When Leonard Bellingham and Frank Stanley formalised their partnership on the 8th May 1915 by registering at Companies House, little did they know that their legacy would be an internationally recognised brand operating as part of a $3billion dollar business quoted on the New York stock exchange; truly representing the Best of Britain! Almost as soon as they started operations from their London basement site at No. 71 Hornsey Rise; they outgrew the space and moved to a larger facility at Markfield Road that became the home of Bellingham + Stanley up until 1976, when they moved to a purpose built manufacturing site in Tunbridge Wells from where the company still operates. Since first supplying the sugar

industry with refractometers and polarimeters for the purpose of payment and process control, Bellingham + Stanley quickly moved to other markets including the lucrative food & beverage industry, where to this day, their refractometers control the Brix, or concentration of liquid products made by many of the world’s most well-known brands. There have been many other milestones over the past 100 years. It is believed that when Bellingham + Stanley produced the Pocket refractometer in the 1930s, they were the first to take measurement to the field and still their hand held refractometers are commonly used within so many applications; from fruit growers, jam makers, automotive and aircraftengineers to plumbers installing solar heat source collectors. In 1946, Bellingham + Stanley exhibited at British Industries Fair at Olympia in London and even the then Queen, or

Queen Mother as we are more likely know her, and Princess Margaret took an interest at the show and then, following the rapid growth in technological advancement in the 1960s, Bellingham + Stanley quickly saw the need to digitise their instruments so that they could be used by unskilled operators within a factory environment. So when Bellingham + Stanley introduced the world’s first commercially successful automatic refractometer in 1980, customers like Pepsi, Britvic, Heinz and Nestle picked up the advantage offered by the new RFM80 Series refractometers and purchased them for use throughout their global operations. Today, like many

Solution Provider for Access Egress and Evacuation Solutions UK is proud to announce that SwallowEMP has been presented with its highly-regarded Commitment to Excellence profile. The Birmingham-based company was established in November 2008 by Greg and Julia Pons and has since gone from strength to strength, covering areas across both the UK and Ireland. It is principally known for providing quality and trustworthy solutions for access, egress, evacuation and taking goods and cargo up and down stairwells, but training and maintenance services are also available. SwallowEMP offers stair climbers for both people and goods, as well as many other additional products such as specialist wheelchairs, security chairs, stretcher carriers, wheelchair movers, crawlers, platform/train/pool lifts, evacuation & transfer slings and signs (amongst other items). “We offer a range of products – we advise our customers what works for their scenario and they then choose,” commented Julia Pons, Director at SwallowEMP. “Most other companies have one design and will always put that prototype ahead of looking for any other options for the customer that may be more adaptable – this distinction makes us stand out from our competitors.” One of SwallowEMP’s most popular products is the Super Trac TRE52, a portable powered wheel chair evacuation platform and stair climber. This takes wheelchair users up and down stairways with considerable ease, eliminating the need to try and make them transfer out of their wheelchairs needlessly. Its newest product is Evacu8Me, a mobile app that assists with the safe evacuation of people within a building. It allows requests for evacuation plans to be downloaded to a user’s smartphone via a data connection, containing instructions on routes, refuge areas and locations of evacuation equipment; essentially enabling the completion of an efficient evacuation plan. This data can be monitored and given to emergency services if the necessity for an evacuation occurs.

2

“Our main clients are mostly schools, universities and public buildings; any facility where it is unknown who is to enter at any particular time,” continued Julia. “Our products are basically for those who think about the ‘Spirit of the Equality Act’ as opposed to just ticking a box for evacuation only. “For example, if you have wheelchair users in a building why wouldn’t you have the piece of equipment that can bring them and their wheelchair out? There’s no point having many other evacuation chairs that won’t enable the person in the wheelchair to get out of the premises.” When discussing the business’s progressive path, Julia concluded: “We are currently working with a Dutch company to promote the Evacuation App to Holland and surrounding countries. We are seeking agents who have an appetite to promote our goods and services - our range benefits many people and companies with the stair climbers for people and also goods.” SwallowEMP ensures to promote its products and services by attending several trade shows throughout the year. Previous exhibitions it has attended includes the Facilities Show (NEC), the Facilities Management Show (London ExCeL), NASHiCS, Trade Days (NEC), Brand Yorkshire and FM Ireland. Sälzer has employed multiple technically trained agents and distributors who are based across the globe; qualified specialists situated in Australia, South Africa, Singapore, China and Kuwait (plus various other European and Scandinavian countries) to ensure its excellent services and support system can be employed to clients internationally. Salzer UK serves industries covering several different areas where industrial electrical switches can be used; its products are used extensively by electrical contractors, control panel builders and welding machine manufacturers. Heat and ventilation control switches are also available for those working in the farming and agricultural sectors, railways and solar PV installation. “I would say our capability to provide an excellent

service is our key differentiator,” commented Mike Cooke, Sales Director at Salzer UK, when asked about the company’s position amongst its competitors. “This is supported by our inbuilt benefits of a top quality product using materials of a high calibre that provide the end user with safety and reliability. The main company ethic is a high emphasis on customer service, and always providing a solution that effectively meets customer demands. We pride ourselves on our innovation, technology and quality.” “Additionally, we are always communicating with our customers, discussing the ways we can make their installation of switches quicker and easier - after all, time is money, and we are a time saver. This is why we place a particular focus on quality and technology; we want our customers to know that when they install a Salzer switch, and when it’s done correctly, they can comfortably fit and forget for the service life of the switch.” Salzer UK has the ability to build special design control switches, including some with gold flashed contacts for specific low voltage/current applications. Its latest addition is its new True DC Switch Disconnector; launched predominantly for the solar/PV installer market, this product has a minimum 5ms arc quenching time for maximum performance and long life. SmartBeltz: Safety, Security, Style & Substance Solutions UK is pleased to announce that Smartbeltz has achieved its well-regarded Commitment to Excellence profile. Despite being a very new company – having been set up just last year – SmartBeltz has already been pinpointed as a brand with exceptional innovation and incredible potential. This is largely due to the fact that its sole product is a revolutionary creation which is likely to make a significant impact to all of its customers. A ‘Smart Belt’ is a wearable monitoring device which prevents danger, as it assists people who suddenly find themselves in dangerous situations. This practical safety tool comes in the form of a discreet buckle which can be attached to normal belts as an effective camouflage to comfortably fit everyday outfits with both function and style. The sophisticated belt works via its integrated panic button, which once activated, automatically contacts either a family member or the emergency services per the wearer’s request. It also triggers the attached camera and GPS, in order to determine the individual’s exact location and to capture their surroundings, so any unsafe circumstances can be instantaneously observed and dealt with accordingly. “There is currently nothing else like this in the market,” commented Jason Lassiter, founder of Smartbeltz. “A belt buckle with an alert button incorporated – which at the same time is designed to look like a normal accessory - is a completely unique product which will serve great purpose for many people.

“The audio and video is a useful feature which can be used as a form of evidence after particularly difficult scenarios (as the recordings can be used to replay the events as they unfolded). The belt also has the capability to store the contact numbers of three individuals who will be immediately contacted after the panic button has been pressed.” Smartbeltz are suitable for both children (aged 5 and above) and adults, and will help them to feel safer and more protected whilst out and about. They are also of great value to those who can be considered the more vulnerable members of society, such as the elderly, the physically and mentally disabled or people suffering from Alzheimer’s.

across 123 countries. “We have these high hopes because we want to make a difference; this product can essentially save lives, and here at Smartbeltz that is our main goal. Glamox has effectively taken the many years of experience-based knowledge of LED lighting and applied it to the products specifically developed for the marine and oil & gas markets. “We have been busy developing products specifically incorporating LED technology,” explained Alan Mellows, Sales Director at Glamox UK. “LED technology is our prime focus for new product development. We are 100% committed to LED lighting and the creation of new products addressing all technical aspects to ensure that the maximum benefits of the technology are incorporated, which is a pretty unique element of ours when compared to similar organisations.” As the company’s ethic is strongly centred on cooperation, quality and a commitment to excellent

customer service, using the retailer’s services is incredibly advantageous. Its products and solutions are developed and tested by specialist engineers in its designated research and testing facilities and are manufactured and certified in accordance with all of the associated quality and environmental standards.

The Glamox Group owns a selection of quality lighting brands including Glamox, Aqua Signal, Luxo, Høvik Lys and Norselight. These acquisitions have enabled the company to expand greatly; its headquarters are based in Oslo with manufacturing facilities in Norway, Europe, Canada and Asia. “As a company we are performing really well,” Alan said when asked about Glamox’s recent developments. “Our sales are growing significantly year on year with double digit growth of LED lighting sales. We also have an exclusive 3D lighting design software, a programme which enables customers to develop their own lighting schemes.” The Glamox team will be attending Offshore Europe

Specialist supplier of interconnect products

Supplying an extensive range of materials from a broad variety of specialist vendors and shipping to manufacturers, sub-contractors, installers & resellers worldwide, enables AP Technology to deliver an end to end solution for all your interconnect needs. Upon receiving the prestigious Company of the Year Award, Stephen Bidwell, Founder of AP Technology, commented, “The last twelve months have been very exciting but also frustrating. Exciting, because new products have opened new markets and allowed us to expand in those where we already have a presence, with some exciting and high profile projects. It has been frustrating as we have recognised the need to make changes in order to cope with growth and these cannot always be made as quickly as you would wish! “We set ourselves an aggressive sales target with growth of 30% which we have exceeded. Our team has also doubled in numbers in that last 2 years. Most recently, our production manager has completed an IPC/WHMA-A-620 Certified Trainer course which now allows us to develop in-house, the skills of our cable assembly production team. A review of our processes midway through last year has shown that we have a robust framework in place to deal with the current and expected growth. “This award is recognition of all the hard work put in by our team during the past year and before and a fantastic motivator for the year going forward.” Established in 2001, AP Technology provides customised support for every application. Stephen explained, “We are interconnection specialists providing outstanding customer service and value for money. We have assembled a range of products from a select group of world class manufacturers whose high functionality, high quality and reliability give us the best opportunity to achieve our aim of offering the best technical and cost effective solutions for our customers. “Our principal differentiator is our service, in addition to our range of standard products we offer a variety of customised products and supply chain solutions to meet your individual requirements.” AP technology works very closely with OEMs from a broad range of industries including machine builders, process manufacturing, automation, motion engineering and renewables. Paul Draper, Operations Manager at DMS, said “The work that we do here is second to none. Our company stands out because we offer added value and excellence to everyone, and we are incredibly customer-focused. The DMS Plastics ethic is all about quality, cost and delivery - we provide the complete package to meet the needs of all of our clients.

The core product for the business remains the Intercontec range of circular connectors for power and signal applications. Originally designed for use in factory automation and drive system applications, their range has continually evolved and continues to be developed to deliver solutions to a range of industries including food, packaging, printing, robotics, entertainment and renewable energy. Recently introduced to AP Technology range is the Hygienic multipole connectors designed for use within the food and beverage industries. The housings are constructed of materials resistant to detergents and disinfectants used within the food and beverage processing environment. Their design facilitates the cleaning of surfaces that could potentially come into contact with food; their high IP ratings allow jet washing without threat of water ingress. Another exciting new product is Alinduflex cable – a stranded aluminium cable with high grade outer jacket which performs to an equal or greater standard as traditional copper cable such as H07RN-F. AP Technology was commissioned to supply cable assemblies using the Alinduflex cable for an innovative new global motor racing formula which required a high current capacity. The Alinduflex solution gave the client a system which met all their technical requirements and with a weight saving of 60%.
