When Leonard Bellingham and Frank Stanley formalised their partnership on the 8th May 1915 by registering at Companies House, little did they know that their legacy would be an internationally recognised brand operating as part of a $3billion dollar business quoted on the New York stock exchange; truly representing the Best of Britain! Almost as soon as they started operations from their London basement site at No. 71 Hornsey Rise; they outgrew the space and moved to a larger facility at Markfield Road that became the home of Bellingham + Stanley up until 1976, when they moved to a purpose built manufacturing site in Tunbridge Wells from where the company still operates. Since first supplying the sugar
industry with refractometers and polarimeters for the purpose of payment and process control, Bellingham + Stanley quickly moved to other markets including the lucrative food & beverage industry, where to this day, their refractometers control the Brix, or concentration of liquid products made by many of the world’s most well-known brands. There have been many other milestones over the past 100 years. It is believed that when Bellingham + Stanley produced the Pocket refractometer in the 1930s, they were the first to take measurement to the field and still their hand held refractometers are commonly used within so many applications; from fruit growers, jam makers, automotive and aircraftengineers to plumbers installing solar heat source collectors. In 1946, Bellingham + Stanley exhibited at British Industries Fair at Olympia in London and even the then Queen, or
Queen Mother as we are more likely know her, and Princess Margaret took an interest at the show and then, following the rapid growth in technological advancement in the 1960s, Bellingham + Stanley quickly saw the need to digitise their instruments so that they could be used by unskilled operators within a factory environment. So when Bellingham + Stanley introduced the world’s first commercially successful automatic refractometer in 1980, customers like Pepsi, Britvic, Heinz and Nestle picked up the advantage offered by the new RFM80 Series refractometers and purchased them for use throughout their global operations. Today, like many

Solution Provider for Access Egress and Evacuation Solutions UK is proud to announce that SwallowEMP has been presented with its highly-regarded Commitment to Excellence profile. The Birmingham-based company was established in November 2008 by Greg and Julia Pons and has since gone from strength to strength, covering areas across both the UK and Ireland. It is principally known for providing quality and trustworthy solutions for access, egress, evacuation and taking goods and cargo up and down stairwells, but training and maintenance services are also available. SwallowEMP offers stair climbers for both people and goods, as well as many other additional products such as specialist wheelchairs, security chairs, stretcher carriers, wheelchair movers, crawlers, platform/train/pool lifts, evacuation & transfer slings and signs (amongst other items). “We offer a range of products – we advise our customers what works for their scenario and they then choose,” commented Julia Pons, Director at SwallowEMP. “Most other companies have one design and will always put that prototype ahead of looking for any other options for the customer that may be more adaptable – this distinction makes us stand out from our competitors.” One of SwallowEMP’s most popular products is the Super Trac TRE52, a portable powered wheel chair evacuation platform and stair climber. This takes wheelchair users up and down stairways with considerable ease, eliminating the need to try and make them transfer out of their wheelchairs needlessly. Its newest product is Evacu8Me, a mobile app that assists with the safe evacuation of people within a building. It allows requests for evacuation plans to be downloaded to a user’s smartphone via a data connection, containing instructions on routes, refuge areas and locations of evacuation equipment; essentially enabling the completion of an efficient evacuation plan. This data can be monitored and given to emergency services if the necessity for an evacuation occurs.
2
“Our main clients are mostly schools, universities and public buildings; any facility where it is unknown who is to enter at any particular time,” continued Julia. “Our products are basically for those who think about the ‘Spirit of the Equality Act’ as opposed to just ticking a box for evacuation only. “For example, if you have wheelchair users in a building why wouldn’t you have the piece of equipment that can bring them and their wheelchair out? There’s no point having many other evacuation chairs that won’t enable the person in the wheelchair to get out of the premises.” When discussing the business’s progressive path, Julia concluded: “We are currently working with a Dutch company to promote the Evacuation App to Holland and surrounding countries. We are seeking agents who have an appetite to promote our goods and services - our range benefits many people and companies with the stair climbers for people and also goods.” SwallowEMP ensures to promote its products and services by attending several trade shows throughout the year. Previous exhibitions it has attended includes the Facilities Show (NEC), the Facilities Management Show (London ExCeL), NASHiCS, Trade Days (NEC), Brand Yorkshire and FM Ireland. Heat and ventilation control switches are also available for those working in the farming and agricultural sectors, railways and solar PV installation. “I would say our capability to provide an excellent
service is our key differentiator,” commented Mike Cooke, Sales Director at Salzer UK, when asked about the company’s position amongst its competitors. “This is supported by our inbuilt benefits of a top quality product using materials of a high calibre that provide the end user with safety and reliability. The main company ethic is a high emphasis on customer service, and always providing a solution that effectively meets customer demands. We pride ourselves on our innovation, technology and quality.” “Additionally, we are always communicating with our customers, discussing the ways we can make their installation of switches quicker and easier - after all, time is money, and we are a time saver. This is why we place a particular focus on quality and technology; we want our customers to know that when they install a Salzer switch, and when it’s done correctly, they can comfortably fit and forget for the service life of the switch.” Salzer UK has the ability to build special design control switches, including some with gold flashed contacts for specific low voltage/current applications. Its latest addition is its new True DC Switch Disconnector; launched predominantly for the solar/PV installer market, this product has a minimum 5ms arc quenching time for maximum performance and long life. A new production line assembly has also been installed in order to achieve its target of reaching delivery times more swiftly, resulting in a more efficient service for its everincreasing customer base. SmartBeltz: Safety, Security, Style & Substance Solutions UK is pleased to announce that Smartbeltz has achieved its well-regarded Commitment to Excellence profile. Despite being a very new company – having been set up just last year – SmartBeltz has already been pinpointed as a brand with exceptional innovation and incredible potential. This is largely due to the fact that its sole product is a revolutionary creation which is likely to make a significant impact to all of its customers. A ‘Smart Belt’ is a wearable monitoring device which prevents danger, as it assists people who suddenly find themselves in dangerous situations. This practical safety tool comes in the form of a discreet buckle which can be attached to normal belts as an effective camouflage to comfortably fit everyday outfits with both function and style. The sophisticated belt works via its integrated panic button, which once activated, automatically contacts either a family member or the emergency services per the wearer’s request. It also triggers the attached camera and GPS, in order to determine the individual’s exact location and to capture their surroundings, so any unsafe circumstances can be instantaneously observed and dealt with accordingly. “There is currently nothing else like this in the market,” commented Jason Lassiter, founder of Smartbeltz. “A belt buckle with an alert button incorporated – which at the same time is designed to look like a normal accessory - is a completely unique product which will serve great purpose for many people.
“The audio and video is a useful feature which can be used as a form of evidence after particularly difficult scenarios (as the recordings can be used to replay the events as they unfolded). The belt also has the capability to store the contact numbers of three individuals who will be immediately contacted after the panic button has been pressed.” Smartbeltz are suitable for both children (aged 5 and above) and adults, and will help them to feel safer and more protected whilst out and about. They are also of great value to those who can be considered the more vulnerable members of society, such as the elderly, the physically and mentally disabled or people suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Glamox has effectively taken the many years of experience-based knowledge of LED lighting and applied it to the products specifically developed for the marine and oil & gas markets. “We have been busy developing products specifically incorporating LED technology,” explained Alan Mellows, Sales Director at Glamox UK. “LED technology is our prime focus for new product development. We are 100% committed to LED lighting and the creation of new products addressing all technical aspects to ensure that the maximum benefits of the technology are incorporated, which is a pretty unique element of ours when compared to similar organisations.” As the company’s ethic is strongly centred on cooperation, quality and a commitment to excellent
customer service, using the retailer’s services is incredibly advantageous. Its products and solutions are developed and tested by specialist engineers in its designated research and testing facilities and are manufactured and certified in accordance with all of the associated quality and environmental standards.
The Glamox Group owns a selection of quality lighting brands including Glamox, Aqua Signal, Luxo, Høvik Lys and Norselight. These acquisitions have enabled the company to expand greatly; its headquarters are based in Oslo with manufacturing facilities in Norway, Europe, Canada and Asia. “As a company we are performing really well,” Alan said when asked about Glamox’s recent developments. “Our sales are growing significantly year on year with double digit growth of LED lighting sales. We also have an exclusive 3D lighting design software, a programme which enables customers to develop their own lighting schemes.” The Glamox team will be attending Offshore Europe
Specialist supplier of interconnect products
Supplying an extensive range of materials from a broad variety of specialist vendors and shipping to manufacturers, sub-contractors, installers & resellers worldwide, enables AP Technology to deliver an end to end solution for all your interconnect needs. Upon receiving the prestigious Company of the Year Award, Stephen Bidwell, Founder of AP Technology, commented, “The last twelve months have been very exciting but also frustrating. Exciting, because new products have opened new markets and allowed us to expand in those where we already have a presence, with some exciting and high profile projects. It has been frustrating as we have recognised the need to make changes in order to cope with growth and these cannot always be made as quickly as you would wish! “We set ourselves an aggressive sales target with growth of 30% which we have exceeded. Our team has also doubled in numbers in that last 2 years. Most recently, our production manager has completed an IPC/WHMA-A-620 Certified Trainer course which now allows us to develop in-house, the skills of our cable assembly production team. A review of our processes midway through last year has shown that we have a robust framework in place to deal with the current and expected growth. “This award is recognition of all the hard work put in by our team during the past year and before and a fantastic motivator for the year going forward.” Established in 2001, AP Technology provides customised support for every application. Stephen explained, “We are interconnection specialists providing outstanding customer service and value for money. We have assembled a range of products from a select group of world class manufacturers whose high functionality, high quality and reliability give us the best opportunity to achieve our aim of offering the best technical and cost effective solutions for our customers. “Our principal differentiator is our service, in addition to our range of standard products we offer a variety of customised products and supply chain solutions to meet your individual requirements.” AP technology works very closely with OEMs from a broad range of industries including machine builders, process manufacturing, automation, motion engineering and renewables. “We aim to provide the end user with the best possible benefits; creating products to help them to calculate and reduce their total cost of ownership,” Alan commented. “There are a number of advantages. One advantage is that you use less energy, so power consumption is significantly reduced as a result. You will also see a decrease in your operational costs due to a significant reduction in terms of maintenance and extended operational life. The products have an extended lifetime and warranty, complete with a five year no-quibble guarantee.”

assembly manufacturing, scheduled & call off orders, a cable cutting service and custom labels & packaging with no minimum order value on stocked products and global shipping.
Paul Draper, Operations Manager at DMS, said “The work that we do here is second to none. Our company stands out because we offer added value and excellence to everyone, and we are incredibly customer-focused. The DMS Plastics ethic is all about quality, cost and delivery - we provide the complete package to meet the needs of all of our clients.
The core product for the business remains the Intercontec range of circular connectors for power and signal applications. Originally designed for use in factory automation and drive system applications, their range has continually evolved and continues to be developed to deliver solutions to a range of industries including food, packaging, printing, robotics, entertainment and renewable energy. Recently introduced to AP Technology range is the Hygienic multipole connectors designed for use within the food and beverage industries. The housings are constructed of materials resistant to detergents and disinfectants used within the food and beverage processing environment. Their design facilitates the cleaning of surfaces that could potentially come into contact with food; their high IP ratings allow jet washing without threat of water ingress. Another exciting new product is Alinduflex cable – a stranded aluminium cable with high grade outer jacket which performs to an equal or greater standard as traditional copper cable such as H07RN-F. AP Technology was commissioned to supply cable assemblies using the Alinduflex cable for an innovative new global motor racing formula which required a high current capacity. The Alinduflex solution gave the client a system which met all their technical requirements and with a weight saving of 60%. Gypsol has been chosen by Solutions UK for accomplishing its prestigious Commitment to Excellence profile. Manufactured and owned by Francis Flower, the leading supplier of specialised mineral materials and services established in 1953, Gypsol acts as an exceptional alternative to sand/cement screeds and polished concrete. The high calibre anhydrite free-flowing floor screed binder is meticulously manufactured in the UK and makes for the perfect supplement to underfloor heating. Having been established more than five decades ago, Francis Flower’s extensive experience in the milling, grinding, blending and storage of fine mineral powders has secured itself as a company you can trust to provide quality results. The business has worked comprehensively to process and stock an impressive range of products, which includes milled anhydrite, marble, bentonite and granulated & powdered
minerals (as well as Gypsol anhydrite screed binder). The leading brand has fast become a staple product in the development and innovation of liquid screed. When compared to the more outdated and traditional flooring systems, Gypsol has proven to be more advantageous in a multitude of ways. Not only is it significantly cheaper, less problematic and more environmentally friendly (as it is constructed predominantly from a recycled material), it is also incredibly easy to apply.
Architects, designers, main contractors, self-builders and flooring contractors utilise this specialist ingredient in order to effectively enhance their industrial projects. The incorporation of Gypsol over underfloor heating systems lessens costs and increases sustainability, and tests have confirmed that those using anhydrite screeds can improve the co-efficient performance of an underfloor heating system by up to 25%. In addition, flow temperatures can be reduced by 40 to 50 Celsius (compared to the temperatures required for radiator systems). A recent addition to the Francis Flower portfolio is the Solida System, which is designed to provide a whole house heating solution by combining existing technologies and the Gypsol based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. The process involves incorporating Gypsol screed in separating floors in order to maximise desirability, asset value and useable space. “This system enables the screed to go on the first floor on timber
floors, ensuring homeowners encapsulate underfloor heating effectively,” Paul explained. “As a sustainable alternative to radiators, the Solida System improves a house builder’s green credentials massively as it reduces energy use. We now have a number of customers using the Solida System, including the renowned timber frame manufacturers Oakworth Homes.” Gypsol will be showcased at many trade shows over the course of the next two years, as the company has confirmed its attendance at five homebuilding and renovating shows. They will also be making an appearance at the Build Show 2015 in Birmingham in October and the GreenBuild Expo in Manchester this November. Paul Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower, commented: “The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation. Since introducing the product two and a half years ago we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales have soared. We provide the basis for your company to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for you to sell into.”

“As with all good products, the original Muller’s cart was created out of a need for something better.” The humble beginnings of the Smart Cart In 1975, Brigadier General Henry Muller of Santa Barbara in California realised that his 60 year old wife was struggling to man the wheelbarrow in their stable without back pain. Understanding how much his wife loved her horses, he set to designing and creating the first easy to use, lightweight, durable, well-balanced stable cart in the market which he called The Muller’s Stablemate. It became successful in the American market, was renamed ‘The Muller’s Smart Cart’ and is now made in Goreham, Maine. Four years ago David Fortune’s wife purchased a Smart Cart having seen one belonging to a friend. He put it together for her and thought it was a fantastic product. Later, after discovering that his aged mother’s gardener was struggling to dispose of grass cuttings from her vast lawns, he decided to buy her one but discovered that they were no longer available in the UK. David ordered her Smart Cart directly from Maine and offered to be Muller’s Smart Carts’ new distributor in the UK. They appointed him and Smart Carts UK was born. What makes the Smart Cart so ‘smart’? “The carts are perfectly balanced, they are light, easily manoeuvrable and very little lifting is required. They’re also built to last decades - 20 to 30 years is not unusual.
“The weight of the load in a Smart Cart in motion is balanced over the wheels. Unlike the traditional wheelbarrow design – with a single wheel at one end of the tub and lifting required on the other end – only a little leverage - not lifting of the Smart Cart - is necessary to move the centre of gravity over the wheels, making the cart ideal for those with mobility issues and back pain. Its pair of wheels makes it completely stable and controllable with one hand. “Due to the materials used in a Smart Cart, they are known to last well over 25 years,” David continued. “Each product comes with a 5 year warranty, but the combination of the aircraft quality aluminium alloy frame, the steel cross member, axle and wheels and the exceptionally tough, high impact polyethylene of the tub makes the cart tough, light and virtually indestructible.”
summer party will go with a swing! Gardeners will rejoice in this long-lasting wheelbarrow alternative. The great ‘tip forward’ design makes it simple to unload soil, grass cuttings and even paving stones. Originally designed specifically for stable work, the Smart Cart makes mucking out a pleasure it never used to be!” With huge capacity (7 and 12 cu ft options), two colours and wheel sizes (16” and 20” diameter) available, why not invest in a Smart Cart? Rust resistant and leak free, whatever the season. A Smart Cart makes child’s play out of transporting your straw, hay, feed or heavy fertiliser from A to B. Timber Engineering Experts in construction. Its sturdy equipment and far-reaching services have been utilised by all kinds of institutions, including schools, hospitals and medical centres. In order to better manage the ever-increasing industry demand, the company has recently moved to bigger premises in Redditch. This relocation to a suitably larger and more up-to-date facility emphasises how the company has flourished ever since its establishment.
Solutions UK is extremely proud to feature Scotts Timber Engineering Ltd with the industry-acclaimed Best of Britain profile through its concentrated commitment to excellence. The family business, which is based in the West Midlands, was formed three years ago by David Scott, Richard Evans, Peter Waddup and James Scott. The specialists design and manufacture various construction materials using only the latest engineering software, conducted in-house to the highest possible standards. At a flexible and manageable price, the company can provide expert solutions (complete with comprehensive advice) for any required application, in order to ensure complete customer satisfaction. The industry experts supply a vast selection of highly robust roof trusses, easi-joint metal web joists, spandrel panels and feature trusses. The individually designed roof trusses are attached to provide a structural framework to support the roof fabric of a building, ceilings and floors. These prefabricated timber components are made from strengthgraded timber and joined together with punched metal plate connectors. Another popular product is the easijoint metal web joists, which are meticulously designed
to provide businesses with a cost-effective alternative to the more traditional timber beams. Provided as part of the company’s roofing package, the easy-to-install timber spandrel panels are used to replace the need for a masonry wall. They effectively act as a pre-assembled solution for use in separating walls or external gables. “Security guards can get tired and fed up whilst working 12 hour shifts and drop to sleep – at Acclaimed Security this won’t happen because our routines and systems are specifically designed to tackle this issue. Our technology can track precise movements through hourly calls, mobile responses and periodic checks, with the GuardSafe troll logging system operating on a real-time basis. “This ensures that clients have access to the specific times of calls and patrols – meaning they can rest assured the job is being done properly and that both premises and occupants are safe and free from intrusion. This is an extremely unique feature because it usually isn’t possible to check what is happening at an establishment right there and then.” As well as the Manned Guarding Services, Key Holding and Alarmed Response Services are also available. This is designed explicitly for instances whereby property is left unoccupied for any period of time and out-of-hours access is likely to be required. Policies can be put into place to ensure the correct individuals have access to the premises at any time, upon the specifications decided by the company. This service is a safe, trustworthy and extremely cost-effective solution to issue that often preoccupies many businesses. The security specialist employs a mobile fleet of both marked and unmarked vehicles operated by trained officers utilising video recording equipment to ensure properties are kept safe and secure, reducing crime and increasing awareness. 5 Ways to Prepare for Document Q Document Q is part of a new series of government documents due to come into effect on October 1, 2015. It features a set of guidelines designed to help builders and contractors to meet the legal requirements outlined in the Building Regulations 2010 for England. Document Q is particularly relevant for the door and window industry, as it’s focused on “easily accessible doors and windows”. According to Building Regulations 2010 for England, all easily accessible doors and windows should be able to withstand physical attacks from casual or opportunistic burglars. Document Q sets out, in clear and concise terms, how to ensure that every window and door you install is secure to the relevant legal standards.
Given that it’s essentially a move to make the information included in the current regulations clearer and more accessible, it’s likely that your practices are already compliant with Document Q. However, it’s always a good idea to ensure you’re completely up to date when it comes to home security, so it’s still essential that you take some time to familiarise yourself with Document Q. The Smart New Way to Control Heating and Hot Water
Easytherm has arrived. After two years of scrupulous designing and planning, the business has finally launched itself into the ‘smart’ heating and hot water controller arena, tackling it head on with its first internet-based boiler controller. Located in Bletchley Park, the manufacturer retails innovative heating and hot water controllers which have been thoroughly developed and tested through large scale pilots and in-house ‘user-testing’. Managing Director Paul Burke stated that Easytherm is unique in many ways: “First and foremost, we put the customer at the heart of our set up,” he explained. “Energy represents one of the highest expenditure items in any domestic household, averaging over £1,300/year. With over 60% of this expenditure being attributed to heating and hot water use, anything that can be done to reduce these costs is critical.

“At Easytherm we wanted to develop something that puts the customer in total control of their energy use. Gone are the fiddly, almost impossible to understand programmers and controls, and in comes a simple three button, easy to view controller. Better still, with connection to the internet you can control every aspect of your home heating and hot water requirements anywhere, anytime, with the simple downloadable app.” It seems blatantly apparent that in terms of installation and configuration, nothing could be easier. As it is the only single box solution with Wi-Fi built in, there is no need to install hubs, gateways or receivers. “In the majority of cases there is no need for any further rewiring or reconfiguration; simply remove the old unit and switch with the new Easytherm,” Paul concluded. “We are already planning big things for the future; with a new, lowest price in market, 4 channel and remote thermostat soon to be released this will be a massive step forward in the boiler controller market as we create with even greater control throughout the whole home.” Contact T 01865 522583 info@easytherm.co.uk www.easytherm.co.uk
