ISIA | progettazione grafica e comunicazione visiva A.A.2013 - 2014

The Olympics are a global event that combines sport, different cultures, young people and older people through emotions. The city that will host the Olympics in 2024 is Rome, a city that can not fail to enthrall you with its magnificence, its historicity and its artistic heritage of those who visit it. But how to combine an event so large and complex as the Olympics with Rome? The Olympics as well as the host city are both ancient and modern, and this must be submitted with harmony; with this in mind the brand fresh, clean and geometric in “Rome word encompasses the people, sports and features of the city using the simple forms juxtaposed to each other. The small shapes that create the logo give

the opportunity not only to see the event in its entirety, but also to recognize the many facets if we focus on the individual elements; so you can see the plan of the Colosseum in the letter O, a typical Roman arch in the letter R, a crowded stadium in the letter A or the circuits drawn on the athletic fields in the letter M. The modern and simple logo encompasses such a large complex so clean and organized. All communication follows this line of thought, from pictographs made with portions of the logo to the photographic images obtained by decomposing the figures into many small and geometric fragments.

Logo

1.2 Concept

My concept is based on a formal research for elements that constitutes the three main areas that need to create the logo: city, people and sport. For each I’ve studied more images and shapes looking for differences and similarities to establish the elements to be used. Elements obtained, only geometric, were then used to form the logo, or the word ROME.

1. city

[arches, squares, plants, roads, monuments and materials]

2. people

[groups, individual and athlete]

3. sport

[lines, sports fields and sports equipment]

1.3 Strategy

My strategy starts from a desire to represent Rome and the Olympics without falling into stereotypes and in the popular imagination you have, especially talking about the city; Rome is obviously a huge source of artistic heritage, but my intent is to exploit (in the good sense of the word) this well with a new and fresh ways.

12

Logo

1.4 Sketches

The initial sketches were based solely on the research of the elements which compose the letters.

13

Logo

1.4 Sketches

After that, the creation of the letters was performed on the basis of an existing font to give the right balance of black and white and harmony to the shapes. The chosen font is the Pump Demi Bold, ideal for its roundness constant in every letter that lends itself to the constituent elements.

14

Logo

1.4 Sketches

Some tests and variations of the elements; the coloured letters in black are the chosen ones.

Raleway Multiple Designers SIL Open Font License, 1.1

Thin ExtraLight

Raleway is an elegant sans-serif typeface family. Initially designed by Matt McInerney as a single thin weight, it was expanded into a 9 weight family by Pablo Impallari and Rodrigo Fuenzalida in 2012 and iKerned by Igino Marini. It is a display face and the download features both old style and lining numerals, standard and discretionary ligatures, a pretty complete set of diacritics, as well as a stylistic alternate inspired by more geometric sansserif typefaces than its neo-grotesque inspired default character set. The font chosen for the logo, or rather the word of the year “2024 is the Raleway. This character was chosen because of its features not too pronounced that interfered with the logo, in itself already rich in detail. This font is used in the logo and in other texts of the communication of the Olympics. For example, the dates in the posters and in some elements in the ticket, but this will be specified in detail in the individual sections.

1.10 Colors 1.10.1 Choices and directions

The colors are all warm tones, in order to express a will of heat and reflect the atmosphere that conveys the city of Rome and the materials that characterize it; brick and marble as the light changes take millions of shades of these tones. Obviously, in line with the intent of the logo, to convey freshness and novelty, the range of colors for the most part very tenuous was emphasized to the maximum, obtaining brilliant colors. The chosen colours chosen are three. There are three other colors that are, in most applications, coupled to the three institutional. Some of the possible combinations are those that follow in the next page, with some exceptions which will be indicated in the specific application.
