FOR JUSTICE Counties

There’s another turn in the civil case involving Probate Judge Charles K. Mays Sr. On Friday, Mays filed a notice of appeal to the original judgment in the case involving Rodney Scott, a contractor who sued Mays for $10,500 of unpaid work and materials. The trial took place Nov. 5 and Mays had 30 days from the ruling of the trail to file his appeal. The new trial will take place in either the State or Superior Court of Rockdale County. Judge Phyllis R. Williams of DeKalb County Magistrate Court will make that determination since a specific court is not indicated on the notice of appeal filed by Mays.

New Depot Players put on a show you’ll never forget

Rockdale’s top officials answered youths’ questions about racial disparities in policing and government at an extraordinary forum held Dec. 3 at Springfield Baptist Church in the wake of the Ferguson protests. Hundreds—including many young black people—attended the “Redemption Forum” to ask questions about police tactics and racial diversity in government. No specific local complaints emerged, but better communication between cops and kids was a running theme. And some officials acknowledged Conyers’ similarities to Ferguson, pointed out in a recent New York Times article—a metro suburb with a

Turkey Hunt Sigman Road, Parker winner Road widening in works

Expect to see a lot more construction taking place throughout the county next year and in the years to come. During the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners work session Tuesday morning, Rockdale Department of Transportation Director Miguel Valentin presented the board with two agenda items related to road altering projects for Parker and Sigman Road widening projects. Both projects are happening to help relief traffic congestion and create faster alternate routes to get to I-20, says Valentine. The first project discussed was the Phase II portion of the Sigman Road Project, a joint effort by the county and City of Conyers to widen Sigman Road into a four-lane road between Lester Road and Irwin Bridge.

Thanksgiving shooting

A 28-year-old woman was having Thanksgiving dinner at her

friend’s house in Conyers when her estranged husband, Christopher Worley, 29, of Jonesboro, showed up to the property around 11:30 p.m. allegedly intoxicated and began firing off rounds from a handgun into the house. The victim left with Worley because she was afraid for the safety of her friend’s family and neighbors, but faked sickness and had him take her to Rockdale Medical Center. Police arrested Worley at the hospital.

Police warn of phone scam

There’s a new phone scam going around that involves a caller identifying themselves as a police officer, then claiming that the victim missed jury duty and must put money on a Green Dot card, which is like a prepaid card. No legitimate court or department requires people to put money on a prepaid card or to wire money for missing jury duty, say Conyers Police. Targets of these scams are usually the

Development Authority approves Acuity deal By Staff Reports

news@rockdalenews.com

After hours of discussion in executive session and reassurances that all three county commissioners were in support of the deal, the Rockdale County Development Authority voted 5-2 Tuesday to approve the package of tax abatement incentives for Acuity Brands’ previously announced expansion. The Development Authority had previously voiced doubts about the incentives package. The incentives package, offered in August, outlined a full tax abatement, or exemption, for five years on existing and new property and equipment. Over the next five years, that exemption would gradually ramp back, with a 100 percent at year 11. According to a study by Robert Lann Consulting, commissioned by the Development Authority, the incentives would mean a difference of $1.6 million in taxes the county collected over 10 years and a $2 million difference over 20 years. School tax abatement was not included as part of the incentive package. Conyers-Rockdale Economic Development Council Director Marty Jones pointed out that the Acuity expansion with the incentives proposed would have a $950,000 positive impact on Rockdale County Revenues over ten years and the school system would have a positive impact of $2,900,000 over ten years. Development Authority board

members Roland Vaughn and Dr. Stephen Boyle voted against while Gerald Rakestraw, Rick Simons, John Hurt, Ed Cowan, and Mike Sullivan voted in favor of the package. The Development Authority’s main contention was giving abatements to taxes on existing property. Vaughn and Boyle were concerned it set a bad precident. “It’s simple. We’re giving away existing taxes and the taxpayer suffers one way or the other,” said Boyle. “At a time when we’re trying to find money in reserves to pay the budget,” added Vaughn. They said they had not heard of other areas or development authorities granting abatements on existing properties. Rockdale County Chief of Staff Gerald Sanders assured the

Development Authority board all three commissioners were updated and familiar with the terms of the deal and were in support of moving forward on it. “We believe first and foremost a commitment was put on the table. We need to honor our intent,” said Sanders. “Not honoring a commitment that we made... cuts off the spigot, as my grandmother would say, of potential projects.” Gov. Nathan Deal’s office announced in October that Acuity Brands will expand its operation, creating 700 jobs and investing more than $16 million into Rockdale and DeKalb counties over the next five years. The expansion negotiations were carried out through the state’s economic development arm.

BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER By Staff Reports

news@rockdalenews.com

Just in time to learn the true meaning of Christmas, The New Depot Players reprise the holiday misfit favorite, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” Dec. 12-14 at the Rockdale Auditorium This comedic tale follows the trials and tribulations of a church play that casts the town-terrors, the Herdman children, into the central roles in the story of Jesus’s birth. Mayhem and hilarity ensue. “The Herdman children are six of the worst behaved, most devious and utterly demonic children in history,” said Tom Johnson, director of the play and President of the New Depot Players. “They start fights, shoot spitballs, bully every kid at school, smoke cigars in the bathroom (even the girls), vandalize private property and make life miserable for everyone around them.” And yet, it takes The Herdmans to make the community come to grips with the true meaning of Christmas and what loving thy

neighbor is all about. This delightful comedy is adapted from the 1971 best-selling young adult book by Barbara Robinson and has become a holiday staple. For Johnson, “This is a show of ‘firsts.’ And this show, like the other shows I have directed, is built on finding new people to share in my passion. Of the entire cast, only Scott Mills and Lorna Shea have ever performed on stage in a New Depot Players production. That’s a bigger first for me, usually it’s only a few newcomers. And this show is going to be a really great little show. And it will be weird, too. Because my wife, Amy, is performing center stage at OnStage Atlanta and won’t be here for opening night. That’s another first. And the other first is that I get to watch my daughter McKenzie finally find her mark on stage with the New Depot Players.” The show’s cast includes: Bob Bradley (Scott Mills), Grace Bradley (Beth Clark), Beth Bradley (McKenzie Johnson), Charlie Bradley (Sam Clark), Ralph

Herdman (Dustin Freeman), Imogene Herdman (Isabella Rogers), Leroy Herdman (Jacob Vanegas), Claudia Herdman (McKayla McKinney), Olive Herdman (Charlotte Thompson), Gladys Herdman (Lily Rogers), Alice Wendelken (Ally Perkins), Maxine (Megan McKneely), Ellen Hopkins (Kelsey Deleshaw), Hobie (Maddie McKinney), Dena (Tyler Morrison Beverly (Paige Tucker), Stephen (Champion Dent), Dennis (Malik Tucker), Reverend Hopkins (Lorna Shea), Helen Armstrong (Yolanda Adams), Irma Slocum (Lara McKinney), Edna McCarthy (Elizabeth Thompson), Firemen (Rockdale County Firefighters), with special guest performers each show. Crew includes Stage Manager Amy Simerly, Props Manager Willa Kerr, Sound Operator Trini Otero, Lights operator Tyson White. There’s a limited run, so make sure to get your tickets before they’re sold out. The show is onstage at the Rockdale Auditorium, 903 Main Street, on Friday,

Dec. 12, and Saturday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens age 60 and over and for students with a valid ID. To purchase tickets or for more information on upcoming production, go to thenewdepotplayers.com.

Auditions for the next New Depot Players production will be held Dec. 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. for roles in The Diviners, by Jim Leonard Jr. and directed by Jay Tryall. Actors are needed for six male roles and five female roles. Performances will run Feb. 26-March 8.

Our Thoughts Leadership A couple of weeks ago Board of Commissioners Chairman Richard Oden publically chastised the head of the Conyers-Rockdale Economic Development Council Marty Jones. The chastisement was so far out of line in this public display of non-leadership that even his closest allies shuddered. In our Nov. 26 Wednesday digital newspaper we called Oden a political bully for his actions and suggested that he publically apologize to Jones and the CREDC board; as of yet, he has not. Many local residents who weren’t at that Nov. 18 public meeting looked to their public television station, Channel 23, and to the county’s website and Vimeo channel, vimeo. com/Rockdale, to catch up. The county’s Community Affairs department typically does a good job in posting public county meetings within a short time after the meetings. The first three hours of the budget meeting were posted on the county’s website and Vimeo channel. But surprise, surprise – for some strange reason the last two hours, where Oden’s display of rudeness to Jones occurred, are missing from the county website. They are also missing from the Vimeo channel. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody. A few years ago the station became the Richard Oden show and nothing appears on it that he doesn’t approve of. Only a small link on Vimeo connects to a separate website where viewers can find the missing footage. The Community Affairs director says the issue is file size; but one can see there have been longer meetings posted on the Vimeo channel before. As a result of this footage that is missing from the county’s main avenues we not only think that Chairman Oden is a political bully, but is lacking in courage for not owning up to his tirade. The Chairman still owes Jones, the CREDC board and the community an apology. If you did not see the chairman’s loss of control, we are glad to bring it to you. You can see video of the exchange during the Nov. 18 budget hearing for yourself on our website, www.rockdalenews.com. *Disclosure: A member of the editorial board sits on the CREDC board.

A Word from the Sheriff

It is hard to believe that the holiday season is already here and that 2014 is almost over. With my second year in office almost complete, I want to thank the citizens of Rockdale County for their continued support. I think that everyone can see the Eric J. great strides Levett that the RockSheriff of dale County Rockdale Sheriff’s Office County has made in my first two years as Sheriff and want to assure everyone that we are always seeking to get better. During my first year in office, I implemented several initiatives with the ultimate goal of crime reduction and making Rockdale County safer. By laying the groundwork in 2013, we have seen those efforts pay off in 2014. The RCSO is cur-

rently on pace to achieve more than a 20 percent reduction in total Part I crimes. By looking at specific crimes categories, I sought to drastically reduce burglary crimes and we are currently projecting more than a 40 percent reduction. In addition, we stand to realize an approximate 30 percent reduction in robbery and assault crimes. These drastic reductions can be attributed to the hard working men and women of the RCSO, as well as the RCSO working with the community to be able to apprehend these individuals that have nothing better to do than to commit crime in our county. We have proven time and time again that the RCSO and citizens of Rockdale County will not stand for it. With the holiday season here, I want to offer the following crime prevention tips so that your holiday season will not be dampened by being the victim of a crime: 1) Always park your car in a

well-lit and well-traveled area. Scan the area before exiting your car. Do not park in a remote dark area. 2) Do not leave anything valuable in plain view in your car. 3) While shopping, always keep your purse with you. Do not leave it in your shopping cart. Ensure your purse is snapped or zipped and is not open. 4) When you return to your vehicle, scan the interior of your car to be sure no one is hiding inside. Check to see if you are being followed. 5) Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. You should be ready to unlock the door as soon as you get to your car and not have to be fumbling and looking for your keys. 6) When storing items purchased at the stores, place them out of sight. The best place is in a locked trunk. 7) Lock your vehicle and put up your windows even while you are driving.

8) If you go to an ATM for cash, check for people around and make sure it is well lit and in a safe location. 9) Carry only the credit cards you need and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. 10) Beware of the “a good deal” scams. Things are not always what they appear. 11) Arranging to meet someone as a result of an online purchase from a website should be arranged with caution. 12) Drive defensively. Traffic is heavier during the holidays. Exercise patience while in traffic and while driving. 13) Always report suspicious persons, sounds, vehicles, and activity by calling 911. The RCSO hopes that these tips will be helpful during the holiday season and that you will share the information with friends, family and loved ones. On behalf of the men and women of the RCSO, we hope that you have a safe and happy holiday season.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

What is ‘reasonable belief’ in Officer Wilson, Michael Brown case Dear Editor: I am starting to get mad with people who want to move after the fact that our young black men are being murdered. Negative protest is in my opinion completely out of order. We should not be disrespectful no matter what color we are. There are a lot of things that are out of sync with this case. First of all we need to teach our young black men how to follow the verbal commands of law enforcement officers. We must teach them how to effectively handle themselves when encountering police officers who train to kill and not slow down an assailant. I have been wronged by the police while employed and certified as a police officer. Second as a former police officer that was trained to kill when handling my service weapon, I also was taught to serve and protect the public. I do have a problem with Officer Wilson’s continued actions in pursuing Michael Brown. By all means everyone has the right to defend themselves in self-defense. Here is what everyone is missing including Law Enforcement Officers. So what information does a victim use to determine if he has a “reasonable belief” that he will be seriously hurt or killed? Most self-defense trainers and legal scholars use a three-pronged test: Ability, Opportunity, and Jeopardy. Ability - Can the attacker physically do enough damage to rise to the level of

serious injury or death? An unarmed 4-year old would not likely have the ability to kill you, therefore it would be unreasonable to shoot the little kid in self-defense. Often the term “ability” in the context of a self defense situation means “Is the attacker armed with a deadly weapon” or “Is the attacker capable of seriously injuring me with just his hands or feet?” If the answer to those questions is no, then it is unreasonable to shoot. If the answer is yes, you move on to the next criterion. Opportunity - Does the attacker have the opportunity to seriously injure or kill me? This is often focused on proximity. If a person is threatening you with a knife from 50 feet away, he has the ability to kill you; but not the opportunity. He’s out of range. Obviously, opportunity depends on the weapon being used against you and your immediate environment. If the attacker has the ability (is armed) and the opportunity (is within range to use the weapon effectively) to kill you, then we move on to the next prong of the decision tree. Jeopardy - Just because a person is armed and has an opportunity to kill you doesn’t mean that you are in any true danger. Take the example of a uniformed police officer walking past you on a sidewalk. The officer has the ability (a

gun) and opportunity (is within range) to kill you, but unless you present a threat to the officer, you are in no jeopardy. He isn’t going to shoot you even though he is capable of doing so. Another way to look at jeopardy is by defining it as “intent”. Does the attacker intend to seriously hurt or kill you? If not, it isn’t reasonable to shoot. All three criteria must be met in order to legally establish that it was “objectively reasonable” to use deadly force. Officer Wilson was wrong to continue in pursuit of Michael Brown which caused him to feel that he was doing his job which in my opinion was overboard with fear and heightened aggression. This not about black or white, it’s about respect of each other’s life. Pastor Anthony Smith of Nehemiah Empowerment Group Ministries, Inc.

More than 200 senior citizens had a brighter Thanksgiving thanks to the donation of turkeys from Commissioner Oz Nesbitt and the community on Nov. 23. Despite inclement weather, hundreds waited in the rain for the donation outside the Olivia Haydel Senior Services Center on Dogwood Drive. More turkeys were also hand delivered by Nesbitt and volunteer Gerri Byrd to senior citizens who were shut in their homes and not able to leave or travel. One Heart Ministries, located at 1377 Old McDonough Highway off Iris Drive near Ga. Hwy 138, had served as the drop-off location for turkeys donated from the community. “It was made clear to me with the number of people that turned out to receive turkeys that there were a number of people that need assistance,” said Nesbitt. “It’s that demographic that typically won’t tell you their need. They’re the last group to ask, they don’t want to bother anybody. Once upon a time in their lives, they were able to provide their own turkey. Most seniors live on a fixed income.” He added, “I think the most refreshing thing for me is assisting people who genuinely appreciate the gift. There’s nothing more satisfying than helping someone who appreciates the help. It makes giving so much more worthwhile.”

A Purple Heart for ‘Mama Bear’ August 7, 2013: Forward Operating Base (FOB) Shank, Logar Province in Afghanistan. She remembers a ‘thump’ PETE MECCA followed by COLUMNIST the sensation of a big hand picking up her body then squeezing the breath from her lungs. Hurled through the air, her body smashes against a blast wall, called an Alaska Wall by the U.S. Military. A water truck packed with 3,000 lbs. of explosives had just detonated ‘inside the wire.’ Major Patty “Mama Bear” Justice lies wounded and motionless, another casualty of another suicidal terrorist attack. She is 49 years old. During WWII her father worked on the secretive Manhattan Project to help develop the atomic bomb that ended the war. By the time Patty was born, her father was vice-president of a steel company in Mexico City. She recalled, “When we moved back to the states I was 8 years old, bilingual and with dual-citizenship. I didn’t lose dual-citizenship until I took the oath as an officer in the U.S. military.” After high school Patty attended the New Mexico Military Institute with high hopes of an Army military career upon graduation. An incident in advanced boot camp spoiled the dream. “I ruined my knee,” she said. “That terminated my ROTC scholarship so I transferred to Mount Saint Mary’s, an all-girl Catholic school in California. After graduation I later worked in defensive contracting

until moving to Peachtree City, GA in 1989. I met a great guy, we got hitched, and I decided on a career in nursing. First I attended Gordon College before receiving my nursing degree from Brenau University. I worked at Piedmont Hospital for 11 years, until the Twin Towers fell.” Patty received a card in the mail explaining a need for qualified nurses in the military. She said, “I thought, ‘shoot, I’ll try again,’ and I took a chance on being accepted.” At 40 years of age, Patty Justice received a direct commission into the US Army. “I didn’t even have to wear the butter bars of a 2nd Lt.,” she said, grinning. “I was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant.” Patty was assigned to the 3297th out of Fort Gordon, GA after attending an officer basic course at Fort Sam Houston, TX. The battalion moved to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio as the campaign in Iraq heated up. Patty said, “I was there for 18 months. We were the last in a chain of care spectrums. Casualties were flown in from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany into Brooke for the completion of their treatment before going to a VA hospital nearest their hometown.” During this time the 3297th was disbanded to become the 3274th then reorganized a second time as the 75th Combat Support Hospital out of Tuscaloosa. Patty returned to Piedmont Hospital after completing her assignment at Brooke. She recalled, “Boy, talk about going back to slow motion. It was like being demoted from the big league back to the little league. Piedmont is a great hospital, but a military hos-

pital moves at a more industrious tempo. They expect more.” To expand her knowledge as an officer, Patty joined a civil affairs outfit in Dallas, TX for 2 years. “Those 2 years gave me a better rounded background and bestowed really great training,” she said. Patty would need all the training for her future deployment. Up for a promotion to Major without slots available, she received a call from the 228th Combat Support Hospital in San Antonio. Their offer was unembellished: promotion to Major if she’d accept deployment to the 628th Forward Surgical Team hunkered down at an isolated location in Afghanistan called FOB Shank, better known as Rocket City. Patty accepted the promotion, and the challenge. Soon nicknamed “Mama Bear” by her colleagues, Major Patty Justice was going to war. From September of 2012 to September of 2013, she would reside in ‘Rocket City.’ FOB Shank, Afghanistan: “Well, it reminded me of the movie MASH; we lived in tents, no real roads, just about everything brought in by air, and that included the wounded and dying. We stayed busy and learned a lot about different cultures, the Afghans and Nepalese. Afghan men in the villages could not understand a woman in uniform, packing a .45 automatic, and so bold as to look them in the eye. They just couldn’t comprehend that.” “Mama Bear” kept count of the action. She recalled, “We got hit 278 times during my tour, mainly in the mornings, into the afternoon, but not very often at night. Even though we were ‘blacked-

Darrell Everidge/The News

out’ at night, I had the impression many of the enemy fighters were basically lazy, like, ‘It’s time for bed, see you in the morning.’ Our south side base did get hit at night so I guess it depended on which area had less lazy fighters. Anyway, we received mortars, RPGs, and sniper fire on a regular basis.” Her comments on the base medical field facility: “They did a great job considering we only had 14 people. We were on call 24/7, no shift work because the shifts depended on casualties. A 72 hour shift was nothing for us, yet the next time we’d only work 4 hours. We saw and treated a minimum of 1,100 patients. These were not minor injuries. We dealt with the results of IEDs and combat, severed limbs; people absolutely blown away. During the fall and winter we mainly took care of Afghan soldiers, except for the American

soldiers hit by sniper fire or suffering from frost bite or hypothermia. It was horribly cold during the winter. But then the ‘killing season’ began, May through December, and the American casualties really picked up.” When discussing American soldiers, she stated, “Those guys are good, resilient, and do what they are told. The average age of a soldier was about 20, our field surgical team about 25, and there I am a 49 year old “Mama Bear” fussin’ over our boys.” August 7, 2013 - “Our small medical facility and living quarters were no more than a 30 second walk from ‘the wire’. We lived close to where we worked because we had to respond quickly for the medevac flights, coming in and going out. That night we were hit

by mortars and had to attend an after action meeting in the morning. I forgot something and had to return to the tent which put me outside the protective wall. Suddenly, ‘Boom’, and that’s all I remembered.” The ‘boom’ was a water truck. The water truck was stolen a couple of months prior to the explosion. The two truck drivers were beheaded. During the interim, insurgents jam-packed the truck with 3,000 lbs. of military explosives, slipped through an Afghan checkpoint two months later, and detonated the truck and themselves. The explosion created a 75 foot gap in the protective wire. Patty regained consciousness 45 minutes later strapped to a stretcher, dazed and in pain. She recalled, “The base was home to an American Mountain Division, Rangers, and special forces guys. Some of the men had just returned from night combat duties and were sacked out when the truck exploded. Those guys didn’t hesitate. They grabbed their weapons and gear and hit the perimeter to ward off any ground attack, in their underwear. Luckily, there wasn’t a ground attack.” Major Patty “Mama Bear” Justice’s shoulder was dislocated as was her hip. Her ears rung like church bells and continued ringing for weeks to come, plus, as later discovered, she received moderate TBI (traumatic brain injury). Flown via medevac chopper to Bagram Air Base, along with a trauma surgeon suffering from shrapnel wounds, her next portof-call for proper healing should have been Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. “No way,” Patty said. “After a few days I told them I was just fine, my fingers and toes worked okay, my trigger finger still functioned, and I’m ready to go back to FOB Shank.” When they asked about the terrible ringing in her ears, she replied, “No ringing whatsoever.” Major Patty Justice was lying through her “Mama Bear” teeth. But her whopper worked; she returned to Rocket City to work alongside her colleagues and completed her tour. One month later, Patty rotated home with her unit. More than qualified, combat veteran nurse Patty Justice found quick employment at the Atlanta Medical Center Trauma Unit, plus has had additional corrective surgery on her shoulder. Now the fog of military paper-shuffling reared its ludicrous head when Patty received several emails from Bagram Air Base inquiring about her Purple Heart. She’d never received a Purple Heart, always wondered why, and contacted a close friend, the

Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014 • 11 deputy chief nursing officer she served with in Afghanistan. Patty said, “He was fit to be tied when he heard about the screwup.” Through his and Patty’s persistence, the truth was finally exposed. The unprocessed paperwork for seventeen individual Purple Heart recipients had been discovered in a desk at Bagram Air Base, including Patty’s. She stated, “Shoot, I was thinking about going to Fort Benning to purchase my own Purple Heart!” No, ma’am, that’s not the way it’s going to happen. Major Patty

C. Justice will be presented her Purple Heart on Friday, December 5, at 1 p.m. at the Walk of Heroes War Memorial at Black Shoals Park in Rockdale County, Georgia by the Georgia Department, Military Order of the Purple Heart & Chapter 465. The public is invited. Well done, “Mama Bear,” well done. Pete Mecca is a Vietnam veteran, columnist and freelance writer. You can reach him at aveteransstory@gmail.com or aveteransstory.us.

Clash of the counties

Controlling the tempo By Shakeem Holloway

sholloway@rockdalenews.com

Like Heritage/Newton, Salem/Newton is a rival game projected to have a large attendance of fans from both counties. With the looming anticipation of the game on her mind and knowing the thoughts her players might have, Lady ‘Noles coach Rochone Dilligard has prepared her team to contain their emotions. Dilligard says containing those high emotions and sticking to their gameplan will be key if Salem intends to get a victory. “It is a rival game because of a lot of their kids and our kids know each other. It will be a big game in their minds but we just gotta stay focused on what we’re supposed to do and just stay with that for four quarters,” Dilligard said. At 2-2, facing a 3-1 Newton team, the Lady ‘Noles are not where you’d peg a team that reached the elite eight last year to be. Their struggles, Dilligard says, are

sometimes what teams need to prepare for the real challenge, which is winning region. The Lady ‘Noles suffered two straight losses, one in blowout fashion (69-43 against Norcross), after handedly defeating Alcovy. Salem recovered on Tuesday, defeating Winder-Barrow 47-46 led by Paris Scott and Shay Tarver as they each scored 12 points. “All of our players have stepped up in the recent week,” Dilligard said. “We’ve got a bunch of seniors. We’re a very senior-driven team. I have seven seniors: Saaliyah Green, Rosie Kyles, Shay Tarver, Paris Scott...Makayla Whitfield. Those are kids that’ll be out on the floor. The roles are different for each one of them, but each one of their roles are very, very important. So, those will be a lot of the keys to us being successful.” Three other keys to success for Dilligard’s team are: taking care of the ball, defending without fouling and controlling

the tempo of the game. “We’re gonna be patient and do what we do,” Dilligard said. “We’re not going to let them dictate the pace of the game. If we stay within ourselves and make sure we’re doing what we’re supposed to do, offensively as well as defensively then as long as we can control the tempo I think we’ll have a better shot at getting the outcome that we’re looking for.” “Even if that (means) increasing the tempo,” Dilligard added. “A lot of people think controlling the tempo means slowing it down, but we actually like to increase the tempo and make the other team play faster than they’re used to playing.” Newton is a good team defensively, and uses the fast break to score most of its points. However, the Rams do have a couple of shot makers that can cause problems for Salem on defense. Salem will host Newton at 4:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

Noles take on Newton

By Shakeem Holloway

sholloway@rockdalenews.com

Two teams with two very good records. One team has an unshakable system that’s been in place for years. The other team has the size to compete with the best teams in the state. Newton, the former, versus Salem, the latter will prove which team is legit. Newton and Salem have a combined record of 8-1, with Salem being 4-1 and Newton at an undefeated 4-0. While Newton’s dominated pretty much all of its competition, winning every game by double digits. Salem, on the other hand, has been on the brink of falling apart twice already this season. The Seminoles were able to escape with victories over Brookwood (48-47) and Central Gwinnett (54-52) in the Archer Thanksgiving tournament. Salem’s lone loss, an 87-59 loss, came against Butler, a team Newton beat 73-34 in an exhibition match prior to the season. Salem head coach Noah Harrell’s concerns all season have been about his team not committing turnovers and beating themselves.

Harrell says the way Newton is able to turn the other team’s mistakes into gains for themselves is his biggest concern other than their shooting ability. Harrell says he talks to his team about not committing turnovers every day. “It’s a point of emphasis for us,” Harrell said. “We can’t beat ourselves by giving them extra opportunities whether through turnovers or through extra shots. We really have to limit them and not let our mistakes beat us and help them.” Another emphasis for Harrell and his team is using their size as an advantage, something they struggled with against Newton last year. “We really gotta be able to exploit that and use that to our advantage. Last year we had a size advantage against them and we didn’t,” Harrell said. “One of the things that we’ve been harping on in terms of talking about us is playing to our strengths. We have that size that we can definitely use to our advantage.” “Offensively we want to be able to play to our strengths. We’ve got to be able to use what has been working for us

and be able to use some of our size to our advantage,” Harrell said. “Defensively they’re going to be tough to stop. They run their system, we just gotta make sure that when they make mistakes or miss shots we gotta make sure they don’t get second chances on them.” Newton’s D.J. Hill is playing lights out so far this season. Hill posted a career-high 21 points to go along with seven assists on Tuesday. Harrell says it starts and ends with Hill. “He really runs everything and sets everything up and gets open looks for their two shooters, [Darvin] Jones and [Jaquan Simms],” Harrell said. On defense, Salem plans to limit Newton’s possessions, but Harrell says on offense it begins with the backcourt. “It starts with our guards, Michael Green and Jarrett Cook taking care of the ball and then Chandler Davis and our other post-players taking advantage of their size,” Harrell said. The Seminoles tip-off against Newton Saturday evening at 6 p.m. at Salem.

JUDGE

From FRONT PAGE

Williams was sitting in for Rockdale’s Magistrate Court judges, who recused themselves because the matter involved a judge sitting in the same circuit. In the original judgment, Scott, who was not represented by an attorney, was awarded a little under $10,000 and termination of the lease purchase contract between Scott and the Mays Family trust, as Scott requested. In June and July, Scott had been brought on board by Judge Charles K. Mays, who has a home repair and contracting business, to repair the condominium, which Scott described as not being in livable condition. Scott expressed interest in buying the condominium, he said, as a way to help the Mays family who were behind on their payments for the condominium and because he needed a more permanent home; at the time he was living with his daughter and her children. Scott thought he was buying a home from Mays and had put about $10,500 worth of renovations into the condominium, where he currently lives. He said there had been a verbal agreement between Mays and himself that Mays would cover the cost of the repairs. Scott said he also made two down payments of $1,500 and one payment of $1,000 to the Mays family, with no receipts. Mays and DJ Asante, who represented himself as a trustee of the Mays Family Trust, contended there had been no evidence given to them of the work and no receipts turned in for the work, besides receipts for parts of an electrical panel Scott had repaired by a certified electrician. Asante said when he tried to

ask for the receipts and to go onto the property, Scott became “belligerent,” refusing to talk with Asante and wanting to talk with Judge Mays. Scott later testified that he had talked over the phone with Mays and attempted to arrange a way to submit the totals, either by phone

or in person, but was turned down. Scott said he had recorded the phone conversation with Mays. Scott was ordered to pay the October and November rent and move out of the condominium at the end of 30 days, at the end of November.

FERGUSON From FRONT PAGE

tice when there is a perception of injustice,” he said to sounds of approval from the audience. Richard Autry, superintendent of Rockdale County Public Schools, indicated that stereotyping affects the respect and expectations placed on children—and that he has had a taste of that himself. “With regards to education, there are hard truths,” Autry said. “There is an issue of expectation, particularly when it comes to children of color,” as well as kids from lower-income families, he said. “Just because, pastor, I grew up in the mill village didn’t mean I didn’t deserve the same level of respect and the same level of opportunities as anyone else,” he said. Different opinions were voiced about how youths should express themselves to authority figures. Church member Rocky Sam said youths need to learn to speak respectfully and clearly, but unlike earlier generations, are unwilling to be “subservient…or do the quote-unquote shuck and jive thing, as I’ve heard them say before.” “If you respect somebody,

that’s not shucking and jiving. It’s not,” objected Councilman Stroud. “We need to teach our young people to respect adults and people in authority,” he said, adding that if that happens, “this problem we’re talking about now will just disappear.” Autry said listening to young people, not just talking at them, is crucial. “We have to engage in that dialogue. To oppress or overreact…is a mistaken,” he said. “We need to listen to our young people more, not less.” “In our generation, young people were to be seen and not heard. This generation will not stand for that,” Autry added. Chief Wilson and other police officials answered many questions about police procedures and use of force. Much of it comes down to officer training, they said, while adding that tight budgets can make that difficult. Chief Stacey Cotton of the Covington Police Department said there is a “training deficit,” with the state

of Georgia requiring only 11 weeks of training for someone to become a police officer— one of the lowest requirements in the nation. Rockdale Sheriff Eric Levett addressed the controversial use of military vehicles and weapons by police. “If we can get away from that word ‘militarization,’ we’d be better off,” he said, describing such gear as being used for protecting citizens. But, he added, military hardware needs to be purchased with “common sense,” transparency and actual need. “We’re not out here looking to get tanks,” he said. Mayor Mills was among officials agreeing with some audience members that more such forums would be good. Rev. Lee said that while not everyone will agree with that night’s answers, “I think we can agree that our leaders are not our enemies. These are relationships that need to be strengthened in order for Fergusons to stop happening.”

majority-white government and police force while the population shifts to majority-black. They differed, however, on how much racial diversity in leadership matters. “Tonight, we want our young people to know they have a voice,” said church pastor Rev. Eric Wendell Lee, calling for Rockdale and Newton to face “hard truths,” including a “culture of suspicion” that falls on black youths. Conyers Police Chief Gene Wilson said he has heard concerns about racial diversity in the police force. “That’s important, but I tell you what’s more important is a good heart,” he said, explaining that his message to his officers is, “Treat people the way you want to be treated.” Asked about training cops to speak respectfully to black teens, Wilson said that “progressive” departments do so. They also teach “verbal judo” methods to have “conversation, not confrontation,” he said—a phrase that was picked up as a theme of the event. Conyers Mayor Randy Mills and Councilman Cleveland Stroud spoke about the New York Times article, which noted a city election turnout of less than 10 percent, and indicated a disconnection between government and most citizens. Mills, who is white, said he and county Chairman Richard Oden, who is black, both “represent anyone,” regardless of race. “Why there was (a low) turnout, I do not know,” Mills said, adding, “I do not believe there is a disconnect” in terms of city government representing citizens’ best interests. “Having been the first black

man elected in Rockdale County, there was a lot of pressure,” said Stroud, adding that council members do not have to black to represent blacks, or white to represent whites. “We’re representing everybody, whether they voted or didn’t vote. We’re trying to do the right thing without reference to race.” As for the very low election turnout, Stroud said, “You can look at it two ways: People don’t care, or people are satisfied with what they have.” Rockdale District Attorney Richard Read said a recent trip coincidentally put him within driving range of Ferguson, so he went there and spent two hours touring the city and talking to residents. “One thing that struck me as I stood in Ferguson, Missouri, was how much it was like Conyers, Georgia,” Read said, describing the people, the look and the atmosphere as similar. Read answered questions about how grand juries work— in Rockdale, they’re about 55 percent white, 45 percent black—and that justice and respect are his office’s guiding principles. “There can be no jus-
