the doctor of the extreme

Francis Le Guen is an adventurer, explorer, photographer, journalist as well as a writerpresenter. He dives in fresh waters, lakes, caves, underground rivers, and has explored the seven seas. He wrote several books, directed movies, presented and hosted programs such as Carnets d’expédition, Carnets de plongée, Bleu Clair, La route de l’eau and Ushuaïa.

Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff is a Professor and a Doctor of Volcanology. As a Professeur-Researcher, he wrote and co-wrote more than 350 books, publications and essays about volcanos. Fond of traveling, he has joined several television crews, among which Ushuaïa Nature and France 3. He is often on television to inform the audiences about active volcanos.

Frédéric Buyle holds four free-diving world records. After ten years of competition, he dedicates his time to photo reporting, filming documentaries and teaching free-diving. He uses his competences to help field scientists with telemetry labeling big sea animals, counting them and following their tracks.

Emmanuel Blanche was in charge of medical logistics during the making of Ushuaïa Nature for eleven years. Anesthetist at the Castres Hospital, he is used to practicing A&E medicine in the mountains or on the seabed. He is an accomplished sportsman, fond of climbing and swimming and a professional diver.

Possibility to visit Ubud, the artists’ village in the center of the island and meet the villagers. Walks in the rice-fields to discover Bali’s flora and fauna to the rhythm of local life.

Learn how to free-dive with frédéric buyle

Free-diving ensures a greater agility in water and a better approach of underwater fauna. A technique to make your own for a full appreciation of ocean floors.

Frédéric Buyle, world champion free-diver will initiate you to the relaxation techniques essential for your first free-dive. Called “pranyama” in yoga, this complete breathing technique has expected as well as unexpected benefits: longer apnea, greater breath control, mental focus, calm, greater breathing capacity, better air cell combustion, lung detox from residual air, internal organs and stomach massage... The first free-dives will put into practice all

the advice received during the crossing. The divers will be surprised of their capacity to stay under water for long periods of time allowing them the encounters with the treasures offered by Indonesian ocean floors. 15 +331 42 25 95 34 -

Sail on two of Indonesia’s most luxurious boats*

Phinisi cruises Two boats, two traditional phinisis. The Aleph and the Silolona offer cruising that is as luxurious as it is authentic. Based west of Florès Island, the Silolona navigates across a small archipelago dominated by Komodo and Rinca Islands. From there she sails along the secluded beaches and then onto the exceptional diving sites of the Flores Sea.

16

travell exper trav experience

Further up north, off Borneo’s coast, the Aleph plays the same role. Sailing between Kakaban, Derawan and Sangalaki, the boat combines luxury with discovery, favoring the exploration of the exceptional sites that are amongst the most remote and unspoiled in Indonesia. The phinisis are escorted by other sailboats, at the disposal of scientists, tour guides and the film crew.

Komodo Island

with FranCis Le Guen

West of Flores Island, Komodo and Rinca are home to the famous Komodo dragons and to a wealth of undersea fauna.

After a tour of the island meeting with Komodo’s monitor lizards, discover two wonderful and complementary diving sites in the great strait of Kode. Explore in real filming conditions the depth of Cannibal Rock with Francis Le Guen and a local guide as your leaders, under the watch of René Heuzey’s camera. The water is 79°F, as green as it is planktonic. And an astonishing wealth of life abounds. Every square inch of rock is paved with

multicolor life: sponges, crinoids, sea cucumbers, sea fans, corals amongst a merrygo-round of fish, with songs of whales in the distance. The second site, Yellow Wall, is where you will find again blue, clear, yet somewhat cooler waters. Here the two oceans meet up - the Pacific and the Indian... Visit the underwater cliffs covered in corals and yellow anemones, in the waters where dolphins are also frequent visitors.

Initiation to volcanology on the ring of fire of the Wallace Line. The earth’s crust is divided into plates moving at a few inches per year. Their borders, such as Indonesia, are of major geological interest, for they are centers of vigorous volcanic activity. The drifting of the islands has favored the isolation and the evolution of endemic species. Cross the famous Wallace Line, which separates two extremely different living worlds, the Indomalaya and the Australian bio-geo-

graphical spheres. It runs between Borneo and Sulawesi and between Bali and Lombok. Animal and vegetal species are very different on each side of the border (for example orangutan, in Sumatra and Borneo, babirusa, in Sulawesi). It is believed that these islands were separated for a long period of time and that solely the drifting of the plates brought them closer together.

Fly over the volcanic chain and land on top of Mount Kelimutu to enjoy the view of three colored lakes. Volcanic craters sometimes hold perfectly circular and fabulously colorful lakes. Rainwater changes into sulfuric and hydrochloric acids when in contact with volcanic gases. Mount Kelimutu is unique on the planet for it contains three very different crater lakes, though close to one another: the mysterious lake, whose color changes from red to turquoise blue, the lake of the

young, acid and jade green, and the lake of the ancient, black profound. Flying over the lakes is the occasion to appreciate this palette of the gods. Landing on the caldera plunges travelers into the heart of the dĂŠcor. Expedition on the ridge that separates the lake of the young from the lake of the ancient to fully appreciate the telluric power of this sacred place.

Chances of encounter with the whale sharks on the way back from “The Channel” are high. Depending on the weather and the mood, dive at the “Fish Soup” site, amongst fish tornados and endemic species such as pygmy seahorses, leaf fish, mandarinfish, ghost pipefish, walking fish as well as all sorts of nudibranches.

Understand sea vortices with francis le guen

Disembark in addendum on Rinca Island’s west coast, in the midst of the floating village of Bugis families. No sooner have you set foot there the monitor lizards come along... With the local guides, explore the mangrove swamps and surrounding savannas to observe the life-style of these dragons that are at home in this environment. This is the occasion for Francis Le Guen and Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff to explain the mysteries of the Wallace Line and of the ring of fire that mould the landscapes and determine the wealth of the local fauna. Back on the boats, sail north towards the Tatawa and Lawa Laut reefs. On the way, observe the formation of vortices. Francis Le Guen will explain the dynamism of these waters of fury and the upwelling mechanism responsible for the abundant sea fauna. At the “Cauldron” site the sea seems to be sucked into a bottomless well…

The adventure’s encompassing theme is diving through the Derawan Atoll. This stop can be a good opportunity for beginners to be initiated to diving in calm and warm waters. Even experienced divers love diving between beams of a bridge decorated with rare species. Not far from there, after a dive with large green turtles, Francis Le Guen will explain, under the watch of René Heuzey’s camera, the functioning of a reef ’s ecosystem. At the southern end of the Kakaban coral reef dwells a shoal of hundreds of barracudas playing in the current. Dive along the underwater cliffs down to 79 ft to encounter the reef sharks, and also silvertip sharks, zebra sharks, tunas and other pelagic fish. Starting from the beach, a 30-minute walk across the forest and on wooden bridges allows to reach a vast interior lake, isolated

from the sea for thousands of years. Dive or free-dive in this incredible ecosystem in brackish water where palpitate millions of non-stinging jellyfishes: the absence of predators caused them to lose their now powerless venom. Lastly, the Sangalaki Atoll is known for the abundance of great manta rays. Some measure up to 20 ft in wingspread and it is not rare to see up to 20 of them floating, weightless, over a “cleaning station”. Francis Le Guen will explain how to approach them best to find oneself the midst of their ballet.
