RENOVATION OF THE ABANDONED CERAMIC FACTORY
Location: Xuanhua District, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, China
Type of work: Individual work
Project Description: Xuanhua is an "industrial town" with a century-old industrial culture where the ceramic factory was built in 1942 and has now been moved to Tangshan City. Since then, the factory has been abandoned for a long time. The aim of the design is to reorganise the resources of the site and to give the site a new function in order to revitalise the building.
Inspired by architect Wei Na's concept of emotional design, the design tries to bring in the inner world of the user, connecting human emotions with the space, and building a place for people to relax and relieve stress at the edge of the city. The original parameter of the building and industrial elements like tubes, chimneys and bricks are preserved. People can read, do ceramic crafts, see exhibitions and so on. The ideal spatial state is "suffused".
During the process, I try to increase the spiritual height of design and say goodbye to indifferent architecture, but simultaneously I refuse to make my architectural designs lose rationality and evolve into a one-sided pursuit of complex image games.

DESIGN STRATEGY
"Architecture" in "Emotional Architecture" can be a noun or a verb. It aims to explore the state of architecture more, a state in which people experience emotional changes in architecture. It is a scene dominated by artistic conception, supported by emotions, beyond material form, and organized by a series of people and buildings. After experiencing these scenes, the emotion in the architecture finally obtained.

SCENARIO 1: Out— Lost City
"On a sunny weekend, I gradually got closer to this industrial area away from the noise of the city, and the strong industrial atmosphere made me feel that the process of coming here from the city was a time-travelling journey. The elements left over from the industrial era inspired a sense of disorientation as I couldn't find the urban elements."
Emotional vocabulary: lost
SCENARIO 3: Recalling— the past years
In the screening room, I learned a lot about ceramics through the film. In a trance I heard children... yes, children were doing ceramics outside. I felt relaxed and happy amidst the children's laughter...

SCENARIO 2: In— Under the illusion
"This is where ceramics were once produced. Walking into this corridor driven by curiosity, it was as if I had stepped back in time. When I came out, I watched the birds flying in the sky and felt the sound of the wind, and a sense of peace and quiet replaced the lost feeling I had before."
Emotional vocabulary: peaceful
SCENARIO 4: MYSEIF— Life elsewhere
The sound of the leaves outside the window and the gurgling water made me feel peaceful. I realised that reading a book seemed like a good option at this time of day. So, I bought a cup of coffee and chose one of my favourite books on the shelf to read. The warmth of the sun through my fingertips made me feel warm and cosy...
