Ecological Services Company of the Year
Combining ecology, planning & development Solutions UK is proud to present SES (Staffordshire Ecological Services) as its selected Ecological Services Company of the Year.
country that we can call upon to provide advice and guidance. Our cost effective, innovative solutions help you stay on the right side of the law.
As Specialists in providing ecological survey and advice with regard to development, land management, quarry restoration and local authority projects, SES’s ecologists have considerable experience liaising with Local Planning Authorities and Natural England to ensure smooth passage of your scheme.
“SES Ltd. is a not for profit ethical company and a member of the Association of Wildlife Trust Consultancies. Our profits go back into the parent organisation to fund conservation projects and wildlife education in Staffordshire.”
SES has worked with a number of clients to resolve frequent problems involving ecological issues. They provide protected species surveys, mitigation and licencing for Bats, Barn owls, Water voles, Otters, Badgers, White-clawed crayfish, Great Crested Newts and Reptiles. Their solutions range from habitat manipulation (development sites) to provide suitable areas for species away from working areas, location and design for bat housing, timetabling of building demolitions and when protected species licenses and surveys will be required prior to any works commencing. Armed with a team of dedicated, experienced staff, SES provides a complete service, offering advice and guidance to customers enabling them to choose the right process for them. All staff are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and hold protected species class licences from Natural England. SES specialise in providing client focused solutions to the ecological issues raised by much of today’s industry, development and local government activity. Dave Haslam, Principal Ecologist at SES commented: “We are a wholly owned subsidiary of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and specialise in providing ecological survey and advice to both the public and private sectors. “All staff are fully licenced to deal with protected species and we have access through the Wildlife Trusts to skilled experts around the
Re-development timetables can be thrown out of the window if ecological issues are not dealt with prior to formulating work schedules. Even when planning permission has been granted, protected species must be considered at all stages of work in order to keep companies within the law. Frequent issues include the presence of bats and nesting birds within buildings due for demolition or refurbishment. Without the required lead in time for an ecologist to advise on these issues, which includes timing of works to cause minimum disturbance, the project costs can dramatically increase due to site closures or retention of derelict buildings until the protected species issues have been sorted out. Another frequent problem, especially within the West Midlands, is when development sites are cleared of vegetation to produce a flat clean site. Though the site managers feel they have removed the majority of ecological concerns with such actions, this type of habitat (bare ground) is attractive to a number of protected species including reptiles, invertebrates and migratory birds such as Little Ringed Plover and Black Redstart which are Schedule 1 birds in the Wildlife and Countryside Act and receive protection from disturbance once they have set up territories on a development site. The presence of these species on recently cleared sites causes delays in developments and may close
the whole site from any activity for a minimum of 4 months. Post development monitoring is important not only for the conservation of biodiversity but as a marketing opportunity for companies to provide examples of their competencies when submitting planning applications and to demonstrate their commitment to environmental management. Having worked extensively throughout the West Midlands, SES has forged excellent links with local and regional planners, councils, government agencies and businesses. Able to draw on a wealth of local knowledge, SES are uniquely placed to provide an insight into the ecological issues faced in the region and provide practical, cost-effective solutions that benefit both biodiversity and the client. SES are
ISO 14001 accredited with reports compliant to BS 42020:2013 Biodiversity-code of practice for planning and development. The company and staff are fully insured for all work. SES staff are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and hold protected species class licences from Natural England. SES specialise in providing client focused solutions to the ecological issues raised by much of today’s industry, development and local government activity.
“We work closely with our clients to provide the professional advice they need and help them manage their projects from the preliminary pre-application stage through to any detailed protected species surveys, licensing and mitigation works required. SES also can offer advice on habitat creation and ecological management schemes, provide ‘toolbox talks’ and can supervise projects as an Ecological Clerk of Works. Our clients include highways departments, local councils, planning and development agencies, construction companies, architects, charities and private individuals.”
David stated: “We have experience of a wide range of ecological projects including large and small-scale development schemes in the residential, commercial, recreational, industrial and renewable energy sectors.

Machine Tool Auction Site Company of the Year
Easy to use online machine tool auction site through our auctions. It’s a win-win situation.”
Solutions UK is proud to present CNConlineauctions.com as its selected Machine Tool Auction Site Company of the Year. CNConlineauctions.com is an innovative online service designed to help manufacturing businesses buy and sell CNC machinery with complete confidence and ease. Since its launch earlier this year, the site has not only attracted UK buyers but has also reached a significant buying audience in Europe too. The CNConlineauctions.com website is an easyto-navigate online auction system for buying and selling CNC machine tools, both new and used, in the UK and Europe, with a location set up in the United States to cater for the global market. Managing director Paul Lee explains: “We knew there was a need for this service and the high level of online traffic from all over the UK and Europe confirms that. This means that for those looking to sell their CNC machinery we have a solid buying audience, and for those looking to buy we have a good stock of CNC machinery rolling
Easy to use system – registration not required In response to customer feedback and in line with their user-friendly philosophy, the registration process on the new site will be removed making the experience even smoother and the website even quicker and easier to navigate. That’s a system that has been welcomed by experienced business owners and managers keen to save both transactional costs and administrative time in a way in which they can have control of the process throughout. Richard Bridgman, Chairman of Warren Services said: “Engineering firms have enough admin to process as it is, so a system which makes things simpler all round is a great idea and it can only be positive for the industry.” He added: “I like the idea that there’s currently no cost to list an item, and when it sells the fee is reasonable. You can set a reserve, or if you’re bidding for an item you can see it working if you want to before purchase, then set the limit you’re prepared to bid to – the system does that automatically for you if you’re busy, and it’s secure.” He added: “Having the additional transport and
maintenance support solutions available will remove a lot of headaches for many small to medium sized businesses who might not be able to manage all that themselves too.” The enhanced online auction site will also be extended to include new machinery and turnkey packages. This enables buyers to compare all available options in one place, gives an additional route to market for OEM’s with back up support and maintenance options for buyers all managed in one place. Fully supported system makes economic sense The online system ensures that there are no unnecessary overheads built into the costs, stripping the prices down and retaining value in the product for both buyer and seller and effectively saving both money. The online procedure can take care of the logistics too, as the
entire process of moving the machine and getting it up and running safely at the buyer’s site can be organised through the website. The advanced “Assurance+” support packages available enable those looking to buy online to manage their budget with complete confidence in both the machines purchase and its long-term productivity. Company of Choice
Helping the construction industry reduce project times, costs & carbon emissions Solutions UK is proud to present Deep Soil Mixing Ltd as a selected Company of Choice.
objective is to provide the most trustworthy expertise and services available.”
Deep Soil Mixing Ltd (DSML) is the UK’s leading deep soil mixing specialist. The company was set up in 2012 by Robert McGall and Colin Critchlow to further expand the use of soil mixing as a ground improvement technique in the construction industry. With over 75 years’ combined experience in ground engineering and construction DSML have significantly broader experience in applying advanced deep soil mixing techniques than the other main ground engineering firms.
Colin continued: “Deep soil mixing is more environmentally friendly economical, flexible and adaptable than most other ground improvement methods. Benefits of the technology include reducing project cost, carbon footprint and timelines. The ground is re-engineered in-situ, removing the need to excavate or import fill. There is no leeching during the installation, or later as the mixed soil ages.”
Colin Critchlow, Commercial Director at Deep Soil Mixing Ltd, commented: “While the method for improving the characteristics of non-organic soils by using soil mixing techniques to reduce settlement, increase the stability of slopes and embankments is an established one, it is both more challenging and often more costly to increase the firmness of soft organic soils like peat, silt and clay – until now, that is. Using our technology we are able to effectively reengineer any poor or contaminated ground, and all at a reduced expense, time, and using environmentally friendly solutions. “In addition, Deep Soil Mixing Ltd offer practical hands-on knowhow, technical rigour, reliability, personalised services and the highest standards. Our directors have broad experience in applying advanced deep soil mixing technology and our
By mechanically mixing the existing soil with a cementitious binder, deep soil mixing changes the characteristics of weak soil and makes it more like soft rock, but can still be excavated by traditional methods. This enables more efficient and effective installation and greater ground stability. Due to the fact natural resources are spared during this process, installations take less time overall having fewer associated costs and carbon emissions compared to other methods.
construction of cofferdam infrastructures, reduction of settlement to small structures, sea defence works, and flood prevention schemes. Asked to discuss plans for the future of the business, Colin concluded: “As the technology for deep soil mixing develops and improves, the demand for soil mixing solutions and applications increase. For instance, applications such as constructing foundations and basements, stopping coastal erosion, repairing sheet pile walls and stabilising the sea bed, are standard in many other countries. At DSML we are particularly keen to get involved in more specialist work where traditional methods have failed
or proven to be less than economical, for example bringing brownfield sites back into use or re-engineering landfill areas to be used for new industrial applications. “We believe that deep soil mixing solutions will become standard practice over the next few years, and are investing in our people and resources in order to expand the use of soil mixing as a ground improvement method in the UK and around the world.” Contact T 01525 716445 info@deepsoilmixing.co.uk www.deepsoilmixing.co.uk
Deep soil mixing techniques have been used with great success by DSML for various projects including strengthening of the sea beds for construction infill work to take place, repairing and realignment of canals, stabilising river embankments even when slippage has occurred, providing impermeable barriers to stop leaching of contaminants,

Where tradition meets technology seamlessly can now tap into an endless supply of free, clean energy, with the added long-term financial benefit of guaranteed payments from the government’s Feed-In Tariffs.”
Solutions UK is extremely proud to present its Company of Choice award to Solar Slate. Solar Slate is changing the face of solar PV. Its planning-friendly range of solar slates (also known as ‘solar tiles’) provide solar power from an innovative roof covering that blends seamlessly with traditional slate and replaces natural slate. As part of the RES Group which has been established for over 30 years, Solar Slate is renowned for its quality products that have been on the market for over 7 years. Products have an unrivalled track record in gaining planning approval and offer no unsightly solar panels. It provides users with energy cost security and allows you to earn from your investment and protect yourself from electricity supply disruption.
Solar Slate’s original, British-designed solar PV slate, Solar Slate Traditional, is already established as a popular solution for achieving without the visual compromise of conventional solar panels. The more recently launched Solar Slate Multi offers the same unobtrusive finish at a price that’s 45% less than Solar Slate Traditional and is significantly faster to install. The affordable, quick to install Solar Slate Multi doubles as a solar panel and a roof slate and seamlessly integrates into any slate roof. It is an important breakthrough that helps to achieve true environmental conservation – making clean energy possible without compromising British heritage. Unlike many of its competitors, Slate Multi produces a slate-effect finish that is close to seamless. It is not simply a tile-shaped solar panel, but a truly innovative piece of technology that really looks like slate. Achieving this combination of performance and longevity as a building envelope, requires a product constructed using high-quality materials and sub
components. The chassis of the product is aluminium finished with a hard anodized surface to four times conventional thickness. The cover sheet is low-sodium PV glass, and the solar cells are high performance mono units. Even the slate boundary lines are stove enamelled for long life. To maintain product quality, the units are produced in fully-accredited European manufacturing facilities. Paul explained: “All of our products, including the Multi, are the result of British R&D excellence, with manufacturing taking place in fully-accredited European facilities. The Multi represents a further development of the technology pioneered by Solar Slate Traditional. “All of our products are backed with a wealth of experience and a wide install base. Every project is a journey so we support our customers every step of the way, from supply and design through to installation and warranty. “ In terms of future plans, Solar Slate aim to continue to develop its quality products and services. Paul
stated: “We are never content to simply stick with the original product; we are always keen to further the innovation process, in order to make solar slate technology accessible to a wider range of people.” Solar Slate has recently won the award for ‘Product Innovation of the Year’ at the Low Carbon Performance Awards, organised by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineering (CIBSE). Products can be found at their permanent stand at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon. They also feature at many trade shows throughout the year such as Home Build and Renovation, Self-Build show and Energy Now. The company will next be appearing at the National Self Build & Renovation Show in Swindon on the 30 January- 1 February and the Self build & Improve Your Home Show in Belfast on the 13-15 February as well as the Great Yorkshire Show, Scottish Self Catering homes show and the National Ploughing Championships later in the year.
Paul Nielson, Commercial Director at Solar Slate commented: “For the first time, it’s possible to take advantage of solar power without compromise. You can unhook from the fossil-fuelled lifestyle and make a real reduction in your carbon footprint. “As a technology, ours is unlike anything else that’s available. It truly takes roof integrated solar PV to a new dimension.

Don’t let back or foot pain make your life or job a misery! Why not try a product from the USA that, for over 15 years, has been taking the pain out of standing and walking for millions of Americans. Sole-Mates® massaging insoles have been clinically proven to: ll Reduce lower back, hip and knee pain ll Provide INSTANT relief for Plantar Fasciitis, Morton’s Neuroma, Bunions and Heel Spurs ll Increase circulation to the feet and lower legs by more than 50% Why do our back and feet hurt? We’ve lost our natural posture. We are designed to walk in bare feet on soft ground! Many of our foot, back, knee and leg problems result from walking on hard surfaces and wearing incorrect footwear. This affects the alignment of our feet, hips and entire spinal column. Why you need Sole-Mates® insoles Sole-Mates insoles are based on simple but effective scientific principles. They contain a fluid and a fluid, unlike foam or gel, doesn’t compress. Instead, pressure from the heel and ball of the foot pushes it up under the arch of the foot, lifting and supporting it, tilting the wearer slightly back. This leads to a realignment of the spine that now supports the weight of the head and upper body, taking pressure off the lower back. Because the fluid is spread across the arch, yourweight is spread over a larger area, reducing the pressure on the ball and heel, allowing you to stand, walk or work for long periods with little or no pain. The natural movement of the fluid whilst walking has been clinically proven to increase the circulation to the lower legs and feet by more than 50%, reducing tiredness, cramp and other problems caused by poor circulation, including gout and diabetes.

RMI brings new high pressure pump stations on line As China aims to improve its coal mine safety record, it is investing in new, largescale mining operations with modern equipment, while also improving the safety and productivity of the medium sized enterprises. In order to assist this initiative, RMI has launched a range of high pressure pump stations which are designed to provide a cost effective pumping system; predominantly used for powering the roof support systems. RMI Pressure Systems has been involved with the Chinese coal mining industry for 30 years, installing high pressure pumping systems in over 10 provinces across China. The emulsion systems are supplied with three S375 pumps, which operate as duty, assist and standby and are supplied by two tanks. The water systems operate with two S300 pumps, on a duty/standby arrangement, and come with one supply tank. Both systems are controlled by the same, well proven, technology which is found on the existing range of larger pumping stations.
Based around its S range of pumps, RMI has developed six models in the Streamline range; three for emulsion systems and three for water systems.

The latest addition to the industry leading S-Series of crankshaft driven reciprocating pumps, the S500 pump is designed such that all the working
parts are totally enclosed, enabling it to operate in dust laden and other hazardous atmospheres. The use of the highest quality materials, manufactured to exacting standards, ensures that the final product will provide continuous, reliable performance. Design innovation The S500 pump features a smoother pressure profile which reduces the impact of surges on other critical items of equipment within the system - such
as hoses and valves - which means that the entire system offers increased reliability over competitors. Reliability is further enhanced thanks to precision ground gears, lead bronze big and small end bearings, stainless steel stuffing boxes and solid ceramic plungers with Kevlar seal packing, whilst the S500’s crankshaft is manufactured from high tensile steel using advanced machining and drilling techniques for maximum durability. Thorite’s now the place The simple, to go for Graco Pumps comprehensive solution The rugged range of Graco process pumps is now available from Thorite, the UK’s biggest independent distributor of fluid power products and process systems. Graco’s process division specialises in air-operated diaphragm pumps
for the food, chemicals and pharmaceuticals processing industries, and features models capable of efficiently moving substances as diverse as acids or glue, while for general industry use positive displacement utility pumps are
ideal for small applications. However, the main reason Graco pumps provide the motive power for so many processing applications relates to their huge range of products targeted at specific product handling functions. This is clearly demonstrated in Graco’s Hygienic Pumps Division in food processing for example, where the Graco Saniforce range includes air-operated double diaphragm pumps, piston transfer pumps, drum unloaders, bin evacuation systems (BES) and high pressure cleaning packages. These make up complete portfolios of rugged equipment designed for individual food products including: meat and poultry, ice cream variegates, caramels and peanut butter, tomato paste, condiments, dips and dressings, jams and jellies, juice concentrates and purees, cultured dairy variegate and wine production. Keeping it in the family NBML has predominantly concentrated on repairing and refurbishing blow mould tools for many of the leading European plastics container manufacturers.
Here’s a fine example of a project from concept idea to finished product using 5 Axis machining by North Bucks Machining. James Martin, Xscale Engines approached NBM with a vision to replicate this scale model and using CAD data supplied by Johnathan Rigby, 3D Laser Scanning and together produced a Lotus 912 1/4 scale engine block - a work of art. It is also intended to produce other iconic engines. Stewart Palmer, NBM Ltd. 01908 611669 Johnathan Rigby www.northbucksmachining.co.uk jrigby@laser-scanning.co.uk northbucksmc@btconnect.com

But an opportunity to win a long term contract to manufacture a range of new tools put a focus on the organisations’ productivity and its abilities to compete against established home and overseas O/E mould manufacturers. A landmark investment in a Quaser MF 630U 5 axis VMC by North Bucks Machining Limited (NBML) is a key factor in the Newport Pagnell based firm’s objective of becoming one of the UK’s leading exponents in the design and manufacture of advanced blow moulding tools. Established 4 ½ years ago, the business has a strong family influence. Dave and Rose Palmer set the company up and have subsequently been joined by their son Stewart and daughter Jo who played important roles in manufacturing and company administration respectively.
“We had the skills but not the machining capability,” explains Stewart. “I had extensive experience with 5 axis machining from my days in F1 and when I joined the family business 2 years ago my first objective was to move towards five axis work. And when the contract opportunity arose, it was the tipping point for investment.
Since securing the first major order which was for screen wash and oil containers, the North Bucks team has won further O/E orders for a range of containers used liquid fertilizers in various sizes. These have a distinctive shape and Stewart and his father Dave have worked closely with the customer, bringing their extensive experience to the project by designing the mould tools’ cooling holes, splits and bolt positions. Stewart’s previous experience with Bridgeport CNC’s resulted in a visit from ETG’s Jack Carter who identified the Quaser VMC as the most suitable machine.

Acclaimed Security – does exactly what it says on the tin Solutions UK is proud to present the highly prestigious and industry acclaimed Security Excellence profile to Acclaimed Security. Roy Unwin, Owner of Acclaimed Security, commented: “May I introduce you to Acclaimed Security, the award winning security provider who are large enough to cope yet small enough to care about you, the client. “I started in the Security Industry in 1982 and I have seen many changes and improvement over the years. That said, what is the
fundamental aspect that wins every time? Customer Care, Correct Procedures, Best Equipment, Best Training; well it’s all of those, but also as Ronseal says: ‘It does exactly what it says on the tin’ – if the security is as good as the salesman says then you are going to have good security. “There are many security providers, both Big and Small, but finding those who care and follow those fine words of the initial meeting into practice is what many find to be frustrating and ineffective when put into play.”
Company profile Since its establishment in 2002, Acclaimed Security has gone from strength to strength; offering businesses all over the country a whole host of security measures. your company. Acclaimed Security’s security measures have been utilized by a number of blue-chip companies including Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds City Council, Freight Liner, Tarmac, Seabrook Crisps, Vion Foods, Brake Brothers and Liberty Living. This extensive and recognised cliental is a testament to the innovative products and industry leading standard of service offered by Acclaimed Security. It is recommended that businesses review their existing security systems and practices every 6 months or less. This is considered to be the only way to keep themselves ahead of the rapidly changing environment in the local area, which will consist of a number of continually shifting affecting factors such as the development of new equipment and changes in their personal environment. Frankly, not a lot of businesses follow this protocol, citing a ‘if it ain’t broke...’ attitude, meaning it is only after the system has been compromised that the company realise the importance of keeping abreast of the situation, but not before coming at the expense of great personal cost and loss. Aligning your organisation with Acclaimed Security gives you the peace of mind that all of your vital security needs are being taken care of, and its constantly updated range of products help ensure that you keep ahead of the curve. GuardSafe If there is only one product provided by Acclaimed Security that all security managers should be aware of, then it is GuardSafe. GuardSafe is a unique tool which gives the company, and most importantly the client, the ability to know that a guard is present on site, within seconds. The tool consists of a box fitted to the wall of the premises, which displays a unique code which alters every three minutes. GuardSafe then verifies that the guard is where they should be, when they should be by getting them to check in with the control room using this unique
code. This gives you the peace of mind that there is not only a guard present on your site, but that they are doing their job and patrols, and ensuring the safety of your business.
Able to monitor guards on all sites, and the work they are doing, Acclaimed Security are delighted with the recent successes of this award winning product. The GuardSafe has become an extremely well respected product within the industry and has recently received registered trademark recognition, with a full patent pending. Your premises can be one of the most valuable and vital commodities that your business will own, so it is important to ensure that it is properly guarded at all times, even more so in an age of austerity. Today some businesses find themselves in what can only be described as an ‘economic induced lethargy’, but if you are at all committed to protecting your business you owe it to yourself to try this innovative and revolutionary system for yourself. You will only be sorry if you don’t. selection of industrial applications and ON/OFF road equipment. There are also specialised applications for Hydraulic Hammers used within the construction and demolition industry. Alexis continued: “We have experience of working in a number of specialist sectors and can design specialised kits for any type of application including all plant machinery, low loader trailers, trucks, buses, agriculture equipment, stacker trucks, cranes, waste compactors and bailers, amongst many others. As official distributors of Beka-Max, our skilled and experienced engineers can install or repair your systems on site at a time to suit you. We are also able to offer training, and service contracts, with a long history of servicing hire machinery.
“LEK is also able to provide manual systems – these are individually designed to bring all greasing points to a central point, enabling easy access for manual greasing. We sell specialised quick fill grease guns and adaptors for the pumps using standard 400gm EP2 grease cartridges. All spares, lubrication fittings and pipework etc. are also available.” Alexis added: “As well as Norman and myself, LEK currently employs 2 of my three sons, Robert and James, making it a real family effort. This contributes to the company motto, which is ‘We are a family company that builds its business on service and reliability. Everyone cares all the time, seven days a week, not just some times between 9 to 5.’” Contact T 0151 4307 158 info@beka-max.co.uk www.beka-max.co.uk
