Following in the footsteps of Borgia

4

The Borgias were a European Papal family of Spanish origin with the name stemming from the familial fief seat of Borja belonging to their Aragonese Lords; they became prominent during the Renaissance. The Borgias were patrons of the arts, and their support allowed many artists of the Renaissance to realize their potential. The most brilliant personalities of this era regularly visited their court. The Borgias became prominent in ecclesiastical and political affairs in the 1400s and 1500s. Today they are remembered for their corrupt rule when one of them was pope. They have been accused of many different crimes, including adultery, simony, theft, rape, bribery, incest, and murder (especially murder by arsenic poisoning). Because of their search for power, they made enemies of other powerful families such as the Medici and the Sforza, as well as the influential Dominican friar Savonarola. In the 2011 was created a television series based on the Borgia Family.

The discovery of homosexuality in Ancient Rome

14

The issue of homosexuality in ancient Rome must necessarily be addressed through the vision of the world and sexuality typical of ancient societies, very different from the modern one. For the majority of ancient societies and especially in the Classical Greece and Rome, there was a real distinction based on sexual orientation or gender identity typical of an individual, but rather to its role in sexual intercourse: in practice sexual identification, and the laws governing sexual relations were based not on the fact that the object of desire was a person of the opposite sex or the same sex, but on the fact if that person played an active role, associated with the virility and masculinity, or a passive one. Was unknown to the ancient Romans, however, the modern concept of homosexuality, just for the fact that the identification was done on the basis of sexual role during sexual intercourse. The homosexual practice in Rome affirms very early on the power of the citizen on the slaves, confirming its firm Roman man virility masculine. With the conquest of Greece, together with the Greek culture, Rome also absorbs many customs, including the "vice greek". But the Romans, or rather the "cives" Romans, that is, those who were considered citizens of Rome, they practiced homosexuality only with slaves and freedmen. It was regrettable that a Roman citizen to assume the passive role in a homosexual relationship, because this was in conflict with the ideology of masculine and dominated the whole Roman society. Even famous men like Julius Caesar, founder of the Gens Julia, or emperors Adriano as practiced homosexual relations: homosexuality, bisexuality or better Caesar was well recorded by Cicero, Plutarch and Suetonius, while the Emperor Hadrian had for years as a lover preferred the young slave Antinoo of

Hotel Moresco is a sheltered and convenient haven, a jetty guests can set out from and a landing stage they return to. The hotel is ideal for exploring a city that is always fascinating but often very demanding on visitors. Located just a short walk from Piazzale Roma and the railway station, on the Rio Novo, one of the most important and well-‐served canals of the city, the hotel offers the right combination of a peaceful location and easy access to means of transport. Each bedroom is different from the others, but they are all the same for their comfort, style and refinement. An antique mirror, a view over the canal, a gold-‐leafed mosaic on the walls: each bedroom has a least one detail that makes it absolutely unique and will remind you of your stay. In the calm of the fragrant and cool Venetian night, just one sound seems to break the silence: the lapping of the water around the oar of a gondola. Yes, it is only a figment of our imagination, but in the peace and quiet of the bedrooms at Hotel Moresco, who knows, you may even be able to hear it.

“Relax?! Great cuisine?! Hospitality?! Saturnia Tuscany Hotel is as if you were at home… but with 4 stars” “…the wellness spa was welcoming and well organized… we ate extremely well in the restaurant… and the hotel, surrounded by greenery, is in an amazing position… we were disappointed not to have been able to use the beautiful outdoor pool because of the temperature… but it will be one of the many reasons why we’ll be back!” “I think that for the technical information the hotel website and photos are sufficient; they speak for themselves! However, the human warmth and the pleasant atmosphere that one experiences in this place cannot, unfortunately, be perceived unless someone who has lived it firsthand tells of it!” “New structure, well-‐furnished, and managed in an excellent way. Furthermore, the staff were very courteous and helpful too. Very close to the hot springs, even though the less ‘active’ can easily opt for the internal wellness spa. The quality of the restaurant was also surprising. Definitely recommended.”
