Commitment to Excellence

Over 40 years of pump design and manufacture Solutions UK is pleased to present Wanner International Ltd with the incredibly prestigious and industry acclaimed Commitment to Excellence award. Wanner International is home to the world’s leading range of seal-less multiple-diaphragm pumps, better known as HydraCell®. These heavy-duty pumps are suitable for both low and high pressure applications and combine rugged durability with compact size and high pumping efficiency. “Here at Wanner International, we are very easy to do business with,” commented Nick Herrington, Marketing & Technical Support Manager. “Our Hydra-Cell products feature a unique design which isn’t like any other pumps available in the market. Multiple diaphragms within the single pump head achieve a virtually pulseless liquid flow, eliminating the need for pulsation dampeners in the vast majority of instances.” Hydra-Cell pumps are used extensively for metering and dosing, liquid transfer, pressure injection and spray applications. A wide choice of pump head materials enables them to handle a wide range of liquids very successfully,

over 40 years, serving many different industrial sectors, including biodiesel, ceramic, chemical & petrochemical, pharmaceutical, environmental control, food & drink, industrial cleaning, power generation and marine sectors.

including corrosive and aggressive chemicals, solvents, acids and alkalis, hydrocarbons, natural gas liquids, polymers, aqueous ammonia, resins, slurries and wettable powders. Unlike other pumps such as gear, screw, piston or centrifugal types, that rely on vulnerable dynamic seals and packing to prevent leaks, the Hydra-Cell design has no dynamic seals to wear and leak. This gives them the ability to handle abrasive liquids and particulate matter. An example of this is the use of Hydra-Cell pumps for high pressure machine tool coolant delivery, where metal fines entrained within the coolant do not harm the Hydra-Cell pump. The family owned company has been operating for

The benefits of Hydra-Cell seal-less pump technology are also valued in mining & quarrying, oil & gas, paint, ink, paper, polyurethane foam production, reverse osmosis, steam generation, water & waste treatment, vehicle washing and steel manufacturing. Nick explained, “We have an extensive range with pumps suitable for pressures up to 345 Bar and flows up to 170 litres per minute. Our technology is unique and applicable to the widest range of pumping applications. If it flows…we can pump it.” CE marked, Hydra-Cell pumps meet the requirements of API 674 and the metering performance demands of API 675 in terms of repeatability, linearity and steady state accuracy, and for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, versions with ATEX Cat 2 Zone 1 & Cat 3 Zone 2 compliance are available.

“We want to continue growing at a good and steady rate,” Nick said when discussing the company’s future plans. “We have experienced excellent growth on a global basis throughout the history of the company. The recent recruitment of extra designers and engineer has enabled us to accelerate our product development to meet the everincreasing demands of our customers and we will be shortly bringing several new products to market.” Hydra-Cell pumps, spares and accessories are widely available locally, courtesy of the vast network of international partners and distributors. Technical support is readily available from Wanner International to address queries and provide advice on such matters as system design and pump selection; reassuring customers and distributors of Wanner International’s commitment to meeting their pumping needs effectively, economically and comprehensively. ICP® Accelerometers with Excellent Thermal Stability PCB® single and triaxial ICP® accelerometers are designed with a low temperature co-efficient, wide operating temperature range, and good broadband measurement resolution, making them ideal for powertrain development and powertrain NVH applications, or for any vibration measurement requiring tight control of amplitude sensitivity over a wide thermal gradient. With a temperature co-efficient as low as 0.005%/°F (0.009%/°C), these titanium housed and hermetically sealed units have a 10mV/g or 50mV/g sensitivity, a measurement frequency to 10kHz, and an operating temperature range from -100 to +325°F (-73 to +163°C). To alleviate the effects of high frequency overloads caused by metal-to-metal inputs, a low pass filter has been incorporated in all models, ensuring accurate data in the frequency range of interest. These sensors provide precision amplitude

data for test applications with large thermal shifts such as powertrain vibration testing, powertrain NVH, certain vehicle systems NVH tests, road load data acquisition, and durability testing in climatic chambers. Sensors are available in stud, adhesive and through hole mounting configurations. As with all PCB® instrumentation, these sensors are complemented with toll-free applications assistance, 24-hour technical support, and are backed by a no-risk policy that guarantees total customer satisfaction or your money refunded. Setting the standard for Composite Door Manufacturing The Association of Composite Door Manufacturers (ACDM) was strategically formed to promote and represent manufacturers of ‘composite’ doors – essentially, those made from more than one material. The new technology has progressively developed, leading to the creation of three different types of composite doors: Steel Faced, Thermoplastic faced (e.g. PVCu, ABS) and Thermoset Faced (e.g. Fibreglass and Carbon Fibre).

backgrounds within many facets of construction. The ACDM established a minimum standard for group involvement – based on actual product performance – meaning only composite door manufacturers who have achieved PAS 23 and PAS 24 with a UKAS test house can be considered for membership. Clarifying the necessary guidelines means all member companies can be relied upon to operate properly and professionally in a credible manner.

The rapid growth and increasing interest surrounding the original product resulted in the formation of this specialist group; a breakthrough which further cemented the innovation’s prime position in the housing market. The unified representative body purposefully strives to establish the recommended standards for these innovative doors, and actively seeks to maintain this level of expectation across the sector, through the provision of self-regulation and discipline.

One of the group’s main responsibilities is to remain knowledgeable in the field so they can accurately assist specifiers whilst seeking composite doors of a proven standard of security, weather resistance and performance. Liaising with technical and consultative experts involved in the development of policies within the building industry enables the members to keep fully updated with the latest protocols regarding external door products.

Residential Homes, London Bridge Vintry Court is a building development providing four stories of residential homes. The development utilises a box roof light for access to a communal roof top terrace in order to make the most of limited space, as well as to enhance the sense of community in the Bermondsey’s London Bridge Quarter building. Using rooflights for access and outdoor space A popular solution to making the most of space and light is to transform flat roofspace into an external amenity area. For Vintry Court, Alan Camp architects implemented the use of a box rooflight in order to transform the flat roof into a communal terrace for all residents. Box rooflights have grown in popularity across architect practices and so Gurj Bahra, the Project Architect, specified this solution in order to meet the project challenges.

Glazing Vision were delighted to supply their standard three wall mounted box rooflight for this project, measuring over 4 metres wide and almost 2.5 metres in span. Supplied in two sections, the box rooflight creates an approximate 50% clear opening, with one pane of

glass sliding over one fixed. This feature enabled the architect to make the most of precious outdoor space. Another advantage of installing this type of rooflight for access is its height when compared to sliding or hinged varieties. The rooflight forms a physical structure, meaning that there is no further requirement for balustrades to be installed, which reduces clutter on the roof as well as costs. Box rooflights and Aesthetics What is particularly impressive about this product is the relationship between the different materials used to manufacture the rooflight. Glass areas are maximised with comparatively little visible supporting framework, resulting in a clean, contemporary external aesthetic. Internally, the high distribution of glass ensures that large volumes of natural daylight are able to pervade the stairwell, uninterrupted by dense framework. A white powder coated frame also matches the interior décor of the building. Achievements This innovative solution meant that the requirement for additional, usable space was achieved. Installing Glazing Vision’s box rooflight not only provided access to a communal roof terrace with spectacular outdoor views of the London skyline, but most importantly, created a sense of inclusivity for all of the residents at Vintry Court. Making the most of mineral resources As a leading provider of specialised mineral materials and services for a range of industrial sectors, Francis Flower recovers, reclaims and recycles material from industry for the benefit of its customers and the environment. With over 50 years’ experience in milling, grinding, blending and storage of fine mineral powders, Francis Flower is equipped to fine mill more than 400,000 tonnes of mineral every year to as low as 40 microns.

desirability to purchasers. In some markets this has enabled the builder to offer higher asset value to buyers.

Its locations in Somerset, Cheshire and Cambridge, all have extensive silo storage facilities enabling multiple materials to be processed rapidly and without risk of contamination.

The use of GYPSOL based screeds over the underfloor heating systems reduces the operating costs of the heating system. Tests using efficient and correctly designed underfloor heating systems have shown that using anhydrite screeds can improve the co-efficient of performance of an underfloor heating system by up to 25%. Additionally

Francis Flower is the owner of the innovative UK market leading brand, Gypsol. The environmentally friendly anhydrite flowing screed binder is the forefront of liquid screed development and innovation. The Gypsol brand has grown significantly since its creation two years ago and has gained the majority of the market. Made mainly from a recycled material, Gypsol Screeds offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to labour intensive and problematic traditional sand cement screeds. Paul Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower, commented, “The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation. Since introducing the product to the market 2 years ago, we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales have soared. We provide the basis for your company to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for you to sell into. “Whether you are an architect, main contractor, self-builder or a flooring contractor, we offer the best advice so you have all the information necessary to maximise the benefit of Gypsol in your project.” The Solida system from Francis Flower (Northern) Ltd is designed to offer the mass housing market a highly cost-effective, efficient and environmentally friendly floor solution that combines easily accessible, existing technologies in innovative ways. The first process in changing to the Solida system involves the introduction of underfloor heating technologies into ground and separating floors in combination with GYPSOL based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. For surprisingly little increase in build cost, the Solida system delivers significant improvement in desirability and asset value, increased levels of useable space,

“The system offers added value due to increased useable floor space, improved desirability and ‘kerb appeal,’ reduced energy use and subsequent cost savings to occupiers/owners, improved environmental profile and future proof design for higher code values.” flow temperatures can be reduced by some 40 to 50 Celcius compared to the temperatures required for radiator systems or some 10 to 15 Celcius compared to underfloor heating systems in traditional sand cement screeds. This all adds to the desirability and helps justify a higher selling price. This also helps the builder to achieve higher code levels where

required and to gain extra code credits in coded sustainable developments. T +44 (0)1928 574574 T +44 (0)1749 841146 ff@francisflower.co.uk www.francisflower.co.uk www.gypsol.co.uk

reductions in heating operating costs and improvements in energy efficiency. Currently the mass housing market in general uses solid concrete or suspended type ground floors with timber joisted separating floors. In general the heating systems used are radiator central heating systems. The Solida system seeks to change this, such that the heating systems are underfloor heating on all floors coupled with energy efficient heat sources such as condensing gas boiler systems or renewable heat technologies such as air or ground source heat pumps which may be more appropriate to higher code and carbon neutral developments. The first principal of the Solida system is therefore the introduction of energy efficient underfloor heating systems along with GYPSOL screeds. There are a number of potential positive side effects of this. When a change is made from radiators to underfloor heating the occupier gains more useable space in each room by virtue of the fact that they no longer need to avoid placing furniture against radiators. The generally accepted figure for this is 8% to 10% more useable space. This offers a number of practical and commercial opportunities to the house builder. Paul explained, “We have seen based on evaluations by, and discussions with, major house builders that the use of underfloor heating, given the above points offers greater

is installed, these hazardous zones need to be examined. Can the facility be rearranged better, with improved guidance and traffic routes and with proper segregation of vehicles and pedestrians? Barriers are not just protective guards, they are guide ways to direct traffic and personnel safely around a facility.

Back in the ice age of facilities management – some time before the late-nineties, shall we say – your average warehouseman (and yes, let’s single out the male of the breed) took more of a caveman approach to procurement and layout. It was a bish-bosh strategy, not helped by other cavemen in the industry swinging similar clubs, which saw a lot of work-caves over-stacked, under-performing and in dire need of a healthy dose of care and attention.

The company’s scientific approach to safety puts segregation of vehicles and pedestrians first and will examine the whole layout of a facility and the potential forces of vehicles operating within it before fit-for-purpose barriers are strategically implemented to guide, organise and protect.

And there was one particular target that these primitive beings liked to aim especially hefty blows towards – Health & Safety. They didn’t like this young upstart coming in, telling them how to save lives, save money, protect the important things in a company. Didn’t they realise there was a business to run?

In the caveman’s mind, the barrier might seem like a fully functioning piece of strategic safety planning – but it’s nothing more than an accident waiting to happen.

It’s a traffic management process, combined with smart, safe, innovative products that have been welcomed by sophisticated facility managers at Nestlé, Heathrow Airport, DHL, Unilever and BMW, who all use A-SAFE barriers today. A-SAFE’s iFlex Range takes barrier protection to a new level – improved modularity, multidirectional functionality, hygiene sealed, maintenance free, extreme durability. Ecological Services Company of the Year

Combining ecology, planning & development protected species and we have access through the Wildlife Trusts to skilled experts around the country that we can call upon to provide advice and guidance. Our costeffective, innovative solutions help you stay on the right side of the law.

Solutions UK is extremely proud to present SES with its Ecological Services Company of the Year Award. As Specialists in providing ecological survey and advice with regard to development, land management, quarry restoration and local authority projects, SES’s ecologists have considerable experience liaising with Local Planning Authorities and Natural England to ensure smooth passage of your scheme. SES has worked with a number of clients to resolve frequent problems involving ecological issues. They provide protected species surveys, mitigation and licencing for Bats, Barn owls, Water voles, Otters, Badgers, White-clawed crayfish, Great Crested Newts and Reptiles. Their solutions range from habitat manipulation (development sites) to provide suitable areas for species away from working areas, location and design for bat housing, timetabling of building demolitions and when protected species licenses and surveys will be required prior to any works commencing. Armed with a team of dedicated, experienced staff, SES provides a complete service, offering advice and guidance to customers enabling them to choose the right process for them. All staff are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and hold protected species class licences from Natural England. SES specialise in providing client focused solutions to the ecological issues raised by much of today’s industry, development and local government activity. Dave Haslam, Principal Ecologist at Staffordshire Ecological Services commented, “We are a wholly owned subsidiary of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and specialise in providing ecological survey and advice to both the public and private sectors. “All staff are fully licenced to deal with

including large and small-scale development schemes in the residential, commercial, recreational, industrial and renewable energy sectors. “We work closely with our clients to provide the professional advice they need and help them manage their projects from the preliminary pre-application stage through to any detailed protected species surveys, licensing and mitigation works required. SES also can offer advice on habitat creation and ecological management schemes, provide ‘toolbox talks’ and can supervise projects as an Ecological Clerk of Works. Our clients include highways departments, local councils, planning and development agencies, construction companies, architects, charities and private individuals.”

“SES Ltd. is a not for profit ethical company and a member of the Association of Wildlife Trust Consultancies. Our profits go back into the parent organisation to fund conservation projects and wildlife education in Staffordshire.” Re-development timetables can be thrown out of the window if ecological issues are not dealt with prior to formulating work schedules. Even when planning permission has been granted, protected species must be considered at all stages of work in order to keep companies within the law. Frequent issues include the presence of bats and nesting birds within buildings due for demolition or refurbishment. Without the required lead in time for an ecologist to advise on these issues, which includes timing of works to cause minimum disturbance, the project costs can dramatically increase due to site closures or retention of derelict buildings until the protected species issues have been sorted out. Another frequent problem, especially within the West Midlands, is when development sites are cleared of vegetation to produce a flat clean site. Though the site managers feel they have removed the majority of ecological concerns with such actions, this type of habitat (bare ground) is attractive to a number of protected species including reptiles, invertebrates and migratory birds such as Little Ringed Plover and Black Redstart which are Schedule 1 birds in the Wildlife and Countryside Act and receive protection from disturbance once they have set up territories on a development site. The presence of these species on recently cleared sites causes delays in developments and may close the whole site from any activity for a minimum of 4 months.
