a cause for concern. A thorough inspection revealed that in addition to this problem the pump was leaking from the bottom casing and therefore not running to its full capabilities. In order to resolve both problems the pump had to be shut down and pump distribution and repair specialist AxFlow Limited was called in to provide advice. A decision was taken to completely remove the 40 ton pump, including the lower rising mains, from service. The LRM was very badly eroded so it was decided to make a new pattern and
cast and machine a completely new component. The upper and lower bearings also needed replacing. The lower wear ring was missing altogether and the upper wear ring was also severely eroded/ corroded, so both wear rings were replaced. Fortunately the shaft could be re-used and this was cleaned and dressed. T 020 8579 2111 info@axflow.co.uk www.axflow.co.uk

Ecological Services Company of the Year
Combining ecology, planning & development housing, timetabling of building demolitions and when protected species licenses and surveys will be required prior to any works commencing. Armed with a team of dedicated, experienced staff, SES provides a complete service, offering advice and guidance to customers enabling them to choose the right process for them. All staff are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and hold protected species class licences from Natural England. SES specialise in providing client focused solutions to the ecological issues raised by much of today’s industry, development and local government activity. Solutions UK is proud to present SES (Staffordshire Ecological Services) as its selected Ecological Services Company of the Year.
Dave Haslam, Principal Ecologist at SES commented: “We are a wholly owned subsidiary of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and specialise in providing ecological survey and advice to both the public and private sectors.
As Specialists in providing ecological survey and advice with regard to development, land management, quarry restoration and local authority projects, SES’s ecologists have considerable experience liaising with Local Planning Authorities and Natural England to ensure smooth passage of your scheme.
“All staff are fully licenced to deal with protected species and we have access through the Wildlife Trusts to skilled experts around the country that we can call upon to provide advice and guidance. Our cost effective, innovative solutions help you stay on the right side of the law.
SES has worked with a number of clients to resolve frequent problems involving ecological issues. They provide protected species surveys, mitigation and licencing for Bats, Barn owls, Water voles, Otters, Badgers, White-clawed crayfish, Great Crested Newts and Reptiles. Their solutions range from habitat manipulation (development sites) to provide suitable areas for species away from working areas, location and design for bat
“SES Ltd. is a not for profit ethical company and a member of the Association of Wildlife Trust Consultancies. Our profits go back into the parent organisation to fund conservation projects and wildlife education in Staffordshire.” Re-development timetables can be thrown out of the window if ecological issues are not dealt with prior to formulating work schedules. Even when planning permission has been granted, protected species must be considered at
all stages of work in order to keep companies within the law. Frequent issues include the presence of bats and nesting birds within buildings due for demolition or refurbishment. Without the required lead in time for an ecologist to advise on these issues, which includes timing of works to cause minimum disturbance, the project costs can dramatically increase due to site closures or retention of derelict buildings until the protected species issues have been sorted out. Another frequent problem, especially within the West Midlands, is when development sites are cleared of vegetation to produce a flat clean site. Though the site managers feel they have removed the majority of ecological concerns with such actions, this type of habitat (bare ground) is attractive to a number of protected species including reptiles, invertebrates and migratory birds such as Little Ringed Plover and Black Redstart which are Schedule 1 birds in the Wildlife and Countryside Act and receive protection from disturbance once they have set up territories on a development site. The presence of these species on recently cleared sites causes delays in developments and may close the whole site from any activity for a minimum of 4 months. Post development monitoring is important not only for the conservation of biodiversity but as a marketing opportunity for companies to provide examples of their competencies when submitting planning applications and to demonstrate their commitment to environmental management. Having worked extensively throughout the West Midlands, SES has forged excellent links with local and regional planners, councils, government agencies and businesses. Able to draw on a wealth of local knowledge, SES are
2
uniquely placed to provide an insight into the ecological issues faced in the region and provide practical, costeffective solutions that benefit both biodiversity and the client. SES are ISO 14001 accredited with reports compliant to BS 42020:2013 Biodiversity-code of practice for planning and development. The company and staff are fully insured for all work. SES staff are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and hold protected species class licences from Natural England. SES specialise in providing client focused solutions to the ecological issues raised by much of today’s industry, development and local government activity. David stated: “We have experience of a wide range of ecological projects including large and small-scale development schemes in the residential, commercial, recreational, industrial and renewable energy sectors. “We work closely with our clients to provide the professional advice they need and help them manage their projects from the preliminary pre-application stage through to any detailed protected species surveys, licensing and mitigation works required. SES also can offer advice on habitat creation and ecological management schemes, provide ‘toolbox talks’ and can supervise projects as an Ecological Clerk of Works. Our clients include highways departments, local councils, planning and development agencies, construction companies, architects, charities and private individuals.” For a competitive quote or additional information please call 01889 880 124, email enquiries@ses-gb. co.uk or visit the web site at www.ses-gb.co.uk

Innovative new options is established as online CNC Machinery auction site expands offering A potentially revolutionary offering This latest move has created a one-stop shop for CNC machinery trading, and an additional route to market for the OEM’s which could revolutionise the way equipment across many sectors is bought and sold in the future.
CNConlineauctions.com has expanded their offering to help buyers and sellers of CNC Machinery to get more for their money by bringing both new and old machinery together on one site.
From a new machinery perspective, CNConlineauctions.com has the capability within the site to act as a broker within a modest commission fee as part of their existing auction process. That potentially reduces the cost to sell for the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Those costs would have had to be absorbed by the buyer, thus potentially also keeping the price to the end buyer down.
The online auction system was launched earlier this year to help manufacturing businesses buy and sell CNC machinery with complete confidence and ease via an easy to navigate website.
Risk free and transparent Unlike many brokers, CNConlineauctions. com also has support and maintenance options available for all machinery sold through the site, benefiting both parties too.
That service has now been taken a step further with new machines and products also for sale on the site, allowing buyers to compare a greater range of machinery options and prices side-byside.
The site has been developed by independent CNC industry specialists who recognised the need for a transparent, product-supported auction process which cuts out high transactional margins which would ultimately hit the bottom line of production businesses. For those looking to sell their old machinery and buy new, it means that all processes can be managed in one place both on paper and practically.
Solutions UK is proud to present CNConlineauctions.com as its selected Company of Choice.
Competitive route to market to help machinery manufacturers streamline sales processes The news comes as a result of the team’s determination to help processing businesses get more for their money by upgrading and trading their machinery more efficiently.

are upgrading. The auction fee for used lots is split between both parties at 7.5% each, making it a great way for sellers to recoup maximum value for unused assets, while as buyers; they are likely to pay a lower figure at outset too. For those buying new product no commission is charged. If buying new and selling used in the same transaction, a reduced commission fee of 5% is charged, thus creating further savings. How it works The system is simple, and virtual online auctions complete every 12 days. Bidding commences from day one up to day 12 with “Buy Now” and “Make an Offer” available until the 11th
day of the auction Buyers register online and view uploaded images and information on the equipment for sale. While trusted sellers on the site can upload their machine’s details and images to the site and have it immediately placed in the next auction. High Pressure Pumps 101: Pump up the volume... Designing high pressure, high volume pumps for the harshest of environments. Pump designs fall mainly into two categories, centrifugal and reciprocating (piston) type, each with its own benefits and constraints. The key to matching the correct design of pump to an application is firstly having all the necessary information relating to the application
and the fluids involved. Approaching a manufacturer which has experience and engineering expertise in the field of your application will lead to a better understanding of the requirements of the application. This in turn will allow the manufacturer to propose a suitable design that will integrate with the existing equipment and control systems and provide a reliable and efficient pumping system.

As China aims to improve its coal mine safety record, it is investing in new, large-scale mining operations with modern equipment, while also improving the safety and productivity of the medium sized enterprises. In order to assist this initiative, RMI has launched a range of high pressure pump stations which are designed to provide a cost effective pumping system; predominantly used for powering the roof support systems. RMI Pressure Systems has been involved with the Chinese coal mining industry for 30 years, installing high pressure pumping systems in over 10 provinces across China. It has also established a sales and service network designed to provide extensive product support to this important market. With safety and reliability being improved, especially in the largest mines, attention is now being focused on the smaller mines.
The new Streamline range of pump stations has been developed specifically for the second tier mines and has been created using a standard product offering. This approach has allowed RMI to increase the scale of production, and therefore reduce the manufacturing costs for the range without reducing any of the safety and reliability factors. Based around its S range of pumps, RMI has developed six models in the Streamline range; three for emulsion systems and three for water systems. Renowned for producing one of the most reliable reciprocating pumps in the mining industry, RMI has maintained its focus on material selection and machining tolerances which ensure it continues to deliver high efficiency and excellent reliability. Why you need Sole-Mates® insoles Sole-Mates insoles are based on simple but effective scientific principles. They contain a fluid and a fluid, unlike foam or gel, doesn’t compress. Instead, pressure from the heel and ball of the foot pushes it up under the arch of the foot, lifting and supporting it, tilting the wearer slightly back. This leads to a realignment of the spine that now supports the weight of the head and upper body, taking pressure off the lower back. Because the fluid is spread across the arch, yourweight is spread over a larger area, reducing the pressure on the ball and heel, allowing you to stand, walk or work for long periods with little or no pain. The natural movement of the fluid whilst walking has been clinically proven to increase the circulation to the lower legs and feet by more than 50%, reducing tiredness, cramp and other problems caused by poor circulation, including gout and diabetes.
The recommended retail price is £34.95, however they can be purchased online for a reduced cost of £27.50

including Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds City Council, Freight Liner, Tarmac, Seabrook Crisps, Vion Foods, Brake Brothers and Liberty Living. This extensive and recognised cliental is a testament to the innovative products and industry leading standard of service offered by Acclaimed Security. It is recommended that businesses review their existing security systems and practices every 6 months or less. This is considered to be the only way to keep themselves ahead of the rapidly changing environment in the local area, which will consist of a number of continually shifting affecting factors such as the development of new equipment and changes in their personal environment. Frankly, not a lot of businesses follow this protocol, citing a ‘if it ain’t broke...’ attitude, meaning it is only after the system has been compromised that the company realise the importance of keeping abreast of the situation, but not before coming at the expense of great personal cost and loss. Aligning your organisation with Acclaimed Security gives you the peace of mind that all of your vital security needs are being taken care of, and its constantly updated range of products help ensure that you keep ahead of the curve. GuardSafe If there is only one product provided by Acclaimed Security that all security managers should be aware of, then it is GuardSafe. GuardSafe is a unique tool which gives the company, and most importantly the client, the ability to know that a guard is present on site, within seconds. The tool consists of a box fitted to the wall of the premises, which displays a unique code which alters every three minutes. GuardSafe then verifies that the guard is where they should be, when they should be by getting them to check in with the control room using this unique code. This gives you the peace of mind that there is not only a guard present on your site, but that they are doing their job and patrols, and ensuring the safety of your business.

Able to monitor guards on all sites, and the work they are doing, Acclaimed Security are delighted with the recent successes of this award winning product. The GuardSafe has become an extremely well respected product
within the industry and has recently received registered trademark recognition, with a full patent pending. Your premises can be one of the most valuable and vital commodities that your business will own, so it is important to ensure that it is properly guarded at all times, even more so in an age of austerity. Today some businesses find themselves in what can only be described as an ‘economic induced lethargy’, but if you are at all committed to protecting your business you owe it to yourself to try this innovative and revolutionary system for yourself. You will only be sorry if you don’t. Glass Solutions News
Bespoke glass solutions
Established in 2011, Demon Designs specialise in the supplying and fitting of bespoke glass solutions, including staircases & balustrades, shop fronts, glass floors, glass roofs and aluminium curtain walling. Demon Designs aim to make the process as easy as possible by discussing the project requirements with clients and providing a detailed quotation and drawings, showing proposals. Based in Ford, near Arundel West Sussex, the company strives to provide the highest quality customer service and products.
Dominic Meakins, Founder and Owner of Demon Designs, commented: “We offer the widest possible range of colour for back painted glass & splashbacks, making the process as seamless as possible from order to completion. We can work off-plan or attend site and carry out a full survey. We can also colour match the glass to suit a specific item, tile, work top, Range cooker or even your kettle! “We use toughened glass in all splashbacks near a heat source or with cut outs, as this provides a very hard wearing
product that is heat resistant, and will not crack when installed above hobs or behind kettles.” Demon Designs cater to a wide variety of clients including small to medium size building contractors, general builders and some large construction companies, they also work directly for domestic customers when required. The company provide solutions far beyond ‘off-the-shelf ’ products, benefitting from having the required skills in house especially in design and fabrication.
As well as splashbacks and balustrades, the company also supply bespoke door solutions. In response to the current market trend, the company offer flush, double glazed doors, manufactured in the UK, and can also customise them to your specific requirements.
When asked about the company’s plans for the future, Dominic concluded: “The company has grown fast since it started in 2011 as a 1 man band. 3 years later we have around 10 staff, both office and site based and we are looking to take on more.
Standard doors are available to be installed into any frame designed for side hung butthinges. The company uses Royd & Tucker H101, Hi-load lift off hinges, due to the weight of the doors and superb quality in the hinges, making installation effortless.
“We are also looking to move into bigger premises and expand the size of our in-house manufacturing area and to include more products.” T 01903 733 206 info@demon-designs.co.uk www.demon-designs.co.uk

Where tradition meets technology seamlessly Solar Slate is changing the face of solar PV. Its planningfriendly range of solar slates (also known as ‘solar tiles’) provide solar power from an innovative roof covering that blends seamlessly with traditional slate and replaces natural slate.
“As a technology, ours is unlike anything else that’s available. It truly takes roof integrated solar PV to a new dimension. “Even homes in historic or conservation areas can now tap into an endless supply of free, clean energy, with the added long-term financial benefit of guaranteed payments from the government’s Feed-In Tariffs.”
Unlike many of its competitors, Slate Multi produces a slate-effect finish that is close to seamless. It is not simply a tile-shaped solar panel, but a truly innovative piece of technology that really looks like slate.
Products have an unrivalled track record in gaining planning approval and offer no unsightly solar panels. It provides users with energy cost security and allows you to earn from your investment and protect yourself from electricity supply disruption.
Solar Slate’s original, British-designed solar PV slate, Solar Slate Traditional, is already established as a popular solution for achieving without the visual compromise of conventional solar panels. The more recently launched Solar Slate Multi offers the same unobtrusive finish at a price that’s 45% less than Solar Slate Traditional and is significantly faster to install.
Achieving this combination of performance and longevity as a building envelope, requires a product constructed using high-quality materials and sub components. The chassis of the product is aluminium finished with a hard anodized surface to four times conventional thickness. The cover sheet is low-sodium PV glass, and the solar cells are high performance mono units. Even the slate boundary lines are stove enamelled for long life. To maintain product quality, the units are produced in fully-accredited European manufacturing facilities.
Paul Nielson, Commercial Director at Solar Slate commented: “For the first time, it’s possible to take advantage of solar power without compromise. You can unhook from the fossil-fuelled lifestyle and make a real reduction in your carbon footprint.
The affordable, quick to install Solar Slate Multi doubles as a solar panel and a roof slate and seamlessly integrates into any slate roof. It is an important breakthrough that helps to achieve true environmental conservation – making clean energy possible without compromising British heritage.
Paul explained: “All of our products, including the Multi, are the result of British R&D excellence, with manufacturing taking place in fully-accredited European facilities. The Multi represents a further development of the technology pioneered by Solar Slate Traditional.
As part of the RES Group which has been established for over 30 years, Solar Slate is renowned for its quality products that have been on the market for over 7 years.
“All of our products are backed with a wealth of experience and a wide install base. Every project is a journey so we support our customers every step of the way, from supply and design through to installation and warranty. “ In terms of future plans, Solar Slate aim to continue to develop its quality products and services. Paul stated: “We are never content to simply stick with the original product; we are always keen to further the innovation

Kite Packaging expands tape offering Kite Packaging, the UK’s premier supplier of packaging, has kick-started the New Year with its first new product launch. Solvent tape has been added to Kite’s already impressive tape range, which currently includes hot melt, acrylic, low-noise and its own Envirotape - which has a smaller core so that 150 metres of tape can be held on one roll, ensuring less cardboard waste and supply chain cost savings. This is particularly useful when exporting products for long journeys, as the environmental changes from cold to warm will not affect the tape and keep products secure inside cartons. It is also commonly used in the food industry for this reason, as the strong adhesive is perfect for freezer storage.

Ecology Services News
SES
Combining ecology, planning & development As Specialists in providing ecological survey and advice with regard to development, land management, quarry restoration and local authority projects, Staffordshire Ecological Service’s ecologists have considerable experience liaising with Local Planning Authorities and Natural England to ensure smooth passage of your scheme. SES has worked with a number of clients to resolve frequent problems involving ecological issues. They provide protected species surveys, mitigation and licencing for Bats, Barn owls, Water voles, Otters, Badgers, White-clawed crayfish, Great Crested Newts and Reptiles. Their solutions range from habitat manipulation (development sites) to provide suitable areas for species away from working areas, location and design for bat housing, timetabling of building demolitions and when protected species licenses and surveys will be required prior to any works commencing. Re-development timetables can be thrown out of the window if ecological issues are not dealt with prior to formulating work schedules. Even when planning permission has been granted, protected species must be considered at all stages of work in order to keep companies within the law.
Staffordshire Ecological Services Ltd
Post development monitoring is important not only for the conservation of biodiversity but as a marketing opportunity for companies to provide examples of their competencies when submitting planning applications and to demonstrate their commitment to environmental management. Having worked extensively throughout the West Midlands, SES has forged excellent links with local and regional planners, councils, government agencies and businesses. Able to draw on a wealth of local knowledge, SES are uniquely placed to provide an insight into the ecological issues faced in the region and provide practical, costeffective solutions that benefit both biodiversity and the client. SES are ISO 14001 accredited with reports compliant to BS 42020:2013 Biodiversity-code of practice for planning and development. The company and staff are fully insured for all work.
