100 Years of Excellence

Centenary celebrations for leading scientific instrument manufacturer Bellingham + Stanley commonly used within so many applications; from fruit growers, jam makers, automotive and aircraft-engineers to plumbers installing solar heat source collectors.

When Leonard Bellingham and Frank Stanley formalised their partnership on the 8th May 1915 by registering at Companies House, little did they know that their legacy would be an internationally recognised brand operating as part of a $3billion dollar business quoted on the New York stock exchange; truly representing the Best of Britain! Almost as soon as they started operations from their London basement site at No. 71 Hornsey Rise; they outgrew the space and moved to a larger facility at Markfield Road that became the home of Bellingham + Stanley up until 1976, when they moved to a purpose built manufacturing site in Tunbridge Wells from where the company still operates.

Since first supplying the sugar industry with refractometers and polarimeters for the purpose of payment and process control, Bellingham + Stanley quickly moved to other markets including the lucrative food & beverage industry, where to this day, their refractometers control the Brix, or concentration of liquid products made by many of the world's most well-known brands. There have been many other milestones over the past 100 years. It is believed that when Bellingham + Stanley produced the Pocket refractometer in the 1930s, they were the first to take measurement to the field and still their hand held refractometers are

In 1946, Bellingham + Stanley exhibited at British Industries Fair at Olympia in London and even the then Queen, or Queen Mother as we are more likely know her, and Princess Margaret took an interest at the show and then, following the rapid growth in technological advancement in the 1960s, Bellingham + Stanley quickly saw the need to digitise their instruments so that they could be used by unskilled operators within a factory environment. So when Bellingham + Stanley introduced the world’s first commercially successful automatic refractometer in 1980, customers like Pepsi, Britvic, Heinz and Nestle picked up the advantage offered by the new RFM80 Series refractometers and purchased them for use throughout their global operations. Today, like many others, they remain as loyal customers of its successor, the RFM340 refractometer, seen by many as the world’s first choice refractometer for food, beverage, pharmaceutical and industrial applications.

not only prided itself on supplying high quality products, including a full range of UKAS Certified Reference Materials manufactured in accordance with ISO 17025, they also operate ethically and in a sustainable manner. Complimenting ISO 9001:2008 quality management accreditation and recently awarded Safecontractor certification, Bellingham + Stanley has recently undergone the final assessment processes of ISO 14001 (Environmental)

and ISO 18001 (Health & Safety) and has been recommended for accreditation, which the company hopes to receive at their Centenary celebrations being held at Penshurst Place & Gardens this coming June. Paul Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower, commented, “The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation. Since introducing the product to the market 2 years ago, we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales have soared. We provide the basis for your company to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for you to sell into. “Whether you are an architect, main contractor, self-builder or a flooring

contractor, we offer the best advice so you have all the information necessary to maximise the benefit of Gypsol in your project.”

GYPSOL anhydrite screed binder: The new name from an established manufacturer:

• Offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to labour intensive and problematic traditional sand cement screeds

• Can be used with or without underfloor heating • Well suited to all building types. Whether you are an architect, designer, main contractor, self builder or a flooring contractor, our website is designed to ensure that you have at your fingertips all of the information neccessary to maximise the benefit of GYPSOL screed in your project. We will be attending at the following shows: 25th–27th September 2015 The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show – Excel London 6th–8th October 2015 UK Construction Week – NEC Birmingham 24th–25th October 2015 The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show – Edinburgh 6th–8th November 2015 The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show – Northern (Harrogate) 10th–11th November 2015 Greenbuild Expo – Manchester 21st–22nd November 2015 The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show – Southwest (Somerset/Bath)

The Solida system from Francis Flower (Northern) Ltd is designed to offer the mass housing market a highly costeffective, efficient and environmentally friendly floor solution that combines easily accessible, existing technologies in innovative ways. The first process in changing to the Solida system involves the introduction of underfloor heating technologies into ground and separating floors in combination with GYPSOL based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. For surprisingly little increase in build cost, the Solida system delivers significant improvement in desirability and asset value, increased levels of useable space, reductions in heating operating costs and improvements in energy efficiency. Currently the mass housing market in general uses solid concrete or suspended type ground floors with timber joisted separating floors. In general the heating systems used are radiator central heating systems. The Solida system seeks to change this, such that the heating systems are underfloor heating on all floors coupled with energy efficient heat sources such as condensing gas boiler systems or renewable heat technologies such as air or ground source heat pumps which may be more appropriate to higher code and carbon neutral developments. The first principal of the Solida system is therefore the introduction of energy efficient underfloor heating systems along with GYPSOL screeds. There are a number of potential positive side effects of this. When a change is made from radiators to underfloor heating the occupier gains more useable space in each room by virtue of the fact that they no longer need to avoid

placing furniture against radiators. The generally accepted figure for this is 8% to 10% more useable space. This offers a number of practical and commercial opportunities to the house builder. Paul explained, “We have seen based on evaluations by, and discussions with, major house builders that the use of underfloor heating, given the above points offers greater desirability to purchasers. In some markets this has enabled the builder to offer higher asset value to buyers. “The system offers added value due to increased useable floor space, improved desirability and ‘kerb appeal,’ reduced energy use and subsequent cost savings to occupiers/owners, improved environmental profile and future proof design for higher code values.” The use of GYPSOL based screeds over the underfloor heating systems reduces the operating costs of the heating system. Tests using efficient and correctly designed underfloor heating systems have shown that using anhydrite screeds can improve the co-efficient of performance of an underfloor heating system by up to 25%. Additionally, flow temperatures can be reduced by some 40 to 50 Celcius compared to the temperatures required for radiator systems or some 10 to 15 Celcius compared to underfloor heating systems in traditional sand cement screeds. This all adds to the desirability and helps justify a higher selling price. This also helps the builder to achieve higher code levels where required and to gain extra code credits in coded sustainable developments. movements through hourly calls, mobile responses and periodic checks, with the GuardSafe troll logging system operating on a real-time basis. “This ensures that clients have access to the specific times of calls and patrols – meaning they can rest assured the job is being done properly and that both premises and occupants are safe and free from intrusion. This is an extremely unique feature because it usually isn’t possible to check what is happening at an establishment right there and then.”

According to Roy Unwin, Managing Director of Acclaimed Security, this is one of the main benefits of the equipment: “One of the biggest problems in this area relates to the certainty of results – most people can’t be sure whether the people they hire can be trusted to do a good job,” he explained.

As well as the Manned Guarding Services, Key Holding and Alarmed Response Services are also available. This is designed explicitly for instances whereby property is left unoccupied for any period of time and out-of-hours access is likely to be required. Policies can be put into place to ensure the correct individuals have access to the premises at any time, upon the specifications decided by the company. This service is a safe, trustworthy and extremely cost-effective solution to issue that often preoccupies many businesses.

The security specialist employs a mobile fleet of both marked and unmarked vehicles operated by trained officers utilising video recording equipment to ensure properties are kept safe and secure, reducing crime and increasing awareness.

According to Roy, the fact they are an instant response company makes them further stand out from their competitors: “We have a reputation for getting to locations immediately once alarms are triggered; this speed of response makes us a superior organisation as in some cases it can take hours for organisations to arrive.” Acclaimed Security’s security measures have been utilized by a number of industrial and commercial outlets and well-regarded blue-chip companies including Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds City Council, Freight Liner, Tarmac, Seabrook Crisps, Vion Foods, Brake Brothers and Liberty Living. Their extensive customer base is testament to the industry leading standard of service offered by Acclaimed Security. Commitment to Excellence

Save Energy & Money with Easytherm Solutions UK is pleased to present its highly esteemed Commitment to Excellence profile to Easytherm Ltd. As a relatively new company, Easytherm was founded three years ago by founder and technical director Steve Lord. He decided to set up his own enterprise in a bid to step off the corporate merry-go-round (after working in the hardware and software development industry for numerous years) to follow his professional interests more closely. Easytherm is a manufacturer and retailer of ‘smart’ heating and hot water controllers, which are effectively an environmental and cost-effective alternative to more traditional methods and systems. Dubbed Easytherm®, this intelligent networked boiler programmer is a revolutionary new concept which enables customers to save significant amounts of time, energy and money. The system can be specifically configured per clients’ requests during the initial set up, and settings can be tweaked accordingly depending on individual preferences in terms of both temperatures and timings. It ensures fantastic savings can be made on both heating and hot water costs and it can easily be considered the best value programmer available on the market. “Our main role is to design, produce

and distribute home control products,” explained Easytherm’s Managing Director Paul Burke. “We have started our journey with a heating and hot water controller that can be controlled either from the base unit or remotely from any internet connected device. Our product road map takes in remote sensors for temperature, remote TRVs, alarm systems (gas, heat, fire, motion) and a central system to manage and control.

but future plans involve penetrating the new build and care and independent living markets. Easytherm’s headquarters is situated in Milton Keynes but its design and development processes take place in the UK and Vietnam and its production and manufacturing facilities are based in Romania. Whilst discussing the company’s progressive path, Paul concluded: “After our recent launch we are simply developing our strategy to increase our awareness in the market and pursue our chosen channels. Our goal is to develop our product line up and really bring a ‘home care and protection’ management system to the domestic user.

“We put the user at the heart of everything we do and we aim to put the user in control of their domestic environment – be that heating and hot water, that is caring for the home environment or protecting the home environment through adequate measures (smoke alarms, CO2 alarms and motion sensor alarms are just some of the products that we aim to bring to market). “With Easytherm, it’s all about simplicity. Our ‘Keep it Simple’ approach runs from the easy set up (one box which fits standard 6 pin BG backplate fond on almost all existing controllers) to the easy configuration. All you have to do is connect to the local internet which is simply done using a phone or a tablet, then it is fully operable from the minute you install, as all functionality can be managed from the unit itself through to very simple app download making all functions operable anytime, anyplace and anywhere from your internet connected device.”

Easytherm’s most recent product is the ETLite, the world’s first upgradable controller. It begins as a simple to use heating and hot water controller and can then be upgraded to an internet based remote controlled heating and hot water controller. Typically, installers utilise these systems the most, but links are being developed with larger institutions in order to install in greater numbers within larger development projects. Naturally, the business is predominantly placed in the heating and plumbing sector,

“We have attended many trade shows, however, as researchers rather than presenters. Our intention is to totally understand our market, what's there and more importantly what's not – we see ourselves as adding value to the already exciting market that is the internet-based control systems market. Our key aim is to make this easy to install and simple to manage whilst making it totally affordable – we want to be the system of choice.” Contact T +44 (0)1865 522583 info@easytherm.co.uk www.easytherm.co.uk

The Trade Association for all forms of Radiant Heating

Easyflow are renowned experts in providing innovative and premium quality flooring solutions (in the form of underfloor heating and liquid floor screeds). The Easyflow liquid screed is an approved contractor and installer for Calcium Sulphate Anhydrite Screed, a revolutionary product which has enhanced efficiency and productivity in today’s construction market. This form of screed is much more advantageous than its traditional prototype, particularly when it is used in accordance with underfloor heating. Muller’s Smart Carts UK “As with all good products, the original Muller’s cart was created out of a need for something better.” The humble beginnings of the Smart Cart In 1975, Brigadier General Henry Muller of Santa Barbara in California realised that his 60 year old wife was struggling to man the wheelbarrow in their stable without back pain. Understanding how much his wife loved her horses, he set to designing and creating the first easy to use, lightweight, durable, well-balanced stable cart in the market which he called The Muller’s Stablemate. It became successful in the American market, was renamed ‘The Muller’s Smart Cart’ and is now made in Goreham, Maine. Four years ago David Fortune’s wife purchased a Smart Cart having seen one belonging to a friend. He put it together for her and thought it was a fantastic product. Later, after discovering that his aged mother’s gardener was struggling to dispose of grass cuttings from her vast lawns, he decided to buy her one but discovered that they were no longer available in the UK. David ordered her Smart Cart directly from Maine and offered to be Muller’s Smart Carts’ new distributor in the UK. They appointed him and Smart Carts UK was born. What makes the Smart Cart so ‘smart’? “The carts are perfectly balanced, they are light, easily manoeuvrable and very little lifting is required. They’re also

built to last decades – 20 to 30 years is not unusual. “The weight of the load in a Smart Cart in motion is balanced over the wheels. Unlike the traditional wheelbarrow design – with a single wheel at one end of the tub and lifting required on the other end – only a little leverage – not lifting of the Smart Cart – is necessary to move the centre of gravity over the wheels, making the cart ideal for those with mobility issues and back pain. Its pair of wheels makes it completely stable and controllable with one hand. “Due to the materials used in a Smart Cart, they are known to last well over 25 years,” David continued. “Each product comes with a 5 year warranty, but the combination of the aircraft quality aluminium alloy frame, the steel cross member, axle and wheels and the exceptionally tough, high impact polyethylene of the tub makes the cart tough, light and virtually indestructible.” How can your Smart Cart transform your daily life? “Wherever you use the carts, whether in the garden, in the stable or on the farm, they are incredibly versatile. Rust resistant and leak free, whatever the season. A Smart Cart makes child’s

lasting wheelbarrow alternative. The great ‘tip forward’ design makes it simple to unload soil, grass cuttings and even paving stones. Originally designed specifically for stable work, the Smart Cart makes mucking out a pleasure it never used to be!”

Building News

Natural daylight is an invaluable asset that has long been recognised as the most effective form of light. It can benefit the health of the building’s occupants by boosting immune systems, aiding normal sleep patterns, and lifting moods. It also increases concentration and mental and visual stimulation, resulting in greater productivity. This is especially important for schools and offices. As well as health benefits, natural light will lead to a reduction in energy bills, electricity usage, CO2 emissions and, consequently, environmental impact. It furnishes buildings with performance that satisfies building regulations and assists in meeting sustainability targets and gaining BREEAM credits. Another valuable advantage is the huge improvement to interior aesthetics, to the point where retail sales are shown to increase with natural light. Artfully designed flat roof rooflights flood interiors with up to three times more daylight than equivalent windows. The light from a rooflight is also more evenly distributed throughout the room, less likely to result in glare or compromise of privacy. Whitesales rooflights are designed to transform the gloomiest of interiors and are equally suited to commercial, education, domestic, leisure and health-related buildings. Flexometal is, as the name suggests, a flexible ferrous sheet material. Plain Flexometal can be used as lining paper and then decorated over with any regular thickness wallpaper of your choice (or a plain lining paper and then painted over). The result – a wall that looks like any other but one that you can stick magnets to! Ideal for nurseries, kids’ bedrooms and playrooms. Flexometal is also available with a dry wipe face. Many clients have used dry wipe faced Flexometal to convert a whole wall into a magnetic whiteboard. Ideal for meeting rooms, creative thinking spaces and education/presenting environments. Dry

wipe faced Flexometal has been used recently to create walls like this in the Cabinet Office and for other prestigious clients such as John Lewis, Waitrose, GlaxoSmithKline, Hewlett Packard plus many more. Flexometal has been fire tested at the Building Research Establishment and classified to Euroclass fire resistance classification EN13501-1. It is the only ferrous sheet available in the UK that carries this classification giving you peace of mind that putting Flexometal sheet up on the walls of any building will not cause a fire hazard. Abel Magnets also supply a full range of magnetic sheet, magnetic tape and other magnetic products – please visit our website for more information.

retaining trees on a development site will make development unviable. However, there is an array of tools available to enable developers to achieve what was previously unthinkable. It is now possible to construct parking near to trees, and to plant trees in the middle of car parks. For one client who needed to create additional parking near his offices, and bought the derelict land from the local authority, the requirement to plant new trees on the site was proving challenging as there was little space available. Someone suggested reducing the number of parking spaces! However, with the use of subterranean infrastructure, we

The team at Cedarwood Tree Care work hard to provide a high quality service to clients seeking to manage trees. From the assessment of trees for safety through to amenity management and assessing for retention suitability on potential development sites, they apply best practice and pioneering ideas to equip clients whether you have one tree or many. Led by principle consultant Mark Chester, an accredited expert witness, advice can be provided on a range of scenarios from Home Buyer Tree Reports to guide mortgage applications, tree safety inspections, tree reports to BS 5837:2012 (often required by local authorities for planning applications involving trees) and providing amenity tree valuations. Money may not grow on trees, but we can provide a monetary value depending on the situation.

Dealing with trees within Conservation Areas and those subject to Tree Preservation Orders, whether within a development scenario or not, can present different challenges. One client with a Willow tree in a Conservation Area proposed for felling was informed that a TPO was to be served on the tree to protect it. He felt helpless in knowing how to resolve the issue, until he called for our help. We were able to identify appropriate pruning and soon obtained the necessary consent. When a new TPO is made, we can provide an appropriate response, whether objecting or ensuring accuracy. We can also help with tree work applications and appeals. Boundary disputes can become protracted and emotive. We seek to identify the key issues and propose solutions, and whatever the issue, our in-house expert is willing to attend court if needed.

Adrian Clarke, Sales Co-ordinator at Slanetrac, said this continued success is due to the company’s rapid growth and development, “We have progressed greatly over the past 10 years,” he explained. “This achievement is largely due to the expansion we have experienced through getting the Slanetrac name out there effectively. We have managed to significantly increase our customer base by offering our services across all of the areas we operate in. “In terms of recent changes, we have experienced further expansions by selling to more companies across some of the main European countries (including Australia, America, Russia, France and Holland). We are looking to break into the Scandinavian market in the near future, and our main priority centres on the continuation of what we are doing in order to secure more sales.”

All of the necessary processes right from the build and design through to the manufacture and assembly is done internally, so we have a great deal of expertise in these areas.” The company has already attended many trade shows this year, including LAMMA 2015 in January and INTERMAT Paris in April. It has the capability to stock, build, fix and recondition specialist apparatus, and orders can be taken for turnkey products. The team can also purchase machinery per customers’ requests, or take items into the workshop to be individually repaired or rebuilt. “With EG Newell you are guaranteed good machinery,” Ernie Newell, Founder of EG Newell, commented. “It is much less expensive than buying new equipment, plus you can buy machinery from us which is no longer manufactured. We stand out from our competitors in the marketplace because of our specialisation – particularly in regards to grinding machines and internal grinders – for example, nobody else specialises on Heald Internal Grinders such as model 273A’s.” Its long-running prominence in the industry is due to continued hard work and commitment, as the business has overcome many economical obstacles. “Our persistence has enabled us to succeed in the industry over such a long

at what we do; people still wanted to use the services we provide because of our consistent professionalism and advanced expertise. At the moment we are doing exceedingly well, the last twelve months in particular has been fantastic for us and we have started off this year even stronger than before. Since the financial year started in April we have continued to perform in an exceptional manner – if we keep moving forwards at this pace then we are on form to treble the income of our business.”

StockSafe, a new way to prevent breakages Hundreds of Millions of pounds are being lost in the Logistics and Distribution industry through damaged stock. With StockSafe you reduce the cost of breakage and spillage and the peripheral costs of slip and trip accidents, and recoup. The beauty of StockSafe is that it doesn’t slow down the order fulfillment process. It sits permanently within the racking. HSE reported that in 2013/2014 that 90% of slip trip and accidents happen when the floor is contaminated. Also, that there were more fatal and major incidents in this period. My own research indicates that nobody takes less than 7 days off following an accident. So can you afford not to invest in StockSafe? Gunnar is our designer, trained in engineering, with over ten years’ experience in Logistics and Distribution.

EG Newell has a large client base, with customers spanning various industries. Its machinery and specialist services are utilised by both small and medium sized companies throughout the country and beyond, serving organisations in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall (amongst many other locations). It is indisputably the machining company of choice simply because of its renowned speciality for grinding machines and lathes; you will be unlikely to find any other business with such a refined knowledge in this particular niche. Customers from the past keep coming back.

Seton shares best practice to achieve award-winning customer service In June 2015, Seton won the highly acclaimed European Catalogue & Mail Order Direct Commerce (ECMOD) Outstanding Customer Service Award. The company wanted to share their ideas around best practice in customer service to shed some light on why they were a cut above the rest against tough competition.

He had been observing damage to stock and people in various warehouse settings. Determined to solve the problem he began to turn ideas into drawings, final design and prototype and patent.

The machinery experts have worked comprehensively hard to maintain their position at the forefront of the industry and plan to upkeep this privileged status by sustaining their current level of customer service and dedication. When discussing its position in the market, Ernie summarised: “We have obtained much interest from exhibitions in the past; attendance has provided us with the opportunity to showcase our products and services and obtain new clients. One particularly memorable customer connected with us at a trade show and they have continued to use our services for over 10 years! We gain great coverage and custom through advertising and recommendations; so the plan is to carry on as usual going forwards, continuing to provide an incredibly good service for all of our customers.”

Chris Humphrey, Director of Sales and Customer Service, believes that getting close to the customer is the key to Seton’s success, “We put the customer at the centre and build everything we do around what they want and need. We listen to them through regular surveys, Feefo, and ‘Packed with Pride’ feedback slips in customer orders to understand how we can deliver a customer experience better than any of our competitors, and actually take action to make that happen”. Through Feefo, overall positive feedback scores for 2014 were: 95.1% for service and 96.4% for products. These high scores contributed to Seton being awarded ‘Gold Trusted Merchant’ accreditation from Feefo for the last two years running. Seton was also recently selected to join the Google Certified Shop program, only available to e-commerce sites that demonstrate a track record of on-time shipping and excellent customer service.

customers also rely on them for expertise. Legislation Watch is a free resource that provides regular, up-to-date, easy to digest information on workplace legislation, and health and safety issues. Feedback from readers confirms that this is considered an invaluable reference that enhances the reputation of Seton as an expert in health and safety. In addition to listening to the customer and providing added-value resources, Seton provides new employees with a rigorous training plan to achieve excellence; and sets challenging targets in areas such as first call resolution, call quality measures, speed of despatch and delivery, and service levels in order to provide an award-winning customer experience at every step.
