But we indians have only lost interest in handicrafts and hence have a very less knowledge about it. Therefore, to spread its knowledge amongst Indians, we are creating a chhattisgarh handicraft retail store to promote chhattisgarh’s exclusive handicraft for which this place is known all over the world.

Crafts of Chhattisgarh
Crafts of Chattisgarh have been demand in India and abroad. They depict the craftsmanship of the people of the state. There is a wide range of crafts produced in different regions of the country. The bamboo craft of the state is an excellent example of crafts. The tribal communities produce daily as well as decorative items out of bamboo. The well-known bamboo products in the state are agricultural implement, fishing traps, hunting tools and baskets. The woodwork of the state involves making beautiful decorative wooden products. The craftsmen of the state carve beautiful wooden ceilings, doors, lintels etc which requires different kinds of wood like shisham, teak, dhudi, sal and kikar. They also make pipes, masks, doors, window frames and sculptures and images.
The wall painting of the state is associated with traditions and customs. Pithora painting is the most traditional art form. These paintings depict the offering to God and are usually done on marriage ceremonies, childbirth and other occasions. In most of the paintings the horse is always there as it is considered auspicious to sacrifice a horse. In tribal homes Pithora paintings are very common. It requires natural colours and they are very colourful. Jewellry from Chattisgarh is dexterously crafted in gold, silver, bronze and mixed metal. Ornaments are also made of beads, cowries and feathers and they are very much a part of the tribal costumes. The tribal men and women both wear traditional ornaments, which are attractive and vibrant.

Bastar is a tribal region in Chhattisgarh, blessed with an exceptional scenic beauty that beckons the lovers of nature to explore the forests, waterfalls, wildlife, ancient temples, tribal dances and music. It has plenty to offer to its visitors with its valuable tribal art and culture
Handicraft ~ The act of ‘hand-crafting’ an object to suffice a daily chore; to pacify a need of faith; as an artistic expression; or perhaps to hone the dexterity of a pair of hands. This act of ‘crafting’ is but the most potent proof of the ‘civil-ness’ within any civilization. The ancient act of crafting almost always is a reflection of the times… and sometimes is powerful enough to make time itself its reflection.

Bastar tribal art Prominent amongst the Tribal arts is the Bastar Art practiced by the tribals of the Bastar- region , India and is known the world over for their unique artifacts. Bastar is a district covered by forests. It is home to a large number of aboriginal clans better known in India as Tribes or Tribals. Wall hangings of Bastar crafts grace homes the world over, attracting the attention of art enthusiasts and the connoisseur alike. The Bastar artifacts usually depict the rural lifestyle of the tribal community, incorporating pastoral scenes with the farmer as the main focus. Tribals were surely the first metal smiths of India and they still continue with the ancient practice. These tribal artists create some of the most famous tribal imagery in iron -bringing out a unique view of life, nature and the gods, through age-old processes of metalwork. Their process is simple - it basically includes forging and hammering the metal. Using only a few tools and a simple furnace of a handful of coals, they twist and bend hot iron into expressive shapes.
The Bastar district specializes in the preparation of items from the Dhokra Handicraft. This process calls for a great deal of precision and skill. The artifacts prepared from Dhokra technique of this art use the cow dung, paddy husk and red soil in the preparation, beeswax being the most important one. Apart from contouring, wax wires are also used for decoration purpose and for giving a finishing touch to artifacts. From the Bell Metal Handicraft of Chhattisgarh in India, the real genius and creative faculty of the artisans come into picture and thus make for some of the most wonderful pieces of art. The Dhokra and Bell Metal Handicraft can be found all over the world but the way in which the artisans of Chhattisgarh carve the things by the impression of their sheer dexterity is worth watching.

In India, craft is a community industry performed for community service and the intension is for its wide use rather than its wide appreciation or specific recognition of the individual, therefore each piece is itself the creation of a unique pair of hands. Due to modernization, people have left behind the idea of handicrafts. Through this project, we aim to bring back handicraft culture in the lives of indian society and spread knowledge about it.

DHOKRA MANUFACTURING PROCESS 1.
2.
Woman of the household powder and sieve the black clay or kali maati.
4.
3.
The clay is kneaded with rice husk.
5.
Thin strands of bees wax are extruded through a PICHKI with the help of a THASSA
7.
6.
The strands of bees wax emerging from the PICHKI
8.
The clay mould is wrapped completely with wax strands.
A composite mould is made by applying layers of soil soil mixes and drying it in the sun.
The mould is coated with the sticky juice of the leaves of green beans called SEM.
9.
A wooden spatula is used to flatten the strands so as to smoothen the background and highlights the decoration
26
The mould is covered with a layer of clay, sawdust and charcoal.
10
11
The mould is baked at 1100 Degrees Celsius. This melts the wax and creates a fine cavity between the layers of clay
13
12
Metal is melted and pored into the cavity. The molten metal flows through the space and takes on the impression of the walls of the clay mould
14
The mould is broken, followed by filling and brushing of the artifact.
Finished product after polishing and buffing is ready to display.
27
The mould is allowed to cool for two to three hours and is frequently sprinkled to with water, This hastens the cooling process and softens the mould for breaking.
To create a handicraft retail store to promote chhattisgarh’s handicraft. The basic concept will be based on the depleting Chhattisgarh’s handicraft, their technique, expressions and the way they are made. The entire look and feel of the store will be inspired from the handicraft of chhattisgarh : Dhokra, Bamboo work, Wrought iron, Cowrie work, Terracotta. Deep within its bowels, a craft holds the myths, legends, and faiths that lent it its form, these stories desperately need to be shared with the onlooking audience. These stories not only help the onlooker appreciate the craft righteously but also offer many a lessons in humble living. It’s the transfer of this valuesystem more than the craft itself, which is the objective of the ‘BATAKI’ project.
The ‘BATAKI’ project was conjured to play that key role of storytelling, and therewith bringing social and commercial benefits to the artisan settlements. We desire to become the instrument though which the artisans can directly connect with the global audience, we desire to be the resource which helps craft sell not as objects but stories and ideologies. We are vying to make not just ‘sales’ but ‘dialogues’ between the craftsmen and their patrons, encouraging ‘co-creation’ possibilities and a collective growth. ABOVE ALL, WE WANT TO IDENTIFY AND RECOGNIZE THE FACELESS ARTISANS.
28
29
Logo The name of this store has been derived from the chhattisgarhi word ‘Bataki’ which means ‘duck’. This was done taking in mind a duck’s curvy and flowy silhuoette. Hence the specific fonts were chosen for their fluidity and movement. In contrast to this, the earthy colours and the use of a shield and spear in the design, depict the rough and sturdy aspect of Chhattisgarh. Put together, this logo signifies the intricate and delicate yet sturdy and reliable work done by the earnest artisans of Chattisgarh.
