EWN Media Group Expands Newspaper Portfolio

EWN Media Group (EWNMG) has further expanded its portfolio of newspapers by taking over the Sol Times publications. The takeover announcement comes just weeks after EWNMG, the parent company of Euro Weekly News , added the well-established, three-edition RTN Costa Blanca newspaper firm to its expanding empire. Originally launched in the Almeria area in 2005, since then the Sol Times has further expanded into Costa Calida, Mar Menor, and Costa Blanca. After completing the latest takeover negotiations earlier this month, Michel and Steven Euesden, owners of EWNMG, instigated internal restructuring.

This has today led to all four editions of Sol Times being back on the streets with a greater print run and improved distribution, upgraded paper quality and size, and increased news content. Michel said: “The aim of EWNMG is to offer all media clients the very best advertising and marketing opportunities to suit their target audience needs as well as their budgets. “With the four additional Sol Times edition titles added to the group we now offer the widest choice of advertising options along the Costas with three newspaper brands and a total of 13 editions. “Based on more than 20 years experience and local knowledge originally gained by EWN – the founding and ever-present strength of EWNMG – I know that exciting times lie ahead for the Sol Times publications and team members as part of a much larger media family.” The Sol Times was originally founded by Rob and Chrissie Matthews and they have run the titles for the last 12 years.

Freedom of speech

For the most part, social media users in democracies are free to express their opinions online. In Spain, however, that’s not the case. Cassandra Vera, a 21-year-old student from the city of Murcia in the south-east of Spain, has been sentenced to a year in prison, and disqualified from public functions for seven years, after making jokes on Twitter that “glorified terrorism”. Between 2013 and 2016, Vera published 13 tweets that commented on terrorist group ETA’s assassination of Luis Carrero Blanco, which happened in 1973. Blanco had been expected to succeed dictator Francisco Franco, and was a long time ally of the general. Ruling on her crime, judges in the National Audience, Spain’s top criminal court, stated that Vera’s tweets “constitute contempt, dishonour, disrepute, mockery and affront to the people who have suffered the blow of terrorism”.

Oil slick battle

Emergency teams in the Canary Islands raced on Saturday to contain a three-kilometer oil slick caused by a ferry crashing into underwater fuel pipes, the regional government said in a statement. The regional government activated emergency plans to control and clean up the nearly two-mile spill around Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Telde, the two main towns on the Spanish resort island of Gran Canaria, the regional government said. No one at the emergency services or government could be reached for further comment on Saturday. The ferry crashed into a pier where the pipes were located late on Friday after suffering a technical fault that caused a power cut, a spokesman for operating company Naviera Armas on Saturday. Emergency services say five of the injured needed to receive attention at a hospital. Televised images showed the ferry hitting the breakwater head-on, sending chunks of the concrete wall tumbling down onto a service road.

Growth in Spain is expected to remain above 2% over the 2017-18 period – higher than predictions for other oft-celebrated European economies such as Germany, but lower than the 3.2% registered over 2015 and 2016. OECD secretary-general Angel Gurría commended Spain’s “impressive performance”, with improving public finances and the benefits of reforms undertaken in recent years coming to fruition. However, the country still has further to go in helping its economy recover from a severe recession

in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Unemployment remains stubbornly high, although it is falling, and the country loosened its purse strings after voters rejected further austerity in a general election in 2015 – a move the International Monetary Fund said helped boost growth in the short term, but would not support it in the long run. Gurría also stressed that while Spain is “on the right track”, reform momentum has to be sustained.

Irish citizen killed in Spanish holiday resort crash A man understood to be an Irish citizen has been killed in a car accident in Magaluf, Spain in the early hours of Sunday morning. The man, who has not yet been named, was struck by a car on the Carrer Pinada, off the Carrer Punta Ballena, at approximately 3am. Police arrested a Spanish citizen who has tested positive for alcohol and drugs, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin. Reports suggest that the deceased is an Irish

citizen. The Department of Foreign Affairs told Independent.ie they have not yet been contacted in relation to the incident but stand ready to provide assistance. Emergency services rushed to the scene where paramedics spent approximately 30 minutes attending to the man. However, the man, aged in his forties, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 3.30am. It is not yet known if the man was a resident of the area.

and taken to the plane by a member of staff. He said, ‘My mother struggles with mobility. She has diabetes and heart problems and is short of breath. ‘She can walk two steps at a time but she really struggles. ‘When my parents were in the

executive lounge, my father kept looking at his watch and he asked three times if there was someone coming for them. ‘By the third time they still hadn’t come and one of the staff said ‘Right, I’ll take you down’, even though its not her job to do that. ‘But by the time they got to the gate they were taking the cases off the flight. ‘My parents were left in the lurch.’ A member of staff booked Mr and Mrs Crowther into a hotel for the night and booked them onto a flight on Friday evening. The next morning, Mrs Crowther’s blood sugar levels had risen significantly and she was too unwell to travel. Stephen, who owns a civil engineering company, had to take time off from work to collect them from the airport. ‘In the past she loved to travel and the airport staff have been

excellent.’ Mr and Mrs Crowther have been going on holiday to Spain since the early 1960s and used to own a home on the Costa Brava. Mrs Crowther’s health has made travelling more difficult in recent years, but the pair still hope to go on their holiday. Stephen said: ‘I suggested we could try again next week. ‘I wouldn’t want mum to stop going, it’s something they really enjoy. Stephen said this is the first problem they’ve had while travelling to Spain. The executive lounge is outsourced to company OCS, who look after passengers and make sure they get to their flights on time. OCS said, ‘OCS Group immediately apologised privately to the two passengers and is happy to do so publicly. ‘We regret the inconvenience to the two passengers and the cause of their delay is currently under investigation.’

King of Spain visit is postponed

The King of Spain’s state visit to the UK has been postponed after his country’s foreign minister indicated that staging it during the UK’s general election would not be appropriate. The visit of King Felipe VI and his wife, Queen Letizia, had been scheduled for June 6-8, which would have coincided with polling day, but will now take place from July 12-14, Buckingham

Palace said. The rescheduling comes after Spain’s foreign minister, Alfonso Dastis, said his country does not deem it appropriate to continue with the state visit when politicians will be on the campaign trail and Parliament has been dissolved ahead of the June 8 election. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “Her Majesty Queen

Elizabeth II and His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain have agreed that, in light of the general election, the planned state visit to the United Kingdom from 6th to 8th June 2017 by King Felipe and Queen Letizia should be postponed. The visit will now take place on 12th to 14th July 2017.”

A MAN FOR PILAR

ilar had made a serious mistake. She was looking for love on the internet. That however wasn’t the mistake. The mistake was allowing Manuela to find out. For those who haven’t been paying attention, Manuela is the ‘femme fatale’ of Alqueria and Pilar her understudy and Pilar hated Manuela with a hatred that was almost tangible. Manuela now saw the opportunity of making a nuisance of herself and set about creating the perfect profile with which to bait the soon to be unfortunate Pilar.

George Clooney ‘Photoshopped’ produced the perfect image and a paragraph plagiarised from ‘The perfect Man Monthly’, a fictional magazine, completed the perfect profile. Manuela was in high glee as she posted it on ‘B2gether. com’ the website for the terminally lonely in answer Pilar’s pitiful plea for a life’s partner. With a self-satisfied smile Manuela sipped a chilled Remitroot piña colada as she waited for events to unfold. As she waited for Pilar to respond she occupied herself by putting her own profile online, just as a ‘distraction’ she told herself. It was to be her own petard which would, in due course to hoist her. Fate is fickle and Manuela was due a full helping of ‘karma’. Karma in shape of Antonio Poyato who lusted after Manuela like a Berber

hungers for sherbet. Seeing Manuela’s profile online he set about preparing the ‘perfect’ profile. George, once again came in for editing, this time with a goatee beard and duelling scar while the profile was completed with an extract from the end paper of ‘Biggles Flies Undone’. Antonio Poyato duly responded to Manuela’s post and waited. The situation is thus. Pilar, in a state of high sexual agitation responded to Manuela’s bogus profile. Manuela had bribed Pongy Pedro to meet Pilar on her fake profile’s behalf. To explain Pedro’s epithet, he has a rare fungal condition that effects the groin with an aroma of a decaying halibut, a ginger tabby cat has been following him about for the past two weeks. Manuela, in a similar state of agitation had responded to Anotonio’s Poyato´s fake profile. Meetings had been arranged. Both couples were to meet at the same time at the Bar La Casa Devante and both couples were to wear the flower of the early Remitroot plant, this being a traditional symbol of fertility. Not that the ladies in question needed any help in that direction. What could possible go wrong? Antonio Poyato met Pilar instead of Manuela, they enjoyed a brief but vigorous relationship. This was fortunate as Manuela’s reaction at being presented with poyato instead of a Clooney lookalike could have proved fatal for the lovelorn Antonio. Manuela cut her losses and took Pongy Pedro home for vermin control purposes. This of course was never spoken of again. Listen to the latest Episode of Alqueria the radio show at www.alqueria.eu.

CanDu Computer Bytes

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail. co.uk. To complete the triad of usual suspects for annoying computer click we will have to cover the one that should and does cause the most concern. This is the sound of your computer’s hard drive failing. Before I describe what to listen for, and how to remedy the problem, I want to ask you a simple question. “Do you regularly back up all your important information to an external drive using the 3,2,1 system?”. If the answer is “What are you on about?” contact me about the article describing this simple system for data protection. Now on to the symptoms. You can expect to hear a gentle hum or whirring from a working hard drive,

and if you listen very carefully, the sound of gentle clicking as the read/write arm moves into position. All of these are normal sounds! What you are looking for, but really don’t want to hear, is the relatively loud, regular click very much like a metronome. This is where the internal circuits boards are starting to break down. NOW is the time to do the emergency 3,2,1 back up if you haven’t done it already as you have hours until it completely fails. It is possible to find, buy and replace the faulty circuit board and, in my experience, not particularly expensive. So it is an option worth considering. Otherwise, replacing a drive is simple in both Laptops and Towers and should take no more than 5 minutes.

Return To Sender t didn’t fit, so it had to go back.

It had arrived in a robust cardboard box. With one masterful slit of the Stanley knife Pete had opened the box and removed the object without damage to the contents or his temper. Therefore it was child’s play to re-insert it, securely tape the box shut and felt-tip the return address prominently. I bore the box to the Correos confident in the knowledge that it was: Securely packed. Securely closed. Correctly and prominently addressed, and most of all that the Correos was open! I waited for several months while the Chica behind the counter patiently walked the girl in front of me through the process involved in sending a registered letter and the benefits thereof. Eventually it was my turn. I proffered my box and explained my purpose. ‘We can’t take it. It’s still got it’s bar code on it.’ The Chica informed me. No problem. ‘May I borrow your biro?’ I enquired, and proceeded to scribble out the offending bar code. ‘No, that’s no good. The machine will still see it. You have to remove it.’ It must have good eyesight – I couldn’t see it anymore! Nevertheless, I picked it off the counter and took it next door to the Papelería. ‘Have you got something that I can stick over this bar code?’ This time it was a Chico. He gazed at me blankly. Seeing his confusion I explained why

By Jos Biggs and for what. Wordlessly and slightly nervously he handed me a piece of card and a huge roll of sticky tape, then retreated to a safe distance to watch as I covered over the indecipherable bar code. Back to the Correos. I handed over my patchwork box. The Chica turned it over a few times. ‘There’s no return address.’ She sighed. I felt like pointing out that there had been a return address, but now it was underneath the paper card, next to the bar code, but I thought better of it – it wasn’t her fault; rules is rules! I borrowed the biro again, and she watched while I wrote in our address. I had a horrible feeling that she was going to reject it yet again, as the biro’d address was in blue, not black, but I think she had had enough problems for the day, so she took it and 4€ and the box disappeared into the inner workings of the Spanish postal system.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

Just a week or so back, a BBC survey revealed that 50% of those questioned, including many claiming to be Christians, stated they didn’t believe the Easter story of the resurrection of Jesus. It may therefore be surprising to learn that there’s more written historical evidence of an empty tomb and of Jesus having been seen alive by large numbers of people in the weeks following his very public execution than of the existence of Julius Caesar. In addition to the four separate accounts contained in Scripture, some of which were available and uncontested by the Authorities within a few years of the event, early Roman (Josephus) and Jewish (Toledoth Jesu) historians similarly confirm these facts. That Jesus had died was beyond question; certified by the Roman executioner, who then, dispelling any doubt, speared him through heart and lungs. That the grave in which he’d been entombed was empty just days later, was accepted by the Authorities, who neither argued nor produced a body, providing instead the unlikely explanation that “thieves had broken in and stolen the corpse whilst all Roman Guards slept!” This, at a time when sleeping on duty was a capital offence! That many people claimed they’d met, spoken and even shared a meal with Jesus after his resurrection, was again uncontested, other than suggestion that they were lying or

hallucinating. Yet these, for the most part, simple, ordinary witnesses, who a few days earlier had been terrified to admit even knowing Jesus, all told similar stories, and were themselves sufficiently convinced of his resurrection, that they were ready to face torture and death rather than retract their statements. Hardly likely if they knew their evidence to be untrue. And then there was Saul, the ultimate hostile witness; a man determined to destroy these “rumours”, who himself met the risen Christ and became as a result the greatest protagonist for the new religion, which affirmed that Jesus, Son of God had risen from the grave.

With all this evidence, how can anyone seriously doubt the resurrection? Karting crash

A

n 11-year-old boy has died Sunday from injuries

sustained during a karting accident at two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso’s track in northern Spain, the Spanish racing federation said.

The boy suffered a “serious accident” during a private practice session on Saturday at the track in Llanera in Alonso’s home region of Asturias, it said in a statement. He was not able to overcome his injuries and died in the early hours of Sunday (April 23), the

statement added, without providing further details about the accident. Spanish media said the boy’s kart crashed with another kart and flipped over, trapping him underneath. The federation said an investigation into the accident was under way. Alonso said in a Twitter message that he was “devastated” by the news of the boy’s death. “I woke up early this morning to one of the saddest days. Shattered. A big hug to the family of Gonzalo and all in karting.” he added. The boy’s hometown of Villarcayo declared an official day of mourning.

There is no British exodus

Claims Britons are leaving because their future rights to stay in the European Union nation are not guaranteed have been dismissed. But as euroscepticism rises in Spain due to the country’s debt problem officials are being urged to resolve the residency fears to prevent a future exodus. As many as 130,000 Britons are said to live in the Costa Blanca which runs along the Alicante coastline. There is no British exodus on the Costa Blanca, the figures, are inflated for political reasons Sonja Dietz , president of the Business Circle of Marina Alta However, disputed local census reports claim the population is dwindling suggesting the ‘Anglo Saxons’ are leaving in their droves.

In San Miguel de las Salinas, where British people outnumber the locals, apparently 43 per cent have gone in eight years. In Benitatxell, 124 kilometres to the north, it is said approximately 50 per cent have gone. In Benissa the population has dropped by 44 per cent, in Teulada by 49 per cent, as well as a 55 per cent drop in San Fulgencio. While the same data says that the Spanish population in the region is growing by an average of five per cent each year. However, locals strongly dispute the claims Britons are leaving in their droves. Sonja Dietz , president of the Business Circle of Marina Alta told El Confidencial: “There is nothing happening. “Our businesses have not been affected, not even the real estate. “In fact, prices are rising. “The only thing we have noticed is that the cheap housing in the

area is over and that has slowed the arrival of new residents a bit.” The majority of the British people living in Spain are pensioners who moved there for the sun. Estimates by the Institute of Economic Studies of the Province of Alicante (INECA), say Britons add more than 2,300 million euros to the province each year. Despite this Britons are being refused their basic rights to ascertain their legal status as the EU continues to dig its heels in. Local resident Tina Brown said: “Until Brexit everything was happiness here, the biggest concern we had was how to validate a driving licence. “Now there is fear, everyone asks what will happen, but we do not know.” Observer Merrick Wells wrote in Spanish constitution site Diario Espanol: “For all the hand wringing, uncertainty and political manipulation, this can be solved rapidly and amicably if either.”

25 Arrests Made

Spanish police have arrested 25 Chinese nationals suspected of forming a criminal gang whose primary business was trafficking and sexually exploiting women in Barcelona brothels. Eleven of the 25 arrested in the swoop on April 10 have been detained pending further investigation, police in the northeastern city said in a statement on Wednesday. The rest were released without charges, but their passports were confiscated. Twenty-two Chinese women who had been forced to work as prostitutes were freed during the operation, which followed nearly eight months of investigation.

JOSHUA & KLITSCHKO CLASH IN WORLD TITLE

How much is the fight purse going to be? The latest news is that it will be £20million.

What will the total be with PPV and ticket revenue? Around £40million.

What’s the split going to be? 50/50 between the two fighters.

What’s the latest news?

Wladimir Klitschko was never really embraced by the average boxing fan, despite dominating a lackluster heavyweight division for the better part of a decade. He understands why, even as he looks to change his ways in what could be his last hurrah next week against Anthony Joshua in London. “It’s not as boring as it was with me during all those years,” Klitschko said. “You can like me or hate me but when one person conquers it all, it is boring. I totally get it.” It wasn’t just Klitschko’s dominance that soured boxing fans on him. It was the way he fought. Every opponent was kept at arm’s length. Punches were traded cautiously - probably with good reason, considering what Lamon Brewster did to him back in 2004. style points, though he kept winning against a series of Klitschko never won any opponents who could never seem to crack the code. Then Tyson Fury entered the picture, making Klitschko look slow and old in breaking his 11-year winning streak to win his heavyweight titles. Now Klitschko challenges the unbeaten Joshua for the title once again. He does so as an underdog going into enemy territory, with 90,000 fans expected to be cheering their countryman on a week from Saturday at Wembley Stadium. At the age of 41, he says he feels like a new fighter. Even better, he says he feels like really fighting. “I understand I don’t have titles anymore, but in a certain way I feel relieved,” Klitschko he said in a press call from his training camp in Austria. “I feel calmer, more free. Before it was all defending and caution. Now it’s different, and I like the feeling that I don’t have any pressure.” The fight shapes up as a familiar boxing matchup, with the up-and-coming young slugger from England tested by the aging veteran who has piled up a deep bag of tricks over the years. Both are Olympic gold medalists (Klitschko in 1996, Joshua in 2012). Both are massive heavyweights with the skills usually found in smaller fighters. Both have the kind of knockout power that may make it a short night in London. And Klitschko now says it’s time to throw caution to the wind.

Boxing returns to Wembley Stadium connected by EE in 2017 for a heavyweight bout of titanic proportions. On Saturday 29 April 2017 Anthony Joshua will face Wladimir Klitschko under the arch for the IBF, IBO and WBA Super Heavyweight Championships of the world. It will be the second time in three years Matchroom Boxing have partnered with the national stadium to bring boxing to an enormous stadium audience. In 2014 a packed house saw Carl Froch knock out George Groves in a highly anticipated rematch. Joshua was the opening fight of that memorable night as he despatched Matt Legg inside a mere 86 seconds. No doubt the current IBF World Heavyweight Champion would love a repeat of that performance on 29 April! Anthony Joshua: “This fight will be one of the biggest nights in my boxing career, it marks the highest point of my climb through the professional ranks. It is three years since I turned professional, I have taken the time to gain experience, fight men who have fallen and some who have fought hard and through this I am learning my trade, how the business works and gaining the ring craft which is sometimes underestimated as everyone wants to see the mega fights right away. It is the perfect time for me to move up another step and contest my heavyweight championship belt against one of the legends of our sport. There is no doubt this will be a titanic battle with a huge amount on the line, just like every fight, but when I enter the ring I will be prepared for victory as I have been with all my other fights. The legend against the champ – it’s time to write history.” Wladimir Klitschko: “I’m looking forward to this fight of the year, just like boxing fans all around the world. This is the first time in a decade that I’m the challenger again. I will fight against a champion who I consider the best of the young generation. Basically experience will take on youth. This makes this fight that unique. I will be ready for the challenge!”

SET FOR REMATCH AFTER

ANTHONY JOSHUA and Wladimir Klitschko are set for an incredible rematch straight after their world heavyweight title fight, according to reports. The pair are said to have agreed a rematch clause in their contract that could be triggered by either fighter. They trade leather at Wembley on Saturday. Both camps have refused to confirm any details of their agreement but it is believed both want a rematch in the event of defeat. And though not guaranteed, only a devastating defeat for 41-year-old Klitschko would likely stop the rematch going ahead. Both fighters stand to earn millions from the bout – Joshua wants to become the sport’s first billionaire – and a rematch would appeal to both. However, Joshua could be forced to give up his IBF belt almost as soon as he defends it. If Joshua beats Klitschko he is due to fight Kubrat Pulev in November in a mandatory defence of his crown. AJ was given permission by the IBF to delay his mandatory so that next week’s unification blockbuster when the vacant WBA title will also be on the line, could go ahead. But IBF officials are insisting they won’t delay the fight with Pulev any longer than November and with the WBA ready to name Luis Ortiz as their mandatory challenger before the end of the year, Joshua will be forced to give one of them up. Promoter Eddie Hearn explained: “You’re going to get the problem of multiple mandatories coming up. “So after this fight with Klitschko, AJ’s mandatory is Pulev with the IBF. “At some point probably this year, the WBA mandatory is Luis Ortiz. “Will he have to vacate one of them? Quite possibly unless a deal can be done.”

UNIFICATION BLOCKBUSTER!!!

“I’m so happy to get this fight made,” said Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “It is the biggest Heavyweight fight in the last decade and a fight that will belong in the legacies of both fighters. It’s the young lion against a legend of the sport. Many felt AJ would not take this challenge and that it’s too early for him but he wants to test himself and give the fans great fights. After all, isn’t that what you want to see? The risk, the dice being rolled, the 50-50 fights that will excite and ignite the World of Boxing. Everything is on the line in this fight, not just the IBF and WBA’s titles, but hopes, dreams and even careers.” Bernd Boente, Managing Director of Klitschko Management Group: “I’m very happy that our teams make this mega event happen and that three belts are on the line. Two Olympic Super-Heavyweight Champions facing each other. This is the best heavyweight fight that could be. This is a promoter’s dream fight. The young, undefeated champion against the best heavyweight of the past decade. This kind of duel only happened a couple of times in boxing history and it was always the same question: Is the young lion ready to take over or can the old lion defend his territory?” The World Heavyweight unification blockbuster between Anthony Joshua MBE and Wladimir Klitschko has broken box office records with over 80,000 tickets sold for the April 29 super fight at Wembley Stadium Connected by EE, live on Sky Sports Box Office. The second batch of tickets for the blockbuster fight sold inside one hour when they released at lunchtime on Monday and the total tickets now sold has exceed the record set by Carl Froch’s World Super Middleweight title rematch against George Groves in 2014. Promoter Eddie Hearn said: “The demand for tickets for Joshua vs Klitschko is phenomenal – this is unquestionably the biggest fight in British boxing history and we would have sold out Wembley twice over. “We have put a request in to Brent Council, the Mayor’s office and TFL to increase the capacity by a further 5,000 tickets. We are confident of a positive answer and we will release further news shortly. Roll on April 29!” Joshua MBE will face former World ruler Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF World Heavyweight title and the vacant IBO Championship as well as the WBA Super Championship on April 29, 2017 at Wembley Stadium Connected by EE.

OUR CHOICE Anthony Joshua: The Road To Klitschko Ep 1 Tuesday 25 April 11.45pm-12.45pm BBC ONE Anthony Joshua versus Wladimir Klitschko, in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium on April 29, will be the biggest live event in the history of British boxing. For the past two years, the BBC has followed Anthony Joshua with unprecedented access to his dressing room, hotels, at home and in training before and after fights, starting with his clash against fellow Brit Dillian Whyte almost two years ago. The result of that access is Anthony Joshua: The Road To Klitschko; a remarkably intimate portrayal of a young fighter and his rise to the very pinnacle of boxing’s most prestigious division. The fact the suspect is still on the loose means he could return and strike again. In interview, the victim says: “It makes you panic especially when you’ve got a child here with you and you’re on your own. And you feel vulnerable obviously anyway after what’s just happened. You don’t feel strong anymore, you don’t feel like you can protect your child any more.”

They attempt longer and longer distances and even travel to the Brecon Beacons for a mountain run. In this episode we catch up with Rhian, Shereece, Jake and Claudia, who struggles with an extreme form of OCD.

Treatments for chickenpox

1

Painkillers Use paracetamol if you or your child have a high temperature (fever) and feel uncomfortable. Paracetamol is safe for most people to take – including pregnant women and children over two months of age. Special liquid versions are available for young children and babies. Don’t use anti-inflammatory painkillers, such as ibuprofen, as they can sometimes make people with chickenpox very ill. Never give aspirin to a child under 16 as it can be dangerous for them.

2

Prevent itching and scratching Chickenpox can be very itchy, but it’s important not to scratch the spots as it can increase the chances of the skin becoming infected with bacteria and could result in scarring. It can help to: keep nails short and clean tap or pat the skin instead of scratching it wear cotton gloves at night (or socks over hands) bathe in cool or lukewarm water – dab or pat the skin dry afterwards, rather than rubbing it wear loose, smooth cotton clothing You can also buy calamine lotion, moisturising creams, cooling gels or an antihistamine medicine called chlorpheniramine to help reduce itching and soothe the skin.

3

Food and drink It’s important to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Water is better than sugary, fizzy or acidic drinks – particularly if you or your child has chickenpox spots in the mouth. Sugar-free ice lollies are also a good way of getting fluids into children and can help soothe a sore mouth.

Children as young as 13 being lasting addiction to mobile

Children as young as 13 are checking in to a US treatment centre to try to break their addiction to mobile devices. Experts have warned that exposing children to electronic screens leaves them at risk of permanent damage. The reSTART Life Centre near Seattle is the only treatment unit of its kind in the western world and helps youngsters with addictions to digital technology, including video games. Its founder Dr Hilarie Cash told Sky News: “When you start handing these devices to young children and they’re distracted by the movement, the colour and sound coming from this device, that is mesmerising enough that it will override all those natural instincts that children actually have for movement and exploration and social interaction.” She advises people of all ages to restrict their use of devices to certain scheduled times and says families should confront their worries about the increasing influence of technology. “I think it is really important to

come together as a family and talk about tech and how much is good, how much is ok and when does it start to interfere with family relationships, with responsibilities, with sleep, and many other things,” she said. That advice would be welcomed by the Koch family in Los Angeles. Michael, 14, and Sophia, 7, are dedicated to their phones and tablets to a degree that concerns their parents. Dad Robert Koch said: “I can punish him and say ‘If you don’t clean your room, this is going to happen’ and he doesn’t care but if I

say ‘You don’t clean your room, I’m taking away your phone’ he has a nervous

breakdown. “It has come to the point where that is how you threaten a kid, you take away his data and he freaks out.” Mum Tammy added: “When I see his reaction it is like he has an addiction. “We might have to do an intervention, I’m not kidding, because it is like an addict.” But they worry that restricting access to technology risks damaging the future career prospects of their children in an increasingly connected world. Dr Cash, whose centre is a short drive from Microsoft’s home in Redmond in Washington state, said evidence shows people can learn necessary career skills within a year and that tech firms want to employee well-rounded and developed staff. One of those undergoing treatment at reSTART offered some advice to young people. Xander, who has been at the centre for four weeks, said: “Go explore the world. “There is a whole world to see and if you’re staring at a screen it is unhealthy.”

firm ‘cashed in’ on unsafe implants

A director at the company behind hip implants which left thousands of British patients in pain boasted that its sales figures were “on fire” as a result of operations to replace unsafe parts. Internal documents obtained, show that Paul Berman, then in charge of hips marketing at DePuy, bragged that “revisions are fueling our above market growth”. In an email to colleagues in April 2009 he said that the firm should “dominate” the market for revision surgery “in the same way we did the primaries”, or initial hip replacement operations.

Many of the revision operations being carried out at the time in NHS and private hospitals were to replace parts from DePuy metal-on-metal devices, which can leak toxic metal ions into patients’ bodies. The company went on to produce a new metal-on-metal implant five years later. Today, more than 23,000 DePuy metal-on-metal hips have been implanted in UK patients since 2003. Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat health spokesman, described the disclosures as “scandalous”, adding that DePuy appeared to be “making a profit from hiding the truth”.

SurprISIng ThIngS ThaT can affEcT yOur fErTILITy “A 2016 study showed that women who have had their appendix or tonsils removed are likely to be more fertile than others. ” According to new research, soaring house prices in England are reducing the number of babies born, because fewer people can afford their own home and so delay starting a family. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development found that for every 10 per cent rise in house prices, the birth rate drops by 1.3 per cent. With one in seven couples (approximately 3.5 million people) experiencing fertility problems in the UK, and more and more women delaying pregnancy for work or financial reasons, the question of what (beyond age) can impact the chances of conception is a hugely important issue. Research suggests that the reasons behind unexplained infertility are varied, and sometimes, extremely unusual. 1. Night shifts Earlier this year, a study by Harvard University revealed that women who work night shifts are potentially more likely to suffer from infertility problems. Women working anti-social hours had a 28 per cent reduction in eggs, in comparison to those who worked during the day. Researchers believe that this could be due to the disruption of a woman’s circadian rhythm, caused by irregular shift patterns.

Michael Koch disagrees and believes his generation’s tech use is simply a fact of life: “We grew up with phones, we grew up with technology, we are just born with it. “I don’t think I’m addicted.”

2. Heavy lifting The same Harvard study that highlighted the impact of night shifts noticed the same effect on the egg count of women whose jobs involved heavy lifting. According to researchers, women seeking fertility treatment whose work included heavy lifting (such as nurses or interior designers) produced 14% fewer eggs than women who did not, and those that were produced were of a poorer quality. This could be due to the stress such repetitive physical exertion puts on the female body and its ability to reproduce. 3. Consuming too many soft drinks A 2016 study indicated that the frequent consumption of soft drinks could limit a woman’s chance of becoming pregnant. The artificial sweeteners used in many diet versions were associated with higher rates of infertility, while added sugar was linked to a lower quality of eggs. While the impact of individual additives needs further scrutiny, it is key to remember that the regular consumption of both diet and regular soft drinks can lead to obesity and diabetes, both of which can impact fertility. 4. Eating the wrong things (even if you’re not overweight) An unhealthy diet and obesity can reduce a couple’s chances of conceiving. Two American studies showed that a diet high in trans-fats can damage ovaries and cause lower quality embryos, as well

as impacting a couple’s fertility. Fertility problems occur both to those who are overweight and those who aren’t, but who still eat an unhealthy diet. The good news is that 2016 research indicated that losing a relatively small percentage of body weight (in this instance, 9.7lb) can double a woman’s chances of conceiving. Dr Adam Balen, chairman of the British Fertility Society, recommended that women with a high BMI consider restricting calories to 1500 per day, and taking up 35-40 minutes of daily aerobic exercise. 5. A high-pressure work environment Last year a study revealed that women working in finance were significantly less likely to conceive through IVF than teachers. Despite the fact that investment banks have some of the best employee health schemes, the pressure of a stressful work

SOLTIMES GRAPHIC DESIGN WEBSITES SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEO & APPS

environment, combined with volatile markets means that female staff are more likely to skip appointments and forget to take medication. Working in a malecentric environment is also said to have an impact, with teachers and women in PR, sales and marketing (who also have a higher success rate) benefiting from the support of a female environment. 6. Having a partner that sleeps too much (or too little) The male proclivity for a lie-in could have a negative impact on a couple’s chances of conceiving. In a survey of over 700 American couples, it was found that men who slept for longer than 9 hours (or less than 6) per night, reduced their chances of conception by over 40%. This is likely to be due to the release of testosterone overnight.

Ultimate Guide to Metallic Makeup

We’re not all rosy cheeks and red lipstick here at Makeup.com! Just like any beauty experimenter, we like to let our hair down from time to time and show our daring side. And what better way to bring on the edge than by going full force with metallic makeup?! Whether it’s a gold embellishment, silver shadow or gilded lips, heavy metal makeup is wearable (seriously!) and we know just how to get the job done without going overboard on the shimmer. Here’s how you can integrate this fun and futuristic trend into your makeup routine. Metallic Makeup Shades Rose Gold Shades: Because it has both warm and cool qualities, rose gold is one of those colors that happen to work on all skin tones and looks great for every day makeup. Wear it on your lids, lips and cheekbones. You can even dab some on your Cupid’s bow for a fuller-looking pout. Silver Shades: Silver makeup really pops on fair-to-dark skin with cooler undertones! Play up your look by adding it to the inner corners of your eyes or

layering it on over your cat eye. Gold Shades: Gold is the perfect alternative to a traditional smoky eye and works wonders on those with warm undertones. You can lightly dust it on the center of your lips to create a gilded lipstick look or layer it on your lids for a smoldering, nighttime effect! Metallic Makeup Tips & Tricks Start Slow: If you’re not quite ready to dive right into metallic makeup, start off with something simple. Replace your go-to black liner with a pigmented gold or silver one like the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner and just give your upper lid a thin swipe. You’ll be ready to rock more in no time! Apply Primer: Because you want to create a base for the metallic pigments to stick to, start with a creamy primer to keep your look in place all day! We love the NYX Eye Shadow Base. Don’t Go Overboard: Add just a little extra shimmer to your skin.

plain packaging appeal denied All cigarettes sold in the UK must have standardised packaging from next month after the supreme court refused permission to the tobacco industry to appeal against the new laws. This is the final domestic legal decision, meaning that plain packaging of cigarettes will come into force on 20 May, the Department of Health said. Rules requiring tobacco to be packaged in drab, dark brown packs with no graphic branding came into effect in May 2016, with branded packs subsequently being phased out. Tobacco companies went to the supreme court after the court of appeal last November rejected their attempt to prevent the introduction of mandatory plain packaging of cigarettes in the UK. British American Tobacco, Imperial Brands, Japan Tobacco International (JTI) and Philip Morris International claimed that

the law would infringe their human and intellectual property rights.

BOOK REVIEW

By Nathan Filer the authors convey powerfully. Ten years previously, Matthew and his older brother, Simon who was a Down Syndrome child, went on holiday with their parents to a caravan park in Dorset. Children were forbidden from going down to the beach themselves because the path was steep and uneven so it was dangerous. Matthew often did things he wasn’t allowed to do and when he headed towards the beach, Simon followed. Early on in the story, Matthew has a fall followed by an aftershock. “By the time Simon caught up with me, at the twist in the path where exposed roots ensnare unsuspecting ankles-I was wailing like a baby.” Amongst many things, Simon suffered from hypotonia, a weakness in his muscles. He was so worried by the fall that he picked his brother up and carried him all the way back to the caravan.

The big shock for the reader is the start of the next chapter when we are told that Simon is dead. Cruel and sudden. “It was the whole universe turning its back and walking away, incapable of caring.” A second fall that proves to be fatal.

The moon is symbolic of Simon: “He had a big round face, which was forever smiling and made me think of the moon.” Matthew’s delusions amount to seeing and hearing Simon wherever he goes and for this, he is sectioned under the Mental Health Act at the mercy of the NHS. Filer seems vague about the cause of his schizophrenia.Possibly Simon’s death and the guilt surrounding it is one factor although we learn that Nanny Noo’s brother Ernest was put in a mental asylum after a tragic incident that involved Matthew’s grandmother. “Her brother has a disease, an illness with the shape and sound of a snake. It slithers through the branches of our family tree. It must have broken her heart, to know I was next.” Or was it a faulty gene perhaps? Matthew is portrayed in a sensitive way and the reader can expect such perceptive insight into the mind of a young man struggling with mental problems-auditory hallucinations. It is far from depressing and you will find him an interesting character who deserves your sympathy.

His parents are greatly affected by the sudden death, his

he book won the Costa Book Awards in 2014 and was the first debut win since 2006. The main character is Matthew Homes a 19 year old boy suffering from schizophrenia. He has been sectioned and is receiving psychiatric treatment. Matthew is a convincing character suffering a cruel disease, trapped in the ever changing world of mental illness. Comparisons have been made with “The Curious Incident.” Mark Haddon. Both boys suffer pain and confusion which

mother has to take regular medication to deal with her grief, her little yellow pills. Matthew carries the guilt of causing his brother’s death and his life is turned upside down, spiralling out of control. There are rumours that he actually killed Simon. He is heavily medicated, removed from school and has to attend a day centre three days a week. The medical staff present him with a “plan” which maps out his life, when he has therapy, which tablets he should take. His life is repetitive, monotonous with such an imposed regime and what allows Matthew to retain some sanity in his madness is his writing: Where the moon isn’t. It’s his therapy, his life-saver.

It was Matthew who was shouted at for putting his brother in such a horrible position. Matthew was resentful: “It was always me who was responsible for everything, I often resented him.”

now been changed twice to reflect her appearance since she married into the Spanish monarchy 13 years ago. The first figure of the queen consort went on display at the Museo de Cera (Museum of Wax) in Madrid just before she married the then Prince of Asturias. A second version was sculpted in 2008 to reflect the change after the motherof-two underwent a nose job and this week the museum unveiled a third - and insiders say it’s already dividing opinion. Gonzalo Presa, the museum’s communication director, told Ruptly TV that while public feedback had been largely positive, the ‘social media opinion’ had proved more critical. He said: ‘This museum is made to remember the characters that have been, and that are part of the history of Spain. ‘There will be people who like it a lot, and there will be people who do not like it, or do not like it at all.’ ‘We believe that this is the best of all, and it is also in our opinion, the one that best reflects the majesty that the character of Letizia is supposed to have as Queen of Spain.’

ARIES

The mists begin to clear and you start to see what and who was making you unhappy. In fact, the majority of you rams will be putting into place new and improved plans to make your life a better place to be. Be nice to older family members who may well be going through more stress than you’re aware of.

Your weekly horoscopes TAURUS There is a really celebratory feel to your chart which can see you making up for the slow start to the year I see you’ve had to endure. Family are placing unfair pressures on you, but use the voice the stars hand you on Wednesday to say what you will and won’t tolerate or find acceptable. It can put you firmly back in the driving seat.

GEMINI You think there is only one solution to the problem you are facing, but you’re wrong. As you work your way though this week, you realise you have to think outside the box. You also find friends in those you did not know before but who, by the end of this month, will become firm friends for life.

You begin to see a new face from a different angle and their actions over the coming days will dictate whether they stay in your life. You’re so much stronger than you were at the beginning of this year and close ones may even mention this to you. Focus on what you want and you’ll discover you can move mountains.

Your ruling planet the Sun brings out your naughty side and you may think of doing things you would usually go out of your way to avoid. Careful what you say when learning about news of pregnancies or births. It could risk an important relationship if you don’t watch your manners.

A tense atmosphere in your house of family could have seen you saying things which you regret, and which you are unable to take back. Don’t rule out the possibility of making an apology, it could be the olive branch to a better relationship for you and a close one. Financial discussions can go in your favour on Friday if you take control.

Try not to second guess the next move of those you deal with in business, or you could end up looking and feeling the fool. Ensure you complete everything you have promised and don’t put your personal life before your professional life on Wednesday or Friday. You could lose out on making an important crossover otherwise.

The past comes to mind with things you do and people you see. Try to resist getting in contact with those you distanced yourself from for a very good reason. You’ll regret impulsive actions, so sleep on any important decisions. This is a really good week to kick bad habits and to look for a more fulfilling and rewarding way of life.

I know you have not been feeling as strong as you should, but that’s because you’ve been taking on much more than usual. Try to make some time to sit down and work out a better day to day schedule for yourself. Not only will you feel alot better, you’ll also gain the respect of those close to you.

Your element of earth is making it hard for you to get used to the changes which others are pushing on you. Remember that you’re a determined sign who can do anything you set your mind to. Don’t be ruled. Ask for the equality you know you deserve. More equal relationships will evolve in your life if you do my friend.

Try to listen to what your close ones are asking of you. There is a really stubborn streak evolving in you this week, which could see you digging your heels in unnecessarily. Know how far is too for to go when pushing for changes you may not even want by the time this month comes to a close. And you may start to see things in a diffrenet light, over the coming days.

This is a far more rested Pisces I write to than the uptight one of last week. That’s because you’re taking a more realistic view of how things are. You don’t even think about taking on things you know will give you stress or worry. Contact from someone linked to your past stirs mixed emotions within you.

When to Sow Chillies

We mainly sow seeds during February and March, but you can leave it later. There is a great variance in the number of days taken for a particular variety to reach maturity. Some can produce ripe fruit in 60 days from sowing and others take as long as 120 days. Remember that varieties such as Habaneros take 100 or more days (3 1/2 months) from potting on to reach maturity. So these need t o be started in good time or the fruit will never ripen. Chilli Germination We tend to sow seeds about 5mm deep and in small pots, with a number of seeds of the same variety in each pot. Keeping each variety in its own pot is a good idea because germination time varies greatly.

As soon as the majority of the seeds in a pot have emerged and are showing two well formed leaves, and certainly before they become leggy, they should be transferred into 3 inch pots. Hold the seedlings by the leaves, and not the stems. Note that some seedlings may need a little gentle help getting free of the seed pod. If you have the propagator space you can sow directly into 3 inch pots. After Germination At this stage they should be moved to a site where they will get plenty of sunlight; ideally to a heated greenhouse or warm conservatory. Continue to keep them warm, moist and well ventilated. They can stay in a 3” pot until they are 3 to 6 inches high. Potting On Chillies We grow most of our plants in the ground and this is a possibility if you have a polytunnel.

Gardening, isn’t that hard work and reliant on a regular water supply? A Spanish or Mediterranean garden doesn’t have to require regular watering. and xeriscaping have in common is to reduce or eliminate artificial watering once plants are established. A Mediterranean garden blooming among tiles and rocks in a cool shifting shade might bring you just as much pleasure. and save your water bill.

You don’t need to be Spanish, Italian or Greek to enjoy the beauty of Mediterranean gardening. Other parts of the world that also have mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers can take lessons from the many lovely gardens in this Old World region and

its centuries, even millennia, of experience with these conditions. These gardens use plants that are able to store the moisture they need in the winter and survive – even thrive – through the summer without irrigation. What Mediterranean gardening

How to Find a Leak in a Pool or Spa

LOOK FOR SIGNS THAT YOUR POOL HAS A LEAK: Signs that a swimming pool or hot tub is leaking may or may not be obvious. If you suspect a leak, there are proven ways to inspect and detect. there are several methods for detecting leaks in pools and spas. Some are easy do-it-yourself methods, others he suggests consulting a professional. Persistant water-quality issues or algaes that indicate imbalances in the water chemistry, because a leak prevents constant, even levels. Loose tiles or cracks in the pool deck or surrounding area. Loose coping stones. Tree roots can lift the pool deck, plumbing or pool walls. Cracks or gaps in the bond beam. Soggy soil near the pool, spa, pumps or pool plumbing equipment.

THE TESTS: The Evaporation Test In the evaporation test, author Tamminen suggests filling a bucket and placing it on the deck next to the pool or spa. With an indelible pen, mark the level in the bucket and also for the pool or spa. Turn off the circulation. Wait a few days, then mark the new level in the bucket and pool or spa. Both the bucket and pool water should evaporate equally. Leak Detectors and Pressure Testing: Summon the Pros If the other methods fail to help you locate a suspected leak, there are two other methods of leak detection. Unless you’re a plumber, happen to own a geophone or an extreme DIYer, call on the pros. By applying the geophone—an electronic listening device—an operator can actually hear water dripping or flowing. By using the device around a pool and related plumbing, the operator can identify where water is moving out of the system.

Synthetic rattan furniture?

Natural rattan is without doubt one of the most popular materials used in furniture making today. It is an extremely pliable material, so its ideal for forming furniture pieces for the home and garden. It is incredibly strong, has been utilised to make furniture for centuries, it will not splinter, and has excellent durability that can withstand even the most challenging weather conditions. Consumers are now asking themselves if they should purchase natural or synthetic rattan furniture for the garden or conservatory? There’s no obvious weakness to natural rattan, so why is there a

need for a synthetic version? Well the primary reason is cost. Rattan style garden furniture is continuously growing in popularity and manufacturers wanted to achieve the distinctive timeless look and feel of natural rattan at a fraction of the cost. The other big advantage of synthetic or poly rattan is that fact it is not susceptible to mould like the real thing, and it is very easy to clean with just warm water and washing up liquid. Natural rattan does not withstand the outdoor elements particularly well and is vulnerable to the effects of moisture.

Fun Gardening Projects for Kids This spring and summer, make the most of your garden by growing your own fruit and veg. It’s a great way to save some money, get a bit more active and it helps you towards your 5-a-day too! Grow your own fruit There are several fruits you can grow in your own garden, including blueberries and apples - but strawberries are probably the easiest. Once you’ve planted them, they’ll usually keep coming back for a few years. You can

buy strawberry pots and plants from garden centres - they’re best to plant in spring or autumn and will produce fruit in the summer.

and salad veg are all easy to grow yourself because the seeds are big.

Grow your own veg Why stop at fruit? Different types of veg will grow at different times of the year, so if you’re organised, you can have fresh veg all year round. It’s also a great way to get your kids to eat more vegetables - they’ll feel very proud to eat something they’ve grown themselves. Carrots, courgettes, beans, peppers, potatoes

Make your own plant markers You won’t want your gardening projects getting mixed up, so you’ll need to create some handy labels to sit alongside all your plants. You could paint the names onto rocks, scraps of wood, miniature flags made of cocktail sticks and card.

A New Luxury resort on the beach

A leading luxury hotel chain is to open an establishment in Marbella. On Thursday, the W chain signed an agreement with the Platinum Estates investment group, which is developing a project in the area of the sand dunes at Real de Zaragoza, to manage the hotel, which is expected to open in 2021.

There had been rumours that the investment group, based in Singapore, and the hotel chain, one of the most important in the world’s luxury sector, were planning to join forces on an important project, but due to a confidentiality clause, neither party to the agreement wanted to give any details until the deal was signed and the official announcement was made in Hong Kong. The mayor of Marbella, José Bernal Gutiérrez, was at the former British colony for the presentation of this major investment by one of the world’s most exclusive tourism firms. The hotel chain is part of the Starwood-Marriott conglomerate, the two giants of the American hotel industry who merged in September last year. In total W, which is Starwood’s luxury brand, has more than 60 hotels on the five continents. At present the W chain has just one hotel in Spain, the famous ‘candle hotel’ in Barcelona port, and according to its website it will be opening another of the same group in Madrid in June 2019. The new luxury hotel in Marbella will therefore be the chain’s third in this country. W originally planned to announce the plans for this new hotel during the World Travel Market last November, but decided to wait because some delays in planning permission needed to be resolved. Although the hotel will not be in operation until 2021 its beach club will almost undoubtedly open much earlier. The company needs to start its marketing at least two years beforehand, so it has asked Marbella town hall for a guarantee regarding the timescale for granting the works licence, so the construction can begin according to schedule. In recent weeks there has been significant progress in the town planning processes which were still pending at that time, and the developers believe the works licence could be issued by May of next year. This would mean that the first phase of the project could be inaugurated in 2019.

The company, which is part of the Starwood group, made the official announcement about the

Foreign Investors Looking to Invest in Spanish Property

International investors are willing to invest 14,000 million euros in the purchase of real estate assets in Spain over the next twelve months, according to a survey carried out by consultancy firm Knight Frank, among 184 international investors. On the list of the European countries most attractive to investors, Spain has now risen from sixth place to third place. In particular, Spain is currently the preferred country to invest in for 11.6% of the investors surveyed, behind only Germany (23.3%) and the United Kingdom (39.4%). The stabilisation of the eurozone, “signs of improvement in the economy” and the property price adjustments accumulated in Spain since 2008 are, according to the firms interviewed, the main factors encouraging them to include the Spanish market in their investment plans. “Spain is the country that has undertaken the largest correction of prices in the EU, with cuts of up to 65%”, said Knight Frank’s business director, Humphrey White, in a statement. The firm also believes that the Spanish market “is benefited by the very high prices per square metre quoted in all major European cities.” In this sense, more than half of the investors surveyed by Knight Frank indicated that cities like London or Paris have “lost their interest due to the low profitability currently provided, below 4% in many cases”, and are now contemplating operations in other cities such as Madrid or Barcelona to “guarantee the path to higher investment”. The change in trend is also reflected in the profile of the investor, as stakeholders in the Spanish market and not just “hedge funds”, but also large insurers, institutional investors, family offices and endowments. As for the type of asset these investors are seeking, El Economista reported that the office sector remains in first place, along with hotel properties located in Madrid and Barcelona, luxury homes in prime areas and housing packages on the coast providing “great discounts.”

The Ultimate Spring Vegetable Recipes

Raspberry doughnuts

Love Local

Makes six doughnuts and 10 doughballs 300g white bread flour, 7g (1 sachet) fast-action yeast, ¼tsp table salt, 20g caster sugar, 2 eggs, 70ml milk, 60g unsalted butter, softened, 500ml vegetable oil. For the glaze: 150g raspberries, 1 red grapefruit, juiced, 300g ready-made fondant icing. First, make the dough by mixing together the flour, yeast, salt and sugar, then adding the eggs, milk and butter. Knead for five to 10 minutes until you have a smooth, elastic dough, then place in a bowl greased with a little oil and cover. Once the dough has doubled in volume, oil your worksurface and a rolling pin, then roll out the dough to make a rectangle roughly 18cm by 27cm. Use a 9cm round cookie-cutter to cut out six circles and a 3cm cutter to chop out the middle. Carefully transfer the rings and balls to well-oiled trays and cover. Chop up the remaining scraps of dough into more balls, these will be just as tasty, if slightly deformed. Once the dough has again doubled in size, heat the oil to 170C in a large saucepan. Move your tray close to the surface of the oil and, two or three at a time, gently slide in the doughnuts. They should take about 45 seconds on each side to reach a lovely hazelnut colour. Remove from the oil, cool on a wire rack and repeat the process until all the dough is cooked. For the glaze, mash the raspberries, then sieve finely to remove the seeds. Add the grapefruit juice and boil the mix until it has halved in volume. Break up the fondant into small chunks in a bowl and microwave for 20 seconds at a time, pausing to stir – it will quickly thicken – then stir in 60g of the fruit puree. Keep stirring until it’s smooth and glossy To serve, dip the doughnuts in the glaze and garnish with grapefruit zest.

Great Food & Drink

Far from being worthy, a week of chicken suppers feels luxurious – pan-roasted legs with sweet red peppers is worthy of a dinner party; the creamy risotto makes a comforting end to a long day and, with a glass of wine and some buttery greens, the pufftopped, tarragon-flecked pie makes Friday night a special occasion.

The rich flavour goes perfectly with chocolate and creates a delicious cocktail milkshake, perfect for adults. If you leave out the booze this Creme Egg milkshake is a cheap, quick and easy treat come Easter Sunday that the little ones can enjoy for dessert. Top with half a Creme Egg or even grate some chocolate over the top of the foamy whipped cream topping for a posh finish. Chocolate ice cream would work just as well in this recipe as an extra chocolaty milkshake twist.

bones. Reserve the bones and set aside/freeze the meat. Pan-roasted legs with peppers, lemon and thyme Brown the legs in 2 tbsp olive oil until golden. Season and add 4 crushed cloves of garlic and a handful of diced pancetta or chorizo. Deglaze with a squeeze of lemon and half a glass of white wine. Add 4 tbsp water, cover and simmer for 45 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked. Add roasted peppers from a jar, drained and warmed through; add chopped parsley just before serving. Barley minestrone Make stock: place the bones in a pan with 2 chopped carrots, onions and celery sticks. Cover with 2 ltr water and simmer for 1 hour. Remove the bones and reserve 1.5 ltr stock for other dishes. Either leave the vegetables in the remaining broth and mash them, or add fresh vegetables later. Add 2 handfuls of pearl barley and simmer until just tender, adding a little more

water, if necessary. Prepare and cook fresh vegetables, if using – carrot, onion, celery and fennel, all finely sliced, work well: sauté in olive oil, then add to the barley for the last 10 minutes. Season and serve with salsa verde. Mushroom risotto Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a pan and add 1 finely chopped onion. Cook until translucent; add 300g risotto rice and 1 tbsp butter. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes, then

add 150ml white wine and let it bubble, stirring. Slowly add up to 1 ltr hot chicken stock, stirring and waiting until absorbed before adding more. Rehydrate dried ceps in boiling water, or sauté sliced button mushrooms in butter. Add to pan when rice is cooked, plus scraps of shredded chicken, a handful of parsley and 50g butter. Stir, season and serve with parmesan.

Sales of organic food and drink up

Demand for organic food and drink has risen for the fifth year in a row. Annual UK sales were up 7.1 per cent in 2016 to top £2billion for the first time, a report found. Much of the rise was driven by high street chains including Pret a Manger, McDonald’s – which uses organic milk – Nando’s and Jamie’s Italian. Clare McDermott of the Soil Association, which published the figures, said: ‘It’s a positive time for organic as it ticks lots of boxes for consumers. ‘Organic is extremely relevant for trends towards eating better food, knowing where you’re food comes from, avoiding pesticides or antibiotics and ‘free from’ diets. ‘Increasingly, we’re seeing consumers chose organic as a shortcut to a healthy lifestyle and

Miss McDermott said: ‘Organic food is more available than ever. Many high street chains like McDonalds, Jamie’s Italian, Nando’s and Pret are including organic products on their menus. More supermarket chains are offering wider ranges of organic choices and new independent food stores are growing rapidly.’ The Association said Brexit and the fall in the value of the pound could prove to be an enormous boost for British organic producers because it means their output is more affordable overseas. ‘Despite the uncertainty around Brexit for us all, it brings lots of opportunities too – particularly around export for British organic and more product innovation,’ she said. ‘In many countries, British organic

this will continue.’ A study published by the University of Newcastle last year found organic milk and meat had significantly higher levels of beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids. These are linked to a reduced heart disease risk, improved brain development especially in children and supporting the immune system.

is seen as the best that you can possibly buy - particularly in the Far East, US and Europe. ‘Overall, nearly half of Soil Association Certification licensees are exporting products with an estimated value of exports at £250m.’ The Association said the popularity of organic food has triggered a rising interest in organic beauty products.

Spotlight Spanish 5 Marmalade Awards Products and Flavors

There are some very interesting activities shaping up for Spain’s Day, in celebration of Spanish gastronomy, organized thanks to Foods & Wines From Spain. At the Rising Stars Revue event, to be held in Denver on April 25th and organized by StarChefs magazine, more than 700 people are expected to attend, among them consumers, chefs, journalists, VIPs, and other sector professionals. The magazine highlights popular chefs, and the online version even won the “Best of the Web” award from Forbes, US News & World Report, and USA Today. Spanish flavors will be present thanks to the attendance of a chef who will prepare and serve tapas made with Spanish

ingredients available in the US, the goal being to promote their use among professionals. Also in line with efforts to promote Spanish food and wine, seminars will be held at two culinary schools in Colorado: Johnson & Wales University, in Denver, and Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, in Boulder. Both schools will host chefs, who will prepare tapas using typical products such as Sherry vinegar, Ibérico ham, olive oil and cheese. Spanish wines will also be sampled. The objective is to teach future chefs about Spanish ingredients and wines and to encourage them to use those products in their cooking.

The Marmalade Awards and Festival, which was held just last month at the Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, in Penrith, England, saw more than 2,000 homemade marmalades compete for top prizes. The event also included a wide range of exhibitions, shows, talks, and demonstrations. Unsurprisingly, the list of winners was not without a Spanish company. LoRUSSo, a premium artisan marmalade company from Almería, took home a whole slew of honors, including a gold medal for its Lady Bitter Orange marmalade, made with organic

oranges from Seville. It also won silver and bronze medals for its Imperial Mandarin marmalade made with organic mandarins from Valle del Andarax in Almeria. It received a second bronze medal for its artisan sweet orange marmalade and an honorable mention for its Lady Orange marmalade, made with the same organic mandarins. This prestigious competition provided an outstanding opportunity for LoRUSSo to showcase its products, gain exposure, and raise its profile in a market where marmalade is a very popular product.

Halve half the tomatoes, leaving the rest whole, then add to the pan with the wine. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, or until thickened. If it’s too thick, add a splash of water. Peel the prawns, leaving the tails on, then butterfly them by cutting along the back of each one and opening them out like a book. Add to the pan and cook for 4 minutes, or until they’re cooked and pink. Stir through parsley leaves and season. Serve with lemon wedges and nice bread.

When it comes to pet ownership, there are a number of proven health benefits for people, including physical, mental and emotional improvements, from enhancing social skills to decreasing a person’s risk of heart attack. Keep reading to find out five reasons to open your home to a furry friend, and why doing so might be just what the doctor ordered. If the idea of cuddling with a pet to help ward off

allergies seems a little backwards to you, the following may come as a surprise: University of Wisconsin-Madison pediatrician James E. Gern has conducted a number of studies that demonstrate having a pet in the home can actually lower a child’s likelihood of developing related allergies by as much as 33 percent. In fact, his research -- as published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology -shows that children ex-

posed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. While this might not mean much for adults who are already struggling with longstanding allergies, it is good news for families in which this isn’t already an established issue, but rather just a concern about what could happen down the road. One of the fringe benefits of taking on the responsibility of pet ownership is that animals can be an instant icebreaker, whether they’re with you or you’re just using them as a topic of conversation. Of course, few people would suggest getting a pet solely for this purpose, but it’s hard to overlook the fact that pets provide

a great means for improving your socialization skills across the board, especially in terms of meeting and interacting with other pet owners. Though people sometimes may have a hard time getting to know each other, pets can be the common denominator that helps them connect -- even among people who don’t seem to be very much alike. PLACES TO MIX AND MINGLE WITH YOUR PET Training classes: Many instructors offer group classes such as puppy kindergarten, where you’ll find others trying to master the same pet parenting skills. Dog parks: A great opportunity for both you and your dog to play and interact with other dogs and owners alike. Just be sure your dog is properly socialized and up to date on

all shots before introducing it into the mix. Outdoor cafes: Many restaurants with outdoor seating options are also pet-friendly, and some even offer dog-specific items on the menu as well. Online: Dogster.com, Catster. com and Petpop.com are just a few examples of popular pet-focused social networking sites that provide an instant, fun way to trade tips, trends and more.

Explore Portugal

The Lagoon of seven colors Portugal is a friendly, safe country, with a mild climate and an excellent cuisine, ideal to tour with the family. There are numerous activities designed for the little ones, both outdoors and indoors, in castles, museums, zoos, theme parks and aqua parks. Following the footprints of dinosaurs, watching dolphins and whales at sea or learning about the stars are just some ideas of what you can do. Bicycle or donkey rides in natural parks and reserves are also much appreciated and a relaxed way to learn about and discover nature. On the fine sandy beaches, with their calm waters and pleasant temperatures, children can run and play at will, swim and make sandcastles. But the greatest fun of all is to take advantage of the waves and introduce the whole family to surfing. The sea in every shade of blue, almost always calm and warm, and the beaches of fine white sand are the hallmark of the region. The beaches, stretching as far as the eye can see, bound by golden cliffs in small bays nestling between rocks, provide many stunning backdrops for unforgettable holidays. There are around 200 km of coastline that are perfect for all kinds of water sports, including sailing, surfing and windsurfing. Yachting enthusiasts are guaranteed to find great support infrastructures in the modern marinas spread along the Algarve coast. Golf has brought the Algarve many international prizes and awards, and the region has more than once been voted the best golfing destination in the world. The Algarve has about forty courses with excellent conditions for both experienced players and those taking up the sport for the first time. Nature is at its best in three protected areas: the Vicentina Coast which is the best preserved stretch of coast in Europe, the Ria Formosa, a maze of channels separated from the sea by a strip of sand, and the Marshland of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, rich in fauna and flora. But there are also the hills you can discover by bike or on foot, following the footpaths of the Via Algarviana, which connect the eastern end of the region to the westernmost point via the interior, ending at the Rota Vincentina - another set of trails not to be missed for those who like walking. For those seeking a bigger adrenaline rush, there is parasailing, scuba diving, hang gliding or abseiling.

Things to do in Lisbon

The best way to see the city is on foot, walking through its narrow streets lined with white houses, discovering along the way the monuments and details that reveal the history of Évora and its rich heritage. Judging by the calm, welcoming surroundings, one easily sees why this city, which dates from the Roman era, was chosen by the kings of Portugal in the 15th century to serve as their residence, a fact that contributed to its development and cultural importance in the following centuries.

Lisbon is a cosmopolitan city, with good access and a few hours away from any European capital. And there is so much to see and do that it is difficult to have enough time to see everything you want at your leisure... Here we present a selection of things from amongst all those you can do, which cannot be missed in the Portuguese capital. 1. Climb to the Castle of São Jorge and stroll through Alfama. Anyone coming to Lisbon and not going to the Castle of São Jorge will have surely missed an unforgettable moment. It is the highest point in the city, set amongst the most typical of neighbourhoods. A unique opportunity to feel and understand the city’s relationship with the river Tagus. 2. Listen to Fado. Whether or not you like the style of music, dinner by candlelight listening to fado in Lisbon is unmissable. Consider yourself lucky and do stop, if you hear it sung while strolling through some street in Alfama, Mouraria or Madragoa. This style is the so-called fado vadio, or amateur, sung when someone gets the urge to sing. Entertainment is red hot every summer in the many bars and clubs, especially in the most cosmopolitan areas like Albufeira, Portimão and Vilamoura. And throughout the year there are various events that bring colour and fun to the region, such as Carnival, music or food festivals, historical re-enactments and the traditional fairs and festivals which are held all over the region. Food where the spotlight is naturally on fresh fish and seafood, either grilled or in a stew. But there are meat dishes, more common inland, and almond and fig cakes such as morgados or Dom Rodrigos, which go perfectly with the local almond liqueur or arbutus aguardente. Resorts and Spas where you can enjoy some serious relaxation or health and well-being cures which are also available at the thalassotherapy centres and Spa at Monchique. But rest is within everyone’s reach at a variety of resorts and hotels. From the simplest to the most sophisticated, what they all have in common is a genuine pleasure in offering hospitality.

LETS Travel

Summer is by far the best season to visit Berlin. The city’s residents take full advantage of the decent weather to hit the streets, rivers and lakes and partake in endless events across the city. Since the fall of its world-renowned Wall, Berlin has busied itself with becoming one of the most stimulating creative and cultural centres in Europe - one that truly offers something for everyone. Famous as a hub for hedonists and hipsters (parties here can go on for days rather than hours ), it’s also a magnet for history buffs (the city was at the heart of much of the turbulent 20th century) and as a destination for families thanks to a wealth of green spaces such as the sprawling Tiergarten, the vast Grunewald forest in the southwest, and abundant outdoor playgrounds andattractions such as zoos and dedicated children’s museums. Little wonder visitors tend to return to Berlin again and again.

Discover Cornwall One of the UK’s favourite summer destinations, holiday makers flock to Cornwall for its sandy beaches and surf-ready waves but look beyond the coastline and you’ll be rewarded with world-class galleries, fantastic food and many one-of-a-kind attractions. Some secret places for canoeing and kayaking in Cornwall. One of the best ways of getting really close to nature and away from the crowds is to explore the coast, creeks and rivers of Cornwall. The quiet rivers offer wonderful wild corridors through the landscape whilst sea kayaking offers a unique chance to discover secret coves and sea caves. Bosahan Cove & Frenchman’s Creek, Helford. Amongst the many several hidden coves with silver-shale beaches on the Helford Estuary, Bosahan Cove is our favourite. Backed by pretty woods this secluded cove is an easy destination on a kayak and just a mile east of Helford Village on the coast path. Or head a mile west on the coast path and explore remote Frenchman’s Creek, made famous by Daphne du Maurier.

Audi RS5 price and specs

The New RS5 will use a 2.9-litre turbo V6 with 443hp. Weighs 60kg less than its predecessor. Comes as standard with an RSspecific Virtual Cockpit system It’ll go on sale in summer 2017 Audi’s released the replacement for the highperformance RS5 coupe. The new model lends a sportier image and vast reserves of power to the standard A5. It’ll use a new 2.9-litre V6 engine shared with the Porsche Panamera and weighs 60kg less than the old model. This new German muscle car goes up against the likes of the BMW M4 and Mercedes-AMG C63.

Licence Lost, Stolen or Changing Address If a licence is lost, damaged or stolen, or an address changes, the Provincial Road Traffic authority will issue a replacement licence. The replacement licence is issued free of charge in the event of change of address. Traffic Offences and Penalties Spain monitors a driver’s traffic offences with a points system. A diving licence starts with a credit of 12 points in the case of experienced drivers, and 8 during a new driver’s first three years of driving. Two extra points are awarded for three years without offences, to a maximum of 15 points in total. A person caught speeding (for example) loses three points from their licence.

The all-new 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 produces 443hp and much more torque than the last car. The optional dynamic package allows for a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 174mph. On average, the RS5 can return 32.5mpg – a noticeable efficiency gain over the outgoing model thanks to having shed 60kg. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive. Audi also offers the car with adjustable dampers, allowing drivers to switch between a soft ride when driving around town or a stiffer ride for more spirited driving by flicking a few options on

the infotainment system. Other technologies such as the head-up display provide useful information to the driver while allowing them to keep their eyes on the road. Up to 30 driver assistance system help you stay out of trouble while taming this high-performance machine including lane departure, blind spot and collision warning. The RS5 will be available to order in May with the first cars being delivered in the summer. Audi has yet to release official pricing, but expect to pay around £65,000-£70,000 for one of these high-performance monsters – similar to the pricing of the old model.

Dodge Challenger Demon 828bhp monster

“The Demon will do the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds at 140mph, will hit 60mph in 2.3 seconds and also boasts the Guinness World Record for the longest wheelie.”

Dodge has finally revealed the insane Dodge Challenger SRT Demon; a drag strip-orientated, yet still road-legal 828bhp monster. Dodge haven’t been subtle about its talents over an exhausting teaser campaign, but now we can see the car in full, it boasts some pretty impressive figures, including some never attached to a road car

before. At the Demon’s core is the engine, a further upgrade on the already slightly mad Hellcat’s supercharged V8. Sharing the same 6166cc displacement, the Demon has a 2.7-litre supercharger running at a maximum boost pressure of 14.5psi to produce that incredible power figure of 828bhp. Torque is also huge at 770lb ft, giving Dodge the title of worlds most powerful production V8. The supercharger is fed through a charge cooler that uses the Demon’s air conditioning system to reduce the intake temperature and increase its density and therefore power. Dodge claims this can reduce the intake

temperature by 7 degrees. The Demon will also come with a separate power train module that will allow the engine to run on 100 plus octane fuel. A button within the vehicle will allow the driver to switch to an engine map that has been allows it to run on the race fuel. The Demon is designed for racing, drag racing that is. Everything in the car, and what’s been left out, is designed to help improve its quarter mile times. Firstly, the supercharger is preloaded and to increase power at lower revs and the Demon’s launch control is operated via the paddles rather than the brake pedal to reduce reaction times. It also uses Bilstein adaptive suspension tuned specifically to

maximize weight transfer to the rear wheels to improve traction without sacrificing lateral stability. The propshaft and differential housing has been uprated over the item in the Hellcat to deal with more torque and the increased stresses of the new viscious launch procedure. Dodge has revealed that the Demon will be 97.5kg lighter than the Challenger Hellcat, suggesting a total weight of 1795kg. To remove such a significant amount of weight Dodge has removed all the seats, except the one for the one used by the driver; Dodge has taken weight reduction very seriously. Binning the rear bench has saved 25kg while removing the passenger seat has saved a further 26.3kg. Inside the Demon only has two speakers, a manual adjustable steering wheel and far less sound deadening than other Challengers. The extents to remove weight have found their way to the car’s chassis and brakes, too. However, these changes don’t sound quite as appealing.

Alexis Sanchez scores extratime winner

ARSENAL 2 MAN CITY 1 (AET)

Arsenal came from behind at Wembley to beat Manchester City 2-1 in their FA Cup semi-final meeting and set up an all-London final against Chelsea. The entertaining game packed with chances was won in extra-time when Alexis Sanchez blasted in from close range. In normal time Sergio Aguero had put Man City ahead before Nacho Monreal equalised. As it has been so often for Arsenal this season it was Sanchez who found the vital goal. A freekick was sent to the back post by Mesut Ozil and headed back across goal. Danny Welbeck completely miss-hit the ball when he should have scored but thankfully for Arsenal it dropped to Sanchez who took a touch and smashed the ball in from close range.

Alonso will miss the Monaco GP

In slightly bizarre news, Fernando Alonso has decided to miss one of Formula One’s most prestigious events in favour of an entirely different event. The Spaniard will not race for McLaren at Monaco’s famous street circuit in May, instead opting to take part in the Indianapolis 500, a race which takes part on an oval track, and which forms part of motor racing’s so-called Triple Crown – Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24-hour race. Judging by this tweet, we’d say

the two-time F1 world champion is pretty excited. With two retirements in the first two races of the season, Alonso has grown frustrated with the performance of McLaren and their beleaguered engine supplier Honda – his contract with the team is also set to expire at the end of the season. The 35-year-old stated his regret at missing Monaco, but is keen to win the Triple Crown, a feat achieved only by Graham Hill – the fans, it seems, would love to see it. Jenson Button will return

to Formula One to race in the Monaco GP as Fernando Alonso’s stand-in, McLaren-Honda confirmed. Alonso’s unexpected move to compete in next month’s Indianapolis 500 presented McLaren with the opportunity to draft Button back in for F1’s showpiece race, just five months after he quit the sport. The twoyear retirement deal Button signed with McLaren last autumn allowed him to take 2017 off from competition but included the proviso that he could be drafted back in as cover.

THIS WEEK’S ROUND-UP... Fed Cup: GB beaten in Romania

Great Britain have lost their Fed Cup World Cup Group II play-off in Romania, consigning them back to the Europe/Africa Zone. It was 1-1 after Saturday’s play, when host captain Ilie Nastase was banned for swearing at the umpire, Johanna Konta and her captain Anne Keothavong. On Sunday, Simon Halep won 6-1 6-3 against Konta to put Romania in front. Irina-Camelia Begu then beat Heather Watson 6-4 7-5 as Romania took an unassailable lead before the doubles. Konta was left in tears after Nastase’s conduct and, even though the world number seven still beat Sorana Cirstea on Saturday, she found Halep a tougher test. Halep, ranked fifth in the world, raced into a 4-0 lead as she made the most of her clay-court knowhow and broke to love in taking the first set in 27 minutes.

Messi Stuns Madrid

BOWLED OUT FOR 49

Royal Challengers Bangalore were bowled out for 49 by Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday the lowest total in Indian Premier League history. The previous IPL low was 58, scored by Rajasthan Royals against Bangalore in 2009. England paceman Chris Woakes was among the wickets for Kolkata, taking 3-6 in two overs, while no Bangalore batsman reached double figures. The collapse gave Kolkata victory by 82 runs. However, they have won only two of seven games in the IPL and are bottom of the table.

MARQUEZ WINS

Lionel Messi scored his 500th Barcelona goal to send them top of La Liga with an injury-time winner against 10-man Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Barca, whose win put them top because of a better head-tohead record, have five games left, Real have six to play. Casemiro scored first for the hosts before Messi and Ivan Rakitic put Barcelona in front and Sergio Ramos was shown a red card for a wild lunge. Substitute James Rodriguez thought he had earned Madrid a point late on. But Messi, who scored his first with a superb jinking run and finish, fired in from the edge of the area to win it for Barcelona.

Rooney helps to sees off Burnley

Defending MotoGP champion Marc Marquez continued his 100% record at the Grand Prix of the Americas as Maverick Vinales crashed out. Repsol Honda rider Marquez, 24, has now won all five races at the circuit in Austin, Texas. Vinales - who had won the first two races of the season on his Yamaha - crashed on the second lap. His veteran team-mate Valentino Rossi now leads the standings after finishing second, with Dani Pedrosa third.

Wayne Rooney scored his first goal since January as Manchester United kept up the chase for the top four in the Premier League with victory at Burnley. Rooney’s second league start of the year was one of eight changes made by United manager Jose Mourinho after Thursday’s Europa League win over Anderlecht. The England captain started the impressive counter-attack which led to Anthony Martial’s opener, and squeezed the ball home from a tight angle to double United’s lead before half-time. Andre Gray had Burnley’s best chance of the first half when his shot was blocked by defender Eric Bailly, but Sean Dyche’s side failed to register a shot on target. United remain fifth in the league but are only a point off rivals Manchester City, whom they face on Thursday at Etihad Stadium.
