 19th in the PL. Out of sorts Manchester United are 9th - yet manager David Moyes says: “We can still win the title!” The top two PL matches this weekend are Manchester City v. Arsenal and Spurs v.
by Tony Matthews Liverpool. Burnley, Leyton Orient, Oxford and Celtic head the Championship, FL1, FL2 and the SPL respectively. The draw for the 3rd round of the FA Cup has thrown up some terrific ties, including ArsenalSpurs, Derby-Chelsea, Everton-QPR, Manchester United-Swansea, Newcastle-Cardiff, StokeLeicester, holders Wigan-MK Dons, non-League Kidderminster-Peterborough and MacclesfieldSheffield Wednesday. Last week, Blackpool had FIVE players sent-off in two Championship matches in four days. FIFA’s Michel Platini wants the yellow card to be replaced by a sin bin penalty of perhaps 10 or 15 minutes, like in rugby. Nigerian defender Sam Sodje, ex-Brentford, WBA, Charlton and Leeds, has been arrested by police in respect of match-fixing. He’s admitted deliberately getting sent-off playing for Portsmouth against Oldham last February. Battered England are two-nil down in the fivematch Ashes series, having crashed to a 218 run defeat in the second Test in Adelaide. The third Test starts in Perth on Friday. Over 1,400 runs were scored in the recent drawn Test between New Zealand and the West Indies. And three former New Zealand players are being investigated for match-fixing. Australia’s Neil Robertosn beat England’s Mark Selby 10-7 in the UK snooker final in York. Christine Ohuruogu has been named British Sportswoman of the Year. And finally, Britain’s Rugby Union clubs have ALL reiterated that they will not compete in next year’s Heineken Cup.

Andalucian Bowling Federation (Almeriense)
Over the weekends of 23-25 November and 30 Nov2 December the Andalucian Bowling Federation (Almeriense) Mens and Ladies Singles and Pairs were played at Indalo and Cabrera Bowling Clubs. The Mens Singles took place at Indalo Bowling Club at the end of November with 36 players taking part. The four semi finalists all came from Indalo Bowling Club with Derek Webb winning 21-13 over Mick Johnson and John Dedman beating Steve Grattage 21-9. The final saw John take an early lead over Derek - but Derek pulled back to take he lead on 12th end and, despite a great effort from John, Derek kept the lead to win 21-17. During the same weekend the Ladies Pairs took place at Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club. By sheer coincidence in the first round Maureen Milsom and Linda Harvey from Indalo met Maureen De Boer and Linda Lester, also from Indalo. Needless to say Maureen and Linda won! (De Boer and Lester that is). The first semi final saw Mo and Linda in a match against Jan Dando and Debbie Colquhoun where Jan and Debbie won to meet Doreen Hall and Jan Johnson in an all Indalo final after Doreen and Jan J. beat Maureen Stakes and Sue Mannall from Almeria B.C.
in the other semi. In the final Jan and Debbie were the eventual winners with a result of 19-10. In the Mens Pairs on the second weekend, after a very cold Sunday the semi finals were played on a much warmer Monday morning which saw Chris Ewer and John Fitzgerald from Almeria Bowling Club win 19-11 over Keith Harvey and Gerard Donck from Indalo Bowling Club plus Peter Sands and David Jenkins from Cabrera win 27-13 against David Ebdon and Colin Thomas again from Indalo. The final on Monday afternoon was a very close contest and at the 16th end the score was 12-10 to Chris and John who went on to take the last 2 ends to win 1710. At the same time at Indalo the Ladies Singles took place with 24 ladies competing. Both semi finals saw fairly comfortable wins for the eventual finalists. Jan Dando beat Barbara Ruscoe 21-2 and Chris Dedman (keeping it in the family) claimed the match against Doreen Hall 21 shots to 9. Again, all semi finalists were from Indalo. The final was a very close affair and the score was 9-8 to Chris after 10 ends. Chris maintained her lead until the 17th end where the score was then 16-16 and Jan then went ahead to claim the title 21-16.

This did not stop Bar Mosquitos taking the match 6 – 2 , which moves them up to 9th place in the league. Splash got back to winning ways, easing an 8 – 0 scoreline against Crazy Pinz. All three Splash bowlers contributed well, with Antonio Berenger 588, Diego Munoz 603 and Juanjo Carral 613 handicap series, bowling three steady games. Gunter Wilms responded for CP with his highest scratch and handicap scores of the season to date, 459 and 585 respectively.
