“I have always wanted to learn something helpful for my dance career and possibly be able to help people in the future. I thought Pilates would be something that my body knows/would connect to my ballet experience well. When I look back, I’d say I didn’t know what “Pilates” really was until I studied this deeply. It was a good decision that I jumped into this journey even though my English was hopelessly poor at that point.” “Pilates exercises on machines are a faster way to make you stronger. They approach individual muscles you need to work on. I liked the quick result on my body. As you take classes, you would get more benefits, such as flexibility, stability, awareness of the body, stress management, and relaxation. Pilates offers these great benefits to our daily life too. I love how Pilates works for everyone with different backgrounds and goals.”

PART 2/3

“Circuit breaker & Phase 1 period was a really difficult time for us. Our daily practice required a big space and dance floor which we don’t usually have at home. I got a dance mat but the space was not big enough for centre work. I ended up kicking many things in my room while working from home. (Hahaha) I knew there would be a limit to my practice, so I decided to focus on the basics instead of dancing as much as I can in limited space. This situation forced me to train without any pilates machines too. However, I realized Pilates mat exercise can be very effective by using small props such as exercise bands (I really like Sonata’s ones!) and small Pilates balls. While giving Instagram live streams and Zoom private sessions, I became more creative and modified exercises using towels or glass bottles. All these training made it a lot smoother to go back to dancing in the studio. I also saw improvement in myself from these training. I would like to continue to see how much more I can improve.” Mai Suzuki (@mai_pilates2020) Artist, Singapore Dance Theatre

PART 3/3

“Everyone struggled during the stay home period, but I really appreciate all of my friends and people who connected with me through online Pilates/Body Conditioning sessions. It gave me great motivation when I saw and heard their progressions and good feedback. Everyone’s happy voices made me really happy. Happiness is contagious and it was a lovely reward for me in this difficult time.” Mai Suzuki (@mai_pilates2020) Artist, Singapore Dance Theatre

Why did you decide to take up yoga? “I took a yoga class for the first time at my former ballet school in Japan. It gave me a very new feeling that I loved very much and I knew I would definitely want to do more.” “I mainly do yoga to condition my body. It’s a great way to tone my muscles, train my core, and increase flexibility. It also helps me relax my mind.”
