COVINGTON, Ga. — Cue ‘Pomp and Circumstance.’ It’s almost time for the Class of 2021 to take the stage for their graduation ceremony. Alcovy, Eastside, Newton and Social Circle high schools have named their valedictorian — or, in the case of Alcovy, co-valedictorians — for the year. These individuals will be recognized and commended for their commitment to academic excellence. We spoke with all five local valedictorians this spring in an effort to highlight their achievements and provide insight into their next steps. Class of 2021

ALCOVY Alcovy High School has two valedictorians this year: Logan Dobar and Natalia Sanchez. Sanchez, 18, said she knew she was near the top of her senior class in grades and was “actively going after” the academic honor as the year progressed. “I thought I might as well try,” she said. “It’s the only time in my life I will get the chance to do it.” Sanchez attended Newton County schools all 12 years. She credited her parents with supporting her academic efforts

after she was among the first in her family to graduate from high school. “They had such a big part in it,” she said. Sanchez said her parents, Aida and Miguel Sanchez, wanted to support her academic efforts after they did not receive the same level of support for their education from their parents. “They taught me to put my best foot forward … reach my full potential and exceed expectations,” Sanchez said. Her mother is a native of Cuba

while her father emigrated from Mexico at age 16. Sanchez is the first person on her father’s side of the family to graduate from high school, she said. “There were not many opportunities given the circumstances,” she said of her parents. The Alcovy co-valedictorian also credited her teachers at Alcovy and Newton College and Career Academy (NCCA) with helping her gain the academic honor. She prepared for college by taking a number of Advanced

Placement (AP) courses, including AP Statistics and AP English Literature. “All they want is the best for each student,” she said. “Also, the way they push us … make the content engaging.” However, she selected Jasmine El-Jourbagy as her favorite teacher even though Sanchez was never one of her students. El-Jourbagy was faculty advisor of NCCA’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter, of which Sanchez served as president this year. “She was so supportive and … was kind of a mentor to me,” Sanchez said. Sanchez also was elected vice president of Georgia FBLA’s Northeast Area for 2021-2022. She said she plans to attend the University of Georgia in the fall and is “leaning toward” majoring in International Business. Sanchez said she was drawn to UGA because of its academic offerings — though she said the transition from a high school setting to a 37,000-student university will be a challenge. “I’m terrified of how big it is but it will give me the experience I need,” she said. Co-Valedictorian Logan Dobar said he was focused on “doing well” in his studies and had no idea he was in the running to be the school’s designated top student. He said he believed focusing on working hard at his studies

during his four years at Alcovy rather than spending the same time on pursuits that may not be as productive was the “right thing to do.” As a result, Dobar is both 2021 co-valedictorian for the school and its 2021 STAR Student award winner after earning the highest score on the SAT among those who took the college entrance exam. Dobar said he is choosing to attend Georgia Southern University in the fall because it has an engineering college that is comparatively smaller than others in the state. He plans to major in electrical engineering and said GSU is a research university where he hopes to do research in electrical engineering. Dobar, 18, is the son of Sandra and Maynard Dobar and attended Newton County schools all 12 years. In addition to his dual enrollment classes, Dobar was a member of the NCCA Electrathon car team, the VEX Robotics Team, and the Technology Student Association throughout high school. He was a Dual Enrollment student at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College, and attended the Newton College and Career Academy STEM Institute. He also scored 1370 out of 1600 on the SAT to earn Alcovy’s STAR Student award as part of the annual competition sponsored by the Professional Association of

Georgia Educators. He said engineering instructor Ryan Allred of the NCCA STEM Institute was his favorite teacher. “Mr. Allred went above and beyond in teaching engineering, organizing the chapter of the Technology Student Association, the Vex Robotics team, and more,” Dobar said in a news release earlier this year. “Additionally, he taught his courses well with large amounts of hands-on learning experience.” EASTSIDE Joyce Li was named this year’s valedictorian at Eastside High School. Li plans to attend Georgia Tech this fall and major in computer science. Currently enrolled in a computer science principles class this semester, she felt the institution was the right fit for her to continued studies from both a financial and academic standpoint. “It’s in Georgia so tuition is cheaper,” Li noted. “And I plan on going into computer science, so it made more sense for me to go to Georgia Tech than to UGA or Emory.” Being crowned valedictorian is a symbol of sustained academic success. Asked how she felt she was able to achieve that success over her four years at Eastside, Li stated she made academic her primary focus. “I’m not a very athletic person; it was either that or actually

doing well in school to standout,” she said with a laugh. “For learning, some things just came easier to me than some of my other friends, I would say. So that really helped a lot.” But that’s not to be misconstrued. While Li’s intelligence set her up in a favorable position to achieve academic excellence, she believes her grades are equally a product of hard work. “There was definitely a lot of hours put into studying,” she said. Li has always lived in the Eastside district, having been enrolled at Cousins Middle School prior to going to classes on Eagle Drive. She stated that her favorite class during her time in high school was Latin, thanks in no small part to instructor Eric Adams, whom Li selected as her STAR Teacher this spring. “Not particularly because I liked the subject that much,” she added, “but because my teacher, Mr. Adams, was really good. He made the class much more fun and much more interesting than what an average Latin class might’ve been.” NEWTON Newton High School Valedictorian Nathaniel “Skye” Nash said he worked to be the school’s top student for reasons close to his heart — and his parents’ hearts as well. One reason was financial so he could be positioned to earn the

Metro Creative Services

scholarship money he needed to attend the college of his choice without it being a financial burden for his family. The other reason was to help people like his parents, Faith Head and Nathaniel Nash, both of whom come from families with histories of heart disease, he said.

Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

Nash, 18, intends to become a cardiologist after working through Emory’s world-famous medical school. He said he plans to begin his college studies at Oxford College and go on to its parent campus, Emory University in Atlanta, for pre-med studies. A cardiologist diagnoses and treats diseases of the heart, blood

vessels and circulatory system. “I’m trying to give back to my family and the community,” Nash said. He said he already had decided by fifth grade at Porterdale Elementary he wanted to work in the medical specialty of cardiology after doing a project about heart disease. He said he worked both virtually and in-person, depending on the class, since the pandemic began in his junior year. SOCIAL CIRCLE Emily Hardwar, the valedictorian at Social Circle High School, feels prepared to step foot on a college campus. After all, she’s already received a healthy dose of what’s to come from her professors at Georgia State once she enrolls at the Atlanta campus this fall. “I did dual enrollment at Georgia State’s Newton campus, so [the transition] will be easier for me,” Harwar said. At this time, she plans to pursue a degree in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), although she admits that’s “subject to change.” Harwar selected Georgia State because of the cost of admission and proximity to her hometown, as well as the various extracurricular activities offered at the university. “I’m excited because they seem to do a lot of things with clubs and diversity,” she said. Reflecting on the honor of being named Valedictorian, Hardwar doesn’t think she’s gotten to where she is by being the most intelligent individual in the room. Instead, she believes her success has been the result of pouring countless hours into her studies. “It’s definitely not because I’m the smartest person. It’s definitely work ethic and studying,” she said. “I think anybody could’ve been in my place, especially since I’m not one of those geniuses where they just get everything. It’s really just putting in work and wanting to maintain my grades.”
