We invite you to read about extraordinary women in our community and their accomplishments! Women to Watch spotlights the work, dedication, talents and community service of women in the Upper Chesapeake who continue to lead in their respective fields and those who embody strength, vitality, leadership and integrity for our community. We invited readers to nominate women who exemplify excellence, both in navigating their career path and as community leaders.
Our portal that accepted nominations was open on cecildaily. com from Jan. 1-31. During this month-long period, we received 134 nominations for extraordinary women who work or reside in Cecil, Harford and New Castle counties.
An APG Media of Chesapeake internal committee and an external committee made up of community members met after nominations closed. They embarked on the extraordinarily difficult task of identifying women to interview for the 2024 Women to Watch Magazine. The committee worked through a set of criteria for the nominees. The criteria includes nominees’ community service, professional accomplishments and personal achievement, as well as their work with mentoring and inspiring others.
As you can imagine, it was an exceedingly difficult decision. Each nominee had invaluable contributions indelible both in the community and workplace. The names within these pages represent women who are breaking stereotypes to positively impact our world today while inspiring future generations. Our many thanks to the strong women at Cecil Whig who made this publication possible.

WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH CECIL COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PARTICULARLY AS A COUNSELOR AND AS AN AUTHOR?
Working for Cecil County Public Schools for the last 11 years has been an amazing experience. It’s heartwarming to see so many of my past students or their parents contact me years later to share the impact I’ve made on their child and family. I take pride in being able to foster positive relationships and partnerships that continue to enhance student learning and wellbeing. As a school counselor at Holly Hall, I have had the opportunity to make positive impacts on the students, build meaningful relationships with students, families, and staff, and contribute to the growth and success of students. I am able to make a meaningful difference in the lives of all of my students. As an author, I can also spread my message of positivity and kindness throughout the community.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
As an African American woman, I have faced unique challenges. The lack of representation creates a limitation in visibility, which has led to some families forming racial biases about me before even meeting me. I work in a workplace that is predominantly female, but I recognize the various difficulties women often face in the workplace. I’ve been fortunate to work under the guidance of strong female leaders.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS IN EDUCATION?
Teaching can be a challenging and demanding profession, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Seek feedback from colleagues, supervisors, and students, and use it to identify areas for growth and improvement. Building a strong network of mentors, colleagues, and other educators can be invaluable for career growth and development. This was a significant factor in my own journey from teaching special education to elementary education, and now in my role as a school counselor. Be sure to cultivate positive relationships with all stakeholders. Effective communication, collaboration, and teamwork are essential components of a successful teaching career.
Additionally, I would recommend continuously pursuing learning opportunities in your field. Participate in events and conferences, and actively seek out chances to engage with other educators. Finally, remember to prioritize self-care and well-being to maintain your passion and enthusiasm for teaching. Embrace the challenges and opportunities that come your way. Becoming an educator is a rewarding and fulfilling journey that requires passion and commitment.
IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN BUT HAVE NOT?
I would love to work with more non-profits in the community to help identify and find solutions to some of the barriers that students face daily. As a school counselor, I recognize the need for additional resources for our students to be successful. As I continue to grow as an author, I would like to expand my involvement to include larger conferences and keynote speaking opportunities focused on social-emotional learning and mental health.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SELECTED AS A WOMAN TO WATCH?
It is a bit overwhelming.
WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK AS THE FOUNDER OF ARDENT TITLE COMPANY AS WELL AS YOUR WORK WITH THE CECIL COUNTY FAIR, 4-H, AND IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
My foundation comes from being raised as a small-town farm girl. Many people in my past told me that it would not be possible to succeed, to achieve the goals that I was setting for myself. I am happy knowing that I was able to overcome the obstacles that were laid out before me and build a life that I am proud of. My involvement with the agricultural community through the County Fair, Cecil County Farm Museum, Cecil County 4-H has kept me grounded and reminds me every day that I come from a long line of strength.
I am a firm believer that you have to open the doors for youth, give them the opportunities to step out of their comfort zone and encourage their growth. If I am able to make an impact, with one person, give them the ability to achieve goals then I know I made a difference.
I often get asked: why do you volunteer so much?
The answer is simple. I do it for the kids.

WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS IN REAL ESTATE?
My advice to young women entering the world of real estate would be to listen to your peers and mentors, stay focused and grounded. Surround yourself with a support system of experienced and knowledgeable people in the industry- Build a team and find the balance of understanding the challenges and commitment within the industry.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
One of the challenges that I have faced is not being taken seriously, assume that I do not know how to resolve or handle certain situations. Some people often challenge me and ask to speak to my supervisor or a person in their mind someone with more experience.
WHAT IS MOST FULFILLING ABOUT YOUR WORK? WHAT MOST MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
Many of the most fulfilling moments in my career are handling transactions for some of the youth that were involved in the 4-H program, first-time homebuyers – being part of a major chapter in a person’s life – homeownership. I also enjoy the challenge of solving title concerns and tracing back the history of our community.
While reviewing the title to a property, you get a snapshot of what our community was like many years ago, perhaps a simpler time, yet a time when the struggles were just as real as the ones we face today.

WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK AS A MANAGER AND IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY?
My work in the cannabis industry offers a unique blend of challenge and reward. Maryland’s cannabis market is dynamic, with evolving regulations, product innovation, and a constant focus on enhancing the customer experience. This fast-paced environment allows me to leverage my problem-solving skills to address the diverse challenges that arise daily. Operating within a heavily regulated industry presents its own set of hurdles, primarily due to limited access to resources. However, I’m optimistic that potential federal rescheduling could unlock significant growth opportunities for the industry as a whole.
10 WOMEN TO WATCH 2024 | UPPER CHESAPEAKE
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
Throughout my career, I’ve encountered situations where my qualifications or abilities were not initially recognized. This could stem from unconscious bias or a lack of familiarity with the specific challenges women face in balancing work and personal lives. It’s important to build self-confidence and advocate for yourself, while also focusing on building strong relationships with supportive colleagues and mentors.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMEN LOOKING TO PURSUE CAREERS IN MANAGEMENT?
Network strategically and cultivate relationships with successful women in leadership roles aligned with your career goals. Learn from their experiences: how they developed their skills, navigated career growth, and manage their work-life balance. The mentorship and guidance of experienced leaders can be invaluable. Surround yourself with a positive and ambitious professional network. Engaging with highly motivated individuals who prioritize personal and professional development will create a stimulating environment that fosters your own growth and keeps you inspired.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR CAREER IN AN EMERGING INDUSTRY WITH YOUR HOME AND FAMILY LIFE? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY OF YOUR CAREER?
Let’s be honest, this past year has been a whirlwind! Maryland’s cannabis market has exploded, and while it’s been incredibly rewarding, it’s definitely meant some long hours. Luckily, I have an amazing husband who can balance his remote work while holding down our household and supports me day in and day out, wonderful family and friends who offer endless moral support, and a fantastic network of supportive colleagues who keep things fun (and manageable!) at work. I’m still a work in progress on the balance front, but I’m learning to communicate my needs better and prioritize what matters most. At the end of the day, it’s a juggling act, but seeing the positive impact on our customers and this exciting new industry makes it all worthwhile.
Honestly, there are so many! But one that stands out recently is seeing the line literally wrapped around the building on July 1st, 2023. The first day of adult-use sales in Maryland, and the sheer joy on people’s faces as they walked in the door – that was incredible. Being part of ending cannabis prohibition at the ground floor of this industry is definitely a career highlight.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SELECTED AS A WOMAN TO WATCH?
I’m truly humbled and incredibly grateful to be included among such amazing women who were nominated for this prestigious recognition. Honestly, it came as a complete surprise to me. I was thrilled, but more importantly, it made me feel like my efforts to help those who need it most are making a real difference.
WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH DEEP ROOTS AND YOUR MANY INVOLVEMENTS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
My work with Deep Roots and the Hacks Point Fire Company is a true source of fulfillment, as it allows me to inject positivity into the lives of those around me who need help. At Deep Roots, witnessing individuals overcome the challenge of homelessness and chase after their dreams fills me with immense happiness. The aspect that resonates with me the most, however, is the opportunity to provide young children with a sense of normalcy and joy as their parents work hard to rebuild their lives. As an EMS Lieutenant/EMT, nothing compares to the satisfaction of seeing people we’ve assisted during their most challenging moments flourish within our community.
On a personal level, my efforts in organizing blood drives, fundraising for the Ronald McDonald House of DE, and supporting Nemours Children’s Hospital have been exceptionally rewarding. These activities have provided me with a profound sense of contribution and enrichment, especially reflecting on my own journey. When I gave birth to triplets and spent 105 days in the hospital to care for my surviving son, Maverick, these organizations were my pillars of support. My involvement in these causes is my way of giving back, keeping the memory and spirit of my journey alive, and continually fueling my dedication to making a difference.
14 WOMEN TO WATCH 2024 | UPPER CHESAPEAKE
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED IN YOUR CAREER?
I’ve encountered some complicated challenges in balancing my professional responsibilities with my personal life—a common intersection in my field that requires constant attention and adaptation as the two can often collide. Additionally, managing compassion fatigue has been a significant challenge and personal journey for me. Immersing myself in the lives of others, bearing witness to their trauma, burdens, and challenges, has sometime been profoundly draining on me. This emotional investment, especially as a woman, has led me to a deeper emotional involvement. Learning to navigate these challenges, and not carry but manage the emotional weight of others while maintaining my wellbeing, has been both a personal and professional triumph.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ONE PURSUING CAREERS IN COMMUNITY SERVICE AND IN WORKING WITH HOMELESS FAMILIES?
I share this from the depths of my heart: this path must be a calling that resonates with each young women’s very essence. This journey will confront them with stories that may shake their faith in humanity and present them with moments where, despite their best efforts, the outcomes for the children and families they try to help might not align with their hopes.
In these moments of challenge, I will offer a piece of advice that has been a guiding light for me: “Don’t expect your own level of dedication and commitment from everyone else.” It’s crucial to approach each individual with understanding and acceptance, meeting them exactly where they are in their journey. This work is not just about providing service; it’s about connecting with empathy, nurturing hope, and being a beacon of light in the darkest of times. Embrace this path with all your heart, for it is one of profound impact and immeasurable reward.
WHAT IS MOST FULFILLING ABOUT YOUR WORK?
The heart of my fulfillment lies in the triumphs, the remarkable stories of resilience and rebirth I witness. Watching individuals overcome the shadows of homelessness, shatter generational curses, reunite with their children, secure a place to call home, and stand tall on their feet again—these moments are the essence of why I am so deeply committed to Deep Roots. It’s helping and seeing people not just chase but catch their dreams that is what fuels my passion.
In the realm of Emergency EMS, the most rewarding moments are those when I can help someone make it back to their family’s embrace. Each life saved, each family preserved, reaffirms my dedication to what I do. It’s these victories, both big and small, that motivate me every day and remind me that in the midst of any challenges, there is hope and the potential for renewal and joy.

GIULIA HODGE
Executive Director
CASA Cecil County
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SELECTED AS A WOMAN TO WATCH?
It’s incredibly flattering. I never thought I would feel comfortable being selected as a “woman to watch,” but it’s made me look back on my story and be proud of my achievements.
WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH CASA AND THE YOUTH OF CECIL COUNTY?
My favorite part about working with children impacted by foster care is watching how much they grow and develop when they’re allowed to make decisions for themselves and have a voice in their future. In terms of the foster care system, I think we often make difficult decisions for children without considering what they might truly want. Do they want to stay in their original school? Do they want to come to court and talk to the judge? Even something as simple as what they would like for lunch after a hard appointment can be important. It’s often the littlest things that can impact how children grow into adults, and empowerment can be so very important in that process.
Ultimately, family reunification is the ideal outcome in a foster care case. Seeing a child reunified with a stable, healthy family unit is immensely gratifying. Enhancing the rate of successful reunifications not only benefits the child and their family but also alleviates strain on the demand for foster homes.
I also enjoy working with youth transitioning out of foster care into independent living. I think they are an unappreciated and underserved demographic, and helping them grow into independent, successful adults is incredibly rewarding.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN IN AN EXECUTIVE ROLE?
Life throws curveballs, so - as a young child - I learned to maintain a resilient mindset in the face of adversity. This served as a stepping stone to my success, and learning to be resilient assisted me with overcoming the challenges that I later faced as a female leader.
Conquering perfectionism is another challenge I faced as I grew my career. I would stop in my tracks for fear of making the wrong decision and spend precious time agonizing over the right way forward. As I matured, I learned to leverage my intuition and trust my gut. I no longer freeze in fear – instead, I decide and innovate. This methodology has served me well!
Lastly, balancing work, family, and personal life is another challenge for women leaders like me. Finding the right balance necessitates negotiation – with yourself as well as with those close to you - and regular re-evaluation of priorities. I won’t say that I always get it right, but I’ve learned to make more informed decisions over time.
16 WOMEN TO WATCH 2024 | UPPER CHESAPEAKE
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS WORKING WITH FOSTER CHILDREN?
You’ll be working in a system that needs a lot of work. While we all want to think (and hope!) that we’re doing all we can for children in the foster care system, that’s not always the case. Often, these children deserve more than what we are providing to them. It may be easy and comfortable to remain ignorant of the situation, but that’s not how we make a difference. Foster care in the United States is in a crisis. And we need you to join us in this fight.
Become versed in trauma-informed care. Every child in foster care has experienced trauma, often due to abuse or neglect. Just the act of being removed from your home (even if it is unsafe) causes trauma, let alone the events that caused the removal. Trauma-informed care understands that the way forward for many of these children requires acknowledging all of the factors of their experience and creating an environment in which they can heal and recover.
Know that it can take just ONE positive connection to increase resiliency in these children. And in my experience, I can confidently say that it is worth it.
Yes, there are difficult times and trauma to work through, but foster care is often the safety net that allows families to heal and move forward during adversity. I would encourage you to invest your time and energy in this field because you could make an immense difference.
Lastly, self-care is an essential social work survival skill. Find something you love to do to reduce levels of stress and anxiety. I attend Jazzercise classes regularly.
WHAT IS MOST FULFILLING ABOUT YOUR WORK? WHAT MOST MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
Sometimes, the most fulfilling things in my day are the little victories. A child reuniting with their family, a volunteer signing up to be a mentor or advocate, a former foster child coming by to let us know what they’re up to. Knowing we’ve made a difference – and continue to make a difference –for these kids is a huge part of why I keep coming back day after day. We’re needed. As I mentioned before, the foster care system in the United States is in crisis, and organizations like ours are charged with working to help change the outcome for children who might have no other support system.
I’m proud of the work we do and the commitment we’ve made to being the voice for those who are voiceless. That’s what motivates me every day.

WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH CECIL COUNTY TOURISM?
Cecil County’s tourism industry has varied types and sizes of businesses including many local, small businesses and organizations. One thing they all have in common is that they’re run by remarkable, creative people, in a County that I love. It’s a pleasure to go to work each day and promote beautiful scenery, fun things to see and do, fabulous places to dine, and adventures waiting to be discovered in our destination. Over a million people visit each year. Visitors spend a great deal of money in Cecil County supporting our local economy and providing jobs. Doing marketing and special promotions to encourage visitation to these businesses and organizations provides a wonderful chance to make a difference.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
I’d like to answer this one generally. When it comes to confronting a challenge, I always believed in embracing each one as an opportunity. Whether related to a work task, or a workforce relationship, conquering challenges can be a key to future successes. A woman’s “toolbox for challenges” should include creativity, positivity, endurance, teamwork, and strength. The best way to demonstrate career knowledge and ability is through hard work, dedication, commitment, and accomplishment, especially when faced with challenges.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO, OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS WORKING IN LOCAL TOURISM?
Many people in varied types of careers got their start with a job in the hospitality industry where they learn valuable skills for a lifetime. Tourism needs a workforce with a desire to provide outstanding customer service, whether it’s an entry level position, one in management, or someone with an entrepreneurial idea for a new tourism business.
If you have a passion for people, consider the hospitality industry. Travelers seek authentic experiences and stories in the places they visit. Each and every staff member they meet along the way, whether at a restaurant, hotel, specialty shop, State Park, etc., can have a significant impact. Things as simple as a genuine smile…wishing visitors a great day…or asking how their day is going can leave a positive and lasting impression. ALL employees of our industry are important, and helping travelers create memories of a lifetime can be enjoyable and rewarding.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST FULFILLING EVENT YOU HAVE ORGANIZED?
Event planning has been part of my work experience for a number of years including memorable events such as March of Dimes Walk America, British Invasions Revolutionary Re-enactment, Maryland Tourism & Travel Summit, Travels with George, Bassmaster Elite & Summerfest, and more. Each event offered a unique planning experience but perhaps the most fulfilling was helping create “Winter Lights – Cecil Nights”.
In the fall of 2020, we started worrying as our first Covid winter was approaching. January and February are tough months for tourism industry businesses in a good year. Add Covid to the mix, and we were really concerned. Our funding was frozen due to the pandemic, so the major challenge was how to create a game-changing campaign without a budget. I knew there had to be a way. That’s when the power of partnership kicked in. Upper Shore Regional Council provided grant money to support the activities, and MD Office of Tourism provided a grant to market the campaign. Towns and chambers joined in the effort and by January our participating towns sparkled with winter decorations and lights. We had lists of mouth-watering, chilly weather dishes at eateries across the county. Numerous winter activities were rolled out.
As hoped, locals and visitors alike bundled up, got out of their houses and visited our towns to have fun and spend money. Even though Covid has diminished, “Winter Lights – Cecil Nights” has returned by popular demand since, and our partnership just wrapped up its 4th successful year. Special thanks to all the partners!

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SELECTED AS A WOMAN TO WATCH?
I feel very proud to be recognized among a group of rising female leaders.
WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK AT FAIR HILL NATURE CENTER?
I have learned so much since taking this position 2 years ago. My background is in finance and business development, but now I can add reptile care, grant writing, social media marketing, stewardship of an historic property and engaging kids in the great outdoors. The latter has brought me the most joy.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN IN AN EXECUTIVE ROLE?
Women do face unique challenges in leadership, but my greatest challenges so far have been those many organizations face. We’ve grown rapidly over 2 years and even though it’s been for the better, change management has been an ongoing priority. Our campus has expanded, the building and furniture have changed, and we even have many new faces amongst our staff.
Throughout, we have maintained our focus on our mission of inspiring stewardship and community through outdoor environmental education. I am so grateful to all the wonderful people who work at the Nature Center with me and have chosen to make our organization all that it is today and all that it will be in the future.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD
GIVE
TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS WORKING IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION OR AS EXECUTIVES?
To our younger generation my best advice is to find the joy in what you’re doing. It may not be your ideal job, but there is something to learn from every situation. This second piece of advice is for everyone: if you get the opportunity to specialize in something, take it.
It may be at a job or it could be a hobby. You might be surprised when that specialty makes you valuable, both as a member of your community or in the business world.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST FULFILLING PROJECT OR INITIATIVE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN? WHAT MOST MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
Managing the Nature Center has been a privilege and the project of a lifetime. Fair Hill Nature Center is a Cecil County institution that for 34 years has been bringing the magic of nature to new generations. I remember my first experience hiking these hills, finding mica and using dip nets to catch macroinvertebrates in the stream. We are making foundational memories here and helping kids understand the importance of the world around them.
We’re also helping the COVID generation learn that there is a wonderful world outside beyond their screens. In a time where educational funding is uncertain, I am honored to preserve this organization for future generations.

Community Connecting Us
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SELECTED AS A WOMAN TO WATCH?
When I first received the email, I thought it wasn’t real. Community Connecting Us (CCU) is very centralized to Port Deposit, which is a small town of just over 600 people, and I was surprised that Community Connecting Us, let alone me, would make the radar of the Upper Chesapeake Women to Watch. I’m really grateful that someone would be so kind to encourage me in such a demonstrative way. Whomever you are, thank you for believing our work has merit in the moment and is worthy of watching as we move into the future as well.
WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH COMMUNITY CONNECTING US AND THE PORT DEPOSIT COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE?
Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is the model in which we operate CCU. This is the idea of focusing on the positives, the talents, interests and resources that already exist in our Port Deposit community and not its deficits. CCU provides a space for neighbors to share these “positives” with one another and the community. Seeing people share what they love and finding neighbors that enjoy it along with them is extremely rewarding. It’s validating for that individual who’s being vulnerable enough to share, I would even say it’s healing at times. To bear witness to those moments and to personally be a recipient of my neighbors’ talents and gifts teaches me so much and unites our community. Like who would have thought that a neighbor’s love of pirates would be the catalyst for the Port Deposit Pirate Takeover, now entering its third year. This annual event brings 3k visitors to our town, boosting our camaraderie and the economy. You never know when your story will become our story..
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
As a woman who tries to be gentle and kind in her leadership approach and embraces counterintuitive ideas, like a pay-what-you-want model and radical hospitality, I think I’m often underestimated in what I’m capable of doing. Honestly, they may be right, but what they don’t see is the amazing support system that backs me; my family, my friends, and this tiny river town that knows the importance of being a good neighbor. I’m not just a woman, I’m part of a collective that gets stuff done.
28 WOMEN TO WATCH 2024 | UPPER CHESAPEAKE
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO ONE PURSUING CAREERS IN NON-PROFITS OR WITHIN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES?
Something I would tell young women no matter what industry they pursue is that there is little we actually control in our lives. However, one of the things we can be intentional about are the friendships we form and the partners we pick. These are the people that will determine how we see ourselves and how big we will allow ourselves to dream. They will be our anchor when life doesn’t go according to plan and our touchstone when we forget who we are. I have an amazing supportive husband who believes I can do anything, eight children, two of whom are married, that are all wise and challenge my perspectives. Additionally, I’m surrounded by friends who are both mentors and cheerleaders. Don’t settle.
WHAT IS MOST FULFILLING ABOUT YOUR WORK? WHAT MOST MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
The most fulfilling part of my work is getting to know my neighbors and becoming part of one another’s stories. To be invited into someone’s life is a gift and I hope I always remember to treat it as such.
Imagining what’s next if we keep pursuing and growing this ABCD movement motivates me! Being based out of such historic buildings (est. 1839, 1872, 1900) is a constant reminder that in this present moment we are a blip in history, yet our work and our stories still matter. We are working off the foundation of those that came before us over 100 years ago and setting a vision for those that are coming after us.

A. B. O’Donnell Funeral Services
Story by Erik Halberg Photos by Jenn Quinn Creative
The passing of a loved one is a sad, stressful event in anyone’s life, often associated with quiet funeral homes, expensive coffins, and men in suits. However, Alexandra O’Donnell is blazing a path for women to make the process of laying a loved one to rest just a little bit easier with a bit of compassion and a touch of care as the funeral director and founder of Elkton’s A. B. O’Donnell Cremation and Funeral Services, P.A.
A Cecil County native and Rising Sun High School graduate, the now-30 years old O’Donnell grew up in a home that served as the unofficial hospice for her extended family. Growing up, she watched as her mother would care for their family members, easing them through the difficult times, and helping O’Donnell herself find her calling in life.
“Seeing her handle all of that with such grace and compassion,” O’Donnell said. “It made me realize how important it is to have that when someone is passing. I wanted to be someone who could offer that.”
It was during this period of watching
her mother bring family members into their home and care for them in their final days that O’Donnell grew more and more interested in a career in funeral homes. But it was in the final stretch of her high school days, when she was 17 going on 18, that O’Donnell says she really fell in love with the science of the funeral process.
“People don’t realize how much science goes into it,” O’Donnell said. “It’s a lot of chemistry, anatomy, and physiology.”
Her interest in the field piqued, O’Donnell made the decision to go to college and study the field further. She also spent time working in and doing an apprenticeship at funeral homes her in Cecil County. After graduation, she turned her efforts to working in a couple of different funeral homes in Baltimore.
“To gain variety,” O’Donnell said.
But O’Donnell noticed the same trend at all of these funeral homes that concerned her: a focus on sales and profits rather than on compassion and being about the families. Funeral directors would place more importance
31 UPPER CHESAPEAKE | WOMEN TO WATCH 2024
on getting families to buy the bigger, fancier coffin than on whether or not the family was getting the support and comfort they needed throughout the funeral process.
She also noted just how expensive some of the funeral packages were, often in funeral homes in and around Cecil County, as she recalled the Baltimore-based funeral homes she worked in receiving calls from Cecil residents who were looking for more affordable funeral homes.
“You don’t have to go into debt to lay your loved ones to rest,” O’Donnell said.
Having identified a need in the community, O’Donnell set out to make a change. She began by going back to mortuary school in Baltimore – which she said was much harder than her undergraduate degree, but she also has found herself using every bit of

— O’Donnell
skill and knowledge from school in her everyday job.
“They make it as challenging as possible because it’s a very important job,” O’Donnell said.
During her time in mortuary school, O’Donnell met a strapping Irishman named Oisin O’Donnell at his job running the Irish pub that the mortuary students would congregate at late at night. Between her studies and working at Phillips Seafood to help pay her way through school, O’Donnell managed to convince Oisin to go out with her.
The couple are now married and have a girl, Isla, 3, and a boy, Oisin Jr., 2, with a third child due in July.
After getting her degree, O’Donnell and Oisin set out together on a journey: moving back to Elkton and opening O’Donnell’s own funeral home.
In April 2023, O’Donnell opened the doors on A. B. O’Donnell Cremation and Funeral Services. Just south of the Elkton Road–I-95 junction, O’Donnell said that they have helped over 100 families lay their loved ones to rest in the almost-year they have been in business.
“It’s been going really well,” O’Donnell said. “We have great reviews. We’ve worked with a lot of families that wouldn’t have otherwise been able to afford laying their loved ones to rest.”
Many families who can’t afford the services of a funeral home, their recourse is turning to the Anatomy Board in Baltimore, effectively surrendering their loved ones body for cremation.
“A lot of the time you don’t get your loved one’s ashes back,” O’Donnell said. “It’s very tragic.”
That’s part of the idea behind O’Donnell’s funeral home: providing burial options for families that are both affordable and dignified.
And it seems to be going well, with the 100-plus services performed in just a year show.
“It’s my hometown and I knew there was a need for something like this up
32 WOMEN TO WATCH 2024 | UPPER CHESAPEAKE
here,” O’Donnell said. “It feels better doing it this way than it did selling.”
While the new funeral director in town has seen a lot of positivity and grateful families, being a woman who is a funeral director has been one of the challenges she has faced. People shaking her male assistant’s hand before hers, others asking ‘is this your husband’s business?’, and expressing the hope that there’s someone else with her to help with moving things,
O’Donnell said she’s seen quite a bit of sexism in her career – but she’s optimistic for the future of Cecil County’s funeral homes.
“Hopefully all that’s changing here,” O’Donnell said. “The next generations of most of the [Cecil County] funeral homes are all women.”
O’Donnell is excited to see how things change and operate differently when more women take the reins of the funeral homes. She noted that she has observed that women funeral directors tend to have a bit more compassion, nurturing, and care towards people; as well as a little bit more care and attention to detail. Which, she quickly clarified, is not to say that she hasn’t seen plenty of men funeral directors with similar levels of care and compassion. However, O’Donnell noted that she has “noticed it a lot more in women.”
Running her own funeral home, while also beginning a young family, has been another – quite different –challenge for O’Donnell. She and Oisin decided on moving to Cecil County as much of O’Donnell’s family is still in the area, a perk that she
says has helped function as a impromptu daycare service when needed, a lifesaver for O’Donnell. She has also been working with Cecil County Public Schools as an AP Science mentor. As a mentor, O’Donnell has been working with a high school student throughout the academic year, offering advice, working on projects together, and helping to run experiments.
Oisin has also gotten into the family business with O’Donnell, becoming a licensed crematory operator.
“He was made for this,” O’Donnell said fondly. “He’s also giant so he shows up and people are very relieved.”
Despite the challenges she faces, O’Donnell finds professional fulfillment daily.
“When you are handing a loved one back to a family member or closing out a service, and they come up and are so appreciative, it’s very humbling and rewarding,” O’Donnell said.
The philosophy behind A.B. O’Donnell is one that she says she hopes can change the industry from what it is somewhat. Not focusing on sales, not having high services or casket prices, but making sure that their customers feel cared for.
“Their loved ones wouldn’t want them to be put in a position where they have to choose between getting their grandmother a very expensive wood casket or making a bill payment,” O’Donnell said.
The motto of the funeral home is: “We hope you never need us, but we’re here when you do,” which is the kind of compassion that O’Donnell wants to continue bringing to the industry.
Located at 4 Warner Road in Elkton, A.B. O’Donnell Cremation and Funeral Services, P.A. can accommodate any kind of funeral service for your loved one. O’Donnell can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK AS A GYM OWNER AND TRAINER WITH YOUR OWN FAMILY LIFE AND YOUR OWN CAREER AS A CROSSFIT ATHLETE?
Balance comes from several things: First being my family/support system. The statement “sometimes it takes a village” is accurate. My husband co-owns the gym and we are a true team both as owners and in our relationship as partners and parents. Life is ever changing as is our health and fitness. My fitness before I had our daughter was a little more competitive/flexible, but is now more focused on keeping the body moving and staying consistent in the gym.
Just because a major life event may happen, health and fitness is a lifelong journey and needs to be incorporated somehow.
Again, if you have a support system (family/friends/our awesome staff) they will help keep you consistent in being able to make time for yourself. If I am not working on myself NOW, it will make life in my aging years more challenging.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO ONE PURSUING CAREERS IN FITNESS, NUTRITION, OR RUNNING THEIR OWN GYM?
The fitness realm is alway evolving. Owning a gym or any business is not an easy task. If you have a passion both in your career and life it gives you more joy in your work. Having a growth mindset along the way and always having an open mind and being eager to learn more will keep you growing. The fitness industry may not be the highest earning salary but you can grow it to where you want to be if you work hard. A fitness career is a relationship business. You need to believe in what you provide, CARE about who you work with and that can really help you create a following; location can help as well.
WHAT IS MOST FULFILLING ABOUT YOUR WORK? WHAT MOST MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
Seeing the changes and progress of those we work with is very fulfilling. Whether it is our 70 year old members getting stronger and more capable with their every day life or our 20-30 year old members getting their first high skill movement (i.e. pull up/muscle up). It is through their consistency and success that demonstrates what we do is helping them to be better everyday and for their future lives.
The feeling of being helpful and bettering one’s life is a powerful experience. We live in a world that has an epidemic of being sedentary. We need to move and build muscle mass throughout our lives to continue our independence as we age and I/WE want to try and help as many people as we can to live as long as they can.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SELECTED AS A WOMAN TO WATCH?
When I opened the email notification letter I was utterly dumbfounded. I had to read the content a couple of times to verify I was processing it correctly. I set my phone down, leaned back in my chair and the tears rolled down my face. I felt like I had just received the biggest community group hug. I was mush.
Although I am not a seeker of acknowledgement and question my deserving of such, I consider it a great privilege, am honored and am deeply appreciative. With all of that being said, I am most excited about the advertisement of getting the word out about what the foundation of what I do, PEMF Therapy. It isn’t about or for me. It is for the people in our community who are losing or have lost hope in obtaining or regaining a state of health and wellness. This is a great opportunity to share that and I am most grateful.
38 WOMEN TO WATCH 2024 | UPPER CHESAPEAKE
WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK IN WELLNESS AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
What is enriching about my work? Everything! I never could have imagined my life being so enriched and fulfilling. “Wellness” is the state of being healthy and being healthy isn’t just physically but also mentally and spiritually. When you are actively trying to achieve it, you are growing. That doesn’t mean it comes easy. I’ve learned that I can either be anxious because I am hiding from something or I am anxious because I am striving for something. I don’t hide, I strive. This business affords me endless opportunities in my passion of self growth and gaining wisdom. From the administrative side, to the services, to new relationships, I am steady growing and man does it feel good. That’s enrichment!
Because of what I do specifically, I have met so many people in our community. With acquiring an abundance of clients in 16 months and 75% of them seeking health related help, I am consistently researching. Being a nurse gives me the advantage of having a medical background, but there’s a lifetime of learning in the complexity of how our body works and what healthy looks like for each person. I don’t confess to cure, treat or have all of anyones answers but I do find myself on a mission with every client. That goes for aesthetic services as well. My medical background is growing and I’m making a difference in the lives of others. That’s enrichment!
I have joined 3 local Chambers of Commerce. With this comes networking and establishing connections. I am building relationships with other business owners in the community who are willing to share their wisdom. That’s enrichment!
This business is God’s plan for my life, it is my purpose. Helping others obtain that state of wellness, loving and offering hope is the greatest blessing and it’s a gift that keeps on giving. For me, and because of my testament and journey, my true and deepest enrichment comes from blessings from the Lord. The Well Cell is one of them.
39 UPPER CHESAPEAKE | WOMEN TO WATCH 2024
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
I can’t say that I’ve faced challenges specifically as a woman that have carried around with me. My challenges with what I do specifically have to do with giving too much of myself and not refueling along the way. My first four months were so packed that when my cup ran out I was being fueled by the natural high of it, until I crashed. I had to close for a week and get away to rest, refuel and reset. I know I’m supposed to feed myself, keep my cup full and feed others from the overflow of my saucer but I haven’t mastered that yet.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE A YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANTS TO PURSUE A CAREER WORKING IN WELLNESS?
In my opinion, any part of this career path starts with loving people. If you can’t do that then this isn’t the direction for you. You must understand what “wellness” is, that it involves the individual as a whole, what is required to obtain it as well as maintain it. The terms wellness and holistic go hand-in-hand with the belief that the mind, body and spirit are interconnected.
Therefore, most wellness centers offer holistic services such as massage, yoga, light therapy, acupuncture, meditation, IV hydration, nutrition and these are just a few. You could work at a wellness clinic being involved in all services or you could specialize in a specific service. Regardless of the route you take, they all involve having a passion for helping others and if you have that passion then run with it because so many are in need of others who care.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST FULFILLING ASPECT OF YOUR WORK? WHAT MOST MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
This is my favorite question and I’ll never tire of it being asked. People ask me all the time, “How did you get into this?”. My response, “Well, it’s a God thing.” I believe I need to start with the fact that this is God’s plan for my life, it is my purpose, my “why”. It’s said that the two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you know why. Caring for others is what im good at, it just comes natural, but caring for me not so much. There’s a story, it’s a long one and involves a testimony that consist of more trenches than mountain top views but that’s part of what makes what I do so beautiful and blesses me beyond measure. Part of this story involves my own health journey of no answers, so “here take a pill.”
Fast forward through years of pain, lots of prayer, seeking, following and healing to the unveiling of my “why”. My pain turned into purpose. Soon after, The Well Cell was created so that I could help others not only with this great gift of PEMF but with the ability to empathize, to listen, to show compassion, to love and offer hope. So many walk through my door hurting, frustrated, hoping I can help or they’ve already lost it. I have been blessed by every person who has walked through my door regardless of reason. I have over 200 clients so I’d say I’m pretty blessed. I have developed some of the most beautiful relationships. We’ve cried together, we’ve laughed and cut up, we’ve brainstormed and we’ve never given up. More times than not I’m their last resort, and more times than not the plan we develop has worked. Sometimes they need more love than pain relief. Sometimes they just need someone to listen.
So to finally answer the question of what is most fulfilling, it is that I get to make a difference, I get to make a positive impact on someones life, I am able to leave others better than the way I found them. I get to love on others and the best part is that they do the same for me and they don’t even know it. Most don’t just disappear, they refer others, bring family and friends, they stop in to say Hi or schedule an appt just to recharge and talk life. Honestly, fulfilling is an understatement.
What motivates me to continue doing what I’m doing...
1. All of the above is truly enough but that’s not all I have.
2. When I’m out and about for a respite with friends or dinner, I sometimes hear “oh I’ve heard about you and I need to come see you”, “so and so told me you helped them with .… I have this and that can you help me?”, “you’re doing good things, keep it up.”
3. This is my “why” and nothing has fulfilled, enriched or brought me greater joy. I am truly and wholeheartedly in love with what I do. I’ve only gotten started. My vision is big and when God’s your partner you GO BIG!
I was sick for many years, forcing myself through my days. Undiagnosable by every Dr and the only answers were to take a pill, or 5! Totally unacceptable and beyond frustrated I spent hours almost everyday searching the web in attempt to find my own answers. In the midst I came across PEMF and jumped on the opportunity to learn more by attending a conference where I purchased my first machine.
This business is God’s plan for my life, it is my purpose. Helping others obtain that state of wellness, loving and offering hope is the greatest blessing and it’s a gift that keeps on giving. For me, and because of my testament and journey, my true and deepest enrichment comes from blessings from the Lord.
I am truly and wholeheartedly am in love with what I do
So many have been failed by our health care system and my goal is to restore that hope.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN, PARTICULARLY AS YOUR CAREER TOOK YOU FROM NURSE TO COO?
I began my nursing journey in the Emergency Department, gradually rising through various roles within the hospital setting until transferring to the role of COO in 2016. Each transition in my career was accompanied by fresh challenges and opportunities for growth, along with heightened levels of accountability and responsibility. I embraced these changes and the chance to continuously learn and exemplify the invaluable contributions of the nursing profession.
Working in a federally qualified health center entails navigating complex regulatory landscapes, meeting the diverse needs of vulnerable populations, and balancing limited resources with the imperative of delivering quality care. Adapting to evolving healthcare policies and compliance standards adds further complexity. The demanding nature of this position requires significant time and energy investment.
Balancing the demands of a thriving career with those of family pose challenges requiring planning, flexibility, and sacrifice. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my loving husband and mother, whose steadfast encouragement and understanding have been instrumental in navigating the delicate equilibrium. Their support has enabled me to navigate these challenges with grace and resilience.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS IN HEALTHCARE?
For young women aspiring to pursue a career in healthcare, I offer this advice: Embrace the journey with confidence and determination. Healthcare is not only a rewarding field but also one where you have the opportunity to make a significant difference in people’s lives every day. Whether you choose nursing or any other path within healthcare, know that there is ample opportunity for advancement and growth. Nursing, in particular, opens doors to a multitude of career options, from clinical practice to leadership roles and beyond. Invest in yourself and your education, as continuous learning will be your greatest asset in this dynamic and ever-evolving field. Believe in your capabilities, stay passionate about your work, and never underestimate the impact you can have on the lives of others through your dedication to healthcare.
OF THE MANY PROGRAMS YOU HAVE STARTED, WHICH HAS BEEN THE MOST FULFILLING? ARE THERE ANY PROGRAMS YOU HOPE TO START?
There isn’t one particular program I have helped to start that brings me the most fulfillment but more the collective result of numerous programs and initiatives that have led to improved health outcomes for patients and the community. It’s immensely gratifying to have the opportunity to support and lead a team of dedicated professionals who are diligently working to make a positive difference in the lives of the people we serve. Seeing the collective efforts of our team lead to tangible improvements in health and well-being is truly rewarding.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A WOMAN TO WATCH?
It is an honor to be selected as one of this year’s women to watch. Ten years ago, I would never have expected to be in this position. It is proof that if you chase your dreams with all the energy you have, the outcome will certainly exceed the exception.
I am so inspired by the other women who have been selected this year and in years past. It is such a surreal feeling to be recognized in the same category as so many other influential businesswomen.
WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK AS A BUSINESS OWNER AND IN THE RISING SUN COMMUNITY?
To Enrich: to improve or enhance the quality or value of. Enriching is seeing the smiles on my customer’s faces. Having the opportunity to engage with so many people each day adds value to my life. Whether our guests visit daily or are popping in for the first time everyone is treated like a friend. It brings me so much joy to look out over my full café knowing that I am providing our community members with a positive and cozy gathering space.
I am so fortunate to see relationships between my customers and their families grow and evolve as they make memories and chat over coffee. The Rising Sun community proves that people need people and there is strength in human connection. In my café, we share our lives and our stories. We laugh, cry, pray, and encourage one another; as we support, we become better versions of ourselves. Enriching is knowing that something I created has benefited the lives of so many. As I always say: “It is so much more than just coffee.”

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN WHO OWNS A BUSINESS?
My parents and husband’s parents are business owners. I was raised watching hard working and successful individuals. When starting my business I saw no difference in myself. I knew that in order to accomplish my goals I would have to work just as hard as those who taught me. My father still reminds me to never give up and that we are capable of enormous success if we surround ourselves with uplifting people.
I believe that whatever your gender, challenges in entrepreneurship will certainly present themselves. Time, employees, financials, and deadlines all demand your attention, but having confidence in yourself and in your ability is key. Success is learning to find balance while managing your career, family, health, and personal goals. The more dedicated you are to your priorities, the greater your reward.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS RUNNING THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
If a young woman came to me asking if she should pursue a new business venture, I would say absolutely yes, but find a way to positively serve others! Service provides everlasting significance. Your calling is unique to you, stemming from your individual God given talents. It’s our obligation to use our gifts to bless others. By denying our full potential we are limiting ourselves and those who could benefit from our work.
For several years, I was employed as an administrative assistant and while there were many aspects of that job that I loved, it was not my calling. Making the choice to quit my job and start my own business was a big and scary jump, however, my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. When I started my career as an entrepreneur, I found my second home and my passion. Opening and running a business can be overwhelming, but if you use your business as a platform to do good, making excellence your brand, it will be one of your most rewarding accomplishments.
If you don’t know where to begin, reach out to me and I will help you take the first few steps.
WHAT HAS BEEN MOST FULFILLING IN YOUR TIME RUNNING RISING ‘N GRIND CAFÉ? WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT IN RISING ‘N GRIND AND RISING SUN’S FUTURES?
My experience running Rise N Grind Café has been incredibly fulfilling in more ways than I could have ever imagined. The relationships I’ve made through owning my own business are priceless. The small-town community of Rising Sun and its leaders are incredibly supportive, they have taught me that strangers who care quickly become friends. I have the pleasure of guiding my dedicated staff as they grow and learn and help them to polish skills they will utilize in different phases of their lives. I am blessed beyond words to be able to work alongside my children and my husband. They have made me extremely proud. I believe I’ve made them proud as well and that means the world to me.
I am excited for the endless growth possibilities here at Rise N Grind Cafe. We are constantly evolving and creating. We look for options and new ideas to keep our community excited and invested. I am looking forward to the addition of potential new businesses so that we can continue to build our Main Street into an adorable, walkable town.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A WOMAN TO WATCH?
I am very honored to be nominated as a business woman to watch! I hope that I can mentor other women who may be considering opening a business and give them the courage to pursue their dreams.
WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK AS THE OWNER OF CAFE ON THE BAY AND IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
I love that the cafe has become a place where people enjoy starting their day or meeting up with others for breakfast or lunch. Chesapeake City has such a “Hallmark” small town feel and I love the sense of community in town. Getting involved and sponsoring community events and little league teams has helped us to meet so many new people. It’s rewarding to watch local families raise their children and give many of those kids their first job experience.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
I don’t feel like being a woman has created any unique challenges beyond what any business owner has faced. Any business owner must be self driven and motivated to be successful. Over the years, the gender roles have evolved and while women typically are the ones with the added responsibility of raising a family, I don’t feel like women are looked down upon for choosing a career. If anything, owning a business has afforded me the flexibility to work and also be there for the kids when they came home from school, volunteer in their classrooms and in the community. My sons who are now 23 and 25 have grown up watching me work long and hard hours to provide for our family and know that there is no limit to what one can achieve.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS OWNING THEIR OWN BUSINESSES?
Find something you’re passionate about and make it happen! Follow your instincts, you might not have instant successes but if you continue to put in the effort it will be worth it in the end!
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR BUSINESS WITH YOUR INVOLVEMENT AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CHESAPEAKE CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY? WHAT MOST MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
I’m fortunate enough to have a good staff in place which allows me to be able to help with the Chamber. I’m all about giving back to the community and making it a better place to live and visit. I enjoy collaborating with other business owners in the Chamber of Commerce to help bring more fun events to town.
Together we are all better. Chesapeake City is a hidden gem that is quickly turning into a destination for many in the surrounding area and I want the visitors to love our town just as much as the locals do.

WHAT IS ENRICHING ABOUT YOUR WORK IN LAW AND AS THE OWNER OF YOUR OWN PRACTICE?
It is a privilege to help families in my community get through difficult times when going through divorce or custody cases. As a business owner, it is exciting to be able to employ friends and family and contribute to our community.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE FACED AS A WOMAN IN THE LEGAL FIELD?
Just trying to balance my legal career and family. One of the reasons I started my own firm was to be able to manage my own time. It can be difficult at times, but it is definitely possible.

WHAT IS SOME ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO WANT TO OR ARE PURSUING CAREERS IN LAW OR AS THE OWNERS OF THEIR OWN BUSINESSES?
Take the risk. It is hard work and you have to be willing to grind every day, but it is so rewarding. As a woman, do not let anyone make you feel like you have to choose between having a family and a career, you can do both and be a great example for your children and other young women.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK AS AN ATTORNEY WITH YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY? WHAT MOST MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
Simply put, I just truly love what I do. I am motivated to do what I do because I care about the people in my community and they put their trust in me to help them through their difficult times.
