This logo design was one of my first freelance projects. The job was subcontracted by an Ellensburg web designer as part of a rebranding effort, including a new name, website, logo, and stationery. The client’s initial request was a logo that featured a setting sun with defined rays. Using thumbnails and rough comps, we were able to collectively define a logo that better suited his business needs. The client appreciated being guided through the process and has received positive feedback on the results. The logo assignment was later extended to include a full range of stationery.

This sign for Island Habitat Condominiums provided a new challenge. It required extensive research on sign regulations, material use, and finding a potential builder. We were required to develop schematic drawings, as shown below. This project was valuable in allowing us to work within a different scale, medium, and design theory.

This project was introduced as an in-class event logo design competition. The event and contest are held at CWU annually. Organizers of the rape awareness event provided a set of guidelines and a committee later narrowed the submissions down to three. The top three designs were displayed in the university’s student union building, giving students and visitors the opportunity to cast their vote. I was excited to have been picked by both a committee of event staff and by the student body.

I have had the pleasure of working with Puget Sound Energy and the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility on a freelance basis since fall of 2013. Pictured to the left are two event posters that have been distributed throughout the county. The designs were also adapted for other purposes, such as paid advertisements.

This project provided an exciting opportunity to expand my scope of sign work. The sign was created for Ward Rugh, a major hay company in Kittitas County, as a way to add visual interest to a large warehouse along a major roadway. While the company provided a high resolution photo, I was left to manipulate it into a graphic that extended 122’ x 10’. Adjustments were made to extend the field and background hill sides. Because the sign highlights the beauty of the area and demonstrates Ward Rugh’s commitment to the community, the product has resulted in superior resident buy-in on a building that could be seen as a detriment.

The assignment for this project was to develop three designs that created a cohesive look but were strong enough to be sold individually. I chose to create a challenge by selecting a long standing brand and redeveloping its packaging. While Stanley produces products that are easily identifiable, their packaging lacked any impact. This new design maintains elements true to the Northwest while meeting current design trends.

In an earlier class assignment, I designed the display font to the left. Utilizing that font, we were challenged to create a unique feature piece. I developed an interactive maze and applied it to an everyday item that typically lacked user engagement. The use of the font enhanced and solidified the company brand.

The Stanford University Health Improvement Program approached the CWU graphic design class with a logo design challenge. Through extensive sketching, thumbnail, and rough comp design, I was able to create a logo that represented the goals and objectives of the Stanford project. The course instructor submitted minimum of five designs to choose from and mine was selected. The stationery mock up was created at request of HIP. It has been an honor to see a personal logo design implemented on a large scale.

ProStar came to the Copy Shop as a start up business looking to have a business card designed. As the relationship grew, they hired us for their signage needs. The building sign is 96 x 42 and is complemented by paint to match the original mock up and decals on each of the doors. ProStar has been able to create an entire brand identity from the logo first created for a small business card design.

Logos are undoubtedly one of the most critical elements to a company’s marketing presence. For this reason, it is one of the design fields I enjoy most. I have worked to develop a variety of styles and aesthetics in order to create original, eye catching graphics that best suit each client. The above logos represent a small selection of the work I have recently created.
