Serving Rockdale County and Conyers
Welcome to the
world! From Silas
Proud parents Neri and Pablo Reyes-Sanchez of Covington welcomed their son Imanol a little past 9:30 a.m. on January 1, 2015 at Rockdale Medical Center’s The Birth Place. Imanol’s due date was actually Sunday, Jan. 5, but baby Imanol had other plans and made a New Year’s day grand entrance into the world, weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces, and measuring 17 inches long. The birth occurred quickly with no complications; his mother Neri checked into the hospital around 8:30 a.m. and about an hour later, the baby was delivered under the guidance of Dr. Naomi Harris. Pablo, 26, a recycling center employee, and Neri, 24, a homemaker, named the baby after Pablo’s father; Imanol is the fourth child for the couple who have an 8-year-old son Leonardo, 6-year-old daughter Melanie, and 2-yearold son Giancarlos, who was also born at Rockdale Medical Center.

RESCUING RECORDS Clerk of Courts plans to preserve county records digitally By Martin Rand, III
mrand@rockdalenews.com
One of Rockdale County’s most precious historical treasures is in danger of being lost forever. The county’s records for its first 100 years of existence are deteriorating rapidly with age and Rockdale County Clerk of Courts Ruth Wilson is attempting to preserve them. Her plan is to preserve the old records through a preservation process and then store the restored books in a climate controlled building. She also wants to make digital copies of the records so the public can access them online. “You can really understand a lot about a community by looking at these records,” said Wilson. “This is irreplaceable.” Right now, the majority of the county’s records are housed in the Real Estate room of the Rockdale County Courthouse, 922 Court Street, Conyers, but Wilson claims this room and the building in general is no place to keep the county records. “The books are vulnerable just because they are sitting here. Anybody can walk out with it, tear it, write on it, whatever,” she said. “So we’re trying to protect these records. There will still be some paper records in here, but for the most part we’re going to go digital.” The majority of the county’s property and criminal and civil court records have a digitized version. In total there are 4,200 county record books, with only 145 still awaiting digitization and 230 currently in the process.

Rockdale ranks 11th healthiest Ga. county By Martin Rand III
mrand@rockdalenews.com
Overall, Rockdale is a fairly health community. According to the 2014 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, Rockdale is ranked 11th in overall health, or health outcomes, when compared to the other 158 Georgia counties. The length of life and quality of life of the community contribute to the health outcomes. Rockdale’s figures for this category, which include premature deaths, low birth weight, poor or fair health, poor physical health days and poor mental health days, are all below the state average. However, in the health factors category, which can have a direct effect the health outcomes,
Rockdale’s ranking drops to 38th among counties. Health factors are broken into four sub-categories which are health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors and physical environment. Kate Conkle, community coach for the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, says that the health factors are broken up that way because there are a assortment of things that can influence the health of the community. “We do that because we know it’s not just one thing that makes us healthy,” said Conkle. “There’s a variety of factors.” She also adds that the rankings should be like at as neither negative nor positive, but should serve as a good starting point to
tell people how health the community is. Out of the two, the more important category to look at is the health factors. “Communities should focus on health factors,” said Conkle. “By making changings here, you can have a significant impact on the health of the community.” The University of Wisconsin-Madison collected the data in the report from other resources, like the Center for Disease Control and the U.S. Census. Since 2010, the school has compiled data ranking all counties in every state in the country. The report was also referenced by the Rockdale Health Department in the 2014 Community Health Assessment report published in earlier this year.
According to the report, Rockdale has six areas that either should be focused on when trying to improve the health factors. • Adult Obesity: Approximately 33 percent of Rockdale’s adult population is overweight, which is five percent higher than the state and eight percent higher than the national average. • Food Environment Index: This indicator calculates the health of the food environment. It includes both the community and consumer nutrition environments as well as access to food in terms of the distance the average consumer travels to a grocery store or supermarket. Graded on a scale of one to 10, with one being the worst, Rockdale’s index number is 6.1. It’s below the state’s index of 6.8 and drastically below the national index of 8.7. • Uninsured: The percentage of adults under the age of 65 without health insurance is about 23 percent. It’s only one percent higher than the state, but 12 percent higher than the nation average. • High School Graduation: The rate of ninth-graders graduating in four years in Rockdale is estimated to be 66 percent. It’s only two percent below the state average. • Sexually transmitted infections: This calculated the rate of a chlamydia incidence per 100,000 population. Rockdale’s rate is 770 per 100,000 population. That rate is more than 200 cases per population compared to the state and nearly 650 cases per population higher than the nation rate.

Conyers resident shot in his apartment, suspect escapes A shooting Tuesday morning left one Conyers man dead in his apartment. Jarvis Hughey, 24, was shot at least one time in his Meadow Crossing apartment, 1190 Mill Crest Walk, Conyers, around 3 a.m., according to Conyers Police spokesperson Kim Lucas. According to Lucas, Hughey’s girlfriend, who was inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, called police to the apartment complex. Lucas says she was hiding in the apartment when Hughey was shot by the suspect. Police are exploring every possibility to determine what led to the shooting. There weren’t any signs of forced entry at the scene and there wasn’t anything obviously missing from the apartment, says Lucas. The department is waiting on the coroner’s report to determine the cause of death. The suspect who shot the Hughey fled the scene before police could arrive and is still at-large. Police do not have an accurate description of the suspect at this time. The investigation is ongoing. Any information on this case can be submitted anonymously to the Crime Stoppers tip line at 404 577-TIPS (8477), online www.crimestoppersatlanta.org, or by texting the tip to CRIMES (274637). Our Thoughts Worth a Donation As we start the year 2015 with great expectations, we actually see a very small glimmer of light at the end of the dark economic misery tunnel most of us have slogged our way through since 2008. Unfortunately, here in Rockdale County that sliver of light has not meant that we are in the midst of a great economy recovery that some members of the federal government and national main stream media say we are experiencing. That is why worthwhile community nonprofits are still important to the social health of a community. One of those nonprofits, and for sure one of our favorites, is Phoenix Pass, located at Light House Village campus, 541 Sigman Road, in Rockdale County. Phoenix Pass offers transitional housing for single mothers, with children, who have no place to go. These families are not just given a place to stay but are taught how to position themselves to survive on their own. We particularly appreciate Phoenix Pass Director Marcie Howington, who has a heart as big as the whole outdoors; Marcie is a bright and upcoming Rockdale Young Professional Leader of Rockdale County. The Phoenix Pass folks are in the middle of a capital campaign needed to raise funds to build more apartments for needy single parent families. Thanks to a grant from an Atlanta foundation they’re halfway to their goal. We ask for your kindness in supporting the efforts of Phoenix Pass. You can do so by calling 770-7601020 or dropping a note to director@phoenixpass.org. Donating to this nonprofit will be a gift that keeps giving year after year after year.

he rain this past week certainly has been a blessing, as a good rain always is, but for circulation newspaper people, inclement weather has always been one big pain in the rear. I ’ v e spent 18 years of my long, illustrious career in circulation. During T. Pat that peCavanaugh riod of Publisher time, I hated any kind of weather that didn’t feature sunny clear days and starry nights. The truth of the matter is that I still do. In the south, there wasn’t ever a guarantee of such nice weather. For many years, there were in fact afternoon newspapers, delivered at 1 p.m. As you began to deliver your paper route, you could be looking at bright blue skies and 80-degree temperatures and white fluffy clouds, and at 3 p.m., there could be a rain storm that dropped two inches of rain in a matter of 15 minutes. Then it would be clear skies and 80 degrees with humidity of about 500 degrees. In the meantime, half the afternoon distribution would be completely wet. It wasn’t the carrier’s fault, or ours, and I don’t want to blame God for sure. Since those days, the industry has given up serving newspapers without properly bagging each one, and for that matter, the industry has given up on afternoon newspapers. I would receive some of the nastiest calls during those times of turbulent
weather changes, especially from some very mature folks who I am sure had their Bible on their lap as they were telling me how rotten the carrier was, how

I remember one time in Elizabeth City, N.C., it snowed more than 40 inches in two days. Since there was only one snow plow in the area and it had to cover nine counties, it took about a week to make roads passable. We actually printed the paper every day. To this day, I still don’t know why, but I tried with my trusty crew of one to at least serve papers in the city with no hope to get papers to the rural areas. office and received a phone call. I answered with great enthusiasm, “T. Pat Cavanaugh, Circulation Manager. I hope you are having a great day.” There was a pause and this elderly lady said, “Hell no, I am not having a good day, and I don’t appreciate you trying to make me have one. Do you have that straight?” As my bubble burst, I answered meekly, “Yes, Ma’am.” “Now, are you the little fat boy I see in the paper who is always doing something with the Jaycees?” “Yes Ma’am, I am,” I said. “But I’m not quite that fat. You know how pictures make you look a little chunkier.” “Well,” she said, “maybe
if you spent less time with the Jaycees and more time doing your job, you would not only be not so ‘chunky,’ I would have a paper right now.” Humility is a hard pill to swallow, but I found that lady’s house. I actually had to walk about five blocks through snowdrifts to find her. Later, she actually became a good friend who always gave me good advice, and boy could she fix the best collards and ham. I made sure she got a paper every day from that point on, rain or shine, and it was never wet because it was kitchen delivered. Now here is a promise: if one of you ever gets a wet paper and you can cook a great pot of collard greens and ham, call me. I will personally deliver your paper every week, around lunch time and right to your kitchen table. T. Pat Cavanaugh is the publisher of The News. A birthday gift from Silas
Silas before and after this past year’s surgeries.
Conyers family asks for birthday donation to cleft palate repair team By Michelle Kim
mkim@rockdalenews.com
For his first birthday, instead of receiving gifts, a very special Conyers baby and his family want to give a gift to the medical team that helped reconstruct his face. Silas Correll was born last January with a cleft palate and lip, a birth defect that left him with no separation between his mouth and nose cavities. In his less-than-one year of life on earth so far, this sweet baby has endured two major facial surgeries to reconstruct the roof of his mouth and lip. Although he faces more surgeries in the years to come for dental work and possible hearing issues, he is now better able to eat and is even beginning to attempt say syllables. In gratitude, his mother Jaime Stone and father Joshua Correll wanted to do something for the craniofacial team at the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta.
To donate to Silas Stone’s birthday account, go to http:// www.gofundme. com/silasclelftcharity Jaime said, “The entire team at Scottish Rite, they were so great, informing us and teaching us everything we needed to know about” cleft palate before Silas was born. After he was born on January 20, 2014, when he was sent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Northside Hospital, the medical team from CHOA would come to check on him, even walking through the “Snowpocalypse” winter storm that shut down Atlanta’s roadways. For Silas’s first birthday, Jaime and Joshua knew they didn’t need anything since they have plenty of toys and clothes with Silas’s older brother, Elijah, 2. Instead, Jaime is asking friends, family and the
community to donate to the “Silas’s 1st B-day Charity 4 Cleft” GoFundMe account online. She started off with a modest goal of just a few hundred dollars, but after seeing how quickly that was reached, set the bar higher. Her goal now is to raise $5,000 before January 9 to present to the CHOA craniofacial team. The experience has been an eye-opening one for Jaime and her eral cleft lip and palate. friends and family. “Obviously it was just devastat“For him to be born and look ing. Overview of Programs The Edwards Middle School Academy for Pre-Medical Sciences offers students an opportunity to explore various careers in the medical field while acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully transition into high school medical programs or related fields of study. This introduction to medical sciences at the middle school level allows students to prepare academically for coursework necessary to becoming a health care professional. The early exposure will also aid students in deciding whether to pursue this course of study at the high school level.
Curriculum Students in the Edwards Middle School Academy for Pre-Medical Sciences will need a strong academic foundation in math and science as the program requires advanced level coursework in these areas. At each grade level students will receive instruction in the foundational areas of Teamwork, Leadership, Healthcare Communications, Safety Practices, and Infection Control. Features of the curriculum specific to each grade level are as follows: • Sixth Grade students will explore the fields of Pharmacy, Radiology, Rehabilitation Services, and Dentistry. • Seventh Grade students will explore the fields of Respiratory Therapy, Medical Lab Technology, Biotechnology, and Emergency Services. • Eighth Grade students will explore the fields of Nursing, Medicine, Health Informatics, and Healthcare Pathways Students in the program will also benefit from demonstrations, lectures, and visits from health care professionals.
Purpose and Goals The purpose of the program is to provide students exposure to various careers in the medical field. As students explore various occupations they will receive the training, knowledge, and skills needed to successfully transition into a high school medical program. Integrated into the curriculum is an emphasis on decision making, problem solving, teamwork, communication, and work ethic. Employers look for these soft skills when searching for the best employee to fill a position. The emphasis on developing these skills within the program will result in students prepared for future success in any chosen profession. Students completing the Pre-Medical Sciences program at Edwards Middle School will enter high school with knowledge and skills required for various occupations in the medical field, well-developed academic focus, and essential intangible qualities desired by employers.
Overview of Programs
The Center for Technology and Engineering will offer a three-year program for middle school students with advanced abilities and outcomes in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. In our inaugural year, we will focus on the Aerospace Engineering sector. This is a natural fit as Conyers Middle School has been recognized in the past for being a NASA Explorer School. We began many years ago with innovative programs involving students and faculty engaging in NASA science activities and even live communication with astronauts on the International Space Station in space!

Armed robbery at MetroPCS
The Rockdale County Sheriff Office is searching for two suspects that robbed a Metro PCS, 2020 Eastside Drive, Rockdale County, retailer Tuesday afternoon. Around 1:42 p.m., the two suspects robbed the store getting away with what’s being described as a “small amount of cash” from the store’s cash register. RCSO Sgt. Andy Arnold says that more than likely means less than $100. Both men were armed with black semi-automatic handguns. No one was hurt during
the incident. The two suspects fled the scene on foot and the RCSO setup a perimeter around that area of Salem Road, but were unable to find the duo. One suspect is believed to be a black male wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans. The other suspect is believed to be wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. The RCSO is asking that if anyone has any information that can lead to capture of the suspects call RCSO Cpl. Michael Cobb at (770) 278-8154.

RECORDS From front page
All records from 1976 to the present are at least filed in the county computer system, so if the physical original copy becomes damage or misplaced there’s a backup, said Wilson, but, all records before that year have no backup. Some of the pages of these books are stained, brittle, torn and are literally being held together with clear Scotch tape. “Everything before (1976) is paper only. The first one hundred years is vulnerable, said Wilson. “Every time you try to turn the page it would tear it a little bit more.” It takes about a week and $1,000 to breathe new life into an old record book. A specialized contractor pulls out each page of the book individually to fix any rips or tears on the page and removes the acid from the page to stop it from deteriorating any further. Each page is then run through a large scanner to make a digital version to store on the county servers. Once the page is digitized, it’s placed back into a record with plastic covering for each page.
Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 • 15 “It’s the original copy, but it’s restored and preserved,” said Wilson. Wilson has been working on digitization the records since she was elected to office in 1999, but her initiative to create a new records center where all the county’s records could be stored for safe keeping came from a fire that happened in Hancock County, Ga. On Aug. 11, a fire occurred at the Hancock County Courthouse and destroyed a lot of the
county’s records. A Hancock County official said a lot of the criminal and civil court records were lost, along with a lot of the divorce records. Some property records were already in the system. The fire occurred at 3 a.m. and it’s still undetermined how it was started. The new records center will be a renovated empty space at the Government Annex building at 1400

Parker Road. The area will be climate controlled and will mitigate the likelihood of the records being damaged over time. The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners approved a $100,000 request from Wilson to fund the renovation project in its
2015 capital budget. Wilson says she hopes to move a lot of the records in the Real Estate room into the new records center, and then the additional could be used to bring in more computers that will be used access the digitized files.
