The Pink Flower The Pink flower in my hand Asks me, ‘Am I beautiful?’ ‘Do I remind you of Spring?’ I laugh at it’s vanity I tell her - ‘You are a fool’ ‘Don’t you see You will not last this week’ ‘Your beauty is transient, These daisies are an illusion; The frost is lurking around Waiting to take it’s place. And soon, before you know, It will be winter - cold and grey. Don’t you feel ? The descending fog, Made of your saddest thoughts, Ready to cover All, in a dampen gloom?’ She stares at me, with an ignorant bliss She smiles and says ‘Oh, It doesnot matter.’ ‘for Now I am pink And this you will remember!’

Abstract The thesis explores the potential role of culture and creativity in urban regeneration especially in case of post-colonial cities of the developing world using the case of Kolkata, India. RECLAIMED URBAN GREEN

RAIN WATER COLLECTOR/ OAT

CREATIVE HUB

European cities engaged in re-generating themselves using cultural policies are examined to identify common trends that could help in translation of the Creative city ideology into a generic planning paradigm that can be applied for cities in a diverse context. The strategies and tools assessed are enlisted in to following broad categories - Public Space – Build Heritage Architecture - Infrastructure – Intangible Cultural Heritage. Using these categories the project aims to rejuvenate the historic-core city of Kolkata. For the second part of the project historical and statistical data, infrastructure and spatial structure of the city of Kolkata was analysed to identify the potential for social restructuring through culture-led development and resulted in a territorial strategy for a culture and creative industry corridor. The thesis concludes in developing an Urban Design strategy for College Street Area and Architectural design strategy for adapting the urban ruin of College Street Municipal Market as a Creative hub.

Role As Project Architect involved since conception of Design to completion. Gained first hand experience in designing, drafting, preparation of presentation and technical drawings, interacting with client and coordinating for construction. Design Intent A climatically responsive building that brings learning outside the class with passive sustainable techniques. Schematic studies and initial thoughts shows how the philosophy of integrated built form was pursued from the initial stages. In north-west side and north side of the building more openings are given with projecting library and seminar block. South side is receded and shaded using a pergola. This allows cross ventilation and reduces the glare of the sun.

Process and the background

Step 0 - existing profile of site

Step 1 - Road Construction

Kolkata, close to the Gangetic Delta is dotted with water bodies and shallow land. The city is undergoing rapid ubanasiation in the periphery. The site is one such primarily low-lying agricultural land with several water bodies and a canal which acts as the storm water drainage system for the region. The conventional way would be fill up the land with fly ash from thermal power plants for development. However in this master plan an alteranative approach is taken as shown on the left.

Key Words : Architectural Psychology, Forest kindergarten, Nature Deficiet Disorder, Sustainable Architecture Abstract: Forest kindergarten was chosen as the project to explore the possibilities of architectural psychology in grooming the minds of children towards an environmental friendly attitude and to compensate for their Nature Deficiet Disorder as prevalent in urban children. Designed as a kindergarten cum creche it followed the progressive methods of eduction in a forest setting to boost creativity and originality in the children.

Design Directives

Making a Contextual Statement

The Site is a threshold between New Town towers and huts of existing settlement. Profound linearity of it makes it difficult for light and wind.

Central spine emerges naturally due to the linearity and shape. This spine is modified to address either side with contrasting settlements A metaphorical connection is established between both the sides on breaking that spine into multiple units and creating links. Finally the forest passes in between them as continuous trail. Activities gets stretched along the spine

sonia guha | page 64

Site Plan - Recreating an Urban Forest

sonia guha | page65

Selected Units

No defined doors or windows - prevent negative conditioning of mind ; mitigates the difference between inside and outside

There is careful level changes to create a playful feeling simultaneously provide connection and segregation required for progressive method of teaching.

sonia guha | page 66

Design Process

Relationship between soil and Sky

An unconventional approach to design is taken where first sketches were made of functional spaces and demarcated using trees, shrubs and height difference.

Tensile roof respects the child’s angle of view as by semiotics the adult is also directed to look up

child relates to this 2100mm walls at the same time the slope roof ensures a greater air volume suitable to the hot humid climate

sonia guha | page67

Home Room

Where sky is our roof

With sloping floors as a playful innovation to help children master gravity, give them privacy and facilitate adult supervision. Designed for flexibility the walls act as seats to tables to enclosures based ont he age and need of a child. The floor has variation in material, pattern and colour to encourage imaginative play .
