SPRINGTIME IN THE EVERGLADES By Mart铆n Ar贸stegui Springtime in South Florida usually coincides with the height of the dry season. At this time of the year, the water levels in the Everglades marsh are very low and as a result, all the fish must move to deeper water areas such as canals and water holes adjacent to the marsh. These conditions result in some of the best fishing for fresh water species in South Florida. The concentrations of fish bring large quantities of wading birds and alligators.

Over the past few weeks I was able to take my wife Roberta and some very good friends to the Everglades in order to experience this great fishing and bird watching opportunity. We all caught large quantities of largemouth bass, pickerel, blue gills, gar fish and bowfins. Very soon the rainy season will return and the fish will go back into the marsh, where they will begin a new circle of life in the Everglades.

Historic Bimini Big Game Club to Provide Backdrop for Hooters Calendar Shoot By John Bell

The popular Hooters International Calendar, which sells nearly 500,000 copies annually, will feature the historic Big Game Club Resort and Marina and the beauty of Bimini as part of its 2015 edition. A contingent of Hooters Calendar hopefuls will be coming to the popular Bahamas out-island for a four-day photo shoot and stay at the 51-room resort in Alice Town, which has a long history of hosting international fishing tournaments as well being a playground for many celebrities from Hollywood’s Golden Age and a retreat for Dr. Martin Luther King. South Florida Hooters franchisee Dale “Champ” Regnier, a sportsfisherman and frequent visitor, worked with resort manager Michael Weber to coordinate details for the shoot, which is scheduled from June 2-5. The Hooters brand, which is 31 years old, has been producing the popular selling calendar for the last 28 years. According to Doug Vollmer,

head photographer and calendar project director, 5,000 apply to model for the annual calendar of which 300 are shortlisted for photography sessions in locales such as Bimini, the British Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands, Exumas, Abacos and Mexico. From those shoots, a final group of 200 are selected for the calendar. How many might make the calendar from the Bimini shoot? “The hope is that by taking them to such a beautiful location as Bimini and the Big Game Club for a multiple day shoot should increase their chances, said Kristi Quarles, Director of Marketing and Public Affairs for Hooters. Quarles said the models selected for Bimini are from Florida Hooters restaurant locations.

HIKING SNOW CANYON A PHOTO ESSAY

Por el Dr. Martin Arostegui Millions of years ago the wind transported huge quantities of quartzite sand grains that covered most of what we call today the State of Utah. These grains became compacted and petrified to form Navaho Sandstone. Water flow eroded the sandstone to form canyons. Volcanic eruptions produced lava flows that migrated down the canyon and are very evident today. On a recent trip with my wife Roberta and my daughter Danielle we hiked this beautiful desert canyon.

HOOVER DAM AN ENGINEERING MARVEL By Dr. Mart铆n Ar贸stegui The Hoover Dam was built on the Black Canyon of the Colorado River during the Great Depression and completed in 1936. At the time, it was the largest concrete construction project and it employed many new and untested engineering methods. The dam was built to control floods, provide water to multiple States as well as Mexico and produce hydroelectric power. The dam gave rise to Lake Mead, which is one of the largest water reservoirs in the United States. Today, the Hoover Dam is a very important tourist attraction for the states of Arizona and Nevada. The dam has brought many positive economic effects but also has had a negative environmental impact on the Colorado River Delta as well as a negative impact on many fish and plants downstream form the dam. Today four species of fish native to the Colorado River have been placed on the endangered species list as a direct result of the Hoover Dam.

Interview with Dr. Martin Ar贸stegui, Director of Travel and Exploration of Sol y Mar Magazine, who holds the world record for largest sport fishing catches around the world, recognized by the IGFA (International Game Fish Association). Martin Ar贸stegui is the great-grandson of the famous and illustrious Cuban scientist Carlos J. Finlay. This interview was conducted by Wayne Filowitz of WRPBiTV.

Inaugural BTT George Hommell Jr. Florida Keys Habitat Fundraiser Nets $205k Johnny Morris pledges $100k lead gift on behalf of Bass Pro Shops

A picturesque spring sunset over the flats was the backdrop for the inaugural Bonefish and Tarpon Trust George Hommell Jr. Florida Keys Habitat Fundraiser, held at World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada, FL. Conservation-minded anglers, guides and friends gathered on the beach to celebrate the life and memory of one of the pioneers of flats fishing and conservation efforts in the Florida Keys. George Hommell Jr. was an angling legend. He is credited with refining the techniques for poling for bonefish, was one of the first people to trailer his boat around to find fish, and also developed a number of important shrimp fly patterns, including the Hommell Evil Eye. In 1964 George helped baseball legend Ted Williams initiate the Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament and shortly after, in 1967, Hommell founded World Wide Sportsman alongside clients Carl Navarre and Billy Pate. Hommell was also a devout conservationist. He promoted tarpon and bonefish protection and Everglades Restoration through

World Wide Sportsman, promoted awareness about the importance of seagrass preservation, and under his leadership, Bayside Marina became the first certified “green” marina in the Keys. In a wonderful tribute to Hommell’s legacy, attendees committed $205,000 to the BTT George Hommell Jr. Florida Keys Habitat Fund. A $100,000 lead gift was announced by Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris - a dear friend of Hommell - making it the single largest corporate gift in BTT’s history.

SANDMAN DOMINATES THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH SHOOTOUT AT CAP CANA By Rick Alvarez Fotos: Jeam Karlo Santana, Jeam Karlo Santana, Bill Boyce y Martin Arostegui

It wasn’t long before the radio started crackling with reports of releases after the signal for lines-in on day one, Friday June 6th, and it continued that way throughout the four days of competition at this year’s International Cap Cana Billfish Shootout. At lines-out on that first day the fleet of 19 tournament boats had released a total of 2 blue marlin, 33 whites and four sails with Puerto Rico’s Peje in the lead one fish ahead of Sandman, Shark Byte, Singularis and Let It Be in the overall standings. Day two dawned sunny with a light breeze out of the northeast and it turned out to be Sandman’s day with them taking the lead by releasing three blue marlin and three whites by the end of the day giving them a comfortable cushion of 1,020 points over second place Shark Byte while Peje held on to third one fish behind second. A total of 32 white marlin and 7 blues were released on day two. That evening Chivas Regal 12 year old Scotch hosted their annual White Party at the very elegant Dux Chivas Club.

The third day of fishing dawned much the same as the previous one with Sandman maintaining their lead of over a thousand points. However, it was the team aboard Singularis which had an outstanding day releasing 6 whites allowing them to leap frog over several boats and moving into second place while Peje continued to hold on to third place. Let It Be also had a fabulous day releasing 3 whites, a blue and a sail putting them in contention in the overall standings. The day’s totals came to 5 blue marlin, 39 whites and 2 sails. Evening festivities were held at Juanillo Beach where Bermudez Rum went all out hosting the traditional Caribbean Rum Bash which included a performance by the Ministry of Tourism’s Folklore Dance Group, roast pork stuffed with rice and black beans and all the Bermudez Rum Mojitos you could drink while guests danced into the wee hours. Truly the most fun filled party of the year!

Next day came the well deserved Lay Day when anglers, crews and observers got a chance to shop, sightsee or enjoy the beach. On the night of the Lay Day the now famous Fourth Annual Cap Cana Shootout Cook Off was held. Three recipes were submitted to the panel of judges and Peje, three time defending champions, were dethroned by the team aboard Georgie Girl with their delicious Chicken Parmesan gourmet recipe. Attendees were all able to try the different creations accompanied by fine wines courtesy of Alvarez & Sanchez Distributors. The fourth and final day of fishing was filled with excitement and awesome fishing. Aruba’s team Alina started the action by releasing their first blue of the day at 9:32AM and hooked their last blue just before lines out ending the day with four blues and a white which propelled them from the middle of the pack to second place overall. Meanwhile Sandman kept their lead by releasing four whites while Singularis held on to third with three whites of their own. When it was all said and done a total of 166 billfish had been released in the tournament consisting of 25 blue marlin, 135

whites and 6 sailfish. An average of 8.73 fish per boat. Top overall boat was Florida’s Sandman earning them the Release Marine Step Box Trophy and they also took First Place Team in the Chivas Regal Division. Angler James Turner got the most blues trophy and Third Place High Point Angler in the the Chivas Division while Sandra McMillan was Top Lady Angler and received the Mustad Silver Hook Trophy in the same division as Top Angler. All in all they took home a very hefty amount of loot in cash and prizes. Other winners in the Chivas Regal Division were Team Alina who came out of nowhere on the last day to take Second Place while Singularis finished Third in the division and team member Jeff Stolarz got Second Place High Point Indivicual Angler.

Top overall Angler was Peje’s Carlos Garcia who received the Mustad Silver Hook Trophy in the Bermudez Rum Division and they were the First Place Team in that division as well. Also in the Bermudez Rum Division were Second Place Team Bandolera with team member Luis Fernandez Junior taking Third Place High Point Angler, while team Let It Be came in Third and team member Alex Baez won Second Place High Point Angler. All three top teams in the Bermudez Rum Division hail from Puerto Rico.

Very special thanks go to all of our sponsors and specifically to our two main sponsors the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) and Al Sol Luxury Village. Former President George H.W. Bush Honored For His Commitment To Conservation KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine – Conservation leaders from around the country gathered in Kennebunkport, Maine to honor former president George H. W. Bush for his commitment to conservation. Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris led the delegation and presented Bush with the Bass Pro Shops Lifetime Conservation Achievement Award. “President Bush is a remarkable man who has had an immeasurably profound and positive impact on our nation’s fish and wildlife resources,” Morris said. “He is a longtime and passionate fisherman and sportsman and that well-known love of fishing has made him one of the best ambassadors the sport of fishing has ever had. Most people don’t realize all that President Bush has done for conservation. During his presidency, he established 56 new wildlife refuges, more than even President Theodore Roosevelt who established 50 refuges. All of us at Bass Pro Shops are proud to pay tribute to him for everything he has done to uphold our hunting and fishing traditions as well as for his work on behalf of restoring and enhancing wildlife and fisheries habitat.” During the celebration, Bonefish and Tarpon Trust president Matt Connolly presented a framed Monroe County Resolution and letter of support from Florida Governor Rick Scott to rename Islamorada’s “Little Basin” Flat to “Two George Flat.” BTT advocated renaming of the flat in honor of President Bush and his long time friend, fishing buddy, and legendary Florida Keys fishing guide, the late George Hommell, Jr. Hommell, who was a founding member of Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, was remembered last April with a sunset celebration

at World Wide Sportsman where $205k was raised for the BTT George Hommell Florida Keys Habitat Fund. The two men shared a love of flats fishing and they were both deeply passionate about the conservation of the Florida Keys fisheries. In addition to receiving honors from Bass Pro Shops and BTT, former President Bush was also recognized by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the American Sportfishing Association and Ducks Unlimited. BTT is a fisheries conservation organization dedicated to enhancing global bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through stewardship, research, education and advocacy. CRUZIN P2P BOAT RENTAL IS CATALYST TO BOAT OWNERSHIP

Tacked to Andy Helfan’s wall was a goal: Buy a boat. He grew up around boats, and owned one for a while. But, after investing in a home for his growing family, he found himself boatless for 7 years. “It was a priority for me to be back on the water,” Helfan explained, “but I could not find a way to make it happen.” Now the proud owner of a new 28’ Bluewater center console, Helfan credits Cruzin, the peer-to-peer boat rental community, as the key. “Cruzin provided me an opportunity to get back on the water and was the catalyst for getting me back into boat ownership,” he said. www.cruzin.com
